FLU’S EARLY ARRIVAL

he annual flu epidemic has struck early in Alicante Province and the Murcia region, with five elderly people dying in Elda and Alicante City, whilst six people have died in Murcia from complications caused by the flu since last October. Influenza cases that normally reach a peak towards the end of January have reached similar levels four weeks early. Figures from the Murcia region health authorities report that around 500 additional people are visiting hospital emergency departments each day, compared to the same period last year, a rise of 40 percent. Two hundred and seventy extra workers have been taken on by Murcia’s hospitals to cope with the

increased demand. As previously reported by The Courier, health centres in Orihuela and Torrevieja started reporting increased numbers of patients seeking treatment during the final week of 2017, with experts

saying that the current strain of flu is the most virulent for three years, especially with older residents. Extra facilities have been opened up at Torrevieja Hospital; the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela; and

Elche’s Vinalopó Hospital, with unions critical of low staffing and resourcing to deal with the flu outbreak. Flu vaccinations are still available from local health centres across Alicante Province and Murcia.

HIPPIES SLAM MAYOR

raders operating out of Torrevieja’s popular socalled Hippy Market located on the city’s Paseo de la Libertad are up in arms over what they describe as “insensitive” remarks by Mayor José Manuel Dolón over a planned move to the Levante dock area, which they are worried may be permanent. Torrevieja’s services councillor Domingo Soler has stated that with the recent completion of drainage improvements in the area, the focus will shift on refurbishing the Paseo, with traders concerned that they will not be allowed to return after the work is finished.

The 'Asociación de Comerciantes Hippies de Torrevieja' says that the market, which has attracted thousands of tourists for 40 years, has become one of the major focal points for Torrevieja, and has slammed the Mayor’s lack of sensitivity and respect over remarks that the walk was going to be developed to create a “healthier area” and to “remove” a market that sold clothes and handicrafts. 160 permanent wooden stalls are on the current site, which is nicknamed the 'Paseo de los Hippies', with the Asociación adding that a consensus has to be reached between the council and the traders before

announcing any moves that affect them. Asociación president Lola Escudero said that the market provides a livelihood for more than 200 families and that they needed to be respected over any future plans and changes. Torrevieja’s markets

councillor, Javier Manzanares, has said that he has met with the traders and told them that they would be informed as to when any work would start in their area, and they would be kept fully abreast of any plans from the Torrevieja government team.

Falls in the birthrate and an exodus of foreign residents has led to Alicante Province recording the biggest fall in population numbers in the whole of Spain, according to padron registration figures compiled by the National Institute of Statistics. Over 11 thousand people disappeared off local padrons last year in Alicante Province according to the Institute, in parallel to the falls in the Orihuela area, as reported by The Courier last week.

The economic recovery though has seen rises in population in areas like Elche counterbalance the drops in other parts of Alicante Province due to non-Spaniards leaving the area, or not bothering to register. 120 thousand inhabitants have been lost in the region over the last four years, but with 1,825,332 residents logged in 2017, Alicante Province is still the fifth most populated area in Spain, behind Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla.

Reduced fees for checked bags are being introduced with an increase in checkedin bag sizes to cut down on the number of passengers with two bags at the boarding gates. “There is not enough overhead cabin space for this volume of carry-on bags, which is causing boarding/flight delays,” the airline said.

The check-in bag allowance is going up from 15kg to 20kg for all bags, while the standard check-in bag fee has been cut by £10 to £25 for a 20kg bag. But only priority boarding passengers, including those on Plus, Flexi Plus and Family Plus fares, will be allowed to bring two carryon bags onto the aircraft.

Ryanair’s new onboard luggage policy starts this Monday (January 15th) in a bid, according to the lowcost carrier, to reduce the volume of carry-on bags and to cut down on flight delays. As from next week, only passengers paying extra for priority boarding will be allowed to carry two bags with them onto aircraft.

The price of filling up your vehicle in Alicante Province has reached the highest level since July 2015, with the average cost of a litre of diesel going up by 0.8 percent in the first week of the year, according to the website, dieselogasolina.com. The average cost of a litre came in at 1.187 euro as of last Friday, though lower fuel

prices can generally be found at independent service stations. International oil prices have steadily risen over the last year, but the price hikes could have been even higher had it not been for the euro rate improving steadily against the dollar. The cost of oil is determined in American dollars.

Double Death The bodies of a San Javier brother and sister were discovered by the Guardia Civil at their home on Calle Isaac Peral on Tuesday. They apparently had been dead for at least a month, with the 43-year-old man

having passed away in his bed. He acted as a carer for his disabled 52-year-old sister, who, tragically, was unable to alert authorities, and was found lying on a sofa, apparently dying of starvation.

Recent rows over alleged broken promises between Pilar de la Horadada's local police officer unions and Pilar council have intensified with the revelation that two patrol cars have had GPS tracking devices installed in them without the officers knowing anything at all about them. The report in the Información newspaper comes on the back of police union accusations of what they claim to be almost three years of broken promises over agreements between them and Pilar's Security councillor, José Tomás Saura. Union representatives have sent Mayor Ignacio Ramos a formal complaint over the GPS devices and to ask what their purpose is, adding that this is act of

intimidation from Tomás Saura. Información reports that no monitoring devices for the units have been installed at the police headquarters, with one of the officers telling the newspaper that they want to find out who will be monitoring the GPS units.

Councillor Saura described the police concerns as “absurd”, and countered arguments that the devices had been put in to “control” the officers. ”GPS has been installed for the safety of the police, and there is absolutely nothing to hide”, added the councillor.

Benidorm Investment A Torrevieja builder is to invest 260 million euro in new properties over the next decade in Benidorm. The TM Real Estate Group is planning to build twelve hundred homes in the Poniente area of the resort, with the first apartments set to be completed in 2020. They announced their involvement in the site almost a year ago, but have now given more details over their long-term plans. It's the largest single investment by TM in its close to half-a-century in

business, with the Sunset Drive project being located on land that is located

between the InTempo building and the Hotel Poseidón Playa.

A plastic dump site in the Pilar de la Horadada municipality caught fire last Friday afternoon, with large plumes of smoke being seen as far

In The Money

A Benijófar family scooped a life-changing 750 thousand euro in a share of the second prize in the annual El Niño lottery drawn at the weekend. El Niño is one of Spain's two most famous annual lotteries – along with El Gordo, just before Christmas – and

is drawn on January 6th, a national holiday for the celebration of the 'Three Kings'. The Elias family (picture from Información newspaper) bought their ticket from the tobacconist on Ramón y Cajal, and only before Christmas they had won a more modest six thousand

euro from the same outlet thanks to the El Gordo draw. The money comes at a great time for the family, most of whom work as seasonal fruit pickers, and who are currently out of work. Fruit picking, though, might be a thing of the past for them.

Airport Restrictions

San Javier and AlicanteElche airport staff have been banned from feeding any stray animals that roam

around the area. The order has come from Aena, who manage both airports, and is part of a new

series of safety regulations that came into force this week across the whole of the Aena network.

Safer Aquamarina

Improvements to the slopes backing onto Aquamarina beach on the Orihuela Costa have begun in order to stop further problems caused by landslides.

Orihuela’s beaches councillor Luisa Boné has said that 52,000 euro is being spent on the project to reduce any potential damage caused by heavy rain

affecting the slope, as well as the promenade. A new wall to reduce rainwater erosion is also being erected as is mesh fencing to reduce falling debris.

Car Thief Nabbed

The Guardia Civil have arrested a 41-year-old man who broke into at least nine cars in the Guardamar area and stole items from them. The thief brazenly operated during the day and would smash though a window every time to remove any visible or hidden items from the vehicles.

In one case, the Guardia reported that the man took away all of the vehicle documentation in order to commit fraud, as he used the owner’s personal details to open up a mobile phone contract worth 800 euro. One of the car owners surprised him during a breakin, and though he ran away,

the owner provided a description of the thief to the authorities, which helped to identify him. Guardia officers arrested him at his home, where they found a variety of stolen items, as well as the implements that he used to break the car windows. He was denied bail after a court appearance.

Three Kings Parades

The Three Wise Men did their duty in all of the municipalities last Friday evening handing out gifts aplenty to youngsters at the end of their traditional parades. In Spanish tradition, Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, representing

Arabia, the Orient, and Africa, arrive on horse, camel and elephant, bringing respectively gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. The parade on the Orihuela Costa saw the kings travel down a few

streets in La Zenia, before delighting the children at the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre (above). Other parts of the region saw the kings arrive by boat at Santiago de la Ribera in San Javier, and at the port in Torrevieja (pictured below).

Stop Means Stop

Fisherman’s Friend

A taxi carrying a number of passengers, overturned on Saturday morning after colliding with a car at a Torrevieja junction. The incident (pictures from Objectivo

Torrevieja) happened at around 7.30 am where Calle Zoa crosses Calle Antonio Machado. The first reports indicated that one of the vehicles did not halt at the "Stop" sign

which gives priority to traffic using Calle Antonio Machado. The taxi passengers were taken to Torrevieja Hospital to be treated for non-serious injuries.

Torrevieja council is boosting the promotion of the area as a tourist attraction for fishermen from home and abroad, with the publication of a 2018 fishing calendar, featuring a variety of species that can be caught in local waters. The calendar was

launched by Tourism and Fisheries councillor Fanny Serrano, along with Pedro Carmona of the local Fishermen’s Association. Sardines, sea bass, anchovies, octopus and cuttlefish are some of the marine life featured, with descriptions for each month

printed in English and Spanish, with details of the minimum size for a legal catch, and also the way they can be cooked the best. Three thousand copies of the calendar have been printed and are available from the tourist info office on Paseo de Vista Alegre.

Barcelona Rules

Barcelona is Spain's top city-break destination for foreign tourists, and Madrid for visitors already living in Spain, according to a survey by airline search engine Jetcost. Barcelona’s strong placing comes despite concerns over tourist levels in the wake of autumn’s illegal referendum, but it appears that foreign visitors are not bothered by internal politics. Ten Spanish cities are in

the top 20 most-searched on the site, namely Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bilbao, Alicante and Ibiza. Whilst Spanish tourists on a 'staycation' are most likely to opt for a trip to Madrid, the capital is the second-most searched city on Jetcost by the French, Italians and Portuguese, the fourth for the Dutch and the fifth for

the Germans and Brits. Barcelona is number one for the French, Italians, Portuguese and Russians, the second choice for Germans and for Spaniards living in Spain, and the third for the Dutch and British. Alicante, on the other hand, was in fact the topsearched destination on Jetcost for Brits last year, second for Dutch and fourth for the French and Germans.

