A new restaurant is being opened in La Feria, and everyone has their ears perked. La Feria News stopped by last week, to see what the word on the street was! The owner’s name is Ruby Leal, a young lady who has always dreamt of opening her own restaurant! People
have been going by and asking what kind of food they’re going to have and when they’ll be opening. Leal explains that they will offer Tex-Mex food including Chicken Fajitas, Beef Fajitas, Burgers, other great food. Leal expressed that she wants a place for all the family to be able to enjoy. She says, “I want it to be a family environment, where everyone has
something, they can come and enjoy.” She says that she is also working on being able to offer drinks as well. Leal explained to us that when she saw the building she looked and thought, “I just really, really liked it”. She says she fell in love with it. Working in restaurants is all she knows, “It’s not just something I know, but it’s something
that I love.” she says. Leal previously helped manage Tejano Grill in Harlingen and says that she loves taking care of people and employees, making them feel at home. She mentioned that, “To me, my employees are everything, and my customers… it doesn’t matter how big or small, every job is important.” She explained that the restaurant is named after
her dog, Brady, whom she loved very much. He was one of her best friends and was very close to him. Ruby hopes to share some of that same love she got from her best friend to others when they come to her restaurant. Ruby is working to get all the last things together and hopes to open up Brady’s Grill early next month!
City Of La Feria Tree Lighting Ceremony Was A Great Success La Feria News On Tuesday, November 30th the city had their Annual Lighting of the tree. Mayor Olga Maldonado started off the evening with an opening speech and welcomed everyone to the event. It was good to see so many people in attendance especially because the pandemic had halted the annual event previously. This year the city unveiled a brand-new tree along with lots of new decorations that are put up around Main Street. If you drive down Main Street at night, you’ll see all the decorations around town beautifully lit. These type of celebrations gives us a sense of normalcy after all that
The only Community Bank with locations in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties
has happened since the pandemic started. On the night of the tree lighting carolers were singing and people were laughing and having fun. During the evening pan dulce and sodas were passed out also. And let's not forget about Santa Claus. He was in attendance taking Christmas wishes and photos with the children. In all the event was a great success. This Saturday December 11th will be the Annual Christmas Parade that will take place down main street and will end up at the High School parking lot. After the parade the annual Christmas festival will take place at the Lion’s Stadium parking lot.

Palm Valley Mayor George Rivera Announces His Candidacy For State Representative District 37 City of Harlingen, Texas – Palm Valley Mayor George Rivera announced his candidacy as a Republican for Texas State Representative in the new District 37 on Tuesday, November 23rd. The new House District includes all of Willacy County, most of Cameron County including Rancho Viejo, South Padre Island, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, and Harlingen. In his announcement, Mayor Rivera said, “I am not a professional politician. I am a businessman.” Rivera has a strong business background with a proven track record of problem-solving, and a reputation for getting the job done. After serving in the U. S. Air Force, Rivera earned a bachelor’s degree in business management before his long career in management with UPS Freight. As Mayor of Palm Valley, he has experience in addressing aging infrastructure by improving drainage, creating and building a $2M infrastructure fund,
balancing a city budget, and upgrading technology and equipment to insure a strong police force. Mayor Rivera announced his campaign focus “will be on what we as conservatives cherish most: our family values, our educational institutions, job creation, a strong police force, border security, defending our Constitution, and protecting the lives of the unborn, all of which are under attack.” Mayor Rivera is a conservative with a good common-sense approach. He said, “I believe what we need in Austin is a businessperson with a strong business acumen, a very good listener and a person who will work across the aisle and get good legislation passed for the people in district 37.” He finished his announcement by saying, “We have an opportunity to send a conservative to Austin from the Rio Grande Valley. I am committed to moving forward together and leaving a better future for the next generation.”

