DARREN, Dean, Damian, Richard – it doesn’t matter what your name is.

Over the last two weeks, The Courier has been inundated with calls and emails about a controversial solar heating company in which you were the front man.

It’s a company which seems to have disappeared with dozens of dissastisfied customers keen to speak to you about systems that are either malfunctioning or not functioning at all.

SolarSpain has their money, while they have nothing but problems. Exploding radiators, flooded houses, you name it. And no one to call on to repair their systems – unless, of course, they want to shell out more of their savings.

Many, if not most, of your customers were pensioners, the type of people sometimes seen by the unscrupulous as an easy touch.

genuine business venture that was not thought out properly. However, if it was not your intention to rip people off when you set up the business, why have you and the company now done a vanishing act?

Our Letters pages this week again contain horror stories about SolarSpain heating systems, including more pictures of what is clearly sub-standard work. Yet when the company was functioning, you did at least send ‘engineers’ out to attend to problems, so we know you are not entirely without a heart.

There are also two sides to every argument, and although the evidence against you looks damning, nobody has yet heard your side of the story.

4,000 BRITS FOUGHT IN THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

New documents reveal more people from the UK came to fight Franco than thought INTELLIGENCE officials have revealed the names of about 4,000 people from Britain and Ireland who were suspected of travelling to Spain in the 1930s to join the International Brigades battling against General Francisco Franco's forces.

And it is thought that hundreds more Brits set out to join the fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War than was previously thought, newly-released MI5 files show.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936.

Captured Brits expected to be shot

THE members of the machine-gun company captured at Jarama expected to be executed, for the belief was widespread that captured Internationals were shot on sight. Phil Elias, of Leeds, was shot when reaching for tobacco from his pocket and John Stevens, an engineer from Islington in London, was killed by the same burst of machine-gun fire.

When Edward Dickenson, the company second in command, protested over the shooting, he was shot through the head with a pistol.

After interrogation and finger-printing, the surviving prisoners were taken to an old factory in Talavera de la Reina, where they stayed for three months, repairing roads and burying the bodies of executed Republican prisoners, with little food and the most basic living and sanitary facilities. Several prisoners were still carrying the wounds they had sustained at Jarama; many of the others fell ill from stomach and lung diseases.

In May 1937 the prisoners were moved to Salamanca, where they were all tried by a military court for ‘aiding a military rebellion’. Five were sentenced to death and the remainder sentenced to twenty years imprisonment. Following

the show trial, the prisoners were moved to the Model Prison in Salamanca, where they remained until May 1937, when they were informed that Franco had pardoned them, and that they were to be exchanged for a similar number of Italians captured by Republican forces. Of the 23 released

British prisoners, five were back in Spain fighting with the British Battalion within six weeks. A small number of prisoners were not released immediately, but were finally released in November 1937.

NUDGE, NUDGE - WE LOVE A BIT OF GOSSIP Social Networking sites are the new garden fence according to poll THE social networking site Twitter's British audience increased by a third last month as thousands of users logged on to find details of alleged celebrity scandals in defiance of gagging orders.Twitter saw its British users reach 6.1 milllion in May, according to a poll

by UKOM/Nielsen as allegations regarding Ryan Giggs and others surfaced.

The pollsters said that the number of female pensioners using the site doubled in the wake of the scandals. This makes the site Britain's second-most popular behind Google. The boost in figures for Facebook is as a result of over 50s flocking to the site, UKom/Neilsen said.

Facebook attracted a record 26.8 million

visitors in Britain in May, up 7 per cent year on year. This topped the 26.2 million who visited Microsoft's MSN/WindowsLive/Bing sites combined. Google had 33.9 million.

'The growth in audiences to these social networks is now primarily being driven by the 50-plus age group. Just a few years ago, this group may have found itself out of place on these sites,' UKOM general manager James Smythe said.

Mr Smythe said over-50s accounted for more new adults visiting Facebook in the last two years than under-50s, resulting in an age profile far more closely reflecting that of the UK online population as a whole than previously.

WOMEN? THE SAME AS MEN!

By TONY MAYES JUST when I thought the UK couldn't get sillier there's now a growing head of steam against raising the pension age for women to 66 bringing it in line with men.

What on earth makes

women think they should be treated differently from men? They have been campaigning for equality for years and yet when equality hits them in their pockets they grizzle.

Long gone are the days when men have put women on pedestals (that is if they

have any sense). Women here should think themselves lucky they are not in Saudi Arabia where they haven't even the right to drive.

Just think how much better the roads in Britain would be if there were no women on the roads! And finally, the

last bit on nonsense is the Tory MP who thinks it right that the disabled or people with learning difficulties should be paid less than the minimum wage to help them get lobs.

Just the sort of muddled thinking that drives me totally mad

DAD’S LIFE!

PRIME Minister David Cameron used UK Fathers' Day to launch an attack on fathers who fly the net and abandon their wives and children - also abandoning their parental responsibilities in the process by not looking after the children's financial or emotional welfare. TONY MAYES reports

SOME while ago he also had much to say on the value of marriage in society - his message being that marriage should be taken more seriously in society and encouraged as the framework to raise a family.

Both sentiments I wholeheartedly agree with. But is this just another load of waffle from a politician - vote-catching words, easily spoken and just as easily forgotten when the next subject of the moment comes along? Because so far I haven't seen anything happening to bring about a change.

Past governments have a lot to answer for.

They made it far too easy for people to get divorced and they also took away any financial advantage there was in getting married and staying married.

Looking at it in cold, financial terms, for a bloke there is no sensible reason why he should ever contemplate taking marriage vows. If he's got a reasonable job and saved a bit of money, perhaps bought a house on a mortgage, he stands the risk of handing over half of his hard-earned wealth to his marriage partner in a divorce settlement. And, at the same time, he would be financially clobbered again if there are children involved.

Wealth The same would go for a woman, although it is not so clear cut, as the chances are that she would win more than 50 per cent of the marital wealth if there were children involved and keep the roof over her and the children's heads.

Cameron wants society to take marriage more seriously. But is he creating the financial and emotional climate to allow it to happen? I think not. Gone are the days when there was a married man's tax allowance. It wasn't a lot, it certainly wasn't sufficient to encourage every man with a job to rush to get married, but it was a recognition that the government cared about marriage and wanted to encourage that institution.

It also created legislation which gave women during a marriage break up all four aces when it came to deciding where the children should live. The government has turned deaf ears for years at the tales from

fathers who have been denied access to their children by vindictive ex-wives who, at the same time, have spent years poisoning their offspring against their dad.

