BEACHES AND CREAM BEST OF BRITISH Page One verdict BY TONY MAYES

IT'S my guess there aren't many Brits who watched the fantastic Queen's Jubilee celebrations without a huge sense of national pride welling up. It certainly had that effect on me. What a fantastic sight it was to see those 1,000 boats progress down the Thames and the spectacle of the row past. How amazing it is to think that the closing of

IT’S official - Alicante has the best beaches in Spain.

On Wednesday, the province was awarded a record FIFTY-FIVE coveted Blue Flags for its beaches and 11 for its marinas, the most of any province nationally. And Torrevieja won back the two Blue Flags it lost last year at Torrelamata-Sur and the Playa de los Locos. PP-CLARO bond stengthens in Orihuela power game By AMANDA BLACK IT’S been another long week at Orihuela town hall - with the PP and CLARO continuing to cosy up while the tripartite government tears itself apart with infighting in its struggle to hold power. At the end of last week, Monica Lorente was on the verge of seizing the reins with a vote that would have given the ex-PP mayor control of all the government committees. She was only stopped when at the last moment Mayor Monserrate Guillén invoked a legal device to prevent the vote, a move that NEW ALLIANCE: PP’s Monica Lorente and Bob Houliston prompted Lorente to label joint ‘manifesto’ at a meeting points of a government bers of the government team him a “dictator”. agreement to return stability led by Greens’ Guillén, with on Tuesday. dealt with a three point plan: “The organisation of Orihuela Costa, of our pedanias (parishes) and the idea of launching a new form of social services management, important issues for the Popular Party and CLARO." The parties agreed structures that would see the coast and the pedanias with their own budgets and councillors, with the aim of bringing government closer to the people. And they stressed an improvement in health and social care was a priority for both parties. “Social policy, elderly care, improving health services, social assistance and continuous, quality respite programmes are issues that unite the PP and CLARO, and so will appear in the governance agreement,” the statement said. Houliston demonstrated his loyalty to Lorente and the PP opposition by voting with them against a motion on Cala Mosca, the urbanisation that if built would destroy the last area of unspoiled coastline in Orihuela Costa.

F0RTY members of La Siesta Bowls Club enjoyed a fun day on Saturday to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. Activities included target bowls and skittles, guess the weight of the cake, how many sweets in the jar, spot the

owners of the childhood photos and much more. Prizes were donated by club sponsors Golden Leaves our sponsors and eveyone attending received a commemorative coaster.

PRIDE OF A NATION!

From Page One the Thames Barrier can hold back millions of tons of water to allow the procession lasting hours on a river steeped in history. The following day the concert outside Buckingham Palace with crowds stretching the entire length of The Mall, packed to capacity was truly amazing. There cannot be many countries around the world capable of putting on such a tribute. And in three weeks time Britain will play host to the Olympics - it's just amazing what Britain can do. No wonder our nation and its Commonwealth was and

still is such an influence in the world. So, can Britain, now so pumped up with national pride, sort out this crazy financial mess we're in? I think so, and if the country lives up to its past record, it should lead the way. And lastly, if Scotland, Australia and anyone else wants to pull away from the greaatest family of nations the world has ever seen, they must be stark staring nuts.

AND AS FOR THE LOCALS...

Could I through your paper say a great big THANK YOU to all the organisers of the Jubilee Party in the Park of Nations. The hard work they put in was outstanding. The performers were amazing and the Rascals kept the children (and adults) occupied with lots of games. And thanks to the ‘Rascal’ lady who lent me her bottle opener! Last but not least, thanks to the Ayuntamieno of Torrevieja for allowing us to hold this historical event in their beautiful park. Well done, everyone, for a wonderful day. Ambassador rings the changes HUNDREDS of government, business and civil society representatives joined the British Embassy in Madrid to mark the Jubilee. More than

500 guests to Ambassador Giles Paxman’s official residence in Madrid to celebrate the occasion. An exhibition of portraits of the Queen by royal photographer Sir Cecil Beaton, Andy Warhol and well-known British artists was mounted at the residence to demonstrate the changes in the relationship between the Queen and the British people. At the reception, Mr Paxman said: “The Queen has seen Great Britain transformed. The marvellous

photo exhibition here today shows how the Queen has changed over 60 years. But Britain has changed with her - its people, its politics, its culture and fashions. We have welcomed new Britons from across the world. Each community has added to the spirit of energy and diversity that drives our country. “Spain too, has changed immeasurably over the period. It has witnessed the transition to democracy, the birth of the modern Constitution and the return of its own

Royal Family. “Over 60 years Spain and Britain have grown closer together, making Spain the destination of choice for British people to live, work and go on holiday. Our two countries are close partners in trade and investment, international security and in Europe. I am proud of the work the British Embassy and our network of Consulates around the country does every day to support this vital and positive relationship.”

FOR the first times in ages, I’m feeling proud to be British. There was something special about celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee out here in Spain rather than mixing it with the millions of brolly-day makers back in Blighty. And there was something ESPECIALLY special about being carried away in a sea of red, white and blue sunshine, rather than under an umbrella in the English rain. I reckon there were at least 2,000 revellers at Torrevieja’s spectacular ‘Street Party in the Park’ on Sunday – a huge proportion of them attired in the national colours. The vast majority of those squeezed into the picturesque Parque de las Naciones were British expats and holidaymakers…the Spanish locals no doubt driven off by the alien sounds booming from the TKO roadshow speakers. There was also the threat posed by a rousing medley of music with a military theme. heartland. RED MIGHT AND PHEW!

Britain’s brolly-day is a Costa jolly day ed seats and tables for 1,000 people; twice as many would not have been sufficient. Hundreds sat on the grass verges soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the musical diversity of twinkling young dance troupes, a concert band, barbershop harmonisers and the best solo performers on the Costa. The big pity was that the British TV cameras weren’t there. They’d have provided a perfect antidote to the ‘Long To Rain Over Us’ scenes they screened back at base. While the younger generation in the UK would have

seen the occasion more as an excuse to get mega-bladdered than to celebrate an historic occasion, in Torrevieja I saw no hint of drunkenness. There was also no sign of the undesirables who shame Britain abroad – but then, they are one of the reasons I came to live in Spain in the first place. On a day of great highs, there was just one low. Well, one loo to be precise. Torrevieja, you did us proud. But a few portaloos would have made life a lot more comfortable. And no, I won’t bog off…

Squeals on wheels I USED to get totally exasperated by the antics of crazy cyclists when I was driving in the UK, but here in Spain almost all bike riders seem to have left their brains in their homelands and have a death wish. They cycle along pavements, down slopes onto roads without looking; suddenly become pedestrians by turning across the road on pedestrian crossings, expecting cars to stop on a sixpence. They turn left and right without looking behind and without signalling. Considering the standard of driving of many motorists here in Spain it's a miracle that any cyclist is left alive. It would be interesting to know just how many cyclists are involved in road accidents here on the Costa - I wouldn't mind betting it's pretty horrific. Cyclists appear to leave their brains behind when they set their posteriors on the saddle. It may be that the Spanish highway code gives them some kind of precedence over other road users and it is up to motorists to give them priority, but cyclists should realise that deliberately putting themselves in danger is just plain crazy. So, here's my plea to those holidaymakers out here and cycling around. As it gets hotter it's increasingly difficult to concentrate - but remember one rash move could put you in hospital and there are plenty of British and Irish holidaymakers on the roads also trying (often with considerable difficulty) to remember to drive on the right! I HAD a good laugh this week when, just for curiosity, I called up a British newspaper's on-line archive on wine stories. I couldn't believe the absolute twaddle that has been written on the "sobering" subject over the past four years. Reading all the research conclusions from the so-called "scientific experts" is enough to drive you to drink - big time. Their conclusions include: drinking red wine can lower the risk of heart disease, provides protection against strokes, prevents pancreatic cancer, staves off potentially fatal food poisoning, lowers blood pressure, lowers lung cancer risk, prevent stomach ulcers. It can cut the risk of gullet cancer, prolong peoples' lives, reduce fat storage, cut gallstone risk, make you live five years longer, help you stay slim, strengthen bones, reduce chances of dementia, provide exercise benefits without

