Sci-Fi movies like Back to the Future are what it seems we’re living in now. Sci-Fi Technology seems to have emerged into our reality, with flying cars, underground high-speed tunnels, and spaceships just around the corner! What will the Rio Grande Valley be like in five, ten years? Back in May, Starship serial number 15 (SN15) successfully completed SpaceX’s fifth highaltitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. The Starship spacecraft is a “super-heavy-

lift launch vehicle” under development by SpaceX being tested since 2019 and had its first successful flight in August of 2020. It’s both for crew transportation and cargo carrying. Starship is a two stage rocket, and completely

The picture shows the VTOL having six large turbines surrounding the aircraft, and two large turbines in the rear for thrust. 5 passenger plus pilot, Micro propellers for reduced noise during take-off and landing, and an estimated 500 mile+ range. The final version will be based on an FAA-approved airframe which may alter the commercial ready VTOL. Picture pulled from the Paragon VTOL website: https://paragonvtol.com/paragonsoar

tunnel would also allow the public access to parts of the Boca Chica beach that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to access. This idea was suggested by The Boring Company, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, though this proposal may not gain much traction. “(Paying for it) is not something that the county would be interested in,” Sepulveda told The Herald. “That would be prohibitive for us. We really didn’t get into those details, but once we do we wouldn’t be able to participate with any type of funding.” Furthermore,

they said, “Keep in mind that the ship channel goes by there, so that depth would have to be pretty far down.” This wouldn’t be The Boring Company’s first underground tunnel. Currently their only underground tunnel is in Las Vegas, stretching to be 2 miles long and costing roughly $50 million to build. Though in comparison, the proposal of this tunnel would only be a third of a mile, Sepulveda told The Herald,

options, solutions, are out there. I’m not sure what amount, if any, we can bring to the table financially.” And now more recently a company called Paragon VTOL has placed its headquarter in Brownsville. Paragon VTOL’s vision is to have flying drones that have the capacity to taxi

people. In a conference held in Brownsville Tx., Dwight Smith, founder of Paragon VTOL LLC, Explains why He chose Brownsville, “...It all comes down to leadership. When I made the decision to come down to Brownsville, it was because of the leadership.”

OBITUARY

George M. Burns

January 17, 1925-September 21, 2021 George M. Burns, 96, born January 17, 1925, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, September 21, 2021. George was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Norma Dawson Burns. He is survived by his children, Colleen Catlett (Gene) of Pt. Isabel and Bob Burns of Harlingen; grandchildren, Kevin Catlett (Tamara) of Kingsland; Kandis Hendricks (Carl) of Austin, Robby Burns, Christopher Burns of Ardmore, OK; and, 7 great grandchildren. George, the fifth of eight children, was born in Harlingen, Texas to the late Oyer and Nora Burns. He grew up in the surrounding area of Stuart Place and Primera. Growing up during the Great Depression era, he began working at an early age to help support the family. He married Norma K. Dawson on October 11, 1943 just before enlisting in the United States Navy to proudly serve his country during World War II. After the war, George and Norma settled back in Harlingen where they started their family. After several types of employment, George ended up in the Oil Industry. First in transporting it, then as a dispatcher for transportation. In 1971, he moved to Houston where he became a District Manager of Transportation with Oxydental Petroleum for the Gulf District, which extended from Texas to the Florida Panhandle. He and Norma made their home in Houston for the next 18 years. After his retirement in 1989, they returned to La Feria. George was an avid hunter and managed several leases over the years. He also enjoyed being the camp cook and always had something delicious on the grill. He and Norma hosted many weekend gatherings in their backyard around the grill. George was known affectionately by the family as “The Wagon Master”. No matter what the occasion, he always managed to get everyone moving in the right direction. After retirement, George put his skills to work as a volunteer at the Harlingen Elks Lodge. He will always be remembered as a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. The Burns family wishes to extend sincere thanks to Mrs. Alma Pimentel and her staff who cared for George for the last 5 years of his life. Also a heartfelt thank you to staff of Kindred Hospice for their compassionate care. A graveside service will take place Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at La Feria Cemetery. Following the graveside service, George will be laid to rest with full military honors. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Bob Burns, Robby Burns, Gene Catlett, Kevin Catlett, Riley Catlett, and Carl Hendricks. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889, 1426 S. Commerce St., Harlingen TX 78550 or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 W. Business 77, San Benito, TX 78586. www.sanbenitofuneralhome. com 956.361.9192

First Baptist Church, La Feria I have to fly somewhere next week. I used to dread the turbulence outside. Now I dread the turbulence inside the plane. Passengers, angry about mask mandates and fearing vaccine mandates are taking it out on flight attendants. An airline offers self-defense classes. Another, bans unruly passengers for life. Television preacher Kenneth Copland has a plan. He is asking supporters for the money to buy a private jet. That way he can avoid mask or vaccine mandates, which he calls the mark of the beast. It would seem that simply acting Christ like on airplanes would be cheaper. Quacks tend to see the mark of the beast on everything from credit cards to past presidents. These days the only beasts on airplanes are those who behave beastly. I plan to be on my best behavior. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

The Next Chapter Poem Nighttime

The moon and the stars that shine in harmony; the dew on the leaves that fall so gently. As the tiniest animal burrow into its nest, the baby owl tries to pass the hunting test. The moon is finally full, and everything is still. Goodnight to everyone this day has been done, now I will rest my head and wait till dawn. Poem by Selene Olguin
