rihuela council will not automatically extend the beach bars contract for the Orihuela Costa which is scheduled to end at Easter next year, after an Orihuela judge’s report suggested that the awarding of the contract back in 2014 “could lead people to suspect that it may have been criminal in character”. Orihuela’s beaches councillor Luisa Boné announced this week that the authority would not implement a two-year extension option to the deal with Chiringuitos del Sol because of the legal investigations that are going on. uthorities say over 500 migrants were saved by rescue boats purely over the weekend period, as they attempted the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea from Africa, in the biggest wave of arrivals seen this year, which brings the national total of sea migrant people coming to Spain to over 15 thousand in 2017. Almost 90 migrants arrived off the Alicante Province coast between Friday and Tuesday night. Murcia, said over 400 migrants arrived at Cartagena on Saturday after being pulled off of 44 different boats between Friday and Saturday, including one craft off the coast of Pilar de la Horadada, which
had 10 people on board, including two children. The boats were reportedly launched from Algeria and, like in the case of Alicante Province, the Cruz Roja were deployed to Cartagena to attend to the migrants.

A complaint has been filed with the Prosecutor's Office over the state of Torrevieja bus station including issues like security, drug taking, and even sex acts being performed in the toilets. The Información newspaper reports that an extensive dossier has been submitted outlining a whole host of deficiencies at the facility including poor access to the station for both pedestrians and vehicles; difficulties in finding the right window to buy the appropriate ticket; in addition to problems like simply discovering where the appropriate bus departs from.
The complaint also refers to the lack of a tannoy system; poor disabled access; and a lack of security staff to deal with issues. The dossier includes photographs and video footage, and condemns the state and security of the toilets, and refers to an incident where a parent took his child to use the loo, and discovered a "group" of people having sex in the lavatory. Información has reported that extra warning signs have appeared since the start of November (the complaint was filed on November 8th), but little has changed otherwise at the station.

Wasteful Water The San Miguel de Salinas Arcángel residents association has slammed the area’s water company, Gestagua, for letting a stream of water flow down Calle Joaquin Ortuño, which was coming from two company workers washing down the front of the Gestagua offices, using two hoses. The association said that the behaviour of Gestagua was hypocritical at a time when everybody is concerned about low rainfall and the possibility of water
rationing. “This was a waste of taxpayers money and displayed the lack of sensitivi-
ty by the company at a time like this,” added the association in a statement to the press.
Drugs House Raid Six Spanish nationals have been arrested for selling heroin and cocaine out of a central Torrevieja property. The Guardia Civil raid on the address came after an extensive investigation, with the gang switching their base in a failed bid to outwit the authorities. Thirty grams of cocaine and heroin worth around sixteen-hundred euro on the open market were discovered at the undisclosed property, in addition to thirteen-hundred euro of cash, and some drug-cutting equipment.
The three men and three women were denied bail, after being charged with public health offences and belonging to a criminal
gang. It's the sixth successful raid on drugs houses in Torrevieja this year, which has seen 23 arrests.

A 53-year-old homeless Finnish man died in the arrivals terminal of AlicanteElche airport on Sunday night, after falling from an escalator. The incident happened at around 10.30 pm, and video
footage examined by the National Police showed him losing his balance, and he suffered a fatal head injury in the fall. The Información newspaper reports that the man had lived at the airport for around four months.
Two dogs died and six people were injured in a collision between two vehicles in Elche, with a driver testing positive for alcohol and
drugs. The incident happened on Sunday morning with the man’s car crashing into a vehicle that was also pulling a trailer, which had
three dogs in it. Two animals died instantly in the crash, with authorities trying to find a third that ran away after the collision.

Suspended Dealer
A Torrevieja drug dealer has been given a three-year jail term, suspended for five years, for public health offences and ordered to pay 141 euro in compensation to a vet, who had to treat several dogs that had eaten some drugs that he had thrown away in trying to escape. The suspended sentence is subject to the man not reoffending over five years,
as well as attending a drug treatment programme. The incident happened in February 2016 when the Guardia Civil arrived at the Torrevieja address to deal with an incident where he was threatening to kill a woman with a knife over a debt. Officers discovered a quantity of drugs when they arrived at the premises, and the man escaped by breaking a window and going
onto the roof, where he threw away a plastic bag containing some drugs. The bag, containing cannabis and cocaine, landed down on a terrace and was pounced upon by the dogs, who were poisoned and required veterinary treatment. The convicted man was also ordered to pay 260 euro for the cost of a new window.
Cabbies Protest A national strike by taxi drivers has been called for next Wednesday (November 29th) over the lack of regulation over car-pooling companies like Uber and Cabify. It’s unclear as to how cabbies in Alicante Province and the Murcia region will join in the 24-hour protest. The taxi drivers federation, Fedetaxi, has called for an urgent meeting with the Secretary of State for Transport, Julio GómezPomar, after a Supreme Court verdict ordered the ministry to grant 80 permits to firms which offer hired cars with drivers. Gómez-Pomar said his department intended to 'forge ahead' with a new law
allowing these permits to be granted, but that the new law would contain 'strict antifraud measures' and a 'national register' with 'complete route maps for each

The UK’s ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, was at Elche University this week to speak at an event about the progress of Brexit negotiations and the future relationship between the UK and Spain. The event, organised in conjunction with British citizens in Spain group Brexpats and the Alicante
Provincial Council, saw a discussion about citizens’ rights and how that is one of the top priorities for the British Government in the negotiations with the EU. Manley said: “Good progress has already been made in the negotiations and we are within touching distance of a deal in citizens rights. My team of consular
staff and I have been speaking face to face with British citizens across Spain to ensure that the concerns they raise around healthcare, pensions and residency rights are understood by the UK negotiating team and reflected in their discussions with our EU partners about our departure from the EU.”

