orrevieja property owners are more likely to be burgled than any other municipality over 30 thousand residents in Alicante Province. The figures produced by the Interior Ministry in Madrid show crime on the rise in the area, yet falling dramatically next door in Orihuela. There were 404 burglaries from properties in the first three months of 2017, compared to 269 in Alicante City which has four times Torrevieja's population. The figures also show that home burglaries have rocketed by 28 percent compared to a year earlier, with the Guardia Civil's union in Torrevieja calling for more officers to be employed so that the statistics can be

round 30 thousand Torrevieja residents will no longer suffer the foul summer stenches that come from the city’s EDAR sewage treatment plant, as

reversed. 327 incidents were in domestic homes as opposed to businesses, and that saw an annual rise of 33 per cent. Many houses that were targetted are holiday homes which would sit

empty early in the year. The total number of crimes logged in Torrevieja came in at 1,776 compared to 1,678 the previous year, with a fall in thefts and violent crime bringing some good news.

The poor Torrevieja figures contrast strongly with the neighbouring Orihuela municipality, which saw a 22 percent drop in home robberies compared to 2016, together with a significant fall in thefts.

NICER SMELLS work starts next week on a 230 thousand euro project to eliminate the smells. The smells, especially strong in warm weather, have been a long-standing

problem and Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolón, says this summer be the last time that people’s noses will be put out of joint, with the works set to finish in mid-August. The main problems have

been in the San Roque area; La Avenida de Pinoso; as well as the urbanisations at La Veleta, Mar Azul, los Balcones, Playa Verde, Lo Ferrís, and Lago Jardín including Torrevieja Hospital.

The Coastal Agency has told Torrevieja council that the weekly Wednesday market at La Mata has to move because the site between the sea and the N-332 highway is sinking. The number of trucks in the area loading and unloading on market day has already been reduced to ease the stress on the site, along with general parking restrictions during the week. Markets councillor Javier

Manzanares (pictured) said that the market will not be suspended, as the search is on for another site, with the move set to happen "as soon as possible". Torrevieja Mayor José Manuel Dolón is to hold talks with the stall holders and local representatives, with Manzanares claiming that there are a variety of site options available, although he would not reveal what they are.

ers in the San Miguel de Salinas and Orihuela areas, as well as the Murcia region. The operation involved taking away the fruit to Bordeaux in France for onward distribution, with the growers not getting their promised payments which amounted to total of around 400 thousand euro.

A 58-year-old Hondón de los Frailes grocery store owner and a 48-year-old woman, have been arrested in Hondón for a string of bank robberies over the last four years The Guardia Civil arrested the Spanish couple who are believed to have accumulated 350 thousand euro in seven violent hold-ups. The duo have also been charged with the illegal possession of weapons. Two days before their arrest, the modern-day Bonnie and Clyde had stolen 50 thousand euro from a bank in La Murada, with previous robberies in the Orihuela area at Granja de Rocamora and Raiguero de Bonanza. The crooks had also raided banks at El Siscar and El Raal, in the Murcia region, as well as Monforte

del Cid and Sax in Alicante Province. All of the robberies were at banks in rural areas, making a quick getaway easier. A comprehensive monitoring of a targetted branch would lead to a full assessment of the times that security guards would visit, along with the comings and goings of the employees. The 58-year-old man would threaten bank staff with a gun and he was said to be difficult to identify despite appeals over the years. Apparently he would remove his spectacles before going into the bank to commit the crime and looked quite different without them, making his identification more difficult. He was remanded into custody by a judge, whilst woman was granted bail.

The body of 31-year-old woman, Beatriz Ros, who worked at a centre for autistic people in the Molina de Segura area of Murcia was discovered at her workplace on Sunday morning. A 48year-old man , José Antonio Jara García, was found hung in an adjoining room. Ros was the mother of a four-year-old boy, and the daughter of ex-Molina councillor, Cayetano Ros. Beatriz, who was in the process of going through a divorce, was said to have been in a relationship with the man who was a caretaker at the Astrade centre. She was stabbed to death with a knife, before he took Jara Garcia took his own life. It’s the first case of death due to gender violence in the Murcia region this year.

Gang Held A prostitution ring operating across the Valencia region which used Nigerian women, has been smashed by the National Police. The gang, led by two sisters, operated in Alicante Province and around Valencia City, with destitute Nigerians being shipped over for what was promised as “a better life”. Six people were arrested, with four Nigerians freed by the National Police.

Roaming mobile phone charges using Spanish providers like Movistar, Mas Movil, and Yoigo will be scrapped as from Thursday June 15th. Movistar customers will be able to make and receive calls from anywhere in the European Union – along with Iceland, Norway and

There appears to be an end in sight to the year-long suspension of the Arenales de Sol hotel redevelopment, after building work was stopped by authorities because the Princesol chain had allegedly gone beyond the scope of what was allowed. The group, which had been converting the longdeserted structure into a luxury hotel and spa complex at a cost of up to 11 million

euro, had been accused of allowing internal demolition work, which had not been mentioned in their plans. Now Princesol have been given permission to do the demolition work that they wanted to do, but will need to remove asbestos-based cement in the structure first, and they need to submit project plans on how they will do that to the Valencian Health and Safety Executive.

A two-year-old boy was rushed to Alicante General Hospital on Sunday after falling from the fourth floor of an apartment balcony in the city. The drama happened on Avenida Maestro Alonso right next door to the hospi-

Mystery Man A man who showed a set of fake identity cards to National Police agents at Alicante-Elche airport was arrested last week. He was driving a car into the airport and produced a fake driving license as showing agents a bogus Slovenian ID card. The agents used scanners which showed both cards to be copies, and then a passport was produced which was also a fake. The man refused to reveal his true identity to the officers, and said he would only do that before a judge. His wish was granted as he was charged on a variety of counts, as well as having his car towed away to the municipal pound.

Anti-Austerity Demo

Tens of thousands of people rallied in Madrid last Saturday for a "march of dignity" to demand better wages and job security as Spain's economy improves. Demonstrators from all over the country marched down Madrid's main avenue, the Gran Via, behind a banner reading "bread, work, homes and equality." Dozens of trade

unions and left-wing groups also joined the protest. Organisers put the turnout at 200 thousand, while the local authorities put it at only six thousand, whilst journalists estimated number in the tens of thousands. Labour reforms adopted in 2012 by Mariano Rajoy's Partido Popular government have

helped to spur growth and bring unemployment down from 27 percent at the start of 2013 to 18.7 percent in the first quarter of this year. But critics say the downside is that many jobs are precarious, with no guarantee of working hours, and are often poorly paid. The minimum wage in Spain is 825 euro per month.

Brexit Parallel

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has warned Catalan business leaders of "terrible economic consequences" if separatists win independence for the northeastern region. Speaking in the Catalan coastal town of Sitges, Rajoy told the Circulo de Economia business group that if Catalunya breaks away from Spain it could

lose up to 30 percent of its GDP and would have to seek readmission to the European Union. Catalunya represents a fifth of Spain's GDP and has a population of over seven million, based around the regional capital of Barcelona. Rajoy compared the campaign for the referendum on independence to the recent vote in Britain to leave the EU.

"The British were told that Brexit would be great, and later some of them have seen that that was an exaggeration and that they had been lied to," Rajoy said. Rajoy repeated his pledge that his government won't permit the referendum, which he has called unconstitutional. "I am not going to authorize a referendum on inde-

pendence because I don't want to and because I cannot do so," Rajoy added. The Catalan government has said it will hold the vote anyway by September. The president of the Circulo de Economia, Juan Jose Bruguera, urged Rajoy to resolve the political conflict by finding "alternative means that are not just black and white."

with the winner kindly donating it back, and local business C.J. Builders generously paying 250 euro for it, which was a big boost to the final sum raised.

and thanked Marlene for her dedication to fund raising and for donating the funds raised to the British Legion’s 2017 Poppy Appeal. Gerry is pictured receiving the cheque from Marlene (left) and Joan (right).

