TOURISTS TRAPPED

British couple were trapped in their motorhome after it careered off a notorious Costa Blanca blackspot road, with the drama unfolding on Wednesday lunchtime on the N-332 in the Santa Pola area. The 71-year-old disabled driver, who had the vehicle specially adapted because he’s a paraplegic, was travelling with his 69year-old wife when their motorhome came off the road and went into the salt lake. Park rescued the couple by creating a makeshift bridge over the water by using a ladder. The injured Brits, who were travelling with their dog in their British registered motorhome, a were then taken to Elche General Hospital, with initial reports suggesting that they suffered bruising and possible fractures. The Guardia Civil said that no other vehicle was involved in the incident, which happened around noon.

ig passenger rises for Alicante-Elche airport continued last month with a 25 percent increase in users in March compared to a year earlier. Over 837 thousand people travelled via the facilities at El Altet, with over five thousand nine hundred flights last month, up by a quarter on the same period in 2015. Some of the increases would have been accounted by Easter being earlier this year, but the rising figures are in tandem with 20 percent rises over the first two months of 2016. UK travellers accounted for 333 thousand passengers in March, followed by

Germany in a distant second with 62 thousand, and Holland third with 51 thousand. So far for 2016, just over two million passengers have used Alicante-Elche airport, with an overall rise of 22 percent on the returns for last year, as the facility is well set for a massive record-breaking year. Meanwhile more flights and an earlier Easter, saw San Javier airport record a 71 percent increase on the March returns compared to 2015, but still very modest compared to Alicante-Elche, with 51 thousand passengers using the Murcia regional facility.

Orihuela’s City’s twicedelayed Medieval Market will definitely take place between Friday April 22nd and Sunday April 24th, after auditor Fernando Urruticoechea approved the one remaining contender for the contract, Balconet, who will also pay a six thousand euro fee to the council. Underfire Fiestas councillor, Mariola Rocamora, made the announcement on Wednesday, after the authority invited five companies to bid for the contract, and only Balconet and Rivendell came forward. Rivendell was ruled out on technical grounds a few days earlier, which left Balconet, organisers of the event in 2012 and 2013, as the sole bidder. The formal signing of the deal by the contracts councillor Paco Sáez took place yesterday with Rocamora saying

that Balconet fulfilled every single requirement of the tender. An advertising campaign for the event has already been launched, even before a winning tender was announced. The market has twice been shunted amidst controversy, firstly from the traditional time of early February(where it will return to next year) on the grounds of building work at the Plaza Santa Lucía and the prospect of better April weather; and then from the beginning of this month when the only bidder to run the Market did not pass the technical threshold. One consequence of the date shuffling is that Orihuela’s first ever Sports Fair had to be moved three times, after two scheduled weekends in April clashed with possible stagings of the Market. The event will now be held on the weekend starting on Friday May 6th.

The National Police have pulled up five British people on the northern Costa Blanca for their involvement in an illegal horse race betting ring, with the cops staging a raid last Saturday on the afternoon of the Grand National. Five British residents from La Nucía, l'Alfàs del Pi and Benidorm were

The police knew that business would be brisk on Grand National day and so they pounced having spent a few weeks investigating the illegal racket, seizing

Double Deceit A man who pushed his lucky by filing not one but two fake insurance claims totalling 10 thousand euros for two house robberies has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The 45-year-old Spaniard from El Campello near Alicante City filed two bogus forms for two separate addresses last year and has been charged with fraud and falsifying robberies.

Death At Sea A 71-year-old man died of a heart attack when a sailing dinghy hit his fishing boat off Tabarca island on Saturday morning. The dinghy, with a 60-year-old man in it collided with the craft which had two people on board, including the deceased victim, who was taken to Elche General Hospital but was unable to be resuscitated. The Guardia Civil in Santa Pola along with the Maritime Service are investigating the incident.

Big Stash Five people who are accused of storing cocaine that had a street value of almost a million euros are facing jail time of up to eight years each as they face an Alicante Provincial Court hearing in Elche this week. The alleged offences happened in 2014, with the drugs being stored in properties in Santa Pola, Sax, and Murcia. An unlicensed gun was also seized in the police raids on the homes.

Pulled Over Two men have been arrested by the National Police in the Alicante city area after their lorry was stopped en route from Lorca in the Murcia region and an 800 kilo stash of marijuana discovered in it. One of the men was refused bail and the case is under a legal gag, with no further information disclosed like their nationality. In early March, a 24year-old British lorry driver was arrested in Catral after the National Police found 43 kilos of marijuana in his vehicle which was destined for the United Kingdom. The Courier previously reported that authorities had been working on stopping an operation which involved smuggling drugs in lorries from Lorca over to Britain.

Where Eagles Dare

The Spanish royal family is set to use eagles in their war against drones flying over their home, the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid. Their official residence was buzzed by drones in July last year but the Royal Guard was unable to capture any of them or discover

who sent them. But after hearing about a Dutch police initiative called Guard From Above, bird trainer Jesus Gomez bought a drone and began training his eagles to catch it and bring it to ground. Now King Felipe and his family want to use them to patrol

the skies over Zarzuela having heard about Gomez has achieved. Although the owners of last summer's drones were never identified it is possible they were employed by paparazzi seeking an exclusive picture of the royal family.

“Gag” Law Strikes Again

Spain plans to ask the European Commission for an extra year to meet its public deficit targets, after missing the mark with its 2015 deficit and raising the prospect of further spending cuts to narrow the budget gap. The country last month reported a 2015 deficit of five percent of economic output, one of the largest in Europe and above the EUagreed target of four point

two percent. The bottom line is that the government will have to find another 23 billion euros from somewhere either through public spending cuts or putting up taxes, both of which are dangerous for the acting Partido Popular government with a June general election likely. The acting Economy Minister, Luis de Guindos, is set present his revised economic projects to Parliament this Tuesday.

A magazine has said one of its photographers has been fined under Spain’s so-called gag law for posting photographs of police making an arrest. Argia magazine said Axier Lopez was fined 601 euros for uploading photographs to his Twitter account last month of police arresting a woman who had failed to appear in court. The Interior Ministry said that the fine was for publishing photographs without authorisation and putting the officers at risk because they could be identified publicly. The Spanish Federation of Journalist Associations condemned the penalty and said it was the second

known case of a journalist being fined, though in the first case last month the fine was withdrawn. Lopez said he and the magazine had agreed not to pay the latest fine. The Partido Popular government’s 2015 Public Security Law, dubbed the

gag law, has been criticised by opposition parties, United Nations experts, journalists and rights groups, who say it curtails free assembly and expression. Opposition parties say they will ditch the law if they take over running the government.

Suitcase Charges Sabadell will not now face a hefty payment towards bail for eight former executives of the now defunct CAM bank after a judge reduced the amount to a fraction of the one

point six billion euros originally ordered. The court had said last week that the eight former executives of savings bank Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo or CAM

would stand trial for allegedly concealing the bank's deteriorating finances during Spain's banking crisis to keep their bonuses safe. The trial does not yet have a start date. The judge said at the time that Sabadell, Spain's fifth biggest bank, would be partly responsible for covering the bail because it had bought CAM in 2011 for a single euro after it was bailed out with five billion euros of state funds. But last Thursday, after a petition from Sabadell, Judge Carmen Lamela said the previous bail had been set in error and revised it to 25.6 million euros.

False Promises Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Bulgarian man whose body parts were found in two suitcases dumped last July by the Rabasa Lakes, a few kilome-

tres out of Alicante City. The arrests were all made in Alicante by the Guardia Civil and involved the detention of a Russian man and his girlfriend, in addition to two people of Ecuadorian nationality.

Prosecutors at the Alicante Provincial court have asked for a total of 195 years behind bars for eleven defendants who are accused of exploiting foreign women in five sex clubs across Spain, including one in Villena in Alicante Province. One person who

had been arrested on charges has since died, whilst another had gone “on the run”. The trial started this week of the group who used false promises to entice women to come to Spain from mainly Paraguay, with waitress work allegedly lined up

for them, but instead they were forced to work in brothels at places like Ibiza and Mallorca, as well as Villena. Ten of the eleven defendants, four of which are women, pled guilty to being members of a criminal gang that sexually exploited women.

Carmen’s Call

Torrevieja's Animal Protection councillor has called on neighbouring municipalities to join forces to let dog owners know about keeping to the law and for authorities to work together on a common structure on local ordinances. Carmen Morate made the plea at Guardamar's first-ever Animal Protection Day which also discussed measures to curb animal abuse. In a separate move, Morate announced this week that nine thousand dog dirt bags will be made

available to local Torrevieja shops, bars, and restaurants for them to hand out to people who they spot letting their dogs do their business in front of their premises without clearing up, as

well as to owners who ask for them. The bags will also feature messages written in Spanish, German, and English in addition to promoting shopping in Torrevieja.

Mortgage Victory 40 banks are facing a five billion euro bill after a court ruled that millions of fixed minimum rate mortgages were null and void because of the “lack of transparency” in the way they were sold during the property boom in Spain. The ruling in a Madrid commercial court comes in response to a class action suit on behalf of 15 thousand. The mortgages contain what is known as a cláusula suelo, which fixes a minimum monthly payment. So, while still a variable rate mortgage, the bank sets a cut-off point below which payments are not allowed to fall.

The banks, include Caixa, Barclays, Bankia, and Banco Santander. Caixa and Bankia abolished cláusula suelo mortgages last year. The decision was anticipated by the banking sector and

many have already made provisions for a payout. They have a fortnight left to appeal against the ruling. The clauses were introduced to protect banks from negative interest rates.

Conde’s Charges The former boss of Spain’s Banesto bank, Mario Conde, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil, with the exbanker already having served time for embezzlement. The National Court said Conde, 67, his daughter and six others were arrested Monday on suspicion of money laundering and tax fraud. Conde, a flamboyant entrepreneur in the 1980s, was chairman of Banco Espanol

de Credito, or Banesto, when it was taken over in 1993 after an audit revealed a shortfall of three point six billion euros. Conde was sentenced to 20 years in jail in 2002 for embezzlement and fraud but was released on parole in 2005. The court said Monday that Conde is believed to have been secretly bringing back into Spain money he had embezzled from the bank.

Polls Apart

Bickering between Spain's far-left Podemos party and the PSOE Socialists over trying to form a coalition government escalated at the end of last week leading experts to predict that the country is heading for a second general election within six months. If no administration is in place by May 2nd, another election will be held on Sunday June 26th. Podemos' leader, Pablo Iglesias (pictured), said that his party's members will vote this week on whether to support or oppose a deal for the Socialists and the centrist Ciudadanos party to form a government after nearly four months of political stalemate. He suggested he opposed a deal, say-

A left-wing political party is trying to take acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, to court for crimes against humanity over his support of a European Union deal to send refugees back to Turkey. The Izquierda Unida have filed papers because Rajoy has backed the deal which sees Syrian refugees arriving on the Greek islands getting sent back to Turkey in return for Turkish asylum

seekers being allowed into Europe. The leader of the Izquierda Unida (IU) Alberto Garzon said: "Mr.Rajoy is making us accomplices in this atrocity." The party filed its complaint to the Supreme Court in Madrid, accusing Rajoy and other European leaders of agreeing to forcibly deport and transfer an unspecified number of people from EU territory.

ing he felt "betrayed" a day after meeting with negotiators for the PSOE and Ciudadanos, who have a deal to form a government but lack parliamentary support which Podemos could deliver. Iglesias said proposals made by Podemos for its support "were received with inflexibility" by the Socialists and Ciudadanos. That prompted the PSOE spokesman Antonio Hernando to accuse Iglesias of spoiling any chances of a deal and betraying voters who want an agreement. The right-wing Partido Polular came in first in December’s election but fell way short of its 2011-2015 parliamentary majority. The

Socialists came second and newcomers Podemos and Ciudadanos took third and fourth. Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy decided in January against trying to form a government because he lacked support. So King Felipe VI offered the task to Socialist leader Pablo Sanchez. The Socialists and Ciudadanos could form a government with Podemos' votes, or abstentions, in the 350-seat lower house of Parliament. One of the biggest issues threatening a deal is Podemos' commitment to allowing the northeastern Catalonia region to hold a secession referendum. The Socialists and Ciudadanos are adamantly opposed to such a vote.

