BANK ROBBERS BAGGED

A

five-strong gang that blew up ATMs across Alicante Province have been arrested by the National Police in Santa Pola and El Altet, with three of them refused bail after an appearance at an Alicante court. The five Spaniards, aged between their twenties and forties, struck at a Santander branch on Plaza de Castilla in Elche last week, and that ultimately led to their detention. They were charged with ATM robberies in Rojales (pictured), the San Juan beach area of Alicante, and Elche, as well as being accused of drug trafficking. In late September, the gang bungled their Rojales robbery, as previously reported in The Courier, when they fled empty-hand-

ed after the alarm went off at a BBVA branch la Plaza de España. The National Police said the gang were meticulous in their prepartions, casing a bank branch for a number of days prior to striking, including working out various escape routes, and using false car number plates to put the authorities off the scent. The gang utilised a lot of expertise in explosives by creating a special battery powered detonator, and are estimated to have stolen around 10 thousand euro since their activities started in August. The damage due to the outside of the banks and the machines, according to the police, was substantially more than the actual amounts of cash that were

Almagro added that the current land sale process is almost finished, and subject to legal approval he outlined a series of developments that would come from the money entering the council’s coffers. Planned projects for the Orihuela Costa, besides the proposed cultural centre, include improvements to the local roads, parks, and green areas. In Orihuela City, a refurbishment of the railway station ahead of the high speed AVE link is in the pipeline as

taken. The men had specific functions within the organisation with one being the explosive expert; another man being in charge of surveillance and escape routes; with the rest of the gang committing the actual robberies.

The crew were arrested over two days last week, with one of them apparently having been on the run from prison. They were also charged with distributing marijuana and hashish in Alicante Province and the Murcia region.

ORIHUELA’S LAND WINDFALL ive plots of land designated for building on the Orihuela Costa are set to make 14.5 million euro for Orihuela council, which is over two and a half million euro above the original projected value. The money is to be used for projects across the municipality which currently have no budget, including a new cultural centre for the Orihuela Costa. Orihuela’s planning councillor Rafael Almagro said that land prices had gone up by 50 percent over the last four years compared to the council’s last land auction in 2013, giving a strong indica-

The contract race to run Murcia’s Corvera International Airport is a done deal, as the only rival to part-state owned company, AENA, pulled out of the bidding process on Monday. This week’s deadline for technical bid details saw French company, Edeis, who run the facility at Castellon in the northern part of the Valencia region, not take their bid forward, which now only leaves AENA as the sole applicant for the 25 year franchise to manage Corvera. AENA run nearly all of Spain’s aiports including the existing Murcia facility at San Javier, as well as Alicante-Elche airport. The Corvera operating franchise was readvertised after previous operator Aeromur was stripped of their license. Murcia’s public works minister Pedro Rivera said that with the sole AENA bid, the final process for awarding the contract will now be scrutinised by a Murcia government committee, who in theory could reject the AENA proposals, but that move would border on the sensational, as the long-running saga of Corvera appears to be drawing to an end.

that their apartment had been broken into and upon investigation, they discovered that five families were living in the some block illegally, despite having apparently signed what they thought were genuine contracts with the woman. The woman would break into the apartments when she knew they were empty; change the locks; and then just rent them out to unsuspecting families, some of whom had small children. Any valuable items were also taken from the properties, ahead of the "new tenants". The 28-year-old has "form" in scamming, having

been arrested last November and spending some time behind bars. The area where she operated recently in Torrevieja has not been made public by the Guardia Civil.

Property Scammer A woman who rented out properties in the Torrevieja area offering bogus contracts on dwellings that she had no legal access to, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The 28-year-old, of Bosnian descent, has been charged with a variety of crimes including fraud; producing fake documents; and robbery, with an existing criminal record going back a year. Properties were advertised on prominent websites as the scam took hold. The Guardia released something was up when a Torrevieja couple came back off holiday to find out

It’s an ironic twist for both AENA and the Murcia administration, as they have been involved in a bitter row over compensation for the eventual closure of the current airport at San Javier, which is operated by AENA. That came largely over the putting down of a new runway at San Javier back in 2011, even though Corvera was being built, with AENA demanding 35 million euro in compensation. The tender process started in the spring with two other companies, besides AENA, throwing their hat into the ring. With no opposition, the timetable for awarding the franchise will be vastly reduced, and despite Murcia ministers unwilling to commit to a Corvera opening date, having had their predictions constantly come back to bite them in recent years, most observers believe that services in and out of Corvera will start sometime next year. The latest news also means that the final countdown for San Javier to continue as a passenger airport will finally start, with AENA set to transfer allof the current services to the new facility at Corvera.

Orihuela police officers staged a demonstration last Friday outside council offices in Orihuela City over the way they feel they are treated by the authority on the Orihuela Costa. 40 officers were involved in the protest, which came in the wake of an announcement that the council would not compensate three of them, after their own cars were set on fire close to the Playa Flamenca Town Hall last month. The council says they are not covered by civil liability insurance. The Guardia Civil's search for the culprit is still continuing, with the working theory being that the arsonist had been previously arrested by the Orihuela

local police and had a grudge against them. The three police unions who organised Friday's demonstration said that they had written to Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana stating that the attack on the cars would never had happened if the council had lis-

tened to previous warnings over the facilities for the local police. The unions added that their members felt abandoned in the Orihuela Costa, with poor working conditions and not enough officers to do the job.

Extortion Detentions Two Torrevieja local police officers have been arrested on extortion charges by the Guardia Civil. The operation is still active and more arrests have not been ruled out in connection with the probe which has secrecy conditions imposed on it by Torrevieja’s courts. The Informacion newspa-

per has reported that the officers were detained on Monday lunchtime and are part of the force’s environmental unit who do acoustic checks on sound levels in bars and clubs. No comment has been issued from Torrevieja’s mayor José Manuel Dolón because of the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Dancing Driver A motorist fined by Torrevieja police for "dancing" whilst she was behind the wheel of her car, is to take Torrevieja council to court, in order to overturn her 200 euro fine. The incident happened during the summer, with Torrevieja police issuing her with a fine when they spotted her not properly in control of her car when it was going down Calle María Parodi, by the intersection with Calle La Carera and the Paseo de la Libertad. Officers said that she was "not concentrating on the road in a busy central

area of the city". The dancing driver has not been named, or how she

An Inside Job Two men and a woman have been arrested for stealing jewellery and items belonging to a 93-year-old Callosa de Segura woman, and then selling them to various gold and pawn shops across Alicante Province. One of the men arrested targeted the lady, who was his grandmother, back in August and accessed her safe to steal 15 thousand euro of items and which were of great sentimental value to her. The Guardia Civil (officer pictured reviewing the stolen goods) started to work out who had been visiting her

and focused their suspicions on the grandson, who along with his other two cohorts, started to sell off the items, which also belonged to other

Poppy Appeal Launch The launch of the 2017 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Spain took place in Benidorm last Friday. Once again the parade was lead by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums (pictured) and their music brought people in from the beach to watch the parade at the Rincon de Loix. Following the Pipes and Drums were many Legion Branch Standards from across the region as well as a number of other military organisations. Marching in the parade beside the veterans, were people representing a number of different nationalities. Benidorm mayor Toni Pérez welcomed everyone to the city, with the speeches and ceremonies ending with more music from the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Poniente Problems

Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón has called on water company Acuamed to improve safety fencing at the suspended Paseo del Dique de Poniente project. The work was meant to see the creation of a 650 metre walkway, as well as new street lighting and paving, but construction was stopped at the start of last year due to what Dolón said was the “corruption of the Partido Popular”. The mayor said that fences and security have to

cially during the tourist season.

On With The Show

The Valencian president Ximo Puig visited Torrevieja's International Auditorium on Tuesday for the formal launch of a cultural programme for the venue, which has widely been branded as a “white elephant”. Puig (picture from the Informacion newspaper, with Torrevieja mayor Jose Manual Dolon to his left) said he was convinced that the venue had a bright and vibrant future, and that it was the job of his administration to put “an end to white elephants that were erected when the Partido Popular (PP) were in power”. The auditorium was commissioned by the previous

The non-binding recommendation comes from the national Ombudsman, Francisco Fernández Marugán, acting on a complaint from the Spanish Federation of Naturists and the Ciudadanos political party. The story made national headlines and San Pedro’s Partido Popular mayor

Visitación Martínez, said that the ruling had surprised the authority, because they were told nothing about the inquiry in the first place or

asked to contribute to it. Despite the recommendations, there are no immediate plans for the council to alter their ban.

The Cranes Return

Nine people, including three children, were treated for smoke inhalation after their first-floor San Javier flat caught fire on Sunday morning. The blaze happened in the living room of the apartment on Avenida de Balsicas at around 7.00 am, with emergency services being told that people could not escape due to the thick smoke on the block's staircase. On-site treatment was handed out for smoke inhalation and shock, with nobody needing hospital treatment, and the fire being extinguished within a matter of minutes.

Canine Request Over a hundred dog owners have asked Santa Pola council to create another dog beach area after the resounding success of the municipality’s first dog beach at La Caleta dels Gossets, which opened to canines some 18 months ago. The area was described by Santa Pola council last year as being the town’s biggest tourist attraction of the summer, but according to La Calerta dels Gossets users, it has become a victim of its own success, with visitor numbers well over double of those last year using the facility. They have called on the

The cranes have moved into a major Torrevieja site, after some 16 years of licensing delays. The council has given the green light to a big development at La Coronelita next to La Hoya, which is the last major piece of urban land in the city earmarked for development. The site at La Coronelita, adjoining the Los Balcones area of Torrevieja, is 300,000sq m in size with the potential for 1,300 properties to be built, with the first phase of work involving the building of 300 homes.

council to expand the area as the sheer numbers mean there is not enough sand for

the dogs to play on, or to allocate an extra cove for dogs to use.

