SWITCH-OFF By ALEX TRELINSKI BRITISH TV viewers on the Costa Blanca face a big switch-off of their favourite channels from next month following a new satellite launch. One-metre satellite dishes have mushroomed locally since February when reception of BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 programmes became easy. It was all a big contrast to using large dishes or rebroadcasting companies like Torresat or Simulsat - and it happened because the major UK channels were shifted to a satellite that offered better coverage in this area. But the move was only a temporary one, a fact that many satellite installers chose not to mention as customers flocked to buy new equipment. Last Friday, a new satellite was launched which will replace the current one – with key services expected to move onto it from November. And although there are no official service maps of the coverage area of the new Astra 2F satellite, it is widely

believed that reception of the major free-to-air UK channels will be impossible on the smaller dishes. It is also borderline as to whether 1.9 metre dishes will be able to pick up those services. And that could also impact on many community installations around the area, especially on the urbanisations. After seeing private and

public maps of the service area of the new UK beam, the webmaster of specialist Satellite TV reception site Rob’s Satellite World told The Courier: “Signals are always received further than the reception maps from the Astra satellites suggest, but I think that owners of 1.9 metre dishes may be all right. However, we will not know for

certain until the satellite starts testing in the next fortnight”. Owners of smaller dishes will still be able to receive programmes from other channels, but they’’ not be able to watch the main UK channels. And while those who have subscriptions to SKY, along with the appropriate equipment, will have access to a wide range of premium chan-

nels, Britain’s five most popular channels won’t be available to them. If the signal strength of the UK beam from the new satellite is very low, the re-broadcasters - with their very big dishes - could be the main beneficiaries of the changes They are likely to be the only people with the means to pick up the basic channels – though there is an outside chance that the footprint of the new satellite may even be too difficult for them to receive. The only other alternative would be to either watch the missing channels live through unofficial websites, or to access sites like the BBC iPlayer, though you’d need to use an internet proxy to indicate that your computer is in the UK.

Brit Diana, 52, dies as flood havoc hits Spain By SALLY BENGTSSON ELEVEN people died as flash floods wreaked havoc throughout southeast Spain last Friday and Saturday. The victims included a 52-year-old British woman, while dozens were hurt when a tornado ripped through a fairground. Power cuts and failure in phone systems meant the situation was worsened with family members unable to contact each other. Western Murcia was especially badly hit, and the rains wreaked havoc in Lorca, which is still recovering from the earthquake 18 months ago. Fields of crops have been ruined, thousands of pigs and livestock drowned, roads literally washed away - and many homes have been left covered in a layer of mud and surrounded by stinking sludge. Many local residents could only get to their remaining possessions by using a tractor as transport. Others were left isolated for two days, unable to reach shops or other people. Two bridges collapsed in the deluge, their foundations ripped away by the torrent of water which poured down from the surrounding hills, sweeping away everything in its path, including cars and even lorries. One shocked onlooker described the horror as a ‘’sweet water tsunami’’, and remembered how he helplessly watched a car float by with people inside, knowing there was nothing he could do to counter the tremendous force of nature.

Diana Dudas: She had just written a book

British expat Diana Dudas had a Spanish husband, Javier, and had lived in Spain for many years. She was reported missing in the town of Vera, Almeria, after torrential rain hit the area. Her friend Genny Sutcliffe, 56, said: "I was told that her body was found washed up in the lagoon. I'm not sure exactly when it was that she went missing, but the heavy rain started on Thursday night.’’ She said Mrs Dudas had her own holistic therapy clinic and hairdressers in the town and had just written a book. "She was absolutely lovely, very warm, very caring and with a great sense of humour. We are absolutely devastated," said Mrs Sutcliffe. Speaking of where Mrs Dudas went missing, she added: "The devastation in that area is horrendous. A car

had been swept into the front garden of one house - and another into the back garden. A lot of people aren't going to be able to return to their homes for months." . Among the dead were seven men, two women and a 10-year-old girl who was found drowned in a car. In the Valencia region, 35 people were reportedly injured after a tornado hit a fairground and flattened a Ferris wheel. The twister damaged several other rides and cut electricity in the temporary fairground set up in the town of Gandia. Fortunately the funfair was closed to the public at the time because of a thunderstorm. Two cargo ships ran ashore at El Saler, and the ports of Valencia and Sagunto were temporarily closed on Saturday. The flooding also disrupted high-speed train services between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while some bridges and roads became impassible. Around 500 people were moved from their homes. The deluge came after months of virtual drought and soaring summer temperatures all over Spain that triggered thousands of wildfires.

SHAME OF £5.5M LOTTERY CHEAT From Page 1 Pensions he had left the UK. This week, Newcastle Crown Court heard that between May 2005 and December 2010, he received £13,365 in benefits to which he was not entitled. His sister, Melanie Batey, 39, also moved to Spain and continued to claim income support. Batey, a paraplegic, had received £800,000 of her brother’s lottery winnings. But she claimed £23,131.09 in benefits to which she was not entitled. Candlish moved to Santa Pola after his 1997 lottery win and opened a bar and restaurant business with his father. But the business went bankrupt and in 2009 his father died, the court heard. The Courier ’s 2nd ed In 2007, Batey and her husband ition joined Candlish in Spain. She had previously worked at the job centre in Jarrow, South

Tyneside, and therefore had an understanding of the benefit system, said Sue Hirst, prosecuting. Candlish and Batley, both from Gateshead, pleaded guilty to converting criminal property by falsely claiming benefits. Candlish appeared at court on crutches after a hip replacement operation. Vince Ward, defending, said Candlish had fallen on hard times. He also said that Batey and Candlish had been caring for their mother, who suffers from the same condition as Batey. They were both given nine-month sentences suspended for 18 months, with a 12-month supervision order. Last year, Candlish, a former factory worker, admitted he had “blown” his lottery fortune.

editor@thecourier.es YOUR VIEWS ON OUR NEWS

I WONDER if anyone else just gets sick and tired of the moaning minnies who live in Orihuela Costa? We have just come through a horrific downpour and if the local council had not done such a magnificent job of clearing our gully next to the market street in Playa Flamenca, we would have been knee deep in water. It's a shame the headlines are taken by those people smugly proclaiming that they have helped block a land sale which would have given the area much needed revenue, and yet no congratulations to Pedro Mancebo and his colleagues for the many things they have done/or are trying to do for us. Look at the efforts made to keep those awful posters off our walls, look at the different activities. At least I feel the council recognises that we exist. PETER CAMERON, Playa Flamenca

Time to curry favour, chefs!

WITH the approach of darker evenings and diminishing numbers of visitors, would a wake up call now be appropriate to perhaps just a few restaurateurs in our area? Wherever possible my wife and I try to support local business in the Gran Alacant area and encourage others to do the same. Our weekly treat is our Saturday "Curry Night". However, we have recently felt obliged to complain on three occasions at what we feel to be a fall-off in meal quality when visiting two Indian restaurants in the area. The days of hot food served with plate warmers on the table seem to have become a thing of the past with other little courtesies also vanishing. Last night we visited a local restaurant in the early evening. We were the only customers and there were two waiters at the counter. We asked for a white house wine with our order and received two glasses of red which were reluctantly changed. My meat samosa starter (small pastry parcels)were dyed red in the corners to denote the contents for the "Chef". "Authentic Chicken Biryani’’, as buffs will know, is a delicious aromatic meal of marinated meat blended within mild spices, hard boiled egg quarters etc, all served in a delicately flavoured Saffron/Pilau rice. The usually mild flavoured sauce accompaniment is generally garnished with bay leaves, cardamom etc. What arrived was a bland concoction of unmarinated white boiled chicken pieces

coated in a fried rice that had perhaps had a brief encounter with a mild chilli paste mix. The matching sauce comprised a glutonous liquid which contained hard pieces of fine diced vegetables which I assumed had come out of a tin. I politely enquired of the waiter about the part-cooked diced vegetables and he informed me that they are actually from a packet and that "all local Indian restaurants use them ". I stated that the meal was something of a disappointment but there was nothing more forthcoming from the staff who had by now resumed a static position at the counter/bar. We were not invited to order dessert or coffee. We left the unfinished remains of the meal, paid the full price on the bill presented and left the still empty restaurant informing our waiter that we would be unlikely to return the following week. Surely, now is the time to make extra effort to consolidate the goodwill of regular customers and maintain continued business throught the "quieter" months ? GEOFF and MARIAN ROBERTS. Gran Alacant

IF you’d asked me a week ago what I’d do if the road ahead of my Kia Picanto had turned into a two-foot-deep river, I’d have told you not to talk wet. I should also have tucked my skirt in my knickers, abandoned ship - and headed for the nearest bar. So why I decided to take on the elements, I have no idea. I mean, trying to push back the tide inside anything less amphibious than a crosschannel ferry was tantamount to committing suicide by drowning. It is reasonable to say that the raging waters I faced at La Siesta roundabout just after 5.30pm were impassable. The Torrevieja-Quesada road in both directions was now the CV Sea. When I’d arrived at La Siesta an hour earlier for my medical appointment, the local roads were being attacked by a monsoon. But by the time I left the surgery, La Siesta roundabout had become Lake Siesta. It was no contest. I should have given up and retreated into a less devastated part of

WHEN I was a little boy . . . 'Before you became a little man,' Mrs S butted in. I used to spend my Saturday mornings along with lots of other excited kiddies at the local cinema. We were a bouncy bunch of film fans although some of the youngsters were there solely to be noisy nuisances. 'There' was the ABC Minors Club which, I should imagine, had branches throughout the land. We even had a special song at the beginning of the morning matinees. It was played to the tune of Blaze Away while the lyrics were presented on the big screen with a bouncing red ball above the words to help the exuberant audience keep up with the catchy ditty. Then would follow a programme of cartoons, a cliffhanger serial and a fulllength feature, usually a cowboy film. The colourful (okay, monochrome) film characters which brought me great joy included the sci-fi space swashbuckler Flash Gordon, Nyoka the Jungle Girl -- a female version of Tarzan -and the legendary swordsman Zorro.