Nine times out of ten a marriage ends because of an adulterous affair by one or the other partner and increasingly it is the woman who is the wrong-doer. And I have written before in my column that an ideal way of dealing with that is to allow the wronged party in a marriage break up the ability to sue the predator man or woman.

This simple change in the law would make people who are married think twice before embarking on an adulterous affair. It would also make a predator man or woman think twice before having sex with a married person, putting the marriage at risk in the process.

Straying It would also bring the adulterer and his/her partner into a public court. Can you imagine how quickly people would think twice before straying from a marriage if that happened?

While I am on the subject, It appals me to hear there are dedicated web-sites where people can log on to find like-minded people to have an affair. How sick a society have we become that it has spawned people with no moral fibre and are prepared to make money making it even easier for people to have an affair. They are even putting up posters all over Britain advertising their "service".

So, my message to Cameron and his merry cronies is clear. End the rhetoric and let's have some action. Let's see the institution of marriage financially encouraged by the restoration of a married person's tax allowance and/or the transfer of a partner's tax allowances from one to another, and, the introduction of legislation to make it harder to get a divorce. If it does something to end the dreadful situation of more and more people jumping into bed with as many partners as they like and the consequential rise in one-parent families which does so much damage to the next generation, then it will be a very good thing.

Cayetano comes from a long line of famous bullfighters and has appeared in numerous advertisements for Armani.

The annual ‘Corrida Goyesca’ bullfight has included Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway among its spectators.

IN World War 2 when Jews were in danger in Europe and there we many Muslims in Spain and also some Jews. The Muslims could just tell the government about the Jews, but they chose to hide them or help them.

In 1999 Sanchez retired, complaining that male attitudes against her were so strong she was unable to get top billings. In fact, some male bullfighters publicly declared they would not fight on the same billing as a woman. Let us hope they work this out.

According to Albert Schweitzer in his book Out of my Life and Thought, Gaudí was presented with the finest donkeys in Barcelona to use as his model but rejected them in favour of an old, broken down beast that belonged to a woman selling sand.

CAM-bushed!

I’M having a bit of a disagreement with my bank. CAM Bank in Gran Alacant to be exact and no, I’m not worried about mentioning them as everything you will read is true.

It all began in March when an account that I don’t use was at zero balance but as the CAM charge me nine euros each month for my autonomo account, (which I had asked to be cancelled 18 months previously) it went into minus.

Rather than not take the nine euros and tell me that I didn’t have cover on my account (unemployment, health etc.) they charged me 20€ to send me a letter to say that I was overdrawn and immediately another 12€ as an overdraft charge. So within a couple of days I had gone from zero in my account to41€ in the red. But it didn’t stop there as they then charge me interest (at a staggering 29%) from the start of the month taking the banks earnings from me to 76€.

It has now reached 122€ and I’m still arguing because most of the charges are for being overdrawn and the rest is for a credit card machine that hasn’t been used in two years!

I’ve asked for appointments with the manager (whoever that is) had calls ignored and when I went to the branch (and spoke to the very helpful Ana) all she could do was shrug as the banks attitude is ‘tough, you signed a contract’ (how many of you out there have actually read all the small print on the back of your con-

tract? Not many I’m sure, but can’t common sense even enter the field of play? Well, not apparently at CAM Gran Alacant which has a history of, shall we say, doing things by their book…

I remember my CAM bank manager a few years ago ‘selling me’ a 12 year mortgage to buy ten cars for 50,000€, once I’d done it following his recommendation a financial expert told me that it was the ‘worst option’ as I’d end up paying back twice the value of the cars! Thanks CAM. Back to the present and I’ve told the bank – which, by the way, calls any customer it’s not happy with at least once per day (I can legally report them for it, according to a policeman friend, as harassment) - that I will pay the overdraft that is made up purely of their bank fees and publish this and the article below which first appeared in the Guardian in Britain in November 2009.

SPANISH BANK STILL WON'T FREE MY DECEASED MUM'S ACCOUNT

An agonising battle to sort out a relative's estate remains unresolved a year after their death The Guardian, Sat 28 Nov 2009 I SHOULD have seen the warning signs when I walked into a branch of the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterraneo bank the day after my mother's funeral in Spain. I asked the manager to settle the €4,000 bill for the funeral from my mother's account.

The reply was short and simple: "No. The account is blocked."

"But you've only just blocked it," I replied. "Can you not pay the bill first?" No amount of reasoning, pleading and eventual tears could move her.

It was obvious there were greater issues. No words of sympathy or condolence – business is business. Accounts are blocked to protect the bank and make sure there is enough money to cover any outstanding debts.

More than a year later and my two brothers and I are caught up in the labyrinthine workings of the Spanish banking system, and have not received a single euro. How many relatives of the other 60,000 retired Brits who draw their UK pension in Spain will find themselves in the same situation?

My parents moved to Gran Alacant, on the Costa Blanca, seven years ago. They bought a two-bedroom apartment in a newly-built residential complex with a swimming pool and tennis courts, and lived a good life for several years. My father died in January 2007 and my mother 18 months later. They had made sure their finances were in order and had drawn up a will in line with Spanish law.

The inheritance process for the apartment was completed in June this year, and the documents sent to CAM for the bank to release the funds in my mother's sterling bank account. In September, I contacted CAM in Gran Alacant to ask when the money would be unblocked and divided between the three legal heirs.

"Yes," explained a member of staff, Arantxa, "the money is available. Write a letter authorising us to divide the account between you and your two brothers. Take this to your bank

manager and have him authorise your signature. Then send it to your brothers, who will take it to their bank managers.

Then send it back to us and we will submit it to our legal department."

I was stunned. I live in France, my elder brother in the UK and my younger brother had moved to Abu Dhabi. In this age of internet banking – not to mention identity theft – CAM wanted me to generate a chain letter full of personal and financial details. It was agreed we could individually write a letter, go to our bank managers, etc. Not guaranteed, but worth a shot.

The process, she added, could take a long time.

CAM remained intractable. "Do what you like," was the last piece of advice. So I did. I contacted the British consulate in Abu Dhabi and, for a £30 fee, it authorised my brother's letter.

The bank had all it needed. So imagine my disbelief when its legal department told me it had rejected the three letters.

I contacted Banco Santander, Spain's biggest bank, to ask how it would have handled the same situation. It says it is usual for bank accounts to be blocked after the death of a customer, but it does continue to pay direct debits.

This also contrasts sharply with CAM, which has not honoured any direct debits on the account. I am now having to pay to get both the water and electricity supply reconnected.

SPAIN'S state-controlled rail operator has been forced to axe one of its newest high speed train services after it emerged that the only nine passengers were using it each day.

Enrique Urkijo, the Director General for ‘Passengers at Renfe said 'From Friday it will no longer be in service.'’

