n Alicante Provincebased gang of three men and two women, who pretended to be working for the Iberdrola power company to gain entry into elderly people’s homes and then steal from them, have been arrested by the National Police. They co-ordinated robberies in Cartagena and Elche, as well as further afield in Castellón, Valencia and Zamora. Elderly women were targeted by the gang, as they paid home visits to say they wanted to read an electricity or gas meter, and they would then steal money, jewellery, or any other items of value that they could lay their hands on. The National Police in Cartagena, who have been leading the investigation, say that the gang have been

operating for the last two years throughout the country, and that their inquiries remain open, as more potential incidents are being looked at. They detained the five individuals at addresses in Alicante, Villena and in a hostel in the Madrid area, where two of the accused were looking for new victims. Three of the group were refused bail when they appeared before a Cartagena judge, who accepted a request from prosecutors for custody on the grounds that they would be likely to reoffend. The catalogue of incidents included an 83-year-old Cartagena woman being robbed of 1,400 euro in cash and 12 thousand euro of jewellery, whilst a victim in Castellón had her stolen

jewellery pawned off in a Torrevieja gold shop. In another robbery, a Valencia resident had their bank card stolen, with over a thousand euro being withdrawn from ATM machines.

The gang members, who live in Alicante, San Vicente, and Villena have been charged with a variety of crimes including theft, fraud, impersonation and belonging to a criminal group.

n Irish resident of Torrevieja has been arrested for planning to sell fake sports shirts at a big profit, after shipping in the counterfeit goods from China into Alicante-Elche airport. The 27-year-old man was detained at his home, after a joint operation between Guardia Civil and the Tax Agency, and has being charged with infringing copyright. He had shelled out three thousand euro for the fake shirts, which would have netted him around 75 thousand euro, if he had been successful in selling them online. The authorities had their

suspicions aroused when five packages arrived at Alicante-Elche airport from China, addressed to a Torrevieja residence. The packs were opened up and high quality counterfeit shirts were discovered, which would have been difficult for non-experts to work out that they were fakes. One of the football club emblems did not exactly match up with the way it should have been embossed on the shirt, following a close examination, and that led investigators to their conclusion that they had netted a full consignment of illegal copies.

Villamartin residents recently staged a protest to complain about the state of their roads, which they claim have been neglected by Orihuela council. The demonstration, organised by the C.L.A.R.O. political party, saw residents of Calle Mozart and Las Valencias in Villamartin

gathering to point out the problems with potholes in the roads. According to those living in the area, the holes have grown big enough to grow flowers, and pose dangers to pedestrians crossing the road, as well as to the suspension of cars passing over them.

A British couple made a sharp exit from their car after it caught fire on the N-332 as it passed through Torrevieja on Monday morning. The Brits were driving through the La Mata area close to the junction with

Avenida de los Europeos when they noticed smoke pouring out of the engine. Three fire tenders quickly arrived on the scene to extinguish the blaze, however, the car ended up being totally destroyed.

Lights Out The annual Earth Hour will be staged this Saturday evening as part of a global movement, which brings millions together across the world to call for greater action on climate change. Each year, millions of people around the world switch off their lights and organise events to show they care about the future of our planet. Many local municipalities are getting involved in

tomorrow’s switch-off between 8.30 and 9.30 pm, with the Playa Flamenca esplanade being illuminated only by candles, with the same move applying to Orihuela City’s Gabriel Miró Glorieta. Torrevieja’s Town Hall lighting will be switched off for an hour along with lights in the adjoining Church of the Immaculate Conception, and the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre.

A Later Date

The opening date for Corvera Airport has been pushed back to January next year, according to facility operator, AENA, and its president, Jaime García Legaz, who also revealed that he’s in talks with four carriers to bring routes to the new facility. In a meeting with Murcia regional business leaders, García Legaz, said that the second week of January 2019 was what he was looking at for the transfer of flights from San Javier, as opposed to recent projections of this coming December. The AENA boss also said that he was negotiating with four carriers, namely Easy Jet, Ryanair, Volotea, and

Iberia Express on opening up new services with Corvera, in addition to making sure that current servic-

es running in and out of the existing facility at San Javier are maintained at the new regional airport location.

Seat Of Agony A Torrevieja fire crew had to rescue a man who got one of his testicles trapped in a shower chair in his hotel room. The unusual emergency happened on Monday morning at the Playas de Torrevieja hotel in Cabo Cervera, with the victim aged in his sixties said to be suffering from dementia. He was sitting on a shower seat and was being assisted by two care assistants, when one of his testicles got caught in two bars

of the folding unit. The man, who was in understandable agony for half an hour, had his pain

brought to end when the firemen arrived and immediately managed to release his testicle.

Homeward Bound A British man wanted for rape charges dating back to the eighties is back in the UK, after hiding out in the Murcia region. As reported in last week’s Courier, the fugitive was arrested a fortnight ago by the National Police in Los Baños de Fortuna, after a nine-month operation to track him down. He was taken to Alicante’s Fontcalent prison before being handed over to members of the UK National Crime Agency on Tuesday at Alicante-Elche airport.

The unnamed man is accused of raping two women between 1980 and 1983, one of whom had just turned 15-years-old.

Filthy Computer

The trial of an Almoradi man started on Tuesday at the Alicante Provincial Court in Elche, some five years after he was arrested for possessing pornographic images of children on his computer.

Prosecutors are calling for him to be put behind bars for seven years, stating that between 2011 and 2013, the accused possessed and distributed a variety of obscene pictures and videos involving children aged between

four and 13 years. The man was part of a number of pornographic distribution networks, and is said to have used sophisticated software so that his address could not be detected.

Pallet Blaze A pallet factory in the La Marina village area will have to be demolished after it was deemed to be in danger of collapsing, after it was seriously damaged in a huge blaze on Saturday evening. A security guard raised the alarm after 10.00 pm at the Moval premises(picture from the Informacion newspaper) on the La Hoya road in the Sierra de El Molar industrial estate. Fire crews were scrambled from Almoradi, Elche, and Crevillente were

brought in to deal with the blaze, with dampening down

work continuing well into Sunday morning.

Tuesday Blaze An electrical fire at a disused laundry business on the Orihuela Costa forced the evacuation of 20 residents of an apartment block on Tuesday evening. The blaze started at around 8.00 pm in an electrical panel at the old laundry located on the ground floor of the building on Calle Las OrquĂdeas in Playa Flamenca. The block, mainly occupied by British nationals, was evacuated as a precaution, as the Torrevieja fire fighters extinguished the

Fanny’s Deadline

Torrevieja council says that they’ve given a final instruction to the owners of the deserted Casa Torre de Los Balcones off the CV-95 to undertake urgent maintenance on a voluntary basis. Councillor Fanny Serrano said a deadline had been

given to the company, and that if they failed to deliver, then the authority had set in place measures to appropriate the 18th-century manor house. Close to a decade of legal wrangles have taken place, with Serrano stating that the

owners of the building had not lived up to their obligations to do something about the condition that it has got into. No mention was made of how much it would cost Torrevieja council to take over the historical structure.

Fruity Interception Seven orange rustlers from the Murcia region were caught in the act stealing the fruit from an Orihuela area farm. The gang included a woman and a child and came from Cabezo de Torres and El Palmar, and aroused the suspicion of a passer-by, who noticed four strange cars parked by a fruit orchard at La Matanza. The man called the local police who marshalled 14 officers to create a perimeter around the farm, and found the four vehicles parked up outside a fence, which had a hole made in it. The gang were arrested and 87 large bags of

oranges, each with 14 kilos in them, were recovered from their cars.

Two people who fled the area, were also subsequently arrested.

blaze, which produced a large amount of black smoke.

Iberdrola workers then went to the site to restore power to the apartments.

A motorist had to be freed from his car on Tuesday morning when he was driving through San Miguel de Salinas on the CV-95 road. The man suffered injuries to his leg and left side, whilst his female passenger suffered bruising, and after the car had gone off the road. The incident happened at around 10.00 am, with Torrevieja fire crews attending the scene.

Balcony Death

A British university student passed away after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at a Mallorca flat following a St Patrick's Day party. James Walton is thought to have died instantly after he

plunged head-first onto a pavement below an apartment block early Sunday morning. The 23-year-old was studying languages at Sheffield University and on a

placement year on the island at the time of his death. Londoner James had been in Palma since last September and was working as a global loyalty intern at Melia Hotels International.

