FOOTIE FISTICUFFS

mass brawl involving around 40 people broke out on Saturday afternoon involving two junior football teams and spectators at the Esteban Rosado stadium at Sports City, Torrevieja, with Guardia Civil and Local Police officers called in to break it up. Only two minutes were left on the clock of the Group Four Regional Preferente Juvenil (16 to 18 years category) clash between CF Torrevieja and CF Lacross Babel from Alicante, when things turned nasty, after Torrevieja had just levelled up the score at two-two. The referee stated in his match report, as reported by the Informacion newspaper, that a Torrevieja youngster, who was sat on the bench, decided to have a verbal altercation with a Babel player, who he accused of

hitting the face of a Torrevieja teammate after the home side had made it two-all with a penalty. The words turned to action as the Torrevieja player then rushed onto the field and punched the Babel player with his right fist, inflicting a bruise on his left cheekbone as well as a nose bleed. Players from both sides, plus the substitutes, then joined in the altercation, with the fans (mainly family members of the players) deciding to enter the fray, as a mass fight replaced the scheduled sport of football, causing the referee to abandon the match and take refuge in the dressing room. External help was summonsed with four Guardia Civil patrol cars plus agents from Torrevieja's local police GRO team arriving at the scene and managing to

break things up, with no need for an ambulance to be brought in. Nobody was actually arrested, but officers identified the main parties involved if individuals chose to take the matter further. The Informacion news-

paper reports that CF Torrevieja are going to take serious measures against their player, in addition to whatever action is taken by the Valencia FA, which at best will be a lengthy suspension for the unruly teen.

he main opposition parties on San Fulgencio council are taking steps to annul the controversial awarding of a 16-million-euro garbage collection contract for the municipality. The PIPN Independent party and the PSOE Socialists have joined forces to refer the franchise award to the central contractual court run by the Ministry of Finance in Madrid. The 22-year contract was given to UTE Entorno Urbano y Medio AmbienteAcciona after a council plenary meeting vote before Christmas (pictured).

The measure was passed by the San Fulgencio council on the recommendation of the government team led by Mayor Carlos Ramirez, who last year was sentenced to eight years of disqualification from public office for prevarication. He quit the Partido Popular and five of his PP colleagues were thrown out of the party, but they continue to rule San Fulgencio with a majority along with a UPyD councillor. One PP councillor refused to join them. The PIPN and PSOE say that proper procedures were not followed in the contract

award, including Mayor Ramirez allegedly ignoring a report that he himself commissioned warning that certain aspects of the tender process were not correct. Other concerns include opposition claims that prop-

er financial projections have not been carried out, and worries that the tender award could also cost San Fulgencio extra money, with the contract winner not assuming certain economic risks.

There were pets galore that gathered together in La Mata in Torrevieja on Saturday, and at loads of venues across the area and Spain to celebrate the feast of St.Anton, the patron saint of animals. Special blessings took place from the middle of last week through to the week-

end. Dogs, cats, and rabbits plus horses, iguanas, and birds gathered in La Mata square (picture from Objectivo Torrevieja) for the blessing with holy water given by the Parish priest of Our Lady of the Rosary of Torrelamata, Don José-Luis Arnal Pérez.

Bikers Injured Two people on a motorcycle were injured, one seriously, after colliding with a van on one of Alicante Province’s most dangerous roads, The crash happened on Sunday lunchtime on the CV-685 between Santa Pola and Elche, a road that, according to official figures for 2016, saw 20 accidents on its 12 kilometre stretch. The incident took place around noon on the Elchebound carriageway in the Santa Pola municipality and was the first major accident of the year on the road. The bike rider was seri-

ously injured and taken to Elche General Hospital, along with his pillion passenger, who had minor injuries. The two people in the van escaped injury and they in fact called the emergency services to report the accident.

Elche and Orihuela have the lowest crime rates amongst Alicante Province's larger municipalities, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry in Madrid. The statistics look at population areas of 60 thousand and over, with both Elche and Orihuela clocking in 21 reported crimes per thousand people.

In contrast, Torrevieja records a figure of over 42 crimes per thousand, with Benidorm topping that at almost 44. It's believed that house robberies of largely empty holiday homes is a factor as to why areas like Torrevieja have a higher crime rate, with the Orihuela Costa just one part of the mainly inland Orihuela municipality.

Two Polish men who are accused of stealing and taking apart motorbikes, which were then parcelled up to be put back together in Poland, have been arrested at a La Zenia address by the National Police. Investigations started at the end of November, though details have only just been released by the National Police. Two months ago officers arrested a man who was stealing a motorbike from a community garage, after being tipped off by somebody who spotted what was going on. The thief was caught in the act, and a rental van was on site to

move stolen bikes, with officers also discovering walkie-talkies and electronic devices. The arrest led the National Police to raid a property in La Zenia being used by the duo, and which they had been at for a month, which is exactly the same period of time that a spate of bike thefts had been reported in the area. Authorities said that the robbers would use magnetic keys to access community garages on the Orihuela Costa and use tools to break any padlocks on the bikes, and would then roll them up a ramp into their rental van. The next part of the process would see the bikes

dismantled and have any identification marks changed, before being packaged and sent through a parcel company to Poland, where they were reassembled and then sold on the black market. National Police officers found two pallets full of packaged and dismantled bikes on the patio of the La Zenia address. The Polish nationals, aged in their early forties, have been charged with a variety of crimes including burglary, forgery and belonging to a criminal group. Their court appearance resulted in one of them being denied bail.

New Wall Worry Valencia's Ministry of Education wants a home owner to stop building a wall which is in the perimeter area of the Los Dolses school on the Orihuela Costa. The Ministry, according to the Informacion newspaper, has asked Orihuela's planning department to order the work to be stopped as it considers the construction to be potentially dangerous to the youngsters who use the school, Last October, parents said they were concerned about the state of part of a wall (pictured) which borders the

school playground, which was closed for a time as a precaution after cracks were spotted in the wall. Temporary fencing was installed, whilst an impasse

continues between the Ministry of Education and Orihuela Council as to who is actually responsible for the wall and who should replace and maintain it.

ARRIVERDERCI FAUSTO!

An Italian mafia boss who had been on the run for 25 years has been arrested in the Alicante area at Playa de San Juan, where had been living in a luxury penthouse apartment. The National Police, along with their Italian counterparts, detained infamous mafioso Fausto Pellegrinetti who is believed to be placed

high up in Rome's mafia hierarchy and was charged with drug trafficking and money laundering. He has since been sentenced to 13 years in prison in his absence after being on the run since 1993 when he escaped from house arrest in Rome. He had been living under a false identity in the Alicante area

for several years. The charges against him included trafficking more than 550 kilogrammes of cocaine under the mafia ring 'La Magliana.' He is also thought to have had close ties with other prominent mafioso clans, including the Marsigliesi, Berenguer, Bellicini and Bergamelliu.

Spa Restoration

Blackmail Plotters

The Guardia Civil have arrested two women for extorting 90 thousand euro and two cars from a San Miguel de Salinas man in order to stop them telling his partner that he had hired the services of a prostitute. The man told authorities last month that he was being blackmailed by a prostitute he met at a nightclub in Torrevieja a year ear-

lier. After the meetings, the woman began to ask for large sums of money to prevent her telling his partner what had been going on. The victim made a bank deposit of 40 thousand euro and a further 25 thousand euro, with the blackmailer getting greedier and demanding a further 25 thousand euro, plus the “lending” of two-high end

cars, which were never returned to him. Extensive inquiries by the Guardia Civil led to the arrest of a 32-year-old Romanian woman and a 36year-old Bosnian woman for extortion crimes and other transgressions. Both haver already appeared in court and have been bailed ahead of their trial.

Orange Spill A lorry carrying oranges rolled over last Friday afternoon after it had taken the slip road off the AP-7 towards the Toro de Pilar de la Horadada roundabout, The driver was trapped in his cab and was given initial help by other motorists. An ambulance took him to hospital for a check-up, having avoided any serious injuries, but with a lot of his orange cargo spread off the road.

Sunday Blaze The long-delayed work on revamping the Floridablanca Spa at Lo Pagan should start before the summer, according to San Pedro del Pinatar mayor, Visitación Martínez. The contract for 810 thousand euro project has been

awarded by the Murcia regional government for the redevlopment of the iconic local structure, with Martínez saying that dismantling at the site will take place first, ahead of the building work which is scheduled to finish before

the end of the year. Besides the Spa being a bathing facility, a resturant and museum will also be created, with other similar structures on the Mar Menor targetted for improvement and reopening by the Murcia administration.

Three thousand square metres of scrub land in the Albatera area was burnt on Sunday afternoon, with fire crews from Crevillente and Elche called in to extinguish the blaze. The area affected was situated close to the roundabout linking the Albatera road to the AP-7 motorway.

Garbage Removed Three waste dumps on the Orihuela Costa have been cleared according to Orihuela environment councillor, Miguel Ángel Fernández. The dumps were located on municipal land, and the councillor said they damaged the local surroundings. Some 200 tons of rubbish have been removed, mainly formed by construction material , at a cost of seven euro.

“The risks to public health or causing a fire have been

reduced”, Fernández.

Illegal Rebranding

The National Police have arrested a man from Torrellano near Elche for 'doctoring' the bodywork of a mainstream family saloon car and selling it as a genuine Ferrari. The accused, 43, a mechanic, had altered the

shape and design of a fairly old vehicle and stuck actual Ferrari badges on it, so that to the untrained eye, it looked like a real sports car by the famous Italian manufacturers. He then put it up for sale online as a Ferrari on a well-

known, but undisclosed, auction site. Police traced the accused to the garage he worked at in Torrellano. They took him into custody and charged him, but he has since been released pending trial.

Free Range Only The Lidl supermarket chain has become the first retail group in Spain to stop selling any products from battery hens. Grocery retailers in Spain have all agreed that by the year 2025, only free-range hen produce will be on their shelves, but Lidl has decided to start seven years early. Mercadona and El Corte Inglés had agreed to progressively ensure no battery-hen goods were stocked between now and the 2025 deadline. Director-general of Lidl in Spain, Miguel Paradela, says the chain is 'committed to animal welfare and sustainability' without compromising on its mission of 'offering the best quality at the lowest prices'. All eggs retailed in Lidl stores in Spain come from four national producers, including the San Miguel and García Puente farms, and between them have

invested over 40 million euro in adapting their methods and premises to Lidl's requirements that none of their hens are caged. Paradela says even in times of high demand, the four farms' investments mean they are able to cope

and Lidl will not have to resort to importing eggs to stock its shelves. Lidl now guarantees that all eggs sold are free-range, as it has stopped selling those marked as 'category 3', or produced by battery hens.

