La Feria ISD employees receive vaccine By Nelda Briones LFN
On March 2, 2021 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had determined that “vaccines are an important tool to help stop the COVID-19 pandemic,” and in order to address this important public health issue, the HHS Secretary directed all COVID-19 vaccination providers that are administering COVID-19 vaccine purchased by the United States as follows: All COVID-19 vaccination providers page 2 are directed and required to make available and administer, as one of the currently eligible groups, COVID-19 vaccine to those who work in pre-primary, primary, La Feria rallies to beat and secondary schools, Raymondville as well as Head Start and Early Head Start programs (including teachers, staff, and bus drivers) and those who work as or for licensed child care providers, including center-based page 5 and family care providers. Cameron County website, the county has been in communication with area school districts, charter schools, and others in an effort to help identify how many area teachers are in need of the COVID-19 vaccine. Cameron County will successfully allocate Moderna vaccines to the following school districts: Rio Hondo ISD, Santa Maria ISD, Marine Military Academy, Santa Rosa ISD, Jubilee Academies, La Feria ISD, South Texas ISD, Harmony Schools, Port Isabel ISD, Idea Public Schools, Los Fresnos CISD, Brownsville ISD, Harlingen CISD, San Benito CISD, and Neighbors in Need of Services, Inc. “For the past two months now, we have vaccinated individuals at our County clinics following the guidance and priority groups as identified by the State of Texas and the CDC. Teachers not being identified as a priority group has been a concern of ours and we’re glad to have received updated guidance from the State of Texas. We believe that vaccinating our teachers means we are one step closer in providing that safeguard not only in the classroom setting but also at home,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. On Saturday March 6, 2021, La Feria ISD in part-

nership with Cameron County and the City of La Feria were able to provide 160 doses of the Moderna vaccine to district employees that requested one. Seven of the district nurses administered the vaccines under the direction of Cameron County. There are about 100 additional vaccines that are needed to complete the needed vaccines for the rest of the staff in the district. The district is working with Cameron County in planning a second clinic to ensure all personnel have the opportunity to receive their vaccine.

Responding to older Texans hit particularly hard by the massive winter-storm power outage last month, AARP Texas and the Texas Legal Services Center are asking for immediate financial relief for residential electricity customers. Lower RGV families save $22M in dual enrollment college credit through Texas Southmost College
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (March 10, 2021) - When Sandra Tovar’s son was in middle school, they began discussing the advantages of taking dual credit courses at Harlingen High School South. As director of Guidance and Counseling at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, she has advised hundreds of families on how they can save both time and money if their child is ready to tackle collegelevel courses while still in high school. Dual credit courses are those that students take either at their high schools or on a college campus that count for both high school and college credit. Tovar’s son, Jacob, earned 28 college credits while in high school gaining confidence in his ability to succeed in college and saving approximately $4,500 in tuition and fees, since dual credit courses are offered at no cost to families. Since 2017, families have collectively saved
$22 million in college tuition and fees through dual credit partnerships between local school districts and Texas Southmost College (TSC). “Dual credit programs are an important pathway to earning college credit that TSC offers to our communities in Cameron and Willacy Counties,” said TSC President Jesús Roberto Rodríguez. “We appreciate the trust our superintendents and school district boards have put in Texas Southmost College to provide their students with highquality transfer courses.” From fall 2017 through fall 2020, Lower Rio Grande Valley students have enrolled in 137,004 semester credit hours. Each course, whether offered at the high school or on the TSC campus, contains the same course content and is taught with the same rigor as traditional college courses, and faculty must hold the same credentials as traditional college faculty. Merrill Hammons, BISD director for Col-
lege, Career and Military Readiness and Advanced Academics said he applauds TSC on the work it is doing to give his students and those across the Lower Rio Grande Valley this opportunity. “Many of our students come from low socioeconomic families and are first-generation college students, so exposing them to college early through dual enrollment is a large cost savings for them and their families and gives them the tools they need to work toward a higher education after high school,” said Hammons. “The number of students we have seen enroll in dual enrollment has increased substantially and we’re excited to continue this partnership and work together to give our students an easy transition into college.” According to Hammons, the number of BISD students who enroll annually in dual credit courses has increased by 5,000 students in the last five years and the district is on track to see continued ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

