Canal fishing contest in Mercedes The Mercedes Lions Club will hold a Canal Fishing Contest from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on April 17, 2021 at the main canal from 10th to 17th Streets in Mercedes. Entry fee is $5.00 and there will be prizes awarded in each of the following categories: Heaviest fish, Longest fish, and Most Unusual fish.

Registration for children and adults will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the day of the tournament. The contest is open to all.

La Feria as a welding industry leader

Welding is not so male-dominated after all

According to the BLS in 2017, that was the percentage of women in the welding industry. And it’s nowhere near the highest it’s ever been—in World War II, women comprised as much as 25% of the workforce in welding.

Here in Texas, welding is one of those jobs people typically associate with a male-dominated workforce.

The statistics back up those claims. And it isn’t just reflected in the number of people who work in welding. Data suggests the average male welder’s salary is $45,961—while the average female welder’s salary is only $31,961.

It paints a grisly picture of the state of work equality in Texas. That was one of the reasons I founded the Southern Industrial Careers Center, based in La Feria. Today,

La Feria is slowly changing the narrative that welding is a completely maledominated industry!

La Feria and SICC are promoting the potential of careers in welding and fabrication. We have a female team and more and more female students.

A former welder myself, I saw just how low the interest was in trade occupations. But it’s not just a matter of interest.

When someone wants a good-paying welding job, the resources were rarely there to help people receive the instruction necessary to land a lucrative job.

Welding should lead Texas and other states when it comes to expanding industrial job opportunities for all genders. 60% of the products and machines used across the United States require welding to some degree or another.

But how can females break through in welding, which has traditionally been such a male-dominated industry? What will it take? What are the challenges to overcome?

The Female Team at SICC What happens when there’s a massive

disconnect between employers and employees?

How do you connect two very disconnected populations?

I figured change starts at home. That’s why the SICC is featuring a female team in a male-dominated industry. Because the jobs we choose are downstream of society’s expectations, it’s up to teams like this to change the way people think about women in traditionally maledominated industries.

At the forefront: providing women with the resources they need to pursue a career in earnest.

Who is going to want to join a male-dominated industry if they don’t feel that they have the support necessary to be one of the 4.5% in the minority? In speaking with women, I discovered that support is crucial if they’re going to feel empowered to make a change.

“Knowledge is power in a male-dominated field,” said Crystal Quintero, the Edinburg Campus Director.

“As a director, I must present the advantages of the welding field to a prospective student. I feel empowered to know so much about a career that is

male dominated and being able to make students eager and excited to learn makes my job that more satisfying.”

How to Pay for Welders’ Training The problem is in finding the resources welders need. Welder training is intensive—and highly specialized—and requires funding to do it right.

For many aspiring welders, the funding issue is a non-starter. They assume that because of the heavy resources required to train in welding, it’s not even a viable career path for them. At the Southern Industrial Career Center, we’re looking to change that. In a partnership with personalized financing and/or state grants we look to help explore realistic avenues for men/ women who want to learn how to weld. And we provide resources to help secure confidence that once they’re enrolled and graduated, they’ll have closed the skills gap between them and their ideal job. With just an eight-week program, we also think it’s worth seeking out the education that can fit into demanding schedules.

Having a team of awesome ladies in charge of our school management helps me keep refreshed with unbiased opinions.

And here’s what I tell women who are seeking out positions in welding: · Seek out your options first—before making assumptions. I get it.

4.5% is a dismal and even depressing number. But it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, either. Seek out your options for financing and enrollment in a welding school before you make a decision that will affect your career path. · Don’t make assumptions about what you can’t do. We’ve seen countless women empower themselves with the funding, resources, and know-how to make it in a male-dominated industry. · Be a disruptor. Be willing to embrace the disruptor’s role. “The biggest challenge is trying to prove yourself every time,” said Quintero. Now that she’s an admissions representative, she says that she might not know how to weld, but she knows how to advise women who do want to become welders. And she recommends overcoming

that challenge by taking it one step at a time.

4.5% is just a number.