Teenage Vandals

High Speed Flop

Justice has caught up with seven youngsters who went onto an arson spree in Callosa de Segura back in October on Halloween night, and carried on with their illegal activities through to

early December. 19 items were torched by the children, all of Spanish nationality, and that included a car; an abandoned house; and various bins. One of the youngsters

detained by the Guardia Civil was aged 13 and below the age of criminal responsibility, but the others have been made available to the Alicante Children’s Prosecutor.

Pigging Out There were red faces all round as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy ended up being stuck on the first high speed AVE train service between Madrid and Castellón in the northern part of the Valencia region. Rajoy, along with the Public Works Minister, Iñigo de la Serna, and Valencian President, Ximo Puig (pictured left) plus a gaggle of journalists, was on the inaugural trip of the new route, which is meant to shave half-an-hour off the overall travel time to the capital.

The new high-speed train, already described in local media as "the tortoise", arrived 30 minutes late, marking the start of a service that has taken 11 years to finish. The new AVE service opened to the public on Tuesday, but will only run at 100km per hour on the stretch between Valencia and Castellón, and must share the track with slower local and regional trains. Journalists on board the train with the Prime Minister gleefully posted photos on Twitter of one such slower

local train overtaking the new high-speed machine on Monday morning. One reporter said the delay had been due to a problem with one of the points motors that moves trains between tracks, but rail operator Renfe said the delay might have been due to a track scheduling conflict with those local trains, given the exceptional nature of Monday's journey. The Public Works Minister described the opening of the new line as "another milestone in high-speed trains in Spain".

La Mata’s Plaza de Encarnación Puchol hosted the annual meat feast on Sunday in order to celebrate the International Day of the Pig. It’s the 18th time the event has taken place in La

Mat, and was blessed by perfect weather, in contrast to two previous commemorations which had to be postponed by a week due to inclement conditions. Approximately three

thousand people enjoyed four hundred kilos of pork along with one hundred litres of local wines, eight barrels of beer, and one hundred and twentyfive loaves of bread.

Puigdemont Pledge

Ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont vowed on Monday to form a new government despite "threats" from the central government in Madrid after a Spanish Supreme Court judge refused to re-issue a European warrant for his arrest. "We will not surrender to authoritarianism despite Madrid's threats," Puigdemont (pictured on Monday) said at a debate on Catalunya at the University of Copenhagen. "Soon we will form a new government ... it's time to end their oppression and find a political solution for Catalunya," the 55-year-old politician added. Puigdemont's comments came hours after the speaker of the Catalan parliament proposed him as president of Catalunya following an election in December in which separatist parties

once again won an absolute majority. Roger Torrent said Puigdemont's candidacy to return as head of Catalunya's regional government is "absolutely legitimate" even though the secessionist leader faces criminal proceedings in Spain over his role in Catalunya's outlawed independence bid. With his arrival in Denmark, Puigdemont defied Spanish prosecutors' attempts to re-issue a European arrest warrant if he left Belgium, where he has been in exile since a failed October declaration of independence from Spain. Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena turned down the warrant request. "Fundamental freedoms have been undermined, democratically elected politicians have been sent to prison and treated like terrorists," he said in

Copenhagen, describing Spain's moves to arrest proindependence Catalunyan politicians as acts of "revenge". Puigdemont is now eyeing a return to power after proindependence parties won an absolute majority in Catalunyan regional elections in December. He wants to be sworn in from Belgium, where he fled in late October after the Catalan parliament declared unilateral independence and Madrid sacked his cabinet over their breakaway attempt. Charged with rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds, Puigdemont faces arrest if he returns to Spain over his role in the independence drive. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reiterated on Saturday that governing Catalunya from abroad would be "illegal".

Rating Boost

The Fitch ratings agency has upgraded Spain's sovereign debt rating, pointing to the country's growing economy and improving fiscal health. The economic impact of Catalunya's efforts to declare independence has been "limited" so far but the political stand-off will weigh on growth, the agency said. Fitch raised Spain's long-

term debt rating one notch to "A-" with a stable outlook. Spain was downgraded in 2012 by all major ratings agencies amid fears Madrid could require a bailout due to the weakness of its banks. Fitch said last Friday that Spain was enjoying the fruits of an economic recovery, with the economy likely having expanded by an average

of three point three percent between 2015 and 2017. "The Spanish banking sector's overall credit fundamentals have steadily improved over the last two years," Fitch said, noting that the share of non-performing loans and foreclosed assets were still elevated but had fallen from 11 percent to 10 percent in the year ending in June.

Expensive Picture

A man is to be fined for taking a photograph of a speed trap on the AP-7 in northern Spain and uploading it onto social media. Catalunya's equivalent of the Guardia Civil, the Mossos d'Esquadra, saw the 23-year-old on the roof of a service station in Garrigàs in Girona province. Officers were at the roadside watching for speeding drivers.

Once they realised they had been published on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, they were able to identify the man with the camera. He could be fined between 601 and 30,000 euro for a 'serious breach' of the Law of Public Security, which bans anyone from taking pictures or videos of the police in the course of duty.

Migrant Tragedy

Two migrants died after their boat sank while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to European shores at the weekend. Both men were of subSaharan origin and their boat was located late on Saturday evening about 16 kilometres west of the Island of Alboran. The first man was found dead in the water by a fishing boat that had taken on 32 migrants from the sinking vessel and saved another two who were overboard. A rescue helicopter and ship arrived in time to pull two more men from the water.

The rescue service said one of the men could not be saved. The service said that it also saved another 51 migrants from two other boats between late Saturday and Sunday morning. It added that Moroccan officials reported they saved 18 more from two small boats. Europe’s border watchdog said last Friday that 22,880 migrants had arrived in Spain last year by sea, up from 10,231 in 2016. It warned it expects the number of migrants using the western Mediterranean route to Europe to increase this year.

Big Mik Invests

A Russian billionnaire has become the largest shareholder in Día supermarkets after buying 25 percent of the national chain's capital. Mikhail Fridman increased his investment in the store, with Día's board of directors stressing there is no intention on Fridman's part to launch a takeover bid. The billionnaire also holds shares in the petroleum sector, the banking and telecommunications indus-

tries, and he was also one of the founders of the Russian financial entity Alfa-Bank. Día is one of the Ibex 35 – the 35 companies on the Spanish stock market with the highest capital. It has 7,400 stores across the world including in Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil and earned over 100 million euros in the first nine months of 2017 – a fall of 11.7 percent on the same period in 2016.

Sentence Upheld

The so-called 'Paedophile of Ciudad Lineal' who was sentenced to over 70 years in jail has lost his appeal after his custodial term was upheld by the Supreme Court, the highest contentious audience in Spain. Antonio Ortiz, described by court psychiatrists as 'arrogant and narcissistic' with 'an inflated sense of entitlement' which meant he felt 'no remorse' for his actions and persistently denied them despite evidence of his guilt, is known to have targeted at least four girls aged between six and

nine while they were playing in a park in the Madrid neighbourhood of Ciudad Lineal. One of them was raped in her own home, as she had her door key on a cord around her neck. Of the four victims, one was of Chinese origin and the other Japanese, and the other two are believed to be Spanish, whilst a girl from the Dominican Republic nearly became the fifth victim, but got away. In most cases, he took his victims to his mother's flat in Coslada, Madrid, when she was out, and raped them

whilst they were dozy or unconscious. He then washed them to remove evidence and released them, still drowsy or asleep, in stretches of wasteland several kilometres from where he had found them. Although Ortiz, 45, is sentenced to 70 years and six months, he will only have to serve 20 years, which was the maximum for child abuse at the time of the crime, in summer 2014, before a draft law allowing for permanent life imprisonment was produced in Spain.

Shakira’s Tax Debt

Colombian pop star Shakira may have to cough up 'tens of millions' of euro to Spain's tax authorities as they consider she should have registered as a resident for fiscal purposes in the country between 2011 and 2014. PriceWaterhouseCoopers , who form part of the 40year-old singer’s legal and financial advisory team, said it had been informed by the Treasury that her worldwide earnings – not just the money she earned in Spain over the four-year period in question – should have been declared to national

authorities. Given the amount involved, namely over 120 thousand euro, the Treasury considers this a 'criminal offence' rather than a civil breach. Shakira's advisors already said some months ago when her tax residence was questioned that during the period from 2011 to 2014 inclusive – before she took a career break to become a full-time mum – the singer, songwriter and musician spent the vast majority of her time outside Spain. They did not therefore consider she was tax resi-

dent in Spain, and say she has always complied with her fiscal obligations. It is not a question of Shakira's never having paid the taxes in question, but that she may have declared them to the wrong national authorities, her legal team maintains – or a 'difference in criteria' rather than 'tax evasion' per se. For the moment, neither Spain's tax authorities, nor the prosecution – which has become involved due to the amount making non-payment automatically becoming a 'criminal' issue – have been willing to comment.

Plastic Action

Balearic Island regional authorities want to ban coffee machine capsules and various other plastic items from the year 2020 as a total of 193 countries worldwide have signed up to the United Nations declaration against the material. Spain is one of these 193 countries which has pledged to abolish non-recyclable plastic to cut pollution in the world's oceans in light of evidence which shows that from the year 2050, this sub-

stance could start to outnumber fish and other fauna in the seas. But the Balearic Islands have gone a step further and announced a deadline for banning plastic. Everyday objects that may have to be remade with other substances include dishwasher and washing machine capsules, drinking straws, cotton buds, bottles, carrier bags, cling film, cigarette lighters, disposable plates and cutlery, and wetwipes, since the latter are

not biodegradable and have led to massive fatbergs forming in pipes affecting entire cities, including the recent case in London. As yet, the region has not confirmed how it will go about replacing these disposable goods, although it is likely that a fresh market for biodegradable household items could arise in the next few years with more and more manufacturers seeking different materials for their products.

Franco’s Problems

Dictator General Franco's grandson could be jailed for up to six years for dangerous driving and causing injury to a police officer following a high-speed chase through the province of Teruel in Aragón dating back to April 2012. His trial began on Monday, with state prosecutors considering they have a water-tight case that Francis Franco Martínez-Bordiú (pictured), and one of his employees, Silviu Nicolae, were both in the former's car on the N-234 near the village of Calamocha on the day in question and driving with their headlights off. They were pulled up by the Guardia Civil, but Francis Franco – who was driving – stepped on the gas and the pair fled the scene at high speed. Police said Franco 'ignored traffic signals' and was driving 'dangerously', putting themselves and other road-users at serious risk. A police chase through country lanes, along mountain passes and through forest areas ensued, until the Guardia Civil managed to block off Franco's car on a woodland lane between Collados and Lagueruela. But when officers surrounded them, Silviu Nicolae reportedly pointed a gun at them, whilst Franco reversed, apparently deliberately, into the Guardia Civil patrol car,

dragging it several metres. After this, Franco fled once again with Nicolae in the car through forested mountain passes, and their car was found dumped, without the keys, later that day in the village of Bea. One of the two Guardia Civil officers was injured when Franco crashed into their car. Although Nicolae was not driving and cannot be held responsible for the car fleeing the scene, his pointing a gun at the police is enough for him to be charged with threatening an officer, and he and Franco both face up to four years in jail for this offence. Additionally, Franco is considered to be guilty of dangerous driving, injuring an officer and causing damage to a police vehicle, which would earn him two more years in prison on top of fines and compensation. The injured officer has filed a private prosecution in which he calls for four-year sentences for both men for threatening a police official and a year on top for Franco for dangerous driving. Franco's solicitor says he was in Madrid on the day of the alleged offences, and that he has only been accused because of a contract hire agreement on the car in the name of a company owned by the Franco-Martínez-Bordiú family and that Francis Franco was the named driver.