Back In The Spotlight

King Felipe VI paid homage to his father Juan Carlos last Saturday as the former monarch, fresh from celebrating his 80th birthday, made a public comeback after complaining bitterly of being left on the sidelines. Appearing in full military garb alongside his son, Queen Letizia and his wife Sofia at the royal palace in Madrid, Juan Carlos met Spain’s army, navy and air force chiefs at a traditional military ceremony held at the start of every year. Felipe congratulated his

father on turning 80 the previous day, drawing a smile from the elderly former monarch, who now walks with a stick. “Congratulations, Your Majesty, and thank you also for such a great number of years of loyal service to Spain,” he said, as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his defence and interior ministers watched. Widely lauded for his negotiating skills, political acumen and his role in defusing an attempted coup in 1981, Juan Carlos fell

from grace during Spain’s economic crisis as his lavish lifestyle drew anger. When he took the throne, Felipe VI, who turns 50 at the end of this month, kept his distance in a bid to restore the image of the monarchy, and last June, Juan Carlos was notably absent from an event marking 40 years since the first democratic elections after Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, despite having been widely credited for enabling the vote to take place.

Back To Life

An Asturias coroner got the shock of his life when a supposedly dead prisoner came back to life in a body bag. Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez was pronounced dead in his cell at Villabona jail in Asturias (pictured) on Sunday morning by medical staff who examined him and did not find a pulse.

After further checks, he was transferred to the coroner in order to perform an autopsy, whilst the “dead” man’s relatives were contacted. As the coroner was about to unzip the body bag, he noticed the corpse moving inside it, and the prisoner was immediately transferred to hospital.

Breast Pump Thief

A new mother pulled up for jumping a red traffic light, has been charged with theft after a stolen seventeenhundred-euro breast pump was found in her car. The accused was stopped by Granada local police, who found the electronic pump – a Medela Symphony – with a sticker from the city's Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital on it, a chain attached to one of its handles and a metal clasp which 'showed signs of hav-

ing been ripped out' from its fitting. She claimed a female neighbour had given her the pump, but was unable to provide any further information. Police did not consider her explanations to be enough to show a 'legal origin' of the apparatus, and confiscated it. The driver could be ordered to pay a fine and awarded a suspended sentence.

Fighting The Flab

The Spanish Legion is to put thousands of its soldiers on a weight loss plan amid concerns that paunchy physiques may be tarnishing the image of the elite force. The country’s legionnaires became the object of Twitter lust last year after users noted their low cut uniforms at military parades. But such chiselled frames may not be the norm, according to an internal document reported by the El Pais newspaper. The report, drawn up by the Brigade of the Legion’s Central Command, says 3000 soldiers must undergo

Body Mass Index (BMI) testing followed by a year-long monitored programme of diet and exercise for those found to be overweight. The document blames a high average age among Brigade members, “physical deterioration”, boredom with the training methods on offer and a general social acceptance of excess weight for propagating the problem. To return the soldiers to peak condition, the Legion is planning a multi-pronged approach, including physical and psychological measures as well as sanctions for those who fail to slim down.

Demolition Progresses

Torrevieja council says that an apartment block, nicknamed "The Whale", will be demolished before Easter, some 12 years after the last residents moved out. Demolition work started over a month ago, concentrating on the interior walls

to minimise any dangers of collapse, before the big task of knocking down the exterior walls starts. Over three years ago, a homeless man started a blaze in the building on Calle Pedro Lorca in the La Punta area of the city, and the block has been the sub-

ject of numerous complaints from local residents concerning pest, insect, and rodent infestation. A company from Navarra in the north of Spain is carrying out the demolition work on a 230-thousand-euro contract with Torrevieja council.

Fresh Lady Call

The Valencian Government has again said that the iconic Lady of Elche statue should return on a permanent basis to Elche. Regional culture secretary Albert Girona says that the Culture Ministry in Madrid "seems to have no interest in moving it back to Elche". The Lady is currently in the National Archaeological

Museum in Madrid, and was discovered in 1897 at L'AlcĂşdia, an archaeological site on a private estate two kilometres south of Elche. It is generally known as an Iberian artifact from the 4th century BC, although the artisanship suggests strong Hellenistic influences. In 2006, the Lady of Elche returned to the city for a few

months to celebrate the inauguration of the local Archaeological Museum, and has been the subject of a long-running campaign for it to return on a permanent basis. The Elche museum is to be converted into an Iberian Art Museum, with the aim of housing the Lady sometime in the future.

Suspended Postie

An Alicante Province postman, who stashed the mail for 11 years as he could not be bothered to deliver it, has been sentenced to two years in jail, suspended through to the end of 2021. Juan JosĂŠ P. T., who covered rounds in Ibi and Ontinyent between 2002 and 2015, had hidden an astounding 3,272 letters in

his garage in Alcoy since 2004 to avoid having to work his shift. Correos took him to court, and the process has just finished after nearly three years following an appeal and an out-of-court settlement between the State Law Service and Juan JosĂŠ's defence. He has been fined eight-

een hundred euros and banned from working in the public sector for the next four years. His two-year sentence will remain suspended until then, therefore, meaning that he will not have to go to prison as long as he does not commit any further criminal offences between now and December 2021.

Looking For Answers

The family of British tourist Kirsty Maxwell, who fell to her death from a hotel balcony in Benidorm last year, has urged the authorities to do more to support them in their investigations. Police are continuing to investigate the 27-year-old’s death, with officers trying to find out if foul play was a factor in what happened to Kirsty, who was staying in Benidorm on a hen do with some friends. Back in May, a judge placed five British men, who were in the hotel apartment when she fell, under formal investigation, and they were summonsed to answer questions at a hearing in July. Little news has emerged since then, and the family has

hired former police officer David Swindle to investigate her death. Swindle said:- “Kirsty’s family have been asking so many questions and one in particular, a very important thing, where is Kirsty’s clothing? That has not been answered. “This was treated as a homicide investigation and from my experience clothing from a victim is very important; it holds clues. But despite numerous requests from the family and social media appeals, they do not have the answer.” “There is no information and that is over eight months now since Kirsty died. It is really sad that they are having to cope with the death of a loved one but also grapple with a system that is not providing them any information.”

PENSION FREEDOM OR COLD CALLING NIGHTMARE

By Richard Samuels, Independent Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management

Ever since the UK chancellor announced he was going to allow pension freedom on UK private pensions from April 2015 the papers have had articles galore on what you can spend your money on, then some started to focus on the fact that there was a nasty sting in the tale for many people who cash in their pension and that was TAX. But since then the biggest problem is the number of scammers and fraudsters that are after your money.

and to get impartial help from a financial adviser unconnected to the firm that contacted you. It is also important to note that this advice is not just limited to pensions. The fraudsters can also target you when it comes to regular savings and investments. The bottom line is: When it comes to financial affairs, do your research, don’t be rushed into anything, and always make sure you are dealing with a reputable company.

Recently, the UK pensions minister Guy Opperman announced that in the UK alone 10.9 million people have been cold called about their pensions, that is 1 in 6 people. The figures for cold calling of expats living abroad with UK pensions is even higher. Pension freedom provides opportunities. But it also increases the danger of being hoodwinked by fraudsters eager to get their hands on your lifetime savings. Don’t let yourself become a victim, if you are cold called, hang up immediately, don’t get drawn into a conversation the people calling you are professional cold callers who know how to entice you into their schemes. The FCA highlights the following signs that should put people on the alert: * People offering high risk investments or scams will often cold call, but regulated firms are very unlikely to do this so the safest thing to do is hang up.

If you need advice or have any questions please contact me by email richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 692 352 156.

or discount if you invest before a set date, or by saying that the opportunity is only available for a short period. * A dodgy firm might downplay the risks to your money, for example by talking about how you will own actual assets that you may sell yourself if the investment doesn’t work as expected, or by using legal jargon to suggest the investment is very safe. * Beware of promises of tempting returns that sound too good to be true, for example by offering much better interest rates than those offered elsewhere or investments with no risk or low or sometimes no charges.

* Fraudsters might make contact unexpectedly about an investment opportunity but pretend they aren’t cold calling you, by referring to a brochure or an email that they have sent you. They might make a cold call, email, or follow up call after you receive a promotional brochure out of the blue.

* Fraudsters might call you repeatedly and stay on the phone a long time. They could say that they are only making the offer available to you, or even ask you to not tell anyone else about the opportunity.

* Another warning signal is if someone applies pressure to invest in a time-limited offer, for example by offering a bonus

The FCA's other tips are to check its warning list of companies running scams or operating without authorisation,

Sniffing It Out

BORIS Boris is a real character cat, who thinks he is a dog! Rescued off the streets with a horrendous facial wound, he has been restored to full health and is looking for a loving home. Not a young cat, Boris is used to surviving on his wits, and doesn't appreciate being surrounded by other cats. He is fantastic with people and would be a wonderful cat in a home where he was the only one. To meet Boris, please call APAH on 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

LADY Lady followed someone home who was out walking their dog, she just didn´t want to leave them. Sadly she had no microchip and has been staying at the SAT kennels. Lady is a two-year-old Podenco cross who loves to play and loves lots of affection. She is a gentle dog that is very easy to walk and will make a very loving, fun companion for any family. For more on Lady please call 966 710 047 or email info@satanimalrescue.com.

LUNES Lunes is a lovely happy dog who loves snuggling up to people and nibbling them affectionately. Aged eight years, he has a great deal of energy and so would benefit from long walks and a home with a large garden . Lunes is a large size dog with a big heart, who loves other dogs but will chase cats. For more about him, pleast contact the K9 animal charity on 600 845 420.

Dogs love to sniff. Using their nose is often the highlight of their walks, if not dominating their entire day. Their ‘nosiness’, however, can be difficult for owners to comprehend and even, on occasion, be embarrassing. The dog nose truly is a wonderful scent apparatus, even if we don’t quite understand all of its abilities yet! Dogs are born to sniff. The area of the canine brain that is devoted to analysing scent is 40 times greater than that of the human and dogs can identify smells at least 1,000 times better than we can! The dog’s superior sense of smell comes from 220 million olfactory receptors in its nose. Compared to the human’s paltry 5 million, it’s no wonder smell is considered to be the dog’s primary sense. When a dog sniffs, air is taken in and passes through the olfactory epithelium (nasal skin cells). These calls are also found in a special organ that dogs (and cats) possess, called the Jacobsen’s or vomeronasal organ. This organ is thought to be important in the detection of pheromones (body scents), perhaps giving the dog its tremendous ability to identify and recognise animals and people. Did you know? • The ability of the dog to detect scents varies between breeds, with long-nosed dogs able to distinguish scents better than the short-faced ones. The Bloodhound is thought to have the best scent-detection abilities of all dogs while Gundogs (like Retrievers and Spaniels) spend most time sniffing when out on walks. • Each dog nose is unique, with its own distinct nostril shape and pattern of ridges and dimples. A canine nose print is as unique as a human fingerprint. • Dogs can distinguish the scent of individuals, both dogs and people. They can tell the difference between individual family members, even identical twins, purely by smell. • Dogs can tell from sniffing a tree of lamppost when a dog

has passed, who it is and what status they have – male/female, top dog or not. • Dogs do not appear to distinguish between the regions of the human body which they sniff. Your armpits, to your dog, smell very similar to your feet! • A diet that is higher in fat and lower in protein than the typical dog food is thought to be beneficial to the dog’s scentdetecting ability, though it is only dogs who work as scentdetection dogs that may need to alter their nutrition. • Aromas can affect dogs. Lavender for instance, calms them down and reduces barking whereas rosemary increases it. When dogs are just too nosy! There are occasions when the dog nose is just plain annoying to humans: • When we are out on a walk and they insist on stopping every few paces to sniff • And when visitors call and they insist on sticking their noses into embarrassing places In these cases, it is up to owners to take charge. There is no doubt that dogs love to sniff, especially when out and about in their neighbourhood. Allow them plenty of sniffing time, to satisfy their needs, but if you want to move on, give them a command such as “Walk on” and reward them for obeying you. If you are embarrassed by your dog’s sniffing habits, try to distract them. When visitors call, put your dog on a lead to control their movements. Teach them to say hello by sniffing the person’s hand and reward them for staying calm. While you may be embarrassed by your dog sniffing the bottoms of other dogs, this is perfectly normal dog behaviour! It is also normal for dogs to seek out areas of your home or items of clothing that smell of you. It helps them feel close to you, in your absence.

