We spoke to Mark Buterworth recently, owner of Buterworth Cleaning Services to fnd out more about this thriving, family-run business Hi Mark, this is a family-run business, can you tell us who works for the business and who does what? I work alongside my wife Fiona in the business, I deal with all the operatonal demands and Fiona works on the administraton side, but both my teenage sons now also help on occasion! We employ locally and staf are recommended by people who already work for us so there is an extremely personal feel to our business.

How long has the business been operatng and what areas do you cover? We have been operatng for 12 years in all areas of cleaning, we now specialise in Carpet Cleaning and all foor coverings from Vinyl and wood to all kinds of Stone tles and grout.

Can you tell us a bit more about the services you ofer? Our carpet cleaning systems are unique and give fantastc, sometmes unbelievable results! (you have to go to www.carpetandfoorcare.co.uk to see) We can clean carpets whilst premises are open as the noise is extremely low and carpets are touch dry when we fnish and only need to be lef 1/2 an hour before they are completely dry, guaranteed. Specialist Stonecare training means I am able to come and assess the products and methods required to ensure the best result for any surface. Each contract is treated as an individual and we happily give a quote, we always prioritse the needs of the customer and the requirements of the job and guarantee to give our best service.

Q&A

13

What products do you use and are they environmentally friendly? The products we use are ecological and biologicaly friendly, but work beter than harsh chemicals. I have sourced from diferent parts of the world, Australia, Germany, USA, Ireland and the UK, the best most advance products out there, we are constantly looking for the best systems for our customers and the environment.

Why should I choose Buterworth Cleaning Services and how are you diferent to your compettors? We believe that the customer chooses us because they want the best results. I deal with every contract and quote so what they receive is a very tmely and personal service, I am always on hand to ensure they are happy with the results.

So what can I expect if you come to clean our carpets / foors? We arrive in our specially adapted vehicle, all employees are in Buterworth Cleaning Services uniform, we will move furniture and limit the disrupton to our customer. For Carpet cleaning:- We hoover and treat the carpet before using our specialist system, which cleans, deodorises, stain blocks and dries the carpet so when we leave the furniture is back in place and the only diference is the carpet looks amazing. For Floors:- we clear the surface and remove existng dirt and build-up before treatng, for Tiles or fnished foor coverings each fnish has a specifc individual requirement and process so great care is taken to make sure we use the products best suited to them.

so much to see at

staveley mill yard From a water-powered bobbin turning mill to a vibrant community of artisans, businesses, designers, caterers and brewers – staveley mill yard has come a long way in its 190-year history. This four-acre ‘village within a village’ is home to more than 20 shops and industrial units, and its unique mix of attractions makes it a popular destination in its own right.

During the 20th century, the mill was a signifcant producer of wooden tool handles, but by the 1990s foreign imports had made the business unviable, and the decision was made to turn the mill yard into shops and industrial units, to help return jobs and manufacturing to Staveley. That inspired move resulted in the dynamic and bustling mill yard that we see today. Here are just some of the highlights waiting to be discovered…

hawkshead brewery

Where else can you pick up a freshly baked loaf, enjoy a cappuccino or a locally brewed pint, eat lunch, have a website designed, commission a piece of handcrafted furniture or a timber staircase, take a cookery school course, buy a state-of-the-art road bike or pair of running shoes, stock up on spices and natural skincare, have a clock or car repaired, and even take your toddlers to nursery, all within a stone’s throw of each other?

The glass-fronted building that dominates the yard is home to Hawkshead Brewery and Beer Hall, where visitors can drink beer while watching it being made. The long bar is built around two stainless steel vessels that rise through the frst foor, and the cellar feeding the bar is also behind glass. The brewery makes traditional beers with a modern twist, which you can buy to take home. Hawkshead Brewery’s kitchen also serves food designed to complement its own brews.

Most of us know Staveley Mill Yard frst and foremost for Wheelbase, the UK’s largest bike store, as well as the ever-popular Wilf’s Café and Hawkshead Brewery. There are many other delights tucked away here, too, right beside the fast-fowing River Kent, which once drove wood-turning lathes and now helps to power the businesses located in the yard.

wilf’s café

The original mill was built around 1825 and brought together two factors: the ready market for bobbins and reels in the Lancashire cotton mills, and the plentiful supply of timber in Staveley. The industrial boom saw the mill expand, and in 1853 the river was widened to create a new mill pond and weir. The mill yard has been in the Brockbank family for three generations, starting with Edwin Brockbank, son of a bobbin turner, who became the owner in 1946. His grandson, David, is the owner today.