Taxing Concerns

Fakers Convicted

A British couple who demanded thousands of pounds in compensation after claiming they fell ill on a Costa Blanca holiday were caught out – after posting selfies of themselves cavorting by the pool. Chelsea Devine, 21, and Jamie Melling, 22, from Liverpool, claimed food and drink at their Benidorm hotel had left them feeling ill for weeks. But a judge found them ‘fundamentally dishonest’ and ordered them to pay holiday operator Tui

£15,000 – a record amount for costs awarded against a fraudulent claim of holiday sickness. Liverpool County Court heard that the pair posted photographs on social media of their ten-day allinclusive stay at the Levante Beach Apartments in Benidorm in September 2015. The pictures showed them smiling and happy in their room and swimming in the pool. But in May 2016, they submitted identical claims, each demanding

£2,500 in compensation. Their conviction is the latest in a series of successful prosecutions against British holiday scammers who have been trying to rip off tour companies and Spanish hotel owners, after making false accusations. 18 months ago authorities in Benidorm and the Balaeric Islands drew attention to the fact that “lawyers” were openly touting for business in encouraging British tourists to “get their holidays paid for”, by making a bogus food poisoning claim.

Butano Boost

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been hit with a tax bombshell after trying to cut a deal with tax authorities, only for them to strike back with a massive counter-offer. The striker is said to have offered authorities a €3.8m deal over image rights - only

for them to them to say 'no' and want a massive €25.6m instead. Reports suggest that Ronaldo’s lawyers have failed in an attempt to halt criminal proceedings over his alleged tax evasion, which technically threatens the footballer with a jail term if

found guilty.. The 33-year-old was accused by prosecutors in June of not declaring €14.8m of image rights cash. To sort it out his representatives offered the €3.8m settlement - plus an admission of wrong doing only to be flatly refused.

Orange butano gas bottles went down in price on Tuesday by five percent, dropping to €13.96 from the current €14.68. This is due to a fall in the cost of the raw material, cheaper transport and the strengthening of the euro.

This first price fall of the year has come after many months of increases – 1.6% in January and 2.1% in November, with sharp hikes in summer last year of up to 5% in each cost review. Only orange butane bottles are affected by the

State-regulated prices; the lighter-weight, silvercoloured bottles on sale in supermarkets and petrol stations vary according to location and throughout the year, as their providers have the right to set their own prices.

Madrid Mayhem

Six people were arrested during a Madrid protest last Thursday over the death of a Senegalese street vendor, with 10 police officers reported as injured. The clashes on Thursday evening in Lavapies, a district in the centre of the capital with a large immigrant population, saw angry protesters set fire to dustbins and motorbikes, and throw stones at riot police. A police spokesman said six people had been arrest-

ed, including a minor and a woman. He added 10 police officers were injured in the unrest, while emergency services said four people had been slightly hurt. Demonstrators said they were protesting in support of Mame Mbaye, who was a street vendor in his mid-thirties from Senegal, who arrived in Spain by boat 12 years ago. Emergency services said he was found unconscious

on a street in Lavapies by police on patrol. "They were busy trying to revive him" when emergency workers arrived, a spokeswoman said. However he died of cardiac arrest. She did not know what had happened to Mbaye before he collapsed, but several other street vendors who were with him said he had been chased by police from the central Puerta del Sol square.

Catalan Suggestion

Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont says a majority of Catalans might support Swiss-style federal autonomy rather than full independence. Mr Puigdemont's remarks in Geneva at the weekend appear to suggest a departure from his previous support for full independence. The ex-president fled to Belgium after Catalunya's declaration of independence after a disputed vote last October. The restive region remains under direct rule from Madrid, imposed after

the stand-off. This is despite elections being held in December, with a majority of seats won by pro-independence parties. Mr Puigdemont is wanted in Spain on charges of rebellion and sedition. Four other Catalan leaders, including the former vice-president, Oriol Junqueras, remain in prison for their part in October's independence vote. Catalunya’s regional government remains on hold, as Madrid refuses to free the man nominated to lead the

regional administration from prison. Mr Puigdemont, who was speaking at an international human rights film festival in Geneva, suggested independence might not be the only option. "Maybe, (among other ways of doing things), the Swiss model is the most efficient and attractive," he said. Switzerland has a highly decentralised government, with regional governments, known as cantons, who have a significant amount of power.

Super Speedster

A 39-year-old driver whizzed around the Madrid area doing 300 kilometres an hour in an Audi R8 supercar (pictured) on a motorway, and videoed himself behind the wheel, showing his dashboard and speedometer lighting up with the speed. He was involved in a race with another motorist, who the Guardia Civil are still looking for, after the biggest logged speed infringement

on a Spanish road. The 39-year-old Spaniard has been told he could face a six-year driving ban and two-year prison sentence if convicted of dangerous driving, though as it is a first offence, he will not have to serve jail time. The speedster was pulled over on the M50 motorway near Boadilla del Monte in the Madrid region, with the Guardia describing his driving as verging on suicidal.

Remains Returned

The remains of Salvador Dali, exhumed last summer to test a psychic's claims she was his daughter, were finally re-buried last week in his museum in north-eastern Spain. The remains were put back in the tomb of the surrealist artist at the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueras in the presence of a solicitor and forensic pathologist, his foundation said. A court had ordered Dali's exhumation to settle a paternity suit lodged by Pilar Abel. Abel, who long worked as a psychic in Cataunya,

claimed to be the daughter of the artist known as much for his paintings as his trademark moustache, which -because the corpse was embalmed -- the exhumation revealed remained in its "ten past ten" position. But DNA samples from Dali's skin nail and bones proved she was not his biological daughter, and she was ordered to pay for the costs of the exhumation. Abel had claimed her mother had a relationship with the artist when she worked in Cadaques, a picturesque port where the painter lived for years.

Twitter Twit

A teenage girl hanging from a concrete beam eight floors up so her friend could take a photo of her for Twitter, had to be rescued from a Barcelona block of flats. The 14-year-old had climbed onto the roof terrace of the building in the Eixample area of the city, and hung by her hands from a metal bar on the outer wall for a 'selfie', which her friend took using her mobile phone. But when she wanted to get back onto the roof, she did not have the strength to

do so. She dropped down onto a cornice just below, eight storeys above the ground and barely two feet wide. Her friend called emergency services, and the police managed to lift her onto the roof by her hands, although she had by that stage suffered a panic attack. Paramedics treated her for anxiety and for minor scrape marks on her arms, with her parents then arriving to take her home, and probably to offer a few choice words.

Sagrada Stunt

A British YouTube daredevil who filmed himself climbing the Severn Bridge and Blackpool's Big One rollercoaster has added another famous site to his bucket list, namely Barcelona's Sagrada Familia. Footage of Ally Law scaling the Antoni Gaudi-designed temple with friends, despite a high-level terror alert, has already been viewed more than 460,000 times online. The stunt has also prompted an internal investigation by site managers as well as a police probe into how the men managed to breach security and get away without being caught. The video Ally posted on his YouTube

channel showed himself and two of his friends inside the Sagrada Familia enclosure for nine minutes, being able to outsmart and outrun security guards who spotted them as they scaled metal scaffolding around the temple before having to abort their climb to avoid arrest. Sagrada Familia's head of security Marc Martinez admitted in a radio interview 'the speed of reaction and the number of security people was not sufficient' and said security measures were now being reviewed. It took police 40 minutes to arrive at the scene, however, Ally and his colleagues were long gone.

Hostage Situation

Police on Monday freed the wife of Mali's honorary consul in Barcelona after a man from the African country seeking to be allowed out of Spain held her hostage for five hours. A spokeswoman from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan equivalent of the Guardia Civil, said that they

received an alert mid-afternoon "that a woman was being held against her will inside Mali's consulate in Barcelona." Officers went to the building and started negotiating with the Malian man, whose identity was not revealed. "He wanted police to give him the necessary papers to

be able to leave Spain," a national police spokesman said, adding the man had committed minor offences. After negotiating with the man, whom the police spokesman described as "calm" and unarmed, officers moved in, freeing the consul's wife and detaining him.

ITV Changes New rules on the annual ITV road test for vehicles will come into force in May, aimed at improving safety on the country’s roads. The law will kick on May 2nd, and means that ITV stations (Torrevieja centre pictured) will be equipped with tools that detect emissions fraud or even software installed which masks emission output. Emissions are already measured at ITV stations in most of Spain's regions, including Valencia, and excessively-high readings can lead to a fail. More exhaustive checks will be carried out through new equipment at ITV stations geared towards the more electronic nature of modern cars. Motorists will be able to have their ITV tests carried out up to a month early, without affecting their annual expiry date. At present, windscreen stickers show the year and the month when an ITV is due – if January is marked, for example, the owner must have passed the test before February 1st or the car is not allowed out on the road. But new rules would allow them to have the test carried out from December 1st to

January 31st in this case. Additionally, if a car does not pass its first ITV inspection, the owner or main driver will have the right to go to any other ITV centre in Spain – not just in the same region, as the law stands at present – for a retest and, provided this is within a month of the first test, this will be free of charge. Until the new law in May, drivers were required to return to the same test centre within a month after fixing the problems which caused the failure. ITV tests will become more European from May – the new Royal Decree allows compulsory inspections from other EU member States, such as the MOT in the UK, to be formally recognised in Spain or in any other of the 28 countries in the bloc, which will help with reregistering a non-Spanish car on Spanish plates. The main aim of the new ITV structure is to aim for the European Union's target of zero fatal accidents by the year 2050. This ambitious programme reflects data from ITV centres across Spain, which show that in 2011 – the most recent year for which

information is available – test centres prevented 170 roadcrash deaths, 11,000 injuries and 11,000 accidents in general. The report, by the Duke of Santomauro Motor Vehicle Road Safety Institute (ISVA), shows that if the 20% of vehicles on Spain's roads whose owners did not bother with an ITV had undergone and passed the mandatory test, a total of 7,100 accidents, 7,000 injuries and 110 deaths could have been prevented just in 2011. As well as responding to new technology, greater awareness about air pollution and accident-

Godfather Arrests

reduction measures, the Spanish Association of ITV Administration and Cooperation Entities (AECAITV) says the updated requirements of the test are aimed at meeting 'increasing demand' from vehicle-users. “Society is now expecting ITV tests to check their active and passive safety features are in correct working order, and that they are not duped with fraudulent techniques by manufacturers which harm people's health,” the AECA-ITV reveals. “The new regulations come in answer to popular demand for improved road safety and care of the environment.”

