HELP YOURSELF

51-year-old female bank worker from Almoradi has been arrested for stealing nearly one point three million euro over 25 years from a Russian customer. The Guardia Civil in Almoradi detained the woman on bank fraud and misrepresentation charges after getting a complaint from an 80-year-old Russian citizen. The bank employee enjoyed a series of luxury foreign holidays with frequent postings on social media showing off her lifestyle. The Russian opened up an account at a bank in Rojales in 1992 and opened up what he thought was a "trustful" relationship with the bank's commercial manager, who always gave him personal treatment every time he turned up.

Last month the client wanted to transfer a substantial amount of money and discovered the massive hole in his account, with the

bank employee having regularly supplied him with what were false statements, as besides lavish holidays, she also bought a big house

and a top-of-the-range car. The bank involved has not been named, and the employee has been granted bail by the authorities.

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT

uesday night was one of the hottest-ever recorded evenings across Alicante Province and the Murcia region, as humidity and temperature levels made sleeping an uncomfortable experience. The State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, clocked the highest night temperature at Alicante-Elche airport since it opened 50 years ago, with a reading of 28 degrees, whilst in Alicante City, temperatures did not drop below 27.8, the highest level since records began at their Ciudad JardĂn observatory in 1938. Readings in

Torrevieja and Elche recorded over 28 degrees, whilst Benidorm went over the 30 degree mark. In the Murcia region, San

Javier logged a minimum temperature of 27.2 degrees and humidity of 81 percentage, making temperatures feel around 30 degrees.

Weather experts say that the humid night was caused by a combination of cloud, a warm air mass, high sea temperatures, and dust.

International tourism, fuelled by British visitors, is continuing to be buoyant in Spain, with June’s figures showing a rise of over 11 percent compared to the same month last year. Eight point four million foreign tourists chose Spain in June, with the British market accounting for almost 26 percent of the figure, a four percent rise on the previous year, as the statistics continue to “rubbish” the so-called Brexit effect predictions of UK visitors staying away due to lower exchange rates. Up to the end of June, nearly 36 and a half million people had visited Spain this year, which shows a hike of over 11 percent on the same six months in 2016. The figures are even more dramatic for the Valencia region, including the Costa

Blanca, with 874 thousand foreign visitors coming to the area in June, an increase of almost 20 percent compared to June 2016. Over a third of visitors this year to the region up to the end of June, came from the UK.

The largest resevoir in Alicante Province at La Pedrera is only 30 percent full, as the drought conditions continue to bite in the region. La Pedrera (picture from the Informacion newspaper) supplies water to

Alicante Province and the Murcia region, with the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), saying earlier this year that some kind of water restrictions could not be ruled out from October.

Monday Incidents A four-year-old boy was rescued on Monday after he got into difficulties in an Orihuela Costa swimming pool. The incident happened at a pool on Avenida del Mar, and the child's condition was stabilised by SAMU paramedics, before he was taken to hospital in Torrevieja. A 62-year-old woman was

freed from a car after her vehicle was involved with a collision with another car on Monday night on the A-7 motorway at the BenferriOrihuela exit. The other driver, a 31year-old man, suffered a knee injury, and both motorists were taken to Orihuela's Vega Baja hospital.

Pilar Plea

San Miguel de Salinas council has asked provincial fire chiefs for the temporary summer fire station in Pilar de la Horadada to become permanent. The service runs until mid-September, with the authority arguing that a crew need to be based

close to the Sierra Escalona (pictured), which is going to be uprated to a Natural Park covering around eight thousand hectares of land. They say that incidents can only be dealt with properly if firefighters are close to hand, rather than

being in Orihuela, Almoradi, or Torrevieja. The Pilar summer placement was introduced because of delays to fire crews reaching incidents in the area due to delays on the N-332 coastal road as it passes around Torrevieja.

Danger Stretch Five people were injured shortly before 9.00 am on Sunday, as their car veered off the RM-19 San Javier to Murcia City road. Two were taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia with serious injuries, whilst the other three were admitted to San Javier’s Los Arcos hospital. No other vehicle was involved. It was the second serious incident on the RM-19 in the space of 24 hours, after two people were badly injured in an accident on Saturday which saw a young woman lose her arm.

Nearly Ready Work is progressing on schedule to complete the new main building of the refurbished Poeta Miguel Hernández school in Rojales, previously known as the Principe de España. Rojales mayor Antonio Pérez said that barring any last minute hitches, the Valencian education department have told him that the building will be finished by August 21st in time for the new school year, which starts on September 11th. The structure will accom-

modate older students, with those in the lower grades already moving into another new building earlier this year. Other parts of the site will then be developed including

the demolition of the main old structure that was subject of a long-standing campaign over safety concerns, which has been featured in The Courier over the last few years.

Child Racket

Four Romanian gypsies have been arrested for trying to arrange child marriages for a few hundred euro in the Murcia region, and beyond. The National Police in Murcia rounded up two men and two women aged in their thirties and forties and have charged them with a number of counts

including sexual abuse, sexual trafficking, and the ill-treatment and abandonment of children. Authorities got involved in June when they heard about a 12-year-old girl that was sold off for 500 euro for a marriage to a 19-year-old man. She refused to live at her husband’s home and suffered physical and psy-

chological abuse. Another case involved an 11-year-old girl who was “sold” for fifteen-hundred euro and is apparently back in Romania and expecting a baby. Inquiries from the police revealed that children were often forced into prostition and begging to help claw back the payment made for them.

On The Up Growing exports and increasing spending by households have boosted the Spanish economy back to the size it was before the 2008 financial crisis. According to the National Statistics Institute, the economy grew by almost one percent in the three months to June, up from up from 0.8 percent at the beginning of the year. The country's gross domestic product (GDP) has grown just over three percent over the last 12 months. Spain was pushed into an extended double-dip recession after the property market crash in 2008. The country's banking system was bailed out at the peak of Europe's debt crisis in 2012. Since then, the government managed to slash wages, increase exports and

bring the budget deficit in line with EU fiscal rules. The jobless rate, which is still the second highest in the eurozone at 17.2 percent, has fallen to its lowest

since July 2009. According to the current government forecast, the economy will continue growing and will expand by at least three percent in 2017.

Checking Out

Buyer Beware Two thousand fake "branded" fashion items have been seized and two Moroccans arrested at Guardamar market, as part of a sweep by the Guardia Civil against hawkers of fake goods. The two men, aged 32 and 39, had a wide selection of labelled items featuring manufacturers like Adidas, Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Chanel, All were fakes, with one of the men also found to be living illegally in Spain, with another 13 being detained for peddling bogus items across the region.

Keep It Clean Weighing fruit and vegetables at the Mercadona supermarket is going to be a thing of the past, as the Valencian-based retailer is to introduce electronic

scales at check-out tills. The company is rolling out a major investment programme across its sixteenhundred outlets, which will include workers being given

electronic tablets to access details of all the products on sale. In addition, the stores will also have new “lightweight” trolleys for the customers.

Safely Ashore

A new campaign to keep Pilar de la Horadada's beaches clean, which features giant drinks cans and cigarette butts, is doing a tour of the area for the rest

of the peak holiday season this summer. Every Friday to early September, the large pieces of rubbish will hit beaches at Río Seco, Higuericas,

Jesuitas, El Puerto and Mil Palmeras, in a bid to remind visitors to throw away their rubbish into designated containers, or take it home with them.

A tiny boat with 12 North African refugees crammed on board, was intercepted on Sunday by a maritime patrol vessel, some 30 miles off Santa Pola. It was the fifth such incident this year along the Alicante Province coast, as desperate refugees risk their lives in making a perilous journey across the water from North Africa. The dozen men were said to be in good health after being examined by Cruz Roja workers.