La Marina Crash

A 60-year-old man was left trapped in his car and two other people were injured in a crash involving two vehicles on the N-332 in the La Marina village area last Thursday evening.

Elche firefighters took an hour to dismantle the car with the man having his legs trapped in the wreckage, whilst his female passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to Elche General

Hospital. The male driver of a white van only suffered very minor injuries, with the crash causing major traffic delays for an hour on the coastal highway.

Giraffes Killed

Its Fine Down Here!

Colder temperatures hit Alicante Province and the Mar Menor last weekend, but the daytime sunshine was in stark contrast to other parts of the country which were hit by snow, which fell on higher ground. The Guardia Civil and the army worked through the early hours of Sunday morning to help thousands of people trapped on roads in

the centre of Spain, after heavy falls forced them to spend Saturday night in their cars. Hundreds of vehicles were caught in the snow on the AP-6 motorway in Castile and León and northwestern parts of the Madrid region as people returned from the Three Kings celebrations. More than 150 members

of the army’s military emergencies unit (UME) were deployed early on Sunday to help Guardia Civil officers reach stranded motorists. By mid-morning, conditions had improved, making it easier for emergency workers to reach stranded drivers. Members of the Cruz Roja handed out hot drinks, blankets and highenergy food.

Keeping An Eye

All three giraffes from Cantabria's popular Cabárceno Safari Park died in a fire in the early hours of Saturday morning. The blaze caused

extensive damage in the building that housed the three male animals. An investigation has been launched by park authorities to find out what caused the

tragedy, after the Guardia Civil alerted emergency services at around 2.30 am, but the giraffes had already died when a fire crew got to the site.

The National Police and Guardia Civil will be monitoring rental and accommodation websites like Airbnb following last August’s terrorist attacks in Catalunya. As part of the government’s Anti-terrorism Pact, the Interior Ministry has revealed some of the measures the government plans to adopt in their fight against the increasing number of jihadist cells operating on Spanish territory. Authorities will keep more detailed records of people booking temporary accommodation across Spain on hotel and shortterm rental sites such as Airbnb or Booking.com.

Release Rejected

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by former Catalan Deputy First Minister, Oriol Junqueras, and ruled he must remain in prison on remand.

Three senior judges decided unanimously to keep Mr. Junqueras in jail due to there being a "relevant risk" of reoffending. He has been accused of

the crimes of rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds due to his role in the process leading to a declaration of independence in Catalunya on October 27th.

Violent Crossing

More than 300 people stormed the heavily fortified border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave Melilla in what authorities called a mass “violent crossing”. Some 209 migrants succeeded in reaching

Spain in Saturday’s incident. Spain’s two North African enclaves, Ceuta and Melilla, are a common target for entry into the European Union by migrants who try to climb the border fences or enter the territories by sea.

One Guardia Civil officer was injured in an attack by a migrant, according to the Spanish government. Four of the migrants who reached Spain received treatment for injuries sustained during the crossing.

Seahorse Worries

The seahorse is on the verge of becoming extinct in the Mar Menor, according to the preliminary findings of a survey from the Hippocampus Association, which is dedicated to the study and conservation of the Mar Menor in general and the seahorse in particu-

lar. Seahorse numbers have fallen by 90 percent according to surveys made last year, and appear to have been caused by changes in the water quality in 2016 which hit marine plant life that the seahorse needs to survive.

There has also been a rise in predatory species in the Mar Menor like the blue crab, sea bass, and bream. The Hippocampus Association is one of over 30 associations and organisations that make up the citizen lobby group, 'Pact for the Mar Menor'.

Flagging Thief

Catral mayor Pedro Zaplana has appealed to residents to help him stop a phantom flag stealer, who over a fortnight has taken five Spanish and European Union flags from public places, including from outside the Town Hall and the flagpole on the roundabout on the Callosa road. The thief must have some

good climbing ability to go to the top of the flagpoles to pounce on the flags, which measure three metres wide and two metres high. Each flag costs around 40 euros to replace, and the first incident was outside the Town Hall, where a Spanish flag was swiped over two weeks ago, followed by one depicting the European

Union symbol. The thief or thieves have also struck outside the Casa de Cultura. “I’m asking for anybody who spots people acting suspiciously to let us know”, said Zaplana. “These petty thefts are costing money, which is taken out of local coffers to pay for new flags.”

Red Light Ruling

Cameras at red traffic lights designed to catch drivers who cross them are 'illegal' and any penalties imposed as a result are null and void, according to the Supreme Court. Spain’s highest court rejected an appeal by Catarroja council in the Valencia region over a verdict from November 2014 which annulled a 200-euro fine and loss of four licence points suffered by a driver who jumped a red light and was caught on camera.

According to the council, the original court decision was 'erroneous' and 'seriously damaging for the general interest'. The Supreme Court said the cameras suppose a 'lack of legal security' for the public and did not 'carry any guarantees' when taking the photographs. They do not guarantee road safety and violate the concept of the driver being 'innocent until proven guilty', the verdict says. The results of the case were announced by the

European Automobile Association (AEA), which has denounced that over 100 fines have been levied by councils based upon traffic light camera footage. AEA spokesman Mario Arnaldo says the Supreme Court decision ratifies that of a case in November 2015 when local authorities in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, appealed a verdict that annulled a fine and loss of licence points levied on a driver who was caught on camera jumping a red light.

Mike Butler has been refurbishing and polishing marble, terrazzo and other stone floors in Spain since 2008 and there's not much he doesn't know about getting your floors, worktops/stairs and marble furniture back to their original splendour. Marble floors can loose their glossy shine through using the wrong cleaning products, simple lack of care or just plain old wear and tear; whatever the reason, Mikes crystallising system and high speed polish can give your floors that beautiful mirror like shine that you would expect to see from this natural product. Stone floors, stairs etc, can easily be etched into by acid cleaning products or even food and drink that may have an acid content like wine, lemon or vinegar. This can be fixed with grinding the etched mark out, then bringing the area back to a full shine with progressively higher grades of grinding pads and you would never know the floor had been damaged. Marble and other stone floors can be easily also be chipped or on occasions chunks of marble can be displaced, but unlike ceramic tiles, can be easily repaired with an epoxy resin. Mike uses a special marble repair resin with hardener added, that once applied, allowed to set (rock hard) and then ground flat, leaves the area with little or no sign of the original chip, vein or fault. Two Iranian nationals who tried to board UK-bound flights from Alicante-Elche airport have been arrested by the National Police (file picture) for travelling with incorrect documents. The Police said that both intended to seek political asylum once they had arrived in the UK, with a 28year-old man detained for using somebody else's passport.

Airport staff found that the photo did not match him, and he was promptly arrested, saying that he was gay and was seeking asylum in Britain, as Iran does not tolerate homosexuality. The other detainee was a woman that was travelling with her daughter, aged under 18 years, and who said that her objective was to meet her husband in the UK, and to ask for political

asylum. Her passport was discovered to have been forged. The Public Prosecutor's Office is asking for sixmonth jail terms for both detainees, as well as a fine of four euro a day for a total of six months. What subsequently happens to them after they have been through the Spanish legal process is unclear, however.

Gaming addiction classified as disorder by WHO Gaming addiction is to be listed as a mental health condition for the first time by the World Health Organisation. Its 11th International Classification of Diseases (ICD) will include the condition "gaming disorder". The draft document describes it as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour so severe that it takes "precedence over other life interests". Some countries had already identified it as a major public health issue. Many, including the UK, have private addiction clinics to "treat" the condition. The last version of the ICD was completed in 1992, with the new guide due to be published in 2018. The guide contains codes for diseases, signs and symptoms and is used by doctors and researchers to track and diagnose disease. It will suggest that abnormal gaming behaviour should be in evidence over a period of

at least 12 months "for a diagnosis to be assigned" but added that period might be shortened "if symptoms are severe". Symptoms include: impaired control over gaming (frequency, intensity, duration) increased priority given to gaming continuation or escalation of

gaming despite negative consequences Dr Richard Graham, lead technology addiction specialist at the Nightingale Hospital in London, welcomed the decision to recognise the condition. "It is significant because it creates the opportunity for more specialised services. It puts it on the map as something to take seriously."

But he added that he would have sympathy for those who do not think the condition should be medicalised. "It could lead to confused parents whose children are just enthusiastic gamers." He said he sees about 50 new cases of digital addiction each year and his criteria is based on whether the activity is affecting basic things such as sleep, eating,

socialising and education. He said one question he asked himself was: "Is the addiction taking up neurological real-estate, dominating thinking and preoccupation?" Many psychiatrists refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the fifth edition of which was published in 2013. In that, internet gaming disorder is listed as a "condition for further study", meaning it is not officially recognised. Lots of countries are grappling with the issue and in South Korea the government has introduced a law banning access for children under 16 from online games between midnight and 06:00. In Japan, players are alerted if they spend more than a certain amount of time each month playing games and in China, internet giant Tencent has limited the hours that children can play

its most popular games. A recent study from the University of Oxford suggested that, although children spend a lot of time on their screens, they generally managed to intertwine their digital pastimes with daily life. The research - looking at children aged eight to 18 found that boys spent longer playing video games than girls. Researcher Killian Mullan said: "People think that children are addicted to technology and in front of these screens 24/7, to the exclusion of other activities - and we now know that is not the case." "Our findings show that technology is being used with and in some cases perhaps to support other activities, like homework for instance, and not pushing them out," he added. "Just like we adults do, children spread their digital tech use throughout the day, while doing other things."

Why a booze-free month may be the perfect start to 2018 After the excesses of Christmas, many people decide to give up booze for the month of January in the hope that it will do them some good. According to Alcohol Concern, five million Britons took part in Dry January last year. So what are the benefits that experts say it can bring? Lose weight One of the main benefits is the chance to shed some of the pounds potentially put on over the Christmas period. Alcohol is packed with "empty" calories - those with almost no nutritional value that can make us fat and don't fill us up. A pint of beer contains around 200kcal, similar to a packet of crisps. According to Cancer

Better skin Alcohol can make you dehydrated and some say this takes its toll on the appearance of your skin. Certainly, some people find that alcohol gives them a flushed face. Switching from alcohol to drinking more water is advisable to help your complexion.

