Texans could carry handguns without a permit under bill headed to Gov. Greg Abbott's desk BY SAMI SPARBER Texas Tribune A measure long sought by conservative activists allowing Texans to carry handguns without a license is on the cusp of becoming law after the Texas Senate approved a compromise on the bill Monday, sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott has said he would sign the permitless carry proposal into law. "We should have 'constitutional carry' in Texas," Abbott told North Texas radio host Rick Roberts in April. Just before midnight Sunday, the House approved the deal, hashed out behind closed doors, in an 82-62 vote. The Senate approved

the deal Monday in a 17-13 vote. “This is a simple restoration of Texans’ constitutional right under the Second Amendment, a right of the people to keep and bear arms,” the Senate sponsor, Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, said on the floor Monday. “I think it is a bill that is the strongest bill I’ve seen in my legislative career regarding the rights of our Second Amendment.” House Bill 1927 would nix the requirement for Texas residents to obtain a license to carry handguns if they’re not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a gun. Lionettes nab 2021 all-district honors By KEVIN NARRO

LA FERIA-The Lionettes wrapped up their 2021 season with a bi-district loss to state champion hopeful,

took home designated player of the year. Galan swatted 11 hits and scored 26 runs while driving in 15 runs. Pitcher Anna Torres, catcher Miah Bocanegra, shortstop Hayaris Jimenez and outfielder Victoria Alejandre received first team all district. Second baseman Samantha Garcia and outfielder Karla Trevino took home second team honors. Railee Carvjal, Elyssa Villarreal, Angelina Lopez, Nicole Bocanegra and Amber Frausto all received honorable mention. The 2021 season was challenging for all teams. Congratulations, ladies, on a great season and making the playoffs. Keep up the good work.

The Running Pandemic The reason for me writing this is to inform you of the great running tradition by past, present and I’m sure, future athletes of LFISD. I might not mention everyone but don’t feel left out; Pat yourself on your back and feel that you had something to do with LF stigma, a running community, school, it’s just in you. I can go to any school (and I did). They all have their stigma; Brownsville- soccer, Harlingen-football & BB, Edcouch-Elsa YJ- football and so on. But La Feria it’s cross country/track. People like the Flores, Rubio, Tamez, Dr. Sanchez and coaches like Coach V-summer track, Coach Parvin & George at Sanchez Elementary where it all starts. Coach Martinez and all High school track coaches for both boys and girls. Look at what happened recently, three boys and a freshman girl went and medaled at state in Austin. I went to lots of track meets, coaches and athletes from other schools would ask “Is La Feria coming?’ because they knew they had their work cut out for them because LF was and did win. Look at that Reyes kid that ran last year at state. Didn’t they just win district and competed at state. My name is Coach Gutierrez. I’m not from here, but I’ve lived here in La Feria for 25 years. I wrote this short article to give credit, promote, inspire the old, the new and the future winning Lions of LFISD. I could add more but I don’t want to bore you. I kept it short and to the point. Here running is a pandemic. Everyone has it, so they just run to get rid of it. P.S. -There used to be a 5k run the Adrian Dominguez Scholarship Run. Still active? We need to keep it going. Vaccine Clinics to be held in Mid-Valley

A Belgian farmer made the news when he inadvertently moved the boundary between Belgium and France, shrinking the French landscape by about 1/4 of a football field. The innocent mistake was corrected, and everyone was able to laugh about the land grab. However, there was a time when France’s land was in real jeopardy and no one was laughing. Saturday will be the 77th anniversary of D-Day, the allied invasion of the French beaches of Normandy. 160,000 troops stormed beaches like Omaha. 9,000 were killed or wounded. We would do well to remember them this Saturday, as on Memorial Day we remembered all who had died in service. We remember those who gave their lives. Nor do we forget the despots and autocrats who took those lives. We remember not out of vengeance or a grudge, but because, “Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it.” Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, they will be called children of God.”

But Bethany’s bed was as empty as Toby’s. Her eyes stung with tears as she tried to control her lungs and heart and think rationally. They must be hiding! Toby and Bethany loved to play Hide and Seek and sometimes they thought it was funny to play tricks on their mother. At their young ages, they had no idea that losing them was her worst nightmare. All right. They wanted to play this game, she would hunt for them. Anna slowly and carefully got on her knees and looked under Bethany’s bed. It sat close to the floor and she really didn’t think they could both fit under there, but the movement was more for show in case they were

watching. Closing her eyes and holding her breath, she lowered her cheek to the floor. Slowly rolling her eyelids up, she saw no little faces smiling back at her. She carefully rose to her knees, then to a standing position and walked to the closet with her hand on her heart. The rod had been lowered closer to the floor so five-year-old Bethany could dress herself. All the pretty little outfits hanging there would make plenty of hiding spaces for two small children to duck into. Anna moved every single hanger from one side of the closet to the other. “Nope, no kids there.” she used a sing song voice as she slid the closet door closed. “I better check

in Toby’s room,” she announced to the walls. She almost thought she heard giggling as she turned out the light. She snapped the switch back on, but no one appeared. Going back down the hall Anna felt a slight tremor of panic in the middle of her chest, but she fought it down reminding herself that they were simply playing a game. They were probably huddled somewhere watching her with their hands over their mouths to muffle the laughter. She would have to get really stern with them for scaring her so bad. In Toby’s room she lowered herself back to the ground and lifted the edge of his brown comforter. His bed sat up a little higher than Bethany’s and could easily accommodate two small children in the space. Still, Anna felt no surprise when she didn’t find Toby or Bethany there. That would be too easy for her kids. After all, they were very smart and knew some really good hiding spots. Once again she raised herself up and stood still with her hands on her head trying to swallow the panic that threatened to overtake her. Maybe they were in Toby’s closet. She slid the door

back but saw nothing except clothes, shoes and toys. “Okay, kids. Time to come out. You have to eat breakfast and get ready for school. Come on now. Enough of this game. It’s not fun anymore.” No answer came to her. The house remained quiet. A couple of tears leaked out of her eyes and she bit her lip as she ran to the bathroom to look in the dirty clothes hamper. The last time they had hidden there, they had been a little smaller and both fit comfortably in the tight space. “Maybe Bethany hid there by herself.” Anna didn’t realize she spoke out loud. She flicked the light on and yanked the hamper door open. A hill of dirty clothes fell out spreading the smell of sweat, dirt and mildew through the small room, but no child fell out with the clothes. Anna gulped a deep breath of air to keep the light shower of tears from whipping into a storm. Once again she thought she heard a slight giggle from somewhere in the house. So help her, when she found those two, their backsides would smart. She was their mother and enough was enough.
