Child Killer Confesses

woman caught in Almeria province with the body of her eight-year-old stepson in her car boot last Sunday, has admitted to killing him. Ana Julia Quezada, a Dominican woman who was in a relationship with Gabriel Cruz's father, claimed that Gabriel got in her car with her so that they could go and “paint the house” on a family estate, where Quezada and her partner, the boy’s father, Ángel Cruz, were renovating a property. Once there, she claims that the youngster got angry with her and attacked her with a hatchet. She told investigators that she then hit the boy with the blunt part of the tool, leaving him unconscious. In a state of panic, she then strangled him with her hands, stripping him of his clothes and burying the body. Gabriel’s parents, Patricia Ramirez and Angel Cruz, who are separated, gave a number of emotional interviews since he went missing after leaving his grandmother's house to go out to play. Gabriel went missing on February 27th, and after a

Property ID: 592 - 495,000€ missing person's alert went viral, a search involving over 4,000 police and volunteers was launched. On Monday, investigators took Ms Quezada to key locations in their inquiry. She is alleged to have hidden the boy's body at a family property in the village of Rodalquilar, but was caught by the Guardia Civil trying to move it elsewhere. In video footage of her arrest, she is heard to shout: "It wasn't me! I collected the car this morning!" Meanwhile, the Guardia are reportedly reviewing the previous case of a child who died in her care. In 1996, a four-year-old girl fell out of the window in

the northern city of Burgos, where she was with Ms Quezada, who is originally from the Dominican Republic. The death was ruled accidental at the time. Gabriel was last seen leaving his grandmother's house in the village of Las Hortichuelas, next to Rodalquilar, in the municipality of Níjar. He was supposed to go over to a neighbour's for a playdate, but he never returned. On March 3rd, the boy's father Angel Cruz and Ms Quezada found a T-shirt with his DNA 10 kilometres from Níjar. Media reports said that the police have been monitoring Ms Quezada since

then. She had been a fixture at rallies attended by thousands of supporters. An image of a blue fish inspired by Gabriel's love of the sea - was shared on social media with the hashtag #TodosSomosGabriel, meaning "we are all Gabriel". Gabriel's funeral on Tuesday at the cathedral in Almeria near Las Hortichuelas drew a huge crowd, with people shouting "we are all Gabriel". Speaking to the media, Mr Cruz gave thanks for all the support received during the days of uncertainty. "You gave us strength to search for Gabriel," he said.

ix people were arrested at Alicante-Elche airport as part of a massive nationwide operation to bring down a gang that would send Chinese nationals to the United Kingdom or Ireland at a flat rate of 20 thousand euros per head. The National Police detained 155 people during their operation, which

included the four ring-leaders in Barcelona, after a three-year investigation. There has been no indication of how many people made it to the British Isles through their illegal endeavours. The gang would look after Chinese people in the Barcelona area once they had arrived ...Cont. pg 2

Work has begun on converting Orihuela’s derelict bull ring into a multi-purpose entertainment venue catering for up to 2,800 people. The 400,000-euro project was described by Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana as “historic” after over three decades of the site not being

used. The structural aspects of the arena would be preserved, in addition to creating a play area for children; a cafeteria; and new toilet facilities. The new-look venue should be completed by October.

San Fulgencio council’s controversial awarding of a 16-million-euro garbage collection contract has been backed by the central contractual court operated by the Ministry of Finance in Madrid. They stated that there was no case to answer in every stage of the process, and the award to UTE Entorno Urbano y Medio Ambiente-Acciona stands. The 22-year contract was voted on by the council before Christmas, with two opposition parties and an unsuccessful tender bidder, taking the matter to the contractual court over allegations of proper procedures not being followed in the tender process. San Fulgencio mayor Carlos Ramírez said at the time that “everything was done legally”, and the court’s decision had given him added strength to con-

tinue in his position. Ramirez was sentenced in the autumn to eight years of disqualification from public office for prevarication, but is in the process of making an appeal. He quit the Partido Popular and five of his PP colleagues were thrown out of the party, but they continue to rule San Fulgencio with a majority along with a UPyD councillor. The mayor told the Informacion newspaper that the main opposition parties, the PSOE and PIPN who

Authorities started getting suspicious back in 2015 after a considerable rise in the number of Chinese citizens who were trying to fly to the UK from Barcelona airport with false documents, which were all produced by the same forger. The subsequent investigations opened up an international network which looked for people in China desperate for a new life in the British Isles, with the promise of new passports, and help from gang members to “cross borders”. The documents were actually produced in China, and were sent on a weekly basis

via courier and parcel companies, with the gang buying tickets from low-cost airlines on the day that their customers were planning to travel, in order make life difficult for the Spanish authorities to track them down. Gang members would accompany their clients to minimise any chance of arousing any interest from airport passport controls or other check points, and they would even be given cards (pictured) with common English phrases that they would use if they were stopped and questioned. Over 100 arrests were made in Barcelona, with two major house searches uncovering computer equipment, cash, fake documents, and two hand-made stamps that were used to verify entry for visitors to the EU Schengen travel area.

Spain's government says it will work to raise state pension payouts but warned that its priority will be ensuring the future of the nation's retirement system. Experts have raised concerns about the sustainability of payouts in an aging Spain, with fewer workers contributing to the national social security fund. Addressing a special parliamentary debate on Wednesday in the wake of recent retirees' protests, Prime Minister Mariano

Rajoy (pictured in the debate) said that "there is no reason for anxiety." Unions have called for fresh demonstrations tomorrow (Saturday), demanding pension hikes in line with inflation. Pensioners, backed by Rajoy's political opponents, say that a 0.25 percent increase in 2017 has not been enough. The government says 139 billion euro were paid last year in state pensions, 29 percent of total public expenditure.

There is no corruption here”, added Ramirez. “The more the opposition tells me to resign, the more determined I am to stay”.

Flying Figures February saw yet another rise in passenger numbers at Alicante-Elche airport, according to operator AENA, with UK nationals fuelling the latest rise. Nearly 712 thousand people passed through the facility last month, with over 280 thousand being British, followed by Dutch nationals at over 52 thousand. Despite big user rises at the airport in the last few years, the first two months of the year have still produced a three point three per cent increase of passenger numbers compared to 2017, with one point four million passengers have travelled via Alicante-Elche. San Javier airport recorded the best February figures since 2010, with just over 44 thousand people coming through, a rise of over 18 % compared to a year earlier, with the first two months of 2018 logging nearly 90 thousand passengers.

Mercadona Boost

Valencia region-based supermarket chain Mercadona says that it will invest eight point five billion euro in the next six years on refurbishing stores in an ever-competitive Spanish market. Mercadona, which has become Spain’s biggest supermarket chain and one of the country’s biggest employers, with around 84,000 staff, intends to invest a record one point five billion euro this year, when it plans to open 11 new stores. Founded nearly 40 years ago in the Valencia region, the company also said it would increase spending on its digital transformation in order to become more efficient and boost its online sales.

“We are firmly committed towards investing to transform Mercadona. Therefore, more than eight point five billion euro are expected to be invested from equity capital between 2018 and 2023,” Chairman Juan Roig said. Unlike rivals DIA and Carrefour, the chain has shunned acquisitions, preferring to grow organically. It has a market share of nearly a quarter of Spain’s food retail market, more than 15% above DIA and Carrefour. The company reported a 2017 annual profit of 322 million euro, 49% lower year on year, while capital investment was 47 percent higher at a billion euro, it said in a statement.

Brit Fugitive Caught

A British fugitive on the run in Spain who is said to be facing a life sentence in the UK for five rapes on two women, has been arrested in the Murcia region by the National Police. Agents said they had tracked him down to a van he was living in based in the Los Baños de Fortuna area, after he used a fake identity to contact relatives on social media. The National Police said one of his victims was a 15year-old girl and the other was a woman raped four times. Both were attacked in the 1980s. British authorities told European police forces he

was a wanted man back in 2016 and officers in Spain were tipped off the he was living somewhere along the eastern Mediterranean coast in July last year. A spokesman for the National Police in Alicante said: - 'He raped two women in the Eighties, one of them on four occasions. The British authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant against the fugitive for committing five rapes.’ 'One of the victims had just turned 15 when she was targeted.’ 'He committed the sex attacks between 1980 and 1983 and faces life imprisonment in the UK.' Revealing how they

tracked him down with help from Britain's National Crime Agency, the National Police added: 'The detainee used a false identity to contact his relatives in the UK. That enabled investigators to follow his digital trail until they tracked down where he was hiding.’ 'Investigators determined he was a person who moved about in a van he lived in, which made finding him more difficult as he didn't leave any physical trace of his movements. 'After nine months of investigation, the van he used as a home was tracked down and the rapist arrested after a watch was put on the vehicle.'