JOY TINGED WITH ZORRO

Zorro, which Courier readers will know is Spanish for fox, was the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega, a California nobleman living in the Spanish colonial era. Our hero's alter ego was the dashing black-clad masked outlaw who defended the people of the land

against tyrannical officials and other nasty villains. That particular caped crusader's gimmick was to carve the letter 'Z' into walls with his rapier as a calling card. So there I would sit on the edge of my tipped-up stall seat, cheering on the goodies, booing the baddies a n d

crunching on the two ounces of boiled sweets my mother had magnanimously stuffed into my gaberdine raincoat pocket as a

treat. I was always accompanied to the Saturday morning shows by my best friend Eric the future dentist. On one occasion Eric suddenly stopped guffawing at the antics of the Three Stooges and stared disapprovingly at me as I pulled out my grubby bag of pear drops and proceeded to bite each one to bits. 'They're no good for you,' he proclaimed. 'The sugar will ruin your teeth.' 'How can you possibly know that?' I responded. 'You're only 11-years-old for goodness sake! I'm a bit older than you and even I have never heard any of that stuff you're spouting about sticky sweets messing up my molars.' Eric the future dentist

gazed dreamily into the middle distance and announced solemnly: 'I do believe I have just had a vision of what I want to be when I grow up.' 'Huh?' I gasped incredulously. 'You honestly see yourself working in a pear drops factory?' 'Will you two morons shurrup!' barked a voice from the row behind. 'I'm trying to watch the Three Stooges. If you don't appreciate Larry, Curly and Moe then get the hell out of here!' The angry tones belonged to Loathsome Lonnie, a badtempered street urchin who oddly enough grew up to become a kind, considerate and caring priest. Anyway, as we kids tumbled out of the picturehouse that lunchtime, Loathsome Lonnie caught up with yours truly and Eric the future dentist. 'If you two creeps don't stop annoying me,' he snarled, 'I'll hit you on your heads so hard that you'll have to wear open-toed shoes to see where you're going.' 'Blimey!' I said. 'That is some witty warning, Loathsome. Surely it can't be

SAY IT IN SPANISH Learn the lingo - with a little help from JEANETTE ERATH Spanish 40 Hi, this week we are going to carry on learning phrases, then there will be some revision of last week and this. We are going to learn what is called ´Superlatives´ but don´t worry about that word if you don´t know what it means, I will explain it all to you as we go along and it is very straightforward.

scribably handsome. I have not heard in general conversation the word sumamente, however it needs to be learnt, you will most likely find something is muy or ísimo. So there you have the superlative, it is quite easy once

There are two types of superlative, relative and absolute, I will give you examples in English and it will become clear, rather than try and blind you with grammar and words. The relative superlative in English is formed by using the word ´most´ or the ending ´-est´ and relates to some larger group Examples: You are the most intelligent student in the class; You are the smartest student in the class. In Spanish the relative superlative construction is: definite article + noun + más (menos) + adjective + de Examples: Tú eres el estudiante más inteligente de la clase, Bill Gates es él hombre más rico de los EEUU – Bill Gates is the richest man in the USA. The absolute superlative for adjectives has three possible forms in Spanish: muy + adjective; sumamente + adjective; adjective + ísimo (-a, -as, -os) And it is used when there is no larger group, i.e. normally when it is the last words used Examples: Muy rico – very tasty, sumamente rico – extremely tasty, riquísimo – indescribably tasty Note the c changes to qu with the word rico – riquísimo. Other examples, muy guapo – very handsome, sumamente guapo, extremely handsome, guapísimo – inde-

learning. But also remember that you will never know every word in Spanish, nor will you need to, we don´t know every word in English so don´t look at a Spanish dictionary with a heavy heart, you now have enough words to be able to make simple sentences in the present tense, and hopefully your confidence is building. There may be days when you just want to throw away the books and forget you even tried to learn but those will be few and far between and the sense of satisfaction we get when we can hold a basic conversation will overshadow any moments of doubt you may have. I know there were several times when I decided that I would never be able to speak more than a few words and I would certainly never be able to hold any sort of conversation, but I overcame that and look at me now! You can get there too, with a lot of time and effort, and I promise you, it will all be worthwhile. So here is some work to keep you busy, take your time to ensure you get the correct answers, we will be doing more and more writing very soon, I will soon be able to leave you to write the lessons for me I hope!! Here are translations using last weeks lesson and this one, don´t forget you can get all my previous lessons via the website www.thecourier.es

To think in Spanish is most of the battle, unless you have Spanish in your head a good proportion of the day you will find it hard to remember all the words that you are

SKY'S THE LIMIT

My dog shuns me if the wife's not around Q

DEAR Peter, I wonder if you have any suggestions to a problem we have with our seven-month-old puppy, Sky. She is a cross German Shepherd and Collie (we think). We got her from a rescue centre in May and for the first two months she was more affectionate to me than my wife, but in the last two months she seems afraid of me and will only go for walks or do anything if it is the two of us. It has got so bad she runs away from me if I am alone and yet some evenings she is very friendly and wants strokes and cuddles from me - but only if the wife is sit-

ting beside me. It would appear that she is becoming closer and closer to my wife. She is also very timid with strangers and loud noises. I would be grateful for any suggestions to this problem. MAURICE SWEET (Eagles Nest) San Miguel

A

HI Maurice. Has anything changed in your circumstances in the last two months?

Dogs are experts at picking up on energy and Sky is telling you that something has changed within you from the first two months, to the last two months. You also have to be very careful not be trying too hard for this all to work out. What I mean by this is do not be trying or giving your dog affection at times when she is showing apprehension or nerves, as you will then be nurturing that state of mind.

It would be a good idea if you only, for the next two or three weeks, take care of the feeding duties. When preparing her food, make sure she is calm, then when presenting the food to her make sure she is looking at you and not the food bowl. This creates trust and respect. When she looks at you, give her the food and walk away.

Both you and your wife have to be very aware of when you are giving her affection. If you give affection when your dog is calm, then that is the state of mind you will be nurturing, which is their natural state. When you would like to give Sky affection, call her to you when she is calm, rather than when dogs invade the owner’s space and demand affection.

If she enjoys games, such as playing with a ball etc, it would be a good idea to instigate these activities with her. Most importantly, dogs follow a person who is calm and I mean genuinely calm, so make sure you start giving yourself some relaxation time each day, so that you can start to nurture your calm side.

Also, as difficult as it may be for your wife, it would be beneficial if she gave Sky less attention for the next few weeks, until you have begun to bond closer with her.

Dogs need an owner who stays calm, provides exercise, instils consistent rules into the relationship and a person who gives affection at the right times. That, put simply, is the recipe for success.

Then, when Sky is responding in a positive way towards you, with no fear or anxiety, your wife can then start giving Sky more attention, but at the right times.

Good luck, Peter

ACCORDING TO LINEA DIRECTA, 3 OUT OF 4 ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH ARE CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR Whenever we find ourselves in a difficult or dangerous situation when we are driving we only have a fraction of a second to take a decision and carry it out correctly. Consequently, when drivers take the wrong decision, the number of accidents resulting in death or injury is tripled, as figures show that 73% of accidents are caused by drivers making a bad decision, compared to 27% in which they acted correctly. This is the main conclusion of the study “Decision-making when driving” in which 174,000 accidents resulting in injury or death have been analysed. This means that in the last 4 years, nearly 130,000 accidents resulting in injury or death could have been avoided if the drivers involved had been able to assess the dangers on the road correctly. The most common errors are due to drivers being distracted, joining roads incorrectly, turning badly, illegally overtaking and not maintaining a safe distance between the vehicle in front. As for types of road, Línea Directa’s report confirms that conventional roads are the most dangerous, due to the fact that 76% of accidents take place on them. On dual carriageways and motorways, the most common types of accident caused by driver error are rear-end collisions and vehicle crashes, mainly due to sudden braking and the switching of lanes. Driver Profile Men aged between 18 and 24 who have held a driving licence for less than two years and the over 65s are those most likely to be involved in accidents due to driver error. The former because they have a lower perception of risk and the latter because they have lost certain skills. On the other hand, women aged between 35 and 64, who have held a driving licence for 15 years or more are those who take the best decisions.