Research UK's alcohol calculator, if you would normally drink a large glass of wine each day, cutting this out for a month could save you nearly 10,000 calories that's four times the recommended daily allowance for an average man. Sleep better, snore less Alcohol can make you feel sleepy and drop off quicker, but drinking regularly can upset your overall sleep pattern and leave you tired, research suggests. A few years ago, Dr Richard de Visser from the University of Sussex carried out a study with 857 British adults taking part in January. After going for a month without alcohol, 62% of those in the study said they had better sleep. Drinking can also make you more likely to snore

because it relaxes the tissues in your throat. More energy If you abstain, you obviously won't get any hangovers. And you may find that you

feel more energetic if you are also sleeping better. Two-thirds of the participants in Dr de Visser's study said they had more energy by giving up alcohol for a month.

Save money An easily measurable benefit is a healthier bank balance. Cutting out alcohol could save you a significant amount of money if you normally spend quite a lot on drinks. Cutting out a large glass of wine every night could save you around ÂŁ124 by the end of January, according to Cancer Research UK which is asking people to raise

money for medical research by giving up booze and signing up to its Dryathlon. Sense of achievement Keeping your willpower can give you a feeling of satisfaction that you have reached your goal. Nearly three-quarters of the Dry January participants in Dr de Visser's study maintained lower levels of harmful drinking six months later. Brewer's droop Although alcohol can make people feel more amorous, it is linked to erectile dysfunction. For some men, abstaining from alcohol may help reverse their impotence. So, we’re nearly half way through January, but you could always start now, or even kick start it next month.

PARASITIC WORMS IN THE GUT IS COMMON It usually comes as a shock to some people when they are told after a full body diagnostic scan that they have worms in their stomach, gut, gallbladder or liver. Worm infestation is common and becoming even more widespread. Not long ago, worms were unheard of in the temperate and colder regions of the world, but today worm infestation is a growing problem. In southern European countries, such as in Spain, worm infestation is a common phenomenon. And from our estimates, every other person we see for a scan has worms. These worms are usually contracted by cross contamination, which is when microbes are unintentionally transmitted from one person

tablets every 12 hours for 36 hours. In severe cases of worm infestation, it may be wise to repeat the therapy after two weeks.

to another mainly due to poor hygiene. Worms are typically passed out of the body through stool. When people fail to wash their hands, properly especially while handling food, these worms can spread.

Some common worms include ascaris, round worms, and pin worms. These worms can exist in the body without causing symptoms, but they can cause serious problems including abdominal cramps, bloated-

ness, abdominal pain, indigestion, weight loss, diarrhoea and constipation. The good news is that worms are easily treated. Although we advocate natural therapies for maintaining

your health, in this instance we recommend a chemical drug. The drug is called Lomper (mebendazole) and has been used for over 60 years for treatment without a history of adverse reactions. The dose is usually two

As with any illness, prevention is better than cure. Be careful about where you eat and make sure that restaurants and their staff look clean. Wash your hands frequently, especially after using the toilet and before eating. Instil this advice in your children, as they will often be the persons responsible for bringing worms into a household, which can lead to everybody contracting the pests. Eating Three Rashers Of Bacon A Week 'Could by Increase Breast Cancer Risk' Julie Pye Eating just three rashers of bacon or two sausages a week could raise a woman’s risk of breast cancer, a new study has claimed. Researchers from the University of Glasgow found postmenopausal women who ate around 9 grams of

processed meat a day had the highest risk of developing the disease among those in the study. The study didn’t, however, find an association between eating red meat and increased breast cancer risk. Nor did it find a link

between breast cancer risk and processed meat intake in premenopausal women. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. The study used data from UK Biobank - a general population study involving people aged 40-69 years old.

In 2015, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that processed meats were as big a cancer threat as cigarettes and placed them in the same category as carcinogenic substances such as asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco. Since then, researchers have developed a new ‘healthier’ form of bacon which is free from nitrites, preservatives, E numbers and all allergens. The product, called Naked Bacon,

has been hailed by experts as a “very welcome development”. Marks and Spencer is the first store to launch the bacon, which went on sale last week. Commenting on the study’s findings, Dr Jasmine Just, from Cancer Research UK, told HuffPost UK: “The jury is still out on any link between eating lots of processed meat and breast cancer because this study didn’t take into account other important factors that

affect breast cancer risk like screening and family history. “The best ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer are to keep a healthy weight, cut down on alcohol and be physically active.” She noted that eating a lot of processed meat has been proven to increase the risk of other cancers, such as bowel cancer. “So, while the odd salami sandwich won’t do much harm, it’s still a good idea to cut down where you can,” she concluded.

Healthier Veggie Carbonara

Chocolate Orange Flapjacks

Ingredients 4 medium courgettes (use a mix of yellow and green if you can get them) 300g spaghetti 3 large egg yolks 160g vegetarian parmesanstyle cheese 1 tbsp olive oil small bunch fresh lemon thyme or thyme, leaves picked 200g chestnut mushrooms, roughly chopped 4 garlic cloves small bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped (optional) ½ lemon, zested and juiced Method Put a large pan of salted water on to boil. Halve the courgettes lengthways and scoop out and discard the core, then slice the courgettes at an angle into small diagonal pieces. Put the spaghetti in the pan of boiling water and cook following pack instructions. To make the creamy carbonara sauce, put the egg yolks in a bowl, add half of the grated cheese, and mix with a fork. Add up to 3 tbsp water to make the sauce less thick. Season and set aside. Heat a large frying pan on a

medium to high heat and pour in a little olive oil. Fry the courgette slices and thyme leaves with a good grinding of black pepper for a minute or two until the courgette starts to soften, then add the mushrooms. Fry for 2-3 mins until golden and slightly softened. For the last minute of the cooking, add the garlic. Working quickly, drain the pasta, reserving a little of the cooking water. Toss the pasta in the pan with the courgettes and mushrooms, then remove from the heat and add a ladleful of the reserved cooking water and the egg and cheese sauce. Add the fresh parsley, if

using, and the lemon zest and juice, then sprinkle over most of the remaining cheese. Stir everything together quickly to coat the pasta. The egg will cook if the pasta is still hot. If you’re worried about it, put back on the heat for 1 min. Pour in a little more of the cooking water, if needed. You should have a silky and shiny sauce. Season to taste, then sprinkle with a little more cheese to serve. Eat straight away, as the sauce can become thick and stodgy if left for too long. Prep: 20 Min Cook: 10 Min Serves: 4

The Feast of the Benicarló Artichoke Although it might sound strange to hold a two-week festival in honour of a vegetable, this tradition is in its 25th year. The Feast of the Benicarló artichoke is held from 12 to 28 January to honour this product and its unique characteristics. The activities associated with the festival are many and include the Jornadas del Pincho of the Artichoke, hiking routes along Los Aljibes, and a presentation of oil paired with artichoke, cooking workshops and other original and unique events such as the Art&Shock Festival. An interesting combination of black music and Benicarló artichoke, for the young and those not so young. This is a festival dedicated to Afro-American and Caribben rhythms. Ska, rocksteady, reggae, soul, rhythm and blues... and the musical performance of the Gramophone Allstars Big Band and Gravity Sound System. But, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular events is the traditional grill or popular torrà of artichokes, which are prepared on the grill and are offered among all participants. It is worth waiting for it! During the weeks following the festival, they celebrate the Gastronomic Days of the artichoke. Follow the route by the different restaurants and discover their menus prepared on the basis of this vegetable. If you are thinking of a gastronomic break, Benicarló is your destination. A traditional seafaring town, with quiet beaches and coves, a cultural port with interesting proposals and with gastronomy that embraces both sea and garden.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Don’t you just know that when Sarah Lancashire stars in a new drama, it’s always worth watching? The ex-Corrie star has a West Country accent this time, as opposed to doing “northern”, as she leads Channel Four’s Kiri, where she plays a genuinely caring Bristol social worker dealing with kids. Kiri has been penned by Jack Thorne, who brought us another cracking Channel Four drama, National Treasure, a couple of years ago starring Robbie Coltrane and Julie Walters, and so that means that he’s not scared to rattle a few cages. Kiri is a young black girl that’s about to be adopted by a white middle class family, but things go tragically go wrong after a visit to her grandfather, and we watch the consequences unfold with Lancashire’s character unfairly blamed for not doing her job properly and a debate on the old issues of class and race. It works well in a gripping hour packed with top performances throughout the whole cast. Jack Thorne and Sarah

Lancashire’s Kiri Triumph

Lancashire have done it once again. ITV have not learned from last year’s mistake of putting up a new and enjoyable nostalgic hotel drama, The Halcyon, up against the BBC ratings warhorse that is Silent Witness on a Monday night. The Halcyon was wrongly pulled, and this time a provoking drama called Next of Kin has been thrown to the ratings wolves. Next of Kin at last brings a leading UK TV role for Brit Archie Panjabi, who made a deserved name for herself in the fabulous US drama, The Good Wife. It brings us a Muslim family that are shown to be loving and caring and normal, rather than the old cliches of the past, but sadly for them, there is a dark link to some nasty terrorist goings on back in Pakistan, where a family member is executed, and we find out that his son is out there as well, having gone missing from his UK university. There’s some graphic (but relevant) violence, and though elements of the script were predictable, this was something

different that ITV should be applauded for commissioning and deserves to be watched. Also worth watching is an enjoyable bit of nonsense on a Saturday night on BBC 1, Hard Sun, which follows in last year’s footsteps of the Beeb putting on something different with the likes of Taboo and Gunpowder.

We’ve conspiracies all the way in a show brought to us by Luther creator Neil Cross, and our leading stars are two coppers played by Agyness Deyn and Jim Sturgess, who have plenty of skeletons in their own cupboards. As bodies start falling everywhere, they uncover something a lot nastier, namely a cover up

over the potential end of the world. It’s very well made fun and Neil Cross says that he would like to do a five-season arc of the story, and I hope he gets a chance to do it. As a fun bit of TV trivia, the closing credits brought us the name of the production company, namely Euston Films, who back decades ago under the Thames TV banner brought us gems like The Sweeney and Minder. The king of TV conspiracy shows, The X Files, is back after a two year break, and I can tell you that the opener for season 11 just fizzed and produced some great revelations in what I thought was a vintage quality episode, with plenty from the old enemy that is The Smoking Man. Forget some of the dodgy episodes (including the finale) from season 10, as this show is bang on form. Channel Five have the UK rights, but have not even bothered to declare when they will screen the latest adventures of Mulder and Scully. Fortunately in Spain, we have other outlets to keep bang up to date with

what’s going on. Also on form is season four of the US vehicle for the brilliant Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder, which started on Sky Living this week. Davis is just fantastic, but I also applaud (having seen the first half of the season already) the change in direction of the show and the way the old characters have been placed, plus Jimmy Smits joining the cast as a psychiatrist who has his own demons. I can only produce two printable words for my opinion of BBC 1’s Saturday night disaster that is Wedding Day Winners:utterly awful. The only novelty was seeing Rob Beckett in a suit, whilst co-presenter Lorraine Kelly just looked like she did not want to be there, or simply just did not know what was going on, which is what the viewers thought. At least Len Goodman and Partners in Rhyme can relax in the knowledge that an even bigger weekend turkey has appeared to eclipse their televisual nadir of the autumn.

watch her back as Phelan will turn on her one day.