Paddy’s Parade

Three Moroccan men were injured early on Sunday when their car came off a San Javier area road, with the driver testing positive for alcohol and cocaine. The trio, aged in their

twenties, were travelling just after 6.00 am on the RMF35 close to La Roda Golf, when the driver lost control and the car. San Javier local police were the first people on the

scene, with a front-seat passenger having to be released by firefighters. He was unconscious, and was taken to Los Arcos hospital with brain trauma injuries.

Cabo Roig turns green tomorrow (Saturday) with the annual St.Patrick’s Day parade, which after Dublin’s celebrations, is the biggest St.Patrick’s Day commemoration in Europe. The parade will get underway shortly after 2.00 pm, lead off by a procession of classic cars and motorbikes, prior to the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums and St. Patrick himself leading off the floats. They will be joined by a special guest, namely the ex-Irish prime minister, Brian Cowen, who was in office between 2008 and 2011. There will be floats from many local bars and business, dance schools, local

clubs and associations, all providing entertainment for

the spectators along the entire Cabo Roig strip.

Simple Pro Floor Care

Mike Butler has been refurbishing and polishing marble, terrazzo and other stone floors in Spain since 2008 and there's not much he doesn't know about getting your floors, worktops/stairs and marble furniture back to their original splendour. Marble floors can loose their glossy shine through using the wrong cleaning products, simple lack of care or just plain old wear and tear; whatever the reason, Mikes crystallising system and high speed polish can give your floors that beautiful mirror like shine that you would expect to see from this natural product. Stone floors, stairs etc, can easily be etched into by acid cleaning products or even food and drink that may have an acid content like wine, lemon or vinegar. This can be fixed with grinding the etched mark out, then bringing the area back to a full shine with progressively higher grades of grinding pads and you would never know the floor had been damaged. Marble and other stone floors can be easily also be chipped or on occasions chunks of marble can be displaced, but unlike ceramic tiles, can be easily repaired with an epoxy resin. Mike uses a special marble repair resin with hardener added, that once applied, allowed to set (rock hard) and then ground flat, leaves the area with little or no sign of the original chip, vein or fault. If you would like a quote with a free demonstration or just a chat with an expert, please call mike on 691 649 515, or if you prefer, drop him an email on, simplyprofloorcare@hotmail.com

Almoradi’s road markings are getting a new coat of paint ahead of the spring, thanks to members of a local employment workshop. New pedestrian crossings

are set to be rolled out, like recently on Avenida de Algorfa, with Almoradi’s works and employment department directing the project.

Many of the painted signs have worn away over time, and the council has stressed the importance of replacing them to keep motorists and pedestrians safe.

Property Payments

A helping hand for young adults to help rent a home in Spain’s large cities, or subsidies to buy a property in rural areas that are losing population, are part of the the latest three-year State Housing Plan. Greater financial help will be available to those affected by eviction, or being threatened by it, and grants are being given to property developers building homes destined for renting. The Housing Plan has a strong focus on the under35s, since only a small percentage of adults in this age group are able to afford to move out of their parents' home.

The household income for the tenants in question must be less than a gross €22,558 per annum, rising to €30,078 annually for families with three or more children, single parents of dependent children or households where at least one member is disabled. The under-35s will be entitled to 50% of their first €600 in rent if they live in Madrid, Barcelona or any of the other large metropolitan areas later included, plus a further 30% of the next €300, whilst these young adults who live outside of the cities in question will get 50% of their rent price on the first €600.

Under-35s living in rural areas at risk of desertion can claim up to 20% of the price of the property they hope to buy, to a maximum of €10,800, and provided the house or flat is not on the market for more than €100,000. This assistance is available to those living in villages of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants and with a household income of less than a gross €22,558 per annum. The plan suggests that it will be up to regional governments, like those in Valencia and Murcia, to carry out means testing to see who would qualify for the aid.

Fresh Protest

The latest demonstration in Catalunya saw tens of thousands of people marching in Barcelona on Sunday to demand the formation of a new government in the region, and fresh call for independence. Some 45 thousand people joined the "Republic Now" march called by the influential pro-independence citizens' group ANC, city police said. "There are more than two million of us citizens of Catalonia who want to go forward now, clearly, towards the Catalan republic," ANC vice president Agusti Alcoberro told reporters.

Separatist parties won an absolute majority of seats in the 135-seat Catalan parliament in a snap election on December 21st but have so far failed to form a new government. Catalunya's two main separatist parties last week proposed a new referendum on a constitution of the "Catalan republic". The agreement between Together for Catalunya led by deposed and self-exiled regional president Carles Puigdemont and the leftist ERC still needs to be ratified by the small far-left separatist CUP party. The region of 7.5 million people has been under

direct rule from Madrid since Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dissolved the Catalan parliament last October following an independence referendum not recognised by Madrid. Debate on the appointment of a new regional president had been set for last Monday but was postponed indefinitely because the sole candidate, former ANC president Jordi Sanchez, is in jail on sedition charges along with three other separatist leaders. Puigdemont, who went into self-exile in Belgium, has ruled out his candidacy because of the legal obstacles.

TV Close Down

A gang that illegally distributed tv channels through an internet decoder has been arrested by the National Police in northern Spain. The Police, along with their colleagues from Europol, detained the sixgang members, who pirated television feeds, and then sold them on via their decoder which illegally streamed films, tv series, and live sport. The company based in Galicia designed the internet

decoder and the application needed to access subscription channels, and was sold for 120 euro. The server that distributed the channels was based in France, with eight home raids staged in Spain, leading to the arrests and the seizure of over four and a half thousand decoding units. The inquiry was instigated at the request of a number of Spanish organisations including La Liga and football rights owner Mediapro.

Crowdfunding First

Spain’s first housing development financed entirely through crowdfunding is about to go up in Cantabria’s regional capital of Santander. A plot of 5,500 square metres has been earmarked for the urbanisation, which will involve an investment of around three million euros. It will house two apartment blocks of three storeys apiece, each with 17 flats, and 51 parking spaces, or an average of 1.5 off-road bays per property. City councillor for planning and infrastructure, César

Díaz, says crowdfunding is 'certainly a new thing' in the housing market but could provide a 'sustainable alternative' to the usual system of bank loans secured on the eventual properties. It will also help revive the housing market in the region's main metropolitan area, Díaz says. Santander city council has granted planning permission to the development company, SENOR, and has released the above photograph showing what the future urbanisation will look like.

Pervert Plea

An Alicante City hotel manager has pled guilty to planting a camera in a bathroom so that he could spy on two of his female employees and record intimate images of them. In a plea bargain deal, the unnamed snooper accepted an 18-month prison sentence, which means that as it was his first offence, he will avoid jail. Prosecutors in Alicante originally called for a sixyear prison term, but the offender has also been ordered to pay a total of nine thousand euros in compensation to his two victims.

The events date back to 2015 and took place over a four-week period, when in a scene straight out of a spy movie, the pervert used a tiny camera which was placed in a pen, which in turn was put into an umbrella that was put in the employees’ bathroom. Some 35 recordings were made, with the manager claiming two years ago when he was arrested that the camera was purely for security purposes. One of those recorded suffered anxiety disorders once the covert operation had been discovered.

Eroding Freedom

Amnesty International’s Spanish director, Esteban Beltrán (pictured) has warned that an “exponential increase” in prosecutions under a controversial Spanish anti-terrorism law is having a chilling effect on satire and dissent and is pushing social media users, musicians and journalists towards self-censorship. The charity is calling for the law to be repealed, arguing that recent high-profile cases brought under article 578 of Spain’s criminal code have highlighted the danger the legislation poses to freedom of speech and international human rights law. Under the article, those found guilty of “glorifying terrorism”, justifying terrorist acts or “humiliating the vic-

tims of terrorist crimes or their relatives” can be jailed, fined and banned from holding public sector jobs. Over the past two years, the legislation has been used with increasing frequency, with musicians (as recently reported in The Courier), being given prison sentences following prosecutions under article 578. In a report published on Tuesday – entitled Tweet … if you dare: how counter-terrorism laws restrict freedom of expression in Spain – Amnesty detects an “exponential increase” in the use of article 578. It says that while only three people were charged under the article in 2011, the figure rose to 39 in 2017, with almost 70 people con-

victed over the past two years. According to Amnesty, there is “increasing self-censorship and a broader chilling effect on freedom of expression” in Spain. “Sending rappers to jail for song lyrics and outlawing political satire demonstrates how narrow the boundaries of acceptable online speech have become in Spain,” said Esteban Beltrán, director of Amnesty International Spain. “People should not face criminal prosecution simply for saying, tweeting or singing something that might be distasteful or shocking. Spain’s broad and vaguely worded law is resulting in the silencing of free speech and the crushing of artistic expression.”

