Our latest edition is always online at www.thecourier.es A CRAZED Al-Qaeda plot to kill dozens of British holidaymakers and military personnel as they watched the London Olympics has been smashed by British intelligence.
ROCK OF HORROR
It is believed that terrorists were planning to crash a light aircraft packed with explosives into families watching the Olympics in Gibraltar on an outdoor screen and in bars. According to the Daily Mirror, they apparently wanted to follow up the ruthless attack with a Mumbai-style machinegun rampage on foot. Two Chechen Russians and a Turkish man were swooped on and quizzed by a Spanish judge this week over the allegations. The Al-Qaeda cell’s horrific plans were thwarted after British spies teamed up with their counterparts in Madrid. A source told the Mirror: “The significance of these arrests is enormous because these men had to be taken out of circulation. “Unfortunately the authorities have learned there are probably more gunmen at large as the plan is thought to have involved a follow-up gun attack on foot. "Thankfully, because of the mutually beneficial liaison between British intelligence and their Spanish counterparts, it seems a plan to kill many Brits has been stopped.” The Mirror said hardcore al-Qaeda operatives are thought to have started pulling together a squad of fanatics late last year after deciding the London Games would be too well guarded. I’M NOT SPANISH!
CATALAN hockey player Àlex Fàbregas has received death threats after saying he is only representing Spain in the Olympics because he has “no other choice”. Fàbregas – one of the key players in the Spanish team – made it clear in an interview with Catalan newspaper Ara that he considers himself Catalan and not Spanish. “I play in the Spanish team because there’s no other team I can play with, I have no other choice. I feel Catalan. “I do not feel the same way listening to the Spanish anthem as I do listening to Els Segadors.” He added: “I enjoy playing in the team for myself, for my peers and for the people who come to see me. But at no

SPANISH and Italian researchers have discovered an unlikely weapon in the fight against skin cancer – the strawberry. The popular summer fruit can fend off harmful UVA rays and shield

Costa dream as vivid as ever DESPITE the eurozone crisis and beleaguered economy, Spain is still the place where most Brits would like to retire. The dream of a home on the Costas is as strong as ever according to a recent poll by
retirement income specialists MGM Advantage. France was the second most popular destination, with Cyprus and Australia also making the top five. Pensions Technical Director at
MGM Advantage, Andrew Tulley said: “Retiring abroad is a dream for many people. “The thought of an easier pace of living, better weather and potentially cheaper property than the UK can prove a strong draw.”

Robin Hood mayor leads trolley push for the poor
By AMANDA BLACK AN Andalucian mayor has turned Robin Hood by stealing from a ‘rich’ supermarket to feed the poor. Juan Manuel Sánchez Gordillo and his supporters filled trolleys full of food at a Seville supermarket on Tuesday and walked out without paying. The goods were for a charity that distributes food to the poorest people in Andalucia. Gordillo, who is mayor of Marinaleda, Seville, and a delegate of the left-wing IU political party, later justified his actions by saying: “I stole to give to the poor. The rich are already helping themselves.” He added: “This crisis is a big robbery. We have taken [food] because we believe people have to eat every day.” Two supermarkets were targeted in the action by the Andalucian Union of Workers, in which Gordillo is a leading figure. The leader of IU, Gaspar Llamazares, later supported Gordillo’s Robin Hood stance claiming that there was room within the law to take such measures in “dramatic situations”. He stopped short of saying he would do the same himself but maintained the

Gordillo’s actions and Llamazares’ support were quickly condemned by the government. The Minister of the Interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz insisted those responsible would face arrest. “We all
€1.20 sunglasses turn suffering Laura into a sight for sore eyes BRITISH schoolgirl Laura Musson has been left with a badly swollen face after a terrifying reaction to a €1.20 pair of sunglasses. Doctors told her she had suffered severe allergic reactions and confirmed that plastic in the sunglasses she had bought in a High Street shop, was the most likely cause. Now she wants to

Gordillo, however, remains defiant. He insisted on Twitter that he would do it again, adding that he would “take from landowners, thieving banks and big supermarkets to deliver food”. He slammed Díaz as being “a Francoist through and through” for ordering the arrests of those involved but said he would be “proud to go to prison” for his actions. “A delegate cannot give his blessing to cuts that leave people hungry. The debt should be paid by those who created it,” he said. He added that stealing the food was justified because Andalucia has the highest unemployment rate in Europe, with three million living in poverty. l.

CRISIS-HIT Spanish schools are to start charging children for bringing their own packed lunch. The levy of up to €3 a day will be introduced when the new term starts next month. The fee is a double whammy for many struggling families who turned to packed lunches after their children lost grants for free school meals with the slashing of education budgets. Jesus Maria Sanchez, the president of the Spanish Confederation of Associations of Parents, said: “The measure is barbaric. It means that those parents trying to save a bit of money by cutting out school meals will actually notice very little difference at all.”

A WARNING FROM THE BRITISH EMBASSY
Thinking of renting out your property?
HOMEOWNERS who rent out their properties to holidaymakers are being warned they could face huge fines unless they comply with Spanish law. The British Embassy has become aware of a number of cases where homeowners have been fined up to €30,000 for letting properties without the correct permits. The Embassy this week published advice for homeowners who rent out their properties or are considering doing so, which can be found on the UKinSpain website. Short-term lets:The regulations on letting tourist apartments (apartamentos turísticos) and holiday homes (viviendas vacacionales) vary by region. If you are planning on making a financial return by renting out your existing property, or buying one to let, you are recommended to seek independent legal advice and check the local licensing laws with your local town hall (Ayuntamiento). This is particularly important in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands where the rental of holiday properties on a short-term basis is strictly regulated. The authorities in these areas are cracking down on homeowners who rent out their properties to tourists (particularly through online adverts) without complying with Spanish law. If you own or are planning to buy an apartment which is part of a Comunidad de Propietarios (Committees of property owners who are responsible for the management of communal areas of apartment buildings/complexes), you should also check
whether there are any rules that prohibit or restrict short-term letting. Long-term lets: Owners who rent out properties on a long-term basis are generally not required to apply for a special licence. However, it is worth seeking professional advice to make sure that you are complying with Spanish legislation and that you are using the correct rental contract. There are different types of contracts depending on how long the property is being let for, such as arriendos de vivienda which are for a minimum of five years, and arriendos de temporada which are generally for one year or less. You can get copies of these contracts from tobacconists (estancos). Taxes: Owners of properties should also be aware that whether or not you are resident in Spain, you will need to declare rental income to the Spanish tax authorities. Homeowners may wish to seek advice from a professional tax adviser (asesor/gestor). Managing a property rental: You may want to consider hiring a Spanish letting agent to assist with finding tenants, drawing up rental contracts and managing the property on your behalf. Further information: Advice on renting out property in Spain on the UKinSpain website FAQs on letting property in Spain (in Spanish) from the Sociedad Pública de Alquiler (Public Rental Society) Lists of local English-speaking lawyers can be found on the consular pages of the UKinSpain website.
AMY’S EX-HUBBY ‘MAY NEVER WAKE UP’ AFTER DRINK AND DRUGS BINGE AMY WINEHOUSE'S former husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, is in a life-threatening condition in hospital after being found unconscious. Fielder-Civil, 30, is on a life support machine after collapsing following an apparent drink and drug binge, according to his girlfriend. He was found choking in bed by his partner Sarah Aspin last Friday, and was taken to hospital with multiple organ failure. The recovering drug addict had gone out drinking with a friend the previous day, and Ms Aspin, who is mother to his 15-month-old son, said she believed he might have taken an illicit substance. Fielder-Civil was put into an induced coma and is fighting for his life in hospital in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Ms Aspin, 34, who met Winehouse's former husband in rehab three years ago, said: "The doctors said they put him in a coma to help him and due to infection. "I'm praying he'll survive,
but I'm having to prepare myself that he may never wake up." She said Fielder-Civil attended an appointment with the Probation Service in Morley and then met a friend the day before he was rushed to hospital. He had returned home slurring his words and staggering before being put to bed. Ms Aspin found him unconscious when she woke the next morning, and paramedics confirmed he had choked on his vomit. Mitch Winehouse urged his daughter's fans to pray for her ex-husband, saying it was "terrible news". Writing on Twitter, he said: "Remember Amy loved him. Let's pray for his recovery."

editor@thecourier.es COURIER POSTBAG: YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS
EVERY WITCH WAY It’s time Britain put its own people first Steve the ridiculous has really landed on his Bott!
YOUR front page headline last week, ‘‘CHEATWAVE - Shop a benefits Fraudster and help Britain to beat the crisis’’ brought a wry smile to my face as the subject is very close to my current situation. But if the Witch-Finder General, namely DWP head Mr Iain Duncan Smith, is so concerned about beating the crisis in Britain, may I suggest he starts with deploying his troops on his own doorstep. Or does he want to give his staff jollies in the Spanish sunshine at the British taxpayer’s expense? Britain is the land of milk and honey to anyone and everyone who enters the country, be they illegal immigrants, asylum seekers or whatever. This is why they are queuing up on the other side of the channel (Calais) awaiting their opportunity to enter the country. Once they get in, they know that they will not be deported but will be given every assistance in finding a home. And with benefits being handed out to them by the DWP right left and centre without checks (in most cases) ever being made, I wonder if the person who doled out these benefits still has a job? I give you two examples of where Mr IDS should start with his savings:1) Approximately 130,000 children who live in Poland get child benefit from the British DWP because their Father or Mother lives and work in Britain. And when these people go back to Poland, their Government has set up offices to show them how to claim unemployment benefit from the UK for up to six months following their return. I was born in Britain and worked there for over 47 years, paid my National Insurance and Income Tax for all those years - but as I was honest and informed the DWP that I now live in Spain, I cannot export my Disability Living Allowance (could
THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED ON THIS PAGE ARE THOSE OF THE WRITERS, NOT THE COURIER this be discrimination?). 2) Over 1,400 families living in Britain get more than £30,000 a year in Housing benefits - and 100 of these receive over £50,000 in rent paid for by taxpayers. The annual housing benefit bill is a colossal £21 billion. I am fully aware of a number of people living and working in Spain and claiming Benefits from the UK - some legally, some illegally. But under the current British system I would not shop them. The majority worked and paid into the system when they lived in the UK - unlike a lot of immigrants there. They make up their meagre State Pension paid by the British Government, one of the lowest in Europe. With regards to Mr Bunce, the fraudster referred to in the article, I do not condone his actions and he deserves everything