Tourist Terror

Drugs By Post

National Police officers have intercepted 33 kilos of synthetic drugs posted to Alicante Province and addressed to five British people, in a joint operation with Chinese authorities

An open-top tourist bus in Barcelona was attacked by four men in a protest against tourism in the city, with the passengers thinking it was a terrorist assault. The gang slashed the vehicle's tyres and daubed

graffiti on its windows as the bus stopped outside Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium. The men sprayed 'El Turisme Mata Els Barris' (Tourism Kills Neighbourhoods) in Catalan

across the bus windscreen, with Barcelona council describing it as an 'isolated incident' although they admitted it was the work of an organised group. No arrests have been made.

and the UK’s National Crime Agency. 15 parcels were seized of the material which had been advertised on a Chinese website, and sent to rented mailboxes owned

by parcel companies The drugs would then have been despatched in small sachets to potential customers. The British nationals have not yet been tracked down.

Death Riddle

Illegal Farm

A marijuana plantation in the Orihuela area capable of producing a hundred kilos of cannabis a year has been dismantled by the National Police. Three people of British and Ukrainian nationalties were arrested after the raid

at the village of La Matanza, with the 560 plants occupying three rooms in a house, with the final product set to have an annual market value of around 200 thousand euro. Sophisticated equipment was discovered in additional

to an illegal hook up to the electricity supply for a network of 52 halogen lamps. The Orihuela local police were tipped off a few weeks ago about the possibility of a drugs farm operating in La Matanza.

The body of a man said to be aged in his fifties was discovered on Wednesday lunchtime on the Torrevieja coast. Bathers alerted authorities

that had spotted the body in the rocks at Cala de los Trabajos (photo from Objectivo Torrevieja), with one theory being that he may have suffered a fatal head

injury when he fell accidentally onto the rocks below. The discovery was close to the area of the 222 nightclub.

Catalan Clash

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says his government has gone to the country's constitutional court to stop the regional Catalunya government going ahead with plans to fast-track laws through its regional parliament. Catalunya thinks the

measure will pave the way for an independence referendum on October 1st, which the national government in Madrid says is illegal. "The national government is fulfilling its duty to make sure the law is upheld," Rajoy said.

"Catalan society needs to be protected from a radical and divisive project which is being imposed on them by force," he added. "There will not be any referendum on October 1st. This is not constitutional and it is not legal."

Tomorrowland Fire

Over 22 thousand people were evacuated when a fire broke out on the stage at the Tomorrowland music festival north of Barcelona on Saturday night, Nobody was injured as a result of the blaze at the Parc de Can Zam on Santa

Coloma de Gramenet, authorities said. The fire brigade said a malfunction in the pyrotechnic equipment was the likely cause of the fire, which was brought under control within half an hour. The Tomorrowland festi-

val, which highlights electronic dance music, has taken place for 12 years in different countries, and was taking place for the first time in Spain. As a result of the incident, the remainder of the event was cancelled.

Seating Limit

One of the regular sights during the hot weather is spotting Spanish families taking out chairs and tables outside their homes, and putting them onto the pavement. Neighbours have a natter, as well as watching the world go by, but as the regional Informacion newspaper has reported, things can go a little bit too far. They have carried the story of a couple of ladies on Torrevieja's Calle Santa

Trinidad (picture from Informacion) in the Acequion area of the city, who placed their seats on an area designated for a car to be parked, attracting the annoyance of a driver who then called the local police to complain. The matter, with the intervention of the police, was settled without tempers getting frayed, but the women were told to move their seating onto the pavement, despite traditionally having encroached onto the road.

Drafted In

A hundred extra driving examiners will be employed in Spain next year, with 32 of them being brought in from the military, as waiting lists for a driving test reach at least six months, as examiners continue to strike over pay and conditions. General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) boss Gregorio Serrano says the current payroll, of 774 examiners, is

expected to rise to 876 by next year, net of retirements planned between now and 2018 – around 52 in total. But Serrano had denied that up 150 thousand driving tests have had to be cancelled as a result of the industrial action, which saw the strikes start in June and continue to take place every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Footwork Success

All types of dancing was featured in last month’s Footwork Dance production, Summer Dance, staged at the Los Montesinos culture and music theatre. The show was put together by Erica Dorrill and her team, and featured performers from the age of two years, through to a young 75 years! Ballet, tap, modern, jazz, lyrical, acrobatic and aerobic dance were received enthusiastically by the audience, along with some new routines, including the new DDMIX (Diverse Dance Mix), created by former ballet dancer and now-Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell. DDMIX is designed to get everyone moving whilst embracing a broad spectrum of dancing cultures and eras from around the world.

Night To Remember

Show Appeal The Deadwood Stage Company is after new people for their autumn show, after the success of their Granma Mia production earlier in the year. The theatre group, under the direction of David Whitney, was only formed last year, and they want people who can perform on stage, or work behind the scenes. More details are available from Vida Nelson on 966 774 127. Members of the group get together every Wednesday afternoon at 2.00 pm at the Porter House Bar at the Rioja centre on the Villamartin road.

Bricks For Rescue

The Dolores-based SAT Animal Rescue charity are in the throes of a big final push to build their much-needed rescue centre, as their current premises are far too cramped for the dogs that are being looked after. SAT’s Buy A Brick appeal is hoping to make the new building finally become a reality. The dogs at the kennels are over the moon with the amount of support they receive so that they can have proper meals, shelter from the weather, medical check-ups to make sure their healthy, and love and affection from the team and volunteers. The work is endless which makes finding time to raise funds for the new rescue centre a task on its own for the charity, and so the team there want to spread the word about the Buy A Brick fund, which is being supported by The Courier and TKO FM. If you can come up with any fun ideas for any events that would boost the total, then Selina at SAT would love to hear from you on 637 186 653. You can also spread the word by going to the website and passing on the link to your friends or anybody who might be interested, www.gofundme.com/buy-a-brick-fund

A special evening in memory of Jack Pout staged at Harry’s Bar in Quesada, along with donations from Jack’s family and friends, saw a thousand euro raised for the Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity. A variety of individual donations, plus money raised on the night, which featured entertainment from Jammers and Tyrone, made it an evening to be remember on the day that would have been Jack’s birthday.

A group of rowdy women on a hen weekend to Benidorm were bundled off a Ryanair flight by the National Police at AlicanteElche airport last Thursday night. The six women, all said to be in their late twenties, were said to have had their fill of alcohol when they boarded flight FR 9898 from Liverpool's John Lennon airport. Reports said they spent the flight drinking copious amounts of vodka, shouting, swearing and using sexuallyexplicit language, and even ended up fighting in the aisle. Passengers described their behaviour as 'unacceptable' and 'vile', saying the women were 'a drunken mess' and had been 'acting like creatures'. Ryanair cabin crew and the pilots made the decision to continue the flight to Alicante-Elche, but called authorities just before landing, with the National Police waiting to greet them to Spain. After landing, and before

Friday 4th August 2017

The Hens From Hell the seatbelt signs had gone off, they were already up and dragging their hand luggage from the overhead compartments, continuing to yell and swear. Other travellers booed at them as the cabin crew tried politely to make them sit down. When the police came and the women were eventually taken off the aircraft as crew told them to 'get out', passengers cheered and clapped at staff. But the raucous group, far from showing remorse for putting travellers through what some of them called 'the worst flight they had ever been on', was actually proud of their behaviour. One of them even wrote on Facebook: “Only us that can get escorted of [sic] plane by the Spanish police.” They also posted pictures of them lying by their hotel swimming pool. A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The crew of this flight from Liverpool to Alicante (July 27th) requested police assistance upon arrival in Alicante-Elche after a

number of passengers became disruptive in-flight. “The aircraft landed

All Too Much Representatives of Spanish grandparents have called on the Madrid government to help them out over looking after their grandchildren, whilst their own children have to go to work. The Democratic Union of Pensioners (UDP) and the Family Associations Union (UNAF), say that too much childcare is taking the pleasure out of having grandchildren. Research from UNAF suggests that one in four Spanish grandparents spends at least seven hours every day caring for their grandchildren. School hours and working hours clash, meaning youngsters come home just as their parents are returning to work after the long lunch

hour, and some families do not get together until around 9.00 pm on a weekday, meaning that childcare from grandparents has become essential. The UDP and UNAF is calling upon the government to 'recognise the social contribution' made by grandparent child-carers, perhaps by giving them a 'wage' for doing so. Some areas of Spain, most notably the Valencia region, have changed school hours, with the majority of primary schools now finishing at 2.00 pm, when the adults have their afternoon siesta, although free after-school activities are held until around 6.00 pm and additional ones are also available thereafter for a small fee.

