lans to widen a bridge over the AP-7 in the Lomas de Cabo Roig area of the Orihuela Costa to make it safer for pedestrians and motorists appear to be moving forward, according to Orihuela council. The residents association of Cabo Roig and Lomas have arranged a demonstration on Calle Cabo Creus this Saturday morning, to show their long-standing concerns over the lack of safety on the route. The road, including the bridge, has no pavements and pedestrians are having to make do with a 40-centimetre-wide hard shoulder as they cross the bridge. Eighteen months ago, La Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) said that residents of the Lomas urbanisation are taking their life into their hands by walking along the Calle

Cabo de Creus to the local health centre and other facilities, including the beach. Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana (pictured left),

said that a meeting with Valencian Government road chief, Ismael Ferrer, brought the news that a feasibility plan should be in Ferrer’s

departmental hands within two months. Ferrer stated during his talks with Bascuñana that he did not foresee any objections to the project, though no further timescales were declared. Other topics included the major jams caused on the N-332 during the summer months, with the Mayor pointing out the Development Ministry were carrying out studies to improve traffic flows at the three roundabouts at Punta Prima-Rocio del Mar; La Zenia; and Cabo Roig. The vexed matter of trying to scrap the tolls on the AP7 in the Orihuela municipality to relieve the pressure on the N-332 was also talked about, however, neither Bascuñana or Ferrer could shed any further light on the matter at the present moment.

A man who was originally arrested after a 39-year-old British woman was found dying in a roadside irrigation channel in the Murcia region, has been detained again by authorities. The incident happened on Friday January 26th at Los Ramos off the San Javier to Torreaguera road. A burnt-out car was found a kilometre away, with the vehicle owner arrested at

the time, but then released as inquiries continued. The suspect was rearrested last week along with his brother, as well as a woman for withholding information from the Guardia Civil and the local police. Road markings back in January suggested the stillunamed British victim was mowed down by the car, which was then set alight further down the highway.

A new sea rescue boat operated by the Cruz Roja has been officially brought into service in the San Pedro del Pinatar area, meaning that there are now seven craft patrolling the Murcia region coast. The LS-Salene will be based at Lo Pagan and will be manned by Cruz Roja

volunteers. It replaces the LS-Del Mar Dos, which has returned to Valencia City. Sixty at sea operations were carried by out by the Cruz Roja last year, including the rescue of sailors and bathers, as well as helping boats that were unable to reach land.

Guardamar Death

Editorial Tuesday 12:00

A 69-year-old man died on Sunday after a fire in his Guardamar apartment, located between Calles Pasaje de Poniente and Molivent. The fire started shortly before 2:00 pm in the five-storey block, and apparently started in the man’s kitchen. Firemen from Almoradi and Torrevieja attended the scene, and evacuated the building as a precaution. Unfortunately the man was already dead when emergency services arrived.

A 70-year-old Torrevieja teacher has been arrested on a charge of sexually abusing a 12-year-old pupil at his school. The Columbian national was detained by the Guardia Civil in the city, after the girl's mother went to the

Guardia to file a complaint. The allegations go back to September, with the man accused of assaulting her after giving her extra and private tuition at the facility, which started with “relaxation techniques” before moving to outright assault.

The Guardia Civil are continuing their investigations to see whether other young children had been assaulted by the man, who has been teaching at the school for over five years, and had been in the profession for two decades.

Windy Collapses Strong gusts of wind caused by Storm Hugo meant a busy Saturday for local firefighters, as they were called out to 30 incidents in the Vega Baja region, especially in Torrevieja and Orihuela. A palm tree fell onto two stalls on Torrevieja's Paseo de la Libertad (picture from the Información newspaper), whilst falls elsewhere saw the road that links Orihuela City with the village of Molins being blocked. More serious problems

happened inland and in the north of the country, when a four-year-old boy was killed on Saturday lunchtime, after a tree fell down on him in

Madrid's central Retiro Park, just half an hour after the city council announced it was about to evacuate the complex due to the gales.

Scrapyard Blaze 50 cars were burnt to a crisp at a Dolores scrapyard on Monday afternoon, as a blaze started in the area of some old tyres. Firefighters from Almoradi, Elche, Orihuela, and Torrevieja went to the Desguace Rebagliato yard, after the fire started at around 1.30 pm. Plumes of black smoke could be seen for several kilometres, with the fire crews bringing the blaze under control after an hour.

Police Concerns

Algorfa’s mayor Manuel Ros, who was caught drinkdriving three times over the limit in Benijófar earlier this year, has refused five requests to buy a breathalyser unit for his local police force. In a report in the Información newspaper, the CSIF union says that five pleas for the mayor to pur-

chase a breath test machine have fallen on silent ears, despite the municipality recently announcing a budget surplus of over 800 thousand euro. The union says that they have to ask neighbouring forces to borrow their equipment, and they claim that they need bulletproof vests and a capture lead to deal

with dangerous dogs to help do their work safely. They add that their patrol cars are in urgent need of replacement, with two of them having notched up over 400 thousand kilometres. The union has also told Algorfa council that one of the vehicles is not fit for purpose.

Albanians Nabbed

A travelling band of seven Albanian robbers aged between 17 and 34 years, who are accused of at least 40 home thefts worth around 350 thousand euro, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. A joint operation between the Guardia in Almoradi and Guardamar, plus colleagues north in Cantabria, and the Guardia’s organised crime unit in Alicante saw the offenders rounded up. Three arrests were made in Torrevieja, Los Montesinos, and the Orihuela Costa, with four others being picked up at Laredo in Cantabria and the Barcelona area. The gang moved all

around Spain, and would travel from whichever “safe house” they were staying at, and go at a large distance to strike, in order not to attract any attention. Robberies were normally carried out in the late afternoon, and they used walkietalkies and other electronic devices to make sure that they were not spotted carrying out their burglaries. Their targets would be quickly broken into, and any valuable small items would be quickly seized, with their getaway vehicles using false number plates, and they would set up. designated hiding places to hide their loot in outside areas. Despite all the measures

they took, the Guardia fingered who they were and followed them during one of their operations, and discovered one of their “hidden sites” in a ditch by a road. Once every member of the gang was identified, a simultaneous visit to various addresses took place to arrest them, with six vehicles, jewellery worth around 10 thousand euro, and items used to break into homes being seized. Besides the 40 charges of theft, the seven robbers are also being charged with the multiple falsification of number plates and belonging to a criminal gang, amongst other things on a big rap sheet.

Car Dealer Fatality

One of Torrevieja’s most popular annual events - the Sevillanas Fair - will return to May this year, after the 2017 event had to be pushed back to October. Last year’s fair was controversially postponed from

the spring, because the timetable had somehow slipped behind in awarding a contract to bidders to run the event, despite it being a firm May fixture for over three decades. Torrevieja’s Fiestas coun-

cillor, Domingo Pérez, announced that the dates for the fair wll be between Wednesday May 23rd and Sunday May 27th, with an organising tender being advertised at just under 100 thousand euro.

The 65-year-old co-owner of a Mercedes car dealership in the Orihuela area died on Monday when he fell off the showroom roof. The incident was reported to emergency services at around 10.30 am with the body of Francisco Santos Berna discovered on the ground at Correntias Medias on the CV-95 between Orihuela City and Bigastro. He had gone onto the roof to inspect whether there had been any damage following the weekend’s strong winds and rain. Married with two children, his funeral took place on Wednesday.

Water Concessions

Spain’s airports including those at Alicante-Elche and San Javier will cap bottled water prices at €1.60 and install drinking fountains in response to complaints from passengers to the public ombudsman. Travellers say they cannot take water on the plane, because a maximum of 100 millilitres of liquid per container up to a total of one litre is permitted through the security gates – but once on

the other side, vending machines sell bottled water at inflated prices. These vary by airport, but can be priced at up to three euros for a 330ml bottle, and prices are similar on planes themselves. Anticipated law changes relaxing liquid allowances have never come into force, meaning all fluids, even make-up, have to be carried in standard sealable clear plastic bags.

Some passengers take empty water bottles through security and fill them up from the tap in the bathrooms airside, but the quality cannot always be guaranteed. Airport operator AENA has promised that bottled water from machines will not cost any more than €1.60, although it has not confirmed the bottle size. Drinking fountains are also expected to be set up in all airports.

Swindler Detained

The leader of a criminal gang which hacked into cash machines to make them spew out money as part of a one-billion-euro swindle has been arrested at Playa de San Juan in Alicante. Europol announced that the National Police had apprehended the head of a cybercrime syndicate, which targeted over 100 financial institutions in 40 countries with two pieces of malware, known as Cobalt and Carbanak. The Ministry of the Interior named a 34-year-old man called Denis K., of Ukrainian nationality, as the “brains” behind the operation, with three other unnamed Ukrainian and Russian members also arrested. Cobalt affected some financial institutions in Spain

and the UK, as well as Belgium, and the Czech Republic, Europol said, with the criminals able to scoop as much as 10 million euro per heist. The hackers managed to access “practically all the banks in Russia”, Spanish authorities said, while using platforms based in Gibraltar and the UK to load up prepaid cryptocurrency cards. One of the detainees also created an “enormous infrastructure” for bitcoin mining. The cryptocurrencies were used to launder the cash and spend it on luxury cars and houses, Europol said. The complex theft used so-called spear phishing to target individual bank employees with emails which infected their computers with malicious software. The virus could then spread

to bank servers and allow the criminals to transfer money to their accounts, raise the balance found in accounts, and spit out money from automatic teller machines (ATMs) at specified time. The arrest came after a complex investigation involving the National Police and the FBI, as well the Romanian, Belarussian and Taiwanese authorities alongside private security firms. The group first began its activities in 2013, launching a malware campaign targeting financial transfers and ATM networks known as Anunak. The coders made a more sophisticated programme called Carbanak which was used until 2016, Europol said.

Spain’s “bad bank”, created to clean up the country’s finance sector, reported its fifth consecutive annual loss last week, citing the sale of assets at a loss and the high costs of maintaining its portfolio. Sareb, set up in 2012 to take on about 50 billion euro in land, buildings and loans from bailed-out banks, made a 565-million-euro loss for 2017.