Tourist Push A branch of the Lidl supermarket chain in the Barcelona area has sacked one of its workers for apparently working too hard. Jean P turned up his shift an hour early to prepare the store for the customers, and had worked there for 12 years. His behaviour, though,

drew complaints from other employees who were starting to get annoyed by his extra hours. His termination notice read ‘for very serious labour breaches’ saying he had ‘made orders, changed prices or replenished entire pallets of items.’ CCTV footage showed

Jean P turning up at store at 5.00 am and spending ‘between 49 and 87 minutes’ preparing the store without signing in for his shift. His so-called ‘bad’ behaviour broke Lidl's very strict rules about paying every employee for the exact amount of time they worked.

Award Winner

A new tourism industry committee has been set up in San Pedro del Pinatar, with Murcia’s tourist authority chief, Manuel FernándezDelgado, attending the inaugural meeting. The committee is made up of people involved in the tourist sector in the San

Pedro area, along with local council and regional government representatives. The aim is to develop new ideas to push tourism forward in the municipality,. This would be done by better promotion and linking it all to what the whole of the Murcia region is doing.

Fernández-Delgado said: "San Pedro has great potential to boost tourism further, and one of the aims of the new committee is to encourage visitors to come in the low season.” A result of this would mean the creation of more local jobs.

San Javier’s public library has once again been voted as one of the best in the country as it kept its top ten status in the annual Maria Moliner awards which promote reading. The facility, based on Calle Coronel Fernández Tudela, first started appearing in the top ten for medium-sized municipalities in 2010, and took first prize five years ago. It will get a seventeenhundred euro grant to buy books from the Ministry of Education, who organise the Maria Moliner awards, which have been running for 28 years.

Key Card Crook

An Albanian man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil on suspicion of raiding 50 hotel rooms in Spanish holiday areas by opening key card locks with electronic equipment. The 24-year-old has been accused of stealing from holidaymakers in Ibiza, Mallorca and Barcelona. He is thought to have broken into hotel rooms using home-made fake key cards. The unnamed man allegedly stole laptops, watches and mobile phones while tourists were out sightseeing. At the end of last year, the Guardia noticed a spike in robberies from hotel rooms in the historic town of Calvia on Mallorca. Officers

realised someone had been using a fake key to get into the rooms, undetected by hotel workers. On October 13th, staff in a hotel in Magaluf on Mallorca, caught a man redhanded following a theft. He managed to run away after a struggle with hotel workers but the Guardia recovered electronic equipment from the scene that had been used to open the doors. He was tracked down and arrested. In his room they allegedly found an electronic device for sabotaging locks as well as a number of items they suspected were stolen. Police suspect him of selling the stolen goods at sec-

ond-hand shops in Mallorca's capital city Palma, and it is thought they also found evidence of him selling items in Barcelona in Catalunya. They checked the items and linked them to reported thefts in Palma, Magaluf and Barcelona. Some of the items allegedly linked the man to raids at hotels on Ibiza, with the Guardia believing that he travelled all around the country to steal from hotel rooms. He has been charged with 50 thefts but the investigation is still ongoing and the Guardia expect he may have committed more crimes.

Restricted Access Chemicals which could be used to create explosives will now be restricted in sale and require a special permit to buy them now that Spain has incorporated a European law passed in 2013. Substances affected by the new rules include certain weed-killers, insecticides and disinfectants, as well as chemicals used in arts and crafts. Spain’s Interior minister, Juan Ignacio Zoido, says the new legislation 'is not seeking to go against anyone', but merely to 'improve safety for everyone' by limiting availability of certain toxic or corrosive fluids to the general public and 'guaranteeing adequate communication' in the event of 'suspect transactions' – a fundamental tool in fighting terrorism. The legal reform was sparked by the fact that the Jihad terrorists who staged the Catalunya attacks two months ago had tried to create explosives to commit the massacres, but resorted to using vehicles and knives when their laboratory in an abandoned house in Alcanar blew up, killing a rogue Imam now known to have been indoctrinating young Moroccans. Certain preservatives and

even components found in toothpaste and shampoo – which are not explosive or dangerous in the quantities used in these products, but in very large amounts could be dangerous in the wrong hands – will also require a permit. The use or purchase of everyday consumer goods such as cleaning fluids, hair dye, nail-polish remover – which usually contain acetone – barbecue-lighting or fire-lighting cubes, bleach,

detergents and so on will not be affected by the new legislation. Chemicals such as nitromethane, which are often used in making items such as model aircraft and cars, nitric acid, which is used for engraving metal and jewellery, anti-corrosion fluids for metal often used in the fine arts or for preserving licensed firearms such as potassium chlorate, and weed-killers like sodium chlorate will need a licence.

Apartment Inferno

Two men died and another 13 injured in an apartment block fire in the northern part of the Valencia region last Saturday morning. The blaze happened in the dining room in a firstfloor property in the CastellĂłn province town of Burriana shortly after 6.00 am. Firefighters from nearby Nules found a 67-year-old man in the apartment where the inferno started and managed to rescue him, but he died at the scene whilst

being treated by paramedics. His wife and daughter were at home at the time but managed to get out before the fire brigade reached the scene. Another team of emergency workers kicked down the door of the second-floor apartment, which was said to be occupied by eight Pakistani nationals living in cramped conditions. They were all unconscious, and one of them, a 40-year-old man, subsequently died.

Rubbish Concerns

Residents in Gran Alacant are calling on Santa Pola council to do more to clean up their streets. The complaints concern overflowing rubbish containers as well as their condition, which some residents claim are not fit for purpose, with frequent leakage reported. Criticisms are levelled at the bins not being big enough to cope with the amount of trash that is put in

them, as well as their not being enough collections, both for domestic and business users. That’s leading to waste just being left next to the containers in the street. There’s also concern over where some of them are located, causing poor visibility at pedestrian crossings, with drivers unable to see whether or not people are about to cross the road.

Reckless Slumber

The 40-year-old father of a 22-month-old boy has been arrested by the National Police and charged with severe recklessness, after the child died after falling out of a second floor window of their apartment in Badajoz in the Extremadura region. The man was fast asleep whilst the drama

unfolded last Friday night, with emergency services discovering the youngster lying on the street, after they were called by a neighbour. Firefighters broke into the building via a window, and found the boy's father fast asleep on the sofa, whilst his wife was not there, as she was out looking for work.

Balloons Galore

October’s annual pink balloon release at Zenia Boulevard to commemorate breast cancer awareness month raised over 3,300 euro for the AECC cancer charity. It’s the fifth time time that Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers have staged

the event, with a full day of entertainment held at the shopping complex, which included the performers giving their services free of charge. The day finished with the balloons being released, with all the money raised coming from people who

bought a helium-filled pink balloon and attached a card to it with a message to a loved one who may have died because of cancer. The person who finds the message that travels the furthest will get a 100-euro prize, along with 20 euro going to the sender.

Stroke Benefit Over twelve-hundred euro were raised at last month’s charity night at the Quesada Fish & Chips restaurant in aid of the Stroke Association Spain. Entertainment was provided from singer Woody, with the charity reporting being very busy since their recent move to new premises at Benijofar’s cultural centre. The money will go to help fund more machines and appliances for their clients.

Charitable Birthday The founders of the Help at Home Mar Menor charity Lesley and Paul Eburne celebrated their birthdays recently at the Restaurante Ruf-Mari located in Los Urrutias, and decided to turn it into a charity fundraising bash that ended up raising 860 euro for local animal charities. Lesley and Paul have split the pot at 215 euro each, with money going to several local pet charities including APAH, P.A.P.S, L.I.P.S and Cruz Azul, which will help the organisers out with paying for vet and food costs for the many abandoned and sick furry friends. Lesley said: “At our ages, we are fortunate to have a very good life, wanting for very little, so we decided, instead of gifts, to ask for

donations to help so many furries who, through no fault of their own, find themselves abandoned.”

Christmas Is Coming

Studio32 are once again supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association with the musical White Christmas at the end of the month, with other charities also set to benefit. The show, to be staged at San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Theatre between Wednesday November 29th and Saturday December 2nd, contains some all-time classic songs including “Blue Skies”, “Sisters”, and of course the Bing Crosby title number “White Christmas”. The musical is about a

show being staged in a Vermont barn, and in charge of the production is stage manager Mike (played by Mervyn Williams, pictured left), a very over-the-top character who panics at the slightest hiccup. Spain’s economy is continuing to grow at above the forecast three percent and its GDP is rising according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The year-on-year growth in the economy has

remained at three point one percent, based upon figures for the third quarter of 2017. Also during the third quarter, between July and September, Spain's GDP grew by 0.8% - less than the 0.9% in the second quarter (Q2), but still recording a

INTEREST RATES ON THE INCREASE By Richard Samuels, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management In the UK, the base rate is the interest rate set by the Bank of England for lending to other banks, and is used as the benchmark for interest rates generally, including those available to savers from Banks and Building Societies.

with an ISA they offer tax-free growth, and tax efficient withdrawals whereby you are only taxed on the profit element of any withdrawal. Simply put, you can achieve better returns by taking advantage of a bond to invest your money in mutual funds for the medium to long term – which is likely to get better returns in comparison to saver rates from the banks. If you would like more information on the above or if you would like advice on any of the issues you can contact me on richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com.

