THE TERRIBLE TEENS
British teenager is amongst a group of Torrevieja-based youngsters being questioned over a series of home robberies on the Orihuela Costa, which majored on stealing bicycles, with the gang using masks to hide their identities, when they staged some raids on Halloween night. Nine teenagers of different nationalities have been arrested by the Guardia Civil based in Pilar de la Horadada, with four others, including the British teen, being questioned and investigated. Those who were arrested have been bailed after a court appearance, and at the moment have been charged with seven crimes of robbery with force and three crimes of theft, with 17 bicycles having been recovered so far. The Guardia started an
investigation after hearing reports of a number of robberies on the Orihuela Costa urbanisations, with mainly bicycles and other easily taken objects stolen. The teenagers would either walk or travel by bus from Torrevieja to the Orihuela Costa in small groups and then go around the urbanisations trying to identify what would be a suitable home to break into. One or two of the teens would then jump over the fence of the property with the others acting as a look-out. They were well-prepared and even brought cutters with them if any bicycles that they fancied happened to be chained. Once they had enough bikes for the whole group, they would then pedal back to Torrevieja, with the Guardia investigation showing that it was almost a per-

sonal contest between the teenagers as to who would take the most number of bikes. The youngsters even took advantage of Halloween night in October by wearing masks during their unique version of trick and treat. Because the gang operated normally in small numbers, the Guardia had to run a five phase operation to round up the teenagers, when they were all caught in
the act riding stolen bicycles. The nine who were brought to the courts were aged between 15 and 19 years and consisted of four Spaniards; two Germans; plus a Romanian; a Moroccan; and a Venezuelan. Besides the British teenager, three other teenagers aged between 15 and 18 years of Spanish and Ukrainian nationalities are being investigated.

he Christmas Pet Food appeal organised by The Courier and TKO FM comes to an end today, after a fantastic response from readers and listeners, leaving office space at a premium, with all the generous donations squeezing the staff into a tiny corner! The appeal was launched at the end of last month, calling for dog and cat food donations to be dropped into The Courier/TKO FM office in Quesada, as well as two collection points in Torrevieja. To say that everybody has been taken aback by the
response is something of an understatement, with three local animal charities set to benefit. The food gifts are being passed onto to the Happy Animales shelter at San Miguel de Salinas and to the Cats N Dogs Aid Association in Quesada. The next edition of The Courier, which will be published on Friday January 5th, will feature photographs of the presentations to these deserving causes.
