(HARLINGEN, Texas) - Amiel Basave, of La Feria, began her career as a surgical technologist with Rio Grande Regional Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center a few months ago. She graduated in August 2021 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology from Texas State Technical College. When Basave was doing her student clinicals at Rio Grande Regional Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center, she found the company culture there to be very heartwarming. “During my clinicals the employees were very helpful and willing to teach,” she said. Basave recalled having difficulty as a student in the area of ophthalmic eye
surgery. Now it is an area that she really enjoys. Jeff Randall, director of nurses for the Rio Grande Regional Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center, remarked that Basave has an incredible work ethic. “What I truly appreciate is that she has a willingness to get her hands dirty and keep going,” he said. One of the most important things that Basave incorporates into her job is sterile technique. This involves proper handwashing, the use of a sterile field, the use of sterile gloves for application, and the use of sterile instruments. “My perspective is that I imagine it is one of my own family members going into surgery,” she said. “I think of how I would want them to be treated. This is what I
do for our patients.” Basave describes the feeling of working in the operating room as very exciting. “You will always learn something new,” she said. “As a surgical technician, your focus is to ensure that everything is perfect.” According to onetonline. org, surgical technologists can earn a yearly median salary of more than $49,000 in Texas. Jobs are expected to increase 14% in the state by 2028. TSTC offers Surgical Technology at the Harlingen campus, where students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree. Registration for the spring semester is underway. For more information, visit tstc.edu.

hand gifts out to children along with our very own Mayor of La Feria, Olga Maldonado. The tables were full of gifts for all the kids. The Police Department received a sum of around 1,200 toys that they passed out. Making sure everyone gets a quality toy during the holidays this year. They also had great holiday music to help spread the cheer as well as a place to take pictures with Santa Claus. The backdrops were custom made by ‘It’s a Jolly Thing’.
Also, there were several businesses that donated a sponsor spot on the “Merry Christmas & Happy New Year” truck banner, which helped make this Gift Giveaway event possible! Thank you to all the sponsors that helped make someone’s day, and most importantly thank you to our Police Department for keeping our children safe and handing out gifts during the Holidays!

December weather in Texas can be a gift or a lump of coal in your stocking. Unfortunately, this year, farmers and ranchers in the Texas Panhandle would soon just return what Mother Nature gave them last
week. A lingering drought set the stage. A fierce wind storm finished the job, destroying much of the area’s wheat crop. Green fields are now brown and likely a total loss for many farmers. High winds also fanned the flames of wildfires, threatening farms, ranches and
communities. Blowing dust, smoke from wildfires and heavy winds caused accidents and power outages. The Panhandle hasn’t received rain in nearly 70 days. The drought, punctuated by the wind storm, was just too much for the struggling wheat. But the failed wheat crop comes on the
heels of one of the best cotton crops for some Panhandle farmers. Such is the nature of farming in Texas. You embrace the good years. A farmer’s faith, hope and love keep them going. That’s appropriate for the month of December.

Seeking An Anti-Mosquito Molecule Two Utrgv Freshmen Take Top
Spots At Mariachi Vargas Competition By Victoria Brito Morales

Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists are on a mission to create a new weapon against diseasecarrying mosquitoes. A close-up photo of a mosquito The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a known carrier of diseases that pose a threat to humans. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Gabriel Hamer) Patricia Pietrantonio, Ph.D., a Texas A&M AgriLife Research Fellow and professor in the Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is leading a three-year project toward a new method of mosquito control. The project will focus on Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus species, which occur in Texas and around the globe. The team aims to identify molecules that can protect deployed U.S. armed forces members from mosquito bites and vector-borne diseases like Zika fever, yellow fever, Dengue fever and West Nile. A $672,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, DOD, is funding the study. Most mosquito control utilizes pyrethroid-based products or malathion, an organophosphate, Pietrantonio said, but the DOD is looking for insecticides with new modes of action because
the disease-carrying insects are developing resistance to those insecticides. Female mosquitoes, especially in known disease-vector species, bite to feed on blood, which is necessary for egg production, she said. The study is based on established research but focuses on a novel approach relating to receptors in mosquito mouth parts, legs and internal organs. “We really don’t know what will happen at this point, but this is of interest because our research is investigating a novel mode of action for mosquito control,” she said. “This is a completely different approach that will be a multidisciplinary effort with many different players.” Toxic molecule provides potential against mosquito bites Pietrantonio said AgriLife Research scientists and graduate students will be a part of the project in collaboration with the laboratory of James Sacchettini, Ph.D., the Rodger J. Wolfe-Welch Foundation Chair and professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and collaborators in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M and in Portugal. The project aims to test small synthetic molecules that may be used to create a compound toxic to
mosquitoes. Pietrantonio and her team have screened more than 20,000 molecules and discovered several that could potentially inhibit bites, modify mosquito behavior or kill the insects. The project will test those molecules’ impact on female mosquitoes. To test efficacy, the team will offer the chemicals to mosquitoes in a feeding mix of blood or will apply them directly to the insect. Pietrantonio hypothesizes that a successful chemical will prevent bites by disrupting mosquitoes’ sensory signals. In prior testing, the team conducted a high-throughput screen of chemical libraries owned by AgriLife Research. From that screen, three molecules ended up causing paralysis of the hindgut in female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are known carriers of yellow fever and other diseases. Those molecules and others will be tested further with the goal of producing a protective compound. “Right now, we are trying to see if the synthetic molecules chosen that have druglike characteristics will affect the mosquitoes,” she said. “Whether they interrupt feeding or lead to paralysis or death, we want to determine how they might impact the insect and prevent bites.”
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – DEC. 21, 2021 – Just like an arpeggio, two UTRGV freshman singers scored the top two highest spots at the 27th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Natalie Carmona, an exercise science major, and Jenika Montes, an integrated science major, were the victors of the College/ University category of the competition. The event, held annually in San Antonio, showcases the talents of elementary, middle school, high school and college/university mariachi musicians. Held Dec. 3-4, it is the largest and most competitive competition of its kind and attracts mariachis from all over the world. Last year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the competitions were held virtually. This year, it returned to the main stage at the Lila Crocker Theatre in San Antonio. For the contest, contestants submit a video audition in the preliminary phase of the competition. These entries are judged by members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Then, finalists are invited to belt it out on the main stage for the final round of the competition. THE SINGERS The champion of the college/university category and McAllen native, Carmona, is member of the UTRGV Mariachi Aztlán. She has been singing since she was a young child. Carmona competed with the song “Ay Mi Mexico” by Mariachi Divas. Her crescendo to

the top spot comes after previously competing in the last four competitions. Last year, she also placed first, but in the high school category. “I feel very honored to have placed first in the college division because this was my first year competing in the university level and in the university level everyone is very well skilled and were older and had more experience than myself,” Carmona said. Montes, a classmate of Carmona’s from McAllen High School and a member of the UTRGV Mariachi Juvenil, came in second place. Last year, she competed for the first time in the high school category and came in third place. “Music has always been a passion of mine since I was very young, I started in mariachi
probably like a year and a half ago,” Montes said. For the competition, she also sang a song by Mariachi Divas called “Es Mentira.” “It was my first time competing in person so to be able to get second place is crazy,” Montes said. “I can't even explain it.” Dr. Dahlia Guerra, UTRGV assistant vice president of Public Art, who founded the Mariachi Aztlán said Carmona and Montes showed the forte of the mariachi talent at UTRGV. “Not only did our fabulous students win first and second place, but the Mariachi Aztlán were invited guests to perform at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Concert with Lupita Infante, granddaughter of the beloved Mexican icon, Pedro Infante,” Guerra said.