The bad bank also said it hoped to sell assets worth three billion euro this year and confirmed it would list its Tempore unit, which manages about 1,500 rented flats. Sareb has a mandate to sell the assets it holds in the 15 years from when it was established. It had initially predicted that it would make a profit in its second year of operation.

Puigdemont Arrested

A German court ruled on Monday that the former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont will stay in jail pending procedures that will determine whether he will be extradited to Spain.

The separatist leader has been detained since Sunday morning by German police acting on a European arrest warrant issued by Spain. The local court in the northern town of Neumunster decided to extend Puigdemont’s detention. Following the ruling, his case was expected to be

permissible,” the senior public prosecutor told reporters on Monday evening. A formal decision on Spain’s extradition request was not expected before next week. Germany has up 60 days to decide whether to return him. Puigdemont was detained by German police in the

north of the country, following a request by Spanish authorities. He was travelling from Denmark to Belgium, where he has been living in selfimposed exile since October last year. A Madrid court reactivated on Friday a European arrest warrant against Puigdemont on charges of sedition and rebellion. The 55-year-old politician led a parliamentary session in October last year that saw separatist lawmakers vote for the region of Catalunya to declare independence from Spain. He and 12 other separatist leaders were officially charged with rebellion. Protests broke out across Catalunya on Sunday after Puigdemont was taken into custody in Germany. At least 89 people were injured in clashes with police and four arrests were made. In central Barcelona, protesters chanted "Freedom for the political prisoners" and "This Europe is shameful!" as they headed to the offices of the European Commission and the German consulate. Spanish news agency Efe estimated crowds of 55,000 in the centre of the city. Smaller demonstrations were held in Girona, where Mr Puigdemont once served as mayor, Tarragona and Lleida. Some protesters also formed road blocks in various locations. Tensions in Catalunya are very high and its separatist leaders abandoned plans to name a new president after the arrest on Friday of the latest candidate, Jordi Turull, sparked protests in Barcelona. The Supreme Court issued a ruling last Friday that 25 Catalan leaders should be tried for rebellion, embezzlement or disobeying the state. They all deny the allegations.

Brits Blamed

The production of new vehicles in Spain fell by 4.3 percent during February compared with the same month in 2017, according to figures published by the Spanish Association of Vehicle Producers (ANFAC), who said the fall was down to fall in demand from Britain. ANFAC confirms that 263,983 vehicles were produced in February; 208,792 of which were private cars, with 50,285 industrial vehicles. The number of cars produced in February was 5.8 percent down on the same period last year, while there was just a 0.2 reduction in the production of industrial vehicles. Taking the first two months of 2018 as a whole, there is slightly better news

for the Spanish automobile industry as the total of 507,689 vehicles produced in January and February is 1.9 percent up on the first two months of 2018. In terms of exports, 211,026 vehicles were shipped abroad in February, a descent of 5.2 percent in February 2017, although taking January and February together have seen exports rise by 1.6 percent when compared with last year. ANFAC attributes the poor numbers for February to the "continued fall in car sales in the United Kingdom," which is the third biggest destination for Spanish-produced vehicles and also to the fact that some lines of production are coming to an end and being substituted by new vehicles.

Ryanair Victory A High Court judge in London has rejected a claim against Ryanair from a firm of solicitors over flight delay compensation. Bott & Co, a Cheshirebased practice specialising in airline passengers’ claims, had sought to recover legal fees in cases where Ryanair had settled direct with the customer. Under European passengers’ rights rules, airlines are liable to pay cash compensation for delays in arrival of three hours or more. An airline need not pay when “extraordinary circumstances” are to blame. Examples include air traffic control strikes or bad weather. But mechanical faults or staffing issues are not acceptable excuses. It was revealed in court that the solicitors’ firm handles around 25,000 compensation claims a year involving European passengers’ rights rules.

The average payout is 327 euro, of which Bott & Co collects one third. In most cases airlines pay the firm, which deducts its fee and passes on the rest to the client. But in 2016 Ryanair began to settle direct with passengers. Bott & Co’s High Court claim was for unpaid fees in such cases. It had tried to recoup the money from the passenger, but 30 per cent did not pay. The solicitors also argued that a clause in Ryanair’s terms and conditions requiring passengers to contact the airline before submitting a claim through a third party was unfair. But Judge Edward Murray ruled: “Ryanair has established a straightforward and easy to use process for its passengers to make their flight delay compensation claims, either online or by correspondence, without the assistance of a third party.”

Broadband Promise

Every town and village in Spain will have access to broadband by the year 2021 and a budget of half a billion euros has been set aside for the purpose, according to Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. Within three years, every home and business in the country will be able to get online with a minimum speed of 300MB per second. Whilst the vast majority of built-up areas in the country have had broadband access for well over a decade, some of Spain's more rural regions are home to villages with populations in double figures – or even less – where mobile phone signals and internet connection of any type are often severely lack-

ing because telecommunications companies know they would make a significant loss investing in the necessary infrastructure. The government chose to make the announcement in Teruel, the capital of Aragon, because it is one of the provinces most at risk of its population declining rapidly, and the broadband plans are part of the State's attempt to curb this trend. In practice, although 100% of towns and villages will be online within three years, in actual fact only 95% of Spain's population will have access to highspeed internet, since the remaining 5% are isolated homes in the depths of the country a long way from their nearest built-up area.

Launderer Caught Europol’s most-wanted criminal on the run and the only woman in the organisation's top 70 fugitives, Tania Varela, has been arrested in Vilanova i la Geltrú in Catalunya, after four years of hiding from justice. Varela, aged 44, is the exgirlfriend of David Pérez Lago whose stepfather was the infamous Galicia drug baron Laureano Oubiña, has been missing since 2014 after escaping a sentence for similar crimes herself. She is accused of multimillion drug-smuggling hauls and of laundering the proceeds from her illicit trade. Police say she played a 'significant role' in northern Spain's biggest organised criminal gang, which used ports in the Galicia area to traffic cocaine and other class-A drugs from South America to Europe and included the notorious clans of Laureano Oubiña and Sito Miñanco Sra Varela, originally from Cambados in Galicia and a practising solicitor was sentenced in 2013 to seven years in prison for her part in a massive trafficking opera-

tion which police had uncovered in 2006 when they seized two tonnes of cocaine from a boat moored on beach in Pontevedra province, which turned out to be part of a six-tonne haul. A further two tonnes disappeared when the crew on a second boat fled the coast, and the remainder sank out at sea. Varela's then boyfriend David Pérez Lago pleaded guilty during the trial in 2011, as did his partners in crime, leading to their sentences being reduced from 20 to nine years.

But Varela, who was suspected of having set up front companies in tax havens to launder the drug money, insisted she was innocent and appealed her sentence to the Supreme Court. She had already been in custody pending trial, and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence during its appeal hearing in 2013. At this point, Varela fled, and has been on the run since. Before she was arrested, Tania Varela was office manager and legal advisor for the women's issues department at Cambados town hall.

The Crash Factor

Over-confidence is one of the main car crash risk factors in the over-65s, according to research by the Spanish Drivers' Observatory (DUCIT). Nine in 10 motorists of retirement age, when questioned, called themselves 'very good drivers' and said they were 'capable of dealing with dangerous situations' when at the wheel. According to DUCIT's data, whilst drivers over 65 are far less likely to be fined for speeding or drink-and drug-driving, they tend to overestimate their road skills, believing they are better than they actually are because of their extensive experience and high

mileage. Middle-aged motorists do not realise or accept that their reaction times are slower than when they were much younger adults, their concentration ability reduced, and their faculties are less responsive, with hearing and eyesight being less sharp, and that they are more likely to get tired quicker or be afflicted with muscular and joint pains. DUCIT adds that pensioners tend to drive older cars which lack the technology and safety features of newer models, and that, given that they are more likely to be on medication, in some cases they do not realise that these have side effects

which can reduce their motoring ability. No maximum age applies for getting behind the wheel in Spain, given that it is perfectly possible for a motorist in his or her 80s to be in excellent driving health whilst a person 20 years younger may already be afflicted with loss of faculties creating a hazard on the roads. And the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) does not intend to set an upper age limit, pointing out that having the use of a car is essential for integration, mobility and general quality of life for pensioners for as long as they are still safe to drive.

Talk to my family about money? I would rather poke out my eyes with a blunt stick! Keith Littlewood, International Financial Adviser at Blacktower, Costa Cálida

This is a subject that crops up time after time when I have meetings with my clients. Incredibly, they will tell me every little detail about not only their finances but usually also about their personal life or even their latest medical experiences. When I ask clients of a certain vintage whether they would like me to discuss their investments or my recommendations with their children or relatives, nine times out of ten I am met with a severe look of horror as though it was the worst possible thing I could have mentioned. What I often find is that the same client will gladly give their family details to put on beneficiary forms for when they pass away, but under no circumstances must the relatives know about it while they are alive. This may sound funny, but it really is quite a serious issue. It is important, in my opinion, that if you do not want your assets to be lost in the unknown after your

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME A very common question among dog lovers around the world is whether the Alsatian and the German Shepherdbreeds are one and the same, or are they different. If you take a straw poll, it is likely that you are going to get contradictory answers. This is hardly surprising considering the fact that they look so alike, but they are the same dog with only different names! Some people claim that there are actual differences between the dogs, while others say that it is the size and colour, while even others wants to stress on their places of origin. The proponents of the last theory say that Alsatian originated in Alsace in France while the German Shepherd actually comes from (not surprisingly) Germany. The truth is that the German Shepherd breed appeared late at the end of the 19th century in Germany and they were first exhibited at a show in Hanover in 1882. They were not like German Shepherds as we know them today though being rough coated, short tailed and rather resembling mongrels. The German Shepherd as we now know it didn't really appear until after the Second World War. The breed was actually created by the cross breeding of working sheep dogs from rural Germany by an ex cavalry officer called Max von Stephanitz whose aim was to create a working dog for herding which could trot for long periods. A breed standard was drawn up and the first breed show took place in 1899 following which the GSD became firmly established across Germany. In 1906 the first dogs were exported to the USA.

