NO HIDING PLACE

59-year-old British man has been arrested in Jacarilla on historical child sexual abuse charges dating back to the early seventies. The National Police executed a European Arrest warrant on the man who, at the age of 16, is accused of having raped his two younger stepsisters on up to 18 occasions, as well as making both of them pregnant. The National Police say that the abuse began in 1973 when the man was 16, and he started sexually assualting his 12-year-old youngest step-sister. The rapes continued for three years, and when she became pregnant aged 15,

she had an abortion and ran away to live with her grandmother. The teenage predator then turned to sexually abusing his other step-sister up to three times a week, and she eventually had a son by him when she was aged 18. The accused man’s father covered up his son’s misdeamnors for many years, and advised him to hide in Spain away from the clutches of the British authorities. Once he passed away, the victims reported what happened to them decades ago, and the UK police liased with their counterparts in the National Police in launching a search to find the fugitive,

which they duly did in Jacarilla earlier this month. A spokesman for the National Police said: “National Police officers have arrested a British fugi-

tive in Alicante Province on a European Arrest Warrant for crimes of sexual exploitation and rape. He faces possible life in prison in the UK.”

MAJOR APPRECIATION

ruz Roja (the Spanish equivalent of the Red Cross) got a massive donation of 10 thousand euro this week from HELP Murcia Mar Menor in recognition of their efforts during the flooding that hit the Los Alcázares area during the autumn and winter. The presentation was made on Tuesday at HELP’s monthly meeting at the Las Claras centre in Los Alcázares, with HELP’s vice-president Ann Sheperson handing over the cheque to Jose Cortes Capmona, the Cruz Roja president for the Murcia region. Joining a number of Cruz

Roja representatives for the presentation was Ann Hetherington a long standing member of HELP Murcia Mar Menor, who proposed the Cruz Roja as this year’s recipient of its annual cash donation to a charitable organisation within the Murcia region. Señor Cortes Carmona said that at the moment there was no Cruz Roja in Los Alcázares, the closest one being in San Pedro del Pinatar and that this had caused problems in the past, but they hoped to be opening a local office soon and that HELP´s donation would help fund the project. He also talked about the

important work of the Cruz Roja, which tries to fill the gap between what the national and regional gov-

ernments provide, and what the poor need in the Murcia region at times of difficulty like during last winter.

Torrevieja's new Friday market site by the waterpark off Avenida de Delfina Viudes and Avenida Rosa Mazón went down well with the shoppers, when it opened for business last week (photo from Objectivo Torrevieja). Thousands more shoppers attended than it had been predicted, but that led to the downside of major traffic delays around the

area between 11.00 am and 12.30 pm. Bus services were also hit by the jams, with Torrevieja's markets councillor, Javier Manzanares promising that improvements would be made, including more buses from this week. He conceded that the council had been taken by surprise over the sheer number of people that went to check out the new market site.

Fire Tragedy A wheelchair-bound 70year-old man died in a Torrevieja apartment fire in the early hours of last Friday morning, Several local police and Guardia Civil officers having to be treated for smoke inhalation, as they tried to rescue him. The fire had broken out on the fifth floor of the La Tejera complex on Calle Bazán in the heart of the city at around 2,45 am, with rescue efforts severely hampered by a locked security gate outside the front door of the flat. It was the first such incident in a block with 150 homes, with the 70-year-old Spaniard, originally from Madrid, having lived there for a number of years on his own. He could only move by sitting in his wheelchair due to having had a leg amputated due to diabetes. With the sheer density of the smoke, the victim could not find the keys to open the gate to escape the area, and perished due to the toxic smoke. A fire-lad-

der was used to access the fifth floor, but the security gate delayed the rescue operation, with the man found dead in his bathroom, having also suffered severe burns.

The officers affected by the poisonous fumes were ferried by ambulance to be treated at Torrevieja's Quirón hospital. No reason was given for the cause of the fire.

A road and pavement resurfacing programme has started on the Orihuela Costa this week, with coastal councillor Luisa Boné checking out progress on Calle Salvador Dalí in PAU3 and on the Villamartin road. The 60 thousand euro projecct is scheduled to be finished in a week's time. Boné added that work is already in progress to overhaul the southern entrance

to La Glea beach at a cost of 15 thousand euro, along with pavement widening on Calle Richard Wagner in Villamartin. Meanwhile, the CLARO political party has slammed the Orihuela council for only allocating one point four percent of the authority's one point three million euro 2017 emergency investment budget to projects on the Orihuela Costa.

A 40 year-old Moroccan man was arrested on Wednesday, after a British woman was raped in the early hours of Sunday morning in Los Alcázares. The Guardia Civil said that a young female was assaulted at around 1.30 am, in a field in the Avenidad Libertad area of the municipality, with the assailant escaping on a bicycle. The assaulted woman had apparently had a row with her boyfriend and left the local bars to find a taxi. En route she went into a field, when she was attacked by the man, who had been following her. The man physically attacked her, and after a struggle, he sexually asault-

ed her for around five minutes. After the rape, he escaped on his bluecoloured bike, with the woman managing to make it to a taxi rank, and then subsequently to hospital in Cartagena, where it was confirmed that she had been

sexually assaulted. The Moroccan man has appeared in front of a San Javier judge yesterday, with the investigation ongoing as to whether he may have been involved in other sexual assaults which have been reported in the area.

Getting Busier

Alicante-Elche airport enjoyed a bumper April of record passenger numbers, boosted further by Easter falling later this year. One point three million passengers passed through the terminal according to figures from airport operator AENA, a rise of nearly 21 percent compared to April of last year. British visitors accounted for almost 540

thousand journeys, some 45 percent of the total. The latest figures mean that Alicante-Elche airport has welcomed three and a half million passengers across the first four months of 2017, a rise of 15 percent compared to the same period in 2016, which in itself was a record year. Increased services have led to a rise in numbers at

No Problem Now

Murcia's new president, Fernando López Miras, says that the 19 Mar Menor beaches would have kept their coveted Blue Flag status if surveys had been conducted now. López Miras made his comments on a visit to the area, accompanied by San Pedro del Pinatar mayor, Visitación Martínez, on the back of last week's

news that the Mar Menor had been stripped of all the Blue Flag awards due to pollution coming in from the Campo de Cartagena last year. The President said that the local waters are pollutionfree, backed up by scientific surveys, and he added that it was important to protect a "jewel" in the Murcia region.

Heroic Pet Dies

San Javier airport, but far smaller in terms of percentage compared to AlicanteElche. The April returns showed nearly 120 thousand passengers, an increase of one and a half percent compared to a year earlier. The first four months have seen 249 thousand passengers, which equates to a rise of over six percent compared to 2016.

A dog is always said to be a man’s best friend and in the case of a British resident in the Almoradi area, it certainly proved to be true, as the dog woke his owner up when his home caught fire. The pet lost his life as his master escaped, as the animal died from excess smoke inhalation after los-

Normal Service

Alicante Provincial Council says they stopped 30 thousand cyber attacks on their computer systems last Friday when a major international cyber attack was launched that hit NHS computers in the UK, and Telefonica/Movistar in Spain.

Servers used by the courts in the area were switched off as a precaution with the Orihuela courts suspended on Monday, whilst the computer networks used by the Valencian health service and the Valencian government seemed to be unaffected.

ing consciousness in the property. The blaze, apparently caused by an electrical fault, started in the kitchen of the home on Calle Soria (road pictured) on the El Bañet urbanisation last Friday morning, with the German Shepherd dog barking loudly to raise his owner from his slumbers.

The man got out thanks to the dog, but as flames engulfed the property, the pet died due to the smoke, with firefighters trying without success to revive it. The unnamed British owner was understandably distraught at what happened, with the blaze taking an hour to put out.

Nice And Safe

It’s safe to swim at all of the Mar Menor’s beaches (Los Alcazares pictured), according to the latest water sample checks carried out by the Murcia government’s health department towards the end of last month. Regular surveys are taken, and the news comes a welcome boost after last year’s quality issues saw all of the Mar Menor’s beaches

stripped of their coveted Blue Flag status.

Repeat Robberies

Thieves have again targeted the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue centre, stealing an expensive water pump and tools, many of which were donated by supporters of the charity. Centre co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding first noticed tools disappearing in January, but were shocked

Removing Franco

Any Alicante Province town with a population of less than 20 thousand people, will be able to claim a grant of up to a thousand euro to remove any street signs and plaques to do with the dictator General Franco. Alicante Provincial Council has made available a 50 thousand euro fund that councils will be able to ask for a share of, so long as they make a bid before the end of the month.

when a 700 euro water pump, used to remove water from flooded pastures after the heavy winter rains, was stolen last month. The Weedings, who last year launched a major fundraiser to better secure their boundary after a similar spate of robberies, suspect the thieves were familiar with the rescue centre’s layout

and specifically targeted the expensive pump. Electrical and carpentry tools, including an angle grinder and circular saw, have also gone missing, hampering efforts to perform critical ongoing maintenance work at the sanctuary, including building a new boundary wall which would add extra security.

A lorry stashed with 650 kilos of hashish hidden within boxes of toilet rolls was pulled over by the National Police on the A-7 motorway in the Murcia region, after National Police officers saw the large vehicle being driven somewhat erratically. The officers followed the vehicle for a few kilometres, and then intercepted it at exit from the motorway. The 57-year-old Spanish driver appeared nervous when he was pulled over, arousing suspicions that he was carrying more than just toilet rolls in his large cargo. The lorry was taken to Lorca, where the drugs were discovered, and the man was arrested, with the illegal cargo apparently destined for central Europe.

Wall Of Confusion

Speedy Hits

Two of the most profitable speed traps in Spain are in the Murcia region, according to the answer to a questionsupplied to an MP in the Madrid parliament. Information supplied by the DGT traffic authority says that one point three

million euro was raised by the radar cameras on the RM-19 between San Javier and Murcia City at kilometre 17.7, which was trumped by the two million plus euro accumulated by the traps on the A-7 in the Lorca area at kilometre 634.5.

