NOT SO MANY HAPPY RETURNS Man cheats death in birthday blast By Alex Trelinski A Torrevieja man is lucky to be alive after getting an unwanted birthday present: - an explosion in his second floor Playa de Los Naufragos flat, that catapulted him 20 metres down onto the pavement, through the freshly created gap in his galeria. Daran Cooper, 48, was cooking a celebration dinner in his kitchen last Tuesday night, whilst his partner, Carmen, was trying to kill a cockroach with an insecticide spray. She passed the can to Daran as the pest flew towards their washing machine. Speaking exclusively to The Courier from Torrevieja Hospital, Daran explained what happened next. “I started spraying at the
cockroach, and some of the gas must have got into the washing machine. A moment later, there was the click of the wash cycle, followed by an almighty bang as I flew through where the wall used to be!” “There was glass and all kinds of stuff in the air, but miraculously I stayed conscious all the time, and all I could think of, was that I had to protect my head”. The big blast totally ripped out his galeria wall, but Carmen escaped unscathed, whilst their 5 year old son, Sebastian was tucked up safely in bed. Daran fell onto the pavement just next to a parked car. “I’m just glad to be alive. If I’d lost consciousness, I would have died.” he added. “I made sure that my arms and hands took the brunt of the fall, and by sheer luck I was wearing Superman underpants at the time!” His main injury was a bone petruding through his elbow, which needed an operation on Wednesday. Daran also suffered a broken wrist; general bruis-
ing: and he needed some head stitches. Not surprisingly he’s still in a great deal of pain. “It was an incredible escape”, said Daran’s parents, Harry and Elaine Cooper. “The wall and window were taken out and it could have been so much worse for our son”. “The emergency services were excellent”
added Harry, “…..and they did everything possible for Daran. We’re just happy that he’s alive! It certainly was nothing to do with him blowing out the candles on his birthday cake!” Forensic experts have been at the scene, but so far there has been no official explanation for what caused the explosion, whilst the fate of the cockroach is unknown.

SAINTS ALIVE WITH A SISTER ACT MIRACLE A NEWLY born baby girl has made an incredible recovery from serious brain damage, and she may be made a saint. The Archbishop of Valencia, Carlos Osoro is to tell the Vatican that there’s absolutely no logical reason for the 4 year old to be still alive, and that he wants her to be canonised. 8 doctors have testified that Carmen was born prematurely with serious problems like double septicaemia and a brain haemorrhage, yet she is now full cured, with no medical explanation why. The girl’s father found out that she was born on the day of Santa Teresa de Jesus, and so he wanted to find some spiritual help and inspiration from a Carmelite convent in the Valencia region. He eventually found the nearest one to his home in Serra, and he went to meet the nuns. The Carmelite nuns told the desperate
father that they could see images of a married couple from France who had just been beatified. They were Louis Martin and Zélie Guerin, who were the parents of Saint Theresa of Lisieux. Whilst the family and friends of Carmen started to pray to the beatified couple, the nuns began a séance and centred their thoughts on the baby girl. From that moment on, she began to get better and is now four years old, completely healthy and with no after-effects whatsoever from the blood-poisoning and brain haemorrhage she suffered. Carmen's case is now about to be presented to the Vatican by the Italian Carmelite monk Antonio Sangalli, having passed the Diocese approval stage, which involved the Archbishop of Valencia and an abbot from Lisieux, in France. If it is accepted, it means that Carmen will become a saint.
Spain’s rude health rap
Spain has been rapped over not allowing tourists to use EHIC cards. European Commission chiefs have given a deadline for the Spanish Government to follow the rules of the pan-European health card. The EHIC is valid for emergency or on-going routine treatment in any EU country during a temporary stay. But a large number of Spanish holidaymakers have reported being asked for a credit card and health insurance when going to a hospital or a doctor's surgery, as well as being made to pay if they have
neither. Others who thought they were being treated on their EHICs, found out later that a bill had been sent to their private health insurer. Some say they have been told that if they have health insurance, their EHICs are not valid for treatment. Health insurance companies have complained to Brussels, with the European Commission spending the last three years trying to solve the problem with Spain.

ROMANIAN HITMEN KILL DUTCH COUPLE THE calling in of a debt was the motive behind the murder of a Dutch couple in Murcia last weekend. It’s also been revealed that Ingrid Visser, who disappeared 11 days ago in Murcia City with her partner, Lodewijk Severin, was three months pregnant. Police discovered their bodies in a lemon grove, having been taken there by the man who had ordered a hit on them. He was the manager of the volleyball team, CAV Murcia 2005, which Visser had played for, and he’d taken money from Severin for a business deal involving a quarry site that never happened. The couple had been undergoing fertility treatment at a Murcia clinic, and had decid-
ed to combine a holiday with a follow-up appointment. Whilst Ingrid was in the clinic, Severin decided to meet the ex-manager, named as Juan Cuenca Lorente to see about the money that he was owed for the deal that didn’t go through. He also had past fraud convictions and had simply pocketed Severin’s money without any quarry deal going through. Severin had been in constant contact with him to get the money back, and when Cuenca Lorente arranged to meet him in Murcia, the Dutchman thought the debt was going to be settled. But Cuenca Lorente had paid two Romanians to kill the couple, because, as he told the police, he felt
King’s daughter not off the hook
P R I N C E S S Cristina, the youngest daughter of Spain's King Juan Carlos, is to be investigated for possible tax fraud and other financial crimes. Corruption charges against her were suspended early last month, in controversial circumstances, but the same Mallorcan judge that ruled in her favour, has now ordered a
fresh investigation into her tax returns for the last ten years. The princess was initially named as a suspect and subpoenaed to testify in an investigation of fraud and embezzlement centring on her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma. The King has constantly denied any knowledge about the financial dealings of his daughter and son-in law.
ONE TOO MANY
A 70 year old cyclist was killed by a car in Los Narejos last Sunday, which then knocked over a 59 year old woman, before ploughing into a ditch. The driver, an Ecuadorian national, had minor injuries, and was said to have been over the drinkdrive limit. The cyclist was travelling on the F35 road not far from the junction for the Roda Golf Course, when he was struck
by the car. The driver is said to have hit a roadsign before colliding with the bicycle. He tried to help the victim, who had died instantly, but then noticed that he’d been spotted by two people. He tried to escape in his car, injuring a woman, before crashing the vehicle into a ditch. Guardia officers arrested a man, who is said to live in San Javier, and took him to Cartagena for questioning.
“backed into a corner and could not pay back the money that he had swindled from them”. Cuenca Lorente made a full confession and took the police to the flat in Molina de Segura, where the couple had been murdered before showing them where the bodies had been dumped. They had been cut up and placed in two plastic bags. He also told the police about the two Romanians, who were then arrested. After the couple did not return on their
flight to The Netherlands on May 15th, their families reported them missing and police found they had not used their bank cards since May 13th, nor had Ingrid turned up for her appointment at the clinic, and they had not checked into the Hotel Churra-Vistalegre in Murcia where they had arranged a twonight stay because of the appointment. Their hire car from Alicante Airport was nowhere to be found, but turned up on May 22nd, with no visible damage in Murcia City.

THIEVES who stole 140 kilos of cherries were arrested by the Guardia Civil last Sunday afternoon. Six illegal Spanish pickers were nabbed by the Guardia after a tip off from suspicious farmers close to the town of Planes near Alcoy. The forbidden fruit was found stashed in two cars in various plastic bags.

HAPPINESS IS A SPANISH HAMLET WANT to buy a village? Well look no further. In a bid to do something in the face of the crisis, town halls in Spain are offering abandoned villages and ghost towns for sale, at bargain prices if you have the time, money and energy to do them up. Unsurprisingly, the buyers are almost all foreigners, a third of whom are Brits. The Sunday People revealed last Sunday that one such adventurer is former ITV transmission controller Neil Christie, 61, who snapped up the tiny village of Arruñada, bordering Asturias and Galicia in the North West. The dad-of-two, originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, has to pinch himself sometimes when he thinks of the price he paid: 45,000 euros. Now he spends his day fixing up the detached property he and his Peruvian wife Rosa will soon call home. The house overlooks nearly nine acres of land which is now theirs. Back in Britain, they were living in a town house in Carlisle. Their new home was abandoned at least 27 years ago. “It’s not a decision for the faint-hearted.
The village was a ruin to start with. I had to bulldoze down the walls of the first house and rebuild them up again using the original stone”, says Christie. Many of Spain’s abandoned villages are so small they would barely be called hamlets in Britain. Typically they were deserted by
tenants who moved to towns and cities or more fertile areas for work. Now British bargain hunters are at the forefront of a takeover of the nation’s rural retreats. But lovers of sun, sea and sangria should realise few of them are near the Costas. Most of the properties are in rough but breathtaking ter-
rain closer to the Atlantic than the Med. The lack of mod cons is reflected in the price. The majority of the deserted villages are in the northern regions Asturias and Galicia, branded Green Spain by British travel agents, where the locals are incredibly welcoming and the food is fabulous. Prices range from £53,000 to £385,000. Barcelona-born Rafael and his business partner Pepe Rodil run the website www.aldeasabandonadas.com (Spanish for abandoned villages). Rafael added, “The average buyers we see are middle-class couples in their 50s who are buying now with the idea of moving here when they retire. Before, more people were buying villages to do up and turn into tourist concerns. Now we find 70 per cent want to come and live in them. Often the houses have been in their families for generations but they’ve fallen into disrepair. They either haven’t the money to do them up or they don’t want to because they see going back to the countryside that their fathers and grandfathers left as a backwards step.
High stakes for BULLRING TO BE BULLDOZERED kidney seller
A MOROCCAN woman has been arrested for trying to sell her 19 year old sister’s kidney. She had been advertising around the northern city of Soria, with an asking price of 400 thousand Euros. The 34 year old said she didn’t know that it was illegal to sell organs in Spain, and if found guilty, she faces a jail stretch of to 12 years. Meanwhile her sister could be deported, as she’s living illegally in Spain.
ONE of Orihuela City’s biggest eyesores, the old bullring, will be demolished this summer. The Plaza de Toros hasn’t been used for 27 years, and has been in a serious state of disrepair, with many parts of the concrete structure visibly crumbling. It’s not known what the site will be used for, once the bulldozers have done their work.
Spain this week LITTLE THINGS GO BRUSSELS bosses have given Spain more time to sort out its economy but there’s a price on their loan extension. Madrid politicians have until 2016 to slash the country’s deficit and to make the economic reforms ordered by Brussels. If they fail to deliver, they face a huge fine from the EU. Meanwhile latest figures released yesterday (Thursday), have confirmed that Spain continues to be in a double-dip recession with output continuing to fall. The annual inflation rate has gone up by 0.3 per cent in May, taking the figure to 1.8 per cent. The rate would have leapt up more, had it not been for lower fuel costs. SPANISH mortgage lending reached a rock-bottom low in March. Just over 16 thousand mortgages were approved for that month, which is a 34 per cent reduction on March 2012. It’s also the lowest monthly figure since the current mortgage measuring system started ten years ago. The gloom has also spread to property prices which have fallen by close to 7 per cent between March 2012 and March 2013. The experts are not predicting any improvement in the housing market for the rest of the year. Young drivers in Huelva in south-west Spain are to get free petrol, so long as they don’t drink and drive. THE city council will be giving away a 20 Euro petrol voucher, if a driver is tested four times at special checkpoints and found to have a zero alcohol reading during the breath test. Drivers will have to register with the council to get the points card, which will be taken away from anybody who has an alcohol level of above zero.