The AVE route connecting the Castilla la Mancha capital Toledo with the cities of Albacete and Cuenca was inaugurated with much fanfare last December, one of the links that helped Spain overtake France as the country operating Europe's biggest high speed rail network.

But Enrique Urkijo, the Director General for Passengers at Renfe, was forced to concede that the project had not been a success and that operating a "ghost train" was no longer feasible.

"Renfe feels the pain when we transport only steel," he said referring to the fact that only nine passengers on average used the route daily. Instead passengers will have to change trains in Madrid, from which highspeed trains are already operating to the

biggest three cities of Castilla-La Mancha.

The journey time would increase from two hours and five minutes between Toledo and Albacete to two hours and 28 minutes.

The failed route, which costs 18,000 euros (£16,000) a day to operate, is one of a series of infrastructure "white elephants" that have sprung up in recent years across the Spanish landscape.

Castellon Airport, built at a cost of 150 million euros (£134 million) and inaugurated in March, has yet to receive its first scheduled flight. Mile upon mile of empty toll roads are running at a loss.

THE new mayor of San Sebastian in Spain’s Basque Country has sparked controversy after removing an image of King Juan Carlos from City Hall in his first act since taking office. ‘‘This painting does not represent the majority of people in the city,” announced Juan Karlos Izagirre on Friday at his first official meeting since taking office following elections last month. The action could have legal consequences as the constitution states all town halls should display an image of the monarch.

Spain’s Constitutional Court reversed a Supreme Court decision to ban some 250 lists of candidates from the Bildu coalition because it was considered the successor to Batasuna, the banned political wing of the separatist organisation.

tions and won eight seats, a seat more than the socialists who had held power there since 1991.

Rider of the lost art EMMA DOES TRICK AS PALMS FUNDAY HITS THE HEIGHTS IT WAS an enjoyable day out for everyone else, but for stunt rider Emma Tytherleigh, Palms Equestrian Centre’s special Fun Day was a dangerous assignment.

Emma, 25, from La Marina, has been doing trick riding intermittently over the last 10 years and until recently was working in America with an equine theatre touring show called Cavalia.

Not long back in Spain, she has joined Palms Equestrian Centre to work with the kids and teach vaulting (gymnastics on horses).

Emma had worked on her act with Palms horse Aero for just one week before the big event - but wowed the crowd with her exciting routine.

The Funday followed a month or so working with the children, training the horse - and familiarising the horse with her trick routine. ‘‘I’m amazed that Aero has learned all this in such a short space of time,’’ she said.

Stuart Bates also worked hard to prepare the Palms children for their fantastic Musical Carousel on horses.

Sarah Gibbons and Danny Brown , who run Palms (which is situated on the CV 905 from Dolores to Catral) had just seven weeks to prepare for the event. DRUMMING LIKE A BEATLE (with a little Help from my friends)

By RAY PRENTICE HAVING spent most of my life in South London, I'd like to think of myself as quite streetwise, but as you will find out later, perhaps that's not quite the case.

I started playing the drums (well cardboard boxes) at the age of 12, I would use my mother’s knitting needles as drumsticks and the lids of those large tins of biscuits as cymbals.

I joined three other boys who played guitars (well tennis rackets, actually) and there was no stopping us. We used to mime to Beatles and Searchers songs and never got a note wrong.

At the age of 13, with a following of a couple of girls who thought we were the real thing, we got our first

break. The local Odeon cinema were holding a contest during their Saturday morning pictures for under 16’s - it seemed all you had to do was choose a song, go on stage and mime to it in front of 100 screaming, out-of-control, under-16-year-olds, the event was to be held over a three-week period with one or two acts going out each week.

We were the Beatles and to be honest we modelled ourselves on them so we thought we stood a good chance.

I did look a bit like Ringo (well the hair anyway) so I thought all I had to do was shake my head from side to side and not miss a mimed drumbeat. We practised every day till the start of competition day.

We made it through to the final week singing ‘Help’ each time and found our-

selves with just Dusty Springfield to beat.

The winner or winners were judged on how much applause they received and we won, beating Dusty by a mile.

Our prize? A copy of the Beatles single Help (four times of course).

I took up drumming seriously after that, playing in many bands and even agency work in the London area.

Now living in Quesada and not having played for a couple of years I am beginning to miss it. I remember the adrenalin that you get after a gig and not being able to sleep for half the night because of it.

If there are any bands that need a drummer or musicians whot want to start up a band, give me a call on 966 712 987. I think its a shame that there aren’t more totally live bands around.

The workshops will be held at La Rustika (formerly Los Arcos ) and are open to anyone with an interest in theatre, whether it be performing or perhaps working backstage.

There is a nominal charge of two euros per workshop but anyone subsequently joining the group will have this money discounted from their first year’s subscription.

All workshops except the first one start at 3pm and run for approximately two hours.

HANG ON, THIS IS NOT JUSTICE

WHEN it comes to the legal system in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia, there’s not much I agree with. Come to think of it, I’m not too keen on anything else about them, either.

Not that the citizens of those esteemed Muslim democracies (I’m joking) have much say in what’s going on.

But just how democratic are countries like the UK and Spain? Do Brits really have a say in everything that matters – particularly when it involves contentious issues where government and public opinion are at odds?

Like bringing back the death penalty.

Successive governments have known from their research that a national referendum on the return of capital punishment for predatorial killers like Levi Bellfield would produce a massive ‘hang the scum’ vote.

Rage And that’s where the British system ceases to be democratic. Because David Cameron’s government, like the Brown, Blair, Major and Thatcher regimes before them, think they know better than the voters.

So Bellfield will merely spend his life in jail at our expense.

My heart bled for his victims Millie Dowler’s family in their understandable rage following Bellfield’s conviction. ‘‘In my eyes, justice is an eye for an eye,’’ said Millie’s sister Gemma. ‘‘You brutally murder someone then you pay the ultimate price ...a life for a life. So in my eyes no real justice has been done’’.

And so say the vast majority of those who think political correctness sucks. Which is just about everyone I know!

Indeed, the death penalty remains in only two of Europe’s 50 nations, Latvia and Belarus. And the Latvians retain it only for crimes during wartime.

I’m no fan of the gung-ho Americans, but at least they listen to the people (even to the point of electing an idiot like George W Bush and halfdestroying the world as a consequence).

The Yanks executed 47 murderers last year with Texas the most prolific and enthusiastic state.

The problem is that our friends across the Pond often fail to understand the difference between a life sentence and a death sentence.

I mean, serving 20 years on death row and THEN being hanged is a bit steep.

But even 20 eyes for an eye would be too lenient a punishment for the likes of Levi Bellfield.