Vagrants Jailed

Three men have been jailed after admitting the manslaughter of a British man found dead on a bench outside Malaga Airport on the Costa del Sol, with ham on his buttocks and his genitals inside an empty tuna can. Police were told he had fallouts with other men sleeping rough at the airport because he was mean about sharing his food and drink. Irishman James O’Byrne, 59, from Cork, was one of

three men convicted of killing 51-year-old Steven Allford. Two Finns - Jussi Petteri Munck, 41, and Mika Tapio Soininem, 48, also confessed to the Londoner’s manslaughter after striking a plea bargain with prosecutors. Homeless Mr Allford was discovered lying face down on a bench outside Malaga Airport early on October 21 2016. He had been tied to a bench in a landscaped area near the arrivals lounge and

a busy train stop and his trousers had been pulled down round his ankles. Prosecutors were seeking jail sentences of three years for manslaughter for each of the three men. They were also seeking a further oneyear prison term on a charge of submitting Mr Allford to degrading treatment. The trio were handed prison sentences of two years for the first crime and six months for the second as part of the plea bargain deal.

Using "dog-speak" is important in building a bond between a dog and their owner, scientists from the University of York have found.

communication." During the tests, phrases such as "you're a good dog!" and "shall we go for a walk?", were used.

During a series of tests, dogs were spoken to in a highpitched voice and again in a normal adult voice.

Next, another person would talk to the animal in a normal voice about non-dog-related content, for example "I went to the cinema last night."

Researchers then monitored which speaker the dogs responded to and wanted to interact with. PhD student Alex Benjamin said it seemed dogs were more likely to favour the speaker who used a high pitch. The researchers wanted to test whether speaking to dogs in "dog-directed" speech was useful to the animals, or whether humans did this simply because they view pets in the same way as babies.

"Dog-directed" speech involves speaking in a high-pitched voice with exaggerated emotion - in a similar way that adults often talk to small children. Dr Katie Slocombe from the university's department of psychology explains: "This high-pitched rhythmic speech is common in human interactions with dogs in western cultures, but there isn't a great deal known about whether it benefits a dog. "We wanted to see whether social bonding between animals and humans was influenced by the type and content of the

The speakers then mixed "dog-directed" speech with nondog-related words, and normal speech with dog-related words. Researchers measured both the attentiveness of the dog while the speaker was talking, and whom the dog wanted to interact with once the speaker had finished. The scientists found dogs were more likely to want to spend time with the speaker who had used both "dog-directed" speech and dog-related content. When the different types of speech were mixed up dogs did not show a preference for either speaker. It led student Alex Benjamin to conclude: "This suggests that adult dogs need to hear dog-relevant words spoken in a high-pitched emotional voice in order to find it relevant." The researchers could start looking into whether puppies demonstrate similar preferences, however there are no plans to carry out the same tests with cats.

Franco’s Palace

An attempt is being made to appropriate dictator General Franco’s summer residence, which the A Coruña provincial council says that his heirs have no right to enjoy. The discovery last month that Franco's grandchildren had put the sturdy Pazo de Meirás palace up for sale in the north-western region of Galicia has led to politicians moving in to call for the fortified building and grounds open to the public. "It's a scandal that this property continues to be controlled by the dictator's family," says Néstor Rego, one of around 25 activists from the region who invaded the property for a few hours in protest last year. Now the leaders of the provincial authority of A

Coruña, to which the village of Meirás belongs, have announced a legal and political offensive aimed at stripping the Franco family of the dictator's summer home. "There are legal ways to recover the Pazo de Meirás for the public realm," said Goretti Sanmartín, deputy president of the A Coruña authority, as she presented a report drawn up by historical and legal experts on the mansion's status. She appealed for "a consensus between all political forces and all levels of government". The report probes the circumstances of the donation of the property to the then leader of rebellious Nationalist forces during Spain's 1936-39 civil war, and presents what it says is

evidence that the dictator fraudulently took legal ownership of the palace via a "simulated" purchase contract after the conflict ended. According to the Franco regime's official account, the donation of the Pazo de Meirás for the leader's use was a sacrifice borne of the Galician people's loyalty to the fascist general, who was born nearby in the port town of Ferrol. Local historians, however, say the leaders of A Coruña's council and business community essentially obliged local people to hand over a portion of their income and wealth to purchase the property, expand its grounds and furnish the palace to the standards of the country's military leader.

Protestors Backed The European Court of Human Rights has sided with two Spaniards who set fire in public to a photograph of Spain’s king and queen, saying their protest amounted to freedom of expression. The Strasbourg-based court ruled on Tuesday that the 2007 protest by Enric Taulats and Jaume Capellera during the visit of King Juan Carlos to Girona, in north-east Spain, was political, not personal, and involved a “permissible degree of provocation” to convey its message. They were initially sentenced in Spain to 15 months in prison for insulting the Crown, though that was later reduced to a fine. The pair took their case to

the European court after losing appeals in Spain against the conviction. The Spanish

Constitutional Court ruled their acts incited hatred and violence against the monarchy.

Unwelcome Winner A study of Barcelona’s wastewater reveals that the Catalan capital is Europe’s biggest weekday user of cocaine. Barcelona came top in a wastewater analysis study of 56 European cities in 19 countries undertaken by sewage analysis centre Score and the EU drugs agency in March 2017. The study tested daily wastewater samples in the catchment areas of treatment plants over a week, testing the wastewater of 43 million people for traces of four drugs: amphetamine, cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy) and methamphetamine (crystal meth). The results, released by the European

Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drugs Addiction (Emcdda), show that cocaine is used most in Barcelona on a daily basis, although Zurich in Switzerland beats it at the weekend.

Amazon Anger Over a thousand Amazon workers in Spain are planning to stage their first strike later this month, with a two-day walkout to protest over what unions claim are efforts to reduce employees’ rights. The strike, which has been called by Spain’s largest union, the CCOO together with other unions, will take place next Wednesday and Thursday, and involves the staff at Amazon’s San Fernando logistic warehouse on the outskirts of Madrid. The CCOO union claims the company

aims to block salary increases, cut wages and reduce payments for those working weekends or holidays.

Formentera Fire

Almoradi firefighters put out a blaze last Thursday that started in a storage/washing room at a property owned by a British couple in Formentera del Segura.

The fire was reported shortly after 6.00 pm at an address on Calle Benejúzar, with the owners out at the time. A neighbour called the authorites, with the external

room housing a washing machine and dryer that were burnt out. The fire crew prevented the blaze from spreading into the main body of the house.

Over The Edge A blustery weekend caused Torrevieja firefighters to be called in to deal with falling rubble at a city apartment block. Calle Almeida was cordoned off on Saturday as a ladder was used as part of the operation to stop any further material falling off the top of the building. No one was injured and the work was finished at around 3.30 pm.

Learner Mistake

Four students on a school trip in Almendralejo in Extremedura in western Spain were knocked over by a learner driver on Monday, whilst they were walking in a sqaure. A 17-year-old was reported to be in critical condition, whilst the other youngsters received hospital treatment, after being hit

by the Peugeot car. The accident, which took place around 12.45pm on Monday, was described by police as “a lapse in concentration by a learner driver”. The woman in question is thought to have “driven in the wrong lane, then onto the curb and ended up hitting a tree”.