TOP boyband, One Direction, have been the talk of Spanish teenagers on their visit to the country. Last Friday’s evening train from Murcia to Madrid looked like a day-out from St.Trinian’s school, though with no sightings of Flash Harry…..or even band member Harry Styles! The carriages were packed with hundreds of excited girls travelling to see the group perform in Madrid on Saturday. The five guys, put together by Simon Cowell for the UK X-Factor three years ago, made the most of their time in the capita. They rubbed shoulders with the Real Madrid football team as well as having a kickabout and photos taken with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos. They then spent the night in one of Madrid’s best known nightclubs, before getting ready for their Saturday night sellout concert.

editor@thecourier.es COURIER POSTBAG: YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS
The Good Samaritans of 2013 ON Sunday May 12, I was travelling between Villa Martin and San Miguel when I found that I could not control the steering. My car rolled several times across a field before coming to rest over a steep bank. A gentleman who had witnessed the accident stopped and called the emergency services. As I managed to stand and put my head out of the window he urged me to remain still due to the precarious position the vehicle was in. Other cars had stopped and a
nurse clambered down to me and held my hand, keeping me calm, until assistance arrived. She then acted as my translator with the Paramedics - all my Spanish went out of the window. My two good Samaritans disappeared before I could thank them and I was taken away in the ambulance but without their help it is probable that I would have been seriously injured or worse. I cannot thank them enough for giving me such support and courage. PAMELA RUSSELL, San Miguel

In response to the recent letter from The Price Is Wrong of Rojales, why doesn't the pensioner who wrote the letter just subsidise his or her daughter and her family himself/herself? I would not wish to pay higher fares just to help subsidise families with children travelling at the peak holiday periods. Why can't those involved merely spend some of their tax credits and/or child allowance or earnings? If they really can't afford to spend a grand on a family holiday, then do the same as millions of others - go somewhere cheaper or go without and stay at home.
Your correspondent, who stated "as a pensioner who can travel to Manchester for £100 return for most of the year", should consider himself or herself very fortunate. Ryanair actually suspend flights from/to various UK airports from October to March, leaving would-be travellers to seek alternate flights and/or airports. I cannot believe the statement, “it's time Parliament forced them to balance things out for everyone.’’ What nonsense. It's all about market forces. ALAN PRICE, Los Narejos and Portsmouth

CAN you play? This was the question put by Carmen Verdu Garcia, Mayoress of Guardamar del Segura, to David Farrer, to the Gilbert and Sullivan Society as they both signed the handover documents. Guardamar had for 18 years been the cultural home of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. In recognition of all the help that the cultural authorities had given to them in providing facilities to put on G&S shows and concerts in the Casa de Cultura, they decided to donate their piano/keyboard and accessories to the town of Guardamar. Unlike the society, which is coming to an end, the keyboard will continue to provide musical entertainment and encouragement within the cultural and educational facilities of the town. This presentation followed the Society’s recent final show at which they donated a total of €3.000 to the charities AECC and HAH, bringing the overall total to €50,000 since 1995. ‘Ounce’ upon a time on the gateau plateau
ALL the excitement of the last few days has overshadowed the BIG event - achieving my target of reducing Mrs Blobby to something less than ‘clinically obese’. DONNA GEE set out in January to lose 16 kilos (35lbs) and raise £500 for the Crohn’s in Children Research Association (CICRA). That figure is about to hit £2,000, but what would computer programmed jargon know about accurately describing a successful if a little smug weight watcher? I’m woffling on because I’ve not had a good week. In fact I am still 3.3 kilos short of my target weight

1200-CARAT GOLD: MY CHARITY ANGELS
I’VE never been any good at expressing myself through a microphone so forgive me for using my column this week to express a special debt of gratitude.
For the past four months I have been trying to raise funds for a charity close to my heart…a cause dedicated to ending the suffering of youngsters like my granddaughter Daisy, who almost lost her life to Crohn’s Disease. My cunning plan was to try to lose two-and-a-half stone through a sponsored diet. It was hardly a Mission Impossible…indeed it was Mission Dare Not Fail, because I could hardly let Daisy down by continuing to resemble the Princess of Whales. In the 16 weeks I’ve been fighting the flab, I have lost all but half a stone of that 35lbs target, but it’s been tough going. I also made a mess of the sponsorship side because of my embarrassment when it comes to asking people for money. And because I was so naïve that I didn’t realise I should have recruited sponsors to back me BEFORE I started losing weight. The end result is that although my online fundraising stood at the start of this week at 25 per cent more than my original £500 target, I probably missed out on double that amount through my lack of fundraising skills. But CICRA, the Crohn’s in
A walk on the child side...participants prepare to step out in aid of CICRA Children Research Association, are about to get a big surprise, thanks to my amazing friends Dee Williams and Susan Reader and the unbelievable support of an expat community whose generosity knows no bounds. Susan, one of the Costa’s most prolific voluntary fundraisers, and Dee – who runs Bar Sofia in El Raso, decided to boost my own uninspiring efforts to fill CICRA’s coffers. I didn’t ask them to help…they formed their own Daisy chain and Ready for the off with my neighbours Marjory and Marie plated it with gold in the form of a Charity Walk and Fun walk and perhaps a dozen to number, with dozens more come along to the subse- thronging Sofia’s for the fashDay I had expected perhaps quent activities at Sofia’s on ion show and commercial mini market that followed. half a dozen sad souls to Sunday. There were five times that The Walk and Fun Day, plus take part in the short 2.5km
raffle and other ‘extras’, have already generated a staggering €1,200 plus…and the money is still coming in. The bottom line is that the £759.93 I have raised for CICRA in sponsorship and gift aid is about to rocket to more than £2,000 even if nothing more comes in before I complete my diet on June 30. Some €500 of this latest cash injection came from two sources….€200 from the now defunct El Raso Neighbourhood Watch, for which I thank Barbara Roebuck and Tony Bowhey in particular, and an unbelievable €300 collected personally by my neighbours Marie and Colin Whitfield. Ever-helpful and ever-willing, the golden hearted couple’s wad of sponsorship forms included the name of just about every soul on the urbanisation. As I write, my Just Giving charity page shows only the £759.93 contributed to CICRA by sponsors of my diet. Sunday’s jackpot will be added in the next few days but I doubt that will be the end of it… because the charitable efforts of the expat community seem to know no bounds. Just keep checking www.justgiving.com/donnagee and you’ll see what I mean...
My living hell - the agony of Crohn’s BY DAISY BECKMAN THE last nine months have been living hell for me. My Crohn’s has been horrific and I’ve been in and out of hospital many times. It all started when I went to Manchester Children’s Hospital and I was on 32 tablets a day and was rattling with drugs. I was doubled over in agony most of the time and was in desperate need of an operation to remove my extremely inflamed bowel. They did many scans and tests and found nothing. I had a nasal gastric tube placed which I hated and was fed through that and was not allowed to eat because I was vomiting when I did. My consultant did not think I required an operation and suggested most of my pain was psychological. This made me mad and upset me more than ever to think me being in pain most if not
all of the time was being completely ignored. I went to Alder Hay children’s hospital which was very on the ball and my new consultant Dr Auth was fantastic and got all my MRI scans, bariums and scopes done straight away . When I woke up from an anaesthetic I was told I required an operation to remove some bowels and that it would be pretty straight forward. My operation was planned for two months time.
I went to my outpatient’s appointment in a wheelchair as I was in that much pain and so weak that I could hardly walk. Dr Auth said I had to be admitted straight away so I went to ward E3 for the night. The next morning I was wheeled down to ultrasound and they found the unexpected. I had no clue what was going on but my surgeon was called to ultrasound and was very concerned. Then I was told in two hours time I would be operated on. I was panicking like mad so my nurse gave me some premed before theatre to calm me down and I was all drugged up and completely out of it . I don’t remember anything after that . I had had the biggest operation of my life lasting seven hours. I had an abscess stuck near my kidney which nearly killed me
and a stricture. I had lost loads of blood during the operation and needed a blood transfusion. I have had such a traumatic time and I just wanted to thank you all so much for doing this Walk for me it really does mean a lot. I wish I could be there to thank you all personally but I am so far behind with my studies that I really have no time for anything but schoolwork at present. You are all wonderful for supporting research which will hopefully make the sort of pain I have suffered a thing of the past. Your donations really do make a difference. To end I want to say a huge thank you to my grandma Donna for doing a sponsored slim to help CICRA and for making people more aware of the pain and suffering of children with Crohn’s through her column in The Courier.
A sad purry story that will all end happily... TEARS are pouring down my cheeks as I write this - tears of guilt over the fate of Greyham, the cat with an aversion to his own home. It’s nearly two weeks since I took the poor fella to Joe the Cat Man and his partner Rose (above) for rehoming. It was not that I wanted to part with Greyham the problem was his refusal to leave the home of my friends Claire and Les Michaels, where he had been camped for weeks. Because of his haranguing of their own nervous moggy, Honey, they were becoming increasingly desperate for Greyham (pictured here) to move out - so they had to either stop
feeding waifs and strays or turn their garden hose on the unwanted intruder. The only alternative was for me to lock him indoors 24 hours a day...or to find him a new home. And when I heard that one of Joe’s rescue pens had been vacated, in went Greyham, along with a sizeable donation to finance his keep while he waited for a new owner to come along. But I quickly realised I was giving away a wonderfully affectionate pet and for no valid reason. Fortunately, no-one has come for him - and the warmth of his welcomes each time I visit have convinced me that I simply cannot let him go. So when I get back from next week’s trip to the UK, he’ll be coming home to that 24/7 prison I mentioned. And I’ll never cell him short again...

TIBA ‘Reach Out’ for charity Recently TIBA (The International Business Association) launched an appeal amongst the members to help the charity REACH OUT, which is also the current year's sponsored charity of the organisation. Over the past few weeks, members of TIBA have gathered food, clothing and household goods, resulting in a full van load of goods being delivered to REACH OUT this week. Karen at NEW 2 YOU kindly supplied the van and members of TIBA helped to fill it with much of what had been collected. The empty van was soon filled and a delivery made to the charity. REACH OUT have now managed to extend their property (see address below) and the organisers were delighted with the unexpected delivery to help them in their quest. REACH OUT have a mission statement and that is 'We try to help anyone in need, irrespective of race, creed or status'. They do this by providing basic food, clothes, b e d d i n g , household items and furniture. They give support in every way they can to someone in need. Homeless people (often through no fault of their own) now know that they can go to REACH OUT everyday and receive a cooked breakfast and lunch. They can also
have a shower and a shave, and even wash their clothes in the washing machines provided. In an attempt to give these people back their pride and self-respect, REACH OUT also encourages people who attend the centre to carry out work. The recently extended premises have been fitted out by these helpers. Showers have been fitted and areas tiled. A new kitchen has been fitted, from which one of the homeless helpers cooks up the breakfasts and lunches. Obviously the new premises incurred a higher rent and several members of TIBA have committed to a set donation towards this every month. Local businesses, or indeed anyone, can help by donating a sum every month, even 5 euros helps. Why not pop in and see just what a great job the organisers of REACH OUT do on a daily basis? Perhaps you could help at the centre.
For families, REACH OUT offer food parcels once a week, and they try to tailor the parcels as much as possible to individual needs, taking into account the size of the family etc. For the food packs, REACH OUT are delighted to receive donations of dried, tinned or preserved foods, rice, pasta, flour. Also eggs, cooking oil, UHT milk, p r o c e s s e d cheese, lentils, beans, chickpeas, tinned meats or fish, biscuits, etc. They also need baby foods, nappies, wipes, toiletries, toilet rolls and cleaning material. People in need are also offered clothes, bedding, towels, household items and even furniture if needed when these are
available. The charity also provides food for the homeless to take away, which of course needs to be somewhat different to the usual food parcels as these people do not normally have access to cooking facilities. In addition to all of the above, and by now you are probably wondering just what else these wonderful people can provide, they also offer counselling (although presently only in English) to the many needy people who cross their door. Last year the organisers had a vision and that was to have much larger premises, where they could have a shop and a cafe with a social area in the front, lots of storage and workshops in the back, so that their friends if they so wished, could help with repairing furniture for sale etc. They have now achieved this goal with the help of TIBA and the many people who donate
either money, food, or any of the goods mentioned above. TIBA will continue to help
with donations and hopefully, you, the reader, will be able to help in some way.