Carl and Nicola Louden have quickly established themselves within the local community, having moved part-time to the Cabo Roig area a year ago. The couple quickly became members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Torrevieja Royal Naval Association, but as a recently retired Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy, Carl still has commitments back home. One of those is to serve in the

Royal Naval Reserve for five years, to which he was transferred at the end of last year. Recently Carl was given an award at Portsmouth on board Nelson’s former flagship, HMS Victory, from Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock OBE. It was in recognition of his work in supporting part-time reservists Carl is pictured with his wife Nicola on board HMS Victory.

Canary Deal Spain's minority Partido Popular government has cobbled together enough support from opposition parties in Parliament to pass its 2017 budget. Nueva Canarias' sole member of Parliament represents the final vote Rajoy' government needs to obtain a majority of 176 votes. Rajoy's ruling PP had

already struck deals with two other opposition parties. Nueva Canarias President Roman Rodriguez (pictured) says his party will vote for the budget in exchange for

A Valladolid mother has been arrested after trying to sell her newborn baby to her sister for five thousand euro. Because the two women involved looked similar, the plan was for the child's aunt to pretend to be the mother during the paperwork process at the hospital (pictured). The child's biological father – the sister's husband – has also been detained. The baby's aunt and uncle were unable to have children but were desperate for a child, and they struck a deal whereby the biological father would conceive a child by his sister-in-law and pay her five thousand euros for carrying the baby and giving birth.

Authorities got suspicious when they realised the child's mother, a Romanian national aged 32, had been to several post-partum medical appointments. Slight differences in facial features between the sisters enabled the police to sort out who

was who after taking fingerprints. The baby was held at Valladolid hospital's neonatal unit until his true parents' identity could be ascertained, and was then taken into care by social services.

Pension Deficit Scandal Creates Upsurge in ExPat Transfers By Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management

value to secure their pension pots. As schemes look to reduce their liabilities, in some cases offering enhanced rates to get members off their books, expats are taking advantage of these record high values. In some cases, they could be more than 20 times the value of the annual pension offered on retirement.

With the majority of British expats here in Spain aged over 55 and sat firmly in the retirement bracket, the Pension Deficit problem is an extremely pressing issue. At a glance, the latest news regarding pension deficit does not look good. Huge companies such as BMW, Royal Mail and Tata Steel’s pension schemes are in murky waters, with the latter facing a balloon in deficit of £2 billion and the likelihood of insolvency unless something can be resolved. BHS also hit the headlines last year in a similar way, where the collapse of the department store led to a loss of over 11,000 jobs and left a deficit of roughly £571 million. The only way the scheme could be rescued was through a settlement of £363 million to be handed over from disgraced previous owner Sir Phillip Green, which stopped the scheme from falling into the Pension Protection Fund - which is essentially the government’s pension lifeboat. This leads us to ask the question: what exactly is a pension deficit? A pension deficit is defined as the gap between how much a pension is required to pay out as opposed to how much money is actually available. The Pension Fund’s liabilities are greater than its assets. Deficits are reported to The Pensions Regulator, and the sponsoring employer must create a plan to close the deficit – although this will often be over a significant period. However, to fund the gap caused by deficit often means that the sponsoring employer is likely to have its growth affected, as it directs revenue and profit into closing the gap which could have an impact on employee’s salaries. It’s not impossible for a sponsoring employer to become insolvent. In this situation, the pension fund will be accepted under the Pension Protection Fund. In many cases this will not necessarily mean that the pension will be fully protected and members therefore may not receive the full benefits promised to them. Pension deficits are specific to pensions known as Final Salary schemes, but many firms are now blaming longer life expectancy, low interest rates and falling bond yields in their

SIR PHILLIP GREEN decision to stop offering this type of scheme. Final Salary Schemes promised to pay an annual income in retirement based on the employee’s salary in the final year of employment and their length of service. It is usually paid at the rate of one-sixtieth of final salary multiplied by the number of years of scheme membership. For example, someone who is a scheme member for 40 years would retire on two-thirds of final salary. Some schemes have moved to an “Average Salary” pension to reduce their liabilities and nearly all existing Final Salary schemes are closed to new members. Most have now been replaced by Defined Contribution schemes, whereby employer and employee contribute to a pension pot. As mentioned before, there are a few reasons why Pension Deficits exist. The first is the increase in life-expectancy of recipients. For someone reaching retirement age at 65, the life expectancy for a man is now as high as 86 and for a woman it is 89. Final Salary Schemes promised coverage for life in retirement, but those who are living longer cause a requirement for money to be paid out for longer than was originally planned. Also, for a scheme to buy ‘an income for life’ for a member, they are required to invest in Gilts or Government Bonds. Historically low interest rates have negatively affected Gilt yields and therefore the pension schemes’ investment performance. Many Expats are using their right to request a transfer

Transferring the Cash Value to a new UK or Overseas Pension enables expats to protect their pension funds in a new scheme. The crystallised funds are then available for flexible drawdown, including taking a lump sum from the age of 55. Unlike “Final Salary” (DB) schemes, unused funds are also available to beneficiaries. As we get into hotter temperatures, there comes the sad annual reminder that every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car—even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs. Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour. Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads. If you see a dog left alone in a hot car, take down the car’s colour, model, make, and license plate number, and get in touch with the local police. If you are travelling your dog during the hot Spanish summer, here are some useful tips:-

• Consider the weather and your journey in advance, especially if you don't have air conditioning in your vehicle. Think about whether the journey is absolutely necessary for your dog. • Make sure your dog has plenty of space and isn't squashed or forced to sit in direct sunlight. • Always make sure there is shade provided: even in an air conditioned vehicle a dog can become too hot if in full sun. • Make sure plenty of stops are taken with lots of water available to drink. • Take cold water in a thermos rather than a plastic bottle so it stays cold rather than being lukewarm. Ice cubes are helpful in a thermos for cooling too. • Be aware of the signs of overheating in dogs, which include panting, disorientation, excessive thirst, dark gums, vomiting, diarrhoea and losing consciousness. • Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle, even

with the window open and water available. Take them out and leave them in a secure, cool place with access to shade and water or take them with you, Let your dog take part in unnecessary exertion in hot weather, or stand in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time. When walking your dog, keep in mind that if it feels hot enough to fry an egg outside, it probably is. Pavements and surfaces over here in Spain get more than hot enough to cook an egg in five minutes. And it can do the same to our canine companions’ sensitive foot pads. It gets hot enough to cause burns, permanent damage and scarring after just one minute of contact, and even rapid burns and blistering in the sort of temperatures than we experience over here. Hot pavements and parking areas can not only burn paws, they also reflect heat onto dogs’ bodies, increasing their risk of deadly heatstroke. If you wouldn’t put your dog in a frying pan, please don’t make him or her walk on hot pavement. Always test the pavement and the walking surface with your hand before setting out (too hot to touch is too hot for the dog). Walk early in the morning or late at night when it’s cooler, carry water and take frequent breaks in shady spots and never make dogs wear muzzles that restrict their breathing.

