rogress on upgrading the N-332 to a dual carriageway in Torrevieja is being held up by the Valencian regional government not having produced a good-enough plan for the development, according to the national government in Madrid. They say that despite the call for changes, they've heard nothing back from the administration for five months. The Public Works Ministry has sent a letter to Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón stating that no budgets can be allocated for the project until the Valencian administration produces a viable plan. Back at the start of April, The Courier reported the concerns from Madrid, and that Dolón wanted to "unblock the paralysed proj-

ect" The Ministry has stated that they have written to the Valencian leadership, adding that there are what they describe as "deficiencies" in their proposals, which were made public months ago. They say that a dozen points needed to be

addressed including land and environmental issues, yet five months on, they say that they have not received any amendments from Valencia. Last autumn Dolón, said that the process to approve the project would start “soon”, and the work would

be done as “quickly as possible”. The previous Torrevieja mayor, Eduardo Dolón, announced in January 2015 that the 32 million euro project would be tendered "soon", but nothing came after that statement, some five months before the local elections.

SEEING THE LIGHT

S

an Javier council has got the unanimous backing of all political parties over the specifications for a complete upgrading of the area’s street lighting, with the proj-

ect being tendered at 4.7 million euro. Old lights will be replaced by energy saving LED bulbs leading to an annual saving on electric bills of around

400 thousand euro, according to public services councillor Maria Dolores Ruiz. The councillor said that the new lights would also reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases as well as cutting down on light pollution within the municipality. San Javier mayor, José Miguel Luengo, said that once all the lights had been replaced, the positive environmental impact would be similar to that of planting 20 thousand trees. The project is seen as being one of the most ambitious in recent years in the

Murcia region to improve energy efficiency and to have a positive effect on the environment, with the winning contractor expected to do all the work within a year. The San Javier municipality has been divided into three areas for the tender, namely La Manga; Santiago de la Ribera; and San Javier plus the remaining communities. Over three thousand lights will be replaced across the whole muncipality, with new brackets and poles also being installed where needed.

Two men, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil for a string burglaries on properties in the Orihuela Costa. The operation from the Guardia in Pilar de la Horadada saw the thieves detained in Torrevieja after one of them was driving in his colleague's car without insurance. with the Guardia discovering stolen items in the vehicle, as well as implements used to break into houses. The duo, aged 49 and 47, were of Spanish and Algerian nationality, with the Guardia saying that they carried out at least five robberies with further investigations pending. An operation was launched lost month, with reports of a spate of house break-ins. Most of the burglaries were carried out as the men cased a potential target and then waited for the home owners to leave before breaking in, though on one occasion they struck at night when the occupants were tucked up in bed. The men had been spotted on CCTV footage, with one of them immediately recognised by the Guardia team, due to having a criminal record. One piece of video showed the robbers waiting patiently for the residents to leave the building before they broke in through a window. That yielded some cash and credit cards, with the crooks then heading off to an ATM to withdraw around three thousand euros in cash. Several thousand pounds had previously been attempted to be taken with other cards from burglaries. The duo have been charged with robbery, as well as the 49-year-old Algerian facing the bonus charge of driving without insurance. The stolen goods that have been recovered by the Guardia have been returned to their owners.

Murcia’s Superior court has officially closed the door on the ill-fated plans to create the Paramount Theme Park in the region at Alhama de Murcia, with the land set to be returned to agricultural use. The court’s litigation department acted on a request from the Ecologistas en Acción group. who wanted the official scrapping of the special plan for the project. The environmentalists said that the theme park would have “invaded” the important lands of the Carrascoy and El Valle regional park. In 2012, a foundation stone was laid in a ceremony at Alhama by the thenMurcia President Ramón Luis Valcárcel, followed by a year-long delay before the doomed project was tendered by the Premursa company. The process then became mired in rows over funding and licenses, despite a 52 million euro award to the Ferrovial com-

pany in the autumn of 2013. That tender floundered due to a lack of money in the Premurasa coffers to pay for it. A begging bowl was then waved in front of potential European investors by Premursa company, who failed to get anything, amidst claims that the Madrid government was also bidding in 2014 to get European grants to bring the Paramount project back to life. Opening date projections came and went and Premursa’s President Jesus Samper died in December 2015, with Premursa in serious financial trouble. The project has yet to be officially cancelled, but the court decision is another symbolic nail in the Paramount coffin, which at least produced a colourful virtual reality display three years ago of what the park would have looked like, if it ever actually opened.

Through The Roof Almost 1.3 million passengers used Alicante-Elche airport in May, which is a rise of over 13 percent on the same month last year. It means the facility is well on course for another record-breaking year in what is the 50th anniversary of the airport. The cumulative figure for 2017 shows passenger numbers at nearly 4.8 million, up by just over 14 percent on 2016. A total of 12.3 million people used the airport last year, some 16.7 percent more than in 2015, which in itself was a record. British passengers accounted for over 45 percent of travellers using Alicante-Elche last month at over 591 thousand, with the next largest foreign contingent standing at just 90 thousand for the Netherlands.

A drunk driver chose the wrong place to show he was over the limit, as he crashed into the wall of a car park belonging to the Orihuela local police, before asking stunned officers whether they had any spare rooms he could stay the night in. The intoxicated man was found be to three times over the limit when he hit the wall of the parking lot at the police HQ in the village of Correntías Medias on Sunday evening. Posting on social media, the Orihuela local police made the point that they did have rooms for the man to stay, which had bars in them.

Do Not Disturb

Rojales council has asked residents not to touch the nests of migratory birds that have appeared around the area in recent weeks. Destruction of the nests used by swallows and swifts can attract a fine of up to 200 thousand euros, according to the council. They say the birds are good news for the area since they can gobble up to 850 flies and mosquitoes a day during the spring and summer seasons.

Repeat Tragedy

A 32-year old son of a retired police officer, Alejandro Jaén, was killed by a drunk driver on Sunday morning on the N332 in Oliva in Alicante Province. The incident happened just weeks after three triathletes from Jávea lost their lives and two more were injured, when they were knocked down in the same area, also on a Sunday morning. A 25-year-old Dutch

national who lives in Ondara and was behind the wheel of a BMW car, fled the scene, but was caught shortly afterwards by the Guardia Civil and taken for questioning in Gandia. He subsequently tested positive for alcohol and drugs, with a mixture of cocaine, cannabis, and amphetamines in his bloodstream. The two cyclists were hit by the Dutch driver at around 8.10 am. One escaped unhurt, but

Alejandro Jaén was seriously injured and died minutes after the crash. Since the May incident in Oliva, cyclists from around Spain have held demonstrations to call for action against drunken and drugged-up motorists, with ministers promising more testing of motorists for drink and drugs in the morning, as well as the possibility of reducing alcohol limits still further for certain categories of drivers.

Protective Postie

A Torrevieja postman has been given a one year prison sentence and fined 900 euro for not doing his job by holding onto over 200 letters and parcels over a three year period. The sentence was handed down by the Alicante

Provincial Court in Elche, with the unnamed postman mainly hoarding letters from public bodies like banks and electricity companies in his work locker. He also didn't follow the rules in getting signatures for certified mail,

Summer Sizzler

The summer of 2017 could be hotter than normal with experts predicting that temperatures might be above the normal levels for the entire season, after a relatively non-sweltering summer last year.

The state meteorological agency AEMET says this summer has a 50 percent chance of being much warmer than average, and they say that rainfall figures will be around average for the time of year.

The court also handed out a suspended sentence of three years in connection with the man being able to work in a public position, though it was not made clear what motivated him to behave in the way he did in keeping the mail.

Brit Hunted The Guardia Civil are searching for a British taxi driver, after a 42-year-old British woman was found knifed at a villa in the Pina de Campoamor area on Tuesday. He is said to have fled in a stolen Hyundai i10 car. The daughter of Nicola Houghton found her mother lying in a pool of blood with a large knife plunged into her lower back when she went into her villa on Avenida Caballos on the Lomas de Don Juan urbanisation at around 9.00 am. Ms Houghton, who lived in the property with fellow Briton David Grundy, 53, was rushed to Torrevieja Hospital and admitted to the intense care unit after undergoing emergency surgery. Yesterday, medics said that she was out of danger. The Guardia said that they were treating the incident as a case of domestic violence and have been searching for Mr.Grundy, who said to be a taxi driver by trade.

As The Courier went to press, he has still not been found, with the Guardia now raising their search for him

nationally, after their initial alert took in Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

On The Buses

Los Montesinos is bidding for money from the Valencian regional government to create new public bus services linking the town with Torrevieja and Orihuela. Montesinos mayor José Manuel Butrón Sánchez signed the proposal

document to be sent to Valencia, where the regional government announced last year that they are looking to create new bus concessions across the region. The town has currently only got one twice-weekly service to Torrevieja.

