utdoor play is enjoying a real revival among young families thanks to the feelgood factor of getting out into the fresh air and sunshine. Most mums and dads born in the 1970s and earlier will remember playing outside endlessly in their childhood, whether riding bikes, building dens, skipping or roller skating until bedtime. The popularity of computer games and children’s television may have tempted many youngsters to spend their leisure hours indoors during recent years, but the tide is defnitely turning back to the great outdoors and the wholesome feeling of well-being that it brings. Balance bikes, scooters, trampolines and skateboards – all are fantastic ways to encourage the family’s younger members to let of steam and get a good night’s sleep. Youngsters won’t realise it, but as they get active they will be making their muscles and bones stronger; topping up their Vitamin D; increasing coordination and balance as they learn new physical skills; building selfconfdence; and enjoying an exciting sense of freedom, challenge and exploration that just cannot be matched indoors. Even a weekend trip to the playground can help to nurture those all-important social skills, such as taking turns on the slide, or being kind to a playmate if they tumble over.

Here are 5 easy ideas for fun in the fresh air this spring…

Get the kids to fll a bird feeder with peanuts and see how many feathered friends you can spot in your garden, or buy a plain wooden bird house and let the little ones decorate it themselves. Head into the hills for a family kite-fying competition.
Plant a fresh herb garden and put the children in charge of watering it and snipping basil for pasta sauce, oregano for pizza and mint for new potatoes. Fill a bucket with water and let the little ones loose with a paintbrush on your patio, decking or garden fence.
Drive to the beach and see who can write their name the biggest in the sand. Remember to pack some marshmallows for toasting on the campfre afterwards.

Egg & Bacon Pie This picnic classic from Australia is easy to transport, serves 8 and you won’t need sandwiches. Kids will love rolling out and glazing the pastry. Remember to take some tomato ketchup.
450g frozen puff pastry, thawed 2 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced into discs salt & pepper 350g back bacon 8 medium eggs 1 egg yolk mixed with 2 tbsp milk
1 Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas 6 with a baking sheet on the top shelf. 2 Roll out half the pastry and use to line a 25 x 20cm shallow ovenproof dish, letting the edges hang over the sides. Prick the base with a fork
and layer the potatoes on top, seasoning well. 3 Add the bacon and break the eggs on top. Cover with the remaining pastry. Trim the ends and pinch the edges to seal. Pierce the top so steam can escape.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Squares Fresh strawberries and raspberries would taste scrumptious alongside these no-bake treats.
1 Lightly grease a shallow square tin and line the base with greaseproof paper.
100g dark chocolate 2 rounded tbsp crunchy peanut butter 3 cups Rice Krispies
3 Take the bowl of the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies.
2 Melt the chocolate and peanut butter in a bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Mix well.
4 Spoon the mixture into the tin and press down evenly. Chill in the fridge for 2 hours, then turn out of the tin and cut into 12 squares.
4 Brush the pie with egg glaze and bake for 20 minutes. Reduce the oven to 180C/Gas 4 for 3040 minutes more, until the pastry is golden brown. 5 Cut the cooled pie into 8 squares and wrap in tin foil.
Home-made
Lemonade The perfect drink on a sunny day.
3 unwaxed lemons, roughly chopped 140g caster sugar 1 litre cold water 1 Tip the lemons, sugar and half the water into a food processor and blend until the fruit is fnely chopped. 2 Pour the mixture into a sieve over a bowl, then press through as much juice as you can. Top up with the remaining water and decant into a fask.

Keep smiling through on rainy days The drip-drop of April showers on the window or a spot of miserable May weather needn’t spell disaster during the school holidays. Thankfully there are plenty of attractions on our doorstep where the family can keep dry and entertained, instead of cooped up at home all day. A trip to the zoo is guaranteed to cheer up the glummest faces and the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is truly an all-weather attraction. ‘The little zoo with lots to do’ is a couple of miles south of Milnthorpe, on the A6, and is renowned for its conservation work. Among the exotic, lush vegetation of the butterfy hall and tropical house, you can get close to butterfies, birds and bats; watch lizards lounge; and marvel at industrious leaf-cutter ants carrying slices of leaf along their suspended rope walk. Sunnier days are appreciated by many other creatures such as meerkats, lemurs and monkeys, and the attraction is also home to an outdoor park, a café, a family of snow leopards – described as the world’s rarest big cat – and also Britain’s frst walkthrough big carnivore enclosure. Another must-see for animal lovers is Fangs and Fins, the reptile and aquatic store at Blackhall Yard, Kendal, where owners Mick and Claire set out to share their passion for fsh and exotic creatures. They ofer a wide range of tropical and cold-water fsh, snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions and more; as well as all the bedding, food and equipment needed. Another perfect place to while away a rainy hour in Blackhall Yard is Grandma’s Puppet Shop, a proper traditional toyshop selling puppets and wooden toys such as theatres, shops, toy food, trains and balance bikes. The retro nature of many of the playthings will appeal to nostalgic parents, while children will love the fact they can try things out before taking them home.
Kids Guide
A visit to the mock gothic Wray Castle in Ambleside is another perfect place for a wet rainy day. You’ll be pleased to know the rooms may be empty of grand possessions, but there’s plenty of fun to be had for the kids in their dressing up and castle-building spaces. Outside in family-friendly gardens there’s also plenty to do, like the rope swing, den-building and trails to follow. With its rich history, relaxed atmosphere, stunning views and fantastic woodland, Allan Bank at Grasmere makes for a great day out for the whole family, whatever the weather. Allan Bank is a place to relax in front of a warm fre with a cup of tea while the children play. Once home to William Wordsworth and National Trust founder Canon Rawnsley, Allan Bank was rescued from the ravages of fre in 2011. Now partially restored and undecorated, the house ofers you the opportunity to see and touch the many layers of this home’s fascinating history. Look out for rainy day fun at Kendal Leisure Centre, too, where there are plenty of sporty and splash-tastic activities to stop the kids getting bored on holiday. Visit www.northcountryleisure. org.uk/south-lakeland/kendal-leisure-centre to fnd out more.