Seagate Wealth Management

Is your money working hard enough for you? Many people put their savings and investments in the hands of a financial adviser and then simply sit back believing their money is growing and being managed. If this sounds like you, then maybe you should check on your funds. Reviewing and rebalancing your investment pot once a year could boost long-term returns on a typical £13,000 investment by more than £5,000, according to analysis by an asset manager. According to Fidelity International, this could be costing these investors serious money. The investment firm took a theoretical investment pot of £13,000 and put £1000 into each of the 13 best performing asset classes of the past 20 years. It then modeled the returns that would have been received over that time period and found a not-too-shabby £52,881 would be banked. Turning £13,000 into nearly £53,000 without lifting a finger is good, but £58,000 is better. Over 8.6 per cent better. This is the figure Fidelity said would be returned when the same £13,000 was put into the same asset classes, but instead of leaving it untouched for 20 years the portfolio was rebalanced annually to bring it back in line with the original split of assets. Not only can reviewing and rebalancing your portfolio significantly boost your returns, it also helps to ensure that your portfolio continues to be aligned to your risk appetite and objectives - as market movements can knock your portfolio out of kilter If you would like to sit down with one of our financial advisers and have a free review of your portfolio, then call us on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth .es

Refund Move

Torrevieja's deputy mayor, Fanny Serrano, says the council is to launch a process against former and current Partido Popular councillors and officials, including ex-international residents office director Graham Knight, for the refund of mobile phone calls

that were allegedly used on private business five years ago. A legal case over the use of the phones was eventually dropped after the court said it could not find evidence that a serious breach of rules over using public funds had taken place.

Some former councillors accumulated more than three thousand euros in calls over a year. Serrano says that an investigation will take place to see who owes what, and how much money everybody has returned to the council so far.

Flood Work Work has been taking place to stop serious flooding happening on the N-332 in the La Mata area of Torrevieja, after the problems of last winter The stormwater drainage improvements are being carried out on the N-332 in the light of the highway being totally blocked off in December's storms, with two drainpipes being connected to allow more water to escape when the next storm happens.

Pigs Roasted Over a thousand pigs were killed in a fire that destroyed a pig farm in the Murcia region. Murcia emergency services said that 1,036 pigs died last Friday in the fire that engulfed a roofed area filled with pig pens in Puerto Lumbreras. Authorities gave no indication as to what caused the blaze.

Two months of improvement work on Catral’s Parque Juan Pablo II between Calle La Cruz and Calle El Molinoy has finished, with a complete renovation of the childrens play area. Several areas of the park has also seen the laying down of artifical lawn, as well as better plumbing and drainage in the project which was paid for by Alicante Provincial Council.

Blueberry Ginger Mojito Pitchers Ingredients For the Ginger simple syrup: 1/4 cup grated fresh ginger 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup cold water For the Mojito: 1 cup fresh blueberries

1 lime, cut into wedges 20 to 24 fresh mint leaves 4 ounces ginger simple syrup 4 ounces vodka 5 ounces club soda Ice cubes Blueberries, for garnish Mint leaves, for garnish Directions Peel and grate the ginger and add it, together with the sugar and cold water, to a saucepan. Bring it to the boil and stir until the sugar dissolves. Cover and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain and cool in the refrigerator when done. Give it a quick stir and then pour into glasses with ice cubes. Garnish with a handful of fresh blueberries and a sprig of mint. The recipe outlined below is for 2 tall glasses, but you can use the ratio to make pitchers (depending on how big your

pitcher is double or quadruple the recipe). Combine the blueberries, mint leaves and lime wedges in the pitcher and muddle it in there with the back of a wooden spoon. When you are ready to serve add the vodka, ginger simple syrup and club soda. Stir and pour into glasses with a couple of ice cubes. Garnish each glass with some fresh blueberries and a sprig of fresh mint.

Part-time Vegetarians Can Almost Halve Risk Of Obesity Cutting down on meat parttime can almost halve the risk of obesity, scientists have said.

previously as a way to protect the heart. Previous studies have suggested that the growing consumption of meat contributes as much as sugar to the growing global prevalence of obesity.

According to a new study of 16,000 people, eating a few more meat-free meals and extra fruit and veg each week can help keep the weight off.

A study by scientists at the University of Adelaide suggested that fats and carbohydrates can provide us with enough energy to meet the needs of most modern lifestyles and are digested faster than protein.

Previous studies have suggested strict vegetarians tend to be slimmer on the whole, but scientists have said this new “flexitarian” approach could be a more realistic way to get people to cut down on meat, rather than asking them to forego it altogether.

This means the body converts energy in meat into fat to be used later.

Professor Maira BesRastrollo from the University of Navarra in Spain, who led the study, said: “It’s not a radical shift to a vegetarian diet, it’s more a gentle approximation. It’s not strict.” Meat is believed to cause weight gain because it contains more fat and is denser in calories so people take in more calories before feeling full. The study recorded the eating habits of 16,000 people over a period of ten years

In 2015, the World Health Organisation said processed meats such as a bacon and sausages were “probably carcinogenic”.

and found that 584 people had become obese, The Times reported. It found that the more plants and less meat people ate, the less likely they were to become obese even after adjusting for age, starting weight and other unhealthy

habits such as having a sedentary lifestyle. Professor Bes-Rastrollo told the European Congress on Obesity in Porto, Portugal, that the risk of obesity was 15 per cent higher in the 20% of people with the most carnivorous diets compared

with those in the middle fifth. For those in the lowest fifth, the people who ate the least meat, the risk was 43 per cent lower. The study found that even those in the most vegetarian group of the study were still

consuming 142g of meat a day compared with 198g a day in the highest group. But their diet contained twice as much fruit and vegetables, nuts and olive oil, reflecting a more “Mediterranean diet” which has been recommended

The classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) gave it the highest possible carcinogen rating, shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes. It estimated that 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide can be attributed to diets high in processed meat.

Uncooked Fish Could Have Parasitical Worm Sushi containing uncooked fish can be infected with a worm-like parasite that attaches itself to the bowel, causing severe pain, vomiting and fever, doctors have warned in the BMJ journal. A “previously healthy” man, 32, was admitted to hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, with symptoms that initially proved difficult to diagnose. But, after doctors questioned him, he told them he had recently eaten sushi.

Not all sushi is made with raw fish, much of it is cooked. However, another popular Japanese form of cuisine, sashimi, is based on uncooked fish. Putting a camera into his upper intestine led to the discovery of a parasite, the larvae of an anisakis nematode worm, attached to the inside of his bowel. And it was this that had been causing the man “severe epigastric pain, vomiting and low-grade fever” and “moderate

abdominal tenderness” for about a week, the doctors wrote.

suspected in patients with a history of ingestion of raw or uncooked fish.”

The BMJ article said most cases described in the medical literature were from Japan because of the popularity of seafood.

After the worm was removed using a special type of net, the man’s symptoms stopped immediately.

“However, it has been increasingly recognised in Western countries,” the doctors wrote. “Owing to changes in food habits, anisakiasis is a growing disease in Western countries, which should be

The doctors said the parasite was associated with a number of health problems. “Patients can have allergic symptoms like angioedema, urticarial and anaphylaxis,” they wrote. “Gastrointestinal

symp-

toms include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting and complications like digestive bleeding, bowel

obstruction, perforation and peritonitis can also arise. Patients can also have a low-grade fever.

What is Normal Blood Pressure? as 1980, a blood pressure reading of 170/100 was still within the range of normal in people over 70 without health problems.

Blood Pressure records the pressure of blood in the heart and arteries. Blood pressure records two values - systolic blood pressure, the reading appearing on top, and diastolic blood pressure, the bottom reading. The systolic or top reading measures the pressure when the heart contracts and distributes blood around the body. The diastolic or bottom reading measures the blood pressure when the heart relaxes in between contractions. The diastolic blood pressure is a better indicator of blood pressure as it records the blood pressure when the heart is relaxed. When the heart contracts, it squeezes blood rich in oxygen and nutrients into

the largest artery in the body, the aorta, and from there to the rest of the body. The heart is divided into chambers, and in between contractions, blood refills the chambers in readiness

for the next contractions. The systolic blood pressure which measures blood pressure when the heart contracts is influenced by a person's physical activity,

emotional state and even location and change continuously in the course of a day. There is no such thing as normal blood pressure reading, however, many medical professionals agree

that readings above 140/90 mmHg may indicate higher than normal blood pressure. The definition of high blood pressure has changed over the years. As recently

High blood pressure is a symptom of a disease and not an actual illness. Rising blood pressure is an early warning signal indicating something wrong somewhere in the body. Conditions like stomach infections and flu will cause increased blood pressure. Unfortunately, many people are prescribed blood pressure medication without proper investigations to determine the actual cause of the high blood pressure.