In the March 3, 2021 edition of La Feria News we incorrectly identified Graciela Garza as owner of SCI Texas Funerals, Inc. at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home & Memorial Park – a Dignity Memorial location in La Feria as a caption for her photo. Business Feature Graciela Garza by: Graciela Garza/bd
My inspiration to stay strong and pursue what I do is because of my loving son, Abraham Longoria. My name is Graciela Garza ( Gracie ) from Brownsville, Texas, and I am a Family Service Counselor with the SCI Texas Funeral, Inc. – I work at a Dignity Memorial location in La Feria, Texas. This is my story. I am a proud mother of five beautiful children. My son Arnold Longoria/Los Fresnos, Agapito Longoria/ Los Fresnos, Abraham (Deceased), Alexis Longoria /Los Fresnos, and my only beautiful daughter, Ashley Ann Longoria also from Los Fresnos, Texas. My children and their spouses and families are my life— In 2009, my son Abraham Longoria was in an unfortunate automobile accident. He abruptly passed away, shattering my heart and soul. It is the worst pain a parent can endure. Nothing will ever take its place. Today, almost 12 years later, my heart still hurts. But one thing remains the same and I continue to hang on to it, it is “faith.” I believe the enormous love my son and I shared along with the joy and memories we created, and above all, with the grace of God, I have learned to live (physically) without my Abraham. But emotionally, I know he is an Angel from above and is watching over my family and me. It goes without saying that due to my son’s passing, I have become a stronger person. His loving memory has given me the strength I need to move on with sincere compassion for others. So, today, I attribute my success as a Family Service Counselor at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home & Memorial Park – a Dignity Memorial location in La Feria, Texas to “him.” For over 20 years, I proudly process, coordinate, and pre-plan funeral arrangements for the many

residents in the surrounding communities. Throughout my tenure as a family service counselor, I have worked at different locations (Corpus Christi-Rio Grande Valley). The Valley is, and will always be, close to my heart. I passionately believe my empathy and overall understanding of life play a special role in what I do. My heart melts every time when making those final arrangements for a loved one. Year after year, I am touched by many families and almost always it brings me back to my own situation when I was making those frightful funeral
arrangements. I love what I do! My goal is to continue to facilitate and implement family funeral arrangement requests. My advice is to “preplan” this part of your life with whomever you choose. It is inevitable in life and certainly a “very important” piece to consider. Thank You to the families that have touched my heart! A Special Thanks to Abraham! It is because of You! The Knapp physical therapists have successfully treated many older adults – including some in their 90’s. For example, one patient in his 90’s could only walk very slowly, and in a lot of pain. The patient’s level of pain was an “8” on a scale of 10. After receiving four weeks of therapy at Knapp, the patient had a pain scale of 0 (zero) -- and could walk without pain.

As I write this, less than 25% of Texans have been vaccinated. I am not one of the chosen. But I am surrounded by them. Sometimes it is not easy. Their arms are sore, they are hot or cold, achy or tired. Frankly, sometimes I am sick of them being sick! I thought the vaccine was supposed to help. However, before it can help it has to hurt. Before the surgeon cures, she must cut. We say, “Like cures like.” To put it another way, sometimes we need some hair of the dog that bit us, or might bite us. That is what the vaccine is. While wandering in the wilderness, the Fsraelites were attacked by fiery snakes. For a cure, Moses fashioned a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Seeing another snake was the last thing that they wanted. But it was the cure. The vaccine makes us sick so we can be well. Makes sense.

