AT A STANDSTILL

pain’s Public Works Ministry has stopped Torrevieja council from putting up signs on the N-332 highway calling for the road to be upgraded to a dualcarriageway, as development plans continue to be stalled, and major delays on the road continue to cause frustration for motorists. Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón said last month that the authority was seeking permssion from Madrid for six signs to be erected on the road which would tell long-suffering drivers why the problems were happening. Dolón revealed this week that the idea had been blocked, but he still plans to put up signs around the municipality, as well as announcing that an internet petition had been launched to lobby the Madrid govern-

ment over the delayed project. The mayor said that the council were still waiting for a reply from Public Works Minister Íñigo de la Serna over what is going happen to the N-332 in Torrevieja. "The indifference with which the minister is dealing with this matter is damaging the image and interest of the

city”, added Dolón. “It’s a barrier to our economic, tourist and social development”. The mayor revealed that he wants de la Serna to come to Torrevieja to “personally check out the negative impact that the stalled project is having on the city”. The whole issue of the

dual carriageway has now become a war of words between Madrid and the Valencian regional government, with the administrations saying that the plans for the project and environmental modifications are each others responsibility, with Torrevieja council caught in the middle.

uardia Civil checkpoints are being stepped this weekend in the latest of a set of special operations to keep the roads of Alicante Province and the Murcia region safe during the summer peak season. As of today (Friday August 11th) through to Tuesday, there will be extra vigilance taken against drink drivers and motorists who have taken drugs. The campaign is motivated by the increased number of parties that are held over the next few days during the holiday season, as well as this Tuesday being a nation-

al Bank Holiday, which in effect creates a long weekend for many people.

The Guardia’s summer campaign will continue with a special push against

speeding motorists from Monday August 21st, prior to the end ‘return’ operation.

Three Ukrainian men, all aged in their forties, who stole high-end cars in Spain, as well as in Italy and the Ukraine, have been arrested in the Alicante area. The robbers were detained by the Guardia Civil in El Campello, after a resident spotted them acting suspiciously in a car park, as they were eyeing up a Toyota Rav car, and had eventually opened it. Officers discovered a wide

range of electronic equipment in their possession including magnetic keys to get into cars. 30 pieces of gear would cover different manufacturers with Guardia officers seizing a 60 thousand euro BMW, with the men also said to be responsible for stealing a one-yearold Lexus hybrid car. The gang would stay in apartments in Spain and other countries pretending to be tourists.

Hot And Bothered Around 200 people protested outside Orihuela's Playa Flamenca Town Hall building last Friday calling for better services for the Orihuela Costa, and then gave the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, a rough ride. The demonstration was organised by the Movimiento Ciudadano La Zenia representing local businesses and residents, and inside the hall later, the protestors were addressed by Bascuñana, who was involved with some angry exchanges with his audience. Movimiento president Félix Arenas told the meeting that the Orihuela Costa needed a 20 percent budget rise to deal with the lack of maintenance for roads, parks, and beaches. Elche’s Big Nit

The Night of the Dawn, or as often described in the Valencian language as Nit de l’Alba, will be once again lighting up Elche’s skies this Sunday. The annual spectacular, celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (a national red day holiday on Tuesday), dates back to the

Middle Ages, where families used to make offerings to the Virgin by way of a rocket launched for each of their respective children. That tradition has now turned into the setting off of hundreds of palm-formed fireworks that are launched in a coordinated fashion from different points of the

city, as well as people setting off their own individual fireworks. Electricity in the Elche city centre area will be cut just before midnight, with three thousand rockets set to be launched from the bell tower of the Santa Maria Basilica at the stroke of twelve.

Water And More

Formentera del Segura is to see three million euro spent on improving the municipality’s drinking water supply, with water company Hidraqua seeing its franchise for the area extended to 10 years, in a move similar to that announced

recently by neighbouring Rojales. The work in the Vega Baja town will be conducted in several phases to deal with water losses and supply cuts due to old pipes in the town as well as in Los Palacios.

An additional fire hydrants are to be erected, and a number of streets will see pavements extended and improved as pictured in an impression of what Calle Federico García Lorca will look like after the work is completed.

Rummage Plea

Unhappy Locals Residents in part of San Miguel de Salinas say that some public land resembles like a jungle, as they’ve slammed the council for not doing enough cleaning and maintenance work. People living in the Blue Lagoon and El Galán area of the municipality have told the Diario de la Vega website that road cleaning is barely happening whilst they’ve cited land off Calle Sevilla for special criticism over they claim is neglect. Other comments include the fact that pavements are full of weeds and that road sweepers are seldom seen in areas like Calle Pozoblanco.

Safe And Sound Torrevieja’s lifeguards responded to over eleven hundred incidents last month, including 56 water rescues, according to figures provided by Torrevieja council. Beaches councillor Javier Manzanares said that July saw 406 people treated for a variety of different injuries at the lifeguard huts; 360 for jellyfish stings; 46 for insect stings; and 22 for sunburn, whilst there were 35 cases of lost children. In the coastal area of the Murcia region, the annual Plan Copla covering 74 beaches has seen lifeguards involved in nearly 24 thousand incidents right across the Costa Calida over the first two months of the high season. Meanwhile a Portuguese family who ignored warning signs on Guardamar’s Playa

A Guardia Civil officer had to be taken to hospital after a motorcyclist knocked him over at a Murcia region checkpoint on Sunday morning. The incident happened at the Las Cumbres service station on the A-30, with the officer carrying out routine stops to check alcohol and drug levels. Tipsy Driver

Passengers on a coach heading from Madrid to the Murcia region called in the Guardia Civil when they suspected their driver of being intoxicated. The coach belonging to the Alsa company was travelling to Murcia City, La Manga, and Mazarrón, with passengers noticing towards the start of the journey that the vehicle was veering all over the place on the

motorway. Several travellers got in touch with Alsa, as well as the Guardia, and they persuaded the driver to get off the motorway, and he turned onto an industrial estate in Villarejo de Salvanés some 45 kilometres south of Madrid. In boiling hot temperatures of around 40 degrees, and without any refreshments including water, they had to wait hours for Alsa to send a

replacement driver, whilst the Guardia Civil carted off the original man behind the wheel, after a breath test proved to be positive. A number of the passengers told the La Verdad newspaper that Alsa did not believe their complaints that the driver was drunk and are considering legal action for compensation against the company.

