KEITH RULES OVER CAM Thousands given hope over property shambles By Alex Trelinski A British laundry owner has done what Spanish lawyers couldn’t do: - winning a landmark legal battle against the former CAM Bank over getting his money back for a villa that wasn’t built. His victory gives hope to many others to get the same result, and he’s now running a parttime business offering advice on what to do. Keith Rule from Milton Keynes faced losing his life savings when CAM refused to hand back his £46k deposit for a property at the Finca Parks development at Hellin on the border of Murcia and Albacete. His lawyers had reached the end of the road in a long battle, but Mr.Rule took matters into his own hands by doing his own research into Spanish law on the internet using the

Google Translate facility. He found a 45 year old property law which made banks jointly responsible with promoters for returning guaranteed deposits on failed developments. Not only did he get his money back, but 46 other buyers have been refunded close to £1.3 million. Mr Rule made such an impression on his Spanish lawyers that they asked him to work for them on a part-time basis. He now combines the running of his laundry business with his new job of preparing case files for other Brits engulfed in the drama that swept him up when Spanish savings bank CAM washed its hands of buyers after an initial promise of a bank guarantee seven years ago. The 47 buyers involved in the landmark trial at a court in Albacete province have just received all the money back they put down. Only some of the 617 homes in Hellion were ever partially finished. The group are now

also applying to the court for case costs and interest on their deposits to be paid. Mr Rule, who handed over deposits on two villas in November 2006, said: 'At the

start of this fight people called me crazy but they don’t now and I’m delighted to have given hope to other Brits. 'I’m living proof you can take

Showhome killer says sorry A man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for the murder of a Torrevieja estate agent. Antonio ML pleaded guilty to the charge at the start of his trial in Elche this week, with prosecu-

tors calling him a “cold and calculating man”. He strangled a woman, and then stole her purse, after arranging to meet her at a house on Calle San Policarpo, Torrevieja, in February

2011. The killer apologised to the family of the victim for his crime, but he’s also been forced to pay over 120 thousand Euros in compensation to them as part of his sentence.

Alicante Airport is officially the fastest growing airport in Spain, with 6.9 per cent more passengers using El Altet over the first six months of 2012 compared to the same period last year. That is stark contrast to significant drops at other airports around the country. Alicante is also now on target to recover the passengers that it lost because of the financial problems with Spanair and the air-bridges dispute

Mallorcan firemen were called to a local hospital casualty department, after a 51 year old German man got his penis and testicles stuck in a steel made sex toy. The emergency department did not have any suitable equipment to prize the man’s parts out from the toy, and so the fire brigade got a surprise call to help out. The firemen struggled at first before settling on a batteryoperated radial saw. Two saws and two sets of batteries eventually had to be used to free the man from his embarrassing predicament. He has not been named and neither was it revealed whether or not he was on his own in Mallorca.

with Ryanair. In June, Alicante saw an 11 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared to 2012. Just under 1 million people used the airport during the year so far, with a 12 per cent rise in the number of flights. 28 new routes have been introduced for the summer season, linking up Scandinavia and Eastern Europe to the Costa Blanca.

Murcia City has been hit by two big jewel heists in less than a week. Crooks stole over 200 thousand Euros of jewellery and watches last Tuesday morning from the Castejon jewellers in the old quarter of the city. The East European gang’s loot included a 24 thousand Euro Cartier watch, as the three men smashed through the glass displays and helped themselves to what they wanted, as the salesperson looked on.

Meanwhile, two Spaniards and a Romanian were arrested on Sunday for robbing a shop in the city the previous week. They took 7 thousand Euros along with some jewels, and fled to Castellon in the northern part of the Valencia region, where they were apprehended by the police. Evidence was found from one of their homes in Benidorm.

SHOCK TACTICS COMING BOTTOM OF THE CLASS

The Valencian Government is promising tough action against Torrevieja’s illegal street vendors. In the wake of recent clashes between the police and the unlicensed hawkers, Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolan, called for help from the Guardia Civil in the on-going war against the vendors. He’s now received the backing of Valencia’s Justice Minister, Serafin Castilian on a visit to the city on Wednesday, when he pledged to introduce “shock plans to stop the selling of fake goods”. All this comes in the wake of fresh violence which saw three Torrevieja local police officers injured. Three Senegalese men were arrested on Tuesday as the police tried to seize items that were being sold on the Juan Aparicio promenade. The vendors grabbed chairs from nearby cafes and restaurants, throwing them at the officers, injuring three of them, as well as damaging three police vehicles.

Elche’s schools are going to be less clean in a bid to save half a million Euros. The city council tender for a new two year 3.4 million Euro contract says that the cleaning of some primary classroom floors and tables will be slashed to just once a week to cut costs.

Shameful Romanians

A Romanian gang has been arrested after a wave of violent robberies against vulnerable elderly people. The National Police in Elche swooped on two men and two women, aged mainly in their twenties, who would knock on doors, pretending to be collecting money for children’s charities. They would then get into the owner’s homes to steal property. They even resorted to remove per-

TORREVIEJA POOL TRAGEDY

A two year old German boy drowned in a private swimming pool in the La Siesta area of Torrevieja on Wednesday afternoon. His mother took her eye off him for a moment, and that’s when he fell into the water at around 4.00pm. Emergency services tried in vain to resuscitate the boy. Swimming pool and beach drownings have been reaching tragic proportions so far this month, with a 4 year old boy dying in his home pool at Molina de Segura near Murcia City last weekend. An elderly man was pulled out dead from the sea at Guardamar on Tuesday, whilst two women in their eighties were rescued after suffering heart attacks in the water at Playa del Molina in San Pedro del Pinatar and Galua beach at La Manga. Meanwhile, a 73 year old Belgian man was pulled out after fainting in the sea at Postiguet, Alicante on Wednesday. Emergency services say July has been the most tragic month of the year so far for deaths by drowning, and urged bathers to take extra care, avoiding rivers or beaches with no lifeguards, and keeping a close eye on children and the elderly, either at the sea side or in a swimming pool.

on powerful institutions and beat them when they’re wrong and you’re right.' A Spanish judge ruled CAM - now taken over by Sabadell - was guilty of malpractice for failing to ensure deposits were spent only on building the villas and never collecting an equivalent cash safeguard from the promoters. The holiday home buyers won an initial

trial against the bank and Spanish promoters Cleyton Ges in May 2012 - and an appeal in March this year. A second lawsuit on behalf of 13 more Finca Parcs buyers has already been filed - and Mr Rule is working on a third lawsuit with lawyer Maria de Castro and her brother Jaime who took the first case to court. Theirs and other Spanish legal firms are also winning

cases based on law 57/1968 - the law Keith uncovered on Google which has spared Brits the nightmare scenario of exhausting court battles against promoters with no money. Alec Edwards works for the Liverpool fire brigade. In 2009, he put down 150,000 euros as a deposit on a property in Trampolin Hills, in Murcia. "We could see that there was no build-

ing work, so we asked the bank to execute the guarantee, which it refused to do." Two months ago, after bringing legal action, he got all of his money back. His lawyer, Guadalupe Sánchez, says that British people are more inclined to take legal action. "Spaniards do not like taking on the banks, but the British seem to have no fear,"

A British couple were seriously injured in a headon car crash in the San Miguel area on Monday lunchtime. They had to be freed by Torrevieja and Almoradi fire-fighters after their vehi-

cle was involved in a collision with another car on the San Miguel-Blue Lagoon road. The British couple were whisked away to Torrevieja Hospital, whilst the people in the other car were only slightly injured.

PATIENCE VITAL TO Denuncias go high tech BECOME SPANISH Making a crime report has got that little bit easier, as the Guardia Civil has launched a new on-line service. You can now fill out a “denuncia” via the internet in connection with property, document and car thefts, but you will still have to appear at a local Guardia office within a day to validate your report. The website is www.guardiacivil.es and you need to look for the section marked as Formulario de Denuncias. The aim is to speed up the reporting of crimes, especially during the busy summer season.

A MAN who recently applied for Spanish nationality after the requisite 10 years of living in the country has been given an appointment for six years down the line. The Moroccan citizen, who has been a legal resident in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona province) since 2003 has been given an appointment for March 19, 2019 – nearly six years down the line and in fact, a public holiday, meaning the offices are unlikely to be open on that day. His solicitors, who are handling his citizenship application, say this means a non-EU foreigner who wishes to become Spanish needs to wait for 20 years to be able to do so – 10 years of legal residence, followed by six years to get an appointment and then another three for the paperwork to be processed. But the female civil servant at the foreigners' office in Barcelona assured the Moroccan applicant's legal firm that appoint-

ments for the year 2019 are standard practice, given the backlog experienced by the high number of non-Europeans seeking nationality to avoid the future headaches of having to renew residency in an economic climate where they may be out of a job when their permits expire, effectively disqualifying them from being able to renew them. His solicitors firstly thought there had been a mistake when they were given the appointment date. This date is purely to hand in all the paperwork in person, as it cannot be done by post or internet, to enable the foreigners' office to start examining and processing them with a view to accepting or denying the application three years later. It means the resident in question, identified only by his initials of A.E., will not know whether he has been accepted as a Spanish national for another nine years, or until 2022.

A 19 year old Madrid man died in a Murcia hospital on Monday after falling off a cliff top in Cartagena. The incident at Cabo de Palos saw him taking a photo before he slipped and plunged some 30 metres down the cliff during the middle of Sunday evening . The hour-long rescue operation proved to be difficult as the man lay on an inaccessible rock, which could only be reached by inflatable dinghies.

The National Police have arrested eight people who allegedly planned to kidnap, sexually assault and murder children. The one year old investigation into a child pornography network uncovered members who discussed online various sexual abuses they allegedly committed, as well as future depraved plans. Authorities said at least three children were in immediate dan-

ger. A raid led to the arrest of eight suspects between the ages of 25 and 50 in La Coruna, Pontevedra, Madrid, Gijon and Malaga. Four of them were immediately imprisoned and charged with intention to commit murder, sexual assault, molestation, corruption of minors, human trafficking and possession of child pornography.

A British man has been arrested in Cadiz on a charge of abusing his daughter forty years ago. She has been reportedly traumatised since then and finally made a police report recently. The National Police acted after a receiving a request from the UK authorities. The National Police detained the 69 year

old man following accusations that he sexually abused his daughter between 1972 and 1976. British police told their Spanish counterparts that she only overcame her trauma four months ago to muster enough courage to file a complaint. He was taken to Madrid, with the UK authorities beginning extradition proceedings.

The arrival of the summer hot weather has led to a warning that some prescription medicines can kill. The Spanish health ministry says that drugs can worsen the effects of high temperatures, making people more sensitive to hyperthermia and heat-stroke. These include various types of diuretic,

SSRI anti-depressants, diabetes medication and drugs for heart or circulatory disorders. Health chiefs also say that anyone who suffers dehydration or heat-stroke should not be given Paracetamol since it does nothing to make you better, and it can also aggravate liver damage.

British crushed in Pamplona Spain this week

A British man became the first casualty at Pamplona's annual running of the bulls fiesta on Sunday when he fell and was crushed beneath runners as they scrambled to escape a charging bull. John Bennett, 44, from Wolverhampton, said he nearly suffocated beneath a pile of people after falling the moment a lone bull turned on runners and provoked panic near the end of the morning run through the cobbled old streets of the northern Spanish city. More than a dozen thrill seekers ended up in a heap on top of him as the half-ton bull threatened to attack and sent runners scrambling for safety in the first of eight morning runs at the festival immortalised in Ernest Hemingway's novel, The Sun Also Rises. Mr Bennett suffered knee injuries and was being treated at the local hospital. "I remember running and tripping over people who had fallen to the ground as the bull charged towards us. It was complete and utter chaos," he said. "I was

crushed under people who fell on top of me. I felt my legs being twisted under me with all the weight. "There was a terrifying moment when people on me were crushing my face to the ground and I couldn't breathe. A first aid person managed to grab my hand and pull me to safety under a fence. He saved my life. I was suffocating under the weight of the people I had on top of me." Mr Bennett, a gas firm worker and father of one, had travelled to the fiesta with four friends. "It was the first time I've run and it will be the last. My wife Michelle knew I was coming here and pleaded with me not to run." Doctors said he was lucky not to have suffered broken bones and would be discharged later in the day. The first run of the annual event, during which the crowds swell to more than a million in the Spanish city, lasted just over four minutes. Fifteen people have been killed at the annual festival since records began a century ago.