TAKE CARE! GALLUPS ARE GETTING RISKY

POLITICIANS and the media owe a huge debt of gratitude to a certain George Gallup. Back in 1936, he conducted the first scientifically produced opinion poll, which correctly predicted a landslide victory for Franklin D Roosevelt in that year’s American Presidential election. Mr Gallup seemed to be rather good at what he did, and in the UK, his was the only company that correctly predicted Labour’s big election win of 1945. The genie was very much let out of the bottle and opinion polls have become an important part of the political landscape. However, as with most things, you have to be careful how you use the polls and the kind of questions that you ask. In fact, some countries ban them in the last couple of weeks of election campaigns, because it’s believed people make up their minds who to

vote for, based on what the polls are saying. That is just nonsense, and besides being undemocratic, it treats people as fools, and of course in the modern Internet age, you can access any information that you want at any time. The problem with the polls is that the media get obsessed with them and there are far too many at election times. Politicians are also twofaced in saying that they don’t trust them, yet they are ordering their own private polls quicker than yours truly buying a drink for somebody at a bar. You can also play the game of ordering an opinion poll, knowing full well what the results will be and try to use it for your own political advantage. Take, for example, a mischievous poll that was commissioned by the Conservative Party, the results of which were published just in time for Labour’s annual conference. It shows

From page 10 original.' Lonnie moved menacingly closer to us. 'Okay, okay,' I said. 'Me and Eric are sorry for upsetting you and it will never happen again.' 'In that case,' replied Loathsome gently, 'I forgive you both. Bless you, my children, and go in peace.' 'Huh?' Eric and I chorused in amazement at our oppressor's complete change of

there was a general election tomorrow? Perhaps Tory Central Office would not have liked the answer. Over in America, the opinion polls are rolling out quicker than burgers at a fast food joint, with some showing the Obama/Romney Presidential race as neck and neck, whilst others, including Gallup, show a big lead for Obama. The US TV networks are pouring over the figures nonstop, with some clearly wanting a close race purely in the interest of TV ratings. Once again some of the closer polls are being highlighted because they make bigger headlines, whilst the surveys that really count are those in the dozen or so key marginal states where the election is really fought. And, guess what? Obama is well ahead and barring a bad performance in the TV debates with Romney, the result is a foregone conclusion: - something that will not

q

that more than 70 per cent of voters don’t believe Ed Miliband has what it takes to be Prime Minister. Also that two-thirds of undecided voters are likely to vote Labour if he is removed and replaced by his elder brother David. What the Tories don’t say is that David Cameron had similar negative numbers when he was Leader of the Opposition, and that barring Tony Blair, every Opposition leader gets a poor rating when the public are quizzed about their views as to whether they would be good

attitude. Lonnie, the future priest, gazed dreamily into the middle distance and announced solemnly: 'I do believe I have just had a vision of what I want to be when I grow up.' The day had assumed spooky proportions. Two youngsters had glimpsed into the future and foreseen their callings. But what about me? What was my destiny? I hadn't a clue.

in the top job. The fact is that we don’t know how good they’ll be as PM, until they first go through the door into 10 Downing Street, and such poll questions are of little consequence. The Conservatives could have paid me a quarter of the fee that the Populus polling organisation got, and I could have given them the same answers in 30 seconds! Didn’t you find it strange, though, that there wasn’t a question about the party people are likely to vote for if

Fast-forward to the present. I wandered into the kitchen and asked Mrs S: 'Did you mean what you said just now-- that I'm a little man? Is that how you see me?' Mrs S gave me a comforting hug. 'Of course not, darling. You are a giant among men, a colossus, a Herculean hero, a demigod.' 'Gee, thanks,' I simpered. 'No probs,' Mrs S said. 'Now go fetch your pipe and slippers, watch a bit of telly and then take a well-deserved snooze.' I settled down on the sofa, yawned a couple of times, and thought of that strange Saturday all those years ago with my pal Eric the future dentist and Loathsome Lonnie, the future priest. I gazed dreamily into the middle distance

please the TV bosses wanting an exciting election night. What is David Cameron playing at? And I’m not referring to his recent appearance on the David Letterman show on US TV. He’s now promising to offer a referendum on the European Union after the 2015 election, but we don’t know exactly what it’ll be about and what the question will be. Is it about further powers from Brussels? Is it going to be a full-blown question about total withdrawal from the EU? I agree with such diverse figures like the UKIP leader Nigel Farage and in the past, the Lib Dem boss, Nick Clegg. There should be a straightforward question about staying or leaving the EU, let’s the settle the matter one way or another. Cameron, by the way, is no different from his predecessors at No.10 on this, so what is he scared of in putting the issue straight in front of the voters?

and suddenly announced solemnly to myself: 'I do believe I have just had a vision of what I want to be when I . . . er . . . grow up.' Grabbing my coat, I fastened the top button around my neck in the manner of a cape, donned my dark glasses, plonked my black gardening hat on my head and trotted off down the street intent on aiding some downtrodden peasants. But it was raining and there was nobody around so I carved the letter 'Z' into the chip shop wall with the pointy end of my umbrella and galloped off to the pub. 'Zorro, I mean sorry, to intrude, mis amigos,' I announced. 'But considering I'm a guest in your hosteleria, a large glass of Californian tequila would be just the job.'

Diet is Wonder Cure for Diabetes Eating a low-calorie diet for just 4 months can cure type 2 diabetes, it was revealed late last year in a piece of medical research headed by Dr.Sebastian Hammer and reported at the Annual general meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. “ It is striking to see how a relatively simple intervention of a very low calorie diet effectively cures Type 2 diabetes”. Thus reported the Express and titled the article Diet is Wonder Cure for Diabetes. The discovery has major implications because diabetics and the obese are particularly at risk of suffering a potentially fatal heart attack or being affected by debilitating heart disease. 80% of type 2 diabetics are likely to be overweight. Another interesting fact is that waist circumference increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Cambridge 800 Diet Plan is suitable for use by diabetics and its use is based on sound clinical research and experience. Cambridge has developed a strict protocol and invested in training its Consultants to work

with diabetic clients to help them to lose weight and improve their health status. Cambridge Consultants work with their clients on a one to one basis so there is no need to feel embarrassed about being overweight and there are no group sessions to deal with. Here at Medaesthetics we have a private office where all weighing, measuring and discussions are undertaken and everything is done in the strictest confidence. We always work with the clients medical practitioner so that everyone is working together to improve the health of the individual. It doesn’t matter if clients don’t speak Spanish as all our paperwork is in both languages and we will write to doctors in Spanish so that clients only need to pass the letter over and not worry if they are not fluent in Spanish as we take all the effort out of communication. Cambridge want to make life as easy as we can for all our clients and although only the individual can make the first step by coming along for a consultation after that it really couldn’t be simpler.

Living in Spain makes us sick! Q

Since I moved to Spain 14 months ago my husband and I have not been in good health which is really why we decided to relocate. I will say that my health problems started soon after I got here and started having severe coughing episodes with nose congestions and headaches. I went to the hospital and blood tests and X-rays were carried out which showed no problems. The doctor suspected it was some form of infection and prescribed antibiotics which helped treat the problem. Shortly after, my husband started experiencing pains and muscle spasms on both legs and he visited the doctor who could not tell him what was causing the pains. Since then we have had all sorts of ill health. I have suffered from abdominal pains, sleeping problems and my husband thinks he is losing his hair. We were in great health before we moved to Spain, and cannot understand why all this is happening. The hospitals haven’t been of much help, and we will appreciate any advice you can give us.

A

You mentioned that you and your husband were in good health before you relocated to Spain and your health problems started shortly after. It seems to me that your recurring health problems may be caused by exposure to a chemical substance in your home here in Spain that was not present in your previous location. I presume you moved into a newly built apartment, or perhaps bought some new furniture when you came over here. Depending on where you live in Spain, the presence of sea salt and the salt lakes, which although very beneficial to health, can cause high levels of humidity leading to increased dampness in homes. Damp conditions favour the growth of several strains of moulds that can cause some of the symptoms you describe. Recently I had a patient who had a similar history to yours, having moved to Spain, she soon after developed respiratory problems. After a diagnostic scan, I discovered that she had unusually high levels of mycotoxins from moulds in her body. Subsequently she moved out of the house she was renting and regained her health after a detox programme. Toxins from newly acquired furniture and products may also

be behind your health problems. Moving to a new country also means getting exposed to a new environment and perhaps a change in lifestyle. This applies not just to furniture but also household cleaning products and toiletries such as deodorants. I strongly suspect that the cause of your illness lies within your immediate surroundings. You should consider having a building specialist inspect your house to make sure that the damp proof course and other vital building requirements for your house are in order. You should also consider sticking to products especially cleaning and bathing products you have used in the past. It is possible that your symptoms are caused by completely different factors, and so you should have an extensive diagnostic check-up to accurately determine the cause of your health problems.