An Unwanted Record
Torrevieja’s indoor Olympic swimming pool at the Palacio de los Deportes reopened for business yesterday after being closed for the last year. The popular facility (pic-
ture from Objectivo Torrevieja) had been shut down by Torrevieja council last autumn for urgent maintenance work, which has included a revamp of the filtration system.
120 thousand euro has been spent on stopping leaks around the glass at the facility, which has announced longer opening hours compared to the normal winter schedule.
Crash Fatality
November is set to go down on record as being the driest in 36 years, according to the State meteorological agency, AEMET, unless heavy rainfall changes the picture in the last few days. December, according to AEMET forecasts, is expected to be much warmer than usual, meaning little hope for rain next month, either.
It will mean the final quarter of 2017 is set to become the driest since records began in their present form in 1941. The pressure on water supplies to farmers is likely to intensify with reservoirs nationally at a low of 37 percent capacity, which is the poorest figure in 22 years. The picture is even worse in reservoirs like La Pedrera
(pictured) which serve Alicante Province and the Murcia region. The driest November on record was in 1981, and 2017 is likely to be somewhere near this if there is little or no rain over the next few days. The driest November so far this century was in 2009, when temperatures were also higher than usual.
A 57-year-old Swedish man died and three other people were slightly injured early on Thursday morning, when two cars collided on
the A-7 motorway, in the San Isidro area. Firefighters from Elche and Crevillente attended the scene after the crash hap-
pened at 1.26 am. They spent over four hours releasing two women who were trapped inside their car.

Historical Looters
Thousands of archaeological gems have been found in a house in San Fernando in Cádiz province in southern Spain, which the owners had been selling on eBay and specialist antique auction sites, after getting them from the Murcia area. The haul dates from between the prehistoric Phoenician era to the First Republic of Spain in the 19th century, and the pair had so far made around 103,000
euro from online sales, mostly abroad. They had sold over 5,000 pieces by the time the Guardia Civil found out. According to authorities, the woman – who went by the online auction site username of Lorec Win – had been in direct contact with a racket involved in pillaging historical digs in the Murcia region. They are believed to have had a mutual 'trading relationship'.
She and her husband still had numerous lots for sale via different usernames and accounts. The thousands of items confiscated included kilos of coins (Roman to Mediaeval era), ceramic pottery – some from under the sea and likely to be Roman – keys, beads, thimbles, rings, bullets, embalming jars and buttons. All the items have been donated to Cádiz city's museum.

A Breach Of Trust
The Elche trial at the Alicante Provincial Court (pictured) of an Orihuela man who is accused of raping his daughter every night for four years from the age of nine, has been delayed for a few weeks. That’s because prosecuting and defence lawyers are negotiating over a deal where the man admits his guilt in return for a slightly
reduced prison sentence. Prosecutors have demanded a 12-year-jail term for the crime of sexually abusing an under-13 aged child. The abuse apparently took place for four years on a nightly basis, with the mother being unaware of what was going on at a variety of places that they lived at, until they moved to a property in Orihuela.
The father is accused of intimidating the child into not saying anything, and any reduced jail term would also come with a restraining order keeping him away from his daughter, as well paying out financial compensation. Doctors have produced a report outlining the physical and mental traumas that the teenager went through.
Tapas And More
The streets of Rojales and Quesada should be cleaned quicker and more efficiently, as Rojales council officially unveiled their latest purchase, the Piquersa BA 2000 road-sweeper. The machine can clear an
area of up to 10 thousand square metres an hour and can pick up objects as big as a one and half litre capacity bottle. The next-generation sweeper is also very environmentally friendly, as it
uses just a mere two litres of fuel an hour, as opposed to the previous five litres of the old machines. The Piquersa is also said to be much more comfortable for the man, or woman, behind its wheel.
The Entre Naranjos urbanisation in the Orihuela municipality is to host another tapas route day, according to Orihuela tourism councillor Sofía Álvarez. Álvarez said that the first event staged at the end of October had been a “resounding success”, and had “brought a large influx of visitors to an area where 3,000 British nationals live”. The councillor also reported back on Orihuela’s presence at the World Travel Market fair in London earlier in the month, with several deals struck with tour operators that would benefit both the Orihuela area and the Costa Blanca region. “Something of benefit to
tourists coming to Orihuela is the use of QR codes for a new walking route around the city,” added Álvarez. “It
allows visitors to download all the details about sites and buildings of interest onto their mobile phones.”

Facing The Music
The High Court in Madrid has ordered the former boss of the IMF, Rodrigo Rato, to stand trial for fraud over the failed 2011 listing of Bankia, a bank he led which later needed rescuing by the state. Rato, a former economy minister, is accused of falsifying information about Bankia's finances to encourage investors to buy into its stock market listing. He will stand trial along with 30 other former Bankia
executives for investor fraud and for falsifying the accounts from 2010 and 2011, the High Court concluded in its ruling. The court will also put Bankia itself, and its parent company BFA, on trial over the failed listing, as well as accounting firm Deloitte and one of its employees. Deloitte audited the lender's accounts. Bankia was rescued in 2012, less than a year after it was listed, and tens of
thousands of small investors who had converted their savings to shares lost everything. The near-collapse of Bankia almost brought down Spain's whole financial sector, which was bailed out later that year by international creditors for 41 billion euro. Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that "serious inaccuracies" in the information provided by Bankia misled investors.
Carry On Claiming
A Madrid woman who claimed the state pension of her dead mother for over three decades, is one of a number of fraud cases that the National Police have pursued with the Social Security office under Operation Libitina. Sixty-two people have been investigated, resulting in a total of 19 charged with fraud worth almost two million euro for claiming the pensions of dead relatives. In Alicante Province, two people were arrested for still picking up a pension of a deceased family member for over a decade. In nearly all the cases, the National Police found that the relatives assumed false identities or used fake papers to carry on claim-
ing after any family death, with, in some cases, authorities discovering that those who committed a crime had actually passed away themselves in the intervening period. The most dramatic fraud example came from Madrid, where the daughter of a deceased woman claimed over 173,000 euro between March 1985 and October 2016, using all kinds of bogus or fake documents allegedly authorised to keep the fraud going. In another case, a woman told National Police officers that she was still claiming her mother’s pension because she “had not come to terms with her death� and that she was still legally entitled to claim it.