Bullfight Demo Thousands of animal rights activists staged a protest in Madrid on Saturday calling for an end to Spain’s long tradition of bullfighting. The march went through the city centre with several groups united under one message: “Bullfighting is violence and you can stop it.” Animal rights activists say the gory fights are among the world’s most blatant forms of animal cruelty, with bulls taunted, lanced and finally stabbed through the heart. Matadors on the other hand are praised by their supporters for killing a bull with a single stab,

Bog Standard

though some do not succeed in finishing off the animal with repeated thrusts. Protesters also demanded

a change in the law under which animal cruelty would be subject to Spain’s criminal code.

Alicante Province's coastal service has backed Orihuela council's decision in 2015 to take down a controversial wall which blocked pedestrian access from Cabo Roig to Aquamarina beach, which had been erected by residents, without planning permission,

at the Bellavista urbanisation back in the mid-nineties. This goes against an Elche court decision back in the autumn that residents were entitled to have a wall, with Orihuela council failing to lodge documents in time with the court to launch an appeal.

Socialist opposition councillor María García has again attacked the Orihuela Partido Popular-led administration for failing to launch an appeal in time, adding that the relationship between the local residents and the council is being soured still further.

Hits Aplenty

Buckinghamshire-based choral group, Pop Goes The Choir, popped over to Torrevieja last weekend (photo from Objectivo Torrevieja), for a trio of open air concerts including one on

Saturday at the Paseo Vista Alegre. The choir performed a selection of popular hits over the last century in a couple of concerts in Torrevieja, before going to the main square for their

final gig in La Mata on Sunday lunchtime. One of the choir members is a regular visitor to the Torrevieja area, so she persuaded her colleagues to make the journey with her!

Toll Rises

The death toll following a drunk-driver hitting a group of triathlon cyclist on the Northern Costa Blanca, has risen to three, after the death of 23-yearold Jose Antonio Albi at Valencia’s La Fe Hospital. A group of triathlon cyclists from the Club Atlètic Llebeig de Xàbia were mowed down by a car on the N-332 near Oliva on Sunday May 7th. The vehicle was driven by a 28-year-old woman, who was four times over the drink-drive limit, as well as with cocaine detected in her blood stream. She was remanded to jail by a judge at a court appearance last week. Jose Antonio Albi underwent surgery to remove pressure caused by excess fluid on his brain, and was placed in deep sedation and on life support. But the damage to his brain was too great to allow him to recover, and when doctors began to

withdraw sedation, he passed away. One of those injured was Scott Gordon, a British ex-pat from NorthEast Scotland who moved to Javea with his family and two daughters four

years ago. He is intensive care in hospital in Denia, having had 23 litres of blood transfusions, as well as seven hours of surgery to multiple fractures in both arms and legs.

Dead Crook

An infamous serial burglar, who previously operated in the Murcia region amongst other parts of the country, was found shot dead on a Madrid street in mysterious circumstances at the weekend. Francisco Javier Martín Sáez, 36 – better known as 'Niño Sáez' – has commit-

ted over 22 offences and is famous for 'dropping in' through windows and skylights. He crawled around several streets after being shot before collapsing in a cardiac arrest. Police and paramedics attempted to revive him at around 11.30 am on Sunday, but he passed

away. He had sustained three bullet wounds, one in the neck and two in the left side of his chest. The burglar had a long history of breaking into safe deposit boxes in homes and business premises, and stealing luxury cars, but he was normally released on bail after being arrested.

The move to the building from temporary premises in La Siesta was being held up due to an outstanding tax debt of nearly 700 euro, which the mayor has now paid. “Summer is here and we need the building to be

Rajoy And The "Hitman" A long-standing controversial case known as the Bárcenas affair, named after the ex-treasurer of the ruling Partido Popular, Luis Bárcenas, has thrown up an intriguing accusation that has been published on the El Espanol news website. The media site alleges that the PP Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, asked Bárcenas to stop him being blackmailed, and that allegedly Bárcenas was asked to stop a "damaging" audio tape from being released. The story went as far to say that the recentlyarrested ex-Madrid regional president Ignacio González claimed that Rajoy had been behind a plot to kill him, and that a damaging tape exists. While it is not clear what the allegations within the tape are, it has been alleged that businessman Julio Ariza, the head of Intereconomics Group, was trying to sell the tape before Rajoy's then friend and advisor, Bárcenas stepped in. Mr González is reported to have said: "They gave him money for the f****** tape. To cover it. They offered it to the Venezuelan government for ten million euros." Bárcenas, 59, is facing a range of charges including

tax fraud and moneylaundering, with Rajoy ordered by a judge to give evidence in the case, though the National Court has made it clear that there are no suspicions that the Prime Minister is implicated in anything. PP spokesman Íñigo Méndez de Vigo said after last Friday's meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Rajoy:‘What I can tell you about this allegation is that Mariano Rajoy rejects at any time he has been subjected to blackmail. Anyone who knows the prime minister knows he is incapable of blackmailing anyone or being a victim of blackmail’. In 2013 Luis Bárcenas was sent to prison pending trial and was not

bailed to "avoid the risk of flight and ensure the preservation of sources of evidence". He was released on bail in January 2015 amid the prosecution of proceed against 45 suspects in the case. The trial began in October 2016 but has been divided into different sections. Authorities began to investigate the activities of Bárcenas in 2007 after information was obtained from a whistle-blower, Ana Garrido Ramos, regarding alleged corruption in the Madrid area. A police interview with Ignacio González was recorded on February 19th in which he claimed Rajoy sent spies to follow him to Colombia.

Move Him Out Spain’s opposition parties have voted to move the remains of fascist dictator Francisco Franco out of a state-funded mausoleum, in a non-binding parliamentary motion that is likely to be resisted by the minority Partido Popular government. The motion, backed by parties on the left and centre, reflected growing pressure from campaign groups and politicians to turn the site into a broader memorial honouring those who died on both sides of the Spanish Civil war between 1936 and 1939. It was passed by 198 votes to one, with 140 members of Congress abstaining, including those from the right-wing Partido Popular (PP). The PP has long opposed attempts to exhume Franco’s body, saying this would only stir up painful memories more than four decades after his death and nearly 80 years after the end of the war. The motion also called for tens of thousands of other bodies buried at the mausoleum just outside Madrid, known as the Valley of the Fallen, to be exhumed too. Many of those interred there fought for the losing Republican side and were moved to the monument

under Franco’s dictatorship without their families’ permission. The 150-metre cross of the Valley of the Fallen monument, built by prisoners of war, towers over the Guadarrama Sierra, a mountain range west of Madrid. Opened by Franco himself in 1959, the Valley houses a Catholic basilica set into a hillside, where the founder of Spain’s fascist Falange party, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, is also interred. It has long been a site of pilgrimage for far-right groups in Spain. The then- Socialist PSOE

government approved a socalled ‘Law of Historical Memory’ in 2007, aimed at giving greater recognition to victims on both sides of the war. It has not always been easy to implement, however, in a country where many streets and squares still bear Franco’s name, and the PP cut state funding for this initiative after it came to power in 2011. The motion was spearheaded by the PSOE, which called for Franco to be moved to a private burial site and for the Valley to be converted into an information centre.

Gold Plated Pensions – Why now is a Good Time to Cash In Did you know that due to "low interest rates" at the moment, your Final Salary Pension transfer value could now be a small fortune!! STOP - before you start taking your pension speak to Blacktower. Opportunities like this don't come along more than once in a lifetime! Here is a typical case recently completed by myself:

to secure their pension pots. As schemes look to reduce their liabilities, sometimes offering these enhanced rates to get members off their books, expats are taking advantage. In some cases, they could be offered more than 20 times the value of the annual pension available normally on retirement. Transferring the Cash Value to a Recognised Overseas Pension or UK SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension) allows you to protect your pension funds in a new scheme. These schemes allow for flexible drawdown, and you can take a lump sum from the age of 55. Unlike “Final Salary” (DB) schemes, unused funds are also available to beneficiaries.

Peter and Anne S from Bradford were able to retire early to Spain by transferring their UK Final Salary Pensions. (Also known as (DB) or Defined Benefit schemes). Peter (age 58) had worked for a large UK Bank for over 20 years whilst Anne (age 56) had worked for a Financial Services company for over 30 years. Both were members of their companies' Final Salary pension schemes, although these had both been closed to future members with new contributory schemes replacing them. Louise, their only daughter, had recently relocated to Spain due to work commitments, and they were keen to join her by retiring early and moving to Spain themselves. However, the Normal Retirement date for them both was 60 years of age with their current work pensions. This meant they would have had to pay exit penalties if they wanted to retire early and draw their pensions. Having been referred to us we were able to look at some alternative options for them. We issued each of the pension schemes with a Letter of Authority which enabled us to liaise with the pension schemes on their behalf. The current schemes were offering annual pensions of £9,800 and £12,500 respectively, were they to retire at 60. Our reports showed that both pension schemes were in deficit meaning that they could be at risk of defaulting in the future. (As happened with BHS last year.) Cash equivalent transfer values were requested and Peter was offered £289,870 whilst Anne was offered a staggering £474,843 to exit her scheme! These high valuations are typical of the transfer values being obtained now. They

are at record highs because pension schemes are keen to reduce their balance sheets. Also, the current low interest rates (which affect the calculations) ensure that the transfer values being obtained now are exceptionally high. With our help, Peter and Anne were able to transfer these amounts to new overseas pension schemes backed by one of the largest insurance companies in the world. They were both able to take 25% tax free lumps sums which amounted to in £335,685 total. These funds have been used to buy their dream property in Spain and unsurprisingly they have both been able to retire years earlier than they anticipated. Along with the proceeds from the sale of their property in the UK, they still have total funds of over half a million pounds in their new pension schemes. Why Dogs Chew Before looking at how to stop dog chewing, it helps to know why dogs chew. There are several reasons dogs might chew: • Puppies, much like human babies, explore the world with their mouths. They pick up and chew anything and everything. • Puppies also chew to relieve teething pain. • Some dogs find chewing soothing. It helps them calm themselves down. • Chewing relieves boredom in dogs. • Dogs engage in destructive chewing when they're anxious, as we see with dogs with separation anxiety. • Lack of training is another reason dogs chew on inappropriate objects. It's important to know that dogs don't chew out of spite. Though it can be frustrating for dog owners, dogs chew on inappropriate things because they don't know any better. They don't understand that your favourite shoe is any different than their favourite chew toy until you teach them otherwise. Toys The most important thing you can do to prevent dogs from destructive chewing is to have plenty of dog toys on hand that your dog can chew. Dogs like to chew. It's easier to train them to chew their toys instead of a table leg than it is to train them not to chew at all. By having lots of interesting and appropriate chew toys on hand, it'll be a lot easier to end destructive chewing.

