Carnival, County Show and Street Art - this September! Kendal has a vibrant calendar of events on the way this autumn, starting with Mintfest, the town’s international festival of outdoor arts. From Friday 29 to Sunday 31 August, artists and companies from around the world will head for the auld grey town to amuse, entertain and delight. Saturday will see the streets of Kendal burst into life with performances and entertainment, mostly free; whilst Sunday’s programme is mainly located around Abbot Hall Park. The organisers, Kendal Arts International, suggest packing a picnic or treating yourself at the catering stalls whilst marvelling at the antics of circus, theatre, dance and walkabout artists and performers. This year’s Mintfest features six newly commissioned shows. They include The Lift, described as a roving theatrical experience, by Wet Picnic; and the Soul of Fado, by Nuno Silva, which promises to combine dance, music and fre. Many new shows are still in development, and the calibre of performers heading for Kendal is expected to be very high.
Mintfest’s organisers are thrilled to welcome more than ten international companies, many making their UK debut, such as the extraordinary creatures of La Menagerie; a poetic musical installation in the ruins of Kendal Castle by Tuig; and an exciting acrobatic and aerial duet by FullStop Acrobatics. Favourite British companies include the Fairly Famous Family with their tongue-in-cheek brand of humour. Meanwhile, the Brewery Arts Centre gardens will be home to an outdoor music stage, whilst the Brewery’s Malt Room will feature late-night comedy cabaret.
For full details of Mintfest, visit www.lakesalive.org Lane Farm at Crooklands will be hosting the much-loved event – voted 5th top show in the country by the Farmers Guardian on Thursday 11 September. Westmorland County Show has been a frm fxture on the calendar for more than 200 years, and last year’s event attracted near-record crowds of more than 30,000 visitors, with popular appearances by the Countess of Wessex and chef Phil Vickery.

Kendal Torchlight Carnival always follows hot on the heels of County Show, and takes place on Friday 12 September this year. More than 1200 people took part in last year’s procession, which featured more than 60 foats, dance groups, marching bands and carnival performers. They entertained around 25,000 people as they wound their way around the streets of Kendal on a warm, dry night, and organisers will be hoping for good weather again this year. The event is run by unpaid volunteers and frst took place in 1970. Over the years it has raised many thousands of pounds for worthy causes. To join the Friends of Kendal Torchlight Carnival and help ensure the continued success of this annual event, visit

Add some
home comforts this autumn The frst chilly mornings and evenings of autumn bring out the ‘home bird’ in many of us, and our thoughts turn to those home comforts that will see us through the cooler seasons ahead. Something as simple as a cosy woollen rug – whether traditionally patterned or in a bold, contemporary design – can make wooden foors feel instantly warmer. As well as helping to prevent heat loss, rugs are an easy way to refresh a room without redecorating. A soft blanket or throw to snuggle beneath on the couch with a cup of tea is also a must on chilly evenings, maybe with some new cushions to coordinate. Thick curtains with thermal linings are designed to help insulate your home; not just in the lounge or bedroom, but also on doors that lead to the
outside, to give an added layer of protection. Kendal is home to several excellent-quality frms that will make curtains and blinds to your individual requirements, such as Linen Stop on Stricklandgate, Indigo Furnishings in Kirkland, and Blinds By Design just of Appleby Road. All have a wealth of fabric samples to choose from. If you’re considering more major home improvements, then how about a woodburning stove? More than just a wonderful focal point, they run at up to 87% efficiency compared to up to 25% for a traditional open coal fre, and have the potential to lower the costs of heating an average family home by £400 a year. Fitting a wood burner could cost around £1,500, with the stove paying for itself after around fve years. Experienced installers in the Kendal area include Burning Curiosity and Cumbria Stoves.
Biomass is the buzzword in energy efficiency right now. Swapping your old boiler for an eco-friendly biomass one is a serious investment, but could reap dividends if you currently use oil and electricity, as well as drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions. There are fnancial incentives available, too (see www.ofgem.gov.uk). Biomass boilers burn dry wood pellets extremely efficiently, warming your home and providing hot water through renewable energy. They are particularly wellsuited for rural properties that are of mains gas, ofering a cost-efective alternative to fuel sources such as oil or LPG. Local company On-core Heating of Kendal is an excellent source of advice if you’re thinking of switching to biomass.