Pricey Benidorm

A night’s accommodation in Benidorm is now, on average, more expensive than a night in Rome, according to research based on data from the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization). When the average price of hotels across all of the different star categories was calculated, Benidorm was ranked slightly below the Italian capital in terms of

Better Rojales

190 thousand euro is to spent improving street lighting and pavements in Rojales thanks to a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. The six month work will be carried out on Calles Cortes Valencianas, Valentín Fuster, and Francisco Serrano in the town.

Dutch Dispute A row between a Dutch couple in Catral saw a 42year-old man arrested by the local police after he allegedly assaulted his 38-year-old wife and chased her out into the street. The local police stepped in to make an arrest on Saturday evening after they stopped a woman with blood pouring down her face running down the road. She was being pursued by her husband, who was then detained by the officers. The wife was treated at a local health centre, but subsequently did not want to press any charges against her partner, though a report has been filed to the courts anyway.

affordability. The average hotel price in the popular Costa Blanca resort has been shown to be higher than in the previously more expensive destinations of Rome, Mallorca and Sydney. The figures (in British pounds) show that a threestar stay in Benidorm now works out as £65 more expensive than a similar hotel in Sydney; £56 more

expensive than one in Mallorca; and £73 more expensive than a three-star hotel in Rome. Average hotel prices in Benidorm have shot up over the last two years according to the survey because of package tour operators buying up massive blocks of rooms after switching emphasis form trouble-torn areas like Egypt, Turkey, and Tunisia.

Double Rescue

Guardia Civil and local police officers came to the rescue of two young swimmers who got into difficulty at Torrevieja's Cala de los Trabajos last Thursday. The 18 and 20-year-old bathers were in trouble

because of the strong current and waves, with one of them able to reach the rocks before being assisted out of the water. The other male swimmer was thrown a lifebuoy by an officer, which helped him to reach safety.

Fag End Fear Four and a half billion cigarette butts are clogging up rivers, forests, beaches, streets and parks, and take between eight and 12 years to biodegrade, according to the Spanish Pneumology and Chest Surgery Society (SEPAR). This leads to environmental pollution which can cause smoking-related illnesses in non-smokers, since the filters contain a large part of the most harmful substances, according to SEPAR coordinator Dr José Ignacio de Granda. These substances leak out when the filters come into contact with water, causing 'a huge threat to biodiversity' and even contaminating the food supply chain, Dr de Granda says. A number of authorities have taken recent initiatives to try and reduce the number of butts that are dumped, including the introduction of special containers at Torrevieja's beaches.

Keep Them Closed Madrid is to stop men sitting with their legs wide open on public transport as it has declared war on “manspreading”. The city’s Municipal Transportation Company (EMT) plan on installing new signs in all its carriages and vehicles, which they hope will stop the personal space encroaching practise. EMT said the signs will “remind transport users to maintain civic responsibility and respect the personal space of everyone on board”. The sign shows an illustrated man spreading his legs wide apart on a metro seat with a giant red “X” indicating this is unacceptable. The accompanying text asks passengers to “respect the space of others”. The new poster will sit alongside others that edu-

cate passengers about appropriate behaviour when on public transport, prohibiting smoking, eating, drop-

ping litter and putting feet on seats. At this stage it is unclear whether or not a fine will be levied on offenders.

Fugitive Found

Knocked Down

An 88-year-old man was taken to Torrevieja Hospital on Monday lunchtime, after he was hit by a car when he was crossing a street in the centre of Torrevieja.

The elderly Spaniard was struck at around 1.15 pm on Calle Azorín and was treated on the scene by a doctor, before being transferred to hospital.

A British man has been arrested in Ibiza over the murder and dismembering of a woman in Thailand after her remains were found in a suitcase nearly three years ago. Shane Looker, 47, has been the subject of an inter-

national arrest warrant since he became the main suspect, after the young victim's body parts were found in November 2014. Authorities knew that he was hiding out in Ibiza, but could not find him until he took his car in for a service.

The Guardia Civil discovered the registration plate of his car, and detained him when the vehicle was taken in for a service. Looker was believed to have been involved in running a hotel on the holiday island.

Rental Push

The number of people hiring holiday accommodation in Spain has surpassed holiday bookings for the first time ever, according to a study by Exceltur, which is a group consisting of the country's leading tourist businesses.

The survey shows that the number of bed space available through shortterm self-catering rentals nearly doubled from 2015 to reach over 360 thousand beds in the country's largest cities. That figure was nearly 10 per cent higher than the bed avail-

ability offered by hotels. “In just four years, rental accommodation has gone over the number of hotel beds created during entire decades of tourist development,” said José Luis Zoreda, executive vice-president of Exceltur.

Pep's Plea

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola joined thousands of protesters in Barcelona on Sunday call for independence for the Catalunya region. The ex-Barcelona boss made a strong plea for voters to take part in an independence referendum scheduled for Sunday October 1st. "We will vote, even if the Spanish state doesn't want it," Guardiola told the crowd.

"There is no other way." Surveys suggest Catalan voters would narrowly reject independence, though most favour holding a referendum. Last Friday, the Catalunya president Carles Puigdemont announced the referendum vote for the autumn, in direct defiance of the Madrid government and contravening a ruling by Spain's Constitutional Court. Guardiola, who is revered

in Catalonia for his achievements at Barcelona FC, also demanded international help against "the abuses of an authoritarian state" at the rally. Local authorities say that about 30 thousand people attended, but a separatist source put the figure closer to 47 thousand. The latest polls suggest that most Catalans support the holding of a referendum similar to the one held by

Scotland in 2014 - the main difference being that the Scottish vote had the support of the British government. Polls indicate a tight race, with 48.5% of respondents opposing independence, and 44.3% in favour. In 2014, Catalunya held an illegal non-binding vote in which people overwhelmingly backed independence, but only on a 40 percent turnout.

The Happy Whistler

The Cantabile Ladies choir sung a range of songs spanning over three centuries at a recent concert at Torrevieja’s La Siesta church. Donations from a bucket collection afterwards were made to the MABS cancer support group. Cantabile is always on the look out for new members who are interested in performing a wide variety of songs across the area. Rehearsals will start again at La Siesta church in September on a Friday at 2.45 pm, with more details from Val Beange on 966 79 58 16 or email valcantabile@gmail.com.

It’s Greek To Them

A world whistling champion is to link up with the JB Brass Band for two concerts later this month, with proceeds from one of the evenings going to the special fund set up in aid of the victims of last month’s terror attack in Manchester. David Morris is a professional whistling artist, who performs as a soloist with orchestra, concert and brass bands. His roots lie in playing the cornet from the age of 13, and he subsequently he played principal cornet and became the British cornet champion. During the last couple of years, David’s whistling has been featured in the movie, The Counselor starring Brad Pitt, as well as two high profile UK TV adverts in the UK for the BMW Mini car and the TSB Bank. Not Two, But Three

The Deadwood Stage Company went all Greek recently with an ABBA show inspired by the popular Mamma Mia musical, which is set in the Greek islands. The production was staged at the Greek-themed Georgiou’s Café Bar on the Blue Lagoon urbanisation in Sam Miguel de Salinas, with plans in harness already for the next show. The theatre group, which was only formed last year, is after new members who can perform on stage, or work behind the scenes. More details from Vida on 966 774 127.

Generous residents of the Pinar de Campoverde area have succeeded in raising over six and a half thousand euro which will be enough to buy three defibrillators for the village, thanks to the efforts led by Jimmy and Clare McGill from the Rusty Nail pub. A special fundraiser took place at the Rusty Nail at the start of the month, and with the amount of money that has been raised, the initial target of funding two machines has been easily passed, enabling a third defibrillator to be bought. The money was handed over to Pilar de la Horadada council last week, who expressed their great appreciation at all the effort that was made, and the big sum that was raised. The machines will be located at the central health centre in Pinar, as well as the town hall, and the Polideportivo near to the Rio Seco. Classes on how to use the defibrillators are to be staged at the town hall, with a total of 45 people set to be trained. "A sincere thank you to the whole village", said Mr. McGill. "You should all be proud of yourselves. Well done!"

A Sea Of Blue

Terrace Boost

Local authorities from the Vega Baja region officially picked up their Blue Flag awards for 2017 on Monday in recognition of the high quality of their beaches. Representatives from Guardamar, Torrevieja, Oriheula, and Pilar de la Horadada travelled north to Altea’s Nautical Club to get their certificates from regional officials. The Valencian region has the highest number of blue flags in Spain, with Orihuela the leading municipality with nine awards.

There’s been a large increase in Santa Pola bars and restaurants asking for increased terrace space this summer, after more pedestrianised areas have been created in the town. The report in the Informacion newspaper says that the closure of Avenida González Vicén has spurred on business owners to ask for more umbrella and seating space. The council is set to earn 200 thousand euros in fees this year, as applications double those submitted in 2016.