IT’S pure fluke but my family have a couple of royal connections. I share a birthday, August 21, with the late Princess Margaret while my son's birthday is on the same day as Prince Philip's. That's June 10. Anyway, this week I'm going to tell you about how I once . . . But hang on a minute. June 10? That's this Sunday, isn't it? Oh, my goodness, I'd better nip out and get my boy a birthday present. But hang on another minute. I believe I'll leave the present until the future. Just now I'm thinking about the past. One Friday afternoon many moons ago I was slumped in front of the telly watching an episode of the kids' show Crackerjack (all together now: 'Crack-erjack!') when Mrs S arrived home. 'Aren't you a bit too old to be watching Crackerjack ("Crack-er-jack!")?' she asked me. 'Probably,' I yawned. 'But after a hard day at work I'm too tired to stand up to change channels. We really must get

sale price and to be more transparent with pricing. If the decision was mine I would not leave such matters to a voluntary code, it would be backed up by law. But then, the real villain in fuel price is the British government in its skyhigh taxation, and I can't help thinking that a reduction of 10p off fuel taxation would do a lot more to help economic growth than any bank quantitive easing (printing money) would achieve. Here in Spain we see changes in the pump prices almost daily, which suggests they are following wholesale prices more closely than in the UK. But isn't it crazy that the price of a litre can drop by five cents whenever you cross the boundary from Alicante province into Murcia? Over the past month the wholesale oil price has dropped by 20 per cent - so let's hope for more price cuts at the pumps very soon. UNFAIR profiteering hitting motorists may soon be a thing of the past, and so may the electrical industry's annoying variety of different appliance plugs. I am delighted with the news that at long, long last a universal plug socket has been invented, which will accommodate the annoying three-pin British plugs, the two-pin continentals and the flimsy American varieties, plus the vast array of national plugs in between. The electrical industry has made billions in supplying the adaptors needed to travel from country to country. The universal socket will put an end to it. The only snag - the electrical industry will make another fortune replacing all the old sockets with the universal one. Makes you sick, doesn't it! SPAIN'S economic doom and gloom goes from bad to worse. If it's not failed banks requiring huge bale-outs the government hasn't got the resources to meet, its sky-high unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, the worst in Europe. And Spain has the wooden spoon again for a slump in manufacturing output, the worst in Europe, worse than even Greece. I'm just looking at this small part of Spain in which we're living, and it may not be representative of the whole, but I can't help thinking the Spanish are cutting their own throats by allowing every other retail outlet to be Chinese, selling Chinese goods and undercutting the price of Spanish or European-made items. A dose of good old-fashioned national protectionism might get Spain and Europe out of the mire.

q

moving a muscle, help mend damaged backs and help you think better. Before you go out to buy a few crates of the stuff, here's what other "experts" conclude...Drinking wine can give you the shakes later in life, expose people to cancer and Parkinson's, increase the risk of cancer by 50% (and two glasses by 60% and in another survey, by 168%!) It is more damaging to the brain than beer, hitting the hippocampus and could cause Alzheimer's. So, perhaps drinking wine may make you live longer but you won't remember anything about it - which seems logical! Two other gems about whether wine is good for you. Don't tread grapes in a closed room like the two Frenchmen who did it and died of carbon monoxide poisoning, and if you've got a cow, give it wine dregs because it may improve the health-giving qualities of milk. I suspect that these results vary so much depending on who is employing the scientists involved - the wine industry or the health lobby! HOW often have you thought that whenever the price of a barrel of oil goes up, the oil industry reacts within seconds to jack up the price of fuel at the pumps, yet when the wholesale price goes down it takes weeks for the pump price to fall. So hats off to the government, which is to ask the oil industry for a voluntary code to peg the pump price to the whole-

hold of one of those newfangled TV remote control thingies. It would certainly make our carpet last longer.' Mrs S smiled and patted her tummy. 'On second thoughts it might prove useful to keep watching Crackerjack ("Crack-er-jack!") when you hear my news. And let's put Clangers, Rupert Bear and Blue Peter on the list, too. You'll certainly need the practice.' I tried to conjure up an all-knowing, allwise facial expression although I hadn't a clue what Mrs S was talking about. She studied my baffled visage at close quarters before commenting: 'I can tell by your confused look that you've no idea what I'm hinting at.' Mrs S sighed. 'David,' she announced. 'I'm having a baby.' In one smooth action I fell off the sofa, jumped to my feet and hared off into the kitchen. I was in there for some time. Eventually, Mrs S called out: 'Why are you hiding? I thought you'd be happy at the prospect of launching the next generation of the Silver family. Don't you want

q

to be a patriarch?' I popped my head around the door. 'Patriarch? Wow! I do like the sound of that.' And then I disappeared again. The banging and crashing noises that had been coming from the kitchen ceased abruptly as I re-emerged into the living room. 'Put your mind at rest. Everything's in hand,' I breathlessly comforted Mrs S. 'I've put pans of water on all four burners on the stove. I've even placed a tray of water under the grill. We should have lashings of hot H2O in a few minutes.' Mrs S stared at me uncomprehendingly. 'Have you finally lost what remains of your mind?' I slapped my forehead hard. 'You know, I think I have. I've only gone and forgotten the towels.' Mrs S grabbed my wrists in a gesture of both reassurance and restraint. 'I want you to sit down, take deep breaths and explain to me slowly what you are doing.' I smiled condescendingly. 'It's your first child so you're probably not aware that when a lady has a baby she needs

lots of hot water and towels. I saw it in a film once.' Mrs S sighed. 'Sometimes I feel that YOU are my first child. But our baby isn't due for another eight months. I've just come back from my first visit to the doctor. 'I'd have asked you to accompany me but I know you're still banned from the surgery for claiming to be suffering from illnesses which died out in the Middle Ages.' 'But I AM middle-aged!' I pointed out and then collapsed onto the sofa as all the adrenaline drained into my feet. 'So you're not due for another eight months? In that case I'll empty all the pans of hot water into the bath and you can have a relaxing soak. I'd bring you up some nice buttered toast but the grill tray will be awash.' Mrs S caressed my brow which was furrowed with concern. 'Just put the kettle on,' she said. 'I think I've got time for

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH LESSON 23

I HOPE you managed last week’s homework without too much difficulty. Here are the answers: I have a ball – Tengo una pelota. I am cold – Tengo frio. I’m from England – Soy de Inglaterra. I speak Spanish – Hablo Español. Are you coming? - ¿Vienes? I am going to read a book – Voy a leer un libro. He is my brother – Él es mi hermano. It is cold – Hace frio. What do you do? - ¿Qué haces? Now that we have a large vocabulary and are using as many of the words as we can, hopefully some of them are beginning to stick in your memory. But, if you’re anything like me, you will be using your notes for many months to come. I am constantly learning new words and having to remember them, which I find I can only do by constant repetition; saying the word over and over during several days until it eventually sticks somewhere in my memory. You need to be committed to learning because as I’ve stated before this is a marathon, not a sprint. It may take several years to become confident enough to hold a full conversation. However, I am sure it will not take that long before you can speak and be understood in short sentences, and you will be able to understand what is being said to you. Take each level step by step and you will get there. This week we are going to take a break from verbs and learn some useful words, beginning with opposites. I will write the English opposite pairs followed by the Spanish translations. Take your time and as you are reading the words in Spanish try to picture an object or person that relates to each of the opposites. For example, for tall and short you may imagine a tall giraffe and a short monkey. Make the images fun but be thinking of the Spanish words.

When a word in Spanish can be masculine or feminine depending on what it relates to I will write the ending o/a for example a tall man would be alto and a tall woman alta, therefore I will write alto/a. So, let’s learn opposites Tall, short = alto/a, bajo/a; old, young = viejo/a, joven; fat, thin = gordo/a, delgado/a; up, down = arriba, abajo; dark, clear/light = oscuro, claro; big, small

= grande, pequeño/a; long, short = largo/a, corto/a, near, far = cerca, lejos; expensive, cheap = caro/a, barato/a. See what other opposites you can find, think of opposite word pairs in English and find out the Spanish equivalents. Now we are going to learn some very important words that you will use on a daily basis - this, these, that and those. In Spanish there are masculine and feminine versions of

these words, but don’t worry, they are very easy to learn. So, here we go. This – este (masc), esta (fem). These – estos (masc), estas (fem). That – ese (masc), esa (fem). Those – esos (masc), esas (fem). Here are some examples of the words in use: This book is green = Este libro es verde. This table is big – Esta mesa es grande. These shoes are mine – Estos zapatos son míos. These houses are expensive – Estas casas son caras. That man is tall – Ese hombre es alto. That chair is red – Esa silla es roja. I have those books – Tengo esos libros. Those shops are closed – Esas tiendas están cerradas. I hope you are enjoying this level of learning and are not getting left behind. It is easy to get carried away and try to learn too much at once, but don’t go too fast. It is always important to check your knowledge any way you can, whether with books, the internet or courses like these. Don’t feel that you are wasting your time if you can’t answer the questions, just go back and revise. If you are finding this work too easy then use this time to revise, which is as important as the initial learning. This type of learning can help you develop but of course cannot be as personal as a class, so please bear with me as I lead you slowly through the learning process and hopefully you will enjoy it, work at it and not give up. You already know so much you should be very impressed with yourself. Week by week your knowledge will grow as you keep learning. This week I am going to give you some revision using the words above. Take your time, remember the gender of the words and see how you get on. Translate the following into Spanish: This cat is fat. Those earrings are very expensive. The shop is near. The boy is young. This is a long street. The tree is tall. The days are long.