Elsewhere, a scheme starts to take shape.

Friday DS Benton arrives at Moira’s door with devastating news. Meanwhile, Cain is worried about the Barton boys working on the farm. Elsewhere, Harriet is full of self-doubt after her recent problems with Cain.

Monday Things are critical after last week’s crash and Robert struggles to cope. Meanwhile, Moira confides in Ross the police have found a body which they think might be Adam’s. Ross encourages her to find out for sure and supports her as the police return. Ross holds Moira up as she breaks down in relief, but once the police have left, Moira is unable to live with the guilt, confesses to Ross she murdered Emma. Elsewhere, Bob and Laurel try to be civil. Later, Bob is delighted when Lydia persuades an uneasy Brenda into planning her wedding. Tuesday Cain comes to the farm and he and Moira kiss passionately, but what does this mean for their future and Harriet’s? Meanwhile, Charity and Chas reassure a guilty Debbie she’s more than welcome in their home. Elsewhere, Zak and Lisa are concerned.

Wednesday Marlon inadvertently invites Jessie on a date to a wrestling night, but will she be interested? Meanwhile, the Dingles meet their new neighbour.

Friday 12th January 2018

Thursday Zak and Lisa are promised they will be given an option to discuss revising the golf course development plans with the architect and a lawyer at a party being held up at Home Farm that evening. Although dubious, they hope it’s the truth. Later, the Dingle women arrive at the party and Debbie’s entrance takes Joseph off guard as he gives a speech. Meanwhile, back at the Dingles’, Samson and Noah play with their headsets and are completely oblivious to what is about to happen. A foreman knocks on the door before signalling to a bulldozer to begin knocking the house down. Unaware, Samson and Noah are deep into their game as the digger makes an impact on the wall of the house. As bricks begin to fall inside, Samson and Noah are soon alerted to the danger. Will the boys get out unhurt? Elsewhere, Rhona drops Jessie off at Marlon’s for the wrestling night. Rhona decides to stay when she sees Paddy, but does this mean she’s still got feelings for Paddy? Also, Harriet feels hurt.

Friday Chesney is a bag of nerves as he prepares to marry Sinead, while Carla implores Daniel to follow his heart and call a halt to the wedding. As Sinead climbs into the car, she clocks Daniel across the street. They share an intense look, which is witnessed by Chesney. As the wedding guests gather at the register office, will Daniel make his move? Can Sinead ignore the doubts in her heart and say ‘I do’? Meanwhile, Eileen visits Anna in prison and asks her for her account of Seb’s accident. Will Eileen hear more than she bargained for?

Anna assures Eileen that she never laid a finger on Seb and Phelan is trying to frame her. Eileen doesn’t know what to believe. Soon afterwards, Anna corners a prisoner who she knows as Abi’s friend Karen and asks her to try and find out where Seb is. Later, alone at Number 11, Eileen nervously opens Phelan’s tool box. Will her worst fears be confirmed?

Monday Eileen is unnerved when she receives a call from Anna, begging her to visit again. When Tim and Gary reveal that Anna’s court case may be postponed as Seb has done a runner, Faye is worried sick about him, as is Eileen when she overhears. As Eileen sets off in her car, Phelan watches and his suspicions are aroused. At the prison, Eileen struggles to hide her unease as Anna quizzes her about Seb. Will Noah and Samson be Anna warns Eileen to okay as the bulldozers move in to knock down the Dingles’ cottage? Meanwhile, Pollard tries to do right. Elsewhere, Cain’s motives are exposed. Also, Marlon takes the plunge.

The manager suggests Craig should talk to their new dancer, Maddison, as she was working close to where the incident took place. Craig is stunned to discover that ‘Maddison’ is none other than Bethany.

Wednesday Anna calls Gary from prison and tells him that Eileen has taken Phelan’s side again, so her only hope is Seb. Having been tipped off by Nicola, Gary finds Abi and Seb in a café. Gary implores Seb to help Anna, but Seb is scared witless. Seb reveals that Phelan killed Luke and he’s worried he could be next. Stunned, Gary reports Phelan to the police for the murder of Luke. Eileen’s suspicions are reignited as the police take Phelan in for questioning.

The police question Phelan, who lies that he was alone at Number 11 when Luke was shot. Back at home, Phelan tells Eileen it was just a routine enquiry. Relieved, Eileen confesses she had her fears, as Seb told her he murdered Luke. She admits searching for a gun and going to see Anna in prison. Phelan is furious. Smarting over Eileen’s lack of trust, Phelan suggests he’ll move into Billy’s flat so a convalescing Billy can stay with Eileen. Eileen asks Adam and Eva to help with Billy’s care until he’s mobile. Adam agrees through gritted teeth.

again. When she pays a visit, she’s not happy with Karen’s poor customer service.

Friday When Whitney finds a pregnancy test in the bin, she confronts Tiffany. Will her worst fears be realised? Meanwhile, Ian takes the opportunity to continue to wind up Masood. Elsewhere, Karen finds out that somebody else has been given the job at the launderette. When this causes tension on the Square, Karen and her rival are both offered a trial to prove they’re the best person for the job. Monday Max is still determined to find some way to save Abi, but one of the doctors at the hospital gives him a harsh reality check. When Max responds angrily by threatening the doctor, Lauren steps in with some home truths of her own. How will Max react? Meanwhile, Whitney decides to visit Milton Keynes to find out what’s been going on with Tiffany at home. When Tiffany rumbles her plan, she races to stop Whitney and almost gets run over in the process.

Tuesday Max is still refusing to listen to reason and resorts to desperate measures to save Abi, but his family beg him to see that his erratic behaviour is not in Abi’s best interests. Later on, Max finally calms down when a nurse shares her own personal experience of a similar situation. Will he finally back down? Meanwhile, Dot returns home and discovers that the launderette is open

Thursday When a flat pack cot for the baby arrives that Abi had ordered before the accident, Max throws all of his efforts into building it – even after Lauren tells him that they’re needed at the hospital. Later on, Max gets overcome by grief and destroys the cot, just as Jack and Dot arrive to visit him. Can they find a way to comfort him? Meanwhile, Linda puts a stop to Masood’s trial at the Queen Vic following his disastrous performance. Before he goes, Masood finds some suspicious activity in the pub toilets. Elsewhere, Whitney’s detective work leads to Tiffany rushing off, leaving Whitney panicking over her whereabouts.

Encouraged by Sacha, Essie is having second thoughts about investing in Gaskell. With Raf’s legacy at stake, can Essie be assertive with Gaskell and find confidence in her decision?

Meanwhile, with worries for Ric ringing in her ears, Donna is concerned that Sacha is off his game. With potential disaster looming, Donna enlists Nicky to help her take matters into her own hands.

BBC to tell the story of the symbols of the Coronation

As part of the Royal Collection Season across BBC television and radio, BBC One have announced The Coronation, an hourlong film revealing to new generations the compelling story of the Crown Jewels and the ancient ceremony for which they are used. As part of the film, to mark the 65th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's Coronation, The Queen shares memories of the ceremony as well as that of her father, King George VI, in 1937. The Crown Jewels, which form part of the Royal Collection, consist of 140 items and contain 23,000 precious stones. These sacred objects form the most complete collection of royal regalia in the world. The Royal Collection Season, a major partnership

between the BBC and Royal Collection Trust, reveals the fascinating history of the Royal Collection - one of the largest and most important art collections in the world bringing both the masterpieces and some of the lesser-known works of art, and the stories behind them, to audiences across Britain. Exploring the role and symbolic meaning of the Crown Jewels in the centuries-old coronation ceremony, The Coronation shows these objects of astonishing beauty in new high-resolution footage. The film tells the extraordinary story of St Edward’s Crown, which was destroyed after the English Civil War and remade for the Coronation of Charles II in 1661. It has only been worn by Her Majesty once, at the moment she was crowned.

The Island with Bear Grylls will return for a fifth series

The Island with Bear Grylls, the ultimate survival challenge that abandons ordinary Britons on uninhabited islands in the Pacific, will return in 2018. In the fifth series, two separate groups will be abandoned at opposite ends of a remote uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. The first eight castaways are all wealthy professionals living off an average income of £100,000 a year – a wage only earned by a fraction of Brits. The opposite group of eight castaways all earn below the UK national average wage. Neither group knows the other is there, but will they find each other, and will they work together? The series looks at the issue of wealth disparity, and whether living with vastly different economic circumstances at home has an influence on our ability to

cope in the wild. Who is better equipped to thrive in a survival situation? Of the thousands of applicants, just 16 head to The Island, where they face extreme tropical weather, limited resources and environmental hazards, with none of the home comforts everyone relies upon. Bear begins the experiment by dropping the two groups off by boat at opposite ends of the island. The Islanders will have to fend for themselves armed only with some survival training, the clothes they stand up in, filming equipment, medical supplies, some basic tools and fishing equipment and enough water for 24 hours. Across six episodes airing on Channel 4, they will become part of a select few who get to experience what it is really like to survive on their wits and determination.

The Biggest Little Railway in the World Sunday - Channel 4

Saturday - BBC One Gabby Logan presents live coverage from the scenic surroundings of Holyrood Park. In the shadow of Arthur’s seat, the annual curtain raiser to the athletics calendar sees teams from Great Britain, Europe and the USA go head to head in senior and junior races. Many of the British team that topped the medal table at the recent European Cross Country Championships in Slovakia will be involved in this meeting and they will compete alongside former European track silver medal-

list Andy Vernon. Double European indoor champion Laura Muir will compete in the ever-popular mixed team relay event in which the Home Nations,

Dick Strawbridge and a team of model railway enthusiasts attempt to build the longest model railway in the world, 71 miles across Scotland, from Fort William to Inverness. The miniature train begins its 71-mile journey, and the train ferry build in the previous episode does not work as well as expected. Further down the line, the Europe and USA will race track teams have to work against each other over four quickly in heavy rain while fending off midges, while 1 km laps. Steve Cram is joined by Paula Radcliffe in the commentary box.

McMafia

Sunday - BBC One Benny Chopra receives a call informing him that Vadim’s heroin shipment is moving across the border from Pakistan into India and he is surprised by the quantities reported. Dilly, who is spying on Benny, realises that something unusual is going on. He breaks into Benny’s empty office with his men, but they are interrupted mid search by a late-working accountant. Holding the man at gunpoint, Dilly has him access Benny’s computer, where they find the information they require to pull off a heist. However Semiyon says Alex must decide whether or not to give the go ahead.