Backlog Claim

Safer Beaches

Unions at Torrevieja Hospital have slammed increased waiting times in the casualty department because of a lack of treatment rooms. Hospital management says that a service is being provided according to guidelines. The unions claim that an area was shut off in May and was pledged to be reopened at times of peak demand. That never happened, resulting in a backlog of 28 patients on Monday. The area has been used for overflow in instances like flu outbreaks during the winter, and the unions said that doctors were unable to provide a proper emergency service because there was “nowhere for the patients to go”.

The lifeguard service for the Elche municipality beaches, including those in La Marina and Arenales de Sol, was launched last weekend, and will run until mid-September. Elche council has hired the Pilar de la Horadada-based Ambumar company on an emergency contract due to delays in sorting out the tender. Ambumar already provide a service on the Orihuela Costa as well as on Pilar’s beaches. The previous franchise holder DYA, who provided cover for a decade, did not meet the council’s required standards in the tender application earlier in the year, but most of their staff have joined Ambumar’s Elche opertaion.

SOFTER BREXIT LIKELY POST ELECTION By Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management In true form, the ending of Theresa May’s lastminute snap election ended in a rather unexpected hung parliament, with the Conservatives planning to team up with Northern Ireland’s DUP party to form a majority government.

Perhaps the best advice for British Expats who intend to stay in Spain would be to ensure you have got your Padron and Residencia in place which will surely strengthen your position as to your rights as a Spanish Resident regardless of Brexit.

The election marked shock losses for the Conservatives. Out of 650 seats, the Tories finished with 318 seats - eight short of the figure needed to win - with Labour on 262, the SNP on 35 and Liberal Democrats on 12.

A review of your financial position would be a sensible option in view of the above or if you would like advice on any of the issues you can contact me on

Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour was expected to stay the underdog throughout, but came through as a close second with huge waves of support from younger voters and those who had previously voted UKIP – which Conservatives had hoped would swing in their favour. May claims her new coalition government will bring ‘certainty’ to the UK in the upcoming months before Brexit, with talks set to go ahead on the 19th of June. But what will these unexpected results mean for expats? During their campaign, Theresa May was met with a huge backlash following her announcement that Conservatives planned to ditch the Triple Lock system for state pensions. The Triple Lock system was introduced in 2010 by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government. It is guaranteed to increase the state pension every year by the higher of inflation, average earnings or a minimum of 2.5%, with the aim of protecting pensioners from meaningless increases in the state pension - such as the 75p a week rise in 2000 and to make sure their income was not eroded by the gradual increase in the cost of living. The DUP stated in their manifesto that they would commit to the state pension triple lock and winter fuel payments, so many are split in their opinion over whether or not both parties will or won’t scrap the system. Experts have warned that pension and social care reforms are set to be left in limbo, despite being

richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com.

urgently needed. It is likely to be a ‘wait-and-see’ case. But one of the biggest buzz words of the entire snap election was Brexit. It made up a huge part of Theresa May’s “strong and stable” campaign, but with negotiations just around the corner – things are looking just as grey as it was before with a “soft Brexit” now on the cards.

I can also help you track lost pensions, including personal pensions or occupational pensions and schemes used to “contract out”. If you have lost touch with a pension scheme since moving to Spain we can contact them on your behalf to find out what your pension entitlement may be. For further information contact: Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management (International) Ltd M: 692 352 156 or E: richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com

Since Brexit was announced, the pound sterling has fallen against the dollar. Last year, the exchange rate of the pound dropped from 1.4 to 1.15 after the results of the referendum, with another drop after Theresa’s hung parliament was revealed – down 2% against the dollar and euro.

The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity.

Another question on most expat’s lips is whether they would be able to retain their EU citizenship. At present we aren’t entirely sure if this will be officially available until negotiations begin on the 19th of June, but chief Brexit representative Guy Verhofstadt said he hoped to convince European leaders to allow Britons to maintain certain rights if they apply for them on an individual basis.

My Dog Won’t Walk!

ARCHIE Archie is three-years-old and was rescued by the APAH charity when he was a little puppy aged four weeks. Now he’s in a foster home with a dog trainer, and is a lovely, well-behaved boy, who gets on well with his foster mum's dog. To arrange to meet Archie and to give him a forever home, then please call APAH on either 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

CHARLIE BROWN Charlie Brown is around a year old, and is a very friendly and busy little dog that loves children and other dogs. He is not very big weighing in at around seven kilos and loves going out for walks. He is very bouncy and can climb and jump so he needs a secure garden. He is very responsive comes to his name and is very clean in the home. For more about Charlie Brown call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

Is your dog becoming stubborn and refusing to walk, as well as looking totally disinterested in the prospect, or even teases you by walking out with you through the gate, and then just becomes as a solid as a statue?

walk “fun”. You need to find ways of making the walk “fun” for both of you.

There are many reasons dogs refuse to walk. Fearful dogs often balk at venturing into the world. Passive protest is one way they avoid scary things. Physical discomfort such as being too hot or too cold can trigger misbehaviour. Some dogs want the chance to stop and cool down.

1. Take a different route where there are new smells

Other dogs struggle with ice pellets and salt painfully trapped in their paws. Also, consider physical ailments. Orthopedic problems can cause pain. Young dogs are not immune. While rare, early onset hip dysplasia can affect puppies. Once all the usual suspects have been ruled out, carefully evaluate your training technique. Dogs, especially social butterflies, will misbehave to get attention. Some will even act out to get negative attention. Owners may think prodding and pulling is serving to hurry the dog along. Dogs see things differently. They got the owner’s attention and thus a reward. When owners repeatedly pull a treat out of their pocket to coax a dog along after it lies down, it creates the exact same problem. The dog learns that lying down brings attention and food treats.

GINO Gino is six months old and is a fox terrier cross who weighs just five kilos and won’t grow much bigger. He is house trained and had his puppy vaccinations. Gino is good with other dogs, cats and children. To meet him and to learn more, then please call Pets in Spain on 645 469 253. www.petsinspain.com

Instead, give rewards while the dog is walking nicely. Encourage the dog to follow you by using your voice and tapping your leg. When the dog follows, reward it with plenty of attention and treats. Continue to reward the dog every few steps, before it decides to lie down. With practice, you will instill new habits and use fewer treats over time. Dogs also tell your state of mind and whether you find the

She is now fully vaccinated, micro chipped and sterilised and is a gentle girl who loves to go for walk and likes to play with her kennel mate, Ron. Honey is a real sweetie, and if you want to know more, please contact the SAT kennels in Dolores on 966 710 047 or email info@satanimalrescue.com

PEGGY 18-month-old Peggy was rescued in a terrible condition after wandering in a village, having been hit by a car. She had to have her leg amputated and is now fully recovered, with three legs proving to be no disadvantage to her! She is quite a dominant dog and would do well to be with another dog of a similar size as she is happy in the company of another dog. For more on Peggy please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

Here are five things to remember and work on:-

2. Go out of the back or side door instead of the front door (if you can do so!) 3. Go out and then come right back in, then go out again 4. Try adding a jog or run in between walking 5. Keep him guessing what’s next You need to increase your dog's level of “wanting” to go on the dog walk. Stop along the way and practice your basic commands with a treat. Challenge your dog's mind. And always end the walk before he’s ready, even if that means only going for 10 minutes. At least for the initial re-training of the mindset, keep the walks short so you always leave him wanting more. This will change his mindset to anticipate the next walk and want to go. Second, keep in mind that this is a dog that is not saying, “I’m tired.” This is a dog that’s saying, “I’m bored. I want more fun.” The dog is rebelling the structure of the dog walk. Think about it. On the walk, the dog is asked to be calm, to stay with you or behind you, to go at a slower pace. This is structure, and that’s good. Rules, boundaries, and limitations! But finding the balance between that and fun is your challenge.

POPPET Seven-year-old Poppet is an adorable little girl in San Javier with an eye injury. She had an operation which saved her eye, but sadly it left her blind in her right eye, but this does not stop her. Poppet is such a gentle little girl who loves cuddles, and would probably be best suited in a home with no other dogs or young children. Seagate Wealth Management I want to invest but am worried it's a bit like gambling. How do I know I won't lose all my money? When interest rates were higher, many people were happy putting their savings away in savings accounts, to quietly grow in readiness for a rainy day, or that big purchase. But as we close in on a decade of low rates, with no sign that anything will change sometime soon, millions of people are looking for alternatives. However, for anyone who has not invested before, it can be an adjustment. When your money’s in a savings account, you know exactly how much you’ve got, and do not have to worry that you’ll check your balance one day and find you have less. However, in a sense there is a hidden danger with keeping money in cash at the moment. If it is sitting in a standard savings account, your money is unlikely to buy as much next year as it would buy this. Meanwhile, there are ways of investing that make it much safer than gambling could ever be. It is true that there is no guarantee that when you invest money its value will not fall. But when gambling, the odds are stacked against you: the house tends to win and all of your money can be wiped out in a minute. This is not the same when investing. The odds are stacked in your favour – in general markets tend to rise over time. It is hard to wipe out all of your money at once if you invest wisely, because good investing behaviour involves putting money in a range of things, which are very unlikely to all rise and fall in tandem. A sensible investor uses diversification to mean that they don't put all their eggs in one basket. You shouldn’t be investing all your money. You should have an amount of money still sitting in cash, which is easily available, to cover the unexpected.