GUILTY ON BOTH COUNTS A Muxtamel man has been found guilty of murdering his wife and setting fire to their house. The jury at his Alicante trial convicted him after hearing that he stabbed his 29 year old wife to death, and then burnt down the building in April 2011.

AGE OF CONSENT TO RISE The minimum age of sexual consent in Spain is rise from 13 to 15 – in line with many other European countries but still lower than recommended by the ministry of health, which advised raising it to 16. The change is all part of a package of legal reforms by the government which will also scrap what is known as 'safety custody', a form of house arrest which dangerous criminals are subjected to after finishing their sentences. Other changes include the tight-

ening up of long-term or permanent prison sentences and harsher penalties for employers who exploit immigrant workers.

SAFE FUN IN THE SUN Beach safety plans have been boosted in Murcia for the summer season. The “Copla” plan features some 122 lifeguard and first aid stations along the coast, with new facilities added in San Pedro del Pinatar. The whole project costs just under 700 thousand Euros.

MONTE’S MOVERS AND SHAKERS Los Montesinos has its own seismic earthquake monitoring system fully on-line, after a temporary unit was installed towards the end of last year. FUGITIVE’S NAKED PANIC

One of Britain's most wanted fugitives has been caught hiding naked in a panic room at his luxury Malaga villa. Mark Lilley, 41, from Warrington, Cheshire, went on the run in 2000 when he skipped bail during his trial. He was convicted in his absence and sentenced to 23 years in jail for masterminding a large-scale drug operation and firearm offences. Footage of the dawn raid in Málaga last Saturday shows armed officers climbing over a gate before running to Lilley's front door and smashing their way in with a battering ram. Lilley was found wearing no clothes and hiding in a panic room concealed behind a wardrobe in his bedroom, which featured a four-poster bed.

The fugitive is then filmed being handcuffed, with a strip of cloth wrapped around the lower half of his body. Tattoos covering large parts of his head, chest, arms and back are visible. The joint Spanish national police and Soca operation involved more than 40 armed officers. A police helicopter hovered above the villa in the Alhurín de la Torre area during the raid. Dave Allen, head of the fugitives unit at Soca, said: "Lilley was a dangerous man with access to firearms. He had evaded capture for a long time by moving around Spain and using false identities. Now he's behind bars where he belongs and extradition proceedings are under way.”

Baños Medieval Fair

Amongst the olive groves of Andalusia the lovely little town of Baños de Encina sits alongside a sparkling blue reservoir. Narrow cobbled streets lead you past whitewashed village houses, round by the church and up to the magnificent Moorish castle which was built here in the year 965 on the instructions of the notorious Caliph Hakim I. This is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and best preserved castles from this era. The fact that it is such a lovely little town in such lovely surroundings is a bonus. Now in the month of July you can experience the atmosphere enjoyed (and sometimes feared) all these years ago by the inhabitants of this charming little town, as they celebrate their annual medieval fair. For 3 days you can experience mingling with the townsfolk, many dressed in medieval costume. A medieval market lines the streets in the shadow of the castle. The mellow sounds of medieval instruments contrast with the loud hollow ring of the church bells. Medieval

dances are performed in the street. The town’s population consisting almost as much of donkeys, geese and other animals as by people. A falconer holds out a well protected arm to allow the owls and other birds of prey to land, and then sends them swooping, and screeching back up into the blueness of the sky. David’s Coachtrips are offering you all this for only135€ on an excursion going for 3 days 26-28 July. Using a 3* hotel half board and including wine and water. The hotel overlooks the town. This allows you to use the hotel balcony bar to overlook all the action while sipping a relaxing drink. Or for the more active a five minute walk will put you right in the centre of the action. You will soon forget which century you are in To reserve your place on this exciting, unique once in a lifetime break simply call David’s Coachtrips on (0034) 966785910. Crooked bat

Clean up this jungle!

WHY does Tony Mayes always miss the important bits? In his article Eat And Be Merry (Issue 124) he bats on about the payday loan companies but forgets to tell the readers that Adrian Beechcroft donated 800k to the Tory party via his equity group, including Wonga 5853%. Tell the gentleman we know he is a dyed in blue Tory like the rest of them. But please tell the whole story because he is the propaganda vehicle which I now will certainly tear into six by four inch squares and really will enjoy my ablutions. COLIN CAPPER

I live in n apartment at Eliseos Playa, where there are nine apartment blocks surrounding a garden area which is once again a total mess. This garden area belongs to someone who has no interest in its upkeep. About two years ago this owner was eventually contacted by the Town Hall and the overgrown area was suddenly dug up by a small digger. There was a man supervising. He instructed the digger to make a huge hole in the middle and proceeded to dig up all the overgrown bushes and grass and even some

trees, which were duly dumped in this big hole. Then it was covered over - leaving a few olive trees and palms. The palms were not trimmed, just left with all the dead branches on them. And now the grass and trees etc that were buried have, of course, grown again and once again we have a jungle of unkempt grass and bushes. Our sea views are also obstructed - plus this area does not help when people are trying to sell their property. All we want is for this area to be cleared (not dug up) and the trees and grass cut, to make it look decent. We residents cannot seem to find out exactly who this owner is. Our administrator has been asked constantly to try again to get the Town Hall to contact her, but once again no joy - or at least that is what we are told. This overgrown mess is also a dogs’ toilet, which smells. We have also had people living under the trees; last time they tried to cook and set the area on fire. So what can we do about this, is any one able to give us some hope. Just who do we contact and what do we do? LYNDA WILKINSON Eliseos Playa Torrevieja.

IN REPLY to the letter from Irene Shepherd (Issue 124), may I point out that we regularly send publicity to all of the papers. If they do not print it is hardly the fault of Age Concern. However, in one of the papers on sale on Fridays, the Information Office in Playa Flamenca Town Hall and the Information Office at La Marina Town Hall are both mentioned every week. There is a notice in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall

advertising the opening times on Tuesday and Thursday, and outside the Asturias Restaurant advertising the Friday opening times. The volunteers have attended several local events at Playa Flamenca Beach where they have handed out publicity leaflets and given advice. Cutting out carbs is the key to control Donna Gee’s completion of a six-month sponsored diet to raise funds for Crohn’s Disease research - plus her offer to share the secrets of her success - prompted a flood of emails. This selection continues on the next page. I HAVE with great interest followed your slimming column in The Courier, and I was very happy to note that you changed to a diet low in carbohydrates. I was thinking about writing to you to suggesting you to try a diet low in carbohydrates, as I know it works. Not only does a diet that reduces carbohydrates help people to lose weight, but many people with Diabetes 2 have even been able to reduce or stop medication. A LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) diet is the most popular diet in Norway and Sweden. A Swedish physician has a homepage in English at http://www.diet doctor.com/ I am a certified Low Carb Diet advisor from Norway, and I have been chairman in one of the local LCHF organisations in the Oslo area. Now I am living in La Marina (San Fulgencio). My husband and I have been practising a low carb lifestyle for more than 8-9 years. I would like to suggest that you continue writing about this way of eating, as I am sure that many people are reading your column

every week, and this could a great way to get the knowledge out to many people – thinking about how obesity is developing worldwide. If you wish some advice in keeping up with your new lifestyle, I will be happy to support you. ULLA VOLLENE, San Fulgencio HI DONNA, I have been reading your diet diaries in The Courier with great interest as I also embarked on my diet around the same time as you. Well done, what you've achieved is amazing, and that's why I need your help. I was also heading for the dreaded 15st. but with exercise and a 1200-calorie per day diet I lost 2st fairly easily but since injuring my knee about 5 weeks ago I have not been able to exercise and therefore have not lost any more weight despite practically starving myself (except for Saturdays, that’s my naughty day). You say that you cut out carbohydrates completely and I think I will have to follow

suit, but without potatoes, rice, pasta and bread what do you eat? Surely not just meat, fish and veg or salad. If you could perhaps just point me in the right direction of what I should be eating. My knees seem to be aggravated by the excess weight and probably won't heal properly until I lose some more of it, apparently just 1lb of weight loss relieves 5llbs worth of pressure from them. So, Donna, if you could help I would be most grateful. MARILYN HILLYARD HI DONNA, I have been so interested following your last six months and I am so happy for you that you have reached your goal. Congratulations. I am interested on two counts. I am overweight - and our grandson was diagnosed with Crohns aged three and a half, How is your granddaughter these days?, Our Michael is now nine and struggling at school.

For dinner, I’d prepare a saucepan full of green veg and carrots, boil it all for about ten minutes and serve it up with chicken, steak

, chops or liver - or if I felt fishy I’d go for oven-grilled salmon or mackerel. No limit on the amount of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, etc Initially, I thought that eating out would be a no-no. But I ended up dining in all sorts of restaurants at least twice a week…and still lost weight. In, fact, only once in the 22 weeks of my diet did I GAIN – and that was a result of being wined and dined by my daughters during a visit to England. Like most people these days, I love Indian and Chinese food . But while I’ve yet to find a AFTER decent limited-calorie Chinese meal, I found I could eat Tandoori dishes without putting the pounds on. Typically, I would order a Tandoori mixed grill with salad and a single poppadom with a small amount of mango chutney. No rice, curry sauce or nan bread, yet I’d enjoy the meal more than ever because I didn’t go home feeling bloated. In ‘normal’ restaurants, I’d order a steak and salad with perhaps a few grilled mushrooms. Desserts were one of the things I missed…though if hot cherries were on the Continued from Page 6 menu, I admit I did occasionIt is not that these children are stupid, more that they need ally indulge. WHILE THE CAT’S AWAY

I grew up in a crowded house. Domiciled with my parents in our dwelling was a curious collection of God's creatures. The ragged assemblage comprised a dishevelled dog, a careworn cat, a bedraggled budgie and, perhaps the weirdest and scruffiest of all, yours truly. I was just a kid (boy, not young goat) during that period of post-war austerity but I knew that even if I possessed few material things, I did have my due dollop of parental love. Indeed, I believe that in the affection stakes I was positioned between the cat and the budgie. Only joking. I came between the dog and the cat. Anyway, one night the cat went out and didn't come back. I was inconsolable when after four days Tiddles had still not returned. Mother sent Dad out to look for the missing feline. He took the dog with him. Rover returned home alone two hours later. Now Dad was missing. But not for long.

Mother used Rover to track Dad to the pub and she sent him home with a flea in his ear -- my Dad not the dog. Rover already had enough fleas of his own. 'Don't worry about the cat, Son,' said Dad. 'Tiddles has probably moved in with a family that's not as dysfunctional as us. He'll be happier there.' Mother had been staring at Dad for several minutes. 'May I inquire why you are constantly fidgeting like a jitterbug dancer?' she asked him. 'I've not seen you so restless since you suffered from piles. But that's all behind you now. So what's the problem?' Dad fiddled about with himself some more before replying: 'I thought I'd try on my army demob suit to see if it still fits. The trousers seem okay but the jacket feels lumpy on the shoulder.' Mother picked up her rolling pin and gave the lumpy bit a single thwack. We watched incredulously as the lump began to move. It travelled the length of

Dad's jacket sleeve and plopped out onto the kitchen table, landing with a dull thud. 'Oh, my goodness!' Dad exclaimed. 'You've only gone and concussed the budgie!' Poor Joey. Dad had opened the cage to stroke him and the bored bird must have thought Dad's sleeve was an escape tunnel. Joey had skedaddled to what he thought was freedom until he got trapped by Dad's shoulder pad. Mother's rolling pin had put paid to Joey's shenanigans. Still, that's the price one pays for being a cheeky boy, then. Anyway, while Mother made the budgie comfortable on the kitchen table, Dad ran out to the nearby phone box to ring the vet. 'Listen to me carefully, our David,' said Mother as she stroked the budgie's brow. 'I'm going to go after your Dad just in case he stops off at the pub again. I want you to keep your eye on our Joey. When he wakes up, give him a drop of fruit juice and tell him I love him.' And then she

added mysteriously: 'Tell Joey I shall never again roll out pastry.' 'Very well, Mother,' I sighed. 'But I didn't quite get the last bit. You've given up baking?' 'Correct,' said Mother, putting on her coat. 'Because of my guilt about clobbering the bird, I want you to take that flaming rolling pin and chuck it with all of your might into the dustbin. On second thoughts, drop it gently into the bin. It's late and I don't want to wake up the neighbours with the racket that would surely result when wood strikes metal heavily.' At which point Tiddles the cat came home. He leaped onto the kitchen table and stared at the little yellow lump lying there quietly. Joey, sensing that danger was lurking, opened one eye, squawked, flew off the table into his cage and pulled the door shut with his beak. By that time I was feeling both stressed and distressed. When I heard

strange footsteps in the hall I grabbed the rolling pin and hid behind the living room door as it slowly creaked open . . . Thwack! I looked down at the outstretched figure on the floor. 'Oh, my goodness,' I gasped. 'I've only gone and concussed t h e vet!'