FLAMING MARRIAGE!
I enjoy dribbling a sachet of tomato ketchup over my mouth and chin, while sitting in cafes and then screaming: 'There's a piranha in my sardine sandwich!' I've just made that up. I hate sardines. I also grow faint in the presence of celery. Now you know everything about me. 'What's to know?' asked Mrs S. 'I suspected you were odd from the very start of our relationship. But by the time we married, I was too much in love to have you sectioned.' Mrs S gazed both dreamily and frustratingly into the middle distance as if she were trying to recapture a wondrous time that had never existed. She went on: 'I know I vowed to have and to hold you for better or for worse, but the minister said nothing about the ABSOLUTE worst.' I shook my head in protest but not too ferociously, because I was still dizzy after sampling next door's initial attempt at home brewing. 'But it was YOU who almost
ruined our wedding day!' I cried. 'It wasn't MY veil that started to smoulder when I failed to remove the fag from between my lips as I said, "I do".' 'I was nervous!' countered Mrs S. 'And you were so bad-tempered about what happened. Even the firemen saw the funny side eventually.' Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that there is only one person I have known longer than Mrs S. And, that is my best pal Eric the dentist. Our friendship started when we were mere tots and would accompany our respective mothers to the local wash house (those were the days before launderettes). While the mums scrubbed and ironed the families' clothes, Eric and I would sit on the floor giggling, dribbling and chucking bits of carbolic soap at each other. Ee bah gum, I knew Eric the dentist before he had teeth.
'And I'M too long in the tooth to listen to any more of this r u b bish,' grumbled Mrs S. 'I'm off to bingo in a minute with MY best friend Phyllis, so unless there's any point to this vocal outpouring of your mishmash of memories, I'm
going upstairs to put on my lippy.' I gave her a head start just in case she lashed out with her back foot as I followed her up the stairs. 'Did you know,' I said, popping my head around the bathroom
door, 'that Eric the dentist and I were so close at school that we were known as The Three Musketeers.' I went back downstairs pretty swiftly just in case Mrs S lashed out with her front foot as she followed me. 'Okay, okay,' she said, popping her head around the living room door. 'At the risk of missing the first bingo game and with the growing realisation that I might regret asking you this . . . If there were only the two of you, why The THREE Musketeers?' I shrugged. 'Whoever's heard of The Two Musketeers? It just doesn't sound right.' As Mrs S stormed from the house I heard her mutter: 'Those who live by the sword shall be clobbered with a frying pan by those who don't.' Now, I'm not one to make sweeping assumptions but the thought did cross my mind that Mrs S was typical of every woman throughout the world.
The one day I decided not to visit the pub, she chose to go out to bingo rather than stay in with her devoted husband. A case of 'House!' over home, one might say. I heard Mrs S shout through the letterbox: 'The only reason you're not in the pub is that it is shut for flood repairs after Daft Barry forgot to turn off the tap in the gents.' I felt myself getting hot and bothered, as yet again Mrs S demonstrated that she knew everything that was going on in my life. My feeling of helpless frustration frightened me. I was so under the influence of old American television shows that I feared one day I would lose all control, turn green, burst my shirt and go Hulking through the streets of Greater Manchester. Incredible, eh? I decided I must calm down. I shut my eyes and counted slowly to 10. But then I got all confused and shouted out to an otherwise empty house: 'Coming ready or not!'

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH Spanish 73
contra – against; de – of, from; desde – from, since; en – in, on, into; entre – between, among; hacia – toward; hasta – Hola, y bienvenidos a otra semana de español. Espero until; para – for, in order to, to; por – for, by, through; según que hayáis pasado una muy buena semana y tenéis – according to; sin – without; sobre – over, above; tras – after. muchas ganas de aprender más esta semana. Primero las respuestas de la semana pasada: would you eat the tortillas? - ¿comerías las tortillas?, I would tell him tomorrow – yo le diría mañana, the children would not play with this toy – los niños no jugarían con este juguete, I would go out but it is raining – saldría pero está lloviendo, Juan would eat a paella because he is hungry – Juan comería una paella porque tiene hambre, I would sleep but I am not tired – dormiría pero no estoy cansado/a, he probably went into the house – él entraría en la casa, would you learn to play the guitar? - ¿aprenderías a tocar la guitarra?, we would like to visit England next year – nos gustaría visitar inglaterra el año que viene. This week we will leave verbs again and have a bit of a rest from them as they can get confusing and you need to make sure your knowledge of them is up to standard before moving on, however there is still plenty to learn in Spanish, so this week we will lern some useful prepositions. A preposition is used to indicate the relationship between words, the preposition goes before other words (as in the ´pre – position´). They are connectors linking a noun, pronoun or a phrase to other words in a phrase or sentence. Spanish prepositions can be difficult for English speakers and they need to be learnt gradually. We have already learned the difference between por and para and how which one that is used can change completely the meaning of a sentence, if you are in any doubt or would like to revise this lesson you will find it online at www.thecourier.es, click on my name and lessons 28 and 29. We will start with one word, or simple prepositions: a – to, at; ante – before; in the presence of; bajo – under; con – with;
I will give you some translations to do after each section and then more at the end to check your knowledge, translate into Spanish: we are going to do this work between you and me, the students are in the school (el colegio), John has sent a card (una tarjeta) from London, I do not want to go without you. Compound prepositions are made up of more than one word, some you may already know but here is a list of some of the most commonly used ones: in favour of – a favor de, from – a partir de, walking – a pie, on time – a tiempo, through – a través de, besides – además de, before – antes de, near – cerca de, from time to time – de vez en cuando, under/beneath – debajo de, in front of – delante de, within/inside(of) – dentro de, of course – desde luego, after - después de, behind – detrás de, in fact – en efecto, instead of – en vez de, above/on top of – encima de, in front of – enfrente de, in front of – frente a, outside of – fuera de, far from – lejos de. Here are some translations for you using the above prepositions: The shops are far from my house, this meeting ends within an hour, my car is outside the garage, what is there near to your house?, do you finish your work on time? Sometimes the same word will have a different meaning depending on the context of the sentence or phrase, for example: voy a la tienda a las nueve – I am going to the shop at nine o´clock. We learnt about the personal a in a previous lesson, that is when we are talking about specific people, however the pre-
position a is different. It is used to indicate movement, e.g. I prefer to go on foot – prefiero ir a pie. There are also certain verbs that need the prepostion a some of which we have already learnt, such as ir and others we will learn. A preposition may join with other parts of speech such as: a noun + a preposition (often de or para) + another noun may modify a noun or a pronoun, this resulting phrase functions as an adjective, of course in English the noun alone can stand as an adjective,e.g:la bandeja de cerámica – the ceramic tray, un parque para niños – a childrens park. A preposition + a noun modifies a verb, the result is called an adverbial expression: conduce sin cuidado – he drives carelessly (without care), trabajo con paciencia – I work patiently (with patience) Certain prepositions followed by an infinitive are equivalent to the present participle (-ing form) in English, the Spanish infinitive needs to be used after the prepositions: Al regresar a londres – upon returning to London, ¿cómo entras al cine sin pagar? - how do you go into the cinema without paying? The following prepositions are used in front of infinitives in this way: al – upon, antes de – before, con – with, de – of, después de – after, en lugar de – instead of, en vez de – instead of, hasta – until, sin – without. I will leave you this week with a few more translations, and we will carry on next week with some more about prepositions: translate the following: instead of sugar the recipe says honey, from time to time I run ten kilometers, after entering the living room you can sit on the sofa, I am going to close the window without making a noise, the supermarket is far from the church. Have a great week, see you online or in print next week.

HOW MY DOGS ENJOY A SPANISH STROLL Last week I wrote about the inspirational loy- been. A big pull of moving to Spain was knowing that our dogs would have a better quality of life and that is certainly alty that dogs show us on a daily basis. This loyalty is not always shared by humans. Only the other day, I heard about a Spanish dog that was thrown out of a car window. The poor animal then ran after the vehicle, trying to reunite himself with his selfish, despicable owners. Some humans really do not deserve to be within a square mile of a dog! The amount of requests I get sent by email each day, about abandoned dogs is massive and chatting to a vet last week, they told me that a couple brought in two cats to be put to sleep because they were going back to their native country. Luckily the vet refused and kept the two cats! Loyalty is a very important quality. It is a trait I look for most in humans. It is a trait I never have to search for though in dogs. When I walk my six dogs, I feel honoured every day, that they would follow me to the ends of the earth. They are all off lead and wherever I walk, they follow. When I sit and rest, they do the same. I never take these moments for granted, never. Now that we live in Spain, walking the dogs in peace and quiet is something I have always dreamed of. I often take a rest and sit on a piece of rock and these moments that I share with my dogs that I value so much. We sit there and enjoy silent, calm energy, in just the way nature intended. We have the mountains either side of us and glorious tracks to walk down and we are happier now than we ever have
proving to be the case. Back in London, our walks were always hampered by shocking weather, noisy car horns and people pointing. Now when we walk, the only thing we look at is nature itself. Each walk now is like a meditation, as we explore the countryside and I don’t think I have seen so many beautiful butterflies in my entire life. Somedays I feel like pinching myself on these walks, such is our enjoyment. Billy, my German Shepherd is so expressive. I know when he is happy and I also know when he is not. He absolutely adores his new Spanish life. I have never seen him so content and so happy. Many people back in the UK, thought us simply mad for making the big move due to one of the worst recessions Europe has ever seen. Our decision was never based around money. No, we do not have a lot, but life is not all about chasing the pound. It is also about a certain amount of quality. As long as we have a roof over our heads and food for us all, then that is what counts. I couldn’t give a damn about what car I drive or if I’m wearing the very latest fashions. What I have realised is, to learn from my dogs. For dogs, the only important factors are: - Are we together? Are we safe? Do we have enough food? They do not want for anything else and because of their important teachings, neither of us do.

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON NEW LEGISLATION FOR PAYING FINES On March 4th this year, new legislation governing the payment of fines for traffic offences was introduced in Spain. According to the new law, drafted and passed by the Spanish DirectorateGeneral of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico) and the Ministry of the Interior, the payment of traffic fines in cash will no longer be accepted, and only payment by debit or credit card will be allowed. The authorities have cited security and economic efficiency as the reasons behind their decision due to the fact that once this new measure has been introduced, the risks and expenses involved with transporting money, will no longer exist. According to the DGT, the measure will only apply to the payment of fines. All the other administrative operations carried out at Provincial Traffic Headquarters, such as processing or renewing a driving licence, can still be paid for in cash. In order to make the payment, drivers must access the DGT webpage, www.dgt.es, or call the number 060. Although Provincial Headquarters will no longer accept payments in cash, drivers can still pay their fines in cash at any post office or Banco Santander branch. In this case, drivers will still be required to provide and attach the fine reference number.

MAKING THE MOST OF LIFE
Summer is just around the corner and once again families are arranging days out and holidays together, but is there for us single folk? Whether you have children or not, this time of year can be difficult if there is no significant other. We seem to have people everywhere reminding us that there is no one to hold hands with; or nobody to snuggle up to; or no one to help with the unpacking at the end of a trip. I, for one, am quite happy to be single. There is no pressure on me to try and please anyone and no one is trying to please me. I can come and go as I please, but my only concern is my 5 year old son and he almost always does as he´s asked! But, I do realise some people want to be in a relationship and I´ve made no secret of my use of internet dating sites to try and meet people. In fact, I can´t remember the last time I met someone in a more traditional way, I guess the guy who gave me his number in the Chasers childrens play area would be it for all the time I have been in Spain. Any other male I met here was someone who came from an online chat. This has worked out reasonably well at times, but I’ve had my shares of disaster as well. I´m not saying that I will never do it again. I’m sure I’ll go back onto the computer when I decide that I want to share part of my life with somebody, but it won’t be any time soon! To be fair, I’ve met some great people on these dating sites, some of whom have become friends that I still chat to, or occasionally meet up to have a drink. They help me out with my Spanish and I help them if they need anything in English. They didn´t turn out to be the love of my life but, have become great friends. I did quite a bit of non-
traditional dating, even before I came to Spain, meeting people through dating sites. I even put an ad in one paper in my local area, which was a big mistake! There was no way to see the people that were meeting up with nor any chance to get to know them beforehand, but this was in the early 90s, before the wonderful internet had really got going!
When I came to live in Spain I signed up for a dating site and off I went. I met guys from Madrid, Barcelona and the Costa del Sol, as well as some closer to home. I ended up with several cheap holidays in Spain (after the men had come to visit me first and I could tell they were ok). I spent
several nice holidays in Mijas, and a long weekend in Barcelona. The guy there (who is friends with me on Facebook, and is now in a relationship with a young daughter), had a flat near La Ramblas and the Metro. My days were spent sight-seeing, whilst he was at work, and then at night we chilled out at the many Bohemian bars in the city. This is a part of my life that was carefree, as I had the time to be young and explore and certainly that I made the most of it. The relationships turned into friendships and I can honestly say that at least have lived and not merely survived! I am well aware of people who frown on internet dating even now. In the 21st century, there are those who feel it is somehow not a proper way to meet the love of your life, but there are many thousands of happy couples who would disagree. There are, of course guidelines that should be followed when chatting online or arranging to meet someone, but as long as you stay safe where´s the harm? The sites tell you how to stay secure, but who´s to say that if I met someone through work or in a bar that they aren´t going to be crazy? At the end of the day, life is about making choices and I chose to live it. I do not regret one meeting that I had or any failed relationship. They all helped to make me the person that I am today. I will be lying on my bed when the time comes to say goodbye with perhaps a few regrets, but there will be far more positive thoughts drifting around my head. It is said you may regret what you did, but it´s worse to regret what you didn´t do. In the words of the current big hit song by Passenger: ´Life´s for the living so live it´

