HIT-AND-RUN BRIT MAIMED OUR SON

By DONNA GEE LOCAL police have launched a manhunt to catch a hit-and-run driver who left a schoolboy crippled after knocking him off his BMX bike. The callous motorist – believed to be British stopped briefly as 13-yearold Jordan Formosa lay on the road beside his damaged cycle. Then he drove off, leaving his victim with a triple fracture of the left leg. Jordan’s injuries were so severe that he required twoand-a-half hours of surgery and a blood transfusion – and had 40 metal staples inserted in his mutilated limb. The incident occurred at the Carrer de Berna /Carrer de Roma crossroads in La Marina at around 5.20pm on September 17. Jordan’s mother Alison told The Courier: ‘’The police are mad about this. They can’t believe a human being could leave a child in the road without helping him. Regardless of whether he was speeding/drunk/drugs or just plain scared, he still should have stopped.’’ Alison and John Formosa, who came to Spain from their native Cardiff eight years ago, now run the News

Fury over ‘coward’ driver who crippled BMX boy, 13

Express newsagents in Punta Prima. But the only news they want to hear right now is that police have arrested the ‘’coward’’, as they describe the person

responsible for Jordan’s injuries. Jordan, who has a 12year-old sister, Courtney, will spend the next eight weeks in bed and is likely to be off

school for almost three months. Mum Alison told me: “We had been to collect the yearly schoolbooks and Jordan asked if he could go and

meet his friends at the park on his BMX, which we had put into the minibus. “Our last words were, ‘OK son but just be careful’. Jordan has been riding a bike safely on the roads in the urbanisation for four years and he is very confident and knows road safety. “Two minutes had passed when the mobile rang, it was Jordan saying that he had been hit off his bike and thought he had broken his leg. “He said the car and driver had just driven off and left him in the middle of the road.

“Two eye witnesses saw the accident happen but could not get the registration number of the car. But we do have a description of the driver, who we think was British. “He is in his late 40s or early 50s, white, about 5ft 9in, with a bald head and of stocky build. “The car is believed to be dark purple or blue - possibly a Citroen, which now has damage to it from the hit and run.’’ There were witnesses to the incident and Alison went on: “Jenny and Ron from Cristal Pools in La Marina were walking their dogs down Carrer de Berna and my son passed them on the bike. “Seconds later they heard a loud bang and saw Jordan’s legs flying in the air. He tried to stand up and his leg buckled underneath him so he dragged himself to the kerb. “The motorist who hit him must have been driving at excessive speed as Jordan hit the bonnet, windscreen and then the roof before eventually landing on the ground. The driver stopped, reversed his car, got out and

BLOW FOR MORENO AS ORIHUELA LAND SALE IS BLOCKED SOCIALIST PARTY leader Antonia Moreno’s plan to sell nearly half the remaining coastal land owned by Orihuela Town Hall for the construction of more than 500 new houses was successfully challenged at Wednesday’s plenary meeting of the Council. In a Popular Party motion supported by CLARO Councillor Bob Houliston, a motion was approved by a majority vote to stop the procedure and reclassify the land in question for civic purposes. The PP-CLARO argued that the 11 plots of public land in question would be needed in the future to provide facilities for an expanding population; that this was the wrong time to sell council land when prices were depressed; that builders already owned enough land to build masses of new houses if they thought the demand existed - and finally that this was pure opportunistic policy resulting from the government’s failure to reduce run-

Introducing the new voice of local radio

107.1FM: TORREVIEJA RULES THE WAVES Don’t miss the launch – Monday at 8am

A BRAND NEW radio station will hit the Costa Blanca airwaves on Monday morning. Radio Torrevieja will transmit on 107.1 FM, offering a service of music, entertainment and information. The station is currently putting out test transmissions, and although based in Torrevieja, takes in the region between Alicante Airport in the north, to San Javier Airport in the south. Radio Torrevieja will be on the air 24 hours a day, with an experienced presentation team. The schedule will also include weekends from 8am, the music being a mixture of

oldies from the 50s through to the present day, along with new releases and some Spanish tracks. Non-stop music will be played during the night. There’ll also be a full service of news, details of local events and interviews, along with the chance for listeners to take part in competitions and to ask for their favourite tunes. Chris Ashley will open up the station with the Breakfast Show on Monday (October 1) at 8am, with programmes initially running through to 8pm, seven days a week. Other names confirmed for Radio

Torrevieja include Dennis Christian, Davy Jones, Alex Trelinski, Dave Knights, Peter Hurst and Darren James. With the most experienced broadcasting team in the area, Radio Torrevieja aims to provide a professional service tailored to the needs of the audience - and it’s already received major support from local and national advertisers. It will also be the only full-time English language radio station broadcasting from the city, and therefore stands uniquely placed to bring a compelling radio service that fills a large gap on the local radio dial.

I’m a seat, not a stowaway

A young would-be immigrant tried to enter Spain illegally last weekend using a unique ruse. To avoid being detected by police, young Africans have been found in a variety of hidey holes, such as underneath lorries, inside barrels, amongst loads of oranges or

covered in tomatoes. However, never before has anyone been found inside the front passenger seat of a car entering Spain. The 20 year old was discovered in the Renault 7 inside a metal frame which was covered to look just like a car seat.

asked Jordan if he was OK. My son replied, ‘No, I think you broke my leg.’ “With this, he jumped back into the car and sped off. Seconds later, another car came along and the police and an ambulance were called. “Jordan now faces a slow and

painful recovery. He’s at home at the moment after five days in Torrevieja Hospital and needs daily injections in his stomach, pills and very strong painkillers. “The family are distraught and disgusted that this could happen. If anybody has any information as to who did this to our son, please contact The Courier or the local

police.’’ As police step up their hunt for the person responsible for Jordan’s injuries, the Formosas would like to say a big thank-you to Ron and Jenny and James for all their help at the scene - and also to express their gratitude to La Marina Ambulance, local police and Torrevieja Hospital.

COCAINE MASTERMIND JAILED FOR 28 YEARS Now we’re going after his money, vows crime chief AN international fixer for organised crime groups across the world was this week jailed for 28 years for masterminding a plot to smuggle 1.5 tonnes of cocaine into the UK. Marbella-based John Alan Brooks (pictured) originally from Blackpool, assembled a crew to import the cocaine on board the boat Dances with Waves. A multi-agency operation led by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) resulted in the dramatic interception of the boat off the south-west coast of Ireland in November 2008. It had set sail from Trinidad in the Caribbean and was heading for Liverpool. Brooks, 61, was arrested in November 2011 while visiting family in Blackpool, and sentenced this week at Birmingham Crown Court after being found guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine. Crew members Philip Doo and David Mufford, from Devon, and Christopher Wiggins, who had been living on the Costa del Sol, were arrested at the time of the seizure. They pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to supply, and were each jailed for ten years in May 2009. SOCA Regional Head of Investigations Matt Horne said: “Working with international partners to stop consignments of drugs before they can even reach our shores is just one of the ways we under-

mine the cocaine trade and put the UK illegal drugs market under stress. “Brooks was the go-to man for organised crime groups as he was an expert in arranging the transportation of huge quantities of drugs. His criminal career stretches back nearly 30 years, during which time he has travelled extensively using false identities and has been imprisoned on a number of occasions. “We also discovered he had escaped from a Moroccan prison in 2000 but once he was in our sights there was only ever going to be one place he would end up. Now he’s back in prison where he belongs and we’re going after his money.’’ The Maritime Analysis Operations Centre for Narcotics in Lisbon played a vital coordinating role in the interception of Dances with Waves. SOCA shared intelligence with officers at the Centre, who were able to direct Ireland’s Joint Task Force (Garda, Customs and Navy to the boat’s location as it was in danger of sinking. The cocaine was estimated to be worth over £134million. After completing his latest jail term in the UK, Brooks faces extradition to France to serve the 13-year sentence he was given in his absence regarding a 4.2 tonne cannabis seizure in 1989.

Terry 'disappointed'

CHELSEA captain John Terry is "disappointed" to have been banned for four games by the Football Association after being found guilty of a misconduct charge. Terry was handed the ban, along with a £220,000 fine, on Thursday - after an Independent Regulatory Commission found him guilty of 'using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' during an altercation with Anton Ferdinand last season. Terry was found not guilty of racial abuse in a London magistrates court in July, a charge that emerged from the same incident. While Terry admitted to using some racially-charged phrases during the hearing, he insisted he had only repeated back to Ferdinand what Ferdinand thought he had already said. "John Terry is disappointed that the FA commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law," a statement on Terry's behalf read. "He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before

deciding whether to lodge an appeal." Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck attended much of the hearing, which took place at Wembley Stadium, but the club indicated in a statement that they would not be making a formal comment while an appeal was still a possibility. "Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today's decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry," a club statement

that decision. It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time."