Soria has denied the claims. “I have never had any shares, any participation, nor any management post or directorship in UK Lines,” he insisted in a news conference at Lanzarote on Monday. Digging A Big Hole When are politicians finally going to learn that it pays to be totally honest and to give a straight answer to a direct question? David Cameron displayed complete political naivety over the Panamagate affair, realising that the leak of transactions from the Panamabased law firm Mossack Fonseca, was the most toxic to hit the rich and devious for years. That being so, he should have realised the absolute importance of being totally transparent about his own or family dealings with Panama. Amongst the leaked documents was one which showed that Cameron's father had money in an offshore trust set up by Mossack Fonseca, and young Cameron inherited the unit trust fund on his dad’s death. Nothing wrong with that - and the prime

minister benefited from dividends on which he paid UK taxes. He sold the investment in 2010 prior to becoming prime minister. All well and good. Bear in mind this is a unit trust invested in a package of companies and not just one. The heat was turned on David Cameron within hours of the Panama leak, and he should have been upfront with everything. He would have come out of it smelling of roses, but now his credability stinks. Here's the timeline on Cameron's wriggling. Asked on Monday last week whether she could confirm that no family money was still invested in the fund, Mr Cameron's spokeswoman said: "That is a private matter." Then in an interview on Tuesday, Cameron said: " I have no shares, no offshore trusts, no offshore funds,

nothing like that. And, so that, I think, is a very clear description." Downing Street issued a statement later that day: "To be clear, the prime minister, his wife and their children do not benefit from any offshore funds. The prime minister owns no shares. As has been previously reported, Mrs Cameron owns a small number of shares connected to her father's land, which she declares on her tax return." Downing Street then released a further clarifying statement on Wednesday, saying: "There are no offshore funds/trusts which the prime minister, Mrs Cameron or their children will benefit from in future." On Thursday the PM came clean. He told ITV News: "We owned 5,000 units in Blairmore Investment Trust, which we sold in January, 2010."

The public were then subjected to a string of Tory grandees trying to defend Cameron as to why he hadn't come clean on the Monday. "He was trying to defend his father's honour," "He was very busy dealing with the steel crisis," " he has all the problems of dealing with the EU referendum" were three of the excuses trotted out. What crass stupidity! If he achieved anything by being devious it was to increase the stress on him. Cameron has been preaching transparency over the financial affairs of the rich so that they pay the UK tax which morally and legally they should pay. Cameron, by not being transparent himself can rightly be accused of hypocrisy. And that, for a prime minister is serious. How can people now believe that his support for

continuing membership of the EU is more in support of his rich friends and benefiting the "great and good" at the head of big businesses, rather than for the betterment of the United Kingdom? No wonder straw polls since the revelations have shown Cameron's popularity as PM taking a nose-dive. And when people start to wonder whether a prime minister is promoting policies for the gain of a few rather than the majority, it starts the process of asking whether he's a fit and proper person to hold that office. I believe that the rot has set in - and when we hear that more than nine million pounds of public money has been spent on posting a “Stay in Europe booklet to every home in Britain, it is even more questionable. Cameron's ridiculous decision not to be financially

transparent, and his sending out of a pro-EU mailshot may have wider implications, as he provokes undecided voters to quit the EU as a protest against the establishment. Personally, I don't think that someone who shows so much politicial naivity can and should remain as PM. And all this ridiculous nonsense has deflected people's attention to the real issues. Yes, MP's tax affairs should be transparent and I welcome moves to achieve that including Cameron's decision to publish his tax affairs. But the real issue is for a government to close each and every tax loophole available both to businesses and individuals and never to create any more so that there's a no nonsense law which states "what you earn is what you pay tax on" no ifs, no buts, no exceptions!

Time To Sterlise Angela Wrightman, 39, was a lonely alcoholic who did not eat properly, but was "kind and house proud". She would invite anyone in for company and people would take advantage of her. Two girls, aged 13 and 14, visited her in December, 2014, and inflicted horrendous injuries on her using a shovel, TV set, computer printer, ceramic vase, picture frame, glass ornament and kettle as

weapons, inflicting more than 100 injuries including "gratuitous degradation". When the giggling girls left the house, after taking pictures on their smartphones, they called police for a lift home. The woman was found dead the next day. Both girls were mentally damaged, living in care. The older one had previously been abandoned by her mother who wanted nothing

to do with her and made that completely clear telling her to "f... off and kill yourself". This is an extreme example of what is so badly wrong in society today. There's an increasing number of people should never have children they are not fit and proper people to have the responsibility of bringing up the next generation. As a result it is left to the State, in the shape of council care homes and

social workers, to take on the parental responsibility and this is often sadly lacking - young, vulnerable children cannot be watched 24/7. That's why so many are lured by predators into prostitution, others are lured into gangs while others just start a lifetime of crime. Society must find a way of preventing the dregs of society from breeding, because that's the root cause of all

this misery. Sadly, the benefits system has provided the means for those who are least responsible in the art of parenthood to be able to produce - some women finding it a life choice to have a baby a year to live a life on benefits. Perhaps soon science may find a way to temporarily sterilise babies at birth, with the process reversed when it can be proved they

are responsible enough and mature enough and stable enough to do the most important thing in their lives, to nurture the next generation. Then, perhaps we will hear less of horrendous crimes like these two sad girls, whose lives have been ruined before they have hardly started, as they were both given life jail sentences with a minimum tariff of 15 years.

Weapons Found

The Guardia Civil have discovered a hidden weapons cache and a home-made Islamic State flag in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in Morocco, and are investigating a possible connection to Islamist militants. The cache of four pistols, including an air gun modified to shoot live ammunition, two Scorpion sub-machine guns, ammunition and variety of knives, was found in perfect condition and buried on wasteland last Thursday. Spanish authorities have detained 15 people with suspected links to Islamic State militants so far this year and 102 peo-

Botch Job Wins!

A widely criticised restoration of an ancient Spanish castle has won a prestigious international architecture prize. The fiveyear refurbishment of Matrera castle, a 1,000-year-old fortress near Cádiz, was the focus of a bitter clash between traditionalists and modernists. Its dilapidated structure was shored up and returned to its original dimensions in a project many saw as a botched

attempt to impose a modernist white cube on the original fabric. However, the project was shortlisted in the global Architizer A+ awards and on Tuesday it won the popular vote in the architecture and preservation category. Carlos Quevedo, the architect who oversaw the project, expressed his delight at the prize. He will travel to New York next month to collect the award.

Another suspect tried to hide cash which was later confiscated from window boxes outside his home when he realised the Guardia had rumbled him. APAH Boost

The APAH Animal Rescue Charity was contacted recently by Peter Ferries, who was recently voted in as the Club 25 Serena, who in turn are members of La Serena Golf Club in Los Alcazares. The charity was delighted to be invited to visit the club and accept a donation of 315 euros, raised through 'fines' levied throughout the year when players hit their golf balls into water located on holes one and seventeen.

The Asociacion Protectora De Animales Horadada (APAH) became a Registered Association in 2000. The group get no official funding, and they carry on their work through money raised in their three charity shops in Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas and San Pedro del Pinatar. That operation is supplemented by their Sunday market stall, donations and fund raising events.

My Dog Gets Scared

Fear and aggression are two of the most common behaviour problems encountered in dogs, and sometimes aggressive dogs are actually fearful dogs. Dogs that are frightened have specific postures and behaviours. A pet that is frightened or worried stands with its head lower than its back. It avoids eye contact and may freeze or attempt to escape. Its ears are laid back against its head and its tail is tucked between its legs. Its mouth is closed or slightly ajar. It may tremble and keep distance between it and the person or thing it fears. Some dogs growl when they are frightened or feeling threatened. Females, in particular, may urinate or, in extreme cases, defecate. If the dog runs away, it looks back over its shoulder to be

sure it is not being pursued. WHY IS MY DOG FRIGHTENED? There are three reasons that dogs become fearful in multiple situations:Basic Temperament Of The Pet: Some dogs are just wired more fearful than others. Dogs are just like people in this respect. Some are braver than others. There is a good side to moderate fearfulness. These pets tend to stay close to home and not get into the dangerous situations overly outgoing dogs do. These are the "scaredy cats" that take several days to recover after a visit to the vets or have to be carried in on their next visit. So make your goal improvement not necessarily cure. And always remember that some

elements of your dog's temperament and personality have genetic components that we cannot change. Early Socialisation: Some dogs were not properly socialised when they were puppies. Bad Experiences In The Past: Some dogs are fearful of a specific situation because of a bad experience that occurred in the past. They may have been yelled at or hit in circumstances they did not understand. Fearfulness in a single situation is much easier to overcome with training than dogs that are fearful in multiple situations. Often fear and obsessive/compulsive behaviour occurs in the same dog. What To Do? Dogs rarely get over

fearfulness without some help from you. If you do not correct the problem it may get worse with time. Dogs that are in pain can be fearful that you might touch a specific area of their body. Sometimes tender ears are the reason pets are fearful about having their head touched. You should rule out problems of this through taking your dog to the vet. Treating fear is much like treating allergies, one minimizes the problem through desensitization and conditioning. In doing so, you need to be confident and unambiguous with your pet. If that's just not you, enlist the help of a professional dog trainer or a cooperative friend. Sometimes you have to make the changes - not your pet. We will look at those changes next week!

Watch This Space For A Sci-Fi High Adventure I HAD the strangest dream the other evening. I was departing the pub when an unidentified flying object landed outside the post office. 'If you want to post a letter, I'm afraid you've missed the last collection,' I shouted towards the circular craft, adding: 'We don't see many flying saucers around here.' There was no reaction so I yelled: 'Hey, you there in the UFO!' A panel in the craft slid open and a decidedly oddlooking creature emerged. 'Please don't call my spaceship a UFO,' boomed a deep voice. 'You've already ascertained that this is a flying saucer, therefore it can no longer be described as unidentified.' 'Pedantic,' I shrugged but I was getting quite excited as the creature beckoned me to

enter by crooking a long, gnarled finger in my direction. I quickly took in that he had only two fingers on each hand -- which might have been normal for his species or maybe the creature was merely accident prone. I walked up a ramp into the craft's interior and took a quick shufty at the decor. 'Hmm, nice,' I said. The alien nodded in appreciation at my complimentary remark, studied my facial features (which were nothing like his) for a while and then asked: 'Are all earthlings as strange of countenance as you?' 'Who are you calling ugly, pal!' I retorted. But my anger turned to concern as I realised my current situation could be fraught with danger. 'You have to let me out now!' I cried.

'What on earth is your problem?' asked the extra-terrestrial visitor. 'And I mean that literally.' I pointed with a trembling digit at the fascia on the flight deck. 'You haven't got a payand-display parking ticket. And I'm already in enough trouble with the traffic wardens around here.' The creature raised a hand to his green scaly head and scratched it with both fingers. 'I haven't a clue as what you're talking about. You're going to have to explain this weird earth stuff to the others.' 'Others? What others?' I asked. 'Just how many of you lot are aboard?' 'Four,' replied the alien, counting twice on two fingers. There's the commander who is in overall command of the ship . . .'

'You mean like Captain Kirk?' The creature guffawed. 'Strictly amateur night. In fact, Star Trek is our top comedy show back on our planet. 'I mean that "Beam me up, Scotty" business. it's the most far-fetched thing we've ever seen. It just cannot be done in reality.' 'Well, how do you rate Dr Who?' I asked. 'Doctor who?' queried the alien, obviously puzzled. 'Anyway,' the creature went on, 'Our crew also comprises a pilot with 100 billion light years' flying time under his belt and a navigator who has won medals for plotting intergalactic routes avoiding the cones.' 'And what do you?' I asked. 'Oh, I'm just the meeter and greeter and I make the coffee, too. But I've decided I could

do a lot better so I'm currently writing applications for other jobs. What time did you say the postbox here gets emptied?' Suddenly, the alien sneezed. 'I've definitely got a cold coming on. But there you go. A fortnight near the sun and then it's off to a colder galaxy. Do you wonder.' I looked at my watch. 'Er, I must fly. And I'd advise you to do the same. There's one traffic warden who willingly works nights for free because he's such a jobsworth.' I started to walk off the spacecraft. 'Halt!' the alien commanded. A hatch slid open and another creature popped his strange head through. 'You called?' he asked. The first alien shook his head. 'I shouted to the earthling to halt.' 'Apologies,' said the second

creature. 'I thought you said Walt.' 'Why not come with us, earth person,' implored my alien friend. 'I've taken a shine to you.' 'I really must go home,' I said. 'Mrs S will have my supper on the table and she'll go crazy if it goes cold -- or even go warm if she's made a salad.' 'Can't you phone home,' suggested the creature. 'We'll be away only for a couple of hundred years and I promise to drop you off afterwards.' 'Two centuries?' I mused. 'Hmm, well I do have commitments to The Courier but I can always ask Mrs S if she'd like to go with you instead. She does deserve a break.' Anyway, enough of this, dear reader. Let me tell you about that strange dream I had . .