Drinking coffee may help prevent liver cancer, study suggests Increasing coffee consumption may help to stave off liver cancer, a new study has suggested. Researchers have found that people who drink more coffee are less likely to

develop hepatocellular cancer (HCC), the most common form of primary liver cancer – and the effect was even found in decaffeinated coffee. Experts

from

the

University of Southampton and the University of Edinburgh examined data from 26 studies involving more than 2.25 million participants. Compared with people who drank no coffee, those

who drank one cup a day had a 20% lower risk of developing HCC, according to the study, published in the journal BMJ Open. Those who consumed two cups a day had a 35% reduced risk and for those who drank five cups, the risk was halved. They found the protective effect for decaf was “smaller and less certain than for caffeinated coffee”. The authors wrote: “It may be important for developing coffee as a lifestyle intervention in chronic liver disease, as decaffeinated coffee might be more acceptable to those who do not drink coffee or who limit their coffee consumption because of

caffeine-related symptoms.” Lead author Dr Oliver Kennedy, of the University of Southampton, said: “Coffee is widely believed to possess a range of health benefits, and these latest findings suggest it could have a significant effect on liver cancer risk. “We’re not suggesting that everyone should start drinking five cups of coffee a day though. There needs to be more investigation into the potential harms of high coffee-caffeine intake, and there is evidence it should be avoided in certain groups such as pregnant women. “Nevertheless, our findings are an important devel-

opment given the increasing evidence of HCC globally and its poor prognosis.” Professor Peter Hayes, of the University of Edinburgh, added: “We have shown that coffee reduces cirrhosis and also liver cancer in a dose-dependent manner. “Coffee has also been reported to reduce the risk of death from many other causes. Our research adds to the evidence that, in moderation, coffee can be a wonderful natural medicine.” Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in 2015, 4,673 new cases of liver cancer were diagnosed in England.

The Top Spa Resorts in Spain Most of us tend to have a fairly busy life – yes, even in Spain. There are responsibilities, deadlines, places we have to be, people we have to see and chores that have to be completed. Sometimes it can get a bit too much. When was the last time you relaxed? I mean properly relaxed? Switched off your mobile phone, computer, tablet, radio, and just sat still and calmed your mind? The answer to that for most would be “not in a very long time, if ever.” We should make time to relax the mind, relax the body and totally unwind on a regular basis. Forget about your home, your duties, your job and your life, just for 24 hours or even a few days. Going around on a daily basis at a speed of 100km/hour is unsustainable, and, in reality, you’re doing a disservice to yourself and those around you if you’re not operating at your best. Taking the time to chill out and really disconnect will totally recharge your batteries and ensure that you bounce back with a spring in your step and with so much more energy than before. You and those around you will feel the benefits. And what better place to do this than at a spa resort, an oasis of calmness and tranquillity, preferably a natural one that’s hidden away in nature, away from the distractions of modern life. Here are some of the best in Spain.

Abama Golf & Spa Resort, Tenerife Well, who wouldn’t want to go to Tenerife for a few days, for starters? This spa resort is apt for the whole family, couples, or individuals as it combines the concept of relaxation and rest with that of being active in a healthy way. As well as a wellness centre where you can totally destress in the hydrotherapy circuit, treat your body to a therapeutic massage or body wrap and mud bath, for those who prefer to wind down through exercise, there’s also the chance to play golf, tennis and paddle, swim or use the gym. The resort is set in 160 hectares of private land in the quiet, tourist-free area of Guía de Isora, in the southwest of the island. There are stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the neigh-

bouring island of La Gomera, not to mention the more immediate sights of all the plants, lush greenery, palm trees and the volcanic slopes of the Teide, Spain’s highest peak at which the resort sits at the bottom. The surrounding architecture is influenced by the proximity of Africa and marries the Moorish structures of Morocco and the Far East with the finesse and style of New York. Balneario de Archena, Murcia The natural spring thermal waters in this area, which maintain an average constant temperature of 34-36°C, are well-known across the country for their mineral and medicinal qualities. For this reason, the Archena Spa is extremely popular with those who suffer from skin or joint problems, or with those who just want to improve their health. The resort is set on a 200,000-square-metre plot right in the heart of the Valle de Ricote Natural Park. The Archena Spa resort consists of three hotels, with the main attraction for those interested in the healing properties of the water being the Thermalium Spa. The Spa includes a number of swimming pools located outside complete with water jets and spurts, waterfalls, Jacuzzis, a flotation pool, a crosscurrent pool, a natural essences pool, an igloo and so much more. There are also saunas, massage areas, hammocks, sunbathing areas and beauty treatments. A standard room at the Balneario de Archena Hotel Levante is priced at just 64 euro, and it’s just down the road! Hotel Balneario Lanjarón, Granada The Spa resort of Lanjarón is another that is renowned for the healing properties of its natural water. Housed in the idyllic setting of the National Park of the Sierra Nevada, the resort has it all – breathtaking scenery, stunning views of the mountains, history, fantastic architecture, and, of course, peace, peace and more peace. The outstanding facilities of this spa include the six mineral-medicinal fonts of natural water, which are said to treat ailments such as poor circulation, poor digestion and water retention. In addition, there’s the Flotarium, a weightlessness pool, for total muscle relaxation, the excellent thermal treatments and the location itself. The restaurant bases its menus on featuring local and healthy produce. With the historical Arabic-influenced city of Granada just a short drive away, and the Sierra Nevada on your doorstep, what better place to enjoy the surroundings and totally relax? Balneario del Gran Hotel La Toja, Pontevedra This is one of the most well-known spa resorts in Spain. La Toja is a small island on the coast in the heart of the tourist area of Galicia. It is also famed for its mineral-medicinal thermal waters which remain at temperatures between 20 and 60°C. The thermal water of La Toja is said to help with skin inflictions, rheumatism, respiratory problems and muscular and joint pains. For those that just want to relax, the location is idyllic and you’ll only be disturbed by the sounds of the ocean lapping at the shore or the sound of the wind whistling through the trees. For those that want to relax and be pampered there are infinite possibilities as guest can enjoy the thermal baths, seaweed wraps, massages, mud treatments, aromatherapy packages, beauty treatments and much more. Gran Hotel Balneario Puente Viesgo, Cantabria Cantabria is known for being green. Everywhere you look you’re surrounded by green trees, green hills, green grass, green bushes. And, here, if it’s not green, it’s blue! The spa resort is a real temple of water and you can see how highly the town’s medicinal and mineral pools are regarded. It was the Romans that discovered the healing properties of the water, as they often spent time under jets of warm water in order to cure their ailments. The picturesque village of Puente Viesgo, which resembles a cross between somewhere in the Swiss Alps and the beautiful English countryside, is situated just 28km from the historic city of Santander, on the northern coast of Spain. Hotel Balneario Vichy Catalán, Caldes de Malavella, Girona The Hotel Balneario Vichy Catalan is located in the spa town of Caldes de Malavella, on the Costa Brava in Girona. Although in the northeast of Spain, it is set in a Neo-Mudéjar-style building, with dozens of fonts, fountains and Arabic-influenced arches wherever you look, giving it a sense of being somewhere in the Middle East. Vichy Catalán is one of Spain’s most famous mineral waters to drink, and so it’s not surprising that this resort is one of the most popular in the country. The thermal and balneotherapy centre offer clients the best in relaxation, treatments, hydrotherapy services and wellness sessions, and include installations such as the Finnish sauna, hot tub, steam room, fitness centre, table tennis hall, indoor and outdoor gardens, spa facilities and swimming pools.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