JUST GREAT, BRITAIN A WEEK ago, she looked as enthusiastic about the Olympic Games as I am about people with no sense of humour. But I bet The Queen is grinning from ear to ear now that Britannia rules the waves again. Along with the cycle track, the showjumping arena and much of the athletics stadium. Isn’t it great to know that Yorkshire has more gold medals than the whole of Australia? All those shy, retiring folk Down Under must be finding it so hard to take (or should that be Tyke?) I switched over to Spanish TV around lunchtime on Tuesday to see the studio going berserk about the nation’s FIRST gold medal of the Games. Eat your hearts out, amigos – you might catch up with Laura Trott and Chris Hoy by 2100! They say

ONNA, The only thing I and those I have spoken to wonder at, is how someone can criticise the Queen, "caught on camera" not smiling, who at 86 was attending an event that was to last until after midnight. I am sure the Queen works harder and meets/smiles at more people in one week than you do in a month. If that is the best you can write about, no wonder you only edit a free paper in Spain. Even worse was Steve Bott who, after the weekend’s achievements by dedicated sports people should feel an idiot. Thousands of people cheered them on and enjoyed seeing them achieve their dreams, after years of hard work, not only were the stands packed but London Theatres and Restaurants had a record weekend. Perhaps he should give up the Cola bottles as they are obviously turning him sour. MAUREEN HUMAN

Fortunately, most readers took the article for what it was - a tongue-in-cheek send-up of the Opening Ceremony. Fortunately it gave most readers good giggle, rather than prompting them to hurl personal insults at me. I hope you feel better for it. I’ve not asked Steve Bott for a comment. We don’t call him The Courier’s Loose Cannon for nothing.
AVING just read your ‘Liz Mis' article, I do not expect you to get this email unless it is redirected to the Tower of London. Good thing for you that the Tyburn gallows is now no longer in use! On a much more serious note, I would like through your column to express my appreciation of the treatment I have been having from Dr Machi Mannu. He is a most charming man indeed and answers every question in simple language. I had quite simply given up on the NHS treatment I had been receiving in England. This revolutionary treatment of his seems like science fiction at first but whatever it is, it certainly got me sorted out! Each day is better than the one before. My next appointment is not until the end of October. NEIL METCALF (neil146@gmail.com)

anything good to say about the nation’s bureaucrats. But the 1997 decision to invest an annual £100 million in UK the National Sport from Lottery and the Exchequer has proved a miracle elixir. The year before UK Sport
was formed, Britain won just ONE gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics. The four previous Games from 1980 to 1992, each brought a haul of five golds - and anonymity on the world stage. In other words, we were also rans, also rides and all so useless. Fast forward to 2008 and 19 golds among 47 medalsl rocketed us to fourth in the final Medals Table. Only the vast empires of China, USA and Russia topped our tally. We’ve already beaten that figure in the current Olympics – with more medals to come. Amazingly, Team GB hit gold in seven of the nine categories in the Velodrome. .And we got a silver and a bronze in the other two. No wonder my grandkids want to take up the sport. So too, do hundreds of thou-
sands of lazy, overweight youngsters who have suddenly found the ultimate in inspiration. Take my word for it. The power of our Olympic success will spark Britain’s economy back to life. Finally, I’ve got to say a few words about the BBC’s excruciating ploy of dragging losers in front of the cameras. Most of the poor souls clearly do not want to be interviewed. and watching them squirm is acutely embarrassing to everyone involved. In the good old days, journalists would never intrude on private grief. The last thing you want when you’re in mourning is to have a microphone jammed under you nose. So stick it, Beeb and we don’t care where.

A BIT OF A TWO-DO! THE first time I met the future Mrs S I realised it wasn't the first time we'd met. We were introduced at a party and I said to her: 'I remember you from primary school. You were the little girl with pigtails who bossed the boys about.' 'That's funny,' she responded. 'I have no recollection of you whatsoever.' As my self-esteem plunged and my childhood charisma lay in tatters, I decided I wanted nothing more to do with that woman. We married soon afterwards. Fast-forward some 12 months after the wedding ceremony and Mrs S and I are preparing for a special night out. 'Why are you just standing there, clad only in your underpants?' she enquired. 'I was thinking,' I replied. 'I wouldn't do that,' countered Mrs S. 'You'll get a headache. But let me ask you again. Why are you standing there wearing only your Y-fronts . . . in the back garden?' 'Oh, that,' I said. 'I was about to put down some slug pellets. But I was also wondering what to wear tonight. Do I dress up, dress down, have a shave, grow a beard?' Mrs S snapped her fingers in front of my eyes to jolt me back into reality. HER reality, I might add, because I was quite happy where I was, watching pixies frolicking under fluffy white clouds as pretty butterflies fluttered by. 'Get inside the house before the neighbours gather,' growled Mrs S. 'You look like one of those Chippendale blokes visiting the hall of mirrors.' I started stamping around the lawn in frustration. 'Tonight's very important to me,' I declared. 'I want to impress our hosts.' Mrs S ran into the house and brought out a blanket to throw over me. 'And I wouldn't stamp on that spot if I were you,' she cautioned. 'The dog's just been out.' I stumbled back indoors and collapsed onto the sofa. 'I'm still not sure what tonight's all about,' I confessed. 'I mean we've been married for nearly a year now so how come it's only tonight that I'm meeting your parents for the first time?' 'Well, it's like this,' Mrs S hummed and harred. 'I didn't want to spring a shock on them before the wedding, did I? They might not have warmed immediately to your . . . er . . . unique personality and tried to talk me out of getting hitched to you.' 'You mean they don't even know we're married!' I gasped.
'Er, yes. My parents aren't actually aware of your existence. But tonight we can present them with a fait accompli.' 'I thought we were bringing them flowers,' I said, puzzled. 'Anyway, you're chipping away at my self-esteem again and it's upsetting me.' 'Darling,' cooed Mrs S, tickling me under the chin. 'You're still the most adorable man I know. Now hop upstairs, wash your foot and put on your smart denim shirt and sexy slacks. You'll respectively knock my dad's and mum's socks and stockings off.' C h e s t swelling with newly-found pride, I left the room but could have sworn I heard Mrs S mutter: 'It never fails.' An hour later we were trudging up the path to the house of my as yet unenlightened in-laws. Mrs S rang the doorbell. 'Remember,' she advised. 'Just keep smiling and let me do all the talking, David . . . David?' Mrs S ran back to our car and prised my hands off the steering wheel. 'Come on, darling. Don't concentrate on your many character flaws and do make an effort to be positive.' 'My anxiety disorder is the last thing I need to get the jitters about,' I insisted. I had barely crossed the threshold when my unaware father-in-law whisked me off to the local pub. 'What's your tipple? he asked. 'I don't drink,' I replied, trying to create a good impression
and hoping that my nose had not grown. My oblivious father-in-law downed half of his pint while I sipped my orange juice. 'I assume, young man, that you're wanting to ask for my daughter's hand.' 'Well, Mr . . . er . . .' 'Call me Dave,' he said. 'Tell me, is your family comfortable?' 'I don't know, Dave,' I said. 'I've never sat on them.' 'I like you,' chortled Dave. 'I can see already that you have my sense of humour.' 'I already have your daughter, too,' I mumbled into my orange juice. 'And that's definitely not funny.' We two Daves walked back to the house and en route he turned to me and said: 'I've decided I shall be happy to accept you as my son-in-law. Now come and meet the missus and our son, Dave Jnr.' As we drove home later, Mrs S said: 'Mum's overjoyed that we're married. But on the other hand she's only just met you. So what was my dad's reaction when you told him?' Silence. 'You've not told him, have you?' she gasped. 'What do we do now?' 'I've worked it all out,' I assured her. 'You send your mum an invite to our first anniversary party but I'll post your dad a wedding invitation. We'll just have to make sure both functions are at the same place on the same day and at the same time.' 'You're crazy!' Mrs S observed. 'And if that charade doesn't work?' 'Well,' I shrugged. 'We either get divorced or just call off the wedding.'
World On Alert For Millionairess Murder: Massive Solar Storm Man Re-arrested
EXPERTS say the sun is reaching a peak in its 10-year activity cycle, putting the Earth at greater risk from solar storms. Power grids, communications and satellites could be knocked out by a massive solar storm in the next two years, scientists warn. Experts say the sun is reaching a peak in its 10-year activity cycle, putting the Earth at greater risk from solar storms. Mike Hapgood, a space weather specialist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Didcot, Oxfordshire, said: "Governments are taking it very seriously. These things may be very rare but when they happen, the consequences can be catastrophic." He warned that solar storms are increasingly being put on national risk registers used for disaster planning, alongside other events like tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. There is 12% chance of a major solar storm every decade - making them a roughly one-in-100-year event. The last major storm was more than 150 years ago. The threat comes from magneticallycharged plasma thrown out by the sun in
coronal mass ejections. Like vast bubbles bursting off the sun's surface, they send millions of tons of gas racing through space that can engulf the Earth with as little as one day's warning. They trigger geomagnetic storms which can literally melt expensive transformers in national power grids. Satellites can be damaged or destroyed and radio communications - including with jet airliners - could be knocked out. Teams of scientists in North America and Europe monitor the sun and issue warnings to governments, power companies and airline operators. In 1989, a solar storm was blamed for taking out the entire power network in Quebec, Canada, which left millions without electricity for nine hours. The largest was known as the Carrington event in 1859, when British astronomer Richard Carrington observed a large solar eruption that took just 17 hours to reach the Earth's atmosphere. It caused the aurora borealis - or Northern Lights - to be seen as far south as the Caribbean.
POLICE investigating the disappearance of Carole Waugh have re-arrested Rakesh Bhayani on suspicion of murder. Unemployed Bhayani, 40, is being interviewed at a south London police station. He also faces three charges of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation worth around ÂŁ280,000, linked to use of Ms Waugh's identity. Bhayani, from Wembley, previously appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates' Court on July 24 and was remanded in custody to appear again at Southwark Crown Court on September 25. Police found Ms Waugh's badlydecomposed body in a car at a lock-up garage in New Malden on August 2. It is thought she died from a single stab wound. The 50-year-old oil executive, who was originally from Durham, was reported missing on May 7 and had not been seen by her family since mid-April. Nicholas Kutner, 47, is being held in custody on fraud charges after being arrested on suspicion of murder and kid-
nap on August 1. He is accused of pretending to be Chris Waugh, Ms Waugh's brother, in an attempt to sell her London home. He also faces two charges relating to renting her property at Tressard Court and a fourth of unlawfully withdrawing funds from Ms Waugh's bank account. Ms Waugh had lived and worked in Libya for a number of years, but returned to London in 2008 and would regularly visit relatives in Durham and Cumbria. Her former boss, Stuart Anderson, told journalists she had fled Libya after being threatened by someone in Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime, but a Metropolitan Police spokesman said the enquiries were focused in London. Detectives said she met men through a variety of internet sites, including dating websites, and they were investigating the possibility that she might have been an escort. So far, a total of 10 people have been arrested in connection with the inquiry into Miss Waugh's disappearance.