Vitamin D may offer protection against cancers, study says Vitamin D may offer protection against cancers, new research suggests, although experts are split over whether individuals should start taking supplements. The vitamin plays an important role in the body, including in bone health and muscle strength and in preventing conditions such as rickets. It is produced when sunlight hits our skin, can also be found in certain foods such as eggs and fatty fish, and can be taken as a supplement. Now researchers in Japan say higher levels of the vitamin are linked to a lower risk of cancer, in particular liver cancer. “We believe vitamin D has a maybe weak, but beneficial effect across many cancers,” said Taiki Yamaji, coauthor of the study from the Center for Public Health Sciences at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo. It is not the first study to sug-

gest that people with low levels of vitamin D might be at increased risk of a number of cancers, but the evidence is far from clear, with some studies showing no such effect and others suggesting protective effects against particular cancers but not others. The latest study, published in the BMJ, sought to unpick the issue. The team looked at levels of the biologically active form of vitamin D in blood samples taken from more than 30,000 middleaged individuals at health centres across Japan during the early 1990s. The participants were followed up over a median of 16 years. The researchers based their analysis on data from 3,301 participants who developed cancer after signing up to the study and 4,044 randomly selected participants, 450 of whom developed cancer. After taking into account factors including age, sex,

smoking status and family history of cancer, as well as seasonal differences in circulating vitamin D, the team found that higher levels of circulating vitamin D are linked to a lower risk of cancer overall. Compared with the quartile of participants with the lowest levels of circulating vitamin D, the quartile with the highest levels had a 22% lower risk of cancer. The team say there was no difference in the effect of vitamin D based on sex. Looking at specific cancers,

the team found about a 50% lower risk of liver cancer, once diet was also considered, for the group with the highest vitamin D levels compared with the lowest. A weaker effect was found for premenopausal breast cancer but there was no clear link for other cancers, including lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer or breast cancer as a whole. The team found that the link to a lower total cancer risk was seen even when liver cancer was taken out of the

mix. That, said Yamaji, could be because smaller effects of vitamin D on other cancers might add up when they are considered together. However, the authors note that the study has limitations, including that levels of vitamin D were only taken at one point in time, that participants might have been more health-conscious than the general public and that the number of cases of rare cancers was small. Sophia Lowes from Cancer Research UK said: “Although this study suggests that higher vitamin D levels in the blood could mean lower cancer risk in Asian populations, overall the evidence for a possible link has been mixed.” Lowes added that it was not clear whether being deficient in vitamin D has a direct impact on cancer risk or just reflects poor health in general. “Enjoying the sun safely, while taking care not

to burn and increase skin cancer risk, should help most people get enough vitamin D in summer,” she said. Julia Newton-Bishop, professor of dermatology and vitamin D expert from the University of Leeds, said the study chimed with others that had found a protective effect from vitamin D against cancer deaths. Newton-Bishop said the latest study was consistent with findings from the scientific advisory committee on nutrition, which recommended that Britons should be taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D per day, given the variability in sunshine around the country and with seasons. Newton-Bishop added: “I suspect from this paper and from other papers that vitamin D does have an effect, but it is relatively modest and it is more about avoiding a low level than taking high levels.”

Sea swimming 'increases illness risk' Swimming in the sea substantially increases the chance of developing stomach bugs, ear aches and other illnesses, researchers have found. The University of Exeter Medical School and Centre

for Ecology and Hydrology carried out the study. It concluded, compared to non-sea swimmers, the likelihood of developing an earache increases by 77% and for a gastrointestinal illness rises by 29%.

As well as swimming, the risks also apply to water sports, such as surfing. Researchers reviewed 19 studies linking sea bathing to illness from the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and Norway. They

analysed results from more than 120,000 people. "In high-income countries like the UK, there is a perception that there is little risk to health of spending time in the sea," said Dr Anne Leonard. "However, our paper shows that spending time in the sea does increase the probability of developing illnesses, such as ear ailments and problems involving the digestive system, such as stomach ache and diarrhoea. "We think that this indicates that pollution is still an issue affecting swimmers in some of the world's richest countries." Research supervisor Dr Will Gaze said: "We don't want to deter people from going into the sea, which has many health benefits such as improving physical fitness, wellbeing and connecting with nature.

"However, it is important people are aware of the risks so they can make informed decisions." Dr Gaze said most people will recover from infections with no medical treatment but they can prove more serious for vulnerable people, such as the very old or

very young. He added: "We have come a long way in terms of cleaning up our waters, but our evidence shows there is still work to be done. "We hope this research will contribute to further efforts to clean up our coastal waters."

Can I still buy property in Spain after Brexit? Many people in the UK, hopeful of a life in sunnier climes, have put their dreams on hold as a result of the Brexit vote to leave the EU. One of the questions those hankering after a life in the sun want to know is, what will be different about buying property in Spain after the UK has exited the European Union? With Brexit negotiations still underway the impact on those wishing to move to Spain from the UK is still unclear. How British citizens will be treated in Spain after Brexit is yet to unfold. Issues around the free movement of people between the UK and EU countries, and trade agreements will no doubt play a part in shaping any UK citizen’s decision to make the move. Access to healthcare is also one of the current deal-breakers for those thinking of a move to Spain following the UK’s departure from the EU, and is on the mind of many expats already living in Spain. According to the Office for National Statistics, there are 308,805 British citizens living in Spain, and just under a third are aged 65 and over. Yes, you can still buy property in Spain after Brexit What we can be sure of is

the fact that it will still be possible to buy property in Spain after Brexit, even if the rules revert to those of non-EU citizens. The right to buy property in Spain isn’t restricted to citizens of the EU. Anyone who can pay the purchase price for a property in Spain is able to buy. People from all over the world buy and own property there. Since Article 50 was triggered, Spain’s foreign minister Alfonso Dastis, reported on The Andrew Marr Show that he will ensure the lives of Britons in Spain are not disrupted if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal. To date, expats’ rights as part of the Brexit negotiations are no clearer. Will buying a property in Spain cost me more money after Brexit? The cost of buying property in Spain is the same whether you are a Spanish national, a citizen of the EU, or from anywhere else in the world. Your nationality doesn’t matter. You will still be subject to the same costs, which broadly speaking include, the agreed purchase price for the property, plus purchase tax, the Notary’s fee, the property registry fee and other, smaller miscellaneous expenses. Notary fees are set by the

Spanish government and are based on the number of clauses in the property deeds and the declared value of the property. When you buy property in the UK, you exchange contracts, pay the vendor and the property is yours. You then have to register your title to the property in the land register. In Spain, you can’t add your title to the property register unless a Spanish notary witnesses the deeds of the sale. While the costs in euros for buying a property in Spain are the same to anyone, whatever their origin, Brexit may ultimately have an impact on the Spanish property market, and most certainly upon currency and how much your money is worth, so there will be extra costs to you in real terms. Always seek professional legal advice before investing in any Spanish property. Can I still buy property in Spain and rent it out after Brexit? Absolutely. Your nationality doesn’t matter. If you are a property owner in Spain you will be subject to the same rules as everyone else. You can still by to let, according to the rules applicable for the particular community where your property is situated. The only likely change will

be the amount of tax you pay for rental income from Spanish property. The rental income tax rate for Spanish citizens and residents of EU countries is 19 per cent. After Brexit, it is likely you will have to pay the same tax rate as non-EU citizens (currently 24 per cent). One of the biggest likely changes to tax in relation to property is inheritance tax. As part of the EU, British nationals currently pay the same inheritance tax rate as Spanish citizens. After Brexit this could change significantly. How easy will it be to travel to my property in Spain after Brexit?

The current arrangements within the EU for freedom of movement make it easy to travel without restrictions across the EU, including to Spain from the UK. After Brexit, it is still unclear how freedom of movement will be restricted. While it is unlikely there will be severe restrictions for short-term travel, such as holidays, there may be visa restrictions and complex rules for long-term stays or relocating to Spain after Brexit. In summary, yes you will still be able to buy property in Spain after Brexit. How much it costs you, in view of the impact of Brexit on the

Spanish property market and currency fluctuations, is as yet unknown. Taxes and restrictions on travel will also undoubtedly be affected. On the plus side, the fundamentals of buying and owning property in Spain will remain the same, so if it is your dream to own property in Spain, it will still be achievable regardless of the outcome of Brexit.

Catalonia’s property market cools

The global pension funds, insurance companies and other investors are refraining from buying offices in Catalonia because of fears that separating from Spain could lead to a mass outflow of companies from the region. The businesses in the rich northeastern region and its capital city of Barcelona have attracted tremendous interest, but has cooled off after the controversial independence

referendum. The investment in offices in Catalonia from October to December decreased by 63% compared to the previous quarter and 84% on an annual basis to 71.5 million EUR (88.4 million USD), according to data from the consulting company CBRE. There are fears that if Catalonia will separate from Spain, it will leave the EU, which will force companies to

leave the area to avoid paying the dues. The data, along with the decline in tourists, are a sign that the political uncertainty already has an impact on the economy as the funds are waiting to see if companies that have already moved their registered headquarters will also move employees. Some investors use uncertainty to get discounts. The Barcelona-based investment

fund Meridia Capital, which invests in Spanish real estate on behalf of global pension funds, insurance companies and state funds, received a 5% discount on Barnasud’s shopping center in the Catalan capital. It was bought in November for 21 million EUR. “I said: Give me a small discount that reflects the situation in Catalonia”, said the CEO of Meridia Capital, Javier Faus, whose company invested 800 million EUR in real estate in the last four years, mainly in office space, evenly distributed between Madrid and Barcelona. Meridia Capital manages 400 million EUR in assets in Barcelona, and Javier Faus said that high demand and shortage of buildings made it more difficult to get discounts earlier this year. Real estate accounted for 11% of foreign investment in Spain in the first nine months of 2017, making it the secondlargest sector receiving funds from abroad after energy. Spain is still an attractive destination for people who want to invest in business properties. The government expects the economy to grow by about 3% this year, which will be among the leading growing rates in Europe. But the weight of Catalonia in investment in Spanish