Not Wanted Woody

A women's association in Asturias has called for the bronze statue of Woody Allen in the centre of the region's largest city, Oviedo, to be taken down. The Asturias Feminist Organisation says the veteran film director is 'not fit to be given a tribute' of this type, in light of the allegations of sexual abuse against his adopted daughter Dylan having come to light again. A call for the statue to be removed was first made in November for International Anti-Gender Violence Day.

The hyperrealist bronze figure, the work of Asturiasbased sculptor Vicente Santarua, was set up on Calle de las Milicias Nacionales in 2003 in homage to the scriptwriter, director and actor on his visit to Oviedo when he was presented with what was then known as the Prince of Asturias Award. Allen has visited Asturias on numerous occasions for his holidays, and chose locations from the region to use in scenes for the movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona starring Scarlett Johansson.

How to drive safely in winter

There are many winter lovers wholike visiting cities during cold periods or participating in snow sports. One must admit that it is not the same visiting, for instance, Sierra Nevada covered by snow, adding an extra attraction to these magical mountains, than without it. But if you go driving, this can be harrowing, especially where blizzard and icy conditions crop up seemingly out of nowhere. If, after all, you decide to drive, there are some recommendations to take into account:

•Do not use cruise control in wintery conditions •Accelerate and decelerate slowly •Increase your distance to the car ahead •If possible, don't stop when going uphill •Keep your gas tank at least half-full 4. Don't Leave Home Without These In an emergency situation, there are a few things that you should have with you at all times, such as a properly inflated spare tyre, wheel wrench and tripod jack, shovel, jump leads, tyre chains, tool kit, flashlight and extra batteries, reflective triangles, first aid kit, ice scraper, nonperishable high-energy foods, blankets and gloves.

1. Check the weather before you go If the weather is freezing, warm up the car before you drive it. If the forecast looks unpredictable, wait out the storm if possible. But if you must travel, make sure you share your travel plans and route with someone before you leave. If you become stranded in an unfamiliar area, do not leave your car. Place reflective triangles in front and behind the car and make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow, mud or any other object. 2. Prepare Your Car for Winter Besides checking the weather, it's important to have a mechanic check the condition of the following vehicle systems before heading out on the road: ignition, brakes, wiring, hoses and fan belts, spark plugs, air, fuel and emissions filters, distributor, battery, tyre wear and air pressure and check the antifreeze level.

Also do not forget to have your Roadside Assistance number at hand. Liberty Seguros Roadside Assistance is at your disposal 24/7 through a Free Phone Number, 900101369, where you will be assisted by an English speaking operator. Winter road trips – even short ones – are a great way to celebrate with family and friends. As well as providing you with insurance to cover you for any unexpected accident or loss, Liberty Seguros would encourage you to be fully prepared when driving in adverse conditions. Being prepared can ensure a safe and happy time is had by all.

3. Know What to Do to Avoid a Crash Sometimes water or ice on the road can surprise drivers, even with little to no precipitation. So, if you don´t want to be surprised and end up in a crash, here are some tips: • Never mix radial tyres with other types of tyres • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather

Dogs and cats are perhaps more important to our health than we realise, according to a new survey. A study has found dog ownership is linked to improved heart health for humans, and this is an important finding, given that heart disease is the leading cause of death. While the new study focuses on dogs and heart disease, it raises the broader question of how pet ownership affects human longevity. Can pets create health in humans? A survey called the “Blue Zone” study has focused on factors affecting longevity for over a decade. Nine factors have been identified as increasing lifespan in the communities studied, and many of these factors are increased by pets. Much of the focus on pets providing health has been on dog walking. But anyone who owns a pet knows there are numerous incidental physical activities associated with pet ownership – like getting up to feed their pet; ensuring the pet’s food and water is available; and looking after pet “accommodation”. Reducing prolonged sitting and increasing incidental domestic activity have both been shown to be protective with regard to health risks. At the very simplest level, pets can provide “a reason to get up in the morning”. This has been shown to be particularly important for groups at risk of, or experiencing, poorer health – including the elderly, people with mental illness or chronic diseases. Interaction with pets can reduce stress. There is evidence petting an animal may reduce heart rates and co-sleeping with pets may improve some people’s quality of sleep. It’s in the area of relationships that pets may have their most powerful role in longevity, according to the “Blue Zone” study. Pets can act as a social catalyst, promoting social connections, conversations, and even leading to the development of networks of practical support (a form of commitment).

The role pets play in mental health (as compared to physical health) may be where the strongest connection to individual longevity lies. There is an established link between heart disease and mental unwellness. People with long-term mental illness, autism, and the homeless, report their pets as providing non-judgmental, simpler relationships than those with humans. Older people report pets reducing loneliness and social isolation. Pets may improve vulnerable people’s interaction with others directly (improving social skills), or their social catalyst role can override social prejudice. There is plenty to chew over in the “Blue Zone” study, and many pet owners will feel that it strikes a chord with them!

On Their Radar

The National Police have smashed a gang of drugs smugglers operating close to the Gibraltar border who tried to stay one step ahead of the law with an elaborate system of radars inside their beach front villas. The criminals were able to track the location of police patrols including force helicopters from the comfort of their own homes - and instruct accomplices on when to bring boats carrying lucrative loads of cannabis

resin ashore. Ten members of the gang, based in La Linea, were arrested and several vehicles seized along with guns and around £50,000 in cash. Footage released by the National Police showed the elaborate equipment the drug smugglers were using to keep them under watch, which included two aerials and a screen similar to the ones air traffic controllers use to keep track of the

movement of planes in the sky. The investigation which led to the arrests and seizure of guns, money and boats began at the end of 2016. The drugs the gang were bringing in came from Morocco and were stored in warehouses guarded by “keepers” after being transported by car from the semi-rigid Zodiacs used at sea. As well as the system of radars, they also used satellite phones.

Paying The Price

Spain’s Interior Minister has revealed that the special deployment of thousands of Guardia Civil and National Police officers in Catalunya last autumn to stop a banned referendum on independence ultimately cost the state 87 million euro. Juan Ignacio Zoido strongly defended the police

operations around the October 1st vote, which did not subside fully until the last withdrawal of extra police patrols three months later. The clashes during the referendum saw hundreds of would-be voters reporting injuries and police actions were criticised around the world. But the minister said their response at the time

was “legitimate, proportional and professional”. “They used the least force possible,” Mr Zoido told a parliamentary committee. He said he regretted the injuries, “which never should happen”, when police attempted to close down polling stations during what he called “perfectly organised passive resistance”.

Pineapple Surprise The National Police, with help from their colleagues in Portugal, have seized 745 kilograms of cocaine that were disguised as fresh pineapples. The joint investigation, which began in April 2017, also saw the dismantling of two laboratories and arrest of nine members belonging to a drug trafficking ring, two of whom were Colombian brothers that led the operation. Investigators also confiscated half a million euros in cash. According to the authorities, those arrested would acquire the drug in Barcelona and later store it inside secured housing in Terrassa. From there, the cocaine was transported to Madrid to be processed and

distributed. Traffickers would pick up the cocaine from Terrassa every 15 to 20 days. Though most of the drug handling took place in Spain, officials in Portugal became involved in the investigation after it was discovered that the cocaine-infused

pineapples were being shipped to Lisbon before arriving in Spain. "This organised international group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent," Portuguese investigators said in a statement.

Beached Whale The carcass of a pilot whale was found on a beach in the northern Cantabria region on Sunday morning prompting fears it died from plastic pollution. The 13.1ft long whale was discovered by passers-by on Langre beach. One man told the local newspaper El Diario Montanes: 'The amount of plastic on this beach is spectacular. The animal may have died from all that dirt.' Experts from the Rural

Environment department collected the body of the whale to study what

happened, and it’s believed that strong tides brought the whale on to the beach.

Rajoy’s Downer

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s ruling Partido Popular would only get 23.2 percent of the vote if a general election was to held now, according to a recent opinion poll. It shows the centrist Ciudadanos party, led by Albert Rivera in the lead on 27 percent, on the back of becoming the largest single party in last month’s

Catalunya regional elections. Compiled by Metroscopia, the poll revealed that Rajoy has suffered a big drop at the hands of voters following from his handling of the Catalunya crisis where he cracked down and imprisoned separatist leaders. The socialist PSOE party is third in the standings at 21 percent, with the left-wing

Podemos trailing at 15 percent. Rajoy’s allies are said to believe the 62-year-old has just 12 months to turn things around. Narciso Michavila, chairman of pollster GAD3 said:“Rajoy is very likely aware of the push for renewal everywhere. He’s probably open to the idea that he won’t be the candidate for the next election.”

Reading Trends

Over four in 10 Spaniards never read for pleasure, according to a publishers' association which surveyed men and women aged over 14. But those who do read when they do not have to have risen in number in the last five years by around 2.8 percent possibly due to the ever-increasing proliferation of novels in varied genres of fiction being published. The Professional Editors in Spain Federation (FGE) says 59.7 percent of Spanish nationals reads in their spare time for reasons other than work or study, when taking into account all

forms of text – the media in print, novels, both of these online, informative articles and debates. Their research found that women are more likely to read novels, magazines and social media publications, whilst men are more inclined to read the press, comics, and websites. Of Spain's 17 autonomously-governed regions, Madrid is the one with the highest number of pleasure-readers, although the greatest increases have been seen in the northern regions of Navarra, La Rioja and Asturias, in that order, followed by local represen-

tation in the shape of Murcia. Over 40 percent of Spain's population only ever reads in paper format – traditional books and printed magazines and newspapers – whilst 20 percent mostly read novels in e-reader or Kindle format. Online or e-reading sources now make up 76.3 percent of all reading material – up from 58.3 percent in 2012 – although broken down into text types, it is mainly the press and social media publications that are read online rather than novels.

January Sizzler A year on from freezing weather and the first appearance of snow in some parts of the area in the best part of a century, the southern Costa Blanca and Mar Menor have basked in unseasonably high temperatures as bathers took to the sea. Warm westerly winds saw Orihuela City hit a temperature high of 26.4ºC on Monday afternoon, which Pedro. J.Cascales of the MeteOrihuela website said was the warmest January day there since 1973. Other temperatures in the area saw Dolores hitting 26

degrees and Torrevieja 25

degrees.