POPPY Poppy is a lovely, friendly cat, that is very affectionate towards people, but she is quite bossy when it comes to other cats! She would make a wonderful cat for someone who wants company, but would be better as an only cat in the home. To arrange to meet Poppy and the other APAH cats, then please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

Don't Punish No matter how angry you get when you find your dog has just chewed your favourite possession, it's important that you don't punish. Punishing your dog will only increase his stress levels and anxiety which in turn increase his need to chew. Punishing your dog may only serve to increase the problem. Supervision and Confinement Until a dog is completely chew trained, he should not be allowed to roam freely around your home. This just sets him up for failure because there are too many interesting objects to explore and chew around your home. Supervise him around the house, and when that's not possible, the dog should be confined to a crate or in a room where there's nothing inappropriate for him to chew. Redirect and Praise Now that your dog is always either supervised or confined, you will be on hand any time he chews something. If he begins to chew something inappropriate, tell him "no" or "wrong" and redirect him to an appropriate chew toy. You may need to engage him a little by shaking the toy or turning it into a game. As soon as the dog is chewing on the toy, give him lots of praise. Praise should also be used any time you notice your puppy or dog choose an appropriate chew toy. This will encourage him to go for his own toys rather than furniture, shoes, and other objects around your home. Be Patient and Realistic Even the best trained dogs have bad moments now and then. In your dog's lifetime, chances are he's going to chew something you would rather he didn't. If this happens, just go back to the beginning, and reinforce your dog's good chewing habits. Your patience will pay off.

SIENA Siena is a four-year- old Yorkshire Terrier, who has been vaccinated, chipped and sterilized. Clamping Down

Clever Berta A Spanish woman has broken the European record for completing a Rubik cube in the fastest time with her eyes closed, as she logged the third-faster time ever seen in the world. Berta GarcĂa Parra solved the puzzle in just 20.38 seconds during the Rubik Cube Open Championships this week in El Escorial, near Madrid, beating over 90 other competitors, who came from around the world. Berta's achievement was even more spectacular, as she finished the Rubik puzzle without looking at it. She already held the national record of completing a Rubik cube in 21.44 seconds with her eyes shut.

Motorists who caught drink-driving or using drugs, on more than one occasion in two years will now face an automatic ban and mandatory health check to see if they are addicted to booze or drugs. Interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said that though the measure already exists in law, it is rarely applied at the moment. In the light of the recent tragedy on the northern Costa Blanca where a driver mowed down a group of cyclist after a night of drinking and drug-taking, the minister said that something needed to be done after a

series of high-profile accidents. Zoido added that changes need to be made before more lives are lost, and said that repeat offenders found to have diagnosable drug or alcohol issues may be obliged to undergo medical treatment and be stopped from driving until they are 'clean'. And if criminal proceedings against them after they cause accidents are dropped, civil proceedings will be conducted instead, to ensure they never get away scot-free. The minister intends to increase police presence on secondary roads on Saturday and Sunday morn-

ings, when the majority of cycling and pedestrian accidents happen due to partygoers returning home, and wants to set up more checkpoints in these areas at those times. He plans to increase the number of checkpoints substantially, as well as sending out helicopters to work out which roads are the most heavily-frequented by cyclists, and when. An awareness campaign will include adverts featuring real-life testimonials by accident victims or their friends and family members and be broadcast on TV and radio before summer.

Pool Drama A three-year-old British boy is in intensive care after an accident on Wednesday in a swimming pool on the Northern Costa Blanca. The unnamed boy's parents raised the alarm after discovering him in the pool of their villa. Police managed to revive him using a defibrillator after reaching the scene and discovering he was unconscious and had no pulse. The youngster was taken to Denia’s Marina Salud hospital, before he was

transferred to hospital in Valencia, where he has con-

dition has described yesterday as serious but stable.

Uncle Sam’s Bang A low flying US military plane travelling over the Vega Baja region in a training exercise caused a commotion for residents who on hearing a loud noise, thought that an earthquake had struck. A Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker plane (pictrued) was amongst a variety of military aircraft in the area, including Eurofighter Typhoons and aircraft from other NATO countries taking to the high skies above the area. The sound, which was described as being "like a loud explosion", was heard at around 4.40 pm on Wednesday afternoon,

heard across Los Montesinos, Orihuela,

Callosa de Segura, Almoradí and Rojales.

Nailed It An 82-year-old ex-carpenter has landed himself in hot water after he went round the Murcia City area, and scratched at least 19 cars with a six centimetre nail. The National Police arrested the man who is also accused of damaging bodywork on a number of vehicles last monthin the Barrio del Carmen area of the city, with more acts of vandalism not ruled out. Authorities have not said what motivated the man to go on his sprees of violence.

All For Nothing The Valencian regional government has been ordered to cough up over nine milion euro for a road expansion that never happened. The ruling has come from the Valencia High Court over a proposed 400 million euro upgrade of the CV-95 between Orihuela City and the Los Balcones area of Torrevieja that was scrapped in 2012. Contractors won a tender to convert the CV-95 into a dual-carriageway, and having lost money on the project, took the Valencian government to court in a longrunning legal battle which they hope is now concluded.

Food & Drink

Rustic loaf

Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6 and lightly grease a baking sheet. Pour a little vegetable oil into a frying pan and fry the onions until soft. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool a little. Next using a large mixing bowl mix the salt, flour, chives, chilli powder and green olives. Mix well until combined. Then add the onions and mix again. In a separate jug, beat the eggs and add the milk. Pour the egg/milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix to form a soft dough. Empty the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently to bring it together. Shape the dough into an oval and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Score several slashes to the top of the dough using a sharp knife. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 - 40 minutes, or until a little risen and golden brown. The bread should sound hollow when tapped underneath. (If you wish to bake the loaf in a loaf tin then you will need to bake for an extra half hour and turn down the heat to 180°C/360°F/Gas Mark 5) Transfer to a wire rack to cool fully.

Ingredients:

Method:

for the sweet corn fritters: 250 g flour 1 tbsp sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1 / 2 tsp smoked paprika (optional) 1 / 4 tsp salt 2 eggs, beaten 125 ml milk 1 x 320 g tin sweet corn, drained 1 bunch spring onions, chopped small bunch coriander, roughly chopped sunflower oil, for pan frying for the tomato salsa: 4 tomatoes, finely diced 1 small red onion, very finely diced 1 / 2 small red chilli, deseeded and chopped 1 tsp sweet chilli sauce 1 / 2 tsp caster sugar juice of 2 limes small bunch coriander, finely chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper

To make the fritters, dump everything into a bowl except for the sunflower oil and mix well. It should be the consistency of thick, gooey porridge. Heat the sunflower oil in a frying pan. Plop spoonfuls of the corn mixture into the hot oil. Fry the fritters for 1 or 2 minutes on each side. Pat them down slightly while they’re cooking in the pan, as they will cook better if a bit thinner. To make the salsa, mix all the ingredients together and leave to marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature before serving. Serve the fritters with the tomato salsa.

Jambalaya If you love chicken, seafood and sausage then this dish has everything you need. You can leave out one or even two of the meats if you have a preference. INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 2 ribs celery, chopped 1 white onion, diced 1 small red bell pepper, cored and diced 1 small yellow bell pepper, cored and diced 1 small green bell pepper, cored and diced 1-2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped (*more/less to taste, see note below) 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bitesized pieces 1 pound andouille sausage, thinly sliced into rounds 3 cups chicken stock 1 (14 ounces) can crushed tomatoes 1 1/2 cups uncooked short grain white rice (you can use brown if you prefer, but you’ll need to cook it separately if you do, otherwise it takes significantly longer to cook than white rice)! 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning (**more/less to taste, see note below) 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoons thyme, crushed 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined (optional) 1 cup thinly-sliced okra salt and pepper (optional garnishes: chopped fresh parsley, thinlysliced green onions, hot sauce)

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a stock pot (or a very large/deep saute pan) over medium-high heat. Add celery, onion, bell peppers, jalapeno and garlic. Saute for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft and mostly cooked. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, chicken and sausage, and stir to combine. Continue sauteing for an additional 5 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink and mostly cooked. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes, rice, Cajun seasoning, bay leaf, thyme, and cayenne, and stir to combine. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for about 25-30 minutes, or until the rice is cooked, stirring occasionally. (Don’t forget to stir, or the rice may burn on the bottom of the pan.) Once the rice is tender, add in the shrimp and okra and stir to combine. Let the mixture continue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until the shrimp are cooked and pink. Remove bay leaf and season the jambalaya with salt and pepper and hot sauce and additional Cajun seasoning if needed. Remove from heat. Serve warm with optional garnishes if desired. Or refrigerate and store in a sealed container for up to 3 days.