The rate is set by the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee on the first Thursday of each month. At time of writing, the MPC are predicted to increase the rate from its current level of 0.25% on Thursday (yesterday). Either way it seems sure an increase seems highly likely before the end of the year. However, it is unlikely we will see rates climb to much higher levels anytime soon. Since the beginning of the Banking Crisis ten years ago – interest rates have dropped from 5.75% in July 2007 to the current record low of 0.25% in August 2016.During the 1980’s and 90’s the base rate was regularly into double figures. During Margaret Thatcher’s administration, mainly down to the government's decision to target and control inflation, interest rates never fell below around 7.4% and peaked at close to 15%. Times have changed since then, as interest rates have not been above 6% since the turn of the millennium. An Interest Rate increase would mean higher monthly bills for millions of people with variable rate and base rate tracker mortgages. We could then see the first rise in borrowing costs for a decade in a situation where many of these people have never seen their monthly repayments increase. Those on fixedrate mortgage deals would be protected from any increase, but only until the end of their deal’s fixed term. It should also be noted that the cost of an interest hike will vary per household, depending on the terms of the mortgage, how long it is taken out for, and other factors. On the other hand, savers have suffered years of rock bottom interest rates, and millions will be cheered by news of a likely rise. The average easy access savings account now pays just 0.4% interest, where two years ago the figure was 0.66%, and five years ago it was 1%. Last month it emerged

A Matter Of Biting

CARLO Carlo is a small to medium-sized dog that’s around eight-years-old who has a very easy going nature and loves to be near people. He was abandoned outside a vet clinic and is a very friendly dog, good with people of all ages and mixes well with other dogs. He does have Leishmann’s disease, but fortunately has no health problems from this condition. As Carlo is entering his twighlight years, a foster home would be considered for him, with the K9 charity being resonsible for his vet fees. If you can give him a loving home, please contact the K9 shelter on 600 845 420.

KALI Kali is a small six-kilo female terrier aged around 20 months, and is currently in a foster home with lots of other dogs and cats. Kali was rescued from a perrera and promptly gave birth to four puppies who have all been rehomed. She is loving and likes to be cuddled, and would be a faithful loving companion, but she is not great with other females but is fine with males! For more about Kali please call PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com.

LEAH & SOX Sisters Leah and Sox are the cutest, almost identical and most affectionate kittens you could wish to meet. They purr for fun and love cuddles, and are also devoted to each other, so their foster mum wants to try to home them together. If you are looking for a couple of fun loving kittens, with loads of love to give, then they are the girls for you. To arrange to meet them, please call APAH on 630 422 563.

OAKLEY

Oakley is a handsome one-year-old dog who is fully vaccinated, micro chipped and castrated, and weighs around eight kilos. He is an energetic and happy boy who loves to play and run around with the other dogs at the SAT kennels. Oakley can jump quite high and often climbs out of his pen so would need a secure area to live. If you think he is the boy for you, then please contact the SAT kennels on 966 710 047 or email info@satanimalrescue.com.

Dogs are everywhere, and some are friendlier than others. As dog owners, we must take responsibility for training our dogs and keeping them under our control at all times. We must also help spread awareness to others about proper behaviour around dogs, dog safety and preventing dog bites. It is important to understand that ANY dog is capable of biting, regardless of breed or size. Even the nicest dog can snap or bite when injured or afraid. All children and adults should learn how to keep themselves safe around dogs. Most importantly, dog owners must be responsible for their dogs. Prevent Dog Bites • Put your dog through basic obedience training. Continue to keep up with a training programme throughout your dog's life. • Allow your dog to meet and interact with different types of people under calm and positive circumstances, especially children, disabled persons and elderly people. • Expose your dog to various situations on a regular basis, such as other animals, loud noises, large machines, bicycles, and anything else that might cause fear. Start at the youngest age possible, and keep the experiences positive. • Do not discipline your dog with physical, violent, or aggressive punishments. • Always keep your dog on a leash or in a fenced area. Know your dog well before letting him off-leash in permitted areas. Keep your dog in your sight at all times. • If you suspect or know that your dog has fearful or aggressive tendencies, always warn others. Do not let your dog approach people and other animals unless the situation is highly controlled. Use a muzzle if necessary.

SUKI Suki is a 20-month-old small-medium sized girl. She has a very sweet character and is a lovely dog, who gets on well with other dogs. Suki was found wandering and was a bit nervous at first, but warms up very quickly, and would make make a very loyal companion for a lucky person. For more about her, please telephone PEPA on 650 304 746 or email p.e.p.a.animalcharity@gmail.com.

• Keep your dog's vaccinations current (especially rabies) and visit your vet routinely for wellness check-ups. • Always reward and praise your dog for good behaviour. Avoid Dog Bites • Never try to approach or touch an unfamiliar dog without first asking to owner's permission. If an owner is not present, do not go near the dog. • When meeting an unknown dog, allow the dog to come to you. Crouch down or turn to the side. Let him sniff your hand before you pet him. • Do not put your face close to an unknown dog - this includes "hugs and kisses." • Understand dog body language - most dogs will show specific warning signs before biting. • If you are cornered by a dog, remain still and avoid eye contact. Never run and/or scream. When the dog stops paying attention to you, slowly back away. • If knocked over by a dog, fall to your side in a fetal position, covering your head and face. Remain very still and calm. • Never approach a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. Dogs in these situations are more likely to be protective and can become startled. • Never leave young children or babies alone with a dog for any reason. • Do not approach, touch or attempt to move an injured dog. Instead, contact a vet or animal control for help. Dog bites can be prevented if the proper measures are taken. Remember responsible dog ownership and education are the keys to safety.

ZEUS Zeus is a young 11-year-old dog who still thinks he is a puppy, and is being cared by for by Pets in Spain. He is negative for Mediterranean diseases, chipped, vaccinated and neutered. Zeus is good with other dogs, house-trained and loves going for rides in the car. For more details, please call Pets in Spain on 645 469 253.www.petsinspain.com.

Catalunya Developments

Spain's high court has summoned sacked Catalunya leader Carles Puigdemont and 13 other members of his dismissed government to appear before them. It also gave until today (Friday) to pay a deposit of six point two million euro to cover potential liabilities. The summons comes after the chief prosecutor on Monday said he would press charges including rebellion. Mr Puigdemont (pictured

on Tuesday) travelled to Belgium at the start of the week with several former ministers, saying that he was not there to seek asylum. Carles Puigdemont triggered a crisis in Spain by holding an independence referendum in early October in the semi-autonomous region despite Madrid's opposition and the Constitutional Court declaring the vote illegal. Spain's central govern-

ment took direct control of Catalunya at the weekend. Mr Puigdemont turned up in Brussels on Monday as Attorney-General JosÊ Manuel Maza called for Catalunya’s leaders to face charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds. The Audiencia National has now summoned the sacked Catalunya officials who are yet to be formally charged - to testify today. If they do not appear, prose-

cutors could order their arrest. Meanwhile, the speaker of Catalunya's dissolved parliament Carme Forcadell and other former lawmakers have been summoned to the Supreme Court because they still have parliamentary immunity. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Mr Puigdemont said he was not trying to escape justice by travelling to Belgium but wanted to be able to speak

freely. His comments came as Spain's constitutional court suspended the declaration of independence made by the Catalan parliament last Friday. Mr Puigdemont also said he would accept the result of snap elections in Catalunya on December 21st, which were called by the central government after it invoked Article 155 of the constitution, temporarily suspending the region's autonomy.

"I want a clear commitment from the state. Will the state respect the results that could give separatist forces a majority?" Mr Puigdemont asked reporters. Meanwhile the Guardia Civil raided the offices of the Mossos police force in Catalunya on Tuesday. According to Spanish media reports, they searched eight offices for communications relating to the illegal referendum on October 1st.

Nothing Doing

Cornwall-bound passengers on a flight from Alicante-Elche airport ended up having a 90-minute delay at Newquay Airport, after it was discovered there were no border control staff to process them. Last Sunday’s Ryanair flight form Alicante-Elche saw the tired travellers herded into a lounge (pictured), as border officers had to be

scrambled from Exeter and Plymouth. Passengers expressed their anger via social media. Matthew Osborne said, "Passengers being held against their will. Unable to leave the airport due to no immigration officers on site.” A spokesperson for Newquay Airport said, "UK Border Force are responsible for securing the UK entry

border under the Immigration Act 1971. “Due to the non-attendance of UK Border Force officials, to comply with the legislation, passengers were accommodated in the Airport terminal until officers arrived onsite to process them”. "We are currently investigating why UK Border Force didn’t attend as they would usually do."

Slippery Shaman

A man from Northern Spain faces over 11 years in jail after conning a woman into believing that he was a shaman, as she let him sexually assault her 12-year-old daughter. Her mother also faces a similar prison term. The fraudster from A Coruña in Galicia knew the woman as a work colleague, and convinced her, as a

believer in psychics and tarot cards, that he was a shaman and tricked her into giving him gifts. He convinced her to let him spend time alone with her daughter, and fooled her into believing that she had been a goddess in a previous life. He even set up a bogus email account, as he pre-

tended to be someone who gave out the goddess’ orders. The mother fell for the story and did nothing to stop the fake shaman from assaulting the child, with the whole plot being rumbled by the girl’s father after he accessed their e-mails, and reported the matter to the authorities.