Spruced Up Icon There's going to be a new place to stay the night if you go on a break to Spain's capital, with the news that Madrid's iconic Plaza de España building will finally open as a four-star hotel next summer. It will be operated by the international holiday resort chain Riu. Major renovation works – which the company described as 'a great challenge' for its technical team – started back in October after months of redrafts of the eventual hotel design, which had to include all creature comforts whilst 'retaining all the historic elements' of the huge tower block, according to CEO, Carmen Riu. It will be Riu Hoteles' first branch in Madrid and its 'flagship' in Spain, Carmen Riu says – a 3,000-squaremetre complex with 589 suites and 15 meeting rooms, complete with facilities for social events, parties and corporate occasions. Riu Hoteles bought the Plaza de España block – known as the 'Edificio España' – just before last summer, purchasing it from

the Murcia-based firm Trinitario Casanova, who had acquired it from the Chinese company Wanda Group. Trinitario initially loaned the building to Riu to turn into a hotel, but the chain then decided to buy it, although the Murcia company was involved in the reno-

vation project and will use the first three storeys and the shopping area. Before the two-year revamp started, the Edificio España had sat empty and abandoned for 11 years, with ongoing maintenance works carried out just to stop it falling to rack and ruin.

Dodgy Digits

A regional watchdog has warned of a scam involving missed calls which, when the recipient rings back, charges them €1.20 a minute. The Extremadura Consumers' Union (UCE) says the numbers are typically non-Spanish and are prefixed 225, 233, 234 or 355, and if the call is returned, transfers to a premium-rate line.

According to the UCE, these are country prefixes for Côte d'Ivoire (formerly Ivory Coast), Ghana, Nigeria and Albania respectively. Users have said that when they return the call, they hear an automated message from what claims to be a solicitors' firm handling a case concerning them. At this point, either the message continues for 'an

unnecessarily long time', or it cuts off and the caller rings back. In addition to the €1.20 a minute, simply connecting the call costs up to five euros says the UCE. Earlier this month, Local Police in the Huelva Province town of Lepe reported a similar fraud attempt involving calls with the prefix 0021, which is Tunisia.

Top Dog Zara

High-street fashion chain Zara is Spain's most valuable brand for the first time ever, according to recent rankings, ahead of Movístar and Banco Santander. The Mejores Marcas Españolas 2017 report lists the top 30 names in the country, and the Inditex clothing empire's most

famous name, Zara, is at number one after its net worth increased in 2017 by 45 percent to just under €15.5 billion, making it the brand that showed the most growth last year. Movístar, formerly number one, shrank by 12 percent and now holds a net worth of just less than €10.65bn.

Banco Santander, worth nearly €5.6bn, its high-street rival, the BBVA bank, worth almost €4.7bn, and another Inditex brand – Zara's 'younger sister' Bershka, worth €1.42bn and up 18 percent- make up the top five and their positions are unchanged from the end of 2016.

Blood test could spot eight common cancers Scientists have made a major advance towards developing a blood test for cancer that could identify tumours long before a person becomes aware of symptoms. The new test, which is sensitive to both mutated DNA that floats freely in the blood and cancer-related proteins, gave a positive result approximately 70% of the time across eight of the most common cancers when tested in more than 1,000 patients. In the future, such a test could be used in routine screening programmes to significantly increase the proportion of patients who get treatment early, at a time before cancer would typically show up on conventional scans. “The use of a combination of selected biomarkers for early detection has the potential to change the way we screen for cancer, and it is based on the same rationale for using combinations

of drugs to treat cancers,” said Nickolas Papadopoulos, professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins University and senior author on the paper. The test could also identify the form of cancer that a patient had, a goal that previous cancer blood tests have failed to achieve. It works by detecting freefloating mutated DNA, released into the bloodstream by dying cancer cells. The test screened for the presence of errors in 16 genes that are frequently mutated in different kinds of cancer. The blood of patients was also tested for eight known protein biomarkers which are seen to differing degrees depending on where in the body a tumour is located. In blood samples from 1,005 patients, the test detected between 33% and 98% of cases of disease. Ovarian cancer was the easiest to detect, followed

by liver, stomach, pancreas, oesophageal, colorectal, lung and breast cancers. For the five cancers that currently have no screening tests – ovarian, liver, stomach, pancreatic and oesophageal cancers – sensitivity ranged from 69% to 98%. When the test was assessed on 812 healthy control subjects, it produced

only seven false-positive results. “Very high specificity was essential because falsepositive results can subject patients to unnecessary invasive follow-up tests and procedures to confirm the presence of cancer,” said Kenneth Kinzler, professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins and a co-author of the paper.

The patients in the trial had non-metastatic – ie localised – stage one to three cancers. Experts noted that the rates of detection were lowest in those who had the earliest stages of the illness – and might be expected to be even lower in people who had not yet shown any symptoms. Paul Pharoah, professor of cancer epidemiology at the University of Cambridge, said: “There are some major caveats. Firstly, 80% of the cancers evaluated were stage two or stage three cancers – fairly advanced. Demonstrating that a test can detect advanced cancers does not mean that the test will be useful in detecting early stage symptomatic cancer, much less presymptomatic cancer. The sensitivity for the stage one cancers in the study was only 40%.” Chris Abbosh, of the UCL Cancer Institute, described the work as exciting. “This is one of the first studies to

combine protein biomarkers and circulating tumour DNA as a screening tool and to [apply] this tool across a range of cancer types in a large cohort of patients.” Although the current test does not pick up every cancer, it identifies many cancers that would likely otherwise go undetected. “Many of the most promising cancer treatments we have today only benefit a small minority of cancer patients, and we consider them major breakthroughs. If we are going to make progress in early cancer detection, we have to begin looking at it in a more realistic way, recognising that no test will detect all cancers,” said Bert Vogelstein, also a professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins. The team behind the test, known as CancerSEEK, predicted it would eventually cost less than $500 per patient. The findings are published in the journal Science.

Cycling 'doesn't cause sexual or urinary problems in men', survey finds In recent years, there have been enough reports claiming that cycling can have a negative impact on sperm quality and erectile function. So much so, that many men with hopes of one day starting a family may have thought twice before donning the Lycra and hitting the road. But a new report indicates it's safe for men to get in the saddle, as cycling doesn't pose an increased risk of sexual or urinary dysfunction. Numerous studies have given rise to the belief that cycling can have detrimental effects on sexual or urinary health due to prolonged pressure on the perineum and micro-trauma. But the researchers involved in this latest study say that previous findings were the result of poor study methods. Namely, they failed to use

validated measures or comparison groups and had limited sample sizes. In contrast, this new study is claimed to be the largest of its kind, involving 2,774 cyclists, 539 swimmers, and 789 runners from various countries. The participants

completed a number of validated questionnaires and also answered questions about urinary tract infections (UTIs), urethral strictures, genital numbness, and saddle sores. The research also took into account cycling intensity, bicycle and saddle

configuration, and even road conditions. The cyclists were divided into two groups – a low intensity group who cycled on a regular basis, and a high intensity group who had cycled three times per week, averaging 25 miles

(40 km) per day, for at least two years. The non-cyclist group consisted of those that didn't cycle on a regular basis, but who swim or run. In comparing the different groups, the researchers made some interesting findings. Sexual and urinary health were comparable across all participants, although some cyclists had a higher rate of urethral strictures. Perhaps most surprising for those that had read previous studies was the cyclists in the high intensity group had overall better erectile dysfunction scores than those in the low intensity group. Less surprising was the finding that standing for more than 20 percent of the time while riding significantly reduced the chances of genital numbness. In terms of the bicycle and road surface, the

researchers found that neither had a negative impact on cyclists, but riding with a handlebar height lower than the saddle height did increase the chances of genital numbness and saddle sores. "This is the largest comparative study to date, exploring the associations of cycling, bike and road characteristics with sexual and urinary function using validated questionnaires," says lead investigator Benjamin Breyer, MD, MAS, of the Department of Urology, University of California–San Francisco. "We believe the results will be encouraging for cyclists. Cycling provides tremendous cardiovascular benefits and is low impact on joints. We believe the health benefits enjoyed by cyclists who ride safely will far outweigh health risks."

WEIGHT GAIN CAUSED BY EATING TOO MUCH PROTEIN Most people concerned about weight gain look only at carbohydrates and fats as the culprits. Contrary to popular belief, proteins can also lead to weight gain. At our clinic, we carry out a Body Composition Analysis to determine a person’s nutrient levels, including their muscle mass and the carbs and protein levels in the body. In more cases than one, we see weight gain caused by high muscle mass and high levels of protein in the body. Proteins are crucial for maintaining, repairing and regenerating worn out parts of the body, especially the muscles. When people consume a diet that is rich in protein, the body will use what it needs and convert the excess to muscles which build up in the body. In addition to this, excess carbohydrates are converted to sug-

be eaten in whatever quantities a person desires. Weight loss will always come down to a calculation of energy input versus energy output. Let’s also put to bed the notion that meat and fish are the only sources of protein worth talking about. Lots of plants contain protein, including fruits and vegetables. Even grains, such as rice, contain this nutrient. Those interested in losing weight ought to focus on plant based sources of protein and cut down on their meat and fish intake. Ideally, a dieter should aim to eat meat or fish only every other day, rather than every day of the week. ars and stored as fat which also leads to weight gain. Many people believe they need to consume proteins every day to keep the body healthy. To some extent this

is true, but it is also important to examine the sources of dietary protein. Meat and fish are popular amongst people who are trying to boost their protein intake. These foods

are often over-consumed in the misguided belief that they are so good for the body that one does not need to exercise portion control. There is currently a so called

‘healthy eating trend’ that advocates such over-consumption. Let’s debunk the myth that meat and fish are the only sources of protein and can

Over half of 12-24 year olds have side effects from energy drinks, survey reports Simon Knowlesby "Energy drinks 'trigger nasty side effects like heart problems and seizures in half of kids'," is the potentially terrifying, but misleading, headline in The Sun. This is based on an online survey of more than 2,000 young people aged 12 to 24

years in Canada in 2015. The survey found that more than half of the young people who had ever had caffeinated energy drinks reported at least one side effect after drinking them. Unsurprisingly, the most common side effects were

related to the stimulant properties of caffeine-rich energy drinks, such as a fast heartbeat and difficulties sleeping. About a quarter reported having experienced a fast heartbeat, a similar proportion had difficulty sleeping,

and about a fifth experienced headache. Despite the headline making it sound much more common, actually only 1 in 500 children who drank these drinks reported having had seizures. And we can't be sure these seizures were directly linked to the energy drinks. Energy drinks are high in

caffeine and contain other stimulants that could affect health. They are often also high in sugar and therefore calories. As such, there are clearly healthier drinks options for children and young people. There are no official UK recommendations on caffeine consumption levels in

children. The European Food Standards Agency has advised that "daily intakes of caffeine [in children] up to 3mg/kg bw [body weight] do not raise safety concerns". For an average sized UK 14 year old (weighing about 50kg) this would result in an upper daily limit of 150mg of caffeine.