Back in London at Godman Capital a suspicious Karin tries to access the details of the fund which Alex is using to move Semiyon’s money around, but finds it password protected. After she confronts Alex, he hires a professional hacker to cover

his electronic trail. Suspicions are raised closer to home when Rebecca discovers that Alex has a secret second phone. Soon afterwards Karin approaches Rebecca about her concerns: have Alex's lies finally caught up with him?

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. We can do that for you, but you will need to promote your website and of course to generate new opportunities.

Joanna Lumley replaces Stephen Fry as the first female BAFTA Film Awards host Joanna Lumley is to replace Stephen Fry as host of this year's BAFTA Film Awards. The Absolutely Fabulous actress will be the first female host since Mariella Frostrup co-presented with Fry in 2001. Fry has presided over the ceremony 12 times since then, but announced he feels it's time to "let others take the BAFTAs on to new heights". Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Lumley said: "I've had to keep it secret for about two months. "I am excited because it's all about the industry. It's all about movies, which are my first love. The heart beats on the night over who is going to win and who is not going to win. "But that's not my fear. Mine is just, with any luck, making the evening lovely, smooth, exciting, charming and funny. "I promise you, if you've ever been nominated and you're waiting to hear, there is no feeling like it. The chances are 5/1 that you're not going to get it and then you do!" On what she makes of this year's nominations, she added: "The difficult thing

[judging the BAFTAs] is it's like judging cats against dogs. All films are completely different. But outstanding films stand out. "The one which is nominated which we are going to see again and again is Three Billboards [Outside Ebbing, Missouri]." In a statement last week, Fry thanked everybody involved with the event for helping to "make every year so enjoyable". "Every one of the 12 BAFTA Film Award ceremonies that I had the privilege of hosting has a place in my memory," he said. "The mixture of glamour, glory, drama and – occasionally – embarrassment and hiccup holds a unique place in the British film calendar.

"Over the last two decades I have especially loved watching the emergence of new young film talent behind and in front of the camera. "But after so long a time, I felt it only right to stand down and let others take the BAFTAs on to new heights and greater glories. "What fun it will be to watch BAFTA 2018 without my heart hammering, mouth drying and knees trembling." Fry hosted every ceremony from 2001 to 2006, then returned in 2012 up until last year. Jonathan Ross hosted the BAFTA Film Awards before Fry and from 2007 to 2011. This year's ceremony is being held at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, February 18.

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions comes to you at home or at work. Their personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Max wanted to know whether PC Clean Up tools are all their cracked up to be.

Q

Hi Richard, recently, I have come across on the Internet more and more companies offering to improve the performance of one's personal computer, firstly issuing a routine free of charge, then secondly, offering "advanced routines" at various prices depending on contract terms.

Examples are Auslogics Boostspeed 8; Avast Scan for Performance routine which promises to delete junk files, get rid of unnecessary applications, and tweak system settings for speed; finally, a hook in Ookla Speedtest.net website promising efficiency programmes from a company called PCReviver. How cautious should one be before permitting these computer experts to meddle with registry components? How does one know if they are successful? Are you getting value for money with the chargeable items? What is your opinion? Kind regards Max

A

Hi Max, my opinion of these pieces of software is not high I´m afraid. Whilst it’s true that most applications leave “bits” behind after they are uninstalled – these bits are usually settings left in files on the hard drive and registry (the Windows database) items it’s probably not necessary to go cleaning up all of these left behind bits of programs.

The impact to the performance of your computer really isn’t dramatically affected by these left behind bits and pieces mainly because your computer doesn’t reference them because the program that accessed them has been removed. Whilst there are exceptions to almost any “rule” in computing, my opinion is that the impact to your computer system of running a “clean up” tool is much higher than the performance degradation caused by having bits of left over programs on the average person’s computer system. I should also point out that there are a number of pieces of malware around that pretend to be helpful clean up tools and it’s pretty difficult for the normal computer user to tell these rogue applications apart from the legitimate ones, so I would rather err on the side of caution and advise not to use any of them – of course this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use legitimate antivirus and malware protection tools which of course do very different things. It’s true to say, it’s a bit of a minefield out there. Hope this helps.

MERCEDES-BENZ IN 2017: No 1 IN THE PREMIUM SEGMENT Mercedes-Benz sold approximately 2.3 million cars worldwide

Mercedes-Benz achieved its most successful year of all time in 2017, increasing its unit sales by 9.9% to 2,289,344 vehicles. The car division’s growth last year was driven in particular by the new E-Class Saloon and Estate and the SUVs. As a result of its success in all three core regions – Europe, Asia-Pacific and NAFTA – Mercedes-Benz was the best-selling premium brand in the automobile industry for the second consecutive year. No other German automobile brand in the premium segment posted as strong growth as the Stuttgart-based company with the three-pointed star in 2017. Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “Last year, Mercedes-Benz Cars delivered more than 2.4 million Mercedes-Benz and smart to customers all over the world. We thus surpassed our prioryear unit sales for the seventh time in succession. With Mercedes-Benz, our core brand, we were the best-selling premium brand once again in 2017. We can be proud of that

achievement – and we will build on it. Success in our core business provides the basis for us to actively shape the mobility of the future. In 2018, we will systematically continue along this path with CASE.” Mercedes-Benz defines the four future topics for the automotive industry with its corporate strategy CASE: Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Services and Electric. The optimal combination of these four areas will be a crucial success factor for offering customers the most convincing overall package. The smart vision EQ fortwo show car is the first car to demonstrate how all pillars of the CASE-strategy can be linked up, and presents an intelligent solution for urban mobility and future car sharing: It is electric, fully connected and autonomous, and does not have a steering wheel or pedals. Investments in these four future fields are enabled by the success in the strong core business. Safety, quality, modern design and future-oriented innovations are the key factors that make Mercedes-Benz more successful today than ever before.

NEW RANGE OF RACE WHEELS TO BE LAUNCHED AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL

Revolution Wheels, long known and associated more for their unique range of bespoke wheels for rally vehicles, will be showing their range of race wheels for the first time on stand no. 8618 at Autosport International at the NEC at the moemnt and running until Sunday. The range of race wheels has been months in testing and sets new standards in construction and performance, achieved by the use of FEA technology to design the wheels, ensuring that weight saving doesn’t compromise strength. Modern flow-form casting techniques, using virgin alloy, results in wheels able to pass with ease the

stringent 690kg impact and cornering fatigue test, resulting in wheels that perform better, are more durable and will last longer. Understanding what their customers want from a wheel has enabled the company to create a standard where each wheel can be customised to suit specific vehicle requirements by machining the wheel to any offset within its range. Revolution’s managing director, Warren McKiernan says, “We found a niche some years ago dealing with the more discerning type of rally competitor, who would rather purchase a wheel that was custom-made.”

BUILDBASE HONDA ON TOP! Buildbase Honda’s Charles Lefrancois raced to a commanding victory at the opening round of the 2018 Arenacross Tour at Manchester Arena last Saturday night. Throughout practice and qualification the 27-year-old Frenchman didn’t drop out of the top two on his 2018 CRF450R before running 2-1 in his heat races and picking up an extra three championship points by topping the hot lap competition. When the gate dropped on the Main Event he grabbed the holeshot and then controlled the race from the front, leading every lap and taking the chequered flag with a two-second advantage over the second-placed rider. “It’s a very good start for me and I’m really happy,” he said. “All night has been good for me with great starts and I have a good feeling with the Buildbase Honda so I am very happy for the team. “I took the holeshot in the Main Event and then concentrated on my lines because the track was difficult with many ruts – the dirt was very soft but I like that because it gave me many lines to choose from.” Charles’ team-mate Fabien Izoird had a tougher time. The 2014 AX champion ran 3-4 in his heats and started the Main Event well but a puncture in the final few laps forced him to drop a place to fifth in the closing stages. “It’s not been the best start for me and

I’m a little bit disappointed,” said the Frenchman. “It was difficult in qualifying and hard to make a fast lap but I got a good start in the Main Event and was fourth until I got a flat tyre. Fifth is not the best but it’s okay for the first round. “The track was very soft but I’m sure it will be better for the next round in Newcastle so I’m looking to improve my position.” Team boss Dave Thorpe was delighted with the result. “It’s been a fantastic night for the team,” he said. “Charles didn’t put a foot wrong – I’m absolutely chuffed to bits for him. We didn’t really know him too well before he came over to test but straight away we realised he was a quality rider. “He’s ridden amazingly all night. I’m so pleased for him and the whole team because they’ve all worked very hard. Arenacross takes a lot of effort to get right – I’m sure we won’t have the highs all the way along but tonight has been great. “Unfortunately, Fabien got a puncture with three laps to go which probably cost him a podium but it’s been a solid opening night and I’m confident he has what it takes to run at the front. He knows how to win this championship.” With one round down Buildbase Honda leads both the Pro Championship and the Pro Team Championship and now heads into round two of the series tomorrow at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

2017: A RECORD YEAR FOR ELECTRIC AND PLUG-IN CAR REGISTRATIONS

- Best-ever year for 100% electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle registrations, up 27% year on year with sixth consecutive annual rise - Landmark year as total number of plug-in cars on UK roads passes 130,000, with numbers set to grow further in 2018 fuelled by expanding model choice - 2018 EV registrations could reach 60,000

for 100% electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

Figures released today by Go Ultra Low show that 100% electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles achieved record-breaking levels of popularity in 2017.

Robert Llewellyn, actor, electric car expert and TV presenter, said: "I've been driving electric cars for eight years – they have proved incredibly reliable, cheap to run and easy to use. I’d urge everyone considering a new car to test drive a 100% electric or plug-in hybrid model. In my opinion, put simply, electric cars are the future."

Unprecedented demand saw registrations increase by more than 27% on the previous year with an ever-expanding range of plug-in vehicles available to motorists. In 2018, annual electric car registrations could reach 60,000* for the first time, retaining the UK’s position as one of Europe’s largest markets for ultra low emission vehicles. In a landmark year, the total number of plug-in cars on UK roads passed 130,000, as public and business appetite for plug-in hybrid and 100% electric cars reached a new high. From January to December, motorists flocked to buy ultra low emission vehicles, with 46,522 registered in 2017. The Go Ultra Low numbers show that records tumbled throughout the year with every quarter comfortably out-performing 2016. The second half of 2017 recorded in excess of 24,000 registrations of 100% electric and plug-in hybrid cars – up more than 40% on July-December 2016. Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said: “2017 was a stellar year for electric vehicle registrations with strong growth of 27%, demonstrating the massive consumer appetite

“There are already more than 130,000 electric vehicles on UK roads, a figure that could pass 190,000 this year as new models come to market and consumers reap the cost saving benefits of electric driving.”