Spanish and Portuguese police have arrested ten people and seized around 2.5 tonnes of cocaine sealed in bricks with logos of The Godfather film stamped on them. Police seized two tonnes of cocaine at a warehouse in Lisbon and around half a tonne hidden as it was being transported by car just across the border in the province of Badajoz. The cocaine was inside vacuum-sealed bricks and contained about one kilo each. The bricks were

11

decorated with the logos for Rolls-Royce and Mini vehicles, as well as the logo for 1972 film "The Godfather" with an image of its star, Marlon Brando. Police arrested ten people, mainly Colombians and Spanish nationals, who were caught during a police road stop transporting the cocaine hidden inside false bottoms of four vehicles, Spain's narcotics police chief, Antonio Duarte, said. The smuggling ring was based in Madrid and it was "completely broken up" by the operation, he added.

SAVER RATES STILL NOT LIKELY TO KEEP PACE WITH INFLATION

By Richard Samuels DipPFS, International Financial Adviser, Blacktower Financial Management (International) Ltd. In the UK, the base rate is the interest rate set by the Bank of England for lending to other banks. It is used as the benchmark for interest rates generally, including those available to savers from banks and building societies.

advantage of a bond to invest your money in mutual funds for the medium to long term – which is likely to get better returns in comparison to saver rates from the banks. If you would like more information on the above or if you would like advice on any of the issues, you can contact me on richard.samuels@blacktowerfm.com.

The latest decision will have been yesterday, and it was expected that the BoE would hold at the current rate of 0.5% for the moment. Working from the BoE’s comments earlier this year, I think there will be a rise in the bank's base rate from 0.5% to 0.75% in May, with another one likely to be expected to follow in the autumn. However, the overall predicted outlook for 2018 seems fairly split in terms of opinion. When the Financial Times annually surveyed economists, almost a fifth predicted there would be no more increase in the UK interest rates – two fifths suspect it will rise by at least 0.5 percentage points. Of course, with the possibility of significant “wins” and “losses” depending on where you stand financially or what you plan to do. The winners could include 45 million savers, who have already seen interest rates begin to tick up after the previous rise in November. Even those planning on buying an annuity to finance their retirement are also likely to benefit, but at least four million households with variable or tracker rate mortgages are likely to see their payments increase once again – which is not unfamiliar with past trends. Since the beginning of the banking crisis ten years ago – interest rates in the UK have dropped from 5.75% in July 2007 to the current record low of 0.25% in August 2016.During the 1980s and 90s the base rate was regularly into double figures. During Margaret Thatcher’s administration, mainly down to the government's decision to target and control inflation, interest rates never fell below around 7.4% and peaked at close to 15%. Times have changed since then, as interest rates have not been above 6% since the turn of the millennium. As for the EU, its monetary policy meeting was held on 8 March, with the European Central Bank (ECB) deciding to keep interest rates unchanged, a decision widely expected by market analysts. The main refinancing rate remains at 0.00%, and the marginal lending rate and deposit facility rate at 0.25%

and minus 0.40%, respectively. As mentioned previously, positive saving rates should begin to rise in anticipation of any rise in May. However, after last November's rate increase, banks were slow to pass it on, or they typically passed on a fraction of the full increase to savers. According to the Bank of England, returns on cash Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) actually fell last December - but savers could expect returns of 1.47% this coming October. With inflation in the UK rising, it is unlikely savers will gain in “real terms” from fixed-rate savings accounts. Because of this more investors are turning to insurance-based products which use mutual funds to achieve inflation-beating returns. Using a Stocks and Shares ISA would be a good way to achieve tax-efficient returns in the UK. Unfortunately, expats resident in Spain are not allowed to open new ISAs or add to existing ones asnon-UK tax residents. The good news is, expat investors can take advantage of a similar wrapper known as a Spanish compliant bond. With a Spanish compliant bond, funds are held in Sterling or Euros outside of Spain. Ask most people to describe a cat and most likely you'll hear words like mysterious, stand-offish, composed, regal – and independent. Cats give the impression that they do not need us. They have a quiet composure and dignity that dogs rarely display. And they are not obedient like dogs – we usually can't teach them to fetch the paper or play dead. When they learn, they often learn things on their own. The Nature of Cats The notion that cats are independent has persisted for centuries. Perhaps this is because cats are solitary predators, unlike dogs who hunt within the pack. Dogs are team players, and their survival depends on it. But the cat must hunt alone; in fact, feline hunting methods of stalking, hiding, and pouncing would not be successful if performed as a group tactic. Although cats can live in groups, they don't actually need to. Cats can be highly social animals. When provided with two "squares" and the comforts of home, they have no need to compete for these basic necessities and harmonious living can prevail. But most people don't see this "sociability" because a cat's signs of affection are so subtle – no jumping and face-licking here – that we often overlook them. We just don't notice how excited they are when they touch us with a nose, blink their eyes slowly, or solicitously raise their tail. A Royal Reputation

Someone once said that thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods – and they've never forgotten this. So if your cat acts like a snob, he's probably remembering his exalted place in history. The cat family can trace their genealogy back to ancient Cyprus and Egypt. Egyptians held cats in such high regard that laws were created to protect them. During the reign of the Pharaohs, it was considered a capital crime to kill or injure a cat, even by accident. If a house caught fire, it was cats first, humans second. If a cat were to die of natural causes the entire household went into elaborate mourning with chanting and pounding of chests as an outward sign of grief. From 1000 to 350 BC, however, cats were also seen as deities, and worshipped as such. True to the cat's exalted status, a religious order of cat worship developed that lasted for more than 2,000 years. The cat goddess Bastet, with the body of a woman and the head of a cat, became one of the most revered figures of worship. The Family Cat As any cat fancier will tell you, cats do not have owners; they have caretakers whom they allow to live with them. However, although a socialised cat has the ability to care for himself, he does rely on the family for affection, mental stimulation, and for good health. And the more you learn about his behaviour – his purring and rubbing against you – the more you will realize that he not as "independent" as you thought.

Pension Protests

Thousands of people took part in protests across the country on Saturday to demand better pensions as unions accused the government of seeking to privatise retirement benefits. Pensioners braved rain and snow showers as they poured onto the streets of the capital and Barcelona, as well as locally in Alicante, Elche and Torrevieja, to vent their anger at Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and the ruling Partido Popular.

"Rajoy, thief, you are stealing my pension," read one placard, while other slogans accused the government of wantonly ramping down pension benefits. Pensioners are fuming after seeing their benefits rise by an annual 0.25 in recent years, well below an official inflation rate of 1.2 percent as of late 2017. The unrest among the elderly is of concern to Rajoy's Partido Popular, which traditionally enjoys their support.

Spain's largest trade union the CCOO has accused the government of "favouring private pension to the detriment" of the state equivalent. Heading a minority administration as his party looks to put together a budget in the coming weeks, Rajoy pledged last week to target modest increases for the most modest pensions although he has been encouraging people to invest in private plans.

Electric Shocker

Electricity company board Endesa has been fined 30 thousand euro for signing up seven customers without their knowledge or permission by using deception. Consumer watchdogs FACUA, OCU and CECU have said they are 'not surprised', as they 'regularly' receive reports from householders who have been approached by salespersons either on the doorstep or by telephone. The usual technique is to ask the customer if they want to save money on their electricity bills, and asking them for a copy of their latest statement from their usual provider to show them where they can then cut costs. “No utility board will send someone to check a bill that they have sent themselves,” the OCU warns. Some householders are told the relatively new company will 'scrap their stand-

ing charges', which is impossible, because these are dictated by the State and not the firm – the only difference, the OCU says, is that these fees are not broken down separately in bills from non-State providers. Other salespersons have told householders they will pay a flat fee every month for their power, avoiding fluctuations, but in practice bills usually rise and many customers have found their low-income discount has disappeared as a result. Normally, doorstep salespersons scan a copy of the householder's bill on their tablets, which is enough to get to their name, address and national ID number, although sometimes they also scan copies of the person's ID card in addition. Many customers have said that after the salesperson did this, they later received a letter 'confirming' the transfer to the new elec-

tricity board, even though they had not knowingly given their permission. Some sellers gain access to a person's home by claiming they have come to repair the electricity meter or, when asked via the intercom system who they are, simply say 'the electrics', leading the occupant to believe they are letting in someone who is merely reading their meter. Householders have reported pressure to sign on the dotted line on the doorstep or to give their permission immediately during the initial sales call, being told they will lose a series of special discounts if they do not. Customers have the right to freely elect their electricity supplier, and the supplier must, in turn, comply with all contract conditions and place the power of decisionmaking in the customer's hands.