Rolling In It

All Year Round

A clutch of routes have been launched from Alicante-Elche airport for the winter season, as the facility continues to built up an all-year portfolio of services, as opposed to flights finishing at the end of October. The airport, which is projected to finish the year with a record-breaking 13 million-plus Ryanair has posted an 11 percent rise in half-year profits despite a rota blunder which saw thousands of flights scrapped. The Dublin-based carrier's headline measure of profit after tax rose 11 percent to nearly 1.3 billion euro for the six months to the end of September and it said it remained on course to meet its full-year target. Ryanair's cancellations have affected 700,000 pas-

sengers covering a period from September through to March next year and are set to cost the airline 25 million euro as they will need to put them on alternative flights or refund them the price of their ticket. Passenger traffic rose 11 percent to 72.1 million but Ryanair said growth would slow to 4 percent in the second half of the financial year following the grounding of 25 aircraft.

This would mean traffic of 129 million for the full year, two million fewer than had been expected. Ryanair said the "rostering failure" had prompted it to hike pilot pay, which it now says is 20 percent higher than that offered by rival Norwegian Air. However, the Irish airline remains locked in a standoff with crews at its London Stansted base over the issue.

passengers, said that several new connections will be running over the next few months, compared to the previous winter. That includes links from Ryanair to Milan, Frankfurt, Billand and Kaunas; Norwegian to Tenerife; Wow Air to Reyjkjavic; and Vueling’s service to Nantes in France.

ADVICE: James had a question regarding Solid State Drives ADVICE: Mary wanted to know how to access additional (SSDs) apps from Google

Q

Hi Richard, I have read about how fast the SSDs are and enjoyed your article. One question I have is: - why install a 120 GB SSD in place of a 500 GB or 750 GB SATA? Surely nowadays 120 GB disc is nowhere enough. Regards, James

A

Hi James, speed is the simple answer. Of course, I accept that 120 GB is not enough space to store everything we need in our increasingly digital lives, however 120 GB is more than enough to store the operating system and our day to day programs, and this is what I elude to at the bottom of the article. I would suggest that where appropriate we use an SSD to store our computers operating system and programs and then we store our data on a "standard" hard drive. In doing so we get the speed performance we are looking for and we don’t clog up our nice shiny SSD with pictures we hardly ever look at.

Q A

Dear Richard, I have recently clicked on the nine black dots at the top of the Google home page hoping to choose the ‘News’ app. However, it has disappeared, and I am wondering if the same app has disappeared on your PC too? Just wondering if you have heard if Google have cancelled this app – or if it is a problem with our laptops. I should be most interested to hear from you. Regards, Mary

Hi Mary, if you click on the “more” button at the bottom of the list and then the “Even more from Google”, you will see a full list of apps available to use.

If, of course, money is no object then you could go the "whole hog" and buy a 500 GB SSD, but then we are talking serious money. Hope that answers your question.

12 skinless chicken pieces a mixture of thighs and drumsticks on the bone, and halved chicken breasts 3 tbsp plain flour 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, sliced 2 carrots, diced 200g bacon lardon, smoked or unsmoked, or streaky rashers, snipped 3 bay leaves 3 sprigs thyme bottle of cheap red wine 3 tbsp tomato paste 1 chicken stock cube For the herby dumplings 140g cold butter, diced 250g self-raising flour 2 tbsp chopped mixed herb try parsley, thyme and sage or chives Method

Ingredients

Method

2 large flat mushrooms (about 85g each), stalks removed and chopped rapeseed oil, for brushing ½ garlic clove, grated (optional) a few thyme leaves 2 tomatoes, halved 2 large eggs 2 handfuls rocket

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Brush the mushrooms with a little oil and the garlic (if using). Place the mushrooms in two very lightly greased gratin dishes, bottom-side up, and season lightly with pepper. Top with the chopped stalks and thyme, cover with foil and bake for 20 mins. Remove the foil, add the

tomatoes to the dishes and break an egg carefully onto each of the mushrooms. Season and add a little more thyme, if you like. Return to the oven for 10-12 mins or until the eggs are set but the yolks are still runny. Top with the rocket and eat straight from the dishes. Prep: 5 Mins Cook: 30 Mins serves: 2

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Toss the chicken pieces with the flour and some salt and pepper, to coat them – it’s easy to do this in a plastic food bag. Heat the oil in a casserole with a lid. Brown the chicken pieces well on all sides – you’ll need to do this in batches. Remove all the pieces to a plate, and tip the onions, carrot, lardons, bay

and thyme into the pan. Cook gently for 10 mins until the onion is softened. Return the chicken pieces, with any juices that have collected on the plate. Then pour in the red wine and tomato paste and crumble in the stock cube. Add a splash of water if you need, until the chicken is almost covered. Bring to the boil, then cover with a lid and bake in the oven for 20 mins. Remove the lid and bake for another 10 mins while you make the dumplings. Rub the butter into the flour

with your fingertips until it feels like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the herbs with ½ tsp salt and some pepper. Drizzle over 150ml water, and stir in quickly with a cutlery knife to form a light dough. Use floured hands to shape into ping pong sized balls. Place the dumplings on top of the stew and bake for 20 mins more until the dumplings are cooked through. Prep: 30 Mins Cook: 1 Hour 10 Mins Serves:6

Baked Chilli & Jacket Potatoes

Ingredients 4 large jacket potatoes 1 tbsp sunflower oil 2 red onions, chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 sachet (30-39g), chilli con carne seasoning mix 500g beef mince 100g smoked bacon lardons 2 tbsp tomato purée 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can black beans, drained soured cream, grated cheese and coriander leaves, to serve Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Prick the potatoes

all over with a fork, then put on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 1 hr. While the potatoes are baking, heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and fry over a high heat for 5 mins until softened. Add the garlic and chilli sachet. Stir a few times to coat the onions in the spices, then tip the onion mixture into a large ovenproof dish. Put the pan back over high heat and add the beef mince, breaking it up with a spatula as you go. Cook until starting to become crisp at the edges, then add to the dish with the onions. Return the pan to heat and cook the bacon until crisp at the

edges. Add the bacon to the beef and stir to combine. Stir in the tomato purée and tomatoes, then put the dish in the oven with the potatoes and bake for 25-30 mins until bubbling and starting to thicken. Stir in the beans and season well. Return to the oven for 5 mins to warm through. Cut a cross in the top of each potato and squeeze the sides to open. Spoon in the baked chilli and top with soured cream, cheese and coriander if you like.

Vegan Pie

Ingredients

Method

For the filling 80ml olive oil, plus extra for brushing 2 tsp ground cumin ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp vegan red wine vinegar 3 beetroots (about 400g), peeled and sliced into rounds about ½ cm thick 1 small celeriac (about 750g), peeled, cut into quarters and then sliced into triangles about 1 cm thick 4 thyme sprigs, leaves picked 4 fat unpeeled garlic cloves 3 large sweet potatoes (about 600g), peeled and sliced into rounds about ½ cm thick 2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp semolina 250g Swiss chard, leaves only (save the stalks to add to soups, stews and risottos)

First, make the filling. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Mix together 1½ tbsp oil with the cumin, cinnamon and vinegar, and rub the mixture all over the beetroot. Put the beetroot into a small roasting tin, season well, then cover with foil and roast for 20 mins. Meanwhile, toss the celeriac with 2½ tbsp oil, the thyme, garlic and some seasoning in a second roasting tin. Separate out the slices so they cook evenly, then cover the tin in foil. In a third roasting tin, mix the sweet potato with the remaining oil, the smoked paprika and some seasoning, and cover with foil. Once the beets have cooked for 20 mins, add the celeriac and sweet potato to the oven alongside them, and roast all the veg for 40 mins further or until tender. Remove the thyme sprigs, squeeze the garlic cloves out of their skins and mash them in with the celeriac, then leave all the veg to cool. All the veg can be cooked the day before and kept in the fridge. For the pastry, boil the kettle and use some coconut oil to grease a deep 20cm springform cake tin. Pour the flour into a bowl and add 1 tsp salt. Mix the coconut oil with 200ml boiling water, stir until melted (put it in the microwave if need be), then pour into the flour and mix with a wooden spoon to form a dough. Working as quickly as you can (it’s best to roll the pastry when it’s warm), cut

For the pastry 150g coconut oil, plus extra for the tin 500g spelt flour almond milk, for brushing

off a ¼ of the dough and set aside under a tea towel. Roll out the rest to 0.5cm thick, then use it to line the cake tin, pressing the dough into the corners and leaving any excess pastry overhanging the sides. Don’t worry if the pastry breaks – it’s very forgiving, so you can patch it up as you go. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Now build the pie. Cover the base with chard leaves, then scatter over the semolina (which will absorb the beet juices), press in the beetroot, and season. Add another layer of chard, followed by the sweet potato, and season. Add a final layer of chard leaves, then top with the celeriac and season again. Roll out the pastry you set aside to a thickness of 0.5cm to use as the lid. Put the lid on top of the pie and, using a fork, press together the overhanging pastry to create a crimped edge. Make a steam hole, then brush the top with a little almond milk mixed with a spoonful of oil (this will help to colour the pastry). Bake in the centre of the oven for 45 mins until the pastry is a deep golden brown. Leave to cool for 15 mins, then remove from the tin and serve in the middle of the table. Will keep for up to three days in the fridge (the pie is also delicious cold). Prep:1 Hour Cook: 1 Hour 45 Mins Serves: 10

