rom kitchens to car servicing, colourmatched paints, carpets, catering and even a climbing wall, Kendal’s industrial estates and business parks are home to dozens of specialist and niche firms that the town can be proud of.
Some of Kendal’s best-kept secrets and most experienced tradespeople are tucked away on the outskirts of town at locations like:

If joining the PTA at your child’s school conjures up thoughts of long and dreary committee meetings, then things couldn’t be more different.
money for activities, equipment and outings that couldn’t otherwise be met by the school budget.
Being part of the Parent Teacher Association can be one of the most rewarding ways of enriching everyday school life for your child and their classmates, whether it’s raising money for a new wildlife garden or helping with the cost of a trip to the theatre.
Being on the PTA gives you the chance to speak up and have your say in how the funds are raised and where you think it would be best spent – from football kit to computers, new books, school trips and holidays, seeds for the vegetable garden or art supplies.
It’s also a fantastic way of getting to know other mums, dads, grandparents and school staff, finding out what’s happening and making new friends, especially if you’ve recently moved to the area. These days PTAs are often known as the Friends of … School to reflect their relaxed, informal feel and the fact that they attract so much support from the wider community. Meetings often take place over a social drink, with members coming together for the benefit of the school to look at ways of raising
Everyone brings their own special talents to the PTA and it’s a rewarding way of putting your skills to good use – that could be baking for the cake stall, looking after the finances, organising the school disco or selling raffle tickets at the summer fete. Planning fun events and social get-togethers that the whole family can attend is a fantastic way of bringing the school together. And, by getting involved, you’ll be showing your child how much you value their education – a positive message that could well rub off on them, too, reaping rewards for the future.

Dance your way to confident and happy children
A
sk any parent whose child attends dance or drama classes and they’ll tell you it’s about so much more than wearing a tutu or learning how to perform on stage.
From ballet to tap, contemporary to jazz, there are so many different kinds of dance to explore, as well as stage schools and theatre groups with highly experienced teachers who will help young people to appreciate and love the arts.
Seeing their children blossom and grow in confidence is one of the main reasons why mums and dads introduce their children to the arts, as well as encouraging them to keep fit while having fun and making new friends.
Dance and drama are fantastic for helping children and teens to explore their creativity, discover what they love doing best and learn to express themselves and their emotions freely and maturely.
Research suggests that youngsters who enjoy dancing or acting spend far less time sitting at the computer and generally lead more balanced lifestyles.
Improved posture and muscle strength, better balance and coordination are just some of the benefits, as well as gaining the confidence to speak in public or perform in front of an audience – valuable skills for life. Youngsters who are quiet and shy can be helped to find their voice and make new friendships. Learning to dance or perform can also be a welcome distraction from any worries as well as giving an outlet for the imagination. Children learn to listen, to be patient as they practice new techniques, and to be proud of their success as they put on a performance or take part in the end-of-term show. Meanwhile, for mums and dads, watching their youngsters’ confidence and happiness soar makes it all worthwhile.