First Baptist Church, La Feria Of all the characters in the first Christmas story, the strangest are the magi. Most of what we know about them is fiction. They did not show up the night Jesus was born. And they were not 3 kings. What we do know is they were aliens from the East, probably modern Iraq. We know they did not read the Bible but read the stars. All of which means we would not invite them to speak at church on Sunday. But these amazing foreigners left their families and their gods, following nothing but a star. They came to worship one born to be king of a place larger than Iraq, Israel, or Texas. If that is not faith, I do not know what is. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Lions Basketball Is Off And Running By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News The La Feria Lions have officially kicked off the 2021 Basketball season and have a tough schedule as they continue action at the Hidalgo Pirate Classic. The Lions took on the Mercedes Tigers in the season opener in a very back and forth battle. Early from the get go the Lions and the Tigers battled it out in a classic chess match of a basketball game. At the end of the first quarter, the Lions were trailing 7 to 6 in what was a slow paced game on offense. Heading into the second quarter, the Lions regained control and the offense kicked back up for both teams continued to aggressively attack on both sides of the ball, with the game being tied at the half 22 to 22. As the game
progressed in the second half. The Tigers took an early lead but La Feria, who was playing consistently from the get go, turned it around to make it 45-44 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter had more dominant play making on both sides of the ball by the Tigers as they maintained control to outscore La Feria by 8 points to take the win 69 to 62. The First of many non-district opponents, La Feria had an early test against a great team in the Mercedes Tigers. Some teams in Non-District include, Rio Grande City, La Joya Palmview, and Edcouch-Elsa Looking ahead to the district calendar, The Lions will open up the 202122 District Campaign January 18th vs Hidalgo at Home.

Lionettes Basketball up to a very hot start in close matchups By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News The La Feria Lionettes basketball team is off to a very hot start and have kicked off the 2021-2022 campaign with an overall record of 2-1 as they make their way towards the District Calendar. The Lionettes kicked off the season against a tough McAllen Rowe team as quickly out of the gates, it became a back and forth battle with the score being
a one-two point difference. During the second quarter, The Lady Warriors took control but very quickly La Feria began to close out the gap held by Rowe. However, McAllen Rowe increased pressure on both sides of the ball and would eventually take the Victory 58 to 34. After this game, The Lionettes quickly had to prepare for their next opponents The Lionettes were then challenged once again by a very fierce Edinburg North Lady Cougar Squad, who
have been known to be very aggressive defensively and have a fast paced offensive tempo. Quickly on, the game started off to a quick shootout as at the end of the First Quarter the Score was 12-15 Lady Cougars up. The high octane offensive show continued up until the 4th quarter, where the Lionettes took control to win the game by a score of 50-40. Next up, during tournament play, the Lionettes faced off against Brownsville Hanna to take on an-
other great team in the form of the Lady Eagles. Similar to the Edinburg North matchup. This game quickly began fast paced as both teams battled for supremacy over the course of the game consistently. After a down to the wire matchup, the Lionettes came out victorious by a score of 36 to 31. The Lionettes continue to roll down their Non-District Schedule before they take on Rio Hondo December 12th to open up district.

Tips For The Holidays
The Next Chapter Poem
Beautiful Butterfly
A beautiful butterfly with shades of black and white; when you see it, it is such a sight! You see the bright pigment of colors, as its beautiful wings gently flutter. Slowly it lands on a tulip’s petal and peacefully rests, soon to settle. Poem by Selene Olguin 12 years old
It may be the season of cheer, but for many, the holidays are rife with anxiety about expenses. A recent survey shows that staying on budget is Americans’ top concern this holiday season, followed by incurring long-term debt, shipping costs, and being charged late or hidden fees. Here are five tips to protect your holiday budget: 1. Set a spending cap with friends and family. Americans plan to spend $998 on gifts this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation. ‘Tis the
season for giving, but make sure you don’t overspend. Know your budget upfront and communicate that with loved ones. Another idea to limit spending is to put everyone’s name into a hat. Each person draws one name and buys a gift for just the person they selected. You can add a bit of intrigue by keeping the identity of your recipient a secret until you open gifts! 2. Take advantage of deal days. Timing is everything for getting the best prices. Do your homework in advance to pay significantly less and wait for big