increases. In addition to the advantages already stated, dual enrollment students are also able to complete a degree more quickly and can enter the workforce earlier, increasing their lifetime earnings. “We continue to expand our dual credit offerings with school districts based on their students’ interests,” said TSC Vice President for Instruction Joanna Kile. “For example, when our school districts asked for more course sections in economics, we added another economics instructor to our faculty to be able to meet this need.” In June 2020, TSC celebrated the first dual enrollment students to earn associate degrees since 2013. More than 30 students from the Brownsville Independent School District, Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District and Jubilee Leadership Academy earned associate degrees in General Studies, earning credits that will transfer to more specific programs such as business or ► CONTINUED from PAGE 3
criminal justice at a university. LFCISD Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said the partnership between TSC and LFCISD is a point of pride for the district and that dual enrollment is a mechanism for transformation. “Education holds a promise of forging a brighter future and I feel dual enrollment credit is the embodiment of that promise,” said Salazar. “It is both a shortterm and long-term reward for students who choose to enroll in courses with a level of rigor that prepares them for their post-secondary experience. Education is a great equalizer and dual enrollment students, regardless of their economic background, can look to the future with hope knowing that their success will be equal to their effort.” For more information about dual credit opportunities, please contact TSC’s Office of High School Programs and Services at (956) 295-3439 or your local high school counselor.

Pro tips for video editing By James Minson LFN
into the project media box is highly recommended. Never EVER import your files straight into your timeline. (see 2) This will lead to further problems that you don’t want to deal with.
When editing video, there are always a few small things to keep in mind. Whether you’re advertising, creating entertainment, editing a live event, or even making a social media post, these tips can be useful when trying to keep a professional, good-looking reputation/portfolio. There are numerous video editing programs, such as; Adobe Premier, Wondershare Filmora, Sony Hollywood, PowerDirector, etc. Yet they all essentially share the same capabilities. When putting together a video project, here are a few things to keep in mind.
2. Timeline Your timeline is the main source for your project. Once your clip is in the timeline, it’s visible in your video project. Before you put your imported file straight into the timeline, it’s important that you know these tricks first. Once you have your videos imported into the project media box, you’ll be able to choose a portion of that clip to add to your timeline. Click on your imported video that is in your project media box, and it will show in your preview window. (preview window is where you view your project as a whole) Is your preview window, you’ll see brackets across the bottom of the screen. The open bracket is your starting point of the clip that you want to add to your timeline. The close bracket is the ending point. It’s not too hard to figure out, but it is a feature that is important to know. Once you have the portion of the video selected, you can easily drag them to your timeline. If you drag from the screen, you will bring
1. Importing When you first open your program, chances are you want to add some sort of file/files to your program that you want to edit. The process of inserting files into a program such as this is called “importing”. In most programs, you’ll find a project media box used for importing files. You can either drag a file from a source to this box, or you can find an import button that you can use. The import button will open your Files application. From there you can choose files to import. Importing files
the video and audio to your timeline. There are additional options if you want them separate.
4. Rendering
try to play/preview your video project. Sometimes it will be a green flash, or a slight pause, whatever the case may be, there is a solution. This is a very simple, yet very crucial step to video editing. When you are experiencing these small glitches in your video project, notice across the top of your timeline, there is a horizontal red or orange line. The line tells you how complicated this file/clip is. The more you edit it, the more complex it gets. The more complex it gets, the harder it is for your computer to play/ preview. When the line is red, that is about as bad as it can get. When the line is orange, it isn’t too bad but might still cause problems. The goal is to get that line green. The way to do that is click anywhere on your timeline, (not on a clip) and hit the enter key. This is an act called “rendering”. Your program will then automatically create/export those individual files in a separate folder that you do not see. Once those rendered files are created, your line will turn green, and your video project will be ready to view and preview.
When you have your clips in the timeline with transitions added to them, sometimes your computer might glitch when you
More information is available on our website. Keep an eye out for next week’s addition to read more tricks and steps for video editing.
3. Transitions Once you have multiple photos/videos in your timeline, you’ll want to add transitions and animations so that your video project will smoothly transition from one clip to the other rather than a sharp, sudden switch. In some programs, is it easy to find the transitions. Although in some, they are more hidden than others. Usually you can find it under the “Transition” tab across the top of your program. Once you find your transitions tab, you can easily add whichever transitions you’d like to add to your clips. Keep your eyes open for the preview window. It will let you preview what the different transitions will look like before you add them. Once you review and choose your transition, click the add transition button and choose which clip you’d like to add it to. It’s as easy as that.