Ultimate Lemon Meringue Pie

Ingredients For the pastry 175g plain flour 100g cold butter, cut in small pieces 1 tbsp icing sugar 1 egg yolk For the filling 2 level tbsp cornflour 100g golden caster sugar finely grated zest 2 large lemon 125ml fresh lemon juice (from 2-3 lemons) juice 1 small orange 85g butter, cut into pieces 3 egg yolks and a 1 whole egg For the meringue 4 egg whites, room temperature 200g golden caster sugar 2 level tsp cornflour Method For the pastry, put the flour, butter, icing sugar, egg yolk

(save the white for the meringue) and 1 tbsp cold water into a food processor. Using the pulse button so the mix is not overworked, process until the mix starts to bind. Tip the pastry onto a lightly floured surface, gather together until smooth, then roll out and line a 23 x 2.5cm loose-bottom fluted flan tin. Trim and neaten the edges. Press pastry into flutes. The pastry is quite rich, so don’t worry if it cracks, just press it back together. Prick the base with a fork, line with foil, shiny side down, and chill for 1⁄2-1 hour (or overnight). Put a baking sheet in the oven and heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Bake the pastry case ‘blind’ (filled with dry beans) for 15 mins, then remove the foil and bake a further 5-8 mins until the pastry is pale golden and cooked. Set aside. (Can be done a day ahead if you want to get ahead.) Lower the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. While the pastry bakes, prepare the filling: mix the cornflour, sugar and lemon zest in a medium saucepan. Strain and stir in the lemon juice gradually. Make orange juice up to 200ml/7fl oz with water and strain into the pan. Cook over a medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and smooth. Once the mixture bubbles, remove from the heat and beat in the butter until melted. Beat the egg yolks

(save white for meringue) and whole egg together, stir into the pan and return to a medium heat. Keep stirring vigorously for a few minutes, until the mixture thickens and plops from the spoon. (It will bubble, but doesn’t curdle.) Take off the heat and set aside while you make the meringue. Put the egg whites in a large bowl. Whisk to soft peaks, then add half the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking between each addition without overbeating. Whisk in the cornflour, then add the rest of the sugar as before until smooth and thick. Quickly reheat the filling and pour it into the pastry case. Immediately put spoonfuls of meringue around the edge of the filling (if you start in the middle the meringue may sink), then spread so it just touches the pastry (this will anchor it and help stop it sliding). Pile the rest into the centre, spreading so it touches the surface of the hot filling (and starts to cook), then give it all a swirl. Return to the oven for 18-20 mins until the meringue is crisp and slightly coloured. Let the pie sit in the tin for 30 mins, then remove and leave for at least another 1⁄2-1 hr before slicing. Eat the same day. Prep: 1 Hour 30 Mins Cook: 1 Hour 45 Mins Serves:8

Motivating Young Children To Eat Well Encouraging children to eat well can often feel like an uphill struggle. Toddlers are constantly working to gain independence and control in their lives - making battles over food choices a common occurrence. Picky eaters are prone to consuming insufficient calories and often end up reliant on highly processed or convenience foods, which are deficient in many of the vitamins children need to grow and develop. Using these motivational techniques, you can help encourage positive eating habits from a young age and give the children in your setting the best opportunity to grow into healthy adults. Demonstrate the Benefits In order to stay motivated to continue positive behaviours, it's important to recognise the benefits. This can be challenging with young children, but encouraging them to help with cooking can help them to begin to understand the value of making nutritious food choices. Children learn best with hands-on activities, so enlist

their help with ingredient preparation, mixing and stirring and invite them to comment on the food they've helped make and how it makes them feel. Encourage children to understand that eating well will give them more energy and support them in doing the things they enjoy. Break it up Toddlers tend to have small appetites and are natural snackers. Be realistic about food quantities - portion sizes should be about onefourth the size of an adult portion, so don't panic if it feels like they're not eating much. For children who don't seem interested in consuming 3 main meals, try offering healthy snacks every two to three hours instead. Give some consideration to the time and place where children are being fed. Toddlers are active learners, meaning too much activity will take their focus away from the task at hand. Ensure that there are no unnecessary distractions at the dinner table and be on the lookout for signs that

children may be growing overly tired or too hungry. Try to ensure that meals are served before either of these issues becomes a barrier to mealtime success. Encourage autonomy Children are more likely to make healthier choices when the decision to do so comes from them, rather than an outside source. Research supports this, indicating that children are around 20% more likely to consume fruits and vegetables when they're made accessible and presented attractively, but not forced upon them. Keep fresh fruit and vegetables on hand at all times and make sure they're washed, cut up and ready to go. You can add yoghurt, tahini or hummus for extra protein. Whilst parents are encouraged to maintain overall control (by deciding which food is offered, when it is offered and where it is offered), try leaving it to the individual child to decide whether or not they would like to try something and exactly how much they wish to consume. You may be

pleasantly surprised! Create Positive Associations It's incredibly easy to unwittingly turn healthy food choices into a negative. By repeatedly trying to bribe or force a child to eat their greens, you run the risk of creating longstanding associations that are less than positive. Even if children are made aware that something will make them feel good or grow big and strong, they will be reluctant to eat well if they subconsciously associate food with negative feelings (due to previous experiences of pressure or food restriction). Contrary to popular belief, children who are encouraged to enjoy a wide variety of foods (some nutritionally balanced, some less so) tend to be less fussy, while children who feel pressure to eat particular foods can be more selective with what they eat. Rather than getting hung up on 'good' or 'bad' foods, try to encourage a little of everything in moderation. It is important to build a positive attitude by continuing to

offer previously rejected foods (without pressure or negativity), allowing children to explore food and letting them serve themselves. Try to avoid commenting on what or how much children are eating and make the dinner table a place where children want to be, rather than a battleground. Be a good role model The childhood impulse to imitate is strong - children watch, listen and learn through observation and then follow what they see. As a result, if you encourage a child to eat their greens but shun vegetables yourself, they are unlikely to develop a taste for them. It's

important to refrain from commenting negatively on food or overtly restricting your own choices, so that the children in your care don't adopt the same associations with food. Don't give up It's easy to feel like children will never like certain foods, or to become frustrated when something that used to be popular is suddenly rejected, but it's important to keep at it. It can take many attempts for a child to learn to enjoy something but by ensuring that children are regularly exposed to healthy food choices, they're more likely to be receptive to them.

Postnatal depression less likely after winter or spring births Women who give birth in winter or spring are less likely to suffer postnatal depression than at other times of year, a study has shown. Other factors affecting the risk of postnatal depression, also known as postpartum depression (PPD), included the length of pregnancy, whether or not an epidural was given during delivery, and body mass index. At least 10% of women experience some degree of anxiety or depression after giving birth. Symptoms include sadness, restlessness, and lack of concentration. PPD typically arises from a combination of hormonal changes, psychologi-

cal adjustments to motherhood and fatigue, said US researchers. Dr Jie Zhou, from Brigham & Women’s hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, said: “We wanted to find out whether there are certain factors influencing the risk of developing postpartum depression that may be avoided to improve women’s health, both physically and mentally.” The team reviewed the medical records of 20,169 women who delivered babies between June 2015 and August 2017. Of the total, 817 (4.1%) suffered from PPD. Why giving birth in winter or

spring should have a positive effect is not known but it could be linked to the “seasonal enjoyment of indoor activities mothers experience with newborns”, said the researchers. The study also found that a longer pregnancy reduced the risk of PPD, while not having an epidural anaesthetic during delivery increased it. White women were less likely to experience PPD than women of other ethnic backgrounds, the research showed. The mode of delivery had no effect. The findings were presented at the Anesthesiology 2017 meeting in Boston.

Great Health Starts With The Foods We Eat In our clinic, we place an enormous importance on a patient's diet and nutrition It is undeniable that food is the key to our survival. Quite simply, we need the nutrients in foods to build, maintain and repair our tissues and organs. Human beings are organic forms of life which mean that we need nutrients to survive. These nutrients come in the form of glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. These forms the building blocks required to create and maintain life. It logically follows that if we do not receive adequate amounts of nutrients, the human body will lack the raw materials needed to sustain itself. This ultimate-

ly leads to degeneration and disease. Therefore, it should, be self-evident that adequate nutrition is the

first step in resolving health problems. Unfortunately, and to the detriment of human society, modern

medicine does not place enough emphasis on diet. The individual understands that food is key to

his survival, but what may not be clear is what constitutes healthy food. Ideally food fit and ideal for human consumption should be in its natural state without containing foreign and unnatural chemicals. It, follows that processed foods which are what most people consider to be food - are technically not foods that are capable of sustaining life in the long run. The same applies to microwaved foods that have undergone severe nutrient distortion from the bombardment of microwaves. Many people we come across in the clinic consume mostly processed frozen foods that go directly into the microwave and

transformed into 'Gourmet food'. The impact of such a diet over the years is detrimental to the body. Processing foods destroy many nutrients. Microwaves will also strip foods of nutrients and convert nutrients into cancercausing compounds. Such foods cause chronic inflammation which eventually results in all sorts of diseases. Irrespective of what hospitals promote or believe in, your nutrition is an essential part of your health care and should be taken seriously.