WHY DO THEY DO THAT? Top dog psychologist PETER SINGH writes exclusively for The Courier. Check out www.thedogyouneed.com or email Peter at peter@thedogyouneed.com

A LEADING QUESTION I HAVE just finished a consultation, where I met a wonderful little dog who was very well behaved for me. He had a lovely nature and responded well to everything I asked him to do. Throughout the consultation, I never spoke to him and just used my energy and body language. For the owner, though, it was a very different story. The reason I write this piece, is to give you an insight into a dog’s world and how they will view two people very differently. The dog has become very dominant and has started to bite visitors as well as trying to bite his owners. It really is amazing how, for me, he was so well behaved and for the owner he simply wanted to growl and dominate. I do not mention this fact for self gratification. I simply mention it to try to help people see how their errors are maybe causing their dog to take over. First of all, the dog was getting a very small amount of exercise each day, and some days none, which meant there was a lot of frustration building up inside him. Secondly, whenever he decided to jump up on the sofa and invade the owner’s space,

she wanted to get him down off the sofa, but gave him affection with a stroke on the head instead. Whatever the dog wanted to do, she accommodated him and bowed to his every desire. On top of all of this, she was always worrying about him biting her, so she had become a slave to his every demand. She had become extremely anxious about his every move and the dog instantly knew that with the ‘follower‘ energy she was sharing with him, this made her unstable in his eyes. Every dog needs a leader and if the owner can’t lead them with kindness and being firm, then they will lead you, as they are a pack animal and someone has to be in charge. Most aggression cases are all down to a lack of exercise and the dog being the dominant one in the household. So, put simply, if you are experiencing the same problems, make sure you are giving your dogs enough exercise to drain their energy each day. Make sure you are giving them rules and boundaries that you stick to. Finally, make sure your energy is that of a leader and not a follower, so if you ask your dog to do something, don’t shout. Just remain calm and mean what you are asking them to do. Then let nature takes its course and enjoy.

Línea Directa reports:

HOW TO COMPLETE AN ACCIDENT REPORT FORM • This document is essential for determining who is responsible for a traffic accident, which has a direct effect on the price that customers pay when renewing their insurance.

What is an accident report form? An accident report form is a document which outlines the circumstances which have occurred in a car accident. In addition to the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles, the document includes a jointly agreed description of the manoeuvres carried out by the drivers when the accident took place, which plays a key role in determining who is responsible for a traffic accident.

How should it be completed? Línea Directa offers the following advice to complete the form: 1. Columns A and B (blue and yellow), are for the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles. 2. In section 12, (Circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A and the one on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car. 3. If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24. 4. If there is more than one car involved in the accident, also complete section 23, on the reverse side of the form, and include it in the sketch. 5. Sign the form and keep a copy.

My ray of son-shine I WROTE a few weeks ago about having a baby in Spain and my own incredibly positive experience. But what about raising your baby, in particular learning to talk and living in a new culture? For the child, of course, everything is normal. It is natural to be living in a hot country, they don’t know any different. However, the parents may still be adjusting and the demands of a new baby can be difficult at the best of times, let alone when you are adapting to a new lifestyle. Raising a baby through the first few months is the same just about everywhere in the Western world. They feed and sleep and need their nappies changed! But as they grow into walking, talking mini versions of you, how do you ensure they have their identity as a Brit, or whatever nationality you are? Or do they? Is it possible for children born in Spain to remain true to their British roots? I believe it is and the language will go a long way towards achieving this. If a child is brought up bilingual, research suggests that they are slower to speak and in other activities up to the age of seven. Once they reach seven they are on a par with everyone else of their age group, except of course that they are flu-

more in English than Spanish. He is now able to talk to Spanish or English people without getting mixed up and, although he doesn´t fully understand why, just knows there are different words for the same thing. My son was a late talker - I saw children his age or even younger talking away and wondered when he was going to start. But I need not have worried, it took him a while but now it’s keeping him quiet that’s the struggle!

ent in two languages. My son was brought up in an environment which was mainly Spanish. I would practise my own Spanish with him while his father spoke to him only in Spanish. However, I began to realise that his English was lacking. He was confident in Spanish but could not hold a full conversation in English, so I decided to only talk to him in my native language, and it was only a matter of weeks before he was confident enough to speak

As for other aspects of raising a child, all I will say is that this beautiful country is so much healthier and safer than the UK I know. I gladly let my boy play in the park while I write an article or a Spanish lesson, or prepare some work - and I don´t feel the need to keep my eyes on him all the time. Playing in a park is a luxury not afforded to too many children in the UK. Whether it’s the weather, vandalism or because the climbing frames have been removed to comply with ‘health and safety’, there just aren´t the opportunities for young people in the UK like there are in Spain. Of course, it does help that all my local parks have a small cafe where I can sit and relax with a cuppa so the

time can pass quickly for us both. I know Spanish schooling has come in for a lot of criticism from mums and dads who came to Spain when their children were 10+ years old, with little or no Spanish. The parents wonder why their child hasn´t passed his or her exams and why they have to re-sit the year - or they drop out. I’m hoping that as my son has entered schooling in the first year and speaks the language, he will pass through the education system with flying colours. As far as universities or further education is concerned, I am not aware of the standard - but I will research it with him should he want to go. And with my help, his written and spoken English will be to a standard that he can go to an English university should he want to. The downside to having a baby here in Spain is the paperwork. Like everything here, it takes time and to register the child as British - you need to apply to the Embassy in Madrid, and everything costs more like this, but that is the only downside I have found so far. All in all, I much prefer the quality of life my son and I have here, and all being well we will stay for many more years.

THANK heavens the UK has a monarch as a head of state, and I raised my can of beer in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 60 glorious years on the throne. Though I’m not a passionate monarchist, I have clear memories of my first Royal encounter back in 1967. Of course it rained! It was an alleged summer afternoon in the town of Rugby, where we were given the chance to walk down to see Her Majesty open some new gates at Rugby School. It was the biggest drenching of my eight-year-old life, but I was some 20 feet away from the Queen’s black car as she left her engagement, wearing a pink coat. We waved our sodden flags and I had little idea at that early stage of my life that I’d

end up covering some Royal events for the BBC. But that fleeting glance of the Queen has always stayed close to me. Whatever the faults of the Monarchy, isn’t it so much better to have The Queen as the head of UK PLC and the Commonwealth, rather than some jumped-up politician with a charisma by-pass pretending to represent the interests of all British people? The thought of a Tony Blair type becoming a UK President makes me shudder in fear, and it’s the best advert possible for the Queen to continue her work for many years to come, followed by Charles and then William.

Through the Royal gates That’s why Australian voters went for the status quo a few years ago, beating the Republican campaign. They felt that their politicians had made enough of a Waltzing Matilda of things, without having their power further extended. You’d also love to be a fly on the wall during Her Majesty’s weekly audience with the Prime Minister. Her vast experience of matters at home and abroad, with 12 leaders during her reign, would I’m sure have had her biting her Royal tongue on countless occasions, with her corgis whimpering in the corner. Don’t you just hope she’s kept some private diary of her encounters with the great and the good that may appear for future historians to mull over in, say, 100 years’ time? Let’s work this out. You introduce some stupid and illthought-out measures in a UK Budget

like the Pasty Tax and Caravan Tax, which takes away all the publicity from a major reduction in income tax for millions of people. The Labour opposition then slag you off, quite rightly, for the stupidity of what you’ve done. So, as the Government, you take soundings and decide to reverse the changes. Cue the Labour opposition, who then criticise you for doing a U-turn and for changing the things they criticised you for doing in the first place! Neither side, therefore, comes out with any credit from this affair. Labour, for just being opportunistic and behaving like petty politicians, and the Government for creating this unnecessary nonsense from the outset. Is David Cameron the only man in the UK who believes his C u l t u r e Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, acted in a “wise and fair way” in his dealings with the Murdochs over their bid for full control of

From page 10 a cup of tea before I report to the maternity ward in 30-odd weeks.' Ironically, it turned out to be me who finished up in hospital -- that very same night. After having first satisfied my curiosity and looked up the meaning of 'patriarch' in the dictionary, I returned to the kitchen to make a cuppa. But the room was so full of steam from all the water I'd boiled before that I couldn't see a flaming thing and consequently I tripped over the first-aid box which had fallen onto the floor during my earlier rushing-about. 'So tell me how your accident happened,' said the casualty doctor as he dabbed at my scalp wound. 'It was all to do with Mrs S getting pregnant,' I replied. The doctor tutted. 'I'll give you some literature on marital relations advice before you leave. You really don't need to dive off the top of the wardrobe onto the bed, you know. It doesn't quite work like that.' Anyway, a few months later Mrs S came home,

BSKYB? There are times when blind loyalty becomes stupidity, or is there some dirt Hunt is hiding that puts Cameron in the mire, which is being masked by the proverbial political fig leaf? MPs have been complaining that their toilets in the

House of Commons are far too dirty and a management taskforce has been set up to make improvements. This great conclusion came at the public cost of some £20,000 - but, based purely on the amount of verbal diarrhoea that is expunged from the elected members on a daily basis, I can’t say I’m surprised. Perhaps it’s high time for Theresa May and Yvette Cooper (pictured left) to get their Marigolds on, and to stick their brushes around their proverbial U-bends. Now, that really would be a sight for sore eyes!

clutching a small bundle. 'We'll call him Brian,' she announced. 'He's lovely,' I said, tickling the new arrival under the chin. 'But don't you think your timing is a bit off? Fancy getting a puppy just days before our baby is due.' 'We can always treat them as twins,' Mrs S replied. 'We'll just keep the smooth pink one in a cot and the furry fawn one in a basket. Fingers crossed that no-one asks for a blood-typing test.' Thankfully, she was joking. But, some 40 years later, what is certainly no joke is what on earth to get my son for his birthday this Monday. I think I'll just call round to his house to ask if he needs anything. My daughter-in-law answers the door. She looks rather flustered. 'I'll tell you what I NEED!' she tells me. 'Either a bigger heating boiler or a smaller dog. 'Your son is upstairs bathing our Crackerjack ("Crack-er-jack!") and as usual he's used every flaming drop of hot water!'