Mini chestnut cheesecake sundaes

Ingredients: 25g whole blanched hazelnuts, finely chopped 100g double chocolate chip cookies 175g unsweetened chestnut pureÌe (or sweetened if it's all you can find) 250g mascarpone 25g caster sugar To decorate: 2 tbsp edible sprinkles of your choice 50g milk, dark or white chocolate 75ml double cream 1 tbsp edible pearls 6 maraschino cherries with stems 6 homemade flags Method: First, decorate the glasses. Pour the sprinkles into a small bowl. Snap the chocolate into a small heatproof bowl and either melt in the microwave in 30second blasts, stirring between each go, or over a pan of simmering water, shallow enough that the water doesn’t touch the bowl. When melted, brush chocolate around the top of each glass in a 1/2 cm-thick band on the inside and outside (or you can did the rim of the glass in but make sure to let excess

chocolate drip off). Dip each glass into the sprinkles and leave to set. Toast the hazelnuts in a dry frying pan over a medium heat, tossing regularly, until golden. Blitz the cookies in a food processor, or seal in a food bag and bash with a rolling pin, until you have rough crumbs. Stir the hazelnuts into the cookie crumbs and set aside. If using unsweetened chestnut purée, blend in a food processor to get rid of any graininess. Beat the mascarpone and sugar in a medium bowl until smooth. Fold the chestnut purée into the mascarpone until well mixed. (If using sweetened chestnut purée simply beat with the mascarpone and omit the sugar.) To assemble, spoon a tablespoon of crumb mixture into each glass. Top with 2 tablespoons of the creamy mixture, being careful not to mess up the sides or top. Add second layers of biscuit and creamy filling and finish with biscuit. You can serve straight away, or for a firmer finish, cover with cling film and chill for 1 hour. When ready to serve, softly whip the cream in a medium bowl. Dollop a spoonful onto each sundae, sprinkle with edible pearls and sit a cherry proudly on top, stalk upright. For ultimate cute factor, decorate with homemade flags. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Pimm's ingredients: 1 handful of fresh mint 4 cucumber slices 4 strawberries, sliced 2 lemon slices 2 lime slices 4 ounces Pimm's No. 1 1 lemon wedge 1 lime wedge 4 ounces ginger beer 1 to 2 ounces club soda (you can totally leave this

out if you want, I like the extra fizz minus flavor) Method: Note: to make the pitcher, I used this recipe x 4. Note 2: like any drink, you might want to taste the Pimm's or start with an ounce less the first time making this. You can always add more!

Before: in order to make these more "strawberry-y," I soaked a pint of strawberries in Pimm's overnight in the fridge in a mason jar. I used the Pimm's for the drinks and also put the strawberries in the drink too! You don't HAVE to do this. Fill your glass with a mixture of ice, strawberries, cucumber slices, fresh mint, lemon slices and lime slices. Remember to save a strawberry or some mint for garnish on top if you care. I like to to layer this: add some veg on the bottom, then some ice, add some strawberries and lemon, add more ice, etc. Once your cup is full of ice and produce (ha), pour in the Pimm's and squeeze in the lemon juice and lime juice from each wedge. Use a knife or cocktail stirrer to stir the mixture up and at this time, I sort of faux "muddle" the mint too. Pour the ginger beer over top and finish with the club soda. give it a gentle stir. Garnish with the leftover mint or strawberry or lemon wedge. Drink up!

Taking ibuprofen regularly for one week 'increases heart attack risk' Taking ibuprofen could quickly increase the risk of heart attack – a “worrying” potential side-effect that appears to occur from the first week of regular use, according to a new study. While the overall risk of heart attack remains low, they are most likely to occur within the first month of taking a high dose of ibuprofen or other common painkillers, an international team of researchers has claimed. Ibuprofen, available in supermarkets and corner shops, is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). “Taking any dose of NSAIDs for one week, one month, or more than a month was associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction [heart attack],” wrote the researchers, led by Michèle Bally of the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre in Canada. “Prescribers should consider weighing the risks and benefits of NSAIDs before instituting treatment, particularly for higher doses.” The study, published in the British Medical Journal, analysed data from almost 450,000 people, 61,460 of whom had suffered a heart attack.

Researchers examined the effect over time of taking three common anti-inflammatory painkillers – ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen – and two others, called celecoxib and rofecoxib. The increased risk of suffering a heart attack was between 24 per cent and 58 per cent overall when taking the drugs, compared with not using them. In context, these jumps are small, as the average likelihood of heart attack among those taking NSAIDs is around one per cent a year, with patients who already have heart disease or related conditions such as diabetes at greater risk. But Dr Bally told The Independent even small increases in heart attack risk are important from a public health viewpoint because the use of these medicines is so widespread. “If an individual’s risk of heart attack is one per cent and it increases to 1.25 per cent, they don’t care,” she said. “But at a population level, it’s important, and if people want to contribute to public health, they might wish to make more informed choices.” Using the drugs for longer than one month did not increase risk more than with

shorter use, found the researchers, from Canada, Germany and Finland. They studied people who took both a low dose of the drugs or a high dose, defined by the researchers as over 1200mg, or three maximum-strength tablets, of ibuprofen each day. For diclofenac, this was over 100mg and for naproxen, over 750g. “This large-scale study worryingly highlights just how quickly you become at risk of having a heart attack after starting NSAIDs,” said Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director of the British Heart Foundation. Dr Knapton said it was already known that these drugs increase the risk of having a heart attack, adding: “Whether you are being prescribed painkillers like ibuprofen, or buying them over the counter, people must be made aware of the risk and alternative medication should be considered where appropriate.” Naproxen is available over the counter for period pain and on prescription for conditions such as arthritis and back pain. Diclofenac was available over the counter in the UK until 2015, but is now only available on prescription.

In 2013, researchers said one year's high-dose treatment with ibuprofen and diclofenac, used by hundreds of thousands of arthritis sufferers in the UK, leads to three avoidable heart attacks and one fatal heart attack for every 1,000 users. A spokesperson for the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence said all prescribing guidance was regularly reviewed and would take into consideration all evidence that comes to light between reviews.

Sales of over-the-counter painkillers amounted to almost £600 million in the UK in 2015. “This study builds on research highlighting the risks involved in using NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, to treat pain – and it’s important that as new research is published, it is taken on board to inform the clinical guidelines that support our work,” said Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs. “This study should also raise

awareness amongst patients who self-medicate with NSAIDs that are available over the counter, to treat their pain. “Actually, the use of NSAIDs in general practice to treat patients with chronic pain is reducing and some of the drugs in this study are no longer routinely prescribed in the UK, such as coxibs, as we know that long term use can lead to serious side effects for some patients.”

How Blood Pressure Medications Work Blood pressure medications go by many different brand names; nevertheless, nearly all blood pressure medications belong to about six distinct groups describing how the drug interferes with the body to reduce blood pressure. Prescription drugs usually have two different names written on their packet. The brand name which usually stands out on the packet is the manufacturer's name for the drug, while the generic name typically in smaller letters, refers to the chemical name of the drug. Ibuprofen (generic name) goes by many different brands such as Nurofen and Hedex. Classes of High blood pressure medications: ACE (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme) inhibitors: These drugs

reduce blood pressure by blocking the production of a substance in the kidney called angiotensin. Low levels of Angiotensin results in the widening of arteries which in turn cause a reduction in blood pressure. Typically examples of ACE are ramipril and enalapril.

Vasodilators: Common examples include valsartan, losartan and perindopril. Vasodilators widen arteries, a process that helps reduce blood pressure. Alpha blockers such as Doxazosin lower blood pressure by relaxing the muscles of small arteries.

Beta Blockers prevent the manufacture of adrenaline whose function is to increase heart rate. Without adrenaline, heart rate slows down causing a reduction in blood pressure. Commonly prescribed beta blockers include propranolol, bisoprolol and atenolol. Calcium Channel Blockers: The most commonly prescribed are Nifedipine and Diltiazem. These medications lower blood pressure by reducing

Diuretics include the generic brands Furosemide and Hydrochlorothiazide. Diuretics promote the loss of water and minerals from the body with the aim of reducing the volume of blood in the body and in turn blood pressure.

the absorption of calcium into the muscles of the

heart, which decreases the force of contraction of the

heart and in turn blood pressure.

Cheese does not increase risk of heart attack or strokes, find researchers The belief that cheese is bad for you is wrong, researchers have said, after finding no link between eating dairy products and a heightened risk of heart attack and strokes. Even full-fat cheese, milk

and yoghurt, often avoided by the health-conscious due to their high saturated fat content, does not increase the risk of death or conditions such as coronary heart disease, according to a review of 29 different stud-

ies involving nearly a million participants. “There’s quite a widespread but mistaken belief among the public that dairy products in general can be bad for you, but that’s a misconception,” said

researcher Ian Givens, a nutrition professor at Reading University. “While it is a widely held belief, our research shows that that’s wrong," he said. “There’s been a lot of publicity over the last five to 10 years about how saturated fats increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and a belief has grown up that they must increase the risk, but they don’t.” NHS guidelines suggest people cut the amount of saturated fat they eat, because a diet high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol in the blood, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Men are recommend to eat no more than 30g of saturated fat a day, and women no more than 20g. This sounds like bad news for cheese lovers – if two people share a whole baked 250g camembert, for instance, they will both consume around 19g of saturated fat. But overall levels of dairy consumption did not appear to be associated with an increased risk of circulatory conditions such as stroke and heart attacks, according to the study, published in the European Journal of Epidemiology. The research analysed results from previous studies carried out over the last 35 years, using information on the health and diet of 938,465 participants. Scientists are divided on whether limiting saturated fats can improve overall health and lower the risk of heart disease. A study published earlier this year in the British

Medical Journal (BMJ) swapping even one per cent of your daily calorie intake from saturated fats like butter and meat to vegetables, wholegrain carbohydrates or polyunsaturated fats found in olive oil and fish can improve heart health. However, previous research from the University of Bergen in Norway found fatty foods such as cheese, butter and cream could in fact help protect people from heart disease when eaten as part of a diet where overall calorie intake is restricted. Simon Dankel, who led the study, told The Independent in December the research showed the human body “can do perfectly well with fats as its main energy source.” “People will say: ‘you can’t lose weight, you can’t go on any diets with saturated fats, no matter what’,” said Dr Dankel. “But in this context, we

see a very positive metabolic response. You can base your energy in your diet on either on carbohydrates or fat. It doesn’t make a big difference.” According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF)’s website, eating too much cheese “could lead to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease”, and the organisation recommends people “enjoy it sensibly”. "Saturated fat can increase the ‘bad’ (LDL) cholesterol in your blood which can cause fatty material to build up in your artery walls. The risk is particularly high if you have a high level of bad cholesterol and a low level of good cholesterol," says the organisation. The new research was part-funded by three prodairy groups, but they had no influence over the contents of the paper.