office space is roughly halved in the fourth quarter compared to the previous three quarters. The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, is a thriving Mediterranean city that has attracted many companies in technology and media business in recent years – from Amazon to the online gaming company King, the creator of Candy Crush. The area is an industrial center and accounts for one fifth of the Spanish economy and one quarter of exports. It was assessed as a leading European region for 20182019 because of its strategy of attracting foreign investment. The Catalan rental market, where luxury office rents grew by nearly 30% after 2013, has so far resisted. In the office rental market there are fewer deals in the fourth quarter, but their value and the percentage of occupied areas continue to grow. The rentals amounted to an average of 23.5 EUR per square meter for central office space in Q4 2017 compared to 31 EUR in Madrid. The average yield was 4.25%. By comparison, in the fourth quarter of 2013, when Spain exited the recession, the average cost per square meter was 17.75 EUR. More than 3,000 compa-

nies moved their registered outlets from October to December after a chaotic referendum that led to the declaration of independence and removal of the district administration. The authorities in Madrid tried to stop the independence movement by calling for elections. But the parties supporting independence have won them, and it is unclear whether the new administration, which is not yet in place, will continue to push for separation. Former leader Carlos Puccademon is in exile in Brussels and is threatened with arrest on charges of rebellion if he returns to Spain. Independence parties try to take it back to power. The companies continue to move their registered headquarters from the area, as the Spanish subsidiaries of RayBan, Luxottica, and the Wrigley moved already to Madrid earlier this month. At the same time there was no leakage of office positions. Amazon signed a deal to lease 11,000 square meters in June 2017. The company declined to comment on details, saying only that the office building will host a R&D center for machine learning and a hub to support vendors in southern Europe.

While it’s roasting, heat 1 tbsp of olive oil in a nonstick frying pan and add the shallots, sugar and thyme. Cook for 10-15 mins until soft, sweet and caramelised. Add the wine and cook for a few more mins until evaporated. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in salty boiling water until just cooked. Drain and set aside. For the cheese sauce, melt the butter in a non-stick saucepan over a medium heat with the bay leaf. Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 2 mins or so, until the roux is starting to bubble. Pour in the milk, little by little, stirring with a whisk, until fully incorporated and you have a smooth, lump-

Remove from the oven and allow to settle for about 10 mins, then serve with a crisp chicory salad.

Ingredients For the tartare sauce 1 egg yolk 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 100ml vegetable oil 1 banana shallot, finely chopped 3 small pickled onions, finely chopped 10 cornichons, finely sliced 100g smoked eel fillet, diced 1 tbsp finely chopped chervil or parsley lemon wedges and peas or mushy peas and chips, to serve For the fish fingers 100g plain flour 2 eggs, whisked 100g panko breadcrumbs

2 large sole fillets sunflower oil, for deep frying Method In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolk, vinegar and mustard. Slowly pour in the vegetable oil, whisking continuously until it is pale, thick and creamy then season with the salt. This can also be done in a mini food processor. Fold the shallots, pickled onions, cornichons, smoked eel and herbs in to make a chunky sauce and set aside. Put the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in separate flat containers. Remove any skin from the sole and trim the fillets to a nice finger shape. First, place the

fish in the flour and coat evenly, then dip it in the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Repeat this again so you have a thick coating on the fish. Heat the oil in a deep-fat fryer, deep saucepan or wok to 180C, or until a piece of breadcrumb sizzles straight away when dropped in. Fry the fillets for 2 mins until golden. Drain the fish on kitchen paper, season with salt and serve with a generous dollop of the smoked eel tartare sauce, lemon wedges for squeezing over and chips, peas or mushy peas, depending on preference. Chicken & Leek Filo Pie

Ingredients 75g butter 2 leeks, halved lengthways and sliced 300g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 25g flour 300ml chicken stock 300g cooked chicken, shredded 75ml double cream 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard

small handful parsley 6 sheets of filo pastry 60ml olive oil 1 tsp thyme leaves 1 tsp nigella seeds cabbage and mash, to serve (optional) Method Heat a third of the butter in a large saucepan, cook the leeks for 10 mins or until

softened, then tip onto a plate and repeat with another third of the butter and the mushrooms. Heat the remaining butter in the same saucepan and, once melted, stir in the flour and cook the sandy paste for 1 min, then stir in the chicken stock a ladleful at a time. Leave on a low heat to simmer for 5 mins,

then stir the chicken, leek, mushrooms, cream and mustard into the sauce, add the parsley and season with salt and cracked black pepper. Spoon into a 20cm pie dish and leave to cool. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Lay a sheet of filo on a chopping board and brush with olive oil,

then place on top of the pie with the corners resting on the sides of the dish, then repeat the process, placing the next sheet slightly offcentre – the idea is to fan the sheets of filo. Brush every layer with oil, and on the last layer sprinkle over salt, thyme leaves and nigella seeds. Press the pastry gently into the

edge of the dish. Bake for about 1 hr until the pastry is deep golden, then remove from the oven and serve with buttered cabbage and mashed potato, if you like.

Unicorn Poo Meringues

Ingredients 4 large egg whites, at room temperature 100g caster sugar 100g icing sugar, sifted 4 food colouring gels or pastes (we used pink, yellow, blue and green) small amount of white and black ready-to-roll fondant icing for the eyes and mouth You will also need 4cm round cutter or circle to draw around 1 large piping bag fitted with a large open star nozzle (1cm) 4 small paintbrushes Method Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas ½. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

Using a 4cm round cutter as a guide, draw 22 circles on each piece of parchment in pencil. Turn the parchment over. Whip up the egg whites in a stand mixer or with an electric hand whisk until they form stiff peaks. Gradually add the caster sugar in, a spoonful at a time, whisking in completely between each addition. Repeat with the icing sugar until the mixture is glossy and stiff. Put the piping bag nozzle down in a tall glass or jug. Roll down the top of the bag a little, over the rim, then paint a thin stripe of each coloured food gel from the nozzle all the way up to the top of the bag.

Spoon in the meringue mixture. Pipe swirls of meringue onto the trays using the circles as a guide. Bake for 20 mins then turn down to 100C/80C fan/gas ¼ and cook for a further hour, or until they are completely cooked through and sound hollow when tapped on the base. Leave to cool in the oven. Mould small pieces of white and black fondant icing to create eyes and mouths. Stick these on the cooled meringues with a small dab of royal icing (if they don’t stick by themselves). .com Las Fallas – Valencia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Festival What are the Fallas? The Fallas are unique. During a few days in March, Valencia becomes an amazing open-air ephemeral Street Arts Museum in order to celebrate spring’s arrival. Around 800 Fallas, created using large wooden structures covered with painted papier-mâché, conquer the city. These monuments, combined with music, pyrotechnics and traditional costume all create this fabulous atmosphere. In 2016 UNESCO decided to list it as a Cultural Intangible World Heritage.

Mascletà From 1 to 19 March, every day at 2 pm in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the city vibrates to the sound of the traditional mascletà, a display of gunpowder explosions that beats out a unique sound. Afterwards, the city’s terraces fill up as people go to enjoy a typical aperitif and some traditional Valencian food under the Mediterranean sun. La Plantà – 15 to 16 March On the night of 15 to 16 March the plantà (installation) takes place, when the falleros and falleras, the men and women who construct the fallas (monuments), get together to work through the night on erecting them, to have them finished by dawn on the 16th. Prize-Giving Ceremony – 17 March On the morning of 17th, the falleros and their commissions go to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to collect their prizes. Prior to the ceremony the jury visits all of the city’s sculptures in order to decide upon the winners.

Fireworks and the Nit del Foc - 15 to 19 March Every night from 15 to 18 March, the sky of Valencia is filled with the light and colour of impressive firework displays. At 12 midnight, people gather on Paseo de la Alameda to enjoy the best display of colour and light. Not to mention the spectacular Nit del foc (Night of Fire), which is held during the early hours of the 18th and offers a fireworks display, the only one of its kind in the world.