Porn Swoop A British teacher has been arrested in Valladolid in central Spain on suspicion of distributing child pornography over the Internet, after an Interpol tip-off. The suspect, from Manchester, was held in an international operation that originated in Canada. The National Police said the man had secretly filmed his students and shared images, 'with clear sexual connotations' over the Internet with other paedophiles. Canadian authorities discovered a Spanish-based email

address used to distribute

the obscene images.

Camp Concerns

Crook Caught

A Sunday afternoon car chase through the streets of Benidorm’s Rincón de Loix area saw a violent robber try to escape from local police officers, who fired shots at his car to stop him getting away. He was eventually

arrested at around two o’clock, having hit a patrol car and rammed two police bikes, with the officers thrown into the air. The man, who had a catalogue of previous charges against him, had stolen the vehicle he was

using from a depot in Altea in a violent theft, and had then committed a robbery in the Rincón de Loix area, which then saw the Benidorm police operation kick in. No further details of the man including his nationality were made public.

Killer Fall A 26-year-old British tourist, Callum Marriot, died after falling through the skylight of a 13-storey building in Ibiza on Sunday morning. Callum was staying in the Tanit apartment and condo building in the San Antonio resort, and his body was found at 4.15 am. He had apparently lost the keys to his apartment and had been trying to get in via a patio window. He had been due to fly back home with five friends later in the day, one of whom had to identify Callum’s body.

Around a hundred residents at La Manga’s Camping Villas Caravaning site held a protest on Sunday over the lack of maintenance of the site. They say the new owner of the complex, Capfun, who own sites across Europe, have neglected cleaning and safety work in recent

months, as well as the fact that unauthorised vehicles are coming onto the site amongst concerns over security. Protest leader Juan Gómez said that people who stay at the facility were not going to see it run down. On the other hand, site manager María del Mar Martínez said

that it was baffling as to why a protest had staged. “We only had a meeting with the residents last week,” del Mar Martinez commented. “We hired a crew to do some garden work on the back of that, and services and security are working well”.

No Worries Plans for several high-rise buildings in Punta Prima, which would be at least ten storeys high, have been given the green light by Torrevieja council's governing board. The planning process was paused in June due to concerns over the impact to an important historical Civil War bomb shelter. Councillor Fanny Serrano said that a survey showed that there would no problems caused to the shelter, and that the planning process for the ten thousand square

metre site would now be put

before the full council.

Safe Cycling

The Valencian Government has produced a plan to improve safety for cyclists across the region in a year which has seen eight of them lose their lives in accidents. The plan presented by

regional President Ximo Puig (pictured) includes a major road safety advertising campaign as part of preventative measures to cut down on the number of incidents. Long term goals include better signing and more

cycle lanes, but how far all of this will go to cut down deaths is hard to quantify, as this year's fatal accidents have mainly involved drivers at the weekend who were either intoxicated or had taken drugs.

Over And Out

An archivist has been fired some seven months after it first emerged that the Valencia Provincial Council employee had not been to work for a decade, since the first day he was taken on. As reported by The Courier back in February, Carles Recio joined the authority in 2006

in the archiving research department, but has never had a desk, computer or any known function. His annual salary was around 50 thousand euro. The archive manager MarĂa JosĂŠ Gil, has also been hit with disciplinary action, although as yet no firm decision has been made about her fate.

She is said to have known about and agreed to Recio's 10-year absence, but it appears she will not be fired. Recio is currently signed off sick, but given that his decade of not going to work is not thought to relate to illness, his present situation did not prevent his dismissal.

Holiday Hang Up

Less than than 35 percent of Spaniards "switch off' from work when they are on holiday, according to separate studies carried out by recruitment agencies Adecco and Randstad. The figures in effect suggest that two-thirds of the country is still somehow "working" whilst on holiday. The inability to "switch-off" hits all ages, and both men and women, though the

worst offenders are said to be males aged under 25 who actually seem to be concerned about their breaks being too long. A third study, by researchers Grant Thornton, claims that 60 percent of Spaniards who own companies or are self-employed are unable to switch off whilst on holiday, whilst 30 percent don't see anything wrong with that.

No Blackmail

Spain’s not going to make Gibraltar an issue in the Brexit talks, that is according to foreign minister, Alfonso Dastis. In a newspaper interview, Dastis said he didn't want to "jeopardise" the deal by demanding that Gibraltar change its status -- a stance that Britain would likely never accept".

"I won't make an agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom conditional on recovering sovereignty over Gibraltar," he said. He added that Spain's proposal of joint sovereignty over the Rock, which would see people in Gibraltar get Spanish nationality on top of the British one, still stood.

Kitten Concerns

Two pony stallions –one skeletal and near starving, the other with severe back wounds – are now recovering at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. With the arrival of the two ponies, the Rojales-based sanctuary has now assisted police with three rescues in the past month alone after a young donkey was also rescued in midJuly. Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding are concerned about the escalating costs of caring for the 107 rescued equines now in their care, but couldn’t say no when contacted on July 27th by El Refugio del Burrito donkey rescue centre, which does not take ponies. “He was tied to a tree in Lorca, almost two hours south of us here at Rojales, and abandoned without any food or water,” Sue said. “We were told this poor pony would simply be left on the street if we did not take him. How could we ignore such a terrible case of suffering?”

The Pilar de la Horadada-based APAH charity says the latest incident saw a supermarket basket with five dehydrated kittens (pictured) aged around a month being dumped over the cattery fencing. The animals were terrified and their fur had been burnt after they had come into contact with a caustic substance. The charity says they are full to bursting in terms of room, but also in terms of having

They’ve called for domestic and feral adult cats to be neutered as this is the only realistic way of reducing the problems, adding that some owners are not acting responsibly in that regard. “It is not easy to control the level of feral cats”, says APAH, “… but many charities are willing to work with communities to try to keep the numbers down by helping trap feral adult cats. If members of communities work together to collect the money needed, charities would be able to help them keep the cat population down.”

PM Rajoy’s Happy Holiday Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy may be on his summer holidays in the Pontevedra area of Spain, but he still took time out to talk to journalists, saying that recent economic statistics for the country were “excellent” and made a prediction over employment rates. Rajoy expressed great satisfaction with last month’s unemployment and predicted that, “if we keep going like this”, it would be possible to achieve the figure of 20 million people in employment a year ahead of the original projections. “I believe that, if we keep going like this – but a prudent approach is always advisable – we can achieve it in 2019,” he said. Rajoy added that this “excellent data” follows on from all the other positive results achieved during the year. He went on to say that the increase in permanent employment and in contracts for people “who have been unemployed for a long time,” together with the growing number of young people finding a job, which “is four times higher than the rest,” are especially “significant”.