Once the best-kept secret of cyclists and walkers, Wilf’s attracts an eclectic crowd with its delicious baked potatoes, veg chilli, salad bowls, rarebits, hot breakfasts, traditional puddings and chocolate brownies. This hearty, wholesome menu is served inside or out, on the decking overlooking the River Kent, and Wilf’s also ofers outside catering.

Fallowfield projects If it’s time to replace your windows, or you’re looking to have a conservatory built, joinery specialists Fallowfeld can help. They manufacture standard and bespoke items, from certifed timber windows to internal and external doors, timber staircases, counters, bars, reception desks, shop fttings and orangeries. They also ofer spray paint fnishing, and are renowned for their superb-quality workmanship.

Village pubs serVe up sunday best! there’s something about crisp autumn weekends that go hand-inhand with enjoying a traditional roast at a country pub. crackling log fires, low beamed ceilings and cosy nooks create the perfect backdrop for hearty dishes like roast beef with all the trimmings.

M

any of our most popular locals are set in scenic villages or rural locations that are ideal for taking a stroll afterwards, or you might just prefer to put your feet up by the fre and take things easy with a cofee and the weekend papers. Either way, here are some of our favourite destinations for a proper Sunday roast. The cosy and atmospheric Masons Arms at Strawberry Bank is the perfect autumn hideaway. Locally sourced specialities include Cartmel lamb shoulder served with hotpot potatoes, buttered leeks and a rich red wine and rosemary sauce. Since buying the Hare and Hounds at Levens last year, Ash and Becky Dewar have introduced a popular Sunday lunch menu, featuring traditional favourites such as roast pork with apple sauce, and braised beef stew with root vegetables. Their home-made fruit crumble or sticky tofee pudding with gingerbread ice cream will round things of perfectly if you’ve room to spare. The Punch Bowl at Barrows Green describes itself as a proper Lakeland pub with homecooked pub food in decent portions. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chefs support local farms and businesses wherever they can.

Food & Drink

Hearty platefuls of food are the hallmark of the refurbished Wheatsheaf at Brigsteer. This village inn ofers an inviting series of rooms and cosy corners with log fres and comfy chairs for savouring dishes like slow-cooked pork belly with creamed potatoes, black pudding, apple puree and grain mustard gravy. In the heart of the Lyth Valley, the Punch Bowl at Crosthwaite serves up classic favours in homely yet stylish pub surroundings, and has just been named Cumbria Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide 2015. Recently landing a spot in Waitrose Good Food Guide 2015, Simon Rogan’s Pig & Whistle, in the village of Cartmel, is a fne little boozer. Whether you’ve just been for a walk on the fells or are simply passing through, the pub ofers real ales and great food that can be enjoyed in comfort. Children, dogs and muddy boots are all very welcome! Meanwhile, on the edge of Kendal, Romneys’ delicious four-meat carvery is attracting a loyal following. It’s served every day of the week, not just Sundays, and is a very tempting way to ward of the chilly autumn weather.

Q&A

ESTAbLISHED FOR OVER THREE yEARS

Grandma’s Puppet Shop 13 Blackhall Yard, Kendal. Tel: 07751 750560 We recently spoke to Nicola and Steve, owners of new business Grandma’s Puppet Shop, in Blackhall Yard, to fnd out more about this lovely little gem of a toyshop, right on our doorstep. Tell us a bit about yourself and why you decided to open a toyshop? Shortly after we got married in November 2011 we visited a lovely toy shop in Harrogate looking for Christmas presents for our grandchildren. (We both have raised large families and have 22 grandchildren between us.) We were impressed with the individuality of the shop and the quality of the stock, particularly by the puppets and wooden toys. A seed was sown. We started selling a few puppets at Botany Bay Chorley a year ago and began looking for premises for a shop in the Spring. Where is the shop based? After looking around we felt Kendal was an ideal place for our toy shop and decided on a small unit in Blackhall Yard. So yet another cracking business has opened in Blackhall Yard, how are you fnding things are going since you opened? We are loving it. People have been very positive about the things we stock. We encourage children to have fun and play with the toys and they generate a lovely

atmosphere. One little girl, Daisy, who comes in regularly told Steve she loved him very much! It sounds like you have a real passion for what you do, what kind of toys can we fnd inside? As you can imagine from the name of the shop we sell a lot of puppets from fnger puppets to large chimps. We have traditional wooden toys and some retro toys that were around in the 1960s.

We have wooden food and Bigjigs railway and we have a wide range of Kiddimoto balance bikes and accessories, handmade clocks, Papo animals, knights, fairies and dinosaurs, beautiful mermaids we could go on and on... Too many lovely things to list! Grandma’s Puppet Shop what a lovely name, how did you decide this was to be the name of your business? My daughter Abigail’s children were staying at our home when our frst puppet parcel arrived. They loved them and went home excitedly telling their mum “Grandma’s opening a puppet shop!”