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH LESSON 32 ¡HOLA! I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and if you’re heading away for holidays, remember that The Courier is available online at www.thecourier.es There is no reason why you cannot continue your lessons and keep up to date. I have had a great week, met up with an old friend I haven´t seen for over six years, in fact when I last saw him I knew hardly a word of Spanish. It was quite a surprise to him that I´m now teaching and translating, although he still wants to speak English to me as he says I am his only English friend and the only person he can practise with. I hope you are doing the same, finding Spanish friends to speak with and learn from. Hopefully by now you will have built quite a vocabulary and be able to hold basic conversations. If you don´t feel at that level just yet, don’t worry, we´ve only been together seven months learning this. It’s taken me over four years to get to the level I’m at, so keep going and the more you practise, the quicker you´ll learn. So, carrying on from last week, here are the answers: I sleep in the bedroom – Yo duermo en el dormitorio; Sometimes I find money in the sofa – A veces encuentro dinero en el sofa; Gold costs more than silver – El oro cuesta más que la plata; You eat lunch – Tú almuerzas; They count the money – Ellos cuentan el dinero; She sleeps – Ella duerme; The book costs ten euros – El libro cuesta diez euros; You return the shirt — Tú devuelves la camisa; The telephone rings – El teléfono suena; Dumbo flies – Dumbo vuela ; We solve the problems – Nosotros resolvemos los problemas; I return to the office at five o´clock – Yo vuelvo al la oficina a las cinco. How did you get on? I hope you are getting to grips with these stem changes as we are about to learn some more.
We are moving on the E changes to IE: So the stem changes from E to IE in all forms except the nosotros and vosotros forms, exactly the same as last week’s rules:
Here are some stem-changing E to IE verbs; you will note that some have both O and E in the stem. Remember that it is always the vowel prior to the last syllable that changes e.g. comenzar, confesar, consenter. Acertar - to guess/get right, advertir – to advise/warn, comenzar – to begin, confesar – to confess, consentir – to consent, convertir – to convert, defender – to defend,
empezar – to begin, encender – to light/kindle, entender – to understand, fregar – to scrub/wash dishes, mentir – to lie/tell a lie, negar – to deny, pensar (en) – to think (about), preferir – to prefer, querer – to want/wish/love, referir – to refer, sentir – to feel (sorry, regret), sugerir – to suggest, temblar – to tremble, tropezar (con) – to stumble/bump into. Here are some examples, then there will be some sentences for you to translate: e.g I understand Spanish – Entiendo español, You guess – Tú aciertas, You boil the water – Hierves el agua, He wants a dog – Él quiere un perro, I think about the war – Pienso en la guerra. Now here are some phrases for you to translate: The program begins, he loses the magazine, I prefer water, we convert the money to euros, I close the door, I close the windows when it is cold, I don´t understand, the film begins at eight o´clock, he regrets it a lot, they deny everything. Good luck and see you next week.

Beyond the male WOMEN ARE WAY AHEAD IN UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DOGS
FLASHBACK: Young Peter with the main influences in his life - his mother and his sister
I HAVE just finished my latest dog psychology course for clients in London and the question came up regarding who makes the better dog owners in general, men or women? The answer, without question, is women. Why? Because they are open to learning and, most importantly, open to change. They also tend to have a calmer, more relaxed energy than men. When I go to a client’s home for a consultation, in many cases the man of the house is just not interested. I find this arrogant attitude sad and sometimes frustrating, because everyone in the household has to be doing the same things in order for the dog to change. I have many clients where the woman of the house is doing superb work in order to get her dog behaving well. They often complain to me that their husbands for some reason want nothing to do with it. You may find this statistic difficult to believe but in the six years I have been working with dogs on a behaviourist level, I have only ever had two male clients! That fact I think explains all you need to know. Men rarely admit they need help, but thankfully women are a lot wiser and realise they do need assistance at times. I believe I was extremely privileged in the fact that I was raised solely by women. My Mum and my sister were my only influences when I was young - and that taught me a huge amount, all of which was positive. Looking back, I suppose you would have called that my socialisation period, which is a very important subject when it comes to puppies, as what-
ever they see and do during this period influences the rest of their lives. With me that has certainly been true. Put me in a room full of men and I will be looking to escape as soon as possible. On the other hand, if I am in a room full of women I feel totally comfortable - not in the way most men would, but because I relate to their energy a lot more. Not all men throw up a brick wall when it comes to learning about dog behaviour, though. There are some out there who really do want to learn and do the best by their dogs, but in my experience they are few and far between. Two male clients in six years proves that, compared with hundreds of women clients. One of the women’s main complaints is that their husbands show no patience. They want everything to be prefect straight away and if it isn’t they give up immediately and walk
off in a strop. You need patience and understanding in order for your dog to become your best friend - and in my experience women have those two qualities in abundance. I always talk to my clients about how important their energy is and this is something we all have to work on, including me - and I do, twice each day. This is another stumbling block for men. When I explain that in order to have a calm energy, they must practise and nurture calm each day in some form, whether it be meditation or simply switching the mind off for a while in a quiet room, they simply do not want to know. I really wish they did, because in doing so my life has turned around greatly and my dogs are well aware that I am really calm, not just putting on a good act. Dogs are our mirrors and until men wake up to change a dog will always prefer the energy of females. Just as I did as a kid and still do.

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON THE NEW FRENCH LEGISLATION ON DRINK DRIVING From July 1st, all French drivers driving on roads in France must carry a breathalyser kit in their cars. The measure, announced by the previous government, was due to take effect four months ago, but the rush to buy the kits has led to supplies being sold out, which has led to a moratorium on the introduction of the devices. According to the French authorities, the regulation, the first of its kind to be introduced in the European Union, will also affect foreign drivers who drive in France, although they will not be required to have the device installed in their vehicles until November. In addition, breathalysers will also be obligatory in all discotheques and bars which have a licence to open at night. By implementing this law, the French government hopes to save 500 lives a year, due to the presence of alcohol being detected in almost a third of all fatal accidents occurring in France. In addition to this regulation, the French authorities have approved a packet of measures aimed at reducing the accident rate on roads, which include: • An increase on the road network in the number of fixed speed cameras to 2,500, which will not be signposted. • The introduction of new generation mobile speed cameras, which allow a travelling police car to measure speed. • All motorists must carry a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle.

Original girl power ON August 5, 1962, an icon died. There have been a few true icons in the past 100 years, James Dean, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra…but this icon is different. She is a female - and is still being idolised to this day. A woman who touched as many hearts as the men. But would she be as popular had she lived today? Would her appeal have been so far reaching? I am referring to Marilyn Monroe and this year marks half a century since, at the age of 36, she was found lifeless and naked on her bed, telephone off the hook and all alone. Marilyn was a figurehead for a generation. She was gorgeous, blonde, sexy. Her acting was controlled and her comedy timing was high quality - but she also possessed that X factor which made her an international star. A star that lives on and is still making money so long after her passing. Monroe also appears to have been insecure and spent her life looking for love. Although she was married three times, all ended in divorce and she bore no children. However, there were stories of several abortions and miscarriages.
So, what would Norma Jeane Mortenson be doing had she been born in this era? There is no doubting her appeal as a woman but is that enough in these days of flawlessness. After all, Marilyn was no size zero, she was fantastically curvy. And to be fair, she was not a great actress. How would she fare in today´s world of tiny bodies and media scrutiny? That is one thing we can only surmise because Marilyn wasn´t of this day and age. She was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles and after posing for some now famous nude photos managed to break into Hollywood and became the symbolic figure we know today. Marilyn´s curves were part of her appeal, as was her blonde hair and famous red lip-
stick. She was naturally beautiful and oozed an irresistible charisma and that is just watching her on the big screen. It is hard to imagine how anyone felt in her company. Of course Marilyn wasn´t Hollywood’s first golden girl. There had been Jane Russell, Jayne Mansfield and Jean Harlow, to name but three, but it is Marilyn´s image that graces millions of is It souvenirs. Marilyn who is talked about today as much as 50 years ago. Mention the name Marilyn and automatically people think of Monroe. She is loved and admired as much by women as by men - and her appeal will outlive anyone around these days. Of that I have no doubt. For me, Marilyn Monroe remains an icon. She had the original girl power, she led
where now others follow, and she proved that to be beautiful comes from inside as well as out. She also proved that there is no need to be the size of a pencil to be sexy, and that looks alone won´t make you successful - but there is no harm in emphasising your best physical attributes. She had problems and insecurities and unfortunately these may have been her downfall as she relied on more and more prescription drugs to get her through the day. These drugs apparently are what caused her, on that fateful night, to pass into immortality. It is a shame she had no one to protect her; the vulnerable young woman who clung to people became lost in Hollywood and ultimately paid the price. She is quoted as saying ´Hollywood is a place where they pay you 1,000 dollars for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul´ But her legacy lives on. To me the overriding lesson Marilyn leaves us with is that you are beautiful; make the most of what you have but don´t lose yourself in the process. Learn from Marilyn´s mistakes and embrace her beauty and empowerment. Marilyn looked stunning but also had a heart and a passion. Would she have been such a star today? I am sure she would.

