PUIG’S PLEDGE

BY ALEX TRELINSKI

ritish residents of the Costa Blanca have been reassured by Valencia President, Ximo Puig, that their free healthcare is safe once the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. In the wake of the Brexit referendum vote over a fortnight ago, one of the major concerns of British residents has been what will happen to their access to the Spanish health service but on a visit to Benidorm this week, Puig unequivocably stated that

there would be no change to health provision for the approximately 100 thousand strong British population within the Valencia region after Brexit is enacted. The Valencian leader reiterated his message issued the day after the referendum result of “love, affection and security” as far as the British residents are concerned. “The Valencian Government will not initiate any fundamental disruption of health provision" guaranteed Puig. Since coming to power

over a year ago, the Valencian left-wing PSOE/Compromis coalition have also reversed decisions on SIP card access to foreigners in the area without residence permits, and started returning the cards to around 60 thousand foreign nationals who had them confiscated after the ban was launched in September 2012. This move brought Puig into conflict with Mariano Rajoy’s PP government in Madrid who have taken the matter to Spain’s Constitutional Court. Ximo Puig, who met tourist chiefs in Benidorm on Monday to discuss the effects of Brexit on British tourism on the Costa Blanca, said that he didn’t see any immediate prospect of hotels reducing prices to counteract the falling rate of the pound against the euro. Puig, who is in Torrevieja this weekend holding a meeting of his Valencia cabinet as part of

his plan to bring the whole Valencia region together, said that the area would need to punch harder to get UK visitors but that the Costa Blanca needs to diversify still further in attracting tourists from across Europe and further afield. There’s been no declaration from the Murcia regional government over their views on British residents continuing to access free healthcare after the UK quits the European Union.

FATAL IGNORANCE A

Romanian man aged 47 died in the waters of El Altet beach last Monday morning after ignoring red

flag warnings. The man, who was with his wife, lost conciousness, with medical staff reviving him before he

suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. Last week, a British tourist at Playa La Glea, Campoamor died after ignoring the red flags, whilst lifeguards rescued a couple at Guardamar who flouted the flags. Warnings were raised on Torrevieja beaches last weekend (see inside) whilst a retired lifeguard saved a girl at Playa Flamenca on Sunday as well as a lifeguard who was suffering from exhaustion.

300 people gathered in front of the suspended Arenales de Sol hotel redevelopment on Sunday to call on the project to be immediately restarted, after building work was stopped by authorities because the Princesol chain had allegedly gone beyond the scope of what was allowed. The group, which had been converting the longdeserted structure into a luxury hotel and spa complex at

a cost of up to 11 million euros, have been accused of allowing internal demolition work, which had not been mentioned in their plans. Arenales residents and business people took part in an hour-long demonstration waving banners calling for work on the building to be resumed, saying that the project is very good news for the area and the local economy.

A 41-year-old Torrevieja father of three has been jailed for 12 and a half years by the Provincial Court in Elche after a jury found him guilty last month of stabbing his wife´s brother after a brawl in the Calvario area of Torrevieja in January last year. The court also imposed a compensation sum of 77 thousand euros to be paid to the victim's family.

The killer, Nizzamuddin K, is an Indian national who ran an Indian restaurant in Aguas Nuevas whilst the victim also worked in the hospitality trade. The two men had fallen out over an 850 euro debt, which caused the street fight and the subsequent fatal multiple stabbing outside the victim’s home on Calle Clemente Gosalvez.

A team of 64 lifeguards belatedly started to patrol Torrevieja’s beaches on Wednesday, after red flags were raised right across the coastline last weekend on the orders of the council who had nobody to patrol the beaches. Despite the start of the peak summer season, Torrevieja council still had not formally agreed a deal with the new lifeguard franchise holder Eulen before last weekend, with papers belatedly signed on Wednesday. Eulen’s bosses said they could not sign any earlier because they did not have the necessary documentation for their employees to present to Torrevieja council. Bathers were left frustrated by the situation which even to led to some of them staging an impromptu protest in the Playa del Cura

area on Sunday, though the council said that they were not taking any chances with high winds forecast, which did hit the area, and the death of a Swedish bather at La Mata as reported in last week’s Courier. Cover should have started on June 15th, with the opposition Partido Popular calling for the resignation of mayor José Manuel Dolón over the matter, with social media also full of criticism over the council not even putting into place a temporary contract. 71 Cruz Roja lifeguards were made redundant by their organisation after losing the contract to Eulen, having patrolled the local beaches for many years Dolón fired back at the PP for taking a cheap political shot which he claimed damaged the reputation of the area, and chose to

blame a lack of council staff over delays in processing the contract. There was no comment from the mayor as to why temporary arrangements had not been put into place for last weekend. Beaches councillor Javier Manzanares said that the new contract will see daily cover provided between 11.00am and 7.00pm through till September with the three-year-deal with Eulen having an extension clause in it Over on the Orihuela Costa, a new contract with Ambumar finally kicked in last Thursday, after the company had provided temporary cover after a fortnight's delay in implementing the deal. This meant that Torrevieja was the only council in the whole of the Southern Costa Blanca not to have any beach protection in place last weekend.

SAMU Switch

French Pain A 24-hour-strike against public service reforms in France saw air traffic controllers join the action on Tuesday evening through to Wednesday night, leading to cancellations and delays on flights to and from Spain that

use French air space. Alicante-Elche and San Javier airports were amongst those worst hit, with Ryanair pulling over 100 flights that were scheduled to travel over France on those days.

The annual transfer of a SAMU ambulance from Elche to Santa Pola for the high tourist season took place on Wednesday, with the Elche city area having just one vehicle until

September 12th to cover 230 thousand residents. The coastal ambulance will serve La Marina and Arenales del Sol in addition to Santa Pola, with critics of the move calling for extra

resources during the summer, though nothing has changed despite all political parties on Elche council calling for a better deal at a plenary meeting held back in February.

Tiger Terror A tiger attacked and killed a zookeeper in its cage at Benidorm's Terra Natura park on Saturday. The grim discovery of the keeper's body was made at around 5:00 pm with the local police calling in a Cruz Roja ambulance team to help the female worker, but when the crew arrived, she had already died. "The tiger was still in the cage with the 37-year-old keeper," said a Cruz Roja spokesman. Zoo staff put the animal to sleep with sedative darts after which the emergency workers were able to get in and pronounce the woman dead. Visitors were in the zoo at the time of the incident, but it is understood that none witnessed the attack. The 37-year-old woman was said to be a very expe-

The Terra Natura manager Alberto Gaforio, said that the zookeeper was

somebody who was professional in what she did, and that everybody worked to strict rules. Meanwhile a on-line petition has been launched to stop the offending tiger being put to sleep. Gaforio said that since Saturday’s incident, the animal had been sedated and kept on its own in a separate enclosure ahead of any court instructions over its fate.

Blaze Away

A firework at a surprise display for a newly married couple at their wedding reception caused a blaze last Saturday night next to Redován's Thámesis nightclub. Two fire crews were scambled to the scene, and despite the spectacular flames, nobody was injured as the fire was stopped spreading to a nearby petrol station as well as to buildings and an electrical substation. The blaze did

though cinder around 500 square metres of scrubland. The fireworks were being let off in a field next to the club, after assurances that the land owner had cleared it of rubbish, with Redován council planning to bill him for the cost of Saturday’s operation after claims that no clearance work had been done on the site. The Guardia Civil from Callosa are carrying out an investigation.

Carriages Await San Pedro del Pinatar’s 220th annual Royal Cattle show was held last weekend with dozens of farmers from across the area and further afield taking part in an event that dates back to the 18th century. There were more exhibitors taking part this year than 12 months earlier, and Sunday saw the traditional horse and carriage parade from the market site down to Playa Villananitos.

The Last Hug

Pilar Snub A Romanian “hugging” gang suspected of at least six robberies has been arrested by the National Police in Elche. The two men and two women, aged in their twenties, are accused of four crimes in the area, as well as striking in the central city of Valladolid. The gang were based in the Madrid area town of Parla and early investigations suggest that they may have struck in other parts of Spain. Early this year a Romanian “hugging gang” was arrested in Santa Pola, and there were numerous incidents

across the Vega Baja and Orihuela Costa involving people who were described by their victims as being East European. The women in the Elche arrests would use the wellworn routine of asking directions of elderly people to a medical centre, and then would kiss and hug their victim whilst snatching items of jewellery, as well not hesitating to resort to violence if they did not get anything. The two men would be waiting nearby in a car for a quick getaway. The gang were rumbled by

an off duty agent who spotted the female duo doing a “hug” on a man in the San Anton area of Elche. The officer approached the car where the men were poised for their escape and sped off with the women, as police reinforcements were drafted in, and a high speed chase took place through the streets of Elche before the gang were apprehended. One of the detainees was found to have an arrest warrant pending from Valladolid police for a hugging crime, with a variety of stolen items recovered from the getaway vehicle.

Pilar de la Horadada’s request for a fire engine to be based in their area over the summer has been rejected by the Alicante Provincial council. The area is served by tenders operating out of Torrevieja with Pilar’s safety

councillor, José Tomás Saura, saying the journey time involved could cost lives. He said the area has some of the largest woodland areas in the Vega Baja and that the population rises to 70 thousand during the summer.

Words Of Hate The Guardia Civil have arrested three men in the north-eastern city of Lleida, on charges of "glorifying terrorism and the distribution of propaganda for several terrorist groups over the internet". The three men are of Pakistani origin, aged 25, 29 and 31, and shared a flat in the city where they were arrested.

Among the material they spread over the internet was propaganda for Daesh, the Taliban and other Pakistani organizations. Investigators highlighted that the trio had been able to involve an evergrowing circle of acquaintances in their activities and the justification of acts of violence, helping spread jihadist propaganda through Spain.

Moving Numbers

The number of Spanish nationals moving abroad rose last year to its highest level since comparable figures were first compiled in 2008, by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Many travelled to Britain, where they now face an uncertain future following last week's decision by British voters to leave the European Union, but locally after years of falls, population figures rose in Alicante Province and the Murcia region. Spain's population fell by 11,142 in 2015 to 46.438 million, a drop of 0.02 percent. It was the fourth consecutive annual drop, and the decrease is part of a trend that has continued since the financial crisis pitched the country into a five-year slump. The downturn did not bottom out until mid-2013. By then, construction activity had crumbled and unemployment was soaring, sparking an exodus of thousands from

the Iberian Peninsula. In the four years ending January 1st, 2016, the population shrank by about 380,000. Last year, the net outflow of Spanish citizens was almost 47,000. Some 52,000 returned in 2015. Some of the Spanish nationals leaving the country were born in Latin America and elsewhere before acquiring passports. The net outflow of Spanish nationals in 2015 was largely offset by the first net influx of foreign nationals since 2010. The net foreign inflow was 38,317 last year, according to the figures. The number of Spanish citizens rose slightly last year, boosted by foreign inhabitants acquiring citizenship. A total of 114,207 foreign residents became citizens of Spain last year. More than one in five of them were from Morocco, with Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and the Dominican Republic accounting for

most of the rest. The biggest net outflow of foreign residents in Spain came from Romanian, Bulgarian and British citizens. The biggest net influx was from Italy, Venezuela, Ukraine and Honduras. The situation in Alicante Province is somewhat different with the region's population rising by three thousand and a half thousand last year to 1.84 million, the first recorded rise since January 2013, 21 and a half thousand people went abroad from the area last year, compared to 31 and a half thousand in 2014. Just over 22 thousand people from out of Spain moved to Alicante Province last year. The Murcia region was recorded by the INE as having 1.46 million inhabitants last year, a rise of nearly fifteen hundred compared to the 2014 returns. 25 thousand residents left the area, of which nearly 12 thousand moved abroad.