During the Second World War, both the Allies and the Nazis were employing the German Shepherd in their ranks to attack, surprise and outmanoeuvre their opponents. The German Shepherd being a big working dog with high intelligence and a natural propensity for training was considered to be of great value by the armed forces and was therefore hotly pursued. They worked as sentries, scout, messengers, and minedetector dogs. At the beginning of the war, it is estimated that the German army had more than 200 thousand dogs trained and ready for military work, mostly German Shepherds. Many were used on the front lines of battle and many were killed as they worked bravely and saved the lives of many men. However, the British were loath to using the name “German Shepherd and so they coined a new name, namely Alsatian, which somehow some people has come to refer to as a different dog breed. The Americans, however, had no such hangovers and the name German Shepherd was widely used. Once the Second World War was over, the British also decided that the name Alsatian has outlived its usefulness and went back to its real and trusted name, the German Shepherd. A relentless campaign by breeders back in 1977 led the Alsatian to finally getting back its original name, of German Shepherd, and today it is among the most popular dog breeds in the world. In the US it ranks as high as number two in the popularity stakes while in the UK it is constantly ranked in the top five. The German Shepherd is also known as GSD.

Silence Breaker

The family of a Scottish woman who went missing in southern Spain more than two years ago is offering a £100,000 reward for information which helps the investigation into her disappearance. Lisa Brown, originally from Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire, was 32 when she was reported missing by her former partner in November 2015. Police are treating the case as murder. Her brother, Craig Douglas, and the charity Crimestoppers have launched a fresh appeal for information in Cadiz. It is the first time Crimestoppers has put up a third-party reward on foreign soil. The charity, and Ms Brown's family, hope that

anonymity might give people in the local expat community the confidence to come forward. Mr Douglas said: "There's very few families worldwide where they actually don't know what's happened to people they love. "They're gone and you don't know where they are that's pretty overwhelming at times. "It's a daily struggle, Lisa was my wee sister and then she's not there. My mum's in her 70s, Lisa's son is only 10. "For that wee boy to go to school and come back and she's not there, I'm doing this for them - I refuse to let Lisa be forgotten. "We're hopeful we can get some sort of closure." Ms Brown was last heard from on 4 November 2015

when she spoke to her sister, Helen Jordan, on the phone. Her ex-partner reported her missing on 9 November after she failed to pick up their child from school. She had lived in Spain since the age of 18, and commuted to her job in Gibraltar. Roger Critchell, director of operations at Crimestoppers, said: "The Spanish police take it as a suspected murder for their investigation.” "Over the last two years they haven't been able to progress - they haven't found a body and they haven't been able to charge somebody.” "There's been a wall of silence - the expat community is very close, but somebody knows something.”

Voodoo Detentions

The Guardia Civil have rescued 39 Nigerian girls and women from a notorious sex trafficking ring who kept them in squalid cave-like houses and forced them into prostitution after threatening them with black magic. The operation, carried out with British and Nigerian law enforcement agencies, led to the arrests of 89 people including a well-known Nigerian DJ, according to a Europol statement. The investigations were kick-started in Torrevieja, after authorities got a complaint from a Nigerian woman staying in the city saying that she was subjected to voodoo back in her country, and forced to come over to Spain. Europol said the Nigerian crime ring was linked to the Eiye Confraternity - a network that Spanish authorities have previously compared to the mafioso in Chicago in the 1930s.

R.I.P. Neil Higgins It’s is with great sadness to announce the untimely death of Neil Higgins, proprietor of Med-Print, Torrevieja, on 22nd March, 2018. Beloved brother of Paula. Neil will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The victims, many under the age of 18, were believed to have undergone voodoo “juju” rituals in Nigeria to force them to comply with orders, Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said. After being trafficked to Spain via Libya and Italy, the women and girls were kept in cave houses in Almeria area, it said. They were then forced into prostitution to pay off “debts” of 30,000 euro each that they were told they owed the organisation for their journey to Europe. Europol said the DJ had helped transfer the victims to Spain and “organise sexual exploitation” in several provinces, including the Murcia region. It said bank accounts used by the network to launder more than 300 thousand euro had been blocked. “(This) was a highly organised crime gang, exploiting young woman for

lengthy periods of time, keeping them in horrendous and squalid conditions where they knew there would be no escape from,” the NCA’s deputy director Tom Dowdall said in a statement. Europol said raids were carried out across 11 Spanish cities last November but details of the operation could not be announced until last Thursday to avoid jeopardising investigations. The NCA said police had also arrested a Nigerian woman in Manchester this year who they believe was controlling some of the victims in Spain. She is in custody awaiting extradition to Spain, it said. Europol said Eiye operated in clandestine groups all over the world, funding the brotherhood in Nigeria through both legal and illicit activities, particularly through human trafficking.

Centre Update

Orihuela’s Emergencies councillor, Victor Valverde, says that the specifications for the tender to complete the Orihuela Costa’s Emergency Centre at La Zenia has been drawn up by the Valencian Government. As previously reported by The Courier, Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana met with Valencia government officials in January, with both sides agreeing that it was an urgent priority to advertise the tender for the unfinished building to be completed,

especially since delays could cause the loss of European Union funding. Victor Valverde met with the Valencian government’s new Emergencies deputy general director Dolores González on Tuesday in Valencia (both pictured), who with her boss, José María Ángel, is responsible for the Emergency Centre project. Tuesday’s meeting assessed the latest state of play, with Valverde stating that the tender document

specifications had been drawn up, and that EU grant deadlines would be met. No timetable was declared over the advertising of the tender, though earlier this year, the Orihuela mayor stated a hope that the building would be finished by the spring of next year. The C.L.A.R.O. political party have organised a demonstration this Sunday (April 1st) outside the incomplete structure at La Zenia, to protest against the years of delay.

Villamartin Roundabout

Work on a new roundabout on a busy stretch of road in the Villamartin-Las Filipinas area of the Orihuela Costa has been recently finished at a cost of over 50 thousand euro. New landscaping, improved lighting and paving are part of the struc-

ture at the junction of the Villamartin road and Calle Clavo. Coastal councillor Luisa Boné said that the roundabout had been called for by the local police and residents to deal with a blackspot that is seeing increasing volumes of traffic.

Orihuela council has said that previously announced road resurfacing work on the Orihuela Costa should start soon, with the contract to the winning tender close to be awarding, with the documentation of the successful bidder currently being processed.

Four in 10 cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes Almost four in 10 cancer cases in the UK could be prevented if British people changed their lifestyles by drinking less alcohol, keeping their weight down, ditching cigarettes and avoiding overdoing it on a sunbed, among other actions, research has revealed. New figures from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) show that more than 2,500 cancer cases a week are avoidable, with exposure to tobacco smoke the leading factor, accounting for just over 15% of cancer cases. “Lung cancer contributes well over half of those smoking-related cases, but there are also thousands of cancers of smoking-related bladder, oesophageal and bowel cancers every year to name just a few,” said Dr Katrina Brown, lead author of the study at CRUK. While the researchers say that smoking rates in the UK are falling by about 1% a year, they flagged growing

concerns about the nation’s expanding waistline, with excess weight the second leading preventable cause of cancer, accounting for 6.3% of cancer cases. The team said they hoped the government would learn from the success of measures such as advertising restrictions, tobacco taxes and standardised packaging in cutting smoking rates, and called for a 9pm watershed for junk food adverts and for food manufacturers to come up with new recipes to reduce salt, sugar and fat in products. However, the team said a shift in public attitudes was also necessary, warning that obesity had the potential to become “the new smoking”. “People regard being large as increasingly normal, and that is a shift in social norms and acceptability,” said Prof Linda Bauld, who works on behavioural research for cancer prevention at CRUK. “We need to get back down

to what is the normal while recognising the challenges individuals face.” While a recent campaign by CRUK highlighting the link between obesity and cancer was met with anger by some who accused the charity of fat-shaming, Bauld said the charity had a duty to increase awareness, noting that just 15% of adults in the UK recognised the connection between obesity and

cancer. The team say that while cancer survival is improving, the rate of new cancer cases in the UK has risen by 7% over the past decade, after taking into account the ageing population and population growth, and is expected to continue to increase by about 2% every year, making prevention important. The new research, pub-

lished in the British Journal of Cancer, is based on a number of sources, including national surveys, cancer registries and analyses of data from scientific papers. The results reveal that drinking alcohol, having a lowfibre diet and infections such as HPV each account for just over 3% of cancer cases, with exposure to substances at work, such as asbestos, and UV radiation each causing almost 4% of cancer cases. Air pollution, eating processed meat, not breastfeeding and exposure to radiation such as radon gas each accounted for less than 2% of cancer cases. The figures took into account overlap between the different aspects of lifestyle, and only included definite causes of cancers. “What we are talking about here is at the population level: what we can’t do is say for any individual person what their risk is,” said Sir Harpal Kumar, chief execu-

tive for CRUK. “We can’t for example say if you don’t smoke you won’t get cancer, neither can we say if you do smoke you will get cancer, because these things are affected by other factors.” The team note that the proportion of preventable cases of cancer varies between the four nations within the UK, with 41.5% of cancers avoidable in Scotland, compared to 37.3% in England – a difference Brown put down to socioeconomic factors affecting lifestyles. Overall, the proportion of avoidable cancer cases was slightly higher in men than women, probably due to higher levels of lifestyle factors such as smoking in men. However, some, such as excess weight and alcohol, were responsible for a greater proportion of cancers for women – probably because the cancers involved primarily affect women.