On Yer’ Hike!

By Julie Day OK, summer is almost upon us, or it should be looking at today’s date, but it hasn’t really been a mild and pleasant winter, and even now, there’s the minute possibility that the weather could still take a turn for the worse. In any case, we’ve got a little while longer before it gets too hot and, therefore, now could just be the perfect time for spending plenty of time in nature, especially if you’re into walking, hiking and other similar activities.

El Picacho Lagoon, which is full of birdlife. And, to the left there’s a bread oven that you can go in and examine. A bit further on, you will come to the foot of the El Picacho mountain, which is a good 6 km climb for the more experienced hikers. Even though it’s quite a drive away, there will be plenty to do and see while you’re there. Why not make a weekend of it! Ruta de la Fortaleza

And Spain is a fantastic country to be out in the fresh air, too, with its huge expanses of forest land, mountains and natural parks. If you’re a seasoned hiker, or even just fancy a change of scenery and want to see more of what Spain has to offer other than its beautiful sandy beaches and cosmopolitan cities, why not try one of the four best destinations for hiking and walking that we’ve chosen?

If you’re on holiday in Tenerife, you can’t not visit the National Teide Park. Here you’ll be met with a unique setting, not dissimilar to what it must be like on the moon. This is a fairly gentle walk, even though it is 13km long and takes three hours to cover. There’s so much to see in terms of flora and fauna, not forgetting the silhouette of the majestic Mount Teide always in the distance.

Ruta de la Garganta de Puerto Oscuro (pictured above)

Ruta de losCahorros, Monachil (pictured below)

This is the perfect walk for beginners of all ages. The Garganta de Puerto Oscuro route is located within the Natural Park of Alcornocales in Alcalá de losGazules, Andalucía. It takes less than an hour to cover the distance of 0.9km, but it is still worthwhile as the scenery is fantastic. The first part will take you through shaded woodland, until you arrive at the tranquil

The flow of the River Monachil has moulded the landscape of this area for hundreds of years, marking an excellent path for walkers and hikers. Care must be taken in some parts where the path really narrows, but that just makes it even that bit more exciting. Great for thrill seekers! Nevertheless, there are two possible routes; one for beginners (Los Cachorros), and the other for the more experienced hiker( Los Cachorros Altos), where stunning views of the riverbed can be seen from up high. The best part of this route is when you get to thehanging bridges, which you’ll come across along the way. The longest one is 63m, so anyone who’s afraid of heights, unstable paths or who suffers from vertigo needs to take care. Ruta del Río Borosa, Sierra de Cazorla This is actually one of the most well-known walking routes throughout the whole of southern Spain. It is best avoided during the hot summer months and enjoyed in the spring and cooler months. Along the trek, you’ll follow the River Borosa, see the waterfalls, pass through tunnels and walk approximately 12km through a beautiful natural environment. Of course, you don’t have to travel so far to take pleasure in Spain’s natural surroundings, as we have plenty of great scenic locations right on our doorstep here on the Costa Blanca. Nevertheless, they do say that a change of scenery never does anyone any harm!

Eat My Soul presents itself as a festival with two fun-filled facets: a family-friendly one and a decidedly roguish one. It features a jam session, a black rice meal for the whole family, a concert and swing dance session, a film series, a flea market, DJs, a Caribbean food market... all of which are family-friendly, followed by activities for night owls after the sun sets.

TRELI ON THE TELLY Tough To Watch

WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

There seems to be a spurt of “real-life” dramas on UK TV at the moment telling recent crime stories, and so long as they are well done, I have no problem with the current spate at the moment. Little Blue Boy ended on ITV on Monday night, with scenes of the young morons in the court dock laughing over the killing of Rhys Jones like the mindless idiots they were. It rightly made me angry, but hats-off to the all of the cast, led by the peerless Stephen Graham as the lead copper Dave Kelly, who was treated badly by his superiors. It was good to see at the end that Rhys’s mum and dad pulled things together, and have remained big friends with Dave Kelly every since. Now we have the disturbing Three Girls that ran over three nights this week on BBC 1. This is the story of the Rochdale child sex abuse scandal and it has made for an extremely uncomfortable watch, but so it should be. The abuse scenes were powerful and made me want to crawl under my skin, but it

is good that it was done as sensitively as possible to show the full horror of what went on. Television has to be brave like this, and those who took to social media to brand Three Girls as “disgusting” totally missed the point. The young actresses were superb, and Maxine Peake as the NHS sexual health officer was…well… just top notch Maxine Peake as always, as she forced the lax authorities to get off their backsides to do something about the vile exploitation and grooming. You grieved for dad Paul Kaye as he realised what had happened to his daughter. The unsympathetic attitudes of some of the police and social workers had to be seen to be believed, and one of the messages of Three Girls is that this must never be allowed to happen again. Unfortunately, it will. In lighter vein, I couldn’t help laughing at the slogan for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev, which was promoting diversity. Step forward three male presenters (in pseudo American accents) of the

evening’s proceedings, as if to not prove the point! Though they couldn’t beat the Swedes for the way they did it last year, it wasn’t a bad watch, and of course BBC 1 viewers had the bonus of Graham Norton’s witty commentary that, as always, did the great Terry Wogan proud. I loved Portugal’s winner (having not initially liked the song when I first heard it a fortnight ago), as well as second-placed Bulgaria. Lucie Jones did well for the UK especially from the juries, whilst Spain’s awful entry (and out-of-tune singer) got exactly what it deserved by coming bottom…Franco would have had him shot. Much as it was wrong that the Ukranian hosts barred Russia from taking part, not having Russia removed a lot of block voting, and most of the decent songs finished high up the table, with only the UK being unlucky. There’s certainly part of me that wants to save up some euros to go to Lisbon next May! I won’t bore you again with my regular attack on

the unrepresentative BAFTA Awards aired on BBC 1 last Sunday, which were deservedly thrashed in the ratings by The Durrells and Grantchester over on ITV. At least Happy Valley got the best drama award and best actress gong for Sarah Lancashire, and Tom Hollander the best supporting actress acolade for The Night Manager. Also two awards for the fantastic Planet Earth II. But nothing for The Crown, and a stream of top shows that

were not even nominated in the first place…tut, tut! No wonder nobody watches the BAFTAs. Breathe nice and easy if you get worried about the US networks not renewing your favourite transatlantic shows, because in this week’s announcements, nothing of merit has been cancelled. If anything there have been some generous renewals, like Fox ordering a second series of The Exorcist…really? As predicted, we have The X Files

back on Fox, whilst ABC is bringing back Roseanne for a revival run, as well as American Idol (with Katy Perry as the first declared judge), after Fox dumped the show a year ago. New legal drama Chicago Justice has been left on “the bubble” by NBC, whilst all of the other Dick Wolf Chicago shows and Law & Order:SVU (up for season 19) were unsurprisingly renewed, though expect Justice to probably return next spring.

Daniel crams in some lastminute revision. Ken asks after Daniel, but he’s shocked when Sinead snaps back at him. As Daniel sets off for his exam, Adam approaches and bundles him into the boot of Ken’s car.

Later, Mick discovers the truth about Max’s involvement and decides it’s time to have a word with him.

Friday Mick has returned to Albert Square, but will he discover the truth about what’s been going on in his absence? Meanwhile, when Kush tries to move on from Denise with a date at The Albert, Kim resorts to sabotage by trying to make his new love interest feel unwelcome. Elsewhere, Max gives Jack a reality check.

In a deserted car park, Adam hauls Daniel out of the boot and using the record facility on his phone, tells him it’s time he confessed to the attack on Ken. Has Adam got his man, or is he looking in the wrong direction? At the same time, when a decanter of whisky gets knocked over at Number 1, it jogs Ken’s memory about the night he was attacked. Wednesday Back at home, Sinead reveals to Daniel how Ken talked her into having an abortion. The police then question Daniel again about his movements on the night of Ken’s attack, as they’ve found discrepancies with the tram ticket he provided as part of his alibi. Ken calls at the flat and apologises to Sinead for all that he’s put her through. As he makes to leave, Ken is horrified to recognise a pair of trainers. Ken tells Roy that he remembers seeing the trainers when he was pushed, meaning the owner must be his attacker. Who do the shoes belong to?

Monday Mick is still in the dark over the recent changes at The Vic. Shirley knows it’s only a matter of time before he finds out what’s going on and confides in Whitney about how she forged Mick’s signature.

Meanwhile, Lauren tells Steven that she’ll have to cancel their plans for the evening as Josh has invited her to an important client event. Thursday Billy and Honey’s guests get a surprise when they arrive for their housewarming party. Meanwhile, Max gets a shock from an unexpected visitor. Elsewhere, Abi makes Steven suspicious over why Lauren might be working late again. After an evening growing closer at the office, Josh drops Lauren off home and Steven witnesses it.