An expanded and revamped duty free shop at San Javier airport has recently been pressed into business. The outlet is owned by the Swiss company Dufry, who

There are different reasons why dogs display inappropriate urination. If your dog is a puppy, then house training might not be complete yet. House training can take a while, and you might need to revisit the steps. If your dog is definitely house trained and the inappropriate urination started well after house training was complete, then there are other potential reasons. First and foremost, it is essential to rule out a health problem before you look into a behavioural problem. Urinary Tract If your dog suddenly starts peeing in the house then it could be a urinary tract infection. Most likely, your vet will want a urine sample from your dog in order to perform a test called a urinalysis, which is done to look for bacteria and abnormal cells in the urine. If an infection is detected, then antibiotics will be given. Other possible urinary issues that might be found include cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), crystals in the urine and/or bladder stones. Most urinary issues can be treated with medications, supplements and/or diet changes. However, bladder stones sometimes require surgery. Incontinence Urinary incontinence is often seen as dogs reach their senior years, but some get it young. It’s usually seen as urine leaking or dribbling on and off. Whilst some dogs leave puddles in their beds or the floor during rest or naps. Dogs who consciously pee large quantities in inappropriate areas are probably not incontinent. The problem can often be treated with medication, and some owners lay out absorbent pads. Other Health Issues Health problems like kidney diseases, Cushing’s disease, diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, and more can all lead to urinary issues. Your vet may recommend additional testing to rule out one or more of these diseases depending on your dog's other symptoms, if any. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. Age Old age can bring on other causes for urinary accidents. Forms of dementia or senility can occur in aging dogs, leading to house soiling. These dogs simply forget their house

KITTENS APAH has lots of kittens, including five tiny kittens who were dumped at their cattery in a supermarket shopping basket. Some of the kittens are ready for homing, whilst some are too young yet, but can be reserved for you when they are ready to leave. training or even where they are. Kidney failure also tends to crop up in old age, and in some cases, dementia can be treated with medications and supplements. Behavioural Problems Once health issues have been ruled out, you pretty much know you are dealing with a behavioural problem. Some dogs (especially males) exhibit marking behaviour even after being altered. Or, your dog might be exhibiting subsmissive/excitement urination. Examine the situation in your home: have you got a new pet? Has someone in the home left or passed away? Dogs are more affected by these things that many people realise. What can you do? Repeat the steps of house training. Also, try to figure out if there is something stressful that’s appeared in your dog's environment. Eliminate it if possible, or teach your dog to live with it, and even consider getting a dog trainer or behaviourist involved.

Woman’s I.D. Riddle

Tumbling Melons Melon prices have collapsed by 40 percent this year in Alicante Province due to overproduction. Yellow melons come in at a basic cost of 15 cents compared to 25 cents a year earlier, with the ASAJA farmers association saying that local producers are barely covering costs. Competing regions like Castilla La Mancha have contributed to the problem, along with a reduced demand for melons from European countries.

Toddler Drama

Authorities are trying to discover the identity of a woman who fell off a sevenmetre wall at Alicante's Santa Bárbara castle on Friday. The victim is said to be around 30-years-old, and fell from the Benacantil wing of the castle shortly before 9.00 pm on Friday evening. Up to going to press, reports said that she has been mainly unconscious, having been sedated, with multiple fractures but not in

a life-threatening condition. Her sedation meant she was unable to give details of her identity. She was not carrying any ID documents and only her mobile phone, and nobody has contacted Alicante General Hospital to make any enquiries about her. The police have been going through her mobile phone to see if they can reach someone who can help. During some brief

moments, when asked about the incident, she says she cannot remember anything. Police believe the fall was an accident, but are keen to find out her identity so a friend or family member can be contacted. Emergency services were called by other visitors who had to climb down on foot to where she lay, as it was very difficult to reach, and strap her to a stretcher to be carried up again.

A 14-month-old British baby was revived by Guardia Civil officers and paramedics after falling into his family's swimming pool at their Northern Costa Blanca villa.

The incident happened in Javea on Monday morning on an urbanisation close to Arenal beach, with the youngster being taken to hospital in Valencia City, which has a specialist paedi-

atric unit. His initial condition was described as critical, with reports suggesting that the child may have fallen into the pool after a security alert device failed to work.

Keep It Steady Journey’s End

Fire-fighters were called to a northern Spanish hospital to help free a man from his penis ring, after doctors were unable to detach the toy from his manhood. The unnamed individual was rushed to the Hospital Arquitecto Marcid, in the

early hours of Sunday morning, according to the La Voz de Galicia newspaper. He told medics he was unable to remove the metal ring from his penis, but the doctors did not have the tools to do the job, and so they called in the local fire

brigade. Two fire-fighters from Ferrol responded to the summons and arrived with a small circular saw, and they carefully removed the previously immovable object from the man, freeing him in the process.

The National Police detained 19 North African migrants earlier this week who were hiding in fairground lorries after a funfair in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta. Like a scene from a Scooby Doo cartoon, the police with thermal imaging equipment and sniffer dogs found them hiding amongst

bumper cars and a ghost train, waiting to board a ferry to mainland Spain. Most of the group were Moroccans, the others Algerian. They included nine children. Police also clashed with about 1,000 migrants at the Ceuta-Morocco border. Ceuta and Melilla - both small Spanish territories in

North Africa - have become magnets for African migrants hoping to reach Spain. Most are fleeing poverty and violence in sub-Saharan Africa - but many are not from war zones. In the latest clash, migrants threw stones and sticks at police who stopped them before they could scale the Ceuta border fence.

I am moving my office about and the new position of my computer means that it is quite a way away from my router. I don’t really want to trail a 10 metre cable around the office so I was thinking of installing a Bluetooth device. Is Bluetooth that reliable or is it better to Hard wire my computer and put up with the messy cable?

Hi Richard, I now have a new laptop and one day I will need to dispose of my old tower PC. From a security point of view can I successfully delete everything on it, or do I have to take it to a professional technician to delete the contents?