Quick Blaze Torrevieja firefighters put out a blaze on Wednesday afternoon that started in a disused unit on the city’s Casagrande industrial estate. Three vehicles went to the scene to extinguish the fire which destroyed mattresses, furniture and other items. Nobody was inside in the building at the time and the fire crews took just 50 minutes to quell the blaze.

Wolf Call

Demonstrators gathered in Madrid on Sunday calling for the lberian Wolf to be protected, as it is an endangered species unique to Spain and Portugal. Ecologists in Action, the WWF, European Alliance for Wolf Conservation and the group Lobo Marley ('Marley the Wolf') were behind the march, which was headed up by Rocco, a domesticated wolf walking on a lead, complete with his 'entourage' of another seven dogs who are part-wolf. Around 3,000 people clamoured for the Iberian

Wolf to be included in Spain's list of specially-protected species throughout the whole of the country. They marched from Atocha station to the central Puerta del Sol square. Wildlife experts have said that Iberian Wolves, in the wild, do not need to be a threat to sheep, meaning they have no need to be shot by farmers if they take the right measures. Last year, however, a quota was even set in parts of northern and north-western Spain for the maximum number of wolves allowed to

be hunted, despite their being endangered. If wolves manage to cross over the borders into France or Portugal, however, they are safe, because both countries ban anyone from killing or maiming them. They are protected across the whole of Europe, except in a small part of Greece and to the north of the Duero river in Spain, by the directive known as 'Habitat', explained WWF-s Luis Suárez. “This shows that the population can be controlled and managed in accordance with the law,” he says.

Daya Nueva Fire

Ten thousand square metres of scrub land were burnt and a small greenhouse was raised to the ground in the Daya Nueva area, after a fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews from Almoradi and Orihuela dealt with the incident, which happened close to the road that links Almoradi to Dolores. No official cause for the blaze has been declared,

15

but early indications suggest that it have come from some coal that was being used in a controlled burning. The firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a second greenhouse.

Cycling Can Keep You Young In Wide-Ranging Ways, Study Finds Exercises like cycling can hold back the effects of ageing and keep people young in profound ways, a new study has found. Activities like regularly riding a bike appear to undo the assumption that we get more frail as we get older, the authors of the new research claim. The studies compared data on amateur cyclists with healthy adults that did not regularly exercise. It found that those who were exercising seemed to be preserving many parts of their health. The findings showed that the cyclists preserved muscle mass and strength with age while maintaining stable levels of body fat and cholesterol. In men, testosterone levels remained high. More surprisingly, the antiageing effects of cycling appeared to extend to the immune system. An organ called the thymus,

which makes immune cells called T-cells normally starts to shrink from the age of 20. But the thymuses of older cyclists were found to be generating as many T-cells as those of young individuals.

Professor Janet Lord, director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham, said: "Hippocrates in 400 BC said that exercise is man's best medicine, but his message

has been lost over time and we are an increasingly sedentary society. "However, importantly, our findings debunk the assumption that ageing automatically makes us more frail.

"Our research means we now have strong evidence that encouraging people to commit to regular exercise throughout their lives is a viable solution to the problem that we are living longer but not healthier."

Male cyclists taking part in the study had to be able to cycle 100km in under 6.5 hours while women had to cover 60km in 5.5 hours. The non-exercising group consisted of 75 healthy people aged 57 to 80, and 55 young adults aged 20 to 36. Professor Stephen Harridge, director of the Centre of Human & Aerospace Physiological Sciences at King's College London, said: "The findings emphasise the fact that the cyclists do not exercise because they are healthy, but that they are healthy because they have been exercising for such a large proportion of their lives. "Their bodies have been allowed to age optimally, free from the problems usually caused by inactivity. Remove the activity and their health would likely deteriorate." The research is outlined in two papers published in the journal Aging Cell.

Smokeless cigs not as harmless as claimed The new “heat not burn” smokeless cigarette devices are not as harmless as their manufacturer claims, according to a new study. iQOS – which stands for “I quit original smoking” – is made by Philip Morris

International, best known as the manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes. PMI, the biggest tobacco company in the world, says its future is “smoke-free”, and it is investing in heated tobacco products, such as iQOS,

and e-cigarettes, both of which it says are safer options. iQOS devices are available in UK shops, and they have taken off dramatically in Japan, where they are said to have secured over 10% of

the tobacco market. They are battery-operated devices into which is inserted a “heat stick” containing a tobacco plug. The heat produces a vapour rather than harmful smoke. Philip Morris has published results of its own trials into the effects of the device but, say the authors of the study, from the University of California, “these studies appeared in a journal that may have a deficient review process, emphasising the need for independent evaluation of the iQOS”. The new research, published in the journal Tobacco Control, found that users speed up their “puff rate” in order to inhale more nicotine because the heat stick lasts for just six minutes, after which the device shuts off and needs to be recharged. That means they may potentially breathe in large amounts of vapour.

Although the heat stick did not produce a flame, they also found that the tobacco plug charred as a result of pyrolysis: thermal decomposition in the absence of oxygen. Charring was more extensive when thorough cleaning was not carried out after the use of each heat stick, suggesting that build-up of debris and fluid increases

pyrolytic temperatures, say the researchers. “iQOS is not strictly a ‘heat not burn’ tobacco product,” they write. “This study has shown that the iQOS system may not be as harm free as claimed, and also emphasises the urgent need for further safety testing as the popularity and user base of this product is growing rapidly.”

Balearic island of s’Espalmador sold to private bidder for 18 million euro Rosy, confirmed s’Espalmador had been sold after nearly three years on the market. The spokesperson told Spain’s Efe news agency the new owners had bought it for their own use and were fully aware of regulations that protect it as part of the Ses Salines natural park. The island was bought by the Cinnamonds’ grandfather for the equivalent of €252 in 1932. Although the family dropped the asking price from €24m to €18m, it proved too expensive for the Formentera authorities. “Like

most

people

on

Formentera, we would have preferred the local government to have reached an agreement to buy it using state funds,” Silvia Tur, a local politician, told Efe. She also stressed that s’Espalmador was subject to strict protection laws that would have to be observed. The island, which is under two miles (3km) long and half a mile (800 metres) wide, is a popular mooring place for yachts. In summer, many boats stop off so people can explore s’Espalmador and take one of its famous natural mud baths. It remains to be seen what attitude the new owners will take to the thousands of annual visitors.

A tiny Balearic island that lies between Ibiza and Formentera and boasts two houses, a chapel and a watchtower has been sold to a private bidder for €18m (£16m).

The island was listed with an estate agent specialising in private islands. Its advertisement noted that s’Espalmador has a “remarkable location that few other private islands of this calibre” can match.

S’Espalmador, which occupies 137 hectares and can be reached on foot from Formentera at low tide, has been snapped up by a family from Luxembourg despite efforts to sell it to the Formentera government.

“It’s easy to enjoy the best of Ibiza from s’Espalmador, for example, the happening beach clubs on Ibiza’s Ses Salines beach, a short boat ride away, or the nightclubs of Ibiza town,” the blurb said. “And after the buzz of Ibiza, s’Espalmador is the perfect sanctuary to retreat to, somewhere to get away from it all ..and unwind in beautiful surroundings, with zero stress.”