Obesity dulls sense of taste, study suggests Obesity dulls the sense of taste, according to research that offers new insights into why some people enter a persistent cycle of weight gain. Researchers found that within eight weeks of

becoming obese, mice lost 25% of their taste buds. The findings suggest that weight gain not only changes appetite but may also fundamentally alter the way taste is perceived. “Obesity is by nature very

complex,” said Robin Dando, a food scientist at Cornell University in New York and senior author. “There are a bunch of different factors that contribute to our state of obesity – we think a change to taste is

one of those, and one that people don’t tend to consider.” The findings are the latest to push back against the assumption that people become obese because they love food more than the average person and so find it harder to resist. “I think liking food more may not be what’s going on,” said Dando. Several converging lines of evidence now suggest the reverse may be true. Studies of brain activity have found that people with higher body mass index appear to find pleasant tastes relatively less rewarding – as measured by their brain response – and so may need to eat more to obtain the same dopamine kick. Other work has shown that people with dulled taste sensitivity tend to gravitate towards sweeter, fattier foods. The latest findings suggest obesity does not simply reprogramme taste perception at the psychological level. In the study, the mice were fed either a normal or a fatty diet. After eight weeks, the mice on the high-fat diet weighed about one third more. The scientists found they also had about 25% fewer taste buds than the lean mice. Taste buds comprise about 50 to 100 cells of three major types, with different roles in sensing the five primary tastes (salt, sweet, bitter, sour and umami). These cells have a rapid turnover, living an average of just 10

days. The findings suggest taste buds and their progenitor cells are particularly sensitive to damage from inflammatory chemicals that are raised in obesity, resulting in a rapid decline of the overall number. The study homed in on one specific inflammatory chemical that is elevated in obesity, called TNF-alpha, which acts as a messenger between the body’s cells. The scientists found that mice that had been engineered to be genetically incapable of making TNFalpha did not experience any reduction in taste buds, despite gaining weight, suggesting this compound may be the culprit. The team now plan to assess whether the same process occurs in people. “We’re certainly not identical to mice in our physiology, but our taste buds work pretty similarly, and the same factors related to inflamma-

tion we think are responsible for taste loss are elevated when we become obese,” said Dando. Nicola Pirastu, a geneticist who works on food preference at the University of Edinburgh, said the findings suggest obesity may exaggerate underlying differences in taste perception that incline people towards unhealthy food choices in the first place. “If we were to translate this to humans who can choose their food, this could push people to look for even more calorie-dense food,” he said. “This could create a feedback loop in which lower taste buds would increase obesity, which would reduce the number of taste buds, thus increasing obesity even more.” Dando said the findings could help devise new approaches to losing weight, with a greater focus on the influence of taste perception on what people eat.

Nine Spanish destinations not to be missed this Easter break the different processional routes, pointing out the best spots to watch them – be it a nice corner or a good place to hear a saeta, a revered Spanish religious song. The platform can also organize other personalized private tours.

1. Admire tulips in Madrid “You don’t need to go all the way to Holland to admire tulips,” says the staff at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid, which to celebrate the start of spring has organized the Tulip Tulipae exhibit (until May 20) at the Villanueva Pavilion. Visitors can learn about the plant’s history and see over 80 works by 50 of the best botanical artists in the world, who were given a tulip bud over a year ago and asked to paint it once it bloomed. 2. Slip and slide in Tenerife aquatic park Singha is a 240-meter-long water slide with 14 twists that soars up six meters per second and drops at 18 meters per second. It is one of the star attractions of Siam Park, in southern Tenerife, and has been named best aquatic park in the world by

TripAdvisor users every year since 2014. Best of all the island’s dependably warm climate means Siam can be enjoyed throughout the year. 3. Follow the brotherhood on a guide to Seville It’s easy for a visitor to get lost in the enormity of Easter week celebrations in Seville. To provide an in-depth look at the city at its most important moment, tour guide platform Conoce mi ciudad (Know my city) has organized two guided visits with a cofrade, a member of one of the Catholic church associations that play a key role in Holy Week activities. The first leaves in the morning and shows tourists around the city, explaining the last preparations members make before their procession in the afternoon. In the second afternoon tour, a cofrade leads a smaller group (no more than six people) through

4. Escape zombies in Benidorm There are lots of fun things to do in Benidorm that don’t involve lying in the sand in the sun or visiting a chiringuito,a beach hut bar. Lockdown Escape Room gives visitors the chance to play a series of escape games. In one, participants are pit against zombies and have to split up and work together to save themselves from the swarm of the living dead. In another game, they are thrown into a 1960’s spy thriller as Russians and Americans race to be the first to the moon. And in the last, visitors are sent into The Orphanage movie and have 75 minutes to escape.

(also in Agüimes) or Sardina (another one of the most popular locations) are other easy scuba diving spots. More complicated dives can be done in the town of Mogán, to the Alfonso XII shipwreck (a huge steamship that sunk in 1885 with several cases of gold on board), or to the sunken ship Arona. 6. Visit a citrus fruit orchard in Mallorca In Sóller, about 30 kilometers away from Palma de Mallorca, you’ll find Ecovinyassa, an 18,000square-meter ecological orange and lemon orchard, with views of the Tramuntana mountain range. There are also pomegranates, avocados, and loquat, as well as chickens and peacocks. The orchard is open throughout the Easter break, from 10am to 2pm, and allows visitors to go on one-hour tours to see (and smell) the orange trees

5. Go deep-sea diving in Gran Canaria The El Cabrón beach in Agüimes has areas suitable for both beginner and advanced divers and is one of the most well-known places for scuba diving in Gran Canaria (you can also go snorkeling). The island has diving schools all along the coastline. El Risco Verde

in full bloom. A maximum of 15 people are allowed on each tour. “We want visitors to enjoy the silence of the landscape,” says its owner, Sebastiana Massanet. The visit ends with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a serving of pa amb oli, a staple of Catalan cuisine consisting of olive oil, salt and tomato spread over a slice of bread. 7. Discover Granada on a nighttime tour The nighttime tour of Granada's historic Albaicín neighborhood starts at 9pm and leads visitors through the area’s winding backstreets where processions (and tourists) are nowhere to be seen. Under the cover of darkness, the visitors (kept to small groups out of respect for the residents) learn about the most important events and sites of what was the once heart of the city.

8. Explore Catalan modernism in Barcelona While the modernista Barcelona pass – which will give visitors admission to the city’s least-known art nouveau landmarks for a week – is not set to be ready until the end of April, tourists can still enjoy the city’s spectacular architecture. A visit to Casa Batlló, the famous creation of legendary architect Antoni Gaudí, provides insight into the Catalan’s imaginative world, while Casa Vicens, in Barcelona’s Gracia neighborhood, has recently opened as a museum after being heavily remodeled – a young Gaudí designed it to be a holiday home for the Vicens family 130 years ago. 9. Surf in Lanzarote It’s no surprise that Lanzarote is considered to be Europe’s Hawaii. Wind, waves for all skill levels and great surf schools make this Canary Island a top surf spot. Calima Surf School, one of the best-known schools, offers classes for all levels. Specialized instructors teach classes no larger than six people at Famara cove in Teguise, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Surfing season is typically between September and the first week of April, but there are waves to be caught no matter the time of the year.

until the cheese has completely melted. Remove from the heat. In a baking dish, pour half the lasagne sauce over half of the vegetables and top with lasagne sheets. Cover with half the béchamel sauce and repeat. Cover the top layer generously with grated cheese and place in the oven to cook for approximately 45 minutes. Serve with a leafy salad or garlic bread just out of the oven. Prep: 20 Mins Cook: 1 Hr 5 Mins Serves: 4

.com Semana Santa – Holy Week – In Cartagena

Of all of Cartagena´s traditions, the most deeply rooted is Holy Week. The event is marked by a unique series of processions that bear no resemblance to anything in the rest of Spain. The uniqueness lies in the spectacular nature of the processional floats –veritable edifices of light and flowers built in the authentic Cartagena style–, the artistry of the images carried upon them, the rich gold embroidery and the harmony of the procession of penitents who march in perfect order and total silence to the rhythmic beat of drums and traditional processional pieces.

Another feature which has both defined and distinguished Cartagena’s Holy Week, as well as making the processions all the more spectacular, is the traditional rivalry between the two main lay brotherhoods. In their eagerness to improve, these brotherhoods, popularly known as ‘marrajos’ and ‘californios’, are the main reason why the Passion processions are as magnificent as they are. Together with the brothers of the Succour and the Resurrection, marrajos and californios, who both compete with and complement each other, share the task of bringing the story of Christ’s passion alive. Following the chronological order of events, they help transform the streets of Cartagena into a mystical urban landscape whose foundations are the solid columns of hooded penitents and the shifting altars of processional floats. The Brotherhoods The participants in the Cartagena processions belong to four different brotherhoods which (in order of appearance over what is really a ten-day week) are the brotherhoods of Christ of the Succour, Our Lord Jesus at the Hour of His Arrest (californios), Our Lord Jesus of Nazareth (marrajos) and Our Lord Jesus Resurrected. This division into four distinct brotherhoods is somewhat deceptive as, unlike in other towns, none of the brotherhoods is restricted to carrying just one or two processional images or to taking part in just one procession; rather, they are subdivided into various independently organized groups within each of the larger Brotherhoods. These groups are then responsible for the floats which are carried in each of the processions organized by the different brotherhoods, processions which, in the case of marrajos and californios, are not restricted to a single day. Sacred Images The images of the Passion are the hub around which the processions are organized. In these polychrome wooden sculptures are mixed the desire for realism and a devout sense of the ideal. The realism is necessary for the narration and enactment of the evangelical story of Christ’s passion. The symbolic idealization is what prompts the people to clothe its images in finery, sumptuous gold embroidery and crowns of precious stones and metals. The only sculptural details to be seen on the clothed images are the visible body parts: head, hands and feet. The remainder is a more or less complex frame designed to give shape to the clothes to be draped upon it. The images can be displayed either separately or in groups of sculptures. Cartagena’s Holy Week brotherhoods are the heirs to the rich artistic legacy of previous centuries. Amongst the images and sculptural ensembles they inherited were several pieces by Francisco Salzillo (18th century), though most of them were lost during the Civil War. This loss was nonetheless an incentive for the brotherhoods to put together the most important collection of religious sculptures in the whole of twentieth-century Spain. Together with sculptors from the past, such as Salzillo, the images include work by Mariano Benlliure, José Capuz, Federico Collaut Valera and Juan González Moreno, all of whom are fundamental to an understanding of how the figurative arts have developed in Spain in the last hundred years. Work such as the Descent from the Cross by Capuz (1930) or the Holy Burial by González Moreno (1958) continues to be a reference-point for contemporary sculpture. Together with these now classic artists, other more recent sculptors have contributed their own work to a substantial heritage which can be viewed all year round in the different chapels and, of course, in the processions, where it can be seen in all its glory.