Q

I am a builder, and about a year ago I fell from a ladder. Luckily I got away with a few scratches on my leg and nothing more. The problem is that a few weeks ago I started having occasional pain on my left leg were I had the scratches, and sometimes it gets so painful that I have to take ibuprofen to ease it. I don’t have a recollection of any sort of injury to my neck, and I wonder if this pain could be due to the fall I had a year ago.

A

It is possible for an accident like yours to recur and cause pain even years after the initial accident. Sometimes injuries do not cause pain when they occur, but can trigger inflammatory reactions in the tissues surrounding the injury slowing causing degeneration and the formation of scar tissue. The gradual build-up of scar tissue can lead to the tightening of tendons, ligaments and in your case leg muscles causing pain long after the injury happened. You should visit the hospital to have an X-ray and possibly an

COMMON SOURCES OF TOXINS AROUND US The mattress you sleep on every night could be making you sick. That is because there is a good chance it is coated with a class of flame retardant chemicals known as PBDE (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) designed to slow down a fire and allow time to escape. These chemicals are also included in household items from consumer electronics to wire insulation to upholstery. PBDE’s have been linked to an array of medical problems including thyroid dysfunction, liver disease, permanent learning and memory impairment and behavioural problems especially in children. Such toxic compounds are literally all around us in walls, plywood cabinets, plastics, textiles, air fresheners, and couch cushions. These harmful substances include lead, PCB’s, dioxin, BPA (Bisphenol A), fluorine as well as chlorine used to disinfect water and swimming pools. In fact a recent study from the University of Cordoba in Spain found a group of harmful toxins known as DBP (Disinfection By-products) present in the urine of swimmers less than 30 minutes

DR MACHI MANNU’S ADVICE CLINIC Email your questions and comments to machimannu@gmail.com

after they emerged from the pool. Disinfection by-products are deadly toxins produced when chemicals such as chlorine, chloramine and chlorine dioxide used to purify swimming pools reacts with decaying organic matter contained in it. The Researchers in Spain recruited 49 participants including adults, children and pool cleaners and instructed them to swim or work for up to 30mins at indoor and outdoor chlorinated pools. Their urine samples after the swim showed the presence of a type of disinfection by-product known as HAA or Haloacetic acid which continued to appear 3 hours before they were fully excreted. The scientists suggested that the vast majority of the contact with HAAs was most likely caused by the volunteers swallowing small amounts of the pool water as they swam. However, inhalation and absorption through the skin clearly also created exposure, since not every subject actually entered a pool. Unsurprisingly, those

who swam stored up 4 times more HAA than those who simply worked by the pools. And children had higher levels of HAAs after taking a dip than the adults did, which makes sense since younger skin absorbs much faster. Another recently published study found that swimming in a chlorinated pool presented an unacceptable risk of cancer. The paper concluded that the risk of developing cancer from HAA was highest with skin exposure during swimming. Scientists now associate disinfection byproducts such as HAA to a number of serious health conditions such as congenital abnormalities, bladder and rectal cancer. The danger from chlorine also applies to our drinking water supply were it is added for purification purposes. However the quantity of chlorine present in drinking water has been continuously decreasing over the years as researchers shed more light on its toxic nature. Nevertheless, our drinking water supply is now known to

contain a variety of industrial and pharmaceutical chemicals including biologically active hormonal chemicals. Some of the common drugs found in drinking water include: Atenolol-used to treat heart diseases, Phenytoin- an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy, Estrone – blamed for causing gender changes in fish and Carbamazepine- a mood stabilizer used to treat bipolar disorders. Please join me next week to find out simple steps you can take to minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals. Contact Dr Machi Mannu for Full Body Diagnostic Scan and Therapy

MRI scan and other investigations to determine the state of your health especially the painful leg. I do not think you could have sustained a fracture when the incident occurred, but a confirmation with an X-ray is still necessary. If after the investigations, the problem is found to be localised in the muscles, you should consider seeing a chiropractor or a massage therapist for treatment.

Q

My mum who is 66, suffered from a heart attack 5 years ago, and has been in relative good health since then. Lately she has complained of shortness of breath, and she doesn’t feel as strong as she used to. Her GP says there is nothing to worry about since she is taking her medications and her blood pressure is normal. But my mum is still worried because she cannot exercise as she used to do even after her heart surgery. Do you think her heart may be failing again?

A

Hello, I do not have enough information regarding the type of heart surgery your mum had. Nevertheless I do not think your mum’s heart is failing, but perhaps weak. I am also not aware of the medications she is taking and would recommend the dietary supplement Ubiquinol if she is not already taking it. Ubiquinol is the active reduced form of the anti-oxidant nutrient Co-enzyme Q10 found in all the cells of the body for the production of energy especially in active organs such as the heart and kidneys. The level of Coenzyme Q 10 in the body starts to decrease about the age of 40 and is also reduced after severe stressful conditions such as surgery. Several clinical studies have demonstrated its effectiveness as a natural support for the heart and circulatory system. Supplementation with Co-enzyme Q 10 helps the heart produce energy, maintain fitness and control cholesterol and Blood Pressure levels. Please log into www.medb.es for more information about Ubiquinol or Coenzyme Q 10.

The rain in Spain Is beyond a soak WE'VE been on holiday again, spending two weeks near Estepona in the Costa del Sol, where we have a timeshare. When we were there two years ago, the heavens opened and it rained buckets every day. The dry river beds became torrents, roads flooded, some even being washed away. After a few days of it, we got so fed up we decided to cut our losses and head for home in Torrevieja. In the past we went to Ireland and it rained every day. Before that we went to Skye and, yes, you guessed it! Could we believe it, after three days on hols again, down came the rain - floods, etc, but thankfully not quite so bad as in Almeria and Murcia. Down south they haven't had any rain for six months, which is why there have been so many dreadful fires. We should have had our holiday two months earlier and made it rain sooner. Perhaps we should hire ourselves out as rain magnets! We'll let you know when we're planning our next hols, so you can avoid those weeks!

I IMAGINE many of you were as angry as I was to hear about the gang of Pakistani men who targeted white schoolgirls, plying them with drink and drugs and then virtually imprisoning them for use as sex objects. But what has happened since has made me just as angry - because it has been established that police and local councils were turning a blind eye to these sexgrooming gangs for almost a decade. It seems that police and council officials were desperate to cover up any racial link to the abuse of the girls - fearing racial tensions if it became public. A string of warnings, dating from 2000, were ignored by authorities, anxious to avoid allegations of racism against them. With a government with a hidden agenda of creating a multi-cultural Britain, and anyone raising any concerns being instantly branded a racist, allegations were apparently swept under the carpet. Among the alleged crimes for which no one was prosecuted were: * A 14-year-old girl being forced to perform sex acts on five men – four Pakistanis and an Iraqi Kurd asylum seeker; * A British Pakistani man was found in a car with a bottle of vodka and a 12-year-old. Both were arrested on suspicion of stealing the car. Police also found pornographic images of the girl on the 22-year-old’s phone; * A 14-year-old girl missing for a week was found under the influence of drugs in a car with a man 20 years older. They had had sex but he was arrested only for drug possession; * A 13-year-old girl was found drunk at 3am in a derelict house with a ‘large group of adult males’ who had plied her with vodka. She was arrested for a public order offence while the men walked away. According to previously confidential documents seen by The Times newspaper and now made public, police in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, found evidence of thousands of similar crimes and described ‘networks of Asian males exploiting young white females’. The groups were reported to have trafficked victims to cities including Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. Despite this, just two prosecutions of groups of men for sexual abuse have taken place in South Yorkshire since 1996.