When a writer of the quality of Jimmy McGovern comes up with a new project, it is always “appointment to view television”, and after his big and only dud of the Aussie convict series Banished a couple of years ago, Broken (BBC 1, Tuesday) hits you right where it hurts. He's back to top form with a seering drama set in a northern town that pulls no punches, with superb performances from Anna Friel and Sean Bean. Friel and Bean play the main two characters in the opener, with Bean playing a likeable Catholic priest that is on the lookout for other people. I wish my uncaring priest would have been something like Bean's cleric all those decades ago, but his character has some unwelcome flashbacks to when he was a kid, and some pretty poor treatment from his teacher-priests at his school which certainly rang true to me. Your heart bled out for Friel's single mum-of-three character, as she loses her betting shop job because

Top Of His Game

she left a 60 quid I.O.U. in the till; can't get any dole money from an uncaring job centre because she was fired; and then when her mother dies, she doesn't tell anybody because she needed to claim her state pension. This was pure McGovern territory making you feel sympathetic about the mess that Friel's character had got herself into (rightly or wrongly) and a system that doesn't seem to care. I can't wait to see how Broken develops with further characters and plots being added. Drama done the McGovern way is sometimes not easy to watch, but is still engrossing, and echoes the old days of the social conscience of The Wednesday Play back in sixties. Long may this continue, whatever your political views may be, and I now forgive Jimmy for the awful Banished! Not every top US show goes to subscription television, and Channel Four and its family of services are continuing to act as a bulwark against Sky and their

cronies, with offerings like Homeland, The Good Fight (which sadly finished season one last night), Fargo (which started series three on Wednesday) and now we have The Handmaid's Tale. Like Broken, The Handmaid's Tale is tough stuff for a primetime slot, but good on Channel Four for putting it there, with this adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel about a dictatorship that has pushed out the US government and is behaving like the Nazis on a variety of fronts. This has become a massive hit on the Hulu streaming service in the States, and the timing with political events there is amazing, considering the show was commissioned nearly two years ago. Elisabeth Moss (known for top performances as Peggy in Mad Men, and the soon-to return Top of the Lake) is outstanding as Offred, who is forced to live as a concubine as society tries to cope with a massive crisis involving fertility. You do have to have your wits about you in a series of flashbacks mixed in with the

present, as The Handmaid's Tale takes you to some sinister and dark places with not much optimism for the future. I've never read the book, so I hope that we get some kind of fightback from Offred, but after a slow build up at the start, I couldn't wait for the next episode as the final credits rolled. Both The Handmaid's Tale and Broken show how good TV drama is these days on both sides of the pond, and I just don't get the view often trotted out that TV was so much better

decades ago. It wasn't but you have to carefully search through the channels and streaming services to get the gems, of which there are plenty. White Gold is a new BBC 2 comedy series from one of the co-creators of the very funny Inbetweeners, Damon Beesley. Hey it's even got two of that show's stars Joe Thomas and James Buckley joined by Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick (yes..I was a fan of this US show!) in this retro early-eighties tale of double-glazing salesmen.

Westwick's character indulges in direct to camera conversations like Michael Caine and Jude Law in the various versions of Alfie, whilst there's a thumpingly good eighties pop soundtrack. I like the verve and the atmosphere, but there's a key problem. I've seen a lot of the gags and routines done better before in a show called........The Inbetweeners! Have said that, I'm sure White Gold will find an audience, and it doesn't need canned laughter for you to raise a titter.

Adrian Lester and John Simm to star in Trauma ITV and Tall Story Pictures today announced casting for Trauma, an original drama written by multi award-winning playwright and dramatist, Mike Bartlett and directed by Marc Evans . Adrian Lester will star as family man Jon Allerton, a well-educated, confident and high achieving trauma surgeon. John Simm stars as Dan Bowker, a factory manager struggling to cope as his life unravels around him. Trauma also stars Rowena King who plays Lisa Allerton, a successful psychiatrist, wife of Jon and mother of their 18-year-old daughter Alana, played by Jade Anouka. Lyndsey Marshal stars as Susie Bowker, Dan’s hard-working wife and mother of his three children, Alex, Catherine and Mark. The three-part psychological thriller centres on the lives of two fathers, Dan and Jon, whose lives collide when Dan’s 15 year-old son Alex is stabbed and tragically dies in the trauma department attended by highachieving consultant Allerton. Devastated, heartbroken and pushed to the edge, Dan believes Jon is responsible for Alex’s death. As he

strives for justice, Dan begins to unpick the very fabric of Jon's life as his own unravels in the wake of Alex’s killing. Trauma is an intricate, fastpaced thriller that questions what makes a man good and explores what happens when the very institutions established to protect us and those who represent them, let us down. Producer, Catherine Oldfield, who developed the show with Mike Bartlett, said, "We are delighted to have such a fantastic cast. ” Mike Bartlett added, “I wrote Trauma knowing we needed, and hoping we'd get, hugely talented actors for the roles. But this cast has exceeded expectations.

The series begins filming in June 2017 in and around London.

BBC Two confirms Charlie Brooker's 2017 Wipe

BBC Two has commissioned Charlie Brooker's 2017 Wipe AND an entire series of Philomena Cunk. Cunk on Britain will see Philomena exploring everything from Britain's battles and medieval monarchs to Thatcher, Britpop and Brexit. "In 2017, Britain stands at a fork in its crossroads, so what better way to find out where we might be heading than looking behind us, into history (which apparently is a sort of 'rear view mirror' for time)," she said. "I'll be travelling the length and width of the country talking to experts and standing in front of old buildings saying things into the camera, as I try to discover what made Ancient Britain the Modern Britain it is today." Charlie Brooker said of Wipe: "It seems like only yesterday we were making 2016 Wipe, but apparently it

wasn't. "As ever, 2017 Wipe will compile the best and worst of the year into one easilydigestible jam-packed hour. It's a tradition now. A bit like the Hootenanny, but with less singing and more sarcasm." Also heading to BBC Two is Frankie Boyle's New World Order, which sees Frankie hosting a weekly discussion on political and cultural issues. Meanwhile, Tracey Ullman will be back on BBC One with a half-hour special in the aftermath of the election with Tracey Breaks The News, which will see her tackling Theresa May for the first time. Over on BBC Three, Luisa Omielan has secured her first BBC series Politics For Bitches, where she will tackle different political topics, breaking them down for the audience.

ADVICE: Joya wanted to know how to check whether she had the correct update installed to help protect against ransomware.

Q

HI Richard, I was hoping you might write about the new ransomware attack this week......As you know, I have a HP laptop purchased from yourself and running windows 7. I looked on Microsoft support before installing an upgrade marked as important and there was 'an important message’ displayed that if you were running Windows 7 then it was recommended that you download & install Microsoft Security Bulletin MS17-010 as a patch. This linked to the Microsoft Upgrade catalogue where I could not see anything about Windows 7 or this patch as all the upgrades had KB....... numbers. Therefore, I have done nothing except kept normal updates current for Windows 7.Can you advise? Many thanks Joya

A

Hi Joya, yes this is indeed the update that you need to have installed to protect against the type of ransomware attack seen recently in the press. You can check if its installed in Windows 7, 8 and 10 by reviewing the Windows Update History, alternatively you can just download and install the update, if its already installed you won’t cause any hard by re-installing it. You can find this update and its download options at the following address…

Swedish Success

Sweden’s Alex Noren carded a brilliant course record 10-under-par 62 to win the 2017 BMW PGA Championship by two strokes from Italy’s Francesco Molinari on an extraordinary Sunday at Wentworth. The Swede's stunning effort set a clubhouse target of 11-under 277, which he then spent more than two and half hours watching the on-course leaders fail to match! The 34-year-old holed eight birdies and an eagle to finish on 11 under, with Italy's Francesco Molinari moving up to second after a four-under 68. Sweden's Henrik Stenson (68), Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts (65) and Japan's Hideto Tanihara (68) were two back. England's Graeme Storm (68) was the top home nations player on seven under. He was joined by Ireland's Shane Lowry and Australia's Andrew Dodt, who jointly led overnight with Branden Grace but finished with a one-over 73. South African Grace trailed Noren by two shots with seven holes remaining but his challenge effectively ended with a double bogey on the 11th after he failed to hack his ball out of a ditch and was then forced to take a penalty drop. World number 13 Noren, who began 10 pairings ahead of the final group, told Sky Sports: "It feels amazing. I've been in the players' lounge for the last two hours. I was so nervous. It finally went my way." He was seven shots off the lead following a double-bogey on the last hole on Saturday, but made it to the turn in 31 and picked up further birdies on the 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th. Noren then capped off a brilliant display with an eagle at the last after his five-iron approach from 204 yards finished just four feet from the pin. "I've been envious of the champions of the past," added the Swede, who won £894,000. "I looked at the score a lot at the 12th and 13th holes - I didn't have a clue what I was going to shoot."