TEAM GB AND THE HUNT FOR POLITICAL GOLD
THE success of Team GB has brought the usual political piggy-back riding, as everybody tries to benefit from the success of London 2012. Take Boris Johnson, London’s Mayor, who met Rupert Murdoch with rumours that the Old Digger might even endorse him in one of his rags as a future Tory leader. Funny how phone tapping has been forgotten! We even had the sight of the Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, shaking Murdoch’s hand, with both men grinning away like a couple of naughty schoolboys who have put a whoopee cushion under the headmaster’s chair. In another PR boob, Hunt has learnt nothing from his problems of the last year, unless he thinks he’s got nothing to lose, with David Cameron set to dump him in this autumn’s cabinet reshuffle. There’s never been a poorer holder of the Culture position since the post was created by John Major as a favour for his old mate David Mellor. Mellor being the guy who gave us all a good laugh by having an extra-marital affair exposed in the tabloids - thus giving hope for all men who have a face uglier than a horse’s backside. The phenomenal Team GB medal haul has little to do with successive governments over the last 30 years, which have seen
school sports slashed to a record low. At least Jeremy Hunt has been honest in saying there isn’t enough sport in the primary school sector, but you start to laugh when he says the Prime Minister wants to “seize the opportunity given by the Games”. I’ll believe it when I see it, but the double standards in this whole discussion were kicked off by British Olympic Association chairman, Lord Colin Moynihan, with his call for more school sports. The former Olympic rower seems to have forgotten that he was a Tory MP in the 80s, when he became Margaret Thatcher’s Minister of Sport, and did absolutely nothing to halt the decline of school sports. In fact, Moynihan always came over as the one of the most pompous holders of that job, and not a patch on former football referee Denis Howell, who held the post in the 70s. Moynihan’s only political legacy was an ill-fated attempt to introduce ID cards for all football supporters, and to everybody’s relief, he lost his seat in the 1992 election. The fact that he beat Olympic hero David Hemery to the BOA post in 2005 proved he must have had friends in high places, but not necessarily the qualities needed for the job. How many times has that happened before? Reform of the chamber of the

unelected sleepers, better known as the House of Lords, seems to be as dead as the pan-fried duck I ate during the week. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg admitted that the coalition deal over the Lords is in tatters, so he’s told Cameron to stick any constituency boundary changes that would have given the Tories another 20 seats at the next election. A bit of “Ya…Boo…Sucks” tit-for-tat stuff that he promised never to do! He’s also rounded on Labour for “supporting the ends, but obstructing the means” over the Lords. If life is getting so tough for the Nick/Dave marriage that was consecrated with such tender sweetness in the Downing Street rose garden over 27 months ago, then why doesn’t Nick just pull the plug and see what the voters think? Or is that a bit of principle that’s too hard to swallow, countered by the loss of some nice ministerial salaries for the Lib Dems, along with half of their Commons seats? TV producers must be tearing their hair out with the news that the Tory MP Louise Mensch is quitting her marginal Corby seat to go with her family to America, where her husband is working as manager of the rock band, Metallica. The entertaining Mensch was a natural for shows like Have I Got News for You, with a lot of fun and good common sense. Making her name as a best-selling romantic writer, she was in touch with reality and with younger people. Her legacy now for the Prime Minister is a demoralising byelection slaughter, coupled with the usual verbal rubbish over how mid-term election results mean nothing. Exactly contrary to what Mr Cameron would have said in opposition four years ago!

ONE of the saddest stories I have read for a long time concerned Shafilea, the 17-year-old girl who was murdered by her Pakistani parents because they were ashamed of her - believing she had become too Westernised. What that girl must have gone through is beyond belief. Children look to their parents for care, support, love and trust - this girl was failed on every possible level. Her parents wanted her to marry someone in Pakistan they had "arranged" for her, but who she had never seen. Instead, like any teenager, she rebelled - and it cost her her life. Ironically, the father was a total hypocrite, because his previous marriage was to a white woman from Denmark. He was born to a strict Muslim family, but shunned that life and embraced his new-found Western one, dating women outside his religion and race. But when it came to his daughter it was a totally different matter. We've heard the saying "don't do as I do, do as I say". Here's the extreme example of it. Sadly, there were many other young girls living in Britain from Asian backgrounds who have become Westernised and want to embrace Western values, but come into conflict with their parents. It's sad that these people, wanting so much to go to the West because of the economic advantages they can see here, do not first evaluate other things which are

WHEN EAST MEETS WEST involved in the move to another Tragic Shafilea country. We, as expats, and her have to come to parents terms with the differences, not only in language, but also in cultures, when we embrace a new life in Spain, but this is little compared with the differences between life in the Indian sub-continent and the UK. One of our friends owns a restaurant in Britain, having left subsequently became a virBangladesh in his youth and tual slave to the other family. It culminated in her teleworked his way up the ladder of life the hard way, via phoning her father and pleading with him to rescue the cotton mills up north. story is that the second daughter met someone new and is now happily married. Eastern culture is a different world from what we expect in the West, and it's obviously hard for them to make the huge adjustment. That's why they tend to stay together in their closed communities. And because of these closed communities such dreadful abuses can, and still do happen. OUR fantastic success at the Olympics has been due in part to the additional funding from the

Lottery; and the Olympics on home territory, with so much crowd support spurred on by national pride, giving our Olympians that winning edge. T h e s e Olympians have been competing for the pride of Britain and their reward, apart from the medal, is their picture on a postage stamp. Compare that with our pain in the neck, grossly overpaid, philandering footballers who don't deserve all the misplaced hero worship they get; and compare Olympians with feckless young mothers, one night stand absentee fathers, teenagers whose life revolves around getting drunk every week and the dregs who commit one crime after another regardless of how many times they are jailed. Last week we watched athletes complete 100 metres in less than 10 seconds, but a survey showed
BRYAN MIGHTY! BRYAN’S Blinds was started in early 2008 when the owners decided to make their home in Spain. The business has been built on past work experience in the UK. Since February 2008 they have built a good reputation and many new clients come on recommendation of past clients. The initial idea was to offer services to the people living around the Mar Menor and further down the Costa Calida. This has now expanded to cover Orihuela Costa. We travel all around the area - in fact, anywhere within a one-hour drive of San Javier. Since living in Spain they have discovered the true advantage of fitting interior window blinds. They allow you to enjoy the sunlight in the room whilst keeping the room cool, with
the added advantage with vertical blinds that allow you to direct the light in your room - meaning that you can watch TV at any time of the day without those annoying reflections. Blinds can also provide privacy and of course can help dress a room as there are some stunning fabrics to choose from - in fact over 300 different colours and patterns! Also, the business has grown and can now offer fly screens for door and windows to keep flies, mosis, cockroaches and other flying things out of the house. Plus, working with a Spanish firm they can supply and fit awnings in a variety of styles for both overhead protection from the sun and side awnings for protection from the sun and to provide privacy. Plus, curtains and vertical rollers to provide protection from the sun and wind and also provide privacy.
that only 56 per cent of Brits could run 100 metres without stopping. How appalling is that? No wonder that people are dying of heart attacks and suffer from all manner of ailments caused by lack of exercise. I'm almost 68 and have no trouble running 100 metres. I hope the legacy of these Games is that people get out of their armchairs and do something to get themselves fitter. Cutting out eating between meals, cutting down on the alcohol and walking just once around the block each day would work wonders. THE antics of stupid kids who caused huge distress to others is yet another example of what's wrong with British society. I'm talking about children not being taught right from wrong, thanks to parents not knowing or caring. The first was the 10-yearold girl who made a 999 call pretending to be a threeyear-old whose mother had collapsed in the kitchen. The hoax sent police and emergency services on a merry chase. The other was the sad 17year-old who wrote an abusive Tweet to Tom Daly, saying he had let his late father down by not winning gold. There is a growing army of people in the UK whose idea of right and wrong is so blurred they think life is just a bit of fun, no matter how many people they hurt in the process. And the lion's share of the problem is down to a breakdown of family life and values.

SEA FOOD, EAT IT!
EVEN without the harissa this seafood dish of diced 7. 1 carrot, finely diced mussels, squid and prawns would be a bliss8. 1 leek, trimmed, ful fish stew for a blustery day. Adding it only washed and finely diced enhances the flavour.
Ingredients
1. 300g whole, raw coldwater prawns, shell-on 2. 1kg fresh live mussels 3. 200g fresh squid,
cleaned 4. 3 tbsp mild olive oil 5. 1 shallot, finely chopped 6. 3 celery sticks, finely
9. 250ml dry white wine 10. 1 quantity harissa 11. 1 tsp tomato purée 12. Small pinch of saffron 13. Small bunch of fresh coriander or 14. flatleaf parsley
Method 1. Peel the prawns, then pop the shells and heads in a pot with 500ml water. Bring to a simmer (don’t boil) and let it fizz gently for about 45 minutes. Chill the peeled prawns. 2. Meanwhile, scrape the
barnacles and pull any beards from the mussels. Run them under a cold tap for a minute or so, then discard any open mussels that don’t close when tapped on the worktop, along with any that are cracked. Chill. 3. Slice the squid bodies into rings and chop the tentacles if you prefer. Chill. 4. Heat the oil in a large pot (preferably one with a lid) over a medium-low heat. Add the vegetables and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beginning to soften. Stir in the wine, harissa, purée and saffron and let it simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, until reduced
by about two-thirds. 5. Once the liquid has reduced, add the prawns, mussels and squid. Strain the prawn shell stock and add about 300ml to the pot. Cover and allow everything to steam for about 5 minutes or until the fish is cooked and all the mussels are
open. Discard any that don’t open after cooking. 6. Check the seasoning (I rarely, if ever, add salt to mussels). Divide between bowls (don’t leave any of that stock and mussel liquor behind – it’s fantastic) and garnish with coriander or parsley sprigs to serve.