Not Stopping

Five Guardia Civil officers were run over in Jaén province in Andalucia on Sunday morning by a driver who failed to stop at a checkpoint. The motorist left four officers with minor injuries and

put a fifth in hospital when he ploughed through them on the A-4 close to the town of Guarromán. He then went on to crash into another parked car, although the driver and passenger were unhurt, and into two Guardia

patrol cars. Officers arrested him and a passenger minutes later and found 13.5 kilos of hashish hidden in the lining of his car seats along with nearly two thousand euros in cash and four mobile phones.

Two skyscrapers could be gracing the Acequión beach area of Torrevieja if the council grants planning permission for the construction of the 82 metre towers. The promoters of the 100 million euro project, Baraka, want to use part of the structures, which would be situated between Avenida de Gregorio Marañón and the Doña Sinforosa park, for a three-star hotel.

Six Months On

Los Alcázares is be given four million euro for repairs to the area caused by the winter flooding. The regional Murcia government has asked the Madrid central government for resources for a 10-year-

year loan so that urgent work can be carried out in the area. A variety of infrastracture works will take place including roads, footpaths, sanitation, and stormwater gathering networks, in addition to

damage to sports facilities and local beaches. The slowness on getting the money through have been caused by delays in the State Budget being passed by Congress in Madrid.

Refugee Rescue Spain's maritime rescue service saved 54 migrants including two babies, trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in a smugglers' boat last weekend. A spokesman for the service says that the group, which included 13 women, was spotted by a cargo ship in waters east of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Cruz Roja says that seven of the migrants need-

ed to be taken to a hospital upon arrival at the port in Malaga around midnight on Saturday. Hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have attempted the dangerous

crossing to Europe in recent years, with hundreds perishing in the attempt.

Claims Pair Held Two British people have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Mallorca on suspicion of encouraging holidaymakers to make dishonest compensation claims. The move follows a spate of complaints by hotel owners in tourist areas, including the Costa Blanca, that tourists are being targeted in resorts with offers to get refunds on their holidays by making bogus claims over food poisoning. Groups like the Costa Blanca Hoteliers Association have been calling for action to be taken as their members are being left out of pocket, forcing the cost of accommodation to rise. The British pair are

believed to have been approaching tourists staying

in hotels in the Alcudia area of Mallorca.

Domestic Stabbing A 46-year-old Spanish woman was arrested early on Monday morning after her partner was found with stab wounds on a Torrevieja street. Guardia Civil officers swooped after a stabbed and drunk man was discovered lying on a pavement on Calle Alance in the La Siesta-El Chaparral area of the city. Reports suggested that the couple were shouting at each other after midnight on Monday morning, and the

woman stabbed her partner, also a Spanish national, in the abdomen, with blood found inside their home, as well as outside.

He was taken to Torrevieja Hospital and was subsequently out of danger, whilst a judge refused the woman bail at a court appearance.

Sweet Potato Saag Aloo

Ingredients

Method

1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 20g fresh root ginger, grated 1 tbsp spice mix (see below) or mildcurry powder 2 sweet potatoes, diced 1 tomato, diced 300ml vegetable stock 150–200g bag of baby spinach, picked over and thoroughly washed squeeze of lemon juice sea salt and black pepper Spice mix 1 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds ½ tsp ground turmeric To serve a few green chillies, sliced a few sprigs of coriander

If making the spice mix, toast the whole spices lightly in a frying pan, then grind them to a powder. Mix with the turmeric. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish or a deep frying pan. Add the onion and cook it quite briskly until it’s softened and very lightly browned. Add the garlic, ginger and the spice mix or curry powder and stir until combined. Add the sweet potatoes to the pan and stir to coat them with the garlic, ginger and spices, then add the tomato and the vegetable stock. Season with salt and pepper. Bring the stock to the boil, then turn down the heat, cover the pan and simmer very gently until the sweet potato is just cooked. This should take no longer than 10 minutes, but check regularly from 5 minutes as you don’t want the sweet potato to go mushy – it should still have a little bite to it. Loosen the sauce with a little more stock or water if necessary. Add the spinach to the pan and cover the pan again until the spinach has wilted down. Stir very carefully to combine without breaking up the sweet potatoes. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve garnished with green chillies and fresh coriander.

New baldness cause accidentally discovered by scientists could lead to hair loss treatment A new cause of baldness has been accidentally discovered by scientists in the US in a breakthrough that could help develop a way to regrow hair. The researchers were investigating the role played by anti-inflammatory immune cells called Tregs in skin health generally. They found a way to temporarily remove the Tregs from the skin of laboratory mice, who had been shaved to allow the effects to be observed. But the scientists then noticed something unexpected – the hair failed to grow back. Previously it was thought that stem cells cause hairs to regrow after they fall out, but the team discovered that this only happens if Tregs are present. One of the scientists, Professor Michael Rosenblum, an immunologist and dermatologist at University of California San Francisco, said: “Our hair follicles are constantly recycling. When a hair falls out, the whole hair follicle has to grow back. “This has been thought to be an entirely stem cell-depen-

dent process, but it turns out Tregs are essential. “If you knock out this one immune cell type, hair just doesn't grow. “It’s as if the skin stem cells and Tregs have co-evolved, so that the Tregs not only guard the stem cells against inflammation but also take part in their regenerative work. “The stem cells rely on the Tregs completely to know when it's time to start regenerating.”

The researcher believe that defects in Tregs could be responsible for the immune disease, alopecia areata, which causes hair to fall out in patches and possibly also play a part in other kinds of baldness. The same stem cells that regrow hair are also involved in healing damage to the skin, so Tregs may also be involved in this process. Tregs’ role – as previously understood – was mainly to

regulate the immune system, helping it tell what to attack and what to leave alone. When they malfunction it can lead to allergies to peanuts and other harmless substances or cause the immune system to attack the body. Professor Rosenblum and colleagues had previously showed that Tregs help the immune systems of baby mice learn which skin microbes are not harmful

and also that they secrete molecules that help heal wounds. They were investigating these effects further when they noticed that patches of shaved hair on the lab mice were not regrowing. “We thought, ‘Hmm, now that’s interesting,’” Professor Rosenblum said. “We realised we had to delve into this further.” Using sophisticated imaging techniques, the researchers were able to show that

Tregs gathered around follicle stem cells at the start of the process to regrow a hair. When Tregs were removed from the skin, this prevented the regrowth of hair – but only if this was done within three days of the hair being shaved. After this time, the hair would regrow normally despite the absence of Tregs. The cause of alopecia is poorly understood, but previous studies have showed genes associated with the condition are mostly related to Tregs. Boosting Treg function has been found to help. Professor Rosenblum suggested further research into Tregs’ role could lead to improved treatments for hair loss generally and better understanding of their role in wound healing. “We think of immune cells as coming into a tissue to fight infection, while stem cells are there to regenerate the tissue after it's damaged,” he said. “But what we found here is that stem cells and immune cells have to work together to make regeneration possible.”

Beta-blockers 'useless' for many heart attack patients?

"Many patients given beta blockers after a heart attack may not benefit from being on the drugs, suggesting they may be being overprescribed," The Guardian reports. Beta-blockers are drugs used to regulate the heart by making it beat more slowly and with less force. They are often used in people who have heart failure or are thought to be at risk of heart failure. A new study has collected data from England and Wales from more than 170,000 people who had a heart attack but did not have heart failure. The researchers wanted to see if

beta-blockers improved health outcomes in this set of patients. The study compared mortality rates between those who were prescribed beta blockers and those who weren't when they were discharged from hospital. Though there were fewer deaths one year later among people prescribed beta blockers (5% vs. 11%), the researchers concluded that beta blockers did not affect risk of death once other risk factors and medications were taken into consideration. UK medical guidelines recommend that all people who have had a heart attack

take beta blockers for at least one year. And those with heart failure are advised to continue treatment indefinitely. The recommendations for people without heart failure may be reviewed in future guideline updates. However, any future recommendations would need to consider not only this study but other clinical trial evidence. Beta blockers might still have benefits for patients, aside from mortality. If you have been prescribed beta-blockers you should not stop taking them without first talking to your GP.

Why Coffee can be good for your health Although coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, many health enthusiasts and natural health professionals consider it an unhealthy drink. Yes, coffee is known to worsen stomach problems in some people and may cause a few other minor ailments such as increased heart rate, nevertheless, there is overwhelming evidence that coffee protects the body against chronic liver and gall bladder diseases including cancer.