Hi Paul, thanks for the question, in fact the answer is that it’s a wireless dongle Hi Mary, it’s a good question – as you have probably heard simply deleting the that you need, not a Bluetooth device and yes it will be fine as, from your contents of your personal information will not destroy it, it still remains easily description it’s going to be very close to the router. Of course, it’s ALWAYS betrecoverable from your computer until such a time as its overwritten by more ter use a cable as there is no doubt of interference, but it’s not necessary, you just need information. There are a number of companies that will be able to offer you data wiping a wireless dongle (or a wireless network interface card as you have a PC) and it will do services, BlueMoon Solutions is one of them, however if you are wanting to be 100% sure yourself that your information has been destroyed then probably one of the most the trick. effective ways is to remove the hard drive and physically destroy it – this also happens to be quite a satisfying way to kill your data!

Ketamine has 'truly remarkable' effect on depression and is effective in elderly patients Ketamine can have a “truly remarkable” effect on people with depression, researchers have said after a new study showed promising results among elderly patients. Colleen Loo, a professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia, led the world’s first randomised control trial into the drug’s effect on people over 60 with treatment-resistant depression. “This trial has shown ketamine can be used safely in the elderly and it tends to be effective,” she said, adding that a similar effect was observed in this age group as in younger patients. It is important to test how people of different ages respond to a new treatment before it can be offered by doctors, she said: “Sometimes depression in the elderly can be harder to treat, especially with medication. “Also, they tend to have more medical problems, which can interfere with medication.” Ketamine was discovered in 1962 and is licenced for medical use in the UK as an

anaesthetic, but is also used illegally as a recreational drug. Of the study’s 16 participants, 11 reported an improvement in their condition while being treated with the drug, according to the research published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. After six months, 43 per cent of the subjects said they had no significant symptoms of depression – a high rate given that the participants had not responded to previous treatment, said Professor Loo. “It is truly remarkable the way ketamine can work,” she said. “Other people have also found you get a rapid and powerful effect after a single dose of ketamine.” “Some people mistakenly think we are inducing a temporary, drug-induced euphoria and people are ‘out of it’, which is why they’re not depressed. “But the effects take place in the first hour, and they’re not euphoric at all. In fact, all of our research participants disliked them. They considered them adverse effects. “The antidepressant effect

kicks in a few hours later and are maximised about 20 hours later, when you’re fully alert and in your usual state of mind.” While research into the use of ketamine to treat mental health problems is still in its early stages, scientists at Oxford University have said their studies show the drug can provide relief to patients with severe depression “where nothing has helped

before”. Rupert McShane, the consultant psychiatrist who is leading Oxford’s ketamine treatment programme, said it was “good to see that, contrary to some reports, some older people do respond to ketamine.” “This study highlights that ketamine can be given in a variety of ways (not just intravenous), that it’s a good idea to adjust the dose, and

that the more resistant someone’s depression is, the higher the dose that they are likely to need,” he said. Professor Loo and her colleagues delivered ketamine to the patients using a small injection under the skin – similar to the insulin jabs given to diabetes patients. This makes the drug easier and quicker to administer than the intravenous infusions used in other trials, which require a machine pump to regulate the dose and takes up to an hour to complete. Participants received increasing doses of ketamine over a period of five weeks, with the dose personalised for each patient. However, she warned that while the research is one step closer to providing a model for how doctors could prescribe ketamine as a treatment for depression in future, it would still be “premature to jump into clinical practice”. “There are ‘super-responders’, who after a single treatment can be well for several months,” said Professor Loo, giving the example of a subject who, in

2014, remained free of depressive symptoms for five months after just one dose of ketamine. But “most people are well but then they relapse over around three to seven days,” she said. “That’s where repeated dosing comes in.” It is estimated around three per cent of the UK population, or nearly two million people, suffer from depression. A small proportion of this group – around 158,000 people in total – have very severe depression that is resistant to existing treatments, studies have shown. Professor Loo and her colleagues at the Black Dog Institute in Sydney are also conducting a large-scale trial into the effects of ketamine on treatment-resistant depression. “These results are a promising early piece of the puzzle, but the risks of ketamine use are still not wholly understood. Future studies with greater sample sizes are needed to formally assess ketamine's side effects, such as its impact on liver function."

Could discovery of 'fat switch' cure obesity? "Obesity cure possible after discovery of fat 'switch'," is the somewhat premature newspaper headline. Researchers have identified a "biological switch" that controls when fat cells convert fat into energy for the body. But the headline fails to make it clear that this discovery was in mice, not humans. Current thinking is that fat cells start off as "beige", where they're essentially in a neutral state. They can then be converted into either white or brown fat cells. White fat cells store energy and can contribute towards obesity. Brown fat cells are primed to burn energy by warming the body.

It's possible for white fat cells to be converted into brown fat cells – by fasting,

for example – in a process known as browning. In some cases, brown fat cells can

switch back to being white fat cells again. This study looked at this

process in mice and found a mechanism that controls this switch. It involved an

area of the brain called the hypothalamus and a protein called TCPTP, which acts on insulin receptors. Researchers found the switch was stuck in obese mice and they were in energy-storing mode all the time, promoting weight gain. But we don't yet know if the switch would be the same in humans, and to what extent it contributes to obesity. Interfering with neural pathways in the brain could have unintended consequences, so any drugs developed to target the process would need thorough testing to make sure they're safe. The best way to a healthy weight is to stay active and eat a balanced diet.

Are you still using your microwave? You may believe that microwaves were purposely invented to make cooking easier and faster. But that’s not the case. Microwaves were discovered accidentally by scientists working on the magnetron, a device that creates microwave. While experimenting with the magnetron, one of the scientists realised that the chocolate bar in his pocket had melted. And many years later the magnetron would wound up inside the microwave oven. Microwaves are a kind of electromagnetic wave similar to UV rays or X-rays. Microwaves do not heat food like regular ovens that produce external heat. Instead, microwaves generate heat from inside the food. And they do this by bouncing off (vibrating) the water contained in the food

many million cycles every second to create friction that heats the food. The result is that heat is generated inside the food and this severely damages the nutrients in food. Microwaves cause a significant reduction in the nutrient content of foods.

A study in the Nov 2003 edition of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, found that microwaving broccoli reduced its antioxidant content by 97% as against a loss of 11% when cooked traditionally. Another published study

in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry showed that microwaving raw foods such as pork, beef reduces Vitamin B12 by 40%. Other studies also confirm that microwaves reduce many nutrients by up to 90%. The radiation from

microwaves also poses a health risk to the body. Dr Magda Havas, a scientist at Trent University, Ontario demonstrated that microwaves alter heart rate and ECG patterns. Microwaves are typically used to heat plastic containers with food, and there

is evidence Bisphenol A, a toxic ingredient of plastics, leaks into microwaved food. Bisphenol A has been linked to cancer, obesity and diabetes. Food cooked with proper heat taste better than microwaved food and scientists believe the damage microwaves cause to nutrients may explain why. There are some alternatives to microwaves. Halogen ovens may be an alternative to microwaves as the warm meals very quickly using halogen bulbs.