Happy birthday Ellis. Love read. "We also recognise that Nan, Paul and family. John has the right to appeal

Speed-bump double gives me the hump A WARNING to all users of the Avinuda de la Platja at La Zenia. The Town Hall appears to have come up with a money-spinning idea to help swell its coffers. It would seem that they have linked up with local auto repair shops as at long last the road hazards that have plagued motorists for so long along the short stretch by Consum have been attended to. I thought I should go to Specsavers when I drove along there the other morning because as I approached what used to be the raised pedestrian crossing outside Consum, I could see, not one, but two of those horri-

ble bolt down humps only centimetres apart. But no, I was not mistaken, as my poor neck will testify as it was shaken badly twice in as many seconds as I raced over the bumps at about 10-15kph. These despicable humps are bad enough when they are set every 25metres or so on some roads, but is it really necessary to have two of them so close together? They are a menace to both cars and passengers alike. the only people who will be happy with this situation are the auto repairers when they get loads of suspension repairs to carry

out and the government deals with the extra taxes this will generate!! BW. Los Dolses always thought the idea of speed q Ibumps was to deter the boy racers of all ages (Spain seems to have more of them than anywhere else). Realistically, the thrill of a mega-bounce probably encourages irresponsible youngsters to treat them as a challenging roller-coaster ride - particularly if the car happens to belong to someone else. --EDITOR

BLEATING ABOUT THE BUSH (BOTH OF ‘EM) I ENJOY reading Alex Trelinski’s ‘A Pinch of Salt’ column His observations on the political scene are on the whole very good reading. Well done! However, in his September 14 column, paragraphs referring to the next American Presidential election in November, stated, ‘Here’s a fact. Only twice has an elected President failed to be voted back for a second term in 80 years, namely Jimmy Carter and George W Bush. Both being kicked out over economic matters.’ Wrong, Alex! Jimmy Carter, President from 1977 – 81, did not have an economic problem. Carter was denied a second term because his presidency was marred by the 1979 – 81 Iran hostage crises, culminating in the 1979 US energy crisis, the three-mile nuclear accident, the USA boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Through such happenings, Carter`s popularity was completely shattered! George W Bush was the one prior to Obama and was a two-term President! I take it that Alex means one-term President George H W Bush, from 1989 – 93. George H W Bush did inherit an economic problem from Reagan but Bush was Reagan`s vice President for two presidential terms so he knew what he was inheriting. Within 24 hours of Bush`s Presidency, the 400 plus hostages were set free by Iran! Despite sending US troops into Panama and the Persian Gulf Kuwait-Iraq invasion fiasco, Bush saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the Soviet Union. The Oliver North Iran/Contra arms deals court case was also ongoing from the Reagan years and into Bush’s early Presidency. His mid-term Presidency had an 85% popularity rating - one of the highest ever of any President, but during his 1988 Presidential election campaign, he had made a pledge, ‘Read my lips, no new taxes, I promise not to raise taxes!’ Because of the US economic recession of 199091, Bush had to break his election promise and raise taxes. Bang went his popularity rating and his endorsement for a second term! JB, Campoverde

Only fuels and hearses ONCE again you devoted over half a page to bashing Ryanair in your Issue 83. If we look at the FACTS and not the totally biased feelings of your Editor, a different picture emerges. The article is about three Ryanair planes that asked for 'priority landing because of low fuel', I believe, in July. It was reported that on one particular day three planes destined for Madrid had to be rerouted to Valencia and then 'stacked' for at least one hour or even longer. These original flights were for about two hours duration, then waiting over Madrid, then flying to Valencia and then stacking for between 60 and 90 minutes. What the Spaniards are intimating is that every flight needs to carry enough fuel, not only to make it to its destination, but also to make the

return journey and then some. If you extrapolate this to transatlantic flights no plane would be able to make the journey as I understand no plane can carry enough fuel to make the 'round trip' without refuelling. Also, as stated in your articles, Ryanair have at least the minimum (not that they only carry the bare minimum) as set out by the manufacturer (who should know how far his plane can go) and also EU regulations. Most, if not all Ryanair flights, carry more than this basic minimum as I do not believe any captain would put lives at risk. Another point is that if an aeroplane takes on more fuel than needed, it uses more because of the extra weight etc. So why aren't the Green Brigade jumping up and down saying that Ryanair are doing their bit

to save the ozone or whatever these flights are supposed to be damaging? To sum up, you are saying that the Spanish Authorities know more about how each individual aeroplane works and fuel needed than its manufacturer and the 'experts' in the EU! To me it just looks like very sour grapes on behalf of AENA because they have lost face against Ryanair over the débâcle at Alicante Airport. When will the Spanish powers that be realise that Ryanair and its fellow non-Spanish budget airlines bring in millions of Euro to Spain by way of holidaymakers and ex-pats. Without these flights there would be no bustling Costa Blanca, virtually no new properties, very few bars or hotels etc. Spain is sinking into the financial mire and then trying to cut off a helping hand offered by the likes of Ryanair. AM I the only Brit who believes maths teacher Jeremy Forrest’s romantic continental jaunt with pupil Megan Stammers does not constitute a heinous crime? The news that the couple’s disappearance was to be featured on BBC’s Crimewatch programme confirmed to me that the UK authorities see the guitarplaying Forrest as an evil paedophile. Which I doubt vey much. We now know the guy has been under a lot of stress (helped, no doubt, by antagonism from those trying to keep him away from Megan). So I can understand why they decided to flee to a country where they can be together without fear. And where better than France, a nation which understands the complexities of romance and passion better than any. “We are not going to arrest Jeremy Forrest,’’ announced a senior French prosecutor on Wednesday. “He is not a criminal.’’ That’s because the age of consent in France is 15, not 16. But from the massive UK police and m e d i a campaign to track the c o u p l e d o w n , you’d think the guy had run off with an eightyear-old. The manhunt has been pretty useless anyway. As I write, the lovers are probably somewhere in darkest Transylvania. Or perhaps even in Torrevieja, in which case Crimewatch won’t be hearing from me. Did you wonder, as I did, why the UK police called that dramatic initial press conference with Megan’s parents on Monday…and then told us Megan was in no danger? Forrest’s ‘crime’ seems to be that he has allowed himself to become emotionally entangled with one of his students. Hardly an offence to justify the kind of dragnet normally reserved for dangerous killers. Assuming that Jeremy and Megan are aware of the

TEACHER’S PIT

Run, Forrest, run...this Megan media circus is sending out the wrong vibes chasing rat pack, their feelings for each other will be growing by the day. And that is precisely what Megan’s family do NOT want. The fact that the couple have been canoodling for several months in the face of widespread disapproval indicates that they are happy to lock out the world if it allows them to stay together. And the WORST thing Megan’s family, her school and the police can do is to try to keep them apart forcibly. Love will always find a way, even if Britain’s ‘enlightened’ society still deems any teacher-pupil relationship as sordid and wicked.

When the teacher is married (albeit very flimsily), the demonisation increases dramatically. So much so, that we have so-called experts suggesting on Sky TV that he’s a child-molester who has been ‘grooming’ Megan to satisfy his evil desires. ‘‘Megan has done nothing wrong,’’ came the cry at that first over-dramatic press conference. What about Forrest? Silence...until that French lawman opened his grand bouche on Wednesday. If Sir is found, or he and Megan decide to come home, I fully expect the UK police to hurl Forrest behind bars. However, Megan is unlike-

ly to encourage Jeremy to surrender to a system that may well deprive her of her boyfriend for several years. The likelihood is that he will be banged up and charged with everything from abduction to under-age sex. Just about everything except Whipping a Pleb on a Bicycle, in fact. From the way Megan’s distraught parents pleaded with her to phone them, you’d have thought her life was in imminent danger. Yet the police assured us they had no fears for her safety, despite her failure to return to the UK with Forrest on a prebooked car ferry on Sunday. The public witch-hunt against her companion just didn’t add up from the start. To demonise Forrest in huge headlines merely drives a b i g g e r w e d g e between Megan and those who have already tried and convicted the man she ran away with. It certainly makes it less likely that she will contact her seemingly frantic family. Forrest clearly has issues of his own, not least the break-up of his marriage – and naturally Megan’s nearest and dearest would prefer her to mix with youngsters her own age. There is also the unwritten taboo that the paths of teacher and pupil must never cross outside the classroom. As for the fact he is twice Megan’s age, so what? One of my daughters married a man 14 years older than herself and he’s the best father in the world. There were a few tut-tuts when she started going out with him when she was 20 – but they knew what they wanted. And so, I guess, do Megan and Jeremy. How many of you reading this column had a schoolgirl crush on one of your teachers? OK, so you just fantasised about it…but what a romantic thought, to be

whisked off to an exotic country, away from all the nay-sayers, by the man you want most in the entire world. Megan sounds to me like a typical teenager– a bit of a rebel who resents her parents and school officials trying to regiment her into a lifestyle that pleases them. My other daughter rebelled at 14, became a punk and was barely 16 when she moved into a hovel with her boyfriend. But she grew out of the romanticism (along with her hideous nose ring) and now we look back and laugh at it all as she works to keep her own flock of three from going astray. I don’t know the full details

Jeremy Forrest of Jeremy Forrest’s background, but in the absence of anyone speaking up for him, I found myself trying to understand his motives. Logically, he should have waited until Megan is 16. But if they want to be together so much that they are prepared

to risk everything, then my instincts say leave them to get on with it. At least until they are ready to return to the fold. From my own experience, the best way of bringing young rebels back into the fold is to give them more rope, not hang them. What I do know is that the way the Jeremy and Megan affair has been handled does nobody any favours. If I were them, I’d dump the car, jump on a long-haul flight … and head for somewhere exotically romantic with no extradition treaty. It’s unlikely they’ll live happily ever – but what a good plot for a romantic thriller.

IT’S A LOCKOUT!

DAVE the barman sounded agitated when he rang me at home. 'You're late, Dave,' he complained. 'We're all outside the pub awaiting your presence and the lads are getting a little impatient.' 'Only a little?' I queried. 'Well, okay then, a lot,' admitted Dave, a note of alarm in his voice. I imagined my fellow members of the hostelry's discussion group swarming around on the pavement and crashing into each like demented homing pigeons denied access to their loft. 'You'd better get here quick, Dave!' demanded Dave the barman. 'Things are turning pretty ugly -apart from Ol' Red Eyes, of course, who is already ugly.' 'I'm on my way, Dave,' I said. 'But might I just point out that the phrase "pretty ugly" is an oxymoron like "bitter sweet" and . . .' 'Just get here!'

shrieked Dave. 'I'm more or less on my way, Dave,' I said. 'But just remind me, why is my presence needed? I've only just sat down to a late breakfast.' 'I'm not having this,' moaned Dave. 'Damned right, Dave,' I concurred. 'It's me that's having this. And very nice it is, too. Crunchy corn flakes with a drizzle of warm semiskimmed milk.