Ofrenda de Flores (Offering of Flowers) – 17 and 18 March All of the city’s fallas commissions will take place in a parade from their respective districts to the Plaza de la Virgin in order to make an offering of flowers to Our Lady of the Forsaken, the Patron Saint of Valencia. The celebration takes place from 4 pm until past nightfall. With all of the bunches of flowers given by the falleras to the Virgin, an impressive 15 metre-high tapestry is formed on the main façade of the Basilica and a mantle is made for the Virgin. La Cremà (The Burning) – 19 March On 19 March all of the sculptures, both those in the large and the children’s categories, go up in flames. At 10 pm the Cremà of the children’s sculptures begins. Two hours later it is the turn of the large monuments. The falla in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the last one to burn, at 1 am in the morning. It is always preceded by a small display of spectacular fireworks which fill the square with noise, light and colour, leading to the Cremà of the city’s last falla and with it the end of the festival. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

From the old days of Crown Court and Perry Mason, I’ve always loved legal dramas, and The Good Fight, which returned for a second series on More Four last night, comes straight out of the top draw. A spin-off from the equally excellent The Good Wife, this Chicago-based show blends in politics, the courtroom (with the usual mix of eccentric judges),humour, and workplace intrigue in one of the smartest scripted dramas around. It boasts a fine ensemble cast led by ex-Good Wife stars Christine Baranski (pictured) and Brit-actor Cush Jumbo, along with guest appearances from some excellent character performers. Episode one packed a lot in, carrying on the big story of an investagation of a major ponzi scheme and the prosecution of the father’s daughter, who just happens to be part of the law firm that The Good Wife focuses on. It’s all a ruse from the FBI to flush out her dad who is hiding out abroad. Jane ”Glee” Lynch almost steals the show as the FBI

An Excellent Fight

investigator, and we have a new big partner joining the law firm that’s going to lock horns with Christine Baranski’s character, Diane Lockhart. The Good Fight, made by CBS, is an absolute joy and even better if you can catch up on series one, and even the back catalogue of The Good Wife. Oh for a UK show that could cover the same territory, though the

much-missed Silk came close at times. Piers Morgan may not be everybody’s cup of tea and he’s just signed a two-year contract extension to present ITV’s Good Morning Britain. I do like his ability to ask a direct question, especially on his Life Stories series, but something did not feel right for me (for the first time ever) as comedian Jim Davidson was in the

spotlight last Saturday. A parade of politicians were wheeled out to say what a great bloke Davidson was, but when Morgan pressed him for most of the show about his various marriages and relationships (and accusations of domestic abuse), it was almost brushed aside by Davidson in an unsympathetic and almost awkward manner. Davidson missed a

chance to put the record straight, and whilst Life Stories has been a good vehicle for guests in the past to pour out everything, in these much better days when the rights of women are rightly to the fore, I found this programme uncomfortable viewing. Sir Ken Dodd was a legend and as a kid growing up seeing this funny looking guy on sixties tv, I became an instant fan. He had stacks of shows almost non-stop for ITV and the Beeb at that time, yet he had to be almost rediscovered by tv bosses back in 1994 with LWT’s classic “An Audience with Ken Dodd”. In fact, eight years later, he became only the second person to be awarded a second “Audience”, and both programmes are hilarious from top to bottom, and should be watched by any student of top class comedy. What a performer, and (as I personally discovered when I interviewed Doddy back in 2001) what a lovely and generous guy. I would also apply that phrase to Jim Bowen who passed away this week at

the age of 80. After a disastrous first series, he managed to turn Bullseye back into a massive hit in the eighties, having left the world of teaching in the seventies to appear on Granada’s stand-up show, The Comedians. At the height of his fame, I was hosting a live charity show at a big venue in front of thousands of people, and I got some butterflies. Jim was the star turn, and took me to the bar, bought me a drink, and gave me some tips that I never forgot. He didn’t have to do that, but that was the measure of the man, who also invited me to go along to some Bullseye recordings. “Super, smashing, great”, as Jim would say. Call The Midwife finished the latest series on Sunday, and I’m going check myself into a rehab facility after everything that has unfolded! What a show, and I’m convinced there’s been some kind of internal contest going on between CTW and The Walking Dead as to how many people are going to leave or get bumped off!

Given food for thought, David returns home and announces that he wants to leave Weatherfield for a new life in New Zealand near his dad. Meanwhile, Tyrone is struggling with Ruby, who is still scared of him after he hit her.

Monday Following Big Mo’s shock announcement that Kat is dead, Stacey becomes determined to raise the money to give her the send-off she deserves. Stacey and Mo visit various Albert Square residents in the hope of securing their support. This includes Ian offering to help with the catering and the Carters promising to host the wake for free. Tuesday With Big Mo clearly on edge, plans continue for Kat’s funeral. Martin gathers all of Kat’s friends together to brainstorm ideas on how to raise the money they need. It’s soon decided that a fundraising night should be thrown at The Vic in honour of Kat. When Martin senses that the funeral plans are getting too much for Stacey, he continues to show his support for her. However, no-one is prepared for what happens

Thursday Stacey has some big questions for Jean after her bombshell, but Mo jumps in and undermines her. Mo also asks Jean to contribute some money towards the funeral, but Jean insists on talking to Ollie. Later, the fundraiser at the Queen Vic begins and it’s not long before the party gets rowdy as Walford’s residents celebrate Kat. Kat is still very much alive and makes her return to Albert Square, leaving Mo in an uncomfortable position. What’s going on? Meanwhile, Ian comes over to see the Slaters with the money.

Ric Griffin finally stands trial, accused of manslaughter, and the events surrounding Elaine Warren’s death are relived in court.

With new revelations emerging, can Ric fight for freedom? Meanwhile, desperate to no longer be Roxanna’s pet patient, Ollie pushes himself to the brink. But what future awaits him on the other side? Elsewhere, Jac has eyes for Fletch, but when things take a turn for the worse, Frieda is the one she turns to for help.

Q

Richard, some of our emails are going straight to junk. Why is this please?

Hi John, there are a number of reasons why your emails may go into your recipient’s spam folder. These can include content of the email, whether you have previously been marked as a spammer by your recipient of their email provider, your IP address and that of your email provider and the reputation of your domain. Most of these things you can’t influence, usually the spam rules are applied by your recipient’s actions (i.e. if they mark you as spam or not) and those of their email service provider.

Ford’s latest special-edition Mustang is the car of your California dreams Mustang GT models with the six-speed manual transmission

The 2019 Ford Mustang lineup is heavy on nostalgia. In addition to a special model commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bullitt, Ford is dredging up another name from the Mustang’s past. The Mustang GT California Special (or GT/CS for short) is making a return for the new model year after a one-year hiatus. The California Special name dates back to 1968, when it was popular for dealers to create region-specific special editions. The first California Special borrowed styling cues from the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype and became something of a cult classic. Ford revived the California Special in 2007 and has offered the model near continuously over the past decade. Like previous California Specials, the 2019 model gets cosmetic changes for a sportier look. The changes include a fading stripe along the body sides, blacked-out grille, a new front splitter, and model-specific five-spoke wheels. On the inside, the California Special gets new Miko suede-trimmed seats. Naturally for a

special edition, there is plenty of badging inside and out announcing the car’s identity. The California Special is based on the Mustang GT, so it uses a 5.0-liter V8 with 460 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. That is the same output as the non-California Special Mustang GT. Buyers looking for more power can check out the 2019 Mustang Bullitt, which boasts 475 hp with the same torque output. The Mustang got a major overhaul for the 2018 model year but, in addition to the California Special and Bullitt special editions, Ford is making a few more changes across the lineup for 2019. The 2019 Ford Mustang goes on sale this summer. Pricing for the California Special and other variants will be announced closer to launch. Looking further ahead, a new Shelby GT500 Mustang will launch next year with more than 700 hp, making it the most powerful Ford production car ever.

How will car makers meet new CO2 laws? Firms face severe fines if they fail to comply with rigorous EU regulations arriving in 2021

Three years from now, Europe’s car makers will face perhaps their toughest test for many decades when EU law requires them to meet very rigorous fuel economy laws. However, according to two auto industry consultants, the combination of new testing legislation, the effects of Dieselgate and the market shift towards SUVs could make it near impossible for car makers to meet the laws. Failing to do so would result in manufacturers facing fines of hundreds of millions of euros. Under the regulations, each car maker has a CO2 output target, which is averaged over its whole range of cars. So while the targeted average across the whole industry is just 95g/km of CO2, the individual requirement varies, via a complex calculation, depending on the weight and size of vehicles built and how many of them the manufacturer sells each year. Jaguar Land Rover, for instance, has a fleet CO2 target of 132g/km because it sells fewer than 300,000 vehicles in the EU each year and makes larger-thanaverage vehicles. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles,by contrast, has a fleet target of 91.1g/km. In reality, the 95g/km average means an average real-world

economy of around 78mpg across a car maker’s entire fleet. And that is a huge technological hurdle. If that doesn’t sound difficult enough, the EU has decided to introduce a new, and much more rigorous, way to measure fuel economy. When the original regulations were set back in 2012, the standard EU fuel economy test was the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). This, however, has since been dropped and replaced by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). WLTP is a much more ‘real-world’ test for fuel consumption and tailpipe pollution. Unsurprisingly, auto industry consultancy JATO Dynamics says that the introduction of WLTP for fuel economy calculations alone will be enough to make it “exceptionally difficult” to meet the 2021 95g/km figure. If that wasn’t bad enough for car makers, the last 12 months have brought even worse news: collapsing sales of diesel vehicles. In October 2015, around the time Dieselgate broke, diesel cars accounted for about 52% of the new car market across Europe. In November 2017, that share had slumped to just 42% in western Europe, according to reports.