Processions Cartagena-Style All of the Holy Week processions in Cartagena follow the same basic pattern which, while giving each a distinct identity, is the basis of a truly Cartagena concept of the processions. The procession is divided into «tercios» (or «regiments») which are grouped around each of the processional floats. The regiment is made up of penitents, all members of the same group, wearing «capirotes» («pointed hoods»); three of the penitents lead the procession with the group’s standard. Following them are two symmetrical lines of penitents who keep time with a «hachote», a kind of long stick-like lantern which is generally decorated with finely wrought silver. At the rear of the regiment come the drummers and the band, just before the float bearing the image or sculptural ensemble of the Passion. Music is thus a key element in each of the group’s processions, both accompanying the step of the regiment of penitents and adding solemnity to the slow passage of the sacred images through the streets. The Cartagena processions have all the trappings of a concert, as music is conceived aesthetically, not as mere accompaniment but as what governs the rhythmic motion of penitents and float. Hence the continued importance of the processional marches and the reason why each of the regiments has maintained its own particular repertoire for the image of its devotion. TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Billions returned to Sky Atlantic for a third season this week with a cavalcade of characters all trying to bring each down in the seedy New York world of financial wheeler-dealing, politics, and the law. Don’t even bother trying to remember every plotline (and character) from the first two series as everything comes at you thick and fast. Wednesday’s season opener saw the obnoxious(but fun) character of Bobby Axelrod (Damien Lewis) trying to preserve all the dosh at his Axe Capital company after facing legal charges involving a firm that he helped to bring down in the last series. He pulls a neat move, whilst his chief enemy, prosecutor Chuck Rhodes (Paul Giamatti), has been sidelined, especially since his wife works for Axelrod, but he’s also tilting to become the New York state governor, so the stakes have been raised. Just sit back and enjoy the ride that is Billions in a glossy display of outrageousness, which I suppose in these days of the Trump

The Battle Resumes

adminstration might seem a tad boring. Lewis and Giamatti are great, as is everybody else, but to fully appreciate Billions, you do really need to go back to the very beginning to check out everything that has happened, and there’s a heck of a lot! Don’t worry about all the economic terminology, but just watch everybody run around like headless chickens at times. Another one word title series, Episodes, returns for

the final series on BBC 2 this Friday evening, and for reasons better known to the Beeb, they’ve hung on for ages to screen it (it went out in the States last summer). It’s the show that won Matt le Blanc an Emmy for his starring role as himself, and this final run of Episodes is the funniest yet, as le Blanc continues to host a wonderfully awful US TV show where he ends up getting a bit too close with one of the contenders!

The final instalment of Episodes is really neat and finishes it up very tidly with a nice ending that leaves you satisfied. I’ve loved every minute of it over the years with the leading trio of Le Blanc, Stephen Mangan, and Tamsin Greig all playing to each others strengths for some hilarious moments, yet British audiences have curiously shunned it. Perhaps they prefer the drivel of Still Open All Hours?

Series one of The Good Doctor finishes on Sky Living this week, and this has been the big standout hit of the 2017/18 US network TV season, with Britain’s Freddie Highmore giving a heartfelt portrayal of the young hospital medic with autism. Series two was ordered by ABC weeks ago, and I have only have one slight critique in that there seemed to be too much focus on other characters in the later part of the season.

The strength of the series is all about Highmore leading from the front and his relationship with his mentor Aaron Glassman, played by West Wing legend Richard Schiff. Otherwise, a supremely enjoyable drama that thoroughly deserves all the plaudits. Coming soon to Sky Living is the new CBS Alan Cumming-starring drama, Instinct, and the Scottish actor is the big reason to watch this otherwise bogstandard police procedural. Cumming takes the whole show and steals it, as a senior ex-CIA operative/profiler who now works as a writer and psycology lecturer. In a welcome US primetime drama first, we have a lead character who is gay and married and happy, but the plots look like they’ve been ripped out of old editions of another CBS show, Elementary, and I’ve guessed the villain almost straight away in the two episodes I’ve seen. If you admire Cumming, like I do, you’ll still watch it, but after his big success in The Good Wife, he deserves better material than this.

Friday Jimmy is embroiled in a power game. Meanwhile, Laurel covers her true feelings for Bob. Elsewhere, Vanessa discovers her fate. Will it be good news or bad?

Monday Bob is left feeling jealous when he sees a man flirt with Laurel. He vents his frustrations at the cafe and ends up breaking a water pipe, getting himself soaked. When Laurel spots Bob, they soon end up kissing passionately. Meanwhile, Rebecca invites everyone round for lunch to say thank you for their recent help. Elsewhere, Joe’s plan comes together.

Tuesday Brenda returns from her trip, so Laurel and Bob both feign normality. However, soon Arthur arrives and gives Bob’s jacket to Brenda, explaining that he left it at theirs. Later, opportunity strikes when Laurel leaves her wallet on a table and Brenda pockets it. Brenda has revenge on her mind, but will Laurel be left out of pocket? Meanwhile, Priya is frustrated that she can’t find a job and has to resort to dressing as a chicken. Elsewhere, Ross makes an apology. Wednesday Aaron is shocked to find Syd – the man who was broken out of the prison van with Adam – holding baby Seb.

SOAPS

Thursday 29th March 2018 Syd is angry and threatens Aaron, blackmailing him for £100,000. Meanwhile, Bernice vents to Gabby about Rodney, but Daz overhears them and assumes they’re talking about him. He’s gutted. Elsewhere, Priya is still frustrated she can’t find a job and is angry when she realises Jai has been interfering. Also today, Brenda makes a rash decision, and Megan makes a discovery.

Thursday Cain and Robert take the Syd situation into their own hands and beat him up, but they’re playing with fire. Later on, Robert receives a video call from Aaron and is thrown to see a live video of him gagged and bound to a chair. Have they made the situation worse? Meanwhile, Lachlan is worried about Rebecca going to see a hypnotherapist to help with her memory problems. He waits outside the hypnotherapist office, panicked over what on earth she is remembering. Elsewhere, Daz wakes up with regret.

Time is running out for Aaron. Will Robert and Cain manage to pay off Syd and get Aaron safely home? Meanwhile, Bernice fumes to realise Daz went out with Bob and Dan instead of spending time with her. He also has to explain his new hair do. Elsewhere, Lachlan fears that his secret will come out.

Unfortunately, Sharon has been secretly drinking and it’s not long before she’s rowing with Mel.

Is this the end of Eileen, Phelan, or both?

Friday A panicked Phelan throws his passport and a few clothes in a bag and prepares to leave, but Eileen catches him and asks where he is going. Phelan lies that he is popping out for fresh air, leaving her alone in the cottage. Eileen follows Phelan with a picnic to try and sort things out, but is angry to find him about to sail away in the boat. Furious, she accidentally drops her hamper – complete with car keys – in the sea. Back in Weatherfield, Adam has arrived at the police station to represent Gary and they are stunned to discover the news about the bodies. Adam tells Tim, who leaves a voicemail message for Eileen. Phelan is comforting Eileen, who has cut her foot, but when she gets a few bars of signal on her phone, the message from Tim comes through. Horrified, she tries to persuade oblivious Phelan to go back to the boat, but as she heads towards the harbour to try and call Tim back, she is unaware he has followed her.

As Eileen waits desperately by the lighthouse for Tim to answer his phone, Phelan grabs it off her just in time to hear Tim trying to warn her. Terrified, Eileen shouts out where she is, but Phelan throws the phone into the sea. Eileen confronts Phelan, calling him a liar, murderer and a rapist. Eileen then threatens to throw the boat keys over the sea wall to stop him getting away. The couple tussle and the rusty harbour railing gives way.

Monday Details of what happened between Phelan and Eileen at the lighthouse reach the residents of Weatherfield. Shock reverberates across the cobbles as questions are asked and crimes are uncovered.

Friday Hunter continues to show his disapproval of Jack around Mel, deliberately making digs about him. Mel once again promises her son that she’s not looking for a relationship at the moment. When Jack refuses to give up and keeps pursuing Mel, scheming Hunter comes up with a new way to manipulate the situation. Will Hunter regret his plotting when it backfires on him?

Shona speaks to David about the fact they haven’t been intimate for some time. She asks him to join her in bed. David says he will follow Shona up, but once she heads upstairs, he gets his coat and leaves. Wednesday Finding David asleep on the sofa, Shona tells him that he needs to stop messing her about. Soon afterwards, David quizzes Maria about HIV tests, before heading to an STI clinic. He gives them Gary’s name, but when they start asking about his recent sexual history, David bottles it and leaves.

Shona demands answers from David, but he can’t tell her the truth so asks her to leave. Roy agrees to let a devastated Shona stay with him and Carla. Later, Josh tries to intimidate David in the Rovers back yard. Elsewhere, while dressed as a giant fish, Chesney is horrified when Dev accidentally breaks the zip, trapping him in the suit.

Monday Ted is grieving following Joyce’s sad death last week. When Bernadette arrives to check up on him, she helps him to set the ball rolling with registering Joyce’s death and making plans for the funeral. Ted also admits that he hasn’t told the children about Joyce yet, so Bernadette urges him to make the call. Meanwhile, although Mel has warned Hunter to stay away from Phil, he ignores her and sneaks off to join Louise at a big Mitchell family lunch that Sharon has arranged. When Mel finds out about Hunter going behind her back, she refuses to stand for it and arrives at the Mitchell house to bring him home.

Thursday Tension continues to build between Ted and Judith as they make plans for Joyce’s funeral. Judith deliberately goes against her father’s wishes for what Joyce should be buried in. Bernadette becomes concerned over the way that Ted is being treated, but she struggles to make Judith see sense. Meanwhile, as the Slater backlash continues, Kat feels guilty for how it’s affecting Stacey. Kat tries to ask Ian for help in turning things around, but he’s having none of it. Later, the Slaters continue to get a hard time at the pub.

When Gaskell relentlessly pursues a risky operation for a high profile case, Roxanna is concerned that his quest for innovation is blinding him to the patient’s best interests.

Meanwhile, Fletch is unimpressed with new CEO Abigail’s treatment plan for a young patient and challenges her to prove she’s a worthy successor to the mighty Jac Naylor.