BAJA-STYLE DEEP-FRIED MACKEREL TACOS This taco recipe combines textures and flavours – crisp beer-battered fish, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla with a spicy tomato sauce, a yogurt-mayo dressing and crunchy cabbage. We've included a variation using grilled mackerel.
Ingredients
1. 6 tbsp mayonnaise 2. 4 tbsp full-fat yogurt or soured cream 3. Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
1. 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2. 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3. 1 medium onion, finely chopped 4. 2-3 red or green chillies, deseeded and finely chopped (it’s meant to be quite spicy) 5. 400g ripe vine tomatoes, skinned and chopped
Method 1. To make the beer batter, sift the flour, baking powder and ½ tsp salt into a bowl. Gradually whisk in the beer to make a smooth batter. Cover and set aside for 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, for the salsa, heat the oil and garlic in a shallow pan and, as soon as the garlic starts to sizzle, add the onion. Fry gently until soft but not browned. Add the chillies, fry for a couple more minutes, then add the tomatoes. Simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce has reduced and thickened. Season and keep warm. 3. Mix the mayo with the yogurt or soured cream and set aside. Preheat the oven to 120°C/fan100°C/gas ½. 4. Heat the oil in a large saucepan to 190°C (when a small piece of bread turns golden within 40 seconds). Meanwhile, wrap the tortillas in foil and warm through in the oven. 5. Season the fillets, then cut each crossways into 2.5cm wide strips. Using tongs, dunk a few pieces in the batter. One at a time, drop 4 pieces into the hot oil, suspending each one in the oil for a few seconds before you let go, so it doesn’t sink immediately and stick to the bottom. Deep-fry for 3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain briefly on kitchen paper. Add 4 more pieces to the oil, then assemble the first taco. 6. Spread some mayo mixture down the centre of a warmed tortilla and scatter over a little cabbage. Place deep-fried fish down the centre, spoon over some salsa, then squeeze over a wedge of lime. Top with coriander, roll up and serve. Repeat for each of the tacos.

HRT: The alternative Q
A
I STOPPED taking natural hormones three years ago on the advice of my doctor because of the dangers associated with them. Now I am worried about osteoporosis since the reason I started taking the hormones in the first place was to protect my bones. Can you tell me if there are other alternatives to hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?
Lyrica is used to treat seizures, but is also prescribed by some doctors to relieve pain caused by fibromyalgia. Joint pain is a known side effect of lyrica, and there has been a report of muscle weakness and pain.
A
Hormone therapy with estrogens and progesterone have been linked to life-threatening heart disease, stroke, blood clot and breast cancer and so you did the right thing to stop your medication. In women, the increase in the risk of bone loss and osteoporosis is due to the fall in estrogen levels after menopause. The best known alternative HRT that offers protection against osteoporosis is Ipriflavone, a plant based bioflavonoid. Numerous studies have shown that Ipriflavone has a positive effect on bone density. It is most effective for bone protection when combined with Calcium and Vitamin supplements. It is important to point out that Ipriflavone does not protect the body against other post-menopausal symptoms. Isoflavones, another kind of bioflavonoid is best suited for this. Ipriflavone is sold as supplements and can be purchased over the

I have suffered from pains all over my arms and legs on and off for eight months, and have been prescribed ibuprofen and nurofen, none of which have helped. Recently my doctor prescribed lyrica which helped for a few weeks, but now my pain is worse than before and I seem to have mood swings. Can Lyrica be making the pain worse, and what can I do to stop the pain?

HEALTH EXTRA with Dr Machi Mannu
IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOSTERS IT is commonly understood that the strength of the immune system determines the state of one’s health. When the immune system is strong and functioning properly, we tend to be healthy, but when it becomes compromised, the body becomes susceptible to all sorts of illnesses. The immune system is maintained through special white blood cells (T-cell lymphocytes, neutrophils) that patrol the body seeking invading micro-organism which they prevent from entering the body or destroy once it does enter. In addition B-cell lymphocytes produce antibodies that destroy specific invaders. There are a number of nutrients that can significantly improve the immune function of the body. Essential fatty acids (omega 3, 6 and 9) have direct antiviral effects and are lethal at surprising low concentration to many viruses. The antiviral effect of human milk seems to be largely due to its essential fatty acid content. Omega 3 is the most important, and is found in oily fish such as tuna, herring and mackerel. Coenzyme Q10 is a potent antioxidant needed for the formation of ATP, the molecule the body uses for energy. It cannot be manufactured by the body, and so must be obtained from foods or supplements. Meat, diary, spinach and broccoli contain high concentrations of CoQ 10, however modern agricultural practices makes obtaining an adequate amount through the diet a challenge for most adults. Researchers have confirmed that as little as a 25% reduction in bodily CoQ 10 can trigger immune-system dysfunction.
ON THE LASH!
Your eyes need the Hollywood touch EVER wished for longer thicker natural looking lashes? Well, now your wish can come true with Hollywood lashes! These amazing lash extensions are naturally curled, look gorgeous, but also feel weightless on your eyes, being both flexible and crimp resistant. Once applied, Hollywood Lashes are water resistant, meaning you can shower, swim, sweat, sleep (and cry!) without worry. These lashes will enhance your natural beauty, increase confidence and are ideally suited for weddings, parties, holidays and special occasions as well as normal everyday wear. Also used for people in the process of growing their lashes again after hair loss. The eyelashes come in a range of sizes and widths to
ensure you get the look you want. They are applied to the natural eyelash, one extension at a time for a natural, elegant look that lengthens and adds fullness to your existing lashes. Each application is customised to fit the individual and will look and feel completely real. No one will be able to tell the difference between the extension and your natural lash. Eyelash Extensions are great for women wanting to lengthen their naturally short lashes, add fullness, darken naturally light coloured lashes, or eliminate the use of mascara. Eyelash extensions create the appearance of a brighter and more rested eye, creating a more youthful and rejuvenated look. We will begin your appointment with a short
consultation to discuss and determine the look you desire. Your initial full set appointment takes up to 1½ hours. Eyelash Extensions are semi-permanent lasting up to three months, depending on how well you take care of them and on your own lash growth cycle as the extensions are shed along with your natural lashes. A natural eyelash typically
sheds every 60 days and is replaced with the growth of a new eyelash. After 2-3 weeks, approximately 1/3 of the lashes will have cycled out. At this point touch-ups are required to replace the lashes that have completed their life cycle. Therefore, touch-up appointments should be scheduled every two to three weeks.
to burn it off — provided you do participate in physical activity. Late at night, on the other hand, is when your meals are more likely to be stored as fat because you, more than likely, don’t have enough time to burn off the energy before bedtime. Eating before and after exercise is also important and will depend on your individual goals. Let’s just assume your goal is to lose weight. The best time to exercise is first thing
in the morning on an empty stomach; this will allow you to burn more calories. If your goal is muscle and weight gain, you should eat at least two hours before you exercise and ensure you are taking in carbohydrates via a specially formulated sports drink, which will provide your muscles with more energy that is needed to sustain intense, physical activity. On the question of whether or not you should eat if you’re hungry? The answer is yes. You should consume five to six small, balanced meals throughout the day to keep your energy levels up and your insulin levels sustained.
Time your meals to lose weight
Echinacea is a very popular herbal medicine in Europe, so much so that in 1994 German physicians prescribed it 2.5 million times. Echinacea stimulates the immune system by increasing the number and activity of white blood cells known as T-cell lymphocytes which are non-specific and target all kinds of infection. Furthermore, Echinacea also increases the amount of beneficial immune system chemicals in the body such as interferon, and immunoglobulin. Echinacea should not be used on an indefinite continuous basis, because on long-term use, it tends to lose its effectiveness. It is advisable to use it continuously for 8 weeks with a week break in between. Astragalus membranaceus is a Chinese herb used to treat a wide variety of viral infections. Clinical studies have shown it to be effective when used on an ongoing basis against the common cold. It works by enhancing the activity of T-cells and other white blood cells that directly attack any invading micro-organism. Astragalus is particularly useful in conditions where the immune system has been damaged by chemicals or radiation. Antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C and E along with minerals such as zinc and selenium play a vital role in reducing the damage associated with free-radical toxicity. These free radicals are harmful substances produced in the body and known to cause damage to the thymus gland and bone marrow where immune cells are produced. Zinc is important in maintaining the normal functions of the thymus gland. T-cells are produced in the thymus, and when zinc levels are low, T-cell numbers go down. In one study, selenium supplementation in individuals with normal selenium levels resulted in a 118% increase in the ability of white blood cells to kill cancer cells, and an 82% increase in the activity of natural killer T-cells. They say time is of the essence, and this is especially true when it comes to eating and nutrition. Timing your meals correctly could be the key that allows you to unlock and reach your weight loss goals more effectively. There are so many questions which surround eating and weight loss: Should you eat even when you’re not hungry? Should you eat breakfast if you don’t feel like it and should you eat before and/or after you exercise? All these questions will be answered in this article, and it is important to realize that it’s not only what you eat that counts, but when you eat it as well. Let’s start with breakfast. Your grandma wasn’t lying when she said breakfast was the most important meal of the day, and it is. After a good couple hours of sleep, your brain has been deprived of nutrition. Your breakfast choice should be made in the attempt to awaken your brain and get your engines running. For breakfast, you should consume a meal that has adequate carbohydrates and balance it with some protein. Orange juice is also beneficial, first thing in the morning as the glucose (or sugar) it will release into your brain is a great way to wake the brain up. An ideal
breakfast meal would be scrambled egg whites (protein) on a slice of whole wheat toast (complex carbs) and a glass of orange juice (simple carbs). A rule of thumb when choosing options for your meals is to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner. Eating a big meal early in the morning will give you many hours during the day

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.
Richard moved to Spain seven years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!
ADVICE: Jan wanted to know how to get the Yahoo UK ADVICE: Brian wanted to know how to set a default font site back as the default home page in Hotmail Hello Richard, l have a problem with yahoo.uk which is my home site. Everything is ok until l want to search for ebay ect. then a page comes up to say sorry the page you requested not found but in the box next to the date on my home page is Espania, if I click on this I get connected but all in Spanish this has only happened in the last few weeks for years everything has been fine. Jan Hi Jan, you need to ensure that your home page is correct and at the following address http://uk.yahoo.com You haven’t told me much about what operating system or web browser you are using so I am going to assume its Internet explorer, using this you should navigate to this address and click Tools, Internet Options and click the “use Current” button to set this to be your permanent home page.