Blood-thinning drugs may reduce dementia risk in people with irregular heartbeats Stephen Worthby “Common blood thinning drugs halve the risk of dementia for patients who have an irregular heartbeat,” says recent reports. Researchers in Sweden used the country’s health registry data to assess whether people with a condition called atrial fibrillation were less likely to get dementia if they took drugs such as warfarin. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heartbeat. This can make the blood more likely to clot, which can lead to a stroke. Most people with AF are prescribed anticoagulant drugs which reduce the blood's ability to clot. Anticoagulants are often referred to as “blood-thinning drugs”, but this is technically incorrect as they do not affect the density of blood. People with AF are also at more risk of dementia, proba-

bly because of a build-up of tiny clots in the small blood vessels of the brain. This study showed people with AF who were prescribed anticoagulants within a month of diagnosis had a 29% lower risk of getting dementia, compared to those not given the prescription. However, because of the type of study, the researchers cannot prove that anticoagulants are the reason for the reduced risk. Still, as the researchers point out, the possible reduction in dementia risk is another reason to keep taking anticoagulant drugs if prescribed to you. However, you should not take anticoagulants if you are not at risk of blood clots, because the drugs can increase your risk of bleeding.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

What a fantastic public relations gift for Channel Four on Tuesday presented on a gold platter, with the news that Prue Leith had “mistakenly” put out the winner’s name of the Great British Bake Off on her Twitter account from the other side of the world in Bhutan! Pru had forgotten that there was a time difference between the UK and the Far East, and suddenly the story was leading news bulletins on radio stations and splashed all over the front pages of the Wednesday tabloids. Take it from me, in the PR world, it was wonderful for promoting the show and reminding people on the Tuesday that it was on that evening! Sophie Faldo was a deserving winner and it capped an absolute triumph for Channel Four, who over a year ago, were being spat at for taking the GBBO from the BBC. The reality of course was that Love Productions didn’t want to do a deal with the Beeb and were hawking the show around with Sky being a very serious possibility to

Prue’s Helpful Gaffe

buy it, until Channel Four stepped in to keep the GBBO “free-to-air”. The new personnel on GBBO like Prue, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding have brought something fresh to the show, which has been as good as ever, and defied all the gloomy predictions, including many from yours truly . It has brought fantastic ratings to Channel Four, yet they are well down compared to those on BBC 1, which makes me wonder whether viewers are that dim that they don’t know how to find Channel Four? That can be the only explanation for the “missing millions” who have missed out on a enjoyable weekly treat. I welcome the return of a regular primetime BBC 1 music show, coming over a decade on from the demise of Top of the Pops. Sounds Like Friday Night has a fantastic studio set at the old BBC Television Centre that has a feel of the old TFI Friday set, and some good artists with the likes of Charlie Puth, Jessie Ware, and Jason Derulo on the first show, which I all

enjoyed. My criticism was the waffle and the unfunny attempts at comedy, and just four songs over the 30 minutes, which simply wasn’t good enough. A bit of tinkering though should solve the problem if bosses want to deal with it, otherwise this is a serious wasted opportunity. Tracey Ullman is a fantastic performer with her characters and impressions, and the start of a new

Friday night BBC 1 run of Tracey Does the News had the instant merit of bumping the useless Porridge revival to an earlier time up against an episode of Corrie on ITV. I’m not a fan of Tracey’s Theresa May portrayal, but that was more compensated by her sensational impression of Jeremy Corbyn. Why though is a class act like Ullman dealing with poor scripts that just don’t make

me laugh? If you combined her performance skills with say the satirical bite of the old Spitting Image writing, then it would be must-view television, but at the moment, once you’ve marvelled at what she does, then the novelty wears off in the unfunny sketches. Pat Phelan’s gone on holiday on Coronation Street with his dumb believing wife Eileen, after a couple of

killings at the back end of last week. One taboid newspaper suggested this week that four more deaths are on the way at his evil hands, but am I the only fan that is getting a bit bored with all of this? Soaps tend to stretch things out too long and this plot is a stretch too far. Please ITV, just wrap things up within the next two months, as I’m getting bored with it all.

Finance & Tax Forum – A Success Story The first Finance & Tax Forum was held on 5th October in the wonderful La Laguna Hotel in Quesada. As with any new event, the three companies involved, Currencies Direct, Pellicer & Heredia and ourselves, were slightly nervous as to the outcome. Well, what a wonderful success it was for everyone concerned. The first speaker, Roberto standing in for Ignacio Pellicer from the Spanish lawyers, gave an in-depth insight into the complicated Spanish Tax system for both residents and non-residents. Second on stage was Andrew from Currencies Direct, and he gave the audience an insight into the world of currency transfers as well the background of the company. Lastly, Chris from Seagate Wealth spoke about pensions, the options under Pension Freedom legislation, as well as tracing lost pensions. The second topic he dealt with was how to beat the low interest rates offered by banks with an insight into a Spanish Tax Compliant savings bond offered by one of the UK’s foremost financial services organisation. Once all the presentations were completed, coffee was taken and this was where the audience got to chat to the experts, ask their questions and arrange for follow-up meetings. The feedback from everyone who attended was very positive, as all agreed they had gained new knowledge that would certainly help with their life here in Spain. As everyone seemed to enjoy and benefit from the forum, we have decided to hold another one on Wednesday 8th November. So if you could not attend the last one, or think this might be the ideal opportunity to speak to the local experts, then reserve your place now. Call 965 704 338 or email: Marketing@SeagateWealth.es

Channel 4 commissions series inside U.S. Embassy

Field Day Productions are to produce a three-part observational documentary series inside the U.S. Embassy in London for Channel 4, Current Affairs. Filmed over a six month period, the series will give insight into one of the world’s most important Embassies. The U.S. mission represents the Office of the President of the United States as well as protects as the welfare of its citizens abroad, its business interests and culture, and manages visa applications of would-be visitors to the United States. With a new Ambassador in place, major relocation to a new Embassy site and an effort to strengthen and expand the ‘special relationship’ in the time of Brexit,

Field Day Productions goes behind the scenes to show how a modern U.S. Embassy works at a pivotal moment in history. Dorothy Byrne, Channel 4 Head of News and Current Affairs, who commissioned the series, said ‘‘This is an important landmark observational documentary series which will give viewers a chance to experience a slice of daily life behind the scenes of this influential Embassy.” Field Day Executive Producer Sally Angel said: “We are delighted to be working on our first commission for Channel 4 on a series that will open up the workings of a previously closed piece of America that sits inside the UK."

Volatile Earth

Sheridan

Saturday - BBC Two

Sunday - ITV

The first of three documentaries in which scientists who are experts in the field of natural disasters identify the most extreme catastrophes to have ever occurred on Earth, piecing together the stories of these events via the debris left in their wake. They begin by examining a devastating volcanic eruption from 1250, releasing more sulfur into the atmosphere than any over incident in the past 7,000 years.

This lavish one-off special sees the multi award-winning actress and singer, Sheridan Smith, headline her very own show for the first time. In a celebration of her love of music and performing live, the star of a number of big-hitting ITV shows such as Mrs Biggs and Cilla – for which she won a BAFTA Award – showcases exclusive performances of songs from her new album as well as other musical numbers,

all accompanied by a live orchestra. Sheridan also talks with host

Alexander Armstrong about her life and stratospheric career.

The Railway Man

Gunpowder Saturday - BBC One On the eve of the 5 November, Catesby (Kit Harington), Fawkes (Tom Cullen) and the plotters load the tunnels below Parliament with barrels of gunpowder. Across the city, Father Garnet (Peter Mullan) is under pressure from an ally to break his seal of confession and reveal Catesby’s plot - for the good of the Catholic faith. Will the priest be the one to betray Catesby at the eleventh hour? Or will Cecil (Mark Gatiss) need to find other means to destroy Catesby, win back the King’s trust and save his life? When the plot is discovered, Fawkes is unable to stave

off capture and is hauled before the King - who, after forcing a confession, sentences him to be publicly executed. Catesby and the remaining plotters resolve to stand by their rebellion with

one final, desperate battle against Wade and the King’s men. How will they fare? And what will become of Father Garnet, Anne (Liv Tyler) and Catesby’s young son?

Sunday - Channel 4 A traumatised former prisoner of war gets married, but continues to suffer nightmares about his experiences. He is unable to talk to his wife about his time

in captivity, so she tracks down a fellow hostage to learn the truth - and discovers the cruel Japanese officer he is fixated on is still alive. Fact-based film drama, starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard.

LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW MOVES UP YET ANOTHER GEAR Capital’s super-successful classic car event grows yet again for 2018 Grand Avenue, Car Club Square and Historic Motorsport International return by popular demand Special showcase announced with famous getaway cars from the films

The capital’s biggest and best classic car spectacular – the record-breaking London Classic Car Show – is growing yet again. Now gearing up for its fourth year, the award-winning show – which will be held at ExCeL London from 15-18 February 2018 – will cover a massive 43,000 square metres of exhibition space, up from 36,000 sq. m in 2017, 32,000 sq. m in 2016 and 18,000 sq. m at the inaugural show in 2015. Attendance has soared, too, with more than 37,000 flocking to savour last February’s memorable four-day feast of automotive nostalgia. Indeed, such has been its spiralling popularity with visitors and exhibitors that next year’s enlarged celebration of car culture will for the very first time fill the entire North Hall at ExCeL. “With more than 800 stunning classic cars to display as well as innovative features such as The Grand Avenue and curated car exhibits – plus sister show Historic Motorsport International – we will need every last additional centimetre,” said event director Bas

Bungish. “We need to keep expanding, too, as back in February we had record crowds, recordbreaking displays and record numbers of exhibitors selling cars for record prices. London sits right at the heart of the global classic car movement, and the London Classic Car Show is enhancing the city’s reputation as the world’s classic car capital.” Building on its three previous successes, the 2018 London Classic Car Show will once again feature a number of special displays focusing on classic icons from the past. Last time, it was fabulous Ferraris and pioneering cars from previous motor shows; before that, legendary Le Mans racers and Group B rally cars. For 2018, organisers are lining up a number of special displays, one of which will be Getaway Cars – an evocative homage to those vehicles as used by infamous criminals in headline grabbing robberies, with some of those made famous in films joining the display.