The Generation Game

Ready or Not

Saturday - BBC One Comedy game show featuring unsuspecting members of the public who face sur-

prise challenges while going about their daily lives. From the supermarket to the seaside, Blackpool Tower to Birmingham city centre, the

Attenborough's Wonder of Eggs

challenges, culminating in the famous conveyor belt. They are joined by guests Lorraine Kelly, Richard Osman and Martin Kemp as the contestants tackle sausage-making, plate spinning, and teapot throwing.

Ordeal by Innocence Sunday - BBC One

Saturday - BBC Two David Attenborough has a passion for birds' eggs, which protect the young from the outside world at the same time as allowing them to breathe and are strong enough to withstand the full weight of an incubating parent

and weak enough to allow a chick to break free. In this documentary, the broadcaster reveals the secrets of birds' eggs from creation to hatching, exploring how they are made, the reasons behind their shape and their intrinsic purpose.

Three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel, starring Bill Nighy. The former husband of a murdered heiress prepares to remarry 18 months after her adopted son was convicted of killing her, before dying himself in a prison brawl. However, the wedding preparations are disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious scientist who has returned from an expedition to the Arctic - and who claims to be able to prove the supposed murderer is innocent.

ADVICE: Bobbie wanted to get a tablet to use to watch TV

ADVICE: Peita wanted to know more about Amazon’s Alexa products.

Hello, I wonder if you can help two technophobes please. We want to buy an Android tablet, to be able to watch TV programmes if possible.Could you please advise or recommend the best one to buy. Look forward to hearing from you. Colin and Bobbie.

Hi Bobbie, Pretty much any android tablet will give you the ability to stream movies and TV shows. You can find them in most local electrical stores. The more expen sive the tablet (an unscientific but easy to compare guide) the quicker they tend to be (both quicker or larger screen). More of an important question would be ‘how” to stream this sort of content. Of course you will need an Internet connection but you will also need to either use some software to hide your IP address (if you’re hoping to use some of the UK TV ‘catch up’ servic es?). I like the company www.my-private-network.co.uk, but, of course, there are others out there.

Hi, I have been thinking of getting an Alexa [There is now a German made one [Auna] on Amazon.ES. But I have read that a certain amount of re-configuring needs to be done for it to work. And some people say that it works without!! Do you know anything about them, and what has to be for it to be user-friendly?

Hi Peita, we love our Amazon Dot’s – we have three of them! I don’t know any thing about the device you mention but can talk to you about Amazon’s version with Alexa (who ‘speaks’ only English). The Amazon Dot is reasonably easy to set up, although because they are only sold in the UK there are a couple of hoops that you need to jump through if you want her to work here in Spain (in that you have to have a UK Amazon account to buy her and you have to have a UK credit card linked to a UK address if you want to use Amazon Music Unlimited through her). The setup is really just connecting her to your Internet connection which can be done using a mobile phone or tablet and its pretty straightforward. You can find more information about the Amazon Alexa products and their review on our website at https://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/amazon-echo-dotamazing-voice-recognition-device.

DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE 1993 EUROPEAN GP Tickets start at just £10 for the Friday practice and qualifying day

One of the most memorable events in the history of Donington Park, the rain-soaked 1993 European Grand Prix, will be celebrated at this year’s Donington Historic Festival (May 4, 5 and 6) with on-track F1 car demonstrations on the Saturday and Sunday of the event, plus static displays on all three days. In addition, DHF visitors will be invited to get involved by sharing their own memories of the race before and during the Festival. The 25th anniversary activities add a further exciting dimension to the event at which visitors will enjoy three days of world-class historic motorsport from an outstanding line-up of grids featuring an incredibly diverse range of racing machines spanning nine decades. The Festival’s anniversary theme celebrates that unforgettable day in April 1993, when the crowds flocked to Donington Park as the circuit played host to its first Grand Prix in 55 years. Torrential rain made the track treacherous as, starting from 4th position, Ayrton Senna battled it out with Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher to win by an incredible 80 seconds.

The F1 cars on show pay tribute in particular to Ayrton Senna, and were either driven by him or against him during his career up to 1993. They include: The Toleman TG-184-01 Hart Turbo in which Senna caused a sensation for Friday practice at the 1984 British GP A Camel Lotus/Judd 101/3 campaigned in 1989 by Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima Gerhard Berger’s 1992 Canadian GP-winning McLaren MP4/7A-8 (courtesy of the Donington Collection museum) A 1993 Benetton B193B raced that year by Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese The McLaren MP4/8 that was Senna’s test car for the 1993 Donington Park race (courtesy of the Donington Collection museum) Online tickets offer great discounts over buying on the gate, starting at £10 for the Friday practice and qualifying day (£15 on the gate). ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROPELS MERCEDESBENZ SPRINTER TO A WINNING START

The all-new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter won its first UK accolade – despite the fact that the first examples will not reach this country until later this year. Expert judges at the 2018 VansA2Z Van Fleet World Honours highlighted the vehicle’s ground-breaking on-board technology, and the benefits it offers to drivers and operators alike. The new Sprinter took the coveted Editor’s Award at a ceremony in Twickenham, south-west London. Announcing the decision, Van Fleet World Editor Dan Gilkes said: “We have yet to drive the third-generation MercedesBenz Sprinter, so can’t judge it in this year’s awards. “However, we have had an in-depth look at the technology, both inside and surrounding this important new van. Mercedes really is taking a new approach to Sprinter, offering customers a massive range of solutions to meet the needs of a wide variety of industry sectors.” He continued: “From built-in connectivity, through in-house telematics and a range of Mercedes PRO location-based packages, the company will be working ever closer with van customers in the future.”

Steve Bridge, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK, declared: “We are very proud to be collecting this VansA2Z Van Fleet World Honours Editors’ Award. “The new Sprinter is a genuine game-changer, and it is a stunning testament to its capabilities that it should have won such prestigious recognition well before it’s even reached the UK. The vehicle’s Mercedes PRO connect and MBUX technology, in particular, will set new standards when it comes to keeping businesses moving.” Like previous generations of the multi-award-winning Mercedes-Benz workhorse, the next Sprinter – which is priced from £24,350* excl. VAT, and available to order from June production – raises the bar in the large van segment. Since its launch in 1995, the Sprinter has defined and re-defined a whole segment numerous times. It has notched a succession of technological ‘firsts’ including the ESP stability system, Crosswind Assist, the Euro VI emissions standard, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, and collected more than 80 industry awards.

CLEVER KIDS COME UP WITH GREEN WAY TO KEEP WINDSCREEN CLEAN

It’s an idea that could one day help save billions of litres of water. * Instead of simply wiping raindrops off our car windscreens, why not collect and reuse the water via the washer jets? Brother and Sister Daniel and Lara Krohn were travelling in the family car last summer when the heavens opened. But when their dad Gerd, who was driving, tried to clear away the smears, the reservoir was empty – and the windscreen just got dirtier and dirtier. The two clever kids’ idea to capture the raindrops and reuse them won first prize in a local science competition and has now been developed for a full-sized test car. “It was a downpour. There was water everywhere – except in the windscreen wiper reservoir. My sister and I thought this was really funny and then the answer suddenly seemed obvious. Simply reuse the rainwater,” said 11-year-old Daniel, from Jülich, in Germany. “We couldn’t believe that no-one had thought of it before,” added 9-year-old Lara. “To try it out, we took apart our toy fire engine and fixed the pump to a model car inside an aquarium. Then we added a filtering system to ensure the water was clean. It just worked really well.” Engineers at Ford who heard about the idea were so intrigued that they offered to

install a full sized device into a Ford S-MAX test car. To collect the water, rubber pipes connected the bottom of the windscreen to the reservoir. “Daniel and Lara’s idea has been staring drivers in the face for decades – and it has taken one moment of ingenuity to bring it to life. In less than five minutes of rainfall the washer reservoir is completely full,” said Theo Geuecke, supervisor, Body Exterior Hardware, Ford of Europe. Water usage by vehicles is expected to increase as additional cameras and sensors also need to be kept clean. Ford engineers are already working on ways to capture water, via rain and condensation, including a way of gathering moisture from the air and filtering it into drinking water – On the-Go H20. “What a brilliant idea! Innovations like these are essential to make the water we have go further. We will all need to change our behaviour to waste less water, but we’ll also need clever new bits of kit like the one Daniel and Lara have designed,” said Nicci Russell, managing director, Waterwise. * Drivers use around 20 litres each year to keep their windscreens clean. With 291 million cars on European roads, if such a “Krohn” system were in every car, it would save almost six billion litres of water each year.

SEAT will launch its first electric car in 2020 The brand will sell its first fully electric model in 2020, with a range of 500 kilometres SEAT has just announced comprehensive plans for an extensive electric offensive, that is set to begin with a new model in 2020, that will boast 500 kilometres (310 miles) of range. The car makers' officials have also said that there will be a new car launched every six months starting now, up to 2020, in order to renew the lineup. The first two vehicles will be the SEAT Tarraco and the CUPRA Ateca, which are going on sale at the end of 2018. Next year the new generation SEAT Leon will be available in dealerships with two variants, the five-door model, and the ST family-sized version. 2020 will see SEAT’s first fully electric vehicle, built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and featuring a range of 500 kilometers and, for the first time, the addition of a CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) in the SEAT model line-up. This was announced today by SEAT President Luca de Meo at the annual results presentation to the media held in Madrid. SEAT is taking a step forward in boosting electric mobility, which includes the hybrid version of the new generation Leon, also in 2020. In addition, the brand

will remain committed to vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) as well as internal combustion engines. The company has enjoyed good results as of late. After achieving its best results in history in 2016, its profit after tax in 2017 grew to 281 million euros, which is 21.3% more than the previous year (2016: 232 million), excluding the extraordinary effect of the sale of the VW Finance, S.A. subsidiary to Volkswagen AG. Furthermore, the operating profit amounted to 116 million euros (2016: 143 million) as a result of higher volumes and higher investment activities due to new products. SEAT’s turnover reached a record figure of 9.552 billion euros in 2017, which is 11.1% more than the year prior (2016: 8.597 billion). This amount was driven by the company’s sales momentum, posting the highest volume since 2001 with 468,400 vehicle deliveries making SEAT one of the fastest growing brands in Europe, and an improved vehicle mix led by the Ateca, a model with a better contribution margin. Since 2013, SEAT’s turnover has gone up close to 50%.