Level Big Cocaine Seizures Playing Field
The Guardia Civil and the Moroccan police have netted close to four tonnes of cocaine with a street value of over 100 million euro and arrested 40 people in a longterm anti-trafficking operation. The interior ministry in Madrid said that 1.3 tonnes of the drug and more than 13 million euro in cash had been seized in Spain since the launch of the joint operation last year. Morocco's DGST domestic intelligence service meanwhile said it had seized 2.6 tonnes of cocaine in the joint operation, which had input from US, Italian and German law enforcement agencies.
Madrid said the operation had "dismantled a major criminal organisation based in Spain and Morocco, directed from Venezuela by a wanted Spanish national". In all, 34 men and six women of Spanish, British and Moroccan nationalities were arrested as part of the operation. One Spanish national was detained in Germany "while trying to flee to Venezuela", the ministry said. It added that the amount of cocaine seized could have been sold in Spain for "more than 103 million euro. Spain is a main entry point for cocaine in Europe, and the busts are some of the biggest in recent years.
Thousands of police officers packed Madrid's most famous square on Saturday to demand higher salaries and better working conditions. The National Police and Civil Guard members were asking for the same pay received by their regional equivalents in Catalunya and the Basque country, as well as claiming that they get lower rates compared to local police officers across
Spain. Many waved Spanish flags in the crowd that filled Madrid's Puerta del Sol square. Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido responded by pledging to seek a leveling of salaries for the police forces by 2018. Zoido says "what our National Police and Guardia Civil officers are asking for is a just cause because they deserve it."

Torrevieja councillor Fanny Serrano (pictured left) attended the official launch of the popular event, with 45 restaurants and bars taking part in the latest event with 180 different dishes being offered.
Two types of tapas will be on sale at two euro and two euro fifty, with the promotions available on each day between noon and 5.00 pm, and 7.30 pm through till 11.00 pm. Diners can also vote for their favourite tapas dish via a special mobile phone app, Ruta de la Tapa Torrevieja, with a chance to win a variety of prizes supplied by local companies.

A Christmas Help Day The HELP Vega Baja Association have launched a Christmas Appeal in addition to providing all-year-round help to support people in need. The charity is appealing for people to join them to make Christmas a little better for those who do not have the resources to buy fresh food or any “treats” for Christmas by helping to fill the charity shopping trolley with food to be distributed for the holiday season. HELP are also looking to collect gifts for the elderly who may be alone throughout the festivities. HELP President Michele Masson said:- “By working closely with social services, we are aware that there are many families in the area who struggle, particularly at this time of the year, and with the support of the community we would like to do something to show that that
they are not forgotten. If everyone, for example, bought just one item for the trolley, it could make such a huge difference. In addition, a small gift included on your list for an elderly person would help them see that people are thinking of them.” A variety of local businesses like Hamilton’s Bakery in Benijófar;

Taking the dog for a walk should be enjoyable and fun. After all, it's a major part of having a dog. But for some people, their dog's behaviour makes walking a misery - they dread doing it and are glad when it's over. The process of going for a walk then leads to stress for all involved - human and dog - and a vicious cycle begins as the dog's behaviour gets worse due to the human's anxiety. That's not right and it doesn't need to be this way, as we will look at over the next few weeks. So, if you have problems when walking your dog, you are not alone, and the first thing is: stop doing it! But don't panic, this doesn't mean you'll never take your dog for a walk ever again and it doesn't mean you have permission to stay in and watch TV or play computer games instead. Far from it. As an alternative, spend the time you would normally waste on a miserable walk going back to some basic training, preparing to go back into the big wide world again. This might take a few days or a few weeks and missing full-length walks for this amount of time won't matter. Many people will be perturbed by the thought of not taking the dog for a full walk every day and will worry that their dog will be hyperactive or unsettled at not getting their daily exercise. This simply isn't true. Depending on how much time you want to spend on it, doing the training work below can give you plenty of exercise! And you'll be doing something positive for the future: a short-term sacrifice for long-term benefit for the lifetime of your dog. At all times, before you even leave the house, remember that you are the leader and the decision maker. This means that you decide when it's time to go for a walk. If you have a very set routine and your dog knows when it's walk time and starts demanding your attention when he thinks it's time to go, then it's time to break that pattern and change the routine. Start getting ready a little earlier, before he expects it, or ignore his demands until you are ready to go.