All Change For 2019 New regulations for dropping the ball and measures to speed up the pace of play have been incorporated into the new Rules of Golf announced by the R&A and the USGA. The governing bodies have made significant changes to various procedures in golf which will come into effect on January 1, 2019, following extensive research involving feedback from professionals and amateurs. Players at all levels will now be required to drop the ball from knee height, whether they are taking a penalty or free drop, in an adjustment to original proposals released last year which recommended the ball could be dropped from any height. The measurements for dropping zones have also been changed, with players being permitted to use any club in their bag apart from the putter, so those still using a "broom-handled" putter would not gain an advantage over the rest of the field. An unintentional double-hit will no longer incur a oneshot penalty, while a new local rule will be introduced for lost balls or those that have gone out-of-bounds, with golfers being allowed to drop the ball in the vicinity under a two-shot penalty

rather than having to make their way back to the sight of their original shot. There have been no other changes to the initial proposals unveiled last year, which included a relaxation of penalties for moving balls and other infringements on the putting green, while rules regarding bunker play will also be adjusted. David Rickman, the executive director of governance at The R&A, said: "We are pleased to be introducing the new Rules of Golf after a collaborative and wide-ranging review process which has embraced the views of golfers, rules experts and administrators worldwide. "We believe that the new Rules are more in tune with what golfers would like and are easier to understand and apply for everyone who enjoys playing this great game." USGA senior director of Rules & amateur status, Thomas Pagel, added: "We're thankful for the golfers, administrators and everyone in the game who took the time to provide us with great insight and thoughtful feedback. We couldn't be more excited to introduce the new Rules ahead of their education and implementation."

Playas Girls Win

A fifth-minute goal gave the Escuela Racing Playas De Orihuela girls team a hard-fought one-nil victory at Benidorm last weekend. Excellent goalkeeping and a fine defensive display kept the Benidorm team at bay for the Playas De Orihuela team to record their away win. In other results, the Querubines lost four-one at Torrevieja, whilst the Benjamin side won threetwo away to Almoradi, with the Prebenjamins drawing

three-three on the road at Albatera. The Alevin side also got a three-three result at Albatera, whilst the Infantil Brave line-up went down two-nil, at Crevillente, and the Infantil Federado XI whacked Horadada, sixone. The biggest margin of the weekend had the Playas Juvenils destroying Racing San Miguel nine-one away from home, whilst the Cadetes lost two-one to Horadada.

CD ALMORADI 3 CD THADER 3 This local Preferente Group Four clash was great entertainment at the Sadrian stadium last Sunday, with Almoradi conceding goals right at the end of both periods. Thader after this weekend’s break, have a massive must-win match against Alicante University to come at the end of the month, with the Rojales side five points behind the University team, who occupy the third playoff position, and who were held nil-nil at home by fourth-placed Villajoyosa. Almoradi, under new coach Roberto Cases, are a different kettle of fish now, but are still too close to the relegation area for comfort, and their next match on March 25th will see them away to Villena. As for Sunday’s clash, both sides had chances to score, but it was Almoradi who started the brighter, and a defensive mix-up saw Conti pick up the pieces to open up the

home account, and then Benja doubled the lead with a header from a corner. Thader, though, got themselves back into it during injury time as Ruben converted a penalty after one of his colleagues was pushed down in the box. That lifted the Thader spirits, who then started strongly in the second half, but a good strike from Ivan made it three-one to Ivan, and the points seemed to be going into the Almoradi bank. Thader knowing that losing the match would be a massive body blow to their playoff aspirations struck back with a short range shot from Nino, and when it appeared that the result was going to be an Almoradi win, Javi grabbed the point in a scrappy equaliser as Almoradi failed to clear the ball from their area, as it went round like it was in a pinball machine.

Sunday’s Monte victory kept them in third place in the Valencia Primera Regional group eight table, and saw another hat-trick from striker Vaz (pictured front row, second left) who increased his tally for the season to 23 league goals. On a cold blustery and showery day, Monte should have sewn up the points at the break, but they somehow managed to let the visitors back into the game. The first half play the home side play their quick, fast flowing football, with Vaz looking sharp. But Bahia actually had the best early chance of the game which forced the Monte keeper, Dani, into an excellent double save. But on the half hour mark, Vaz who volleyed the ball into the top corner of the net, and ten minutes later, he got onto the end of a through ball from Maccan, and rounded the Bahia keeper to slot the ball into an empty net.

The second half saw Montesinos their foot off the pedal and this allowed Bahia to push forward, and sloppy defensive in the 63rd minute allowed Bahia to score. Keeper Dani had to once again be at his best to keep the visitors at bay before substitute Manuel Sanchez smashed home a third goal for Montesinos in the 75th minute, before Bahia came back into the game and from a free-kick, managed to score a second goal to make it 3-2 with seven minutes remaining. But in the 88th minute, Vaz made it 4-2 with a cheeky hat-trick goal, as he left not only the Bahia defender, but also the goalkeeper on their backsides, much to the joy of the local fans. A blank league weekend due to the fiestas means that Monte have their next game at the end of the month away to the division’s whipping boys Torrevieja CF.

Easy For Callosa Third Division News

CALLOSA DEPORTIVA 3 Another defeat for mid-table meandering Torrevieja could almost have been the most unlikely of draws, as a three-nil home advantage for Callosa (pictured above) was slashed in the 86th and 88th minutes with a double strike from Samu, the first one being from the penalty spot. The score flattered Torrevieja who fielded three new players in the never ending merrygo-round of comings and goings, with keeper Chus joining from Bigastro plus midfielder Josu from Xativa Olympic and defender Samuel from Madrid area team Ciempozuelos. The result sees Torry 10th in the table with 35 points, whilst Callosa who had a bad start to the season, have steadily climbed to

CD TORREVIEJA 2

eighth place with 39 points to their name. Callosa were two-nil up at the interval through Molina and Salva, with Torry offering little of merit, and when the home team got their third through Juanjo Manresa in the 67th minute, it looked all over until Torry’s late flourish. A string of departures have been announced along with the promise of new players, that will have some training session time to bed in as this weekend is blank in Preferente Group Four. Pablo Tenza, Mani, Manu Vidal, and Vicente Zaragoza all left the club this week, with the departures of Mario, Juanpe and Calderón announced before the Callosa match.

Orihuela recorded a three-one victory over Elche Ilicitano to keep them safely in the Valencian regional third division play-off area, some nine points clear of fifth-placed Torre Levante. With the top two sides

Levante and Castellon sharing the spoils in a one-all draw, Orihuela are just two points behind them, and now have a Saturday afternoon trip to struggling Bunol. In contrast, Elche Ilicitano are just a point above the

relegation area, and entertain Alzira tomorrow afternoon. 11th placed Crevillente entertain second-bottom Borriol this Sunday at noon, having lost two-one at Novelda last weekend.

Magical Messi

Ronaldo Double

BARCELONA 3 CHELSEA 0 (AGG 4-1)

EIBAR 1 REAL MADRID 2

Barcelona proved too good for Chelsea at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night, with a 3-0 Champions League win on the night and a 4-1 aggregate victory. Lionel Messi struck within three minutes, slamming the ball through Thibaut Courtois’s legs, before Ousmane Dembele fired a second into the top corner to round off a swift counterattack, and Messi rounded off the night with another low drive. It was another memorable night for Messi who scored his 99th and 100th Champions League goals – in 123 games – which both skidded through Courtois’s legs. The draw for the quarter-finals takes place this lunchtime, starting at noon at the UEFA headquarters in Switzerland. Besides Barcelona, there’s strong Spanish interest with holders Real Madrid and Manchester United’s conquerors, Sevilla, in the draw.

Routine Victory

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his fine form as his double gave Real Madrid a win at Eibar in La Liga on Saturday. Ronaldo netted the opener against the run of play, finishing from 12 yards after being played through on goal by Luka Modric. Eibar defender Ivan Ramis equalised with his third goal of the season, a header from a second-half corner, but Ronaldo won it with six minutes remaining with a closerange header, his 17th goal in just 10 games. The result means that third-placed Real is still 15 points behind leaders Barcelona, with a match against Girona to come this Sunday.