Shirley realises it’s time to tell Mick the truth, but she’s already too late when she spots him talking to Fi. How will Mick react to his mum’s betrayal? Meanwhile, Denise is touched when Kush wishes her luck for her exam. She tells Kim that she just wants to be friends with Kush, but how will she react when Kim tells her about Kush’s recent date?

When a friend of Lofty’s is admitted to Keller, he’s forced to confront his colourful past.

Lofty soon realises that he can’t ignore his demons and needs to put things right in order to get his life back on track. Tuesday Mick desperately tries to find a loophole in the new lease, wanting things to get back to normal. He struggles to stay calm after talking to Linda and ends up taking his anger out on Whitney.

Meanwhile, Mo is still recovering from the death of her patient Trixie when she is offered Jac’s job. She takes it on, which causes tension between her and Mr T.

Great Canal Journeys goes to India Channel 4 hav announced a new series of Great Canal Journeys. National treasures Timothy West and Prunella Scales have been exploring canals for half a century – but now they embark on their most ambitious voyage ever – the waterways of India. Tim takes the helm to explore the extraordinary Kerala backwaters: a one thousand mile network of palm-fringed lakes, rivers banked by rice paddies - and some very familiar-looking British-built canals. For millennia merchants from east and west have been drawn here to trade in ginger, cardamom and black pepper, making the backwaters a thriving trade route for spices. All of life happens on Kerela’s back waters – Tim and Pru pass school busboats, laden cargo ships, and fishermen whose only tools are their hands. They explore a canal built by a local ruler to boost trade, make offerings at a temple raised up out of the waters, and, to Tim's delight, Pru dusts off her dancing shoes to learn the traditional Kerlan 'dance of the enchantress'.

They head on to what could be one of the most challenging voyage of Tim and Pru's lives... Leaving behind the safe confines of the canals, they head out into the unknown waters of the Brahmaputra river in the far north east of India. Unpredictable and wild, it's now rarely navigated, but in colonial times the river boasted a regular steam service carrying tea, bound for Britain. Indian travel has been a family affair for Pru, whose father served in the Indian army, and whose grandfather shipped cloth in Bombay. Now Pru has the chance to see India through their eyes, as she follows in their footsteps along the old British trade route. They are half a world away from home, but as long as they're together there are no limits to adventure for Tim and Pru.

ITV’s new Girlfriends

ITV have announced a brand new drama from Kay Mellor, featuring an all star cast including Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan. Girlfriends will follow childhood friends Linda (Phyllis Logan), Sue (Miranda Richardson) and Gail (Zoë Wanamaker) as they struggle with the responsibilities that come with being a modern woman of a certain age. After the sudden death of Linda’s husband Micky, the three friends find themselves back together again. Each has their own problems to face; from a looming divorce from the husband she still loves and the loss of a high-powered job through age discrimination, to juggling the endless responsibilities of their grandchildren and aging mothers.

As questions over the circumstances of Micky’s death start to be asked, accusations reveal secrets, deception and doubts that tear at the women’s friendship. We'll have to watch and see whether it survives... Speaking about her new role, Phyllis Logan said: ‘I’m thrilled to be part of Girlfriends, written by the wonderful Kay Mellor and to be working not only with her but the stellar cast that has been assembled. It’s a hugely exciting project and I feel enormously fortunate to be involved in it. I can’t wait to get started.’ With filming about to start on the show, an air date for the six-episode series has yet to be revealed. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long!

Downton Abbey film on the cards?

The Downton Abbey film that you keep hearing about is seemingly on the verge of actually happening. Less than two years after the period drama wrapped up on ITV, The Sun reports that producers are starting to line up crew members and accountants for a September start date. There's apparently already a script completed from Lord Julian Fellowes and a budget, so all that's standing in the way at the moment seems to be arranging the cast's schedules. One cast member who seems sceptical — to say the last — is Dame Maggie

Smith, who recently argued that Downton Abbey had already run out of interesting storylines. 'I just think it's squeezing it dry, do you know what I mean?' she said at the BFI Radio Times festival. 'I don't know what it could possibly be. It was so meandering, what would you [do]? 'Anyway that's not my problem. That's the Lord's [Julian Fellowes] problem.' In its six series on ITV in the UK and PBS in the US, Downton Abbey completely reinvigorated the period drama – landing itself 15 Primetime Emmy Award wins in the US, and a slew of BAFTAs at home.

Arena: American Epic is the untold story of a cultural revolution in the music of the USA. This trilogy of documentaries tells the stories of the pioneers of American roots music and how and why they came to be recorded. Through an unprecedented archive of previously unseen film footage, unpublished photographs and exclusive interviews with the last living witnesses of this incredible era of music, American Epic follows the stories through the lives of several families of different cultures and backgrounds as they confronted the technological dawn of the early 20th century. This first episode of Arena: American Epic takes us back to 1920s America to explore the birth of country music and urban blues. The growth of radio had shattered record sales and record companies went in search of music that was still unheard in an attempt to boost sales, travelling to rural America where the sounds of ordinary people were first recorded. In this episode we are introduced to the early recordings of The Carter Family; the founders of modern country music, which was steeped in the traditions of their isolated Appalachian community. This episode also features Will Shade and The Memphis Jug Band, whose music told the story of street life in Memphis and along with other groups like Whistler’s Jug Band, set the foundation of modern day rap and RnB. This episode traces their success which then launched Memphis as a vibrant new African American recording centre and Will Shade became a scout for Victor Records, which helped to establish many other artists.

In an ambitious 12-part series commission, Our Girl series three will comprise of three separate missions: in the first, to be transmitted on BBC One later this year, Georgie finds herself on a relief mission in Nepal following a devastating earthquake which has had hazardous and unpredictable consequences. Luke Pasqualino (The Musketeers, Skins) will return as Special Forces officer Elvis Harte, alongside Ben Aldridge (Lark Rise To Candleford, Fleabag) as Captain James. Two Section will include Rolan Bell (EastEnders) as Kingy, Sean Sagar (Top Boy) as Monk, Simon Lennon (Grantchester) as Brains, Sean Ward (Coronation Street) as Fingers, Mark Armstrong as Spanner, Dwane Walcott as Peanut and Ashley Houston as

Dyno. New cast include Rudi Dharmalingam (Rellik) as Milan and Harki Bhambra (Two Doors Down) as Rab. Michelle Keegan says: “I’m so happy to be shooting the new series of Our Girl out in Nepal and so very excited to bring more stories of Georgie Lane to life. It’s an amazing experience to be working on such important stories with such an incredible group of people.” Tony Grounds adds: “On a disaster relief mission to Nepal after an earthquake hits the country, 2 Section is thrown into a perilous and life-changing situation. Michelle Keegan, brilliantly reprising her role as Corporal Georgie Lane, shows remarkable courage in the face of adversity and inspires the troops to perform their duty with bravery and compassion." Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer, BBC Studios says: “We are absolutely

thrilled to be back in action, filming the new series of Our Girl right now in Kathmandu and Cape Town, with Michelle Keegan reprising her role as the inimitable Corporal Georgie Lane. With an expanded 12part series commission, this time Our Girl will follow our characters on three distinct missions in far-flung, dangerous parts of the globe - and we cannot wait to bring their new adventures back to BBC One later this year.” Further information on the following two missions will be released in due course. Series three will be directed by Tim Fywell (River, Happy Valley) and Jon Wright (Ordinary Lies, The Good Karma Hospital), produced by Tim Whitby (Shameless) and executive produced by Tony Grounds and Caroline Skinner for BBC Studios, and Christopher Aird for BBC.

The search is on for families to live off the land for new BBC Wales series Have you ever dreamed of escaping the rat race and moving to the countryside to live off the land? Could your family swap the city for a hill farm set in the spectacular countryside of North Wales? Do you have what it takes to change your life and take part in an exciting new television series? BBC Wales and Folk Films are launching a UK-wide search for three families who are prepared to take on the challenge of living and working on a hillside farm in Snowdonia this August. The major new series, to be broadcast on BBC One Wales and BBC Two next spring, will test three families who think they’ve got what it takes to be full-time farmers. They’ll live side by side in a purpose-built yurt camp for three weeks, working together on some tasks and competing against each other on others, as they try to convince a panel of expert judges they can handle life on a modern farm. Produced by Folk Films for BBC Wales, the series will be presented by Kate Humble and Gareth Wyn Jones (pictured). Kate Humble has made the move to the country herself, leaving the city behind to

live and work on a small holding in the Wye Valley. She’ll be on hand to keep an eye on the contestants and judge their efforts. She says: “This series promises to give real insight into the joys, challenges and frustrations of farming. For the families involved it is going to be a rollercoaster ride of getting to grips with all aspects of farming life; for the audience it is going to be as informative as it is entertaining. I know I'll learn a lot too! I'm really looking forward to it.” Alongside her will be resident farmer Gareth Wyn Jones. He will guide the families through each of the challenges, but warns he’s as a tough task-master who won’t go easy on his new apprentices. Gareth says: “I'll think I've got the best job in the world but that's not to say it’s always easy. I’m looking forward to meeting the fami-

lies, seeing how they rise to the challenge of farming life and putting them through their paces of course.” Every week Kate and Gareth will be joined by a guest judge - an experienced farmer, a brilliant food producer or a top chef. While no previous experience is necessary, applicants must be willing to try their hand at all manner of agricultural assignments as they find out just how tough farming can be. It will be three weeks of early starts, late finishes, dirty jobs in all weathers and facing the reality of producing food as they kill, cook and eat their livestock. To apply email familyfarm@folkfilms.tv, phone 02920 727 801 or write to Folk Films, 17 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF11 9HA. The closing date is Sunday 11 June.

Hi Richard, Just to let you know about a possible scam.I received a telephone call this afternoon, from Tel.No.196017720.The person (Asian accent) calling said that he was calling on behalf of Microsoft and wanted to talk about my computer.I told him that I did not own a computer and he asked if I had a laptop, I said no and hung up.Perhaps you could pass this on in the light of the current hacks that are being reported.George

Hi George, of course this one has been going around for years, I’m happy to share it of course but suspect that most people know about it as its been publicised well over the past few years – no harm in reminding people though.