Pet translators could let us talk to dogs within 10 years, a report backed by Amazon has claimed. A professor at Northern Arizona University is attempting to raise money to develop a cat and dog translation device, after he used AI software to analyse calls made by prairie dogs. Con Slobodchikoff, professor emeritus at the department of biological sciences at Northern Arizona University, has spent 30 years studying the behaviour of prairie dogs, which are actually not dogs at all but North American rodents. He used AI software to help analyse prairie dog calls, finding they had “a sophisticated communication system that has all the aspects of language”. “They have words for different species of predator and can describe the colour of clothes of a human, or the coat of coyotes or dogs.,” Slobodchikoff says. He is now so convinced that other animals use similarly decipherable language that he is attempting to raise money to develop a cat and dog translation device. Slobodchikoff says: “So many people would dearly love to talk to their dog or cat or at least find out what they are trying to communicate. A lot of people talk to their dogs and share their innermost secrets. With cats I’m not sure what they’d have to say. A lot of times it might just be “you idiot, just feed me and leave me alone”. But Juliane Kaminski, a psychologist at Portsmouth University who works on interactions between humans and dogs, is less optimistic that we will soon be able to decipher barks and bow-wows – mainly because she does not think that the way a dog woofs can be viewed as a language. “We would not describe dogs’ forms of communication as language in the scientific sense,” she says. But: “They do give out rudimentary signals of what they want and how they’re feeling.”

SANDY Sandy is a female Lab mix aged around two and a half years, and she’s currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Sandy is a playful, energetic young dog who loves people and would be such a faithful loving companion. She also gets on well with the various other dogs in her foster home. For about Sandy please phone PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com

For instance, she says, a right-sided tail wag is positive while a wag to the left not so positive. “That’s something humans might not so easily pick up on,” said Kaminski – although a translation device might have difficulty spotting that, too. Dogs’ barks, she says, are also context specific. They give out different yaps and yowls during play, aggression, when they are missing their owner and so on, but even people who have never owned a dog are fairly good at decoding these utterances.

ZEUS Zeus is a healthy, active 11-year- old boy who we recently rescued after he was run over in Valencia, but thankfully only had a slight limp which has now healed. He is great with other dogs and has obviously been a family dog. Zeus is chipped and neutered, great on a lead, house trained and loves to go for rides in the car. Mozzie Campaign San Javier council has launched a campaign to stop the spread of the tiger mosquito in the area, by following the recommednations of the Murcia regional health ministry. Health councillor, Catalina Pérez and public services councillor María Dolores Ruiz talked about the need for people to make sure that outside areas of their property don’t accumulate water which allows the mosquito to breed, as well as the prevention of mosquito bites during hot weather.

Logical Move

Almoradi's Tourist Information office is remaining open during August for the first time in a number of years. The facility will be open for business between

10.00 am and 1.00 pm on every day of the week, bar Sunday. Tourism councillor José Antonio Latorre said it was strange that the office, situ-

ated on the Plaza de la Constitucion, would shut in August, whilst so many local businesses, as well as the weekly market, were busy with tourists.

ADVERTORIAL

It’s holiday time again. Have you got that Liberty feeling? Once again, summer is here with a vengeance. Temperatures soar and with theinflux of tourists, you have to keep your wits about you at all times whendriving. Holiday makers who rent a car, may also be driving on the oppositeside of the road to their home country, like the British, so you need to beextra vigilant and try to anticipate their possible mistakes. One very common incident happens on roundabouts where drivers take the wrong lane. For example, if you want to carry straight on then it’s best to take the outside lane, and if you intend to turn left, take the inside lane. What many people do, is take the outside lane with the intention of turning left but the driver on the inside lane who is going straight on, has to be very careful to avoid a collision with the vehicle going all the way round. Aside from the inevitable increase in traffic accidents with the huge influx of tourists from around the world, you need to make sure your car is up to scratch too. For example, always make sure that your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month especially as road surfaces become very hot indeed and will affect the pressures. Needless to say, check the tyres too and make sure they are in good condition with enough tread. Also check the car’s radiator water level; the last thing you want is to overheat if you’re stuck in a queue and worse still have to wait for a breakdown truck. It’s also illegal to run out of screen-wash so keep this topped up. Driving with flip-flops or shoes without backs is not permitted either. Obviously seat belts must be worn all round and children need safety harnesses. And stating the obvious too, mobile phones must not be used for speaking (unless using a built-in hands-free device) and definitely no texting! If you do have an accident, remember the following: Stay calm and use the reflective vest. Use your vehicle’s emergency flashers and use two warning triangles at appropriate distances from the vehicle. Stay away from oncoming traffic. Call 112 if necessary. Fields Of Fire Three hectares of abandoned farmland in the Campo de Guardamar area caught fire last Thursday (July 27th), with firefighters bringing the blaze under control to stop it spreading towards the La Mata and Torrevieja natural park. Smoke was seen as far away as Santa Pola, with the fire starting at around 7.30 pm in an abandoned orchard. Fire crews were drafted in from Almoradi and Torrevieja, in addition to those based Guardamar, as the blaze was extinguished within 90 minutes.

The cause of a train crash in the Barcelona area last Friday morning which saw 56 people injured remains a mystery, after the train rammed into a platform barrier at Francia station. Traces on the track, and the discovery that the brake

was pressed down, show that the outer suburban or CercanĂas line train was not going too fast. The fact that the brakes were on, actually prevented a much more serious crash that could have ended in tragedy, engineers say.

All the mechanical and technical servicing and checks on the train were up to date, the last one having taken place on July 18th. Meanwhile, the 31-yearold driver showed negative results for drug and alcohol tests.

Orihuela council has approved spending one point eight million euro on projects around the Orihuela Costa at its monthly meeting. Councillors agreed on an overall package of six point point three million euros for the whole municipality, with the extra budgets coming from land sales over recent years. The extra coastal spending includes half a million euro for improvements to the Cabo Roig/Cala Capitan walkway; 300 thousand euro on parks; half a million

euro on road and pavement maintenance; as well as 200 thousand euro earmarked for beach maintenance. A number of measures

and projects had already been announced previously, with the council's July meeting rubber-stamping the spending programme.

Pest Control

Special measures to combat pests during the summer season are continuing with a second sweep across the Orihuela Costa this month.

Orihuela’s health councillor Noelia Grao said that the chemical spraying and treatments will take place to control and prevent the spread

of pests and rodents. The councillor also asked for residents to phone the town hall on 965 305 983 to report any problems.

Journey’s End Four people were rescued on Sunday after their boat ran aground in Santa Pola, as it went into the jetty of the Varadero pier area.

The nine metre vessel suffered an engine problem, and the occupants were unable to control it properly. They jumped into the water

and were fished out, and taken to the Santa Pola yacht club, with just of one of them suffering minor injuries.

Crucial Report Four British men arrested in connection with the Benidorm balcony death of Kirsty Maxwell 'may never be charged', according to indications in a police report. Kirsty, 28, died after falling 10 floors from the Apartmentos Payma hotel while on a hen do in April. She is said to have wandered into a hotel room where five men were staying. Judge Ana Isabel GarciaGalbis was asked to remand four of the men into custody last week by the Maxwell family solicitor Luis Miguel Zumaquero, but rejected the request saying there was “no new evidence” of the men’s participation in the death of the victim”. Ricky Gammon, 31, Anthony Holehouse, 34, Callum Northridge, 27, and Daniel Bailey, 32, deny any involvement in Kirsty’s death, along with a fifth man, Joseph Graham, who appeared in court earlier in the year. Judge Garcia-Galbis's comments in a two-page internal court document drafted after the Brits’ court appearance in Benidorm last week shows that they may never be charged. Police conclude in the 39page report that Kirsty panicked after finding herself in

the wrong flat and probably tried to jump into the swimming pool ten floors below after an alcohol binge, because she thought it was her “only escape route.” The four accused who appeared in court last week, issued a statement:- “This was a tragic accident and we categorically deny any involvement in this unfortunate incident. It goes without saying that our deepest sympathy goes out to Kirsty’s family and our thoughts are with them at

this terrible time". “We have had our names dragged through the mud and used and in a derogatory manner throughout this process through no fault of our own. The opinion of the judge is that this was an accident." The judge has yet to make a final recommendation on whether any of the men should be prosecuted and Kirsty’s solicitor Luis Miguel Zumaquero has insisted his fight to make sure they are put on trial will continue.