First Baptist Church, La Feria As a holiday, Christmas is over. And most of us are over Christmas. We are ready to pronounce the proverbial petition, “Happy New Year.” Yet, we wonder, “Will the new year be a happy one?” A variant virus is coming in with the new year. Omnicon threatens all, particularly the unvaccinated. Still, 2022 will not be the same as the last years. We are not the same people. We have experience with viruses and the tools to stay safe, including vaccines and boosters. If we will use them is yet to be seen? With our experience and tools, we also have the scriptures that tell of people who have faced floods and fires, plagues and persecutions. God said to those people what God says to us. “Fear not.” Someone counted 365 “Fear Nots” in the Bible. One for each day. The count may be wrong but the sentiment is correct. No fear is the best way to face a new year. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Hard Fought Battle
By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News The La Feria Lions Basketball team traveled to Edcouch-Elsa to take on the Yellow Jackets in another round of non-district play. A rematch of the Consolation semi-final at
the 2021 C.E. Vail Classic in which the Yellow Jackets defeated the Lions 48-40. Early on, the Yellow Jackets, who have a fast paced tempo of play, took the fight to La Feria to gain control. The Lions battled back to change the course of the matchup and
battled throughout the first half. In the second quarter, Edcouch continued to regain control of the game heading into the First Half. Late in the half. La Feria began to answer back to limit the offensive attack of the Yellow Jackets. Going into the third
quarter, Edcouch took control early on again to set the tempo the Yellow Jackets had been trying to accomplish all game, which was a fast paced offense followed by a high pressure defense. La Feria started to counter attack and find a way through
the defense of Edcouch to try to close out the lead by the Yellow Jackets. In a fourth quarter that was to determine the course of the game. La Feria took control and maintained it for the majority of the quarter until a late surge of offense by the Yellow Jackets secured
the win 48 to 40. Next up for the Lions is a matchup against the Progreso Red Ants on New Year’s eve before La Feria kicks off District Play January 18th against Hidalgo.
StatePoint Have you ever been reluctant to try a new hobby because you were worried you would spend a lot of money on gear, supplies and other start-up costs only to lose interest? Here are five great ways to explore hobbies more affordably: 1. Language exchange: Rather than purchase pricey software or attend in-person classes, consider finding a language exchange partner. Take turns conversing in each other’s native tongue and pick up important communication skills -- and maybe a friend -- along the way. 2. Built-in music lessons: Music lessons and instruments can be expensive. However, you don’t need a fullsized grand piano or multiple sessions with a private teacher to master the instrument. Today, digital keyboards can offer a high-quality piano sound at a price that’s within reach, along with features specifically designed for building the skills of novices. For example, Casio keyboards are affordable
and some models are outfitted with Casio’s Step-up Lesson System, which can help you learn built-in songs at your own pace. Additionally, the LCD display teaches both music notation and correct hand positioning, while an innovative scoring system allows you to track your progress. By connecting to the free Chordana Play iOS/Android app, you can learn to play your favorite songs from downloaded MIDI files, taking your music further. 3. Pick-up games: While organized sports leagues are an opportunity to make friends and get some exercise, you may not have the time to commit to weekly games or the inclination to spend money on team equipment and uniforms. Whether you call up your best pals to play in the backyard, or try your luck at the local court or field, all the benefits of team sports (e.g. fresh air and camaraderie) can be experienced participating in a casual pick-up game. 4. Wellness: To participate in online yoga classes, all you
need is a mat and comfy clothes. Online classes can deliver high-quality instruction for free on a schedule that works for you. The important thing is to find a teacher whose cues you understand and who practices a style that aligns with your needs and goals. Safety tip: if you are unsure how a certain pose or flow is performed, watch the video first before attempting it on your own. 5. Return-oninvestment crafting: Crafting can be expensive, particularly if you work with highquality materials. The good news is that once you master a particular skill, be it knitting, sewing or mosaics, there are opportunities to sell your work at craft fairs and on sites like Etsy. And of course, crafts can make amazing gifts for friends and family. While hobbies can enrich the mind, body and soul, they don’t need to cost a fortune. With a little creativity, you can learn new skills and try different activities without breaking the bank.

Drunk And Impaired Driving Involved In Nearly One Quarter Of All Holiday Traffic Deaths
The Next Chapter Poem Winter Storm! As I sit in my home with my warm soup, a storm is brewing and blowing towards you. The snow so blue and the trees, so bare. Not a soul dare steps a foot out there. I still sit inside with a hot chocolate by my side. Time had passed, then you come inside, poured on with snow, drenched to the bone! You just finished paving the road. Poem by Selene Olguin 12 years old
AUSTIN– A night of drinking at a friend's house for Richie Griffin in Austin led to the holidays spent in the court system after he crashed into a home when he got behind the wheel drunk. This is just one of many stories that highlight the costly and tragic consequences of driving under the influence. This holiday season, TxDOT wants to remind Texans to always find a sober ride. Throughout December, TxDOT’s Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign will host events across the state featuring video testimonials of Texans like Griffin who deal with the daily consequences of drunk driving, either as an
offender or survivor. These powerful stories and drunk driving facts can be found at SoberRides.org. “It is our hope that these moving, firsthand accounts will encourage all of us to make the right choice and not ever drive after drinking or doing anything that can alter our judgment,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. ”We don’t want to turn a happy time of year into one that could be marked by tragic loss caused by someone’s poor decision to drink and drive.” There were 2,462 DUI-alcohol related traffic crashes in Texas during the holiday season of December 1, 2020 through January
1, 2021. Those crashes killed 93 people and seriously injured another 215. Drinking and driving is 100% preventable and can have serious physical, emotional and financial consequences that can last for years. A DWI can hurt or kill someone, devastating the lives of victims and survivors forever. It can also cause significant and expensive legal issues, create difficulty finding or keeping a job and bring a lifetime of regret. There are many sober ride options available. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare service, stay put, call a friend or family member, or use mass