More older adults 'may benefit from taking statins,' study reports "Nearly all men over 60 and women over 75 eligible for statins, analysis suggests," The Guardian reports. This is the finding of a study that aimed to see how

many people in England would qualify for statin use if the 2014 NICE guidelines for statin therapy in adults were followed. Statins are drugs designed to lower choles-

terol, and in turn reduce the risk of a person developing a cardiovascular disease (CVD). The drugs are crucial for preventing another event occurring in people who already have CVD.

In 2014, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) produced guidelines that recommended that statins should also be prescribed for people with a 10% risk of developing CVD in the next 10 years. The health watchdog selected a risk assessment tool called QRISK2 to estimate a person's risk of CVD based on a number of factors, such as body mass index (BMI), smoking history and whether family members had developed CVD.

This study cross-checked the NICE guidelines on statins with data from the 2011 Health Survey for England. It found all men over 70 and all women aged 65-75 could potentially be offered statins based on the CVD risk associated with their age alone, regardless of how healthy they were. Currently, around four million people are being treated with statins, so this would mean treating an extra seven million people.

It's not clear whether this would add to the NHS budget or actually save money in the long term by reducing the number of people who go on to develop CVD. If you're concerned about your CVD risk, talk to your GP about the pros and cons of treatment. Other ways to reduce your risk of CVD include stopping smoking, being more active, drinking less alcohol, eating more healthily, and achieving or maintaining a healthy weight.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Top picks for visitors are the markets on Leidesplein and Museumplein, where villages of wooden chalets await, with hearty festive food and hand-warming drinks. Sample the go-to snack for the occasion: olibollen (Dutch doughnuts). Don’t worry about how healthy they aren’t – oliebolen do you good as they ward off evil spirits, apparently, and there's ice skating to burn them off anyway! Make sure you check out the Amsterdam Light Festival if you're visiting between December 1st and January 21st to see the sky above city's canals lit up like the Northern Lights. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Jodi Whittaker is the star turn in a new BBC 1 August drama pot-boiler for a Tuesday night called Trust Me, with I’m sure a number of people tuning in to check out the new Doctor Who, assuming they hadn’t already see Whitaker in shows like Broadchurch. They would not have been disappointed in that regard. So dominating was Whitaker as she put on a wonderful display of all kinds of emotion (I reckon she was on for 95 percent of the hour), that it allowed a certain amount of papering over the cracks in a rather silly tale of a nurse who pretends to be a doctor. Whittaker is a nurse called Cath who is given a rough ride by her Sheffield hospital bosses as she blows the whistle over the way patients are treated. She gets suspended, but by an interesting twist of fate, a doctor friend of hers just happens to be emigrating to New Zealand, and so she pinches her CV out of waste bin and applies for a doctor’s position at an ED in Edinburgh.

Jodi’s Doctor Role

Part of the fun of this daft, yet strangely enjoyed drama, is to pick all the holes in the plot like just one person giving her the job in Scotland and working out how she managed to open up a bank account without any proper identification, etc, etc. That’s in addition to her new colleagues not sussing out that she’s a fake. Add to that mix an estranged husband plus a kid that’s sure to blurt out her real name in addition to a journalist (with dodgy standards!) wanting to investigate Cath’s Sheffield hospital allegations, and we have a crackpot show that still is engaging, down to Jodi Whitaker’s acting ability. We all know that it will end in tears (I’m prepared to be pleasantly surprised if it isn’t), and of course there have been genuine cases of people pretending to be medics both in the UK and in America. Without Whittaker I don’t think I would have checked this out, and as a Broadchurch and Doctor Who fan, there’s further evidence on display

right now that she will be great as the Time Lord. On a technical note, why did Trust Me get transmitted in an excessive widescreen movie format, where a third of the picture was missing? Bizarre. 20 years after her death, Princess Diana is still great box office. Just ask Channel Four, where on an August Sunday evening they got their biggest rating of the year for Diana:In Her Own Words. The hype over the “secret videos” I’m sure boosted the interest for this no-holds barred documentary, but the fact the tapes were screened years ago in the States, and just showed Diana to be a likeable person with a sense of fun, deflected from the real dynamite of this programme. The tapes only accounted for around a dozen minutes of nearly two hours of screen-time, with the big grenades lobbed at Charles and Camilla by some of Diana’s staff and friends, far more so than she did herself in the tapes. That was the kicker of what was a great

watch that in one foul swoop destroyed all the carefully choreographed public relations of recent years that has tried to get people used to the concept of Charles and Camilla as the next King and Queen. Contributors pulled no punches over the way Diana was treated and the dreadful behaviour she had to put up with, and the underlying sense that the establishment was worried and jealous over the connection she had made with the British

public. Good on Channel Four for commissioning this from award-winning director Kevin Sim, who ten years ago saw an identical project for the BBC which was strangely “shelved”. Despite the lack of UK success, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the BBC coverage of the World Athletics Championships in London, but with one massive criticism. What has gone wrong with the sound? Last Friday night’s success for Mo Farah in the 10 thousand

metres brought an almost inaudible commentary from Steve Cram and Brendan Foster, as they were drowned out by the crowd. The use of a basic lip-microphone (which shields commentators from external noise) which has been around for decades on TV and radio, has now given way in recent years to little microphones attached to headphones, and as proved last Friday, they are not fit for purpose. They call this the march of progress!

BBC One announces Britain’s Best Cook BBC One today have announced that it is launching a new cookery competition as Mary Berry leads the charge to find Britain’s Best Cook in a series presented by Claudia Winkleman. At a time when British cooking has never been more varied, inspiring or of such high quality, this series will test the real-life expertise of truly great home cooks and will celebrate the food people make for their loved ones every single day. Mary Berry is returning to her first love; with more than 75 cookery books to her name, her authority in the home kitchen is beyond question and she is the natural choice for the lead judge. Taking the reins as host is Claudia Winkleman. A search for a second judge is underway. They will be joining Mary to help hunt out those whose talents, until now, have been hidden away. Mary Berry says: “I am never more at home than when I have my judging hat on. This series is going to encourage proper home cooking which I have always championed and I cannot wait to start. Claudia, for me, is the icing on the cake.”