Shortbread Bramble Swirl INGREDIENTS For the shortbread 200g unsalted butter, cubed 100g icing sugar 300g flour, plus extra for dusting Caster sugar, for sprinkling For the swirl 150g blackberries, plus extra, or other berries, to serve 75g caster sugar 1 tsp chopped mint About 1 litre vanilla ice cream METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Mix together the butter and icing sugar in a bowl until combined. Add the flour and rub the mix together until it combines to form a dough. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 3-4mm thick. Cut into 16 squares measuring 8cm x 8cm. Place on a lined baking tray and bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Sprinkle with caster sugar then set aside to cool. To make the bramble swirl, heat the blackberries, sugar, mint and a splash of water in a pan. Reduce down to a jam-like consistency. Allow to cool completely. Take the ice cream out of the freezer for 10 minutes to soften slightly. The quantity you need will depend on how thick you want to make your sandwiches. I use 1 litre. Scoop the ice cream into a deep baking tray, roughly 32cm x 16cm. Spoon the bramble sauce on top then use a fork or a knife to marble the sauce into the ice cream. Return to the freezer to firm up. To serve, cut the ripple ice cream into eight 8cm x 8cm squares. Sandwich between two biscuits and serve with fresh berries. Wrapped in greaseproof paper, these will keep in the freezer for up to two weeks.

Rule that patients must finish antibiotics course is wrong, study says Telling patients to stop taking antibiotics when they feel better may be preferable to instructing them to finish the course, according to a group of experts who argue that the rule long embedded in the minds of doctors and the public is wrong and should be overturned. Patients have traditionally been told that they must complete courses of antibiotics, the theory being that taking too few tablets will allow the bacteria causing their disease to mutate and become resistant to the drug. But Martin Llewelyn, a professor in infectious diseases at Brighton and Sussex medical school, and colleagues claim that this is not the case. In an analysis in the British Medical Journal, the experts say “the idea that stopping antibiotic treatment early encourages antibiotic resistance is not supported by evidence, while taking antibiotics for longer than necessary increases the risk of resistance”. There are some diseases where the bug can become

resistant if the drugs are not taken for long enough. The most obvious example is tuberculosis, they say. But most of the bacteria that cause people to become ill are found on everybody’s hands in the community, causing no harm, such as E coli and Staphylococcus aureus. People fall ill only when the bug gets into the bloodstream or the gut. The longer such bacteria are exposed to antibiotics, the more likely it is that resistance will develop. The experts say there has been too little research into the ideal length of a course of antibiotics, which also varies from one individual to the next, depending in part on what antibiotics they have taken in the past. In hospital, patients can be tested to work out when to stop the drugs. “Outside hospital, where repeated testing may not be feasible, patients might be best advised to stop treatment when they feel better,” they say. That, they add, is in direct contravention of World Health Organisation advice. Other experts in infectious

diseases backed the group. “I have always thought it to be illogical to say that stopping antibiotic treatment early promotes the emergence of drug-resistant organisms,” said Peter Openshaw, president of the British Society for Immunology. “This brief but authoritative review supports the idea that antibiotics may be used more sparingly, pointing out that the evidence for a long duration of therapy is, at best, tenuous. Far from being irresponsible, shortening the duration of a course of antibiotics might make antibiotic resistance less likely.”

Alison Holmes, a professor of infectious diseases at Imperial College London, said a great British authority, Prof Harold Lambert, had made the same point in a Lancet article entitled “Don’t keep taking the tablets” as early as 1999. “It remains astonishing that apart from some specific infections and conditions, we still do not know more about the optimum duration of courses or indeed doses in many conditions, yet this dogma has been pervasive and persistent.” There are some diseases where the bug can become resistant if the drugs are not taken for long enough. New breast cancer blood test could improve treatment options in more serious cases Women with advanced stages of breast cancer could receive potentially lifeextending personalised treatment after taking a new blood test that detects tumour DNA. The test, known as a “liquid biopsy”, can detect and track alterations in 13 different genes, including some of the most important drivers of the disease. For patients whose cancer has spread beyond the breast and nearby glands – the most deadly stage of the disease – the new test could be used to improve and individualise their treatment as the disease progresses,

researchers have said. Around 10 per cent of women have metastatic, or stage four, breast cancer at the time of their diagnosis, according to cancer support charity Macmillan. The average survival rate is around two years. This is the first time scientists have been able to analyse two kinds of acquired DNA mutation in a single blood test. The study, published in the journal Clinical Chemistry, described how the researchers first looked at cells grown in a laboratory before analysing DNA in blood donated by 42 women

with advanced breast cancer. Cancer-specific genetic changes were detected in half the women. In the case of one in five patients, information from the tumour DNA could have been used to alter treatment. None of the mutations were found in the blood of nine healthy women that was

also tested. One gene that can be examined for changes using the new blood test is called HER2. It usually makes proteins that control the growth of healthy breast cells, but also plays a role in the development of around 15 to 25 per cent of breast cancer cases. These “HER2 posi-

tive” breast cancers can be targeted with the drug Herceptin. In addition, the test can spot mutations in the oestrogen receptor gene ESR1, linked to resistance to anti-hormone therapies such as aromatase inhibitors. Once a patient is known to have these mutations, she can be offered other forms of treatment such as chemotherapy. “By analysing blood plasma to measure for cancer-specific changes to key breast cancer genes – including the HER2 and oestrogen receptor genes – we hope this test could help doctors

and patients choose the best treatment at the best time,” said Dr David Guttery, from the University of Leicester. Somatic “point” mutations occur when DNA molecules are shuffled in the wrong order. Copy number alterations (CNA) are another type of mutation involving extra copies of genes that produce too much protein. “We have developed a novel blood test that can simultaneously detect somatic mutations and copy number alterations that are integral in driving the growth of breast cancer,” said Dr Guttery.

How Golfing exposes the body to toxins Golfing is a great sport. The lush green golf courses surrounded by trees and beautiful shrubs make golf the ideal game for those wanting to spend time in nature while engaged in sport. But is it possible that the beautiful natural surrounds that attract golfers could be a course for health concern? There is a reason to believe that Golfers expose themselves to toxins from the pesticides, insecticides, fertilisers and other chemicals used to maintain golf courses. Golf courses require vast quantities of chemicals for maintenance. According to Tourism Concern - a British environmental group, the average golf course requires 1,500 kg of chemical fertiliser, and this is not including pesticides, weed

killers and others. The Toxic Fairway Report, one of the most comprehensive studies on Golf courses concluded that Golf courses require up to 4 to 7 times the amount of pesticides used in farming. Many of the pesticides used in golf courses are proven causes of cancer and diseases of the reproductive and nervous system. One of the most widely used weed killers in golf courses is 2,4-D, a known endocrine disruptor responsible for hormonal disorders that lead to thyroid problems, prostate cancer, sexual dysfunction and reproductive abnormalities. Glyphosate (Round -up) is another commonly used pesticide associated with many chronic diseases including inflammatory

bowel diseases, Heart and nerve diseases, as well as Parkinson’s. A study published in 1994 found that Golf Course Superintendents have a higher mortality rate from cancers of the large intestine, prostate, lung and the prime suspects were

chemical fertilisers and pesticides used in golf courses. Inevitably, golfers also are getting exposed to these pesticides. The diagnostic scans carried out at MedB reveals that people who play golf routinely tend to have significant levels of toxins such

as lead, cadmium, pesticides, insecticides and many others. Foreign and toxic chemicals in the body are broken down by the liver and flushed out by the kidneys. However, when excessive, the detox organs become overwhelmed and unable to

cope, causing toxins to accumulate in organs and eventually cause inflammation and disease. The most common side effects from toxic overload are headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Fortunately, toxins can also be eliminated by a few agents such as Pectasol ( Modified Citrus Pectin). Golfers should aim to detox with Pectasol at least twice every year. Until the use of toxic chemicals in golf courses is properly addressed, it pays golfers to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their health while enjoying the game.