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH Spanish 79 Hello again, as it´s getting warmer and summer has been here for some time I am going to give you a bit of a rest from learning anything new this week, so you may be wondering what we are going to do, it´s not another revision lesson more just a bit of fun to try and make learning Spanish more enjoyable and maybe make you say once or twice ´oh yes, I never thought of that!´ But first the answers to last weeks translations, how did you do? First was the future perfect tense: The weather will have improved tomorrow – el tiempo habrá mejorado mañana, I will have fixed the problem – habré arreglado el problema, I will have bought the milk – habré comprado la leche, we will have paid the bills for this month – habremos pagado las cuentas del mes, they will have changed their lifestyle (estilo de vida) – habrán cambiado su estilo de vida, in ten years the government will have reduced a lot of taxes – en diez años el gobierno habrá reducido muchos de los impuestos. Secondly there were some translations in the conditional perfect tense I would have helped you – ¡yo te habría ayudado!, I wouldn´t have sunbathed – no habría tomado el sol, the stone would have broken the window – la piedra habría roto la ventana, I would have woken up late every day – me habría despertado tarde todos los días, the teacher would not have cancelled the class – el profesor no habría cancelado la clase, she would have rested all day – ella habría descansado todo el día, I would have given you the money – te habría dado el dinero, we had probably walked five kilometers – habríamos caminado unos cinco kilometros.

Now I am going to go over some Spanish words or phrases that you most likely have heard but not even thought about the meaning, that is song lyrics and names. Firstly we are going way back in time to the 1950s and a song by Doris Day, I´m sure you all know ´Que será será´ and in fact the English translation, as in many songs comes next ´whatever will be will be´ we learnt the future tense in week 62 and this song always helps me remember which ending is for the third person (he/she/it) which is á: será = he/she/it will be and therefore I remember which is the first person singular (I) which is the é: seré = I will be, the other endings I tend to remember easier. Another song this time from the 80´s which helps with adjectives is the Madonna hit La isla bonita. It reminds us that the adjective not only comes after the noun but also agrees in number and gender with it. Then there is a line from the same song which, like que será será, is followed by the English

translation, I wonder how many of you actually hear ´¿Quién es esta niña?´ before ´who´s that girl?´ Next we are going to have fun with some famous Spaniards, somehow Tony Flags doesn´t sound as interesting as Antonio Banderas, Placido Domingo has both names that mean something he has a calming name: Placid Sunday; Fernando Towers is the footballer Torres but who is Penny Cross? Then the first names, who would name their child ´Peace´ or a boy ´July´? Of course the three are Penelope Cruz, Paz Vega and Julio Iglesias. But for a country where children are called Pains (Dolores), Jesus (Jesús), Bethlehem (Belen), Welcome (Bienvenido) and Pigeon (Paloma) I guess we shouldn´t be surprised at anything a celebrity is called. Another way to think Spanish and English is with place names, they are a good way of also reminding us of the adjective after noun rule in Spanish, such as Torrevieja - Old tower, Mil Palmeras - Thousand palm trees, and of course, Costa Blanca – white coast. So be sure to listen to Spanish names and see if they have a meaning, sometimes all it needs to remember Spanish is a buzz word or an idea explained in a different way. We all have different ways to remember and you need to use the best way for you, and carry on living la vida loca! Next week I am going to once again concentrate on pronunciation. We haven´t done it for over a year and it is very important, even my son makes mistakes when he is talking, he hears the letters wrong and when he asks me what a Spanish word means in English sometimes I don´t hear what word he is saying and he has to explain it, only then do I realise he has mis pronounced the word, so be clear when you´re talking and let´s see how we do with next week’s article.

THANK GOD FOR DOGS! One day, God made a dog. DOGS - OUR BIGGEST TEACHERS God made a dog, because he wanted to give us humans a friend for life. A friend that would be genuinely happy to see us, each and every day. A friend that would wag their tail in sheer delight, just because we looked at them. A friend that would ask for nothing in return. God made a dog, because when we were hurt or feeling down, he knew we would be grateful for their big adoring eyes and their paw on us, telling us it will all be alright. He knew that a dog has a special way of connecting with us through silent energy, not by ranting on or lecturing but by just being, just being there. God made a dog to defend us against criminals and to sniff out dangerous things that could hurt us, like bombs and to smell things that can make us very sick like cancer. In doing these duties, they keep us safe and alive. God made dogs to teach us humans what unconditional love we have powerful brains that can go into a negative mode which is living in the past or the future, so he made a dog to is really all about. He knew we would need to be taught how to love someone, remind us of the wonders of living right here in this moment. even though they may have hurt us in the past. A dog will To notice the butterfly or leaves floating in the beautiful sky, always give you another chance, and will show instant for- rather than being wrapped up in constant thought. God made dogs to remind us to switch our minds off and giveness. God made dogs to teach us to have no ego. He knew that give ourselves the relaxation time we need to become more ego is a very destructive element within us. It is the danger- pleasant human beings for our family and all people we ous element that always wants to be right, or always wants come into contact with. He knew that a mind that is constantto be first. It is a selfish element and dogs are here to show ly racing at 150 miles per hour can become angry and destructive. us how beautiful life can be without ego. God made dogs to teach us humans how to live in the God made dogs, because he wanted us all to appreciate moment. Not the past or the future but the now. He knew that every moment in life. A dog shows you their huge delight at

the prospect of simply going for a walk with you. Not because you are going to buy them anything, they are happy just because they are going to be by your side, which is where they always want to be. God made a dog because he wanted to teach us true friendship. He wanted us to learn how to be there for one another through good times and bad. How to never judge each other or gossip about one another. And because of this, God made a dog to teach us loyalty, which is one of their greatest gifts to us. God made a dog, so we would love, honour and cherish them. He also gave us the dog, so we would come to realize their intelligence and to give them the respect they deserve. Most importantly, God made a dog because he knew that we would all need a Guardian Angel. Someone to constantly love, guide and protect us. God made a dog and thank God he did. LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. 1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

MANY HAPPY MEMORIES It is hard to believe that it was a year ago that given out, so there was nothing else to think about. I left the I was writing about my sons fifth birthday in The rest to Dave and Maggie at the play area, as they put on a fantastic spread and nothing was too much trouble for them. Courier. I remember it as though it were yesterday! In fact, last weekend’s sixth birthday celebrations very much went along the lines of last year’s festivities. The party was once again held at Chasers Play Park, Dolores, and his friends came along for fun and food. It started at five o´clock and of course guests were still arriving well past six, but that didn´t stop the enjoyment for everyone there. My little fella got some great presents: - a mix of clothes and toys. In fact, he is still wearing clothes from last year as some parents bought a size too big, which is great because he always has something to wear, rather than outgrowing all his clothes at the same time! I wrote last year about Spanish parties and how different they are to British ones. Those of us with children will know the differences if we´ve ever been to a party, but the first time you turn up at one, it can seem a bit of a culture shock. This year, I was fully versed in not only the Spanish party system, but also in being the parent of the birthday child and I made sure everyone had a drink and was settled and the children were in the play area (minus shoes) and having a great time. A Spanish birthday has lots of possibilities; however I have only ever been to house parties or play areas. I´ve never been to a beach or park party and I´m not even sure if the Spanish have beach parties for their children. At least for this birthday there was no stress. I bought the cake a few days in advance and the invitations had been

Also, being single this year, I didn´t have the concern of whether a boyfriend was going to turn up; the pressure was off and as everything was down to me, handing over some of the responsibility was the best decision I could have made. I don´t actually remember being six years old, not even my birthday, with no photos to remind me. Even though my boy may not remember his special day in the future, I have ensured there are plenty of reminders for him. I hope at least one or two of the friends he has made in school will remain

at his side for many years to come and one day, when they are all older, I can show them the old photos and we can all have a laugh. When I was around 16, I had a Sunday job in a local Halfords store. I used to walk to work listening to the radio on my personal stereo and there was the same programme every Sunday morning. It was all songs from the past: - back then it was the 1980´s, so the music playing on this show was from the 60´s and 70´s. I remember thinking that one day in the future the modern music I was listening to at that time would be part of the same type of blast from the past segment, and of course it now is. Thinking about my son and his friends looking back on birthday photos, reminded me that we have to enjoy the time we are living in now because soon enough it will just be a part of our history, and we will be looking back, fondly reminiscing about today or tomorrow, about the big milestones in our lives. I know my little man will have many more chances to build a past and there are many milestones ahead for him, and as there are fewer and fewer for me, I will ensure that I am there for his and enjoying them as much as he does. I will remind him to enjoy the here and now, and not to live in the past. It can´t be changed, so just plan for the future but don´t worry about it! You have the power to choose. I hope these words will carry him through adolescence and into adulthood. I can´t wait for that special birthday when I can print off all his old birthday photos and plaster them wherever he celebrates. I am proud of my son and know that I will remain so throughout all the years and birthdays ahead of him.

CAIRO COUP: - IT SPHINXS I will happily wager that the bar talk of Torrevieja, Telford, or Timbuktu over the last fortnight or so hasn’t featured the slightest mention of the dramatic events in Egypt. Only the Sphinx at Giza has shown a modicum of respect proudly watching over the military coup in Cairo, which saw a democratically elected Muslim Brotherhood government removed after public protests. And not for the first time, the US and British governments are mired in blatant hypocrisy, saying how disappointed they are that a democratically elected administration has been overthrown. What they say in public is completely different to their private views, which must have had them rubbing their hands in glee that the army has moved in. Before the so-called Arab Spring of change two years ago and the army’s removal of President Hosni Mubarak, Washington and London thought that Mubarak was

the best thing in the Middle East since the opening of the Suez Canal. He danced their tune and was an opponent of radical Islam. Every western leader grovelled round him, but then when he was pushed aside, they all turned on him, as they shredded all their nice pho-

tos taken with the deposed Egyptian leader. They called him every name under the sun, and then joined in the calls for fair elections. The West got them, but not the result they wanted, as Mohammed Morsi won the ballot. Suddenly there was a very different flavour of

Egyptian government, with the country’s first ever democratically elected leader offering a very different approach. But he failed to tackle economic and social issues, and the more hardline members of his party started to hold sway, with promises of Islamification.

The yashmak had come off the true face of the Brotherhood, and that was too much for the opposition, and crucially for the army. I’m amazed that the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, could keep a straight face as he said that “the ousting of the

President was a dangerous thing”. That may have been true, but he hardly shed any tears over the leadership change. In America, there’s been the odd mumbling word or two from the Obama administration, but they’ve mainly been highfiving over the change. Do you honestly think that there were no CIA operatives within the Cairo crowds of protest prior to Morsi’s overthrow? What happened serves the interests of Washington and London perfectly, but what of the ordinary Egyptian person and camel in the street? They, as always, count for nothing. It cost close to £2m for the UK battle to deport the radical cleric, Abu Qatada back to Jordan to face charges of plotting bomb attacks in that country against American and Israeli tourists. Let’s hope that the treatment he gets in jail there is a lot harsher than the easy pushover he got in good old friendly Britain!