A representative for the island’s previous owners, the Catalan architect Norman Cinnamond and his sister

Coconut Quinoa & Chia Porridge

Ingredients For the porridge 175g quinoa ½ vanilla pod, split and seeds scraped out, or ½ tsp vanilla extract 15g creamed coconut 4 tbsp chia seeds 125g coconut yogurt For the topping 250g coconut yogurt 560g mixed summer berries, such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries 4 tbsp flaked almonds (optional)

Method Activate the quinoa by soaking overnight in cold water. The next day, drain and rinse the quinoa through a fine sieve (the grains are so small that they will wash through a coarse one). Tip the quinoa into a pan and add the vanilla, creamed coconut and 600ml water. Cover the pan and simmer for 20 mins. Stir in the chia with another 300ml water and cook gently for 3 mins more. Stir in the pot of

coconut yogurt. Spoon half the porridge into a bowl for another day. Will keep for 2 days covered in the fridge. Serve the remaining porridge topped with another pot of yogurt, the berries and almonds, if you like. To have the porridge another day, tip into a pan and reheat gently, with milk or water. Top with fruit - for instance, orange slices and pomegranate seeds. Prep: 10 Mins Cook: 25 Mins serves: 4

Salt Cod Tortilla

Ingredients 4 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, finely sliced 300g waxy potatoes, peeled and sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 8 eggs, lightly beaten 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley, plus extra to serve 300g salt cod, soaked and drained Method Heat half the oil in a frying pan, and sauté the onion over a medium heat until soft and pale gold – this will take about 8 mins. Remove from the pan, set aside, and add the potatoes to the pan. Cook until they are tender but not

falling apart, carefully turning every so often. Cover the pan some of the time to help the slices cook through. Add the onions back to the pan along with the garlic and cook for another 4 mins. Tip into a bowl with the eggs, parsley and some seasoning and mix together. Leave to sit for half an hour. Meanwhile, put the cod in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring up to a simmer. Remove from the heat, cover and leave for 10 mins. Drain, leave to cool and remove the skin and any bones. Break into large flakes and add to the potato and egg mixture. Heat the rest of the oil in a

non-stick frying pan. Pour in the tortilla mix and cook over a medium-low heat until it is just set and coming away from the sides of the pan. You might need to cover it to help the centre set. Be careful not to overcook it. Put a spatula underneath the tortilla every so often to make sure it isn’t sticking. Slide the tortilla onto a plate, then put the pan on top and flip the tortilla into it, uncooked side-down. Cook over a low heat until golden, or grill until just set. Leave to cool a little before serving. Prep: 30 Mins Cook: 40 Mins Serves: 4

.com Semana Santa – Spain’s Holy Week Semana Santa, or Holy Week is perhaps the most important fiesta of the whole year and definitely the most religious and solemn, not only in Torrevieja but throughout the whole of Spain and some Latin American countries. Semana

Santa consists of a week of religious processions, which mainly take place late in the evening, where huge, ornate floats or “pasos”, depicting various scenes of the life of Jesus, are carried through the streets.

Again, as with all the major fiestas, that are celebrated in Torrevieja, thousands of “torrevejenses” and residents of other nationalities, line the main streets where the procession will pass, to take part in this emotive and deeply religious fiesta. Semana Santa begins with the procession of Palm Sunday and culminates after a whole week of processions on Easter Sunday. In Torrevieja, there are processions on each night of the week in between. The groups of people that carry the “pasos” are called “costaleros” and the collective name for these groups of “costaleros” are “cofradías”. Each “cofradía” is in charge of carrying its own “paso”, which incidentally is very heavy. Around 50 or 60 “costaleros” are generally required to carry each “paso” and the “pasos” are lifted into the air and rested on the shoulders of the “costaleros”, where they stay as they are proudly carried through the streets. Each “paso” depicts a different scene from Jesus’ life, such as the crucifixion and the resurrection. The “pasos” are made of wood and resemble coffins in shape. On top they carry life size figures and are adorned with hundreds of flowers and candles or lamps. A lot of hard work, time and money have gone into making the floats and maintaining their exquisite condition. The processions are well worth seeing in Torrevieja, even if you are not religious. There is an electric atmosphere and it would be hard not to get caught up in the event or not to be impressed by solemnity and seriousness of the participants. The main procession that has the highest number of visitors is the procession on Good Friday, where all of the “cofradías” march together. Therefore, if you miss any of the preceding processions, you can manage to see all of them on this day. Another popular procession not to miss takes place on Thursday. This procession is called the “Solemn Procession of Silence”, whereby the streetlights are turned off, leaving the procession area of Torrevieja in complete darkness, and the “pasos” are solemnly marched through the town only to the sound of a beating drum.

The processions usually start at 22.00h from the main church in Torrevieja, the Inmaculada Concepción, and last for around an hour or longer, especially if several “cofradías” are marching together. Various marching brass bands and drums, made up from local musicians and musical groups from Torrevieja, accompany the “pasos”, as they make their way through the main streets. Each “paso” is preceded by a leading figure, who carries a large banner and symbol of their “cofradía”. He is usually accompanied by three or four elegantly dressed women in mourning clothes. Following them are the penitents, who are dressed in colourful, shiny robes and pointed hats and masks. Many of the penitents are local children who hand out sweets to members of the crowd. Next, the “paso” is slowly carried, due to the heavy weight, by the “costaleros”, much to the delight of the crowd, who all applause and cheer enthusiastically as they pass, marching in time to the beat of the drums. Due to the sheer weight of the “pasos”, the “costaleros” have to walk in a way, which makes it look as if they are swaying. They also have to stop every so often in order to catch their breath and rest before they carry on. The Semana Santa processions of Torrevieja have now made history in the whole of Spain, as in 2005, the first ever “cofradía” made up of non-Spaniards was allowed to carry one of the “pasos”. This certain “paso” is the largest and heaviest of them all, which beforehand was paraded on wheels. It depicts Jesus praying in the Garden of Olives, accompanied by three disciples and an angel and it weighs around 1,500 kilos and is 14 metres long. The “cofradía” in charge of carrying this elaborate work or art is made up of over 70 non-Spanish residents, mainly retired British ex-pats, a number of Scandinavians and a few members of other nationalities. Most of them are retired and are over 60 years of age.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

With Call The Midwife having ended, ITV have nipped in with a double dose of drama for a feelgood Sunday mid-evening with the return of The Durrells and The Good Karma Hospital which whizz us off to Corfu and India (Sri Lanka really, but who cares?). Besides the traditional Greek surroundings, the appeal of the Durrell family is their sheer eccentricity and the weird things they get up to, as reflected in an excellent script from Simon (Men Behaving Badly) Nye and the lovely performances right across the cast led by Keeley Hawes. The season three opener sees Louisa Durrell give up any hopes of romance (really!) whilst one of her sons Leslie decides to get three girlfriends and keep them on the go at once. Of course you knew what was going to happen as they all end up meeting at the Durrell home, and Leslie has to end up picking just one. The Durrells always has a little edge about it (the odd naughty word here and there), but nothing to push

Feel-Good Sunday Delivers

out of the realm of excellent family entertainment, and as I happen to know Corfu inside out, there’s my personal bonus of trying to recognise all the locations. It’s all good clean fun and a ratings winner for ITV. The Good Karma Hospital returned for a second season in a neat bit of scheduling following on straight from The Durrells, as we follow Dr. Ruby Walker’s first night shift in charge of the hospital, which of course sees drama with a power

cut and her opening up a patient which she had operated on earlier in the day. The Sri Lanka shoot doubles up as India in this good looking production and though there isn’t the level of wit and surprise in the script that The Durrells give us, you can’t help liking The Good Karma Hospital and everything that it brings us, including an interesting tease about Ruby’s estranged father just happening to be in India and reading about her achieve-

ments. Streaming service Hulu is trying to take on the big boys of Netflix and Amazon, and they certainly hit the jackpot last year with a little series called The Handmaid’s Tale, which returns soon for a new run on Channel Four. I recommend in the strongest terms a 10-part “limited” series from Hulu called The Looming Tower, starring Jeff Daniels as an FBI counterterrorism agent based in New Year who ends up in a

running battle with the CIA over how best to deal with the ever increasing terrorist threat. This is like the drama Homeland, but only true, as the tower referred to in the title is in reference to 9/11, as Daniels believes that leading up to that fateful September morning in 2001, the CIA didn’t take the right actions against Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in various incidents. My description may sound dry, but just watch

this drama. It is utterly gripping (I watched five episodes on the bounce), with Daniels and a fine troupe of character actors having some wonderful and verbally fruity exchanges. Based on the book of the same name, The Looming Tower is an exceptional piece of drama that I commend you to watch without any hesitation. Two many great TV names are leaving us at the moment, and in case this one slipped past you, let me mention that Katie Boyle died this week at the age of 91. An actress and then BBC TV announcer, she broadened out into presentation and appearing as a guest on countless shows in the sixties and seventies. Notably, she hosted four Eurovision Song Contests between 1960 and 1974, including that Abba victory in Brighton. Katie’s fluency in languages and her calmness made her a great host, and for a certain generation like me, I will never forget her doing that plus her personal pension plan of doing the Camay soap adverts for a couple of decades!

RAF at 100 with Ewan and Colin McGregor

The Boat Race

Saturday - BBC One On the 80th anniversary of The Boat Race on the BBC, Clare Balding presents live coverage from the banks of the River Thames, as Oxford and Cambridge universities

meet for one of the most iconic events in the British sporting calendar. Clare is joined by Double Olympic Gold Medallist Helen Glover and Olympic Champion Dame Katherine Grainger.

Last year Oxford won the 163rd men’s race while Cambridge women claimed victory in their 72nd meeting. Commentary is from Andrew Cotter.

Film - Everest

Sunday - BBC One The actor and his former pilot brother present a celebration of the Royal Air Force's centenary, taking to the skies in iconic planes

from the First World War to the present day. They also meet service personnel from throughout the RAF's history, including a veteran of the Battle of Britain, former female members of the Air

Transport Auxiliary, crew members who had the responsibility of dropping the atom bomb, modern-day Typhoon fighter crews, and the last pilot to be involved in a dogfight.