Western sperm counts 'halved' in last 40 years "Sperm counts among Western men have halved in last 40 years," say recent reports. A major review of research carried out since 1973 found an estimated 50-60% drop in sperm count

in developed nations. Researchers looked for studies that reported measures of either total sperm count or sperm concentration in men not known to have fertility problems.

They analysed the findings of these studies and considered trends over time to see if there had been any changes in recent decades. They concluded that total sperm count and sperm

concentration had decreased over time in Western countries, but this trend was not as strong or didn't exist in other parts of the world, such as Africa, Asia and South America. Both the researchers and the media have a number of theories as to why this might be the case, ranging from exposure to chemicals and

pesticides to The Independent's suggestion that modern life was to blame. It's not clear why. Both the researchers and the media offered a number of suggestions. But until further research is carried out, we just don't know whether these speculations have any merit. Talk of human extinc-

tion in the media is premature. Although the study did report a dramatic-sounding decline in average sperm count from 92.8 million/ml to 66.4 million/ml, this is still well within the range needed to conceive. Men can help protect their sperm by avoiding smoking and not drinking too much alcohol.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. Marrakech Travel Guide

Koutoubia Mosque Exotic music, snake charmers, bustling bazaars and spicy aromas: Marrakech is an intense experience for all the senses. Formerly an imperial city and caravan trading post, it was founded in the 11th century, and the old city – the medina – feels as though it has changed little over the centuries. When finding a hotel in Marrakech, sleep in style and try a stunning, traditional mosaic and jewel encrusted ‘Riad’. A maze of narrow alleys, countless market stalls and an eclectic mix of artisans, from story tellers to henna tattoo artists, give Marrakech a vibrant atmosphere and a true sense of adventure. Known as the ‘Red City’ for its ochre-coloured sandstone buildings, and with the snow-peaked Atlas Mountains providing an impressive backdrop, this is a fascinating city which will appeal to even the most seasoned traveller.

Eating and drinking in Marrakech Menara Marrakech is the ideal place to get acquainted with Moroccan cuisine, with a limitless choice of places to eat ranging from barbecues in the street to classy restaurants serving international cuisine. Perhaps the best and most authentic way to sample traditional dishes, how-

Other things to do in Marrakech Menara Marrakech has a number of cultural sites, many of which offer some respite from the hustle and bustle of frenzied medina life. The beautiful gardens of the Koutoubia Mosque are a peaceful haven for visitors, which, unlike the Mosque itself, permit non-Muslims. Head to the Menara Gardens for views over the medina and the Atlas Mountains, or the exquisite Majorelle Gardens, previously owned by French designer Yves Saint Laurent and home to the Museum of Islamic Art. Museum-lovers are well catered for, with the Dar Si Said Museum a particularly notable example, displaying a captivating array of objects illustrating Moroccan history, and a wonderful collection of local art and craft. Culture vultures will also love the ornate El Bahia Palace, which gives a fascinating insight into life as a 19th century Moroccan nobleman. For a traditional Moroccan experience visit a Hammam or public bath house, such as Bab Doukkala or Dar El-Bacha, for a massage and spa treatment. Les Bains de Marrakech are more geared towards tourists, while others are frequented by locals and are more authentic.

Le Tobsil Restaurant ever, is to wander amongst the dozens of stalls set up in the evenings in Djemaa el Fna square. Among the most popular dishes to try is the tagine, a slow-cooked stew infused with exotic spices in a clay pot, while the more adventurous might pluck up the courage to try a bowl of local snails. Marrakech Menara climate Marrakech enjoys a Mediterranean climate of warm summers and mild winters. Though temperatures from July to September are hot, the climate is not humid, which makes the heat tolerable. Light rainfall is not uncommon from November through to April. When to go to Marrakech Menara Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit Marrakech from the point of view of the temperature, but if you seek heat, go in the peak tourism months of July and August. It is usually sunny all year round, so there is not really a bad time to visit, but it can be cold at night during the winter. Flying to Marrakech Menara Flights to Marrakech land at Marrakech-Menara International Airport, located just 6km to the southwest of the city. There is the unreliable half-hourly number 11 bus service to get you to the medina, or you can take a ‘petit taxi’, but be prepared to bargain to get a good deal!

Nudist beaches in Alicante

Sunday 6 August, 2017 Torrevieja Olympia race de Torrevieja 2017. 9k fun race. Thursday 10 August, 2017 Santa Pola Guided tour of the salt lakes, in English.

If you have never visited a nudist beach, perhaps you should make this summer a time to change. The Valencia region has a wealth of descreat corners and coves within the record number of Blue Flag beaches, and a wide selection of nudist areas available. In the Alicante province, it is no different, with quiet corners for you to get that all-over tan littered all along the coastline. Here are a few suggestions. Racó of the Conill is a calm cove situated in Vila Joiosa. Surrounded by mountains and with somewhat restricted access, it is located in unique surroundings. You can also access several routes on foot from here. They say that in the depths of the sea you will find natural beauties. The ideal place for lovers of snorkeling. Besides, it is one of the more “gay friendly” nudist coves in Alicante. Thinking about visiting Racó del Conill? Find accommodation in the city centre of Benidorm, in the “gay friendly neighbourhood” and get suntanned in this lovely cove. You are only 30 minutes away by car. Going to Cove of Moraig in Benitatxell means enjoying the blue turquoise colour of the sea and becoming impressed by its rock formation such la Falla del Moraig and la Cova dels Arcs. The Cova dels Arcs has an air to the famous Blue Window in Malta. Plus, this zone has an easy route for hiking which goes round the cliff until the next cove. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Casualty has been gracing BBC 1 for over three decades and some people might find it hard to believe that the producers of a new US series called ER flew over to the UK back in the early nineties to check out Casualty on set in order to get some tips for new project. The medical drama occasionally comes up with something different and there was plenty to enjoy in last Saturday’s seasonender which in effect was a live episode. It was all done on a single camera in an endless take and it had that ER feel of authenticity and pace, with the hook being Duffy showing around a couple of students who fancy a job in the medical profession. The icing on the cake would have been for the episode to have actually been done live, but it did show that there are still plenty of legs left in the old war horse which still delivers excellent audience figures and wins awards. Much as I like Casualty, I still prefer the spin-off that is Holby City on a Tuesday

night, which seems to be going through a phase of bringing back some old favourites, and which this week brought back the power-hungry Guy Self (John Michie) having learnt no lessons from his past misdemeanors. An actual doctor (well ex-Doctor Who) Paul McGann will also be joining the cast shortly. The Handmaid’s Tale (Channel Four) bowed out in glorious style this week, with the handmaids offering some serious rebellion when they refused to do a stoning. It was gripping stuff and I can’t wait to see series two next year, and well done to Elisabeth Moss for her emotional lead performance, including a wonderful foulmouthed tirade against her “mistress” over the treatment of her young daughter. The show has put phrases like “Praise Be” and “Under the Eye” into the conciousness, and alongside Big Little Lies and The Good Fight, it’s amongst a clutch of the best new US dramas of the year so far. Add to that list a real treat coming

Lots Of Life Left

this autumn to BBC 2, with Feud, which tells the story of the rivalry between Hollywood greats Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. It’s an utter scream which you’ll love. Game of Thrones (Sky Atlantic) is on fire at the moment. The violence and sex scenes grab the headlines, but for me Thrones is at its very best when the script dominates, and it has never been better than this current run. This week’s episode was one of the very best with some great exchanges and revelations which include Jon Snow meeting the dragon lady Daenerys; Cersei being nasty as ever, and a wonderful final scene when Lady Olena (played by the peerless Diana Rigg) of the House Tyrell exacting some great revenge in a reveal going back a couple of series. A box set recommendation comes from Amazon Prime and their drama The Man in the High Castle, looking at what might have been in North America if the Nazis and Japanese had

won the Second World War. The cast is led by Rufus Sewell as an SS boss in the States, and besides the obvious story of resistance, we have a completely different and intriguing layer that gets you guessing. The set designs and attention to detail add to the experience, and a third season is currently in production of this captivating series.