Although Windows XP went “end of life” some time ago now, I know that there are still people on the Costa’s using it to run their computers. In the light of the recent ransomware issues all over the world I would strongly recommend that you download and install the following patch from Microsoft… https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55245

Kim Si-woo's victory at The Players Championship at Sawgrass on Sunday burnished the South Korean's reputation as one of the best young talents on the PGA Tour. Kim, 21, shot a three-under-par 69 on the final day to finish on 10 under and replace Adam Scott as the youngest winner. England's Ian Poulter was tied for the lead at one stage but finished three shots behind in a tie for second with Louis Oosthuizen after a 71. Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello and Kyle Stanley finished tied for fourth on six under, with Cabrera Bello producing a spectacular finish to get their fourth slot. Cabrera Bello holed out from 181 yards for the first albatross in tournament history on the 16th, then followed that with another two on the 17th, before holing from 35 feet for par on the last after hooking his tee shot into the water. But compatriot Sergio Garcia, who started the day well placed on five under, saw his hopes of adding the Players title to his Masters Green Jacket disappear on the outward nine. He dropped six shots and made just one birdie to fall back to level par and two double bogeys and three birdies on the back nine meant he finished one over. As for 21-year-old winner Kim, he knows his career will soon have to take a back seat to defending his country. South Korea requires all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 35 to complete at least 21 months in the military as a deterrent to North Korean aggression. It offers exemptions to athletes who win a medal of any colour at the Olympics or gold at the Asian Games. Unfortunately for Kim, winning the PGA Tour’s flagship event bring an exemption! "I really wish we could have that benefit," Kim told reporters on Sunday. "However, regardless of me winning this tournament I really have to go to the military service, and I've already decided I'm going to go so I'm ready for that." Kim's compatriot Bae Sang-moon, another two-time winner on the PGA Tour, lost a legal battle to defer his military service in 2015. He is expected to return for the 2018 season though it is unclear how much time it will take to regain top form after two years away from competitive action. Kim, who said he had not decided when he will undertake his military service, delivered an impressive three-stroke victory in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The win was Kim's second on the PGA Tour and earned him a five-year exemption on the Tour. Kim became the second South Korean to win the event after K.J. Choi in 2011 and he said he hoped his victory would help inspire his countrymen to raise their game.

Triathlon Test

Over 200 competitors took part in Sunday’s fifth Orihuela Beaches triathlon with the men’s contest being won by Alberto Gonzalez of the Kafewake Race Team , whilst the women’s race was won by Eva Sánchez. The event was organised

by Club Tragamillas and Orihuela council, and started with a 750 metre swim at La Glea beach. Then it was case of the triathletes getting on their bikes for a 20 kilometre ride, followed by the third disciplin of a five kilometre run.

Windy Sails

Strong winds made for a curtailed second race day of the SAMM Spring Series at Los Narejos. The breezes looked fine, but just before the first race, the gusts whipped up to 17 knots. All seven boats got away safely for the scheduled four lap race, which was shortened to three laps because of the conditions. Two boats retired, one because they got lost and the other because they missed a mark. The second scheduled race was cancelled because of the conditions. When the results were calculated on handicap, the winners were declared as Tug Wilson and Vernon O’Byrne in their Laser 2000.

No Happy Ending

Season’s End UD ALZIRA 2 CD ALMORADI 1

CD TORREVIEJA 1 CF BORRIOL 4 It was a final humiliation for CD Torrevieja last Saturday in front of the worst home crowd of the season at the Nelson Mandela stadium, with players in tears at the final whistle, emotionally charged with the ignominy of being relegated from the regional third division of the Spanish league. It had started extremely well with Torry playing bright attractive football. The manager gave several younger players the opportunity to show their skills and all did that magnificently. Teenager Lewis Booker captained the side with grit and determination, winning key tackles in midfield and using the ball intelligently. Joel, Damian and Nica all looked comfortable, able to show the talent they have and dominating the opposition. Before the quarter hour mark, Torry were in front. Precise passing down the right allowed the ultra-consistent Vicente Boix to pass the ball to Damian just inside the Borriol penalty area. Damian with

his back to goal, held off his marker, then swivelled sweetly on to his left foot and drove the ball low into the far corner of the net for a rare Torrevieja goal. Torry should have led three-nil at half time, as two wonderful chances were spurned soon after. Borja Mir made an intelligent diagonal run and was given an inch-perfect pass. He gathered the ball inside the box, took it round the keeper but then instead of hitting it first time, delayed his shot until the angle was so acute that the best he could do was to ram it into the side netting. Damian then was presented with a glorious chance, when five yards free inside the box. he too did not shoot early, instead allowing Edi in the Borriol goal to advance close to him and smother his effort. Torry's lead lasted until 51 minutes when Borriol equalised in bizarre fashion. A high ball was launched at the Torry goal and Buba followed it unhindered. He caught it a few feet from his goal line,

but then continued to back pedal, carrying the ball and himself into the net! It was an astonishing piece of ineptness and was all the encouragement the visitors needed. Nine minutes later, Badre put Borriol ahead before the referee awarded a penalty for a foul which was committed just outside the penalty area. Colomer put Buba the wrong way to make it three-one. Shortly after Pedreno made a triple substitution, bringing on his senior personnel, one of whom was Lewis Allen. The young Brit added more spirit and strength to attacks and almost pulled one back for the side when he dashed on to the end of a good pass and lobbed the keeper only to see the wind take his shot wide of the far post. As it happened Hector, added a fourth for Borriol to finish off a resoundingly miserable day for Torry and their fans, with a return to the Preferente, after a 12 year gap, looking come September.

There was nothing great at stake in this final match of the season for both sides, with Alzira casting an eye to their division 2a B play-off matches, whilst Almoradi (in their away green kit) were looking hopeful to erase the memory of their home finale against Muro the previous weekend. With the Preferente to come for Almoradi once again this autumn, those few

die hard supporters who made the journey north to Alzira would have been rewarded by seeing a much better performance, with the side set for a point, until Luis García sneaked the ball into the net with five minutes remaining. The match offered little in startling entertainment and Víctor Ruiz put the home side ahead in the 16th minute, with Obele equalis-

ing five minutes into the second half. Though Alzira dominated, Almoradi held their nerve and should have taken the lead in the 81st when substitute David hit the woodwork. The visitors were punished four minutes later as Alzira got their winner, as the curtain came down on a bitterly disappointing campaign for Almoradi in the third division.

So Near, So Far

It was close but no cigar for Orihuela (pictured before kick-off) in their late bid to get into the division two play-offs at the weekend. They had to hope for victory at Bunol, but it wasn’t to be as they could only get a one-all draw, and the teams above them, Castellon and

Ontinyent both won, so it didn’t really matter. Orihuela finished up just out of the play-off zone in fifth place, and were not overhauled by Villarreal who surprisingly lost three-nil at Muro, who have hit form too late, after the relegated side thrashed Almoradi last

week. Crevillente finished tenth in the national third division group sixi, after their one-all draw at Torre Levante, whilst Elche Ilicitano ended in eighth spot, despite losing their final match. three-two at home to Recambios Colon.

Looking Foward Having already booked their place in the play-offs to get into the national third division for next season, it was understandable that Thader took their foot off the gas on Sunday away to an Albatera side that badly needed a win in their battle against relegation. The greater focus came from Albatera, whilst Thader used the match as an opportunity to give some of their younger players a run out from the subs bench deep into the second-half, in the shape of José, Jordán and José María.

Albatera should have taken the lead in the 20th minute when home striker Victor had a penalty saved by Jovi. For Thader, Rubén Sanz and Dani Lucas were the pick of the Thader players in a goalless first half. The home side took the lead shortly after the interval with a powerful strike from Gabri that Jovi could do nothing about, and then they went two-nil up in the 55th minute from May. Thader did not roll over and had chances later on to pull a goal back to make it an exciting and nervous finish

ALBATERA CF 2 CD THADER 0 for the Albatera fans, but it wasn’t to be. Thader’s final league game before the play-offs comes at home this Sunday lunchtime to Jove Español.

A Neymar hat trick enabled Barcelona to stay top of the La Liga table on Sunday, with Luis Suarez getting on the scoresheet for the visitors. That was until Wednesday’s win for Real Madrid over Celta Vigo that put Zinedine Zidane’s team three points in front with one match remaining (see right) Las Palmas did pull one back at 2-1 through Pedro Bigas in the 63rd minute, but Neymar's third moments later took the game beyond the hosts, while his third and Barcelona's fourth completed the flattering scoreline. Their final match sees them at home to Eibar this Sunday night, needing a victory and Real to lose at Malaga.

Coach Zinedine Zidane underlined Cristiano Ronaldo's importance for Real Madrid after seeing him reach another historic landmark, insisting the record-breaking forward is "always there in the decisive moments". Ronaldo, Real's all-time leading scorer, passed a new club milestone on Sunday after scoring his 400th and 401st competitive goals in Sunday’s victory over Sevilla. Kroos and Nacho also got onto the scoresheet. Zidane admitted that Ronaldo simply cannot be kept out of the limelight, saying: "What can I tell you? He has something, he's different.”