Reggie Yates: Searching for Grenfell's Lost Lives Sunday - BBC Two

Saturday - Channel 4 On the morning of May 10, 1996, climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin) from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the sum-

mit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man.

Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.

The presenter meets families and friends of people who died in the Grenfell fire, to gain a greater understanding of the disaster's victims as people and as members of a community that is still recovering. Reggie discovers the stories of a man who ran back into the tower to save his family, a woman who has come to Britain from the Philippines seeking answers concerning her aunt's death, a Syrian man who came to Britain to

start a new life after having escaped war in his home

country, and one of the 18 children to die in the blaze.

Dear Sir, I have recently accidentally removed my Windows 10 from my computer whilst trying to update to the latest version suggested as necessary by Microsoft for security. Can I obtain the latest version of Windows 10 disc and install? Regards, Peter

Hi Peter, Yes, you can download a tool that will enable you to create (by USB stick or DVD) the installation media for Windows 10. If you visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10, you will see the instructions. I warn you to be very careful, especially if you have data on the computer that is important to you – I would be recommending employing an expert to help you get your computer working again as they will have the knowledge to secure your data before you start to install Windows again.

Hi Richard, My Samsung netbook is stuck. On screen it says: "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 1 of 4" I have tried Alt Control Delete, but with no change.

Hi Janet, When you say "stuck" how long has it been sitting there? Ideally, we wouldn’t want to turn off the computer if it were installing updates, but if it’s been there for "hours" then you may not have any choice. Updates can sometimes take a very long time to install so it's best to be patient. However, if you do think that it has crashed and you need to turn it off, then you can press and hold the on/off button for around 5 seconds and your laptop will turn off.

VOLKSWAGEN TO FOCUS ON PRODUCTION BASED VEHICLES IN CUSTOMER SPORT Production-based vehicles take centre stage in customer sport strategy

Wolfsburg Volkswagen Motorsport will focus even more on production-based racing in the future. With the hugely successful Golf GTI TCR and the new Polo GTI R5, Volkswagen is able to offer its customers attractive cars for circuit racing and rallying. The long-term commitment as engine manufacturer in Formula 3, which has yielded a host of international stars, will end in 2018. “In the future, we will place even greater emphasis on Volkswagen products. The Golf GTI TCR is already an important ambassador for the brand in many racing series around the world, and we are pursuing the same goal with the new Polo GTI R5,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “Both cars are not only attractive propositions for professional customer teams, but also represent top-class cars for talented youngsters. This way, we are also able to continue our long-term philosophy of offering youth opportunities. The many national, regional and international series, in which the Golf GTI TCR and Polo GTI R5 are in action, allow the young drivers to develop step by step at the wheel of a Volkswagen.”

“In Formula 3, Volkswagen can look back on a remarkable record. For more than three decades, Volkswagen teams and drivers have enjoyed great success against teams from other manufacturers – we are sincerely grateful to them for this. We will continue to provide our customers with consistent support, in order to bring the 2018 season to a successful close in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and at the FIA Formula 3 World Cup in Macau,” Sven Smeets added. Between 1982 and 1991, seven Volkswagen drivers won the title in the German Formula 3 championship alone. They included such motorsport stars as record Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher (D), record Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen (DK) and record DTM champion Bernd Schneider (D). Max Verstappen (NL), Daniel Ricciardo (AUS), Carlos Sainz junior (E) and Brendon Hartley (NZL) are among the current crop of Formula 1 drivers to have gained valuable experience with Volkswagen Power in Formula 3. With ten victories to its name, the two-litre, four-cylinder Volkswagen engine is the most successful Formula 3 engine in history at the iconic Macau Grand Prix.

RIVETT CONFIDENT OF PUSHING FOR FOURTH RENAULT UK CLIO CUP CROWN IN 2018

Triple Champion Paul Rivett (Epsom Downs) says “the best is yet to come” after confirming he will contest his 13th full season in the Renault UK Clio Cup in 2018 with the WDE Motorsport team. Rivett previously won the Clio Cup in 2002, 2004 and 2011 and showed he had lost none of his flair last year when he finished runner-up in the standings following a fairy tale victory in his 200th race in the category. The 39-year-old, now on 47 career wins and dubbed ‘Mr Clio Cup’, goes into 2018 confident he can make it four titles to his name. Supporting him will be primary sponsor Tachosys. Rivett, who also helps to manage WDE, commented: “WDE has grown into one of the strongest teams on the grid and this year we will be stronger again in terms of driver line-up and also set-up behind the scenes. “I believe I’m in with my best chance since 2011 and I am sure the best is yet to come from me as a driver. The one area I’d like to improve is qualifying – that hindered me in 2017 – but I know what needs doing. The stats say I have a 25 per cent hit rate when it comes to winning titles and I am more determined than ever to make it number four.” He added: “The 2018 grid is looking as strong as ever and that has always been one of the Clio Cup’s great attributes –

the quality of the grid and the level of competitiveness. You’d choose quality over quantity any time if you want credibility as a racing driver. “Plus of course it’s part of the big show at the British Touring Car Championship’s events – massive crowds, live coverage on ITV4, professional organisation, great cars and the support from Renault who really understand what this sport is all about.” Rivett joined the rest of the 2018 Clio Cup grid last week at Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire for the championship’s annual Media Day launch. It will then be just over three weeks before the season gets under way at WDE’s home circuit of Brands Hatch in Kent on the weekend of Sat 7/Sun 8 April. WDE Team Principal Wayne Eason said: “Paul is the ultimate pro – he knows every trick in the book and is just as passionate about seeing WDE perform at the front as he is himself. We are very excited about working with him again in 2018.” Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes said: “Paul has been a terrific ambassador for the Clio Cup down the years. His speed remains undiminished, his race craft is second to none and we look forward to seeing if he can clinch that elusive fourth title in 2018.”

SEAT IBIZA RECOGNITION AT CAR OF THE YEAR 2018 AWARDS FOLLOWS WAVE OF CATEGORY WINS SEAT Ibiza earns hotly-contested second place at Car of the Year 2018

The SEAT Ibiza has continued to gain plaudits in 2018 after being named one of the top two cars in the prestigious Car of the Year 2018 awards. Announced in Geneva, a panel of 60 members representing 23 European countries awarded the Ibiza a coveted silver medal, with the supermini’s combination of distinctive styling and outstanding driving dynamics earning yet another industry accolade. The prestigious European Car of the Year award, now in its 55th year, celebrates the most outstanding new cars to hit the market over the last year, with the results revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. Having already added awards to its evergrowing trophy cabinet, including Best Supermini at the UK Car of the Year 2018 Awards and Best Small Car at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards this year, a rare but hard-fought silver medal at the

European Car of the Year 2018 awards has further cemented the Ibiza’s place at the top of its category. With just one prestigious award up for grabs – no categories, sub-divisions or class winners – it remains one of the most fiercely contested awards in the industry, making the Ibiza’s achievement all the more impressive. Richard Harrison, Managing Director of SEAT UK, commented: “From early on in its development we’ve known the Ibiza had all the ingredients to be a winning car; distinctive Spanish design, excellent driving dynamics and practicality that defies its segment. “The Ibiza has exceeded even our lofty expectations, winning the hearts and minds of motorists across Europe. As this latest accolade proves, the Ibiza isn’t just a segment-leader, but is an outstanding option compared to any car on sale.”

THE RETURN OF TIGER AND RORY

The world golf scene has been re-energised ahead of next month's Masters by the resurgence of Tiger Woods and the return to form of Rory McIlroy. Both are now certain to command plenty of interest in the build-up to the first major of the year, which takes place in less than a fortnight's time. Here is how they compare:FORM AT AUGUSTA Woods has not played at Augusta National since 2015 but the place hardly holds any fears for him having won four green jackets, even though the most recent of them came in 2005. Woods has endured a torrid few years, but if he stays fit, his current form suggests he has to be a contender. McIlroy is hoping to complete the career grand slam. His 2011 meltdown, when he squandered a four-shot lead on the final day, is not a psychological issue - indeed, it has provided a spur for much of his other successes since. After top-10 finishes in the last four years, he will feel a win is now due. PUTTING Much of the excitement around Woods' excellent performances at the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational has been generated when he has holed some long putts. They may not yet be dropping with the regularity of old but, with his short game also in good touch, Woods is a strong performer in and around the greens. Injury aside, putting has been one of McIlroy's biggest problems over the past year. His concerns looked a thing of the past on Sunday as, with confidence growing, he nailed a succession of clutch putts.

SAMM Starts

The first SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) Spring Series race for 2018 was staged last Sunday at Los Urrutias, having been postponed from the previous weekend due to strong winds. Disappointingly, the conditions for the restaged races did not encourage a big turnout, with just six competitors crewing three boats. In the first race, the two

Gambas crews of Shoestring Uno and Cuatro (pictured) pulled away from the Balaton Sailfish 18 Mistral, with Uno recording an easy win by the best part of three minutes. Cuatro, though, had the upper hand in the second race, helped by a wrong tactical decision by the Uno crew. The next SAMM race day is this coming Sunday.