We'd expect any dog to be keen and interested in going for a walk but if your dog goes really crazy as you start to get ready (putting on your shoes or coat), picking up the lead or even when you say the magic word "walk", you can desensitise him to this. Start to put your shoes or coat on, pick up the lead or say "walk" but pay no attention to your dog's reaction and go and do something else for a few minutes. This is not teasing your dog but teaching him that these triggers don't actually mean anything anymore. When he sees there's no point in getting really hyped up, he won't bother. But if you continue to feed into a ritual by continuing to go ahead with the walk, you'll never break that cycle. So, carry on getting ready, stopping whenever the dog gets over-excited again and you'll find you can gradually get a bit further each time you try. When you've had enough or are running out of time, you can finish the training and have some fuss or play with your dog, some quality time together and feel like you've achieved something, however small, towards enjoyable walks in the future. The same applies when it comes to putting on the lead. You shouldn't have to catch a moving target to do this. It doesn't matter whether your dog sits or stands while you put the lead on, as long as he restrains his excitement and isn't jumping up, whirling around etc. Call your dog to you first and stop what you're doing as soon as he starts fidgeting, jumping etc. Don't say anything or look at him, just stand back and wait for him to work out what he needs to do. You might want to try a "3 strikes and you're out" approach. Stop and wait twice, then when he gets it wrong a third time, put the lead down, walk away and do something else for a few minutes, or until you're ready to try again. However, when he gets it right and lets you put the lead on calmly and smoothly, don't forget to praise him for that. Next week, we’ll look at what you should do as you walk out of the door!

The Catalan equivalent of the Guardia Civil shot and injured an unarmed man on Saturday at a toll station near the French border (stock picture of Mossos border check at La Jonquera) with officers saying that he was shouting ‘Allahu akbar.’ The Mossos officers mistakenly suspected he had a weapon, a statement said, adding that no terrorism investigation was being opened. The man, of Moroccan origin, was travelling with a
woman in a vehicle registered in France and approached the toll by the border town of La Jonquera in the early hours of Saturday morning. A Mossos patrol was alerted because the man had a “strange” attitude and “seemed to be manipulating something inside the vehicle”. “The Mossos asked him to get out. He finally got out with something in his hands and he moved towards the officers,” said a spokesperson.
The spokesperson said that, according to the officers present, the man “shouted ‘Allahu akbar' (God is greatest)”. “The officers repeatedly asked him to stop, and fired a shot in the air to intimidate him, but as he continued to move forward, they shot him in the hip.” The man “then undressed” and “appeared to suffer from mental problems”. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment to the injuries suffered.

85g dried red lentils 2 carrots, quartered lengthways then diced 3 sticks celery, sliced 2 small leeks, sliced 2 tbsp tomato purée 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves 3 chopped garlic cloves 1 tbsp vegetable bouillon powder 1 big tsp ground coriander
Tip the lentils and vegetables into a large pan with the tomato purée, thyme, garlic, bouillon powder and coriander. Pour over 1½ litres boiling water from the kettle, then stir well. Cover and leave to simmer for 30 mins until the vegetables and lentils are tender. Ladle into bowls and eat

Lamb Vindaloo
Ingredients 500g lamb neck fillet, cubed 120ml rapeseed oil 250g onions, sliced 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 25g ginger, roughly chopped 1 medium potato, diced 240ml stock (depending on the meat you’re using), warmed through 10g coriander, chopped, plus extra leaves to serve wilted greens and lightly fried red onion, to serve For the curry paste 2 tsp cardamom pods shelled, seeds only 2 tsp cloves
2 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted 1 tsp turmeric 1 tbsp malt vinegar 40g dried red chillies (adjust quantity to your taste) Method Blend the paste ingredients in a blender or bash using a pestle and mortar until smooth and combined. Rub half the paste into the lamb neck, cover and chill in the fridge overnight. Heat most of the oil in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and ginger, cook slowly until the onion is translucent, then add the remaining
curry paste and mix well. Cook your spices for a few mins, allowing the flavours to really open up. Decrease the heat, fold the potato into your mix, season well and cook for 5 mins. Add the stock and simmer on a low heat until the potato is cooked, then lightly crush it. Add the chopped coriander, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Chill in the fridge overnight. The next day, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan. Season the lamb, brown it all over and cook until tender. Reheat the sauce, and add the lamb and any juices. Serve topped with coriander, with some wilted greens and fried red onion on the side. Prep: 30 Mins Cook: 1 Hour Serves: 4 - 6
Pineapple & Rum Cake Ingredients 200g fresh pineapple chunks 75g dark chocolate, chopped 160g unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus extra for the tin 120g golden caster sugar ½ tsp five spice 30ml milk 2 tbsp dark rum 3 large eggs 160g self-raising flour For the lime icing 75g unsalted butter, at room temperature 125g icing sugar ½ lime, juiced For the meringue 300g golden caster sugar 25g liquid glucose 4 large egg whites Method Heat oven to 180ºC/160ºC fan/gas 4. Tip the pineapple
onto a non-stick baking tray and roast for 20 mins – this concentrates the flavour. Leave the pineapple to cool before roughly chopping into smaller chunks. Melt the chocolate in a microwave or in a saucepan set over simmering water, then tip onto a piece of baking parchment and spread it out in a thick layer. Leave to set. Butter a 20 x 30cm baking tin and line with baking parchment. Beat the butter and sugar together until light and creamy. Add the five spice, milk and rum, and mix together. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, adding the flour in three batches between the eggs, and fold in the pineapple. Scrape the cake mixture into the baking tin and bake for 20 mins, or until just cooked through and lightly browned. Leave in the tin for 10 mins, then lift out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Cut the cake in half widthways. Beat the butter for the icing until soft, then stir in the icing sugar, followed by the lime juice. You should end up with a soft, spreadable buttercream. Add a little more icing sugar if it’s too soft. For the meringue, put the sugar, 65ml water and the glucose in a heavy pan on a medium heat and stir to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil, and use a sugar thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. Put the egg whites in a stand mixer and whisk over a medium speed. When the
temperature of the syrup reaches 118ºC, steadily pour it in a thin stream into the stiff egg whites, and continue whisking until completely cold. Scoop the meringue into a piping bag fitted with a plain round nozzle. Can be made up to three days in advance and kept in the fridge. Put one half of the cake on a flat ovenproof serving plate or baking sheet. Spread a little of the icing over the cake and sandwich the other half on top. Now, imagine you are looking down onto a pineapple that is lying down and cut each corner off the cake to make it look like a barrel – a bread knife works best here. Trim off the sharp top edges to round the top, then coat the cake with a thin layer of the remaining icing Pipe dots of meringue all over the cake so it looks like a pineapple. Brown the meringue with a blowtorch or put it in an oven, turned up as high as it will go, and keep an eye on it until it starts to brown. Cool completely. Cut the cooled chocolate into shards about 5-10cm long, and push them into one end of the cake so they look like pineapple leaves. Prep: 45 Mins