I don’t like some of the rhetoric that’s been spewing out of various UK mouths after the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich. This is the time for all decent political parties to come together and pledge support for the massive majority of law abiding and decent-living Muslims in Britain. The goose-stepping verbal diarrhoea of unelectable right wingers has to be countered with rational discussion mixed in with action. This action has to come from both the politicians and the Muslim community. Home Secretary, Theresa May, says that too many vulnerable young people are being exposed to radical clerics, who just preach hate against everybody. What is she going to do about it? Yes, you have to balance the issue of free speech, but she is right to push for a quick introduction of a Communications Data Bill, which would allow police to swoop on people who are spreading hate through the internet, but what about the mosques and other venues? Meanwhile, Muslim parents have an even bigger role to play. They’ve
TIME UP FOR THE CRAZY CLERICS
got to ask questions of their children (no matter how old they are) over what they understand as being right and wrong. And also to point out that true followers of the Muslim faith don’t go down the road of hate that these mainly young people are being brain-washed into. It beggars belief
that more has not been done over the last decade to stop the crazy clerics spouting hate to vulnerable people. For allowing this to happen, the UK politicians
and Muslims should together hang their heads in shame. There’s nothing worse for a political party leader than to have a predecessor rattling the cage when they’re trying to run the show themselves. Just ask all those who led the Tories in Britain, after Mrs.Thatcher was booted out back in 1990. Here in Spain, we have a variation on a theme. The ex-Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar has totally dismantled the rattled cage and has made it pretty obvious that he wouldn’t mind the job again, which means dumping on his personally anointed suc-
q
cessor, Mariano Rajoy. Aznar was shabbily treated by the voters in 2004, who in the wake of the Madrid bombings, panicked and voted in the PSOE, because of Aznar’s strong stance against Al Qaeda. Before that, he was popular as the boom times rolled nicely along for Spain. Unless I’m totally mistaken, there’s no way that Aznar would have floated the idea of a comeback without the backing of senior figures within the Partido Popular. Rajoy’s constant problem seems to be the ability to connect with the voters, something that Aznar is skilled at. The ex-PM has suggested radical tax cuts to boost the economy, which in his view would cut the terrible unemployment figures. Rajoy’s cabinet colleagues have predictably rallied
around him, but how many times have we seen that charade before? They’ll knife him in self-interest at the first opportunity. Do you remember all the cabinet friends smiling in front of the TV cameras 23 years ago in support of Margaret Thatcher? PP strategists will also know that the PSOE is disliked and not trusted, with their leader Alfredo Rubalcaba as boring as the charisma-free Rajoy. So, what better time than over the next twelve months, than to engineer a coup, knowing that the next election would still be the best part of three years away? Perhaps the excuse might be some of the recent accusations concerning Rajoy over bungs and PP Swiss bank accounts? Watch this space!

together in a large bowl, then put a few spoonfuls aside. Slice halfway into the thickest part of each breast and open it up like a book. Flatten down slightly with your hand, then toss in the bowlful of marinade to coat. Chill for as little, or as long, as you have time to. 2. Barbecue the chicken for about 10 mins until completely cooked through, turning so it doesn't burn but is nicely charred and sticky. Cook the bacon at the same time until crisp, if using, and toast the buns. Assemble the burgers with lettuce, slices of tomato, onion and the reserved sauce on the side for dolloping on top.
SQUID, CHICKPEA AND CHORIZO SALAD Ingredients 4 red peppers 2 x 400g cans chickpea , rinsed and drained huge bunch parsley , roughly chopped 1 red chilli , deseeded and chopped 2 garlic cloves , finely chopped 100ml olive oil 600g cleaned squid , sliced into rings, tentacles kept whole 200g cooking chorizo , cut into chickpea-size chunks juice and zest 1 large lemon
Method
1. Cook the peppers whole under a grill, on a barbecue or griddle, until completely charred. Place the peppers in a bowl, cover with a plate until cool enough to handle, then peel, deseed and finely slice. In a large bowl mix the peppers and any juices with the chickpeas, parsley, chilli and garlic. Set aside. 2. Heat a large frying pan until smoking. Working quickly and carefully, add a splash of oil to the pan, then the squid. Stirfry for about 30 secs. Scatter the chorizo over the squid, continue to cook for 30 secs more, then tip into the bowl with the peppers. Season everything with salt and pepper, then dress with the remaining oil, lemon juice and lemon zest. Mix together, pile onto a platter and let everyone help themselves.
PORK SATAY Ingredients 400g lean pork steaks , cut into strips 1 tbsp light soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil FOR THE SAUCE 2 tbsp coconut cream 1 tbsp red Thai curry paste 1 tsp fish sauce 1 tbsp palm sugar 4 tbsp tamarind paste 140g roasted peanuts , finely chopped 100ml coconut milk
Method
1. Soak 12 bamboo skewers in water while marinating the
meat. Mix the meat with the soy sauce and sesame oil, and place in the fridge for at least 30 mins or up to 24 hrs. 2. In a saucepan, combine coconut cream and red curry paste, then cook for 5 mins on a low heat. Add the fish sauce, palm sugar, tamarind paste and chopped peanuts, cook for a further 5 mins, then add the coconut milk. 3. Heat the grill to high, thread marinated meat onto the soaked skewers and place on a baking tray. Grill for 5 mins on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Serve immediately with the satay dipping sauce.
GRILLED CHCIKEN WITH LEMON AND THYME Ingredients 4 skinless chicken breasts 1 lemon , grated zest and juice 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil , plus extra for drizzling 2 garlic cloves , crushed Âź tsp dried thyme houmous , kalamata, olives and lemon wedges, to serve
Method
1. Mix the chicken breasts with the lemon zest, 2 tbsp lemon juice, the olive oil, garlic and thyme. 2. Season, then cook on a heated griddle or on a barbecue for 4-5 mins each side. Serve the chicken with a generous dollop of houmous, a drizzle of olive oil, plus the olives and lemon wedges.
PRAWN BRUSCHETTA SKEWERS Ingredients 200g cooked large prawns (you want about 16), defrosted if frozen Âź ciabatta , focaccia or a baguette loaf, cut into cubes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove , finely sliced 1 lemon , halved handful parsley leaves, roughly chopped 8 skewers
Method
1. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 1 hr before using. If the skewers are really long, use kitchen scissors to halve. On each skewer, thread the tail of the prawn, then a cube of bread, then the top of the prawn so the prawn loops the bread. If the prawns aren't big enough, just alternate prawns and bread, so each skewer has 2 of each. Drizzle with olive oil and scatter with garlic. The skewers can now be kept in the fridge for several hrs. 2. Cook over the hot coals until the bread is toasted. While still on the barbecue, squeeze over the lemon. Then remove, season, drizzle with a bit more oil and scatter with
parsley. Arrange on a plate or in a small jar sticking up, with a glass of something light, cold and very fizzy.
STICKIEST-EVER BBQ RIBS WITH CHIVE DIP Ingredients 2 racks baby back pork ribs 2 cans cola 2 tsp toasted sesame seeds (optional) FOR THE SAUCE 8 tbsp tomato ketchup 8 tbsp soft brown sugar 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tsp paprika FOR THE CHIVE DIP 300ml pot half-fat soured cream 2 tbsp salad cream small bunch chive , snipped 6 spring onions , sliced
Method 1.Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and snugly fit the ribs into a roasting tin. Pour over the cola and enough water to cover the ribs, then cover the tin tightly with foil. Roast for 23 hrs, turning halfway through, until the ribs are really tender but not falling apart. 2. Meanwhile, put all the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. Gently heat, then bubble for about 2 mins, stirring. 3. When the ribs are done, carefully lift each out of the tin and sit on kitchen paper to dry. Tip away the liquid and wipe out the tin. Put the dry ribs back in the tin and coat all over with the sticky sauce. Cover and chill for at least 1 hr to marinate, but better still up to 24 hrs. Can be frozen at this stage. 4. Mix the dip ingredients together and chill until ready to serve. 5. Heat the barbecue and wait for the flames to die down, or heat oven to 220C/200C/gas 7. Add the ribs (in a roasting tin, if using the oven) and cook for 20 mins, turning occasionally, and basting often with remaining sauce. When ribs are sticky, hot through and crisping on the outside, slice to serve. Scatter with sesame seeds, if you like, and plate up with any remaining sticky sauce, warmed, and the chive dip.

Richard moved to Spain seven years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. ADVICE: Maureen was having problems with her printer ADVICE: Peter was having problems accessing website not accepting cartridges using Google Chrome
Q
Hello Richard, I have an HP Photosmart C3100 printer which, to date, gave me no problems. However I have just tried to change an ink cartridge and the printer 'error' light is flashing and it won't work. Initially I used (HP originals for C3100) cartridge number 342 for colour and 336 for black. I read in a computer magazine some time ago about 'more cost-effective', 'larger quantity' cartridges which were supposed to be better value. I subsequently bought 2 of (all HP originals) colour cartridge no. 343 and 2 off no. 344. These are identical in size to the original 342, but when I install them, although the carriage moves back, the printer does not work - usually it automatically does a print test on installation of new cartridge - but it's now just static. I also bought 2 off HP black cartridge no. 339 only to find they didn't fit! Can you please advise why the 'bigger ink content' colour cartridges won't install and, if they are not compatible at all, whether I can somehow sell on or exchange all 6 cartridges? I look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your assistance. Regards Maureen
A
Hi Maureen the physically dimensions of the extra-large capacity cartridges are the same as the normal capacity cartridges, they just have more ink inside them. If your printer is refusing to move the carriage is probably due to a problem with the ink cartridges, have you tried looking in the printer settings on your computer? You don’t mention which operating system you are using but you should be able to right hand click the printer in question from the control panel and then choose printer properties and then printer preferences, most printers have maintenance troubleshooting tools there to identify what the printer thinks is the problem. Let me know if you get stuck.
Hi Richard, I have used Chrome now for several years without any problems. However I now do have one problem as follows - I cannot log into my e-mail account in outlook.com I get an error screen saying - server cannot be found because DNS lookup failed. ERROR 105 (NET::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED) I have followed the Chrome suggestions on the error page but none of the 'fixes' work. This is the only site where I get this problem. However I can log into my email account in outlook.com by using Firefox instead of Chrome. No problem at all, no mention of DNS lookup failure. I appears to be a problem in Chrome, which in a bit of a pain, having to switch from one to the other. I could make Firefox my preferred program but I do not think it is as comprehensive as Chrome. Am I doing something wrong or is this a known problem? As always you help will be most appreciated, Peter
Q
Hi Peter, that sounds like a strange one, DNS is the service that converts website domain names (like outlook.com) into IP addresses (the numbers that Internet connected computers use to identify each other. The reason it sounds strange is because DNS is handled usually at a computer level (i.e. if DNS is broken it should be broken for everything on your computer, and therefore Firefox shouldn’t work either). The only thing that I can think of is that you have managed to get some sort of proxy server turned on inside Chrome, you can check by going to Settings > Advanced Settings in Chrome and clicking on the “change proxy settings” in the network section, click on “LAN settings” and ensure that none of the check boxes are ticked. Let me know how you get on.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternately why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.
Hi Richard, need some advice, about 4 days ago my Yahoo email account started requesting that I have to sign in every time I open my email. The box is ticked to stay connected. I have looked for info on this subject but nothing works. It’s the same with both my email addresses. I use Internet Explorer, I have tried other browsers with the same result. I am also having problems with internet explorer, messages, Internet has stopped working or not responding. Look forward to your suggestions, regards Phil
Q A
Hi Phil, Yahoo keeps your login details stored in a cookie on your computer and uses this information to automatically log you in each time. I suspect that someone or something is deleting this (and probably all of your other cookies) regularly and therefore causing the problem. You need to check your browser settings to ensure that it’s not automatically deleting cookies when you close the browser, check any anti-spyware or security software that might be "protecting" your computer by deleting your cookies. Hope that helps.