DEL BOY’S ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES THREE-WHEELER UP FOR AUCTION • • •

1968 Reliant Regal which starred in television series 'Only Fools and Horses' for auction. The star of the popular BBC comedy series will be offered at ‘No Reserve’. The iconic van is one of just 135 lots for auction at Silverstone Auctions’ Classic Motor Show Sale at the Birmingham NEC on 11th and 12th

The iconic, yellow Reliant Regal three-wheeler from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ has been consigned by Silverstone Auctions to its two-day classic car sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at the Birmingham NEC on 11th and 12th November.

A star of the legendary BBC series, the 1968 Reliant Regal is one of the most recognisable and loved classic cars of the small screen, transporting Del Boy and Rodney on their many riotous adventures in the smash-hit comedy. 'BWC 94F' was used in the 2002 Christmas Special, ‘If They Could See Us Now’, and also featured in the BBC DVD ‘The Story of Only Fools and Horses’ as well as in several issues of the fanzine "Hookie Street". “Del Boy’s Reliant Regal is one of the most distinctive cars of BBC comedy history! Only Fools and Horses has a fan base spanning several generations and is something of a British treasure, so to have the van from the series for auction is a real treat which will no doubt draw the crowds,” explains Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. Today the van appears exactly as it did on screen, complete with tiger print plush interior and ‘Trotters Independent Trading Co’ decals. Accessories including a "Tax in Post" window notice, nodding tiger, roof rack with suitcase, set of furry dice, personalised rubber foot mats and a set of blow-up plastic dolls. With a reconditioned engine, a full synchromesh gearbox, a remote control key start, a DVD player and cassette radio, and even a smoke machine which emits smoke from the exhaust, it will be offered at the auction with ‘No Reserve’. “Disregarding its TV provenance, it's probably that most reliable example of this 'marque' that you will find and has even participated in the London to Brighton rally in 2001 and 2004,” concludes Nick. With 71,778 miles recorded, the van is supplied with its original owners handbook, an MOT until 9th June 2018 and letters in the history file from the BBC which confirm its authenticity.

By Royal Approval

La Manga Club is celebrating its 45th anniversary in style after joining a select group of Spanish golf courses to have been granted royal status by the royal household, the ‘Casa Real – Royal House’. The Mar Menor golf club has been awarded the title ‘Real Golf La Manga Club’ in recognition of its royal connections and key part in promoting Spanish golf since opening in 1972. A five-time host of the Spanish Open, the accolade, which is only given to golf venues that are at least 25 years old, comes nearly a year after the resort – in conjunction with the national and regional golf federations – first approached the royal house to be considered for the honour to help mark its anniversary. La Manga Club joins some of the most prestigious names in Spanish golf to have been awarded the royal title including Real Club de Sotogrande and Real Club Valderrama, a regular host of the European Tour and venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup.

Start Them Young

The Racing Playas de Orihuela football club may have a senior men’s side in the Valencia Segunda division group 15, but they are just as proud in having an extensive children’s set up with a comprehensive soccer school. It caters for all age ranges under 18, and has both teams for the boys and girls, with age categories starting at five. Pictured are the

Benjamines, who take in eight to ten-year-olds, and they proudly beat Granja Rocamora away from home, four-one with a great footballing display at the weekend. More details on the teams are available by looking them up on Facebook, with the Benjamines also in search of for a sponsor who can provide them with a pitchside sign at the Playa Flamenca ground.

José Asenjo, general manager of La Manga Club, said: “La Manga Club has been at the forefront of promoting Spanish golf, both home and abroad, and to be acknowledged in this way means a huge amount and makes us very proud. “It has been our pleasure and privilege over the last 45 years to have played host to some of the most famous people in the world, including the Spanish royal family on more than one occasion. “La Manga Club is one of the most famous golf, sports and lifestyle destinations in Europe, and to be given this prestigious accolade is a fantastic achievement in what is a special year for the resort.” Gonzaga Escuriaza, president of the Spanish Royal Golf Federation, said: “We are delighted that La Manga Club has received this recognition. The resort, among many other things, has always worked tirelessly to promote golf in Spain and, having hosted many national and internationl championships, the award is very much deserved.”

Tough Conditions

Strong breezes greeted the competitors for the latest SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) Autumn Race day at the CTD Los Alcazares. The windy conditions meant boats were retiring and capsizing all over the place in a dramatic first race which saw Shoestring

Cuatro capsize and Mistral hit a reef, with Shoestring Tres (pictured) eventually taking the race on handicap. It was a Shoestring Tres double for Tug Wilson and John Down, as they also took the second race on handicap in better conditions, they helped to produce an exciting race.

Thader’s Derby Win

CD THADER 1 CD ALMORADI 0 CD TORREVIEJA 2 CALLOSA CF 0 Torrevieja picked themselves up from their Preferente defeat the previous weekend at Pinoso to record a win over Callosa last Sunday lunchtime. The result put them back into second place in the Group Four table, three points behind leaders Hercules. The opening half at the Vicente Garcia stadium had little of creative merit from

either side, but new Torry signing Marwane looked lively, whilst Torry keeper Buyo stopped a great Callosa chance after half an hour. The home side looked a different proposition in the second half producing some entertaining football and crucially creating a string of chances, with Marwane breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute to score on his

debut. Callosa looked for the equaliser, whilst Torry tried to build on their lead, but they had to wait until the 86th minute for Manu to score from a quickly taken free kick which caught the Callosa defenders napping. It’s another Sunday lunchtime date for Torrevieja this weekend as they travel to Redovan for an 11.30 pm kick-off.

After three successive draws, Thader got their second win of the Preferente Group Four season to keep them one point above the relegation zone, as they beat in-form local rivals Almoradi on Sunday, who nevertheless kept their seventh league position. Almoradi went into this clash in Rojales with confidence, but Thader looked stronger in the first half in

spite of Hucha having the best of the chances for the visitors in the 33rd minute. Almoradi suffered a blow early in the second half as keeper Vivancos had to go off with injury in the 55th minute. Vivancos was replaced by Kike, who just four minutes later was picking the ball out of the net, as he was beaten all ends by Quino’s strike. Subsitutes Rivera for

Almoradi and May for Thader both had opportunites to get their names onto the scoresheet, and Almoradi’s Saul got his marching orders for a second yellow card with four minutes remaining. This Sunday Almoradi entertain Villena with an 11.30 am kick-off, whilst Thader have an encounter at third-placed Alicante University.

FIVE STAR MONTE

SAN GABRIEL 1 CD MONTESINOS 5

Third Division News

Orihuela lie second in the Valencia regional third division after their latest two fixtures which included a full programme of matches on Wednesday’s bank holiday. Perhaps disappointingly they could only draw oneall two days ago at lowly Paterna, with Jose Carlos putting Orihuela in front

before half-time. On Sunday, Orihuela recorded a one-nil victory over Buñol (action pictured), with Antonio getting the goal in the 69th minute. Next up is a match at home to Almazora with an 11.30 am kick-off. Crevillente won one-nil at bottom-of-the-table club Borriol at the weekend, and

then drew one-one in midweek with Recambios Colon to leave them in 10th position in the table, with a Sunday trip to leaders La Nucia to come. Elche Ilicitano are fourth bottom and entertain Buñol this Sunday, on the back of a one-one result at Alzira, with no match for them on Wednesday.

After losing to Valencia Primera Group Eight leaders UD Horadada in a somewhat flattering three-nil scoreline the previous weekend, Montesinos carried through their good play to flatten the third-place Alicante-based side San Gabriel last Sunday to show that they can more than hold their own at this level. Monte had a great start with a Carlos Ventura tapping in a close range chance in the third minute, and then keeper Dani produced a great double penalty save on the half hour as a key turning point in the

game. Five minutes later Manuel Sanchez put Monte two-nil up, but straight from the restart the home side pulled one back with a fierce shot that gave Dani no chance. Monte though created chances in the first period, and after the break, a Vaz overhead kick set up Carlos Ventura for his second, and a few minutes later, Vaz scored himself to put Monte four-one ahead. The only way Monte were going to lose were through something out of their control and a 15-minute floodlight failure had fans biting

their fingernails wondering if the match would be abandoned as it was difficult to see one corner of the pitch. Play continued and with the light restored, Luis got Monte’s fifth to send everybody home happy, though San Gabriel squandered a couple of good chances, whilst at the other end, Vaz missed a sitter of his own. It was hugely impressive stuff from Monte, who now look for some home fireworks this Sunday early evening when they entertain CD Altet on November 5th, with kick-off taking place at 5.00 pm.