Remember the days when children’s parties consisted of balloons, birthday cake and a good old-fashioned game of pass the parcel? Somewhere along the way, birthday bashes became a little more complicated – not to mention expensive – but parents can breathe a sigh of relief because simpler celebrations are firmly back in fashion. Here are all the ideas you need for hosting a hassle-free party at home, and some super suggestions if you’d much rather leave the planning and tidying up to someone else.
Invites... There’s a lot to be said for a smaller party, and youngsters will probably find this much less daunting. Stick to best friends and close family, and send out your invites two or three weeks before – email and text are perfectly acceptable these days.
Venue...
Keeping things simple is the key if you’re having the party at home. That way you’ll be able to enjoy your child’s special day rather than missing out on those magical moments. Balloons are the only decorations you really need, and ask a friend to help you out in the kitchen. Consider hiring a professional entertainer to take care of the music and games, and if the weather’s fine encourage the kids into the garden. If a party at home feels too stressful or a squeeze, then consider booking one of the popular local party venues...
At Greenlands Farm Village, Tewitfield, the Fun on the Farm Party package is £10 per child and features a guided tour of the open farm complete with meeting the alpacas, feeding the ducks and donkey rides, followed by a sandwich or pizza buffet in the party room at Wellies Café. Meanwhile, the Super Duper Soft Play Party costs from £9 per child and gives parents the chance to enjoy a coffee while youngsters have fun in the PlayBarn, followed by a sandwich buffet with ice cream. At Ducky’s Park Farm, Flookburgh, children’s parties are £9 per child including fun time in the soft play area, entry into the farm and outdoor play areas, feeding the animals by hand, rides on the barrel train and a party buffet. Cinema parties and pizzamaking parties are also big hits, especially with slightly older children – try Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre and Pizza Express restaurant.
Themes & activities...
An easy theme like pirates, princesses or superheroes lets everyone join in without putting busy mums to too much trouble making elaborate costumes. Set some music playing as the guests arrive to help everyone get into the party mood, and consider setting out a craft table where the kids can sit and do some colouring before the games begin. Nostalgic favourites like pass the parcel, musical statues, egg-andspoon, and pin the tail on the donkey are easy to organise. Kids love having their faces painted, too.

Food...
Serve the favourites that you know they’ll love – pizza, sausages, pasta, chips, cherry tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, Oreo cookies and cartons of juice. An improvised ice cream stall with cones and 99 chocolate flakes is perfect for dessert. Stock up on paper plates and cups to save on washing up, and don’t feel the least bit guilty if you buy a birthday cake from the shops. If you do decide to bake your own, a simple Victoria sponge covered with milk chocolate and Smarties is scrumptious.
Party bags...
These days it just wouldn’t be a party without treat-filled bags to take home, but they don’t have to cost a fortune. Buy brown paper sandwich bags and pop in a slice of birthday cake together with just one or two little gifts, such as crayons, stickers, glow-in-the-dark stars, bubbles or a Mr Men or Little Miss book.
The Playbarn at Greenlands Farm Village
A place where babies, toddlers and older children can happily and safely climb, clamber, slide, swing and explore – whatever the Lancashire weather.
Birthday Parties a speciality!
Home time...
Two hours is definitely long enough for any children’s party, and the birthday boy or girl will probably be bursting to unwrap their presents (best saved until after the party so you can keep track of who gave what for the ‘thank yous’). Once you’ve waved goodbye to the last guest, pour yourself a well-deserved glass of wine and enjoy the peace and quiet – until next year.

On hot humid days, wearing your hair off your face will help you to stay cool as well as winning style points if you choose one of this summer’s key looks - pretty plaits and bohemian braids; sleek, wet-look hair; or a sports-luxe ponytail, gathered at the nape of the neck.