One potato, two potato, three potato, four There’s nothing better than a new potato. Cover them in butter, or roast them with some garlic and sage, the new potato is versatile and delicious. Great on the side with some roasted meat or pan fried fish, or tossed in a salad, or just alone. Try one of these new potato recipes. GARLIC AND SAGE CRISPY CRUSHED NEW POTATOES Roasted new potatoes don't get much more scrumptious than these sagey babies.

Ingredients 1. 2kg new potatoes 2. 2 tbsp olive oil 3. Large knob of butter 4. 6 garlic cloves, unpeeled and bruised 5. Handful fresh sage leaves

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Bring the potatoes to the boil in a pan of salted water, then simmer for 10 minutes until just tender. Drain. 2. Heat the oil, butter, garlic and sage leaves in a roasting tin in the oven until the butter has melted. Add the potatoes, turn in the butter, then gently squash each potato with a fork. Sprinkle with a little sea salt and roast for 20 minutes until golden and crusty, then turn the potatoes and roast for a further 20 minutes. The potatoes should be crisp and the garlic softened and golden.

CLASSIC NEW POTATO SALAD Why not vary what you stir into this salad? Instead of hardboiled eggs, try peeled prawns, crisp bacon, chicken, good quality tuna or a few chopped anchovies.

Ingredients 1. 1kg evenly sized waxy new potatoes, scraped clean or peeled 2. 4 tsp white wine vinegar 3. 1 tsp Dijon mustard 4. 2 tbsp sunflower or light olive oil 5. 1 bunch of spring onions (about 8), trimmed 6. 90g pickled cucumbers, gherkins or cornichons 7. 3 hard-boiled free-range eggs, peeled 8. 2 tbsp soured cream or crème fraîche 9. ¼ tsp salt 10. 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 11. 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill 12. For the mayonnaise 13. 1 large free-range egg yolk 14. ¼ tsp salt 15. 1 tsp Dijon mustard 16. 1½ tsp white wine vinegar 17. 100ml sunflower oil 18. 50ml olive oil

Method

1. For the mayonnaise, put the egg yolk, ¼ tsp salt, mus-

tard and vinegar into a small bowl and mix together lightly. Very gradually trickle in the oils, beating continuously with a hand-held electric mixer, until you have a smooth, thick emulsion. Season with freshly ground white pepper. 2. Put the potatoes in a pan of well salted water (1 tsp per 600ml), bring to the boil and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until just tender (cooking times will vary according to the freshness, size and variety of your new potatoes). Meanwhile, mix 2 tsp of the vinegar and the mustard together in another small bowl and gradually whisk in the oil to make a smooth, thick vinaigrette. Season to taste and set aside. 3. Drain the potatoes, spread them out on a tray and leave to cool slightly, then cut each one into 2 or 3 chunky pieces. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and gently stir in the dressing, taking care not to break up the potatoes. Leave to cool completely, during which time they will absorb all the dressing. Meanwhile, chop the spring onions, pickled cucumbers and boiled eggs. 4. Put 6 tbsp mayonnaise and the soured cream or crème fraîche into a bowl, then mix in the remaining vinegar, ¼ tsp salt and some white pepper. Stir this into the cold potatoes with the spring onions, pickled cucumbers, parsley, threequarters of the chopped dill and three-quarters of the chopped hard-boiled eggs. Transfer to a clean serving bowl and sprinkle with the remaining egg and dill. Serve at room temperature.

WARM LEMON AND CHIVE POTATO SALAD This potato salad is so easy to make and makes a great side dish to any meal such as Chard, artichoke and blue cheese along with Sprouting broccoli with garlic breadcrumbs.

Ingredients 1. 500g baby new potatoes 2. 50g pancetta or streaky bacon, sliced 3. Grated zest and juice of ½ lemon 4. Small handful fresh chives, snipped 5. 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 6. 1½ tsp Dijon mustard

Method

1. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 12-15 minutes until tender. Drain, halve any large ones, then tip into a serving dish. Meanwhile, fry the pancetta in a pan over a medium-high heat until crisp. 2. Mix the remaining ingredients together and season. Pour over the potatoes and pancetta, and stir to coat.

BABY POTATO AND PEPPER SALAD This salad is a perfect and creative way to use baby potatoes and peppers seasonally.

Ingredients 1kg baby new potatoes (choose a yellow-fleshed salad potato such as Charlotte) 3 tbsp olive oil Grated zest and juice of 1 lime 4 pieces roasted red pepper (from a jar), finely chopped 1 red onion, finely chopped Large bunch fresh flatleaf parsley, roughly chopped

Method

1. Halve any larger potatoes, put into a saucepan over a medium heat and pour over a kettle of boiling water. Bring back to the boil and cook for 15 minutes, or until cooked through but not quite falling apart. 2. Meanwhile, mix the oil, lime zest and juice, red pepper and onion on a large platter. Season with plenty of salt and pepper. 3. Drain the potatoes and set aside until barely warm. Add to the platter with the parsley and toss well. Serve warm or at room temperature with the smoked haddock frittata.

Summer Skin Care Tips

YOU wake up on a beautiful summer’s morning. The sun is shining, birds are singing and everything seems just hunky dory — it’s the perfect day for the beach, to have a swim or a picnic with the family. It is also the perfect opportunity for you to take extra care of your skin. Taking care of your skin should be part of your daily regime irrespective of the season. However, during the summer months, taking care of your skin from the harsh rays of the sun should be your number one priority. Here are a few tips to help you get your best summer skin care regime underway right away. Clean up your act Whether or not you wear makeup, cleaning your face should become as important as brushing your teeth — every morning and every

night. And don’t think that any ordinary soap will do. For your face you need a mild cleanser that is fragrance and chemical free. Fragrances and chemicals only contribute to skin irritations and clogged pores. Go for a trusted brand of cleansers such as Clinique, Clarins, Dior, MAC or any other cosmetic and skin care house with a good reputation. Don’t go for the "cheap stuff" as you will only be cutting your nose to spite your face — literally! The Clinique soap, for instance, can last up to 12 months, so it’s a small price to pay for good,

clean skin. Hype up on hydration During the summer months, keeping your skin hydrated is vital in order to avoid any unnecessary, not to mention unattractive dryness. Hydrate your skin by making sure that you are drinking enough water and also using a quality mois-

turiser. For your face, make sure you purchase a specialist product — it may be expensive, but one bottle usually lasts you about three months and it’s well worth the investment. For the rest of your body, use a rich hydrating body cream such as Aqueous cream, Johnsons and Johnsons or Nivea. Splurge on the sunscreen Never, ever leave the house without making sure that your face is well protected with adequate sunscreen. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to be in your car the whole day; the rays of the sun are extremely powerful and can penetrate right through your windshield. And if you’re deliberately going out into the sun for a picnic or to laze on the beach, make sure you smear sunscreen all over your body every two hours.

THE BIG ISSUE ON CHOLESTEROL Although cholesterol is one of the most valuable substances in the human body, cholesterol levels have become the source of much anxiety in the last couple of years. Cholesterol is a fat-like alcohol that travels through the blood attached to a substance known as lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are of 2 main types; High density lipoprotein (HDL) also known as good cholesterol and Low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol. Needless to say, Lipoproteins are clearly not cholesterol. HDL is mistakenly referred to as good cholesterol because it carries cholesterol away from the arteries into the liver. On the other hand, LDL carries cholesterol to the arteries. Cholesterol is at the core of our existence. It is needed for building and maintaining cell walls and structures which form the very framework for our support. The human brain is particularly rich in cholesterol and around 25% of all cholesterol in the body is accounted for by the brain. Every cell and every structure in the brain and the rest of our nervous system needs cholesterol, not only to build itself but also to accomplish its many functions. The eyes and brain of an unborn baby requires large amounts of cholesterol. Additionally, cholesterol is essential for synthesizing a number of critical hormones, including the sex hormones. Most of the cholesterol we need (75%) is made by the body, and the rest has to come from food. And scientific studies have conclusively demonstrated that cholesterol

from food has no effect on the level of our blood cholesterol. This is because cholesterol is such an essential part of our human physiology that the body has very efficient mechanisms to keep blood cholesterol at a certain level. The problem with cholesterol is that it can become damaged. Cholesterol that occurs naturally in food is not harmful to health, but can become so if it is damaged by excessive heat or harsh food processing methods. It is this damaged cholesterol that causes heart disease and hardening of the arteries. In other words, if you have significant amounts of damaged cholesterol in your blood circulation, you do not want a lot of LDL to carry this cholesterol to your arteries, but you want a lot of HDL available to shuttle the damaged cholesterol away from your arteries. Although it is true that a high HDL in the blood will protect a person against heart diseases, what is clearly more important is to take the necessary steps to avoid eating foods cooked at high temperatures or highly processed food. Several scientific studies have also shown that certain plant fibres such as guar gum and carrageenan support fat and cholesterol metabolism. And these fibres have been used very successfully for cholesterol maintenance. Studies also continue to support the health benefits of tea. Green and black tea has been found to support already normal cholesterol. Also the leaves of the Napal catus have the unique ability to bind and trap fat and certain sugars consumed during a meal and prevent their absorption into the body. Reducing the amount of fat and sugar absorbed during a meal plays a role in cholesterol metabolism as well as weight reduction. To find out more about the plant supplements discussed as well as for questions, please email contact@medb.es.