Across the country, several regions stood out with London (9,274) and Eastern England (8,685) registering the most electric vehicles (EVs), a rise of 42% and 21% respectively on 2016. Meanwhile, the South West and Scotland grew the fastest, boosting plug-in uptake by 140% and 70% respectively against the previous year. The demand for 100% electric cars, such as the UK’s best seller – the Nissan LEAF, continued to grow with the sector’s registrations increasing by around a third, to top 13,000. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid cars like the popular BMW 330e, VW Golf GTE, and Hyundai IONIQ, delivered the highest volume of registrations with more than 33,000 arriving on UK roads, an increase of a quarter versus 2016. Greater choice of models and growing consumer appetite for ultra low emission cars means that 2018 looks set to be another record breaking year. If similar growth continues, 60,000 vehicles* could be registered during 2018 taking the total number of plugin cars on our roads to more than 190,000.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER! Return of Tin Top Sunday at the 2018 Silverstone Classic Celebrating 60 years of the British Touring Car Championship Cost-saving Early Bird tickets available until the end of March

This year’s record-breaking Silverstone Classic (20-22 July) will celebrate the 60th anniversary of one of the country’s most popular, prominent and enduring race series – the MSA British Touring Car Championship – with its biggest-ever homage to racing saloon cars. Working closely with TOCA – the organisation which has been the driving force behind the illustrious BTCC for nearly half the series’ acclaimed history – the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival is planning to honour the diamond jubilee in supreme style. A number of exciting announcements – including some promoting the current series, which continues to flourish with live TV coverage and record grid numbers – are planned for the coming months. The first of these is the return of ‘Tin Top Sunday’. Staged only once previously in 2016, Tin Top Sunday – on Sunday, 22 July – will be a must for touring car fans of all ages, with the action-packed race programme featuring no fewer than four magical races for iconic BTCC cars from bygone eras. Close to 200 of the BTCC’s most illustrious machines will be reliving their glory years on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, many raced by past and present BTCC legends. Ensuring the maximum spectrum of the epic championship’s 60-year history is showcased, the selected grids will put the spotlight on four very different generations of bumper-to-bumper entertainment. Turning the clock right back to the early sixties, the ever-popular Under 2-litre Touring Cars (U2TC) grid is an ultra-competitive contest featuring Alfa Romeo GTAs, BMW TiSAs, Lotus Cortinas and hordes of giant-killing Mini Coopers. Highlighting its status, multiple BTCC champions Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden teamed up to win this rousing race in 2015. While the BTCC’s formative seasons were dominated by sporty versions of locally produced European saloons, by the mid-sixties, mighty American V8 muscle cars had come, seen and conquered. It is a thunderous epoch perfectly represented on the ‘Tin Top Sunday’ bill at the 2018 Silverstone Classic by the return of the fearsome TransAtlantic Touring Car Trophy – fans can look forward to a massive 50+ car grid laden with Mustangs, Galaxies and Falcons. By the mid-seventies, the Yank Tanks had been outlawed and in their place, BTCC grids were filled with Capris, Rover Vitesses and smaller-hearted speedsters such as the Triumph Dolomite Sprint, Alfa Romeo GTV and BMW M3. All these icons – and many more – are included in the exciting Historic Touring Car Challenge (HTCC), which makes a very welcome return to the Classic roster after its spectacular debut in 2016.

Rahm Makes His Mark

Golf is blessed with a wealth of intriguing narratives. Will Spieth-Thomas become the next great rivalry? Can Rory bounce back from a subpar season? Does Tiger have anything left in the tank? Among these tantalising storylines is the fledgling firepower of Spain’s Jon Rahm. The world was his for the taking after a lights-out start to 2017, highlighted by his breakthrough at Torrey Pines. Admittedly the hype went a little off the rails; for as magnificent as Rahm looked on tour, he appeared very much the rookie at the majors. Nevertheless, with a win at the DP World Tour Championship in November--his third of the campaign--the Spaniard showed he's at the forefront of golf's youth revolution. But, in case Doubting Thomases need a reminder of Rahm's emergence, last weekend’s performance at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii should do the trick. Dustin Johnson dominated last weekend’s headlines for his excellent display at

Kapalua, and rightfully so. But Rahm's play warrants attention as well. The Plantation Course is notoriously unkind to first timers, but Rahm toured its 72 holes in 16 under, good enough for a second place in the field of 34. And a finish that delivered a bit of history. The runner-up position pushed Rahm to number three in the world rankings, becoming the fourth-youngest player to reach that standing. The other three? Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. Joining such company is impressive in itself, and a feat that gains distinction when realising Rahm was outside the top 125 at this juncture last season. Rahm is taking the week off, but returns to a jam-packed schedule with scheduled appearances at a slew of USPGA tour events, where golf fans will be waiting to see him with great anticipation.

Jacarilla Boost

Jacarilla’s football field has been improved and refurbished, with 95% of the cost funded by the Alicante Provincial Council. Council vice-president Eduardo Dolón (pictured third from the right) attended an official ceremony, along with Jacarilla

Coco’s Departure

mayor, Pilar Diaz (middle) to herald the end of the 354,000euro project to lay down the artificial surface. Dolón said: - “The Provincial Council is delighted to help in this initiative which will especially allow the younger residents of Jacarilla to enjoy a full upgraded facility”.

Rojales Reseeding

Nearly seven thousand euro has been spent by Rojales council in reseeding the Moi Gómez municipal football ground, which saw CD Thader using it for the first time last weekend (see opposite page). Rojales sports councillor Pedro Llopis has said an area of nearly 10 thousand square metres had been replanted, with costs kept down because most of the project was kept “in

house” by using council workers. The work began in November and finished at the end of last month, with Llopis saying that the football pitch is one of comparative few in the area that uses traditional grass as opposed to going down the route of artificial turf . “This kind of surface is preferred by players”, added Llopis.

CD Almoradi’s propensity to lose coaches continued on Wednesday night, as Francisco García Dols "Coco" left the club, following a board meeting. Fitness coach, José Antonio Gil, will take charge of the team for their Sunday derby clash against CD Torrevieja. Coco’s departure was framed as being taken because he could not balance his work and team training schedules, and that his exit was a mutual consent between him and the

Almoradi. Coco only came in as coach back in November to replace the sacked Juanan Cases due to a player revolt. Since then, the team have only won one match (Coco’s first in charge with a one-nil penalty victory at Orihuela) out of seven outings. The board stated that Coco’s exit had nothing to do with the team’s poor form which sees them lurching towards the Preferente Group Four zone, especially after their Sunday defeat at Elda (see opposite page).

THADER RULE THE ROOST

CLUELESS ALMORADI

ELDA IND 3 CD ALMORADI 0 CD THADER 3 CD TORREVIEJA 0 It was a welcome return to the Rojales Municipal Stadium for Thader on Sunday lunchtime, after they’ve had to play away from home for a number of weeks due to the annual reseeding of the playing surface. What is clear after this first match of 2018 for both sides, is that Thader are on the way up in Preferente Group Four, whilst the Torrevieja slide continues. Put even more simply, Thader were good and Torrevieja were poor, with Thader easily grabbing the local derby bragging rights. Suprisingly, Thader did not have their necks in front at half-time, with an early Lloyd Dummett free-kick (pictured above) producing a few saves from Torry keeper Vidal, and exTorry man Dani Lucas coming close, as Thader ruled the roost, with the visitors showing absolutely nothing. Torrevieja were down to ten men early in the second half after a second yellow card was shown to Walid (pictured below), and then in the 56th minute, another thunderous free kick from Lloyd Dummett put the home side deservedly in front.

Incredibly Torry were still in it, in terms of the score if not with anything of any scoring merit, until the 82nd minute when substitute Nino, who had been on the field for 10 minutes, doubled Thader’s advantage, with Piti making it three, some five minutes later. The table shows Torrevieja in sixth place with 27 points and still just three points off the play-off zone and third-placed Villena. Meanwhile, Thader, after their poor start to the season, are now on 24 points, and have a chance to close that gap on Villena by travelling away to them this weekend. Torrevieja meanwhile have another derby to look forward to as they go away to Almoradi this Sunday morning, and are in desperate need of a good result and performance.

Hopes of an Almoradi revival on the back of a preChristmas draw with leaders Hercules were dashed on Sunday in a performance that saw Elda keeper Adriel almost die of boredom in the second half. That result saw the Almoradi board and coach Coco mutually agreeing his departure on Wednesday evening, with a statement issued saying his departure was nothing to do with poor

results (see bottom of opposite page). Abraham opened the scoring for Elda in the 14th minute, but soon after Saul created the only Almoradi chance that grazed the post, which was about it for the visitors. Elda had good chances to increase their advantage, but didn’t do that until two minutes after the interval, when Abraham got his second. Almoradi had absolute-

ly nothing to offer and Cristian made it three-nil for the home side, with ten minutes remaining. Almoradi are now too close for comfort to the relegation zone, in 14th place with 18 points, three points above 16th-placed Benferri. They will hope to get back to business (minus Coco) in their clash with out-of-form Torrevieja at the Sadrián stadium this Sunday, with an 11.30 am kick-off.

DISAPPPOINTING MONTE

SPORTING GUARDAMAR 3 CD MONTESINOS 2 Over 200 people watched this match on a bitterly cold Sunday evening with Guardamar Castle as a stunning backdrop for the venue. The first quarter of an hour was uneventful, with both sides sending the ball up and down the ground with little effect, until Carlos Ventura was stopped from scoring by a late tackle. The last five minutes of the half were awful for Montesinos, as Guardamar sent an attack forward and the ball came high from the right-hand side of the goal to float over the head of Dani who seemingly had no

chance in stopping it. Then a lack of Monte defending saw the home side score again, and Guardamar went in two-nil up at the interval. The visitors needed a massive second-half improvement and they clearly missed their forward fire power of the suspended duo of Vaz and Maccan, who watched the match with the Monte fans from the stands. The worrying fact was that Monte’s midfield had a lack of creativity, and their defence was invisible. Within 10 minutes of the break, German managed a long shot into the

Guardamar goal, but then yet another defensive error allowed the Guardamar forwards loads of room to attack and take their third goal. Following a dodgy tackle from a Guardamar player on the edge of the box, Luis took a tremendous free-kick which sailed into the centre of the home goal, but the equaliser didn’t come. Montesinos now stand in sixth place in the Valencia Primera regional group eight table, and and they are scheduled to entertain second-placed Intercity Sant Joan Alicante this Sunday, with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

Nice And Easy

Real’s Late Woe

BARCELONA 3 LEVANTE 0 Goals from Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Paulinho saw Barcelona ease to victory over Levante on Sunday. Philippe Coutinho (see opposite page) was in attendance at the Nou Camp ahead of the completion of his move from Liverpool, and he saw Barca's big-money signing from the summer in Ousmane Dembele make his first start since September after a long injury lay-off. It was, however, the familiar faces of Messi and Suarez who did the damage in first half, while Paulinho added a late third to as they maintained their nine point lead at the top of the La Liga table over over Atletico Madrid. Barca travel to Real Sociedad on Sunday evening.