SUMMER SALADS SALAD NICOISE Ingredients

300g small new potatoes 100g fine green beans, trimmed 3 eggs, as fresh as you can get them 2 Baby Gem lettuces, outside leaves trimmed off 5 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 200g cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar small handful basil leaves 325g piece fresh tuna loin juice ½ lemon For the olive dressing 50g black olives, preferably Niçoise, pitted 5 marinated anchovies fillets 1 garlic clove juice ½ lemon 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Method

1. First, make the dressing. Tip the olives, anchovies and garlic into a large mortar and mash with a pestle until you have a very rough paste. Scrape into a bowl, if you like, stir in the lemon juice, olive oil and vinegar, then set aside. 2. Cook the potatoes in boiling water for 15 mins until tender, then drain and set aside. Cook the beans in boiling salted

water for 4-5 mins until tender with a slight crunch. Drain, tip into iced water, then drain again and set aside. Boil a small pan. 3. Halve the potatoes and heat 2 tbsp oil in a non-stick frying pan. Place the potatoes cut-side down in the pan and sizzle for about 4 mins until golden and crisp. Toss the potatoes in the pan to brown on all sides, then turn up the heat and add the tomatoes. Fry the tomatoes for about 1 min until just starting to blister, then season. Splash in 1 tbsp of the balsamic vinegar, then turn off the heat and scatter over the basil. 4. To cook the tuna, place a non-stick frying pan over a high heat, then turn the heat down to medium and add 1 tbsp oil. Season the tuna generously, then sear for 4 mins, leaving it undisturbed in the pan to brown. Turn over and continue to cook for 4 mins on the other side. This will give you very rare tuna. For rare, cook for 2 mins more on each side and for well done, add another 4 mins on each side. Set the tuna aside to rest for a few mins. 5. To serve, whisk the remaining oil and vinegar with the lemon juice in a small bowl and toss in the lettuce wedges. Place a spoonful of olive dressing into 2 serving bowls, arrange the potatoes and tomatoes over, then put a pile of beans on top. Slice the tuna in half at a slight angle and place each half on top of the beans. Wedge the lettuce around the outside, halve the eggs and position in between the lettuce. Dollop a small spoonful of olive dressing on each egg.

SUMMER COUSCOUS SALAD Ingredients 250g couscous 250ml vegetable stock, boiling 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1-2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil 300g courgettes, sliced on the slant 300g small vine-ripened tomatoes, halved 250g pack halloumi cheese, thickly sliced and then halved lengthways For the dressing 125ml olive oil 3 tbsp lime juice 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped fresh mint ½ tsp sugar

Method

1. Tip the couscous into a bowl, pour the boiling stock

over and mix well with a fork. Cover with a plate and leave for 4 minutes. Meanwhile, tip all the dressing ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Fluff up the couscous with a fork, stir in the chickpeas and follow with half the dressing. Mix well and pile on to a large serving dish. 2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large frying pan and fry the courgette slices over a high heat for 2-3 minutes until dark golden brown. Lift out on to kitchen paper. Now put the tomatoes cutside down into the pan, and cook for another couple of minutes until tinged brown on the underside. Top the couscous with the courgettes and then the tomatoes. 3. If the pan is dry, pour in a little more oil and heat it up, then add the halloumi strips and fry for 2-3 minutes, turning them over from time to time, until crisp and sizzled brown. Pile on top of the tomatoes, and drizzle with the remaining dressing. Serve as soon as possible.

GRILLED SALMON & MANGO SALAD WITH COCONUT DRESSING Ingredients 4 salmon fillets (about 125g each), boned and skinned 1 tbsp light soft brown sugar 100g green beans, trimmed 1 large ripe mango, peeled and cut into slices 2 shallots, very thinly sliced and broken into rings handful mint or coriander leaves 50g toasted desiccated coconut 1 thumb-sized red chilli, thinly sliced For the dressing 3 tbsp coconut cream juice 2 limes, plus wedges to serve 1 tbsp fish sauce 2 tsp soft brown sugar

Method

1. Heat the grill. Place the salmon, skin-side up, on a foillined tray, season well and rub the sugar on top. Grill for about 10 mins until cooked through. 2. Meanwhile, blanch the beans in boiling water for 1 min, drain, rinse in cold water and drain again. Arrange on 4 plates, then add the mango and shallots. 3. Mix the dressing ingredients in a small bowl. Break the salmon into a few pieces over each plate. Add the mint or coriander leaves, coconut and chilli to each. Pour over the dressing and serve with a lime wedge.

My question is, if I do as you say and click the reset button in tools etc. what will it do to programmes on the computer. I seem to remember from my school physics days that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Will it cause more problems than it cures in other words?

A

Hi Brian, resetting Internet Explorer is a pretty safe thing to do, it essentially puts it back to its original settings, disabling any downloaded toolbars and add-ons (which are usually the culprits responsible for making it unstable). If you tick the box to “delete personal settings” (which is usually not necessary to sort out Internet Explorer problems) then it will also delete things like your browsing history, temporary internet files and custom home pages. Hope that helps.

Q A

Hi Richard. I can't open GIF files for some reason and wondered if you could help. Many thanks Margaret

Hi Margaret, in order to open any type of file your computer needs to know which program to use to display the contents of the file. It looks like in your case your computer hasn’t been told what to use to open .gif files, I’m pleased to say this is a pretty simple problem to solve. Just right hand click the file that you are struggling to open and choose the option “open with”, you will be offered a number of programs to use, select Internet Explorer (this program certainly opens .gif files), tick the box to always open .gif files using this program and click ok. That should sort the problem out.

SURPRISING WAYS TO REDUCE WRINKLES Sleep On Your Back

Sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to "sleep lines" -- wrinkles that become etched into the top layers of skin and don't fade once you're up. Sleeping on your side leads to wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping face down gives you a furrowed brow. To cut down on new wrinkles, sleep on your back

them. And get savvy about sunglasses, which can protect skin around the eyes from sun damage and keep you from squinting.

Slather On Alpha-hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

These natural acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of pores, fine lines and surface wrinkles, especially around the eyes. And stronger forms of AHAs may help boost collagen production. Using AHAs can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so wear plenty of sunscreen every day.

Don't Over-Wash Your Face

and UVB rays, help reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone, and reduce redness. You have to use a skin product with the right type of vitamin C, though. L-ascorbic acid may be the best for wrinkle relief. You may also see a vitamin C ingredient listed as ascorbyl palmitate

Soy for Skin Care

Soy may improve the appearance of your skin and may even protect it, too. Studies suggest soy applied to the skin or taken as a supplement may help protect against or even heal some of the sun's damage. And it has also been shown to improve skin's structure and firmness, and to even out skin tone.

Tap water strips skin of moisture and natural oils that protect against wrinkles. Wash your face too often, and you wash away its protection. And unless your soap contains moisturizers, use a gel or cream facial cleanser instead.

Wear Your Vitamin C

Eat More Fish Like Salmon

Some studies have found that creams with vitamin C can raise collagen production, protect against damage from UVA

Salmon (along with other cold-water fish) is a great source of protein, one of the building blocks of great skin. It’s also an awesome source of omega-3 fatty acids. Experts say that essential fatty acids nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping minimize wrinkles.

Trade Coffee for Cocoa

Making the same expressions over and over -- like squinting -- overworks facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin's surface. Eventually the groove becomes a wrinkle. Keep those eyes wide: Wear reading glasses if you need

Try a wrinkle-reducing drink. In one study, researchers found that cocoa with high levels of two antioxidants (epicatechin and catechin) protected skin from sun damage, improved blood flow to skin cells, helped hydration, and made the skin look and feel smoother. Delicious!

THE POWER OF VITAMIN C DR MACHI MANNU’S ADVICE CLINIC Email your questions and comments to contact@medb.es

In 1979, Linus Pauling, a chemist and double Noble Prize winner caused great controversy when he claimed to have successfully treated cancer with high dose intravenous vitamin C. He was immediately branded a quack by the medical community. However since then, most of his theories on Vitamin C have been validated. Vitamin C is pivotal in maintaining health not just in humans but in all mammals. Nearly all mammals make large amounts of vitamin C. The goat produces up to 13 grams of Vitamin C every day. Only human beings, some primates and guinea pigs are unable to synthesise vitamin C, and rely on external sources for their daily supply. Dr Pauling offended the medical establishment by suggesting that we needed much higher doses of Vitamin C, and questioning the rationale behind the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of nutrient. Many researchers now agree with Dr Pauling, believing that the RDA of

many nutrients especially vitamin C should be in grams and not milligrams. Vitamin C is essential for synthesising collagen; a complex protein needed to build supporting tissues such as blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bones. Nearly a third in weight of our bones is collagen. This is why mild deficiency of Vitamin C is associated with symptoms such as muscle and joint discomfort or pain. Severe deficiency of Vitamin C causes scurvy, a debilitating disease with symptoms such as: spongy and bleeding gums, easy bruising, poor wound healing, dry skin and extreme weakness. Vitamin C prevents the formation of sorbitol in diabetics. When sorbitol accumulates in the body it destroys tiny arteries, thereby causing diabetic complications that affect the eyes, heart and kidneys. Taking 2 grams of vitamin C daily reduces sorbitol build-up in the body by 44%. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are substances

that neutralise toxins known as free radicals that have been linked to many diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Vitamin C is also known to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels and also prevents cholesterol oxidation, a major risk factor for heart disease. Vitamin C is also an important antioxidant in the eye with levels in the lens more than 60 times that found in circulation. It prevents cataracts from forming. One study, ‘The Nurses Health Study’ found that 60% of early cataracts occurred in women who had not taken vitamin C supplements. Vitamin C is widely used to treat and prevent the common cold due to its powerful antiviral properties. It also improves asthma symptoms by increasing lung capacity and function. In fact, low levels of vitamin C in the diet are as harmful for lung function as smoking cigarettes for 5 years. Vitamin C stimulates the growth of bone cells. Not surprisingly, researchers

have found a strong link between low levels of vitamin C and reduced bone density at the hips. This link seems to be strongest among women between 55 and 64. Vitamin C also reduces the risk of cartilage loss and disease progression in people with osteoarthritis. High doses of Vitamin C is known to stop the growth of Helicobacter pylori; the main cause of gastritis. It also protects the skin from the damaging effects of UV light. Vitamin C supplements are cheap to buy, however consumer protection agencies report that over 90% of all supplements sold in health shops and pharmacies are of such low quality that only 5 % of active ingredients are absorbed into the body. DON’T POP THOSE PILLS FOR EASY ZZZZ’S Q

I suffer from restless legs syndrome (RLS), and have done for about 12years. My UK doctor prescribed Gabapentin which I took up to six months ago. They alleviated the symptoms (which were spiders crawling up my legs and pain). My Spanish doctor said I shouldn't be on Gabapentin and prescribed Rivotril, 0.5mg, which again seems to control the symptoms. I have tried to come off them but I find I cannot sleep and after three or four days I start taking them again. I find that even after a good night sleep I am still very tired. Can you recommend anything that I can do or take instead of my medication?

A

The symptoms you describe of spiders crawling up your legs as well as creeping sensations are typical symptoms of Restless leg syndrome (RLS). In addition, sufferers may also experience pins and needles, burning sensation, pain travelling along the leg, and an irresistible urge to move the legs. The exact cause is not known, but some researchers have suggested that it arises when oxygen supply to tissues is poor. Other researchers think it occurs when nerves are irritated by external factors such as smoking, anxiety and tiredness. In fact a known trigger of restless legs is extreme fatigue. A number of chronic diseases are also known to trigger the disorder, such as diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and kidney disease. RLS is more common than thought, affecting 1 in 20 people especially women. Gabapentin is a drug of choice by doctors for treating convulsions and epilepsy, perhaps that’s why your Spanish doctor stopped the prescription. However Gabapentin is used by some doctors because it reduces excessive nerve firing that is associated with restless legs. Rivotril belongs to the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, the same as valium. Doctors will prescribe them if they think that a patient’s complaint is in the mind. Benzodiazepines have serious side-effects including depression and suicidal thoughts. They are highly addictive especially

on long term use, and will cause severe side effects if suddenly stopped. This is because benzodiazepines such as rivotril function by altering the delicate balance of brain chemicals or neurotransmitters needed for normal brain activity. There is also evidence that long term use of such drugs can damage the structure of the brain irreversibly. You should speak to your doctor about tailoring off your dose over a period of time. This will give your brain time to readjust its balance. Your lack of sleep is most likely due to low levels of brain chemicals such as melatonin. The solution is not sleeping pills, but to replenish brain chemical stores using amino acids. Laminine is a supplement that contains all essential amino acids, but more important, a protein known as Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) which helps the body repair itself. Fibroblasts are reserve cells found in some major organs in the body such as brain, nerves, bone, muscle etc. In my experience it is effective against many chronic diseases, especially those related to the nerves and worth a try when hospitals fail. Laminine is an extract of 9 day fertilized chicken eggs. It is safe and has no known side effects. Laminine promotes healthy sleep; deep restorative sleep, and will also help you come-off rivotril.