ADVICE: Peter wanted to know how to get rid of the Babylon Toolbar Hi Richard, you have provided helpful solutions before and again I need help. I use Google Chrome for the internet, but over the last few days when I open Chrome, on the line where you type the address of the site you want to visit the following is already typed there: http://search.babylon.com/?affID=111434&tt=3012_5&babsrc=HP_ss&mntrId=1e756ea200 000000000000ff87afb50d I do not know where this came from, something I did, I'm sure, but how do I get it removed, and is it harmful? Peter Hi Peter, you have managed to get the Babylon Toolbar installed, it’s a useless piece of spyware that gets installed usually as part of another program’s installation routine. Usually it’s pretty easy to uninstall, just go into add/remove programs and look for an application called Babylon or Babylon Toolbar, click it and select remove. Sometimes this doesn’t remove the entire installation and you may need to engage the services of a computer engineer to pick their way through the bits that have not uninstalled automatically.

Dear Richard, your letters in the Courier are very informative- can you help with this one? I have Windows 7 and do my email through Live (Hotmail) as you see from my address. My problem is that I cannot set the font size permanently. I want to set it at 12 but very soon it hops back to 10, often mid-sentence and usually with a new paragraph. I have tried the font setting routine offered through the Live Options button but to no avail. I have used these programmes for several years with no problems but things changed about 3 months ago. Also the Bold, Italics, Underline options often (not always) miss-behave and won't do as they are told. Any suggestions? I can't be the only one experiencing this. If you do reply can you copy by email as sometimes the Courier is out of stock at my point of supply! Kind regards, Brian
A
Hi Brian, in order to permanently change the default font for a Hotmail account you should do the following…
Login to your Hotmail account at www.hotmail.com 1.Click the "Options" link located at the top righthand corner of the main window. From the dropdown list that appears, click the "More Options" link at the bottom. 2.Click the "Personal e-mail signature" link located beneath the "Customize your mail" heading. A new window will open displaying a blank text box. 3.Choose your font size and style. Using the buttons above the blank text box, select your desired font style, size and colour from the available choices. 4.In order to retain your font options for all future e-mail messages, you must create a signature that contains several blank lines between its beginning and end. At the top of the email signature text box, enter a basic greeting such as "Dear." Skip several lines before adding your name. This will retain your font options within the blank lines, and your new signature will be displayed on all future e-mail messages …hope that helps. With regards to your comment about the availability to The Courier, I realise that it’s an extremely popular newspaper and although I understand that they print many thousands of copies, it’s always snapped up quickly, do remember however that you can always catch up with it online – its freely and easily available to read online every week at http://www.thecourier.es/latest-issue

HAH Helpers on a roll THANKS to the generosity of their sponsors and supporters, HAH has been able to buy new mobility equipment, including wheelchairs commodes and walkers. This will allow the charity to offer even more free care to its clients. Lesley Eburne, HAH founder, said a special thank you to Tony Fitzsimmons, who, having recently lost his wife Pam, requested that a wheelchair be bought in her memory. She also thanked DFS, SL Coaches, Mary Leishman Foundation, Roda Social, and all the other businesses that have helped HAH.
While the equipment will be a big help to the charity, they also urgently need more volunteers. Horse-slaughter shame of Valencia abattoirs
THE Valencian Community has sacrificed the largest amount of horses throughout Spain in the first four months of 2012 – 3,427; 41.3 per cent more than the previous year. According to recently released data, the crisis has seen almost 5,000 equines a month – mainly horses – being taken to abattoirs across Spain. Some centres have waiting lists of many months. Abattoirs are slaughtering approximately 165 animals a day. The total number of sacrificed equines increased 31.07 per cent in the first trimester of 2012 over the same period of 2011 according to official data. In 2010 more than 7,000 equines were sent to abattoirs and in 2011 the
figure rose dramatically to 48,821. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales has called the figures “shocking and despicable”. Sue Weeding of Easy Horse Care said: “This shows the situation to be on a similar scale as abandoned dogs and cats. There is always so much publicity around these animals but horses and donkeys are largely forgotten, but this just highlights the severity of the situation in our region. “We were saddened to hear that the Valencian Community has the worst figures in the country.” She added that while the figures are shock-
Matilde Sanchez, President of the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association, thanked everyone, audience and orchestra, for a wonderful evening and their much appreciated support. She presented Clive King with a Certificate of Appreciation from AFA, and in return was presented with a pottery model of a Cornish tin mine, as was councillor for foreign resi-
dents, Rosario Sanchez. Sanchez presented the orchestra with a handmade traditional Torrevieja salt boat. A collection at the end of the evening raised €260, which added to the entry ticket money, gave AFA a substantial donation to help it continue to provide support to families and patients suffering from dementia.
Horses are being locked away to starve ing in themselves she believes they are “just the tip of the iceberg as they represent just the legally registered horses. “There are five times as many illegal horses in Spain without passports and they don’t exist statistically so can’t go to abattoirs and are left to simply roam around or hidden away to starve to death.”
Many of the horses that end up in the abbatoirs are young horses that breeders have been unable to sell, according to Sue, “but still the mares are being used to breed more. There needs to be legislation to stop this.” There is little demand for horse meat in Spain, and most is exported or used in pet food.

Hear’s hoping! Joe in plea for deaf cat MISTY was brought to Joe (The Cat Man) as a tiny kitten at the beginning of November last year. She is a long-haired, white cat with green eyes and Joe thought there would be no problem finding such a beautiful kitten a new home – “the prettiest ones are always chosen first,” he says. However, it soon became apparent that Misty is deaf – just like Joe – and so nobody wanted her. To make finding her a home even more difficult, Misty made it quite clear that she really doesn’t like other cats at all. This is a problem in a household like Joe’s that sees numerous cats coming and going. On her own, Misty is delightful – she just wants someone all to herself – well, she might share you with another human! She copes with her deafness very well and always knows when it’s dinnertime! Like all the cats Joe re-homes, Misty comes with the guarantee that if there are any problems he will take her back. This includes if adopters have to return to their home country and are unable to take a cat with them. Anybody who is currently catless and would like to give Misty a chance can phone Joe (The Cat Man) on 966 719 272 and talk to Rose, or call into Joe’s charity shop near the Quesada arches, or you can e-mail rojo.cats@yahoo.co.uk. The charity shop is open Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm, although closed for the last two weeks of August.

UK HEADLINES
BRITAIN’S GREYTEST BOOK EVER! Daily Mirror FIFTY Shades of Grey has become Britain’s best selling book of all time. It has been panned by critics and is certainly the most talked about book of the year. And just four months after its publication in book form, Fifty Shades of Grey is outselling Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books, say experts. THE HOY WONDER
How little Laura Trott overcame a collapsed lung, asthma and sickness to grab double gold at the Olympic Games Daily Mirror
The Sun TOUGH-as-nails Sir Chris Hoy could not contain the tears after becoming Britain’s greatest Olympian. The cycling superstar netted his SIXTH gold medal in the men’s keirin final to overtake rowing giant Sir Steve Redgrave’s haul of five gilted gongs. Redgrave was on hand to congratulate him with a hug as a 6,000-strong crowd, including Prince Harry, raised the roof of London 2012’s velodrome. And the raw emotion of 36-year-old Hoy’s historic achievement finally spilled over when he wept as he was presented with his medal. He said: “I was in a right old state on the podium. You try to compose yourself but it’s surreal. I wanted to win gold in front of my home crowd. I saw everyone stepping up to the plate and thankfully it worked out for me, too.” Hoy’s triumph on Tuesday was the crowning glory of yet another sensational day for Team GB. Fellow cyclist Laura Trott, 20, took her second gold in the women’s omnium while retiring track queen Victoria Pendleton grabbed a sprint silver. Alistair Brownlee, 24, stormed to victory in the triathlon with brother Jonny, 22, grabbing bronze. And our brilliant horse riders won Britain’s first-ever gold in the team dressage event. It took our total medal tally to 48, including 22 golds — surpassing our superb 2008 performance in Beijing and a record in the modern era. Team GB’s proud Chef de Mission Andy Hunt said: “What has been achieved today is the result of a shared commitment made by 541 athletes, representing 26 sports, to compete as One Team GB in a manner that would make our country proud.”

Laura Trott, age 12, with Bradley Wiggins in 2004 - when she was wearing his gold medal - and now, complete with one of her own special Olympic souvenirs
BRITAIN hailed the sensational performance of 20-year-old double gold medallist Laura Trottt – as cycling Queen Victoria Pendleton bowed out with silver instead of the top prize. A packed velodrome roared young pretender Laura to victory in the omnium event on Tuesday, as she dramatically snatched gold from American cyclist Sarah Hammer in the final heat of the competition. The pocket rocket – who is just 5ft 4in tall – had already won gold on Saturday in the women’s team pursuit. After the victorious ride, an emotional Trott gushed: “I am just so proud to be here, proud to be who I am, proud to be British.” Her amazing double was made all the remarkable given she was born a month prematurely suffering from a collapsed lung. She took up the sport after her parents had been told as an asthmatic she would need to take part in sport to help regulate her breathing. Despite making cycling at speeds of up to 70kph look easy, Trott has a particularly high acid lining in her stomach which means she often ends up vomiting after races. She said of Tuesday’s event: “I thought I was going to be sick on the start line, which didn't help matters. “But I just got going and the crowd just drove me home. I was so happy. “I was so nervous last night I couldn’t sleep. Every emotion was going through my head. All I kept thinking was ‘I just want to celebrate with my family’.” Now Laura’s second triumph at the 2012 Games has cycling stars predicting even bigger things for her...