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

The best and most entertaining of all the TV talent/reality shows (sorry Strictly fans) is back and it’s as good as always in the shape of Britain’s Got Talent. Last Saturday’s opener on ITV brought us the cutest of all dog acts; a terrific girl singer; an excellent impressionist; an enjoyable choir and orchestra; and to top it all, an amazing swords swallower from Moldova. I had to laugh when the caption “Do Not Try This At Home” appeared as if Uncle Albert drunk to the nines with beer was going to give it a go with his bread knife! It was just top Saturday night stuff, and yes we got all the cliches from the judges, etc, etc. But it doesn’t matter, as BGT destroyed The Voice’s final show for the BBC, before ironically it switches to ITV next year. Singing shows appear to have had their day, so I wonder if ITV have bought themselves a dud? You can bet a lot of money though that BGT will be around for many years to come (along with Strictly Come Dancing) because there’s something fresh about every season, and

The Buzzers Are Back

one thing that links both shows is that they are not mean-spirited. We don’t see enough of Adrian Lester and Sophie Okenedo on television as they do a lot of stagework, but it’s great to see them paired up as husband and wife in an excellent yarn called Undercover on BBC1 which is done a good job in filling the Sunday night War and Peace/The Night Manager gap. We have a twenty year backstory of

Lester being an undercover copper who ends up marrying Okenedo after a series of London protests, and now Lester’s bosses are calling in a chip to stop his misses (unaware of hubbie’s past) becoming the Director of Public Prosecutions. It’s another Beeb drama cracker, and clearly ITV are rattled, so they’ve struck. They’ve pinched the BBC’s head of drama, Polly Hill, to sort their mess out, with ITV now run by experienced ex-

BBC and Channel Four executive, Kevin Lygo. He’s put together a really good creative team, but the problem is that ITV’s lacklustre schedule will not see any major changes for at least 18 months, such is the lag time on commissioning major projects and them hitting the screen. Good moves though from a channel that ought to be one of the very best on UK, but simply isn’t at the moment. I love shows about time

travel and back in the sixties I was transfixed by the US show, The Time Tunnel, where like with Lost in Space, our heroes never returned safely and we didn’t know what happened to them due to US network cancellations! Now we have an eight-part mini series on FOX UK that takes you back to the start of that decade (time flies!) called 11:22:63, which is engrained on every American’s mind as the day that JFK was assassinated

in Dallas. The drama is based on Stephen King’s book and has King himself and JJ Abrams on the production credits, and I loved the opener. James Franco is perfect as an English teacher who is a friend of a dying diner owner called Al who just happens to have a portal in his building that takes him back to 1960. Al’s mission is to try and stop Kennedy’s murder but the kicker is that when you come back to 2016, you are only two minutes ahead of when you left, as opposed to spending your sixties existance in real time. Also, if you return, you have to start from scratch in 1960! Shades of Marty McFly, Doctor Who, and Star Trek abound featuring altering timelines and all kinds of quandries for Franco’s character. The sixties settings look great and I think this is as good as anything that Franco has done on any size of screen. It pulls off the great trick of making you believe that all of this hokum is totally plausible, and with just eight episodes, there’s little waffle time in my US TV pleasant surprise of the year.

Jim Carter: Lonnie Donegan and Me Sunday - ITV “I first saw Lonnie Donegan light up the stage when I was 11 years old and ever since then I thought he was the greatest. And I’m going to show you why Lonnie Donegan, who was once the most famous man in Britain, was so exciting, so influential, so loved and then so forgotten.” - Jim Carter, actor and Lonnie Donegan fan Downton Abbey’s Mr Carson may have hung up his butler’s jacket for good, but even as his final scenes were being shot, actor Jim Carter was already at work on a remarkable and longcherished film about the King of Skiffle, 1950s singer Lonnie Donegan. In Jim Carter: Lonnie Donegan and Me, the actor shares his life-long passion, which began aged 11 when he saw Lonnie play at a seaside variety theatre on a summer holiday, as he tells the story of his profound impact on pop culture and a generation of British musicians who went on to conquer the world. This one-hour film features Jim’s lively encounters with some of those seminal rockers who were inspired to take up music by Lonnie Donegan. Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Roger Daltrey and Sir Van Morrison tell Jim how, initially using tea chests, washboards and even home made guitars, they were inspired by Lonnie Donegan to make the music which would set them on the path to superstardom. Later fans such as Jack White of The White Stripes also reflect on the importance of Lonnie as a figure in the development of popular music. Jim traces Lonnie’s rollercoaster life and career, meeting his fans and family, including his first wife and his widow, as well as his son. He goes on a pilgrimage back to the Regal Theatre in Great Yarmouth where he first saw Lonnie all those years ago. He says: “Oh dear, this is it - it’s been knocked down. Unfortunately it’s now a popular brand of modern coffee shop. But this was the site where I saw Lonnie Donegan, 1960, Puttin’ On The Donegan. Hard to believe really, looking at this guy, who looks like a wide boy selling ties on a market, hard to believe he made such incredible music. Music that you’d have thought came out of the

Deep South of America, he made and played and as an 11-year-old I heard in Great Yarmouth and I thought, ‘This is amazing.’” Yet the actor wasn’t the only one enraptured by Lonnie’s visceral performances. Roger Daltrey says: “He was fearless... And I just loved it, the freedom of it. It was primal, there was something else in the voice and it really broke through something big inside me.” Though now almost forgotten or remembered for novelty hits like My Old Man’s a Dustman, Lonnie was once the most famous singer in Britain. His high energy and self-styled skiffle music helped the nation to shake off the post-war greyness of the 1950s and jumpstart the teenage music explosion of the 1960s. But when Jim told his now-wife Imelda Staunton he was going to take her to a Lonnie concert, she reacted badly. She says: “I think actually when you'd mentioned before that you liked Lonnie Donegan, I thought, ‘Is this the right man for me?’ But I think what impressed me and moved me was this man who sang with such passion, which I didn't expect from the funny chirpy guy that those funny songs implied that he was.” Jim traces Lonnie’s early life and his roots as a performer, starting out as plain old Tony Donegan. In 1949, on compulsory National Service, Lonnie got to know some visiting American GIs – along with their record collections of US blues and folk. Lonnie’s breakthrough song was a cover of US bluesman Leadbelly’s Rock Island Line, which went top ten on both sides of the Atlantic, shifting more than 1.5 million copies. Van Morrison explains its impact: “My father actually brought it home with him one day, he brought us a 78, put this on and a bolt of lightning, I can’t explain it - it was just like something changed then, at that point as soon as I heard

it, something changed.” Exploding onto the scene just a few months before Elvis Presley’s debut, Lonnie was the uncontested King of Skiffle, catching the wave of the new era of the teenager. Paul McCartney says: “You wanted to be in a skiffle group and Lonnie was the megastar. It was like, ‘I wanna be like that!’” Homegrown star Lonnie provided the spark for teenagers not just to play music, but to make and use their own instruments like tea-chest basses and washboards in an era when guitars and drums were comparatively expensive. Roger Daltrey says: “When I heard Elvis and I saw Elvis I thought that looks like the ultimate job for any bloke. But when I heard Lonnie and y'know seeing Lonnie play that acoustic guitar, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll never be able to afford to get a guitar so I’ll have to make one.” Without Lonnie there might have been no Beatles, and the film exclusively airs the earliest known recording of 16-year-old John Lennon, singing one of Lonnie’s hits with his skiffle group The Quarrymen in 1957. The skiffle music Lonnie performed was a real driver for Britain’s young musicians, says Ringo Starr: “It was so simple and so popular that I believe half of Liverpool started playing.” As the 1950s wore on Britain was becoming wealthier and brighter, and Lonnie was now earning enough to partake of this new modern living, building a new family home in suburban Essex. His first wife Maureen Jackson gives an insight into their home life. She says: “I used to get undressed ready for bed, have the meal all ready, and snooze on the sofa with an alarm clock. One of his favourites was lamb stew and dumplings followed by apple pie and custard, but at three in the morning.” But the ‘60s were coming and the King of Skiffle’s fans

were going to challenge him for his crown. So he released a novelty song My Old Man’s A Dustman. Jack White explains why: “The Beatles had novelty songs, Bob Dylan had novelty songs, Chuck Berry’s only hit in England was My Ding-A-Ling, of all of his songs and brilliant lyrics. That’s just a doorway for a 12-year-old kid instead of a 16-year-old kid to get into Lonnie Donegan.” Lonnie had opened the door and a whole generation rushed through, among them future rock stars. Paul McCartney says: “After Lonnie, rock’n’roll happened. Buddy Holly, Elvis, all the rock’n’roll stars and we emulated that. I think with us, it was that we kept developing.” The programme unearths archive footage from Lonnie’s hit primetime 1960s TV show, Puttin’ on the Donegan, seen again for the first time since it aired. Despite his TV appearances and branching out into cabaret, Lonnie’s star was fading. He divorced his first wife, and his restless nature, coupled with his almost manic performance style, were starting to take a toll on his health. He suffered several heart attacks and as the decades rolled by, felt all but forgotten. But then one of the young rock stars he originally inspired, Van Morrison, decided it was time to repay the debt and put Lonnie back in the limelight where he belonged, recording an album with him and taking him on tour. He says: “The people that wanted to knock him, it became easy for them to write him off, ‘Oh, he was just a novelty act so let’s ignore that.’ But the breadth of work was amazing and he was a great blues singer.” The film airs amidst 60th anniversary celebrations of Lonnie’s breakthrough hit Rock Island Line - the first of 16 Top 10s and the record that started it all. Jim says: “I love his music, it gets my heart racing. I think some artists are given an infinite amount of talent, which they’ll happily explore interestingly for the rest of their lives but the majority are probably given a finite pool of talent to work from. And I think Lonnie’s talent was skiffle music. He was the King of Skiffle, he changed music in this country – and for that, Lonnie, I thank you.”

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show Saturday - BBC One Michael McIntyre’s brand new entertainment show, recorded in front of a live audience at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, jampacked with celebrity guests and musical performances, begins a six-part series on Saturday night on BBC One.

This week includes a musical performance from Tinie Tempah, stand up from Michael, and a jaw-dropping performance from the Peres Brothers group. Also in the show, Michael plays his favourite game, Celebrity Send To All, which sees him going through former Spice

Girl Geri Horner’s mobile phone and sending a text to her phone book. Also, a member of the audience will be in for a very special surprise - she has come to the theatre to enjoy a fun night out with a friend only to find that all havoc is breaking loose at home in her

absence. At the end of the show, one unsuspecting member of the public will get the shock of their lives and have their dreams come true when they sing a very special duet with Michael Ball in Unexpected Star. It is a moment not to be missed.

The Food Detectives

Friday - BBC Two In a new series for BBC Two, Professor Alice Roberts, chef Tom Kerridge and journalist Sean Fletcher set out to improve the cooking habits, bank balances and health of audiences by dishing up the plain facts about the food we eat. In the first episode of The Food Detectives on Friday, BBC Two, Professor Alice Roberts reveals the shocking statistic that three-quarters of consumers could be taking home a food poisoning bug following their visit to the supermarket. Exploring the presence of campylobacter in chicken - the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK - Alice looks at methods of prevention for a health food scandal that few of us may even have heard about until now. Tom Kerridge has been a professional chef for over 20 years and in that time he’s learned many tips and tricks to deliver food that consistently tastes great. He’s keen to share these trade secrets so we can all

improve our cooking. Each week, he will travel around the country turning kitchen fails into kitchen successes. This week he is in Poole to help a viewer who is calling on his expertise to cook the perfect piece of fish. Offering professional trade secrets that we can all use, Tom shares his secret for cooking perfect pork. With masses of products available at every supermarket, journalist Sean Fletcher pulls apart the ingredients in the different price ranges of own-brand products to find out what we are really paying for – revealing when it’s worth spending money on premium and when we can get away with a money-saving basic. With the help of food scientists he meets along the way, Sean’s first stop is the pasta aisle. Pasta has only one main ingredient - yet premium pasta can be over £1 more for expensive brands over budget brands. With this in mind Sean looks at just what we are paying for.