No Goal Barca

Miserable Madrid

Return To Form

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3 REAL MADRID 1

OLYMPIAKOS 0 BARCELONA 0 Barcelona failed to score in a Champions League group stage game for the first time in five years in Greece on Tuesday night. Luis Suarez hit the crossbar as Barcelona sought to secure the win that would qualify them for the knock-out stage with two games remaining. The striker then unselfishly tried to tee up Lionel Messi instead of going for goal himself after an hour. Barca top Group D by three points after Juventus drew 1-1 with Sporting Lisbon. Ernesto Valverde, who was making a return to his former club, has now guided his Barca side to 10 points from four matches. Only a point is required from their last two games against Juventus and Sporting to guarantee a place in the last 16.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was left to count the cost of a bad week for his side, as Spurs tore them apart in the latest Champions League group match on Wednesday night. A Dele Alli brace and a goal from Christian Eriksen gave the north London outfit a memorable Wembley victory over the Champions League holders and secured their qualification for the knockout phase of the competition, whilst Real will have to wait. Zidane said. ‘We came up against the superior team. They were better in every aspect.’ ‘We’ve lost a Champions League match tonight, that’s two defeats and obviously we’re not happy about it. In terms of the state of mind for the team, it’s not good. We’re going through a bad moment.’ The knives appear to be out for Zidane in the Spanish media, with pundits condemning Wednesday’s performance as being the worst since he took charge of the side.

ELCHE 2 CD EBRO 1 A late winner from Javi Flores prompted great celebrations on Wedensday lunchtime, as Elche recorded two league wins in four days to rekindle their early push for promotion from Segunda Division B. The result means they are six points leaders Mallorca in second position, and a point clear of third-placed Villarreal, who they just happen to go to this Sunday lunchtime. Elche dominated the first half but could not score, with a Nino shot hitting the crossbar. He put the Ilicitanos in front five minutes after the interval with a well executed goal, but Mainz levelled things up eight minutes later. Elche laid seige on the Ebro goal for the last quarter of an hour, and were rewarded with five minutes remaining, as Flores netted from an Edu Albacar cross.

A Real Surprise

Keeper’s Victory

Happy Away Day

GIRONA 2 REAL MADRID 1

ATHLETIC BILBAO 0 BARCELONA 2 Sergio Busqets believes Barcelona have goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen (pictured) to thank for their weekend victory over Athletic Bilbao. Lionel Messi and Paulinho were the names of the scoresheet as the La Liga leaders maintained their four-point advantage at the top of the table, but Ter Stegen's contribution was arguably as valuable. At least two of his saves were worth a goal apiece, denying Aritz Aduriz from a one-on-one position at 0-0 and producing a brilliant diving effort from the same opponent with five minutes still to play. “The victory is his," said midfielder Busquets. "He was key to the win and we are happy to have him with us." Barca entertain fifth-placed Sevilla this Saturday evening.

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid's La Liga title defence is not over after a shock loss to Girona left them eight points behind Barcelona. Isco gave Real an early lead on Sunday but Cristhian Stuani equalised for the minnows in the 54th minute and Portu netted a stunning winner four minutes later. Zidane said: "We lost three points, and we are eight behind, but nothing is going to change. Real can come back, we will have better days and our rivals will drop points." "I don't think we played badly," said the Frenchman. "We did not lack intensity, we tried hard, but that's why the defeat bothers me. It's more to do with lack of concentration. Their first goal was from a throw-in and we were not focused." Real are at home to struggling Las Palmas this Sunday evening.

UE CORNELLA 0 ELCHE 1 Elche coach Vicente Mir had to miss the trip to Cornella on Sunday after he was hospitalised with stomach pains, but he got the perfect tonic with a victory, coming off the back of two league defeats and two poor performances. There was no doubt that Elche’s draw with Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey put an extra spring into their step, and they got the only goal on the stroke of half-time through Iván Sánchez. As expected, Cornella pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half, and it seemed to be there from Gallego, only for Primi to make a fantastic clearance off the line, as the local fans were already cheering the leveller. Elche hung onto the lead and the points, with the Wednesday match to come at home to Ebro (see above).

Lewis Hamilton said he felt "at peace" after clinching his fourth F1 drivers title with ninth place at Sunday’s Mexican Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver fought back through the field after getting a puncture when he was hit by title rival Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari on the first lap. But the German could manage only fourth place, not enough to keep the fight alive. Hamilton said: "It's very surreal. Hard to believe. I feel incredibly grateful and at peace in my heart." The 32-year-old became the only British driver to win four Formula 1 world championships, moving one clear of Sir Jackie Stewart. But he said the impact of his success was taking time to sink in. "Honestly, really don't know, man," he said. "I grew up in Stevenage. This is all beyond my wildest dreams. "I never thought this… the possibility of even getting into F1 was so far-fetched, so to think now I have four world championships…” "I am trying to represent the British flag as proudly as possible. I won't give up. There is more to go."

Rugby Round Up

ITV Orihuela Vega Baja (pictured in their yellow-black kit) made it two wins out of two in the senior mens FERRMUR Murcia league, as they beat the Mar Menor Squalos by 20-5 at the Universidad Miguel Hernández stadium in Orihuela. The Orihuela victory backs up their opening day victory at Totana, whilst it was two defeats out of two outings for the Squalos, but they were far more competitive than in their comprehensive first loss at the University of Cartagena. Orihuela are at the top of the table with eight points alongside the University of Cartagena and XV Rugby Murcia. The next round of games comes next weekend (11/12th November) with Orihuela entertaining Murcia University, whilst the Squalos take on Lorca.

Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso won a dramatic and damp Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday to keep his MotoGP world title hopes afloat after championship leader, Spain’s Marc Marquez finished fourth. “Yes, I am happy to keep my championship challenge alive,” Dovizioso said. The Italian adopted a cool strategy and worked hard to stay in the front pack as a downpour just before the start left standing water on much of the Sepang circuit. Dovizioso, who now has six wins this season, quickly defused speculation that teammate Jorge Lorenzo had been under orders to let him through at turn 15 when the Spaniard was in the lead. “He lost the front. I (also) lost the front many times,” the Italian said. Dovizioso who started on the front row, crossed the line in 44 minutes 51.497 seconds. Lorenzo was 0.743 seconds slower while Frenchman Johann Zarco was third at 45:01.236. Dovizioso, 31, won at Sepang last year in similar wet conditions Lorenzo said he pushed hard for victory but lost his grip in lap 15 when he tried to break. Asked if there had been any team instructions to let Dovizioso win, he told reporters: “Honestly, I did not see anything. In the rain you cannot lose any concentration.” “I wanted to win the race but was not prepared to do something crazy. I lost grip in the front in turn 15. I thought I was going to crash. I did not want to crash into Dovizioso.” Spain’s Marquez, who started from the third row on a Honda and was under intense pressure to wrap up the championship battle in Malaysia, quickly moved up to third in a fast-riding pack led by Zarco but could not maintain his pace on the wet track. The riders will meet in Valencia on November 12th for the final showdown, with Marquez leading Dovizioso by 21 points.

FIREWORKS AT THE BRIDGE

Rafael Nadal will end 2017 as world number one after a second-round win over Hyeon Chung at the Paris Masters this week. "It was impossible for me to think about when you are coming back from a tough time, without playing tennis and with so many injuries," the Spanish ace said. Nadal is the oldest player to finish a campaign at world number one since they were introduced in 1973.

ANDY OUT

Britain's Andy Tennant has withdrawn from the upcoming Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester following his crash at the European Track Championships. Tennant, 30, suffered concussion after a heavy fall in team pursuit qualifying in Berlin last month. He left the track on a stretcher and took no further part in the Championships. "I'm disappointed I'm unable to race in a home World Cup, but I need to prioritise my health," he said.

Champions League fixtures mean that the Premier League big boys have until an extra wait until Sunday November 5th for their matches, with plenty of fireworks expected, including a stern test for off-the-rails champions Chelsea who entertain Manchester United, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. Chelsea go into the game low on confidence following a terrible 3-0 defeat to Roma in the Champions League at the Stadio Olimpico. Antonio Conte's side were already under pressure to win against Manchester United, who are above them in the table, due to the form of runaway leaders Manchester City. And what don’t they need now? Old boss Jose Mourinho popping up to rub salt into an ever-growing Blues wound! Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois says that it could be “game over” for the Blues if they lose, and we are only talking about the first weekend of November! "This is a must-win game,” commented Courtois. “Manchester City are already nine points ahead of us, Manchester United four and Tottenham one.”

"We must win games like these to remain at the top and close to the other ones. We will try to get the three points and will give our lives for it on Sunday." Leaders Manchester City entertain inconsistent Arsenal at the Etihad, and talk-of-the-town Spurs, on the back of their Real Madrid demolition job on Wednesday have a mauling of lowly Crystal Palace in their sights. Pochettino’s boys seem to be getting to grips with their temporary Wembley home, and that spells serious danger for Roy Hodgson’s struggling Palace this Sunday lunchtime. The tastiest of the Saturday matches is the late fixture at the London Stadium as West Ham welcome Liverpool, who have hit top gear in the Champions League. Hammers boss Bilic is next in the Premier League firing line after the sackings at Leicester and Everton, and with West Ham not having won a league match since September, a big loss to Klopp’s Reds could be curtains for the Croatian.

FORWARD PLANNING Champions New Zealand (pictured celebrating in 2015) will begin their quest for a third successive Rugby World Cup title against South Africa in Yokohama. The fixtures for the 2019 World Cup which takes place in Japan, were announced yesterday. England, who failed to reach the knockout stages of their own tournament in 2015, play Tonga first in Pool C. Ireland and Scotland will meet in their opening game in Pool A while Wales begin against Georgia in Pool D. Hosts Japan kick off the tournament against Europe's top qualifier. England will play their fixtures in Sapporo, Kobe, Tokyo and Yokohama with Wales in Aichi, Tokyo, Oita and Kumamoto. Ireland have games in Yokohama, Shizuoka, Kobe and Fukoka while Scotland visit Yokohama twice, Kobe and Shizuoka. The World Cup will take place between September 20th and November 2nd 2019.