editor@thecourier.es COURIER POSTBAG: YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS

PAWS: The feral facts WE have been alerted to unpleasant and certainly untrue slights against PAWS Animal Rescue and would welcome the opportunity through this medium, to set the record straight. PAWS Animal Rescue, operating on Thursday mornings from the area in front of Banco Sabadell, La Marina, would like to state unequivocally, that we have absolutely no association with any other animal welfare groups in the area and indeed, provide an exclusive section of animal care. For more than seven years, PAWS has been responsible for the monitoring, health and neutering of the feral cat population in La Marina. Female cats are plotted, trapped, removed to the vet for overnight treatment, then returned to their family units. Any kittens are re-homed. As

a result, no longer is the Urbanisation overrun with very sick cats, bodies and faces deformed by cancers and feline AIDS. We have financed humane termination where necessary. All of this work has been very costly. In excess of €100,000 has been raised from the sale of generously donated goods and clothes. Not a single cent has been awarded to us from the local council! All monies received are meticulously accounted for and our vet bills record exact expenditure for treatments, medicines, euthanasia etc. Cash donations are always receipted and thanked. Money from the Thursday sale is counted by the volunteers present and banked the following day. PAWS accounts are open to scrutiny upon request..

It is true we have a vet bill of €4,000 still outstanding. Economic times are very hard but we do our best! We invite readers to consider ways in which they can be of help to enable us to continue providing good service in the La Marina area. Donations may be made directly though any branch of the St. Anton's Vets or to our account at Banco Sabadell, La Marina.. Remember, it only takes a few unaffordable neutering for the situation to become out of control again ! We rely upon steady and on-going support and assure that every donation will be gratefully received and faithfully applied. IRENE WALLACE, La Hoya, Elche. Tel. 965 455403 (full address supplied)

FUTURE’S BRIGHT WITH LORENTE AS a member of CLARO of some six years standing, I feel I have to reply to the letter from Graham Robinson, who with others resigned recently in a disgraceful display of bad taste which left the majority of CLARO members appalled. He had every right to resign on principle if that’s how he felt, and his remarks re the past animosity against the PP party were largely true. But as they say, a week is a long time in politics. CLARO was created with the sole aim of getting a fairer deal for the people of the Costa, which raises 50% of the total revenue for Orihuela, and in the past has seen very little returned. The alliance with the CLR party seemed a good idea at the time. However, from day one after the election Bob Houliston was subjected to an intolerable situation by Pedro Mancebo who, possibly frustrated by not getting the position of Mayor, made the Councillor of the Coast’s job untenable, gradually removing most powers and leaving Bob Houliston, as an honourable man, with no option other than to resign.

He could have sat tight, taken his fee and done nothing. Since then, Bob as an independent Councillor has repeatedly voted with the best interests of the Costas, on many occasions against the PP party and also at times against the Government. He as an independent Councillor forced the other parties to realise CLARO is a party which has stayed true to its aims and will not bow down to some of the bullying tactics of the Government. In his quiet, gentlemanly way, Bob has acted, always with the backing of his committee and extended committee, to further the interests of those who gave him their votes in the last election. With this in mind he had discussion with the PP and after meeting with Monica Lorente, we CLARO members have been impressed by her admission that in the past, Orihuela city had to a great extent been neglectful of the coast. Rest assured with Bob looking over her shoulder, this situation will be addressed in the future. We as members all feel Monica has learned from the past, and the future looks brighter for all of us. I WOULD just like to comment on Tony Mayes’ item in Issue 66, headlined No More Pest Sellers. I walk through Torrevieja quite a few times each week and who ever gave Tony this info is telling porkies: Today I walked from the fountain end of the Market to Playa Cura. WITH the approaching tourist period, perhaps you would print the music laws of Valencia so THAT cafe/bar owners know what they can do, and residents know when they can complain. The law categorises cafes/bars/restaurants and cafeterias as needing a licence for sound. Then they can then have karaoke, music, bingo etc. As a rough guide, the noise must be kept to a level that cannot be heard from around 20 metres away. Windows and doors must be kept closed and speakers kept inside. Premises can stay open until 1.30am, then must be vacated and only the proprietor can remain inside behind closed doors. Special events such as charity fundraisers, celebrations or fiestas depend on permission being sought and the owner having the relevant paperwork filled in and agreed in plenty of time. Obviously it depends on the location of the property pants, wrist bands, wooden toys and the proximity to other etc as they do and have done for bars/cafes,restaurants and months. Showtime: A pressing problem

WITH regard to your comments on Barry Weston’s letter regarding free tickets for the Press, I tend to agree with him. Why should a charity give up two paying seats so that a critic and ‘friend’ can write a favourable comment about the show? We are not talking about long running West End shows but small am-dram shows that have, generally, a few performances. Also most of the shows will have finished by the time your critique is published. Another interpretation of your paper’s stance is that if you don't give

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain four years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Alexia wanted to know how to increase the FIXED: Derek was pulling out his hair with the frustrating memory on her laptop after receiving messages from way that Hotmail deals with its auto-complete suggestions. AVG

Q

Hello Richard. Can you recommend a good defragment programme I could use, as AVG keeps coming up asking me to close my laptop down as I don't have very much memory. I've cleared all the unwanted emails, sent, deleted, drafts etc., and any documents, pictures, so I think the laptop needs a good cleaning out of its memory. Hope you can help, I've looked on Google, but I'm a bit apprehensive about downloading anything else on top of what I've already got. Kind regards, Alexia Hi Alexia, whilst it’s true that if your computer’s hard drive is highly fragmented, performing a defrag on it will help improve system performance it’s also true that Windows 7 computers are set to automatically defragment on a regular basis so this is probably not the reason for your problem. You can check your defrag schedule, run a defrag or change the schedule by clicking on the start button, typing “Disk Defragmenter”, you will see an icon appear with the same name, just click on it to see what the setup is.

A

From your email it sounds to me like the laptop needs to have more RAM added, RAM is the “working memory” of your computer and shouldn’t be confused with the hard drive where you store your pictures, emails etc. If your computer is running out of memory (as reported by AVG), then it’s the RAM that its running out of and not the hard drive so removing pictures etc. won’t make much difference unless your hard drive is very full which is unlikely on an computer just 18 months old.

Hi Richard, I use Hotmail. When one of my friends changes their e-mail address I go to my contacts and delete it but when I want to send them an e-mail I still have both addresses. How do I delete an address when I send them an e-mail? Derek

Hi Derek, yes it’s annoying isn’t it – you are not the only person with this issue. Hotmail automatically offers the email address of anyone that you have previously communicated with as soon as you start to type their name. As you have found, if I used to communicate with someone called john@gmail.com who has recently changed their email address to johnspain@gmail.com as soon as I start to type the email address, Hotmail will offer both the old and new addresses, this feature is called autocomplete and yes it’s annoying. Hotmail thinks it’s being helpful but it’s not, especially as you mention that you have gone to the trouble of updating the email address in the contact record within Hotmail. You will be pleased to learn that this is a setting that you can change within your Hotmail options, just do the following… 1. Sign in to your Windows Live Hotmail account. 2. Click Options then More Options in the top right hand portion of the email page 3. Under Customizing Hotmail, choose Advanced privacy settings look at the settings for Auto-complete settings. 4. Change the setting to “Only suggest people in my contact list” 5. Click Save …Hotmail will now only offer autocomplete suggestions from contacts in your contact list so as long as you keep that up to date then you won’t have any frustrating problems. Update: Hi Richard, thanks very much for your advice. It has worked perfectly. Derek

ADVICE: Annika wanted to know what to do when she received an error message about plugins being out of date.

Hi Richard, I wonder what this means – “some plugins used by this page are outdated' - it comes up all the time. Can I start the update for that? Or what to do? Have a nice day. Annika Hi Annika, your web browser is simply informing you that some of the plugins (small programs designed to help you perform certain actions online like checking that websites are safe to use for example) are out of date, you should accept the link to update them.