Fierce

Tuesday - ITV “The last thing I want to do is demonise animals. It’s about making them intriguing and fascinating. It’s about dealing with how predators interact with their prey. It’s about how the animals interact with each other in nature.” Steve Backshall Fierce sees BAFTA Award winning TV naturalist Steve Backshall seeking out the world’s most fierce animals. The series takes Steve on six epic adventures to Guyana, Mexico, Namibia, Indonesia, Australia and South Africa, where along the way he encounters the world’s most venomous snake, the Inland Taipan, gets perilously close to the largest carnivorous reptile in South America, the giant Black Caiman, attempts to track down the endangered Giant River Otter and stakes out the feisty and fearless Honey Badger.

As well as going eye-toeye with fierce American Crocodiles, swimming amongst Bull Sharks and narrowly escaping the jaws of the extraordinary Komodo Dragon, Steve also meets the people living cheek by jowl with these dangerous predators and those who have miraculously survived being attacked by them. In episode one, broadcast on Tuesday evening on ITV, Steve travels to the wild islands of Indonesia. He has a close call being chased by the world’s largest lizard, the legendary komodo dragon, rescues a three metre venomous king cobra, goes diving in the treacherous seas that surround the islands getting hands on with the world’s most poisonous fish and he has his first ever encounter with an unusual predator, the aptly named flamboyant cuttlefish.

The film follows the build of their first £20million, 40-metre vessel, which has been ordered by an exacting customer who’s taken advantage of the firm’s `made-to-measure’ service. Meanwhile, the London-based sales team works to fill orders during the allimportant boat show season.

In Coronation Street, Izzy asks Gary if he’ll score her some more dope. When Dane calls at the gym for Gary, Sharif is deeply suspicious and phones the police. As Dane leaves the gym, he bumps into Gary and hands him some cannabis

just as the police arrive. Soon afterwards, Anna calls at Izzy’s flat. Suddenly Izzy panics, thinking Jake is playing with her dope tin. Anna is furious to realise Izzy is still taking drugs whilst in charge of her son. Having found nothing on Dane, the police let him go - but they find a quarter of cannabis on Gary and arrest him. As Izzy and Anna row over her drug use, they’re stopped by a phone call from Erica informing them of Gary’s arrest. Anna turns on Izzy, wanting to know if she’s going to tell the police what this is really all about. In the second episode,

1989: Football fans crushed at Hillsborough Izzy heads off and is clearly a woman on a mission. Erica then ushers Anna, Sharif, Dev and Zeedan into the gym. Sharif admits that he called the police on Gary and Anna puts Sharif straight, explaining the cannabis was for Izzy. When Erica confirms that Izzy uses weed for pain relief, Dev is surprised to learn of Erica’s involvement. Sharif remains adamant that he did the right thing as Gary was acting illegally. Izzy hands herself in at the police station and explains that Gary was buying the drugs for her. Gary is released but charged with supplying drugs. When

'Nan who loves a naan'

Dessert

The Best Apple Cumble Ever Ingredients

Serves 6 4 apples - peeled, cored and sliced 100g (3 oz) dark brown soft sugar 125g (4 oz) plain flour 150g (5 oz) caster sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg, beaten 2 tablespoons butter, melted.

Directions Prep:15min , Cook:35min › Ready in:50min Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas mark 5. In a 23cm (9 in) square baking dish, mix sliced apples with brown sugar. In a large bowl, mix together flour, caster sugar, cinnamon and salt. In a small bowl, beat together egg and melted butter. Stir into flour mixture. Spread evenly over apples. Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until topping is golden and crisp.

A great - grandmother dubbed the 'nan who loves naan' has attributed her love of spicy Indian food to helping her reach 103. Margaret Phillips, from Dundee, puts her good health and long life down to her favourite cuisine - and has been named Curry Lover of the Year.

She developed a love for the food during two spells living in India as a young woman and would regularly hold curry suppers for friends and family. The centenarian will celebrate taking the title at this year's Scottish Curry Awards by sharing her favourite dish - prawn

madras - with fellow residents at Bupa's Balcarres Care Home. Her daughter Jacqueline said: "The whole family is thrilled that she has won. "It was a huge surprise when she was initially nominated, but we honestly cannot think of anyone more deserving of the title. "We would like to thank everyone who voted for her. It's a very special achievement and the whole family is incredibly proud of her." Mrs Philips, who turns 104 in the summer, lived in India with husband William between 1937 and 1940, and later for 11 years from 1946 when she remarried following the death of William.

Global vanilla shortage may cause ice cream prices to soar The beloved ’99 cone may not taste so sweet this summer as the soaring price of vanilla threatens to push up the price of ice cream. Production problems in Madagascar, the world’s largest vanilla producer, have caused prices to surge 120 per cent year on year, meaning vanilla beans priced at around £14 a kilogram five years ago are now in excess of £155 a kilogram. Poor flowering towards the end of 2014 has affected last year’s vanilla production causing it to decline. “Vanilla prices have been increasing since 2012 and with low production forecasts in 2015, farmers harvested some of their crop permanently which reduced quality,” said Mintec. “The situation has been exacerbated by importers who stocked up early in anticipation of price hikes, further reducing supplies in the market.”

Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world after saffron due to its expensive and labour-intensive cultivation. Vanilla vines, part of the Orchid family, are only sustainable within a 20-degree ban around the equator and must go through a threeyear maturation period before they are able to bear fruit. Early anticipation of price hikes has led local growers to harvest their vanilla crop too early, leading to a less intense flavour. The high-value crop is also a target for thieves. “Premature harvesting is the first factor to have a direct impact on the quality of vanilla arriving on the market,” say French-based vanilla suppliers, Eurovanille. This combination of high prices and declining quality may lead food and beverage manufacturers to seek out alternatives to natural vanilla flavours

Joe Wicks on fitness and fame after Instagram made him a star The man behind the Lean in 15 diet insists he doesn't feel like a celebrity

He looks like Aidan Turner in Poldark, sounds like Russell Brand and is raising the pulses of millions of women across the UK. And this is before you even factor in all the burpees and lunges in his fitness workouts. Meet Joe Wicks. Unless you’ve been living in a (wifi-free) cave for the past 12 months, you’ll know the

cherub-haired, 30-year-old personal trainer – aka The Body Coach – has been everywhere. With his ‘Lean in 15’ online diet and fitness plans, as well as his best-selling cookbooks, Joe is making pounds faster than his online followers lose them. Which is pretty fast. Unlike so many diet regimes,

Instead, his signature 90-day “Shape, Shift and Sustain” plan encourages people to eat more – but of the right foods. “Oh, and you’ve gotta chill out on the booze ,” he laughs. Of course there’s a caveat. But the transformations are indisputable. He says: “I’m passionate

about what I do, and getting people coming up to me in the street or at book signings and telling me I’ve changed their lives – that’s what motivates me. “But after doing my plan and getting fit and healthy, she got pregnant naturally. That was amazing and shows what we are doing is literally transforming lives.

“I’m getting recognised every week now, and people will come up to me in Sainsbury’s and shout, ‘Oi! Lean in 15!’ or one of my catchphrases ‘Guilty!’ which still feels weird, but I love it all. “I don’t feel like a celebrity at all and my friends think it’s hilarious that I’ve suddenly become a TV chef.” Read more: Couple lost 15 stone between them after ditching just one habit As well as demonstrating recipes online in short, sharp, snappy 15-second videos – the premise being that all his healthy meals can be cooked in 15 minutes or less – Joe has become famed for his catchphrases, such as ‘Guilty!’, used to describe something particularly tasty. Or naughty. (Unlike many health fascists, Joe is happy to share the odd pic of himself eating a brownie, or attacking the breakfast buffet with gusto on holiday.) His liberal use of the term ‘midget trees’ – tenderstem broccoli – has seen sales of the green stuff rocket by 25% in supermarkets across the UK. The ‘Delia effect’ is now the ‘Joe Wicks effect’. Not surprisingly, while we lose the lbs, he is raking in the pounds. After recently

signing a six-figure deal with publishers HarperCollins, he has also been signed up to front a new Channel 4 show. And this week he launches in the US. Australia and the Far East will follow. In just three years, Joe has gone from penniless pub worker to Instagram millionaire. He says: “It’s incredible how my life has completely changed. “A couple of years ago I had about four followers and was putting out all this free content for so long, putting myself out there to be laughed at and criticised. I never realised you could monetise Instagram. I just wanted to help people. “But I’ve always had this vision that I was going to create a global business. I truly believed it was going to happen even when no one else did. “Our turnover now is over a million pounds a month and when you say it out loud like that, it sounds ridiculous. “But I have 500 people signing up to my plan every day, and the business keeps growing and growing. I think the reason I’ve become successful is because I never set out to make money.

Carbonara wars: why Italy is right to be mad about a French travesty A Roman speciality favoured by Apennine charcoal burners

Nothing is so guaranteed to make the Italian blood boil like a well-salted pan of pasta as a foreigner fiddling with their food. So a French website’s recipe for a onepot carbonara (with farfalle, no less) was always going to go down badly in Italy where, inevitably, it has been met with outrage. To be fair to the Italians, they have a point: carbonara, a Roman speciality, is claimed to have been the traditional favourite of Apennine charcoal burners, or carbonai, who needed a simple dish that could be prepared quickly over a

campfire. If those guys could take two pans up the mountains on their grimy backs, then their Gallic neighbours, never people to shy away from overcomplicating things in the kitchen department, should surely be able to wash a couple up in the comfort of their Parisian apartments. More importantly, the offending video (which has since, and wisely, been taken down) is a travesty against taste as well as tradition. Real carbonara relies on gently rendering the salty fat from pancetta, grating the cheese into

fluffy clouds, infusing olive oil with a little garlic – and then swiftly, decisively, tossing these with hot pasta and raw egg until the whole thing comes together in a rich savoury sauce. It’s pure kitchen alchemy. Boiling action-man bow ties in the same pan as bacon, onion and a bit of water is never going to produce anything half as glorious – and as for adding creme fraiche and few mean shavings of parmesan, well, I can’t put it better than one Italian Facebook user: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Here’s a version I hope they would approve of: Ingredients: 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 garlic clove, sliced, 75g pancetta, cubed, 250g dried spaghetti, 2 eggs and 1 egg yolk, 25g pecorino romano, finely grated, 25g parmesan, finely grated, Freshly ground black pepper, Nutmeg, optional 1. Put two bowls into a low oven to keep warm, or boil a kettle and half fill them with hot water. Heat the oil in a large frying pan

on a medium heat, then add the garlic and cook until well coloured, then remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and discard. Add the pancetta and cook until translucent and golden, but not brown around the edges. 2. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling, salted water until al dente. In a bowl, beat together the eggs and the extra yolk and then stir in the the pecorino and most of the parmesan, reserving a little for garnish. Grind in plenty of black pepper. 3. Scoop out a small cupful of the pasta cooking water, and then drain the pasta well. Tip it into the frying pan and toss to coat with the pancetta fat. 4. Take the pan off the heat and tip in the egg mixture, tossing the pasta furiously, then, once it has begun to thicken, add a dash of cooking water to loosen the sauce. Toss again, and divide between the warm bowls, finishing off with a grating of nutmeg and a little more parmesan. Eat immediately.