Though they may be very close to the same surface, the fringe and the green are two very different places, writes JOHN FARMER. This is especially true when you begin talking about the rules that apply to each location. Specifically, the rules that apply to what you can and cannot do when your ball is on the green or on the fringe. Fixing a ball mark just seems like it is always the right thing to do. After all, we have all suffered the consequences of playing on greens where people seem to always forget to fix their ball marks. They leave nasty scars that can take weeks to heal. However, before you bend down to fix a ball mark, you need to make sure that you are doing it in a legal fashion. If your ball is not yet on the green, you are not allowed to fix any ball mark or pitch mark that is anywhere other than on the green. For example, if you end up on the fringe and there is a ball mark on the fringe that is in your line, you may not fix it. However, if the ball mark is on the green, then you are entitled to fix it. In fact, any ball mark that is on the green can always be fixed. But, be very careful, you have to make sure that the mark is indeed a ball mark. As per rule 16-1c, the only other damage that you can fix is damage from an old hole plug. If the damage is caused by anything else, like spikes, a slammed club, or just a random scar, you may not attempt to repair it until you have finished the hole. Ball marks off the putting surface may be fixed before the completion of the hole, but only after your ball has made it to the green. So, if you land your approach shot in the fringe and your ball ends up right behind your ball mark, don’t touch it! Hit your chip shot and then, only after your ball has come to rest on the green, should you go back and fix the ball mark in the fringe. If you do violate this rule, the penalty is two strokes. Quite a hefty consequence for a common courtesy! Another big difference between your ball lying in the fringe or on the green is whether or not you can mark your ball. On the green, you may mark and clean your ball at any time. On the fringe, however, you may only mark your ball if you are requested to do so by an opponent. Rule 22-2 states that, if you are off the green, you cannot just lift your ball because you think it is in someone’s way, you must be requested to do so. And, if you are asked to lift your ball, you may not clean it. You must lift it and replace it exactly as it lay prior to being marked. If you lift your ball when it lies off the putting surface without the action being requested by another player, your penalty is one stroke in accordance with rule 18-2a. Now, once your ball is marked, you may think that the rulings stop, but they don’t. In fact, it actually gets a little more complicated. I’ll do my best to simplify the many different scenarios and decisions that involve ball markers. Basically, your ball marker may be intentionally moved only if it is in the line of another player and they request for it to be moved. Accidental movement of your ball marker is without penalty if the movement is a result of the moving of loose impediments or in the act of measuring your ball. Also, if your ball marker is moved during the act of marking the ball, it is without penalty. This is important because tapping down your ball marker with your putter is considered to be part of the act of marking. So, if you tap down your marker and it moves or sticks to your putter, you are not subject to penalty. However, if your marker moves in any of these situations, it must be returned to its original location. If a player replaces his ball without relocating his marker to the original spot and then plays from an incorrect position, he is subject to penalty under rule 20-7.If the marker is moved outside of one of the given exceptions, he is subject to penalty under rule 20-1 or 18-2 depending on the cause of the motion. Marking your ball seems like a simple act, but don’t let your guard down just because your ball is in your pocket. Although the situations become complicated and difficult to interpret, moving your marker can result in a costly penalty. If you want to have some fun, you can begin to read some of the crazy rulings and decisions that apply to ball markers. You may be surprised how easy it can be to break the rules when you’re on or around the green!

All To Play For

CD THADER 1 PAIPORTA CF 1

The first leg of this Preferente semi-final clash saw a cracking thousandplus attendence at the Rojales stadium last Saturday evening, with the visitors probably content to take the tie all-square into the second leg this Sunday afternoon with a 6.00 pm kick-off. That was doubly so when they played the last 25 minutes of the match after Paiporta had a player sent off for a second yellow card. The winners of the tie will take on the victors of the match-up between Beniganim and Onda, which also saw the

first leg finish one-all. Thader created more chances to win the first leg on Saturday, and come this Sunday it will finally be seen how much they will live to regret those squandered opportunities. Benja silenced the locals when he put Paiporta ahead in the 17th minute, after Dani Lucas had a good early chance to put Thader ahead. A good shout for a Thader penalty on the halfhour mark was turned down by referee Jordan Jorqués, and Arias came close to levelling matters before the interval. The home fans had

something to cheer about when Dani Lucas put Thader back on level terms after an hour, and then after Cano was sent off for a second caution six minutes later, it seemed that it was Thader’s match to win. Paiporta’s defence held up well as they wanted to keep the priceless draw in the bag, and so it was despite good efforts from Dani Lucas and Adrian. Logically Paiporta go in as favourites this Sunday, but based on this first meeting, it promises to be a tight return affair at the Valencia Province.

Columbian cyclist Johnatan Cañaveral won the La Vuelta de Alicante, which returned last weekend after a ten year break. Over 20 teams took part in the three day event, which showcased possible cycling

stars of the future. Murcia’s Fran García Rus won the final day stage that started and finished in Alicante City on Sunday, and did so in dramatic fashion after snatching the stage victory by beating Russian

Arseny Nikiforov in a sprint finish to the line. The previous day saw the competitors set off in the stage between Rojales (pictured below) to Ibi, after the action started in Orihuela on the Friday.

Tug’s Double Tug Wilson in the RS Quba Kiwi was the winner of the latest two races for the SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) held last month. The two Sailfish 18’s were first away for the morning race, followed ten minutes later by one two man and five single handed dinghies for the planned four lap race. Due to the wind conditions the pace was slow and unexciting so the Race Officer shortened the race to three laps. The wind

was up to nine knots by the start of the second race in the afternoon, and gradually increased to 12 knots, which produced the excitement missing in the first race. The finish was difficult, requiring a tack to finish up-wind. The RS Quba Kiwi got it wrong and hit the finish mark requiring a 360° penalty and re-finish After the handicaps were applied, the RS Quba Kiwi with Tug Wilson at the helm was found to have won both races despite the mishap at the finish of the second c o n test!

Torrevieja Cricket Club crumbled to a comprehensive seven wicket defeat at the hands of Sporting Alfas last weekend to get maximum points in the latest in the Eastern and Central Cricket League fixture. The one-sided affair began when Alfas won the toss and put home side Torrevieja into bat. Ciaran

Guichard went early but after 18 overs, Torry were at a respectable 87 for 2. The middle order then folded as three wickets fell on 87, with Torrevieja dismissed for just 104, with 8 wickets tumbling for just 17 runs! Kieran Perman for Alfas took 6 for 34 in his 5 over spell. After losing an early wicket, Jack Perman stayed

solid and ended with 80 not out. Alfas did lose a couple more wickets but reached their target in just 15 overs to inflict the expected defeat in double-quick time. Alfas took 20 points, and Torry just 3 points. Torrevieja's next home match is on Saturday June 17th against La Manga.