10 Puppies and Us (BBC 2) is an absolute winner looking at dogs hooking up with their new owners, including a Spanish rescue podenco called Pedro. It’s a follow-up repeating the same formula of Six Puppies and Us from a couple of years ago, but what surprised me was the way some of the owners treated their pets, almost to the

level of ignorance, not having done any research. Seeing Pedro “caged” during the night, and seeing him break-out did not sit well with me at all, in addition to another owner disregarding the advice of an animal behaviourist and wanting to acquire more dogs, with little sensible consideration for the ones she had already.

Talk About the Weather!!! This week saw the hottest night in history across Alicante (and other places as well). You probably already know that if you´ve read the story on the front page of The Courier this week. However, you might also be aware already if you have access to the internet. Not only has this week been the hottest in history on the Costa Blanca, as a result, The Courier´s website, and social media platforms, have also broken records. Thanks to you visiting that is. The weather article on the front page was posted on the website earlier in the week, and, subsequently, shared through our Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. On Facebook alone (at the last count as of Thursday morning), the article had been seen by over 42,000 people. These are Facebook´s own figures by the way, we´re not making them up. It had also been shared 377 times to other Facebook profiles and pages, and, inevitably, was a talking point for many who commented. "No air con yet just the ceiling fan. No sheet over me as I have neuropathy in

my legs, feet, arms and hands and last night they were literally on fire. Hate every second of the miserable condition. Even swimming in the pool I feel as if my legs are on top of a flame", said Tina. "It was. Horrible!", said Uschy. Kevin said, "The breeze offers no respite... it's hot like a hair dryer. Not sure I could survive without aircon. It's like we're in a hot bubble." Miriam summed up the feeling of many, saying simply, "Unbearable!!!!" Meanwhile, some of our readers in the UK also added their comments, like Ray, who said, "well I'm in Yorkshire .for 6 .weeks .left alicante region 20th July ..it's only 21 23.degrees here just fab .fab.fab." "Hot here in Wales last night but nothing compared to Spain. I feel sorry for anyone suffering!!” said Maureen. The website too was also inundated with visitors, with the weather article being the most popular story of the week, although it was closely followed by stories about chaos at the airport and nudist beaches across Alicante, as well as the new passport scanning

machines and the letter from HMA Simon Manly. We try to devote a lot of time to our internet visitors, and because there is no restriction on space like we

have with newspapers, you will find even more articles on thecourier.es than make it into the paper, including breaking news, as it happens, and more, so make

sure you bookmark it today. Remember the website address is, thecourier.es, and the Facebook page, couriernewspaper. Feel free to add your

comments to any of our articles and we will feature the best ones in The Courier newspaper in print, as well as them being available online.

Three new series of ‘The Cruise’ to be filmed this year

Three new series of ITV’s hit documentary ‘The Cruise’, which will be set on board two Princess Cruises ships, are being lined up for next year. Wild Pictures will once again board 'The Cruise' and reveal what life at sea is like for both crew and guests on board some of the ocean’s largest cruise liners. The new series of The Cruise will include 6 x30minute episodes in the Mediterranean, returning to the 3,560-guest Royal Princess as she cruises from Greece to Spain and everywhere in between this

The series are commissioned for ITV by Satmohan Panesar, Commissioning Editor and Sue Murphy Head of Factual Entertainment. RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Janet was having problems with her laptop not ADVICE: Simon was having some trouble ejecting a DVD turning off. from his Mac

Q A

Hi Richard, My Samsung netbook is stuck. On screen "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 1 of 4"Tried Alt Control Delete with no change.

Q

Hi Richard, not sure whether you have experience of Mac computers or not, most of your answers seem related to Windows computers? I have a problem with my iMac, its running OS X and I don’t seem able to eject the DVD that I inserted about 2 weeks ago! I have tried pressing the eject button on the keyboard, I have also tried dragging the DVD icon on the screen down to the trash bin but nothing seems to work – can you help?

A

Hi Simon, yes we support Mac’s and Linux in addition to Windows comHi Janet, when you say "stuck" how long has it been sitting there? Ideally puters it’s just that the large majority of emails that we receive are for we wouldn’t want to turn off the computer if it were installing updates but Windows related problems and therefore that’s why you see more of them if it’s been there for "hours" then you may not have any choice. Updates printed. With regards to your particular problem, it’s a strange one; usucan sometimes take a very long time to install so it's best to be patient, however ally the “dragging it to the trash can” works fine even if the keyboard button is if you do think that its crashed and you need to turn it off then you can press and broken. Firstly you need to make sure that there are no applications using the hold the on/off button for around 5 seconds and your laptop will turn off. DVD drive, if they are then this could be the cause of your problem, restart your iMac to ensure that the DVD is not in use. If that doesn’t work then you could try restarting it again but this time whilst holding down the left mouse button, this should force all of your optical drives to be opened and hopefully will eject you disk. Update: Thanks for the advice Richard, you were right, I restarted it holding down the mouse button and out it popped!

The Struggles of G-Mac

If golf fans are scratching their heads about the form of Rory McIlroy, who sacked his caddy at the weekend (writes JOHN FARMER), then what about his Northern Ireland buddy Graeme McDowell? McDowell will be playing at next week’s US PGA Championship which starts this Thursday (August 10th) at Quail Hollow, only thanks to an invite by the US PGA. The former US Open winner is ranked 101st in the world and outside an automatic qualifying place, and rather than kicking his heels around, he can try and recapture some form next week. McDowell has missed four of his past five cuts and the 37-year-old Ulsterman exited the Canadian Open at the halfway stage last Friday. A one-over 73 left McDowell on three over par, seven shots shy of the cut. He carded five bogeys and four birdies in the second round in Ontario. McDowell, who has slipped to 101st in the world rankings and did not earn a place at last month’s Open at Royal Birkdale, is 119th in the PGA Tour's Fedex Cup standings.

Two-times US Masters champion Bubba Watson says that golf is boring, and he blames slow play. His solution is to cut down on the number of players. “Some rounds go on for five hours. I’ve got sleeping and stuff I’ve got to do.” “We’ve got to speed up and the only way I think we can do that in professional golf is to cut fields. 156 players in one field is just too many, you can’t do it.” Watson’s idea though seems to be flawed as a reduced field might give a green light for play to get

even slower, as well as cutting down on the number of players that spectators can enjoy on course, or on television. In conjunction with reducing field sizes, he also wants to get rid of the halfway cut. “I won a tournament and Steve Stricker almost won the other week by making the cut on the number,” he added. “That one stroke can make me miss a cut and it can hurt that tournament, hurt your emotions, hurt your FedEx Cup points and in many other different ways.”

Not that long ago, “G-Mac” looked a potential world-beater, and as one of the nice guys in golf, everybody hopes that he can regain that touch that made him so good to watch. Talking of viewing, the fourth Major will be screened live by the BBC, after the US PGA refused to renew a 10-year deal with Sky Sports. Fascinatingly, the US PGA turned down big pay days with other broadcasters because it wanted the mass exposure that the BBC would bring to the event. That’s something the R & A seem to be ignorant of, with the miniscule viewing figures on Sky for the Open a few weeks ago. The R & A may have a point over the Beeb’s “conservative” style of coverage compared to Sky, but surely they have a responsibility to maximise the Open’s exposure for the good of the sport, rather than picking up a few extra quid? It’s something that English cricket has regretted, as it brings back live and recorded cricket to the BBC in a couple of years time, in a bid to get young people interested in the sport. A timely lesson indeed for the R & A.

Anyone For Tennis?

The 22nd annual Torrevieja tennis tournament starts tomorrow (Saturday) and runs until Sunday August 13th, with around 300 participants from around Spain and abroad expected to take part. Proceeds from the event will go to the city’s special needs ALPE school, with event formally launched by

Torrevieja’s sports councillor Víctor Ferrández, along with Antonio Tafalla, the president of Torrevieja Tennis Club, tournament director Humberto Zuleta, and tournament referee David Pérez. Previous tournaments attracted players of British, Russian, Ukrainian, and Swiss nationalities, with a variety of different cate-

gories spanning ages, plus an increase in prize money. Local tennis star, Nico Kuhn, who is fast climbing up the ATP men’s rankings list as he does well in the ATP Challenger series, will also be staging a tennis clinic. The 17-year-old from La Mata cut his tennis teeth by being involved with Torrevieja Tennis Club.