New Trackable Pill Knows When It’s Being Taken And Can Talk To Doctors US regulators are allowing doctors to use the first intuitive medicine, which knows whether or not it has been taken. The “trackable” pill can talk to doctors and tell them whether their patients have taken the drugs they need. The pill was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2002 to treat schizophrenia, and the sensor technology was allowed to be marketed in 2012. Now the FDA says the two can work together – by sending a message from a sensor in the pill to a patch the patient wears – to digitally-enhance people’s treatment.
“Being able to track ingestion of medications prescribed for illness may be useful for some patients,” Dr Mitchell Mathis of the FDA said in statement. “The FDA supports the development and use of new technology in prescription drugs and is committed to working with companies to understand how this technology might benefit patients and prescribers.” Greenlighting the new digital version, however, came with some caveats. While the system can track doses, it hasn’t been shown to improve patient compliance, the FDA said. “Abilify MyCite should not be
used to track drug ingestion in ‘real-time’ or during an emergency,” the statement said, “because detection may be delayed or may not
occur.” Patients can track their dosage on their smartphone and allow their doctors or caregivers to access the
information through a website. In a statement issued last May when the FDA accepted submission of product for
review, the companies said: “With the patient’s consent, this information could be shared with their healthcare professional team and selected family and friends, with the goal of allowing physicians to be more informed in making treatment decisions that are specific to the patient’s needs.” The companies said the sensor “activates when it reaches stomach fluids and communicates with the patch”. The FDA said digital Abilify is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and as an addon treatment for depression in adults.
Farmers Must Stop Using Antibiotics On Healthy Animals, say WHO Farmers must stop giving antibiotics to healthy animals because they are fuelling the rise of superbugs, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said. Considerable amounts of antibiotics are administered to animals in the UK to prevent infections, especially in intensive farming. The drugs are also given to animals to promote growth
in the US and Asia, although the practice has been banned in the EU since 2006. Overuse and misuse of the drugs is driving the rising threat of antibiotic resistance, the WHO said. Some kinds of bacteria that cause serious infections in humans have already developed resistance to all available treatments. England’s chief medical offi-
cer Professor Dame Sally Davies has repeatedly warned the world faces a “post-antibiotic apocalypse”, after which routine medical operations would become too dangerous to perform because of the risk of infection. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, DirectorGeneral of the WHO said: “A lack of effective antibiotics is as serious a security threat
as a sudden and deadly disease outbreak. “Strong, sustained action across all sectors is vital if we are to turn back the tide of antimicrobial resistance and keep the world safe.” The health body strongly recommends completely banning use of medically important antibiotics in foodproducing animals for growth promotion and disease prevention without diagnosis, it said. Only when an animal in the same herd, flock or fish population is diagnosed with an infection should antibiotics be given, the WHO said.. In those cases, the animals should be given types of antibiotics “least important” to human health, it added. A review published on Tuesday by The Lancet Planetary Health found restricting antibiotic use in food-producing animals reduced antibiotic-resistant bacteria in them by up to 39 per cent. The WHO said this research had led them to issue new guidelines. The new guidelines are likely to prove unpopular with
farmers, since it could reduce profits. But the health organisation can only make recommendations — only governments can enforce laws on farming. A spokesperson from the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said in a statement the UK was making "excellent progress" in tackling antibiotic usage in farming, but did not comment on whether it was planning on enforcing the new guidelines. “Scientific evidence demonstrates that overuse of antibiotics in animals can

Why Fluoride Has No Place In Drinking Water Fluoride is described by chemists as one of the most reactive chemicals known to man. It is classified as a deadly poison by scientists. Although fluoride exists in nature and can be present in drinking water, it occurs in a natural form that is completely different from the fluoride added to drinking water. The idea to add fluoride to drinking water started in the 1940s and history shows that there was no scientific evidence to justify its addition to drinking water in the United States, where this phenomenon started. The main reason given was that small amounts of fluoride prevented dental decay. Shockingly, however, the reverse is true. What is very well documented is