Mini Muffin Pizzas

Breakfast Muffins

This ingenious recipe means you can dish up delightful mini pizzas for kids in next to no time

Make muffins healthier with mashed banana and apple sauce for natural sweetness, plus blueberries and seeds for an extra nutritious hit Ingredients 2 large eggs 150ml pot natural low-fat yoghurt 50ml rapeseed oil 100g apple sauce or pureed apples (find with the baby food) 1 ripe banana, mashed 4 tbsp clear honey 1 tsp vanilla extract 200g wholemeal flour 50g rolled oats, plus extra for sprinkling 1½ tsp baking powder 1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1½ tsp cinnamon 100g blueberry

2 tbsp mixed seed (we used pumpkin, sunflower and flaxseed) Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with 12 large muffin cases. In a jug, mix the eggs, yogurt, oil, apple sauce, banana, honey and vanilla. Tip the remaining ingredients, except the seeds, into a large bowl, add a pinch of salt and mix to combine. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix briefly

until you have a smooth batter – don’t overmix as this will make the muffins heavy. Divide the batter between the cases. Sprinkle the muffins with the extra oats and the seeds. Bake for 25-30 mins until golden and well risen, and a skewer inserted into the centre of a muffin comes out clean. Remove from the oven, transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Ingredients 1 English breakfast muffin, cut in half 1 tbsp tomato purée 1 tsp red pesto 1 tbsp olive oil 2-3 button mushrooms, sliced ½ small red onion, sliced ½ small courgette, grated 1 slice of ham or salami, cut into small pieces 25g mozzarella or cheddar cheese, grated To serve Little Gem lettuce leaves mustard and cress 2-3 tbsp vinaigrette dress-

ing Method Preheat the grill to high and toast the muffin halves until golden. Leave the grill on. Mix the tomato purée and pesto and spread over the cut sides of the muffins. Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the mushrooms, onion and courgette for 45 minutes until softened and golden.

Season, then divide the vegetables between the two muffin halves, scatter over the ham or salami and top with the grated cheese. Place under the grill and cook for 4 minutes or until bubbling. Cut each muffin half in half again, and serve on two plates with the lettuce and mustard and cress tossed in vinaigrette. Ready in 15-25 mins Enough for 2 child portions

Veggie Toad-in-the-Hole

Ingredients 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 8 vegetarian sausages For the batter 4 medium eggs 325ml semi skimmed milk 250g plain flour Method To make the batter, beat the eggs and milk together in a bowl, add 1 tsp salt, then beat again and leave to stand for 30 mins. Tip in the plain flour and beat well with a whisk until smooth. If you can, make this 2 hrs before needed and allow to stand

before pouring into the tin. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Pour 2 tbsp oil in a 28 x 23cm roasting tin (or a tin roughly that size), coat the sausages in the oil and roast them in the oven for about 8-10 mins. Stir the batter, then remove the tin from the oven and pour the batter over the hot oil and sausages (you can do this over a low heat on the hob to keep the oil nice and hot). Put the tin back in the oven and cook for 10

mins, then turn the temperature down to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and cook for a further 25-30 mins or until the batter is cooked through. Test with a knife in the centre to check it’s cooked. Serve with the crunchy polenta, roast potatoes, caramelised carrots and veggie gravy, if you like, plus some green vegetables. Prep: 10 Mins Cook: 40 Mins Serves: 4

Garlic Chicken Parcels

Ingredients 2 chicken breasts 320g sheet all-butter puff pastry 150g Boursin or garlic & herb cream cheese ½ lemon, zested and cut into wedges to serve 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing 200g mixed pack green beans and broccoli Method Heat oven to 220C/200C Fan/gas 7. Cut a slit halfway

in each chicken breast, then put each one between two pieces of baking parchment and bash with a rolling pin to flatten slightly.

shut. Flip each parcel over so the seal is on the bottom. Brush with a little oil, then bake for 30 mins until deep golden.

Cut your sheet of pastry in half widthways and put both halves on a baking tray. Sit a chicken breast on top of each half, then cram the cavities with the Boursin (don’t worry if a bit of cheese oozes out). Season, scatter over the lemon zest then fold the edges of the pastry in to the centre and pinch

About 10 mins before your parcels are ready, steam or boil the greens until tender. Toss in the oil and season. Serve alongside your chicken parcels with lemon wedges for squeezing over. Prep: 10 Mins Cook: 30 Mins Serves: 2

Next Level Apple Crumble Ingredients For the crumble topping 225g plain flour 50g custard powder 250g cold butter, diced 100g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp Grape-Nuts cereal (optional) 75g rolled oats (optional) For the apples 50g butter 50g golden caster sugar 100ml cloudy apple juice 1 cinnamon stick 1 bay leaf 4 Bramley apples, peeled, cored and chopped into chunks 4 Cox’s apples, peeled, cored and sliced into 5mm thick rounds For the sugar and spice (optional) ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground allspice 1 tbsp golden caster sugar Method For the topping, add all the ingredients – other than the optional extras – to a food processor with a small pinch of salt. Pulse until the mixture resembles large breadcrumbs, but do not overwork (this can also be done by hand). Now toss through the optional topping ingredients, if using, then tip into a container, cover and freeze for at least 1 hr or until needed. Can be made up to one week ahead. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. If you want a dark, crumbly topping, tip the mixture onto a

baking sheet and bake for 810 mins until golden. Leave to cool and re-crumble, then set aside (keep the oven on). For the apples, add the butter, sugar, apple juice, cinnamon and bay to a saucepan. Boil vigorously until you have a sputtering, buttery caramel. Remove the bay and cinnamon, then throw in half the Bramley apples. Cook down to a purée, then remove from the heat and stir through the rest of the Bramley apple chunks until coated. Transfer to a baking dish. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 (if you part-baked your topping in step 1, it should already be at this

temperature). Arrange the sliced Cox’s apple over the cooked apples in an even layer. Sprinkle your choice of crumble mixture loosely and roughly over the top, then bake for 30-40 mins until the crumble has browned and the filling is bubbling at the sides (30 mins if you part-baked the crumble, but keep an eye on it). Leave to rest for 10 mins before serving. While the crumble is baking, make the optional sugar and spice blend by mixing all the ingredients with a small pinch of salt. Serve on the side to sprinkle over. Prep: 20 Mins Cook: 1 Hour Serves: 6

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

BBC 1’s Call The Midwife is like taking what you believe to be a soft centre chocolate out of a box and then biting into it and being surprised by a hard centre. Soft, fluffy and enjoyably sentimental on the outside, CTW has the excellent knack of being able to tackle a range of important stories and issues that were pretty much taboo or badly handled over half a century ago. Be it racism, mental health, sexism, gay and lesibian matters, abortion, single-parenthood, or the Thalidomide scandal, CTW has boldly gone into these topics and reminded us that the so-called “Good Old Days” were far from that, and the delightful new character Lucille (a West Indian midwife) will show up the racist attitude of this sixties in this Sunday’s episode. Call The Midwife is so strong and well written that it easily handles a regular turnover of cast changes and simply brings in new people that you take to straight away. It’s an excellent example of how a drama can be joyous and hard-hitting at the same

Midwife Delivers Again

time, and long may it continue. Sky Atlantic have a launched a wonderful piece of nonsense called Brittania, as we go back the best part of two thousand years to witness some nasty Romans invading Britain, and all of the consequences that follow. This nine episode romp penned by award-winning theatre writer Jez Butterworth stars David Morrissey as the Roman

general who stages the invasion, decades after Julius Caesar gave it up as a bad job. The invaders surprisingly find little resistance due to all the warring tribes and factions in the British Isles, and there’s loads of hocus pocus with druids, Celts, and weird rituals, plus Mackenzie Crook playing a shamen! You know the routine for something like Brittania with a mixture of laughs, violence, bad lan-

guage, sex, and sheer bafflement, but it worked for me. Historians will say it’s a load of old cobblers, but just sit back and enjoy something that I think will be around for a few years, based on big international sales figures secured by Sky. Incidentally, Brittania is co-produced by Neal Street Productions who are the makers of…….Call The Midwife! If you are a regular reader

of this column, you will know that I’m a big fan of American TV producer Ryan Murphy who seems to come up with new shows as fast as a hen laying eggs. His American Horror Story team have produced “911Emergency”, and you think, so what? Surely not another procedural involving first responders? This is different, which is what you expect from Murphy, as it sends up gently some of the Dick Wolf shows based in

Chicago, butis also tough and graphic at times, laced in with humour. I’ll keep it spoiler free, though it is waiting for a UK pick-up(two episodes in, Fox in the States ordered series two), but you’ll love the three experienced stars of Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, and Peter Krause, which is a recommendation in itself. Ryan Murphy has also done it again with his second series of American Crime Story, which after the fantastic OJ Simpson tale from two years ago, brings us “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”. BBC 2 has the UK rights and will transmit this in April, and I’ll write about it more at the time, but this is a gripping tale which explores the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. There are plenty of stars including Penelope Cruz as Versace’s sister and Ricky Martin at Versace’s partner, and once again shows why Ryan Murphy and his colleagues are the most creative in US television and given the freedom they want to do their work.

Martin Clunes’ brand new comedy set for BBC One

An original comedy series penned by exciting upcoming writers Paul McKenna and Jimmy Donny Cosgrove, which centres around the life of Warren Thompson, a pedantic driving instructor who thinks the world is against him, is coming soon to BBC One. Martin Clunes will star as titular character Warren, who is forced to move from the south up to Preston when his partner Anne’s father falls ill. Warren suddenly finds himself living in an area he doesn’t like, doing a job he’s not emotionally cut out for and looking after two teenage stepsons he never wanted. Warren loves Anne, and somehow, Anne always sees the good in Warren, but he has a way of knowing

best and speaking his mind that inevitably leads to conflict, chaos and disaster for those around him and most especially for himself. Warren is not growing old gracefully, he’s very much rooted in the now, with a modern voice and sharp edge. There are no happy endings for Warren as he grapples against the problems and misunderstandings of his own making. Martin Clunes says: “I had kind of told myself that I didn’t want to do another sitcom, but because this came from Hat Trick I thought it was worth a read and the script is just so funny that I didn’t want anyone else to do it.” Casting and transmission details will be announced in due course.