Google Searched

Spanish tax inspectors raided Google’s offices in Madrid last week as part of an ongoing investigation into possible tax evasion. The authorities began probing the internet giant’s affairs five years ago when its Spanish affiliate was paying

virtually no tax. Spanish authorities suspect that Google could be evading tax by channelling some income through Ireland with Google insisting that they are fully cooperating with the ongoing inquiry.

Zika Strikes

The first-ever case in Spain of the Zika virus being sexually-transmitted has been recorded, affecting a Madrid woman whose male partner had been in Latin America for two months this spring, according to the region's health authorities. Of the 158 cases registered to date in Spain, 21 have affected pregnant women – of whom just two so far have been found to have been carrying a foetus with brain deformities – and all bar one have been 'imported' from Latin America. Every sufferer so far has been in Central or South America prior to being

diagnosed, except the woman from Madrid whose partner was in one of the high-risk countries in April and May and who has caught it from him via sexual intercourse. But the couple, both infected, are said to be recovering well and neither has needed to go to hospital for treatment. The Zika virus is not contagious, but can apparently be caught sexually; otherwise, it is only ever caught by being bitten by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, a tropical breed which is not found in Europe. It is not airborne and ordinary personto-person contact does not pass it on.

Sipping Away The number of unemployed people registered with Spain’s Employment Office fell by 124,349 in June from May to 3.767.054, making it the lowest figure since September 2009. The fall in relative terms was 3.2% and is the second largest reduction in recent years, only beaten by a drop recorded in June 2013. Compared to June 2015, the number of unemployed went down by 94,727, and so far 2016 has seen the number of jobless people fall by 48,579. In Alicante Province there were nearly six thousand people out of work in June, compared to May (a 3.4% fall), whilst two thousand people left the Murcia region dole queues (a fall of under 2%).

11 different sources of drinking water were sampled last week in Playa Flamenca in an exercise for the palate organised by the Hidraqua water company and the Interlab laboratory. Blind testing was carried out by Hidraqua's local manager Juan José Alonso along with Orihuela coastal councillor Sofía Álvarez, as they

worked their way through mineral, recycled, desalinated, and well samples. The event was to promote the variety of ways that drinking water can be obtained or produced, with experts making the unsurprising conclusion that people prefer drinking the type of water that they are used to be it from the tap or bottled.

Consensual Claim A Blackpool man, 48-yearold Thomas McGurk, has pleaded not guilty to rapeing a Finnish woman in Benidorm in 1999. McGurk told the Alicante court this week that that they had consensual sex whilst the woman, appearing a videolink, told the hearing that she was raped. McGurk was extradited from the UK earlier this year, with prosecutors calling for nine years behind bars if he is found guilty of rape and assault charges.

Spitting Mad

A mother-of-three has been banned from flying with Ryanair after she failed to stop her two-year-old son 'spitting' at other passengers as the family travelled back from Barcelona. The unnamed woman, her husband, and their three children were escorted away by police waiting at Liverpool John Lennon Airport last week after trouble flared in Barcelona and then continued on the flight

back to the UK. Complaints were made by passengers about a young boy spitting at them during the boarding process at Barcelona airport. The disruptive behaviour carried on inside the Ryanair plane as the flight prepared to take off, police said. The mother refused to control her child and became abusive to the cabin crew. Passengers said the woman, in her late twenties,

was threatening towards them as they urged her to keep her child in check. The flight crew made contact with authorities with the Merseyside police taking the family off the plane at John Lennon airport and warning the mother about her behaviour though she was not charged. Ryanair though had the last laugh as they banned the woman from ever travelling with them again.

Weeding Out 38 out of work farm labourers have been hired by Almoradi council to help clear up the area's urban and rural roadside thanks to a 132 thousand euro grant from the State Employment Service. Work has started already with unemployed workers from the agricultural industry being used on temporary contracts with other areas also taking part in the scheme including Orihuela. The Almoradi announcement came just a day after the opposition Ciudadanos party councillor Almudena Albentosa, criticising the state of the streets saying that the weeds and dead plants

gave the wrong impression of the area to any visitors. A similar scheme has also started in the neighbouring town of Rafal, whilst 108 workers are to be deployed by Orihuela council also on a State Employment Service grant worth nearly 400 thousand

euros. Orihuela council spokesman, Víctor Valverde, said that 54 of the labourers would be assigned exclusively to the Orihuela Costa, claiming the council was “showing its commitment to the residents and visitors to the coast”.

Madrigal Magic One of the world's biggest award winning choirs will open up the 62nd International Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja on Monday July 18th. Keyboard Concerns Cyber crime is on the rise in Spain with an eight percent increase in internet-related offences over the first five months of 2016 compared to the same period last year. Spain’s security minister, Francisco Martínez, said the rising trend was no surprise, with the full figures for 2015 showing a 21 percent hike on those of 2014. Fraud was the main computer crime according to Martínez, but the government was also worried about the increasing use of the internet for terrorist propaganda.

and in 2007). To date, only four choirs in the world have matched that achievement. 15 choirs from around the world will take part in the competition which will once again be staged at the Eras de la Sal on the seafront in Torrevieja, with the Valencian President, Ximo Puig, confirming that he will be attending some of the event including the popular Habaneras on

the Beach night at Playa del Cura.

Nothing Strange The death of a British man in Barcelona is not being treated as suspicious, the police have confirmed. Sam Alger, 25, originally from Norfolk, died after a night out in the Catalan capital last month. He had last been seen outside the Elrow club on June 19th. His body was found on nearby farmland two days later.

Safety First

A team of 250 people will be keeping everybody safe on the Mar Menor beaches this summer, as the annual Murcia region Plan Copla kicked in last Friday for the peak holiday season. Murcia region emergencies director Manuel Durán launched this year's Plan Copla at San

Pedro del Pinatar's Lo Pagán beach alongside San Pedro mayor, Visitación Martínez. Durán talked about the local municipalities co-operating together with 121 manned viewing areas and a network of boats and jet skis for water rescues, of which there were 491 last year.

Behind Closed Doors An Orihuela area brothel was raided by the National Police last Friday in a search for drugs as well as money to do with the services provided. The two and a half operation was at a three bedroom villa in Molins just outside Orihuela City. The address had been advertised on the internet for the last decade "offering" male prostitutes and transvestites around the clock and promising cheap rates, private parking, and discretion. No details were made available as whether anybody had been arrested.

Tourist Magnet

25.2 million foreign tourists visited Spain in the first five months of this year, an 11.4% increase on last year's figures, according to the latest statistics published by Frontur, the Spanish tourism institute. The majority of stays were between four and seven nights, with "holidays" being the main reason for visiting the country, with the Costa Blanca area piling on some big rises in foreign visitors. The UK was once again the main source of foreign tourists to Spain, with a total of 5.8 million Brits visiting the country so far this year, 16.1% more than last year. 3.7 million visitors have come from Germany

(a 5.6% increase) and 3.7 million from France (a 7.6% rise). Between January and May the regions with the highest numbers of tourists were Catalunya (with 5.8 million, a 4.1% rise), the Canaries (with 5.4 million, an 11% rise) and Andalucia (with 3.7 million, an 18.1% increase). In the month of May alone, Spain welcomed 7.1 million foreign tourists, 7.4% more than over the same period in 2015, with the largest group (more than one in four) coming from the UK. In the first five months of 2016, the number of tourists coming into Spain from the country's principal

markets went up, being especially notable the increases in visitors from Ireland (23.7%) and the Netherlands (19.1%). The main tourist destinations in Spain also saw significant increases in visitor numbers, in particular the Valencia region, including the Costa Blanca with a 20.5% rise in visitor numbers. Airports were the main point of access for foreign tourists between January and May, accounting for 20.7 million tourists, a 12.3% rise on last year. The majority of foreign tourists (20.3 million) gave "holiday" or "leisure" as their principal reason for travelling to Spain.

Town Hall Swoops

The Guardia Civil have arrested at least 12 people in a major anti-corruption operation investigating 50 councils including many in the Catalan Region and the Community of Madrid. The operation, known as "Operacion Terymca", has seen searches carried out in 23 town halls, among them Tortosa, Ametlla de Mar, Vandellos and Asco, in the

Catalan province of Tarragona. Meanwhile the town halls of Torrejon de Ardoz, Getafe, Chinchon and Miraflores de la Sierra have all been searched in the Community of Madrid, as well as private houses and company offices as the Guardia looked for evidence of misuse of public funds, money laundering and crimi-

nal organization linked to the fixing of public contracts. Searches have also been carried out in the provinces of Huelva in southwest Spain, Castellon in the Valencia region, Guadalajara and Granada. The Guardia have also made 15 requests for documentation from other town halls, among them Barcelona and Girona.

A Life Of Riley Two men in southern Spain got away with not going to work for 15 years before their bosses even noticed. An investigation revealed that two local government employees never showed up for work, but the gardener and driver still regularly cashed their pay checks. "Two representatives of the General Confederation of Labour union (CGT) could have gone years without coming to work, “Jerez

de la Frontera council said in a statement. "According to a written statement by the men themselves, this situation could date back 15 years," it added. The pair's dismal work ethic first came to light after the authority's human resources department started probing staff labour records, El Pais reports. They initially discovered the duo had not worked a single day from January 2015 to the date of the inquiry in

May 2016. Further investigations revealed they'd been skipping work since at least 2001. A representative for the men's union, the CGT union, claimed the employees had done nothing wrong. He cited a "tacit agreement" with previous councillors that allowed union members to take off "accumulated days" and to share the vacation days of colleagues.