Officialdom suggested the problems were not what the men were doing but because of the promiscuousness of the young girls. There are now robust measures in place to investigate exploitation of youngsters and to prosecute offenders. But, sadly, there's a generation of people who suffered badly because of failures by police, councils and a government hell bent on changing the cultural face of Britain. ANOTHER story which has emerged in Britain and no doubt will get you angry is that dozens of people working in the medical profession, including doctors, convicted of sex offences have been allowed to keep their jobs "because to sack them would breach their human rights". At least 31 male GPs, consultants and surgeons are still practising, even after having been convicted of assaulting women, being in possession of child pornography or having solicited prostitutes. Yes, another case of ethnic minorities being treated differently. The General Medical Council says it inquired about an automatic ban on doctors who are on the sex offenders register but "advice was obtained from a leading QC who concluded that an automatic bar, without exceptions, would not be compatible with human rights legislation". What the hell is going wrong in Britain to allow this? ONE bit of good news - at long last, we can get rid of Abu Hamza. The hook-handed hate preacher will be extradited to the US after his final appeal against extradition fails, even though he has made yet another legal attempt to delay. The eight-year legal farce cost UK taxpayers £1m but the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights brings the legal saga to an end. Hamza. is wanted by the US for plotting to set up a jihadi training camp in Oregon, conspiring to take Western hostages in Yemen and funding terrorism. Even the Queen is reported to have expressed concern that he has been allowed to remain so long in Britain. But America will know what to do with him - they won't get bogged down with years of soppy human-rights twaddle.. Three examples in my rant of how Britain has allowed itself to be exploited by minorities and authorities frightened witless to avoid accusations of racism. The result is that minorities have been able to enjoy different treatment to Brits. That's wrong, and it must stop. AND now for something a little less heavy. Why is it that the things that give people pleasure are those which are bad for you? Food, or too much of it, makes you fat and shortens your life. So does smoking and excessive alcohol. Now, it seems that sex is a life shortener - for men anyway. Scientists in Korea have been researching the longevity of eunuchs (castrated men) down the centuries, and have found that they lived up to 19 years longer than a normal "full-blooded" male. It's the sex hormones that cause men's lives to be shortened. Males who lost their reproductive organs through accident or choice, as with the eunuchs of the Korean Chosun dynasty from 1392, often lived into their 90s or even past 100. There you have it chaps - the choice is yours!

RICHARD CAVENDER

Bluemoon Solutions www.bluemoonsolutions.es

BlueMoon Solutions is the computer and IT services company on the Costa Blanca, they provide quality computer services at realistic prices and specialise in working with home users and small businesses.

Richard moved to Spain seven years ago having left his management background behind in the UK and decided to use his IT skills to help home users and small businesses with their PC problems. Now a relaxed 'computer man' he is out and about in the Spanish sun every day, making house and shop calls and using his vast experience and qualifications to (usually) sort out the problem there and then. Computers are his hobby as well as his work so don’t be surprised to get an answer to your email in the early hours!

ADVICE: Bob was still having problems with Internet ADVICE: Kenneth wanted to translate documents he had Explorer crashing although less often! scanned but was having problems. Hi Richard, thanks for your answer regarding my Internet problem. I did as instructed and turned off all the add on’s and then gradually reintroduced then. The web pages now appeared to operate without any problem but videos were not available when the Adobe flash player was disabled. However, the internet problem came back when I enabled flash player to operate. I then uninstalled flash player and re-installed it to ensure I had the latest version plus I ran a full AVG and Malware bytes scan. The problem is still there but now happens less frequently. Any other suggestion I might try. Thanks for your help. Bob.

Q

Hi Bob, I’m glad the assistance we gave you helped you to track down the problem. With regards to Adobe Flash player, obviously it’s quite a well-used Add-On so, as you say, it’s not something that you would want to permanently disable as this would affect your online experience. It sounds to me like there is a problem with the installation of Adobe Flash player that you have or with Internet Explorer, so I would try these additional things. First run Windows update and ensure that you have all the critical and recommended updates installed – maybe an out of date one is affecting your Flash Player. Secondly if you find that is not the case then use the “Uninstall Flash Player” software to fully remove the current installation, following the instructions carefully, once completed restart your computer and install the latest version of Flash Player from the Adobe website. I hope this helps sort out your problem. You can get the software at the following address http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Hello Richard please can you tell me how to scan a document and translate it with one of the free downloads from the internet. I have tried and failed on numerous occasions to carry out this task. First I scan a Spanish document which automatically goes into my documents file. I then try to copy and paste into the translator but nothing happens, what am I doing wrong your advice is appreciated. The documents are scanned as either .TIFF or .PDF format, does this matter? Regards, Kenneth

Q A

Hi Kenneth, the issue here is that translation software is not able to “read” pictures and the .TIFF and .PDF scans that you are doing are effectively just that – pictures. What you need to try to do is use some OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to convert the pictures you are scanning into text that can be read by the translation software, the series of steps would be… 1. Scan the document as an “image” 2. Select the area of text that you are interested in (rather than the whole document that might include addresses etc that don’t need to be translated) 3. OCR the text you are interested in, converting it from a picture to editable text 4. Copy and paste that text into your preferred translation website and translate it from Spanish to English It’s likely that you would have had OCR software installed as part of your scanner set up, you just need to find it and use it – if not then there are free OCR programs that you can download from the Internet.

ADVICE: Paul was having problems clicking on email links on some websites.

Q A

Hola Richard, when I click on an email address on a website I get the message "default mail client not properly installed". I have been into default programs /set default programs etc. without any success. There is no tools menu I could find on Google to try. Any help appreciated. Paul

Hi Paul, the issue here is that the website designer has decided not to use the more common contact us form in their website construction, rather they have just used a clickable form of their email address. This is becoming more and more of an issue because it pre-supposes that the user has an email program installed on their computer and increasingly nowadays many of us use online email systems like Gmail or Hotmail where not program resides on your computer, we just use a web browser to access our emails. This is an issue because by clicking on the email link you are instructing your computer to launch its "default" email program (or client) and in this case you don’t have one hence the error. In circumstances like this you would have to copy the email address shown on the website, go into your normal email online and paste it into a new email - hope this helps explain things

Icing on the cake is so sweet for Age Concern

MORE than 40 people enjoyed a traditional afternoon tea at the El Mirador in Eagles Nest in aid of Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur. The idea for a regular fundraising event came after the success of the Ascot Ladies’ Day event in June and will become a monthly feature. The cakes are all provided by

local resident Juanita, and the pastries and sandwiches by El Mirador. Justine, owner of El Mirador, plans to hold an afternoon tea on the last Wednesday of every month and if other charities would like to utilise the event as a fundraising activity, they are welcome to contact her on 667 979 173.

A raffle was held, with prizes donated by the bar and other local businesses, and the proceeds donated to Age Concern. Dave and Ann Wade even chose the event to celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary, with their very own table for two complete with heartshaped cakes and biscuits.

CHAMPS SHOW THEIR GLASS CASAS MANUEL Summer Petanca League champions Amigos Belgas celebrate their success after receiving a large glass vase from sponsors Casa Manuel. The League Cup Final was won last week by Laguna Vista

Diablos, who beat Ampolas in a nailbiting contest at Restaurante El Altos de Dolores in La Mata. The winning team consisted of Ray, Eileen, Aide, Dot, Derek, John R, Victor, Russell and John H.

MABS Cancer Support Group in Murcia has received a €600 boost from La Manga Cricket Club – courtesy of the club’s a n n u a l Twenty/Twenty competition. Two UK and two Spanish teams contested the trophy and, at the end of three days of fiercely competitive cricket, it was the UK Asians who claimed victory, downing La Manga in the final. The first two games on Friday morning matched Andalucia against the UK Asians and Chorleywood against the hosts. Andalucia’s team included the three Barratt brothers and the captain of the Combined Colleges CC. UK Asians, past winners of the competition, again looked a formidable combination on

paper, with players coming from several regions, including Bristol, Derby and London, and they proved way too strong for the Southern Spanish side. A sports dinner for the cricketers at the Hotel Las Lomas was addressed by former England women’s captain Baroness Rachel Heyhoe-Flint OBE DL, a regular visitor to La Manga. The second speaker was former Kent and Northants player John Dye, who now resides in Spain and is chairman of the Spanish League.

Officials of La Manga Cricket Club presented a cheque for €600 to MABS Murcia director Lyn Baines, raised from raffles and sales of kit donated by the ‘Barmy Army’. Next up is the Lady Taverners’ 20/20 Charity Cricket To u r n a m e n t over the weekend of 12-15 October. Full details can be found on the MABS website or by calling Dave Moore on 658 626 341.

UK HEADLINES

MISSING APRIL, THE PRINCESS OF WHEELS CAREFREE April Jones plays happily on her beloved pink bike — at the spot where she was snatched. The five-year-old — who has cerebral palsy — was still missing last night (Thursday) after being lured into a vehicle near her home in Machynlleth, Mid Wales, on Monday. Distraught mum Coral, 40, broke down as she begged: “Please, please, help find her.” Police released a photo of arrested suspect Mark Bridger, 46, and his Land Rover. Police have been given until 5pm today (Friday) to question Mark Bridger about the disappearance of five-year-old April. April will be in desperate need of medication that she is supposed to take daily for health problems, her godmother said. Worried Mair Raftree revealed that April — still missing following her abduction on Monday evening — suffers from mild cerebral palsy. She also has irritable bowel syndrome and has to endure regular trips to hospital, with doctors constantly changing her pills. Mair, 41, said of April’s cerebral palsy: “She was diagnosed with the condition when she was small. “This is the third day she’s away from home and she’s only little. “She needs medication for her health problems and without it she will be in pain. “She goes to the hospital a lot and her mum Coral tells me that they are always changing her medication. If she doesn’t have her medication, she is in pain.” Mum-of-two Mair added: “Sometimes her legs give way and doctors did say she may need an op. “But as she has got older it seems to be getting better. “I am so scared for her and I desperately want her home.” Witnesses have told how they saw April being lured into a vehicle as she rode her bike in Machynlleth at about 7.30pm on Monday. Police revealed they had carried out at least two interviews with dad of six Bridger, a family friend who is in custody following his arrest on suspicion of abduction.