Logic the loser in this crazy PC world THE very mention of human rights is enough to send my temperature soaring.

The minute someone comes up with a constructive idea aimed at advancing the quality of 21st century life, up pop the PC brigade (not you constable, I mean those holier-than-thou do-gooders) to kill it off.

Take the brilliant concept of banking a DNA sample from every new-born baby in the UK (or ideally the world).

The idea is that by the end of this century, police will know in an instant the identity of the perpetrator of EVERY crime where DNA is present – even if tracking them down might not be so easy.

I mean, the sort of person we are talking about is unlikely to be waiting for the local PC (that’s you, constable) to knock on his mum’s front door. Or to greet him with a jolly ‘It’s a fair cop, guv’.

But babies certainly won’t object to having their DNA taken. Neither, surely, would any law-abiding parent, knowing that the DNA bank would be contributing to a safer world for our children and grandchildren.

We have the technology, so let’s use it to the maximum (are you listening, FIFA?). That’s simple common sense.

But of course the PC plonkers won’t have it. I mean, taking a baby’s DNA would be impinging on the little inno-

cent’s human rights because we don’t know if ‘goo goo’ means ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Then there’s the baby’s parents. Their feelings have to be considered, of course, particularly if mum is a junkie alcoholic whose other five kids are in care and dad is doing 15 years for bludgeoning his best friend half to death.

Well, something like that.

Since the objection lobby would be made up largely of those with something to hide, we’re back in the world of victim and perpetrator.

And in a week in which British law took a deserved battering from the despairing Dowlers, as ever it’s the baddie who wins.

WHEN Stanley Izakor stepped onto Spanish soil for the first time, after crossing the Straits of Gibraltar on a makeshift raft, and fleeing from Guardia Civil officers upon arrival, he saw a new life ahead.

He never imagined that, 13 years later, he would be volunteering to return to his native Nigeria. His one dream, to own his own house, has been the cause of his broken illusions.

Stanley found work in Spain and slowly but surely built a life here. But when he lost his work contract at an ice factory near Murcia in 2008, this idyllic life seems to have crumbled around him.

He hasn’t been able to meet the mortgage repayments for his flat in Ramon and Cajal Street, Alcantarilla – legacy of being one of Spain’s five million unemployed for the last three years. He owes 112,000 euros to the bank, 20,000 euros in legal costs and 12,000 euros in interest on unpaid repayments.

His wife Joy left him in 2010, with their three year old daughter, when neither could get a job, and having been unemployed for two years herself. (Unemployment benefit in Spain lasts a maximum of two years, then stops.)

The depressing panorama led Stanley to suffer a breakdown and a stay at Arrixaca Hospital’s psychiatric unit in Murcia. Since then, the 36 year old Nigerian has had to take medication to

control his frustration.

The water and electricity have been cut off in his flat and he goes to the local petrol station every day to fill large water bottles with enough water with which to shower, cook and clean. But he faces being evicted any day soon.

Fortunately he receives a meal a day at the Caritas Charity community centre. But if it wasn’t for them, he would have nothing to eat either. Stanley’s situation

came to a climax last month when he staved off eviction with the help of the 15M movement and Nigerian compatriots. But he has had enough and wants to go home to Benin City, where he has brothers and sisters – knowing he will hav a better lie there.

Ironically, his decision to leave coincides with receiving his visa to stay in Spain indefinitely. But he has no money to pay for the journey to Nigeria...

‘Doctor WHO’ centre targets liver parasite

AT LEAST 400 cases of infection by a liver-attacking parasite that was until recently unknown in Europe have been diagnosed in Spain, according to new data.

The information comes from Valencia’s new, exclusive World Health Organisation (WHO) centre devoted to the disease.

The fasciola parasite, which instals itself in the liver and can cause cirrhosis, anaemia and other conditions, is a big problem in poorer countries such as Bolivia, where 72 percent of the population suffer infection. But climate change is increasing its presence in the developed world.

Infection (fasciolasis) is transmitted by eating wild vegetation infected by the fas-

ciola parasite, a form of liver fluke. It lays its eggs in the digestive systems of sheep and cows, which hatch after they are excreted and reach water. The larvae look for a new host, freshwater snails, and attach themselves to aquatic plants. Eating infected vegetation instals the fasciola in the consumer’s liver.

Human fasciolasis cases have shot up from 2,500 in 1990 to 17 million today, and the WHO is prioritising the fight against the parasite.

The good news is that the disease rarely kills humans.

And with adequate treatment, the prognosis is excellent.

Prevention: Water-grown vegetables should be washed with 6% vinegar or potassium permanganate for 5-10 mins.

CHOCCY HORROR A 14-YEAR-OLD Mijas girl has been charged with misappropriation for eating birthday chocolates which were mistakenly delivered by a courier to her house.The teenager opened the package and found pieces of chocolate laid out

inside the box to form the words, ‘Feliz cumpleaños’ – ‘Happy birthday’.

The mistake was discovered when the true recipient contacted the courier service enquiring about a package his wife had sent to his office in Fuengirola.

The courier returned to the Mijas address and what remained of the chocolates were sent on to their correct destination.

The teenager reportedly told police she thought the chocolates were a gift for her mother, whose birthday was coming up.

THE INBETWEENERS School’s out APPY DAYS for summer HELLO there, it’s Ellis again and I have just got my new phone.

YES, school has finally finished, “YIPPEE” and thank God. After a long year of hard, non-stop studying and exams, we now have 14 whole weeks of hot summer fun to look forward to. (Or not!)

Apart from a trip back to England to see the grandparents and old friends, what do we inbetweeners actually have to look forward to?

So here I am sitting on the beach, enjoying the sunshine, contemplating my agenda for the over-extended holidays and my thoughts are..

How can I earn lots of money to buy clothes and shoes, without actually working too hard?

Which is the best beach that has all the fit boys and lifeguards?

Where can my friends and I hang out?

And on a really serious note, why oh why am I back in Manchester when Peter Andre is here in Benidorm?

Like all other teenagers, I want entertaining 24 hours a day, places to go with my mates and family, places to meet new friends and of course fun and excitement.

It is a BlacBberry 8520 and I didn’t know how many people had them until I began to ask for people’s pins so I can add them on BlackBerry messenger (bbm for short).

This is kinda like a free messenger app which uses the internet to talk to o t h e r BlackBerrys.

In my class there are 23 students and only 12 of them have phones. Of those 12, eight have BlackBerrys.

My question is why do so many people have t h e m ? W h a t makes them so good?