Ten keys to healthy eating IN a time of fast food, dinner-to-go and Pizza hot-lines it becomes more and more crucial for people to remember healthy eating in order to stay active, feel good and maintain a healthy weight. For those that already chronically feel sick, fatigued and overweight it is important to review these keys to healthy eating in order to change back to a healthier lifestyle.
1. Eat Green
Green vegetables have a huge amount of minerals and dietary fibre in them. The minerals are essential to your health, wellbeing and fighting sickness. Dietary fibre is like the magic pill when it comes to keeping your colon healthy and working efficiently. Greens that are good to eat are spinach leaves, broccoli, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, fresh wheat grass and collards.
2. Get Moving
Start with a very small amount but do it continually to build up a habit. When the habit is there you can increase the amount of exercise you are doing. For weight loss the slow increase over time will be more beneficial than a long workout over only a short time period. Exercise has been proven to work as a hunger depressant. A few minutes of walking before dinner also helps in keeping the portion size down.
3. Laugh and Be Social
weight loss. Therefore, make sure you are getting your recommended eight cups a day.
5. Get Enough Sleep
Most people need about seven to eight hours of sleep a night. When losing weight and going through physical changes you will be needing more sleep. Not getting enough sleep will lead to fatigue and a craving for high energy foods to keep you going through the day. When you notice fatigue, try a power nap of maximum 30minutes instead of a candy bar.
6. Eat Fresh
Everything that comes in cans, bags, boxes, bottles and so on is processed food and has already lost a large amount of its minerals and vitamins. It might have the same calories as it did fresh, but the quality has degraded. M a k e sure
When you eat with others you can focus more of your attention on the conversations and the interaction that is taking place. You do not have to rely solely on your food to make you happy. Also, laughing is good for the soul. It defeats stress and works against depression, two major reasons why people overeat and turn to food as their comforter.
4. Drink Water
ARE FATS AND OILS GOOD FOR YOU? DR MACHI MANNU’S ADVICE CLINIC Email your questions and comments to contact@medb.es that is extremely high in saturated fat in the form of whale blubber. And yet they have the lowest worldwide occurrence of coronary heart disease. Saturated fats are essential for the production of hormones. They also provide a cushion for our organs. The brain especially requires fat to cushion its delicate parts, and is made up of 60% fat. Unsaturated fats have an incomplete structure, and this makes them break down easily into toxic forms when heated. Vegetable oils are mostly unsaturated such as – corn, sunflower, safflower and canola oils. Vegetable oils are extremely high in Omega-6 fatty acids. And Omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation. Omega-6 is essential for our health, but we receive too much of it in our diet. Normally we maintain a balance between Omega-6 which causes inflammation and Omega-3 which is anti-inflammatory. This balance should be a ratio of 1:1. Because we get so much Omega-6 in our diet, the ratio of Omega 6: Omega-3 is now between 25 to 1 and 40 to 1. This tips the scales in favour of inflammation. Omega-3 is found in flax seed and walnut oils. Omega-6 vegetable oils are cheap and
7. Avoid Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils
More and more people are picking up on this. Hydrogenated vegetable oils have been linked to many diseases lately. They are being used in pastry to extend its shelf life. Therefore, always check the ingredients before buying pastries and other baked goods.
8. Choose Whole Wheat Instead of White Flour
The diet experts are screaming it at you all the time. Avoid the white flour. A grain consists of its shell, the seed and a starch pocket. In the process of producing flour the grain is stripped off the seed, which is fatty and would make the flour turn bad in short time. For white flour the shell is also taken away, leaving mainly the starch. In whole-wheat flour the shell is left with the starch providing dietary fibre, minerals and vitamins. If you want to use whole-wheat flour for baking add about 10% more water to the dough. If you want to compromise use 2/3 whole-wheat flour and 1/3 white flour.
9. Say 'No' to Sugar
Somehow we forget this lot during our busy lifestyles. If you don't drink enough your body actually starts to store water, which will lead to weight gain and will counteract
When we hear of fats and oils, our minds race through health problems we have come to associate with them. Such as weight gain, high blood cholesterol, heart disease etc. But have we been misled? Fats and Oils are chemically the same. But fats are solid while oils are liquid at room temperature. There are 3 categories of fats and oils: saturated, unsaturated and hydrogenated or trans-fats. Saturated fats are regarded as very stable. They have no gap in their structure. And this stops them from going rancid or switching to other kinds of unhealthy fat when heated to high temperatures. They do not break down under heat like other kinds of fats. This makes saturated fats the best kind of fats to eat and cook with. Saturated fats are found in eggs, butter and meat. Saturated fats however have been wrongfully blamed for the rising incidence of obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol. Even though there is no supporting clinical or research evidence. What is clear is that about 100 years ago when our diet was high in saturated fats, obesity was uncommon, and heart diseases were unheard of. The Inuit people of Alaska have a diet
you get enough fresh food in your diet to fuel your body with all the nutrients it needs. Always have fresh fruit in the house, keep fresh vegetables in your refrigerator and if you can afford it buy your fresh produce in the organic section. Also, a farmers' market is usually the better choice than a big store.
used widely in restaurants and also by processed food makers. The cheap breakfast that seems quite appealing here in the Costas is likely worsening your health. Olive oil is also unsaturated oil, but contains Omega-9 fatty acids, which is not harmful to health. Extra virgin olive oil is good for salads. However it is unstable and breaks down into harmful by-products when heated. Trans-fats are the most harmful kinds of fat. They are made through a process called hydrogenation. The process involves heating vegetable oils to extremely high temperatures until they turn into solid trans-fats. This damages the structure of the oils. This is how margarine is made. Trans-fats contain inflammatory toxins and have been linked to many chronic disorders such as: heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol etc. Avoid using vegetable oils for cooking. Coconut or flax seed oils are healthier alternatives. Olive oil is good for salads, but should not be subjected to high heat. Margarine, even though advertised as healthy, damages your health. Butter is certainly a better alternative. However do not consume too much of saturated fats.
White sugar is so refined that it does not have any vitamins or minerals left. Actually, when white sugar is digested it takes those minerals from the body that it needs to be processed. Sugar has an addictive effect on the body. Some people may have mild symptoms of dizziness, headache and sweating when stopping to consume sugar.
10. Exchange Bad Eating Habits with Good Ones
Changing to healthy eating is about exchanging bad eating habits with good ones. This is the important thing to keep in mind when pursuing weight loss and health improvement. Take time to think about bad eating habits that you have and instead of ending them, exchange them for good ones. Once you have that good eating habit implemented move on to the next bad habit you have and keep continuing on this path of permanent health.

CUTTING THE PAIN OF SHINGLES Q
I have shingles, and until now have felt very little pain from it. Lately I’ve been having more frequent attacks, and the pain has become unbearable. My doctor has offered pain killers and steroids but they are not helpful. I will appreciate your advice.
A
Shingles is a disease triggered by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It usually affects the nerves. Normally it is accompanied by pain and small skin blisters which form directly over the nerve involved. The nerves mostly affected are those that supply the face and the thoracic area – the chest and mid-back. Occasionally the nerves of the lower back are also affected. Younger people tend to suffer less from shingles, and symptoms typically disappear in 3 to 4 weeks. Being older and developing shingles can be a continuous nightmare. For many people the pain and extreme sensitivity never ends even after the blisters disappear. Conventional hospital therapy includes the use of steroids, pain killers and tranquillizers, and these are not successful. Other therapies that have offered little comfort include - applying hot and cold packs, acupuncture, and TENS. An effective therapy for shingles is the application to the skin of a cream containing an extract of cayenne pepper – capsaicin. A number of clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness. In one study, 12 patients applied a cream containing .025% capsaicin locally to the painful area of the skin. This was done 5 times daily for a week, and then 3 times daily for an additional 3 weeks. At the end of the 4 week period, 25% reported the pain was completely abolished, and another 50% had gained substantial relief. What makes the study even more significant is that the patients had been experiencing shingles pain for an average of over
2 years previously. I manage shingles by combining capsaicin cream with an immune system enhancing program.
Q
I am always having abdominal discomfort such as flatulence and my abdomen feels swollen all the time. Recently I started having acid reflux for which I was prescribed omeprazole, but it only helps a bit. I actually feel nauseous after taking it. Please help.
A
Lately I have come across a number of people with similar symptoms to yours. There are many factors that can give rise to the symptoms you are experiencing. However your diet is the most likely cause. We are all aware of coeliac disease, a disorder that occurs when people are extremely sensitive to the gliadin component of gluten. However the vast majority of people have a minor, near symptomless gliadin sensitivity. Gliadin is found mostly in grains such as wheat, rye millet and corn. However it is found in large amounts in wheat. If your problem is due to wheat, then your best bet will be to stop eating it and see how you fare. This is of course after other likely causes of your condition such as infection have been ruled out. Another common cause of abdominal discomfort is bacteria
dysbiosis. This condition occurs when there is an imbalance of bacteria in the stomach. It is the healthy bacteria in the stomach that determines our state of abdominal health. These beneficial microbes include bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidus. These ‘good bacteria’ make up part of our immune system because they suppress the growth of harmful bacteria that also thrive in our stomach and gut. In addition the ‘good bacteria’ helps us digest food. The acid in the stomach also prevents acid reflux. This is because acid in our stomach destroys harmful bacteria and prevents their growth. These harmful bacteria produce a lot of gas which escapes through the mouth, and in the process carries stomach acid with it. This is how we get acid reflux. Omeprazole provides occasional relief from abdominal symptoms, but at a cost to the body. Omeprazole provides relief by stopping the production of stomach acid – hydrochloric acid. The lack of acid in the stomach encourages the growth of harmful bacteria which suppresses the good bacteria. This in turn causes gastritis, flatulence, acid reflux etc. Another cause of abdominal discomfort is the presence of toxins in the liver and intestine. This is a common finding of mine from diagnostic scans. These toxins include heavy metals – cadmium, mercury, lead, mycotoxins (toxins from fungi), pesticides, herbicides, insecticides etc. Most people have had a lifetime accumulating these toxins in their organs without doing very much to get rid of them. And after many years, the body starts to experience an overload, especially with the abdominal organs, and this is then experienced as abdominal discomfort.

MODERATE MUSLIMS MUST STOP THE NUTTERS
Every right-minded person was, I'm sure, horrified and disgusted by the hacking to death of a British soldier on a UK street last week by twisted Islamic extremists. Our hearts go out to the family of the soldier. Whatever gets into people's heads to act this way baffles me. Can you imagine any British "Christian extremist" going to a street in a Muslim country and wantonly hacking to death one of their soldiers in the streets? Of course you can't! It's beyond belief. So, what on earth is in the mindset of these Muslims who have allowed themselves to be brainwashed into carrying out such abominable acts? The Koran doesn't tell them to do it, and they believe in the same God as Christians. I've long held the belief that religion is just as much a force for evil as it is a force for good ,and here's the perfect example. Religious belief can so easily become a fanatical
belief and that's why it is such a dangerous force when it is in the wrong hands. And that is why so many British people have turned their back on the church, wanting little or anything to do with it. A few weeks ago, when I was writing about the horrors of Syria, I wrote that it is the Muslim world which must act to put an end to their conflicts and Islamist extremism. It cannot be done by the W e s t . Intervention by the West causes more harm than good. It has to be the creation of a new order from
within, and the sooner it happens the better, because the world desperately needs to be a safer place. So, I applaud the fact that Imams in Mosques throughout the UK, during Friday prayers, condemned the outrage. Can something good come out of this evil, rather than what the crazed Islamists wanted, which was war on UK streets? A comment from a UK intelligence expert sent a chill down my spine. He said the exact number of radicalised Muslims in the UK wasn't known, but there were probably thousands, who were in various stages of becoming so extreme, as to be capable of another atrocity. And we're supposed to be living in a civilised society? I have just written that religion can be a force for good and also bad - and this takes me conveniently on to my next subject, which had me wringing my hands is despair. It’s about a new sect in America (Why is it that so many things that cause problems come from America?), which not only urges its followers to avoid contraception, but to actively breed as many children as they possibly can. It's called The Quiverfull, and its message is spreading over to Europe. Yes, in Biblical times and until the 19th century, having large families was the norm: - because of the lack of contraception and because so many were likely to die in childbirth and as infants. In short, it had more to do with the survival of the species than religious belief. Christians in the sect believe in giving up all forms of contraception and accepting as many children as God gives, both as a sign of obedience to God and in a bid to ensure the future of the faith. In the US, Quiverfull families frequently reach up to a dozen children, with the numbers of adherents in the tens of thousands. In the UK the average family size is 1.7 children. There have been many instances of Quiverfull women becoming pregnant against all medical advice. My concern is that these people, who think they

Focus on LA ZENIA There’s more to explore in La Zenia ! Lying at the very heart of Orihuela Costa, La Zenia has evolved into a thriving urbanization, with a plethora of professional businesses giving good reason to pay a visit. Its most prominent landmark for holiday makers was historically the La Zenia Hotel, which sits on top of the rock face, looking out over the Mediterranean. However, to locals, the pinnacle of La Zenia is more often the hub of Bars, Restaurants and other amenities located

RESCUED MADGE IS A WINNER! Smoother ride for Mabs
RESCUE dog Madge was certainly a top dog with a surprise hat-trick of wins at a local show, just weeks after being found dumped in field. She’d been discovered starving, injured, and very frightened, and was taken to the Cats N Dogs Aid Association. After a difficult start in trying win over her trust, Madge went to the Amber Lodge Kennels, where she was nursed back to full health, ending up as the star attraction at their annual dog show! She got the Best in Show; Best Condition; and the Dog that “the judge would most likely to take home” titles. Madge’s triple success was even more impressive in that the judge was a local vet who had no idea at all that she was a rescue dog. The day was not just a good one for Madge, but also for the Cats N Dogs charity, with 549 Euros being raised. Madge is still looking for a home, so if you would like further information please call Laurence on 680856235 or Cats N Dogs A.A. on 616655789.