Malt loaf has Proustian qualities Out of nowhere, I got a fancy to rekindle our old friendship. I longed for a thin slice of buttered malt loaf, the slightly tacky feel on my fingers, that smell of dried fruit and tea I once held so dear. I wasn’t sure it would be quite the same stripped of the traditional waxed paper wrapper of the commercial brands, like a Kit Kat without the silver foil. Yet one sniff of the baked loaf – think fruitcake meets Ovaltine – and all the good stuff came floating back. Malt loaf is something of a safe harbour, a cloud of raisin and malt-scented nostalgia, in a complicated world. It tastes of home, of ticking clocks and quality time spent with your gran. At least it does for me. The method is straightforward, a recipe anyone can attempt, but it is worth noting that the texture of the uncooked cake mixture is akin to that of raw gingercake. In other words a soft batter you can almost pour into the tin, rather than stiff and creamy like the texture of uncooked fruitcake. Sometimes you have to trust a recipe rather than follow your own intuition. Malt loaf is something of a keeper. Wrapped in foil and stored in a cool corner of the kitchen it will not only keep for a few days but will be better for it. Like Christmas cake, this fruit-packed loaf matures benignly. It is a good idea to brush the outside of the freshly baked bread with some of the malt extract directly from the jar. The sweet, mahogany-brown goo will be partially absorbed by the loaf, giving the characteristic tackiness that should come part and parcel of such a recipe. A recipe that takes you back to simpler, gentler times. Sometimes you

can have too much excitement. Malt loaf Malt extract is still around, but you may have to go to a large supermarket or wholefood store for it. If the surface of the loaf browns more quickly than you’d like it to, cover with foil for the last few minutes of cooking. You will need a little more malt extract at the end for brushing over the surface of the warm cake, to create a sticky crust. malt extract 150g, light muscovado sugar 100g, black treacle 2 tbsp, plain flour 250g, baking powder 1 tsp, salt a pinch, prunes 100g, stoned weight , eggs 2, black tea 125ml, sultanas or raisins 100g To finish: A little more malt extract You will also need a deep, rectangular cake tin measuring 20x9cm (measured on the base) lined with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 160C/gas mark 3. Put the malt extract, muscovado sugar and black treacle in a small saucepan and warm, without stirring, over a moderate heat until the sugar has dissolved. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt to combine thoroughly in a large mixing bowl. Chop the prunes into small pieces. Pour the warm malt and sugar mixture into the flour, together with the tea. Break the eggs into a small bowl, beat lightly with a fork and fold into the batter with the chopped prunes and the sultanas. Scoop the mixture – it is quite soft – into the lined cake tin and gently smooth the surface Bake for 1 hour until lightly springy, then remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin. While the cake cools, brush the surface with a little more malt extract.

Eye In The Sky Review

DIRECTOR Gavin Hood GENRE Drama SYNOPSIS Stars Helen Mirren as Colonel Katherine Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Through remote surveillance and on-the-ground intel, Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from "capture" to "kill." But as American pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) is about to engage, a nine-year old girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute, reaching the highest levels of US and British government, over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare. RELEASE DATE 1 April 2016 DURATION 90 mins Drone warfare, top of the political hot-potato pile after

last week’s British attack in Syria, is one of the more unignorable debating points of our age – one with such urgent, palpable, life-or-death application that cinema is beginning to wake up to it. Gavin Hood’s air-strike thriller Eye in the Sky isn’t the first film to tackle this – there was April's Ethan Hawke-starrer Good Kill, which focused more on the psychological fallout of point-and-click soldiering than the impact on the ground. Lasering in with its sights, Eye in the Sky gives us a single theatre of war – a shantytown in Nairobi, where suicide bombers may be ensconced – and runs the numbers. Guy Hibbert’s punchy, almost realtime script begins with British army colonel Katharine Powell (a camo-clad Helen Mirren, giving us a stern military variation on Jane Tennison) calling the shots. A dissident she’s been tracking

for years is pinpointed to this one hut, which is uncomfortably close to various innocent civilians going about their day. Captain Phillips’s Barkhad Abdi plays a Somali anti-terror agent on the ground, tasked with getting close enough to send in a spy camera, attached to a remotecontrolled “insect drone”, and thereby allowing his colleagues to have a literal fly on the wall. The critical moment nears. And, just then, a young Kenyan girl sets out her bread stall within feet of the blast radius. Beyond these sideshows and plenty of shrewd work from the cast, the film’s serious intent is honourable, and the construction pretty solid. In homing in on the fate of a single innocent child, it wants to humanise a debate which could easily get lost in statistics and probabilities. It makes us well aware of this

on screen: the risk assessments which keep being crunched and recrunched to boost the legal case involve point-and-click fudging of the blast radius to make “the numbers work”, when the only number that counts is how many loaves of bread this girl still has left to shift before she gets out of the danger-zone. If there’s a downside, it’s that you come away feeling everything has been tidily debated, diligently turned over, to the point where there’s not a great deal left to think about. The truth is, drone warfare would be a good deal less troubling if we could believe this level of weepy agonising was involved among the personnel conducting it. Eye in the Sky is a tick-tock suspense exercise as well as a neat little ethical echo chamber, a plea for reason in a world exploding too vigorously to give it the time of day.

Friends Of

Hello everybody from TKO Teddy and I have to say that I’m really enjoying my freedom after being locked up a fortnight ago and held for ransom in aid of Samaritans in Spain. The annoying thing is that I still don’t know who the blighter was that held me, so I’m just hoping that he doesn’t strike again! Spring is very much in the air at my bear cave and I thought that I’d some spring cleaning and also get some new gear for my abode. I decided to go to Los Montesinos and drop in at Stewart’s Domestic Appliances Repairs And Sales, who have a brand new shop in the corner of the square. I got myself a nice new

microwave as I don’t like sweating over a hot stove, and the nice friendly team at the shop told me that they don’t have a “call out charge” for coming to have a look over any of your broken gear like cookers, washers, fridges, ovens and hobs! How good is all that and they can arrange to deliver and install a new appliance on the same day if you need a replacement. Thanks to everybody at their shop for a warm welcome, and I’ll certainly be back there in the future! If you want me to pay you a visit, contact me via Facebook and my special page, TKO Teddy or send me an e-mail, tkoteddy@tko.media

Being sleep deprived does the same to your brain as being drunk Contact@medb.es

Website: www.medb.es

A lack of sleep can cause poor concentration, memory and poor judgement

If you find yourself burning the candle at both ends and only catching a few hours of sleep every night, a new

study has revealed it could have the same brain-impairing effects on you as feeling drunk. The study, conducted

by Oxford University and the Royal Society for Public Health, found that after 17 hours without sleep, our lack of alertness is similar to the effects of a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 per cent. And after 24 hours of not sleeping, it equates to the equivalent of 0.1 per cent more than the legal limit to drive. "Sleep deprivation impacts in serious ways," says sleep expert Lisa Artis, from The Sleep Council. "Tiredness can impact on driving ability, reaction times and judgement and causes poor concentration, thinking, memory, increased irritability and hostility - all similar side effects to being drunk. Sleeplessness leads to hallucinations and sensory dysfunction. Noises become louder, vision is

affected and sufferers start to isolate themselves. Sleep deprivation can lead to mental meltdown." The Sleep Council also recently conducted its own survey, which found that a third of Britons get by on just five to six hours sleep a night, and that mental and physical problems become more pronounced in those sleeping for less than six hours. They also found that not sleeping enough may ramp up the ‘fight or flight’ response to stress, releasing hormones that speed up heart rate and raise blood pressure. The problem doesn't just lie there: do you tend to wake up in the middle of the night and have a broken sleep even if you're in bed for more than six hours? That can be just as bad, adds Artis. "Broken or

interrupted sleep can leave you feeling as sleep deprived as if you’d just had four hours rest a night because you are disrupting the natural sleep rhythm. It may mean you do not reach the most restorative, deeper phases of sleep." So how can we get a better night's sleep? Here's a few pointers: Get a good bed Many people underestimate the importance of a comfortable supportive bed, but research has found that swapping an uncomfortable bed for a new one can result in nearly an extra hour of sleep a night. Invest in blackout blinds Or they can be heavy curtains - anything to keep your room dark. Light suppresses melatonin (the sleepy hormone) that relaxes your body

helping you to drift off. If noise wakes you consider purchasing in earplugs. Don't rely on apps too much There are also a variety of apps and trackers that claim to help improve sleep – but just be careful that they don’t interfere with your sleep and that you don’t rely too heavily on them. They don’t always give a true indication of sleep patterns and may cause unnecessary worry and concern. Avoid screen time Don't watch television or look at a laptop at least an hour before bed, as it definitely can affect your sleep. Find alternative ways of relaxing like warm baths with calming scents, quiet soothing music, reading, gentle stretching and yoga.

Zika virus: its effects, how it is spread Aedes aegypti is one of two species of mosquito known to carry the virus How do you get Zika? Zika is spread by the Aedes genus of mosquito, which transmits the disease when it bites a person infected with Zika, then bites another host. The two most common mosquitoes to transmit the disease are the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species. Both are invasive species with worldwide distributions, including in the American south and southwest. It is believed that Aedes albopictus, also called the Asian tiger mosquito, was imported to the United States in the mid1980s in used tyres from Asia. What are Zika’s symptoms? Usually, Zika’s symptoms include fever, red and bumpy rash, joint pain and pink eye. Hospitalization rates are low and the World

Health Organization said no deaths have been reported from Zika. However, a “high rate” of patients with Zika have no

symptoms at all, according to the WHO. This is concerning to virologists, who believe that Zika could easily establish a

foothold in the southern United States and other areas with tropical climates because people may not know they are infected.

High Blood Pressure medications and Erectile Dysfunction A high proportion of people taking high blood pressure medications will develop erectile dysfunction a few years after starting medications, according to clinical studies. What isn’t well known is that erectile dysfunction (ED) is a disease of the arteries, just like heart attack and strokes. Penile erections and Blood pressure are controlled in a similar manner with the contraction and relaxation of arteries to control blood flow. Before an erection can occur, blood must flow from

the arteries of the penis into spongy spaces inside the penis to engorge them with blood and cause an erection. Any disruption to the process will cause erectile dysfunction and the commonest cause of a disruption is damage to the walls of the arteries that reduces the production of Nitric Oxide (NO), a chemical required for penile erections. Also required for successful erections are enzymes necessary to produce (NO) and those that

stop erections from coming to a premature end. Drugs that claim to help ED such as Viagra work by enhancing enzymes that maintain erections. Drugs used to treat high blood pressure will only reduce blood pressure without correcting the cause of high blood pressure usually due to damage to arteries. Furthermore, such drugs may even worsen the damage to arteries and contribute to erectile dysfunction. If you must take blood

pressure medications, there are steps you can take to reduce the damage to your arteries. Omega-3 Oil from foods like salmon and mackerel or taken as supplements reduces inflammation of the arteries. Fresh fruits and veggies are rich in antioxidants and help reduce inflammation and damage to arteries. At MedB clinic, we have successfully treated erectile dysfunction using a combination of agents to repair damaged arteries and to sustain erections.

Should I pay to vaccinate my child against meningitis B? Meningitis B is a rare disease, but it could kill your child within hours – the fatality rate is 5-10%. There is a new vaccine, but the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) says it should be restricted to children under a year old. But parents dread meningitis B, and after media reports of the death of two-year-old Faye Burdett in February, more than 820,000 people signed a petition asking the government to widen the vaccination

programme. In the meantime, if you can afford it, should you pay for your child to be vaccinated? The solution Meningitis is inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord that can lead to blood poisoning. Meningococcal group B is now the commonest bacterial type (many others are dealt with in vaccination programmes), and infection risk peaks at around six months of age. It continues to infect

children up until they are five years old, with another spike among teenagers – although anyone can catch it. The bacteria are carried in the noses of healthy people – teenagers are the main carriers. Meningitis Now suggests that vaccinating teenagers could reduce this risk. The vaccine –Bexsero, made by Novartis – has so far been given to around 1 million people. It is considered safe, although it can cause a fever – paracetamol is recommend-

ed at the two- and four-month jabs. The programme should prevent 26.3% of cases in the first five years, assuming the vaccine covers 88% of strains and is 95% effective against the disease. However, there is a global shortage of the vaccine, likely to last until summer 2016. The cost of having jabs privately varies from around £90 to £130 per jab, and three are needed. Natasha S Crowcroft, chief of applied immunisation research at the University of

Ontario, says it is early days for this vaccine. Protection seems to wane, as trials show that some of the components do not last as long as was hoped, and there is no good evidence for it improving herd immunity – whereby those not vaccinated are protected. There are also other vaccines emerging that might be better. If the JCVI approach works, and this vaccine is as good as the current one for Meningitis C (which is offered

to all children) then herd immunity for older children will take off. It is also uncomfortable to think that some parents can afford a vaccine and others not. And there’s also the reality of the risk of meningitis B – our children are more likely to die from other causes, some also preventable. But I still have an old pack of Tamiflu I bought irrationally when swine flu was scary, so I’m not preaching to any other parents.