Yummy, yummy, yummy, it now because you have the goes down to my tummy.' only surviving set of keys to 'Please,' begged Dave to the pub.' the crunch of his And then I teeth gritting. 'You remembered. The have to come previous night I had inadvertently put on Dave the barman's jacket, containing his keys, before leaving the pub. I had obviously thought Dave's white, shortie b a r

jacket with its shawl collar and button closure was my own three-quarter length, black, zip-up, fake fur-lined hooded anorak -- an easy mistake to make after a night of hectic social activity. 'So where are you off to - as if I didn't know?' Mrs S

asked as I struggled into the barman's jacket. I explained that no-one could get into the pub because I had been . . . er, entrusted with the keys. 'Blimey,' said Mrs S. 'Your deadbeat friends must be swarming around on the pavement and crashing into each like demented homing pigeons denied access to their loft.' 'Don't be ridiculous,' I said. 'The lads will be having intellectual discussions on a broad range of subjects until the cavalry -- that's me -arrives.' I set off and within seconds my mobile phone rang. 'You're still late!' yelled Dave the barman. 'Please hurry. Matters here are seriously getting out of hand.’ 'Ol' Red Eyes has gone to sleep in the gutter and Daft Barry has just asked a passing policeman if he would kindly break into the pub with his trusty truncheon.' 'Calm down, Dave,' I said.

'And don't keep whining that I'm late. I can't be late until I actually get there. Then, and only then, can you say I'm late. At present I am merely absent.' I approached the hostelry at a swift jog and observed, with mouth agape in astonishment, the strange sight before me. The members of the pub discussion group had formed a processional line and were dancing a conga. The singlefile configuration of bums was being led by a stranger wearing a drum who was zigzagging along the street. The man was shouting: 'Remember, you guys, it's three shuffle steps on the beat followed by a kick that is slightly ahead of the fourth beat.' 'Dave!' Dave the barman greeted me. 'It's fortunate that my mate Bert, the Latin American dance teacher, was passing. He's managed

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH SPANISH 39 WELCOME back to some more fun learning, I hope you managed OK with last week´s lesson - here are the answers, see how you fared: Spiders bother me – me molestan las arañas; The history of the United States interests me – me interesa la historia de los Estados Unidos; I have pain in my head (I have a headache) – Me duele la cabeza; I love ice cream Me encanta el helado; I am missing five euros – Me falta cinco euros; John likes to dance - A Juan le gusta bailar; I love your dress – Me encanta tu vestido; I have a lot of pain in my eyes – Me duelen mucho los ojos; he likes to go to the cinema – A él le gusta ir al cine. Now to make you think for a bit, don´t want to make it too easy! Translate into Spanish: What food do you like the most? - ¿Qué comida te gusta más? Do you lack money to buy a Porsche? - ¿Te falta dinero para comprar un Porsche? What shop do you like? - ¿Qué tienda te gusta? Mary Poppins loves the children – A Mary Poppins le encantan los niños; Cooking interests him – A él le interesa cocinar; I love summer – Me encanta el verano I hope you have been practising all week your likes and dislikes along with some of the other verbs we were learning. The more you say it, the quicker it will sink in. This week we are going to deal with comparisons of quality and inequality. Don´t get confused by the title, it is really very straightforward. Firstly we will deal with inequality. That is when things are not equal, for example: they are not the same height, one is taller than the other. Two items do not cost the same, one is more expensive than the other.

How do we say it? In Spanish, inequality is shown in one of the following ways: más (menos) + adjective + que más (menos) + adverb + que más (menos) + noun + que Here are some examples: You are taller than me – Tú eres más alto que yo, John talks slower than Maria – Juan habla más lentamente que María, I have fewer books than Antony – Tengo menos libros que Antonio. If the comparative is followed by a number, use de rather than que There are more than 20 books in the shop – hay más de veinte libros en la tienda. NOTE: When the sentence is NEGATIVE, ´que´ is used even with numbers, to convey the meaning “ONLY” Examples: I have more than five euros – Tengo más de cinco euros BUT: I ONLY have five euros – No tengo más que cinco euros There are more than 20 students in the class – Hay más de veinte estudiantes en la clase BUT: There are ONLY 20 students in the class – No hay más que veinte estudiantes en la clase Comparisons of Equality: When two things being compared are the same or have the same characteristics the comparison of equality is used,. For example you are comparing equal attributes: The book is as good as the film, the dog is as small as the cat. This is how we describe these situations using adjectives or adverbs: tan + adjective (adverb) + como

El libro es tan bueno como la película Él perro es tan pequeño como el gato To describe comparisons of equality with nouns we use the following: tanto(-a, -as, -os) + noun + como Juan tiene tanto dinero como María – John has as much money as Maria Él tiene tantos libros como ella – he has as many books as her As ever, we chose the form of tanto to agree with the noun: tanto dinero, tanta paciencia, tantos libros, tantas velas When actions (not things) are being compared and there is no adjective, use the following: verb + tanto + como Examples: She sings as much as a bird – Ella canta tanto como un parajo; he thinks as much as a computer – Él piense tanto como un ordenador When there is an adjective use the following: verb + tan + adjective (masculine form) + como Examples: The boy plays as little as the girl – Él niño juega tan poco como la niña, They sleep as little as her – Ellos duermen tan poco como ella So there we have different ways to compare, as always incorporate the sayings into your daily life whenever you can and always look for the opportunity to use them. Think Spanish. Como siempre que tengas una buena semana y hasta el viernes que viene.

A PEKE INTO THE PAST Puddah: A tale of doggy love

One of my passions in life is books, especially old books, and I am a regular visitor to a local antiques shop, which has hundreds of old books from house clearances. I spent half an hour there yesterday going through some of the books. I visit so often that the chances of finding something I have not seen there are remote. So I go on instinct to guide me to where something of great interest might be. Yesterday something very spooky happened. I was drawn towards some boxes piled on top of each other, each containing books. I decided to squeeze my hand into one of the bottom boxes and let fate decide what I pulled out. What emerged was not a book, but an old album, with the name Puddah neatly hand embroidered onto the material on the front cover. As I turned the pages, each was filled with photographs of a Pekingese dog, who was worshipped by the lady who put this album together. Being crazy about dogs myself, how amazing that fate should land this wonderful album into my lucky hands! There were more than 70 photos of little Puddah, starting from when he was eight weeks old. At the back of the album, neatly tucked away into the material, with some more photos, I was amazed to find Puddah’s original pedigree certificate. He was born on Monday July 19, 1954, in Worthing, Sussex. It was clear to see that the lady adored Puddah with an incredible passion and it would seem that he was her reason for living. With this in mind I felt very sad that her precious album, dedicated to her dog, had ended up in an old box in the back of the shop. There was no address inside the album and no first name for this mystery lady. Without hesitation, I bought the album of loving memories

this one is another with the caption, “Looking gorgeous after reversal operation”. He is standing in this picture, so thankfully Puddah made a great recovery. As I turned the page, my eyes filled with tears as I read, “Wednesday, March 8, 1961 - The last day I had him - the following Monday we were alone - Brave as always”. Puddah had passed away, in only his seventh year, as Miss Jordan (righ Miss Jordan wrote, “My dearest treasure and guardian of my t) with beloved Puddah happiness”. She buried him in her garden with a headstone for £1 and have never been more pleased with a purchase in that read, “PUDDAH BELOVED 1954-1961”. The following my whole life. In 1962, she wrote, “A year of sorrow, of wondering and Jordan, writes, “And in his rounded lovely paws, he holds my regret, of tortured memory. The moment and the glimpse of heart and holds it true”. The photographs that follow show Puddah with family that one thing I ask, a sight of you, until then my beloved boy, members and friends, along with Miss Jordan and her my every wish is you”. In 1963, she wrote, “I am forever your loving Mummy and Mother. LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. 1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

Mel’s Dream Bucket There has been a lot of criticism of social network websites, a lot of people dismiss them as a waste of time or a breach of their personal security. There are those who, when something bad happens because of a social network site, run around screaming that they should be closed down. I believe that they must be the same people who have nothing better to do than complain that there is too much gravy on their Sunday lunch or their coffee is too hot. As you can imagine I am a fan of social networking and in particular Facebook. I am on it daily, several times a day. I like to find out what my friends are up to and sometimes share some funny pictures or tales. But there is another side to the Internet and these sites. I was reading about a 47-year-old female with terminal cancer. She has been given six months to live and, to help her keep focused she wrote a bucket list. For those of you who may not know what that is, it is a list of everything one wants to do before they die. It´s been the inspiration for a Hollywood film and I guess many people have made one. But what makes this story more interesting is that this lady made her list not expecting to be able to accomplish half if it. What happened next I hope will show some

of those non believers that there is good out there, and that social networks can help! Melanie Swan Horton was given six months to live in July following a two-year battle with bowel cancer. So she wrote her bucket list to try to distract her from what must have been a horrible truth. The friends of this lady swiftly posted her list and story on Facebook asking for help to make the list come true. The list was only published last month and thanks to the generosity of the public she has

managed to tick off over half of it, which included skinny dipping which she managed to incorporate into another wish of visiting her parents in Cyprus. So at least the water would have been a bit warmer than her home in Norwich. She has also had a champagne limousine ride, a visit to a music festival, learnt to salsa and a photo shoot done with her two daughters. She still has a few items left to tick off but I read her health is now deteriorating, so I guess we all have to cross our fingers that

she makes it to the end of the list. This includes experiences such as wearing a ball gown to a ball, going shopping with a personal shopper and going on a cruise. Hopefully she´ll manage at least the ones she is physically capable of before cancer takes her. She also wanted to raise awareness of bowel cancer; her symptoms included rapid weight loss but because she was exercising and dieting she put it down to that. She went to the doctor when she noticed blood; she was operated on quickly but the cancer had spread and eventually became a battle she can no longer win. However, she remains upbeat and her story should serve to inspire us all, and remind us that, no matter how hard things are for us, there are people fighting just to survive another day. People the same age as you, as me, as our children and parents. If there is one thing we should never take for granted it is this life that we´ve been given, so enjoy it, live it and know that you can say I may have a few regrets but living this life certainly isn´t one of them. Maybe we should all be making a bucket list. Even though the sands of time are moving slower for us there´s no time like the present, as we will all one day ´kick the bucket´. Mel’s bucket list can be found at: https:/www.facebook.com/mels.bucketlist