ITV commissions factual drama Anne “I will never give up my fight for justice. I will never fail my son. The system has failed him, and I cannot forgive those who allowed that to happen.” - Anne Williams (pictured right.) A drama about the inspirational woman who dedicated her life to campaigning for justice following her son’s death at Hillsborough has been commissioned by ITV. ITV’s Polly Hill has commissioned the mini-series, Anne, which will depict how Anne Williams challenged medical evidence following her son’s original inquest, and refused to accept its verdict of accidental death. Anne, was devastated by the loss of her son, 15-yearold Kevin, who was tragically killed at the FA Cup semifinal in 1989 between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Anne stood defiantly alongside other parents and their families who fought for justice for the 96 loved ones who lost their lives at a football match. Determined to unearth the truth about Hillsborough, Anne Williams refused to believe the official line on how the disaster unfolded, seeking new medical opin-

ion, tracking down witnesses whose statements were altered, and leaving no stone unturned in her fight for truth and justice. The four-part mini-series is written by Kevin Sampson, author of the book Hillsborough Voices, which depicts the tragic events of the day, and what unfolded in the hours, days and years after the disaster. Sampson was at the 1989 semi-final as a fan, and interviewed Anne Williams for Hillsborough Voices. The series has been developed with the support of her daughter, Sara, who was aged 9 when her brother died. Sara has carried on her Mum’s work, after her death in April 2013, and has assisted Kevin in the writing process. Filming will take place in late summer in Liverpool.

COME AND JOIN US! It’s the perfect time to consider joining Find A Spanish Property as a property associate, as property prices are on the rise, and the market is blossoming. 2016 was a positive year for the real estate market with prices having bottomed out the year before with modest price rises. Things have really kicked in during 2017, in strong contrast to the recession period that kicked in during 2008 and 2009. Official government figures confirm that prices are rising this year, and outside the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, Alicante Province which features the Costa Blanca, and the Murcia region with the Costa Calida tourist area, are two of the biggest areas on mainland Spain which are seeing substantial rises in demand along with price increases. The cranes are back with new homes being built by the coast, and the re-sale market continues to rise, fuelled by low interest rates in Spain. Statistics show that demand for homes from British buyers is still high, despite pessimistic fears last year over the Brexit factor, coupled with purchasers from across Europe, and even further afield. Recent surveys show that the majority of British people living in Spain are aged 65 and over, and website statistics confirm that older British nationals with no mortgage on their UK property are still very much looking at Spain as their area of choice to buy a holiday home, or even somewhere to retire to. It’s a great time to get involved in becoming a seller of real-estate in Spain, especially since most of the cowboys disappeared thanks to the recession nearly a decade ago. We like to think that we’ve played our own small part in helping to seeing them off, by offering an honest business that people are proud to recommend and that we now want to substantially expand.

Getting Started We will remove the pain and hassle of starting up your own estate agency by setting the all-important website that will market your business. The costs are cut, and you don’t need any experience of running an agency or experience of sales. The Apprentice has been hired for three more series by the BBC

Lord Alan Sugar isn't going anywhere, as The Apprentice appears to have been renewed by the BBC for three more series. The reality TV show recently ended its 13th run, but this latest development will ensure that it will continue on through to at least series 16 in 2020, according to Broadcast. The BBC said that The Apprentice will definitely be back later this year, but did not comment beyond that. The Apprentice – which centres on a group of aspiring businesspeople competing for the chance to become Lord Sugar's business partner – also features Karren Brady and Claude Littner as Lord Sugar's aides. The most recent series ended in surprising (and

controversial) fashion, as both finalists (Sarah Lynn and James White) ended up with £250,000 investments from Lord Sugar. Speaking afterwards of the historic double win, Lord Sugar explained that it came down to the fact he couldn't

decide between the pair. "This is a historic moment, I suppose, in the 13 years we've been doing this," he said. "And it's really because of what I said in the episode. I couldn't make a decision. It had to be both of them! "They were two genuinely great experts in their field and I'm looking forward to going into business with them." Series 13 managed an average of 6.9 million viewers per week, while the final had an audience of around 8 million. Applications for the next series, series 14 – which is expected to air on BBC One – opened in November.

The Crystal Maze is coming back again for a new series

In case you've been living in an, erm, maze, the classic '90s show The Crystal Maze is back and more popular than ever. After returning in 2016 for a one-off episode to raise money for Stand Up to Cancer, it's since been entertaining viewers with a glorious full series, hosted by The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade. And Channel 4 have said that it's just commissioned even more episodes of The Crystal Maze. Ayoade will once again guide the intrepid/foolhardy explorers through the Aztec, Industrial, Future and

Medieval Zones as they collect crystals to exchange for time in the iconic Crystal Dome. Applications open this week for teams of five contestants hoping to take a journey through the fiendish maze. There will be 12 new episodes in total, including six celebrity specials in aid of Stand Up to Cancer. The latest episodes will be filmed in the spring, and more new episodes already shot in 2017 will air later this year too. The upcoming contestants include a team of midwives, a group who met on jury service, friends from a deaf

school, and an AC/DC tribute band. It will continue to be filmed at the purpose-built set spanning over 30,000 square feet at Bristol's Bottle Yard Studios. In a statement, commissioning editor Tom Beck said: "The return of The Crystal Maze has been a huge success on 4, thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Richard Ayoade as the Maze Master and the inspired production team at Fizz. "I'm particularly pleased by the number of young viewers who loved the show – and it's nice to have finally made a programme I can watch with my children." The show's executive producer Neale Simpson added: "It was a huge privilege bringing this show back and it's been wonderful seeing young audiences engage with the new series and our magnificent Maze Master. "We can't wait to get back to creating more crystal collecting chaos. Can we possibly top Rob stuck on a spinning planet?" You can apply to be on the quiz at thecrystalmaze.com.

ADVICE: Hans was having issues with the Microsoft Card ADVICE: Margaret wanted to know how to remove email addresses from Facebook Games App in Windows 10

Q

Good morning Richard. We have a very little problem with this program in the Microsoft solitaire collection. When we put the button on this program it does nothing. All the other programs are working. It’s the program with all the games. Can you give us a solution? Thank you very much.

Q

A

The first thing to try is to restart the computer, if that doesn’t work then make sure that you have all of the latest updates installed. The final option would be to reinstall the package, details on how to do this are below…

Hi Margaret, firstly, well done! Keeping your online services (like Facebook) up to date with your current email address is a very good thing to do, it means that if you have problems with your account, you will have the correct email address registered to help you sort it out. In order to update the email addresses that you have registered with Facebook you should go to your Facebook page on a computer, click your Facebook name (at the top, next to the Home button) and then click “update info” from your profile picture. Finally click “contact and basic info” from the menu bar on the left and from here you can edit your email addresses.

JAGUAR I-PACE VOTED MOST ANTICIPATED NEW CAR OF 2018

Jaguar’s first all-electric vehicle wins What Car? Reader Award for the most anticipated new car of 2018

The Jaguar I-PACE all-electric performance SUV has won the What Car? 2018 Reader Award, securing it the title of the most anticipated new car of 2018. What Car? readers chose Jaguar’s first all-electric model from a shortlist of 12 cars due to go on sale this year, including new models from Tesla, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The award was presented in London last night. I-PACE combines a supercar silhouette with sports car performance and five-seater versatility. Jaguar’s designers and engineers have used the new electric vehicle architecture to tear up the rule book on usability. I-PACE occupies less road space than conventional mid-size SUVs, yet offers more room for passengers and luggage than models in the segment above. Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design, said: “The I-PACE is a radical departure for electric vehicles. It’s the product of authentic Jaguar design DNA matched with the most advanced electrification technology and British craftsmanship. Winning this award

endorses our decision of dramatic, future-facing design and is a great testament of customer reactions to our first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle.” Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, said: “Ever since the reveal of the Jaguar I-PACE Concept in late 2016 we’ve seen it garner a huge amount of interest from our readership. SUV sales show no signs of slowing down, and zero emissions vehicles are only set to get more and more popular, so the I-PACE is entering the market at exactly the right time. It certainly won’t be the only all-electric SUV going on sale in 2018, but as our Reader Award proves, it’s the one that most of our audience is excited about seeing.” The I-PACE will be the newest member of Jaguar’s ‘PACE’ family of SUVs, joining the FPACE and recently launched E-PACE. The F-PACE has won more than 70 major global awards, and became the fastest-selling Jaguar ever, selling more than 100,000 since it went on sale in April 2016. The Jaguar E-PACE compact performance SUV is also available to order now.

RENAULT ZOE NAMED ‘BEST ELECTRIC CAR UP TO £20,000’

The all-electric Renault ZOE has added to its growing awards tally having been recognised for the fifth consecutive year by What Car? judges. The ZOE Q90 Z.E.40 Dynamique Nav was named ‘Best Electric Car for less than £20,000’ at the What Car? Awards 2018. The Renault ZOE, fitted with the Z.E.40 battery which was released last year, can now store almost twice as much energy than before , delivering up to 250-mile range (NEDC) whilst retaining fast charging times at an accessible price. Commenting on the decision to award the ZOE for a fifth consecutive year, Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car? said: “The latest Renault ZOE impressed our judges because it represents a significant step towards overcoming ‘range anxiety’. The only other electric cars in the UK that are capable

of travelling up to 250 miles between charges come from Tesla. But while the trendy Californian firm’s Model S costs from £64,000, our favoured ZOE can be yours for £18,595. And Renault has kept everything that was already great about the ZOE: its practicality, tidy handling and standard kit. Plus, while range is up dramatically, price isn’t. And to include many of the latest comfort and infotainment features as well as fast charging at this price makes the ZOE a truly brilliant all-rounder.” “Dynamique Nav trim is your best bet. It gets 16-inch alloys, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto lights and wipers and a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Bluetooth, sat-nav and a DAB radio. Our favoured Quick Charge (Q90) car can be charged to 80% in just 65 minutes on a 43kW fast charge,” added Huntingford.

LEGENDARY F1 WORLD CHAMPIONS HONOURED AT SILVERSTONE CLASSIC The four record-breaking Formula Junior races at this summer’s Silverstone Classic (20-22 July) will be dedicated to a quartet of legendary F1 World Champions – Jim Clark OBE, John Surtees CBE, Denny Hulme OBE and Jochen Rindt – all of whom cut their competitive teeth racing these mini grand prix cars back in the late fifties and early sixties. The special Silverstone showdowns will be the climax to an amazing three-year Formula Junior World Tour celebrating the globally popular category’s 60th anniversary. The brainchild of Italian Count ‘Johnny’ Lurani, Formula Junior was introduced in 1958 as an affordable stepping-stone for young drivers with their sights set on reaching Formula 1. The concept of a small, single-seater chassis powered by a 1.0 or 1.1-litre production engine became an instant hit, with hundreds and hundreds of cars competing all over the planet. At first, these were typically front-engined, space-frame machines but, shadowing the evolution of F1 design, they quickly progressed to stiffer monocoque designs with engines mounted behind the driver. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Formula Junior, a massive World Tour kicked off in South Africa in January 2016. Since then, anniversary races have been staged in New Zealand, Australia, North America and throughout Europe with visits to many famous circuits such as Pau, Monza, Spa, Indianapolis, Mosport, MidOhio, Watkins Glen and Zandvoort.