Beach Activities

Villananitos beach in Lo Pagán hosted Spain’s regional beach football championships last weekend for women and the boy’s cadet section. 16 Spanish regions were represented in the event at San Pedro del Pinatar, with

the victors in both categories coming from Catalunya. For the rest of August, Villananitos beach is offering free sessions for people to try out a whole variety of sports like beach football, volleyball, rugby, baseball, and frisbee.

The sessions are running on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 10.00 am and noon; with early evening courses on a Tuesday and Thursday between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm for all to enjoy throughout the summer.

Super Swimmer

An Alicante Province man has become the first-ever Spaniard to swim Japan's Tsugaru Channel, with Jorge Crivillés from Villaneuva beoming only 29th person in do so. One of the crossings in the international Seven Oceans challenge, the 34kilometre stretch of sea links Hokkaido, Japan with the island of Honshu and is one of the toughest of them all.

But Crivillés, 46, managed it in eight hours and 29 minutes without stopping, the fifth-fastest time in history. His brave move was in an attempt to raise money for the Spanish Association of Lymphoma, Myeloma and Leukaemia Patients (AEAL) the childhood cancer research fund, La Hucha de Tomás ('Tomás' Piggybank') and the cancer foundation ASISA.

ASISA helped him out with the practical aspects of the trip, including video footage of Crivillés' arrival at Honshu island after his eight-and-a-half-hour swim, a moment he describes as 'very exciting'. Crivillés began swimming in the sea to help him recover from a back injury in 2009, and became bitten by the open water crossing bug very quickly.

Torry Training

Pre-season training started towards the end of last week for CD Torrevieja, as they get ready for relegated life in the Preferente. Whilst some of their local rivals like opening day opponents CD Almoradi and CD Thader already published their squads by the middle of July, no formal announcements regarding any players has come from Torrevieja, or who coach Pedreno may be looking at during the training sessions at the Nelson Mandela stadium. The position has not been helped by a proposed link-up with the City of Malaga academy falling through. The indications are that Pedreno may be starting the season with pretty much a clean slate of players, and no details of any pre-season friendlies have been announced as The Courier went to press.

Dani Stays

CD Thader has received a major boost ahead of the forthcoming Preferente season with the news that one of the team’s star players, Dani Lucas, will play for a fourth season at the Rojales-based club. The influencial 24-year-old midfielder was one of the nominees for last season’s Golsmedia awards for best player in group four of the Preferente, and used to play for CD Torrevieja. The first friendly match for Thader will see them entertain FC Pinatar in Rojales tomorrow evening (Saturday August 5th), with an 8.00 pm kick-off. That will be followed by a Wednesday evening home encounter with CF Celtic Elche Juvenil, kicking off at 8.30 pm.

Deal Hiccup

Barcelona forward Neymar transfer move for a world record 222 million to Paris St-Germain appeared to stall yesterday after La Liga refused to sanction the player’s release clause. PSG lawyers arrived at La Liga HQ in Madrid yesterday morning in an attempt to put the finishing touches on a deal for the Brazil international. But a La Liga spokesperson said yesterday: "We can confirm that the legal representatives of the player attended La Liga to pay the clause and this has been rejected." A spokesman for the office of La Liga president, Javier Tebas, had warned on Wednesday: "We will not accept the money for the liberation clause, the reason is that we have doubts that this money is in accordance with UEFA Financial Fair Play rules." The Brazil international told his team-mates at training (pictured arriving) on Wednesday that he wanted to leave the La Liga club. He was then given permission by Barca coach Ernesto Valverde not to train and to "sort out his future". The 25-year-old contract has a release clause set at 222m euro, which PSG are understood to be ready to pay. He was due to be in Paris yesterday after undergoing a Paris Saint-Germain medical in Portugal. The forward travelled to Porto to undergo his medical examination on Wednesday, accompanied by the former Barcelona and PSG defender Maxwell, who now works as the French club's assistant sporting director. Qatari fund Oryx Qatar Sports Investments took over the running of the Paris club in 2011. PSG, who also spent big when they signed Edinson Cavani from Napoli for over 60 million euro have won four league titles since the acquisition. Neymar moved to Barcelona from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 for 60 million euros, and signed a new five-year deal with the 24-time La Liga champions in 2016. His representative Wagner Ribeiro, who on Wednesday tweeted that he was in Paris, said last year that his client had been offered a tax-free 700 thousand euros a week to sign for the French club. He also said the forward "was close to a move to Manchester United". Neymar played for Barcelona in the recent International Champions Cup in the United States, before travelling to China to fulfil commercial commitments. The Brazilian has scored 105 goals for Barcelona, helping them to two league titles, three Copas del Rey and a Champions League crown.

Elche Silverware

Elche got their hands on their first trophy of the season last Saturday weekend, namely the Trofeo de Vinos de Yecla, after they romped through a a penalty shoot-out at Yeclano Deportivo, after the scores finished one-all at full time. Nino had given the Ilicitanos the lead in the first half, and they walked away after the penalty shoot out which didn’t last long, as Elche scored their first three, and Yeclano Deportivo failed to hit the back of the net! Monday night saw the Ilicitanos travel to Nino’s hometown of Vera in Almeria Province for a special match (pictured below) in honour of him, and they came away with a six-nil victory. Sory and Ivan Calero got two apiece, with the other strikes coming from Benja and Lola Pla. The Ilicitanos recorded a three-nil win at Aguilas on Wednesday, and this evening (Friday) they travel to La Nucia for an 8.00 pm kick-off, and next Wednesday, they are away to Lorca Deportiva.

Copa Del Hope

Bailed Out

CD Montesinos, who were promoted to the Valencia Primera regional division group eight earlier in the year, have decided to launch a B team that will play in the Segunda regional. Club President Felipe Paredes said that the club were reacting to concerns that last season’s youth players, who just missed out on promotion, needed to be part of a new team which would allow them to progress further, rather than having to go to other sides outside of Montesinos. “We have a good group of young players who are not yet ready to walk into the first team”, commented Parades. “They will only improve and mature if they are playing regular football, and together with the committee, I feel certain that we have done the right thing”. “I am sure that this will lay a foundation for us to be able to grow and not to have to rely on too many players from outside Los Montesinos”, he added. Pre-season training started on Wednesday for the first team, with the club still looking for any other players to join the B squad. Contact can be made with CD Montesinos via the supporters club, thefullmonte2011@hotmail.com The club are also looking for sponsors for their home fixtures and man of the match awards, with more details also available via e-mail address above.

The suspended president of the Spanish football federation and his son left jail earlier this week, a day after being granted bail. Angel Maria Villar (pictured) and his son, Gorka Villar, left the Soto de Real prison on Tuesday. They had spent 12 days in custody since a court remanded them in custody while investigators continued their probe into alleged corruption. Angel Maria Villar told journalists that he wanted “to thank all those who had privately and publicly believed in me, in Mr Juan Padron, and my son”. “They have defended us both in public and private,” Villar said in his first statement since being arrested on July 18th. Judge Santiago Pedraz granted them and another soccer official bail on Monday after having initially denied them bail on July 20th citing flight risks. Judge Pedraz set bail for Angel Maria Villar and suspended federation vice president Juan Padron at 300 thousand euro and for Gorka Villar at 150,000 euro. The judge also confiscated their passports and ordered that the three suspects make weekly appearances at the court and provide a phone number to reach them at all times.