PLANNING FOR THE
Party SEASON
Diaries fill up fast for December so it’s never too early to start planning the perfect Christmas party. The cosy and intimate setting of one of Kendal’s favourite restaurants has just the right feel for smaller groups: somewhere like the New Moon, Paulo Gianni’s or the Grainstore at the Brewery Arts Centre. A stylish pub such as Romneys would also be ideal, and the River Bar at the Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley has character in abundance. An ever-popular choice is an of-the-shelf, shared party night at a Kendal hotel such as the Castle Green or Stonecross Manor, giving you the atmosphere of a larger event on a smaller budget. Kendal Golf Club and Carus Green also have superb function rooms and stacks of experience in hosting celebrations.
Once the date and venue are taken care of, it’s time to start planning that all-important party season look. The perfect Christmas party outft is top of every girl’s winter shopping list, and Kendal boutiques such as Maya Maya and Jules B bring great shopping to our doorstep. The LBD is a classic that never goes out of style, and when the party’s over you still have a dress you can wear time and time again. If you fancy turning a few more heads, opt for winter white (best accessorised with a light golden tan), Santa-inspired red, or ring the changes with animal print. Tuxedo tailoring is a chic and understated option, ideal for dressing up with statement jewellery, metallic heels and a sparky clutch.
For a truly individual look, head to The Exchange Designer and Vintage Dress Agency on Kendal’s Highgate, and you can guarantee that nobody else will turn up in the same dress. Beauty treatments such as a facial for soft, dewy skin; leg waxing; or a glamorous manicure will have you feeling like the belle of the ball. And remember to book in at the salon for a full-on blow dry, glamorous up-do, or sleek ballet-style bun. Add smoky eyes, lashings of mascara and a matte red lip, and let the party begin.

Q&A ‘We spoke to Mick and Claire, owners of Fangs and Fins about their new business, here’s what they had to say’…. Fangs and Fins, what a great name! Can you tell us a little about how the business got started? We have been keeping and breeding tropical fsh for around 20 years now and got involved in reptiles and other exotics several years ago after a trip to Blackpool Zoo. We have been members of various aquatic and reptile associations for some time and we instigated the founding of the local Reptile club a couple of years ago to bring hobbyists together from around the south lakes area. We have run our exotic animal events and education company “Ugly-bugs.com” for the last 4 years and always struggled to fnd good quality products from a reliable supplier locally. We really felt that if we were having these issues, then the wider hobbyist community must be too. [Mick] “I worked as a buyer and aquarist for another retail aquarium and I love talking to people about their hobby and sharing my personal experience as a hobbyist with them”.
Please tell us more, what can I expect when I come into the shop? All of our products and equipment are brought in from the best suppliers in the country and many are manufactured here in the UK. We also get as much of our livestock, both Aquatic and reptile from local private breeders.
We breed a number of fsh, invertebrates and snakes ourselves and feel it is important to know the “back history” of the animals we sell. We feel very strongly that it is our responsibility to stock fsh and reptiles that are suitable for most people to keep for the life of the animal. We are signed up to the “Big Fish” awareness campaign to help make people aware that it is a complete myth that fsh only grow to the size of the tank they are in!
Reptile, Amphibian & Invert Club for exotic pet keepers and the Preston and District Aquatic Society for fsh keepers are superb places to make good friends with other keepers and breeders. We are happy to ofer continuing support on all the animals and equipment we sell and we work closely with Kendal based M&M pet sitters, Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre in Penrith and reptile specialist vet Siuna Reid in Lytham.
What products and services do you provide?
You recently moved into Blackhall Yard, how is that going?
We stock everything you will need to start-up with your new aquarium or Vivarium and all the regular ongoing essentials such as quality live and prepared foods, the latest LED lighting and fuorescent tubes and much more. We give out complimentary care sheets to everyone who is interested in starting out for the frst time with a new reptile or fsh tank. All our aquatic plants are imported direct from a specialist grower in Holland and we apply an antisnail treatment when they arrive to ensure they are clean for our customers.
It’s been great to be a part of the new businesses that have started up in Blackhall Yard recently. It is an ideal location for us as many Kendal shoppers come into town on foot or by bus and are very pleased not to have to travel out of town to get good quality live food, bedding and aquarium supplies. Our shop has enough retail space for what we need, while giving us space upstairs for animal quarantine and storage.
For anyone starting out in keeping reptiles/fish what advice would you give? Do your research! Be aware of “internet experts”. Facebook and forums are great, but you can’t beat meeting other keepers face to face, seeing how things work for them and how experienced keepers handle and deal with their animals. The North Lancs South Lakes
What’s next for Fangs and Fins? We are always expanding our range of livestock and equipment to ofer as much diversity and choice as possible. We are looking to put on some introductory workshops during the summer holidays to help people get over the apprehensions and myths about the animals we sell and we will continue to support the local hobbyist clubs. Thanks for your time Mick and Claire, we wish you all the very best for the future.