Now, after more than 100 races across four continents, the incredible World Tour will reach its thrilling conclusion at the Silverstone Classic with a hitherto unprecedented turn-out. More than a record 120+ entries are expected, so grids have been split into front- and rear-engined categories, with individual races for both groupings on Saturday and Sunday. The two front-engined races are being dedicated to Clark and Surtees, who both started their careers in the earlier era (albeit driving a rear-engined Cooper in Surtees’ case), while the races for later rear-engined cars will honour Hulme - the Kiwi who was Formula Junior Champion in 1963 – and Austrian hero, Rindt. Clark was twice F1 World Champion – first in 1963 and then 1965 – Surtees took the title in 1964, Hulme in 1967 and Rindt, posthumously, in 1970. “To have two double-headers at Silverstone as the culmination of the World Tour is just unbelievable,” enthused Duncan Rabagliati, Chairman of the Formula Junior Historic Racing Association, the brains and energy behind the international Diamond Jubilee celebrations. “We are hugely grateful to have been given this wonderful opportunity and we will come up with the goods! We are going to have four fantastic races with absolutely full grids and some notable period drivers like Richard Attwood and our intrepid patron Howard Ganley in attendance as part of the celebrationst.” early bird tickets start at £37. SEAT TRUE FLEET SALES UP 50% IN 2017 SEAT UK recorded its best ever fleet and true fleet sales results in 2017 while cementing its position as the fastest growing manufacturer in the top 20. The Spanish brand’s improvement translates to increases of a third (33.7%) in overall fleet, despite the market declining by 4.5%, and a whopping 49.4% in true fleet. Its 2017 results were achieved despite a managed 23.7% reduction in rental units, a short-cycle channel which impacts residual values. The encouraging results arrive during a year in which SEAT has added to its product portfolio with the introduction of the all-new Arona crossover and the New Ibiza, building on the continued success of the highly acclaimed Ateca SUV. As well as offering new products which deliver quality, style and practicality, having a SEAT on fleet is cost-effective, with highly competitive total cost of ownership (TCO) statistics across the range. To help decision makers determine which vehicle to choose, the new fleet website now boasts a TCO comparator powered by cap. SEAT UK Head of Fleet & Business Sales, Peter McDonald, commented: “As a brand we’ve made big steps in recent years, bolstering our team of fleet professionals, refining the buying process and offering a range of models which are attracting rave reviews while meeting the needs of fleet managers and drivers alike. “Last year was extremely challenging from an industry perspective; considering that environment our performance is something we are especially proud of and we hope to continue to provide products and service levels which exceed the expectations of fleets.” Order books for the new Arona are now open following its official UK launch in December. Baby brother to the hugely successful Ateca, it recently received outstanding TCO forecasts – rated from just 51.13p per mile over its lifetime in 1.0 TSI 95PS form – from data specialist, cap. SEAT is the only company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets cars in Spain. A member of the Volkswagen Group, the multinational has its headquarters in Martorell (Barcelona), exporting 81% of its vehicles, and is present in over 80 countries through a network of 1,700 dealerships. In 2016, SEAT obtained an operating profit of 143 million euros, the highest in the history of the brand, and achieved worldwide sales of nearly 410,000 vehicles. SEAT Group employs more than 14,500 professionals at its three production centres – Barcelona, El Prat de Llobregat and Martorell, where it manufactures the highly successful Ibiza, Leon and now Arona. Additionally, the company produces the Ateca and the Toledo in the Czech Republic, the Alhambra in Portugal and the Mii in Slovakia. The multinational has a Technical Centre, which operates as a knowledge hub that brings together 1,000 engineers who are focussed on developing innovation for Spain’s largest industrial investor in R&D. SEAT already features the latest connectivity technology in its vehicle range and is currently engaged in the company’s global digitalisation process to promote the mobility of the future.

Spaniards On Top

Spain’s Jon Rahm (pictured) survived four playoff holes to capture the CareerBuilder Challenge in southern California on Sunday, on a day of double Spanish success, as Sergio Garcia triumphed in Singapore. Rahm shot a five-under-par 67 to post a combined 22-under and force extra holes with American Andrew Landry, who fired a final round 68. Rahm birdied the par-4 18th hole, the fourth of the playoff, to seal the win. The 23-year-old won the DP World Tour Championship in November and Sunday’s victory was his second on the PGA Tour. ”It’s hard to explain what this means right now,” Rahm told the Golf Channel. “I had a good feeling going into today. One of us had to do it and either one of us would’ve been a well deserved champion.” Rahm entered the tournament as the world’s number three but his victory push-

A Kenyan Double

Kenyan athletes dominated the 29th staging of the Santa Pola Half Marathon, as they won both the main races, meaning it was the fourth successive year that Kenya had done the double. Over four thousand competitors took part in the event, with numbers substantially down on last year, which saw seven thousand

athletes getting involved. Josphast Kiprono Menjo won the men’s race in a time of 1:04:29, followed well behind by Morocco’s Hassane Ahouchar who clocked a second-place time of 1:05:20. Kenya were victorious in the women's racem with Beth Mouthoni Karanja coming first over the line in 1:15:57.

es him past Jordan Spieth into second spot. Over in Singapore, Masters champion Sergio Garcia won the Singapore Open by five shots after carding a final-round three-under-par 68 on the Serapong course. Garcia, 38, birdied the first, seventh and eighth holes as the weather cleared after two days of rain-disrupted play to finish 14 under for the tournament. Japan's Satoshi Kodaira shared second place with South Africa's Shaun Norris. "It's always great to start with a win," said Garcia, who was playing in his first tournament of 2018. "Hopefully I can ride on this momentum. I'm extremely happy with how the week went," added Garcia "It was a tough day and a tough week, with the stopping and going."

Weekend Rugby

The senior ITV Vega Baja Orihuela Rugby team (pictured in yellow) began their second phase matches in the Murcia FERRMUR league last Saturday with a 59-21 defeat away to the University Rugby Club of Cartagena (CRUC). Orihuela were competitive in the first half, but folded late in the match as the CRUC team rolled over three tries in 10 minutes to

record a comprehensive victory. Orihuela will be at home tomorrow (Saturday) to CR Murcia XV, with a 5.00 pm kick-off, and whilst the Mar Menor Squalos have their first game of 2018 tomorrow as they entertain Lorca, with a 4.00 pm start at San Javier. The ITV Vega Baja Orihuela cadetes lost to CRUC last weekend by 47 points to 12.

Advantage Squandered

In –Form Thader

CD THADER 1 ORIHUELA B 0 VILLENA CF 2 CD TORREVIEJA 2 Torrevieja threw away a two-nil lead at Villena as their slide continues down the Preferente Group Four table, but in a tight group, they are just two points off a play-off slot in eighth position. It looked good for Torry, minus the suspended Marwane, as Manu Amores put them ahead in the 17th minute, and just 12 minutes later Juanpe had the visitors two-nil in front. As thoughts

were turning towards the interval, a defensive lapse saw Sergio pull one back for Villena at an important psychological moment, and so it was game on. The home side in truth looked strong towards the end of the first period, and they came roaring out of the blocks after the break, and deservedly bagged the equaliser with an excellent strike from the dangerous Raúl in the 62nd minute.

Torry and Villena went for the winner, but it ended in a draw, and a feeling for the visitors that it was two points dropped, as opposed to a point gained. Torrevieja now have a tricky trip to the Alicante University this Saturday afternoon, with a 4.30 pm kick-off. The students are just two points ahead of Torry, and so a draw would be seen as a good result for them.

CD Thader were not left to count the cost after Rubén Sanz missed an ninth minute penalty, with a second-half spot-kick converted by the same player on the hour mark making amends, and securing the well deserved Rojales-based side all three points. Thader had many chances to score in this

clash that they dominated, but went in at half-time with nothing to show for their efforts. They went up an extra gear in the second half, but could not add to the 61st minute Sanz penalty, with Orihuela trying to hard for a leveller, but in vain. The start to 2018 has been excellent for Thader

and they are right in the big mix for getting a play-off spot two seasons on the trot, as they lie in sixth place in the Preferente Group Four table, and a single point off the play-off positions. They have a perfect chance to get their four win of the year with a trip this weekend to second-bottom Monforte CF.

Disappointing Monte

SANTA POLA CF 3 CD MONTESINOS 1

More Almoradi Woe

ALICANTE UNIVERSITY 3 CD ALMORADI 1 Almoradi are just above the Preferente Group Four relegation zone after losing at Alicante on Saturday, though Confi gave them an early lead in the 11th minute. In fact Almoradi were good value for that lead and looked comfortable until they conceded a penalty in the

36th minute, converted by Romero. Two goals midway through the second half from Brice and Romero killed off the match, after Alicante looked the better side for most of the second period. The students will certainly pose some questions for

Torrevieja tomorrow (see left column), whilst Almoradi, still without a permanent coach following Coco’s departure, have a relegation battle on their hands. They entertain play-off contenders UD Ilicitana this Sunday morning with an 11.30 am kick-off.

Monte’s (pictured in their away blue kit) indifferent start to 2018 continued in Valencia Primera Regional Group Eight last Saturday, with Santa Pola dominating the early exchanges and they were unlucky not to score early on. The Montesinos defence looked poor once again and the midfield offered little in the way of cover for them. Santa Pola opened the scoring after 23 minutes when Miguel, unmarked in the heart of the Monte defence, headed home from a corner. This appeared to wake up the visitors and they were unfortunate not to equalise when a Pastor free-

kick was saved by home keeper Ricky. The biggest talking point of the first half was a clear cut penalty when Montesinos top scorer Vaz was clean through and brought down inside the area just as he was about to strike the ball. The referee, in his wisdom, waved the penalty appeals away and that was that! The second half went the same way as the first, although Montesinos were now pushing hard for an equaliser. But their sloppy defence once again fell asleep and it was Santa Pola who doubled their advantage through Jony in

the 67th minute. Monte boss Carlos Perez rang the changes with Maccan, Dario and new signing Patri (secured from CD Torrevieja) all coming on and it was Maccan who pulled a goal back four minutes later Monte sniffed a leveller, but in the 73rd minute, Santa Pola took advantage of a poor pass in the middle of the pitch to break away for Siguenza to make it 3-1, and to earn his team a deserved win. They are now eighth in the table with 24 points on the board, and entertain fourth-placed Catral this Sunday afternoon.

REAL MADRID 7 DEPORTIVO LA CORUNA 1 REAL BETIS 0 BARCELONA 5 Javier Mascherano has joined Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune after eight years at Barcelona. The 33-year-old joined Barca from Liverpool in 2010 for £17m after spells at West Ham, Corinthians and River Plate, and will leave officially today (Friday). The Argentina international won 18 trophies at the club, including four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues. Former Manchester City and Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini has been in charge of Hebei China Fortune since August 2016. The ex-Real Madrid boss guided his side to fourth in China's top tier last season. Mascherano's international team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi is also at the club, having joined from Paris St-Germain last year. Mascherano played 334 times for Barcelona, scoring one goal - from the penalty spot in 2016-17. Only three foreign players have played more games for Barca - Lionel Messi, Phillip Cocu and Dani Alves.