Recession bricks up property trillions UK HOMEOWNERS are sitting on a property goldmine worth £5.6 trillion, a study has found. The huge sum may offer some comfort at a time when families and pensioners are struggling to keep pace with the biggest squeeze on the cost of living in 60 years. During the consumer and house price boom of the 1980s and the early 2000s many homebuyers took out second mortgages to unlock the cash in their homes to improve living standards, buy new cars and take exotic holidays. Pensioners also borrowed against their homes through the controversial Home Income Plans, which left many at risk of losing the roof over their heads. However, in today’s double-dip recession, the £5.6 trillion value of property remains largely untapped as families are less inclined to increase home loans at a time when they might lose their jobs.

Complete with slides of the varied wildlife and spectacular scenery, Ray gave a fascinating talk on the islands and how they influenced the work of Charles Darwin. U3A then heard about the work of Friends of Avinença (FoA). FoA is involved in many projects in the north of Valencia and visits places not open to the general public, including the Loggerhead Turtle

By HELEN ATKINSON IN the wake of a showpiece spectacular in Torrevieja last year, Joe Longthorne is set to return to Spain this summer Longthorne will perform in Torrevieja, Denia, Costa Calida, and Mazarron/La Manga during August. He will also be showcasing in Gibraltar, Majorca, Nova/Magaluf and Palma. And as he’ll be hot-footing it here after concerts in Blackpool this month, it will be a gruelling summer for the entertainer

Spanish tour for Joe Longthorne who has fought cancer in recent years. But, says Longthorne: “I am feeling fantastic.” Longthorne was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent treatment in 1990. In 2003 he was told he had leukaemia and he had a bone marrow transplant in 2005 after he appealed for a donor.

At that time Longthorne, 57, was seriously ill in hospital having contracted pneumonia and was given the last rites by a priest. Ahead of his summer shows in Blackpool and Spain, Longthorne - mostfamed for his Shirley Bassey impersonation - along with Elvis, Sinatra, and others - said: “I feel fine. I watch what I eat

and drink plenty of water. And top up at night time with two pints of lager!” Longthorne also spoke of friend Englebert Humperdinck, who flopped in the Eurovision Song Contest. “Englebert is a friend of mine. It was a big gamble to do the Eurovision. But a lot of it is political,” said Longthorne, who has also performed at Benidorm Palace.

HOP, ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

Raving Rupert will sock it to audiences at US-style bash IF you fancy whipping off your shoes and dancing to the best sounds of the 50s and 60s, then the Sock Hop is for you. Sock hops originated at high school dances in the United States where dancers had to remove their shoes to protect the highly polished wooden floors of gymnasiums and cafeterias. And now, for the first time, the sock hop is coming to venues on the Costa Blanca. But don’t worry, you won’t have to remove your shoes - unless you want to but you will have to enjoy great music and like a good bop, or at the very least watching others getting energetic on the dance floor. Dress up in 50s and 60s style if you feel like it, and if you decorate your socks you

will be in with a chance of winning the best-dressed sock prize. There will be fabulous rock ’n’ roll music live from Raving Rupert who has appeared with Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Shakin Stevens, Matchbox and Marty Wilde, plus many more stars. Support for the tour will come from Peter Day and Fiona McLean of Jukebox Legends, who have also worked with some of the top names from the 60s. Jukebox Promotions, the tour promoters, promise a show “filled with nostalgia, excitement and foot tapping music from start to finish; we defy you to sit still”. Culture takes to Playa Flamenca streets DESPITE bad weather, the fourth Merca-de-Art (art, craft and collectors fair) held last Sunday in Playa Flamenca was a great success. More than 60 stallholders braved the elements, with artists, crafters and collectors offering everything from paintings and sculptures to stamps and vinyl discs. The event was organised by the Orihuela Concejalía de Cultura with help from volunteers from the Voluntariado Cultural.

It is the job of the Consejalía de Cultura to promote and sponsor cultural activities in Orihuela, Orihuela Costa and the pedanias. The Merca-de-Arte events aim to help artists and artisans by giving them opportunties to display and sell their work. The events create open-air exhibition spaces and, effectively get culture out onto the streets where it can by enjoyed by all. The ayuntamiento prepared the

area for the fair, installed display tables and chairs, all free of charge. Of the 62 artists, crafters and collectors who turned up, twelve were from the Orihuela Costa. The bad weather did force a few of the stallholders to leave early but most stayed to enjoy the day, their spirits not dampened by the rain. Scirocco GTS 2012 revealed Volkswagen has announced a new Scirocco GTS will debut at the 2012 Leipzig Auto Show - 30 years after the original made its debut in 1982. With the same 210hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine as the existing Scirocco GT, this is little more than a styling exercise. But it's packed full of nostalgic touches including full length racing stripes and a dimpled gear knob that pays homage to the golf ball style item fitted to the original. Yes, just

like the early Golf GTIs. In fact, the original Scirocco GTS was sold with a GTI badge in the UK. Which is why we’re less familiar with the GTS label here 210hp and a six-speed manual gearbox mean 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 149mph. Similarly, expect it to claim fuel economy of around 38.2mpg with 172g/km CO2 emissions. This is assuming none of the bodywork modifications have significantly altered the

aerodynamics. The GTS gets new front and rear bumpers, new side sills, and a rear diffuser and roof spoiler borrowed from the high performance Scirocco R. The wheels are 18-inch 'Thunder' alloys, with red-painted brake callipers behind.

There's also red detailing for the door mirror caps, adding to the racy looks. Sadly, there are no plans to bring the VW Scirocco GTS to the UK, and Volkswagen hasn't yet revealed any pricing details. It goes on show in Leipzig on 2 June.

Chevvy Utd Catch that David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd have set a new Guinness World Record for the furthest golf tee shot caught in a moving car. Coulthard caught the golf ball, which was travelling at 178mph, while driving a Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster at 120mph – making the catch a full 275 yards from the tee. The remarkable (and slightly bizarre) world record was made last week at the Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey: the same location where Top Gear is filmed. Coulthard himself admitted it was “definitely one of the most unusual things

Chevrolet will replace Audi as official car supplier to the team, a deal that’s been in place since 2004. The move by Chevrolet parent firm GM is part of plans to broaden the value brand’s worldwide appeal – Manchester United is the world’s most popular football team, with an estimated fanbase of more than 650 million. Chevrolet will reveal full details of the deal at a press conference in Shanghai, where the English Premier League team has more than 100 million fans. Growth in China is considered a key opportunity for Chevrolet. David Gill, Manchester United CEO, said: “Although part of two very different industries, Chevrolet and Manchester United share many of the same values. “Like the Club, it is steeped in history having recently celebrated its centenary and it has also grown to be a global brand, selling cars in more than 140 countries. “Above all, it too strives to be the best in

its field and I am delighted to welcome Chevrolet as our Official Automotive Partner.” “Manchester United has some of the most passionate supporters of any sporting club in the world,” said GM global chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick. “The Chevrolet family is proud to partner with Manchester United and is fully committed to putting these fans at the centre of everything we do.” Richard Arnold, Manchester United commercial director, added: “This is… the first time we have teamed up with a U.S. automotive partner and with the growing popularity of the Club and English football in America, we are hoping the relationship will allow us to further expand our fan base in the country.” The deal will see the Chevrolet bowtie logo appear on pitchside advertising hoardings, player benches and interview backdrops, although Aon will remain the team’s key shirt sponsor.

Cardboard art

British artist Chris Gilmour, 34, creates amazing lifelike art using just cardboard and glue. His works range from an Aston Martin DB5 and Fiat 500 to a Harley-Davidson. The objects are so realistic that during past exhibitions people have tried to interact with them as if they were real items, just covered in paper. Trying to sit in the Aston is not recommended! Gilmour has taken recycling to another level, creating his life-size art from used and discarded boxes found on the street. Many of the works even feature some of the old branding as a token reminder of the packaging’s mundane past life.

Based in Italy, Gilmour started his cardboard art by experimenting with small domestic items, such as coffee pots and a typewriter, before moving on to larger, more complex projects like the Lambretta motorbike and Ford Hot Rod. The artist creates his sup-

port-structure-free creations using just two components boxes and adhesive. 'I like the idea of concentrating on the material in its 'natural state' and playing with the idea of these beautiful objects represented with a material from the waste basket,' he explains.

I’ve ever been asked to do with a car. “Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a midair golf ball even more exciting. “I am honoured to have received the Guinness World Record for the furthest golf shot caught in a car.” David George, Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars marketing director, said the world record stunt was done to mark Mercedes’ association with golf ahead of the Open Championship. “It was great to set a new world record in the process thanks to an amazing effort from David and Jake.”