DRIVING Woods can be wayward with the driver in his hands and was erratic off the tee during his aborted comebacks from back surgery. Some even suggested he should eschew the club altogether. Although he does now use longer irons more, he has not completely taken that advice and continues to seek distance. It is perhaps a weakness. McIlroy does not appear to have too many concerns on this front. He may not be the longest hitter in the game but he is not far off and, as he showed at Bay Hill when it really mattered, pretty accurate too. HANDLING THE CROWDS Crowds have warmed to Woods during his latest comeback and he seems to have sensed that. This will further boost him at the Masters. McIlroy too is a firm crowd favourite in most of the places he plays. OTHER DANGERS McIlroy seems to have overcome the rib injury that so hampered him in 2017 and is also more settled after a hectic period in his life that included getting married, moving house and changing equipment suppliers and caddie. With Woods, there is a feeling his back needs constant and careful management but the recent signs are good. Yet even if both are in good shape, there are plenty of dangerous rivals out there. A number of the game's leading lights are in decent form, including champion Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose and veteran Phil Mickelson. The likes of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler could also be in the mix.

Orihuela Lose

XV Rugby Murcia became the champions of the Murcia Federation’s FERRMUR Five league at the weekend, when they beat ITV Vega Baja Orihuela by 53 points to 10. The match, at the Murcia University ground, was played in unpleasant windy

conditions, with Murcia dominating affairs from start to finish as they crossed over the line for eight tries. Orihuela drop to fourth in the table, as they were overhauled by the Mar Menor Squalos, who won 29-14 away to bottom side Rugby Lorca.

Nico’s Tall Task

Torrevieja teenage tennis star Nico Kuhn celebrated his 18th birthday this week with a practice session in Florida, ahead of a wildcard entry to the Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 event of the season. The man that he shared the court with was the tall and big serviving Croatian, Ivo Karlovic, who at six foot 11 inches tall, is regarded as the tallest player in the history of men’s professional tennis.

Nico’s wildcard invitation to his first Masters event is a recognition of his progress in the sport, and is currently ranked 211 in the ATP rankings, after climbing to 204 last month after being the runner-up in the Challenger event in Budapest. The youngster was scheduled to face 25-year-old qualifier Darian King from Barbados in a first round clash that took place yesterday as The Courier went to press.

Preferente Preview

After last weekend’s holiday break, it’s back to serious business this weekend in Preferente Group Four in the battle to get a play-off slot, and there’s a big must-win six-pointer for CD Thader (pictured above). The Rojales-based side (pictured before their last match at Almoradi) have slipped from third in the table in a play-off position to fifth, having suffered narrow defeats to rivals Jove Espanol and Hercules, before winning over Elda, and then snatching a draw at Almoradi. This Sunday morning they entertain third-placed Alicante University (11.30 am kick-off), with Alicante five points ahead of them. A win is essential for Thader, plus they need fourthplaced Villajoyosa to come unstuck against UD Ilicitana this weekend, as eight matches remain of the ordinary season. CD Torrevieja (pictured below before their last outing) are in tenth place, and safe from relegation concerns, but with a stream of players coming and leaving, with Pablo Coria and Jorge Beltrán the latest to go, plus the uncertainty over who will be running the club, the actual football is almost taking a back seat. A poor performance and result at Callosa at least could have a full stop put at the end of it with the holiday break, with Torry entertaining FB Redovan this Sunday, who are just below them in the table. The match kicks-off at the Vicente Garcia stadium at 5.00 pm.

Off The Boil

Nine matches remain for Orihuela (pictured last Saturday) in their Valencia Regional third division campaign, and they have a very nice 10-point buffer over teams trying to get into the season’s end play-offs. Orihuela are third in the table, just a point behind second-placed Levante, and four points behind new leaders Castellón, but the Vega Baja club are making life just a wee bit difficult for themselves with some recent disappointing results. Last Saturday they could only draw nil-nil away to relegation favourites Buñol, and so missed a chance to go second with Levante not having a match.

They play this Saturday, as opposed to Sunday, at Los Arcos, with midtable Paterna the opponents. 11th-placed Crevillente, like Orihuela, were also up against a side fighting relegation last Sunday, with second-bottom Borriol grabbing a one-all draw (match action below). Elche Ilicitano kept themselves just above the relegation group with a fine two-one victory over mid-table UD Alzira, but they could find themselves in the drop zone after this weekend’s fixtures, as it is the turn of the Ilicitanos to sit out the latest round of matches.

Goals Expected Almoradi (pictured below) have been revitalised under new coach Roberto Cases, and were unlucky not have beaten Thader in their last match. The team have stlll to banquish thoughts of relegation but have got some self-belief back, and lie in 13th place in the Preferente table with 29 points to their name, and four points above the drop zone. They have a tricky match at seventh-placed Villena this Sunday (5.00 pm kick-off), who are still harbouring an outside chance of getting into the play-off’s.

CD Montesinos return to action this Sunday with the short trip to the Regional Primera Group Eight whipping boys, bottom side Torrevieja CF. Torre have a woeful eight points to their name, with just two wins this season, so free-scoring third-placed Monte will be confident of victory. The match, to be played at the Campo

Gabriel Samper, near the swimming pool at Sports City, kicks off at noon. This season’s meeting at Montesinos saw Torrevieja thrashed six-two, with Vaz getting a hat-trick, repeating his last outing’s performance against Bahia Santa Pola. Monte are 11 points behind secondplaced UD Horadada, who play CF Rafal this weekend.

BARCELONA 2 ATHLETIC BILBAO 0

REAL MADRID 6 GIRONA 3

Barcelona stayed on course for a 25th La Liga title thanks to a victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Nou Camp on Sunday. The Catalan giants were in scintillating form in the first half as strikes from Paco Alcacer, who started in place of the suspended Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi handed them the advantage at the interval. However, Barca eased off the gas to put in a lacklustre second-half performance but they were rarely troubled as coach Ernesto Valverde secured a win over his former side. Victory moved Barcelona, who stretched their unbeaten run to 35 games in the league, 11 points clear with nine games to play after Atletico Madrid's 2-1 defeat at Villarreal. There are no La Liga Primera matches this weekend due to the international break.

Cristiano Ronaldo made it 17 goals in his last eight games as he scored four in Real Madrid's thrilling win over Girona in La Liga on Sunday evening. La Liga's surprise package Girona went in at half-time with a 1-1 scoreline on their first visit to the Santiago Bernabeu when Christian Stuani (28) equalised Ronaldo's opener (11). However, Real found top gear after the break as Lucas Vazquez (58) and two more from Ronaldo (48, 64) raced the hosts into a 4-1 lead. Zinedine Zidane's men took their foot off the gas to allow Stuani to score his second (67) but substitute Gareth Bale (86) restored the three-goal cushion. Juanpe headed home a consolation for Girona (88) before Ronaldo grabbed his fourth in injury-time after a magnificent pass from Toni Kroos. Real remain third in the table, 15 points behind Barcelona, but now four points behind Atletico, with no matches this weekend because of the international break.

In Form Elche

ELCHE 3 UE CORNELLA 0 It appears that coach Pacheta has delivered performances and results in contrast to what his sacked predecessor Josico couldn’t with the same set of players. For the second successive home match Elche kept a clean sheet, and this was a quality performance against a team just below them in the Segunda Division B table Benja with two goals and Collantes were the scorers, with the Ilicitanos going up to second place, eight points behind Mallorca. More importantly, they are four points clear of fifth-placed Lleida Esportiu, with eight matches remaining. The next one of those is a Sunday lunchtime trip to 12th placed Ebro for a noon kick-off. Commenting on Elche’s win and what it meant, coach Pacheta said "I'm not looking at the table but I’m only interested in Ebro". He will have to shuffle his pack though as Josan and Manuel Sánchez are out through injury, whilst Sory, Zotko and Benktib are away on international duty.

Alonso Case

Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid and Barcelona that he wants his future resolved before the start of France’s World Cup campaign Barcelona are reportedly ready to pay the 27-year-old’s €100-million release clause this summer and already have a deal in place to sign the forward. Atletico are keen to offer a new contract in order to keep Griezmann, and the player insists he will make a decision over his future before the start of the World Cup, which begins on June 14. ‘I want to travel to Russia without this concern,’ he told L’Equipe. ‘It’s not about knowing where I’ll play, but about having the peace of mind if I’m still in one place or another. ‘It may be boring, but I have told my sister that, whether I stay or not, this will have to be resolved beforehand (the beginning of the World Cup). ‘What bothers me the most is that everyone asks me about this issue.’