Betting On The Masters Tiger Woods may have failed to qualify for last week’s WGC-Match Play, and he's not in the Houston Open, which starts later today. But that is not stopping the 42-year-old from going into next week’s US Masters at Augusta as the tournament favourite. In the latest Masters odds update, Woods continues to own the lowest figure at 9/1. Woods, who is seeking his fifth green jacket, will be making just his second appearance at the Masters since 2013. In his final tune-up for Augusta National, the 14-time major winner finished tied fifth in last month’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. Woods’ form has led to many fans scampering to try and get a ticket to see him in action at Augusta. As a result, ticket prices for the event are at an all-time high. “Tiger has always had an effect on prices,” Kyle Zorn, a sales agent for TickPick.com, told Augusta’s official website. Thursday is currently the highest-priced ticket due to it being the only day fans are “guaranteed” to see Woods play but Zorn explains if the golf legend makes the cut then Sunday tickets “will go through the roof Right behind Woods in the betting are Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy at 10/1. Both Johnson and McIlroy were early exits at the WGC Match Play, while Thomas advanced to the semi-finals. All three have won on the PGA Tour this sea-

The Sunshine Radio Winter Petanca League staged a presentation night at Domino’s Bar in Los Altos, with the overall cup winners being the Guardamar Petanca Club (pictured), with the El Mirador Hawks coming second. Other winners included Domino McCoys taking the plate, and division one champions were Rocajuna.

Amigos Belgas took the second division title, and it was a double success for them as they lifted the third division as well. There’s been barely time to take stock, as the Summer League started yesterday (Wednesday) and more details about getting involved with petanca are available at the website, www.sunshinepetanca.

son, with Thomas leading the tour in earnings. Jordan Spieth, 2015 Masters winner and two-time runner-up, follows at 12/1, with Justin Rose coming in at 14/1. Bubba Watson, who was listed at 50/1 just a month ago, has seen his odds plummet with victories in Los Angeles and Austin. Watson heads a group including Phil Mickelson and Jason Day at 16/1. Other notables include Spaniards Jon Rahm at 18/1 and defending champ Sergio Garcia at 25/1, whilst Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama comes in at 30/1. The Masters is assured its smallest field in at least 20 years, with no more than 88 players. Cameron Smith of Australia was among four players added to the field on Monday from the top 50 in the world ranking that is published one week before the Masters. Also getting in through the world ranking was Satoshi Kodaira of Japan, Dylan Frittelli of South Africa and Chez Reavie. Reavie is the first American to earn a spot through the final ranking cutoff since 2012. That brings the field to 87 who are expected to play. That includes U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka, who is recovering from a wrist injury. One spot is available to this week's Houston Open winner if he is not already eligible. The 1998 Masters had 88 players, with only 86 in 1997.

Officials Probed

Rugby Europe is seeking more information before taking a decision on the performance of the officials in the Belgium-Spain World Cup qualifier that prompted calls by Spanish rugby authorities for a replay. Spain’s rugby federation appealed for a replay because of the performance of Romanian referee Vlad Iordachescu in the 18-10 defeat by Belgium on March 18, which allowed Romania to qualify for the 2019 World Cup at Spain’s expense. The body began its analysis of the match in Brussels on Friday, saying it regretted the controversy surrounding the fixture.

Some ugly confrontations broke out at the final whistle as members of the Spanish coaching staff tried to restrain their team. A win over Belgium on a mud-caked pitch in Brussels would have secured Spain second place behind already-qualified Georgia in the Rugby Europe Championship standings and a ticket to Japan. Rugby Europe said that a new meeting has been arranged for today (Thursday). An online petition on change.org calling for the match to be replayed has gained almost 44,000 signatures.

An Utter Shambles

CD TORREVIEJA 0 FB REDOVAN CF 3 Even by CD Torrevieja’s hapless standards, this was a new low in the club’s history, as they could only field a starting line up of ten players, and with four going off injured (two of which looked extremely suspect in terms of the call), the referee called it a day on the hour mark (pictured above). Apparently players from Torrevieja CF who were “going to make up the numbers” were stopped from getting involved on Saturday morning, and with Walid and Vincent out through suspension, the club were left short for their Sunday afternoon clash with Redovan. CD Torrevieja did see it fit to issue an angry statement on Sunday slamming Torrevieja CF, accusing it of “treachery”, and accusing it on going back on an agreement. Having said that, no statement has been forthcoming on more serious matters, namely what is going on at the club and why it has so few players in the first place, and what is happening over any potential new investors/owners. Players have been dispensed with by coach Pedreno (pictured below during Sunday’s match) in a mixture of cost-cutting at the cash-strapped club, as well removing those who he feels have just not made the effortk, though he would have brought in most of them himself. The complete lack of public communication about what is happening is absolutely breath-

taking at a club that a decade ago had the turnstiles clicking at a quick rate and harboured genuine ambitions of getting into Segunda Division B. CD Torrevieja now almost certainly face an investigation by the Valencian FA into the circumstances concerning the Redovan match. They may face a fine and/or a points deduction, which could see them catapulted into a relegation battle, depending on how severe the penalty is. They currently lie 10th in the Preferente Group Four table, and they at least have the knowledge that the Easter break will not see them have another scheduled match until Saturday April 7th when they go to bottom club Petrelense. For the record, Nacho (12 mins), Aleo (17 mins) and Guille (39 mins) deservedly scored for Redovan, in a contest that the referee mercifully blew the whistle on in the 60th minute, after Torry went below the minimum number of seven players needed to carry on with the match. It’s hardly surprising that Torrevieja just have a handful of hardcore supporters left, as everybody else in recent years (and months) have drifted off to follow more successful and proactive clubs elsewhere in the region that appreciate what they get.

Thader’s Crucial Win

CD THADER 3 ALICANTE UNIVERSITY 0 This was a must-win match for Thader to restart their bid to get into the end of season play-offs in Preferente Group Four, and they duly delivered at their Rojales ground on Sunday. It was all rather tight though, as goals from Rubén Sanz in the 89th

minute and Dani Lucas in added time, sealed the deal after Alicante’s Dani scored an own goal to put Thader ahead in the 21st minute. The bottom line is that Thader are now two points behind the third play-off slot, with Alicante University and Villajoyosa both on 48

points. Thader were also helped by Villajoyosa being held to a two-all draw by UD Ilicitana, and the Elchebased team will be Thader’s next opponents following the Easter break. That match will be at at UD Ilicitana over the weekend of April 7th/8th.

Almoradi Victory

VILLENA CF 0 CD ALMORADI 2 This was an excellent victory for Almoradi away to a team trying to get into playoff contention, with the Villena club and their supporters fuming at the quality of the referee and his assistants. On the back of a draw against Thader, which should have been a win, Almoradi again showed their recently improved credentials against a good side,

and started brightly at Villena on Sunday. They duly got their reward on the half hour mark with an excellent shot from Sergi Murcia from outside the area that beat the Villena keeper. The second half was a very different story as Villena dominated and were then down to 10 men as they had a player sent off for a second yellow card after an hour.

Almoradi concentrated on counter attacks and Confi got their second in injury time, and three more points in their fight against relegation. Their next match, after the Easter break, will be on Sunday April 8th, as they entertain the team just above them in the Preferente Group Four table, Orihuela B, who they won at earlier in the season.

Sleepy Monte Win Orihuela Fightback

Sport

Ilicitanos Draw

TORREVIEJA CF 1 CD MONTESINOS 3 CD Montesinos picked up their expected victory at the Primera Regional Group Eight bottom club on Sunday to record a league double over a team that have just had two wins this season, but it was a struggle in the first half, with Monte’s producing some of their poorest football of the season. Five matches remain in the season, with an enforced break this weekend for Easter, as Monte stay third in the table, but they are 11 points behind second-placed UD Horadada. This lunchtime encounter felt more like a home match for Montesinos as their travelling fans swamped what the tiny handful of Torry CF supporters. The game though did not go as expected, as sloppy defending led to Torrevieja CF taking an early first half lead, and it should have been more for the home side, as they hit the crossbar and Aitor made a great save, along with Manu clearing off the line. In fact Monte’s first scoring chance did not come until the 20th minute, and in one of their worst performances of the season, they went in one-nil down at half-time. They woke up in the second half, and perhaps they had forgotten to move the clocks forward for summer time, as Maccan levelled it with an overhead kick into the back of the net. By the midway point of the second period it was all over with a Vaz tap-in and George header putting Monte three-one ahead, with Torry running out of steam. It was hardly a vintage Montesinos performance, especially in the first half, but they now have an Easter rest ahead of entertaining seventh-placed CD Dolores on Sunday April 8th.

Zidane Stalls

Orihuela had to work hard for their four-two Valencia Regional third division victory over Paterna at the weekend, which put them second in the table, with Levante being held to a home draw by Torre Levante. Goals for Paterna on either side of the interval asked some serious questions of Orihuela, who took the lead through some excellent individual skills from Nico (pictured above celebrating) in just the 10th minute the Los Arcos stadium last Saturday. Orihuela dominated the first half, but Paternal through Richard levelled up the scores in the last piece of action before the break. Paternal piled on the pressure after the interval, and Jero put the visitors in front in the 51st minute, forcing the hand of Orihuela coach Miguel Ángel Villafaina, as he replaced defender Fran Martínez, with striker Antonio. Orihuela got a break in the 64th minute as Paterna defender Nico was shown a controversial second yellow card, and he had to be sent off. Just a minute later a terrific free kick from Brian found the back of the net for the home side to equalise. Three minutes later substitute Antonio put Orihuela in front (celebrations pictured below), and an injury time counter-attack saw Benja make it four.

With Easter this weekend, the latest deck of third division fixtures were scheduled for last night (Wednesday) with Orihuela away to struggling Almazora. With The Courier going to press a day early because of the holiday, a report will be carried in next week’s edition. Elsewhere, Crevillente won one-all at bottom club Recambios Colon thanks to a Samu goal, and had a home match scheduled yesterday with fourth-placed La Nucia. Elche Ilicitano sat out the weekend fixtures due to an odd number of teams in the league, and though they could have dropped into the relegation area, the sides below them duly oblige by failing to win. They were scheduled to go to thirdbottom Bunol yesterday, who were only three points behind them in the table.