CELTA VIGO 1 REAL MADRID 4

Valencia’s new manager is to be Marcelino Garcia Toral, with the ex-Villarreal boss signing a two-year deal at the Mestalla to become the sixth coach hired by Singaporean owner Peter Lim in the past two years. Caretaker coach Voro will see out the season until the end of the season, with Marcelino having been a candidate as far back as September when Pako Ayestaran was sacked just four games into the season. However, La Liga rules don't allow coaches to manage more than one club in the same season and Marcelino was deemed to have started the campaign at Villarreal, although he was sacked before their first game of the season in August. Marcelino enjoyed a largely successful time at Villarreal, leading them to fourth in La Liga and the semi-finals of the Europa League last season. Yet, he was surprisingly sacked just weeks before the start of the season due to differences with the club's board.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke Jimmy Greaves' 46-year European scoring record on Wednesday night as Real moved within a point of their first league title since 2012. Ronaldo, 31, fired Madrid ahead with his 367th goal in one of Europe's top-five leagues, eclipsing the mark set by Greaves in 1971. Ronaldo slotted in a second and, after John Guidetti gave 10-man Celta hope, Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos sealed it. Real will clinch La Liga with a draw at mid-table Malaga on Sunday. Rivals Barcelona must win their final game at home to Eibar and hope Zinedine Zidane's side lose. If the teams finish level on points then defending champions Barca will claim a third-straight title because of their superior head-to-head record.

This terrible result for Elche saw them slip into the Segunda division relegation area with four matches left to preserve their status, just two years after they were in the Primera division. Saturday’s match was all Groundhog Day for the Ilicitanos, as the previous week they lost away to second-bottom Mallorca, thanks to an injury time goal. It was the same again, this time at home to the bottom team, who also played the second half with just 10 men, after Urko Vera was sent off in the 39th minute. In fact Mirandes finished with just nine players on the field, as two minutes after Carlos Moreno got the only goal of the match, Provencio was sent off for his second yellow card. Over 14 and a half thousand spectators turned up at the Martínez Valero stadium, to see Elche get their fifth straight defeat, and it is difficult to work out how they avoid relegation on their current form. Mirandes meanwhile clocked up their second successive win, and created the most dangerous chances in the second half. Elche started positively, but an early 13th minute injury to Guillermo meant that acting coach Vicente Parras had to change his strike formation with Borja Valle joining Nino upfront. That seemed to unsettle the Ilicitanos, with the visitors getting more into the game until Urko Vera got his marching orders after hitting Correa with his elbow in the 39th minute.. Borja Valle then came close with a header which keeper Roberto saved, and then after the break, Nino squandered an opportunity when from short range in the Mirandes penalty area, he hit the ball high, wide, and unhandsome. Elche then started to get nervy, as Parras put on substitutes Hervías and Sory Kaba to get a goal, but to no avail, whilst Mirandes grew in confidence sensing the jitters of the home side. They looked brighter and then got the sucker-punch in the first minute of added time thanks to a Carlos Moreno header, from a Provencio free kick. Two defeats against relegation rivals is simply not good enough for Elche, and division B football beckons, especially as their fate is now out of their hands, at least for the time being. It’s now out of the frying pan and into the fire for the Ilicitanos, as they travel this evening (Friday) to third-placed Getafe.

United Beckons

Manchester United have been offered the chance to buy Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, according to media reports. Rodriguez is expected to leave Real this summer after becoming frustrated at the lack of playing time under Zinedine Zidane. Real signed the 25-year-old from Monaco after he helped Colombia reach the quarter finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The current European champions want to recoup most of the transfer fee they paid three years ago, but a source close to the player believes they will accept an offer in the region of 60 million euros. Rodriguez has the same agent as United manager Jose Mourinho - Jorge Mendes - and is currently contracted at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2020.

The Greenlands Bowls Club hosted last Saturday’s Opening Ceremony for the 23rd National Bowls Championships, sponsored once again by insurer Línea Directa. Taking place in beautiful sunshine, representatives of the 20plus competing clubs were all resplendent in their club colours, as they paraded in front of a healthy and supportive crowd, at a venue decked out with national and regional flags. The ceremony was attended by senior representatives of the National Bowls Federation as well as Línea Directa, who had travelled down to the event from Madrid, and a number of other local sponsors. Following the parade of clubs, umpires and Spanish International players, Spain National Director, Bob Donnelly, welcomed the bowlers and all of the guests and spectators to the championships. He gave particular thanks to sponsors Línea Directa who were supporting the championships for the second year. He said how delighted he was to have such a major international company endorsing the 2017 tournament and hoped the relationship would continue in future years. After the National Anthem, John Muldoon, now the proprietor of Quesada Bowls Club and himself a former National Director, then handed over the bowling green to the tournament committee after which a number of the sponsors delivered the opening bowls. Players, spectators and sponsors then retired for refreshments following which the first competitive action of the tournament got underway with the mixed triples event. The two Blue Ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies Singles, got underway yesterday Thursday with Martin Foulcer and Anne Eagle both hoping to retain their National titles. The tournament runs until this Sunday at the Greenlands Bowls Club, La Rafacia, Los Montesinos, with free entry for the matches, which start at 10.00 am. A drained but happy Lewis Hamilton hailed an "awesome" Sebastian Vettel last Sunday after winning a Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona that the Briton described as the "rawest" of fights. The two rivals, with seven world championships between them, were in a race of their own at the Circuit de Catalunya as they lapped all but Red Bull’s third placed Australian Daniel Ricciardo. Banging wheels, the one almost forcing the other off the road and getting hot under the collar as they fought for the lead, the Mercedes and Ferrari rivals produced a memorable thriller. "That’s how racing should be and I loved it and I wouldn’t change it for the world," gushed triple champion Hamilton after chalking up the 55th win of his career to cut Vettel's championship lead to six points. "I probably lost two kilos just in that race," added the Mercedes driver, who revealed he had no water bottle in his car in order to save weight. "It’s draining, the car is fast, to keep up with him... he drove fantastically well and it’s a real privilege to race against such an awesome driver." Hamilton had secured pole position on Saturday but wheel spin left him playing catch up as Vettel seized the lead from the start. What followed was a strategic tussle, with different tyre strategies that resulted in Hamilton entering his final stint on the quicker soft tyres and Vettel, still leading, on the harder mediums. The two went side by side as Vettel came out of the pits for the last time, the German holding off the Briton with a bit of strong-arm tactics. "I was more than half way alongside and he pushed me wide," complained Hamilton over the radio at the time, before taking the lead seven laps later with Vettel muttering that he had "no chance" of holding him off. "I think it was the rawest fight I can remember having for some real time, which I loved," said Hamilton. "This is what the sport needs to be every single race for sure. This is why I race and this is what got me into racing in the beginning. To have that close battle with him, with a four-time champ, is awesome." Spain followed on from a difficult Russian weekend for Hamilton, the Briton finishing fourth in an overheating car. He might have been hot on Sunday, but the Mercedes was not the problem. "From turn one to the end it was flat chat (full speed)," he said. "You’re just using everything you’ve got... to stay on (keep up with) Sebastian was a killer."

Going Well

Two-time Formula One champion Spain’s Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest in practice on Wednesday for the Indy 500 as strong winds made it difficult for the drivers. "It was tricky," said Alonso. “The conditions didn't help, but for me any condition is still a good lesson. "Everything went according to plan. The team are using the practice runs also to test something in the background on engine tuning, so it was a productive day." The McLaren Fl driver, who finished 12th in the Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix is bidding to become just the second driver to clinch the prestigious ‘triple crown’. This includes the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours Le Mans race, and the Indy 500, with Graham Hill the only driver who completed the treble.

CONOR’S DEAL

CALCULATORS AT THE READY!

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor claims he has signed his half of a deal to fight former five-weight boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather. There have been rumours of a proposed bout between the Irishman and Mayweather since late 2016 following McGregor's win over Eddie Alvarez to become a two-weight UFC world champion. UFC president Dana White confirmed McGregor had agreed terms and that any meeting with Mayweather would be "straight up boxing" rather than any mix with MMA.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal will enter this Sunday’s final day of the Premier League season fighting for two spots in next year's Champions League. With the title and relegation issues all done and dusted, the battle for Europe remains the one issue to be settled this weekend. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are already guaranteed of taking their places in the group stage draw, but there are still two places up for grabs. Third place enters directly into the group stage, fourth place must go through the Champions League playoff round. Fifth place settles for the Europa League. Manchester City will need to draw at Watford to be absolutely sure of at least fourth place, as they go into that game three points ahead of Arsenal, and two ahead of Liverpool. They could be overtaken by both if they lose heavily at Watford, Arsenal win well at home to Everton, and Liverpool are victorious too. City are two points ahead of Liverpool but only three goals better off in goal difference, so a draw and a three-goal win for Liverpool could bump City into fourth on goals scored, though 3-0 and 3-3 would leave them with identical records . Both Arsenal and Liverpool failing to win would also secure City's place in the group stage -- if either fail to win, City will at least be fourth. Liverpool know they have to win at home to already-relegated Middlesbrough on Sunday to keep Arsenal at arm's length. A draw, and they would be overtaken by an Arsenal win. If Liverpool lose and Arsenal draw, then Liverpool are guaranteed to be fourth unless they lose by more than one goal. Lose by two goals and it goes to goals scored and a possible playoff. Lose by three goals and Arsenal need a point. They could still qualify with a defeat, too, if Arsenal are also beaten. There is the chance Arsenal could qualify for the Champions League with a point if Liverpool lose by at least two goals, but in reality they must win and hope Liverpool do not. They could overtake Man City if they win and Pep Guardiola's team lose, but there would need to be an unlikely six-goal swing! Such are the permutations, that it is theoretically possible that a special play-off match might be needed if two teams finish level in every aspect, but let’s consider that if it hits us come ten to six this Sunday afternoon! On top of what might happen this weekend, Manchester United would qualify for the Champions League on Wednesday night if they beat Dutch side Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm. There’s a lot of money riding on it for United, as failure to qualify for Europe's flagship club competition for a second successive season would trigger a £21m penalty clause in their 10-year, £750m sponsorship deal with Adidas. United also expect to earn up to £30m more by being in the Champions League.

CAPITAL QUITS

London has withdrawn interest in hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games, leaving Birmingham and Liverpool as the UK's potential candidate cities.