Claudia Winkleman says: “I am over the moon to be part of this show. Am slightly obsessed with Mary so will follow her around with my own moussaka for most of the filming. Apologies in advance.” Over eight episodes, the ten contestants will need to demonstrate skill under pressure and individual flair, as they’re asked to serve the most perfect version of dishes that define modern British home cooking as well as create their special take on well-loved classics. The judges will be looking for dishes that define a new benchmark of excellence, whether it’s roast beef with the perfect roast potatoes, an ingenious twist on chicken curry or an irresistible chocolate pudding.

MOTORISTS KEEN TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ELECTRIC VEHICLES “The time is right for electric cars - in fact the time is critical.”

A new study from automotive data experts hpi has revealed that consumers feel they don’t know enough about electric vehicles to tempt them to switch. The study*, carried out in conjunction with Leeds Beckett University, also reveals that over 95% of motorists would feel extremely safe when driving an electric vehicle. Over two thirds said they would be happy to buy a used EV vehicle. The insight follows the bold announcement that all new cars launched by Volvo from 2019 onwards will be partially or completely battery-powered. Between 2019 and 2021, Volvo will introduce five 100% EVs and ensure the rest of its conventional petrol and diesel range has a hybrid engine of some form. Fuel giant Shell has also announces a pilot project for the installation and operation of the first fast chargers for electric vehicles at selected Shell service stations. The project will include selected charging sites at Shell stations in the UK and in The Netherlands with fast chargers expected to be operational at all selected locations by the end of 2017. The first chargers are due to open in Greater London, Derby and the western part of the Netherlands (Randstad). Consumer interest in electric vehicles is soaring. The market for alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) saw a record market share of 4.4% in June with more than 10,700 hitting the roads, a rise of 29.0%. Yet while sales continue to soar many motorists admit to struggling to separate the reality from fiction when it comes to EVs. The study reveals that awareness of the range of EVs is low with a lack of knowledge about charging capabilities and longevity amongst almost three quarters (70%) of consumers. Over 60,000 new AFVs have joined Britain’s roads so far this year. The overall used market for electric vehicles has seen gains with residual values increasing by 7 percent this year. Fernando Garcia, Consumer Director, at hpi commented: “Alternative fuel vehicles including EVs and hybrids are growing in popularity year on year but the automotive industry needs to work with the Government to do more to convince people of the benefits and shoot down some of the myths. It’s apparent that consumers feel that they don’t have enough information about life with an electric vehicle. This represents a huge opportunity for the manufacturers to engage with motorists. It is therefore critical that the OEM dealer network is equipped to address the concerns of the consumer. “With the distances covered by the average motorist being relatively short, fully electric cars are well suited to the vast majority of regular journeys. Plug-in hybrids can also provide a good balance between range and efficiency plus the economic benefits for motorists can be enormous, offering big savings on fuel and tax costs as well as much lower maintenance costs.”

SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS HITS £5.5 MILLION IN THREE DAY SALE Preparations are already under way for the next Silverstone Auctions event, the Salon Privé Sale which takes place at Blenheim Palace on Saturday, 2nd September 2017.

A 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, once owned by Sir Elton John, was hammered away by Silverstone Auctions for £551,250 including premium in a £5.5 million sale at the Wing Building, Silverstone, during the Silverstone Classic Motor Racing Festival on 27th, 29th and 30th July. The bright red Ferrari wasn’t the only car to draw enthusiastic applause from the crowd, with a 1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 drawing gasps of awe as it raced past the £100,000 mark during a fierce bidding war, eventually selling for £114,750 including buyer’s premium to an online bidder from Australia. Despite an estimate of £70,000 - £85,000 before the sale, bidding for a rare 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL actually started at £95,000 and after a rapid-fire battle between room, phone and online bidders it eventually sold in the room for a final price of £137,250 including premium, almost doubling its lower estimate. A total of £5.5 million in sales across the three days of auctions was achieved, and 71% of the cars on offer in the two days of classic and sports car auctions went to new owners. “It was an incredibly successful weekend, and we’re thrilled with the results,” remarks Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions. “I’d like to thank our vendors and bidders for taking part in a fantastic sale, and I have to say our team did a fabulous job bringing such a quality selection of vehicles to auction on our biggest

weekend of the year at the Silverstone Classic.” Modern classics performed exceptionally well throughout the two day road car auction, helped by a number of remarkable low-mileage examples. A 1991 Vauxhall Lotus Carlton with only 4,500 miles on the clock beat its lower estimate by £12,000 to sell for £72,000 including premium, while a 2010 Ford Focus RS500 that had spent its entire life on show, covering only 206km from new, went for £54,000. Fast Fords were popular across both days of the road car sale with an iconic 1987 Ford Capri 280 Brooklands powering past its lower estimate by more than £20,000 on day one to sell for £55,125 including premium. A 1973 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico drew enthusiastic bidding to push its price to £34,313 on the second day of the road car sale. Still in the modern classics category, the Lancia Delta Integrale appears to be the car of the moment this year with two Evolution II examples soaring past their pre-sale estimates. A 1994 version, previously owned by Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay, sold to an Australian buyer for £42,118, and a bright yellow 1993 example went to a phone bidder for £33,750. These sales came in the wake of the headline-grabbing £225,000 achieved by four-times World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen’s Group A works Lancia Delta Integrale during the Race Car Sale held on Thursday, 27th July.

Kim Hangs On

South Korea's Kim In-kyung held her nerve last Sunday to claim a first major title by winning the Women's British Open at Kingsbarns. Kim took a six-shot lead into the final round but a course record-equalling 64 from England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff took her to within two shots of the lead. But Kim, 29, maintained her form to post a 71 and win by two shots. Another Englishwoman, Georgia Hall, had to settle for a tie for third after a 70, alongside American Michelle Wie (66) and German Caroline Masson (67). A superb run of scoring saw Ewart Shadoff follow a birdie on the second hole with five in a row from the sixth and another on the 13th.