With more and more people using the internet to shop nowadays, how do you compete with that and what makes you different to the larger toy outlets? The internet certainly has it’s place but we ofer a hands on experience. We don’t cater for the moment, our toys will not go out of fashion. Several children have come in and announced “This is the best shop in the world!” We doubt Argos gets the same accolade. We ofer a personal touch with a Christmas savings club and a Birthday gift list service. What’s next for Grandma’s Puppet Shop? Each week we add something new. We are opening upstairs to ofer more sales space so that we can introduce a wider range of toys, such as dolls houses, farm yards, garages and rocking horses. We have launched an internet shop as every day visitors from Poole to Aberdeen have asked whether we sell online. We are having the best time ever, surrounded by lovely things and meeting wonderful children. Every day we wake up eager to come to work. What could be better than that?

Winter Hair & Beauty woes solved

w

inter can bring with it a blizzard of hair and beauty woes, from dry skin to lacklustre locks. but a little extra pampering at home or your favourite salon will help ease you from shivering to glowing, no matter what the weather throws at you.

Fortunately there’s a wealth of protective products to choose from that will replenish lost moisture, such as silky facial oils and serums and deep-conditioning hair treatments. Jaki, from The Beauty Studio in Kendal, explains, “The winter months can play havoc with your skin, hair and nails so a little extra care is required to keep you looking your best.

l “Add a treat to your hair after your shampoo by applying a hair mask; Wella provide the very best whatever your hair type. l “Place a hand cream next to your kitchen sink and other basins. Applying this regularly will not only prevent dry, cracked skin but will ensure your nails stay nourished and brittle-free. l “Finally try introducing Dermalogica’s Overnight Repair Serum into your skincare routine. You can blend this into your regular moisturiser or apply directly to your skin for an intensive treatment.”

l If you’re heading out for a blustery walk in the country, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before putting on a woollen hat to prevent static and dreaded ‘hat hair’, and remember that regular trims every six to eight weeks are a great way to keep locks in beautiful condition. l Another way to keep your hair in perfect condition is to get your hands on the latest hair styler from Joico explains Morag from Zax Hair in Kendal. “This amazing product is just out and we’re proud to be the frst stockists of it in Kendal. The styler is equipped with a fuel reservoir which is flled with the Joico K-Pak VaporFuel - a blend of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, botanical moisturisers and soluble silicones. Controlled heat transforms the fuel liquid into vapour whilst vented plates glide over the hair releasing this vapour, deeply infusing your hair with these nourishing ingredients. The results are quite simply incredible!” l Gentle exfoliation in the shower will help your body to stay bright and healthy by making way for glowing new skin, or consider super-charging your skincare regime by booking an intensive body scrub, treatment or facial with an experienced beautician, for baby-soft and smooth results.

l Tinted moisturiser or BB cream with a ‘pop’ of blusher on the apples of your cheeks is the quickest way to cheat a healthy glow every morning, no matter how low the temperatures plummet, and don’t leave home without lip balmit’s a handbag essential all winter through!

reasons to learn selF deFence There are many good reasons to take a Self Defence Course and yet why do we still put it off? i don’t need it, i have never been the victim of a crime Many of us have been lucky enough to have not been involved in a violent crime. There is an increasing number of us who have, and will be a victim of something we neither asked for, nor deserved. Victims are people like you and me, in fact they can be anyone. You don’t have to be frail, old or young to be a victim. Criminals don’t care who you are, they select someone who has something they want. We spend a fortune on new gadgets and technology. Why do this but not protect something more important, your own life? Think of Self Defence as your own insurance policy. It’s about looking after something which is way more important than a new phone or car. How would you feel if someone stole your belongings? Most people would be gutted, imagine how your family and friends would feel if someone took away something far more important, YOU!

self defence isn’t about beating a mugger up, it’s about giving you strategies and choices should you ever need them to protect yourself. Have you ever been in a position when you felt you were in danger or someone made you feel uncomfortable? Did you ever walk to your car when it’s late or dark and wish you were not on your own? Or you thought someone was following you down the street? Did a group of youths make you feel threatened? Most of us have had at least one situation when we felt worried or scared by a situation we have found ourselves in. Sometimes trouble fnds us whether we want it to or not, Self Defence Classes give you another option. They give you the chance to feel safe in the knowledge that you can defend yourself, if someone attacks you, you have the chance to get away.