TRELI ON THE TELLY

UNDERDOG LEANNE IS SIMPLY THE BEST WASN’T it interesting that despite the style and uniqueness of Bo and Tyler, the unfancied Leanne Mitchell won The Voice final on BBC1? She’d not been given a prayer since having Ruth Brown in her ‘Team Tom’ group. But the good old British public love an underdog and also that she’s really good and got better and better. She had the purest voice in a very entertaining final, but the end moments went flat, as Leanne was just mobbed by competitors and not given an encore to wrap up the whole series. That aside, The Voice has produced some fine singers and been an enjoyable contrast to 'bearpit' shows elsewhere. And there lies the big problem. In the live contests, as opposed to the blind audi-

BBC has that much need to compromise integrity for some higher ratings. I was a complete pussycat in my managerial interviewing days compared to the vicious array of snakes that Lord Sugar assembled for The Apprentice final on BBC1. But the winner, Ricky Martin, struck gold with the really nasty Claude. Having torn Ricky to shreds over his personal resume, Lord Sugar’s chief boot boy then praised his business plan for tions and the battle rounds, an employment agency. For viewers turned off because the first time ever, Claude they’re used to judges argu- was happy, so you knew at ing and a duff competitor that early stage who the winthat’s easy fodder for every- ner was going to be. body to chew over. Punk and New Wave That’s the major issue that music in the stagnating has to be addressed when Britain of the 70s was such a The Voice comes back next breath of fresh air for a year. to stop his Catholic mummy and daddy from finding it and asking awkward questions! So, it’s a massive thumbsup to the new BBC4 documentary series, Punk Britannia, which has so far been a marvellous trawl through the archives with some fantastic rare footage. And of course, you have modern day interviews with the performers who, with the bold exception of John Lydon of the Pistols, all look nice and respectable - but also sadly rather old. ITV1 achieved the impossible last Saturday, with a replacement show for Lemonaid that had almost the same stench of waste about it. It starred the excellent impressionist Alistair McGowan in a sports version of TV Burp, called You Cannot be Serious, which aptly summed up the total

lack of comedy during the half hour. Yes, McGowan did a great impression of England football coach Roy Hodgson, but that was about it in a turgid show that was embarrassing to sit through. It was produced by the same company that makes TV Burp, and even had Harry Hill’s name on the ending credits. Harry knows what makes people laugh, so why has he associated himself with this turkey? Has he not seen the hilarious A League of their Own on Sky One? The Americans are the kings of producing glitzy, trashy dramas and there’s now a brand new kid on the block on Channel 4 and E4 called Revenge. It ticks all the boxes with a good looking cast, improbable plot twists, and an opening scene in the first

episode with an engagement party where the groom has been shot on the beach. And there lies the story, where the bride-to-be barely sheds a tear as she’s apparently behind it all, and then a big five-month flashback gets going. We learn the back story of a woman called Emily Thorne (played by Emily Van Camp) whose real name is actually Amanda and who is after vengeance for the way her father was treated. Emily/Amanda has a big hit-list of people she’s after, and so the fun begins. We’ve got villains, goodies, rich folk, beautiful folk, so just crack open a can or a bottle of wine, and enjoy one of the few new hits of the last American season that’s already been booked for a second series.

Horoscopes Aries March 21 - April 19 Most of your ideas will turn out to be excellent ones today. Avoid having too many ideas, otherwise you may fall from your station. Damnation awaits you from every angle. Your only hope is to provide mankind with the cure for greed. I've written hundreds upon hundreds of horoscopes, but this one is the most special.

Taurus April 20 - May 20 Tomorrow will bring fresh excitement and vigour to your otherwise dull self. Having had a taste of victory last week, this week may seem like the ideal opportunity to go wild. The smoothness of your arms are testiment to all your work in that area. Prepare to gape widely at the beautiful horror you'll experience this week.

Gemini May 21 - June 20 "Deliver us from evil" they said. Perhaps this week would be a good time to start living as though this were possible. Your spine is going to feel a tingling sensation later this day and you're not going to be able to attribute it to anything specific. Hair can be red. Hair can be blue. You have some hair. And I have some too.

Cancer June 21 - July 22 Wild stallions won't be able to drag you away from the multiple love-in you may or may not encounter today. You can't hide from the rest of the day, so I suggest you burst headlong into it without waiting for anyone to catch up. Cancelling a directdebit may land you in hot water with an authority.

Fault for your situation can be accredited to anyone you wish - go nuts! Your footsteps will seem louder today as you break in new shoes. Harsh words may be spoken by a loved one today.

Virgo August 23 - September 22 Ten weeks of doing what you do best, and you're still no closer to achieving your goal. Silver foil can make a good hat, it's true. However, it can also be used as a sheathe should you find yourself lucky one lunchtime. Discarded sandwiches may prove lucky for any local tramps.Good fortune will stalk you like a mean spirited vulture today.

Libra September 23 - October 22 Your brain is overflowing with ideas, some of which are truly brilliant and you must focus on making your dreams a reality. A nearby construction company may approach you this morning in an attempt to fool you into thinking that the world is about to explode. Banking on anyone this week? Don't let them let you down like they did me.

Scorpio October 23 - November 21 The stars predict rocky times for you and a loved one. Avoid making love in cramped places. Hearing clicking noises in your head is not a good sign for you today. Laugh and the world laughs at you. Or at least, it'll seem like that this week. Astronomy is to gastronomy as it is to git.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 You deserve praise for your excellent work. Damage To The Central Nervous System - a phrase you're going to be hearing a lot over the coming days. Parts of you feel like giving up the ghost today, but feeding those parts with ice-cream and bacon bits may revive them, to an extent. Much of your body weight tends to be distributed in a specific place - but that may start shifting today.

Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Half of what I say is meaningless...the other half is pure gold. Ten to one may seem like fair odds, but then how likely are you to be able to successfully breed Pandas with Llamas (a Panama). Kissing horses in an otherwise empty paddock is fair game today. Enjoy yourself and try not to go too wild.

Aquarius January 20 - February 18 You have a very positive outlook on life that may have to shift slightly to fit in with a new persona that may be forced onto you today. Paper with little squiggles on it will find its way into your pocket today. Your magical fingers may be called into practice this week. Life will throw many things at you over the coming months.

Pisces February 19 - March 20 Reading through a dictionary is the least effective way to learn more about the world. Get out there! Today is a day like any other, try not to expect too much from this segment of 24 hours. Armchair politicians will affect your life today as they rise from their dank pits and begin to conquer the known world.

EURO 2012 France v England (Kick-off 5.00pm). Adrian Chiles presents coverage of the opening clash in Group D from the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine. England last appeared at a European Championship in 2004, when they were also drawn alongside this evening's opponents in the group stage. While both teams progressed to the knockout phase, it was France who topped the table after all three matches had been played, thanks largely to their 2-1 victory over Sven-Goran Eriksson's men in the opening encounter in Lisbon.

KILLERS BEHIND BARS: THE UNTOLD STORY New series. Professor David Wilson uses cuttingedge criminological techniques to examine the crimes committed by three of Britain's most notorious murderers and try to link them to more unsolved cases. He begins by focusing on `Suffolk Strangler' Steve Wright , who is presently serving a life sentence for the murders of five women who worked as prostitutes in Ipswich, and finds evidence suggesting he may also have claimed at least one victim in Norfolk.

Anna Richardson brings another family to task for their eating habits. The White-Olivers want to review their diet for the sake of daughter Ellie. Mum Leanne is classified as obese, but has no idea where she is going wrong, while dad Craig, a former professional footballer, claims he does not eat too much. What will they say after being confronted with footage of their compulsive snacking? There is also an experiment to test the theory that dining in company makes people eat more.

EXTRAODINARY PEOPLE New series. The documentary strand returns with the stories of three young people overcoming huge medical challenges. It begins with Terri Calvesbert, who at the age of 22 months suffered devastating burns in a house fire - injuries so severe that her rescuers at first mistook her for a charred doll. As she turns 15 and begins to take her future into her own hands, this documentary charts her recovery, including an operation to create a thumb, and follows Terri on a trip to LA to meet other young people with similar experiences.

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

OPEN FIRE

AT a time when there is no escape on the BBC schedule from a programme called ‘The Voice’, it's a pitiful irony to reflect on how little we hear from the Voice of Golf. ‘’Do you know there was a year when we covered 16 events?'’ says Peter Alliss, sounding as exasperated as the rest of us at the sad decline in the Corporation's golfing output. He told the Daily Mail: ‘’Now we're down to two or three. I'm disappointed, obviously. Could the BBC have spent their money in better ways? I don't hear the move to Manchester being spoken of with considerable acclaim. ‘’But the bottom line is it's difficult to compete against Sky's bottomless pit. It doesn't matter how good a poker player you

Master the lob shot for great escapes

IF you are stuck behind a bunker, hitting a lob shot is your best option, as long as the lie isn't too bare. The first thing I do in this situation is open the face of my 60 degree wedge so it plays more like 80 degrees. It's important when you do twist the top of the shaft to open the face BEFORE taking your grip. In the correct position the logo on the grip will point to your right. To slide the clubface under the ball, producing the ideal high trajectory, allow the club to move on an outto-in path through the downswing. As you cut across the ball at impact you'll add loft to the shot. It's important as you do this however, not to lean back in a bid to help the ball into the air. This is a fatal mistake that causes fat and thin strikes.

are, if you've got £50 and the other bloke has pots of money, he'll beat you in the end.'’ The Beeb have been beaten to such an extent that the only exclusive live men's event left is The Open, and Alliss can envisage a day when even that asset is stripped. He says: “It only takes a change of committee at the Royal and Ancient to look at a huge offer and think, "Yes, we know the BBC have no adverts and a large audience but how can we turn this down?" It's sad when you look at what BBC have to offer. Their viewing figures for the Masters peaked at 2.1 million while Sky topped out at 500,000. I do think the European Tour was weak when they were taking some of their events away from the BBC. I'd imagine Sky were saying they