Jets ready to hook Hamza off for US handover TWO chartered jets are already on stand-by to take hate preacher Abu Hamza and four other terror suspects to the US, it was revealed yesterday. The hook-handed cleric, who faces terror charges in America, will be handed over to US officials at a UK airport and escorted across the Atlantic by armed cops. A source said: “The transfer will take place on the tarmac. The operation is being overseen by the US Justice Department. The cost will be picked up by the US.” The plans are set despite Hamza’s lawyers arguing the 54-year-old is unfit to face trial. Alun Jones QC yesterday told the High Court in London that he has depression, inability to concentrate and shortterm memory loss and requires medical tests. The court will give its ruling at a later date.

Pressure on BBC over Savile THE former boss of Radio 1 KNEW of accusations about Jimmy Savile and child sex abuse as long ago as 1973. Worried station controller Douglas Muggeridge asked his press officer Rodney Collins if newspapers were planning to expose their star DJ. Collins said Wednesday: “He had not received a letter or anything official, but

he had picked up a rumour from somewhere that Jimmy Savile was involved with underage girls.” Collins said he reported back that papers were not planning to publish any stories — and the matter was not mentioned again. But he added: “The BBC should now, having first of all said they knew nothing about this, co-operate with the police.

“If anyone working there at the time had some knowledge of this they should put their hands up.” Collins believes Muggeridge, who died in 1985, and the then BBC Radio managing director Ian Trethowan both knew of the rumours but found no evidence. Wednesday night a Beeb spokesman said: “The BBC has conducted searches of

its files and has not found any written record of misconduct or allegations of misconduct by Jimmy Savile during his time at the BBC.” Meanwhile, the corporation was blasted by a woman who told Newsnight investigators she saw pop perv Gary Glitter in Savile’s dressing room as a girl was abused.

CLARKSON IN INSURANCE FIRMS OFCOM SLAP IN 225m PROBE TOP GEAR host Jeremy Clarkson breached BBC guidelines by comparing a Japanese car to people with growths on their faces. A report by the the BBC Trust’s editorial standards committee (ESC) found he 'strayed into an o ff e n s i v e stereotypical assumption' with the scripted remarks during an episode of the hit motoring show. A member of the public complained about the 'offensive' remarks after Clarkson likened the shape of a Prius campervan to someone with 'a growth on their face' and referred to it as the 'elephant car.'

He also described it as 'not a car that you could talk to at a party unless you were looking at something else.' The ESC said the show’s audience enjoyed the presenters’ 'sometimes contro-

versial and forthright views' but ruled this remark 'played on a stereotypically negative reaction to facial disfigurement.' It said it 'strayed into an

offensive stereotypical assumption' and was 'not editorially justified.' The report stated: “The committee accepted that the remark was exaggerated for comic effect, but believed that some viewers may find this particular remark, taken within the whole context of the exchange, to be a purposeless stereotype. 'The committee concluded that this programme was in breach of the guidelines on harm and offence as the exchanges about facial disfigurement were not editorially justified and did not meet generally accepted standards in the context of their portrayal of a disability.' It upheld the complaint.

Motor insurance firms are to face a full-scale investigation by competition watchdogs over a rip-off racket costing motorists £225million a year and adding £10 to every policy. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) today referred the industry to the Competition Commission after discovering that drivers had little control over the way in which repairs were carried out and replacement vehicles provided. Such practices were ramping up premiums. British drivers paying record premiums averaging more than £1,000 a year are victims of a ‘dysfunctional‘ motor insurance market worth nearly £10billion a year. Costs are being artificially inflated by a ‘merry go round' of controversial ‘referral payments’, excessively expensive repair bills, and unnecessarily high replacement car-hire car charges. MPs have even described some of the practices complained of as bordering on ‘bribery.' The OFT says there is clear evidence of the

industry - worth an estimated £9.4billion in the UK - rigging the market to prevent proper competition to the detriment of UK motorists. It has found evidence of premiums paid by drivers being ramped up outrageously through spiralling referral fees. It added that insurers whose driver customers are to blame for a crash have little control over the way in which repairs are carried out. As a result it has decided to refer the issue upwards for investigation by the Competition Commission which has powers to take enforcement action and levy hefty fines. The OFT said there was ‘no quick fix’ to the problems identified and that further investigation was needed. The commission now has up to two years to report its findings. The OFT had decided provisionally in May to refer the industry to the Competition Commission pending further evidence after concluding: ’On the basis of the evidence collects, the OFT has

reasonable grounds to suspect there are features of the private motor insurance market that prevent, restrict, or distort competition.’ Clive Maxwell, chief executive of the OFT, said: ‘Competition appears not to be working effectively in the private motor insurance market. ‘The insurers of at-fault drivers appear to have little control over the bills they must pay, and this may be leading to higher costs for them and ultimately higher premiums for motorists.’ In May, the OFT said the motor insurance market was ‘dysfunctional’, with signs that insurers of drivers who are ‘at fault’ are being taken advantage of by insurers of drivers who are not at fault and by others involved in providing repairs and courtesy cars. Watchdogs took evidence suggesting that this is inflating the cost of providing replacement vehicles by an average of £560 a time, while the cost of repairs was £155 more.

The driver of this supercar would probably rather be ragging it around a racetrack or attracting admiring glances while cruising down some of London's most glamorous streets. But this fluorescent orange Ferrari won't be going very far at all for the time being - although it still may demand some attention. The £200,000 vehicle, which has a top speed of 208mph and can go from 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds, is being used to highlight a major campaign by police to target uninsured motorists. The 28-year-old owner of the FF model has not yet claimed the car back after it was seized in South Kensington. The car, which has been placed alongside an £18,000 Mercedes belonging to a dis-

qualified driver, has the phrase 'uninsured vehicle seized by police' plastered on its windscreen. The display comes on the 11th day of action in the campaign - dubbed Operation Cubo - which has so far seized a total of nearly 37,000 uninsured vehicles

since it began in October last year. By Thursday, a total of 300 vehicles were seized and 30 arrests made for various offences including driving while disqualified, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of class A drugs.

TOYOTA GOES A TAD BOLDER Toyota has sent its British-built family car to boot camp. The result is a toned-up, better performing model. The new Auris will be unveiled at next month’s Paris Motor Show in a bid to challenge rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The hatchback has bolder styling and sleeker looks — including a more distinctive grille — to counter criticisms that the current model lacks character. It’s longer and sits lower than its predecessor, is 40kg lighter and 10 per cent ‘stiffer’ to improve performance and economy. There’s more room in the boot, too. Cabin quality has been

upgraded with tactile surfaces, a satin silver finish on

air vents and trim, a leather-trimmed dash, baseballstitched nappa leather on the steering wheel, and a soft-touch instrument panel. All variants — petrol, diesel and petrolelectric hybrid — will be built at Toyota’s factory at Burnaston, Derbys, where £100 million will be invested.

TRELI ON THE TELLY SOB-SMACKED!

with ALEX TRELINSKI DYING siblings; single parents wanting to move away from a grotty council estate; people in jobs that they don’t want to do; and an endless stream of tears. I’m not talking about a social documentary on Channel Four, but last weekend’s X Factor ‘Judge’s Houses’ shows on ITV1. It was top-draw stuff with all the usual clichés about how hard the judges found it to make their choices. And it seemingly made Chinese water torture a better option for some of the contenders. It’s easily the best collection of finalists in the show’s history, but we got the odd duff selection like the totally over the top Rylan Clark. God knows what he’d have done if he hadn’t been put through, as his positive reaction led to hysteria of a level I haven’t witnessed since the death of Princess Diana. It

A labour of blub for the X Factor judges may all be an old formula now, but The X Factor knows how to deliver, and with so many good acts, the live shows are going to be miles better than last year’s damp squibs. I must admit my contact lenses got some useful lubrication with Saturday’s series end of Dr Who on BBC1. We knew it was going to be an emotional farewell for Amy and Rory, and it was brilliantly done in an episode set in New York, which clearly had a lot of money thrown at it. They’ve been two great companions for the old Time Lord, and with the return of the Whispering Angels, it was a creepy and suspenseful series finale. My only criticism is that it really warranted a double episode as everything went along at a breakneck pace, but well done to everybody as we get ready for next year’s 50th anniversary and of course the Christmas Special.