KEEP ON Fun coming to RUNNING Playa Flamenca TAFFETA the miniature horse from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales had a day to remember, leading the recent San Isidro Pilgrims Walk. Behind Taffeta in the procession were six horses, followed by the statue of San Isidro, and then the Mayor of Rojales and the pilgrims, making the journey from the church to Recorral Park. San Isidro is the patron saint of farmers, and the tradition of celebrating goes back over two centuries, with the Rojales walkers being supplied
with straw hats, scarves, and walking canes, along with a sprig of Rosemary. Co-Founder Sue Weeding said “Isn’t it incredible that a little miniature horse left to die five years ago, is now leading an important procession through Rojales and being greeted by the Mayor. We at the rescue centre think it’s wonderful to have become part of the great community of Rojales”. For more information on the EHCRC Foundation please visit www.easyhorsecare.net

BRIDLELESS EMMA’S TOP TRICK A DOLORES rider has beaten the odds and trained a horse that was described as “too hot to handle”, becoming one of the area’s top horse performers. 27 year old Emma Tytherleigh has created a winning partnership with Romero, who had been passed on between many owners during his 8 year life. She wanted some stability for Romero after all his different homes and to see whether they could form a bond. And that’s what happened after a lot of training and patience from Emma, which has seen a complete transformation in less than a year. “People are shocked when they realise I have not had him for long. We are now a great partnership, with Romero allowing me to trick ride, without a bridle on his head. I think I’m the only trick rider in Spain doing that!” Emma’s making waves in what is regarded as a Spanish tradition, but her success doesn’t come as a
shock, as her whole life has been dominated by horses. Her parents owned one of the biggest riding schools in the UK for some 20 years, but they had to sell up and retire to Spain in 2005 due to ill health. Two years later, Emma went to North America to join the Cavalia touring horse show, schooling their young Iberian horses, as well as performing a number of trick acts with them. Life took a tragic turn as
Emma had to return to Spain in 2011 to help nurse her ill father, who died a few months later. Emma’s mum decided to move back to the UK, but she decided to lay down some roots here with her horse, two ponies, and dog! She’s now performing in various events with Romero across the Costa Blanca, and her reputation is spreading across the country within the horse-performing community, having been
involved with E Q U I M U R 2013(Spain’s equivalent of the UK Horse of the Year Show. Emma’s also training and working with the top Grand Prix dressage rider, Juan Cortes, who’s also performing alongside her in some of her shows. And Emma has plenty of ambition and plans for the future. “Money permitting, I’d love to set up a small riding school, which would also teach trick riding for those who want it,” said Emma. “….and I’d love to get a group of talented teenagers together, and get them to perform around Spain with me!” You can see Emma in action this evening (Friday May 31st), along with Juan Cortes in a Flamenco Evening at Casa la Pedrera, with the doors opening at 6.30pm. They’ll be singing a mixture of sacred and secular music at La Siesta church, starting at 7.30pm. Entry will be free of charge, but any donations to the church will be gratefully accepted. And the choir would love to hear from you, if you fancy stretching your vocal chords and joining them! Their final rehearsals ahead of the summer holiday will be next Friday afternoon (June 7th), and the following Friday between 3pm and 5pm at La Siesta church. TWO CHOIRS FLASH BANG WALLOP! HIT RIGHT NOTE IT’S A PAINTING!
CLASSIC cars of the 50’s and 60’s will take you on a nostalgia trip in Dolores from next Friday (June 7th). Local artist, Ronen Zlotogoura, has made a name for himself in recent years with all kinds of murals around the region in various restaurants and bars. He’s been working for the last couple of years on producing a special series of paintings that cele-
brate classic cars, and the fruits of Ronen’s labours will be displayed at the Dolores Cultural Centre. What’s unique about Ronan’s work is that the paintings are described as “Hyperrealistic”, which means that it looks like a high resolution photograph. It’s a style of art that has only taken off in the last decade, and the exhibition will give a close up chance to see what it’s all
about. The “Nostalgia” Exhibition runs between Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 16th at the Dolores Cultural Centre between noon and 8pm every day, with free admission. There’s a special preview next Friday evening from 8pm You can also find out more about Ronen’s work at his website: www.zlotogoura.com
It was standing room only at La Zenia church last Sunday night, with two local choirs raising the roof, as well as raising one thousand Euros for church funds! In Harmony and the Cantemos Children’s Choir sang a wide range of songs for all tastes under their musical director, Nigel Hopkins. One of the highlights of the evening was Cantemos performing a song called Can You Hear Me? This was about life for a deaf person, and the children also used sign language as well as singing at the same time, in what turned out to be a very moving performance. Both choirs joined forces at the end for 'Let there be peace on Earth', which brought them a standing ovation from a packed house.

Sweet yet sour rescue for chinese baby
Heroes refuse fascist cash
daily Mail
FIREFIGHTERS in eastern China have rescued an abandoned newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe. The infant was stuck in a pipe directly beneath a toilet commode, state television reported, in a case which has sparked anger on social media sites. There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned, often shortly after birth. The problem is attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China's strict family planning rules. In the latest case the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang on
Saturday afternoon. The harrowing discovery came after residents reported the sound of a baby crying, state television said late on Monday. The pipe was just four inches wide in diameter the China Daily newspaper said. Firefighters had to remove the pipe and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside, the report said. His arms had been pinned to his side, and when the confines of the pipe had been delicately prised away, he let out a long wail - much to the relief of doctors who were battling against the clock to rescue him.
His eyes, face and body were covered in the filth of the pipe. The child is in a stable condition and the police are looking for his parents, state television added. The Associated Press said the child had been named Baby No 59 from the number of his incubator, the Guardian reported. A number of visitors have donated nappies, baby clothes and powdered milk to the hospital to help the little boy, the news agency added. The case has been widely discussed on China's Twitter-like service Sina Weibo due to the graphic nature of the footage, with calls for the parents to be severely punished. 'The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe,' wrote one user.
AN ASTEROID about the same size as the Golden Gate Bridge, or nine Queen Elizabeth 2 ships, will zip past Earth this week. The close encounter with asteroid 1998 QE2 takes place at 9.59pm UK time on Friday. But don’t be too nervous – it will be 3.6million miles away, about 15 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
‘We know with great certainty it won’t hit us,’ said Nasa expert Amy Mianzer. Colleague Lance Benner of the US space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory added: ‘Whenever an asteroid approaches this closely, it provides an important scientific opportunity to study it in detail to understand its size, shape, rotation, surface features, and what they can tell us about its origin.’ Last month Nasa announced plans
to capture a small asteroid and ‘store’ it near the Moon in order for astronauts to explore. The $100million project (£65million) aims to double up as a training resource for Mars-bound astronauts in the future and as a means of developing the ability to push away asteroids heading for Earth.
It’s not armageddon
THE Help For Heroes charity has announced that it will not be accepting cash rasied for them by the English Defence League. EDL leader Tommy Robinson has set up a Just Giving page - now shut down - to raise money for a 17-mile sponsored walk from Westminster to where soldier Lee Rigby was murdered in Woolwich last week. But the charity said it doesn't allow "political fundraising" and would therefore not be accepting any donations. Robinson said he will still complete the walk despite the "political correctness" of the decision. Over £3,000 had been raised before the page was shut down. Help For Heroes said: "He's [Robinson] the only one that's come to our attention but tonight we'll be doing a cross-count to make sure that anyone else that's saying they're EDL will not be allowed to fundraise for us.
"It's the same for any political party, we don't allow political fundraising. "As a charity, we're nonpolitical." Robinson tweeted his "shock" at the decision. He wrote: "Shocked that political correctness has even gripped our armed forces charity. "Amazed that a charity rejects a potential 100g." The EDL protested outside Downing Street yesterday, as tensions mounted following the killing of Lee Rigby last week. Over 1,000 supporters of the far-right group gathered and chanted: "Muslim killers off our streets." Robinson told the crowd: "They've had their Arab Spring. This is time for the English Spring." Drummer Rigby was killed in a brutal attack in Woolwich last week while he was wearing a Help For Heroes T-shirt. The charity has been flooded with donations in the wake of the murder.

A WOMAN who was accidentally caught on camera having sex with the teenage son of her boyfriend after he set up a video camera to film ghosts has been jailed for six months. The 28-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to five counts of sex with a minor at the Supreme Court. Justice David Porter sentenced the woman to 12 months' jail, six of them suspended on condition of good behaviour. He told her: "You must bear full responsibility for what happened. "The relationship that commenced was more opportunistic than predatory ... but that cannot truly be said of your later conduct." The Australian man was hoping to film paranormal activity in his kitchen but instead was horrified to
find footage of his lover and 16year-old son kissing and cuddling. She said she was “ashamed and embarrassed” by her actions and claimed she thought the age of consent was 16, when it is in fact 17. The court heard that, when the man confronted his partner of 11 years over the video recording, she tried to downplay the incident as an innocent cuddle.

She then had to return to Jamaica after her mother died and, while she was away, HMRC sent a letter apologising for the mistake - saying she actually owed £16,905. The cafe owner said she accepted the apology, but added: ‘I’m still angry about it. I can’t believe someone in that office would send that out. I don’t even get a wage from the café. ‘I’m a woman running this business on my own and put all the hours in just to get by - and they send me a letter threatening to take everything away unless I pay £1billion.’ An HMRC spokesman said: ‘We are very sorry to hear of the problems our customer has had. ‘We cannot comment on individual cases - but when mistakes do happen our aim is to always put them right as soon as we can and apologise for any inconvenience caused.’

SPANISH NEWS
PROSECUTION CAN’T IRON OUT DRUGS PHONE BUGS THE LARGEST-EVER drug-dealing trial in the history of the Balearic Islands has seen 40 people acquitted out of the 52 arrested. Telephone-tapping operations enabled investigators to incriminate most of the accused parties, but the court in Palma de Mallorca has declared these 'null and void' as evidence. They were originally authorised by the judge in a lower court but this was later overturned on the basis that 'mere supposition' was insufficient grounds for performing
'invasive' operations such as planting bugs on suspects' phones. Among those who no longer face charges are Francisca Cortés Picazo (pictured), known as 'La Paca' and former matriarch of a shanty-town-dwelling population in Son Banya, near Palma. She remains in custody charged with other offences, however, including an earlier multiple cocaine- and heroin-smuggling racket in Mallorca and Ibiza, and faces 19 years in jail.
Of those still accused, 10 of them are likely to be sent to prison for between three and seven years and another man for a year for illegal possession of arms, whilst the jury is still out on the 12th party. Initially, the prosecution service called for custodial terms of a total of 700 years for those involved and fines to the tune of 29 million euros, but due to 'undue delays' in the trial these have been reduced to 56 years in total and 4.4 million euros.
It’s a knock-out in Barca court
“ORDER!” was the extent of what Barcelona provincial High Court Judge Elena Guindulain was able to say during the trial of several suspected members of a criminal gang accused of extortion, battery and drug trafficking on Monday. The presence in the courtroom of 23 defendants belonging to the Casuals, an organization with links to the FC Barcelona hardcore fan group the Boixos Nois, led to the deployment of a large number of police officers. During previous sessions proceedings had been calm but the expulsion of one of the defendants, David Rodríguez, was the spark that lit the fuse. The rest of the suspects said they would leave if Rodríguez was removed and made for the door of the courtroom, where the Mossos d’Esquadra barred their way. A fist-fight lasting five minutes
ensued and left four Mossos and two defendants injured, one with a potentially broken arm. Family members of the defendants criticized the “brutality” of the police and claimed that batons had been used to beat a handcuffed suspect on the floor of the courtroom. When the trial was renewed the prosecutor, Ana Gil, asked that the defendants be removed due to the “exceptional and violent fuss.” Defense
SPAIN ON AMNESTY RADAR
Amnesty International has slammed as “unacceptable”, Spanish police behaviour in recent antiausterity protests. The human rights organisation is focusing more on Spain
lawyers opposed the request and one said that although the suspects’ behavior was unacceptable, it had been provoked by the “unprecedented” police presence. Another lawyer said the deployment was a “humiliation.” “We have never seen anything like this in the court,” said a prosecution lawyer. “It was a rebellion.” Proceedings were reinitiated at 3.30pm. The leader of the Casuals, Ricardo Mateo, faces 119 years in prison. He and other members of the gang were tried five months ago for torturing and robbing a drug trafficker. Prosecutors had sought 53 years for Mateo and his co-conspirators but magistrates reduced this to three-anda-half years as it was ruled the defendants did not belong to a criminal organization.
after a big leap in reports of police brutality; family evictions; a lack of rights for illegal immigrants; and poverty rates. Most of these problems are caused by the recession, with increasing allegations of police brutality during anti-government demonstrations. Despite the police being reported for overstepping the mark, Amnesty says it’s very difficult to prosecute an officer, especially if the anti-riot brigades don’t show their identification tags. The organization is now working with the National Police to improve the training for new officers in human rights and “moral” issues.
Budget cuts, says Amnesty, have led to human rights violations such as stopping free access to health care for illegal immigrants or increasing arbitrary detent i o n s . Other violat i o n s i n c l u d e those linked to home evictions, with the European Court Justice now ruling against the Spanish government, and giving local judges more powers to make decisions. Amnesty also say they have been worried about people being locked up in solitary confinement for up to 13 days in terrorist cases without access to a doctor or legal advice.