dare!! handle exotic animals… if you What exactly is Ugly-Bugs… and are they all ugly? Ugly-Bugs is a unique experience for children and adults to get ‘up close and personal’ with exotic animals. People get to hold the animals as well as learn about them. We usually do this through school workshops or children’s birthday parties, but we also have been to residential homes and are regularly at public events & fairs. As for ‘Are they all ugly?’ Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we hope that at the end of the sessions, people will look at these animals slightly diferently.
Are these animals dangerous, what are the risks? The animals we hold are no more dangerous than a family cat or dog. These are working animals and used to being handled, even by our 3 year old daughter. It’s really a matter of respect, watching the animal’s behaviours and responding to that. If any animals display a warning sign, it has the day of and stays at home. We have such a large collection of animals that we can give some animals a day of and still have loads of exciting ones to show of!
How and why did you start Ugly-Bugs? My partner (Mick) and I have been keeping and breeding these animals for many years and are always trying to surprise each other with bizarre creatures that are easy to care for. This passion for our hobby then developed into Ugly-bugs, which is a
way of sharing our excitement about these incredible animals. We have been developing Ugly-Bugs for over 4 years now and it has really evolved itself through demand from schools, events and children’s parties. We wanted to show people how amazing these animals are and how misunderstood they can be. We wanted to bring a traditionally unusual hobby to the ‘mainstream’ of people and show them how important these animals are. For example, the cockroaches and millipedes are vital to the Rainforests as without them that environment would drown under the waste of rotting leaves, wood, etc.
What can people expect from booking an ugly-bugs event? Schools can expect a bespoke educational visit that teaches to the national curriculum. We work hard at staying up to date with the curriculum and have developed a series of PowerPoint Presentations, activities and worksheets that cover topics such as Rainforests, Habitats, Adaptations, Mini Beasts, Branching Trees, Classifcation and more. The PowerPoint is for no more than ten minutes at the start of the session and then its hands on with the animals and how they relate to the chosen topic.
At any event you will learn something new and hopefully quite interesting, like if a Gecko loses its tail in defence the tail can keep twitching for up to ten minutes after it has detached!
Have you ever lost an animal at an event? No, well not yet….
What kind of animals do you take to schools and parties? We have such a wide selection of snakes, lizards, bugs and amphibians that we take a diferent selection each time we leave the house. Generally for school events we choose the animals according to the topic, so we can demonstrate the animal’s adaptations to its environment. As for birthdays, well that’s just a whole load of fun, so anything goes. We usually take a selection of bugs and then the child/ adult can choose from 2-3 reptiles/ exotic mammals. The African Pygmy Hedgehog is always a favourite, especially as he’s really grumpy until you pop him in a warm bath, then he walks about and shows of to everyone.
You can find out a lot more about the events, prices, animals and frequently asked questions at our website:

If youÕre planning a wedding, lucky you, because there have never been so many wonderful ways to celebrate your big day.
Tailor-made
Weddings
For brides and grooms saying ‘I do’ in 2014 and 2015, the emphasis is frmly on individuality and putting your own personal stamp on the celebrations, whether that be walking down the aisle in a vintage wedding gown, mismatching your bridesmaids’ dresses, hiring an ice cream van, or dining in a candlelit tipi. There’s no such thing as a onesize-fts-all wedding any more, and that’s great news for you and your guests because it can only make the occasion even more memorable. Here in the Lake District we have some of the world’s most beautiful wedding venues. Our village churches are pretty and charming, and our country pubs and luxury hotels are unrivalled for their warm welcome, stylish décor and breathtaking surroundings.
DIY and mix-and-match weddings are becoming increasingly popular for intimate and informal nuptials, but many couples still opt for the reassurance of having a hotel wedding planner oversee their big day. Planners have years of experience, and their starting point is talking through your ideas, no matter how small, and hearing about the things that you love and are important to you. They will do their utmost to incorporate all these special details, which is what will make the day tailor-made for you. There’s been a real upsurge of interest in vintage fashions of late, with old-fashioned lace frmly back in vogue, along with silk tea dresses and accessories such as 30s-inspired T-bar heels, pillbox hats, birdcage veils, and small capes or stoles for keeping warm at autumn and winter weddings (try a pretty parasol in summer).
You may be blessed with the perfect hand-me-down from Mum’s attic or, if not, Kendal has some of the best independent bridal shops in the area. A personal favourite is A Family Affair in the New Shambles. Owner Christine gives her take on how to ensure you come away with the dress of your dreams. “From the minute you book your appointment with us at A Family Afair, you are guaranteed a personal one to one service and expert advice to help you fnd the dress of your dreams, whether it be a gown from one of our Designer Collections or a Bespoke dress designed and made just for you. It’s not only the Bride we look after though, we also have bridesmaid dresses, Mother of the Bride & Groom outfts as well as Men’s Formal Hire.” Once the date is set and the venue booked, most brides can’t wait to start shopping for a dress, if they haven’t already.

Put silver-framed photos of your parents’ and grandparents’ wedding day out on display at your reception, and consider details such as lace-edged invites or lace-inspired icing on your cake.
Afternoon tea-style wedding receptions will transport your guests back to a golden and elegant era. Think place settings with vintage china teacups, dainty sandwiches and cream scones. Nostalgic music will make the evening party go with a swing, from 40s big band tunes to Frank Sinatra. The rustic, natural look is also big news for weddings, whether that be bridesmaids in mismatched gowns with loose braids in their hair; or soft and romantic bouquets of peonies and garden roses that appear freshly picked from the garden.
Serve your wedding breakfast at sunset in a hired tipi lit with twinkling lights and intertwined with greenery, and scatter hay bales, deckchairs and tartan rugs outside for relaxed outdoor seating. You could take this theme one step further with an eco-friendly wedding. The dress of your dreams could be waiting for you in a charity shop – a gown with character and a story to tell. Give Fairtrade chocolates as favours, or make a donation to your favourite charity on your guests’ behalf. Romance is a wedding theme that never fades from style, with a colour scheme of blush pink, nude, peach and pale gold for everything from fowers to bridesmaids, buttonholes to table linen. It’s a look that conjures up the elegance of bygone days, and it works best by candlelight. Think candelabra and clusters of diferent sized lanterns to light up your venue; gold sugar stripes on wedding cakes and dainty gold chairs. Set the theme early on with gold foil stamping on your invitations (small and dainty is the way to go, maybe with freehand illustrations if you
know an artist). For cakes, ombre is big news: frosted white on the top tier, then tip-toe down from palest to deepest pink. In the summer, consider a zesty lemon sponge; and in winter, chocolate with rich hints of mocha or praline.