A new Sky cloud hovers over BBC

would cover 100 events if they had exclusive rights to everything but if some events stay with the BBC it would only be 37. The tour got nervous. Like the football authorities, they were desperate to have Sky's money to keep everyone happy, but it seems to me they had a stronger hand to play. What would Sky have done to fill all those hours on their various channels if they didn't have golf? I have always enjoyed the PGA Championship at Wentworth, the flagship event of the European Tour either as a visitor when I was in the UK or on TV. And this year was no exception. But sadly the BBC coverage of the PGA Championship is coming to an end - and a sad day it is. This year’s tournament saw Sky Sports cover the first two days with Ewan Murray, Bruce Critchley, Mark Roe et al while BBC Sport’s team comprised Alliss the master, Ken Brown, Andrew Cotter and Hazel Irvine. This was an opportunity to have a direct comparison on the same event outside USA TV hosting. In my opinion BBC will be sorely missed, along with World Hall of Fame personality Alliss. Sky’s commentators try to convince the audience how good they are at the technical side of golf. An example is Roe, who said of a particular player’s shot, “Another two yards to the right and it would have been sensational”. REALLY? Then there’s coach Simon Holmes going on about shoulders over rotating and arms being locked under the rib cage. A prominent golf coach he maybe, but a TV personality he ain’t. Compare that to an Alliss comment when seeing a young boy with a neat haircut. “Very smart compared with today’s footballers who look they have escaped from the chain gang” embracing a level of interspersed commentary we can all appreciate. Or Maureen Medhill on the course telling you the simple things. “Peter, the ball is sitting up but difficult to hit” - as opposed to Howard Clark’s “this breaks from the right” when in fact the opposite happens. Okay, BBC may not be everybody’s cup of tea but the presenters are refreshing, with Hazel Irvine fronting the programme in a neat and tidy manner and a Scottish lilt to go with it. Compare that to Robert Lee’s arrogant humour as he tries to impress in a studio with other humourless commentators Dennis Pugh and Tony Johnstone. It’s such a pity that if we want to watch golf, short of switching off the sound we have to listen to the wittering of those who are trying to impress us with their expertise. Can we not start up a petition to get BBC to change their mind and not drop full coverage of golf? Please, please don’t leave it all to Sky or we’ll have to have a Leveson Enquiry.

THE FOUL AND THE PUSSY CATS

PC war on swearing is a f***ing disgrace I CANNOT believe that officials of a lower league are to start monitoring swearing on the football field in a bid to curb foul language. And of all the places in the world, they are choosing the roughest, toughest area south of the border to do it – the North East. The Northern League is situated in an area where pits, shipyards and hard living off the sea dictated the nature of the place. Life has never been easy up there and the air frequently turns blue for all sorts of reasons. And that's just the women! Saturday afternoon at the football match, whether on or off the pitch, was always a place to let off steam. So if we are not to be allowed to do it there, where are we going to be allowed to do it? And no, I am not going to join a gym at over-inflated prices and team up with a load of ponces prancing about in lycra. Those that have probably never kicked a ball, never mind anything else in anger, are now dictating how we should behave - just because they think it’s the right way to do so. If we give in to this, what will be next? A ban on spitting

on sports fields? Or teams turning out in Desmonds (tutus) to appease the gay brigade? I'm sorry but it's bad enough that the current England manager is being undermined by the racist lobby over his team selection. But I ask you, even if Roy Hodgson was told by the FA to leave Rio Ferdinand out, who is to say that is the wrong decision? Leaving John Terry out would have been judging a man before he gets to court. And somebody please tell me why Ferdinand did not object to Terry calling other players names over the years while he was playing alongside him. He undoubtedly will have done if the allegations made by Rio's brother Anton stand up in court. No, if Hodgson was going to pick Ferdinand he would have done so at the outset and not when a player gets injured and a replacement is required. Face facts. Rio Ferdinand is NOT going to Poland and the Ukraine - and it is probably a good job that he isn't - for other reasons, too. Just imagine the fallout if the supposed racist violence depicted in last week's BBC

HEARTBREAK New Villarreal coach dies hours after taking job THE sudden death of new Villarreal coach Manuel Preciado has stunned Spanish football. The former Sporting Gijon boss died of a heart attack just 24 hours after agreeing a deal with relegated Villarreal to take over for the 2012-13 season. Preciado, 54, was sacked by Gijon in January after twice earning them promotion into Spain's top flight. In April 2011, his team ended Jose Mourinho's nine-year unbeaten home league record when they defeated Real Madrid. As a player Preciado was a defender who began his career at Racing Santander and also appeared for Linares, Mallorca, Alaves, Ourense and Gimnastica. After retiring in 1992, he began coaching with Gimnastica in the mid-1990s and also had spells in charge of Racing B, Racing

Santander, Levante and Murcia before joining Sporting Gijon in 2006. He led them into the Spanish top division in his second season and spent six years with the club. Real Madrid manager Mourinho wrote an open letter on his club's website, saying: "Manolo (Manuel's nickname) was always an honourable opponent, who I got to know well when he came to visit us in March. "He had everything that I like in a person and in sportsmen: character, openness and the courage to fight against blows. "We have been left by a football figure and above all by a very special person. My memory of him will be heartfelt and permanent." Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas said on Twitter: "I can't believe the bad news I just woke up with.

Hugs for the family of Manolo Preciado. RIP my friend." Another Barcelona player, Gerard Pique, called Preciado "one of the greats of the sport." A Villarreal club statement said: "Villarreal want to express their deepest sorrow at the sad loss and want to offer their condolences to his family and all his relatives." Preciado's record of 232 official matches in charge at Sporting, who were also relegated last season, is second only to Jose Manuel Diaz Novoa, who presided over 282 games. A statement on the Sporting website read: "With deepest regret, Sporting Gijon wish to express their sorrow at this sad loss, for someone who formed an integral part of this club's history, and send their deepest condolences to his family in this time of grief."

Panorama programme ensues in Poland and the Ukraine. Ferdinand, who appears keen to Tweet about anything that rankles him, would have a field day and it is debatable whether England or the tournament would be allowed to continue if incidents do take place and the PC brigade get their knickers in a right old twist. So let's hope none of it does happen. A win or two for England early doors and it will all be consigned to where it belongs - the rubbish bin. Then we will be able to get on with the job in hand......watching and enjoying the football!

Seven is heaven for Mil Palmeras

C.F Mil Palmeras had their most successful season yet in this year’s Vega Baja league - grabbing no fewer than SEVEN trophies in five different age groups. The club continues to go from strength to strength

and all the hard work and effort from the players aged six to 15 came to fruition with this outstanding trophy haul. On finals day in Rojales last Saturday, no team picked up with more silverware than Mil Palmeras. Coach Martin Naylor said:" The players deserve everything they have got this season through sheer hard work and determination." C.F Mil Palmeras is running a summer soccer camp right through July and August, with children from the ages of six to 15 welcome to take part. EUR WE GO!

Do Roy’s boys have the guts to top the class? IT'S all about to kick-off today - but don't go rushing to put your money on England to win the 2012 European Championships. Some people in the old country seem more interested in racist and other issues than winning a major football tournament. That is just one thing holding Roy Hodgson back - the others are France, Spain and Italy. England MUST beat France in their opening game to have any chance of progressing. Sadly if they do progress they come up against either Spain or Italy in the quarter-finals. Nothing like doing it the hard way and it'll all be very character-building that's for sure. That's one commodity England teams of recent times have lacked - character and guts. They have added a little more technical

STEVE BOTT reports

ability to their undoubted skills. Now it's time to take the next step and show the character, guts, grit and determination to overcome any adversity and battle through against all the odds. Granted, there is no substitute for skill allied to experience and whichever team produces most of that will win the tournament. Spain are everyone's favourites. They have undoubted skill and are the current World and European champions so there's a wee bit of experience, too. Also, Fernando Torres appears to be back to something like his best at just the right time for them. France, having gone 21 games unbeaten, have got to be taken seriously again. It's time to forget their aberrations in the World Cup in 2010. It would appear they have recovered from all that and don't forget, before Spain, they were also back-to-back European and World winners. Italy's players will have too much on their minds, i.e. jail terms, huge fines and Mafia paybacks, to concen-

trate fully on the football so I don't see them as a threat. Then there are, as always, the Germans. But if Chelsea can do it why can't England or anyone else? See off Germany, that is! They even beat 'em on penalties too......something England have spectacularly failed to achieve at international level. So, dark horses. I don't see any and go for the Dutch to finally do what they have threatened to do in recent tournaments....actually win one. They have more than enough talent to do so with Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart in their ranks. They should be a joy to watch and they will be the team I will be cheering should England fall by the wayside. I just hope it all goes off without too much trouble and I don't mean just off the pitch. No tantrums please, boys, no histrionics, handbags at dawn, diving, cheating and abusing opponents and officials. Just get on with it and do what you do best - play beautiful, flowing, exciting football laden with loads of goals!