Barca’s Consolation

Valverde’s Challenge

Costly Misses

ELCHE 1 REUS 1

BARCELONA 3 ALAVES 1 Lionel Messi was inspired as Barcelona beat Alaves to secure the Copa del Rey for the third year running on Saturday. It gave coach Luis Enrique a winning send-off in his final match after three years in charge at the Nou Camp. Ibai Gomez hit the post for Alaves before Messi scored his 54th goal of the season with a 20-yard curler. Theo Hernandez bent in a free-kick to equalise, but Neymar turned in from close range and then Messi played in Paco Alcacer right on half-time. It has been a disappointing season for Barcelona, who finished runners-up to Real Madrid in La Liga and were eliminated from the Champions League by Juventus in the quarter-finals. They did at least restore some pride with victory over last season's second division champions in what was the final match to be played at Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Taxing Times

Barcelona’s President Josep Maria Bartomeu (pictured) has confirmed the unsurprising news that Ernesto Valverde will be their new coach for the 2017-18 season. The 53-year-old stepped down after four seasons in a second spell at Athletic Bilbao last week and was widely expected to take over from retiring coach Luis Enrique this summer. Barca had promised an announcement after the Copa del Rey final and a statement on Monday confirmed Valverde as the new coach on a two-year deal sanctioned by the board. "I have spoken personally with Ernesto Valverde and I told him of our decision," said Maria Bartomeu. "He said he is very excited and very happy, that it's a great challenge to come in as head coach of Barca.” "There is time to talk about why we chose him. We know he has ability, his knowledge and his experience”. "He loves youth football and he has a special style, similar to what we do at Barca. He has philosophy similar to Barca's and trains the way we like to train." Luis Enrique's three-year tenure yielded nine trophies, including a third successive Copa as Barca beat Alaves 3-1 at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday night (see left). The Asturian announced earlier this year that he would not be renewing his contract and Barca began to look at a number of candidates. Valverde, twice considered in the past, topped a list that also included Jorge Sampaoli, Ronald Koeman and Luis Enrique's assistant, Juan Carlos Unzue. Born in Extremadura, Valverde spent two years at Barca as a player under Johan Cruyff between 1988 and 1990. As a coach, he won the Spanish Supercopa at Athletic - by beating Barca in 2015 - as well as three Greek titles and two cups with Olympiacos, while he also led Espanyol to a UEFA Cup final in 2007. Nicknamed El Txingurri (which means bee in Basque) in his playing days, Valverde has also coached Valencia and Villarreal.

Elche’s two year stay in the Segunda Division could well end this weekend, after the llicitanos failed to win a must-win clash with Reus on Sunday evening. Though some of the sides obliged them by losing, Alcorcon ripped up the form book to beat secondplaced Girona, and they are the last team in the safe zone, three points above Elche, with just six points remaining to be played for. The only meek consolation for the Ilicitanos was that they ended their run of defeats at six, but their inability to score once again proved to be a costly Achilles Heel in a match that should have bagged three priceless points for them. As it is, this Sunday’s trip to fifth-placed Cadiz could see Elche’s return to division 2B sealed after a 19 year absence, a far cry from the not so long ago Primera days under coach Fran Escriba. Pelayo(pictured at the top) looked the most dangerous of the Elche players on Sunday and had a number of chances to put his side in front both in the first half, and early in the second period, where Elche dominated possession, and Reus were happy to just counter-attack. It was one of those breakaways that saw Vítor Silva beat keeper Juan Carlos in the 72nd minute, but four minutes later, having been barely on the pitch for seconds, subsitute Sory Kaba scored with a great header to put Elche back in the hunt. It was always hands to the pump for Elche who bombarded Reus, with Pelayo appearing to be unlucky to have a potential winning goal disallowed for offside. That’s exactly what happens when relegation is pretty much all but a done deal.

Cool It Down De Gea Battle

Prosecutors are considering whether Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo should face charges over allegations by Spain's tax agency that he defrauded the authorities of 15 million euro between 2011 and 2014. Prosecutors said they have until the end of June to decide whether to charge the Real Madrid star, based on evidence from an investigation by tax officials. The alleged irregularities were mostly related to money that Ronaldo had in the Virgin Islands. Tax officials said Ronaldo adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra six million euro in 2014. Prosecutors said that if they decided to charge him, and if the Portugal captain was subsequently found guilty by a court, he would face a prison sentence of at least 15 months. However, it would be unlikely he would go to jail as a first-time offender under Spanish legal rules.

The Spanish soccer players' union has asked for an urgent meeting with La Liga bosses to ask that games in the summer months take place at night to avoid playing when temperatures are hottest. The La Liga Primera season finished a fortnight ago, but the Segunda division still has two weeks remaining and four playoff games. Play-off games in other divisions are also still to take place. "The time has come to see if the league is only committed to television operators or whether they also care about the health of those on the pitch and on the stands," Xavi Oliva, managing director of AFE, told reporters. Oliva said the organisation was also concerned about games at the start of next season in Spain's hottest, asking that the organisers set kick off times according to likely temperatures where games are taking place. The AFE has asked for the league and the Spanish soccer federation, the RFEF, to allow referees to stop play for water breaks, as occurred in the 2014 World Cup. "By doing this we can be sure that the footballers and other actors in the sport can do their job safely and that fans can enjoy the spectacle of football in the right conditions."

Manchester United hope to resist Real Madrid's attempts to sign goalkeeper David de Gea again this summer. De Gea, 26, was left out of United's Europa League final line-up last month in favour of Sergio Romero. United have noted reports in the Spanish media, which tend to be the prelude to a concerted effort to sign a player when a club knows negotiations are not going to be straightforward. However, the Old Trafford club feel they are in a better position to reject Real than they were two years ago. In August 2015, De Gea had just entered the final year of his contract. His current deal lasts until 2019 and he also has the option to extend for an additional season. Senior United sources also say De Gea has not asked for a move, or expressed any discontent with his present situation.

Bowls Finals

The 2017 Línea Directa Spanish National Bowls Championship finished last Saturday at the Quesada Bowls Club, with a fortnight of great bowling and a number of very close games and the finals certainly didn’t disappoint. The Ladies Singles was an all-Quesada affair, with Carol Broomfield playing club mate Jacqui Johnston (pictured with Men’s champion Brian Robertson). Broomfield struggled to play to her usual form while Johnston bowled consistently to become the 2017 champion. The final of the Men’s Singles was a high quality contest, with Mazarron’s Brian Robertson up against John Rimmer of Country Bowls. Rimmer started in top form building up a match winning 11-0 lead, however Robertson pegged back to trail by just 2 shots at 14-12. Rimmer then picked up a 4 on the next end. A single to Robertson was followed by a 2 to his opponent and the score stood at 20-14, with Rimmer only needing a single shot to claim the title. The last shot is quite often the hardest to get and so it proved with Brian Robertson winning the remaining 4 ends to take the title. In the Mixed Triples the San Miguel team of Noel Davis, Gail and Fred Willshire played against last year’s Champions, Grace, Robert and Graham Cathcart of Teide, Tenerife. The San Miguel trio were on top form and took the title after only 17 ends. The Mixed Pairs saw two non-local teams. Mother and son, Grace and Graham Cathcart of Teide taking on David Sewell and Jan Dando of Indalo. This final produce some superb bowling and with the Teide pairing needing 4 shots on the last end to force an extra end, Graham Cathcart killed the off the end. In the replayed leg Sewell put in a great bowl so that the 4 wasn’t possible as the Indalo pair took the Mixed Pairs title. The Ladies Pairs was once again a San Miguel/Quesada affair. Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield (last year’s losing finalists) were looking to go one better, while Gail Willshire and Lynn Greenland were attempting to retain the title for San Miguel, won last year by club mates Lin Miller and Chris Parsons. The game was very close and produced some great shots, but it was the Willshire-Greenland pair who took the trophy back to San Miguel. The Men’s Pairs had one of last year’s Champions, Paul Parkes, playing with new partner Pat Heaney representing the Emerald Isle, against the popular father and son pairing of Gary and Johnny Raby of San Miguel. All four played great bowls, with the game going down to the wire, but the Raby’s took the honours. Afterwards, National Director, Bob Donnelly, thanked all the sponsors, the co-ordinators, umpires, markers and scoreboard flippers. He gave special thanks to the Championship committee for their work before and during the event. Thanks also were given to both venues at Quesada and Greenlands who gave up their greens free of charge.