Zinedine Zidane has approved Real Madrid’s move to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich this summer, according to reports in Spain. The Champions League holders are in the market for a new striker and the Poland international is reportedly top of their shortlist. According to the AS newspaper, Madrid already have an agreement in place with Lewandowski’s newly appointed agent Pini Zahavi, although the club have not held talks with Bayern over a transfer fee. The report claims that Zidane is fully behind Madrid’s bid to sign the 29-year-old, although any deal is likely to cost the Spanish champions around €100 million. To offset the huge transfer fee, Madrid could waive the €42m Bayern need to pay in order to turn James Rodriguez’s loan into a permanent deal. Lewandowski is enjoying another superb season for Bayern and has scored 32 goals in 37 appearances so far this season. Last month, reports in Germany claimed that the Poland international rejected the offer of a new contract from Bayern. His current deal is due to expire in 2021.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a five-year jail sentence and a fine of four million euro for former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso over accusations of tax fraud. Alonso is accused of not disclosing the full amount he was paid in image rights during his time at Real Madrid. Prosecutors say he defrauded the state of two million euro between 2010 and 2012 and called for the same sentence to be applied to Alonso's financial advisor Ivan Zaldua Azcuenaga and the administrator of consultancy shell company, Ignasi Maestre Casanova. The case against Alonso had initially been dismissed but was reopened earlier this year. Alonso and all those accused have denied any wrongdoing. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the subject of investigations by Spanish authorities in the last 12 months. Messi was given a 21-month jail sentence for tax evasion last July but it was later changed to a quarter million euro fine.

The Spanish Rugby Federation has lodged a formal complaint to World Rugby and Rugby Europe, demanding that their game against Belgium which ended in a controversial defeat on Sunday should be replayed. Spanish officials were left fuming over the performance of Romanian referee Vlad Iordachescu in the 18-10 defeat by Belgium which allowed Romania to qualify for the World Cup at Spain’s expense. Spain had looked set to qualify for the first time since 1999, but their defeat in Brussels handed Romania the automatic European qualifying spot. Spanish players confronted referee Vlad Iordachescu, a Romanian, at the final whistle in their loss to Belgium. Spain’s rugby federation said it had warned the referee commission of governing body Rugby Europe about appointing Iordachescu to the game. “Romania needed Spain to lose in order to go to the World Cup, evidently, a Romanian referee was not ideal for this game,” said a statement on the organisation’s website. “The federation will present a complaint to Rugby Europe, copying World Rugby, so that the Commission of Referees can review the video of the game and determine if the referee deliberately favoured Romania’s interests and, if that is the case, take action.” "We weren't allowed to play," said Spain coach Santiago Santos. "The referee kept stopping the game at every moment. Our game was stopped continuously, the Belgians benefited from many more decisions.” "The difference between penalties against us and for us was huge. When we were trying to come back in the game the play kept on being interrupted." Spain must now beat Portugal in a playoff to maintain any hopes of reaching the 2019 tournament in Japan, with the winner facing Samoa in a two-legged tie. Rugby Europe issued a statement following the match clarifying its procedure for the selection of match officials. "Referees' appointments for the Rugby Europe Championship have been made ahead of the competition by an independent and neutral skilled committee," it said. "It would be inappropriate to comment on match official performance before the usual full review has been undertaken." Spain, ranked 19th in the world, were overwhelming favourites to beat 25th-ranked Belgium on Sunday. But on a muddy pitch worsened by overnight snow they failed to get up to full speed and their players, angered by the way the game was officiated, were involved in heated exchanges with both the Belgian players and referee Iordachescu at the end of the match. Members of the Spanish coaching staff were forced to restrain their players, while the referee had to be escorted off the pitch. Romania have now extended their record of competing at every World Cup since its inception in 1987. The Oaks lost 25-16 to Georgia in Tbilisi on Sunday but compiled 29 points in qualifying matches across the last two Rugby Europe Championships - three more than Spain.

Italy's Andrea Dovizioso won a thrilling seasonopening Qatar MotoGP on Sunday, surviving a last lap challenge from world champion, Spain’s Marc Marquez. Dovizioso, on a Ducati, re-took the lead on the final bend of the 22-lap night race to record a notable victory on a track where he had finished as runner-up for the past three years. Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi came home in third place on a Yamaha. Dovizioso, who finished runner-up in the world championship last year, first snatched the lead with five laps to go from long-time leader France's Johann Zarco, who started on pole. The Italian held off Marquez, on a Honda, until the dramatic last lap, before taking the chequered flag and his first 25 points of the season. It was a perfect race, perfect weekend," said Dovizioso. "We worked very well." Marquez said he tried to push Dovizioso "100%". And just like in Austria and Japan last year, Dovizioso beat him to the chequered flag. “It’s like a deja-vu,” Marquez said. “Last corner with Andrea, go in, I go wide, he go in and win the race.” “This will change in the future I hope!” Nine-time world champion Rossi said he was happy with a podium finish, adding he wanted to follow it up with more this year. "I expect more than last year," said Rossi. "Thanks to my team, thanks to Yamaha and we try to continue this." France's Zarco eventually trailed in eight, despite leading for two-thirds of the race, losing out to the second works Yamaha of Spain’s Maverick Vinales (pictured bottom) and the second factory Honda of Dani Pedrosa in the latter stages. Vinales was one of the fastest riders on track during the second half of the race, but unfortunately for the Movistar Yamaha, rider he had to fight back from 15th in the early stages and could only cross the line in sixth. Afterwards, Vinales was a mixture of 'p-ssed off' and 'very happy' as he climbed from his M1. The disappointment was that it took so long to get up to speed, but there was also joy and no doubt relief that - after 'losing three months' with the wrong set-up - he was back to the Maverick of old at the end of the race. "Honestly, I was a bit p-ssed off because if my '55s came much earlier I could maybe have been fighting for the podium," Vinales said. "So for sure I was p-ssed off, but in the same way I was very happy because the team never gave up and finally, with patience, we found a really good set-up. Something I like.”

TITLE TIME

HAMILTON’S HOPES

Carl Frampton and Nonito Donaire will be fighting for the WBO interim featherweight world title in their Belfast contest next month. The news adds extra spice to the showdown between Belfast boxer Frampton and former four-weight world champion Donaire. The 35-year-old Filipino is expected to provide tough opposition for Frampton, having held seven world titles in a career that has lasted 17 years. Frampton won on points in his comeback fight with Horacio Garcia in November and returns to the SSE Arena ring against Donaire on April 21st.

Reigning World Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is bidding to become only the third driver to win the title more than four times with the season opener taking place in Australia this Sunday at Albert Park, Melbourne. But Hamilton - partnered again this season by Valtteri Bottas - will also be out to help the Silver Arrows win a history-making fifth constructors’ championship. Mercedes have been the dominant force in the past four seasons but Ferrari and Red Bull are set push them hard after their cars impressed during

pre-season testing. Hamilton expects an even sterner test this season and said: “Every year we have to take it to another level. “If you look at last year, Red Bull was a second or so behind at the first race and at the last race they were right there with us. “Their rate of development was a little bit steeper than everyone else’s. “They seem to have done a great job on their car, it’s got a lot more furniture on it, and should be a lot quicker this weekend. They’ve also got two great drivers.

“Then you have Ferrari who were there in the real fight last year. It was no walkover, that’s for sure. “And this year we expect them to be on it too. “From what I understand, I think Red Bull and Ferrari are very close.” Hamilton is convinced Mercedes’ rival teams did not show their true hand during testing in Spain and said: “If you look at the Red Bulls, they never used their best race mode.” “I’m not sure if that’s the case for Ferrari, but that’s certainly the case for a couple of people.”

BOAT RACE

SOUTHGATE EXPERIMENTS

Oxford University will return to the Thames tomorrow in a bid to win a fifth Boat Race in six years against Cambridge University (6.30 pm, live on BBC 1). More than 250,000 people are expected to again line the banks of the river for the 164th Boat Race, with both crews again tackling The Championship Course, which stretches 4.2 miles from Putney to Mortlake. The women’s race over the same route starts an hour earlier.

England enter the final stretch ahead of the summer World Cup as preparations continue with a friendly tonight against the Netherlands in Amsterdam (kick-off 8.45 pm, live on ITV). Gareth Southgate has named four uncapped players in his 27-man squad - Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Alfie Mawson and Lewis Cook - as three experienced heads in Chris Smalling, Gary Cahill and Michael Keane drop out. Injured England squad regular Tom Heaton has this season been replaced by Pope in Burnley's goal, while Tarkowski has provided assured cover in front of him. Southgate has also selected Joe Hart despite his lack of minutes at West Ham.

Swansea defender Mawson has enjoyed another impressive season, joining uncapped Cook, captain of last summer's Under-20s world champions. Jack Wilshere also returns for the first time in almost two years as the Three Lions travel to the Amsterdam Arena before welcoming Italy to Wembley on Tuesday night, with both opponents having failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. There are a host of familiar faces for the hosts, with former Southampton and Everton head coach Ronald Koeman in the dugout for the first time, and he has called up Premier League regulars Patrick van Aanholt, Nathan Ake, Virgil van Dijk and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