NOTHING FOR CLEGG TO BE SORRY ABOUT

TO quote Sir Elton John, “sorry seems to be the hardest word” when it comes to politicians. People love to get our elected leaders to issue rare apologies, and are then hung, drawn and quartered for doing it. It’s one of those few times that I can actually feel sorry for them. Take the Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg. Three years ago he could hardly imagine being Deputy Prime Minister in a Tory-led coalition government - and that meant that some of his party’s pledges, like over student tuition fees, had to go down the old gurgler. That about-turn has been chucked at him virtually every day, but people have forgotten that he’s not in charge of the government, and that his party have got some big concessions, like taking millions of people out of paying income tax. Clegg hasn’t got anything to apologise for, and it’s only been done to appease his internal critics for the Lib Dem conference. Little Nick should have called their bluff and said “back me or sack me”, rather than grovelling around with a sorry video that will now haunt him at the next General Election.

Cracking the Whip THE Tory Chief Whip, Andrew Mitchell, is a complete twit over his foul tirade against a couple of London bobbies who were only doing their job trying to keep him safe in Downing Street. He’s

rightly been forced to apologise, only after the story got out, and also in the light of the killings of the Manchester police officers. I’ve also wondered how quickly it would have taken for me to be cuffed and banged into a car, had I used the same language to a member of the Met? Perhaps Mr Mitchell should consider himself lucky that saying “sorry” has been the only consequence of his stupid behaviour.

Sour Currie A very disturbing image lurked out at me from the Daily Mail recently. Trapped as I was on an aircraft, there was no escape as my body froze into a catatonic state. I’d not been like that since I had a nightmare featuring Anne Widdecombe trying out a new pair of support tights. As the pages shook in horror, I was initially tricked into believing I had come across a photo of a mating aardvark or even a bloated whale washed ashore on a remote Lincolnshire beach. I was sadly mistaken. A couple of strained blinks later, I realised that I was looking at Edwina Currie in a glitzy dress from her (very fortunately) brief run on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing. As luck would have it, I had a paper bag in front of me and I used it to control my breathing as the full consequences of what I had stumbled upon raced across my mind.

The former politician’s literary agent had somehow managed the greatest miracle since the “old water into wine” trick a couple of thousand years ago, in persuading the Daily Mail to serialise her second volume of diaries from the early 90s. Good luck to Edwina on that front but Bridget Jones she certainly isn’t, and there

were more laughs to be got from Anne Frank’s little volume back in the 40s. A seven-year-old kid weaned on Janet and John books and Peppa Pig could have brought us greater illumination and depth on the state of British politics at the time, rather this scrawling tripe that had me convulsing in a way that led to my fellow fliers

believing that I needed urgent medical attention. Based on the excerpts, Edwina certainly had a high opinion of herself, and no time for other female politicians who achieved a lot more than she did. You can gather that I’m not exactly a fan! Make no mistake - Currie was a dream for journalists,

and when she became an MP in 1983, she was making more visits to my radio station than the postman. But when she was made a Junior Health Minister three years later, she didn’t want to know us - until she was sacked for her salmonella in eggs comments in 1988. Then she re-surfaced, but we would only interview her rarely as a bit of revenge over the way we were blanked for two years. Of course we now know that she was busy fooling around with John Major, so that might have distracted her from doing other things. She had talent but she always came across to me as only interested in herself, first and foremost, and I never came across an MP who created so much controversy amongst colleagues and opponents alike. One key Labour Party figure would refuse to come to my studios if Edwina Currie was there, and would do the interview by telephone instead. There’s a lot more I could write, but I fancy returning next week!

* ADVERTORIAL * ADVERTORIAL * ADVERTORIAL * ADVERTORIAL * Dear Editor I am just writing to let you know about the outstanding service I have received. To many of us retired old sods are too quick to run things down and not enough of us are happy to give credit where credit is due. After helping a friend deal with red tape involved when her husband passed away I talked to Lisa Geddes in the Spanish-Insurance office in Quesada about a funeral policy for myself and my husband. I already had our house and our cars insured with her and she had done us proud with them so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask about our funerals. I had seen 1st hand how difficult things are to organise in Spain and there was no way I wanted to go through what my friend had just been through, Lisa gave me some really helpful advice and when I relayed it to my husband to be very honest he wasn't keen. I weighed up the options of pre-paid plan and the funeral policy. The policy was only 14€ a month for the 2 of us. So, me being me didn’t pay a blind bit of notice to him and took out the policy anyway. After having the policy for only 14 months and paying less than 220€ my husband Bill passed away and as Lisa had told me, one easy phone call and everything was taken care off. It's all a bit of a blur so god knows how I would have managed if I hadn't had the funeral policy and Lisa to take care of everything. I was already impressed but then last week I had a call out of the blue from Lisa to tell me that she had a cheque for me in the office for 367€ because I hadn't used the full

value of the cover, I'd like to say an extra thank you to Lisa for her compassion at the time. I have never come across service like it, above and beyond is definitely one way of describing the service given. And for Bill looking down on me as I plan my Mediterranean cruise in November with my surprise cheque... SEE, I AM always right! Sincerely Gloria Campbell

DESPITE all the best efforts of the government, Britain has been unable to bring its borrowing under control - we're borrowing massive amounts of money and all we get is the wringing of hands from politicians. Why is it happening? Partly because of the ridiculous benefits culture in Britain, which allows people who have made not one jot of a contribution to Britain to get masses of State help. Take the example of a Latvian born, 31-year-old mother of ten, who is already claiming £34,000 a year in benefits, pays £100 a week rent to a private landlord, and is now demanding a large council house for herself and her brood. Neighbours accuse her of running a "half-way house" of Latvians arriving in Britain. She has refused to reveal how many men fathered her children. She claimed she arrived in Britain "because she could under EU law". Every week, the unmarried mother receives £527 in child tax credit and working tax credit as well as £127 in child benefits. In total, she receives far more from the State than the average UK salary of just over £26,000 before tax. The amount is also much higher than the £9.26 per child she would receive each month if she were still living in Latvia. There, couples can claim up to £1,865 per baby, but payments dip after children reach 18 months. Can you imagine how welcome she would be here in Spain - I can't see Spain giving her £34,000 a year in benefits can you? Britain is a magnet for the likes of the Latvian woman who is the tip of a very big iceberg. It is also a magnet for fraudsters. Take, as an example, a

Nigerian who claimed he was a minicab driver earning just £700 a month. In fact he was living the luxury life in his Nigerian mansion. He has now been ordered to pay back almost £1.2million. He and his wife were convicted of fraud in 2010 after using an identity and immigration scam to falsely claim £43,000 in benefits. The wife claimed benefits after telling staff she was a single mother and a victim of domestic violence. Fraud investigators found he owned a large luxurious house in Nigeria worth more than £1million complete with chandeliers and £89,000 worth of sound equipment. He also had a £25,000 watch. His wife wore a Rolex watch and drove a Mercedes Sport Coupe. A UK judge has ordered the Nigerian to pay £1,197,743.54 in a confiscation order under the Proceeds Of Crime Act, or go to prison for six years. I wonder if Britain will get a brass farthing of the debt probably we will end up keeping him in prison. My biggest criticism is that benefit offices have in the past been far too lax with British taxpayers' money, prepared to hand over vast sums of dosh without properly investigating whether they are entitled to it. And controls have been so lax - immigration has allowed virtually anyone into Britain. The country still has the reputation of being far too soft - no wonder parties like UKIP are gaining ground as the only answer to runaway

and out of control spending. Another story which runs parallel to all this was revealed last week. Because of a lack of money Uttoxeter is stripped of any patrolling police officer one night a week because of budget cuts. They are deployed to a larger town to cover shortfalls there. It's an example of essential services being axed or cut because Britain has been over-generous to foreign nationals coming in and victim to a growing number of fraudsters. It really has to stop. As motorists, we've been told not to fill our tanks to the brim but to keep them half full so as to reduce weight and save money. Wise advice, perhaps, if you're in a car and the only problem you face if you run out of fuel is to walk to the nearest garage or call the rescue services. Not so if you're running an airline and you're flying "on the red". Ryanair has been accused

of putting passengers and crews' lives at risk with their policy of saving fuel by not topping up the tanks. I suppose it's OK if every flight ran like clockwork and the plane took off and landed on time. But what if in the middle of a flight there was an emergency, the plane had to be diverted, but had to fly many more miles because of bad weather and then had to circle in a "stack"? Would Ryanair's policy of saving every penny and perhaps flying "close to the wind" stand up to that emergency? I hope so. Meanwhile, I think I'll hedge my bets and fly with an airline which has full tanks of fuel, rather than one which is accused by Spanish pilots of cutting things too fine.

Cover with a lid and place in the oven for about 2½ hrs until the meat is really tender. The stew can now be chilled and frozen for up to 3 months - defrost completely before reheating until piping hot.

