Covid-19 Vaccine for everyone becoming possible

President Biden made a pledge on Tuesday March 2 to have enough Covid-19 vaccine doses for all American adults by the end of May this year. This would be a huge step in the recovery from the pandemic. Recent developments make this time frame look possible. The first vaccine to be approved for the public in the US was the one produced by Pfizer. That vaccine started being adminsitered December 11, 2021. Later in December the Moderna produced vaccine was approved. Both of these vaccines are administered in two doses either 21 or 28 days apart. On February 27 of this year, the Johnson & Johnson (JnJ) produced vaccine was approved for use in the US. Not only is this a new supply chain for vaccines, but this one
is administered in a single dose and can be stored for a much longer time in a regular refrigerator. Because of the intense demand for this vaccine, JnJ partnered with drug manufacturer Merck to deliver doses more quickly. The current goal is for JnJ and Merck to deliver 100 million doses by the end of May this year. The United States Currently has about 260 million adults. According to a CDC report over 32 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and another 30 million have recieved their first dose of a two dose vaccination. Over 2 million doses are being administered across the united states every day. Most of these vaccinations are from the Pfizer and Moderna Vaccines. Currently about 8.6% of adult Texans have been

fully vaccinated with another 7.3% having recieved just the first dose. AstraZeneca and Novavax have also submitted for US approval. AstraZeneca’s Vaccine is already approved in Europe and the UK. Novavax is still in the results period of its first trials. Supply should not be a problem very soon. There are still logistical challenges in vaccine delivery and storage. These are known issues that have been handled so far with
current distribution. A new challenge will be getting healthier, less at risk, and less worried people to take the time to get vaccinated. This will likely take a marketing campaign that was not need up to now. This supply will still be important. According to Bloomberg’s vaccine tracker only Israel has a higher percentage of vacinated citizens than the United State. All other countries have less than 5% fully vaccinated. For
some countries the major issues are supply, safety and logistics. But for some it is economics. These vaccines are produced at a cost of $10-25 per dose. Add to that cost, personell and equiment for delivery, the cost per person vaccinated could easily be over $30. That would mean $300 millon to vaccinate 10 million adults. That could be difficult for some countries after the passed year of a depressed economy. Foriegn aid will certainly be needed.

ition and fees, since dual credit courses are offered at no cost to families. Since 2017, families have collectively saved $22 million in college tuition and fees through dual credit partnerships between local school districts and Texas Southmost College (TSC). “Dual credit programs are an important pathway to earning college credit that TSC offers to our communities in Cameron and Willacy Counties,” said TSC President Jesús Roberto Rodríguez. “We appreciate the trust our superintendents and school district boards have put in Texas Southmost College to provide their students with highquality transfer courses.” From fall 2017 through fall 2020, Lower Rio Grande Valley students have enrolled in 137,004 semester credit hours. content and is taught with the same rigor as traditional college courses, and faculty must hold the same credentials as traditional college faculty. Merrill Hammons, BISD director for College, Career and Military Readiness and Advanced Academics said he applauds TSC on the work
it is doing to give his students and those across the Lower Rio Grande Valley this opportunity. “Many of our students come from low socioeconomic families and are first-generation college students, so exposing them to college early through dual enrollment is a large cost savings for them and their families
and gives them the tools they need to work toward a higher education after high school,” said Hammons. “The number of students we have seen enroll in dual enrollment has increased substantially and we’re excited to continue this partnership and work together to give our students an easy transition into college.” ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

RGV families save $22M with dual enrollment By Landon Jennings LFN According to Hammons, the number of BISD students who enroll annually in dual credit courses has increased by 5,000 students in the last five years and the district is on track to see continued increases. In addition to the advantages already stated, dual enrollment students are also able to complete a degree more quickly and can enter the workforce earlier, increasing their lifetime earnings. “We continue to expand our dual credit offerings with school districts based on their students’ interests,” said TSC Vice President for Instruction Joanna Kile. “For example, when our school districts asked for more course sections
in economics, we added another economics instructor to our faculty to be able to meet this need.” In June 2020, TSC celebrated the first dual enrollment students to earn associate degrees since 2013. More than 30 students from the Brownsville Independent School District, Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District and Jubilee Leadership Academy earned associate degrees in General Studies, earning credits that will transfer to more specific programs such as business or criminal justice at a university. LFCISD Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said the partnership between TSC and LFCISD is a point of pride for the district and that dual enrollment is a mechanism
for transformation. “Education holds a promise of forging a brighter future and I feel dual enrollment credit is the embodiment of that promise,” said Salazar. “It is both a short-term and long-term reward for students who choose to enroll in courses with a level of rigor that prepares them for their post-secondary experience. Education is a great equalizer and dual enrollment students, regardless of their economic background, can look to the future with hope knowing that their success will be equal to their effort.” For more information about dual credit opportunities, please contact TSC’s Office of High School Programs and Services at (956) 2953439 or your local high school counselor.