SPANISH CLIMBER DIES IN THE HIMALAYAS Spaniard spent three days and nights at over 8,000m with a broken ankle "I'm as well as can be expected given the circumstances," reported Catalan mountaineer Juanjo Garra on May 23. After three days at an altitude of 8,000 meters with a broken ankle, just below the summit of Dhaulagiri, which he had just reached, only a miracle or an amazing act of sacrifice would be able to save him. In the end, both arrived. Garra had survived three days and nights without food or adequate cold-weather clothing after his successful summit attempt and he held on just long enough to see a sherpa rescue team arrive. Kheshap Sherpa, who had been on the descent with Garra, spent the entire time by his side as they desperately tried to get lower, out of the so-called "death zone" above 8,000m. But unable to walk properly, Garra and Kheshap only managed to descend to 7,900m.

TWIN SUICIDE TRAGEDY
THE bodies of twin British pensioners have been discovered in their apartment in what police believe was a double suicide. The 83 year-old expats, George and James Chalkley, were found with plastic bags over their heads at their flat in Fuengirola. The pair also had tape over their mouths. One brother was found in a chair in the living room while the other was found lying down in a bedroom. A police spokesman said investigating officers have ruled out a possible murder case, despite the strange circumstances. “No third party is being sought in connection with the deaths which appear to be the result of sui-
cide,” he added. Shocked friends have described the twins as ‘happy’ and ‘lively’ The pair, originally from West Ham, had lived together in the town for around 13 years. James, described by friends as the more ”outgoing’ of the brothers, had spent almost two decades working as an extra on programmes such as the Bill and Eastenders. The expat, known as to friends as Jimbo, also enjoyed a career racing speedway bikes before falling injured in Australia in the late sixties. “I’m just gob-smacked,” said Graham Cherry from the Salon Varietes Theatre where James
performed in local productions. “They always seemed happy, James was a real West End music hall type and George was the quieter one,” said Cherry. Alberto Daryanai, who owns a small shop frequented by the twins, believes one brother may have killed himself after retuning home to discover the other had committed suicide. “I think he just couldn’t bear to be apart from his brother,” said Daryanai. “I think one had a heart or chest problem, he did not look well, the other was really fit and active though. “They were both such nice people, they would pick up the English
newspapers and deliver them to other old people that weren’t well enough to leave the house. “When his brother was taken in to hospital, the other would buy chocolate bars from me for all the nurses on the ward,” added the 60-year-old. The bodies were discovered after neighbours reported a bad smell coming from the third floor apartment. Police believe the bodies may have been there for up to three days. A spokesman from the British Embassy in Madrid said: “We have been notified of the death of two British nationals in Fuengirola. We stand ready to give consular assistance.”
was planned under the guidance of Simone Moro, a pilot who had just broken the record for the highest rescue ever pulled off at 7,800m on Everest. Maurizio Folini, one of Moro's pilots, managed to land a team to rescue Garra but bad weather prevented the helicopter from reaching Camp 3. Meanwhile, German alpinist Dominick Moller arrived with three sherpas, carrying oxygen, two of whom managed to reach Garra and Kheshap, who made his way back down to Camp 3. Although the helicopter couldn't reach that altitude, it did fortuitously rescue an Indian climber who had been missing for two days at 7,400m as well as another Indian team. On one of those flights, Folini managed to deposit Egocheaga and Mingma Sherpa, who learned of Garra's death as they were climbing to him. "Juanjo spent three days with no food or water and little oxygen at minus 23 degrees and could not carry on," said a spokesman for the family, which has decided not to attempt to recover the body and risk more lives. "Juanjo will remain where he would want to be, at the roof of the world."
Young teens in dirty video shock The police have arrested six minors for distributing sexually explicit material online. A recording and several photographs were taken by a 13-year-old girl, who filmed herself and a very young child and sent the material to her 14-yearold boyfriend through her cellphone. The latter passed the files on to his contacts, and in a short space of time thousands of internet users had access to the material via videosharing site YouTube. One of the detainees is the individual who uploaded the video to YouTube. The recording was quickly deleted by the police’s special IT unit. Several citizen alerts issued on May 13 led the authorities to investigate the case. The video was shot in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. Although the author of the film is too young to face charges, the 14-year-olds face penalties for distributing child pornography.

Horrorscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 The belly dancers you have booked for a stag night will prove highly popular with the intended audience, although not with a group of girl guides who wanted to use the changing rooms at the time. Help bridge the gap by promising to buy 10 boxes of cookies from the fat spotty grumpy looking one. After a poor start to the year, you are about to enjoy a period of superbly executed plans.
Taurus April 20 - May 20 Your attempts to take up extreme sports will receive another boost this week when, whilst walking out to your car, you will (unbelievably) catch in your arms a large television set thrown out of an upstairs window. The adrenaline rush you get from the success of this catch will feature heavily in your after-dinner talk circuit, and possibly on Letterman, later in your catching career.
Gemini May 21 - June 20 The Sun is expected to add spice into your life around the Tuesday when an unlikely career development presents itself in the form of what looks like a small furry animal. Accept this development with glee, although do not part with any of your savings until you have in your possession at least three of the pictures of your boss in the promised, incriminating, position of 'triple licky lust'.
Cancer June 21 - July 22 Bonsai is well starred for the first half of the week, but you will be unable to buy the small, dinky, cutting tools required. You will attempt to use standard sized scissors and be happy with the initial results, however a strange feng shui type thing is going on in the background which will lead to a higher than average breakage of drinking vessels and vases for the next 6 weeks.
By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Sailing and diving are, once again, under the direct influence of Jupiter for most of the week (the planet is a keen water sports fan). However, from Monday a negative conjunction with Saturn suggests problems with your knees. Ensure enough ointment is on hand especially if the cracking sound coming from your legs can be heard over the speedboat's engine...
Virgo August 23 - September 22 A moment of well-meaning extreme flippancy will lead to temporary, but painful, consequences for a circus dwarf with a feather in his hat. The dead-leg you inadvertently give him will subside before sunset if you keep him fed with tea and cookies. However, best not to make friends with him after the cock crows, as he harbors a resentment that only small people can truly pull off.
Libra September 23 - October 22 Pluto is beginning its once every 1000 year romp with Mercury standing by, watching, from the sidelines. This could have a devastating impact on any attempt to balance on stilts, and, indeed, any circus performance which is ill starred for the next 15 years. Never fear for your own life, however, it is only those in the front three rows in the audience who are in mortal danger.
Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Bottled water is the best chance of your survival this week when the local Al Qaeda affiliate chapter randomly select your street as target practice on the exact day an anti-terrorism practice is to take place down it. Of course someone has tipped them off. Watch who you call between Monday and Wednesday and become cryptic in any conversations regarding your street to people you have known for less than 1 year...
Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 A local be-hooded hoodlum will be impressed by your driving skills on 15th whilst you are speed-parking your car at the supermarket. He may attempt to make eye-contact. Take this opportunity to make a difference to this young punk's life, although don't let him valet park your car until the Yak yawns at the moon after Tuhrsday
Capricorn December 22 - January 19 An alarm clock which has been trusted for years will start to become inaccurate around the Friday. A rare celestial conjugation between Mercury and Uranus (technically known as a Myanus) will add two hours to your alarm clock wakey-time and the sleep timer could double in duration for each press. Luckily your boss is the same star sign as you and your tardiness will go unnoticed.
Aquarius January 20 - February 18 A syringe will become stuck in your arm this week in a bizarre accident involving an action doll figure. The person who advises that the stuck needle should be pushed further in before it can be pulled out is evil - do not listen to him, even if he wears a doctor's coat. Your life depends on you avoiding a tongue twister involving the letter P after Tuesday.
Pisces February 19 - March 20 On watching the news on Sunday you will be surprised to see a painting of your grandfather in a museum in St Petersburg, Russia. Make all the necessary calls to find out who this person actually is. A spam e-mail you receive on Monday will advise you on the virtues of a liquid which stops people going bald. If bald headedness bothers you, shave all of your hair off immediately, get it over with and enjoy life with renewed vigor.

Is this the world's fastest bog? A plumber from Lincolnshire has built what's believed to be the world's fastest motorised toilet. Colin Furze's crazy contraption took a month to build - and he hopes to set a new world record ratified by the Guinness Book of Records The motorised loo can travel at speeds of up to 55mph, yet retains many of its latrine qualities. Furze's contraption brings to an end worries that you won't make it to the nearest service station in time if you're desperate for a pee while on a long motorway journey: it even retains its original flushing mechanism. The unusual toilet doesn't hang around: Furze, from the genteel Georgian market town of Stamford, recently voted the best place to live in Britain by the Sunday Times, has fitted a 140cc motorbike engine. The engine is hidden underneath the seat and sends drive to the wheels through a four-speed gearbox. The tongue-in-cheek mobile bog is bristling with humorous touches. A button on the handle bars flushes the bowl, although the plumbing on-board means this is only for show - there is no drainage for real effluent... And Furze, 33, has added a special clip so he can read his newspaper while on the loo. Not a recommended activity while zooming along the A1 at speeds of up to 55mph! The motorised look is not the most practical form of transport, however. Furze quotes a typical fuel consumption of 10 miles per gallon and some of the lighter touches mean the Toilet is not as comfortable as a Toyota. 'It is quite scary to drive as the water in the toilet makes it very top heavy and I get wet when I go over any bumps,'
Furze told the Daily Mail. Furze admits that water can slosh about as he drives his turbocharged toilet around - but he's fitted practical blackand-white chequerboard tiles to the floor, so it's easy to keep this unusual vehicle clean. He admits that the loo seat can become slippery if he corners too vigorously, making it hard to stay on-board. This idiosyncratic bog is designed to take the mantle of the world's fastest toilet - a record held by the Bog Standard, which was timed at 42mph in Milan, Italy, in March 2011. A Canadian stunt driver set a time of 46mph in Sydney, Australia, in 2012, but this record was not verified by the Guinness Book of Records. British plumber Furze hopes to
trump both existing speeds with his new device. He is confident it will hit 55mph and says it may even top 60mph, given a long enough straight and a fair wind. The toilet's creator told the Daily Mail: 'I'm a plumber and I'm used to putting toilets together so I thought I'd try the challenge of making the fastest. 'I've seen people build them before using mopeds, but I've given mine a more powerful engine so it can go much faster.' The unusual motorised loo is based on the hardware of a mobility scooter. Furze, who is a plumber by trade and clearly quite handy with a toolkit, then added a steel frame and wooden platform to which he attached the humble toilet. Details abound: the brush on the floor doubles up as a gear-lever and the exhaust pipe is disguised as a loo roll holder, flapping toilet tissue in the slipstream as he drives along at speeds of up to 55mph. Don't expect to see Furze's madcap creation overtake you in the fast lane, however. It is not road registered and the number plates are merely showcase ones. You might end up flushed in the face if you got pulled over by traffic police driving one of these... The motorised toilet is the latest in a long line of madcap British vehicles. We've seen beds, cartoon characters and even bathtubs turned into cars in the past. Furze's loony loo is certainly quite a sight to behold when in full flow: the motorbike engine buzzes angrily, the newspaper flaps wildly in the wind and you're left pinching yourself. Yes - you really did just see a motorised toilet on the road. It's a brilliantly eccentric British vehicle...

Holly Willoughby and Reggie Yates present the first of two knockout rounds to be shown over the weekend, in which Jessie J, Tom Jones, Will.i.am and Danny O'Donoghue reduce their teams of seven down to the three acts that will perform in the live shows. The vocalists will be pitted against each other in further head-to-head battles, this time choosing their own songs, although they won't know who they're up against until the moment they're chosen to take the stage.