World Nunchaku and Kobudo Championships 20th -21st June 2015 Sensei Richard Smith, founder and President of Kesshin Kai U.K. – Ju-Jitsu, Sport Nunchaku and Kobudo, has been granted the honour of hosting the prestigious World Nunchaku and Kobudo Championships event at the Judo Pre-Olympic training centre in Kendal this June 20th -21st. More than 200 Martial arts experts and referees from all over the world will be coming to Cumbria to showcase their exquisite skills, a feast for the eyes in which spectators are most welcome. The Sport Nunchaku derives from the Japanese martial art of Nunchaku-do ‘way of Nunchaku’. It was made most famous in the early seventies by the late legendary martial artist and movie star ‘Bruce Lee’. Today Nunchaku is practised traditionally but also during a sporting environment. Sport Nunchaku is practised where two opponents face each other with foam Nunchaku’s on a matted area and attempt to strike each other in a controlled sporting environment. The one with the most points wins. It is a fantastic sport for all ages to watch and partake in. I’m sure everyone who comes to watch will be amazed The Kobudo is another very old martial arts tradition that involves training utilising a variety of metal, wooden, bladed, and non-bladed hand-held weapons: the Tonfa are used in pairs creating a blocking, trapping and striking weapon; the Bo is a six foot heavy staff; the Jo is a shorter version of the Bo; the Sai is a metal pointed dagger;
Sensei Richard Smith says he is greatly honoured to be given the opportunity to both host a world championship event and to provide a world-class demonstration of Sport Nunchaku and Kobudo for the people of Cumbria. He has spent time training in Okinawa, Japan, learning many skills under teachers from Okinawan style Karate, Aiki Jiu Jitsu, Okinawan Kobudo and under 3rd generation Samurai Master Hammamotto, through the art of Ken Jutsu and Iaido (way of the Sword). Sensei Smith hosts this international event as a 6th Dan Ju-jitsu, 3rd Dan Nunchaku, and 2nd Dan Kobudo. The programme begins at 9am and is expected to finish around 4 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday morning will begin with Kesshin Kai’s own ‘area’ ground fighting competitions engaging participants ranging from four to fifty years of age. The Combat Nunchaku competitions begin mid morning with the juniors and the women taking to the mats first, followed by the Mens Master’s competition. The Men’s main competition will then continue through the afternoon with the highly anticipated final taking place around 4pm. The historic art of Kata Kobudo competition takes place on Sunday morning before the dynamic, explosive Nunchaku Freestyle Competition erupts on the mats in the afternoon and concludes the weekend’s competitions. Please come along and support this fantastic event, you never know what curiosity or drive it may inspire within you or your family and friends. A warm welcome is extended to all. The Judo Training Centre is located at Parkside Business Centre, Parkside Road, Kendal. Adults: £5.00, Children: £4.00, Families: 2 adults and 2 children £11.00, 2 adults 3 children £13.00

GARDENING TIPS in
association with...
I hope your spring gardens are taking shape ready for summer? To keep on top here are a few tips for June and July...
June...
July...
Lawns
On a wet day put on some high nitrogen summer lawn food, but don’t do it when it’s dry…
Flowers
Time to cut back any old leaves on the hellebores – they’ll be making nice new shiny ones over the summer. Collect the seeds and sow them in seed trays – it’s a great way to propagate them. Deadhead rhododendrons and camellias Sow biennials for planting out in the autumn. Forget-me-nots, Sweet William and foxgloves…
Flowers & Shrubs Support/stake your flowers. In our lovely UK summer we are just as prone to sudden wet and windy weather as in the winter Dead head bedding plants, roses and many other perennials. This will prolong the flowering period Plants benefit from summer feeding – in roses for example it can encourage a second flush in autumn. Choose a good liquid fertilizer and get going with the watering can :) Plant autumn flowering bulbs

Summer jobs for home & garden The promise of summer days, blue skies and sunshine is all the inspiration we need to freshen up our homes and gardens for the season ahead. Bringing the brightness of summer into your living space can be easily achieved with just a few simple changes. Transform a cosy, wintry lounge into a light-filled haven by replacing heavy curtain fabrics with voiles that let the sun stream through, colonial-style shutters or roller blinds that can be pulled down when the evening draws in – try Soper’s Bespoke on Kendal’s Stramongate for inspiration, expert advice and custommade fittings. Store away velvet or chenille cushion covers and replace them with textured linen in deckchair stripes, gingham checks or ice cream shades; and swap scented candles for jugs filled with flowers. Freshly painted white walls will update a tired winter room in a weekend, and they make the perfect go-with-everything backdrop for everything from brightly coloured geometric fabrics to rustic, painted furniture and natural wicker baskets (perfect for disguising magazines and all kinds of clutter). A fresh set of crisp cotton bedding will help you to keep cool during balmy summer nights, and scatter cushions in sky blue or sunshine yellow will add a breezy, coastal feel.
Outdoors, the barbecue season is beckoning, so give the grill a good onceover and stock up on charcoal so that you’re all set to BBQ when the sun appears. Stay on top of the watering by giving pots and hanging baskets a daily drink; harvest beans, tomatoes, lettuce and strawberries as they ripen; and raise your mower blades to prevent the lawn from scorching during hot spells. Garden furniture may well be looking a little tired, but a thorough clean and a coat of protective oil will restore its smartness in time for all that outdoor entertaining to come.