Bognor’s Changing Face There's much talk in Britain about how much the country is divided - highlighted by the referendum vote. This week I’m looking at just one example and it demonstrates why so many in England voted for Brexit. It is an example from close to where we live during the summer when we return from Spain. I'm highlighting Bognor Regis on the south coast - somewhere millions of people have holidayed over the generations. Seaside resorts were bastions of Georgian and Victorian respectability, often attracting the very rich, nobility, and sometimes, if they were lucky, royalty, which really put them on the map. Bognor came into being thanks to a rich hatter from London who holidayed there in the 18th century. Over the decades which followed it attracted royalty, and people wanting to bathe in the seawater at a time when people believed it had health-giving properties. The resort suf-

fered in the 1960s and 1970s, hit by the decline of the traditional British seaside holiday in favour of package holidays abroad. Bognor changed from being a dull but rather genteel town into one suffering from poverty and related ills. I6 years ago earnings in Bognor were 10 percent lower than in the rest of South East England and the town had one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the country. And its decline has continued into the 21st century. Here's the story of Mark, a local businessman, who used to live with his wife and two young children on the western part of Bognor seafront but was forced out, now living close to us about four miles outside the town. "When we first moved in it was nice. We had views to the sea, it was quiet and peaceful, but not for long. One by one, a block of flats next to us were taken over by eastern Europeans and with-

in a very short time our peace was transformed. There would be groups of them hanging about preferring to drink, make music and socialise to the small hours of the morning, drinking on the beach and making terrible noise. The next day the beaches were strewn with empty beer cans. There would be groups hang ingaround, and I became fearful for the safety of my family," said Mark. People's property, including parked cars, were damaged, and it was clear that there was an ever increasing amount of drug taking. Finally, when two Polish people were taken from their flat in body bags, having been involved with a crystal meth factory, it was the last straw the family knew they had to move out. On our return from Spain, we walked around Bognor and were in despair. It looked totally run-down, grass borders along the sides of many

roads were two foot high in uncut grass, many gardens were neglected and in the Arcade, which runs from the main shopping street to the seafront, there were more empty shops than open ones. Walking down the main street it's hard to hear English being spoken. All this is replicated in many other towns in England, seaside resorts and northern towns alike, and it explains why so many people living in them voted for Brexit, and sixty percent for it in the Bognor area. Said Mark: "I am a relatively young person, but I voted for Brexit - a few years ago I would never have dreamed of doing so. Bognor is just one example of what unrestricted immigration has done for so many nice towns in Britain. Now I couldn't recommend anyone to holiday here." So many times during the referendum debate I heard politicians say how good immigration has been for the

UK. I am sure that is true in much of London, which has attracted well-educated professionals - the sort of people MPs are likely to meet. There are hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have done well, started flourishing businesses, employing others and contributing to the national economy. But MPs who have lost the support of the voters like never before should spend more time outside Westminster, take long walks around their own constituencies and see what a combination of mass immigration and a lack of investment through austerity has done to so much of Britain. These MPs, most never having real jobs, created out of the Oxbridge and Eton "factories" of politician-making robots, never having lived in the areas they represent, have spent far too many years sticking their heads deep into Westminster sand and seeing only what they want to see.

Disrespectful Act It was horrific what British and French soldiers went through at the Somme a hundred years ago, when they were ordered over the top and into constant machine alexgun fire from waiting Germans. So it made me furious to hear that special commemorative lapel pins made from Battle of the Somme shells and created by the Royal British Legion are being traded at more than 10 times the original asking price. The pins were created by the Legion in honour of the 19,240 men killed in the battle 100 years ago. The Legion has sold out of the ÂŁ39.99 lapel pins, but people were quick to profit, selling them via online auction sites. It's sickening how low some folk will go to make money.

Prop Tangle A young man was seriously injured in a water-ski accident at Santa Pola's Playa Lisa last Saturday lunchtime. Witnesses say that some of his swimwear had got entangled in the motorboat's propeller and he suffered serious damage to a leg and his abdomen. People on a nearby boat saw the drama unfold and managed to get him onto their vessel, along with the other occupants who were stranded because of the tangled costume. The rescuers then sped to the shore with Cruz Roja staff providing first aid before an ambulance rushed the injured man to Elche General Hospital. The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation.

Slow Justice

Torrevieja’s court cases take twice as long as the national average, according to Valencia’s justice minister, Gabriela Bravo. On a visit to the city last week, Bravo said that new courts are urgently needed with representations made to the Madrid central government.

31-Year Stretch

A Moroccan man who murdered former British Olympic diver David Tarsey and his wife Jean at their Costa Blanca home last year will see out the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to 31 years in prison. Driss Drizi, 63, was jailed after striking a deal with prosecutors by confessing to his crimes during a pre-trial court hearing. Drizi was facing a 42-year prison sentence if he was convicted of killing the couple at a trial. Judge Jose Daniel Mira Perceval ended up jailing him for 15 years for each murder plus another year for illegal possession of a

firearm after his plea bargain deal. The British couple, both 77, were found in each other's arms on their sofa in March last year at their home in Jalon, Alicante Province. Both were killed by a single bullet to the head. Mother-of-two Mrs Tarsey was shot first before her husband, a former engineer who competed in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics as well as the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games, was murdered. Drizi was arrested last September after an exhaustive police investigation. Reports at the time said the immigrant,

an acquaintance of David's, had confessed during questioning to killing the couple, originally from west London, after a row. Drizi, who was due to be tried by a jury later this month, struck his deal during a pre-trial hearing at an Alicante court. He had been expected to plead guilty to manslaughter but not murder at the trial if it had gone ahead. As well as being sentenced to more than three decades in prison, Drizi has also been ordered to pay 150 thousand euros each in compensation to the Tarseys' grown-up sons Alexei and Sascha.

The Web Doctor Search

Six in 10 people in Spain admit they go onto internet search engines like Google for medical advice, with the Patients' Ombudsman concerned about the dangers of trying to replace a professional with a website. Over half – 54.2% - of Spanish residents say they research healthy lifestyle hacks online, whilst another 52.1% looks up illnesses, 50.9% check their symptoms through Google, and 47% look for remedies.

Triple Tragedy

Two people were killed by a crazed knifeman in Barcelona on Tuesday, who then committed suicide. The 48year-old maniac repeatedly stabbed a caretaker at a block in Barcelona's Zona Alta, leaving him for dead. He then went into a bank a few doors away going straight for the manager and knifing her to death. Police have found out that the woman knew her killer,

but it is not yet known whether this was through her work, or if they were just neighbours. He is thought to have previously worked with the caretaker, a 48-year-old Philippine, at the same block. After the double slaying, the man jumped off a bridge onto a road below and was run over by a bus, killing him outright. Mystery surrounds what exactly the motives were for the murders.

Guilty Messi Barcelona football star Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after being found guilty of three counts of tax fraud. His father, Jorge, also got the same sentence for the same charges, but under Spanish law a prison sentence under two years can be served under probation, meaning that Messi and his father will

escape jail. The court also fined Messi 2 million euros and his father 1.5 million euros, with the footballer claiming he knew nothing about a tax evasion scheme when he signed contracts related to image rights. The duo were accused of defrauding the tax office of 4.2 million euros between 2007 and 2009.

All Go For Torre

Improvement work to the road linking Pilar de la Horadada to Torre de la Horadada was officially inspected by Pilar mayor, Ignacio Ramos last week at the end of the 250 thousand euro project. A roundabout has been built on the road that links the N-332 to the Lo Monte urbanisation at the

junction of Avenida Escultor Sánchez Lozano and Avenida Pais Valenciano, replacing a set of traffic lights. The area's cycle path has also been extended to the N332 which means that cyclists can now travel all the way directly between Torre and Torrevieja.

Scam Busted

More than 100 people paid tribute on Sunday to the victims of a fatal subway crash in Valencia City that killed 43 and injured 47 a decade ago. Some mourners laid flowers outside the Jesus station where the crash occurred on July 3, 2006. The tenth anniversary ceremony was an emotional one for the families, which had long battled to reverse a decision by the Partido Popular that gov-

erned Valencia at the time to change the name of the station. It has now been changed back to its original name. Contrary to the PP politicians saying that human error and excessive speed was to blame, victims' associations argued that the derailment was caused by poor railway maintenance. An investigative commission's recent verdict supported the victims' version.

Dealer Returned A convicted drug dealer on the run for more than a year has been arrested in Spain and appeared in court in Northern Ireland on Wednesday. Mark Dunford (41), originally from Waterford but with an address at Coleraine,

Co Derry, was detained on a European Arrest Warrant at an unspecified Spanish location. Dunford had admitted supplying amphetamines, but failed to appear in court for his sentencing in February last year.

Two men have been arrested by the National Police on allegations of swindling a German car dealership out of 37 highend vehicles worth two million euros. The con ran between 2010 and 2014 with the duo setting up a company to import the cars into Spain, some of which were sold in Alicante Province. The German dealership was “hooked in” by the men settling early lower value invoices and the duo establishing an element of trust with their supplier, who was then left unpaid after believing the men were good for the money. The unidentified duo were arrested when arriving back in the country at Madrid airport on a flight from Qatar with investigators believing that the money from their crooked operation has been stashed outside Spain.

Alzheimer’s Boost

Maria’s Big Thanks

The annual Maria and the Pink Ladies “Walk For Life” staged last month around Playa Flamenca raised a grand total of just under 15 thousand euros for the AECC cancer charity. The largest fund-raising effort came from Cabo Roig’s Queen Victoria bar where ten of their customers raised thirteen hundred euros to take part in the walk in memory of

cancer-sufferer Colin Bowden. Bar owners Sue and Karl Court along with some of their staff and regulars handed over a cheque to Maria Wilson, who expressed her gratitude for the sum raised and thanked everybody who took part in the “Walk For Life”, as well as to Euro Golf for their thirteen hundred euro donation.

Followers Of Fashion

Volunteers from the Paul Cunningham Nurses charity donned a range of clothes for their annual fashion show held recently at The Club in Quesada.

Entertainment came from Richie C and the clothes which came from the Paul Cunningham shop in Quesada were available to buy after the event.

Children’s Delight

Volunteers Wanted Local musical theatre group Studio 32 presented a cheque of just over two thousand euros to the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s society as part of the bumper three and a half thousand euros raised by their recent production of Fiddler on the Roof. Studio 32 chairman, Philip Wilson, handed over the cheque to society president, Benjamin Villena Rodriguez at

San Fulgencio Town Hall, with Benjamin thanking Studio 32 for their continuing support of his charity. Studio 32’s winter show will be the Broadway musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “A Christmas Carol”, and if you want to get involved as a Studio 32 member, then go to their website page at, www.studiothirtytwo.org.

The charity is also looking for volunteers to join their Residential Home Visiting Team where Age Concern workers visit English speaking people in a Residential Home for a couple of hours each week on a monthly rota basis. If you can spare a couple of hours a month, please call the number above.

A barbeque fund-raiser netted 658 euros to provide summer clothes for the 18 youngsters at the Elche Children’s Home, who also feasted on the food and entertainment provided in the annual charity BBQ at Guardamar’s Restaurante El Alto La Dolores. The top prize in the raffle,

namely the ever popular Mediterranean cruise donated by restaurant owners Andres and Berna was won by Mrs. Davis from Pueblo Bravo, and plans are now set for the next charity night on Wednesday July 20th in aid of Torrevieja Stroke Support, with entertainment provided by Woody and the Peckers.

Making Friends

Four in 10 Spaniards claim to take some of their annual leave from work to spend time with a brandnew pet and help them settle in, and as many as 80% have asked their bosses for more flexible hours so they can have quality time with their animals – many of whom were given the go-ahead to do so, a survey has found. A quarter of pet-owners said they would even change their job to ensure they could work their office hours around their dogs, cats and other domestic animals. Some say their bosses allow them to legitimately 'call in sick for their pets' so they can look after their cats and dogs when they are unwell. These bosses then record their employees'

absence as a temporary sickness – that of the human rather than the animal - giving them permission to care for their pets. Six in 10 say they find it difficult to plan ahead in their social lives because of having pets, or have at least had to cancel engagements because of an animalrelated emergency such as a pet becoming unwell, or the sudden and unplanned adoption of a new one. And 40% say they think of their pets more often than they think of their partners – and actually love them more than their other halves. Two in five Spaniards say their pets are their 'children'. The results of the survey were shown on Zoom-In TV, but the source for the figures was not declared.