Rory McIlroy was happy with the performance of new caddie Harry Diamond as the pair enjoyed a positive first tournament together at last weekend’s WGCBridgestone Invitational. McIlroy confirmed at his pre-tournament press conference that close-friend Diamond would be on his bag at Firestone as well as the US PGA Championship which started yesterday, after deciding to terminate his nine-year partnership with JP Fitzgerald. Diamond, who was the best man as McIlroy's wedding earlier this year, received

The 29-year-old from Northallerton then birdied the 17th to close the gap to two and parred the last to complete a 64, equalling the record set on day one by Wie and matched by Inbee Park in round three. However, Kim, who famously missed a one-foot putt to win the Kraft Nabisco Championship - now called the ANA Inspiration - in 2012, was able to par the final five holes for a winning total of 18 under par. Ewart Shadoff's runners-up finish is her best result in a major and secured her place on Europe's Solheim Cup team to take on the United States in Iowa from 1820 August.

a grade of "A" from the world No 4, who put together four sub-70 rounds as he earned a tie for fifth place on seven under, although he finished nine shots adrift of runaway champion Hideki Matsuyama. "Harry was good, and he encouraged me when I needed it," said McIlroy, who also posted a top-10 finish at The Open after arriving at Royal Birkdale having missed the cut in three of his previous four events. "We both did yardages and we didn't really make any mistakes out there. He did what was expected of him, so I guess you can't not give him an A."

Spanish Sweep

World champion Marc Marquez won MotoGP's Czech round on Sunday to extend his lead at the top of the standings to 14 points. The Spaniard was one of the first to change to slick tyres in a race that started in the rain before drying out. "I could have gone faster but there was no need to do so, I had it won and I`m not taking those risks anymore," said the three time world champion who however celebrated by standing on his bike as he rode past the main stand to an ovation. "These kind of races (mixed weather) can be very challenging and you have to remain focussed," Marquez

said added. Dani Pedrosa was second ahead of Maverick Vinales as Spain completed a podium clean sweep. "This weekend was very tough, then luckily on the grid the sun started to come out," said Vinales. "On the rain tyre I was feeling good, but I was already thinking after two laps maybe I should go in but there were too many people, so maybe I went in a lap too late.” Having three Spaniards on the podium was a fine tribute to 13 time world champion Angel Nieto who died three days earlier aged 70 after a quad bike acci-

dent last week, with the riders pointing to the sky in recognition of a Spanish legend. Ahead of the day`s proceedings riders and teams from all categories gathered behind a banner saying `Gracias Maestro` and observed a minute`s silence Marquez, the fourth leader of the championship this season, has 154 points - 14 more than Vinales. The 24-year-old had started the day with a five-point lead over his compatriot. Marquez has now won two races in a row after his success in Germany last month and three this season.

Sevens Success

The eighth Mar Menor beach rugby sevens tournament took place last weekend at Santiago de la Ribera. The event, organised by

the San Javier Squalos club, attracted teams from around the area, and further afield, in addition to hundreds of spectators checking out the action over the day.

The men’s competition was won by Club Rugby Alcala from north of Madrid, whilst the women’s contest saw Cuder de Murcia run out as victors.

Finishing Soon

Two-times Tour de France champion Alberto Contador will hang up his racing bike after this month’s Vuelta a Espana, bringing to an end the career of one of the world's greatest cyclists. The Spaniard, one of six riders to have won all three Grand Tours in a 14-year professional career marred by a doping ban, made his announcement on social media site Instagram on Monday. "I will participate in the next Vuelta a Espana from August 19th and that will be my last race as a professional," the 34-year-old seven-times Grand Tour champion said. "I say this happy, without sadness. It's a decision that I have thought very well and I don't think there is a better farewell than in the home race and in my country." "I'm sure they will be three wonderful weeks." Nicknamed El Pistolero for his attacking style and ability to mount devastating attacks in the mountains, Contador won his first Tour de France in 2007 with the

Discovery Channel team before moving to Astana and winning it again in 2009. He also won the 2010 edition but in 2012 was stripped of that title after being banned for two years after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol at the race. Contador, who blamed it on contaminated steak, initially had a one-year ban lifted by the Spanish cycling federation but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) eventually banned him, backdating it to January 2011 and erasing all his results from July 2010 to February 2012. He returned later in 2012 to win the Vuelta. While Contador, who was also stripped of the 2011 Giro d'Italia title, divided opinion within the sport he remained one of the most popular riders among cycling fans. As well as his Tour triumphs, he won the 2008 and 2015 Giros and the Vuelta in 2008, 2012 and 2014. In 2015 he announced

that he would attempt to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour back-to-back. After winning the Italian race his Tour hopes evaporated as he struggled in the Alps and finished fifth. Contador joined the Trek Segafredo team this season and finished ninth in the Tour de France. His hopes of bowing out with victory in the Vuelta look slim as the race includes Tour winner Chris Froome (Team Sky), Italian Vincenzo Nibali (BahrainMerida) and France's Romain Bardet (Ag2r) who was third on the podium in Paris. "It was great to have him in the team, even it was only for one season, and we will keep giving it our all to help him to achieve a big result in his last Vuelta a Espana," Trek-Segafredo general manager Luca Guercilena said. "It goes without saying we wish him the very best for his future afterwards!", he concluded.

Sandy Encounter

The Valencian regional side Nekwo Uv Barbarians sevens side (in dark blue shirts) won last weekend’s

San Juan sevens event organised by Alicante University rugby club. They beat the Cantabria

team Pataliebres in the final in what was the 20th staging of the tournament held in very hot conditions.

Real Madrid lifted a second successive UEFA Super Cup after a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in Macedonia on Tuesday night. In the battle of last season's European trophy winners, it was the Champions League holders who took the lead with Casemiro opening the scoring in the 24th minute. Zinedine Zidane's side doubled their lead in the 53rd minute through Isco and were in total control until Romelu Lukau pulled one back for the Europa League winners. United rallied late on with substitute Marcus Rashford denied by Keylor Navas and it was Real who held on to become the first team to win successive UEFA Super Cups since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990. Real Madrid are next in Spanish Super Cup action against Barcelona with the first leg this Sunday at the Nou Camp and the second leg three days later at the Bernabeu.