ITV1’s Downton Abbey continues to enchant me as the third series develops on Sundays. Didn’t you just know that poor old Edith would get jilted at the altar in the latest episode? And the award-winning Dame Maggie Smith continues to steal the

show with her wonderfully scripted one-liners. I’m just bemused by why some people want to knock the show at every opportunity. It’s the usual British disease of criticising a wonderful piece of escapism that has become a massive inter-

national success, including screenings on Spain’s Antena 3. There’s only been one problem, and that’s the limited appearances of Brendan Coyle as Bates, because he’s behind bars for allegedly murdering his wife. Memo to creator and writer Julian Fellowes: - Get him released ASAP as the programme’s not the same without him featuring more prominently. Jimmy Savile’s abuse of teenage girls was an open secret in the corridors of the BBC Television Centre, yet the Beeb did nothing about it. I heard some stories myself when I worked there, but a year after his death, it’s ITV1 who have done something about it. Last Wednesday their new documentary series, called appropriately enough, Exposure, focused on Savile’s disgusting behaviour, a lot of which took place

in his Rolls Royce, giving a new meaning to his information films which implored us to “Clunk Click” on every trip. Shame as well on the BBC, who dropped a Newsnight investigation on the subject last year, mainly because it would have shown them in a very poor light. Was I totally wrong over Citizen Khan? The BBC have ordered a second series, and I couldn’t bring myself to watch it again after a woeful first show. Have I missed anything, or would the programme have been recommissioned if it had been an all-white cast? Sky’s golf coverage is superb. They did complete justice to the incredible European comeback to retain the Ryder Cup, after the Americans thought they had it on their mantelpiece. The only downside was the irritating commercial breaks, which were inherited from American TV, and didn’t happen two years ago when Sky hosted the coverage at Celtic Manor. The fantastic Homeland is back this Sunday on Channel Four. What more can I say?

Greenside Gossip IVIE DAVIES takes a weekly look at the golf scene - golfdavies@gmail.com

SEV-SATIONAL! Ballesteros spirit the miracle remedy for Europe’s no-hopers

IT’S no secret that Team Europe was playing this 39th Ryder Cup for one of the greatest golfers of all time. The legendary Seve Ballesteros’s image was emblazoned on the players’ golf bags and their clothing and his spirit were in their hearts. Some of the European players even said they felt Seve was with them throughout the week. This was still one hell of a Ryder Cup. Perfect weather, enormous crowds providing an ideal competitive atmosphere, some incredible play every day, which takes me to my highlights for those who went above and beyond … and too far below. MAN OF THE MATCH: Ian Poulter turns golf into an emotional contact sport, and he’s the only one wearing padding. Undefeated in four matches, the unbelievable Saturday evening finish. This might be the most significant Ryder Cup performance ever.

ALL OURS: Ian Poulter celebrates

Sharpest Dagger: Justin Rose’s 35-foot birdie putt at the 17th on Sunday. After Phil Mickelson almost holed his chip from behind the green, Rose buried the bomb to square the match, which he won on the 18th. It was the only birdie on the 17th all day and the biggest momentum-shifter on an afternoon that turned into a six-hour seesaw ride. Biggest disappointment: Steve Stricker finished 0-4 and struggled to help Tiger Woods in all three of their matches together. Tiger pulled the pair out of trouble in both of their fourball tilts, but when Stricker had half a dozen chances to make a positive difference, he didn’t. Most Unlikely to succeed (but did): Hey, give Martin Kaymer credit. Jose Maria Olazabal tried to hide him in the 11th slot of the Euro singles lineup, where he was lucky to draw Stricker, but Kaymer shot 2 under and clinched the Cup with a six-footer for par at the 18th. The United States lost the Ryder Cup to Europe 14.5 to 13.5 in a fashion so fantastic; golf fans will be talking about the epic 2012 collapse for generations. The US team, captained by Davis Love III, headed into Sunday's singles matches up 10-6 after dominating the competition Friday and Saturday. But everything seemed to change late Saturday evening when, trailing 10-4, Europe won two extremely important points in the final two matches, led by undefeated Poulter and his maniacal focus. Still, the United States habitually dominates singles play, and thus had the Cup firmly within their grasp heading into singles matches. With little else to worry about, the biggest story of the morning was Davis Love III putting Tiger Woods, point-less in three sessions on Friday and Saturday, last in the line-up of 12 matches to close out Sunday. Woods was the anchor for a team that only needed four-and-a-half points in the preceding 11 matches, certain to be a non-factor for the Americans. This was going to be about how young stars like Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker are becoming the

TITTER ON THE TEE SAM and Harry are playing one day. On the first hole, Sam hits a wicked slice onto the adjoining fairway. The ball hits another player right between the eyes and he drops to the ground. Sam and Harry rush over to the prostrate man and find him unconscious with the ball lying on the ground between his legs. Sam screams, "Oh my God, what should I do?" Harry replies; "Don't move him. If you leave him there he becomes an immovable obstruction and, according to the rules, you are allowed a drop two club-lengths away."

new faces of American golf. Well, Bradley, Watson, Simpson and Snedeker all lost their matches early on Sunday, making it all the more likely that Woods would, in fact, be needed. It became rather ironic when Woods wasn't actually needed, as Captain Love could not have known his troops would collapse so badly. Love obviously tried to hide Steve Stricker by putting him in the second-to-last match, hoping it would not come down to matches that far into the afternoon. But it did. With Stricker's struggles all weekend and Jim Furyk's up-and-down play, two of Love's most controversial captain's picks were making him look foolish. Furyk missed putts he needed to beat Sergio Garcia, while Stricker all but handed his match to a struggling Martin Kaymer with his inconsistent play. It wasn't just the captain's picks who lost on Sunday. Mickelson played well enough, but was bettered by Rose, who sank three straight birdies to come from behind and steal a point. While Dufner handled his match over Peter Hanson—the match Love told American TV he expected to be the clincher when he planned out the day—the U.S. player behind him, Matt Kuchar, was easily beaten by Lee Westwood. The United States entered the final day needing just fourand-a-half points and managed wins from Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson, Jason Dufner and that's it. When something like the Miracle at Medinah happens in sport, the immediate reaction is to point fingers and assign blame. Was it Woods? Was it Stricker or Furyk? Was it Davis Love bungling the pairings? Was it Mickelson's inability to close out Rose or Watson's poor start in the first match on Sunday? Was it the last Saturday afternoon losses that started the spiral? Was it resting Bradley and Mickelson on Saturday— they were red-hot after winning 7&6 on Saturday morning— in favour of keeping Stricker and Woods together? Was it the ghost of Seve Ballesteros having a direct hand in the result while watching from above? Team captain Jose Maria Olazabal said: "Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor for this event, for the European side, and last night when we were having that meeting, I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing, and I think they did.’’

HEADLINE HUGHES SAN Javier GS swung into October with a two-ball Texas Scramble at Hacienda Riquelme, won by father and son team Kevin and Simon Hughes with a net 66.5. Second place was decided on countback, Dave Williams and Paul (Popman) Newman taking the honours from Paul Matthews and Ian (Bubba) Smith after both pairs finished on 69.0. Dave Archer and Les Doherty won three of the four Nearest to Pin prizes, the final one going to Kevin Hughes.

Flying start for San Javier

The Murcia Matchplay Golf League looks set for an exciting season following he addition of four new teams. A closely fought opening round at Las Ramblas saw San Javier beat Seirra 33-19, while the SP Crew edged out Marinasol from Cabo Roig 30-24, Club 25 pipped Hacienda 25-21 and La Manga eased home 27-21 against Roco-Juna . Celt Club v La Zenia will take place at a later date.

IS MANCINI A SPECIAL ONE? TELL IT TO THE MOURINHOS! ROBERTO MANCINI - real McCoy or rogue Mourinho? Or, if you’ve got your teeth in - should the sheik’s shekels ensure success? I believe my questions are valid, whichever way you look at it, because, as we all know... money is the root of all evil. There are obviously no purse strings to worry about at the Etihad. If our Roberto wants someone, he seems able to buy him regardless of price – and pay him the earth.