Most dog owners observe their pet licking or even gnawing at their paws and wonder if there is any serious concern about this. In many cases, dogs will gently but insistently lick one or both paws, but other canines will go so far as to chew on their toes, which can be disconcerting for any pet owner and can be worrying. What To Do You should always consult with your vet about this behaviour, especially if it comes on suddenly, persists for long periods of time, or is accompanied by redness, swelling, odour, bleeding, limping or other possible signs of pain and infection. Although most dogs engage in this behaviour occasionally for unknown reasons, others are prone to lick or chew their feet excessively. In these

cases, the feet (especially of light-coloured dogs) will often look stained a pink or rusty colour, which is the result of chronic contact with porphyrin pigments found in saliva. What Breeds Suffer? Certain breeds seem to suffer from paw problems a bit more than others. Among those breeds are Labrador retrievers, terriers of all kinds, poodles, Chihuahuas and Maltese. White and blond-haired breeds may not be more prone to paw licking but when they do have the problem, their saliva discolours their paw fur and makes it more apparent. Highly alert working breeds are more likely to relieve stress through overgrooming and paw licking – breeds like greyhounds and also Dalmatians.

Possible Sudden Chewing

Causes of Licking And

There are a variety of reasons why your dog would suddenly lick or chew his feet, including puncture wounds to the toes or paw pads, fractured claws or toes, burns, corns (especially common in Greyhounds), and foreign bodies that may be lodged between the toes, such as ticks, grass awns and burrs. Dogs will also engage in this behaviour due to other, more serious causes, such as interdigital cysts, tumors and other cancers, allergic skin disease and autoimmune diseases of the nail beds or paw pads. Serious Licking And Chewing Allergic skin disease is the most common reason why dogs lick and chew their feet on a chronic basis. Food allergies, in particular, are

typically the culprit, and secondary infections from yeast and bacteria can further exacerbate the behaviour. Many dogs who lick and chew their feet over long periods of time will also do so because it apparently feels good to them. In these cases, vets look for an underlying non-behavioural disease that may have initially triggered the obsessive behaviour. For example, dogs with lick granulomas — wounds caused by obsessive licking of the tops of the feet and lower limbs — may have been initially drawn to lick the area because of an injury, simple itch or a reaction to an allergen. Regardless of the cause, if you notice that your dog is licking or chewing his paws, seek the advice of your vet, especially since most of these cases are easily treatable if dealt with professionally early on.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Despite my usual dose of cynicsm, ITV’s new Monday night drama series, Brief Encounters wasn’t a total write-off, despite it being played out in high summer to low audiences. Essentially it’s a tale of women back in 1982 setting up Ann Summers parties around the Sheffield area and it was certainly fun enjoying the early eighties nostalgia trip with the music and also the appearance of the shops like the splendidly named Yorkshire Rentals, crammed full of televisions! The cast was a non-stop parade of familiar faces led by the likes of Penelope Wilton and Angela Griffin, but I just don’t see how there’s enough

Encounter Of The OK Kind

steam in this to keep going for six weeks. It reminded me of a low grade version of the old Sunday night ITV show Where the Heart Is and you knew there was a comedy struggle when we had the old routine of “working class” girl arriving at “posh” house for the Ann Summers party and thinking the Potpourri is part of the nibbles. Never seen that one before! Brief Encounters is fine as a summer filler and nostalgia trip but we are used to better stuff these days. In fact the best thing about the hour were the trailers for ITV’s forthcoming autumn drama attractions including the return of Cold Feet, and ex-Doctor Who

companion, Jenna Coleman starring in Victoria(as in Queen Vic!). Two fascinating moves by the new ITV regime to mention. Corrie is to move to six episodes a week as from autumn 2017, with ITV boss Kevin Lygo once again emphasising that the show is to focus on comedy, and quite right too. The daft plots from ex-producer Stuart Blackburn are just not part of the Weatherfield fabric but storylining does take place over 12 months, so it will take some time for the rubbish to be weeded out. Secondly, Lygo has put ITV seriously back in the frame for buying big US shows to run at peak-

time. The network has freezed out rivals like SKY to get the most-talked about new show for the autumn, namely a small screen version of the Lethal Weapon movies, produced by Fox TV. The pilot went down a storm at the annual “LA Screenings” where world broadcasters bid for the new American shows. One word of caution, a great pilot doesn’t make for a great series, and a TV version of Jackie Chan’s Rush Hour bombed last autumn in the States, with E4 left with a dozen episodes of a dud to screen. By the way Fox TV are also doing a TV adaptation of The Exorcist which would run perfectly for ITV straight after Jeremy Kyle! It’s a long time since a TV show had so much fuss about it, and the news that Chris Evans has stepped down as host of the BBC’s Top Gear did come as a surprise, especially as the Beeb had spent the last few weeks telling everybody that the programme was growing and they loved it and Evans. Stories and accusations have been popping up about Evans recently and I suggest he was allowed to go rather than the BBC pushing him to make

Monday’s announcement. He’s not easy to manage but I remain a big fan, and I hope that his decision will hasten the return of another series of TFI Friday to Channel Four. As for Top Gear, there are plenty of people there and I think Matt LeBlanc(who the tabloids claim told bosses that either Evans went or he quit) will do well in stepping up to the plate even more. Love them or hate them, Clarkson, Hammond, and May were irreplaceable for what they did, and the BBC needs to get to grips with that and just turn out the best possible show. We never really got to see or enjoy enough of the talented Caroline Aherne, who died last weekend, as the wretched year for showbiz farewells continued. Though a

great performer and writer as Mrs.Merton, her writing was exceptional, like in her collaboration with Craig Cash to create The Royle Family. When it started in the late nineties, it was totally different to anything we had seen before, and was on the money for a witty observational script. Thanks for everything Caroline. I wish my school science teachers had been like Professor Brian Cox, full of enthusiasm and passion. There was plenty of that in his new BBC 1 Monday night series, Forces of Nature, with even a bit of Spain thrown into the first edition. The photography was stunning and my new television lapped up the fantastic HD quality like Christmas had arrived early!

ITV locks up Lethal Weapon acquisition

The highly sought-after US series Lethal Weapon is heading to ITV, marking the return of acquired content to the primetime schedule of the UK's most watched commercial channel. Acquired from Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, the new series is based on the hit movie franchise and tells the story of the classic cop duo Riggs (played by Clayne Crawford - Rectify) and Murtaugh (played by Emmy® nominee Damon Wayans - My Wife and Kids, In Living Color) as they work a crime-ridden beat in modern-day Los Angeles. Kevin Lygo, ITV’s Director of Television, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be bringing Lethal Weapon to our main channel. It’s rare that we find an acquisition with that sweet spot potential - the best pro-

duction values and hugely entertaining drama, that we think can appeal to the biggest and broadest audiences and take up a place in ITV primetime. We saw Lethal Weapon and were immediately excited by what it could add to the ITV schedule, and we’re really looking forward to bringing the series to UK viewers.” Lethal Weapon will premiere in the US this Autumn. The deal was brokered by Sasha Breslau, ITV Head of Acquired Series and Jonathan Vandermeer, Controller of Acquisitions, Rights and Regulatory. Sasha Breslau said, “Lethal Weapon was a standout drama from this year's Screenings, superbly rebooting a beloved franchise with the perfect mix of action, heart, humour and terrific chemistry between

Wayans and Crawford as the iconic cop duo. I'm thrilled and excited to see the show take its place alongside ITV's popular homegrown dramas.” Family man and by-thebook LAPD Detective Roger Murtaugh (Wayans) is back to work after a near fatal heart attack – and his doctor has told him he needs to keep his stress levels under control. That might not be so easy given that he’s been paired with ex-Navy SEAL-turned-detective Martin Riggs (Crawford), who has moved to California for a new start at the LAPD. During their first case, hot-headed Riggs drags conventional cop Murtaugh on a freeway chase and into a shootout with drug dealers; despite his protests, the older cop feels more alive than he has in years. Meanwhile, Riggs gets a glimpse of why Murtaugh is so determined to get home safely at the end of each day – he has a family and a newborn baby. And Murtaugh finds out what happened to Riggs’ marriage, that he sadly lost his young wife and unborn child, and his devil-maycare-attitude hides his grief. By the time their investigation ends, Riggs realises

he may have found something worth living for – a partner and friend in Murtaugh. Even Murtaugh figures this arrangement might just work out after all. If only Riggs doesn’t get them killed first….In addition to Wayans and Crawford, Lethal Weapon stars Kevin Rahm (Mad Men), Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious films), Keesha Sharp (Are We There Yet?), Dante Brown (Mr. Robinson), Chandler Kinney (Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street) and Johnathan Fernandez (Upright Citizens Brigade). Matt Miller (Chuck, Las Vegas, Forever), Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes films, The LEGO™ Movie franchise, Forever), Jennifer Gwartz (Veronica Mars, Forever) and McG (Supernatural, Nikita) are executive producers of Lethal Weapon, which is based on the feature film from Warner Bros. Pictures. Miller wrote the pilot episode, which was directed by McG. The series is from Lin Pictures and Good Session Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, and is distributed around the world by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.

BBC statement on Top Gear

Date: 04.07.2016 Last updated: 04.07.2016 at 15.21 Category: Corporate; BBC Two Statement from Mark Linsey, Director, BBC Studios on Top Gear: “Chris is stepping down from his duties on Top Gear. He says he gave it his best shot doing everything he could to make the show a success. He firmly believes that the right people remain, on both the production team and presenting team to take the show forward and make it the hit we want it to be. The new series has so far notched up over 30m views in the UK alone and has already been sold to 130 territories worldwide. Chris Evans said: “I have never worked with a more committed and driven team than the team I have worked with over the last twelve months. I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause. I remain a huge fan of the show, always have been, always will be. I will continue to focus on my radio show and the allied events that it encompasses.” BBC Press Office

In Emmerdale Victoria is nervous but agrees to do the ID parade. Holly taps into Victoria’s fear to freak her out about identifying her attacker. Outside the shop, Holly runs into Jai and pretends she is fine, but Jai guesses she has the urge to score drugs again. Holly confesses it was her dealer who attacked Victoria.

TV presenter Esther Rantzen has found life lonely since the death of her husband Desmond Wilcox in 2000, but is worried her formidable reputation can scare men off. She participates in this celebrity version of the show in which singletons meet up with potential partners at a restaurant. Also appearing on this first edition are actor Richard Blackwood (aka EastEnders bad boy Vincent), The Only Way Is Essex reality TV star Jess Wright and 2012 Paralympics table tennis silver medallist Will Bayley.