Elche will play the Barcelona-based side Badalona twice in the space of three days as the Ilicitanos have been drawn against them in this month’s first elimination round of the Copa del Rey. The tie will be played in Catalunya on Wednesday August 30th, with Elche having entertained Badalona on the previous Sunday in their first home fixture of the Segunda Division B season. If the Ilicitanos are victorious, then would be at home on Wednesday September 6th to the winners of the tie between Gimnástica Torrelavega and Cultural Durango.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo refused to speak to reporters after testifying in court on Monday over his tax fraud case involving around 14 million euro. Although the Portuguese striker entered the Madrid area courthouse via the back door to avoid the press, it had been agreed that he would give a statement after the hearing. But when Ronaldo exited the building two hours later, he declined to make any comment, amidst some booing from the crowds that had gathered. In a written press release issued later, Ronaldo said: “I've never tried to hide anything or avoid paying taxes; the Spanish tax office is aware of every detail of my income because we have sent them everything to do with it.” “I always make my tax declarations voluntarily and willingly, because I believe that we should all declare and pay our taxes in accordance with our earnings. Those who know me know exactly what I ask of my accountants: to keep everything up to date and correctly paid, because I don't want any problems.” “I am currently paying tax and Social Security in Spain, and am one of the individuals who pays among the highest amount of tax in the country. If my name was not 'Cristiano Ronaldo', I wouldn't have even been in court. I will make no further comment on the subject.” Ronaldo, who represented himself with a solicitor, told the judge that his conscience was clear and he was satisfied that his actions had all been above board. He is accused of four counts of tax evasion between the years 2011 and 2014, based upon his 'image rights' – or royalties for his face and name being used in advertising – since he moved to Spain in 2010 for the start of his career with Real Madrid. The ceding of his royalties to a company he had set up started in 2004, not in 2010, Ronaldo told the judge. No 'special fiscal structure' had been set up since his move to Spain to cover his taxes, but he had continued with that created six years earlier when he played for Manchester United. “The solicitors recommended to me by Manchester United created the company in my name in 2004 – a long time before I had even thought I would be moving to Spain,” he explained to the court. “This type of structure is very common and above board in the UK, and was checked out by the British tax authorities, who confirmed it was completely legal.” “The same taxpaying structure set up for my time in the UK between 2004 and 2009 has been used ever since, between 2010 and 2014.” “Only two differences featured: the UK domicile of the company was removed, since it is not necessary unless you live in Britain; and I chose to be paid my full royalties personally whilst I was resident in Spain, to enable me to pay Spanish taxes.” “Neither of these changes was aimed at avoiding taxes or hiding income, and from the year 2015, I ceded my royalties to an independent third party and paid my taxes via said party.” The discrepancy, according to Ronaldo, is whether his royalties should have been paid annually between 2010 and 2014, when he was considered non-resident or a temporary expatriate, or whether they should have been paid as a lump sum, which is what the player did in 2014. As a result, the player explained, any unpaid tax would have resulted from the 'time lag' and the tax office's having considered, retroactively, that he was resident for tax purposes in Spain rather than in the UK prior to 2014.

The 2017/18 EFL Championship starts tonight with two fixtures, as Derby County travel to relegated Sunderland, whilst Nottingham Forest entertain Millwall at the City Ground (full fixture list on the right). There is nothing to suggest that Sunderland have enough quality to ensure an instant return to the Premier League, whilst Derby County seem to be weaker than last time around with Will Hughes among those to have left. But they have a good new coach in Gary Rowett (pictured top), disgracefully treated at Birmingham , with the plus of new signings Curtis Davies and Tom Huddlestone improving the spine of his side. Millwall’s squad looks light on quality and it appears they are in a for a struggle, which is what Nottingham Forest had to contend with last year, as off the field problems with the club owner raised the temperature of the fans. Middlesborough look like serious contenders after being relegated from the Premier League, splurging £30m-plus on three strikers after scoring a paltry 27 league goals last season. On paper, only Aston Villa have a squad to rival Boro. After failing to meet expectations last term, Steve Bruce has parachuted in 131 years’ worth of experience in the form of John Terry, Chris Samba, Glenn Whelan and Ahmed Elmohamady. The West Midlands could have an increased Premier League presence next year, with Wolves and Birmingham City also determined to mount a promotion challenge. Wolves have sprayed cash around, leading their former manager Mick McCarthy to describe their summer spending as “outrageous”. At St Andrew’s, Harry Redknapp has not done quite as much business as he would have liked, with the Barnsley defender Marc Roberts and goalkeeper David Stockdale the notable additions, despite a number of high-profile players being linked. Jaap Stam signed a new two-year contract at Reading in the close season and with his immediate future sorted, the team who missed the Premier League on penalties have to be taken seriously. As for Fulham, their best business over the summer was retaining their playmaker and captain, Tom Cairney, and the teenager Ryan Sessegnon. The annual Hull City exodus has left the ex-Russian national manager Leonid Slutsby with a rebuilding job, whilst Norwich have appointed Daniel Farke in the hope the German can rejuvenate a side that had become stale under Alex Neil. The Steel City derby is back on the menu and it is not only Wednesday who could impress. Sheffield United hit the 100-point mark to win the League One title and Chris Wilder has strengthened a capable squad. Leeds United could again go close, whilst Cardiff City will be quietly confident about what may be possible under Neil Warnock. Barnsley will be expected to struggle along with Bolton Wanderers, and pre-season has not gone too well for Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town. It’s difficult to see Brentford, Bristol City or QPR doing much to ruffle the feathers at the top. As for Burton Albion, Stephen Warnock and Jake Buxton, who arrive from Wigan, add plenty of knowhow to their backline but Nigel Clough will need to work wonders again to ensure they escape the drop.

KLITSCH LEGENDS SWANSONG QUITS

Former heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko has retired from boxing - ruling out a rematch with Britain's Anthony Joshua. The Ukrainian, 41, was knocked out in the 11th round by current champion Joshua at Wembley Stadium in April, with a proposed rematch pencilled in for November in Las Vegas. "I have achieved everything I dreamed of, and now I want to start my second career after sports," said Klitschko.

ASHES SAVED

The World Athletics Championships start today at London’s Olympic Park, bringing back memories of London 2012, with the hope that home advantage will bring an impressive medal tally for the UK athletes. It will also act as pretty much a track farewell to two of the sport’s all-time greats, namely Usain Bolt, and Mo Farrah. The legendary Jamaican sprinter Bolt starts the countdown to his retirement in the men’s 100m heats (8.00 pm live on BBC 2). It will be his swan song after a glittering career, and Bolt is expected to bow out in style. The eight-times Olympic champion is at home in the capital having defended his 100m and 200m Olympic titles in London five years ago. This time he will look to retain retain the 100mand 4x100m

golds he won in Beijing two years ago. He will not defend his 200m crown. Sir Mo Farah is perhaps the greatest distance runner of alltime is looking to win double gold at the highest level for a fifth time. Having won both the 10,000m and 5,000m events at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and the 2013 and 2015 World Athletics Championships he is already in a class of his own and he can cement his legendary status by doing it a final time. Farah plans to quit the track this year and move to road races, meaning this will likely be his last major event. If he delivers in front of a home crowd as he did in 2012 it will be among the moments of the Championships, which features the 10,000 m final tonight (10.20 pm, live on BBC 1).

SHIELD BATTLE AWAITS

A deal has been agreed "in principle" by Australia's players to resolve a long-running pay dispute that could have threatened this winter's Ashes series against England. Cricket Australia says a deal was struck with the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) on Thursday. The Test tour of Bangladesh starting this month is now expected to go ahead.

Arsenal and Chelsea resume their rivalry at Wembley on Sunday as the FA Cup winners and Premier League champions battle for more silverware in the FA Community Shield (kick-off 3.00pm, live on BT Sport 1). Arsene Wenger’s Gunners got the better of Antonio Conte’s Blues on the hallowed turf as they shocked the title winners with a 2-1 FA Cup Final victory. The two capital clubs have played each other since then a pre-season friendly which Chelsea won 3-0 in China - but the Community Shield will be a real test of both sides with the 2017-18 season fast approaching. While Sunday's match may be a charity friendly, Wenger

and Conte will expect their teams to give no quarter as they look to begin the new campaign with full bragging rights. Francis Coquelin is out while Shkodran Mustafi remains a doubt for the Gunners, so Wenger may be tempted to shuffle his three-man defence after experimenting with the likes of Mohamed Elneny at centre-back. Chelsea coach Conte is concerned with a lack of options despite bringing in Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger for big money. Alvaro Morata should start against Arsenal, but may be deployed on the left of a front three with Eden Hazard still recovering from a broken ankle.