22% and offered protection against a chronic disease of the gall bladder called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis. One published Study in the Journal of Hepatology also found that drinking 2 or more cups of coffee every day reduced the risk of dying from Liver Cirrhosis. Many other studies have also shown irrefutable evidence favouring coffee. Coffee is also known to offer protection against Diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.

Researchers from Milan's Instituto di Rierche Farmacologiche found that drinking coffee lowers the risk of liver Cancer by 40%. Another study found that coffee reduced the risk of Liver Cirrhosis (a chronic liver disease) by

Cold water 'just as good as hot' for handwashing "Antibacterial handwash is NO better than soap – and cold water kills as many germs as hot, experts claim," says recent reports. These were the main findings of a study looking at

various methods of handwashing. But the researchers only tested for E.coli bacteria, a leading cause of food poisoning. And for safety reasons, they used a strain of

E.coli that isn't infectious. The study found using colder water (15C) was just as effective at getting rid of bacteria as using hot water (38C), and antibacterial soap was not significantly

more effective at removing bacteria than plain soap. It also found washing your hands for slightly longer – 30 seconds as opposed to 15 seconds – is more effective at getting rid of the bacteria. The researchers hope their study could be used by policymakers to inform handwashing guidelines.

But the study only compared two products, and also only looked at one organism, which doesn't cause infection in humans. Examining the effectiveness of a wider range of products against other types of infectious organisms, such as viruses and fungi, as well as other strains of

bacteria, would be required before we can safely say whether cold water is just as effective as hot. Perhaps the most useful piece of advice to come from the study is to wash your hands for 30 seconds if you want to protect yourself against food poisoning or infections like the flu.

Guide to Spain’s Hidden Gems and Places to Visit this Summer By Julie Day With such a diverse and interesting landscape, it’s no wonder that many people living in Spain don’t feel the need to travel abroad. We’ve got it all here: stunning beaches, paradise islands, medieval villages, bustling cosmopolitan cities, picturesque hills and valleys and great big mountains. Many of us have done the typical tourist destinations such as Ibiza, Barcelona, Magaluf (lived there for eight years), Madrid and Granada, but how many of us have really hit the road and explored this beautiful country? Well, this week’s guide may just give you some inspiration to pack up and head off the beaten track in search of something a little different. Interested? Brave enough? If the answer is yes, then read on. Júzcar – Andalucía Well, despite only having 200 inhabitants, this village has made somewhat of a name for itself, and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The reason why Júzcar is famous is because it is the setting of the Smurf Village in the Hollywood film “The Smurfs”. For this, all the houses and buildings in the vicinity had to be painted blue. A few months after the film crews had packed up and returned home, the Mayor and the inhabitants decided to maintain the paintedblue buildings rather than return them to their original white. A friend of mine recently visited Júzcar and commented that it was a fantastic day out.

Júzcar Canfranc – Aragón This is an ideal place for hikers, skiers and mountain-lovers alike. With over 300 routes for walking and just a stone’s throw from some of the country’s best and most popular ski resorts (Jaca and Formigal), this little village has so much more to offer the visitor. This is the location of the famous international train station of Canfranc, which was inaugurated in 1928 and stands at 1,194 m above sea level. Its splendid building has been awarded the title of ‘Property of Cultural Interest’.

La Costa de los Dinasaurios – Asturias Known as the Dinosaur Coast, this part of the Spanish coastline between Gijón and Ribadesella is characterized by an abundance of fossil remains and footprints of dinosaurs and other reptiles that were alive during the Jurassic period. Some of them are more than a metre in diameter and definitely a sight to see. A great place to visit for scientists, archaeologists and dinosaur fanatics! Liencres – Cantabria This place is just one of those magical delights in which beauty surrounds you, whichever direction you look in. At just 72m above sea level, and only a 15-minute drive from Santander, Liencres boasts 8km of stunning beaches, perfect for surfers. The Natural Park of las Dunas de Liencres is located here. Peratallada – Cataluña This is one of the best-conserved and well-maintained medieval villages of the region of Cataluña in northeast Spain. Located in the province of Gerona, strolling through the narrow, cobbled streets within the medieval walls is like taking a big step back in time. The castle and church have to be visited too. La Albufera – Comunidad Valenciana Situated only 10km south of Valencia, Spain’s third city, is the L’Albufera, a massive freshwater lake, which was declared a natural park in 1986. The L’Albufera expanse of water is one of the prime wetland habitats for birds in the east of the country, homing around 250 different species. It is located along the coast, next to one of that stretch of water’s prettiest beaches – El Saler – but it is cut off from the sea by a wooded sandbar and is surrounded by kilometres of rice fields from which a third of the country’s rice is produced. After taking a peaceful boat ride around the Albufera, it is almost obligatory to stop off at one of the many restaurants and enjoy a typical Valencian paella and ‘horchata’. Cáceres – Extremadura This city was voted the Gastronomy Capital in 2015 and was one of the top places to visit in Spain that year. Cáceres was also awarded the title of World Heritage Site in 1986 for its historic buildings, medieval walls, well-preserved Jewish quarter and exceptional architecture. Although Cáceres is not a large city, it offers plenty to the tourist, especially lovers of the outdoor, history, good food and excellent wine. Combarro – Galicia This is one of the most picturesque fishing villages of Rías Baixas region of Galicia. It is located just 6km from Pontevedra and is known for its ‘hórreros’ or granaries, roadside crosses and rustic fishing buildings, symbols of a time gone by. On exploring, you will discover some spectacular views of quiet beaches and forgotten islands, some of which can only be accessed by special permission; women collecting seashells from the beaches and some of the most unique rural settings around.

Combarro La Graciosa – Canary Islands La Graciosa is an 8km long and 4km-wide volcanic island located just 2km north of Lanzarote. It is referred to as the ‘eighth island’ and is probably one of the very few places left in the world that while having a human population of around 700, there are no tarmac roads anywhere on the island. The only cars to grace La Graciosa are a couple of taxis. People come here to get away, to enjoy the silence, the stillness, the nature and the beauty. While it is only a 30-minute ferry hop from its tourist-hotspot neighbour, Lanzarote, La Graciosa is most certainly a place that tourism hasn’t reached – nor is it likely to. Yes, there are two little villages, Caleta de Sebo and Pedro Barba, a handful of apartments, which are available to rent to holidaymakers, but people mainly come here to do very little at all, although it’s a great place to hire a bike and cycle around. The restaurants are inexpensive and its specialities are, of course, the fresh seafood and fish. Cartagena – Murcia This south-eastern city that lies on the coast was founded in 227 B.C. by the Carthaginians. It was then conquered by the Romans not long after in 209 B.C. and was a very important merchant city during Roman times. It is one of the country’s most complete tourist cities in terms of history and architecture, with its impressive Roman theatre, Roman quarter, castle and the Byzantine wall, which was built between 589 and 590. Not only is it a gem for historians, but Cartagena also has some fantastic beaches, a great shopping district and some excellent restaurants that offer fantastic fresh fish, seafood and rice. La Calle Laurel de Logroño – La Rioja If you ever find yourself in the city of Logroño in La Rioja, you must make sure that you go to Laurel Street. Although it only consists of one road, it’s one that will make you feel as if you are on an eternal holiday! But take note, this street houses at least 60 wood-beamed bars and restaurants that offer the best of the best of La Rioja wines, as well as their corresponding tapa – garlic mushrooms, tortilla, patatas bravas, croquettes, ham … you name it, it’s there. There is a reason why this road is also known as the ‘tapa pilgrimage’.

All of them prepared with the appetizing cherries of la Vall de la Gallinera. Certainly, you will not be able to stop eating! Did you know that the cherries from la Vall de la Gallinera are unique? Their flavour is not from this world. Their intense red color, close to carmine, their pinkish pulp and their sweet taste make them look like sweets. Guaranteed by their certified Denominación de Origen, these cherries are grown in areas of dry land in terraces maturing in a soft microclimate thanks to its closeness to the Mediterranean Sea. There are many reasons which make this fruit so special. Their exploitation goes down in the family after generations; they are harvested mostly by hand due to the features of the land extensions where these cherries are cultivated where machinery cannot go into. The harvest takes place when cherries are mature at their best. La Vall de Gallinera is a municipality situated in the region of la Marina Alta (Alicante) that is composed by eight small urban villages: Benirrama, Benialí, Benissivà, Benitaiala, Carroja, Alpatró, Llombai and Benissili. It is a place which offers natural resources and wonderful landscapes which make it a place of a captivating beauty. A valley which has singular geographical features between mountains; it is symmetrical and exact emphasizing their truly spectacular views, being only twenty minutes away from the beach.

