BRIT IN DOG ARREST

49-year-old British dog walker has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, in the Rojales area, after two unmuzzled dogs were left to roam without a lead and ended up biting the face of a 50-year-old woman in a Quesada park. He has been charged with crimes of serious recklessness and leaving the scene. The woman was knocked down by the free dogs, and she was bit in the face so badly that she needed urgent facial surgery. Rather than helping her, the man

fled the park with the two dogs. The Guardia Civil in Almoradi launched an investigation to discover who the owner was, with local residents identifying a British couple as the owner of the animals. When interviewed about what happened, they said that they knew nothing about the incident as they had employed a dog walker to exercise their pets. The walker was tracked down and though in possession of a license for poten-

hree Orihuela councillors have made pledges for the next year over improvements to the Orihuela Costa area, with a focus on waste collection and the state of the local beaches. The announcements come in the wake of continued criticism from local groups over waste collection in parts of the area, with FAOC (Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa) releasing pictures of uncollected rubbish strewn next to Cala Capitán beach (pictured) or on Playa Flamenca’s Calle Luis Gordillo (pictured right). Cleaning councillor, and newly elected Partido Popular president in Orihuela, Dámaso Aparicio, repeated previous announcements over the provision of more waste containers for waste disposal and recycling during the summer, along with extra

manpower. He added that more money is being spent, to remove seaweed from local beaches. The Courier has also received a number of recent complaints over the state of rubbish collection on the Orihuela Costa, including one reader Jim McClaren saying that some paths and adjoining areas in La Zenia “are in a disgusting state”, with dog dirt also aggravating the problem. New cabins for the beach rescue services and better

disabled facilities are being promised by beaches and coastal councillor Luisa Boné. She said access improvements would be made and extra toilets for disabled people would be provided, in addition to providing more wheelchairs to help visitors get to the water. Work has also been pledged to make Cala Cerrada more accessible, whilst the cabins for the lifeguards and emergency services will feature a treatment room, a rest area, and

toilets. Tourist councillor Sofía Álvarez talked about a commitment to improve signposting of the beaches, and also about the production of a new tourist guide for the Orihuela Costa (more on page four). The annual inspections have also taken place at the beaches of Punta Prima, Cala Mosca, Cala Estaca, Glea and Mil Palmeras, ahead of them being granted “Q” quality status for the 2018 summer season.