Q

I am a 70 yr. old female and have had an under active thyroid which was diagnosed over 30 years ago. I was prescribed thyroxine which the doctor changed to eutirox when I moved to Spain 10 years ago. I have never felt any benefit from either medication. I have a constant weight gain problem, very dry skin on my hands and arms and the lower half of my legs and feet. My hair is going thinner and thinner, I have virtually no eyebrows and my finger nails will not grow. I also take sertralina for depression and I am not sure if this is also caused by my thyroid. The Doctor always says that my blood tests are ok so I wondered if you have any suggestions of anything that I could try.

The Reflexology Technique

Reflexology is one of the most popular and unique forms of alternative healing available today. The term reflexology refers to the application of pressure, movement and stretching to the feet and hands. These pressure points on the extremities in turn affect the corresponding parts of the body. To reflexologists, the feet and hands are a mirror of the body, and these professionals can use their knowledge to break down patterns of stress and pain throughout the body. There are many theories for how and why reflexology works, but the best approach is often to look at how the nervous system works. When pressure is applied to the feet, this pressure generates a signal which travels through the peripheral nervous system. From there, it enters the central nervous system, and it is then processed in various regions of the brain. After that, the sensation is relayed to the organs of the body, where the necessary adjustments in allocation of resources are made. After all this has occurred, a response is made and sent out to the motor system. That message is then sent forward and used to adjust overall tension level or tone of the body. When applied properly, that tone will reset to a lower level, reducing in a lessening of stress and less strain on the body’s vital immune system. The reflexology technique is applied to the feet and hands, as every pressure point on the feet and hands is thought to correspond to some part of the body, including organ systems, limbs and torso. The most obvious benefit of reflexology is the reduction of stress, with all its attendant benefits. Since the feet and hands set the level of tension for the entire body, reflexology uses the feet and hands to interrupt that stress level and reset it. Stress reduction is a vital part of good health, since high stress levels play a role in a number of serious diseases and chronic conditions, among them heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. In addition to its usefulness as a stress reliever, reflexolo-

gy is also being studied as a possible way to treat and prevent other forms of illness. While the usefulness of reflexology in treating and preventing disease is still being studied, its stress relieving techniques alone provide value to any health care plan. Reflexology is an excellent adjunct to standard medical treatment, and it should never be used as a substitute for the advice of a health care preventative. It is best to use reflexology as a complementary procedure to standard health care screenings. While it is possible to study the charts and learn to do reflexology on oneself, most people prefer to have regular sessions with a professional reflexologist. Even for those who attend regular professional sessions, however, it is a good idea to learn to do some reflexology on their own. For instance, using this technique on oneself, say at your desk or in the office, is a great way to relieve the stress of a particularly challenging day. The typical professional reflexology session will last from 30 minutes to one hour, and only the removal of the shoes and socks is required. Some reflexologists use a chair, while others use a table. While some practitioners use oil, most do not. The reflexologist uses pressure, stretching and movement techniques to work through the foot in a methodical manner. The entire surface of both feet is generally worked in a single reflexology session. The reflexologist will work within the comfort zone of the patient, as applying too much pressure could be harmful or lead to an injury. It is important for the patient to communicate with the reflexology therapist about the amount of pressure that is desired. A quality reflexology session should leave one feeling relaxed and well. The effectiveness of a reflexology session can often be measured by how long that feeling of wellness and relaxation lasts.

A

I wonder if you are taking the appropriate dose of thyroxine. Perhaps you are taking a smaller dose of eutirox than you should. Have you discussed your symptoms with your doctor? Do you have regular thyroid level checks? Getting the dose of thyroxine right can be very tricky for doctors because even when blood levels of thyroxine is normal, there may still be thyroid problems in a condition known as – sub clinical hypothyroidism. However, there are also a number of disorders that can cause the symptoms you describe and even exist alongside your thyroid problems. Amino acids are vital for building many of our organs such as skin, hair and finger nails. Sulphur is equally necessary for building these organs, and is integrated into the structure of some amino acids. Our bodies produce amino acids when we digest proteins. Proteins are abundant in animal foods, but the problem is that of digestion and absorption. People suffering from stomach and intestinal disorders are unable to properly digest and absorb amino acids, leading to deficiencies. Minerals such as zinc, copper and manganese are also needed to maintain healthy skin, hair and even regulate weight. Your symptoms can also be caused by deficiency of these minerals. Sertralina belongs to a class of drugs known as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). They are mainly prescribed for depression; however they are highly addictive and can be extremely difficult to come-off. A patient recently told me that she felt as if sparks were flying off her head when she forgot to take her prescription for a few hours. Sertralina and other SSRIs also lower the levels of useful brain chemicals. Laminine is a supplement that contains all essential amino acids, helping the body produce adequate amounts of brain chemicals and hormones. It is the lack of brain chemicals such as serotonin that causes depression. PLEASE EMAIL contact@medb.es

Benefits of Drinking Fresh Juice

Fresh juice is a wholly different thing than processed juice. The health benefits of fresh juice are just utterly amazing when compared to really any other form of drink. We will take a brief look at some of them here. The first benefit of fresh juice is that it contains such a high degree of the nutrients and vitamins that are so absolutely good for us as humans. It invigorates the body and the juice immediately begins to do its healing and energizing work on your body. Another benefit is that you can combine so many different types of fruit and even vegetables in your drink in order to catch nutrients that are present in this or that one. So, with one fell swoop you can attack the sickness in your body on many different fronts. My husband frequently makes juice that contains carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, and kale all in one glass. These vegetables are so good for you, but it would be hard to sit down and eat a whole plate of these. It's no trouble to drink them though; the sweetness of the carrot juice makes the whole concoction delicious. Another health benefit of drinking fresh juice is that you can get a lot more vitamins into you at one time. It is a lot easier to drink five oranges than it is to eat five oranges. The juice goes down faster and you don't have to chew it. Your body doesn't even have to expend energy breaking it up, because that has already been done by a mixer. And while it's not technically a health benefit I'd be remiss to not mention how delicious fresh fruit juices are when they are made with a juicer. My family has a tradition of drinking fresh squeezed orange juice with our breakfast on Christmas morning. This past year, my husband juiced the oranges in our new juicer and we quickly learned that we had never really tasted orange juice before. The juice was so light and creamy; it was really like drinking dessert. Studies have shown that a regular diet of fresh juice helps to prevent cancer, heart disease, and other ailments from occurring. It is really amazing that such a simple thing as natural juice can have such a powerful effect on a complex system like the human body. And why wouldn't you drink it, when it can taste so good. Isn't that the most important part of eating.

OLD DEADBEATS KILL BRITAIN’S SPIRIT

One of the worst aspects of living in Britain is that no matter what you want to do, there is someone else trying to stop you doing it. Britain is a nation of moaners and whingers and there's a multitude of awkward sods doing their utmost to thwart progress and change. Yes, that's the price we pay for democracy - every single minority interest must have their day - their democratic right. But so often it's a right pain in the neck. It doesn't matter what it is - from building a by-pass to a bottle neck, to someone trying to improve their business, there's someone out there ready to object to it and in the process causing months if not years of delays and additional cost. The trouble is that government: - national and local, thrive on it - if they have someone objecting to something, the huge bureaucratic machine grinds into action. Don't forget, the more a decision can be delayed by endless discussion and meetings, the more public sector jobs can be created or preserved. I wonder how many of the brightest ideas from British inventors have been ground down by the dead hand of bureaucracy and pathetic politicians to such an extent they have given up or moved abroad. The nimby army has currently been activated like never before in the UK. The trigger is the demand for more housing, and there is nothing like the prospect of a view from the home being replaced by a housing estate to have peo-

ple on the march. It's happening in many villages and small towns in Britain - plans being put forward for hundreds and thousands of new homes. And pressure for more building is increasing, with the news that house prices are rising. There's no doubt there's a demand, thanks to immigration and the lack of affordable house building for a generation. But people now living in their comfortable surroundings don't want to share that with others. I found it amusing to hear TV interviews with people who were immigrants ten or more years ago campaigning to prevent more coming in, some not wanting even more immigrants living in their areas fearing overcrowding; others fearing they would undercut them for jobs. Where we live in the UK, the main road is a single carriageway with many sharp bends. Used by more and more heavy vehicles, the road is just downright dangerous. Anyone in their right mind would want to see a new road to be built to by-pass this horror. But what has happened? All along it there are signs saying "no to A29 by-pass". Why? It's a combination of nimbys and environmentalists, both fearing that land between the new and old road will be used for housing. Just a mention of nuclear power stations, windfarms, high-speed rail links, new motorways and mobile phone masts is enough to get the nimbys on the rampage, quickly assisted by

environmentalists, followed by the ‘rent a mob’ and great British unwashed and heaven help:- a farmer supporting a GM crop. Yes, Britain, probably more than anywhere else, is the very worst place to start something new - because there are so many Brits who fear change and will fight to preserve the status quo. So sad, when you think that it was the enterprise spirit in Britain not so many generations ago which launched the industrial revolution. Here’s another example of the dead hand which has swept the UK. For 20 years, a West Sussex fisherman has sold his catches on the beach. He had a storage box with a water supply and a display slab. Then he asked the council for permission to have kiosk into which he could have a fridge/freezer. He had been asked by his customers if he could sell items he had not caught himself - like crabs, mussles, and crayfish tails. In came the objections - anyone would have thought he was asking for the crown jewels. Listening to the residents overlooking him, you would have thought he was going to open a fish market. One resident in particular objected with a passion, according to the fisherman - and surprise, surprise, that main objector was a councillor. It took two years to get permission, and finally he now has a thriving business, and customers have a full range of seafood to buy. Good for him - but curses on the dead hand of British over-the-top democra-

already dead person to have those organs used? I wish these religious meddlers would butt out and, for once, leave politics to people with a lot more common sense and basic humanity. A person who has died is dead. Those organs are of no further use to that dead person, but could mean life for someone else. That should be the only consideration - and if I had my way no-one should have the right to opt out of donating organs. And, for the record, both my wife and I carry donor cards and have done so for many years. This is an example where, sadly, religious people sometimes cannot see a greater good perhaps hampered by their own dogma. Another far more serious example is in Egypt, where an entire country is at the point of civil war because of religion. The army had to step in to separate those who want a secular society from those who want religion to dictate their lives. The clear message is religion and politics do not mix. When it does, there's Hats off to the Welsh more often than not conflict. The Conservatives have been thwarted by the stupid Lib Dems from freeing ourselves from the European Court of Human Rights. Labour before them could have done something because they had a parliamentary majority, but you would never get that sort of decisive action against an unwanted alien. As a result it has cost the country a fortune having to put up with what Cameron described it the circus of human rights lawyers. A plague of curses on all of them. I detest it when people chatter away on mobiles beside me - they're talking loudly and it's just bad manners. We see so many, particularly younger people who care nothing about anyone other than themselves and this lovely madam in Sainsbury's is a classic example. Not content with her apology and the £10 voucher, she announced she would be going to rival Waitrose to shop in future. My comment? A typical attitude of a 20-something female - criticised, so without the slightest care, hot-foots it to a rival. Blokes take note and be very aware!

