PESETA IS BACK SPANISH TOWN TRADING IN THE PESETA AGAIN
Over One And A Half BILLION Euros Worth Of Pesetas Are Out There Somewhere! With the rise of oil prices threatening to slow down a Spanish economy that is already suffering, Spain has decided that enough is enough and is fighting back and in just the space of a week this wonderful country and its people have decided to begin their battle, and with a little ingenuity. In the first few days of a dramatic week Prime Minister Zapatero and his socialist government cut the speed limit on Spanish motorways (from 120km/h down to 110km/h) to kick off their energy-saving drive.
But a few days later we heard about a small town in Galicia, Mugardos, that had decided to turn the clock back almost ten years and is now, once more, trading in pesetas. The reason? when the euro was introduced in 2002 more than 1.5€ billion were never exchanged by the public and cleverly the town's 60 shopkeepers have begun accepting them again in the hope of mopping up some of the cash that’s lying around in people’s homes and it seems to be working as shoppers have been flooding into the town with their pesetas.