Liverpool have rejected a bid of 100 million euro from Barcelona for Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho, but despite what the Merseyside club are saying, Spanish media reports suggest that Coutinho is still Barca-bound, and as soon as this weekend. Mundo Deportivo have reported that Barcelona are still confident they can reach an agreement for the Brazilian, and are allegedly going ahead with the intention of presenting Coutinho to the fans before their Spanish Super Cup tie against Real Madrid on Sunday. Barca's second bid for the 25-year-old, which was rejected immediately, comprised an initial 85m euro plus 15m euro in add-ons. Liverpool have reiterated that Coutinho - who joined them from Inter Milan for in 2013 - is not for sale. Barcelona sold Brazil forward Neymar to Paris St-Germain for a world record transfer of 220 million euro last week. Coutinho who scored 14 goals last season and spent six weeks out with an ankle injury, signed a new five-year-deal in January, which did not include a release clause. Manager Jurgen Klopp said the Reds were not a “selling club” when Barca's previous 80 million euro offer was rejected in July, and Liverpool consider the matter closed. The Marca newspaper says that Barcelona still want Coutinho signed before the Spanish Super Cup. They also claim Andre Gomes could be included in a swap deal, along with Brazilian midfielder Rafinha. Gomes made 47 appearances for Barca last season, while Rafinha featured 28 times and could be more likely to leave the Nou Camp. The AS newspaper is also reporting that Andre Gomes could be a makeweight in the deal, and that Klopp is keen on the 24year-old. They have also claimed Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have given approval to negotiate the transfer for 100 million euro, with a further 20 million euro in add-ons. Diario Sport has also reported that Barcelona are still very optimistic a deal will be pushed through, despite the failed bid on Wednesday night.

Rivals In Battle

Borussia Dortmund have told Barcelona to stump up 150 million euros if they want to sign Ousmane Dembele, but they could also face a challenge from Real Madrid. Dembele scored 10 goals in 49 appearances for Dortmund last season after joining the club for 15 million euros from Rennes and helped the Signal Iduna Park side to win the DFB-Pokal Cup in his first season. According to Mundo Deportivo, Madrid have made their own approach following a meeting held between Barcelona and Dortmund bosses on Tuesday. Madrid are cooling their interest in teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe, who Monaco are determined to keep. The report adds that Madrid's interest in Dembele will either raise the fee Barcelona need to pay or see him become a Bernabeu player.

Neymar is considering a formal complaint to FIFA against his former club Barcelona over an unpaid loyalty bonus, as his Paris Saint-Germain debut appears to be on hold again. The ex-Barca star says he feels "very bad" over the withheld payment, according to a source in Spain close to the player. Barcelona are refusing to pay a 30 million euro bonus to Neymar's father following a contract renewal last year. Neymar completed a world record move to Paris Saint-Germain last week. It is understood Neymar's lawyers have yet to lodge paperwork to world football's governing body but the option remains under consideration. Barcelona spokesman Josep Vives told a news conference: "The club will not pay the bonus to Neymar's father.” "There were three conditions: the player must not negotiate his departure from the club during the month before the bonus became payable, he must demonstrate his desire to fulfil his contract, and that we would not pay out the bonus before September 1, to ensure the transfer window was closed. "Now that we know that none of these three conditions were met, we will not honour that bonus." The AS newspaper is reporting that Neymar’s Paris Saint-Germain is “on ice”, as Barcelona are reportedly yet to receive payment for his world-record 222 million euro deal. AS claims Neymar looks set to miss out on Sunday’s trip to Guingamp due to the complex nature of the transfer and the size of the fee. Barcelona have apparently received a cheque from the Qatar National Bank which does match Neymar’s high release clause, but AS suggests that there has been a hitch. A source close to the case was quoted by AS as saying: “The amount and the route impose a series of steps that take a few days. “It’s normal for Barcelona to have the money in their account before the end of the week.” However, it was claimed on Wednesday that it’s the Spanish Football Federation who are delaying the deal. Their French counterparts claim they are yet to receive documents necessary to processing the final parts of the move. The Spanish FA had until last night(Thursday) to make sure everything is in order if Neymar is to make his bow this weekend. An LFP(French Football League) statement read: “The Spanish federation of football has until Thursday night to send the CIT to the French federation of football, who send it back to the French professional league, and then Neymar can play with PSG this weekend.” Meanwhile Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has criticised Neymar's method of pushing for a move to Paris Saint-Germain and said that the Catalan club were in a win-win situation regarding his departure. Bartomeu claims Barca were always relaxed about the issue because they were either going to retain Neymar or gain 222 million euro to invest in new players. However, the Barca chief lamented the manner in which the Brazil international carried out his move to PSG. "Everything has its limit and no player is above Barca. [Neymar's] way of doing things was not the best. It was not befitting a Barcelona player."

TOKYO HOPES

The English Football Association plans to put together a British women's team for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Great Britain did not field a team in Rio last summer because the four home nation football associations could not come to an agreement. But FA chief executive Martin Glenn says talks have taken place about entering a team in three years' time.

LOOPHOLE CLOSED

English Premiership clubs have closed a contract loophole which threatened transfer chaos in rugby union. The clubs acted after England wing Jonny May used a little-known clause in his contract to leave Gloucester for Leicester for a fixed compensation fee, despite being under contract. But following talks on Tuesday, the 12 existing Premiership clubs have voted unanimously to amend the stipulation.

BACK IN BUSINESS

It barely seems to have had a break, but here we go with the return of the English Premier League this weekend, with tonight seeing Arsenal taking on Leicester City to get the whole thing going, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Champions Chelsea have an apparent home-banker tomorrow afternoon against Burnley, whilst the most interesting of the weekend openers comes on Sunday lunchtime as returning Newcastle entertain runners-up from May, Tottenham(full fixture list inside on page 47). But what of the next nine months or so and the title contenders? John Terryless Chelsea are one of the favourites to lift the trophy but they will find it difficult to successfully bring back the title to Stamford Bridge that Antonio Conte won by a huge margin of seven points in his first season in England, with the squad too thin for his liking, and Champions League action beckoning as well. Chelsea's biggest rivals have to be the big spenders Manchester City for the league crown. Pep Guardiola's first season at the helm didn't go as per plan as they finished 15

points adrift of the champions. The former Barcelona manager took note of his ageing squad and has completely revamped it this summer window. City's cross town rivals Manchester United have shelled out some big bucks as Mourinho has to deliver a competitive league side to silence his critics, and I expect them to do well. The title might be out of Liverpool's reach this season, with or without Coutinho, but they are more than capable of finishing in the top six of the table. Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham has a well drilled squad at his disposal, so much so that he doesn't feel the need to change it much in this transfer window. Spurs will be there or there abouts, but what about London rivals Arsenal? Arsenal of course won the FA Cup back in May, and then beat Chelsea to the Community Shield last weekend(Arsene Wenger lifting it with Petr Cech below), and they won't be playing in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. That could help them in their quest for other honours this season.