You can tell that we're in what newspaper editors call the "silly season", when you get national newspaper headlines trying to make something out of nothing. "Exclusive: Less than ONE PER CENT of police officers caught speeding or going through red lights are prosecuted" was the screaming headline. You could imagine - my hackles were going right up reading this. I had a comment in mind..."don't do as I do, do as I say", until I read a few paragraphs down the story and realised that this was not off-duty police committing offences. It included police responding to crimes on 999 shouts! It does the newspaper industry great harm, when papers have to resort to this sensationalism to keep readers. Of course, police have to be extremely careful when they do exceed speed limits or cross red lights, but police drivers are specially trained by police instructors and their training greatly exceeds that of ordinary drivers. I went through the course with a police driving instructor, so I know what I'm talking about here. For the record - I failed, not because of my driving but because I kept my foot for too long on the clutch pedal. Yes, standards are that high among police drivers. And if police had to observe every rule of the road, they couldn't respond to crime and the public would be at much greater risk than they are.

DONKEY OATY IS NO TROUBLE AFA’S THANKS

Sancho Panza the donkey has a new friend at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales, and it’s no surprise that he’s called Donkey Oaty! Sancho’s pal, originally called Trouble, was dramatically rescued from a Catral riding school with just minutes to go before he was destined to go to an owner that had ill-treated animals in the past. All ten horses at the school were sold to good new homes, but the donkey was left with a troubled future. A trailer was immediately sent to pick up the animal and to take him to his new abode in Rojales, shortly before the deadline for his transfer was up. Trouble quickly struck up a friendship with Sancho Panza, and so it was a no-brainer to re-name him Donkey Oaty! You can see the donkeys and the rest of the animals at the Centre every Sunday between 1pm and 5pm. Entry is free of charge.

Two people synonymous with Carl’s Bar in Los Montesinos, have let their deaths mean that at least the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s charity could benefit from collections at their funerals. The previous owner, Shim, who passed away earlier this year, along with regular customer and Alzheimer’s sufferer, Alistair Watt, both insisted that donations be made to Torrevieja AFA at their funerals instead of the customary flowers. A generous total of 310 Euros was raised and Jayne from the Carl’s Bar team received a certificate of appreciation from Torrevieja AFA treasurer, Judy Ferris. She paid tribute to the work of the bar in raising money for the organisation with future special events planned there.

The event was hosted by members of La Siesta’s Anglican community who welcomed members and friends from the other local churches that make up the Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul. Entertainment was provided by Cathy Carson and members of the TAABS choir.

The Ladies Friendship Group affiliated to La Siesta Church undertook to support Reachout this year. Using a thousand euros of money raised from last year’s Christmas Fayre. This enabled Reachout to use it as part of the cost of a catering oven as one of their aims is to provide a hot lunch each day in the recently opened dropin centre. The group went one step further and now provide the “lady-power” and part cost of a hot meal for approximately 50 one day a week. “Manpower” often provides the washer up. The picture shows Gill Savage and Jean Wallace in action. The current financial climate is partly responsible for creating the need which the dropcentre endeavours to meet in the form of basic creature comforts and sustenance. If you would like to support the Ladies Friendship Group in cash or kind use the following email address to make contact:- joewallacetrombone@gmail.com Breakfasts and lunches are provided daily to customers registered with Reachout and if you want to help on a larger scale they would be pleased to hear from you. JOHN TERRY'S DAD CHARGED AS RACIST THE FATHER of Chelsea footballer John Terry was charged Tuesday with carrying out a racist attack on a man after a scuffle in the City of London. Ted Terry, 59, was arrested earlier this year following the incident on Fenchurch Street in capital's Square Mile. He was charged with two racially motivated offences when he answered bail at Bishopsgate Police Station. He is accused of committing a racially aggravated common assault and a public order offence. Two other men, Tudor Musteata, 47, and Stephen Niland, 36, were also charged following the fracas at 8pm on March 22. They both face a single allegation that they caused a ‘fear of violence’ that was racially aggravated. City of London Police, which is responsible for the inquiry, declined to elaborate on exactly what is alleged to have taken place. A spokesman said: 'As charges have now been brought we are unable to comment further on the nature of the incident.' It is not the first time that the Terry family has had a run in with the law. Last year, John Terry, for the former

Daily Mail

England captain, was cleared of racially abusing fellow footballer Anton Ferdinand. The defender denied making the comments to the Queens Park Rangers player during a match at Loftus Road the previous year. The verdict brought to an end a long

saga which saw Terry stripped of the national captaincy and England manager Fabio Capello resign in protest. It was the latest controversy in a chequered career for John Terry, which included his arrest following a fight at a nightclub in 2002. He was later cleared of four charges, including affray and wounding with intent. John Terry and Chelsea teammates were also accused of drunkenly mocking American tourists after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. In November 2010, Ted Terry suffered a serious head injury when he was attacked by fans from rival Tottenham Hotspur. He was rushed to hospital for stitches after the late evening attack at Upminster Station in East London. Terry’s mother Sue, 55, and motherin-law Sue Poole, 59, were cautioned for shoplifting from Tesco and Marks & Spencer in 2009. Terry, of Grays, Essex, Musteata, of Greenwich, South East London, and Niland, of Romford, Essex, were released on bail. All three men were ordered to appear before City of London Magistrates’ Court on July 23.

MIND THE LOG

A MAN who kicked what he thought was a log got a nasty comeback. The 'log' was actually an alligator, who didn't take too kindly to being pelted, and bit back. Andrew Hudson, 17, was swimming in Florida's Little Big Econ State Forest at the time when he decided to kick the 10ft log. At this point, it started moving and the alligator launched an attack on the teen, ripping open two gashes on the side of his

skull. Pal Mark O'Shea said: "He kicked and started punching the gator. "That's what he told me happened when he was under the water." Fortunately, a bleeding Hudson managed to break free of the deadly jaws and managed to make it back to shore. O'Shea ran half a mile to report the attack. Hudson had several puncture wounds to his head and had to have stitches and staples.

I am black and I don’t bite

A CAFE owner has put up a sign warning customers who are 'allergic to black people' not to enter her business after becoming fed up with patrons walking out when they see the colour of her skin. Martha-Renee Kolleh has placed the sign on the door of the Yeanon Cafe, in Ossett, West Yorkshire, which reads 'I am a black woman...If you are allergic to black people, don't come in. 'But, if you prefer quality wholesome meals in a pleasant and clean environment, come in. I don't bite!' The single mother-ofthree said she put it there because of the way some customers have treated her. She said: 'When they open the door, they see a black face. I put [the sign] there because of the way people treat me in Ossett. 'Some people find the sign amusing and they say

"oh yes, it's about time you put that up", so I think they all realise what's going on here. 'Some others just read it and walk away. I've heard one or two swearwords as well regarding the notice.' A spokesman for Wakefield Council said they were 'obviously concerned' by the issue, which they had not been made aware of before. The spokesman added: 'I would urge the business involved to get in touch with us as soon as possible.' Ms Kolleh has run the cafe for two years, serving a mixture of British, African and Caribbean food. She said a lot of people in Ossett had supported her, but if business did not improve she would have to close by autumn. 'They just open the door of my cafe and once they take a look at me they walk out,' she said.

Fancy a dip? THOU shall not covet thy neighbour’s wife. It can lead to some unexpected consequences. A Tennessee man found this out the hard way when a woman dipped in his pool, naked, as her husband robbed his home. As he gawked at the swimmer for a good 20 minutes, the burglar got to work. He stole jewellery, medication and a firearm from the home in Crossville on June 27. How it started

The couple, who live nearby, approached Stephen Amaral, with the wife asking if she could swim in his pool. The wife sent her husband to get her cigarettes, and then asked Amaral if he would be bothered if she swam naked. Not a problem, Amaral said. "I went and got her a towel, she dried off and all of a sudden she was soaking wet again," Amaral said. "I escorted her outside and invited her to church, but

she said she didn't have time for that, she wasn't ready for that." Sentimental value Amaral said not only did he feel violated; he lost an item that had sentimental value. The gun was a service weapon, used while he was a Mississippi deputy. He had planned to pass it down to his grandchildren, he said. Two suspects have been identified, presumably clothed, but no arrests have been made. The estimated cost of the stolen items: $2,000. That's a pretty steep price for a pool show.

Organ donor wakes up A MUM thought to be dead opened her eyes as surgeons were about to remove her organs for transplant. Colleen Burns, 41, was being prepared as a donor when she showed a flicker of life – and went on to make a miraculous recovery. The mother of three had been admitted to hospital following a drug overdose – and was later pronounced dead. Medics ordered her body to be taken to theatre to harvest her vital organs. But they failed to carry out a number of basic tests – including an examination to see if her brain was still functioning. The blunder led to her heartbroken family giving permission for her life support to be switched off and her organs donated.

In reality Colleen was in a coma brought on by the drugs she had taken. After her shock awakening she was discharged two weeks later from St Joseph’s hospital in New York. The case, which happened in October 2009, only came to light following an investigation by journalists – and the hospital has now been fined £4,000 by health chiefs for its failings. Troubled Colleen never bothered to sue over the incident. And, sadly, 16 months later she took her own life. Her mother, Lucille, said: “She was so depressed that it really didn’t make any difference to her.” A hospital spokesman said: "We have learned from this and made changes.”

DRIVER’S DEATHLY SNOOZE Nine people died and five were seriously injured last Monday when the bus they were travelling in, went off the road and overturned close to the central city of Avila. The driver was arrested after falling asleep at the wheel, and has been charged with suspected homicide and causing injury through negligence. Survivors described how the bus was being driven "above the speed limit" and was coming down from a mountain pass when the driver lost control and careered off the highway. The vehicle ended up on one side, with a buckled safety barrier preventing it from sliding further down a slope by the road. The entire right-hand side of the bus facing the slope was peeled open; windows shattered; and buckled support pillars left exposed.

The broken windscreen hung open like a curtain. The driver of the vehicle, operated by the Cevesa bus company, walked away from the crash unscathed, with the spokesman describing him as an "experienced driver". The 40-seater bus had 32 passengers on board and was on its way to Valladolid when the accident happened just outside the small town of Tornadizos at 8.30am on Monday morning. It was the worst bus crash to occur in Spain for the last five years. The last similar incident to result in multiple fatalities was in April 2008 when a bus carrying Finnish tourists hit a truck and overturned in Benalmadena, near Malaga killing nine passengers.

Ortega must pay €33m after losing tax battle

A Spanish Court rules against Zara founder but judges said there was no concealment. Spain's richest man, Amancio Ortega, will have to pay 33 million euros for back taxes owed from 2001 to 2003 after a Supreme Court rejected his final appeal in a dispute with tax auditors. In their ruling published last Thursday, the justices said that there had been a misinterpretation of the law regarding the taxes filed by Ortega, founder of Zara and former chairman of Inditex, which "does not imply fraud" or any attempt of concealment. The controversy has its roots from the time Inditex was first listed in the Ibex 35. The estimated 1.3 billion euros that Ortega made through the sale of part of his shares were reinvested into two real estate investment companies with variable capital, known as

Simcavs: Alazán and Keblar. Simcavs and Sicavs are partnerships that enjoy special tax privileges, paying one percent on profits in the same way as investment funds and other collective investment institutions. The Finance Ministry did not question the tax rate applied on profits from these two Simcavs, but rather the taxes on the companies' total assets. Ortega's financial advisors designed a structure in which the Simcavs were linked to other family businesses. Tax auditors in Galicia concluded that "this was a situation where the rules were abused." Ortega appealed the ruling before the Galician regional High Court, which on March 3, 2011 determined he owed 32,789,394 euros. That decision was upheld by the Supreme Court on May 21.

SPEEDY LESSON

A REGIONAL head of traffic affairs has resigned after being caught driving at 160 kilometres per hour along a motorway. Narcís Clé, leader of Catalunya's traffic department for the province of Girona, was pulled over by the Mossos d'Esquadra – the region's answer to the Guardia Civil – doing 40 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on the AP-7 just days after fronting a radio campaign urging drivers to stick to the limits to help prevent fatal accidents. Clé had in fact been on his way back from a meeting about the same issue when he was caught speeding. He was fined 300 euros and lost two points from his licence. Almost immediately after the incident, Clé decided to 'do the decent thing' in order to save face and sent a letter to regional director of traffic, Joan Josep Isern, standing down from his post. Isern accepted Clé's resignation.