First of all you can buy one of the cheapest BlackBerrys for just 20 euros a month and with that you get something like 300 minutes a month and unlimited internet (well, they say that but one

gets 100mb) This is why I feel that why I feel so many people have BlackBerrys because they are so easily available and one does not have to be a highly-paid

businessman to be able to afford one.

Of course, there are the more expensive BlackBerrys with new software on them i.e.

This phone has a touch screen and a screen that slides up showing us the keypad the BlackBerry is known for.

But I feel the main reason everyone has them is because of socialising, whichplays a big role in people’s lives.

Take Facebook.

People like it because they can talk to people about what is on their mind. With a BlackBerry there is an app which allows one to go onto Facebook while on the move. What is better than that? One could be on the beach while on Facebook!

This I feel is the main reason why the BlackBerry has became so popular because of its socialising facilities and keeping in touch with your friends.

Hello! I love football and I play for the team Arena in Alicante and my position is striker.

I am a huge fan of the football team Hercules and have a season ticket and go to watch them every time they play at home.

My team Arena consists of 21 people. All of us work hard together to win our league and play our best.

I have been playing with Arena for three years, during which we have won the league twice. So I would like to feel that my team is one of the best in our league.

My favourite footballer is Nelson Valdez. He plays for Hercules and is now playing in the American cup for his home country, Uruguay. I feel he is one of the best footballers around.

I would to say a special thanks to The Courier for allowing me to write this article and putting it in the newspaper. 0It will be really cool seeing something I wrote being read by lots of people. If that is not cool, I don’t know what is.

OCEANS APART

EVER since she was knocked over by a wave as a little girl, oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle has been fascinated by the ocean.

One of the world's best known marine scientists and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Earle loves to dive deep into the ocean. She has spent much of her life in or under the waves.

Now in her effort to save the oceans, she wants to make it uncool to eat a tuna fish sandwich and to understand the impact that humans have on the ocean each time we eat seafood or use pesticide on the garden bugs.

things that motivates me above all else is to do whatever I can to make the world aware of how much is changing and how fast it’s changing, and what the consequences are to us.

WHY IS THE OCEAN SO IMPORTANT TO LIFE ON EARTH?

WHAT WERE YOU LIKE AS A KID AND WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? GROWING up is a long process and I am not working too hard at achieving it. My personal beginning was in south New Jersey on a little farm. My parents moved to Florida when I was 12 and my backyard was the Gulf of Mexico.

My first encounter with the ocean was on the Jersey Shore when I was three years old and I got knocked over by a wave. The ocean certainly got my attention! It wasn’t frightening, it was more exhilarating. And since then life in the ocean has captured my imagination and held it ever since.

The big craggy horse shoe crabs along the beach on the Jersey shore—I thought they were wonderful and I felt so superior to the adults who thought they were scary creatures. I knew they weren’t scary, and I knew they were beautiful. They weren’t trying to attack me or anyone else—they were just minding their own business.

HOW DID YOU GET TO BE A SCIENTIST OR EXPLORER? IT was easy. I started out as a kid and never did grow up.

The best scientists and explorers have the attributes of kids!

They ask questions and have a sense of wonder. They have curiosity. Who, what, where, why, when, and how! They never stop asking questions and I never stop asking questions just like a five year old.

WHAT DO YOU DAYDREAM ABOUT? GOING under water...Saving the ocean...Being a fish…Or imagine being an eel and with no arms or legs and a just slithery body, slide around, and then tuck back in a burrow with just your face sticking out....I would love to slip into the

skin of a fish and know what it’s like to be one. They have senses that I can only dream about.

They have a lateral line down their whole body that senses motion, but maybe it does more than that. Or to be a blue whale, the biggest animal on Earth and to sense sound that has travelled over hundreds, maybe thousands of miles, and to have it as a part of my life. I daydream about that, doesn’t everybody?

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE ANYONE HAS EVER GIVEN YOU? DON’T take no for an answer and find out what you want to That is the great thing about dreams they never stop. That’s the great thing about exploration—it’s never over.

I HAVE lots of heroes. All my fellow National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence are heroes, each in his or her own way. They are wonderful creatures, every one. As a child my parents were my heroes, and my brothers (I have an older one and a younger one); a few outstanding teachers along the way; and relatives, especially aunts and uncles. They took joy in making others happy. My family did not have wealth in the traditional sense, but they were blessed with the kind of wealth that really counts. I knew no matter much trouble I got into my parents would stand by me.

I RARELY travel without a camera. I am not a photographer, but taking photographs helps me to remember and to document. Oh, and a bathing suit.

THE OCEAN is the cornerstone of our life support system and the cornerstone of the ocean’s life support system is life in the ocean. The ocean is alive. Oxygen is generated by living creatures.

They are part of the system and food chains in the sea drive those systems.

Every fish fertilizes the water in a way that generates the plankton that ultimately leads back into the food chain, but also yields oxygen, grabs carbon—it’s a part of what makes the ocean function and what makes the planet function.

HOW CAN KIDS HELP THE OCEAN? THE Ocean is vulnerable. What we do or don’t do will make a difference. As individuals, kids can make a difference. The only difference that has been made ever in the world, for good or for not so good, always starts with somebody, an individual. It might as well be a kid!

The first thing you need to do is hold up a mirror and ask yourself who am I? What do I love? What am I good at? If you are good with words, then use those words. If you are good with numbers, use numbers.

Do you play a musical instrument, write a song and play an instrument. Are you a teacher, use that talent. Adults, take a kid to a wild place. If you are a kid, grab an adult and take them somewhere and show them the future through your eyes.

We had to carry on as the company had all our money for the work. My husband has had to keep de-rusting the tank, re-do the cladding, re-position the run-off pipe for the overflow etc, etc, etc.

The last lot who came to fix the mess, told us they were hired independently by the company, as they had moved to the north of Spain. We are still awaiting our five-year guarantee.

YOUR article on solar heating reminded me of when I moved to Spain in August 2009.

The following month I got a company called SolarSun to give me a quote for water heating. They quoted me €2,960 to fit it. In with this was a 45% discount we would receive back from the government.

After one year I tried to get in touch with Solar-Sun but their phones were switched off and their website had gone. So I am still waiting for my €1,170.

I wonder how many more customers Solar-Sun robbed?

Cheapo heating system was doomed to failure

WE have had a house in Quesada for 12 years and moved here last October and it was a cold winter!

I was a heating engineer and have been in the heating industry since 1974 with British Gas, Baxi, Valor Robinson Willey and Dimplex Group. After making some heating enquiries for various types of products I discovered that here in Spain there a quite a few Darrens.

I had a meeting with him at his Punta Prima base last February, where he showed me the solar unit he was promoting and the 'home warming system' - the one that everyone has bought but none of them work.