Pro tips for video editing By James Minson LFN When editing video, there are always a few small things to keep in mind. Whether you’re advertising, creating entertainment, editing a live event, or even making a social media post, these tips can be useful when trying to keep a professional, good-looking reputation/portfolio. There are numerous video editing programs, such as; Adobe Premier, Wondershare Filmora, Sony Hollywood, PowerDirector, etc. Yet they all essentially share the same capabilities. When putting together a video project, here are a few things to keep in mind. 1. Importing When you first open your program, chances are you want to add some sort of file/files to your program that you want to edit. The process of inserting files into a program such as this is called “importing”. In most programs, you’ll find
a project media box used for importing files. You can either drag a file from a source to this box, or you can find an import button that you can use. The import button will open your Files application. From there you can choose files to import. Importing files into the project media box is highly recommended. Never EVER import your files straight into your timeline. (see 2) This will lead to further problems that you don’t want to deal with. 2. Timeline Your timeline is the main source for your project. Once your clip is in the timeline, it’s visible in your video project. Before you put your imported file straight into the timeline, it’s important that you know these tricks first. Once you have your videos imported into the project media box, you’ll be able to choose a portion of that clip to add to your timeline. Click on your imported video that is in your project media
box, and it will show in your preview window. (preview window is where you view your project as a whole) Is your preview window, you’ll see brackets across the bottom of the screen. The open bracket is your starting point of the clip that you want to add to your timeline. The close bracket is the ending point. It’s not too hard to figure out, but it is a feature that is important to know. Once you have the portion of the video selected, you can easily drag them to your timeline. If you drag from the screen, you will bring the video and audio to your timeline. There are additional options if you want them separate. 3. Transitions Once you have multiple photos/videos in your timeline, you’ll want to add transitions and animations so that your video project will smoothly transition from one clip to the other rather than a sharp, sudden switch. In some programs,
is it easy to find the transitions. Although in some, they are more hidden than others. Usually you can find it under the “Transition” tab across the top of your program. Once you find your transitions tab, you can easily add whichever transitions you’d like to add to your clips. Keep your eyes open for the preview window. It will let you preview what the different transitions will look like before you add them. Once you review and choose your transition, click the add transition button and choose which clip you’d like to add it to. It’s as easy as that. 4. Rendering When you have your clips in the timeline with transitions added to them, sometimes your computer might glitch when you try to play/preview your video project. Sometimes it will be a green flash, or a slight pause, whatever the case may be, there is a solution. This is a very simple, yet very crucial step
to video editing. When you are experiencing these small glitches in your video project, notice across the top of your timeline, there is a horizontal red or orange line. The line tells you how complicated this file/clip is. The more you edit it, the more complex it gets. The more complex it gets, the harder it is for your computer to play/preview. When the line is red, that is about as bad as it can get. When the line is orange, it isn’t too bad but might still cause problems. The goal is to get that line green. The way to do that is
click anywhere on your timeline, (not on a clip) and hit the enter key. This is an act called “rendering”. Your program will then automatically create/export those individual files in a separate folder that you do not see. Once those rendered files are created, your line will turn green, and your video project will be ready to view and preview. More information is available on our website. Keep an eye out for next week’s addition to read more tricks and steps for video editing.

Ask Our Dentists Q: I have a 1yr old baby. My friend has a baby, same age, and has already taken the baby to see the dentist. Isn’t this too early? At what age should we begin seeing the dentist?
by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Dr. Adam Lalonde
I recommend that you begin cleaning your baby’s teeth with a soft cloth or the smallest baby’s toothbrush as soon as they come out. Clean teeth at least once a day; it’s best to clean them before bedtime. It’s also good introducing the concept of cleaning teeth to your children as early as possible so that they are comfortable with it.
At about age 2, you should start putting f luoride toothpaste on your child’s toothbrush. Use only a peasize drop of toothpaste and not more. Buy only those toothpastes designated for babies – do not use adult toothpaste. Baby toothpastes have a lesser amount of fluoride and easier for baby to digest, if swallowed. Since babies’ teeth come in at different ages, there’s no magic age number to bring them to their first dental visit. It is best to see the dentist as soon as you comfortably can so that baby can begin getting familiar with dental visits. Age 2-4 yrs is generally a good age range for baby’s first dental visit. Always remember, young children cannot get their teeth clean by themselves until they are about 7 or 8 years old. Try brushing their teeth first then let them finish on their own, with your guidance. CDC on vaccinations On March 2, 2021 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had determined that “vaccines are an important tool to help stop the COVID-19 pandemic,” and in order to address this important public health issue, the HHS Secretary directed all COVID-19 vaccination providers that are administering COVID-19 vaccine purchased by the United States as follows: All COVID-19 vaccination providers are directed and required to make available and administer, as one of the currently eligible groups, COVID-19 vaccine to those who work in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, as well as Head Start and Early Head Start programs (including teachers, staff, and bus drivers) and those who work as or for licensed child care providers, including center-based and family care providers. The policy change came after President Joe
Biden urged states to prioritize teachers on vaccination lists. “My challenge is this, we want every educator, school staff member, child care worker to receive at least one shot by the end of the month of March,” Biden said at a recent news conference. According to the county website, Cameron County has been in communication with area school districts, charter schools, and others in an effort to help identify how many area teachers are in need of the COVID-19 vaccine. Cameron County will successfully allocate Moderna vaccines to the following school districts: Rio Hondo ISD, Santa Maria ISD, Marine Military Academy, Santa Rosa ISD, Jubilee Academies, La Feria ISD, South Texas ISD, Harmony Schools, Port Isabel ISD, Idea Public Schools, Los Fresnos CISD, Brownsville ISD, Harlingen CISD,
San Benito CISD, and Neighbors in Need of Services, Inc. “For the past two months now, we have vaccinated individuals at our County clinics following the guidance and priority groups as identified by the State of Texas and the CDC. Teachers not being identified as a priority group has been a concern of ours and we’re glad to have received updated guidance from the State of Texas. We believe that vaccinating our teachers means we are one step closer in providing that safeguard not only in the classroom setting but also at home,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr.