MISSING CÓRDOBA KIDS DAD MAINTAINS INNOCENCE THE GANGS OF ALICANTE

José Bretón denies murdering his children in revenge against estranged wife Ruth Ortiz The prosecution never believed the version offered by José Bretón, the main suspect in the disappearance of his two small children on October 8, 2011. Although he claims that he lost them in a park, both the attorney and the private prosecution say that he murdered them as revenge against his wife, Ruth Ortiz, who had asked him for a divorce. "He killed Ruth and José out of hatred for his wife, because he could not go on controlling her," said the prosecutor, María Ángeles Rojas, in her final statements at the close of the trial against Bretón. Rojas is asking for a 40-year prison sentence against him for killing his six- and two-yearold children with sleeping pills, then getting rid of their bodies in a bonfire that he made at his parents' rural estate outside of Córdoba. Investigators found indications that the bonfire had been turned into an oven to increase the temperature and eliminate all remains of what was burnt there. However, teeth and bone remains were found that forensic experts assert belonged to humans aged around two and six. Meanwhile, Bretón's defense sowed doubts about the evidence, and suggested that his client may have possibly drugged his children but then handed them over to a mysterious individual on the highway, "because Bretón may have wanted to hurt his wife in this way, but I am sure that Bretón is not a murderer," said his lawyer José María Sánchez de Puerta.

At the end of the session, Bretón took the stand to issue a final statement. "I am completely innocent," he said. The accused asked the lawyer representing Ortiz in her private prosecution, Maria del Reposo Carrero, if she could be "100 percent sure that all of these accusations are true." "I am clearly not as intelligent as has been said," Bretón continued, adding that "after 21 months I find it incredible that nobody knows where Ruth and José are."

A BLAZE broke out last Saturday night in the future BBVA headquarters in Madrid. The fire in the tower block, in the Las Tablas district of Madrid, created a column of smoke that could be seen from several kilometres away. A total of 12 fire engines were called out to deal with the inferno on the top floor of the 19-storey, 93-metre-high block. Nobody was hurt in the blaze, but a SAMUR ambulance was on standby just in case. It was due to house the BBVA bank's head office from 2015 onwards.

The pressure has continued to build on the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, over allegations that he benefitted from a slush fund before he came to power in 2011. The El Mundo newspaper published a page on Tuesday from what it said were original, hand-written ledgers implicating Rajoy in the scandal. Spain's ruling Popular Party hotly repeated its denials of any knowledge of the accounts, photographs of which were published on the front and inside pages of El Mundo. Back in January, the El

A Sunday night out shoot-out between two Alicante gangs left two members downed with severe gunshot wounds, whilst twelve others, including a child, were arrested. The showdown happened between Alicante City and San Vicente del Raspeig at around 10.30pm as the two groups of rival drug traffickers faced off in San Vicente. Horrorscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 Having a nice long chat over a pot of tea is well starred again this week, especially if sitting in an east to westerly direction. Giggling, laughing, general leg slapping of your own or someone else's is your lucky style of intercourse. Cowboying/rodeoing/yeeeharghing is well starred, particularly in child friendly fairground ride type rides.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Avoid any Get A Beach Body In 3 Weeks adverts - it's too late for that now - better to get those close to you to call you names or look with derision or disgust at you whilst wearing your new summer costumes if you really want to prepare. (Venus says get the crying over now and you will be able to enjoy your holiday much more later.)

Gemini May 21 - June 20 You tried crunching crackers in rhythm, maybe to music, once, remember? Yes, when you were much younger, for a short while. Now is a good time to revisit this, especially in any cheese and wine type parties with gentle music playing in the background. Your 'crunch dance' routine will be subliminally alluring to someone or other.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 A child will come home from school and ask you if Moses had an iPad this week. No, it's not Apple's latest marketing strategy, they are about to be told about the ten commandments written on tablets handed to Moses. Get your explanation down pat now as your child is starting to become wary about your hesitations.

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 F5 continues to be your lucky function computer key for most of the time unless there is a sticker on the keyboard that says do not press it in bright red letters, or even a mark where a sticker once was. Brain storming with alcohol is temporarily well starred this week in any office based meeting that starts around 10am and finishes before 2 in the afternoon.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 After last week's Scottish based exertions, this week your planetary aspect moves southwards to Newcastle in Northern England where they filmed the UK MTV Jersey Shore lookie-likie show Geordie Shore. Time to break out the six packs, orange tan and say weyaiii Cheryl. Trolling on Twitter, Youtube, and in real life, is well starred all week.

Libra September 23 - October 22 Any invitation to have your say on any subject in the typable social media sites is well starred this week, with a seemingly effortless ability to type the right thing right at that moment. Don't, whatever you do, look back at what you wrote for at least three years afterwards, or before if your solicitor tells you you will need to.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 There may be an answer waiting for you in Stanley Kubric's iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey this week, or maybe just put it on and fall to sleep like you always do and let the planets come up with a dream answer. This week your destiny feels like mayo in the Subway sandwich of your choice.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Sword fights in supermarkets - but without the swords - are well starred this week. Head straight for the baguette shelves if challenged in or near the bakery section, anywhere else head for the broom handles in the home supplies aisles. Running for the hills has rarely been better starred, especially in any wild monster chases from 1950's B-Movie type circumstances that you may find yourself in.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 The flip-up advisory we issued in March for the front peak on baseball caps continues this week. Attempts to bend the front peak down occasionally is doomed, don't bother. Surfing, particularly that brief moment of euphoria about 3 seconds before you fall off is particularly well starred this month, with or without dogs.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 This week is a good week to try a new hairstyle, unless you have already decided to shave all the hair off your head. Bouffant, full bodied and that bouncy thing hair does in slow motion on tv ads are all well starred much of the time. This week your destiny shines like an Olympic torch on a large screen ten times its normal size.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 Tense meetings late into the night over some sort of agreement with neighbours, even governments if you are a European, are well starred, but only if the fat neighbours, probably Taurus or Scorpio, leave some of the buffet left. This week your destiny disagrees with an animated animal.

Global firsts for Volvo

Geely's Volvo Car Group is claiming world firsts for animal and night pedestrian detection technology due to make its debut in the redesigned XC90 crossover due out at the end of 2014. This, the automaker said, makes the detection and auto brake technology work effectively also when driving in darkness. It includes detection and auto brake for other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

The redesigned XC90 will also get road edge and barrier detection with steer assist which detects if the car is about to drive off the road and autonomously applies steering torque to bring the vehicle back on track. "Being able to monitor where the physical road ends is a world first. This means that the technology also works on roads without side markings," Volvo said in a statement. Adaptive cruise control with steer assist helps the driver stay in the lane and follow the rhythm of the traffic. The new system automatically follows the vehicle ahead. "We are introducing the first Volvos with autonomous steering to avoid accidents and make driving more comfortable," said the automaker's senior safety adviser Thomas Broberg. Another claimed global first is 'collision mitigation for animals' which detects and automatically brakes for animals

both in daylight and in the dark. The technology, designed to help the driver avoid accidents or reduce the speed of impact, will be introduced after the new XC90 is launched. The automaker is also, along with rivals like Audi and BMW, developing autonomous parking which allows a car to find and park in a vacant space by itself, allowing the driver to leave the vehicle at the entrance to the car park. Combining autonomous driving with detection and auto brake for other objects makes it possible for the car to interact safely with other cars and pedestrians in the car park, the automaker said. The speed and braking are adapted for smooth integration in a parking environment. "Our approach is based on autonomously driven cars being able to move safely in environments with nonautonomous vehicles and unprotected road users," said Broberg.

TRELI ON THE TELLY

WHO’S NEXT?

the world of politics and PR. It’s a very enjoyable hour which just whizzes by, and the same applies to Dexter which returned for the final series on the FOX UK channel this week. To stop the illegal internet downloads, FOX are now showing this just a few days after the original American transmission, and the only thing I am utterly convinced about is that there will be no happy ending in eleven weeks time for our amiable serial killer!

with ALEX TRELINSKI I’m surprised that the names of Alexander Armstrong and Vernon Kay haven’t popped up as possible candidates to fill Matt Smith’s shoes on Dr. Who. Not surprisingly, every card-carrying member of the actor’s union, Equity, has been mentioned, as I predicted a few weeks ago. Early rumours suggesting Rory Kinnear were quickly denied but the son of the wonderful character actor, Roy, is the man who is very much in the frame. David Harewood, Russell Tovey, and Julian Rhind-Tutt are also said to allegedly be under consideration, but this is probably a load of guff as you would not want to say that you are in for the part, and then not get it! It’s all tabloid talk but whoever it is, it will not be a mega name,

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

NIKE’S EURO GOLF TRUCK OF TRICKS

I have been very fortunate over the years to have been able to talk to the various manufacturers about their products. One of them was Mizuno at the Spanish Open and I met Andy Kikidos who is the manager of the European Tour vehicle, where I was able to see first-hand how the Tour Pro’s are looked after: - some say mollycoddled! Now I have been given details of how Nike Golf has extended its commitment to its growing Tour Staff players with a brand new, state of the art Tour support vehicle for the European Tour. The new Tour truck will be Nike Golf’s testing facility, equipment stock room, meeting space, workshop on wheels and billboard, all rolled into one. The company will use every inch of the 16.5 metre-long vehicle, both inside and outside, as it travels from tour stop to tour stop throughout the season. Peter Powell, Nike Golf’s European Tour technician will be responsible for all technical elements on board the new truck which is fitted with state of the art precision machinery, components and tools to custom build Nike Golf clubs and modify, re-grip or repair individual clubs on-site. Every element of the Tour truck’s functionality is designed to save time as well for the Nike Golf sports marketing team. Nike Golf’s first Tour truck became a necessity to service their growing stable of players when they launched hardware into the range more than 10 years ago. Robin Murray, Nike Golf’s EMEA sports marketing director said: - “We have extended the workshop area to accommodate two technicians and now have the space and storage on the new truck

TITTER ON THE TEE A group of golfers were returning from a day’s golf when they saw a woman about to jump off a bridge... so they stopped and parked their car. The Captain, a big man, gets out of the car and says, "What are you doing?" "I'm going to commit suicide," she says. While he didn't want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an opportunity either, so he asked her: - “Well, before you jump, why don't you give me a kiss?" So she does. And it was a long, deep, lingering, spine-tingling kiss with a bit of tongue as well. After she's finished, the Captain says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I've ever had! That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why in the world would you want to commit suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl." The police now think she may have been pushed.

KNOW YOUR RULES

QUESTION Your partner is not allowed to touch the green to show you the line of a putt. But, what is the procedure when he does? Is it just the partner that is penalised from the hole, or should they both be penalised? ANSWER The individual who touches the green is disqualified from the hole in match play and is given a two stroke penalty in stroke play (Rule 8-2b), but the partner isn’t penalised.

to carry more stock. We are set up to address the needs of every player on-site whether it is building a whole new set of irons, a general service issue or an emergency!”

THE NIKE GOLF EUROPEAN TOUR VEHICLE SPECIFICATIONS INTERNAL MACHINERY:-: FUJIKURA FREQUENCY MACHINE This helps to read the flex of a shaft when already installed into a players club such as a Driver or an Iron which may not be a Nike Club. This helps to build a replica with Nike components or indeed to build an accurate "Back Up". THE GREEN MACHINE This has been used from the beginning of Nike's programme in club building technology. They believe this to be the most accurate machine for reading the loft, lie, face angle, length and off set of any iron, putter or wood. MITCHELL LOFT & LIE GAUGE This is used for securing the Iron for bending. MITCHELL LOFT & LIE PUTTER GUAGE And this is used for securing the putter for bending. HP-100 SHAFT PULLER. This helps the Technician to separate the head of a golf club from the shaft as easily as possible, and more importantly it reduces the risk of breaking or melting the shaft in the separation enabling the shaft to be used again. DRILL PRESS. This machine helps to accurately ream and clean a head in preparation for building. HOT MELT MACHINE. This machine is used for the application of "HOT MELT" to the interior of the metal wood head. The process is used to accurately swing weight the metal wood and also to reduce or enhance the sound quality and feel.