Method 1.Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Tip the chicken pieces into a largish roasting tin and toss with the oil, onions and squash. Season with salt and pepper and arrange chicken so it's all skin-side up. 2. Roast in oven for about 25 mins, remove, toss through sage, walnuts, then drizzle over vinegar. Using tongs, again arrange chicken so it's all skin-side up. Roast for another 2530 mins until chicken is golden brown and the veg soft and sticky. Serve straight from the tin with some mashed potato.

FACE UP TO THOSE VEINS – Natural or AND LEAVE RED FOR DEAD Synthetic RED veins or Tenelgactesia , as they are called by the medical profession, are small blood capillaries whose walls have become weakened and allow tiny amounts of blood to collect. Around 85% of women over the age of 50 probably have them. They often look like small bruises under the skin or like an area of redness which on the face is often a condition known as rosacea. Sometimes they run in families, others are caused by hormones - and yet others are caused or aggravated by occupation, such as chefs and cooks, or by the elements as with farmers and sailors. The good news is that they can be improved. There are four main methods of treating them. The first, but often least successful, is laser. One of the problems with laser is the cost and the fact that lasers are normally found in hospitals, and may involve a lot of travel for several treatment sessions. The second treatment, which is very helpful for rosacea, is IPL (Intense

Vitamins?

Pulsed Light) - a machine that causes the redness to improve dramatically over several sessions and is affordable for most people. The third treatment, which is very good for legs, is Micro Sclerotherapy. This involves the introduction of a small amount of a special solution which is called a sclerosing solution and by irritating the lining of the vessels causes them to close down and in some cases to disappear completely. The fourth method, which is very

good for the face and the most modern treatment, is Thermavein. This clever machine was developed by a UK vascular surgeon and works on a similar principal to cauterisation. It is completely non invasive and successfully treats large numbers of tenelgactesias at each session. Here at Medaethetics we are agents for Thermavein and if any beauty salons are interested in having a free demonstration of Thermavein this can be arranged by calling us.

Feeding your body with vitamins is vital in today’s hightech world. Because of all the processing our natural food undergoes, it is often stripped of its natural vitamin properties. However, the use of natural versus synthetic vitamins has become quite an issue among manufacturers of both forms. Which is better? Well, producers of natural vitamins claim that their vitamins are superior to the synthetic vitamins, most of the types you will find on the shelf these days. Naturally, manufactures of synthetic vitamins say this is not the case.

Vitamins Both synthetic and natural vitamins generally have identical chemical structures, making them both exactly the same. The human body cannot tell the difference between a natural and synthetic vitamin. However, the difference between the two types of vitamins could be the way that the human body absorbs them. Bear in mind that, just because they are synthetic, doesn’t mean they are absorbed less effectively. In fact, the human body better absorbs certain synthetic vitamins than it does natural vitamins.

What’s this lump in my leg? and if not, make an appointment to see him, and discuss the scan report.

Q

Recently I noticed a lump on the top of my left leg. The lump is not painful at all, and while I believed it was getting bigger about a month ago, I think it has remained the same size. I do not notice it all the time, only after my morning running exercise. Kindly tell me what it could be?

Q A

What is a hiatus hernia?

A

Your description is suggestive of some form of hernia which is a general term for a protrusion of a bodily tissue through a weakness in the muscle wall. The commonest types of hernias are inguinal and femoral hernias. Inguinal hernias are more common in men than in women, and in most cases do not require any form of treatment as long as they remain stable. Femoral hernias are found mostly in women, and carry a high risk of strangulation – tightening around the lump causing more damage. Normally, inguinal hernias are associated with activities that increase abdominal pressure such as lifting a heavy weight, or even severe bouts of coughing. It is possible that the lump may have been caused by your running exercise especially if you have not been doing so for a long time. Nevertheless running exercises are not generally associated with any form of hernia. You should visit your GP who may refer you to a surgeon for careful evaluation and investigations to determine the cause of your problem. Do not delay in seeing your doctor, and avoid any activities that will worsen your symptoms.

Q

I went to see the doctor for a yearly check-up, and after a blood test he noticed some problems with my thyroid gland and sent me for an Ultrasound Scan. They found three small nodules, but did not tell me very much about it. I feel very healthy, and from what I read from the Internet, I don’t think I have any problems with my thyroid. I will be glad for your opinion.

A

The thyroid gland is located in front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. It is shaped like a butterfly, and wraps around the trachea or windpipes. Thyroid hormone abnormalities like those detected by your doctor are usually due to a problem with the thyroid gland itself. Normally, the

pituitary gland located in the brain produces a protein called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones-Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid nodules are lumps that commonly occur in any part of the thyroid gland. Some can be large and felt quite easily, while others like yours can be hidden deep inside the thyroid tissue. Most thyroid nodules, up to 90% are benign, and do not cause any physical symptoms. In 10% of cases, nodules can be malignant and cause cancer. Since you mentioned that you feel healthy, it is most likely that the nodules detected in your case are benign tumours, which are commonly found in women. Even though benign thyroid nodules may not cause physical symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or shortness of breath, they nevertheless cause disruptions in the production of thyroid hormones. Thyroid nodules have been linked to a deficiency of iodine in the diet, and this problem can easily be remedied by using iodized cooking salt available from health shops. The most common way of determining the type of nodule you have is by fine needle aspiration, and your GP may have to perform this procedure in order to collect cell samples for the lab. It is performed by the insertion of very fine needles into the thyroid gland in the neck usually under anaesthesia. I presume you have another appointment with your doctor,

WAYS TO KEEP AGEING AT BAY IN the past years, a number of factors including advances in nutritional science and medicine have led to a dramatic increase in human life expectancy. Scientists now agree that a combination of factors including a healthy diet, exercises and a positive attitude towards life are all essential to maintain a healthy ageing process. A healthy diet can never be overemphasized. The most beneficial diets rely heavily on fresh vegetables, fruits and legumes that are naturally lower in calories and packed with nutrients. Antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, Lipoic acid, Glutathione as well as anthocyanins and polyphenols found in coloured fruits and vegetables are now known to be largely responsible for holding back the march of time. Anti-oxidants are very beneficial because they mop up free radicals or toxins caused by pollutants such as smoke and toxic chemicals, or those produced by the body during normal metabolism. Lipoic acid is known as a universal antioxidant, because of its ability to

DR MACHI MANNU’S ADVICE CLINIC Email your questions and comments to machimannu@gmail.com

neutralize free radicals also found in fatty tissue. It is also the only antioxidant capable of entering the brain to repair oxidative damage also due to free radicals. Lipoic acid is found in many foods but in a form difficult for the body to absorb. Glutathione is another powerful antioxidant, recognised by some scientists as the ‘most important nutrient needed to prevent disease and stay healthy’. Most anti-oxidants are available as supplements. The build-up of free radicals contributes to the ageing process and to the development of a number of agerelated diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and inflammatory conditions, including osteoarthritis. Furthermore, ageing increases free radical production which means that your diet should be healthier with the passage of time. Having a positive, optimistic attitude towards life has been known throughout the ages as a secret to a long and healthy life. Researchers at the university of Pittsburgh

looked at rates of death and chronic health conditions among participants of the Women's Health Initiative study, which has followed more than 100,000 women ages 50 and over since 1994. Women who were optimistic were 14% less likely to die from any cause than pessimists and 30% less likely to die from heart disease after eight years of follow up in the study. Optimists were also less likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes or smoke cigarettes. Another 50 yearlong study concluded in 2008 that longevity is improved in men and women who are active, emotionally calm, and organized. Regular exercises are helpful in keeping the joints and ligaments supple. In one study done at Stanford University in California, middle-aged members of a runner's club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run. Running reduced the risk not only of heart disease, but of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. In

fact any type of exercise will likely be beneficial to health. However a well-rounded exercise routine that includes aerobic activity, strength training and stretching can help people offset the effects of aging. Extreme physical exercises should be avoided. Marathon runners have increased stiffness of the large arteries, suggesting that some types of regular high-intensity exercise may actually be bad for the heart, potentially leading to hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, heart attack and even death. Exercise with caution. Contact Dr Mannu, for a Full Body Diagnostic Scan and Therapy

A hiatal hernia is an abnormality in which some part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm and up into the chest. The diaphragm is a thick dome-shaped muscle band that separates the contents of the chest such as the heart from the contents of the abdomen such as the stomach, liver and intestines. Normally the oesophagus or food tube joins the stomach through a hole in the diaphragm. In people with hiatus hernia, this hole may be too large, causing the stomach to slide through it into the chest. This causes symptoms such as heartburn, food regurgitation, and nausea. It is usually managed by treating or preventing the symptoms associated with it.

THE BEST CALL EVER TO A SPECIAL DOCTOR

I THINK that our experience with Dr Machi Mannu is worthy of a mention within his column. After three months of visiting the hospital for blood tests, scans and X-rays, my wife remained in such poor health that she was confined to a wheelchair and became weak and lost a lot of weight. The doctors confirmed that she had many different problems and began treatment with antibiotics and medication. But we did not see any noticeable improvement in her condition. We read Dr Machi's column in The Courier, and our first thought was that he was just another herbalist selling natural products. But out of interest and desperation, we decided to give him a call. We had an appointment with him within a couple of days – and this turned out to be the best call ever . We provided him with the medical history; he then carried out a complete diagnostic scan and after a short analysis he determined the main problem areas, namely the kidneys and liver, which were highly contaminated with toxins after years of medication from the GP. Dr Machi’s first job was to detox her body and after three weeks he contacted us to go for a review. The natural products had done the job and my wife attended his office walking with the help of two walking sticks. Although she still needs a wheelchair for any long distances, there is a dramatic improvement to her general condition. Other natural medication has been prescribed to improve her general health and she is now well on the way to recovery. As for Dr Machi Mannu, he is a most sincere, courteous, knowledgeable and genuine person who keeps in touch for regular reviews and to provide natural remedies if required. Thank You, Dr Machi KENNETH GIRLING

ADVICE: John was replacing his Vista machine with a new ADVICE: Celia was having problems with Internet one and wanted to know about backups. Explorer crashing Hi, I am planning to sell my present lap top. Before I do sell it I want to be sure I can do so without leaving any of my data on the HD. My current system is windows Vista and I do have an external backup. Would my Vista backup be able to restore onto a Windows 7 system? Can I format my present HD and then restore the Vista OS. Best regards, John T.