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com
MEDINAH HEROES SINK AT VIRGINIA WATER DESPITE some wicked weather over the first two days, the European Tour’s premier event, The PGA Championship at Wentworth showed what a lovely, yet challenging course, Virginia Water is, whatever the conditions. This event should attract the best players in the world, but for whatever reason it doesn’t. Perhaps it’s down to the prize pot being only €4.75 million that doesn’t make it worth starting up that private jet to fly into Heathrow? Just one American turned up, and that was Peter Uihlein who finished twelfth at – 6. Yet the prize money was not that much different from the Crowne Victoria Invitational in Texas at €4,928,000 The biggest concern must be the poor display by five of last year’s heroic winning Ryder Cup team in Medinah. Their main reason to be there, I guess was, to showcase themselves after that monumental win, with Luke Donald was going for a three time back-to-back win to equal Colin Montgomerie’s record. To say poor is probably an understatement with Ian Poulter +8, Luke Donald +6, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell +5 and Paul Lawrie +3. But our other stalwart Lee
Westwood dropped off the top after the 11th and 12th holes and ended up joint 9th at -7. It’s not so much that he didn’t win as the way he lost. It does seem to be a regular trait that he has in that he doesn’t seem to be able to shut the trapdoor when he’s in front. Perhaps the lush Wentworth course was too difficult for the British and Irish players that have packed their bags and moved to the PGA Tour on the other side of the pond, where the money and benefits are so better and the courses less challenging. It does beggar belief when Ian Poulter sent a Tweet saying where he was going to sit at the Monaco Grand Prix, whilst Rory McIlroy could not decide whether to join Poulter or to go to Paris to see his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki preparing for the French Open Tennis. It really is tough at the top! Another concern of mine is that the live TV coverage has switched from the BBC to SKY Sports. All the BBC screened were daily highlights where you could compare the quality of Peter Alliss, Andrew Cotter and Ken Brown (And Hazel Irvine1) to that of the dull Ewan Murray, Bruce Critchley and Mark Roe.
There is a danger of BBC losing The Open if they do not show more golf(ED: Sky’s new contract with the European Tour gave them live exclusivity for every event, which the BBC could do nothing about). On the plus side, we had a European winner in Matteo Manassero who finished at ten under (Believe it or not he was my tip: - ask Donna Gee!). The Italian has become the youngest ever winner of the Championship
O’Grady, CEO of the European Tour, used the term while trying to defend Garcia on Sky Sports before later apologizing for his use of language. O'Grady and PGA Tour commissioner Tim Fincham spoke to Sergio and, decided to accept his really heartfelt apology and we were convinced that he was trying to be funny with a lighthearted remark. Sergio and the Tiger have been locked in a war of words since the fourteen time major winner caused crowd noise to disat just 20 years and 37 days rupt his swing at The Players after a four hole play-off Championship earlier this including fallow Europeans month. All races play on the ,Simon Khan and Marc European Tour and that's Warren. how it should be. The controKFC:- SERGIO versy started when Sergio STYLE was asked light-heartedly Sergio Garcia's return to whether he would be inviting the PGA Championship after Woods round for dinner at eleven years, was overshadthe US Open next month owed by one of the game's and he said: ‘Every night — top chiefs re-opening the and serving him fried chickrace row with Tiger Woods en.' Sergio’s then had to by claiming that some of the apologise for a remark that Spaniard's best friends are hypothetically carries racist 'coloured athletes'. George
overtones, as fried chicken is stereotypically a food associated with African Americans. Even Colin Montgomerie said: - “It’s a mountain out of a molehill. We're all frightened to say anything or to open our mouths in case we say something that isn't kosher in 2013. Somebody should tell us what to say because no one is quite sure what is right and wrong." You can now imagine players at a news conference having to say `sorry, no comment' and hope that is not offending anybody. You just can't say a thing, can you? It would appear that there are three `no-no's' of race, religion and politics and you are going to upset someone along the line if you mention any of them. It's time to move on and talk about golf It has all got totally out of proportion by the media getting hold of something and like a dog with a bone, not letting go and making a meal of it. (No pun intended).
ANNOYING PARTNERS 3
TITTER ON THE TEE Stan decided to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was cleaning his golf clubs for his Saturday game. His wife was standing at the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally speaks. "Darling, I've been thinking, now that we are married I think it's time you quit playing so much golf. Maybe you should sell your clubs and cancel your membership at the golf club." Stan gets this horrified look on his face. She says, "Darling, what's wrong?" He says, "For a minute you were sounding like my exwife." "Ex-wife!" she screams, "I didn't know you were married before!" "I wasn't."
KNOW YOUR RULES QUESTION A player dropped his towel on the ground. The wind blew the towel onto a player’s ball and moved it what is the ruling? A: No ruling. Pick up the towel and play the ball as it lies. B: 1 stroke penalty and replace the ball to its original position. C: 2 stroke penalty and play the ball as it lies. ANSWER B: As the players equipment caused the ball to move, the player incurred a penalty stroke and must replace the ball – Rule 18-2a
Fisherman Golfer Defining characteristics: Never passes a water hazard without his trusty scoop at the ready. Last bought a new sleeve of balls in the late 80s! Favourite expression: "Look! A ProV1!"
The Volcano
Defining characteristics: Has a unique ability to allow even the most pleasant days
to be spoilt by any bad swing, bounce, or lie. Relies on his Fisherman partner to occasionally fetch clubs out of lake. Favourite expression: "[Not printable]"
Delusional Golfer
Defining characteristics: Forces group to wait on every par 5 because he's convinced he can get home in two. Usually gets there in four.
Favourite expression: "If I really catch it, I can get there or I’m going to go for it"
Mulligan Man
Defining characteristics:
Liberally allows himself another whack even when first shot is findable. Favorite expression: "Wait, wait, wait. I gotta try another."

QUASIMODO RINGS A SPORTING BELL IF you believe that winning is everything, and coming second or being beaten is for losers, there’s just one flaw in that argument. You can’t win everything: sometime, sooner or later, no matter how good you are you are going to lose, or come second – you have to. But today the bar is set so high, the standards so atmospheric that any hint of failure means the bullet from some morons in charge. Last week I posed the question: if Manchester City had won the Cup Final would Roberto Mancini have still s t a y e d ? Apparently not, according to City’s director of football, Ferran Soriano speaking this week. The damage was done earlier apparently, by City’s catastrophic performances in the Champions League when they finished bottom in abject humiliation, despite it being accepted as ‘the group of death’. Not even a respectable
second in the league to nasty neighb o u r s M a n United, well clear of the London triumvirate and neither reaching, if not winning the FA Cup is good enough at the Etihad. Well, we’ll see next season - won’t we, Ferran? A little story: way back when Pontius was a pilot, I served my Queen and country in the RAF, and played football enthusiastically for some years for my station team. We had a very good first team, including several RAF players, but some were aircrew and often away. At the end of one season we had to go to play HMS M e r c u r y, who were top – and if they beat us, they
won the league, a draw wasn’t good enough. Being the only RAF team in a strong Naval-dominated league around Portsmouth there was a lot of service pride at stake. We were politely known as ‘the Brylcreem Boys’ amongst other unsavoury nicknames – and all the Navy teams regularly tried to kick lumps out of us - but we could look after ourselves: game on... I think Mercury’s whole station was out there to support them that afternoon, more than for any game I’d ever played in - all baying for our blood from the first whistle. If you play right back, like me you’re always up against the left winger: he’s either small, tricky and fast, or 7ft 3” with knuckles that drag on the floor. This one was from the latter colony, with ominous facial scars and a wicked cast in his eye: Quasimodo wasn’t in it. I’ve heard of playing out of your class – but out of your species? From the start Quas and I were at it, kicking each other on and off the ball, but as that was going on all over the field somehow neither of us got booked. Midway through the first half we
went one up, much to the vocal disgust of the crowd, but twenty minutes from the end Mercury equalised, and suddenly the pressure got even more intense. With minutes left we were holding out when they got a corner. It was partially cleared but a volleyed rocket came back straight at my head as I correctly stood just inside the post: my moment of glory. Unfortunately our centre half dived across to just touch it over my head and in
off the bar – and we lost 2 – 1. When the final whistle went, sportingly Quas rushed over and shook my hand, not my throat, and surprisingly we went off arm-in-arm. Their lads all then brought us a beer each into our changing rooms: nice touch. And. d’you know what? I played hundreds of games in my time, but I enjoyed – and remembered that one very much – and we lost. Winning isn’t everything…

CAMPEONES, CAMPEONES! Elche 1
RM Castilla

The priceless point was made on Sunday, as although Elche are already promoted back to La Liga after 24 years in the Segunda Division, with three games to go they still needed one point to be Champions. The Illicitanos got it from the draw with Real Madrid’s ‘B’ team, RM Castilla. 20,000 turned out in carnival mood amid a sea of bright green and white, happy families everywhere to see their heroes become deserved
Champions after this fantastic season. Writes John McGregor ‘Campeones, Campeones’ rang round the ground, followed by Mexican waves and the usual mandatory insults to local rivals Hercules. This season will go down in Spanish football history as the one where the Illicitanos have finally done it in style, and with two games to go the Franjiverdes are worthy winners: ELCHE ARE CHAMPIONS! Mucho Elche!

Murcia’s Ford-Dunn brothers took to the track again in an eventful round of the Valencian Supermoto championships in Villena. Anthony come second in the first race, just behind the exSpanish champion, Israel Escalera, with his older brother Mat in fourth spot. In a dramatic second race, three riders including Anthony were caught up in a tight scrap on the first corner, with his bike being flicked up into the air. He remounted, managing to finish fifth, with Mat coming second. The final results gave Mat the overall win in the SM Masters class and Anthony a brave third position in the tougher SM Open category. The season so far has Mat leading the Valencian SM Masters, and a close third in the Spanish SM Masters championships, with Anthony currently second in the Valencian Open championship.
Inspiring coach remembered CINCO-A-SIDE
Alan Davies, a man who had a great passion for Rugby Union, including being the junior coach for the Welsh star, Shane Williams, will be remembered in the second staging of a Memorial Sevens tournament in Elche tomorrow

the competition which will start at 10.00am. Looking further ahead, the Murcia Sevens tournament is on Saturday June 8th, and the Formentera del Segura Exhibition Sevens on Saturday June 29th

LUCK OF THE IRISH Bore draw in fag end season encounter
As usual, England should’ve won Wednesday night’s friendly against Ireland, and as usual they didn’t, after Ashley Cole led the team out for his 100th cap. A superb Shane Long header put the Irish ahead after only 13 minutes, but defying any thoughts of retirement, evergreen Frankie Lampard equalised 10 minutes later with his 29th England goal in his 96th International: that’s six in his last six games for England, as he gets better with age after a vintage season for Chelsea. There were positive performances from Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill, Alex Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, but Glen Johnson looked knackered to me. And after a terrific season, Michael Carrick looks like he needs a rest too. England could, and should have scored more, and they’ve now flown off to play Brazil on Sunday night. Domestics: more managerial merry-go-round moves: Rafael Benitez has interimed-off to Neapolitan Napoli, no doubt narked from winning the Europa Cup and securing 3rd place in the Prem for
John McGregor reports
Chelsea. Roberto Martinez is finally fleeing Wigan gleefully going to Goodison with an announcement this Monday. Oh, and miserable Mark Hughes is the new Stoke boss. Looks like Spurs’ Gareth-the-Great Bale could be going to Real Madrid, ‘twas on the front page of ‘Marca’ this week; maybe Luca Modric moving back in reverse? Or could the professional earbiter, Luis Suarez be leaving Anfield for Real? Question: what have the following five teams in common: Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Everton and Stoke? Well, they’ll all start the 2013/14 season with a new manager – amazing if you think the first four are in the top six. You’d think it would be the other way round… Crystal Palace stuttered through the Championship play-off at Wembley to narrowly beat Watford by a Wilfred Zaha-won/Kevin Philips-scored penalty. On that form I can’t imagine Ian Holloway’s Palace doing much in the Prem - but then, I thought that about Swansea! Hey, did you catch the Conclusion of the Krauts Cup? Oh, alright, the Champions League Final. I was supporting Borussia Dortmund, where the manager looks like a butch Elton John, but Bayern Munich won their Bundesliga by kilometres, and as they lost
two finals in the last three years including last year’s to Chelsea in their own back yard, fair enough. Can’t warm to their playmaker Arjen Robben though, he flits along as though he’s drying his nail varnish. He made their first goal, then after Dortmund had equalised with a penalty he skilfully scored the lastminute winner. I moan about the number of foreign players in the Prem, but what about Bayern? Robben is Dutch, then there’s that ugly, dirty Frenchman Franck Ribery (should’ve been sent off in the first half for lashing out), Javi Martines is Spanish, David Alaba Austrian and Mario Mandzukic Croatian. Mind you, their captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is as German as sauerkraut - hey, he’d have been one if they’d lost again, ha ha - sour kraut? Oh, forget it… You have to say Bayern’s ‘veteran’ coach Jupp Heyken looks like he’s well past his sell-by date, he can now gracefully march back to let their new fuhrer, old Barcelona-mastermind Pep Guardiola work his magic. Mind you Pep, as I always say, it’s tough taking over at the top – where d’ you go? Oh, and if you’re interested (saddo…) Bayern play Stuttgart in their Cup final next Saturday, aiming for a terrific treble if Bayern win (vake up at ze back, zere!).