The measures will ban illegal immigrants from treatment at public hospitals unless they are under 18, pregnant or need emergency care. LOVE ASTONS, LOVE AIRFIX FOR those who think an Airfix kit is the next-best thing to owning a real car, here's a dream come true: a lifesize Airfix kit of a famous Le Mans-winning Aston Martin! How big is the Aston Martin Airfix kit?
Is there any more heritage within the Aston Martin Airfix kit?
It's genuinely lifesize. The kit is 6.35 metres wide and 3.4 metres tall. Lifesize, then: seeing a real Aston Martin DBR1 alongside it puts it into context. It's been created to celebrate the Le Mans race victory of Brit Roy Salvadori and American Carroll Shelby.
An Aston Martin cap signed by Le Mans race winners Salvadori and Shelby is also mounted within the kit. This has been authenticated by historians too, so is genuine.
What is the Aston Martin DBR1?
The Aston Martin DBR1 was a clean-slate sports car design that won the 1959 Le Mans race. Its victory was Aston Martin's only overall race win at the famous Le Mans event. The firm also won the sports car world championship in the same year, beating Ferrari in a thrilling final race at Goodwood. loss of both drivers and (Aston designer) Ted Cutting within the same year (they passed away in 2012) is saddening. We wanted to do a tribute to these three great men and such a beautiful and iconic car!'
How did Evanta create the kit?
Who created the lifesize Aston Martin DBR1 Airfix kit? The lifesize 'Airfix' Aston has been created by Hertfordshire's Evanta Motor Company. Its MD, Ant Anstead (on the left in the image above), said: 'Aston Martin's sole Le Mans win of 1959 is a huge part of British motorsport. The
Evanta started off with one of its Aston Martin DBR1 bodyshell recreations, which is made from composite materials. This was paired with component parts from the DBR1 replica, and mounted a structure finished in the famous Airfix Satin grey.
How genuine is the detailing of the Aston Martin Airfix kit?
In true Airfix style, all the parts are individually labelled and look as if they could 'twist off' to assemble the car. The 'kit' even includes a replica of the Le Mans winning trophy!
Can I buy the Aston Martin Airfix kit?
Should you wish to buy the world's best Airfix car kit, you're in luck: it's going up for auction next month at the Goodwood Revival. Estimated price? Around ÂŁ25,000: we wouldn't be surprised if it goes for a lot more...

New Audi Cam brings servicing online VIDEO cameras in garage service bays aren’t an entirely new idea, but Audi has taken the concept a massive step forward with its new “Audi Cam” system. In a world first, every single Audi Centre in the UK is now equipped with high quality hand held cameras, which technicians can use to record short video clips of vehicle problem areas. These are then uploaded, complete with audio commentary from the mechanic explaining what the problem is and what’s required to fix it, to a special webpage. This can only be accessed by the customer using a unique PIN code. The issues are graded “urgent”, “advisory” or “for info”, and shown alongside the full repair price (including VAT). The customer can choose to authorise the job, reject it, or ask the Audi Centre to call them to discuss further – all straight from the webpage. The idea is to make the Audi service and repair process as “transparent” as possible, in an extension of the existing “Direct
Reception” programme. But while Direct Reception gives on site customers a direct two way link to the technician working on their car via a head-mounted camera and radio system, Audi Cam is intended to make things easier for those on the go. As such, the special webpage has been optimised for use on both computers and smartphones. In addition to the job list, the page will also give customers access to service team profiles, so they can see exactly who is spannering on their pride and joy. Work can only be authorised online with the reentry of the unique PIN, and this is sent separately by text message. The videos will also clearly identify the
customer’s car, to make doubly sure that everything is correct and above board. Head of Aftersales and Service for Audi UK, Paul Sansom: “By effectively beaming the workshop to our customer’s homes or smartphones, Audi Cam greatly simplifies the service and repair process, and at the same time breaks down more of the barriers between the service bay and the customer that have traditionally fostered scepticism and suspicion. “This is genuine progress through technology in the best tradition of Vorsprung durch Technik.” Sounds – and looks – like the future to us. Customer service innovation that’s definitely to be applauded.

TRELI ON THE TELLY with ALEX TRELINSKI I COULD write loads about the second week of the BBC Olympics coverage, but let me just say it was fantastic and it makes me wonder what they’ll do in Rio in 2016. My personal highlight was a glorious disappointment when Zak Purchase and Mark Hunter just failed to regain their Olympic title in the rowing. They were mentally and physically shattered, and John Inverdale had the unenviable task of shoving a microphone in front of them for the usual “How do you feel?” question. Inverdale was gentle and sensitive with the guys, and when they left could barely hold back his own tears. He just managed to cue in the next item before he lost it.
John Inverwail and Olympic emotions
That’s broadcasting of the highest order, that is, genuine and heartfelt, which he then took to his hosting of the athletics. Gold medals to him and also to Clare Balding, both of whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with at BBC Sport. They are streets ahead of others who have never done the basic groundwork in sports journalism and in radio. I’ve felt a bit sorry for ITV1 being virtually wiped out in the ratings over the last fortnight, though Emmerdale and Coronation Street have surprisingly held up well. I’m certain
that the endless trails for the return of The X Factor are being run as a morale booster for the station’s employees, knowing that they’ll be ruling the Saturday roost soon, though the Beeb are firing off numerous promos for Dr.Who and Merlin. Roll on the autumn season! American TV seems to be going through a bit of a phase, where every other drama appears to have Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. In case you didn’t know, Spielberg started off as a TV p r o d u c e r / d i r e c t o r, and as a teenager made his mark with the exciting TV film, Duel, which featured mild-mannered driver D e n n i s

Weaver being chased by a nasty truck. Less than five years later, Spielberg ended up doing a little movie about a temperamental shark causing some hassle for an American seaside resort. And the rest, as they say, is history! These days the great man seems to be having more involvement with the small screen, though the title of executive producer is so vague, you can’t really work out what level of influence he actually has. His name doesn’t guarantee success either, as the dinosaur drama Terra Nova bombed in the States, despite doing well internationally, and got pulled by the Fox Network. He’s put his signature to the musical drama series Smash which, despite a bit of a storyline sag in the middle, finished up on a high, leaving

Falling Skies seems like an obvious Spielberg vehicle, with memories of his version of The War of The Worlds with Tom Cruise. Noah Wylie keeps his twinkle from his days on ER as the amiable star involved with fighting an invasion of planet Earth by some very unsociable monsters. These unwelcome guests are zapping every human they can lay their hands on, and putting nasty lizard-style pods on the backs of the kids to control them. Almost a better form of an ASBO!). There have been some cracking moments in this run and a lot more action compared to the first series, which at times seemed to grind to a halt. I’m
pleased about that because the whole concept had great potential, and so I hope that was as a result of Mr.S earning his executive title, especially as his DreamWorks company is all over the show credits. There’s been a classic bit of “hiding a turkey in the summer/Olympics schedule” for the alleged police comedy-drama, Vexed, which has slithered unnoticed back onto BBC2. I’ve no idea why, nearly two years on, this was brought back for a second run, whilst far superior offerings were not re-commissioned. Even worse, it runs for an hour this time, and is devoid of laughs, which is a bit of a problem for a comedy. I can only presume that the cast members did it for the money, as opposed to enhancing their reputations.

By Pandora Leo July 23 - August 22 Take time out to consider your options; climb a mountain, dig your own grave. Paper with little squiggles on it will find its way into your pocket today. When the morning is done, you will have your sweet reward. Your people need you, you must fight for their freedom. Today is a series of blunders that follow each other.
Virgo August 23 - September 22 Banning people from your house can work, especially if reinformed with large heavy blocks of swingable wood. Monsters plague your every move and will soon be there to eat your flesh. Your words are, to some, like finger-nails scratching a black-board. Your irrelevance becomes clear today and you will feel a new sense of freedom.
Libra September 23 - October 22 Cartoons will flavour the day for you, today, giving you ideas and humour. You may never find what you're looking for, but at least you managed to find that picture of the chimp sitting on a toilet reading a newspaper. A break is what's needed after the start to this week that you've had.
Scorpio October 23 - November 21 Lorry loads of plastic fake dog-poo may dump itself in front of your house today, making it very difficult for cars to park. With every passing moment you are wasting away your life reading nonsense on websites. In many ways you should really go now, but instead you're fascination by this crazy online world of surreal shenanigans.
Sagittarius November 22 - December 21 Login to every site you can and you'll soon understand what the meaning of the internet is. Careful how you handle yourself today - others may be more tense than usual. Your life may seem boring compared to others, however, you *do* have a nice car. When we tell you that it's 'cryptic', we basically mean that we made it up.
Capricorn December 22 - January 19 Everything you have done is brilliant and you will get the reward you richly deserve. Shooting high into the air during a celebration, may cause injury to you or those around you. The similarities between you and Bowie are pretty much endless. You can't star in your own television show if you're a no-talented idiot. Just something to keep in mind - no particular reference to you.
Aquarius January 20 - February 18 Metal objects may interest you today, and cause a new hobby to "spark" inside of you. Liven up your day by putting party balloons all around your desk. Lunchtime is the best time of day for you today. Avoiding the cracks on pavements can seem like a fun game, and probably is. Your ability to play this game may be affected by one or more broken legs.
Pisces February 19 - March 20 Creeping around on your tip-toes is all very well and good, but driving like that is just going to give you sore feet. Be warned about your general demeanour today as others will not take kindly to happy-clappy fools. When you have that recurring nightmare about yourself in...y'know...that position...don't worry about it!

The trainees take on their final challenge - designing their own dresses for a catwalk show in front of friends and family. For inspiration they visit a fashion museum, but the cultural differences between travellers and nontravellers becomes all too apparent and an incident leaves them angry. As the course comes to an end, Thelma Madine is pleased with the progress the girls have made in their literacy and numeracy lessons, but is unprepared when two of them decide to make an early exit.