Blackhall Yard, Kendal (opposite the library) T: 01539 729604 E: info@fangsandfns.co.uk www.fangsandfins.co.uk Congratulations on your first year of trading! How has it been for you? We have really enjoyed bringing the aquatic and reptile hobbies to a wider clientele in Kendal. Lots of customers getting into reptiles for the first time and really enjoying it. We constantly get compliments on the cleanliness of our aquarium sales tanks and the variety of stock. We deliberately stock fish that will do well in most household community aquariums. So what is the driving force behind running a business dealing with animals? There is always something different or new in this industry. Exotic invertebrates (big bugs) are really growing in interest. Tarantulas and scorpions are our best sellers, but giant beetle kits, praying mantis and millipedes are all very interesting. We also pride ourselves on the high quality of our live foods. Tell us more about your work with schools and colleges? We are passionate about sharing our enthusiasm, so we are working with a number of high schools to provide week long work experience placements. Students from Newton Rigg and Kendal College are also doing long term placements with us. We support the Animal Rescue Centre based at Kendal College as a supplier of feed and specialist goods.
If someone is thinking about buying a reptile for their home, what advice would you give them? Come see us and ask all about it. We are happy to give out free care sheets and show our animals to those who are interested. We also give a free book written by our reptile specialist vet with all set-ups. What’s next for Fangs & Fins? Lots and Lots! We have a really exciting new range of reptiles in stock, to suit the beginner or more experienced keeper. We are stocking a wider range of fish and aquatic plants with a whole new plant stock system in the pipeline. This year’s tortoise kits are going to be bigger and cheaper and we are going “Bio-Active” with live planting and substrates All backed up with Mick’s 25 years’ experience as a professional horticulturalist.

Preparing your home for viewing is known as ‘staging’ and could help you increase its value and fnd a buyer faster, as well as increasing socalled kerb appeal. Even if you’re not planning to relocate, some simple, low-cost tweaks are an efective way to tap into the ever-popular trend of ‘improve, don’t move’.
towels and even new tea towels will make your home look well cared-for, while fresh fowers or potted orchids are a stylish way to cheer up any room.
Clearing out clutter will let potential buyers appreciate just how much living space there is, and also make it easier to envisage themselves living there. Take unwanted items to the charity shop, and put the rest into storage or ask a friend.
With bright, light and airy rooms top of most people’s wish list, consider giving walls a fresh lick of neutral paint; clean windows inside and out; switch on lamps in dark corners; and think about putting up wall mirrors, especially in narrow hallways or landings.
First impressions such as a new doormat and freshly painted front door go a long way. Brew a pot of ground coffee or put some partbaked baguettes in the oven for their inviting aroma, and light the fre if the day feels the least bit chilly or overcast (pine cones smell wonderful as they burn).

Now all that’s left is to fnd your own new ‘home sweet home’.

Glow
for gold this summer
As spring days grow longer and warmer, the perfect moment has arrived to get ahead with your summer beauty prep. After long months wrapped up in opaque tights, jeans and long boots, legs will thank you for giving them some TLC before letting them see the light of day. Getting into a good waxing routine at your favourite beauty salon will help keep limbs smooth for much longer than shaving at home, as well as creating the ideal base for cheating a sun-kissed glow. Choose gradual tanning products at home to build up natural-looking colour day by day, bufng elbows and knees with a body scrub frst for the smoothest results. Better yet, book an appointment with a beauty therapist for an exfoliation, followed by a gorgeous, streak-free tan expertly applied. Cheating a golden glow will mean that you’re ready for anything from cute sundresses to denim shorts once the temperature rises and the sun comes out. Manicures have never been so popular, thanks to the nails-as-jewellery trend worn by stars
Health & Beauty
like Rihanna, Lily Allen and Rita Ora. Big trends for spring/summer 2015 include classic lipstick red with matching lips; and baby-soft nude nails and rosy beiges that fatter all skin tones. Sun-kissed hands are the ideal backdrop for the more daring ‘negative’ manicure, such as halfmoons painted mint-green, with the rest of the fngertip left bare, or space-age metallic stripes down one side of the nail. Meanwhile, everyone from blondes to redheads, brunettes to silver-haired, looks better with some colour on their face, and the latest BB creams promise coverage, glowing skin and sun protection all-in-one. Treat yourself to an eyelash tint at the salon, apply a rose-tinted cream blusher to the apples of your cheeks, add a slick of SPF lip balm and you’re good to go.

Holistic Therapy We all want to feel great now summer is nearly here, so how why is diet so important when it comes to good energy levels? The best way to support vibrant energy levels is by supporting good blood sugar levels. You can do this by eating regular meals containing enough protein throughout the day. Lots of people set the day of on the wrong foot by missing breakfast or not eating enough protein to set the blood sugar on the right track. It’s not all about blood sugar - when we look at producing energy efciently, the key ingredients are the nutrients Magnesium, B vitamins, omega 3 and 6 fats, so optimising these in your diet is a great way to fre up your energy levels too. If you think you need help to get your energy levels up to where you want them, why not make an appointment with Liz McWatt and see if she can fne tune your diet and get your energy levels up and running to get you fring on all cylinders and making the most out of your life.