I realised from the start that the whole thing was cobbled together badly. The whole concept is not viable but I did not challenge Solar Spain or Darren (Richard is the name I have), simply out of professional ethics really. In the 30-40 minutes of my meeting with him, there were four

or five couples waiting to sign up and pay for a system that was not going to function. But I was unable to intervene.

Purely by fluke, I was on a ski-trip in March and shared a conversation with a neighbour of Darren/Richard, during which what has recently happened was outlined to me - along with a warning about the whole SolarSpain set up. It all came out as it was described to me in March.

Due to these and other events and following a few months of further research, we have brought a team together.

Ambience is officially opening next month next to Cyclogical in Quesada and is somewhere people can go for real and solid information and assistance when they want to heat or cool their houses.

How to check out your computer repair ‘expert’ AS with many things in life, it’s difficult to figure out for yourself whether the person you are dealing with (plumber, mechanic, computer engineer etc.) is honest and trustworthy.

I guess most of us rely on common sense, word of mouth and the good/bad experience that our friends have had, of course this isn’t always the best barometer of skill but does seem to work in most cases.

As for skill, in my industry there are a number of professional qualifications that can be taken; however given that most people have computers with Microsoft operating systems running on them, let’s focus on their certifications. Microsoft have two main certi-

I have tried to cut and paste and copy and paste to the Google translate page but it does not work is there any way to translate a subpage retyping the whole thing on the Google translate page. Hi Brian, there are many things that you can do in this instance, however I think that the best in my opinion is to install the Google toolbar, you can find it at the following address http://toolbar.google.com I covered the use of the Google Toolbar a couple of months ago in The Jungle Drums, if you missed it you can find a copy of the article at www.bluemoonsolutions.es/google-toolbar with the toolbar installed every time you visit a foreign language website the Google toolbar will offer to automatically translate the page for you.

ADVICE: David was trying to translate some documents that he had scanned into his computer.

Richard, you've helped me out once before and I wonder if you would have a look at another problem I have. Is it possible to translate documents I have scanned into Picasa using Google translate. I use the browse option to select the document but Google then responds that the document is not in a format it recognizes. If Google translate is not appropriate, is there another freebie program I can use.

Hi David, it sounds like you have added the documents to Picasa as scanned .jpg files, if I’m right then this means that they are simply pictures to your computer (and to Google) and therefore are not easily translatable (without specialist OCR – Optical Character Recognition – software). You have a number of options, the first is to buy some OCR software, this software will “read” the scanned image and convert it into an editable document in a format that Google translate can deal with. Google translate will translate files in the following formats…

AdWords Editor Archive (.aea) HTML Plain text (.txt) Microsoft Word (.doc) Rich-text (.rtf) Open Office (.odt) Wikipedia™ knol …so you will need OCR software that will convert scanned images into one of these formats.

Alternatively you can type the document direct into Google translate and let it do the translation from there. If you have a search around Amazon you will find plenty of OCR software options available for purchase, I can recommend Abbyy Fine Reader and PaperPort having used them myself.

Hi Mary, it’s a good question – as you have probably heard simply deleting the contents of your personal information will not destroy it, it still remains easily recoverable from your computer until such a time as its overwritten by more information. There are a number of companies that will be able to offer you data wiping services, BlueMoon Solutions is one of them, however if you are wanting to be 100% sure yourself that your information has been destroyed then probably one of the most effective ways is to remove the hard drive platters (the things inside your hard drive that store information) and physically destroy them – this also happens to be quite a satisfying way to kill your data! WITH a name like Sun Bar and Grill you expect a cheery atmosphere and that’s exactly what I got when I popped along there last week. This delightful bar and grill opened in February and has already established itself as a place for quality food and good service among the regulars. Situated at Via Park V on the first floor next to the 2GB Indian Restaurant in Los Altos, Sun Bar and Grill are now offering a tasty range of both takeaway and eat-in foods such as pizzas, kebabs, burgers and (my favourite) fish and chips in, what I say is a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The food is well prepared, tasty and just as important these days, excellent value for money. At the Sun Bar and Grill they have something to suit all tastes and budgets, and (important for me) the portions are very generous.

If you’re a morning person then try a breakfast which start from just 2€, or snacks are very reasonable with small pizzas from 2€. However, if it’s more of a meal that you’re looking for they have an extensive menu including: burger and chips and a large beer - 5€, fish and chips and a large beer – 6€, a plate of chips for only 1€ and kebabs – 4€. Chicken breast served with chips and salad 4.95€ and half a chicken served with chips and salad 6.95€ Outside is a roomy terrace seating up to thirty people and a full sized Pool Table and inside there is a dining area with a widescreen TV for sports fans plus internet facilities.

With entertainment every Saturday starting from 9.00pm (a bingo and quiz night) there’s something for everyone at the Sun Bar and Grill, I’ve not even mentioned the wellstocked bar which includes Magners, Guinness, bottled beers, Estrella lager and much more, and if you fancy a refreshing change why not try their new refreshing slushes, with vodka for only 2.50€.

NO one can ignore the financial and economic crisis which has been sweeping the world. There are various indexes you could use to monitor the crisis - currency exchange, debt, stock exchange, interest rates but there have also been light-hearted reports of other indexes which reflect the time - such as the miniskirt index (hems rise as times get tough) and the alligator index (alligator populations increase because people can't afford them as handbags and shoes).

WHAT TO DO Post-traumatic stress disorder is recognised as a psychiatric disorder. However its assessment can be difficult for professionals to make since sufferers could complain of a wide variety of symptoms. This is why mental institutes offer a self test.

For people wondering if they should seek evaluation for PTSD from their general practitioner, or mental health professional, self tests may be very useful.

Treatment usually includes medical and psychological interventions. Medical treatment involves the use of antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, prescribed by doctors. Psychological treatments could involve providing counselling for the sufferer and family members, cognitive therapy, and relaxation techniques.

Education of sufferers plays an important role in therapy. This involves teaching individuals about PTSD, how it is treated and what to expect from treatment. This education increases the likelihood that inaccurate ideas the person may have about the illness is dispelled, and any shame minimised.

THE EL PLATE TEST

IN order to drive legally in Spain you must have your full UK licence and be at least 18 years old.

Similar to many other countries in Europe, Spain has a legal driving age of 18, so you can’t drive here aged 17, even if you have a full UK licence.

You are able to enter Spain’s borders fairly easily if you have all your paperwork to hand. These include your registration papers, insurance document, driving licence and passport. Always remember to drive on the right hand side in Spain and of course overtake on the left. There are some mandatory items that you must carry in your car when travelling in Spain – a spare tyre and tool kit to change the tyre;

There’s a lot of confusion over what exactly you can and can’t do in Spain with regards to driving, so we’ve compiled some advice for those who want to make sure they are legal, and safe. After all, hand over the wrong bit of paper when the Guardia stop you and you know you’re in for a long night!