Jai tries to persuade Holly to tell her mum the truth, but will Holly manage to face up and tell Moira? In Coronation Street, In the flower shop, Todd admits to Tracy that he confessed his true feelings to Billy. Tracy urges him to go for it, but Todd is adamant there’s too much at stake. Billy calls at Number 11 to find Sean excitedly packing for their trip to London. Making out he’s got some last minute parish business, Billy tells Sean they’ll have to catch a later train. Sean does his best to mask his disappointment. Billy calls in the flower

shop determined to talk to Todd about his feelings. Making out he was drunk, Todd insists Billy has got the wrong end of the stick. Billy is crushed and Todd feels terrible.

As Sean and Billy set off for London, Eileen waves them off. But spotting Todd outside the flower shop, Billy can no longer contain his feelings and orders the driver to stop. Sean is perplexed.

Despondent Tracy is grateful when Robert agrees to accompany her to the cemetery. In the second episode, having returned home, Sean rails at Billy and demands to know what’s going on. Billy assures him there’s nobody else, but Sean is disbelieving and throws him out. Clearly upset and angry, Sean calls in the cab office and tells Eileen how Billy has dumped him.

While Billy gathers the last of his things from Number 11, Todd leans in for a kiss. Billy tries to resist but his feelings get the better of him and they kiss passionately. Meanwhile, Robert sympathises with Amy, but points out that Tracy also must be suffering terribly as Deirdre meant the world to her. Amy is conflicted. Tracy sits at Deirdre’s graveside and cries as she talks to her. Suddenly Robert arrives with Amy in tow. Tracy is thrilled and Amy tentatively hugs her mum. In Eastenders, Sharon and Buster find them-

selves caught up in the commotion with Gavin, leaving them all in grave danger. Meanwhile, Phil starts to wonder about Sharon’s whereabouts, but his mind turns elsewhere when he confronts Sam about her drunken behaviour. After Sam storms out, Ben points out that something is going on, giving Phil food for thought.

Couscous salad with orange and broad beans recipe A most delicious salad fortified with beans and sweetly surprising with orange slices

The recipe Put the kettle on to boil. Tip 80g of instant couscous into a heatproof mixing bowl, then pour enough of the boiling water over to cover the couscous by 2cm. Set aside for about 15 minutes, till the couscous has absorbed all the liquid. Cook 200g broad beans (weight after podding) in lightly salted boiling water for 5 or 6 minutes till just tender, then drain. Pop the

beans out of their papery skins by pressing them between thumb and finger. In a dry pan, toast 25g pine kernels till golden, shak-

ing t h e p a n from time to time to help them to brown easily. Remove the peel from 2 juicy oranges

with a knife, taking care to cut away all the bitter white pith under the skin. Cut each orange into about 5 thin slices. Finely chop 10 mint leaves and the leaves from a small bunch of parsley. (You will need a good couple of handfuls of chopped parsley.) Trim and finely slice 6 radishes. Slice 3 spring onions very finely. Run a fork through the couscous to separate the grains then add the chopped mint and parsley, the broad beans and the toasted pine kernels, the radishes and spring onions. Season generously. Serve the broad bean couscous trickled with olive oil, together with the sliced oranges. The trick In this instance, for a quick

midweek meal, I would use instant couscous. You can use boiling water in which to soak the couscous, but I like to use vegetable or chicken stock if I have some. Running a fork through the soaked couscous is essential to separate and lighten

the texture. It is better not to make the salad more than an hour in advance, after which time the texture may suffer. The twist You will need something crisp to contrast the general softness of the couscous.

Cucumber, for instance, or radishes, celery, lightly cooked green beans cut into small dice, grated carrot, toasted nuts – especially flaked almonds. I also like adding toasted seeds such as sunflower, sesame and pumpkin.

Scotch egg company claims to have cracked problem of eggshell waste

Leicester-based egg processing plant Just Egg hard boils and peels 1.5m eggs a week for snacks such as egg mayonnaise and Scotch eggs, creating mountains of shells to dispose of. It’s a dilemma the company’s owner, Pankaj Pancholi, has been keen to crack since he launched the business 14 years ago. At home, eggshells can easily be composted or sprin-

kled on flower beds as a slug deterrent or soil enhancer. But for industrial egg producers, shells have to be disposed of in landfill because the waste egg attached to them rots quickly, causing a smelly by-product. It costs Pancholi around £50,000 a year to dispose of them, a significant sum for a company with a turnover of £4.2m last year. In 2012, Pancholi teamed up

with Prof Andy Abbott and scientists at Leicester University to find a costeffective, sustainable way to recycle the shells. Eggshell is made of calcium carbonate, like chalk, with a hard-wearing, crystalline structure. Since chalk is often used as a filler to reinforce plastic, Abbott hatched a plan to do the same with eggshell powder. Abbott’s department set to work designing a plant to make this eggshell powder. Because Just Egg has to dispose of eggshells swiftly to avoid the rot, the eggshell processing plant was built as an extension to the existing factory, with the eggshells passing through on a conveyor belt to be processed. The eggshells are chopped up with blades and washed and treated with a waterbased solution to remove any remaining egg protein. The egg membrane (the clear film lining the eggshell)

is also retained, as the Leicester scientists are exploring potential uses for it, such as wound dressings. Further blades cut the shell into a fine powder, which is

dried to become the filler. The shell processing plant is now running smoothly, although there have been a few hiccups along the way. The blades, for example,

jammed and had to be replaced. Now they ensure that as much waste egg is removed from the shell as possible before it reaches the blades.

You can use any stone fruits, either on their own or mixed, for this dish. Use slightly less-ripe fruit so it does not pulp. Larger fruits should go into the pan first as they take a little longer to cook. Double the liquid if you want more juices. SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 4 tbsp demerara sugar 1 tbsp rosé wine, optional

1 vanilla pod, split into two 6 cardamom pods 4 small nectarines 4 apricots 4 plums or greengages METHOD Put the sugar in a shallow pan with eight tablespoons of water, the wine if using, the vanilla and the cardamom. Cook slowly, without stirring, over a low heat – the sugar

should melt without crystallising – then simmer for a few minutes. You should have a light syrup. Add the fruits, top down, and cook them in the bubbling syrup for 3-4 minutes. You do not want them to fall apart. Turn the fruits and continue to simmer to cook the other halves. Once tender, allow them to cool.

Hangover cures Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who's ever drunk too much knows the consequences of it. Alcohol is a diuretic (meaning it removes fluids from the body), so drinking too much can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Alcohol can upset your stomach and give you a bad night's sleep. You may still have some alcohol in your system the next morning. Cure myth Hangover cures are generally a myth. There are no cures for a hangover. There are tips for avoiding hangovers and for easing the symptoms if you have one. The best way to avoid a hangover is to limit how much you drink in single session drink more slowly drink with food alternate with water or non-alcoholic drinks To avoid a hangover, don't drink more than you know your body can cope with. If you're not sure how much that is, be careful. To reduce the risk of harming your health if you drink

A large glass of wine, for instance, contains around three units. In one evening, that can quickly add up to a lot more than you intended to drink. Fried chicken and doughnut recipes directly from the deep south

The “Deep South” that we think of today is an area of the US that stretches from New Orleans on the Gulf of Mexico into Arkansas’ Ozark mountain range, across to Charleston on the Atlantic Coast and as far north as Kentucky and southern Virginia, and also includes adopted bits of Florida, but (let’s be clear) has nothing to do with Texas. Yet it is only a couple of hundred years old. So, wide ranging as it is, the food of the south is still in its infancy. The southern writer

David Shields notes that: “to speak of southern food before there is a conscious South risks incoherence.” But in a short span of time, southern food has rooted itself as the definitive cuisine of an entire country. It is the most distinctively “American” of any food I can think of. And, over the past few years, it has become the cuisine du jour. “Slow and low” cooking, “potlikker” (a stock used for braising greens), and “yardbird” (chicken) are becoming recognisable terms associat-

ed with the region and its food, giving us a sort of etymological terroir. We have a recognisable culinary identity, and it includes all of the lovely stereotypes we’ve earned – mostly that we love our food fried in fat. I plan to defend a few of those stereotypes over the next few weeks, but for now I want to concentrate on deep frying, invoking images of crackling pork rinds, cornmeal-crusted catfish, crispy chunks of okra, and, this week, iconic southern fried chicken and glazed doughnuts: the gateway foods that lead into the depths of a serious southern food habit. The southern chef Edna Lewis is one of my heroes. I loved fried chicken for many years, but her recipe changed this dish (and many others) for me. She approaches it from the inside out, first by focusing on preparing a special fat in which to cook the

chicken: fresh lard infused with butter and smoked pork. The level of attention and respect given to the different fats – considering what each imparts to the dish – is an important practice once you’ve tasted the difference it makes. And while restaurants deep-fry for speed and efficiency, at home it only requires a shallow fry on the top of the stove. If fried chicken is the king of the savoury fryer, then the sweet crown must go to the doughnut. One of my fondest doughnut memories includes going to early Revival church services on Wednesdays before school, where Miss Fanny, the church steward (and, yes, a big and beautiful black woman who kept me on the straight and narrow in my youth) had made fresh ring doughnuts glazed with valley cream and chocolate, warmed in the ovens adjacent to the Fellowship Hall.

Modern dieting Of course diets have been around for centuries, promoted just as they are now through books. And for the most part they have always been stupid: the grapefruit diet, the red wine and steak diet, the kitten and stilton diet. I may have invented one of those. But generally they were functional. Do thing A and thing B and you will get result C. They didn’t work because like, pyramid investment schemes, they never do. What the modern diet books have that the previous lot didn’t is a moral dimension. They are not merely instruction manuals. They are secular catechisms. There is an implication in these titles, written by young people with glossy hair and clear eyes who look like they think their farts smell only of peaches and peppermint, that if you don’t follow their plans you will not merely be fat. You will be bad. You will be a flawed person who through, lack of insight and moral fibre, has failed to reach their full potential in the way the authors have. Well I wonder if I might

be permitted to make a learned intervention into this noble discussion of the human soul, by saying this: sod off! Really, go away. Find something else to do. Take up boxing; it may involve hurting people but at least there are rules. In saying this I am only adding my voice to a growing choir. The brilliant Ruby Tandoh recently examined the speciousness of some of the fauxscientific thinking underpinning various of these works. A new blogger called the Angry Chef has been laying waste in superbly forensic style to the flaws in dietary advice and a general failure to understand the science of food and cooking. And Nigella has had a stab at the use of the phrase “Clean Eating”. Food does not have a moral aspect. Only the people eating it do. I am often asked what my guilty food secret is. I reply that I don’t have one. Because if I started feeling guilty, where would I stop? There are some foods that I like but which I know I shouldn’t eat too much of and that’s what I try to do.

Drink: What to serve at a Summer Barbecue

Early July is the traditional time for writing about wines to go with barbecues, even if many of us first lit those coals back in May or June.