sales days, such as Super Saturday before Christmas, which is great for last-minute gifts. 3. Purchase gift cards with peace of mind. Gift cards are a popular, convenient gift, but some would-be buyers may hesitate to purchase them out of fear that the business may end up closing, especially those still struggling during the ongoing pandemic. Erie Insurance is taking away that concern with gift card reimbursement coverage, which is provided to certain eligible homeowners at no additional charge. The coverage provides reimbursement for up to $250 per gift card at local businesses within 100 miles of a customer’s home if the business permanently closes within a year after purchase. Reimbursement coverage is limited to $500 per policy period. 4. Track when products are discounted

The Art of Manliness Monthly Segment
How to Use Body Language to Create a Dynamite First Impression Brett and Kate McKay Art of Manliness
There are two components to creating a positive first impression: what you say (conversation) and how you act (body language). Both components are important (you can read more about the art of conversation here), but the latter is actually much more influential. Nonverbal cues have 4X the impact on your impression than your words do. Thus, how you stand, sit, gesture, and generally hold yourself can either significantly enhance or detract from the overall first impression you make on others. In order to make your body language a first impression booster, you want it to communicate 3 main things: openness, confidence, and interest. Body Language That Communicates Openness Have you ever needed to ask someone to take a picture for you, or looked around the room at a party trying to decide who to talk to? How did you pick? You may not have realized it, but you likely chose someone who looked “open” rather than “closed.” There was something about their facial expression, gaze, posture, and the way they talked and interacted with others that seemed warm, safe, and approachable rather than threatening, hostile, aloof, and/or selfcontained. How do you achieve such a welcoming aura yourself, so that people want to make contact in the first place, and can feel a sense of connection with you once they do? It’s primarily about opening up what body language expert Patti Wood calls your “body windows.” Body windows are parts of the body that influence
others to see you as more open or closed, all depending on how you orient them. These are places that feel intimate and/or are vulnerable to physical attack. When you “expose” them to others, therefore, the more primal part of people’s brains reads you as more accessible and approachable. Wood compares someone who keeps these body parts “closed” to a house with boarded up windows — the effect is bleak, creepy, confined, and off-putting; you certainly don’t want to go in. A house with open windows, in contrast, feels fresh, welcoming, and inviting. Let’s take a look at each “window” and how you can either close or open it: Heart. The heart is the metaphorical seat of feelings like love and warmth, as well as values like honesty. It’s not surprising then that having a frank, emotionally intense conversation is known as having a “heart to heart.” People will feel more connected to you, and open up more, if you face them straight on — literally heart to heart. You come off as more trustworthy when you’re dealing with them “straight.” Even a quarter turn away from someone can make the interaction feel less intimate. Eyes. Eyes are famously said to be the windows to the soul. So don’t always have their shades drawn by staring at your feet, or at your phone. Don’t wear sunglasses unless you really need them. And try not to blink excessively. Look around with an open gaze, and don’t be afraid to make warm, friendly eye contact with other people. Eye contact very often serves as an invitation for someone to approach. Throat. Baring the
throat makes one vulnerable to attack. When you’re wearing a button-up shirt and tie, which doubly covers your neck, you convey a closed-off, protected authority, which can be helpful in the competitive world of business. But in a social setting, an open neck reads as warm and welcoming. So in your off hours, remove your tie, and unbutton your shirt a little. Or wear a v-neck tee, which not only reveals your neck, but offers a little more access to your heart as well. Not too deep mind you; a few inches from your collarbone will do. This is perhaps why turtlenecks don’t make a great impression. Well, also, because, turtlenecks. Mouth. A frown registers instantly in the primal parts of the brain as a potential threat. A smile signifies an invitation. It bespeaks friendliness, warmth, and openness. And when you smile at someone, they feel as though you find them appealing. Stomach. One of the most common things to do with your arms is to cross them across your stomach. But this stance reads as defensive and puts a barrier between you and others that makes you seem more distant and aloof. Research actually bears this perception out; when a group of participants were asked to listen to a lecture while keeping their arms crossed, they felt more negatively towards the speaker and reported higher levels of stress than the control group. So to not only feel less stressed yourself, but to also convey more openness to others, sit and stand with arms by your sides rather than crossed over your stomach, even if it feels a little awkward. Hands. Specifically