DRINK DRIVING IN SPAIN – NO!

THE drink driving limit in Spain is lower than in the UK and you are only allowed 50mg per 100ml of blood. It is highly recommended that you don’t partake in any alcohol if you’re planning to drive as the fines can be severe. You could face imprisonment or a hefty monetary fine, so it’s better to steer clear at all times.

Home chrome: Elton’s £250,000 Spyder A ONE-OFF Audi R8 Spyder wrapped in chrome has raised £250,000 at a charity auction at the home of Elton John.

As part of a fundraiser for the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF) – an annual event held at the pop superstar’s home – the dazzling one-off was revealed in front of a star studded audience.

The event also featured a special performance of Elton’s smash hit ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’ with ex-Wham front man George Michael.

The R8 Spyder in question comes with an official list price of £117,710, However, EJAF hoped it would rake in a much higher six-figure sum from the glamorous audience which included the likes of Tracy Emin and Stephen Fry. So successful was the auction that Audi submitted a second R8 Spyder, which also raised £250,000 to take the total to half a million pounds.

was then resubmitted for auction by the winning bidder, where it was sold for £120,000 to take the total on the night to £620,000.

The Audi R8 Spyder sold at the event comes equipped with a potent ten-cylinder, 5.2-litre 518bhp petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual transmis-

sion and it is capable of clearing 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 194mph as well.

That translates into 391lb-ft

of torque and a peak output of 8,000rpm.

The drop-top model comes equipped with a folding fabric hood which opens and closes in 19 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph to offer what Audi has termed ‘wind-in-hair intensity’.

"Sir Elton John's fundraising ball really is a golden ticket event that is as glamorous as it is hugely effective in fundraising terms," said Jeremy Hicks, Director of Audi UK. "We are delighted, and enormously proud, to support it for a ninth year with the donation of what is arguably our most fittingly glamorous model," he added.

Audi has been involved with EJAF for the past nine years helping to support £14 million worth of programmes across 15 countries worldwide.

The EJAF White Tie and Tiara Ball, where the auction takes place, is held every year to generate money for the charity.

MARK BAILEY I’VE been out an about again this week and I called in to see Therese & Mike at Bar Rosa’s in Los Montesinos and to say they haven’t been there that long only 4 months to be exact they have really turned the bar around and they have got a great line up of entertainment coming up over the summer months, as well as having entertainment on every second Friday they also do special nights and the next big event they have coming up is Mark Bailey with his fantastic Michael Buble Tribute on Monday 11th July, the evening comprises of a three course meal with choice of starters, mains and desserts all cooked for you by Mike who was trained by the fantastic chef Marco Pierre White.

Now Mark is not to be mistaken with the Michael Buble tribute that was over here last month, Mark has lived on the Costa Blanca now for eight years and is currently amazing the audiences up and down the Costa’s with his legendary voice and showmanship, but unlike many other artists out here Mark only recently started to perform on a stage he was a chef that just went to the odd karaoke nights with his mate Sam then one night while they were out at a karaoke they were spotted by one of the bar owners from San Miguel who just couldn’t believe Marks raw talent, and asked the boys if they would put a show on for him in his bar in a months time!!!. The boys worked day and night for the whole month preparing a show to top all shows and decided that the best direction to go in was a Buble act with a difference and so with Marks girlfriends help and watching hours of Buble DVD’s!!! He soon learned about stage presence and conversing with the audiences. The first show was an astounding success and he has never looked back since, but as Mark says the show wouldn’t be what it is today without the help of his co pilot Sam Magee doing his sound and lighting for every show and this guy really knows what he’s doing when it comes to sound, because Sam along with his family own S.A.M.P.A a fantastic company which supplies sound, lighting and technical support, the company started back in the UK in 1978 before moving to Spain in 2007 where they have worked with Alexander O’Neal, The Real Thing and Mario to name a few.

So if you don’t want to miss this fantastic night call 966721236 to book your table, tickets are only 8 euro’s for the three course meal and show and it’s all starting from 7pm.

But for some advice for this week as to where to go then on Saturday night Los Belgas in Gran Alacant has the Backbeat 4 Beatles these lads always put on a great show, Sunday night sees Red Strokes playing at the Snug in Torre de la Horredada if you love country then you’ll love this guy, and then for something different on Monday night Inn at the Green in Entre Naranjas are having a Fun Race Night starting at 8.30pm with horses, dogs and even pigs!!

AMY Winehouse's attempt at a European concert tour ended in Belgrade, Serbia, with a train wreck of a performance last Saturday night in which she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.

The audience eventually chased Winehouse off the stage with loud boos several numbers into what was supposed to be the opening show in a 12-date tour.

A representative for Winehouse said her next two concert dates have been canceled.

Winehouse representative Tracey Miller did not directly confirm that the "Rehab" singer, who has a history of battling drugs and alcohol, had fallen off the wagon. Winehouse only recently left a British rehab program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for the European concerts.

"Yes, Amy has cancelled appearances in Istanbul and Athens for the coming week,"

said Miller. "Despite feeling sure that she wanted to fulfill these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home."

Video clips of the musical disaster, recorded by concertgoers' cell phone cameras, were quickly posted on YouTube.

They showed Winehouse failing in every attempt to sing more than a few slurred lines of her songs.

Audience members could be heard filling in the gaps, along with her back-up singers.

"She would like to apologize to fans expecting to see her at the shows but feels that this is the right thing to do," Miller said.

When Winehouse entered a rehab program at London's Priory Clinic last month, a representative said hat "she wants to be ready for performances in Europe this summer and decided to seek an assessment."

TKO Gold Featured Artist GLEN CAMPBELL SINGER Glen Campbell has revealed that he is battling Alzheimer's disease. In a recent interview, the 'Rhinestone Cowboy' hit maker broke the news about his condition and his plans for a farewell tour.

The 75-year-old and his wife Kim decided to go public with the news now in order to keep fans from speculating about his behaviour during the upcoming performances. "Glen is still an awesome guitar player and singer," Kim said. "But if he flubs a lyric or gets confused on stage, I wouldn't want people to think, 'What's the matter with him? Is he drunk?'"

Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer's six months ago after years of short-term memory loss. Dates of the farewell tour have yet to be revealed, but it looks likely that they will be scheduled this autumn.

"I still love making music," Campbell said. "And I still love performing for my fans. I'd like to thank them for sticking with me through thick and thin."

During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and racked up 12 Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and 1 Double-Platinum album.