BMW X1: It shows that it is an X model through and through Latest BMW X1 rivals the Audi Q3, with a striking new design and more equipment than before The BMW X1 first went on sale in 2009, and was the third addition t o

BMW’s X-car range. However, unlike the bulkier X3 and X5, the X1 was based on the smaller 3 Series Touring, and due to its lowslung driving position and hatchback-like proportions,

more

never truly won the hearts of UK buyers. This new model is altogether more striking, with a body that is 53mm higher and 23mm wider. The result is a

purposeful stance, and one that can finally mix it with the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Audi Q3 and forthcoming Mercedes GLC. It’s actually shorter than before, but the lengthened wheelbase means there’s

more room inside. The new car shares its underpinnings with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, on the new UKL2 platform. That means basic cars are in fact

so potential owners can rest assured that things will be dealt with should the worst happen. In fact, a mid-table 100th place finish for the previous-generation car isn’t a bad showing considering the X1 is now more than six years old. We expect this model to surpass its predecessor in next year’s standings.

As it’s so new though, Euro N C A P haven’t b e e n given an opportunity to put the X 1 through its stringent crash tests. However, the old car got five out of five, and we’ve no reason to believe the new one will be any different.

Plans to close ‘alarming’ loophole allowing firms to ‘fix’ car mileage UK Government plans to close what ministers warn is an “alarming” loophole allowing firms to ‘fix’ mileage on cars has been welcomed by motoring organisations. Responding to concern over companies exploiting gaps in the law – where mileage can be adjusted but it is illegal to sell the vehicle without informing the buyer Business Minister, Anna Soubry, has pledged to act. “I will look into this, along with my colleagues at the Ministry of Justice and in the Crown Prosecution Service, and we will stop it,” said Ms Soubry. She described the current state of affairs as an “alarming legal loophole,” in response to an investigation by The Sun into the extent of the problem. Fixing the mileage on cars, known as ‘clocking’, used to be done by manually winding back the odometer which measures the distance travelled. But the new method is electronic, with most cars displaying mileage digitally. And for as little as £40 people can change their mileage just by having a computer hooked up to their vehicle or replacing the computer chip which stores the information. Around 100 companies in Britain specialise in altering mileage. Many are careful to include a disclaimer reminding people that it is illegal to change mileage for personal gain,

and sell vehicles without disclosing any adjustments made. But widespread abuse of legal loopholes are creating safety issues posed by ageing cars masquerading as new ones, not to mention fraud when second-hand cars are considerably more used than they appear, say campaigners. An AA spokesperson said: “The sale and prevalence of clock adjustment services is very worrying, there are some legitimate needs but not on the scale of what you see out there in the market.” And Tim Milsom, a motor trade lead officer at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, warned: “The growing popularity of private car leasing has led to an increase in car clocking. Some unscrupulous owners that go over their mileage allowances would rather adjust the odometer than pay additional

fees.” Mike Hawes, the SMMT Chief Executive said: “Given it is extremely rare that a vehicle will need its mileage to be altered, we see no reason for the online availability of mileage correction devices, and would support further punitive measures to reduce the risk of clocking. “The industry is continually enhancing the levels of security protection on electronic systems – as well as maintaining a close relationship with government bodies to ensure vehicle mileages are recorded on a central database as part of the annual MOT test.” Mileage fraud affects up to 12 per cent of used car sales across Europe, according to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. And the European Union is proposing to ban ‘mileage correction’ services by 2018.

New Motorbikes Arrive in Torrevieja

We have spoken about the renewal plans for the Guardia Civil fleet before, but this week, the Torrevieja traffic department took delivery of their new motorbikes, which will take to the roads within the next two months. These new motorbikes are adapted versions of the powerful Yamaha FJR 1300, which is replacing the traditional and trusted BMW. We went along to the garage this week to check them out and show you what these new vehicles mean for the officers. The standard BMW R1200RT was first introduced in 2005 to replace the R1150RT model and features a 1,170 cc flat-twin engine with a six-speed gearbox, with 109 hp and a top speed of around 200 kilometres per hour. The Guardia Civil in Torrevieja currently use the BMW R850RT, an 848 cc, a four stroke, two-cylinder, horizontally-opposed Boxer engine equipped motorbike, offering 73 hp and a top speed of 186.2 kilometres per hour. From a cruising

speed of 60 kilometres per hour, the bike can stop in just 14.2 metres and from standing can go from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in just 5.8 seconds. By comparison, the FJR 1300 has a 1,298 cc inlinefour liquid-cooled, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, electronic fuel injection engine, offering 141.5 hp. The bike under normal conditions has a top speed of around 240 kilometres per hour, although is considered more fuel efficient under normal road speed conditions. The vehicle is factory adapted with a single seat and panniers to carry the equipment needed on their daily patrols, and has adapted handlebars to enable the rider to sit upright, rather than in the stopped, racing position. Over the next few months they will gradually be seen on the local road network, but not before a trip to Alicante, one by one, to have new windscreens and radios fitted. The bikes are equipped with sirens and lights and

carry a fire extinguisher. They also have fixed holders and brackets for the PDA personal digital assistant and printers, so that nothing moves whist the bike is in motion. In addition, the officers carry documents to enable them to make reports when there is a minor accident. The helmets are equipped with Bluetooth which is connected to a radio in the rear of the bike so the officers can communicate with both the central control centre to enable them to request information such as number plate identification whilst riding, as well as checking the status of the ITV, insurance and driving license of the vehicle owner. The radio also allows direct communication with their colleagues. In order to keep the bikes in premium condition, they are serviced by the official garages, BMW or Yamaha, every 5,000 or 10,000 kilometres depending on what the motorbikes need. In addition, the wheels are changed every 7,000 kilometres for safety reasons.

Some bikes had been fitted with cameras in the past, but these were part of a testing scheme for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), they were not hidden speed cameras or radar detectors as some people thought. Although if you think that means they can´t test your speed, think again, the Guardia Civil have a range of speed detectors, so you never know when or from where your activities are being watched.

Although highly trained on the machines, in fact the training scheme is one of the most highly respected across European police forces, one of the unusual characteristics of the Guardia Civil traffic police is that all of the officers ride motorbikes and drive cars as part of their routine duties, so it is quite normal for the officers to be using different modes of transport on a daily basis. The Torrevieja department also took charge of a new

Watch Your Speed!

The European Traffic Police network, TISPOL, will be carrying out a special vigilance campaign against speeding motorists from this weekend, which means that the European road network will see an increase in patrols of traffic police looking for speeding motorists.

Extra mobile speed checks will be in place around Spain, especially on roads which are known to have more incidents than others, such as main roads. According to the DGT, inappropriate speed was a factor in 10% of the 89,500 injury incidents during 2013,

a figure that rises to 17% when filtering out incidents to only include those on the main roads. In fatal incidents, excessive speed was a contributory factor in 22% of all incidents. Therefore, according to the DGT, if all vehicles were travelling at the right

speed, a quarter of those killed, around 400 people, would still be alive and 1,680 incidents would have been avoided. All roads have speed limits, generic or specific, and if this limit is exceeded then a driver, if detected, will be punished. But even if a vehicle is driving below the allowed maximum limit, external circumstances such as rain or ice, or vehicle characteristics such as using an emergency wheel can alter what is an appropriate speed to drive at. The Road Safety Laws dictate that a driver must respect the speed limits and adapt the vehicle´s speed so as to allow it to stop in its field of view, taking into account any obstacles or hazards that might present themselves, taking into account their physical and mental conditions, characteristics and condition of the road, vehicle load, weather, traffic and other circum-

stances. That is the safe speed. The faster your car is travelling, the more distance and time it will take to stop. Stopping distances consist of two parts, reaction time and braking time. The average reaction time is between 1 and 1.5 seconds, during which time the vehicle is continuing towards a potential hazard at speed. The faster the vehicle is travelling, the more distance it will cover in this time. Reaction times can be altered by other characteristics such as distraction, alcohol or drugs, or other factors. The actual braking distance then depends on the speed of the vehicle, as well as other factors such as the road and weather conditions, condition of the vehicle and brakes, the age of the vehicle and the actions of the driver, amongst other factors. In wet conditions, the stopping distance is doubled. In icy conditions, in the case

Fiat multipurpose car this week, which also replaces an older version of the same model, and is fitted with a computerised breathalyser system for performing alcohol tests at the roadside anywhere on the network. These vehicles are also fitted with a range of safety and security equipment to enable to officers to respond to any of the challenges they face on a regular basis whilst keeping the roads of Spain safe for us all.

of ice, stopping distances can be up to ten times that of normal, optimum conditions. Reducing speed not only allows for more reaction time and an increased chance of stopping, it also reduces the damage in the event of a collision, possibly even making the difference between life and death in many cases. According to the 2004 Nilsson report, a decrease of 1% of the average speed on a road produces a 4% reduction in fatal crashes. In addition, it is argued that a reduction of 10 km / h of speed limits would imply a reduction in mortality of around 10%. Although traffic police will be out in force monitoring speed on the road and from the air, it is in everybody´s interest to be more vigilant and respectful of the limits put in place, not only by means of the signs on the road, but also the signs that indicate the factors that may mean the need to slow down is greater.

What the Evolution of Facebook Teaches Us The growth of Facebook is the success story of our times.

The social media giant has astonished with its development and the way it's shaped an entire generation, getting hundreds of millions around the world hooked on social networking. Over the years it has evolved considerably, though its ethos has remained the same - as has its familiar white and blue colour scheme. The evolution of Facebook as a business teaches us valuable lessons about seeing new opportunities and changing business goals. Here are a few. Begin with a solid idea and a clear purpose No one could have foreseen the kind of success Facebook has now achieved when it first started out as a social network for university students in Harvard, but the idea obviously resonated with many people.

Not just students, but people everywhere are very eager to know what's going on in the lives of those in their social circles. People love to share and to think out loud. Everyone loves to have an audience, however small it may be. Facebook’s success, and that of other similar networks, rests on this one fundamental principle – allowing people to share information and cultivate relationships. The lesson: Ideas and vision power successful businesses. They guide a company through its ups and downs, and help it scale newer heights. More than innovative, an idea has to be sound in order to be successful. Change is risky, but an opportunity to grow When you're as popular as Facebook, tinkering with anything is a risk. People usually don’t like change - they might even hate it if

they;re comfortable with the existing ways. But change is also inevitable. It’s a sign of progress and evolution. Facebook began with a basic interface in February 2004. It contained profiles of its users and updates about who had befriended whom. There was little else going on. A couple of years later arrived the News Feed, the first major change on the network, as it moved beyond colleges and towards general public. By 2008, Facebook had a significantly different and refined look. In 2010 the network opened up to businesses/brands for them to have dedicated Facebook pages and invite fans/followers to connect with them. Now we had almost everyone joining the network, ballooning its numbers. The year 2011 saw the introduction of the Timeline, accom-

panied by a big cover photo at the top of the page. There were also numerous other small updates and refinements that Facebook made to its site in order to improve its aesthetics as well as enhance the user experience. These changes were not always accepted happily. In fact, many were very vocal about their displeasure with them, yet the network continued to see greater usage and bigger follower bases. The lesson: Change can be scary but don’t let that fear hold you back, or you risk stagnation. When you're able to execute the changes well and convince the users/customers of the usefulness of the new features, they will learn to accept change – embrace it, even. When you mess up, accept the mistakes and rectify them.

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca. BlueMoon Solutions come to you at home or work, our personal service covers from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada.

Richard moved to Spain ten years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Jennifer wanted to know how to stop her com- ADVICE: Lorraine received an email from Microsoft regarding her One Drive account and its change in puter from updating to Windows 10 storage limits.

Q

Hi Richard, I hope you are keeping well, will you help me? I have amessage on my laptop saying that windows 10 will be installed on my laptop on 2nd April I don't want windows 10. Is there any way I can stop this happening? I am scared to upgrade to windows 10 in case it is not compatible with my Microsoft office outlook where I organise all my e mails as I have all the community e mails stored there as I am the President (for 81/2 years). I have read your reply to a lady where you said that you can revert back to Windows 7 within the 1st month after the upgrade. Will I have to install windows 10 then revert back. Please Help.Regards to you both, Jennifer.