your palms. For whatever reason, it’s hard to lie while showing your palms. Dishonest people will ball them into fists, hide them in pockets, tuck them under the table, or secrete them behind their back. Conversely, showing open palms to others conveys honesty, trustworthiness, and openness. So leave your hands at your sides and to the front, and make plenty of gestures with an open palm. Feet. Wood calls the feet “the most honest windows” of the body. Though we can often consciously control other parts of our body, especially our upper half, she explains, our true feelings tend to “‘leak out’ through the feet.” One of these “tells” is what she calls the “foot lock,” where “one foot wraps around the leg, usually at the lower calf.” This bit of body language, Wood says, “is like having a ‘closed’ sign hanging on the door.” In addition to opening up each of your “body windows,” you should also be mindful of clearing away any objects between you and another person. So don’t hold a beverage up to your chest while you’re standing at a party, and when you’re sitting face-to-face with someone at a restaurant or coffee shop, don’t put your drink, laptop, backpack, phone, etc. on the table between you. In fact, don’t put your phone on the table at all. Research shows that its mere presence — even if you’re not looking at it — leads people to keep their conversation more superficial; they subconsciously feel they may be interrupted at any time, and so refrain from going deeper. All in all, you want your body windows open, and the channel for connection clear...
Top 5 Gift Ideas for the Person Who Has Everything
statepoint We all have someone who has more than enough clothes, jewelry, artwork and overall “stuff,” that you just don’t know where to begin finding a gift they’ll need or want. The next time you need to come up with a clever birthday gift idea for them, try one of the following categories: 1. Something they’ll use. Nowadays, there’s a good chance there’s a subscription box filled with items your recipient needs or will always use, from clothes, snacks and razors, to tools, toys and pet supplies. For example, if your friend picks up wine every time they grocery shop, a subscription to a monthly wine club won’t go to waste. In fact, it will probably be an appreciated gift! Many boxes offer flexibility for the red, white, or rosé-all-day person’s preferences and include additions each month. 2. Something personalized. If you’re in search of a creative gift, consider giving a custom gift. This might sound like a pricey approach, but customization can be as simple as sending a fun, personalized ecard. With SmashUps from American Greetings, you can start by selecting a fully customizable video featuring some favorite famous faces, including Dolly Parton, Shaq, and Alicia Keys. Next, you can personalize the video with a name and other custom elements, so the celebrity is singing directly to your loved one. Finally, you can instantly share the video with the guy or gal by text or email, or you can let other friends join in on the fun by sharing it on social media too. And because SmashUps is a one-time fee, you can shower relatives or friends with personalized messages that will make them smile all year round. Custom gifts show true thoughtfulness and can make someone feel extra
special for the holidays. Smashups are a fun and lighthearted way to virtually express your care and love toward a friend, family member, or coworker. 3. Something they’ve always wanted. Difficult to shop for people who often have birthday gift ideas for themselves or items they’ve always wanted that they’ll never buy or request. Maybe it’s a high-ticket item or maybe it’s something simple that other purchases just get prioritized over. If you know of such an item, consider giving it as a gift! Your friend will feel good receiving a gift from someone who was listening and understanding them. 4. Something they didn’t know they needed. Sometimes, you can’t put your finger on a practical item that you know the person will use and have to use your best judgment. Though it could be as simple as a mug or digital picture frame, these are often the best gifts of all, because the people receiving them likely never thought of them either. 5. Something that requires thought. If the person you’re shopping for has a lot of “stuff,” stop thinking of additional items to give them. Shift your focus and gift them your time or attention. If it’s a significant other, plan a special date night on the town or in the house. If it’s a parent or grandparent, consider what experiences or events they might appreciate; maybe it's going to a play, watching a movie, or taking a trip as a family. Not all gifts have to cost a lot; in fact, some of the best gifts are ones that create memories. When it comes to gifts for those who have everything, don’t fret. With a bit of creativity, you can make their day special. For more clever birthday gift ideas and ways to celebrate, visit: www. americangreetings.com/ smashups