Workplace Bullying And Violence 'Risk Factors' by Ann Cooper For Type 2 Diabetes "Workplace bullying increases risk of type 2 diabetes by 46%, study finds," reports the Mail Online. A new study looked at data from four different Nordic research projects to investigate whether employees exposed to workplace bullying and violence at work are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A distinction was made between workplace bullying and violence (or threats of violence) at work because bullying can take many forms. Also, some professionals, such as police or prison officers, usually have training designed to help them cope better with violence at work. The study found that people who said they'd experienced
workplace bullying or violence had an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those who didn't report any bullying or violence. These are interesting findings with a number of potential explanations. Stress, caused by bullying or violence, can have a wide range of potential effects. For example, it can lead to comfort eating and spending longer sitting still at your desk, which can cause weight gain. Being overweight is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Of course, regardless of the potential link to an increased risk of diabetes, workplace bullying and violence shouldn't be ignored.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI
You don’t really have to come up with anything dramatically new to create some enjoyable Saturday night television, and that’s certainly the case in Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, which stormed back for a third series with six million viewers for BBC 1 at the weekend. It’s a very entertaining show fronted by McIntyre who kicks-off with one of his routines; brings on a couple of excellent turns in Emeli Sande and Joe Lycett; does his mobile phone messaging bit (this time with expolitician Ed Balls); and does a couple of “Ordinary Joe” routines including the Unexpected Star (we got a really good opera-style singer) and a very funny new Midnight Gameshow sequence, where Dean the plumber (pictured above) got surprised in his bedroom with McIntyre appearing at 3.00 am with a cast of thousands! McIntyre scores high with likeability in a show that would not have been out of place three decades ago, but so what? It’s profession-

ally done and a good piece of silly fun that hits the absolute right note and puts to shame some of the dumb ideas that have been foisted upon the viewers over the last couple of years. Dovetailing between Strictly and Casaulty, it’s given the BBC another successful “linear” schedule, in other words a deck of shows that have people sticking throughout the evening without resorting to the remote control. I love panel shows but we don’t seem to get enough of them these days and that’s strange because they are cheap to put on. Lo and behold, two of the very best returned on the same night on BBC 1 and BBC 2 on Monday in the shape of Would I Lie To You (Ed Balls popping up again) and Insert Name Here. WILTY works great because of the dynamic betwene Rob Brydon, David Mitchell, and Lee Mack. The much newer boy on block, INH, also has that same sort of spirit between Sue Perkins, Richard Osman, and Josh Widdicombe, as we get to grips with some historical
trivia. I was really looking forward to the return of The Weakest Link as part of Children in Need last Friday, but I was left a wee bit disappointed. It may have just been my perception, but I thought this celebrity edition seemed to be a bit slow in pace, but the barbs from Anne Robinson were just as good as before. I’d certainly order some Saturday night celebrity specials for the spring and summer for BBC 1, and now we wait for the New Year revival of the Generation Game with Mel and Sue! Netflix is really firing up the bullets at the moment ahead of the impending release of season two of The Crown. If you want something different, try Stranger Things. I got totally hooked by the first series, and you’d wonder what would be appealing about a group of young kids in an American town of the early eighties getting involved in some spooky sci-fi goings on? Try it, and you’ll enjoy some realistic performances by some tal-
ented young actors in a mix of the funny, dramatic, and moving. The always-testing second season has delivered with the episodes that I have had time to watch so far. Also out on Netflix is the zillionth show out of the Marvel stable, The Punisher, which is the story of an ex-marine out to
wreak revenge on those who killed his family and who gets embroiled in an even bigger plot. I’m sure I’ve seen Steven Seagal and other movies go down this line, except that this is even more violent and darker. Frank Castle is played by Walking Dead original castmember Jon Bernthal (he was Rick’s copper col-
league who had an affair with Rick’s wife), and he’s grumpy and seriously deadpan. I’m told that the pace picks up a fair bit halfway through the series, but it was certainly pedestrian in episode one, though I did like the style and mood. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. it most definitely isn’t!

A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong
After last year’s hilarious Peter Pan Goes Wrong, the Olivier Award-winning Mischief Theatre Company, the brains behind the hugely successful The Play That Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery in the West End, return to the small screen with their take on Dickens’ famous festive fable this Christmas on BBC One. Blacklisted by the BBC after ruining Peter Pan, the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are not taking their ban lying down and force themselves back on the BBC by hijacking the jewel of the Christmas schedule, a ‘live’ production of A Christmas Carol staged by a professional cast. The following hour finds the Cornley gang trying to make
the show work on ‘live’ television as they soon realise they are completely out of their depth with no idea how to direct a live studio or handle special effects and are having their own internal rivalries revealed on television. Plus, there’s an angry professional cast trying to get back into the studio. Shane Allen, Controller Comedy Commissioning at the BBC says: “This promises to be a viewing treat for all the family as the Dickens classic gets the full Mischief treatment. Expect chaos and a shambles from start to finish, a bit like most people’s experience of Christmas itself.” Chris Sussman, Head of Comedy, BBC Studios, says: “It's going to be terrible. Brighton Dome to be home of Eurovision: You Decide
BBC Two, BBC Studios and BBC Music have announced that Eurovision: You Decide, the national song selection show for the UK entry, will take place on Wednesday 7 February 2018, live from the worldfamous Brighton Dome, the site of ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win with Waterloo. Joining the BBC Eurovision family is 2015 Eurovision Song Contest winner Måns Zelmerlöw, who will co-host the fantastic night of television and song alongside self-confessed Eurovision superfan Mel Giedroyc, who returns to host the proceedings. Måns Zelmerlöw says: “I’m
really, really looking forward to hosting Eurovision: You Decide together with Mel this year. I’m sure we’ll have a great show and I would love to see the UK achieve a great result in Eurovision 2018. RARE, RALLY-BRED OPEL MANTA 400 FOR AUCTION Rare, fully restored Opel Manta 400 homologation special for auction with Classic Car Auctions.
A rare, rally-bred 1984 Opel Manta 400 in show standard condition will be offered for sale at Classic Car Auctions’ (CCA) December Sale taking place at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre on 2nd December. Built as one of only 245 examples made to homologate the model for Group B rallying, this particular car was imported into the UK by Tony Fall, Opel Motorsport Team Manager at the time. After World Rally Championship success with Walter Rohrl in the earlier Ascona 400 model, Fall had hoped to continue the winning streak with the Manta, but was thwarted by the advent of the Audi Quattro at the start of the four-wheel drive rally era. The Manta 400, however, enjoyed major success at European level with the likes of Guy Frequelin͞ and who could forget the epic battles in the British Open Rally Championship between Jimmy McRae and Russell Brookes, both going head-to-head in a pair of iden-
tical Manta 400s in the eighties. This road-going Manta 400 has enjoyed a more sedate life, watching rather than partaking in rallies. It was purchased privately by Mr David Little of Lurgan, Country Armagh, and sent to the main Vauxhaul Opel Dealer, Pentlands, to be converted to right-hand drive. In the hands of the careful owner, the Manta spent most of its time stored in a garage, only seeing the roads on weekends to follow local rallies and on dry summer days. In 2005, following a period of almost four decades left untouched, the car exchanged hands and met its second owner who decided to embark upon a full, bare-shell restoration. Taking place over 12 months, almost every part of the car was stripped, sandblasted and powder coated.The engine and gearbox were subjected to full rebuilds, returning the car to factory fresh condition.