KESSHIN KAI We caught up with local martial arts expert Rich Smith to fnd out more about what he does and the benefts to be had from taking up this exciting art! Hi Rich, can you tell us more about Kesshin Kai, what it is and what martial arts you teach? Kesshin Kai is Japanese and translates to English as ‘Group of determined hearts’. The martial arts we teach are Ju-Jitsu, Sport Nunchaku and Kobudo. Can you tell us a bit more about each of these martial arts? It is believed that Ju-Jitsu is over 2,500 years old and was practiced by the ancient Samurai in the open hand form alongside their weapons training. The art of Ju-Jitsu is thought to have been developed from many individual forms of unarmed combat native to Japan. Ju translates to ‘Gentle’ and Jitsu can be translated to mean ‘Art’ and represents manipulating the opponents force against him rather than confronting it with one’s own force. Sport Nunchaku is a martial art using a traditional Okinawan martial arts weapon consisting of two sticks connected at one end by a short chain or rope. Sport Nunchaku is made up of fve elements - Kata, Application, Freestyle, Tricks and Combat. A kata is when you perform basic nunchaku techniques arranged in dance-like moves, as fuently and perfectly as possible. These techniques are aimed at an imaginary opponent. The purpose of a kata is to get a better understanding of the techniques. Application is all about manipulation the nunchaku. Freestyling and Tricks are a more visually stunning, rather than combative way of using the nunchaku and are also performed on each belt, the higher the belt, the more difficult the trick or routine. Combat involves two competitors using safety protective helmets and groin guards. Regarding Kobudo it is a believed that Okinawan farming tools evolved into weapons due to restrictions placed upon the peasants by the Satsuma Samuraii clan when the island was made a part of Japan, which forbade them from carrying arms. As a result, it is said, they were defenseless and developed a fghting system around their traditional farming implements. We practice Kobudo using various types of wooden weapons including the tonfa, kama, nunchaku and katana.
What are the benefts to taking up martial arts? Martial Arts are great for all ages and ftness levels. Aside from the obvious improvements in your ftness levels you will undoubtedly gain more self- confdence, discipline, self-esteem and co-ordination. Martial arts are an excellent way of completely improving your physical and mental well-being. Where do you teach classes and when? We hold classes in Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside, Carlisle and Penrith. All class times are on the website at http://www.world-jujitsu.com/index.html and http://www.snuk. org.uk/index.html. We are running a series of Summer Self Defence Classes at Kendal Leisure Centre throughout August and September. To book onto a class please visit the website and go to ‘Latest News’ link. What can I expect if I come to one of the self-defence classes? First of all you will be greeted by a very friendly and supportive group. you will be assigned a more experienced student who will work closely with you giving you help and guidance though the evening. After a short warm up, you will be shown some basic self-defence moves, incorporating some escapes and break-aways, leading onto more intermediate and advanced techniques as you progress. So, what’s next for Kesshin Kai? We will continue to develop our classes striving to help people see the real benefts of taking up martial arts and in 2015 we are starting a series of instructor training courses. Kendal is also hosting the World Nunchaku Championships next year involving over ten countries! Sign up to our newsletter for more information. Thanks for your time Rich, very interesting and inspiring, we wish you all the best for the future.

Determined hearts celebrate an inspiring year in martial arts For the members of Kesshin Kai martial arts club, it’s been another fantastic year of success and achievement. The name of the club, which specialises in Ju-Jitsu, Sport Nunchaku and Kobudo, means a determined group of hearts – and its popular weekly classes in Kendal, Ambleside, Windermere, Penrith and Carlisle are spreading enjoyment of Japanese martial arts throughout Cumbria. Newcomers are always given a warm welcome to classes, and they can enjoy a 4-week taster for just £20 for juniors, and £25 for adults, which includes a club T-shirt. “Martial arts can be taught to anybody, from age 4 upwards, right through to 75,” explained club founder and Sensei (teacher) Richard Smith. Sensei Smith is fourth in the world and second in Europe at Nunchaku Combat and third in Europe at Nunchaku Freestyle. He is 2nd Dan in Kobudo and also achieved his 6th Dan Ju-Jitsu and his 3rd Dan Nunchaku in October last year. Members join the club for lots of diferent reasons. “Sometimes it’s for ftness, sometimes discipline, sometimes confdence and self-esteem,” said Sensei Smith. “Everybody wants to feel confdent, and even adults want to feel more discipline in their lives.” Earlier this year Sensei Smith selected a sport Nunchaku team from around Cumbria to travel to Switzerland and represent Great Britain in the European Nunchaku Championships. In the junior category, Daniel Charnley came away with the Silver medal. A truly excellent achievement to place this highly at a European Championships. Fred Audin from Kendal achieved a fantastic 5th place in the 4-6yrs old category and Connor Woodley from Kendal, his frst time competing abroad, achieved 7th place in both Nunchaku Combat and Nunchaku Freestyle - another incredible achievement. Recently Sensei Smith became the frst competitor from the UK to return home with a medal in Freestyle Nunchaku from a tournament on Dutch soil. With Holland staging competitions for the best part of 50 years, Smith became the frst freestyle medallist from British shores and was only 0.2 points from taking Silver and 0.4 points from snaring gold. To be part of the Kesshin Kai success story, sign up for beginners classes by pressing the red button on the club’s home pages at www.world-ju-jitsu.com or www. snuk.org.uk – and to see the club in action, search for