Cristiano Ronaldo was left with a nasty looking bruise after suffering a head injury in Sunday’s thrashing of Deportivo La Coruna. Ronaldo was bloodied as he walked off the field, but was well enough to check his injury out on the club doctor's mobile phone. He returned to training (pictured above) on Tuesday. The Portugal international suffered the knock after stooping to head home from Lucas Vazquez's cross from the edge of the six-yard box in the La Liga champions victory. Zinedine Zidane's side had not won in their last three league games and Adrian Lopez's shock opener (23) heightened the tension at the Bernabeu on Sunday, but Nacho equalised (32) before Bale struck either side of half-time to put Real in command. Luka Modric curled in a fine fourth (68) and Ronaldo struck twice (78, 84) before Nacho scored a late seventh (89) to lift Real above Villarreal and into fourth but still 19 points behind leaders Barcelona. Real have a tough test in front of them tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) with a 4.15 pm kick-off at third-placed Valencia.

ELCHE 5 DEPORTIVO ARAGON 1 Elche recorded back to back league wins in last Sunday’s demolition job of the Segunda Division B bottom club, which put the Ilicitanos up to third in the table, and has given some much needed breathing space for underfire coach Josico. The visitors showed why they are propping up the table and were simply awful, but having said that, they needed to be dealt with, and Elche duly obliged and could have scored more goals. Benja got an early sixth minute strike and got a second shortly before the interval. With 50 minutes gone, it was all over as Gonzalo Verdú got the third and then Lolo Plá (66 minutes) and Nino in the 70th minute (coming on again as a substitute) sealed up the three points. Rai got a late consolation for Aragon, but at last there is something for the Ilicitanos supporters to smile about, with the knowledge that their side are away to third-bottom CF Peralada this Sunday lunchtime.

A Real Shocker Mascherano Moves

Third Division News REAL MADRID 1 LEGANES 2 (AGG 2-2)

Javier Mascherano has joined Chinese Super League club Hebei China Fortune after eight years at Barcelona. The 33-year-old joined Barca from Liverpool in 2010 for £17m after spells at West Ham, Corinthians and River Plate, and will leave officially today(Friday).

Real Madrid's poor domestic season hit a new low as they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey on the away goals rule after losing to Leganes at the Bernabeu. The European champions led 1-0 from the quarter-final first leg. Javier Eraso levelled the scores on aggregate before Karim Benzema restored Real's aggregate lead. Brazilian midfielder Gabriel hit Leganes' winner as the visitors advanced to the semi-finals on the away goals rule. Real were without both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale for the game against their near neighbours, who were playing in the third tier of Spanish football four years ago. Yet Zinedine Zidane's side still included established players including defender Sergio Ramos, midfielder Isco and striker Benzema. The Real boss is expected to come under renewed pressure after yet another defeat.

Orihuela’s defence held well as they hung to a one-nil victory on Sunday at Silla CF, with the single goal coming shortly before half time from José Carlos. The Valencian regional third division second-place side were hard by a second half Silla onslaught, but bagged three precious points to keep them just a point behind leaders Levante, who picked up their expected two-nil win over regular strugglers Bunol. Crucially Orihuela have a ten point cushion between them and fifth-placed Eldense in terms of getting into the play-offs, and now entertain sixth-placed CD Olimpic, as they look to maintain their winning record so far in 2018. Mid-table Crevillente picked up a one-nil win at Rayo Ibense, and they are at home to Eldense on Sunday, whilst Elche Ilicitano remain just out of the relegation area after their oneone draw at Torre Levante. Elche now play Paiporta, who are just two places above them in the table.

Here’s Harry

Spanish sports website Don Balon says that Real Madrid are prepared to offer over 400 million euros to sign England international Harry Kane from Tottenham. According to the reports, the potential deal could only take place next summer, as the Spurs are not willing to part with their top player during the Premier League season. After disappointing performances from Karim Benzema and Borja Mayoral, the president of Los Blancos, Florentino Perez is determined to bolster Real’s attacking rank with a top-class striker, with Harry Kane has been named as his primary target. Kane is considered as one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe following his stunning performances in white shirt over the last couple of years. On the other hand, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has already announced he will do everything in his power to prevent the 24-year-old forward leave Tottenham. It has been said that Spurs owner Daniel Levy is willing to offer Kane a significant pay raise to keep him in North London, but the England international seems tempted according to reports to move to the La Liga champions.

Spanish Dates

England and Spain have been drawn together along with Croatia in the inaugural Uefa Nations League. They have been placed in Group Four in League A, which features Europe’s top teams. Gareth Southgate’s side will play the two sides home and away in the Autumn with a possible shot at winning the Nations League trophy in the summer of 2019. The new tournament, designed to heighten interest in stagnant international friendlies, involves all 55 Uefa sides. The European countries have been split into four leagues based on UEFA rankings with the possibility of promotion and relegation between the leagues. Ryan Giggs’ Wales take on Republic of Ireland and Denmark. Scotland face Israel and Albania while Northern Ireland will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria. The standout group in League A – which is comprised of the 12 best sides in Europe – sees France, Netherlands and Germany playing each other. The exact dates of the games will be announced by Uefa in due course, but it’s known the games will be played during the following international breaks. The four sides in League A who win their respective groups will go through to the Nations League Finals, which will be played 5–9 June 2019. That mini-tournament will feature two semi-finals and then a final and third-place game. It’ll be hosted by one of the nations competing. Based on previous experience, there’s every chance that England’s away match to Spain might be played in Alicante to boost the gates and take advantage of the large British expat community on the Costa Blanca.

Rafa Timetable

World number one Rafael Nadal faces three weeks out after being diagnosed with a torn inner hip muscle during his Australian Open quarter-final defeat, his management said on Wednesday. The 16-time Grand Slam champion had a scan in a Melbourne hospital after he retired early in the fifth set of his match with Croatia's Marin Cilic on Tuesday. "The MRI (scan) showed a grade one injury of his illiopsoas on his right leg," his management said in a statement. "He will be resting over the next few days in Spain and will start with anti-inflammatory physiotherapy. "He will start his rehabilitation and pre-adaptation process to the tennis court in two weeks, starting progressively his training and practice." The Nadal team said the Spanish star was expected to be fully recovered in three weeks and could resume playing in Acapulco late next month. "Three weeks is the normal time to totally recover and he will resume his tennis schedule as planned, playing Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami," the statement said. The Spaniard was forced to withdraw when trailing Marin Cilic 0-2 in the fifth set and called on tour organisers to do more to halt injuries to top players.

Marbella Date

In-form Kyle Edmund is among five players named in Great Britain's Davis Cup squad for next week's World Group match against Spain in Marbella. The British number two is joined by Cameron Norrie, Liam Broady, Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot for the contest which runs between February 2nd and 4th. "With it being played on their favoured clay surface it's going to be an incredibly tough first round," said GB captain Leon Smith. "That being said, our team bring form into the tie and have nothing to lose." Britain won the Davis Cup in 2015 and last played Spain in the event in 1986, when GB won the tie in Telford. This time around the contest will be in Marbella and the winners of the tie will face either Australia or Germany in the quarter-finals in April. If Britain lose against Spain, they will face a play-off in September to stay in the World Group.

NEW DEAL MAVERICK

FA CUP SHOWDOWNS Maverick Vinales has been rewarded by Yamaha for a promising first season with a two year contract extension. The Spanish rider moved to the Japanese manufacturer last season from Suzuki and won three races on his way to third in the 2017 MotoGP title race won by fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez. Yamaha managing director Lin Jarvis described Vinales "as a real asset".

KYLE OUT

Briton Kyle Edmund's brilliant Australian Open run came to an end yesterday with a straight-set defeat by Croatia's sixth seed Marin Cilic in the semi-finals. Cilic won 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to reach his first Melbourne final, where he will face Roger Federer or Hyeon Chung, who are scheduled to meet this Friday morning. Edmund, 23, had been trying to become just the fourth British man to reach a Grand Slam final since tennis turned professional in 1968. His ranking is set to rise from 49th in the world to around 25th next week.

Alexis Sanchez could make his Manchester United debut tonight (8.55 pm kick-off, live on BBC 1) with Yeovil Town having home advantage in the battle for a place in the FA Cup fifth round. The forward left Arsenal on Monday to become the highestpaid player in Premier League history, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan went the other way. Both sides recorded 2-0 victories at home in the last round; Jose Mourinho’s men beating Premier League hopefuls Derby County as Yeovil downed League One's Bradford City. Other tasty ties include West Brom facing Liverpool in the FA Cup this Saturday evening, with the Baggies looking to become the first team to win at Anfield this season. Jurgen Klopp is expected to make changes to the side that suffered a surprise 1-0 Premier League defeat at Swansea on Monday, which ended Liverpool's18-game unbeaten run

across all competitions. Giant-killers Newport County are rewarded for their thirdround exploits with the visit of Premier League giants Tottenham (Saturday, 6.30 pm kick-off) Leeds United were downed by Shawn McCoulsky's 89thminute winner as the Welsh club, who play in League Two, reached the fourth round of the first time in 41 years. League Two promotion contenders Peterborough United entertain Leicester City on Saturday lunchtime, whilst improving Championship side Middlesbrough under Tony Pulis will fancy their chances tomorrow afternoon against Premier League Brighton. Watch out for League Two promotion hopefuls Notts County at home tomorrow to Premier strugglers Swansea. Sunday sees the all-Premier clash between Chelsea and Newcastle whilst Cardiff City will try their hand against Manchester City.

HEAD ON THE BLOCK

Zinedine Zidane says he is enduring his "worst moment" as Real Madrid coach and his future at the club rests on their progress in the Champions League. Zidane's Real have won back-to-back European titles, but are 19 points adrift of La Liga leaders Barcelona and were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Leganes on Wednesday at the Bernabeu (report on page 46). Real, who finished second in the group to Tottenham, face Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last-16. "It's a fiasco," said the Frenchman. "My worst moment as a coach. I don't regret anything I did in the game, though. I take responsibility for what I do." The European champions led 1-0 from the quarter-final

first leg, but lost 2-1 at home to go out on away goals. "To start this tie in the manner we did it's really bad," added Zidane. "For that I'm angry. I don't understand what's going on." Zidane has won eight major trophies since he took charge in January 2016, with Real enjoying a record 40-game unbeaten run in all competitions last season. However, when asked if his future at the club depended on the Champions League tie with the French league leaders on 14 February, the 45-year-old said: "Yes, that's clear. "I'm responsible for this, I'm the boss. I have to find the solutions. We've found some of them but not consistently enough. I need to take responsibility and I'll always fight."