Let’s have a joke and take an Englishman, Welshman and a Scotsman –three of the current crop of British managers who are currently doing a reasonable job in the Premiership. Step up Alan Pardew, Tony Pulis, and arguably the best as we speak, David Moyes. So, not the $64,000 question - it's the £488million one. What could you do with that sort of cash, lads? With that money would any of you three manage to 'buy' the league title

that Mancini’s men just – and I mean just – nicked so dramatically in May, when they scrambled into the guard’s van as the last train for the coast pulled out? I know, I know... I’m being very hard and mean-spirited to all those poor souls who have supported Manchester City through thick and thin for all those barren years when those awfully-successful and loud, noisy neighbours down the road at Old Trafford were winning everything in sight. At long, long last, the Blues Boys bagged it – even if most of their mercenaries I mean players - were overpaid, over the top and over here. No, I don’t really begrudge the club its success; indeed my own son-inlaw is a die-hard City man, who has successfully converted my daughter to the cause (well, it’s better than the Moonies) plus both my grandsons, who when they cut themselves bleed light blue. Of course, all this is nothing new. In 2004 a Russian oil tycoon named Roman Abramovich was bored and wanted a new toy to play with, so he bought Chelsea. But there was one difference, which at the time, I for one, didn’t appreciate. The new owner appointed one Jose Mourinho as his manager - and he WAS the Special One, the messiah he claimed to be (Brian

Clough and Muhammad Ali come to mind). The Portuguese bought wisely with the millions provided and delivered the goods – well, most of them. But after three highly-successful seasons, Mourinho fell out with the never-toointerested, non-football-man owner and packed his bags. Firstly the Special One went to Italy and Inter Milan, where he won everything and now he’s moved on to manage the great-but-ailing Real Madrid. Here in Iberian paradise, he did the impossible last season and took the Spanish La Liga crown back from Barcelona. So I personally acknowledge Mourinho is special, even though I didn’t when he arrived at Stamford Bridge. But is Signor Mancini made of the same stuff? Remember when he breezed into town nearly three years ago, looking like an Italian gigolo, just off steering a Venetian gondola? He swapped the striped shirt for the light blue and white scarf, instantly endeared himself to the locals and was devastatingly diego charm personified. But, like every Prime Minister, he’s aged by the minute ever since, and become crabbier in public – I s'pose it goes with the job. By all accounts he was quite an influence as a player at Sampdoria where he played over 550 times, often holding impromptu half-time dressing room talks, even though he wasn’t the manager or coach. Mancini holds 36 caps for Italy, and

has managed at Fiorentina, Lazio and the great Inter Milan before being sacked in 2008 because of poor progress in the UEFA league. The Italian didn’t work again until the winter of 2009 when he floated into Manchester, following the departure of the sourfaced/once-a-great-player Mark Hughes, now currently floundering with QPR (and yes, I know Hughesy had a hand in spending some of the spondulicks too, before he was pushed). So, in summary: yes, Mancini did it last year – just - and seems to think he can do it again this time. But can he? Well, to provide some unfair help there's apparently much more mazooma

from where the last lot came from and Roberto says he’s up for spending some more. After all, Christmas is just round the corner – for some. So he should be able to manage it, though Alex, Arsene, another Italian also called Roberto, plus those other lads I mentioned above, and a few more will have a say in it. But is it fair to all those others, you having all that money, Roberto? Because unless you do deliver, amigo, there are going to be a lot of people – me included - who will say you just bought temporary success last time. And there are several very hungry Premiership clubs who will stop at nothing to prevent you doing it again!

Torry banking on the Koeman touch MONTE ZOOM TO TOP

TORREVIEJA are rooted to the seven point mark after an unjust defeat at Denia where they succumbed to an 85th minute goal when Manu Amores gifted the ball away in midfield. Denia took full advantage, sweeping it out to the left wing where Borja lost no time in crossing to Roberto who volleyed into the corner of the net. Torry were marginally the better side but with only one point from the last four games, the alarm bells are sounding loud at the Vicente Garcia. Torry will seek to redeem their already tarnished reputation on Sunday with the debut of 25-year-old Koeman, who signed for the club last week. He has been training with the sqaud since the middle of September and is match fit. Koeman scored nine goals to help Catarroja to the championship last term

and is now reunited with his former colleague, Ernesto. Also likely to play is leftback Javi Rosa, who joined the club on Monday night to replace Josemi, having previous played for La Nucia and 2B side Caravaca. Ernesto played the second half at Denia and despite not being fully fit, soon became lynchpin of a Torry attack that should have won the match. Ernesto himself had a glorious chance to score but scuffed it wide with his weaker right foot. Torry kick-off at 5pm this Sunday against fourth-placed Saguntino, who held league leaders Novelda to a draw last weekend. The game starts at 5pm to ensure all fans are able to be home in good time to watch "El Clasico" on TV. Before that, Torry hope to resume winning ways and reignite their already faltering season. CD MONTESINOS 4 CALLOSA DEPORTIVA 1

TWO stylish goals from last season´s top scorer Edu helped unbeaten Monte go joint top of the division. A penalty apiece from Victor and Andres completed the scoring in a deserved success. But the game certainly did not start smoothly for the home side, who went behind early on to a well organised and willing Callosa side. But stunning finishes from Edu in the 38th and 45th minute turned the scores around before half time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Chulo ran into the area only to be brought down for a penalty which Victor converted at the second attempt. And eight minutes later, Andres added another from the spot after Victor had been brought down. It is certainly a decent start to the season for CD Montesinos although they still look a few players short if the are to make a full blown challenge at promotion, especially in defence. CD Montesinos are away at Torrevieja CF this week,

day and time to be confirmed . Check our website at www.cdmontesinos.com or contact us via email at t h e f u l l m o n t e 2 0 11 @ h o t mail.com or by telephone on 637869602.

HOT TOTT! 48

Friday, October 5, 2012

23 years of Spurs hurt, but it’s all white now PREMIERSHIP performance of the week goes to Tottenham, who put a 23-year losing hoodoo behind them at Old Trafford (Gary Lineker of MOTD fame scored for Spurs last time they won there). They embarrassed the great Manchester United at home, winning 3-2 with goals from Jan Vertongen, the superb Gareth Bale and, finally, new boy and great-buy-fromFulham Clint Dempsey. United’s two came from Nani and Shinji Kawaga. That win puts Tottenham fifth and will take some of the pressure off Andre Villas-Boas. Now Spurs can look forward to a visit to bemused-ofBirmingham, namely Aston Villa, where there's talk of trouble between hot-striker Darren Bent and new nervy boss Paul Lambert. United stay third, and will be pleased that Wayne Rooney’s back. He came on as substitute and looked sharp. Mind you, he’ll need to be at St James Park against exhilarating Newcastle (see below). ‘Ere, I thought that there Steve Bould was sorting out the Arsenal’s defence - like when they was ‘Boring Arsenal’ back in the nineties? Well, from what I saw last Saturday he needs to do some more work on the project. Fernando Torres looks to be getting back to his awesome best by poaching the first goal in fine style. That put table-toppers Chelsea on their way at The Emirates, although Gervinho put the Gunners back level by half time. Our

John McGregor reports

Steve would not have been pleased as all the home defence watched Juan Mata’s innocent-looking free kick sail through unchallenged for the second-half winner to keep Chelsea top. Arsenal keep it Capital again this Saturday in the evening game at West Ham (hey, big Andy Carroll's back, Steve - tell the Gunners defence. Chelsea, meanwhile, aim to stay top by beating down-in-the dumps Norwich at The Bridge. Shouldn’t be too difficult bouncing-back Liverpool made it look easy with five goals on Saturday at Carrow Road, helped by a Luis Suarez hat-trick. Didn't he do the same stunt there last year? (Leave out the diving, Luis luv - you don't need it). That win gives big Brendan Rodgers a bit of breathing space and boyo, did he need it... The Toffees stormed up to second place, coming from behind to overhaul newbies Southampton 3-1. Returning-from injury Nikica Jelavic starred with two of the Everton goals, that’s ten from his last 13 games. Fellaini the Fantastic was everywhere, still the main man for Everton this season. A short trip to in-troublebut-unpredictable Wigan on Sunday is next for David Moyes’ men. I’m personally delighted to see players sent straight off for dangerous studs-up challenges, and I applaud those referees who dish it out. Same goes for the divers, some of them should be getting lessons from that nice lad Tom Daley, now he's won an Olympic medal. You listening Ivanovich, Suarez, Nani? There's plenty more. It’s a... erm...foreign trait . It isn't taught on UK coaching courses! Dimitar Berbatov-less Fulham lost at home for the first time this season, but only to the late, late show

that Man City excel in. The winner came from substitute Edin Dzeko after Sergio Aguerro had equalised Fulham’s first-half penalty. You want excitement in a game ? Great goals? Reading and Newcastle had the lot in a pulsating 2 – 2 draw. Swansea v Reading looks a six-pointer down among the lower reaches - my money’s on Reading, they played a blinder against the Magpies. Bottomplaced QPR are suffering, miserable Mark Hughes cursing as they went down 2 -1 on Monday against West Ham. Although West Brom couldn't beat Villa last Sunday, it ended 1 -1 with a late Villa equaliser from Darren Bent. The Baggies will want to keep QPR down in the relegation zone and stay up with the big boys by winning at The Hawthorns. Saddo Hughes has just got the dreaded vote of confidence from the chairman – we all know what that means! In the changeable Championship is the cream rising to the top, as the sediment slowly sinks? Cardiff have bounced back to lead the table with 19 points from lively Leicester on 18, Brighton with 17 and Blackpool, Wolves and Crystal Palace all on 16. What a season this is going to be... Aqui en Espana, Barcelona still lead La Liga with maximum points after six games from Athletic Madrid, Malaga, Seville and Majorca. But Real Madrid have woken up after a dozy start and are now sixth and climbing. In the second division, 2A, our local lads Elche proudly top the table by two points from Villarreal: the Illicitanos are unbeaten in seven games, six wins and a draw.