A

Hi Jennifer, yes you can remove the "Get Windows 10" update that was installed onto your computer as part of the monthly updates, just navigate to the "Programs and Features" section of the control panel and select "view installed updates", now you need to look for and uninstall the updated KB3035583, this will remove the popup and stop your machine from updating. Having said that, Microsoft Outlook is fully compatible with Windows 10 but of course if you do decide to run the update you should ensure that everything is fully backed up first.

Q A

Hi Richard, received info on One Drive, telling us that from the end of June our storage limit will be reduced is it correct that if we want to continue using one drive to store files that we will have to pay?

Hi Lorraine, yes it’s true that Microsoft are revising their storage limits, there has been a bit of a backlash from users about this, however essentially if you are a free account One Drive user, your storage limit will change from 15Gb down to 5Gb. If you have more than 5Gb on your one drive, Microsoft will allow you to continue to access it for 12 months, alternatively, as you will have seen from the email, you can upgrade to Office 365 personal edition to upgrade to 1Tb of storage. So I guess the first thing to do is figure out how much you currently have stored and go from there.

Mentals On Top

Glittering Prizes

The Los Montesinosbased walking football team, the Monte Mentals hosted their counterparts from neighbouring Algorfa last week, and though the

hosts won all the matches played, it was a thoroughly enjoyable session for both squads played in a great injury-free spirit. The Mentals are now get-

ting readiy to host a tournament in mid-May featuring teams from Birmingham City and Mansfield Town, as well as local teams from Algorfa and Moraira.

Kuhn Conquers Again Local international gymnast, Polina Berezina, took the sportsperson of the year award at Torrevieja’s 22nd Annual Gala on Sunday. She was supported by 47 nominees from local sports clubs as well as in the first ever public vote for the award which was presented by Torrevieja’s mayor, José Manuel Dolon. The event, which was staged at the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre, saw

locally-based Irish rower, Dervia Forde of Club Marina Salinas take the most promising female award, whilst sailor José María Wandosell Hódar, from the Real Club Náutico won the men’s equivalent. Pedro Abad from the Torrevieja Judo club was given the best coach honour. Sports councillor, Pablo Samper, said that two and a half thousand people had got involved in voting for the award winners via Facebook.

Fran Sacked

Second-bottom Getafe responded to their threemonth spell without a win by sacking coach Fran Escriba on Monday. The successful ex-Elche boss Escriba became the 10th La Liga coach to be relieved of his duties this season. Getafe's 20 reverse at Villarreal on Sunday was their 10th defeat in 12 games. They have not won in the league since beating Espanyol 3-1 on January 17."The club thank him (Escriba) for his work and wish him luck in his professional future," Getafe said in a statement. The Madrid outfit were promoted to La Liga for the first time in 2004 and have remained in the top flight ever

since. Escriba proved to be a big success at Elche getting them promoted into the top flight and keeping them there for a season, before their financial problems including the nonpayment of wages saw them relegated for administrative reasons after Escriba had guided them to a creditable mid-table position last May. Many of his fellow managers at the time believed that Escriba’s achievements at Elche were worthy of him being given the accolade of “Coach of the Year”, and he only left the Ilicitanos for Getafe once it was all but certain that the courts would uphold Elche’s relegation.

TUG-o'-war tennis sensation Nicola Kuhn celebrated his official switch to Spanish citizenship by winning the nation's most prestigious junior tournament on Sunday, writes DONNA GEE. Just three weeks after his 16th birthday, Kuhn won the Juan Carlos Ferrero Trophy at Villena – Spain's only Grade 1 tournament for players aged 18 and under. It was his second tournament success in a row after he bagged the Grade 2 title at Vinaros, near Castellon the previous week. And to emphasise his huge talent, the superfit six-footer from Torrevieja was one of the youngest competitors in both tournaments. The back-to-back victories earned Kuhn a mammoth 250 ITF ranking points, rocketing him to the fringe of the world's top 20 juniors – and providing a timely morale-

booster for his first tilt at the French Open at Roland Garros next month. The son of a German father and Russian mother, Innsbruck-born Nico and his family have lived in Torrevieja since he was three months old. However, he switched his tennis allegiance to Germany when the country he regards as home felt unable to help with his colossal travel and equipment costs. Over the past four years the Kuhn kid has led the German juniors to a string of successes, including the Final of last year's Junior Davis Cup, in which he was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Despite those successes, Nico never felt totally comfortable playing for Germany, even though he speaks the language fluently, along with English and Russian. ''I have always felt more

Spanish than anything – and Spain has always been my home,'' he says. “And with major sponsors like La Liga, Nike and Yonex now backing his progress, last year he began the process of switching to playing under the Spanish flag.” The switch proved to be far more complicated than Nico and his parents had expected – not least the red tape involved in obtaining a Spanish passport in addition to the one Nico already had. The official switch finally came last week, coinciding with the Juan Carlos Ferrero tournament – which also happens to be his 'home' base. He has trained and studied at former world No.1 Ferrero's's academy in Villena since he was 12 and the manner of his victory in Sunday's final against fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich was not ideal, after he retired with a back injury after Kuhn took the first set 6-3 and lead 1-0 in the second set. Nico, who began 2016 ranked No.70, is well ahead of schedule in his declared aim of reaching the world Top 10 this year. He has also set his sights on climbing into the ATP's top 600 and providing a springboard to fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a top professional player. "I feel I am playing really good tennis at present,'' he told me this week. With the French Open little more than a month away, boy-king Kuhn is hoping that his imperious form goes with him to Roland Garros as he bids to become one of the youngest-ever Junior Grand Slam winners.

Start Them Young

165 boys and girls took part in last weekend’s Rugby tournament organised by ITV Orihuela Vega Baja and staged at the Beniel football ground. Youngsters from the home side took part as well as teams from Murcia, Cartagena, Totana, and Torres de Cotillas.

Linea Deal

Insurers Linea Directa is to sponsor this year’s Spanish National Lawn Bowls Championships on the Orihuela Costa next month. The Championship committee say that as a result of the substantial figure involved in backing the event, the competition has been renamed as the Linea Directa Lawn Bowls Championships. The event organisers say they are grateful for the generous backing and are hopeful that it will be the start of a long association with the international insurers. They are keen that if you contact Linea Directa to get an insurance quote, then you tell them that you are doing so because of the bowls sponsorship, which will help them a great deal! All the matches will take place at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club during over a fortnight starting on Saturday May 14th, and everybody is invited to come along to watch some great bowls as well as finding out how to make some great savings with Linea Directa.

Willett Masters Augusta

A lot will have been written about last weekend’s Masters winner Danny Willett, so I am not going to change the trend, and after my article last week, I guess he was not on your short list as a possible victor. He might not even have been playing last weekend, and now the Yorkshireman after Jordan Spieth finally ran out of luck in the middle of last Sunday’s final round. To say Danny Willett’s Green Jacket materialised suddenly would be an understatement. When Jordan Spieth reached the turn he held a five-shot lead. Then he went bogey, bogey, quadruple bogey, while Willett birdied both the 13th and 14th. A seven-shot swing had taken place. On a course that was brutally difficult all week, Sheffield’s finest made only nine bogeys and nothing worse. On Sunday, there were five birdies and no

dropped shots. Before anyone really knew it, this was Willett’s Green Jacket. There was more than a resemblance of the only other Englishman to win the Masters, Nick Faldo, exactly 20 years ago. Then, Faldo entered the final round six shots behind the leader, Greg Norman, and posted a 67 to win by five. Willett was three back at the start of play. He finished three shots ahead of Spieth and his playing partner Lee Westwood. If truth be told, it was a major benefit for Danny Willett to be paired with Lee Westwood as it gave him a more comfortable day knowing Lee and his caddy Billy Foster. But this was not supposed to be where the challenge came from. The only players realistically capable of catching Spieth were thought to be Jason Day and perhaps Dustin Johnson and Hideki

Matsuyama or even Westwood if you were being optimistic. Perhaps Rory McIlroy if anyone could mount a traditional Augusta charge. But a 28-year-old from South Yorkshire, the last man to register last week because he was spending as long as possible at home beforehand with his newborn son, Zachary, and wife Nicole? Hardly. The last round fell on both his wife’s 28th birthday and Zachary’s due date. As it happened, his firstborn was delivered by planned C-section a week early. In fact Zach was due to be born on the April 10th. With only one previous Masters to his name, a creditable if unremarkable tie for 41st, there was little in the way of course form to go on. This was not, though, the first time the Yorkshire man had experienced the top end of a Major leaderboard. At the halfway point of

last year’s Open at St Andrews, Willett led the field. He never quite looked comfortable though and a drive out of bounds at the 14th in the third round took him out of the spotlight. To his credit, he finished the week strongly to come in sixth, easily the best Major finish of his career at the time. THE ORIGINS OF DANNY’S GREEN JACKET There is no doubt, with the benefit of hindsight, that last season was the making of him. There were two wins on the European Tour, in the Nedbank and the European Masters. That established him in the all-important world top 50. In February, he claimed the biggest prize of his career to date at the Dubai Desert Classic. Perhaps even more significant was a third place at Doral in the WGC last month. Willett has never lacked for confidence but

without a PGA Tour win to his name, this was the next best thing. It took him to the brink of the world top 10, 12th to be precise, but barely acknowledged as a Major contender, especially in America. That has all changed now. Willett’s Green Jacket has its roots at Rotherham Golf Club, known locally as Thrybergh, where he has been a member since his junior days. As an amateur, he leapt to prominence in 2007 by winning that year’s Yorkshire Amateur and propelling himself from nowhere to that September’s storied Walker Cup at Royal County Down. He becomes the third man playing that week to win a Major championship, after Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson. Also in action in Northern Ireland were the likes of Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and Billy Horschel, to name a few. This son of a vicar is hardly golfing royalty, far from it. He is not part of the so-called golden generation of Englishmen that includes Justin Rose, Paul Casey, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter.

Now he is a member of one the most exclusive clubs in golf. He is the first European to win a Green Jacket this millennium (Jose Maria Olazabal was the last, in 1999). He will make his Ryder Cup debut in September. He now ranked as world number nine. Coupled with the birth of his son, Willett’s life has changed beyond recognition in the past two weeks. At least the former was expected. Out of the blue has come the Green Jacket and a bumper one and half million euro winning cheque plus a guaranteed place on Darren Clarke’s Ryder Cup team.. Another interesting fact is that in 1986, Jack Nicklaus won his last Masters with his son on the bag, his caddy boiler suit was numbered 88, Jonathan Smart caddy number was 89 as if it was written that the next surprise winner would have the next caddy number. England had eight players in the field at Augusta. Seven of them made the cut. Four of them finished in the top 10. One of them won. Jolly good show, what?

TITTER ON THE TEE A teacher asked her class, "What do you want out of life?" A little girl in the back row raised her hand and said, "All I want out of life is four little animals, just like my Mom always says". The teacher asked, "Really and what four little animals would that be?" The little girl said, "A Mink on my back, a Jaguar in the garage, a Tiger in the bed and a Jackass to pay for all of it. The teacher got a coughing fit and had to leave the room.

CD TORREVIEJA 4 CD BUNOL 2 This was a casual win for Torrevieja, effectively wrapped up by the interval when they were 3-1 to the good. Bunol sit just outside the relegation places and scrapped for the full ninety minutes but were no match for a technically superior home unit. Torry on the other hand appeared to ease through the game. They could have and should have scored seven or eight, but despite their dominance, showed their customary trait of failing to have that killer touch. That

might seem harsh on a side who netted four and hit the post twice, but it remains a fact. Having said that, the Torry goals were well worked and three of them were expertly executed. Higon only had to guide the ball into the empty net on seven minutes after excellent fast interplay down the left, with Prieto striking against the post. They allowed Bunol back into the game six minutes later, showing a soft centre, that despite the impos-

ing presence of Jorge and the returning Martin. However, two treats from the boots of Rafa and then Prieto put the match safely in Torry's arms. Rafa bent his shot in from the edge of the box but Prieto's outside of the foot curling effort looked top class. Torry added to this through a superb Chupe strike shortly after the interval, and then Prieto shot over the bar when it genuinely seemed easier to score. Bunol pulled one back to make

the scoreline look respectable, if somewhat imbalanced. Though Chupe won the Man of the Match award (sponsored by Pinada Blinds), it was perhaps Carrasco who looked even more impressive along with Higon who were the outstanding Torry players on the day, and they go to Paterna this Sunday lying in eleventh place, and wondering what might have been this season after a disastrous autumn and just five fixtures remaining.