The general assumption is that they’re going to be big, beefy reds (and before anyone points out I’ve done much the same in the past,

it’s What Is Expected, and one does one’s best to oblige). But the thought occurs to me that many people enjoy a cold lager with a barbie, so why shouldn’t the wine we drink be refreshing, too? Barbecue is also a good deal more sophisticated than it used to be, and no longer simply a question of bangers and burgers: it might be USstyle barbecue with its subtle, smoky flavours, or fish, or veg; at its most basic, it can just mean cooking over coal rather than under the grill. So why not a light white? That could, of course, be a crowd-pleasing sauvignon, but how about a spritzy vinho verde, which is typically only 11-12% abv? Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde (11% abv) is always a reliable buy: Personally, though, I’m partial to rosé with a barbie.

DIRECTOR Steven Spielberg GENRE Family, PG SYNOPSIS The exciting tale of a young London girl and the mysterious Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. Based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since. RELEASE DATE July 1st 2016 DURATION 90mins Steven Spielberg dips into a deep bag of technological tricks to put humans and giants on the same screen in his adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic.

THE BFG REVIEW

An uncanny thematic mirror to E.T. some 34 years later, Steven Spielberg and Melissa Mathison’s The BFG emerges as a conspicuously less captivating, magical and transporting experience than its classic forebear. Quite literally about the value and importance of dreams to the exclusion of almost anything else, this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s enduring classic (published, coincidentally, the same year E.T. came out) sees the director diving deep into a technological bag of tricks to mix giants and humans on the same cinematic stage. Big commercial results loom for Disney’s major early July release, but the two-hour twohander drags with too much dialogue during the first half

and never truly achieves narrative lift-off. Another addition to the helmer’s substantial shelf of heavily Anglophile works, The BFG, short for The Big Friendly Giant, explicitly enunciates its concerns as much as it dramatizes them; it is the self-cultivated profession of the solitary title character, played by the filmmaker’s new favorite actor, the brilliant stage dynamo Mark Rylance, to collect and store dreams in glowing bottles kept in his elaborate underground cave. The simple plot has the BFG — a several stories-tall middle-aged bloke who is quite thin and has swept-back graying hair, a conspicuously large nose and nearly

Dumbo-like ears — kidnapping little Sophie one night when she spots him in central London; this cannot be tolerated, as if word gets out among ordinary humans that giants exist, it will mean the end of them. The big guy spirits the bespectacled, rational little girl off to his remote cave; fortunately for her, he turns out to be a loner among giants, a gentle, considerate soul prone to some original forms of speech. Far more importantly, he’s not a carnivore or a cannibal, as are his much larger fellow giants who roam the wilds nearby. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic The BFG is at times unwieldy, but still has a lot of heart.

Drinkable Sunscreen Offers A New Form Of Skin Protection Contact@medb.es

Website: www.medb.es

Only 14% of men and 30% percent of women in the US use sunscreen – and about one-third of those don’t use enough. Is digestible sunscreen the answer?

The US skincare market is expected to reach $11bn by 2018, proving that people are more than willing to pay to keep their skin healthy and looking youthful. But expert advice on how to maintain good skin hasn’t changed much over the years. The bottom line remains: wear sunscreen. Apply it liberally and wear a hat for insurance. Maybe just try to stay in the shade if you can. But what if, instead of coating yourself in a cream that blocks the sun, you could protect yourself from the inside

out? That is the purpose of UVO, a drinkable sunblock developed by Bobby Awadalla, a dermatologist. “I would see patients every day [who] had long- and short-term effects of sun damage,” Awadalla says. “And despite the consequences, they were hesitant to use sunscreen.” Research indicates that people are not very consistent when it comes to applying anything topically. Researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found

that only about 14% of men and 30% of women report regularly using sunscreen on both their faces and bodies. What’s more, says Raja Sivamani, assistant professor of clinical dermatology at the University of California Davis, the average person who uses sunscreen applies only a fraction of what is needed to protect their skin: one-fourth to one-half the recommended amount sunscreen. So Awadalla developed what is basically a vitamin cocktail in liquid or powder form that he says protects a

person from sun damage for three to five hours, depending on the individual’s skin tone and ability to absorb the vitamins. The drink, which comes in an orange-peach flavor, can be purchased in a small number of locations in California and Florida as well as on Amazon. While all the ingredients in his drinkable sunscreen are supplements you could find elsewhere, you would have to source the many vitamins individually and take between six to eight capsules in order to get the quantity that Awadalla’s drink provides, he says. Awadalla has conducted one study, available on his website, that shows the drink protects against sunburn. The sample size was small – 15 subjects – and the dermatologist says he plans to conduct additional research. He also says that he plans on submitting the study to a peer reviewed journal. While Awadalla says UVO gives users protection from the inside out, he cautions that people should not utilize only one method of sunblock. Like with conventional sunscreen, he recommends

using a hat or umbrella, too. Sivamani, who studies nutritional dermatology, says that more research into drinkable sun protection supplements is needed to learn exactly how they work and what layer of the skin they protect. At the same time, the professor says he would never tell a patient not to add extra sun protection to their existing arsenal if there is science supporting it. “Studies have shown that eating or drinking certain compounds, including tomato paste and green tea, can give you some protection from burning,” says Jessica Wu, a

Los Angeles dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. UVO contains antioxidants including lycopene, found in tomatoes, and polypodium leucotomos, a fern extract, both of which have some UV protecting effects.” But when it comes to drinkable sunscreens, they should be seen as “backup protection”, according to Wu. “I think the science is still early and we have to be careful before we talk about replacing tried and true methods,” Sivamani adds.

Are Your Medications Causing Bowel Problems?

Our gut is the first point of call for everything entering the body, and quite often we suffer gut problems brought on by what we are consuming. The gut is home to a variety of beneficial microbes otherwise called probiotics that help us digest food and absorb nutrients. These microbes are sensitive to changes in the digestive system; changes brought about by the foods and drugs that we ingest. Every chemical drug is a poison, and all drugs have an effect on the bodily systems. However, some drugs are more notorious than others. Many drugs affect the digestive systems since drugs have to pass through the digestive system to get to where they are needed in the body. The side effects of medications that affect the bowel range from mild abdominal discomfort, nausea, abdominal or stomach pain, constipation,

diarrhoea, and intestinal bleeding. The medications that have the most severe effects on the digestive system includes painkillers, anti-inflammatories such as steroids, proton pump inhibitors (for treating acid reflux), and antibiotics. Furthermore, many drugs that are used specifically for treating bowel problems will cause bowel problems. Painkillers are one of the most abused drugs, and they are so commonplace that most people don’t realise the danger they can cause. Painkillers relieve pain by suppressing the nervous system. Unfortunately, painkillers like most drugs affect the whole body, and will also suppress the nerves of the intestines, slowing down their contraction and causing all sorts of problems. Painkillers are also acidic in nature, and this creates even more problem

for the body. Although antibiotics are lifesaving drugs, they are mostly ineffective for treating digestive problems because the gut or digestive system relies on billions of healthy microbes or probiotics to function properly, and these microbes are very sensitive to the harmful effects of antibiotics. Antibiotics easily destroy probiotics, and a deficiency of probiotics will lead to a myriad of digestive disorders. Antibiotics also deplete the immune system by slowing down the activities of protective immune cells. Steroids cause the thinning of the linings of the stomach and intestines if taken for any length of time. Steroids are notorious for causing or worsening stomach and intestinal ulcers. Steroids also inhibit the immune system and encourage the proliferation of harmful bugs in the stomach and intestines causing more digestive problems. As a precaution, watch out for abdominal symptoms such as a change in your appetite, or change in bowel habits, when you start taking any medication, as this may indicate that you may be having an adverse effect to the medication. Pain In Spain? Are you struggling with pain? Is it the usual ‘wear and tear’ problems? It may be time to think about how much better life could be, if the pain was much less frequent and nothing more than a minor issue. We all come to the Costas, to relax and soak up the laid-back lifestyle. We don’t expect the onset of problematic back ache, sore feet, stiff legs, hip, knee or shoulder pain, to spoil our fun in the sun. If we were like cars, we would hope to change the oil, put on new tyres and keep the fuel topped up to keep going. But what happens when there is a major fault inside the engine? It has to be fixed before the car is able to go anywhere. Inside your body, your spine is similar to an engine. The health of your spine is central to your overall well-being. One of its primary functions is to support your whole body, keeping every limb and connecting joint in good order. The body has an extensive network of nerves, like a busy electrical circuit board, active 24/7, even when we are sleeping. The spine is like the main highway, channelling and connecting these nerves, from your brain down to your toes. When there is damage or trauma to your neck or back, for example, these conditions can become inflamed, causing nerve-trapping and therefore pain, often radiating out from where the injury has occurred to further down the ‘highway’. This is why we sometimes we feel pain in our hands (from possible shoulder damage), or in our knees (from issues with our lower back or hips). Shockwave Therapy Dr Hans Christian Madsen DC has many years’ experience using Shockwave therapy. As we age, calcifications can build up in our bodies. At his Chiropractic Clinic in Benijofar, he uses Shockwave Therapy to remove this calcification, which helps to release trapped nerves resulting in more movement and less pain. The treatment uses waves of sound which gently penetrate the tissues under the skin, gradually breaking down the calcification particles that build up around the vertebrae discs and joints. After this treatment, the particles are carried away in the bloodstream by the laser treatment, which follows. Laser Therapy Dr Madsen has developed his own specific low level lasers systems which can strengthen and heal damaged cells. They work by supplying energy to the body in the form of penetrating light. The tissues and cells absorb this energy where it is used to accelerate the normal rate of healing. It brings vital nutrients and fluids to cartilage and discs and increases blood flow to the injured area. If you would like to read more about the treatments and how they work, please visit the website:www.chiropractor-benijofar.esor email us:info@chiropractor-benijofar.es To discuss your pain situation or to book a consultation appointment we are open Monday/Wednesday/Friday 10:00 – 13:30 or afternoons, Tuesday/Thursday 15:00 – 18:00. Dave Silver