Ilicitanos Draw

CD ALCOYANO 1 ELCHE 1 It was another game of two halves in last Sunday’s local clash in Segunda Division B, where the Ilicitanos dominated the first period, and Javi Flores deservedly put them ahead on the half-hour mark. Elche were much less effective in the second half, and Alcoyano deservedly equalised through Nieto in the 65th minute. New coach Pacheta said that his side lost focus for a quarter of an hour in the second half, and paid the price as Alcoyano got their leveller. Elche remain third in the table and four points above the fifthplaced team trying to get into the play-off zone. There are nine matches remaining in the ordinary league campaign, with five of the fixtures to be played at the Martinez Valero stadium, starting with a big six-pointer this Sunday at home to the team below them, UD Cornellá. The match kicks-off at 4.30 pm.

Madrid Rumours

Spurs Return? MALAGA 0 BARCELONA 2 Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho scored as Barca, minus Messi who became a father for the third time on Friday evening, comfortably dispatched La Liga strugglers at La Rosaleda on Saturday. Suarez headed in from Jordi Alba's cross before Coutinho's exquisite flick put the game beyond the hosts before half-time, as Barca made it 35 La Liga games unbeaten on the Costa del Sol. Samuel Garcia was red carded for a poor challenge on Alba after 30 minutes, and Malaga's relegation fears increased as they suffered their seventh consecutive league defeat. Barca remain eight points clear at the top of the table, and entertain 12TH placed Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Real Madrid could reportedly re-sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, as a rumoured replacement is also mentioned for coach Zinedine Zidane. Morata joined Chelsea from the Champions League title holders for an initial 60-million-euro fee last year but has struggled to impress as Diego Costa’s replacement. The 25-year-old opted to quit Real Madrid due to a lack of first-team opportunities under Zinedine Zidane. But, according to Don Balon, Zidane could be replaced by Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri (pictured below) in the dugout at the end of the season and the Italian is targeting a swoop. The Spanish publication claims that Allegri has told Madrid president Florentino Perez that he wants to bring Morata back to the club. He knows Morata well, having managed him during the striker’s two-year spell at Juventus between 2014 and 2016. The Spain international hit 27 goals in 93 appearances for the Italian outfit, which prompted Real Madrid to activate a buyback clause.

Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale is reportedly set to leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season and has been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford. But the uncertainty over Jose Mourinho’s future following their Champions League horror show against Sevilla has put Bale off making the switch, according to Diario Gol. And he is now hot on heading back to Tottenham because he thinks they can challenge United on all fronts, the Spanish publication claim. Bale has slipped down the pecking order at Real Madrid after an injury-plagued 18 months. As a result, the Wales international has found himself on the bench for Real Madrid’s crunch games this season. He was limited to substitute appearances in December’s El Clasico and the Champions League last-16 wins against Paris Saint-Germain.

Spain know that victory over Belgium in Brussels this Saturday will secure them the Europe 1 spot in Pool A in Japan. Closely watched by King Felipe VI and Education, Culture and Sports Minister Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, captain Jaime Nava and his team battled to their best result for over two decades when they thrashed the Czech Republic 90-8. They earned a Mexican wave from their fans as they scored 12 tries to Germany's one to dispatch 'The Eagles' and seal an easy victory that they dedicated to the King, who immediately ran down onto the pitch to congratulate his national team. The Spanish can clinch their ticket to Japan with success in their next outing, against Belgium next Saturday. 'Los Leones' are lying second in their qualifying group on 26 points. Romania top the table with 29 points, but have completed all their games, including a defeat to Spain last month, meaning success in Brussels tomorrow would lift 'Los Leones' to the top of the table.

Confident Seb

Sebastian Vettel insists he is confident in Ferrari’s chances ahead of the new F1 season, denying his team are concerned about Mercedes and Red Bull’s pace from pre-season testing in Spain last week. Coming off a much-improved 2017 season in which they were Mercedes’ closest challengers for the title, it was an encouraging two-week test for Ferrari as they comfortably clocked the fastest times in Barcelona. This one-lap speed, however, was offset slightly by the fact their main rivals opted against revealing their true qualifying pace while, perhaps more worryingly, some paddock calculations projected that both Mercedes and Red Bull were ahead of the Scuderia on the longer runs. But Vettel, aiming for a fifth world championship this year, doubted this would be the case at the season-opening Australian GP in two weeks’ time, hinting that these race simulation times were irrelevant. “Our competitors — Mercedes and Red Bull — used one type of tyre for their race distance simulations, which is something you can’t do in a Grand Prix,” said the German, referencing their long medium tyre stints. “This has an impact on the strategies and ultimately on the result.” Though unable to directly compare Ferrari’s shorter runs to certain others, Vettel, who is anticipating another rivalry with Lewis Hamilton this year, is also optimistic about the potential of his new car. Despite the unusual sight of smoke in the pit lane, it was another reliable winter as Ferrari completed the second most amount of laps behind Mercedes. “We did not experience any major issues with the car, and I had fun driving it,” added Vettel. “I think we’re starting from a good base with our SF71-H. “Now we’ll have to work on development to further explore and improve its potential. I have a lot of confidence in our team, I know how skilled and committed the guys in Maranello are.” Red Bull’s Christian Horner claimed world champions Mercedes were “very much the favourites” ahead of the start of the season in Melbourne, but can Vettel and Ferrari repeat their 2017 race victory? “I can’t wait to be in Australia, because once we get on track there, we will all be driving and racing under the same conditions,” he explained. “And, as I said before, I have confidence in our car.”

ANDRES DECIDES

IRELAND’S SLAM BID Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will decide next month whether to accept an offer from a Chinese club. Iniesta, 33, a product of Barca's academy, said his future may lie elsewhere after their Champions League last-16 win over Chelsea on Wednesday. The playmaker was influential in his side's 3-0 home victory before being substituted to a standing ovation. "I will make a decision to stay at Barcelona or go to China before April 30," he said.

Tomorrow’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will be given a big lift if Ireland add the Grand Slam to the 2018 Six Nations championship title at Twickenham. Standing in Ireland’s way are England (live on ITV, kick-off at 3.45 pm), with Wales coach Warren Gatland suggesting that England's "desperation" could spur them to victory over Ireland. "There's a lot of pressure on England having lost the last couple. The wolves come out and [coach] Eddie Jones is coming under a bit of criticism now." Ireland will be chasing history at Twickenham as they look to complete only their third Grand Slam, but the former Ireland coach backs the hosts to spoil the party. "Desperation and showing a bit of character might come

through a bit on Saturday”. added Gatland. Dan Biggar is back at fly-half for Wales to face France in Cardiff tomorrow (live on BBC 1, kick-off at 6.00pm). The Ospreys player takes over from Gareth Anscombe, who drops to the bench. Meanwhile, centre Mathieu Bastareaud will lead France in the place of injured captain Guilhem Guirado. Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has made five changes for his side’s trip to Rome tomorrow to take on wooden spoon side Italy (live on ITV, kick-off at 1.30 pm). Scotland are aiming to match last season's tally of three victories, following home successes against France and England.

LIAM’S KNOCK

QUARTER-FINAL CLASHES

Liam Livingstone made 88 as England's batsmen struggled yesterday on the second and final day of their day-night tour match against a New Zealand XI in Hamilton. Only Livingstone impressed, with the uncapped batsman hitting 13 fours and one six as England ended on 319. England have another two-day tour match - this time played with a red ball - beginning today, before the first Test begins on March 22nd.

It’s FA Cup quarter-final weekend, and the matches are spread out over two days for the benefit of live television coverage, writes ALEX TRELINSKI. First up tomorrow lunchtime is Swansea City versus Tottenham(live on BT Sport, kick-off at 1.15pm), with Spurs still smarting from their Champions League exit at the hands of Juventus. The cup run has given the Welsh side an extra boost in their battle to preserve their Premier League status, as they stand four points above the relegation zone, having seemingly looked from certs for the drop before Carlos Carvahal took over. Another team hurt by a Champions League KO is Manchester United, and they entertain Brighton tomorrow

evening (live on BT Sport, kick-off at 8.45 pm). Memories of course come flooding back when Joe Melia managed the south coast side, and forced an FA Cup final replay in 1983 against the Red Devils. Wigan’s cup run has not helped their promotion prospects from League One, but they’ve claimed Premier League scalps and must feel hopeful of adding Southampton to that list on Sunday (live on BBC 1, kick-off at 2.30 pm). The Saints of course have a new boss in the shape of Mark Hughes who replaced the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino. Last of the ties comes at the King Power, with another Champions League eliminee, Chelsea, looking to pick up the pieces at Leicester City (live on BBC 1, kick-off at 5.30 pm).