Q A

Hi John, as you probably already suspect simply formatting and / or reinstalling the operating system will not prevent the recovery of your data, it simply hides it and therefore makes it more difficult to get hold of, but not impossible. The only way to be certain that all of your data has been removed from the hard drive is to use specialist “scrubbing” software that will overwrite the hard drive with “rubbish” until it cannot be recovered, at that stage you can use your operating system CD’s to install and set up Vista ready for the new owner. With regards to whether you can restore your Vista backup onto a Windows 7 machine it will very much depend on the type of software that you are using to back the Vista machine up and how you have it configured, feel free to drop me an email with this information and I will try to help you.

ADVICE: Margaret wanted to know whether she had to change from Hotmail to Outlook and was also receiving a certificate error on a website.

Q

Hi Richard. Have a couple of queries that I hope you can help me with please. Firstly do I need to change my Hotmail to Outlook? Secondly I had a notice saying Security Alert Revocation information for security certificate for this site is not available Then there were 3 boxes YES NO and View Certificate, it did not make any sense to me so I went onto website javadl-esd-secure.oracle.com, but could not understand if I needed to do anything else as I am not a computer whiz kid. It has only ever come up once so what do I do now, HELP. Margaret Hi Margaret, yes you do have to change from Hotmail to Outlook, however don’t worry this is something that will be done automatically for you by Microsoft over time everyone with a Hotmail account will be moved to an Outlook account – your email address will remain unchanged of course. With regards to your other question about the Security Alert Revocation information, this is something that is very complex to explain but in simple terms it means that the security certificate is either invalid or revoked, either way you should not fully trust the website in this situation. Of course there are always exceptions but as a general rule this is the case.

Don’t forget you can follow me on twitter @bluemoonspain Alternatively why don’t you sign up for my newsletter. You can do this by going to:www.bluemoonsolutions.es and fill in the form that is on any page except the front page.

The Internet Explorer notice is still intermittently appearing & it reads as follows 1st Notice - Internet Explorer has stopped working, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem. 2nd Notice - a problem caused the programme to stop working correctly. Windows will close the programme & notify you if a solution is available. Hope this gives you a clue? Thanks Celia

Q

Hi Celia, Bob in the Courier last week was experiencing similar problems last week, if you have tried to disable the Add-Ons in Internet Explorer and have still not fixed the problem then the next thing to try would be to reset Internet Explorer - this usually fixes most problems, you can do this by... 1. Launching Internet Explorer 2. Click Tools, Internet Options 3. Click the Advanced tab 4. Click Reset and then click Reset again on the new window that is displayed ...I hope this helps resolve your problems

Craig is receiving the error 0x80041006 when trying to play Windows 7 games online. Hello Richard, possible that I have done something wrong, I don't know. Problem is when trying to access internet HEARTS or BACKGAMMON constantly get Error Code 0x80041006. Have tried to research it on the internet but it's all double Dutch to me. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted. Craig

Q

Hi Craig, this seems to be quite a big problem within the online gaming community, there are lots of people complaining to Microsoft about it and there doesn’t currently seem to be a solution that works for everyone. During my research I have found just one solution that seems to work for those that are using Yahoo “Add-Ons”, if this also matches what you have then try disabling them and seeing if it resolves your problem.

UK HEADLINES

A SEARCH WITH NO BORDERS THE officers looking for any trace of Megan Stammers and Jeremy Forrest will know that by now they could be anywhere in Europe. The freedom of movement within the EU means there are minimal, if any, checks as you cross borders. The best hope will be a sighting of the pair, or Forrest’s black Ford Fiesta car – registration GJ08 RJO – as this will allow them to engage the assistance of local police to intercept the pair. They will be seeking as much publicity as possible, although without a specific place to focus on, it may be difficult to engage people’s interest and it seems that the privacy law in France may also be getting in the way. They will be investigating Megan and Forrest’s phones and computers, seeking the slightest clue about where they are heading or what their

longer term plan is – if they have one. Another line of enquiry will involve their bank accounts to establish any withdrawals or other expenditures. The enquiry team in Sussex will require an incredible amount of assistance from police in any country where the enquiry leads them. UK officers must formally seek assistance from local officers, and the requests must pass through the offices of Europol and Interpol. The investigators can be pretty sure of only one thing: the pair left the UK by ferry and travelled to France. They will be trying to follow the route they took from

Andy Williams, a legend of music US singer Andy Williams, who died this week from bladder cancer, was best known for his signature tune Moon River. But in a career that lasted seven decades, the legendary crooner's songs were the soundtrack to more than one generation. Williams who poignantly tweeted

"Sigh" just three days before his death at 84 - first topped the charts in the US and UK back in 1957, with Butterfly. But most will know him from his 1967 song Music To Watch Girls By - which was used in TV ads for the Fiat Punto in 1999. The track was re-released in the UK and reached No 9 in the charts.

Calais as far as they can, looking for sightings of the car on CCTV and automatic number plate recognition cameras, and making enquiries at petrol stations, toll stations and hotels, but at each crossroads the numbers of possibilities multiply. Without a sighting, or use of bank account, phone or computer, this will take weeks or months with no guarantee of success. That means the senior investigating officer will have three priorities: publicity, publicity and publicity. They have a lot of that in the UK but they really need it in France and the rest of Europe.

Clegg in call for shrink BRITAIN must shrink its bloated welfare state or see a collapse in living standards and a doomsday descent into extremism, Nick Clegg warned this week. The Lib Dem leader gave the stark prediction in a bold bid to get the country’s backing for another round of cuts. Mr Clegg said unless ministers “completely redirect” where the state’s cash goes the UK will plummet down the world economic table. And that will shoot “hard-liners” and “those hell-bent on confrontation” into power. The Deputy PM said in his keynote speech: “If we fail to deal with our debts, our country will pay a heavy political price. “But the human cost would be higher still. Not only would we fall behind internationally, we would leave a trail of victims at home too.” Mr Clegg also emphasised the differences between the Lib Dems and the Tories as he fired the starting gun for the 2015 election.

A BRIT OF A TWIT

FLUSTERED David Cameron was ridiculed on American TV on Wednesday night after failing to answer basic questions about British history. The Prime Minister, appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman, couldn’t say who wrote Rule Britannia and had no idea what Magna Carta meant. He admitted being embar-

rassed – then joked that he may have ended his career as a result. The PM was welcomed onto the show to the tune of Rule Britannia and dry ice pumping into the studio to replicate London fog. When Letterman asked him who composed the music, Mr Cameron made a guess at Edward Elgar, only to learn it was

Thomas Arne, setting words by James Thomson to music. He was also stumped when asked for the English translation of Magna Carta (Great Charter), though he did say correctly it was drawn up in 1215. Cheeky Letterman then asked the PM to name the four nations of the UK,

adding: “What is the deal on Wales?. Did they vote for you?” Mr Cameron grinned and replied: “Some of them did.” Applause came when he hailed the successful Olympics and Paralympics this summer and he also managed to raise a chuckle when he revealed how people recognised him the States.

SPANISH NEWS

RAJOY TO SEEK SECOND BAILOUT IF COSTS SOAR SPAIN’S risk premium headed north again on Wednesday, a development Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy acknowledged could lead him to ask for a second bailout from Europe if the situation persists. Asked in an interview in New York with The Wall Street Journal published on Wednesday if he planned to ask one of the two European rescue funds for help, Rajoy said his government would need to ascertain first if the conditions attached to a bailout are “reasonable.” However, he added that if interest rates in Spain are “too high for too

long,” thus depressing the economy even further and causing public debt to burgeon, “I can assure you 100 percent that I would ask for a bailout.” In late trading, the yield on the Spanish benchmark government bond had moved back above six percent as the spread with the German equivalent stood at 458 basis points, up 35 from Tuesday’s close. Market observers said the heightened tension in part reflected north-

Merkel highlights bank mistakes GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel held up the situation of Spain’s banks as an example of how not to proceed as Europe seeks to put the euro crisis behind it. Merkel was referring to the stress tests carried out by the European Banking Authority (EBA) in 2011 that failed to uncover the full extent of the problems facing some Spanish lenders because of their exposure to the ailing real estate sector. A number of banks, most notably Banco Financiera y de Ahorros-Bankia, were nationalised prompting the Spanish government to seek a loan of up to 100 billion euros to recapitalise the sector. The German leader said she backed greater supervision of the banks but cautioned against too much haste in setting up a pan-European overseer. “I am in favour of creating a supervisory authority for the euro zone, but we have seen how the EBA was incapable of seeing the problems the Spanish financial system was suffering from in the bank stress tests,” Merkel told a meeting with German business people. Merkel was due to meet later Tuesday with European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi. She insisted it was premature to talk of European rescue funds lending directly to euro-zone banks without a supervisor in place for lenders in the single currency area. The German leader said the only way to compete in a global economy is through painful structural reforms and more reasonable fiscal policies. “In the financial markets there is a lack of confidence about the ability of some countries in the euro zone to pay their debts over the long term,” she said. “The world is asking how competitive the euro-zone countries are.”

ern euro-zone countries opposition to the rapid implementation of a system whereby rescue funds can directly capitalise banks, as Rajoy wants, and German Chancellor Angela on comments Merkel’s Tuesday in which she urged caution in the creation of a pan-European bank supervisor. In his interview with The Wall Street Journal, Rajoy also said his government would set up an independent agency to ensure compliance with the budget targets of all public administrations across Spain’s regions. This initiative will accompany the draft state budget for next year. Rajoy also said his administration would introduce measures to restrict recourse to early retirement. Spain is gradually raising the retirement age from 65 to 67, a move the prime minister described as “reasonable.” Rajoy is currently in New York to push his country's candidacy for non-permanent status in the UN Security Council for the period 20152016. His trip kicks off a two-year diplomatic campaign through to October 2014.