TRELI ON THE TELLY Fearless Fighter

WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

It’s good to see Helen McCrory getting a big juicy starring role in new drama Fearless (ITV, Monday) after so many great supporting parts like in Peaky Blinders (new series shooting now), and there’s a nice irony about this show. It’s been penned by prolific US TV writer Patrick Harbinson (24, Law & Order and Person of Interest) who amongst his credits is being on the team that writes for Homeland, which propelled Helen’s husband Damien Lewis to international stardom. McCrory plays human rights lawyer Emma Banville who likes a tough case and fighting misjustices, and she’s super-cool with a sharp tongue to go with it, as well as enjoying the odd smoke of a cigarillo. As with Harbinson’s previous works, that are loads of plots and conspiracies being thrown up in the air, along with a teasing final scene involving Michael Gambon and somebody over in the States that “want to shut Banville up”. That’s because despite her trying to the clear the name

of a child killer, she’s also delving into a Syrian case that is rattling cages on both sides of the Atlantic. There’s even an almost unrecognisible John Bishop as Banville’s partner in what is an American-style show, with international sales for ITV Studios written all over it. It’s worth your time just to watch McCrory’s character and let’s hope that ITV have earmarked Fearless as a “long runner” for a few seasons. There was no doubt in my mind that ITV dumped the wretchedly awful The Loch as a concession to BBC 1’s returning Poldark last Sunday, yet amazingly it got over five million viewers. Believe me, it won’t this weekend! This boring shambles seems to have been put together by somebody who may have watched Broadchurch after consuming a bottle of spirits, with some familiar-looking elements just badly done. You know the routine by now, with a potential serial killer and loads of suspects lining up with a bagload of secrets amongst the locals

…yawn, yawn! The saving grace is the wonderful location, but little else, with the Loch Ness Monster not even bothering to make an appearance, which certainly would have livened up this this insomnia curer. It’s a long time since I’ve seen so many good actors and actresses (the likes of Siobhan Finneran, Laura Fraser, and John Sessions) turn in one-dimensional wooden performances, with a predictable script and plot in the most disappointing UK TV drama of the year. For sheer class, I bring you my annual beating of the drum for The Americans, which has started its penultimate series on ITV Encore this week. This story of Soviet spies working undercover in the States in the early eighties continues to enthrall, with Welsh actor Matthew Rhys (and his range of crazy disguises) and his now real-life partner Keri Russell, continuing to fizz as the Russkie couple up to no good. They may be “the enemy”, but you can’t help rooting for them amidst all the entertaining plot

twists, including a shock death in the season opener. It’s not often that ITV bother with something decent on a Saturday night in the summer, but in the gap before The X Factor returns (doesn’t time fly?), we have The Voice: Kids making a UK debut. The format works well internationally, including here in Spain, and it was a perfectly enjoyable watch with some great young talent on display, whilst so far will.i.am has

not called a kid “dope” yet! We also have the tasty prospect of a summer ratings war with the Beeb from tomorrow, with BBC 1 launching their new choir show, Pitch Battle, with Gareth Malone amongst the judges. I’m a big fan of free speech, especially in comedy, and that’s why I’ve always enjoyed Frankie Boyle, who has returned to the BBC with New World Order. Boyle and his guests

let rip against Theresa May in last Thursday’s first show, which aired on BBC 2 within half an hour of the UK polls closing. It was savagingly funny, but it’s going to get a bit predictable if May is the main target all the time. Frankie is no Tory(to put it mildly) but there are plenty of polticians across the whole spectrum that also deserve a bit of a kicking, so don’t knock a woman all the time that is well and truly down!

RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Linda was worried about responding to a scam email.

Q

Richard, my husband received an email thanking him for his order and which he would receive in post, and total amount received was £160 odd, there was a link stating about contacting them and of course first reaction was,”that's not right”, I ordered nothing. I hit the link and it went nowhere, is there anything I can do, it contained my home address and his email address and my phone number. Would you please advise ASAP, I feel so stupid, in hindsight that I responded, it was received on mini iPad, my iPhone number and could have my iPad details, I am hoping you can put my mind at rest, if it is possible. I took photos of the email with my iPad so I did not send from his in case it a fact yours, they are a bit fuzzy as my hand was shaking,

A

Hi Linda, it sounds like a hoax to me, I suspect that there is no such order and that the senders simply want you to click on the link in the email - you did that on your iPad which was very lucky as its immune to viruses so I think you're good to go.

Of course, it's worth contacting your bank and credit card companies to ask them to look out for any suspicious transactions matching the amount on the order, but please don’t worry about it.

Rose Keeps Calm

2016 Olympic champion Justin Rose is looking to claim a second US Open title at Erin Hills, with the second of the majors getting underway yesterday. Rose became the first English winner of the US Open for 43 years in 2013. The 36-year-old could have doubled his major tally at the Masters in April but lost out in a play-off to Ryder Cup team-mate Sergio Garcia. "I've played very well at weekends in majors since 2010 and maybe just need to position myself better," he said. "Then see where we go from there. Hopefully we can get our head around the course.” "Attitude starts earlier on venues that some guys grumble about. Even at Merion in 2013, people weren't delighted with it.” "It's a different type of golf course and the USGA obviously aren't scared to go to different venues, so you've got to accept it and play.” "That's what pulled through for me in 2013; I remember being incredibly patient all week and also not buying into the score.” "I set my strategy up by how I saw the course but I never pressed because and ultimately that's what paid off for me, that patience." Since his US Open victory, Rose has recorded five top-10 finishes in major championships, three of them coming in a remarkable season in 2015. The Englishman shot 14 under par in both the Masters and the US PGA, but won neither. And in this year's Masters, Rose was two shots clear with five to play at Augusta before Spain's Garcia triumphed in the play-off to take his first major title. "I can only say from the Olympics and the Masters, that was the calmest I've felt on a golf course in recent times," Rose added.

A Bad Golf Day!

I was having a round of golf recently and my game was so poor, I really wondered whether I should have bothered, writes JOHN FARMER. It’s happened to all of us from mega professional stars to a mere mortal, but the question is why? When the wheels do come off in a round of golf they can sometimes hurtle off into the distance, something similar to what happens when a F1 car goes around a corner and one of the wheels decides to keep go straight on. As a golfer I’ve never carried a spare and when my wheels come off they stay off, resulting in a depressing admission of golfing frailty. In my recent round of shame, I hacked my way to a triple bogey seven to get things going. Four double bogeys, a couple of blobs and a birdie later, I was really frustrated to put it mildly! My tee shots were quite good but the rest including the putting was somewhere else. I did not lose my temper but was close to it. It was on the 8th, a par three, and I did get it, despite ending up in the bunker, but playing a good shot, after uttering a few choice words. My good play off the tee on the back nine and around the green kicked off with pars, a birdie and just a single bogey. I wasn’t overly happy with my irons, but I was playing a different game to the front nine and feeling pretty good. I was scoring solidly, always giving myself a great chance to get up and down if I missed the green. So my day ended on a relative high, but it was a question of what might have been! Sometimes it can be a struggle to stay in the moment on the golf course. You always start thinking about the score you are going to post but this is a dangerous thing to let into an often fragile mental golfing mind. It’s when this happens, that a poor pitch that leaves you 25 feet from the hole, then a three putt later and have a first bogey of the back nine. Another poor pitch on the next hole and another missed four footer and you are 4-over with three to go. You can literally feel you score slipping away. You feel determine to produce a good score on you next round, but as soon as you drop a shot, you get on the back foot, thinking about defensive golf which does not suit anyone. It never works because defensive golf doesn’t stay in the moment, but instead looks ahead to what we might score, and then you get scared of what can happen. Playing scared is mutually exclusive to swinging well. To score well, to keep a good round going, you have got to learn to stay in the moment, taking one shot at a time. I just need to put it into practice!

French Success

Torrevieja teenage tennis star Nicola Kuhn had a great finals weekend in the junior competition at the French Open at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, as he worked his way through a punishing schedule, writes DONNA GEE. The 17-year-old from La Mata lost a tight singles final to Australian Alexei Popyrin 7-6. 6-3. and then was back on court to win the doubles contest, paired up with Hungary's Zsombor Piros (pictured together) to beat the American team of Vasil Kirkov and Danny Thomas in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in just over an hour. Ultimately, the Torrevieja teenager was a victim of his own success after storming into both finals and dispatching world number one junior Miomir Kecmanovic in a nailbiting singles semi-final. The build-up at Roland Garros reached its peak last Friday, when Kuhn inflicted a rare defeat on Kecmanovic, then teamed up with Piros to plough through two tough doubles matches and set up a Saturday showdown with Thomas and Kirkov. Kuhn went into Saturday's matches on the back of nine straight wins over the previous fine days. But after effectively playing EIGHT sets of pressure tennis on Friday, something had to give.