The reality is that there is already a team of female welders out there who are looking to disrupt the status quo and change a traditionally male-dominated job into something for all genders. It just requires a little support, some financial know-how, and a willingness to be a disruptor.

Texas Folklife Announces the 15th Annual Big Squeeze Accordion Competition

I live in a nice neighborhood, not a gated community but a good one. Last Sunday, interstate traffic was rerouted through my neighborhood. Cars were creeping down the streets and side streets, many were lost. One man finally stopped and asked.

“How do I get out of here?”

I always wanted to get in the neighborhood. I thought everyone did. Not this guy, he wanted out.

It is a nice place to live, but it is not his place, it is not home.

I think most of the people at the border would rather be home, if their homes were good places, or safe places. There is a haunting warning in Exodus, “Remember you were once strangers in Egypt.”

That is what exodus means, a way out of here. Even when they found a way out of Egypt, the Hebrews were warned to never forget what it was like to be someplace other than home. I often forget that.

younger contestants in the last few years and we want to balance the competition and be able to award an equal amount of semi-finalists and finalists in both age categories. Finally, in 2021 the Big Squeeze will be entirely virtual to maintain the health and safety of our participants, their families and our staff.

Other changes made in recent years: we will have the addition of the Conjunto Semi-Finals Round, due to the overwhelming amount of conjunto entries in recent years. We will also award a small amount of Rising Star awards to talented players that don’t happen to make it to the finals, especially in the younger age brackets. This is to further give recognition to the difference in skill at different ages. These recipients will be notified after the semifinals on April 17 and will be eligible to apply again in 2022 for the contest.

Contestants can have one accompanist during their audition which is not provided

by Texas Folklife. This accompanist cannot be drums or electric bass and the contestant cannot sing so as to focus on the accordion performance in the videotaped audition.

As always, The Big Squeeze Contest and Texas Folklife strive to represent the state’s geographic and cultural diversity.

La Feria gearing up for the playoffs Lionettes blank

By KEVIN NARRO La Feria News LA FERIA-The Lionettes are back in the playoffs.

The Lionettes will meet Raymonville in the Class 4A bi-district round at Raymondville.

The Lionettes finished second in district with a 8-3 overall record.

This year’s club was led by freshman midfielder Cassandra Jolee Garza who broke out as a freshman and led the team in goals with 14 and collected five

assists.

Junior forward Misrrain Hazel Granado is second on the team in goals with 13 and also collected five assists. Between the pipes, junior goalie Taylor Garza recorded 19 saves.

“We have a great group

of young ladies,” said La Feria coach Jesus Escherria. “They have done an excellent job of doing what is best for the team all season long. We are excited and ready to have earned a spot to compete in the playoffs.”

LA FERIA-After taking a week off with Spring Break in the mix, La Feria picked up where they left off.

The Lionettes picked up a 10-0 win in six innings at Hidalgo.

La Feria scored five runs in the second inning, one

each in the third and fifth and later scored three runs in the sixth inning.

Hayaris Jimenez led the offense with three hits and two RBI. Railee Carvajel also collected three hits in the win.

In the circle, Beanka Galan threw six innings of one-hit ball, yielding two walks and fanned 11 Lady Pirates.

Balzadua best of the best David Balzadua of Santa Rosa was selected as the US Army Player of the Game for the Best of the Best Showcase held Sunday March 21. The Best of the Best Showcase invited top basketball players from the RGV to play against each other in a special even on the Island.

30 boys and 30 girls were invited to participate. Two teams for each

gender were chosen and played against each other for four quarters.

The games were filmed and broadcast by Rio Sports Live. You can still watch those games on the Rio Sports live YouTube channel.

Also representing west Cameron County was Chris Vela of Santa Rosa, CJ Olivares of Santa Rosa and Bernardino Castellanos of Santa Maria.

In accordance with the Order of the Office of the Governor issued March 16, 2020, the City of La Feria will conduct the meeting and provide audio/telephonic availability for the public using live stream in order to advance the public health goal of limiting face-to-face meetings (also called “social distancing”) to slow the spread of the Coronavirus (also known as Covid-19).