CD EBRO 1 ELCHE CF 1 The last few minutes proved to be most interesting in Sunday’s lunchtime encounter in Zaragoza, with Elche saving a point through Gonzalo Verdú in the 89th minute. There was lot of huffing and puffing but little quality from either side in what turned out to be a physical clash played on an artificial surface that didn’t really suit the Ilicitanos. The fun really started in the 79th minute when Bolo scrambled the ball into the back of the net for Ebro from a corner, and then both sides really got into it, with chances at both ends, before Verdú struck at the end. It wasn’t over yet, with Javi Flores in four minutes of added time having a great chance to wrap up all three points for the Ilicitanos. Elche dropped to third in the Segunda Division B table, with Villarreal climbing above them, and they now come for a proverbial six pointer to the Martinez Valero stadium this Sunday, with a 6.00 pm kick-off.

Loss Of Faith

Perez Plans Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane still hasn't given club president Florentino Pérez a definitive answer over his future at the Santiago Bernabéu, causing Los Blancos officials to draft up a list of potential replacements. The French coach was under serious pressure at the beginning of the season after a catastrophic start to the campaign - by Real Madrid's high standards at least. However, victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League has helped lift some of the pressure off Zidane's shoulders and the former Real Madrid midfielder now appears to be in charge of his own destiny. The 45-year-old is still yet to inform his employers whether he intends to stay on at the Bernabéu next season but the Marca newspaper reports that Zidane has no managerial ambitions outside of Real Madrid. Marca also adds that the club's hierarchy have been lining up potential replacements to succeed Zidane if the Frenchman decides to leave at the end of the season - a decision which will likely rest with Madrid's success against Juventus in the Champions League. Despite potential glory in Europe this season, Los Blancos are still well off the pace in La Liga, sitting 15 points behind Barcelona and four points adrift of their city rivals, Atlético Madrid. They return to La Liga action this Saturday away to struggling Las Palmas.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly keen to sign several players if a move for Neymar falls through. Perez has targeted Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar to be the talismanic forward that will lead Real into a new era. But it seems the Real president is planning in case a deal for the 26-year-old fails to materialise this summer though. According to Don Balon, Perez is after Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea as well as Real Sociedad’s Alvaro Odriozola and PSG’s Marquinhos. Don Balon claim Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski is the man being lined up to replace Karim Benzema up front, and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is also wanted.

Gerard Pique believes Pep Guardiola lost faith in him before he left his role as Barcelona boss in 2012. Guardiola, whose Manchester City team are currently 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League, led Barcelona to three La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues and two Copa del Rey triumphs before announcing his decision to leave the club at the end of the season in April 2012. "Everything seemed to fall apart in 2012. I don't know why. Perhaps I had lost the fear that drove me to that level. But for whatever reason, I started questioning myself. As the season went on, Pep started to lose faith in me," Pique said in The Players Tribune. "For the first three seasons, we had a phenomenal relationship. I still revere Pep as a manager. But the truth is, it was an extremely hard time.” La Liga leaders Barcelona return to action after the international break this Saturday when they entertain Sevilla.

Valencia Victors

Valverde Wins

Ethiopia’s Netsanet Gudeta broke Kenya’s dominance in the World Half Marathon Championships by smashing the women’s only race world record in Valencia City on Saturday. Kenyan women had swept the medals at the previous two championships but Gudeta pushed on alone from 15 kilometres to win in a time of one hour, six minutes and 11 seconds. The 27-year-old finished a comfortable 43 seconds ahead of Kenyan Joyciline Jepkosgei, who holds the overall world record of 1:04:51. Jepkosgei’s compatriot Pauline Kamulu came third. The previous record for a single-sex race was set by Lornah Kiplagat in Udine, Italy in 2007. Earlier, Geoffrey Kamworor (pictured below) won his third successive title in the men’s event in a time of 1:00:02. The Kenyan, who won silver in the 10,000 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, was followed over the line by Abraham Cheroben of Bahrain and Aron Kifle of Eritrea.

Murcia's Alejandro Valverde won the Tour of Catalunya for the second consecutive year after his closest competitor fell near the end of Sunday's final stage in Barcelona. Valverde cruised to victory to get his third Catalunya title after Egan Bernal of Colombia crashed with less than 10 kilometres to go in the 155-kilometre stage won by Simon Yates of Britain. Bernal, who entered the final stage 16 seconds behind Valverde, fell out of contention after he couldn't avoid contact with another rider who fell just in front of him. The Colombian hit the ground hard and needed to be attended by doctors while still down. He was later taken into an ambulance with an apparent shoulder injury. Valverde ended ninth on Sunday, securing a 29-second overall advantage over Movistar teammate Nairo Quintana of Colombia. Pierre Latour of France finished third overall, 47 seconds behind Valverde. Spaniard Marc Soler was second in Sunday's seventh stage, with Latour third. "I did not even expect to feel this good," Valverde said. "I think I can say I'm in better shape than last year."

Learning Curve

18-year-old Nicola Kuhn became the second youngest Spaniard to win an ATP Masters match when he defeated Darian King from Barbados in the first round of the Miami Masters last week. The Torrevieja teenager, who was given a wildcard for the event, then faced the world number 15, Italy's Fabio Fognini, and gave it all he got before losing 6-2, 6-4 in 67 minutes. Kuhn suffered a injury to his left foot which led to a fiveminute timeout between the two sets, and more than held his own in the second set until the Italian got the crucial service break in the seventh game. Despite that setback, he created situations where he had the potential to break back, but it was not to be, and he could not force his way into levelling up matters. Kuhn's victory over King was only his second ATP tour level match, having played his first ATP main match last year in Shenzhen, but lost in round one to the US player Donald Young. He is the youngest Spaniard since Rafael Nadal in 2004 (then 17) to win a main round match at an ATP tournament. “It’s a dream to share the locker room with all the great players. The wildcard meant a lot to me,” Kuhn said.

Alonso Praise

Two-time world F1 champion, Spain's Fernando Alonso, praised his McLaren team for finishing among the points in Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix after switching to Renault engines during the off-season. Alonso fought off Red Bull’s young Dutchman Max Verstappen to grab fifth place in the season-opening race, in a sign of improved fortunes for the one-time F1 powerhouse. Alonso, 36, looked certain to leave McLaren last year following a disappointing season but decided to extend his deal after the team terminated their relationship with Honda. “The last couple of years have been difficult, and I think the winter has been difficult as well,” the Spaniard said. “We switched to the Renault engine quite late and the team had to react very quickly to redesign some of the parts at the rear end, and now we’ve come here and both cars have scored points –- one in the top five.” Alonso said while it was only McLaren’s first race with Renault, there was growing optimism inside the British team. “With some updates to come in the next few races we can start to look ahead a little bit and Red Bull will be the next target,” he said.

AUSSIE CHEATS

TITLES ON THE LINE

Steve Smith (pictured) and David Warner have been banned from playing for Australia for a year over the South Africa ball-tampering scandal. The captain and vice-captain have been hit with the severe punishment by Cricket Australia for their roles, whilst Cameron Bancroft, who carried out the plan to alter the condition of the ball using sticky tape during the third Test, has been suspended from international cricket for nine months.

MOEEN DOUBT

Anthony Joshua believes Joseph Parker will face an "overwhelming" experience in a unification bout which will go down in "history" on Saturday. WBA and IBF world heavyweight champion Joshua meets WBO titleholder Parker at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. It will be Briton Joshua's fourth stadium bout but, with 80,000 fans expected, the fight represents a new level of interest for New Zealand's Parker. "It took me a few times to get used to it," Joshua told the BBC. "It's an experience he hasn't faced yet. It is daunting, it is overwhelming.

"You have a fighter that will block out the noise, which takes a whole heap of energy. Then you have a fighter who rides the wave, which can leave you too excited. "The fight is won or lost in training camp but the last bolt is screwed on during the spell from your changing room to the first bell." Joshua has made subtle tweaks to his training since defeating Carlos Takamin in October. He now focuses on boxing during morning sessions, with running or strength work later in the day. The reverse of his old routine aims to see

him fresher when doing technical work under the guidance of trainer Rob McCracken at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Parker - undefeated in 24 bouts - has undergone changes of his own after having surgery on both elbows late in 2017, a move which his camp claim has led to a 20% improvement in his punching since he out-pointed Hughie Fury in September. "He is dangerous," added Joshua. "He's a king where he is from so he has that pride on his back as well. He has to represent the heritage and that's important.

CLASH AT THE BRIDGE

Moeen Ali's place in the England Test team is under pressure following their heavy loss to New Zealand in Auckland. The all-rounder followed a disappointing Ashes series with a modest showing in the innings and 49-run hammering at Eden Park, which was his 50th Test. England coach Trevor Bayliss says he is considering changes for the second Test starting in Christchurch tomorrow, and did little to give cause for optimism that Moeen will be retained. "I'm sure he's disappointed with the way he's gone," Bayliss said.

The Premier League returns this weekend after the international break, with leaders Manchester City in action this Saturday in a “Battle of the Blues” at Sam Allardyce’s Everton, and second-placed Manchester United facing Swansea City who are battling against relegation. Third in the table Liverpool have the Saturday lunchtime showcase away to Crystal Palace, led by ex-Reds boss, Roy Hodgson. The stand-out clash, though, is at Stamford Bridge on Sunday where Chelsea will know that anything less than a win over Tottenham will leave qualification for next season's Champions League a very tall order. Currently sitting five points off fourth-placed Spurs, the Premier League champions must beat a top-four rival for the first time since November to close the sizeable gap.

Spurs have not won at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era with Gary Lineker, the last player to score a winner in the league for the visitors, a run stretching back to February 1990. Chelsea have recently lost to Manchester United and Manchester City, but are the only team to win at Spurs' temporary home in the league this season, a Marcos Alonso double downing Wembley's temporary inhabitants in August. Chelsea have question marks over the fitness of both Thibaut Courtois (hamstring) and Andreas Christensen (fatigue), but both are expected to be fit for Sunday. Tottenham will be without talisman Harry Kane, meaning that Heung-min Son will lead the line at Chelsea’s home ground Stamford Bridge.