The crunch came in his singles tussle with the lanky Popyrin, whose route to the final had been eased by an early exit from the doubles and a relatively easy singles semi-final against Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. And as his schedule began to get out of hand, Piros – who had already been knocked out of the singles - offered to abandon his own progress by withdrawing the partnership from the doubles. But it was a first triumph for the Kuhn-Piros combination, who were the top seeds, as they had their serve broken once in the first set, though their American opponents Kirkov and Thomas crucially lost it twice. Kuhn and Piros broke in the seventh game of the second set, and though they thought they might have thrown their advantage away as they served for the title and were reduced to love-40, they fought back to win the game and the title. And as his schedule began to get out of hand, Piros – who had already been knocked out of the singles - offered to abandon his own progress by withdrawing the partnership from the doubles. Despite losing in the singles final, Nico Kuhn, was very happy with the tournament. "I'm not disappointed at

all," said Nico. "I was pleased with my form, though I was getting tired with having to cram the singles and doubles matches in back-to-back". "My opponent Alexei Popyrin in the singles played very well, and perhaps some better shot selection on my part would have helped, especially in the first set which if I had won, then the result might have been different". Though singles are the priority for Kuhn, he's happy for the doubles success:- "Doubles tennis is still a bit unusual for me, but my main goal was to reach both finals, and I was very pleased with the way that me and my partner Zsombor got on". Despite the success in Paris, Kuhn reiterated that his priorities are on the ATP tour and not in the junior events. "It's the best thing for me and not to bother with the junior events for the rest of the year, including Wimbledon. It was a tough schedule in Paris, and I need to improve my standard which is what the main tour would do, which I cannot achieve in the junior ranks". Nico Kuhn will be live on TKO FM with Alex Trelinski this Saturday afternoon between 3.00 pm and 6.00 pm to talk about his career so far, and a look ahead to the junior matches in Wimbledon.

Sensational Rafa

Rafael Nadal described his "joy" at winning a record 10th French Open after beating Swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka in Sunday’s final. One of the greatest sports stars to come out of Spain, the 31-year-old won 6-2 6-3 6-1 to secure 'La Decima' at Roland Garros, and his 15th major slam title. Nadal - who won without dropping a set in the tournament for the third time - said he could not have imagined such success when he first won 12 years ago. He said: "In 2005, I thought in 2017 I'd be fishing on my boat in Mallorca." Nadal added: "I didn't really think I'd have such a long career and win so many tournaments." Nadal swept through the final in two hours and five minutes to extend his alltime lead at Roland Garros, with 10 titles to Bjorn Borg's six in the open era. He said: "This tournament has been very special to me, and it's true that it is unprecedented. "Trust me, I'm very happy that I'm the one who did it. "If I can do it, someone else can do it.

"But you need the right circumstances, the right ingredients to win 10 French Open titles. "I don't know if I will ever get to meet the player who will do better than I did." Nadal has struggled for form and fitness since his last Grand Slam title at the French Open three years ago, but has enjoyed a resurgence this year. Wawrinka had been expected to pose the first serious examination of Nadal's new-found confidence but he was brushed aside like the previous six opponents. "For sure he's playing the best he's ever played," said the Swiss. "But not only here. I think since the beginning of the year, you can see he's playing more aggressive, staying more close from the line.” "That's clearly the best he ever played. That's why he's winning so much again." There were emotional scenes on Philippe Chatrier Court as Nadal's coach and uncle, Toni, was asked to take part in the trophy ceremony. The 56-year-old has coached Nadal since child-

hood, taking the decision to change his naturally righthanded nephew into a lefthanded tennis player. He has been present in the player box for each of his nephew's 10 victories in Paris, but will retire from life on the Tour at the end of 2017 to run Nadal's academy in Mallorca. "For me it's unbelievable," said Toni Nadal. "We are lucky in this life because we receive so much. I never thought that my nephew can win 10 times he in Roland Garros. It's unbelievable. "It's the last for me as a coach but I hope I can see my nephew playing many more times here." Toni Nadal's role as head coach will be taken by Carlos Moya, the 1998 French Open champion who joined the team in December. Moya, 40, has seen his new charge reach the Australian Open final, losing to Roger Federer, and now reclaim his French Open title. "Every match in this tournament has been better than the one before, so I think it's been a perfect tournament for us," said Moya.

A Pathetic End ELCHE 0 REAL OVIEDO 2

Sevilla have bagged Eduardo Berizzo to become the club's new head coach. Berizzo, who left Celta Vigo at the end of the season, succeeds Jorge Sampaoli, who was appointed Argentina’s new boss at the start of the month. The 47-year-old former Argentina defender spent three years with Celta, leading the Galician side to a 13th-placed finish in LaLiga and the semi-finals of the Europa League last term. Berizzo helped Celta reach the semi-final of the Europa League this season before they were knocked out by the eventual winners Manchester United. In his three seasons at Balaidos, the 47-year-old also led Celta Vigo to two Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Take It Or Leave It!

Real Madrid have unveiled their home and away kits for next season on the back of a great campaign, as they won La Liga and retained the Champions League. Tellingly for those who still believe Gareth Bale might be on the move, despite signing a new contract, the Welshman was one of the featured “models” for the new kit. Real also won the FIFA Club World Cup last term, with their success celebrated on both strips. The new home kit features the traditional Adidas stripes along the shoulder, in blue with a v-neck collar. Real will also return to a black away kit for the 2017/18 season, with the purple being banished to the cupboard. The reverse strip is complete with turquoise trim, with three stripes down the side of the jersey. All three kits - complete with the latest in performance technology - commemorate the club's 115th anniversary, with a memorial stamp at the bottom.

Barca Bound?

Real Madrid have told Manchester United that they will need to pay 90 million euros in order to sign Alvaro Morata this summer, according to reports. The Marca newspaper claims that the La Liga champions are in no hurry to sell the 24-year-old and have made it clear to United that they will not accept a lower amount for the striker. Real are well aware that they have no reason to sell Morata, and coach Zinedine Zidane has been pleased with the Spain international’s contribution of 20 goals in all competitions. Madrid are also not in a position where signing their priority transfer targets – one of which is Kylian Mbappe – depends on the money raised from player sales.

Roman Obstacles

Barcelona are said to be tracking the 20-year-old Frenchman Ousmane Dembele, who had an outstanding season for Borussia Dortmund, after switch from Rennes the previous year. His price tag is said to be around 90 million euro. It is also reported that Dembele, who scored the winner for France against England in the Tuesday night friendly, is also eager to make a switch to Camp Nou. Neymar allegdly has personally urged the club to sign the 20-year-old at any cost as he believes he could add some much needed firepower. With Andres Iniesta ageing and Ivan Rakitic not enjoying his best form, Neymar believes that Dembele could add a lot to the side with his creativity and pace.

Be Patient

San Pedro del Pinatar hosted thirteen hundred competitors last Saturday in the fifth staging of the Pinatarius Obstaculum Cursus over a seven kilometre Roman-themed obstacle course that started and finished at the municipal sports centre. The athletes had to brave everything that was thrown at them over the cross-country route, with fences, mud, fire, and even some ice included in the 30 obstacles. At least lions and other living obstructions were not thrown in the way!

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has once again stated that he is confident that Lionel Messi will sign a new long-term contract with the club in the near future. Talks over a new contract for Lionel Messi have been ongoing for the past few months now. It is understood that Messi has no intentions of leaving Barcelona and will definitely sign a new long-term deal with the club.

A paltry two and a half thousand diehard spectators watched Elche’s last match in the Segunda Division last weekend, before they start relegated life in the Segunda B next season. Those who bothered to turn up saw some positive moves early on from the home side, before Oviedo booked their place in the Segunda play-offs with second half goals from Toche and Nando. One point out of the last 27 on offer for Elche summed up a footballing disaster, with the few people that were there resorting to venting their anger at the players, calling them mercenaries and other words of an even more critical nature. The Elche board came in for some verbal stick as well, with fans calling for their resignation. Life in Segunda B will start with a new deck of players, with just Liberto and Luis Pérez currently on contract for the next campaign, and talks will start soon to work which, if any, of the other players will stay. The Real Murcia coach, and ex-Elche player and Ilicitano coach, Vicente Mir (pictured below) is favourite to become the new Ilicitanos manager, with sporting director duties set to be taken up by the partnership of two other ex-Elche footballers, namely Sergio Mantecón and Jorge Cordero, who has been doing scouting work for Cadiz.

Taxing Times Premier Dates

He may have won his battles on the field to see his side win La Liga and regain the Champions League, but Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo now faces a real fight in the courts as he is accused of defrauding Spain’s tax authorities of nearly 15 million euros. In a statement released on Tuesday, the prosecutor's office alleged that the Real Madrid star and four-time Ballon d'Or winner had knowingly used a "business structure" created in 2010 to hide his income in Spain from his image rights, and described his failure to pay the correct tax as "conscious and willing." The lawsuit is based on a report sent to the prosecutor's office from Spain's tax agency AEAT, the statement added. Ronaldo took advantage of what is known in Spain as 'the Beckham law' - which allows foreign sportspersons to pay 24.75% income tax, rather than the 48% applied to Spanish nationals. Athletes must still, however, pay taxes on other income earned in Spain. In Ronaldo’s case, the former Manchester United winger is accused of having diverted some 150 million euros of advertising revenue through the British Virgin Islands. He becomes the latest high-profile footballer to become involved in a Spanish tax case. Ronaldo's long-term rival, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was sentenced to 22 months in prison for a €4.1m fraud, but avoided jail by paying a fine and agreeing to probation.