Clueless Ilicitanos

ELCHE 0 SABADELL 1 CELTA VIGO 2 REAL MADRID 2 Gareth Bale scored twice but Real Madrid fell further behind runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona after Maxi Gomez scored late on to claim a draw on Sunday for Celta Vigo. Bale's first-half double looked to have sealed the points for Real at the Balaidos when he struck twice in two minutes to cancel out Daniel Wass's sublime lob, and Celta's luck looked to be out when Keylor Navas saved Iago Aspas's second-half penalty. Real looked to have done enough to claim the points, but lost their lead when Gomez leapt highest to nod Wass's cross past Navas with eight minutes to go. The result leaves the champions 16 points behind Barcelona and facing the prospect of being out of the La Liga title race by the end of the month, with the gap to Valencia in third now five points. Real entertain Villarreal tomorrow afternoon with a 4.15 pm kick-off.

Elche’s first match of 2018 produced another dismal performance and a late winner for Sabadell, with Jeremy Guillemenot grabbing all the points for the visitors in the 89th minute, after a goalkeeping howler from José Juan. Elche's lowest attendance of the season of just under five thousand made their feelings known with whistles and chants directed against the players, directors, and coach Josico, who has presided over a hapless series of performances after the surprise sacking of Vicente Mir, when the club were second in the Segunda Division B table. The team lacked any creativity and inspiration and coach Josico spent part of his post match news conference berating the long-suffering Ilicitanos supporters for having the nerve to criticise him and the players, who they branded as “mercenaries”. There was a morale-boosting midweek friendly victory and a hat-trick from Javier Flores in a four-three win over Belgian first division outfit KSC Lokeren played on Wednesday morning at the Campoamor Golf Club. The serious business resumes on Sunday, with Elche surprisingly still in four place in the table, as they travel to CD Badalona.

Barca’s New Target Grau In Charge

Barcelona have spent big in recent months with the La Liga leaders spending huge amounts on Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, who signed from Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund respectively. However, Barca want to land Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann (pictured). The France international is expected to be on the move come the end of the season, with Barca and Manchester United both keen to snap him up. Yet Spanish outlet Diario Gol say Lionel Messi expects Griezmann to join Barcelona and has consequently warned Real Madrid to expect his arrival, with the club able to sign him by activating his 100 million euro release clause. Negotiations with the striker are supposedly advanced and a summer move now looks in the offing. However, Barcelona may face a fight to convince Atletico into selling. In December, Diego Simeone’s side confirmed they had reported Barca to FIFA for tapping Griezmann up. “Atlético Madrid have reported Barcelona for repeated contact with Griezmann and his people, contact which we are aware of,” a spokesman for Atlético told Mundo Deportivo. “He is a player with a contract with Atlético Madrid and a long contract at that.”

Orihuela CF have a new sporting director in the shape of exElche junior coach and Base Football director, Domingo Grau. The 50-year-old from Santa Pola will be formally presented to the local media after this Sunday’s match at home to Paiporta. “Orihuela is a very demanding club”, said Grau, who had to leave Elche last summer because of budget cuts, and ended up working for Santa Pola council. “I know that the goal of the first team is to get into the promotion play-offs and to move up to Segunda Division B”, he stated. Grau said he wanted to bring his experience from Elche to Orihuela, after turning down job offers elsewhere, including working as a coach for La Liga club Getafe, where he would have hooked up with former Elche colleague, Ramón Planes. “I'm going to do a job similar to what I was did at Elche. I'm going to take charge of the first team and to work with coach Machuca. My aim, as in all the previous places I have been at, is to add and try to help”. Orihuela President Antonio Felices said:- "The sports director was a difficult position to fill, since we needed a person who knew first hand the scene in our division and who would be a big plus for the team. Domingo Grau brings a wealth of experience, which we think will guarantee long-term success."

Third Division News

Orihuela’s players were more than happy to open up their account for 2018 with a two-nil victory at Torre Levante, which keeps their second-placing in the Valencian Third Division nice and secure, three points behind leaders Levante, and four clear of Castellon, who beat Elche Ilicitano, two-nil. The goals came midway through the second half with Benja(62 mins) and Iván(68 minutes) on target, with Iván scoring just four minutes after coming on as a substitute. Orihuela now entertain struggling Paiporta at Los Arcos this Sunday afternoon, with a 4.30 pm kick-off. Crevillente suffered a three-one defeat at Villarreal, and are 12th in the table, with 26 points. They are next at home to midtable Roda on Sunday. Elche Ilicitano will look to dust themselves down after their Castellon defeat with the challenge of entertaining leaders Levante this weekend, with defeat likely to see them drop into the relegation zone.

Pen To Paper

The long-running saga of Philippe Coutinho wanting to move from Liverpool to Barcelona finally came to an end on Monday, as he joined the La Liga leaders for a fee around to be 150 million euro. The Brazil international underwent a two-part medical early on Monday, which revealed he had a thigh injury which will delay his debut by three weeks. Coutinho then headed to the Nou Camp where he joined Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu to sign a contract until summer 2023. The 25-year-old's Barcelona contract includes a 400-million-euro buyout clause. Inter Milan did not have a significant sell-on clause in the deal that saw Coutinho move to Liverpool for 10 million euro in 2013. Coutinho said: "I want to thank the president and all those who have made possible the signing.” "I am very happy, it is a dream come true and I hope to meet all expectations in the field." Coutinho was the subject of three failed bids from Barcelona in the summer, and he handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force a move but was unsuccessful. Bartomeu said: "We've been working for months on this. But one of the important aspects was that he [Coutinho] wanted to come here. He made an effort, he was patient and that was a determining factor in bringing him here.” "Everybody knows him as a player, we know about his professional career, but what I can say is that it wasn't easy to bring him here. He wanted to be here and he's part of this new project with [Ernesto] Valverde. "I want to thank Liverpool, one of Europe's biggest clubs, for allowing him to leave." Coutinho has already played for Liverpool in this season's Champions League, and will therefore be ineligible to play for Barcelona in the competition during the current campaign.

Rafa Is Ready

Spain’s Rafael Nadal showed that talk of his demise had been exaggerated by winning the French and US Open titles last year although he faces a battle to repeat those feats without his lifelong coach and uncle Toni while also fighting familiar injury troubles. He returns to the Australian Open, which starts this Sunday, where he lost a thrilling five-set final to longtime rival Roger Federer in 2017, after overcoming his chronic knee problems just in time and hoping to continue last year's progress under new coach Carlos Moya. Former world number one Moya will lead the Mallorcan's team, after spending last season with Rafael and Toni preparing for the latter's retirement, having helped Nadal roar back to life after a barren three-year spell without a grand slam trophy. He can take some credit for the vast improvement in Nadal's second serve, which helped the Spaniard win a 10th Roland Garros title without dropping a set and saw him blow away Kevin Anderson to lift the final major of the year in New York. "I increased my serve by several kilometres per hour and I think I did better overall with my second than first, and I can say I won some points almost for free as a result," Nadal said "We'll have to keep working on that because in my career there are two vital things, the serve and the return, where I start the point and where I have to attack so I don't have to run more than I need to. It's a new era and will be like adapting to a different routine. Moya has come with new ideas and new methods of working”. Nadal, 31, became the oldest player to end the year as world number one although the stresses and strain on his body finally took their toll when he had to pull out of the ATP World Tour Finals in November after losing his opening round match. That was his last competitive action as he missed warm-up events in Abu Dhabi and Brisbane and only returned for the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament on Tuesday, in which he lost in straight sets to Richard Gasquet. Nadal was naturally rusty after his extended break but he looked free from his notorious knee problems and is by no means alone in heading to the Australian Open after injury troubles. Andy Murray has had to extend his six-month absence by having hip surgery, while Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka have not played competitively since Wimbledon in July although the pair, unlike the Briton, will be at Melbourne Park. Nadal's biggest challenge, and that of compatriot Moya, will be to beat tournament favourite and world number two Federer after losing all his four matches against the Swiss last season.

MINA DEAL

KONTA’S CHALLENGE Barcelona are set to complete the signing of Palmeiras defender Yerry Mina for 11.8m euro. The La Liga leaders announced that the 23-year-old Colombian has agreed to a five-and-a-half-year deal. According to reports, he will fill the void left by Javier Mascherano who is expected to join Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune. Mina becomes Barcelona's second major signing of the transfer window after their deal for Philippe Coutinho (see page 47).

LIAM’S CHANCE

24-year-old batsman Liam Livingstone, who will captain Lancashire this year, has been called up for England’s Test squad for their tour of New Zealand. James Vince and Mark Stoneman have retained their places, despite their struggles with the bat in the 4-0 Ashes defeat by Australia. Batsman Gary Ballance, bowler Jake Ball and all-rounder Tom Curran have been dropped for the two-Test tour in March, whilst paceman Mark Wood has been called up, as well as “suspended” Ben Stokes.

British number one Johanna Konta will play American Madison Brengle in the first round of the Australian Open, the first of the tennis Grand Slams, which gets under way on Monday. The 26-year-old, seeded ninth, leads the British singles challenge in the absence of Andy Murray, who is recuperating after hip surgery. Kyle Edmund and Heather Watson are the only other Britons, who at the time of going to press, had secured direct entry into the main draw. Konta has reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals on her last two visits to Melbourne, but has a potentially tough route through the draw this time. The Sydney-born Briton could face sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in the fourth round and top seed Simona Halep in the quarter-finals. First she must overcome world number 92 Brengle, who has won three of her four matches against Konta, although the Briton was the victor when they last met in 2016.

Edmund, the only British man in the draw following Murray's withdrawal, faces a tough opening match against 11th seed Kevin Anderson. The South African, 31, won their only previous meeting in five sets at last year's French Open. Edmund, 23, is ranked 49th and arrived in Melbourne after pulling out of a warm-up tournament in Auckland as a precautionary measure because of an ankle issue. Watson, 25, plays 23-year-old Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan - ranked 24 places higher at 50th - in the first round. Second seed Roger Federer begins the defence of his title against Aljaz Bedene, who returned to playing under the Slovenian flag on January 1st after nearly three years as a British player. Top seed Rafael Nadal plays Victor Estrella Burgos, the world number 81 from Dominican Republic, in his opening match. There’s more on Nadal in a special feature on page 47.

REDS OUT FOR REVENGE

Liverpool will be hoping to make some sort of amends this Sunday for the 5-0 humiliation suffered at the hands of Manchester City earlier this season, as they meet in the Premier League at Anfield (kick-off 5.00 pm). As Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his Reds debut, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane brushed Jurgen Klopp's men aside in September. Since then, however, Liverpool have lost just twice and not at all since October and could climb to third or find themselves in fifth come full-time depending on the result and results elsewhere. Mohamed Salah is a slight doubt for the Reds with a groin

strain. The Egyptian missed the FA Cup third round win over Everton but is hopeful of facing the Premier League leaders. Virgil van Dijk will make his Premier League debut. Manchester City have lost Gabriel Jesus for the next six to eight weeks with a MCL knee ligament injury, but Vincent Kompany (calf) is closer to a return. Second-placed Manchester United entertain Hughes-less Stoke City on Monday evening, whilst champions Chelsea are first up of the big boys on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Leicester to the Bridge, with four-placed Spurs taking on Everton in the evening match.