FORD RECONFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO SPAIN Ford is investing more than €750 million to build the next-generation Ford Kuga medium-sized Sports Utility Vehicle in Valencia, Spain.
The new investment brings the total sum invested in Ford’s Valencia operations to around €3 billion since 2011. “This major investment of more than €750 million reconfirms in the clearest way our continuing commitment to the Valencia region and to Spain as one of our most important manufacturing locations in Europe,” said Steven Armstrong, president and CEO, Ford of Europe, Middle East and Africa. “I also want to thank the national government in Madrid and the Generalitat Valenciana for their continued support, and for their ongoing work to maintain a favourable climate for business investment in the Valencia region.” Employing more than 8,000 people across all of its operations, the new investment will help to secure employment at Ford’s Valencia site. The investment builds on cost efficiency and productivity improvements by the management team, union partners and workforce. Today, around 25 percent of all new passenger vehicles sold in Europe are SUVs. Kuga accounts for close to 50 percent of Valencia’s vehicle production volume.European sales of Kuga so far this year at 126,900 are an improvement of 22 percent compared with the same period in 2016. Kuga is Ford’s third top-selling nameplate in Europe behind the Fiesta and Focus. Further details concerning the new investment announcement and the next-generation Kuga will be made closer to launch. Manufacturing vehicles since 1976, Ford’s Valencia Vehicle Operations and Engine Plant has produced more than 12 million vehicles and 16 million engines, and is one of Spain’s top automotive exporters. In addition to the Kuga medium-sized SUV, Valencia is the sole source of production for the Tourneo Connect people-mover and Transit Connect light commercial vehicle models, and for the full range of Ford’s Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy models.

The latest matches for the Racing Playas de Orihuela youngsters saw the Infantiles (under 13’s pictured) team stay in the top three of the league, after winning 6-2 at Pilar de la Horadada. They got a great start by scoring within just 10 seconds and continued to dominate the first half, going into the interval 4-1 up. They lost some concentration in the second period and got a bit sloppy, but managed to show some quality by getting two more goals, with the
man of the match being Theo Haland. In the other fixtures, the Prebenjamin side lost 5-3 to Torrevieja, whilst the Benjamines romped to an 11-2 victory over San Isidro. The Alevines went down 5-nil to Jacarrilla, whilst the Infantiles brave fought out a goalless draw with Guardamar. Elsewhere the Cadetes lost 2-1 to Pilar de la Horadada, and the Juvenils drew 1-all with Catral. The girls team also had a draw, 2-2, with Campello.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke another Champions League record as holders Real Madrid thrashed Apoel Nicosia on Tuesday to qualify for the last 16. Ronaldo scored twice in the second half to take his tally to 18 Champions League goals in 2017 - the most in a calendar year. Real have been on a poor run but were dominant as they picked up their biggest away win in the competition, and will now face a group winner in the last 16 as Tottenham won Group H. Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde admits his team were fortunate to win 3-0 at Leganes on Saturday, describing the scoreline as "misleading". The unbeaten La Liga leaders extended their lead to seven points after the victory which saw two Suarez goals, but Valverde accepted the final outcome was harsh on Leganes. Valverde said: "The result was misleading and excessive because Leganes made it difficult for us and had a great game, while there were times when we weren't brilliant.” Luis Suarez played a key role in their win after scoring twice to take his tally to five league goals this season. Valverde insists he was never worried about the form of the Barca striker despite his unspectacular start to the campaign. "Suarez? We need his goals, as well as those of Lionel Messi, Paco Alcacer and others, such as Paulinho," Valverde said. Elche CF has appointed 42-year-old José Joaquín Moreno Verdú, known as 'Josico', as the new coach to replace Vicente Mir, who was sacked at the start of last week. As a midfielder with Albacete, Las Palmas and Villarreal, Josico(pictured at his first Elche training session) has coached Las Palmas and Elche's divisional rivals CD Atlético Baleares, who he took to the Segunda B play-offs last season, before losing in the second round. Josico was clearly the second choice for the job, after exElche player Eloy Jiménez and former manager of Extremadura region club Merida AD was offered the position, only to turn it down after extensive talks. The deal broke down when Elche said they would not take on his ex-assistant José Luis Encinar, though his choice of physical trainer, Jonathan Moreno, was accepted. Josico took training for the first time on Tuesday and has signed a deal with the Segunda Division B club for the rest of the season, with an option for a further year. “My aim is to return Elche to greatness”, he told reporters. “We must get the club promoted to the second division”. His first match in charge, with the Ilicitanos third in the division, comes this Saturday evening at home to mid-table Valencia Mestalla, with a 6.30 pm kick-off. Josico was given a boost this week with the return to training of one of the Elche success stories of the season, striker Sory Kaba(pictured below), who missed the defeats against Formentera and Mallorca.