Not All About The Win! SAN ISIDRO CF 0 CD MONTESINOS 4

A second successive fournil away win for Montesinos was really easy pickings on the back of a fine win over promotion-chasing Racing San Miguel, but the devil is in the detail as Monte gave one of their worst performances of the season against a poor relegation-threatened San Isidro outfit. There was an excuse that it was a secondstring Monte side with a number of key players missing due to suspension and ill-

ness, and so they were replaced by a number of youth squad members. The quality level though should still have been much better than what was served up in a Saturday stinker. It was one of the younger players, Yeray, who opened the scoring with his first goal for the senior side, with just five minutes on the clock. Macan should have done better with a header which went wide but that was about the

best of a dull first half which saw four players (two from each side) yellow carded for dissent, although Monte keeper Lopez was unfortunate as he was clearly fouled and needed treatment. Monte manager Roberto could be clearly heard at the interval giving his side a real roasting in the changing room, and though things got better, the overall level was still way below Monte’s improved standards this season, and it was only when Wallace came on ten minutes into the second half, that the team started to create chances. Dani Orourke doubled the advantage with a header from a free kick, which was the cue to substi-

tute Lopez for another youngster as Alex took over in goal as the first choice keeper hobbled off injured. Orourke made it three-nil with an almost identical headed goal ten minutes later, and the scoring was completed after young Yeray beat his player out wide and crossed for Wallace to tap into an empty net from close range. CD Montesinos lie fifth, just outside the top group of clubs in the S e c o n d Regional Group 15, and they entertain football club CD Almoradi “B” this Saturday evening (as opposed to Sunday) with a 6.00 pm kick-off.

The Courier Sport

UTD’S FA CUP R O F E N I L LIFE

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 30 goals in six successive La Liga seasons as Real Madrid beat Eibar comfortably last Saturday, and with Barcelona losing again, third-placed Real are just four points off the top in a contest that appeared to be over a fortnight ago. James Rodriguez steered in a free-kick, with Lucas Vazquez adding a second. It was 4-0 by half-time, with Ronaldo firing in a square pass from Jese, who tapped in the fourth. Real now go to struggling Getafe tomorrow afternoon.

Rallying Call REAL SOCIEDAD 1 BARCELONA 0

Barcelona are "in a hole" and "finding it difficult to score goals" admitted boss Luis Enrique following their shock Champions League quarter-final defeat on Wednesday. The holders were beaten 3-2 on aggregate by Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, who won the second leg 2-0. "The team are sad. We aren't at our best at the moment, nor our most effective," he said. Antoine Griezmann scored both goals for Atletico at the Vicente Calderon, while Lionel Messi failed to net for the fifth club game in a row.

Ronaldo On A Roll REAL MADRID 3 WOLFSBURG 0 (agg 3-2)

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique believes his team cannot afford to drop any more points after their lead at the top of La Liga was cut to three points on Saturday following their shock defeat at Real Sociedad. Barca's nine-point advantage a fortnight ago over second-placed Atletico Madrid has been cut to three with six games remaining. "It's obvious that we can't lose any more points now, we weren't at our best in recent games and this league will be won by the most consistent team in the remaining games," Enrique said. His side entertain Valencia this Sunday evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo hit back at his critics after his 35th career hat-trick helped Real Madrid reach the semi-finals of the Champions League after Real overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat Wolfsburg on Tuesday. "People can criticise me but I just keep on going and the numbers are there for all to see. I am very happy and with a month left of the season I can get even better.

Transfer Gossip Manchester United and Manchester City are reportedly ready to go head-to-head this summer with Gareth Bale eyeing a Premier League return. Sergio Ramos is being lined up by Antonio Conte to replace Branislav Ivanovic should the latter leave Stamford Bridge in the summer; Roma have been credited with an interest in the Serb.

Two play-off contenders shared the spoils on Sunday, but it will be the Ilicitanos that came away the happier as keeper Javi Jiménez was kept busy in the visitor’s goal. Elche, Osasuna, Zaragoza, and Alcorcon all now have 49 points, taking in fifth to eighth spots in a tight table, with the play-off battle almost certain to go to the proverbial wire. As for Sunday, Elche did have chances from Héctor and Alex Moreno both of which were saved by keeper Nauzet, in a relatively quiet outing for top scorer Sergio León. At the other end, the home side created half a dozen clear cut chances, the closest of which saw a header from a corner hit the crossbar. Next for Elche is a home match early tomorrow evening at 6.00 pm as they play Lugo who are two points behind them in the Segunda table.

Roberto Martinez has called for unity among disgruntled Everton supporters as he prepares for a crucial run of games which will shape his future as manager. Southampton are ready to make Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain their highest-paid player this summer. Liverpool have lined up Bayern Munich's fitness coach, Andreas Kornmayer, to become their head of fitness and conditioning next season. Chelsea may be able to re-sign Romelu Lukaku for a discounted fee, it has emerged. It is claimed that the original £28m deal that saw Lukaku join Everton in 2014 contains a number of financial clauses - including one which will be triggered if Everton win the FA Cup this term.

Benteke's Liverpool Club legend Phil Thompson believes it is clear that Christian Benteke's Liverpool career is over, suggesting the striker will be keen to leave in the summer. With just one goal in 16 appearances in all competitions since the turn of the year, Benteke his slipped behind Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in the pecking order, failing to make any of Jurgen Klopp's last 12 starting line-ups. The Belgium striker is currently sidelined with a knee injury picked up on international duty and Soccer Saturday pundit Thommo struggles to see him turning things around between now and the end of the season. He said: "You don't need to be an expert or an insider to see that Benteke will be looking to move on in the summer. We're all trying to read between the lines and I don't know anything definite but it looks like he's all but gone. "I would say for the sake of his own career he needs to leave. He's got the Euros coming up and he's going to be sat on the bench with Romelu Lukaku starting and he won't want the same to happen next season.

The smart money was on West Ham winning this FA Cup sixth-round replay to face Everton at Wembley in the semi-finals: but an exciting, strangely competentlooking Man United saw the Red Devils through 2 – 1 with a belter from Marcus Rashford soon followed by a second from Marouane Fellaini. In form ex-England striker Andy Carroll just did not see enough of the ball, although making the Hammers late consolation goal for Tomkins - but it was too little, too late as the old Upton Park stadium was rocking. Question: will the same passion be generated next year in the ex-Olympic stadium, West Ham’s new home? As for United. van Gaal’s guys must fancy their chances against an erratic Everton side – and the big Dutchman doesn’t look like he’s quitting – well, not for now, anyway.

"He can't do the pressing game that Jurgen Klopp demands and you can't have £32.5m strikers sat on the bench playing a bit part. "Danny Ings is coming back as well and he's more suited to doing what Klopp expects, so Benteke could find himself fourth in the pecking order." Thommo sees the Chinese Super League as Benteke's most likely destination, while he thinks it is unlikely that Liverpool would sell to rivals Everton, who could lose Lukaku in the summer. He added: "Football is stranger than ever but I still think it would be highly unlikely that they'd sell to Everton. I remember back when I was youth team coach we sold Peter Beardsley to Everton and I thought it would come back to bite us, which it did. "The way the Chinese market is going you'd think that is the most likely source for Liverpool to recoup the fee they spent on him. I'd imagine it will be a similar case for Mario Balotelli."

In the year of Euro 2016. England got an early victory in over France as Man City beat the French champions PSG 1 – 0 in their Tuesday night second leg Champions League quarter-final, going through 3 – 2 on aggregate. Amazingly normally-deadly striker Sergio Aguero missed an early penalty, but with Yaya Toure on the bench City still looked the better team and deserved their victory with a late Kevin de Bruyne winner. A depleted-frominjuries-and-suspensions PSG had their moments but England goalkeeper Joe Hart was in great form, twice saving brilliantly from the always dangerous Ziatan Ibrahimovic. Now in Manuel Pellegrini’s last stand City go into the semifinals for the first time along with Real Madrid, Atletico and Bayern Munich. On their day, current League Cup holders City are capable of beating anyone, but some indifferent performances this season have left the Blues in a disappointing fourth place in the Premier League. This Saturday evening, in a

Battle of the Blues, weary City must gird their loins and go again at Stamford Bridge, but facing a Chelsea side with many questions being asked as the transfer rumour mill is about to go into overdrive. What an unbelievably disastrous time Barcelona are having of late. Recently beaten 2 – 1 in La Liga by 10 men Real Madrid, on Wednesday in the Champions League quarter–finals it was Atletico who put the favourites, the Catalan giants out (see opposite), a side containing Messi, S u a r e z , N e y m a r , Iniesta, Pique, Mascherano et al. Now the immense question: with six games to go in La L i g a , Barca are t h r e e points

clear of Atletico, and four clear of Real Madrid. Is that enough? But also it has to be said this was a towering performance by Diego Simeone’s side, well done to them. Are Barcelona worried? You bet they are. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also in the semi-finals with Atletico and Man City, who look the underdogs on paper. The draw will be made this lunchtime at 12.30 pm.

ALONSO A KHAN TO RULE WORLD BIG DOUBT

Amir Khan has vowed to "shock the world" by pulling off an audacious upset win over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The British fighter has climbed almost two weight divisions to face Alvarez at 155lbs with the WBC middleweight belt on the line, his biggest fight of his career in Las Vegas on May 7. Khan admits he cannot afford any defensive lapses against the Mexican.

Fernando Alonso says he does not know whether he will be able to race in this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix. Champions-elect Leicester are home to West Ham on Sunday, the Hammers’ super season sliding away with their FA Cup 2 – 1 exit at Man United’s hands at home on Wednesday, following several exciting score draws in the Prem in recent weeks. Fifth place, ironically one point behind United looks not good enough for Europe, can Slaven Bilic’s boys step up to stop the Leicester lads lunge towards the title? The Foxes will then only have four to play: Swansea, Man United, Everton and Chelsea, all games are eminently winnable with only United having more to play for than pride. The Red Devils look assured of three points against Villa, anything else would be a disaster in the final, all-important run-in. We’ll all have to wait ‘til Monday to see if Spurs can keep hunting the Foxes, Tottenham away to going-nowhere Stoke. By the way, it says a lot for the Foxes great season that Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N'Golo Kante have all been named on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award.

S E I R A N CA Six-pointer? Make that twelve, a seasonal summit as third-bottom Sunderland travel to Carrow Road early doors on Saturday, to take on a Norwich side that sit one place above them just above the Dreaded Drop Department. The Canaries have 31 points, having played one more than the Black Cats who have 27, but Sam’s Sunderland are a side who just dare not contemplate defeat in East Anglia as time is running out. Norwich? Owner Delia Smith will be roaring ‘em on with another loud ‘Let’s be having you!’ If resurgent Swansea get anything at St James’ Park then Newcastle are as good as relegated. A lot depends on the Norwich and Sunderland result, but the famous Toon spirit, the Geordies fight to survive is just not there any more with this group of mere mercenaries: the 50,000 loyal supporters deserve much more, but it will take a drop into the Championship to sort Newcastle out.

Premier League Champions League qualification for next season is complicated, because Man City and Liverpool are still in the present Champions League and Europa League final stages respectively. The top three Prem teams will qualify for the group stage of next season's Champions League, with the fourthplaced team entering in the play-off round. The fifthplaced team will enter the Europa League at the group stage, as will the FA Cup winners. Leicester City are guaranteed a top-four finish following their 2-0 win against Sunderland and can clinch the title by winning three of their last five games. Manchester City are already assured of at least a Europa League place after winning the Capital One Cup. If the Blues finish in the top four, their place in the Europa League third qualifying round will pass to the sixth-placed team. Should City win the Champions League and finish outside the top four, they will enter the Champions League at the group stage. If Liverpool win the Europa League, they will qualify for the Champions League. Any questions?

begins his campaign at 11.00 am tomorrow, playing to a conclusion on the same day. World number two Bingham, who won a shock maiden world title last year despite being a 50-1 outsider at the start of the tournament, drew one of the most difficult qualifiers in Carter.