COP HELD OVER LAWYER MURDER CIVIL Guard authorities have arrested a Granada police officer on suspicion of murdering a female lawyer and leaving her body in the boot of her burning vehicle. The suspect, whose name was not released, had been a client of lawyer Rosa Cobo Román, who was found dead last Thursday night

inside her vehicle, which had been set on fire in Granada’s Camino de las Vacas district. The 51-year-old lawyer had been harassed by the officer, who reportedly has a past record of domestic violence, said Eduardo Torres, president of the Granada Bar Association.

All abroad for justice ANGRY over a Madrid court’s decision to drop a criminal case into the fatal 2008 Spanair crash at Barajas International Airport, survivors and victims’ families have said they will seek justice outside Spain. “We are not going to be let down by the [Madrid High Court’s] decision, and we plan on finding the justice that was denied to us outside Spain. This is far from over,” said Pilar Vera, president of the Association of Victims of Flight JK5022.

2,000 flee homes in Valencia inferno terro SOME 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes on Monday as a wildfire blazed out of control 35 miles northwest of Valencia, in the interior of the province. The government road safety agency DGT said that flames and smoke had cut off a number of roads in the Los Serranos area. Some 350 firefighters had worked overnight to try to bring the blazes around the villages of Chulilla, Gestalgar, Sort de Chera, Pedralaba, Bugarra and Casinos under control. A government spokesman said the firefighters’ job had been made more difficult by strong winds, which were fanning the flames. The Spanish division of the Red Cross set up provisional camps to house those evacuated from their homes. Some 240 slept in the facilities overnight. Another 200 people were put up at a school in the area. People in Chulilla had alerted the authorities to the outbreak of the fire around 4pm on Sunday, and tried to fight it themselves with sticks and hoes. “It was horrible, the smoke stopped us from seeing anything,” said Carlos Martínez, a local resident.

WHEN the Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s musical director, accompanist, social secretary and several singing members all left for various reasons, many thought it signalled the end. However, with a new musical director (Judy Phillips), a new accompanist (Antonio Guillen) and a new social secretary (Ingrid Bouwer), the society has been reborn with a new sense of dedication and vigour. And members are determined to continue with the wonderful music of G & S - and also to perform music from more modern musicals by other popular composers.

Rehearsals are now being held at Bar Oasis, Torreta III, Torrevieja on Fridays between 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. in preparation for a concert on November 17 and 18 at Casa Ventura. The programme will still include G & S items but many other show songs will also be involved. New members are very welcome, so if you can sing, act or play piano, then this friendly society with its varied social events will be just what you are looking for. Feel free to attend a rehearsal or contact the chairman, Sue Woodward-Prior on 966784108, email suzywoodward @gmail.com or check out www.gilbertandsullivansociety.eu

Tee cheers for Campo Verde CAMPO Verde Theatre Group took a well earned rest from their very hectic rehearsal schedule for a game of Mini Golf at the new course at the La Mosca Centre in Playa Flamenca. Members felt that they had earned their relaxation time, having attended twice weekly rehearsal sessions throughout July and

August to learn the routines for their October production. Members also rewarded themselves with a three-course meal after

their game at the Athena Restaurant. The group’s next music and laughter show, ‘Anything Goes, The Variety’, will be staged at the Casa Cultura, San Miguel de Salinas on Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th October . Tickets can be obtained from Colin on 966 774 127 or Tom on 966 700 876.

coming months. The highlight of the morning, however, was most definitely the dancers who came along to entertain everyone. The multi-national dancers, under the direction of Councillor Inmaculada Montesinos, performed eight traditional Spanish dances. These included the Pasodoble, the Sardana, El Chotis and Isa from the Canary Islands. The audience was thoroughly entertained by the dancing,

music and costumes of the dancers, some of whom were Torrevieja U3A members. The dancers practise every Wednesday afternoon at the CMO and there are also classes for line dancing, Sevillanas and Flamenca Rumbas, amongst others. If you are interested in joining the group you need to be a member (free membership) of the CMO. To join the CMO you need to be on the Padron and have a SIP card.

If you would like to find out more about the Torrevieja U3A please contact the Secretary at secretarytorreviejau3a@gmail.c om or by telephone 966.844349. Alternatively come along to our monthly meetings which are held on the last Monday of the month at the CMO Building in Torrevieja. Leading a merry dance

TORREVIEJA U3A held its usual monthly meeting at the CMO building this week. The meeting was extremely well attended with many members returning after the summer holidays and taking the time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. CAR PRODUCTION PLUG IN OR NOT? FALLS IN AUGUST THE number of cars built in the UK fell 8.9% in August, bringing to a halt a 13month run of increases, figures revealed today. However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which produced the figures, said volumes are traditionally low in the month as manufacturers use the holiday period to upgrade facilities and carry out maintenance work. Despite conditions in Europe being a concern, it believes production will return to growth, helped by strong demand from other overseas markets. The 78,577 cars produced in UK in August brings the total for 2012 so far to 955,084, which is a 12.7% hike on the previous year. The number of commercial vehicles built rose 18% to 7,608. Overall, vehicle production was 7% down in the month to 86,185 but up 11% in the year so far. Vehicle manufacturing has been a suc-

cess story for the UK since the financial crisis and production is expected to hit record levels by 2015, underpinned by demand from emerging markets where brands such as Jaguar Land Rover are proving popular. Some 80% of cars and 60% of commercial vehicles were exported this year. There was also a hike in the number of engines made in the UK, up 12.5% in the month, with most going overseas. SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "Volumes are traditionally low and variable in August as manufacturers use the holiday period to undertake important maintenance and facility upgrades. Seven mainstream car manufacturers and 10 sports car manufacturers operate in the UK, along with eight Formula One teams and 11 bus and coach makers. The UK is Europe's fourth biggest manufacturer of cars and the automotive industry represents about 3% of GDP.

THE eleven-member cross-party Transport Select Committee has issued a report questioning the UK Government's policy on plug-in vehicles (including all-electric cars or plug-in hybrids whose battery packs can be recharged, among other ways, by using mains electricity). The Committee, chaired by Labour MP Louise Ellman, notes that demand for these vehicles remains low despite a grant which offers 25% of their cost up to a maximum of ÂŁ5000, criticises vagueness in the matter public chargepoints (of which the Government apparently has no register) and calls for the effective use of public money to fund policies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from transport. Another recommendation

reads as follows: "The Government must avoid creating instability in the plug-in vehicle market through a lack of consistency between departments in their approaches to financial incentives for these vehicles and adopt a more co-ordinated approach to such incentives across Whitehall." Interesting that that should come up, because in the Budget of March 2012 it was announced that exemp-

tion of vehicles emitting no, or very little, CO2 (all of them plug-ins or one sort or another) from company car tax will end in April 2015. Their tax rate will then rise from zero to 13%, and a year later to 15%. Also in April 2015, the 3% company car tax supplement will be abolished. The net result will be a loss of tax income (assuming, as seems reasonable, that there will still be vastly more diesels than plug-ins two and a half years from now) but this doesn't alter the fact that the tax incentive will swing from vehicles emitting small amounts of CO2 to ones emitting rather more, apparently in contradiction of the Government's stated support for plug-in vehicles.

CAR WASH BAN? BRIAN Madderson of the Retail Motor Industry Federation, which represents independent petrol stations, has called on the Government to follow the example of parts of Germany where strict laws are in force. These laws ban drivers from washing their cars in the street because of the damage it is believed this can do to the environment with cleaning chemicals entering the water supply. He has also called for a ban on unregulated “pop up” hand car wash businesses, which he said were not subject to the same environmental regulations as petrol stations. Both are seen as a threat to mechanical car washes, a lucrative sideline for forecourts across the country. Now Mr Madderson has written to David Cameron calling on the Government to crack down on the unregulated car wash businesses.

“Our car washes have to be inspected by the Environment Agency and we have to have a method of catching the oil, grease and dirty water so it doesn’t go into the main drainage system. ” “My members are already under threat because of falling profits they make on

selling fuel and now struggling because their car wash businesses, which were a good earner, are being decimated,” he added. He warned that many forecourts are under threat because of the competition they are facing. “We accept that this would be a difficult policy to sell to voters, but it should be examined,” he added. “However our main concern are the mushrooming of unregulated hand car wash businesses, where environmental standards are not in force which often rely on illegal migrant labour.”