Neither Atletico Madrid nor Real Madrid were able to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona as they played out an absorbing draw in last Saturday’s Madrid derby at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium. In a game that usually delivers goals, chances were few and far between although Angel Correa, Toni Kroos and Kevin Gameiro will all feel that they should have scored. Both teams' big players failed to deliver with Antoine Griezmann extending his goalless run for Atletico to eight games while Cristiano Ronaldo's worst start to a La Liga season continued as he endured a frustrating evening. It was a game that both teams needed to win but they had to settle for a share of the spoils, much to the delight of Barcelona who are now ten points clear of the duo at the top of the table. Real appear to have a straight-forward looking match against struggling Malaga tomorrow afternoon with a 4.15 pm kick-off.
REAL MALLORCA 2 ELCHE 0 Segunda Division B leaders Mallorca got their expected win over second-placed Elche on Sunday, with the Ilicitanos being managed on the day by Elche Ilicitano coach, José Luis Acciari, after Vicente Mir’s sacking. The two goals came shortly into the second half, and the visitors held their own during the first period, without causing any great concern to the Mallorca players. Straight after the break, Teko brought down Abdón Prats in the penalty area, and got his marching orders, as Lago Junior converted the spot kick. Álex López doubled the Mallorca advantage eight minutes later, and that was pretty much it for 10-man Elche who at least got a new coach to look forward to on Tuesday(see above),as they dropped to third in the table behind Villarreal.

Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with cancer, and told his Sevilla players at half-time as they came from being three down to snatch a 3-3 draw against in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Reds looked to be heading for a comfortable win in their Champions League Group C clash as two goals from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane put them 3-0 ahead. However, Sevilla battled back in the second half and claimed a 3-3 draw, with Guido Pizarro scoring an injury-time equaliser. Sevilla players ran to celebrate with Berizzo after the goal, after Berizzo at half-time that he has prostate cancer. Berizzo, a former centre-back for River Plate, Marseille and Celta Vigo among others, is in his first season as Sevilla boss after three successful years in charge of Celta. The club said in a statement: "The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. "Future examinations will decide what steps to follow regarding the treatment. Sevilla FC wants to show their maximum support to their coach at this time and wishes him a speedy recovery."

French striker Antoine Griezmann insists he does not regret staying at Atletico Madrid, and says he has had no discussions about leaving the club in January. Griezmann has been constantly linked with a move away from Diego Simeone's side, who are 10 points off La Liga leaders Barcelona and are on the brink of exiting the Champions League at the group stages. Barcelona and Manchester United are said to be heavily linked to a potential summer move for the striker, but the 26year-old has said he hasn't regretted staying at Atletico for this season. He told French TV channel Telefoot: "I do not regret having stayed at Atletico. It was my choice, I am happy with my choice, even though I have gone seven games without scoring. I will score again soon." Asked if he had discussed a potential January exit with anyone at Atletico, Griezmann added: "No. In addition, Diego Costa and Vitolo will come, so we'll try to keep the team high enough. These two reinforcements will do us good. An exit agreement? I did not speak about that with the president." Griezmann has not scored in seven games for the La Liga side, but says he is happier with his performances, and is adamant he can regain his goalscoring touch. "I'm happy with all my performances with the national team but with only two or three Atletico matches. I have to improve and find my best form. "It depends on me, how I train and work. There are games where I don't even get one shot on target and that's my problem. "I have to work to take the team to the top."

Star names from the golfing world have joined key figures from the global golf travel industry in the annual World Golf Awards being staged this weekend at La Manga Club. Hundreds of thousands of ballots have been cast in a variety of different categories ahead of the event – regarded as the most prestigious awards programme in golf tourism – with the winners set to be unveiled at a gala prize-giving ceremony on tomorrow night (Saturday). Paul Casey will represent Europe for the first time in nine years after being selected as a wildcard for the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia in January. Frenchman Alexander Levy is also a wildcard, joining 10 qualifiers for the Ryder Cup style matchplay event. World number 14 Casey was on winning Ryder Cup teams in 2004 and 2006 but lost on US soil at Valhalla in 2008. Casey, 40, has not been selected since but 2018 captain Thomas Bjorn says considering him is a "no brainer".
The big Premier League clash comes tomorrow evening as Liverpool entertain Chelsea at Anfield (6.30 pm kick-off), and the visitors have Eden Hazard hitting a rich vein of form. Chelsea begin the weekend third in the table, nine points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who cross the Pennines on Sunday for a date with Huddersfield. Three points and two places behind Chelsea, a win tomorrow for Liverpool would see them move level with their opponents. Both sides were in midweek Champions League action but had contrasting fortunes. Liverpool squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 late on in Sevilla, whilst Chelsea booked their place in the Round of 16 with a 4-0 win at Qarabag on Wednesday, with Hazard in outstanding form. Speaking on BT Sport afterwards, pundits Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand both described the Belgian international’s performance as “world-class”. Hartley is joined among the replacements by 19-year-old lock Nick Isiekwe, and back Piers Francis. England's 31-year-old captain had led the team for all 22 Test matches under Jones, with Saracens' George a regular presence among the replacements. "This is an exciting squad to play against Samoa and we are expecting them to be immensely physical and committed this weekend," said head coach Eddie Jones. "We want to follow up last week's performance against Australia and play better again this week. Our intent in every game and every training session is to be better.