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com ISN’T it rather odd that despite the multi-billion dollar industry caught up in making golfers better players, the huge majority are 20 plus handicap? To put it another way, I could hear Winston Churchill saying: Never in the history of sporting endeavour has so much been devoted to so many with so little effect. It is my belief that today’s golfers have in their possession the largest amount of modern technology, but still have embodied the most problems. The crammed bag is an indication, while underneath the Titleist cap the brain is also crammed with perplexing theory. Today, advice is bombarding the golfer from every angle and source, and although there is a lot of it, it does not seem to be working. Otherwise the Chinese would be better players than they are, we would be able to play a fourball in less time than it takes to fly from Alicante to Manchester, and Butch Harman would be out of a job (well he is, isn’t he?). One teaching Pro said to me the other day that he has to undo some of the things
A handicap called golf
golfers read and see from well known teaching gurus. I watched the Golf Channel App, the other day, on my HTC Smart phone and boy, the gadgets they have on that!! Even when I was watching the up and coming pros at the Europro Tour they had gadgets that border on bondage. Imagine a woman pinned with a balloon between her arms and a beach ball gripped between her knees, trying to swing a golf club. I am no prude but where I was brought up, they would be calling in the vice squad and asking the pupil to take counselling. Now this is an exercise to enable the golfer to maintain
TITTER ON THE TEE A guy out on the golf course takes a high speed ball right in the groin. Writhing in agony, he falls to the ground. He goes to the hospital and says to the Doctor : "How bad is it? I'm going on my honeymoon next week and my fiancée is still a virgin in every way." The doctor says, "I'll have to put your wife’s wedding present in a splint to let it heal and keep it straight. It should be okay next week." So the doc takes four tongue depressors and forms a neat little 4-sided
bandage, and wires it all together; an impressive work of art. The guy mentions none of this to his girl, gets married and on his honeymoon night in the hotel room, she rips open her blouse to reveal a gorgeous pair of breasts. This is the first time he has seen them. She says, "You'll be the first, no one has ever touched these breasts." He whips down his pants and says, "Look at this; it's still in the packing case!"
to correct posture at address. Then there is the other teaching aid, swing tips. When I was in Florida they sold you “Flash Cards” which were the main points to remember before you swung the club. There were about 25 headings. That’s about 20 more than a 747 pilot has to concern himself about before he safely delivers 350 passengers and many tons of metal onto the runway at his destination. So I started to think about all the advice I have absorbed about golf over the years, which I am supposed to be programmed with when I play. Do not strangle the grip; imagine it is a pigeon in your
hands, be gentle. Then the hands should be not too far away from the body. I should imagine I am having a pee that is where the hands should be (Two hands! I should be so lucky!). Then the angle of my posture - it should be as if I am sitting on a bar stool looking over a fence. The takeaway should be smooth and no jerking. Imagine a bucket of water in your hands and take it back from the address position without spilling any. Or imagine a sheet of glass with your head through the centre; this is the plane of the swing so you should not break the glass. This one has stuck with me like poo on a blan-
over a fence while having a pee, with my head stuck through a pane of glass and my right leg in plaster, and I have yet to hit a ball. So when I go on the tee I clear my head of all the technical mumbo jumbo and just remember what an old Scottish Pro said: “just go up to the bloody thing and hit it.” It’s a win some, lose some attitude, I grant you - but it will slow down the process of making millionaires of the gurus and fools out of us.
ket. Next - at the top of the back swing, the head of the club should be pointing at the target and the right leg should be rigid, as though it was enclosed in plaster. There’s more. To facilitate a proper action in the down swing, transfer the weight from the rigid leg to the flaccid leg and at the same time pull down on a rope as in bell ringing. So there you have it! Sitting on a bar stool looking
Montgo Johns grab Summer glory ON a very hot and humid day, the Summer Cup was contested for the third year at the Font del Llop Golf Resort last week. This is a competition between Golf Society captains and secretaries from the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida, organised by the Vega Baja Premier Golf League. The competition was contested by 45 teams - 90 players, using combined Stableford points, but the main obstacle to overcome on the day was the 40-degree heat and the fear of dehydration. The heat did get to a couple of teams who decided to retire to the clubhouse for welcome refreshment and rest. As part of the tournament, there were five Nearest the Pins and two Longest Drives - one for men and one for ladies. All were sponsored by Campbell Lamont Golf with a Nearest the Pin second shot on Hole 7 sponsored by Kameeleon Leisurewear (www.kameeleon.com) Los Caballeros G S were defending the trophy, having held it for two years. With the same players as last year, Tony Monsalato and Harry Pearson, they did themselves proud in coming in fourth with 69 points. Just two points separated the top three teams. 1st: Montgo Golf Society – John Day and John Feek, 78 points; 2nd: Claptons II Golf Society – David Smith and Steve Hatt, 76 points. STEVE BOTT’S opinions on the Olympic Games have not exactly endeared him to Courier readers. But has our self-styled Loose Cannon gone too far with this latest broadside? Read on...and give us your verdict THE fiasco that has masqueraded as the Olympic Games can now be exposed for what it is - just another means of lining the fat cats' pockets. I can reveal that most of the superb stadia built for the Games will be knocked down after the event and in most cases sold off to be built on. I would not trust your average politician and far less councillor with their own granny's pension book, so what they are about to do with all that land and such is beyond the wildest imagination. Let’s face it - would you buy a car off Boris Johnson? Granted Team GB, as they have been fondly referred to, exceeded everyone's wildest expectations with their medals haul, but I have little time for minority sports - I can ride a bike and swim. The real competitors in the track and field are pretty much professional now so that makes the Games in my opinion a poor man's World Championships at best. The wrangling over the main stadium is a joke. Who would want to watch a football match with that great running track between you and the pitch? Not me. There's only West Ham United in the East End of London with a big enough fanbase to justify moving to a stadium of that size. They would at least be able to generate sufficient cash to justify such a move. Leyton Orient's fans would rattle round like peas in a drum and the only way they could make it pay would be to rent it out to all and sundry. And as for Tottenham in Stratford.....well! No, if I was Mayor of London I would turn all the stadia over
GOLD GRAB Olympic knockdown opens new door to the fat cats
to the public to be used for free or a minimal amount and I would employ local people to manage and staff the venues. That ain't gonna happen - and watch out for a scenario similar to the one that materialised in Manchester with the Commonwealth Games stadium - now the Etihad. I reckon the local Manchester City Council are only going hand in hand with Manchester City's Arab owners because they have oodles of cash to throw around. The Arabs’ long-term plans for development around the ground could turn a rundown Shameless-type area of Manchester into another Las Vegas with all its inherent problems. If it does generate lots of money for the public purse let's see it put into areas that matter like the NHS. We really need that to survive right now. With fewer jobs and less cash about for the ordinary man and woman they are going to need institutions like the NHS more and more. Let's not go down the American route of privatisation that Cameron and Co seem intent on doing. Stop it now and fight for a basic human right. Then I really will start throwing some gold medals about
ERNESTO THE BESTO!
Torry suffered a double blow early in the week with midfielder Corella signing for 2B side Yeclano and Connor Heffernan deciding his career would be better suited by ensuring first team football with a lower league club. Manager Casimiro Torres acted swiftly and signed Ernesto Gomez, who had been such a vital part of Catarroja's championship winning team last term. Fans had to wait until the second half to assess
his worth, but they were not disappointed. The game started off with the higher league team, 2B UCAM Murcia, demonstrating their superiority. The half hour mark passed and Torry began to get into their rhythm. On 32 minutes speedy winger Manu Amores was felled 30 yards from goal. Ramiro swirled the ball into the danger area and it was only parried sideways by the keeper. Jorge swept it back in the mixer and his partner at the back, Rafa, was
there to stab it over the line. Five minutes before the interval UCAM Murcia were reduced to ten men

when Inarejos was brought down heavily. Ernesto replaced Gasch, with Josemi and Luis Carlos coming on for
Sergio and Vicente Boix respectively. Ernesto slotted into the central midfield position and controlled the game with consummate ease. And when Torry forced a corner on the right, Jorge met the cross and bundled the ball into the net. Torry kept up their fluent movement and penetrating runs, with Ernesto now the tormentor. And when Luis Carlos dashed down the wing, Ernesto netted from the cross for a thoroughly deserved debut goal.

Uni’s double first ENGLAND AT No.3
A L I C A N T E University came out on top in last weekend’s annual San Juan rugby 7’s tournament for the second year running. But this time they had a slightly easier time of it against AKRA after winning only by a single try against Miami Calpe last year. Elche, Albacete and AKRA also got through to the last four, and after two hard fought semis it was left with Elche and Abacete to battle it out for third and fourth place. And it was Albacete’s tired legs that proved to be the stronger on
the day. Centurion Rugby Summer School is still training on the beach at Guardamar on Mondays and Wednesdays
between 19.00 and 20.30ish in front of the restaurants and bars near the volleyball area. More info from Garry on 692 767 242.

ALSO VANS! A poser for Fergie: Shinji Kagawi and his girlfriend Ameri Ichinose
Red Robin: Can United really compete? IT'S the Community Shield on Sunday - and what better fixture than Manchester City v Chelsea for the traditional curtain raiser to the new season? Those two teams are set to dominate for some time to come, certainly in City's case. And I predict a bright future for Chelsea under the expert guidance of Roberto di Matteo. My own beloved Manchester United continue to flatter to deceive as they bid to match those two big spenders. All the talk of signing Robin van Persie is just that - chatter geared to keeping season ticket sales flowing while United dilly and dally in the transfer market. Let's face it, they can't match Chelsea and Manchester City for cash. So if either of them want Van

Persie and he wants to go to them, it's a done deal. United do appear to have made one good buy in Shinji Kagawa at a little over £10m - but quite what Fergie is going to make of his girlfriend is anyone's guess. The most eagerly-awaited debut of the league season in British football will be that of Kagawa - especially if he brings his bird with him. It’s fair to assume Ameri Ichinose will set new standards in head-turning in the players’ lounge at Old Trafford. She’s a porn star who takes a sweet geishastyle picture and looks like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth, but it clearly does. And if Sir Alex Ferguson famously referred to Victoria Beckham as ‘that ****ing girl’, the briefest callup of Little Miss Ichinose’s name - don’t try this in a crowded room, fellas, and definitely not on a train would reveal it really would apply to her without any trouble. As for United’s moralistic boss, there could be an awkward situation bubbling with his record of not
wanting star players to be distracted by camera-kissing WAGs. It could be a case of Ameri Ichinose v A NotSo-Merry Purple Nose. Another porn star in the news is Marie Lapiedra, arm candy of former Barcelona president Joan Laporta, and less than half his age. She’s recorded a ghastly song in support of his bid to regain the top job at the Nou Camp which includes a breathy line that ‘he moves my bed with Catalan fury’. Obviously, Joan was in a strop at the busty dirtbag asking him to shift the mattress so she could Hoover up the fluff that gathered under it while she was away filming. There is also a haughty beauty about all-conquering Spain’s football team - and they have a haughty beauty to match as La Roja’s new mascot. Crown Princess Letizia of Asturias, 39, is the future Queen of Spain and watched all their games at Euro 2012 - a dazzling presence in the best seats. Surely this is the classiest kickette in the world.