Friday 8th July 2016

Ha'penny For Your Thoughts I emerged from the dentist's with a still-anaesthetised gob and went immediately to the post office where I asked for 'six second-class stamps, please.' 'That's easy for you to say,' said the assistant with more than a touch of sarcasm as he hastily replaced his 'Position Closed' sign before my trails of dribble could land on the counter. 'Perhaps you should have organised your day with a little more forethought,' suggested Dave the barman down at the pub later. 'I mean, what possessed you to speak a sentence containing so many S-words when your mouth was still numb from having teeth out?' 'But I didn't have any teeth out,' I said. 'Okay, fillings, then' said Dave the barman. 'I had no fillings either,' I

said. There was a lengthy silence as Dave the barman and the other pubsters thought long and hard about what to say next. Another few minutes went slowly by and then everybody seemed to lose interest and began drifting away to the other end of the bar to watch a resumed game of shove ha'penny between Indoor Lou and Fearful Phil. The match had ended abruptly the night before when one of the ha'pennies had shot off the board and vanished down Ol' Red Eyes' throat. The old fellow as usual had been fast asleep on the pub floor with his mouth wide open. Ol' Red Eyes was taken to hospital and was to have been kept in until his near clapped-out digestion

process had reached its weary conclusion and the ha'penny had literally dropped. But the doctors and nurses rapidly had tired of perching the old guy on top of a bedpan without him going to asleep and falling off the thing. So they'd sent Ol' Red Eyes home (to the pub that is) with instructions that we should secure him by his braces over the loo and wait for the coin to materialise. You may well ask what all the fuss was about. For the missing ha'penny was merely a piece of obsolete pre-decimalisation coinage. But you had to remember that in our pub, Dave the barman had to accept the odd bit of the old currency -- farthings, ha'pennies, pennies, threepenny bits, sixpences, two shilling pieces, half-

crowns -- because that is all his strapped for cash clientele had in their tattered and torn trouser pockets. However, Dave the barman wasn't in much of a position to complain because he diluted all his drinks anyway. Thus neither side could be accused of one-sided unfairness in any transaction. Mind you, Dave the barman did tend to draw the line at accepting tap washers in lieu of cash, legal tender or not. But then along came Andromeda Arkwright, our latest leader and mentor and the only woman among us, who willingly paid for our drinks with bundles of proper folding money. The words 'Keep the change, Dave' were music to our barman's ears. He fell instantly in love with Andromeda and would have married her, albeit for her

money, at the clunk of a cash register. Anyway, back to our story . . .After we'd hosed down the aforementioned coin which Ol' Red Eyes had eventually delivered naturally, Indoor Lou and Fearful Phil were able to complete their game of shove ha'penny. The pubsters drifted back to the other end of the bar where I was still waiting for my anaesthetised mouth to un-numb itself. 'So if you haven't had any teeth out or had to undergo any fillings, why the hell did you need to have the injection in the first place?' my pub mates chorused. I shook my head in a vain attempt to clear it of the cotton-wool clouds of anaesthesia. 'Because, as you know, my dentist is my best friend Eric and he asked me to act as

guinea pig for a new anaesthetic he's produced and wanted to try out.' At which point my best friend Eric the dentist sauntered into the pub. 'Speak of the devil,' I commented. 'Sorry, would you mind repeating that?' asked Eric the dentist. 'I couldn't make out one word you said.' 'That's because of that flaming injection you gave me!' I said, enunciating each word slowly and carefully. 'Well, that proves your anaesthetic works. You jabbed me hours ago and I'm still numbed up!' 'Excellent,' said Eric the dentist, slapping me on the back. 'I must write to my project partners and give them the good news. 'Er, you don't happen to have six second-class stamps to spare?'

Tesla’s autopilot caused fatal crash

Investigation begins following world's first fatal self-driving accident

An accident between a Tesla Model S and a truck in Florida in May is being investigated by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after claims the pure-electric sedan’s Autopilot may have been responsible for the fatal collision. Commenting on the crash, US car-maker Tesla confirmed its semi-autonomous driving aid was unable to recognise “the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky” that had driven across the car’s path, leading to a collision that claimed the Model S driver, Joshua

Brown. Shortly after the NHTSA announced it had decided to investigate the crash, Tesla’s owner, Elon Musk, described the accident, on Twitter, as a “tragic loss”. Over the weekend the plot thickened when it was reported that Brown, 40, might have been too pre-occupied watching a movie to intervene and prevent the accident that eventually killed him. According to reports, the former Navy soldier was watching a Harry Potter film on a portable DVD player that was still playing moments

after the accident, according to a witness at the scene. It was reported later that Florida Highway Patrol had found a portable DVD player in Brown’s Model S. Brown had already posted an incident on Youtube that appeared to show the Model S’ autopilot saving the car from a collision with another truck. Before the accident Brown had described his Model S as the “best car I have ever owned”. Commenting on the fatal collision Tesla said, to date, the self-driving Autopilot had driven 130 million safe miles.

McLaren 570S Sprint unveiled at Goodwood Festival of Speed – first drive

McLaren unveiled the 570S Sprint at Goodwood. It’s the latest addition to the company’s Sport Series range – and as the name suggests, it’s at the hardcore end, with a roll cage added and some niceties removed to make it lighter and more focused on trackday use. It ought to be good, then. But it also oughtn’t be too much different to the rest of

the 570S range, which is already about as good as a car can get. Other changes to standard include race suspension and tyres, as well as a mighty great spoiler looming over the back end of the car. All of which sounded promising to us when we took the wheel for a quick spin up the Goodwood hill. The Sprint is more power-

ful than the GT4 racecar it’s based on, because it doesn’t

have to be limited to meet comp regs. And on its ultra-

sticky tyres, which the engine is still able to spin up, the gas pedal feels more like an on-off switch. And ‘on’ is full on. Go for the brakes and it stops just as hard as it goes, which is the mark of a properly quick car. But most of all, with its suspension sat there being all kinds of brilliant as the bumps in the Goodwood hill do their damnedest to

cause trouble, it’s just eyeopeningly easy to drive. Easy to drive, but what about being easy to drive fast? Yes, it’s that too. Quite how fast is something we’re still to discover, because one short blast up the hill is almost the dictionary definition of a teaser. But we’ve already seen enough of the Sprint to love the 570S more than ever.

Chris Evans quits Top Gear

Chris Evans is stepping down as presenter of Top Gear, following heavy criticism and poor viewing figures for the revamped BBC series. Evans tweeted: "Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. "The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best." In a statement he added: "I have never worked with a more committed and driven team than the team I have worked with over the last twelve months. "I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause. "I remain a huge fan of the

show, always have been, always will be. "I will continue to focus on my radio show and the allied events that it encompasses." Mark Linsey, director of BBC Studios, said: "Chris is stepping down from his duties on Top Gear. "He says he gave it his best shot doing everything he could to make the show a success. "He firmly believes that the right people remain, on both the production team and presenting team to take the show forward and make it the hit we want it to be. "The new series has so far notched up over 30 million views in the UK alone and has already been sold to 130

territories worldwide." Top Gear ended its new series on Sunday with its lowest audience so far. An average of 1.9 million viewers watched the final programme Evans will present - 8.6% of the available audience. More than 4 million tuned into the opening episode. Evans has been sensitive to the falling ratings, telling his 2.3 million Twitter followers that "overnight television viewing figures for Top Gear have never been less relevant." Former Top Gear presenter Sue Baker say she's not really surprised by Evans' decision, saying it "really wasn't working".

RICHARD CAVENDER

BlueMoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions come to you at home or work, our personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada. ADVICE: Jane wanted to know whether she could safely use her laptop out and about.

Q A

Hi Richard, Is it safe to use my laptop at an internet café or at a free Wi-Fi spot?.

Hi Jane, well it’s one of those “yes” and “no” answers that we experience so many times with computers. Back in 2009 I wrote an article about the dangers of shared Internet connections; you can read the full article here http://www.bluemoonsolutions.es/shared-internet but in short as long as you are sensible and careful, have your antivirus up to date and your Windows firewall turned on then you are as safe as you can be. The fact of the matter is that if you are using someone else’s Internet connection (bar, café etc.) then it’s possible for someone else to intercept what you are doing and collect information that you are sending / receiving, however it’s also fair to say that its quite unlikely that it will be happening because the skills involved in doing that type of hacking are quite specialist. I guess the best advice would be to not use your credit card in these situations and limit your time to just browsing the Internet, try not to use any sites that require you to enter sensitive information like your email password etc.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

FIXED: Lee was having problems with his laptop connecting to the Internet.

Q A

Hi Richard, I am getting an error message on my laptop saying there is a conflict with IP addresses and Icannot log on to the Internet. Do you have any ideas?

Hi Lee, yes this is a pretty straight forward one where there are more than one computer in the house connecting to the Internet, sometimes more than one computer will get given the same IP address (the ‘unique’ number that allows you to communicate with the Internet), this results in a conflict and usually the easiest way to resolve the conflict is to restart your computer, so try that first. If it happens often then we may need to look at changing some of the settings on your router. Update:Perfect, that worked a treat thanks!

Martino quits The 53-year-old departs just days after Argentina lost on penalties to Chile in the Copa America final. In a statement Martino indicated he quit because of a "lack of decisions" at the head

Pistorius: Gets Six Years

South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. It comes after his initial fiveyear conviction for manslaughter was changed to murder last December on appeal. He was taken immediately to jail. Both the prosecution and defence can appeal, but his lawyers say they will not. Pistorius, 29, shot Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in February 2013. He admitted shooting her, but said he had mistaken Ms Steenkamp for an intruder and acted out of fear. Judge Thokozile Masipa said mitigating circumstances, such as rehabilitation and remorse, outweighed aggravating factors, such as his failure to fire a warning shot, for deviating from the prescribed 15-year sentence. Many have expressed shock at Pistorius's sentence, which is much less than the prescribed minimum for murder. South Africans have taken to social media to express their unhappiness, with some describing the prison term as an insult. Outside court, legal experts said the sentence was too little. "The judge was sympathetic and empathetic to Pistorius. It was clear in the

Losing the first wicket with only nine runs on the board, wickets fell tone of her entire judgement," steadily. With seven batsmen one said. But Judge Masipa said she had carefully considered the circumstances around Reeva Steenkamp's death and her sentence needed to be fair to both Pistorius and the family of the deceased. South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, and some say a short sentence will send the wrong message to would-be-offenders. Dressed in a dark suit, Pistorius sat and listened to the hour-long session mostly with his head down. He hugged his tearful sister after the verdict, and was taken to Pretoria's Khosi Mampuru prison. Ms Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, sat quietly on the other side of the courtroom, packed with journalists and other observers. The Rise Of The Super Coach Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe have all joined the coaching staff of the cream of men's tennis so what do they bring to the team? Grand Slam winning coaches can provide invaluable advice to their proteges as they progress through the majors. These superstar names have been in nerve-wracking situations, fought back from the near impossible and kept a level head to get themselves over the line and win the biggest prizes in tennis. The relationship between coach and player is delicate; both will be highly driven and emotionally invested, and although this can lead to passionate success, the combination can also lead sparks to fly. There are a variety of coaching styles throughout the men's game. The closeknit relationship between Novak Djokovic and Boris Becker is clear, as the

German is an ever-present courtside. John McEnroe, who has been working with Milos Raonic, has to balance his coaching with television duties. There are some players, such as Nick Kyrgios, who play without a coach to fit their unorthodox routines. Whatever the coaching schedule, when it comes to the latter stages of tournaments, the importance of having a proven champion in your corner cannot be understated.