WET SAW. This is used to accurately cut steel or graphite shafts SWINGWEIGHT MACHINE. This small machine measures the swing weight of a club. GRINDER. This gadget is used in many applications but mainly for tip preparation on shafts and for specific head grinding requirements for Nike Golf’s athletes. FERRULE TURNER. This is used for turning down ferrules on metal woods and irons. GRIP STATION. This installs grips and it consists of a sink, pump and tank. The machine grasps the club in the pneumatic vice which holds it secure, and then it uses a recycled grip solution to help install the grip. The whole process makes it possible to grip a set of irons in less than 10 minutes and the player hitting the clubs in under 20 minutes! TRACKMAN. Nike Golf uses TrackMan which is an integral part of the fitting process for both club and ball. NOTE: The Green Machine, Fuji and Swing weight scale have been calibrated so that they are exactly the same in Europe, Japan and America, which means that players can rely on the same readings anywhere in the world. BREAK DOWN: The truck also carries all of Nike's other products such as gloves, balls, shoes, apparel and accessories to make sure that athletes have the best available service on the Tour. Alongside the fully equipped workshop, there is a meeting room and lounge area for the players and staff to work and relax in when at an event. Comprising of satellite TV, a larger than life audio system, a games console and a Wi-Fi enabled work area it is a place where people can relax away from the stresses of life on Tour. And to top it all (well, front and rear) is the “personalised” number plate N11 KES

RULES NEWS Earlier this year, the USGA and R&A ruled that anchored putters would be banned from tournaments sponsored by their respective organizations like the U.S. Open and The Open. It was expected -- most golf analysts predicted -- that the PGA Tour would follow suit. The pressure would be too much for them to employ one set of rules on PGA Tour events and then have their golfers switch to a different set for USGA and R&A events. That's exactly what happened last week at a PGA Tour Policy Board meeting. So, beginning in 2016, all forms of anchored putters will be banned from PGA Tour events.

THE MANCHERTON COACH COMPANY

Anyone remember the old anti-Cloughie joke from the seventies: Brian Clough has been appointed the new England coach – they’ve taken his teeth out and put seats in (sorry Brian - you took us Forest supporters so high we needed oxygen. RIP, mate…). Coaches? I’m confused.com. The new Mancherton (Manchester Utd/Everton) management team at Old Trafford has been confusingly and clumsily revealed in two stages. BBC statement, July 1st, ‘David Moyes has brought three of his Everton backroom staff to Manchester United, including the appointment of Steve Round as assistant manager…. also named Chris Woods as goalkeeping coach and Jimmy Lumsden as coach’. Fair enough, you might think, but this was then compounded three days later with July 4th’s gem: Manchester United have named Ryan Giggs as playercoach and Phil Neville as their new first-team coach. Well, that’s OK then. At Old Trafford

they’ve now got more coaches than Victoria Station and Harry Redknapp at Quite Properly Relegated… Amazingly evergreen Giggs is 40 and Neville a mere 36. Giggs added: "It's no secret I've been taking my qualification. I see this as the first step in my future career." P’raps as a player/coach Ryan can sort out weird Wayne’s world, where Moyes has predictably insisted Rooney is not for sale. The sanguine Scot refused to be drawn on two other counts: attracting Cristiano Ronaldo back from Real Madrid, and landing his old club Everton’s left back Leighton Baines: a £12m bid has already been rejected. Leighton’ll probably be leaving Goodison with t’others - but I doubt Ronnie’s coming… especially as Real want to make him the world’s highest paid player! Hey, Jose Mourinho

Elche’s away start

Newly-promoted Elche have an away trip for their first match back in the top flight of La Liga. They’ll be at Rayo Vallecano, whilst the other two promoted teams, Alemeria and Villarreal are paired with each other for the opening weekend of August 17th/18th. The champions Barcelona will begin their title defence at home to Levante, while their closest rivals and last year's runners-up, Real Madrid, will start their campaign by hosting Real Betis. Therefore Brazil striker Neymar will make his league debut for Barcelona in front of the club's home fans, while new Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will also begin his tenure on home turf. In the new fixtures which were announced on Tuesday, it was revealed the first Clasico of the season will be held on the weekend of 27 October, with the Catalans hosting Madrid at the Camp Nou, while the return game at the Santiago Bernabeu will be held on the weekend of 23 March.

Meanwhile, Elche have signed the Granada goalkeeper, Toño Martínez, who was unhappy with his position at the Andalucian club. Another new name will be 26 year old Barcelona FC reserve defender, David Lomban, who has joined the club as a replacement for Xabier Etxeita who left on a free transfer to Athletic Bilbao. They’ve also nabbed the 22 year old striker, Ruben Rochina on loan from Real Zaragoza. Rochina played for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League back in 2011. Elche are also after the 20 year old Ghanaian midfielder, Godfred Adofo who is currently with Parma. He spent last season on-loan playing in Romania. Elche said on their website that they want to sign the player, whilst he was quoted as telling a Ghana website: - “It is great for the likes of Elche to show an interest in me. My agent Oliver Arthur will have the final say and I know he will get a good deal for me."

isn’t reluctant to relieve Roman of his roubles re-resurrecting Chelsea, following signing German striker Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen. The Blues have now signed 20 year-old Dutch midfielder Marco van Ginkel from Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem on a five-year contract, the fee unknown. Is the light dimming for Lampard, and tiring Torres travelling again? The much-travelled 34 year-old striker Nicolas Anelka has joined West Brom on a one-year deal (why - did he get lost on his way to Newcastle?). The Frenchman must hold some kind of record by already playing in the Premier League for five different teams – never rated him at any of them.... Fresh from featuring finely in the Confederation Cup, Brazilian star midfielder Paulinho has moved to Tottenham from Corinthians for a fee of £17m. If galloping Gareth stays Spurs could do well. Liverpool have turned down a £30m bid from Arsenal for striker Luis Suarez, who has been at the centre of transfer speculation since saying in May that it would be a "good moment for a change", and admitted it would be ‘difficult to say no’ to Real Madrid: big of him. A club just could not have given more support to disloyal Suarez than Liverpool have, and this is how he repays them – and amazingly Arsenal want him, with his disgusting disciplinary displays. Can’t see the Gooners taking to a Liverpool reject... In a defiant Cap’n Mainwaring ‘I’m in charge here’ stance, cuckolded Alan Pardew attempted lamely to re-assume control of Newcastle United in an unconvincing interview, where he tried to explain the four-way management circus at St James Park – he couldn’t - can anyone? Finally big Christian Benteke, last season’s fourth leading scorer in the Prem wants to leave Villa Park. Supposed to be Spurring him on there’s Shedloads of interest Gunning for him: capital!

‘OWED’ TO OUR ANDY – TO A GREAT BRIT FROM A GRATEFUL ONE! Last week I was unkind, to a young man with grit who I cruelly referred to as ‘that Scottish git’. He’s now shown me, and also the world his huge inner strength, the Scots flag unfurled to proudly win Wimbledon: it hadn’t been done by a Brit for so long, but ‘our’ Andy won. And won it the hard way, from pain in his past So King Andy reigns - and long may he last! John McG

NEW BOSS FOR FC TORREVIEJA

FC Torrevieja has a new name and a new manager. With the new title of FC Torrevieja International, the team has a fresh face in charge: Anselmo Serrano Carmona who took Almoradi to the play-off’s a few months ago. But his build up to the new campaign on August 25th will not feature a premium friendly against La Liga new boys Elche, as the club have not been able to get the Vicente Garcia stadium pitch up to a proper standard. Their junior side, Elche Ilicitano will come for a pre-season game though, with a date to be confirmed.

Carmona will lead the first training session this Tuesday, but he’ll have to do so without Torrevieja’s captain, Jorge, who has quit the club for Novelda. Players that are expected to return are Monolo, Juanfran, Rafa, Dani, Gasch, Manu Amores and Luis Carlos. There’s no news yet about Koeman, who President Vincente Boix Mora pledged last week to try to keep at the club. Carmona is also working on bringing in new players, including the former Torrevieja man, Micro, who played at Crevillente last season. There might also be a 19 year old English player getting involved with the

team. He’s Corey Watts who has played at right-back for the Charlton and Brighton youth teams, and he’ll be amongst a group of triallists that Carmona will be looking at. The first fund-raising social event of the new campaign sails into the night, as you can enjoy a night of music and fun out of Torrevieja harbour on Thursday July 18th. Tickets cost 15 Euros, which can be obtained from Jeff Scott on 610 134 068 or jeff53ref@yahoo.co.uk. Chelsea and Spurs veterans will be competing at the Vicente Garcia over the International football weekend of September 7th and 8th against Spanish opposition. It promises to be a fun family occasion, with attractions for children as well as the "big kids" who want to relive the glory days with their former heroes.

ENGLAND EXPECTS And that’s despite Ashton’s miracle knock!

You can take your T20 cricket and all the one day forms of the game and stuff it up the proverbial when it comes to Test Cricket at it’s very best, and of course that means the greatest rivalry of them all:- The Ashes. In what other forms of the game, would you get a 19 year old Aussie lad, who looks like he’s been dragged off the set of Neighbours, drafted in at the very last minute as a spinner to make his test debut at Trent Bridge? A day later, he’s making idiots of the English bowlers, as he set a new world record score for a number eleven, frustratingly dismissed on 98. We’ll forget about his bowling for the time being as his seven overs hardly soiled the pants of the English batsmen on day 1. But it’s certainly time to bring back the old “Boy’s own comic papers”, me thinks for his heroic batting. In a scintillating piece of cricket, Ashton Agar decided to have a go as the Aussie card had been torn to shreds by Jimmy Anderson, with them reeling on 117 for 9, in reply to England’s pathetic 215 on the first day on Wednesday. The lad did it, not through slogging, but with placement and common sense that made out the higher-order batsmen to be clueless, despite the quality English swing bowling. He was

By Courier Sport Editor

last man out on 98, as the Aussies reached 280, and you really would have had to be the most miserable Pom in the world not to have been disappointed that he didn’t make an extraordinary century. Credit as well to Philip Hughes, as the 10th wicket partnership managed to double the team’s score: - only the third time that’s happened for any side in Test history. They also notched a world test record partnership for the 10th wicket of 154. Just to dump some cold water on all of this, some of the bowlers like Stephen Finn sent down some of the most appalling tripe I’ve seen thrown at a debut-tail ender, whilst Alistair Cook’s negative captaincy would have been laughed at by most average club captains. It also meant that the Aussies were lifted enough to grab early England wickets yesterday in the second innings:- this is meant to be a five day test! But what a start for the Ashes, that many pundits believed would be as one sided as a Cassius Clay bout in the sixties. The fact is that Australia have never come before to England in such a negative frame of mind and so unfancied after a shambolic thrashing in India. There was a backroom mutiny that owed more to the days of the Raj than to the game of gentlemen. Mickey Arthur’s removal as coach just a fortnight before the start of the Ashes was simply incredible, but putting in the affable Darren Lehmann as his replacement was a smart shout. A positive play-

er, with English county experience at Yorkshire, along with good people skills with his team and with the media, meant that he could take his charges under his wing with nothing to lose. Agar’s knock was a massive bonus that nobody in any right mental state could have predicted, but despite it being a massive boost for Aussie moral, the plain facts are that the English bowlers, despite their Thursday midday madness, are in a different class. The batting is more even, whilst in the captaincy department, Cook makes Nasser Hussein and Andrew Strauss seem almost cavalierlike. Michael Clarke meanwhile is still in the shadow of Ricky Ponting, and remember that if you don’t have the right quality players, then it doesn’t matter how good a captain you are. Remember how punter Ponting struggled when Warne and McGrath retired. Two corking days have opened up the five Test Ashes series, but despite cans of tinnies being cracked open in Sydney and Melbourne over the miraculous recovery yesterday, I suspect the beer will have a flat taste about it come the final Test at the Oval come the end of August. But, it may all set things up very nicely for the return series down-under this winter. That little urn has a lot to answer for, and as cricket fans we should be extremely grateful, as it stops some idiot administrators saying that Test cricket has had its day!