TRELI ON THE TELLY with ALEX TRELINSKI REJOICE! Lark Rise to Candleford is back, but it has morphed into a Newcastle upon Tyne department store called The Paradise, and it’s open for business on Tuesday nights on BBC1. Writer Bill Gallagher, who adapted the Lark Rise books, has done the same business with Emile Zola’s The Ladies’ Paradise, set in the late 19th century, and we’ve got some old Lark Rise faces in the cast. It’s totally charming with a glorious attention to detail, as we follow the adventures of country girl Denise Lovett starting work as an assistant at The Paradise. This is a instant winner for the Beeb, who’ve shrewdly kept it out of the Sunday night ITV double firing-line of The X Factor and Downton Abbey. Up instead against

UP WITH THE LARK q ON PARADISE ROAD

Downton on Sunday, we got the first of Andrew Marr’s latest documentary series, History of the World. I’ve enjoyed Marr’s previous efforts, and his enthusiasm spills right out of the screen. But there were some unintentional laughs with some dodgy dramatic reconstructions performed by people who must have been dragged out of a second-rate amateur dramatic troupe. It really wasn’t needed and was a blight on an otherwise excellent opener. Who says that the Brits and Yanks have a monopoly on making quality TV shows these days? There are lots of great little dramas doing the rounds, if you know where to find them. Take Lilyhammer, for example, which is running on BBC4. The star is Steven Van Zandt, who made his acting name in The Sopranos. He plays a similar role as a gangster who turns against

THE X FACTOR The 24 best acts from boot camp have been split into four categories - boys, girls, groups, and in a slight change from the previous series, over-28s and are now competing for 12 places in the live shows, down from last year's 16. Arriving at glamorous locations around the world, the contestants first discover the identity of their mentor and celebrity guest, and then face the task of singing with just guitar or piano accompaniment as they try to outshine their rivals.

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

EURO’S OWN!

TODAY is the day you settle down in your favourite chair or bar and get all excited over the 2012 Ryder Cup showdown at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. Today the TV remote is YOURS. These golfers are among the best in the world and they will take part in what should be an incredible three days of action. Europe's players will pay tribute to the late Seve Ballesteros by having a special image of the golf legend emblazoned on their golf bags. The Friday and Saturday foursomes and four balls will set the tone for the entire event. Inevitably, though, the Ryder Cup will be decided by the singles matches on Sunday. I have selected six players—three from each team—whose performances I think will likely decide who wins the tournament. They've been paired together in several of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup play-off appearances, and it has been creating a great deal of interest in the game. Tiger Woods is playing OK and I don't expect that to change. Rory McIlroy, in fact, is playing even better than Tiger. His win at the Deutsche Bank Championship tied him with Tiger for the most wins on the PGA Tour this year with three. Every match will be crucial and I expect both players to make some noise in the foursomes and four-balls. But when it comes down to the Sunday singles matches, I hope Tiger and Rory get a head-to-head match up to decide who wins this Ryder Cup. A lot of golf fans would like to see that on Sunday and I’m one of them. USA captain Davis Love III already admitted he made his captain's picks based on pairings. But one potential pairing he will consider hasn't involved any thought on his part—yet. Ryder Cup veteran Phil Mickelson will be making his record ninth appearance in these matches. His mentoring relationship with Ryder Cup rookie Keegan Bradley has been well-documented, and I would expect the two could be paired together on Friday and/or Saturday. It's a perfect balance of valued experience and youthful exuberance. I think Mickelson and Keegan complement each other well. They're extremely comfortable playing together and they could be a winning combination.

looking at his eyes you could see he would give everything he had during that week. Poulter has also played his best golf at some of the biggest events this year. At the Masters, he finished in seventh place. At the Open Championship, he tied for ninth. And at the PGA Championship, he managed a tie for third. When you combine his outstanding Ryder Cup record with his penchant for success when it matters the most, Poulter should be a difference-maker in helping Team Europe retain its title. You cannot write such an article without taking into consideration Sergio Garcia who will prove to be the heart and soul of this year's European Ryder Cup team. After being in the role of a non-playing vice-captain at Celtic Manor a couple years ago, Garcia will be a valued participant on this year's team and his disappointment at missing out last time gave him the determination to play in this one. He has all the traits you want in a Ryder Cup player. He's a fiery competitor. He's an emotional leader. And maybe best of all, he's playing great golf. I expect that one day he will be the European team's captain. Sure, everyone wants to see a Rory McIlroy-Tiger Woods matchup in this Ryder Cup, but we sure wouldn't be disappointed with a Sergio-Tiger showdown, either. Remember the PGA Championship in 1999 at Medinah? How can anyone forget? Tiger was the same age Rory is now, while Sergio was a mere 19 years old. The rivalry we hoped for never really developed, but wouldn't it be great if the two could rekindle that classic battle at the 2012 Ryder Cup? I trust that this has whetted your appetite (if it needs to be) and you are making preparations at home or your local bar to watch this spectacle. Sky Sports schedule Friday - Day One 13:30 Spanish Time (Foursomes) 19:30 Spanish Time (Fourballs) Saturday - Day Two 13:30 Spanish Time (Foursomes) 19:30 Spanish Time (Fourballs) Sunday 17:00 Spanish Time (Singles) The closing ceremony is approximately 30 minutes after play concludes So now you know what time you have to be home or go to bed! But do allow for celebrations of a European win.

Rory and Co can tame US Tigers

Chemistry is very important. This is about golf, first of all, but the USA are going to be together for four days and they need guys who can pull together and help in that team room. Certainly, the tandem of Woods and Steve Stricker will be a force to be reckoned with for the USA squad. But I can't think of two guys who would be more compatible than Lefty and Bradley. Ian Poulter didn't earn enough points to be an automatic selection for Team Europe, but he does carry enough weight to be a difference-maker as one of captain Jose Maria Olazabal's wild-card picks. Poults has an impressive history at the Ryder Cup. In 11 matches over three events, he won eight of them and helped the European squad to two victories. He's had a great Ryder Cup record. His attitude and his spirit in The Ryder Cup have always been great. He's one of those players who likes to be in that situation. I think he gets the best out of himself playing The Ryder Cup. At Valhalla and Celtic Manor, you didn't need to motivate him. Just by

TITTER ON THE TEE A man and his wife walk into a dentist's surgery. The man says to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one hell of a hurry! I have two mates sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf. So forget about the anaesthetic and just pull the tooth and be done with it. “We have a 10am tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already. I don't have time to wait for the anaesthetic to work!" The dentist thinks to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain." So the dentist asks him, "Which tooth is it, sir?" The man turns to his wife and says, "Open your mouth luv, and show him."

COME ON FEEL THE MOYES! The changing face of Merseyside football

IS it me, or are things changing in Liverpool? In that great city which gave us The Beatles, superb humour and much more, is the traditional football base reversing? Whaddya mean, John wack? Well, what I mean is - are Everton steadily becoming the new ‘establishment’, the epitome and base of Merseyside football, with Liverpool beginning to look the mavericks, the ‘second team’ of the City - as the Toffees have traditionally been regarded for years? I am an outsider: a nosey neutral who supports neither but has no enmity for either, either! As a passionate football fan and keen observer of the beautiful game, I have spotted changes, perhaps for the worst, certainly in one club, whereas the other slowly but steadily improves… First the Red side: I never ever thought in a million years that Liverpool would sack Kenny Dalglish – OK he ‘resigned with mutual consent’, whatever. But for the club to do that to Kenny was totally out-of-step with Liverpool man-management tradition - perhaps a crass example of the American hire and fire, knee-jerk reaction we are beginning to expect. Dalglish is a man who bleeds Liverpool, a man who always stood, with dignity, for all that the great teams of the last 60 years represent, ever since their beloved Bill Shankly built them up to English and European dominance from the old Second Division. Perhaps the Suarez/Evra non-handshake affair didn’t help, as even some close to Kenny pointed out, but it is to the man’s enormous credit he had re-taken the team management over in crisis and started to build it back on the long road to respectability. Hold your head high, Kenny. So who is currently the best manager in The Premiership? You’d be tempted to say Sir Alex Ferguson, and you’d probably be right, certainly statistically. But if you take elements such as motivation, working strictly within budgets, having-tosell-to-survive and sheer guts and hard work to get the club right, you wouldn’t go far wrong with yet another over-theborder-man (they’re always the best, aren’t they?). Namely David William Moyes. The Scot has a football pedigree as long as the Mersey: 500-plus games as a centre-half for Celtic, Dunfermline and

latterly Preston, where he went on to become coach, Lancs Road, in fact… assistant manager, then finally manager in 1998. Today I look at the confused shambles of a onceMoyes moved to manage Everton in 2002 and has great club on the field. GREAT SHAKES

STRIKE FORCE: Rickie Lambert (left), Ashley Cole and Steven Fletcher

Cole the goal’s lesson in leadership SUPER Sunday supplied the setting for good gestures, great football and goals – oh, and handshakes. Satisfactory Saturday had been appetising, with leaders Chelsea getting the rub of the green against Stoke’s strivers as Ashley Cole popped up surprisingly from full back to score the 85th minute winner. Mind you, the England defender needed to show the others up front what to do; the pundits have noted there’s only Fernando Torres around these days, with three number 10s (Players fags uz woz?) vying for the same spot. Still, the European champions are there at the top, but a big test’s coming for them tomorrow (Saturday), early doors at 1.45 against form team Arsenal, who got a well- deserved draw against the current champions, Man City. Oop in Etihadland, Roberto Mancini is threatening to spend even more of the Sheik’s shekels soon . Don’t swoon - he’s only spent £488 million so far! I can’t believe it when I see the likes of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli lounging around on the bench. S’not

fair, is it, lads? Should be a law against it – and you never know, one day there might be. Anyway, we’ve all got to ‘shut up’ according to Mouthy Mancini. His boys in blue host Martin Jol's new season/new look Fulham, who can do it at home – two wins out of two, eight goals for, none against – but have only one draw in three away games. Big test for the sixth-placed Cottagers, but they're showing promise. Ronnie Barker is alive and well and bangin ‘em in up front for Sunderland! Steven Fletcher's fourth in three games (does he train on Porridge?) was nearly, but not quite enough to beat Samsammers (my new name for West Ham), now wobbling without Handy-Andy Carroll. Was Southampton's first win over Darren Bent-led Aston Villa a flash in a disappointing-to-date pan - or has lethal Rickie Lambert found his Premiership boots?