Striker Stays

Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann has extended his contract with Atletico Madrid until June 2022. Griezmann, whose previous deal was due to end in June 2021, has long been linked with United but the French international will remain a leading player in La Liga under Atletico coach Diego Simeone. A club statement said: "Atletico Madrid has reached an agreement with Antoine Griezmann for the extension of his contract for one more season. The French forward signed his new contract with our club, which now extends until June 30, 2022." According to Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, Griezmann's release clause of €100 million is to remain the same. Asked about Griezmann's new deal, Cerezo told the Cadena Sur radio station: - “Yes, it's one more year and the release clause will remain the same." The Spanish media have reported that the new deal will see Griezmann become the highest-paid player at Atletico. Cerezo, though, did not comment on the wage increase. He said: "The issue of the money is a private one. We have maintained a confidentiality agreement with respect to the money." Griezmann's decision to stay put is a big boost for Atletico, who cannot register any new players until January 2018 after FIFA's transfer ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Chelsea will begin their title defence at home to Burnley when the 2017-18 Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of 12-13 August. Newly promoted Newcastle host Tottenham, while Brighton welcome Manchester City and Huddersfield visit Crystal Palace. Spurs' first game at Wembley will be against Antonio Conte's champions on the second weekend of the season. The precise date of games will be set once TV schedules have been decided. The league season is set to finish on Sunday, May 13th 2018 - a week earlier than last season - with the World Cup finals in Russia starting on June.14th The English Football League fixtures will be released this coming Wednesday and Scotland's fixtures two days later. Questions have been raised about Tottenham's potential to perform at Wembley after a miserable run of results there in last season's Champions League, and Mauricio Pochettino's side will have a tough first test at their temporary home. The last time Spurs visited the national stadium was in the FA Cup semi-final, a game they lost 4-2 to this season's first visitors - Chelsea. But it could prove a tricky opening few weeks for the defending champions too, with Chelsea hosting Everton (26 August), visiting 2015-16 winners Leicester after the international break and then welcoming Arsenal (16 September). Arsene Wenger's Gunners have a chance to show their top-four credentials in week three when they visit Liverpool. Another early indicator in the race for the Champions League places comes in the following round of games, with Liverpool travelling to Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. Europa League winners Manchester United do not face another Champions League qualifier until they visit Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on the weekend of 1415 October. English football's top-flight sides will face four league games in nine days over Christmas and New Year, with eight in total from 2 December to 1 January. The final round of the Champions League group stage also takes place during that period, as traditionally does the fifth round of the League Cup. Arsenal welcome Liverpool two days before Christmas, while Brighton go to Chelsea on Boxing Day and Newcastle host Manchester City. West Ham make the trip across London to face Tottenham in the round of games scheduled for 30 December, with another London derby taking place on New Year's Day as Arsenal host Chelsea. There will be no easing into life in the top flight for those promoted from the Championship, with Brighton's first game in the Premier League at home to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Newcastle hammered Tottenham 5-1 in their most recent Premier League game at St James' Park, and it will be last season's runners-up Spurs who visit Rafa Benitez's side on the opening day. Huddersfield make their Premier League debut at Crystal Palace, before hosting fellow newcomers Newcastle a week later and completing their August schedule at home to Southampton. The Terriers' first game back in the top flight since 1972 is a repeat of their last, when they drew 0-0 at Selhurst Park in April that year. Brighton, meanwhile, are back in English football's top division for the first time since the 198283 season. Chris Hughton's side go to Leicester on the second weekend, before visiting Watford.

Dovizioso Double

47

The champagne cork truly popped for Italy's Andrea Dovizioso who won Sunday’s Catalunya Grand Prix in Barcelona to complete back-to-back MotoGP wins to close the gap on championship leader, Spain’s Maverick Vinales. The Ducati rider, who won last week's Italy Grand Prix, was ahead of Repsol's Spanish pair Marc Marquez, in second, and Dani Pedrosa in third. The victory moves second-placed Dovizioso within seven points of Yamaha's Vinales, who finished 10th. Reigning champion Marquez, who crashed four times in qualifying on Saturday as most of the field struggled with grip on a slippery circuit, celebrated his podium finish by falling on the rostrum. "It was a strange weekend for everybody to manage the track, the grip, the temperature, it was very difficult," said Dovizioso. "It was a strange race, we couldn't push any lap because the rear tyre drops a lot, but I had the speed so I was able to manage and stay on the front without pushing." “It was a strategic race more than anything else and we were good at interpreting the limits of the track and the tires. The track was very difficult and all the riders had problems with grip, which dropped off a lot and so we concentrated on administering tire consumption and on consistency, and this decision paid off.” “In the race I was able to be very fast without pushing hard when I found myself behind Pedrosa and this helped me a lot in the last ten laps, when I passed him and then pulled out a small gap over the two Hondas. I can truly say that today we were on really great form!” Championship leader Maverick Vinales(pictured below) was left scratching his head and somewhat befuddled about what happened. “Honestly, for me it's a big drama in my head right now, because I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm doing the same as in Qatar, Argentina and the other races. I'm riding the same way.” “At the end, I was riding really like Moto2. I could not understand. Honestly, on the straight, it was amazing. I was feeling very bad on the straight.” After seven of 18 rounds, Vinales has the points lead with 111, seven ahead of Dovizioso and 23 ahead of Marquez. The series returns next weekend for the Dutch Grand Prix at TT Circuit Assen. Meanwhile Marc Marquez's younger brother Alex won the Moto2 race, while another Spaniard, Joan Mir, took the honours in Moto3.

BIG BUCKS

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather (pictured) will meet UFC champion Conor McGregor in a fight that has been described as a "farce" and a "circus", but which could earn both men as much as 100 million American dollars. American Mayweather, 40, posted a video on Twitter confirming the bout will take place in Las Vegas on August 26th, with the message: "It's official." The fight - at light-middleweight - will be one of the richest in boxing history.

TERRY OFFER

Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp wants to sign John Terry for the Championship club. Terry, 36, who is leaving Chelsea this summer after 22 years with the Blues, has also been linked with Birmingham’s rivals Aston Villa. "He's a fantastic captain and great leader," said Redknapp. "We've made him a good offer and we have done the best we can. It's up to John now”.

LIONS FARRELL FEAR The British and Irish Lions face an anxious wait over the fitness of fly-half Owen Farrell ahead of the first test against the All Blacks, after he suffered a quadriceps injury in training. Farrell had been named on the bench for the match against the Maori All Blacks on Saturday, but has now been replaced in the matchday squad by Dan Biggar. Johnny Sexton starts at 10 in Rotorua (09.35 kick off, live on Sky Sports), with fellow Irishman Peter O'Mahony captaining from the flank. The first test of the Lions' series against New Zealand is a week tomorrow. Tour skipper Sam Warburton is among the replacements for tomorrow's game while Maro Itoje starts at lock in an otherwise unchanged pack from the one that beat the Crusaders last Saturday. Before news of Farrell's injury emerged, head coach Warren

Gatland had spoken of "keeping the All Blacks guessing" with his team selection. Sexton, 31, has not started since the first match of the tour against the Provincial Barbarians, but came off the bench to good effect in the win over the Crusaders in Christchurch. He partners fellow Irishman Conor Murray at half-back. "Johnny needs some more rugby and he's got a bit of his mojo back, so we wanted to give him a start," Gatland added. Gatland says Warburton is aware of the competition he faces in the back row if he is to start the first Test. Warburton returned from a minor ankle injury to play over an hour in the midweek defeat by the Highlanders in Dunedin. "He is fully aware that loose-forward trio went extremely well against the Crusaders," Gatland said. "This tour isn't about Sam Warburton, it's about putting the squad first, so if he isn't involved in the first Test he will fully understand that."

GREEN GRASS OF HOME World number one Andy Murray is relishing a return to the UK after his run in the French Open took him to the semifinals, and what better than his favourite grass surface as he takes to the Queen’s Club courts next week to try to retain his Aegon Championship title, ahead a bid to lift his third Wimbledon title next month. The Queen’s tournament starts on Monday, and last year Murray’s grass double saw him play a dozen matches, and win all of them. The record five times Queen’s champion will be joined by some big names next week including his conqueror in Paris, Stan Wawrinka, as well as Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov, though French Open champion Rafa

Nadal(see more on page 45) has had to pull out on the advice of his doctor after a strenious fortnight at Roland Garros. "I don't know how many more opportunities I'll get to compete for the Grand Slams so I want to make the most of it” said Murray. “That's why, after the French Open, I didn't take a long break.” "I took a couple of days off and then I've been on the grass courts to prepare as best I can. Hopefully I'll get some good matches in at Queen's to set myself up for a good run.”