i live in cumbria, nothing ever happens here. Wrong! Whilst we live in a relatively peaceful place, violent crime does happen, kids get bullied, teenagers get mugged, people get attacked. It’s not nice but it happens. Thankfully it doesn’t happen very often, but why not be the frst generation to protect yourselves against the bad guys and take steps to make sure you are not a victim. Show your daughters, sons, cousins, brothers, aunts, uncles and friends that they too can protect themselves against people who would take away their power and their dignity. Give them the mental and physical tools to help themselves against would be attackers. Self Defence classes give you the skills to defend yourself in an efective way.

i am a strong lad, i can fight off an attacker if i have to. But what about being against two, three or more of them? After you have had a couple of pints? Young men can often be targeted by drink fuelled groups who see it as a sport to beat up someone else to look “hard.” It’s not “hard,” it’s cowardly but that doesn’t stop them doing it. Imagine having the confdence to say you can protect your own life and your friends and remove yourself from a dangerous situation. Imagine the comfort in knowing that by enrolling your child in Self Defence Classes, they are that much safer walking home from school alone. Or persuading your son to take a class, could help him avoid the drunken bullies when he is out with friends. Remember we are not teaching them to get into a fght, we are teaching them how to get out of an awful situation that they didn’t ask to be in.

i don’t like fighting. i don’t want to have to hurt someone. Sometimes we have to do something we don’t like even if it’s just to protect ourselves, Self Defence is not about going looking for a fght, in fact it’s the opposite. It’s about teaching you strategies to deal with someone who is looking to hurt you, to bully you or to take away your property. It is about making you think faster, react faster and ultimately to make sure you are safe.

ESTAbLISHED FOR OVER THREE yEARS For a lot of people trying to hurt someone else doesn’t come naturally, it is hard for them, that isn’t a sign of weakness. What the self defence class will teach you is ways of overcoming that fear of hurting someone, so you can be efective if you ever need to defend yourself against a criminal.

but aren’t martial arts courses about kicking and punching and being shouted at? The short answer is no, whilst we will teach you certain punches and kicks, we don’t shout you down, or make you do 100 press ups or anything so daft. The aim of a self defence course is to teach you how to be aware of yourself and a would be attacker, how to deal with certain types of attack, how to safely retreat and how to efectively escape. These lessons can be applied in a multitude of diferent situations from dealing with bullies on your way home from school, to stopping an attacker on a lonesome walk to your car after shopping on a dark winters night.

i haven’t got the confidence to stand in front of a group of strangers and start getting thrown about or punched? Everyone on our martial arts courses has been in the position of being the new person, they were supported by other members, in the same way they will support you. Our organisation is built on trust and respect and all of our members understand that. If you watch any of our classes you will see that people of all ages help each other. By training together and supporting each other we are a stronger group. With a little bit of training you will learn how to defend yourself, you will be suprised how quickly you pick it up, after a very short time you will start to get faster, more aware and stronger.

still not convinced? Apart from the obvious benefts in terms of safety and awareness. DId you know that people who take regular exercise are mentally and physically better able to deal with some of the realities that life throws at us.

People who take part in regular physical activity: l have stronger muscles and bones l are much less likely to be overweight and have illnesses associated with obesity l have the ability to concentrate better at school or at work l have better self esteem l reduce the risk of depression and other mental illnesses

is it expensive, do i need special clothes? The Self Defence course is great value for money at £25 for adults and £20 for children, this includes a free club T Shirt to train in. You don’t need any specialist equipment, just a comfy pair of tracksuit bottoms or loose ftting sports pants to train in. Other than that you just need to bring yourself along and we will take care of the rest.

how do i sign up? We run courses throughout the year and you can start straightaway, all you need to do is go onto the Kesshin Kai website and follow the registration link. Whilst you are on our site check out some of students achievements and testimonials.

what’s involved in a self defence class? At Kesshin Kai we teach you awareness, speed, and agility. How to use an attackers weight against them, defence moves to block specifc types of attack, special moves to render an attacker unable to strike, and strategies to most importantly get you away to safety. We do not advocate carrying weapons, as often people who carry weapons for self defence end up getting hurt with their own weapon. One of the main emphasis we work on in classes is respect and we believe that by teaching our students to respect each other has a positive efect on their communities.

october/noVember

how long is the course? Courses are for one evening a week for four weeks, from the frst week we can guarantee you will start to feel better, you will be more efective at school or work, because you will already be one step nearer to being stronger physically and emotionally.

KESSHIN KAI MARTIAL ARTS WOULD LIKE TO SAY A HUGE THANK YOU TO THEIR SPONSORS: Pegasus, MGD, India, S&S Fireplaces, Alcatek and ADS Car Wash.