It was announced in April 2008 that Campbell was returning to his signature label, Capitol, to release his new album, Meet Glen Campbell.[3] The album was released on August 19. With this album he branched off in a different musical direction, covering tracks from artists such as Travis, U2, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne and Foo

Fighters. It was Campbell's first release on Capitol in over 15 years. Musicians from Cheap Trick and Jellyfish contributed to the album as well. The first single, a cover of Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", was released to radio in July 2008. In March 2010, a farewell album titled "Ghost on the Canvas" was announced.

As a stalwart of country music, Campbell’s presence in and around the scene will be sorely missed.

SUSAN Dear Susan, Sorry to hear that as a result of unfair treatment you've had difficulty finding work. As for how to answer that question, "I was blamed for an error someone else committed" seems to cover it.

It's important that you find yourself some employment as quickly as possible. You're well aware of that, but it would be particularly helpful if you found yourself something, perhaps voluntary or perhaps short-term, so you'd have updated references and some constructive way of occupying your time and proving that you want to work and have skills to offer. Helping out on a community project, a charity or hospice, would stand you in good stead even if it were part-time.

The websites of local councils or particular charities could be useful here.

You might even consider working overseas for the experience if that would suit your circumstances and temperament. Enter "working abroad" or "volunteer work abroad" in a search engine - and beware! Sometimes I don't think I deserve to live.

I've got myself in so many bad situations - I'm very scared about that because I could potentially be putting myself in danger. I'm so paranoid about what people think of me I feel like I need to hide and never come back. I've been like this for

years and I don't know how to stop or help myself. It feels like I have no control and that I'm ruining my life.

SALLY Dear Sally, Well done for recognising that you have a problem with alcohol! It's the first step in regaining control over your life and feeling good about yourself.

Even though you don't drink every day or vast amounts, you've been drinking to the point where it affects your mood, your self-worth and your behaviour. You've even put yourself in harm's way.

By some definitions that counts as alcoholism.

People are individuals and their bodies have the ability to process alcohol to differing degrees.

That doesn't make you weak or inadequate. It's just useful information for you to act on. Some people know when to stop - but as alcohol first knocks out social guidelines and adult awareness, it can be hard to for others to take control of their drinking. One person’s excess might be another person's sensible

limit for all kinds of reasons. People drink to excess to blank out uncomfortable beliefs and feelings about the self.

You've been doubting your worth and fearing criticism, judgment and rejection by others, which fits with this pattern.

But Dutch courage leads to social difficulties and damages self-esteem, as you've discovered.

So what can you do about this? Find an alcohol awareness and support group in your area. They'll be listed in Yellow Pages.

Some, such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), operate their 12-Step Program nationwide. Or talk to your doctor.

Not all alcohol support services require total abstinence. Aquarius and other organisations may offer individual or group counselling as well as a controlled drinking program.

But all of them will help you find more helpful ways of managing your feelings, thoughts and actions than crawling into a bottle.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2011

THE 98th Tour De France begins tomorrow (Saturday July 2) and runs until July 24. Cycling’s most celebrated event will be made up of 21 stages and cover a total distance of 3,430.5 kilometres.

These stages have the following profiles: Distinctive aspects of the race l Le Galibier climbed twice, l Two rest days l 23 Level Two, One or highest level mountain passes or summit finishes, l No bonuses will be awarded during the intermediate sprints and stage finishes.

SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR BRIT BEN

BEN SWIFT will make his Tour de France debut as one of three British riders in the Team Sky Line up. Highly rated Swift, 23, from Rotherham, will join Welshman Geraint Thomas as Sky aim to make Bradley Wiggins the first Brit to make the podium in Paris.

"I am delighted that Ben Swift will be making his Tour debut," said team principal Dave Brailsford. "He will absolutely thrive on this opportunity to test himself on the biggest stage of all."

by Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), rode a perfect race to cross the line 7.697s ahead of Casey Stoner in second place.

The Texan had a good start, allowing him to narrowly avoid the drama of the first lap, when pole starter Italian Simoncelli took out Spies’ team mate Jorge Lorenzo in the third corner. Simoncelli had hoped to finally reach the podium in the Saturday race, but the Italian fell victim to a cold tyre early on.

Stoner led team mate Andrea Dovizioso to the finish, where the Italian claimed his third top three finish of the 2011 season. Stoner is now 28 points ahead of Lorenzo in the Championship while Dovizioso remains third, but is now only nine points behind the Spaniard. The Ducati Team duo was lead across the finish line by Valentino Rossi in fourth and Nicky Hayden in fifth. Lorenzo was able to rejoin the race and put his head down after the clash with Simoncelli to cross the line in sixth place.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider Colin Edwards was seventh, in front of Dani Pedrosa’s stand-in Hiroshi Aoyama.

They were followed by Simoncelli in ninth, who rejoined the race after push starting his own motorcycle following the run in on the first lap. Toni Elias of the LCR Honda team completed the top ten finishers.

Cal Crutchlow exited the track with a front tyre problem, though re-entered the race to finish 14th.

Karel Abraham ended what was otherwise a good weekend for the Cardion AB Motoracing with a fall early in the race. He was followed a short time later by Randy de Puniet (Pramac Racing), the fourth DNF of the season for the Frenchman. Both riders were unhurt in the falls.

By DAN SMITH (The inside story from the only reporter with full access to the club and players) AS the dust settles turning Elche´s play off hopes into recent history its now not crowds that surround the Martinez Valero stadium but swarms of sharply dressed football agents.

Agents are easy to spot as they pace up and down multi tasking on their numerous BlackBerry s and iphones waiting their turn to tout their clients abilities, or worse still an explanation as to why their client thinks he´s worth one more year on his contract and another 100k a year.

Players have now headed back to their home towns for the short summer break and its left to the agents to carry the power.

Like them or not, the agents role during the months of July and August is critical, unreasonable demands by their clients has consequences for all concerned and as the man in the middle, the agent must satisfy all parties if he is to earn his commission.

Due to Elche´s hi-profile finish, all eyes have turned on the modest club; a steady stream of agents gives witness to this fact.

With last season barely few days old, Elche´s technical director - Paco Martinenez had the difficult task of convincing manager Bordalás that his future lay with Elche as several clubs of standing where now looking at tempting Bordalás.

Bordalás´s representative ended with the club breathing a sigh of relief as Bordalás agreed to a new two year contract and improved conditions.

Captain Samuel looks set to depart for better things, his agent offering possible deals with first division Rayo Vallecano or Betis.

The 26 year old Elche-born Samuel hasn't been that impressive but a good spell of form late on and during the play offs catapulted him into the spotlight.

With a year left on his contract the club are presently negotiating with the player and representative.