"Rookie" Alonso

McLaren Honda Andretti driver Fernando Alonso has been named as Rookie of the Year for the 2017 running of the Indianapolis 500 last weekend. Despite having been consigned to a 24th-place finish when engine failure stopped him on lap 180 of 200, the Spaniard beat the race's highest-finishing rookie Ed Jones to the honours. Jones took the chequered flag in third, finishing 0.528s off race winner Takuma Sato. The award was decided by a media vote, which is based evenly on four criteria - a) the driver's skill, b) sportsmanship, c) accessibility and conduct during the month, d) finishing position. Two-time Formula 1 champion Alonso qualified fifth for his Indy 500 debut and led 27 laps, and he was running seventh when his Honda engine failed. “The racing was fun,” Alonso said. “We were up there leading the race and on the red flag we were leading. It was a very nice surprise to come here with these big guys and be competitive.”

Valuable Reds

Manchester United is the most valuable football club in Europe, being worth about three billion euros, according to business services group KPMG. The Europa League winners top KPMG's analysis of top sides' "enterprise value", putting it ahead of La Liga's Real Madrid and Barcelona. The study analysed broadcasting rights, profitability, popularity, sporting potential and stadium ownership. In the study of 32 teams, Real are second behind United on 2.97 billion euro; Barcelona third on 2.76 billion euro, and Bayern Munich fourth on 2.44 billion euro. Andrea Sartori, KPMG's global head of sports and the report's author, said the overall value of the football industry had grown over the past year. "While this is partially explained by football's broadcasting boom, the internationalisation of the clubs' commercial operations, their investment into privatelyowned and modern facilities, and overall more sustainable management practices, are also key reasons for this growth," he said. Spain was the only country with two clubs reporting an "enterprise value" above two billion euros, namely Real Madrid and Barcelona. The report is based on financial and non-financial information from the 201415 and 2015-16 football seasons.

The Lions Land

The British and Irish Lions should not worry about their "difficult schedule", head coach Warren Gatland says. The 41-man squad arrived in Auckland on Wednesday, and were greeted at the airport by a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony. The tourists touched down after their 11,500-mile, two-day trip with the 41-strong squad and staff greeted by the haka before responding with the Welsh song 'Calon Lan' led by Wales hooker and choirmaster Ken Owens. Owens will not feature this weekend as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, but says he will be in contention for the matches next week against the Blues and Crusaders. "We have four choirmasters - one from each nation - and we decided it was the Welsh turn to sing today," Owens said. "The boys weren't too bad - a work in progress, but a good effort so far. "It's always a great welcome when we come to New Zealand. It's great to experience some of their culture and give some of ours back." Warren Gatland's side begin their 10-match Kiwi tour tomorrow against a Provincial Union XV in Whangerei. You can't dwell on it," Gatland said. "We know what a daunting challenge we face. Everyone is really up for it." After the opener in Whangarei and before the first New Zealand Test, they face the Blues in Auckland on June 7th and the Crusaders in Christchurch on June 10th. Then it's the Highlanders three days later in Dunedin, the Maori All Blacks on June 17th in Rotorua, and the Chiefs in Hamilton on June 20th. They also face the Hurricanes in Wellington on June 27th before the second and third clashes with the All Blacks in early July. Former All Blacks boss Graham Henry has described the schedule as "suicidal". "I've mentioned how difficult the schedule was for 12 months," Warren Gatland said. "So it's a bit ironic people are talking about it now." "You can't change it, so if you let those sorts of things worry you it is going to influence the team. But those tough games will give us nice preparation in terms of getting us ready for the Test series." The Lions will hold a final training session on today before tomorrow's tour opener. The Lions' one and only series victory against the All Blacks came in 1971 but Warren Gatland, who is from New Zealand, will be hoping he can secure a historic second series win. Gatland was head coach in 2013 when the Lions beat Australia 2-1 to claim a first series win in 16 years. The Lions' task could not be harder this time around however with the Rugby World Cup champions welcoming Gatland's touring party. In 2005 the All Blacks, inspired by a mercurial Dan Carter, thrashed the Lions 3-0 to inflict a humiliating whitewash on Sir Clive Woodward's side and the bookies have the hosts as big favourites to see off the tourists again this year. The Lions are widely thought to have the strongest squad in recent memory, but despite the talent at Warren Gatland's disposal, the tourists are 7/2 to beat the All Blacks and secure a historic series win

MAVE’S HAPPY

Spain’s Maverick Vinales says victory at this weekend’s Moto GP in Mugello, Italy is 'crucial' in his bid to win the MotoGP World Championship. Vinales returned to lead the title race after claiming his third win of the season at Le Mans. The 22-year-old holds an advantage of 17 points over Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa heading into the sixth round of the championship and Vinales says he’s feeling confident of his chances on the Movistar Yamaha bike.

SAM’S BACK

Sam Warburton will captain the British and Irish Lions in their opening match of their New Zealand tour against the Provincial Barbarians tomorrow. The flanker will play his first game since suffering a knee injury in April, lining up in an all-Welsh back-row. The Scottish trio of Greig Laidlaw, Tommy Seymour and Stuart Hogg all start, as does Kyle Sinckler, who has yet to start a Test for England. There’s more on the Lions on page 47.

BALE SWEATS IT OUT

Real Madrid and Juventus go head to head at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff this Saturday in what could be an historic Champions League final (kick-off 8.45 pm), but will it be a happy return to Wales for the country's footballing talisman, Gareth Bale? Will he even play on his home turf? Real coach Zinedine Zidane faces a huge call over whether to start Isco or Gareth Bale. The Welshman seems a logical pick considering he will want to impress on home soil, but the 27-year-old has been dogged by injuries this season - the latest a calf problem - with Isco performing admirably in his absence. Real centre-back Pepe looks set to miss out with broken ribs, meaning Raphael Varane will likely continue alongside Sergio Ramos. Zidane's La Liga title winners will become the first ever team to defend the Champions League trophy if they can find a way past Juventus in Wales - but the Italian giants will be no pushovers. Massimiliano Allegri's side successfully defended the Serie A title this term despite losing a number of key players last season, and boast a mean defence with Italian icon Gianluigi Buffon captaining the side. The legendary 39-year-old goalkeeper has yet to win the competition despite a career full of honours, and must keep the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo at bay to add the famous trophy to his glittering collection. Real centre-back Pepe looks set to miss out with broken ribs, meaning Raphael Varane will likely continue alongside Sergio Ramos.

FAVOURITE FRANKIE Tomorrow's 2017 Derby at Epsom (start time 5.30 pm, live on ITV) will be the richest race ever staged in Britain after two horses were added as late entries at a cost of £85,000 each. The addition of Permian, who was successful in the Dante Stakes at York, and last week's Goodwood winner Khalidi, means the total purse for the Classic will be £1.625m. The John Gosden-trained Cracksman (to be ridden by Frankie Dettori, pictured winning on Golden Horn in 2015) is the favourite, with Cracksman beating Permain in April's Derby Trial. Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs, commented: “The two supplementary entries, along with the 18 other entries going forward, suggest that we will have a higher than average number of runners for this year’s Investec Derby on Saturday. “The Classic has an open look and certainly there are not many among the potential runners that you can rule out.” Meanwhile the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is to bar inexperienced apprentice jockey Gina Mangan from riding rank outsider Diore Lia . Mangan has only ever ridden one winner - Roscommon in 2009. Prize money was to be donated to Great Ormond Street's children's hospital. The BHA said it had "a responsibility to place the welfare of our participants, equine and human, first".