Get A Grip On Cleaning When was the last time you decided to clean your golf clubs? Do you clean them after every game? Do you regularly check the state of your clubs? Do you know that unclean clubs can not only cost you more shots but also reduces the life of your cherished clubs? We all know Golf is an expensive sport and all this starts with buying your expensive clubs. So why not take proper

care of your clubs which will not only improve your game but will also elongate their life. Do you know that golf clubs are an engineering marvel which are designed to give you a perfect swing, that accurate shot and the appropriate lift to the ball? The grooves which you see on the face of the clubs serve a specific purpose. The golf club face is designed to hit the

golf ball to give it a certain rpm ranging from 3600 to 6000 and above! The grooves are very vital because when you hit a golf shot, you control your shot by the spin that you put on the ball and you get a good spin when the club face bites the dimples on the golf ball accurately. These grooves on the club face are designed to be able to make your shot more accurate by provid-

ing that perfect bite on the golf ball. Having said that, it is easy to understand that when your club grooves are dirty or have grass and grime stuck on it, it would not bite the golf ball properly thus causing you additional shots in game. Moreover cleaning the club hand grips is also very vital. Grips on your golf clubs are designed to absorb moisture, sweat and greasy ail-

ments to provide stability and tackiness to your grip on the club. After a certain period of time, the grip starts losing their stiffness due to excessive oil, sand and grime and thus it becomes problematic to handle the club. Experienced golfers very well understand the importance of clean grips and know that even a minute slip or discomfort with the grip can cause a

bad game. Sweaty and dirty grips can cause bad swings with the discomfort level being so unknown that sometimes you would actually find it difficult to recognize the reason behind your bad game. Avid golfers globally acknowledge the importance and need to keep the golf clubs at the neatest best all the time, for them to at their peak of the game.

How can you clean your clubs? There are many ways that you can clean your golf clubs and experience a better game whilst extending the life of your equipment. These are the fundamental old-school cleaning methods and also the most advanced way of cleaning your golf clubs:1) Use your Golf Tee: As old-school as it looks but when on the fairways and getting ready for your next shot, you can simply scrape the grime & sand from the grooves of your iron with the help of the golf tee.

2) Towel: When on the field, you can gently wipe the irons & woods with a wet towel or cloth. This is of course till the time you are over with your rounds of play. Cleaning with towel will help remove excessive dirt off the club face and may give you a manageable improved game. 3) Soap Wash: You require a bucket full of warm water, with few spoons of detergent, a piece of cloth or brush with medium harsh bristles and a dry towel. You can arrange a

bucket full of warm water (up to 40-50 Degree Celsius) and immerse your golf clubs inside the bucket. Leave the clubs drenched for three to five minutes, and then gently brush each iron & wood until you are sure that the dirt is gone. Then gently wipe each iron & other clubs with a dry towel. You can repeat the process with different buckets depending upon the level of contamination of the clubs and can use the same process for hand grip cleaning as well. This process is tiring and time consuming

though but necessary for a good game of golf. 4) Small Brush kits: Nowadays there are some small brush-kits available in the market which can be readily hooked on the club set bag and have a string attached to it. You can simply pull the brush out from the club bag and clean the grooves to remove sand, dust and grass when in the middle of the game. 5) Club Cleaning Sprays: There are some club cleaning sprays available in

the market which claims to be non-hazardous but I recommend that you thoroughly check the data sheet and compliance of the product before using it on your expensive clubs. 6) Ultrasonic Golf Club Cleaner: Amongst all the old school & tiring cleaning techniques of club & hand grip cleaning, Ultrasonic Golf Club cleaning is the most advanced way of cleaning your clubs today. This is essentially a machine which uses high power sound waves inside a

chamber full of water and uses ultrasonic cleaning technique to clean your clubs heads & hand grips. The machine is as easy to use as a conventional washing machine and can clean your complete set of clubs in less than 10 minutes with cleaning level significantly higher than cloth cleaning or scrubbing. These machines are sometimes seen at various courses and provide an ecofriendly cleaning method for club cleaning. Now you are ready to play that round of your dreams!!!

TITTER ON THE TEE A guy goes to the supermarket and notices a woman waving at him. She says, 'Hello.' He's rather taken aback because he can't place where he knows her from. So he asks, 'Do you know me?' To which she replies, 'I think you're the father of one of my kids.' Now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife. So he asks, 'Are you the stripper from the stag party that I made love to with all my mates watching?’ She looks into his eyes and says calmly, 'No, I'm your son's teacher.'

Elche’s Cash Back Woe Elche are amongst seven La Liga clubs that have been ordered by the European Commission to give back millions of euros in national and regional government support in a ruling that threatens the cash-strapped Segunda division club’s very existence. The Ilicitanos are in the EU’s line of fire along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are all said to have benefited from soft loans, tax breaks and property deals from the government over the past 26 years. Under EU law, governments may not distort competition through their provision of state aid to commercial enterprises. Margrethe Vestager, the EU competi-

tion commissioner, demanded the beginning of repayments on Monday. "Using taxpayers' money to finance professional football clubs can create unfair competition," Vestager said in a statement. "Professional football is a commercial activity with significant money involved and public money must comply with fair competition rules." Real Madrid are to be forced to pay back €18.4million of state support from a complex land deal which was issued from a local authority in the Spanish capital. It relates to a series of controversial land deals in the 1990s which included Real Madrid transferring part

of their old training ground to city officials as part of the redevelopment of Madrid. In return, Real were handed other plots of land around the city to help them develop - some of which have reportedly been revalued to the financial advantage of the club. Real, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna benefitted from a lower corporate tax rate for more than 20 years. They paid 25 per cent rather than the 30 per cent common for sports firms and all four are being forced to pay back €5million. Elche, Alicante-based Hercules, Valencia are also being forced to return the money the Valencian region-

Rooney Is Not A Midfielder

Jose Mourinho has told Wayne Rooney that he will no longer play in midfield for Manchester United while he is in charge. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has stressed Wayne Rooney's future at Old Trafford is in attack rather than in midfield. The experienced forward, 30, regularly featured in midfield under Louis van Gaal last campaign, while he also held a similar role for England at Euro 2016. Nevertheless, Mourinho is adamant scoring goals remains Rooney's biggest strength and will no longer play in such a deep position.

Torry Friendlies CD Torrevieja start their pre-season training next week and have announced two friendly matches ahead of next month’s start to season. Torry will host a match against Segunda division Elche on Saturday July 23rd at the Vicente Garcia stadium, and then the following Saturday, they entertain Real Murcia at the same venue. Both games kick-off at 7.30pm, with more preseason fixtures to be announced.

al government’s Institute of Finance handed them due to the European Commission ruling. At the time, those clubs were in financial difficulties. The public guarantee allowed the clubs to obtain the loans on more favourable terms. As the clubs paid no adequate remuneration for the guarantees, this gave them an economic advantage over other clubs, who have to raise money without state backing. The Ilicitanos have been told they owe three point seven million euros, whilst Hercules owe just over six million, and Valencia have been landed with a massive bill of over 20 million euros.

Del Bosque Goes

Vicente Del Bosque is staying with the national football federation in an unspecified role after stepping down as Spain coach, it was confirmed on Monday. The 65-year-old spoke of his intention to quit after Spain's defeat by Italy in the Euro 2016 second round last week and the Federation (RFEF), which persuaded him to stay after he offered to quit in 2014, said it had accepted the decision this time. "RFEF President Angel Maria Villar and Spanish Head Coach Vicente del Bosque held a meeting today, July 4th, in Madrid where the coach has informed the president he wishes to no longer manage the national side," a statement said. "Angel Maria Villar considers Vicente del Bosque to be

'Spanish heritage' and has offered him the chance to continue in the Federation, to which Del Bosque has agreed. His new position will be unveiled in coming weeks." No announcement about a successor has been made. Del Bosque's reputation as the national team's most successful manager is assured after he followed Spain's 2008 European Championship win under Luis Aragones with two more major trophies. In 2010, Del Bosque masterminded their only World Cup victory in South Africa, following by more silverware in the 2012 European Championship, held jointly in Poland and Ukraine. That success proved the team's high-water mark and they were knocked out of the group stage in the 2014 World Cup and again failed to make the later stages of Euro 2016 in France. "I have no intention to remain as coach." Del Bosque said after the Italy defeat. "No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would be." Del Bosque also prospered at club level, managing Real Madrid to two European Cups and La Liga titles in four years in charge.

Not Long To Wait! About five short weeks actually (writes JOHN MCGREGOR) – Saturday August 13th! Yes, that’s the start of the new Premier League season. I know we haven’t even finished Euro 2016 yet, but with 24 teams starting it was always going to be a long tournament. But boy, this new campaign of top world soccer in the Premier League is going to be a belter, as there is so much excitement and potential with the big boys already gearing themselves up for big business. Arguably the city that centres on the most football excitement is Manchester. In the Red corner, United’s new manager Jose Mourinho has wasted no time in dramatically changing things from Louis van Gaal’s very modest reign at Old Trafford. Defender Eric Bailly and the much-travelled Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic are already there. Midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan(pictured with Mourinho) signed on Wednesday from Borussia Dortmund, leaving the acquisition of French midfielder Paul Pogba to executive vice chairman Ed Woodward's as possibly United’s final key piece of transfer dealings this close season. What a capture and (re) signing Pogba would be after his tremendous performances for France in Euro 2016, boding well for United’s new season. There’s a lot happening of pre-season activity at the Theatre of Dreams: a warm-up at Wigan, a three-game tour of China, a match in Sweden against Galatasaray, Wayne Rooney's Old Trafford testimonial against Everton, and the Community Shield against Leicester at Wembley, all before the Premier League kicks in which gives a whole host of first-team squad members to show Mourinho what they can do. Is anyone’s place safe? Probably only David de Gea, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and possibly Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw can rest a little easier than most, but question marks remain with many others who have a lot to prove, and quickly to Mourinho. Over in the Blue corner, mightily-wealthy City now have the great Spaniard Pep Guardiola in charge, and already working hard, he has signed Oleksandr Zinchenko, the Ukraine international arguably landing one of Europe’s hottest prospects. City are now pondering whether to pay the most expensive fee ever for a defender to land Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus. £51m sounds like a lot of money, although it would only be £1m more than PSG paid for David Luiz. City badly need dominant central back cover with giant captain Vincent Kompany’s future in doubt with his long injury problems causing worry at the Etihad. Champions Leicester, having retained the services of one Jamie Vardy, have already improved the Foxes side with the signing of French midfielder Nampalys Mendy from Nice, who described joining Premier League champions Leicester City as a dream come true. Well, at the King Power Stadium the dream well and truly came last season with a fairy tale story as Leicester confounded all their critics – including this one – to amazingly win the Premier League. Again? Now that really would be astounding!

Everton want £50million if they are to let in-demand centre back John Stones leave Goodison Park this summer. Stones, 22, is wanted by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but will only be allowed to move for a price that would make him Britain’s most-expensive defender. New Everton manager Ronald Koeman is still to meet with his full squad but Stones is once again emerging a target of the Premier League elite despite not playing a minute for England at Euro 2016 this summer.

England, and that Allardyce is a logical option when only three English managers are currently employed in the top flight. "It's very difficult to think of the right man and there are only three English managers in the Premier League. With Sam (Allardyce)'s experience, he is the obvious choice. "Sam's the best English candidate because he's in the Premier League."

FOOTBALL West Ham have turned down the chance to resign Carlos Tevez because the Argentine striker wants £250,000 a week. Chairman David Sullivan confirmed the Hammers had offered Tevez, currently with Boca Juniors, a contract on £150,000 a week, which would have made him the highestpaid player in the club's history. But the 32-year-old demanded much more, to the disappointment of Sullivan, although he remains confident a deal can be done. FOOTBALL Liverpool's owners have approached Jurgen Klopp about extending his contract. The former Borussia Dortmund boss moved to Anfield in October 2015 on a contract that runs until 2018.
