The La Feria Veterans Memorial Monument Project committee would like to thank everyone who came out on Memorial Day to recognize those who have lost their lives for our freedom. The event turned out to be a great success. We were able to recognize some MIA & KIA soldiers who lost their lives in service. They were KIA-Pancho Maples, MIA-MUR Harvey Storms, MIA- SGT Tommy dela Pena and KIA—PFC Ralph Garcia. We’d also love to recognize all the Board Members for all their hard work and dedication to this project. Thank you to the City of La Feria Mayor Olga

Maldonado for her participation and her husband for his support. A huge thank you to the La Feria Fire Department for the Flag Ceremony led by David Phinney and to the La Feria Police Department for their continued

support. Thanks to Judge Arturo Salas and Angelica Baldivia for their prayers in recognition of all those that gave their lives for our country. Thank you, Mr. Benitez, for providing your band players like Victor Velasquez

for the national anthem and Santos Hernandez & Joey

Frausto for playing TAPS, they did a fantastic job.

2021 Graduation Ceremony 2 • June 9, 2021• LA FERIA NEWS

On Friday, May 28th graduation was held at Lion’s Stadium, with restrictions of course. Since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, many seniors were distant learning and did so through the end of the year. And even though some did attend in-person classes, it wasn’t the same as it is fully operational. Social distancing was still happening, masks had to be worn and certain activities and school dances were canceled. The graduating class of 2021 didn’t get to experience most of the traditions that seniors go through throughout the school year. Some distant learning seniors didn’t even get to see their friends and have the full experience of being an upper-class student. Even though statewide some restrictions were

lifted, at graduation you still had to wear masks, both students and visitors. There were only 6 tickets allowed per student for graduation and social distancing in the stands was also part of the rules. Before seniors were released all the people from the stands had to clear out and had to go and wait in their vehicles for their senior. At the end of the graduation ceremony, it was a long-lasting moment for the graduates. The school song was sung and then the class song was played as seniors gathered on the 50yard line to say one last goodbye. There were some tears, hugging, and dancing as their class song played. This is one year the La Feria High School graduating class of 2021 will remember.

Graduation Ceremony took place the evening of Friday, May 28th, 2021. Social distancing was observed by Students, Staff, and Guests. More news and exclusive content at

Our church has prayer teams which can be mobilized by text message to pray for urgent needs. For two days we had prayed for a man who was deathly ill. Finally, there was a breakthrough. His recovery was miraculous. His wife told me that he was being dismissed from the hospital. As usual, I was multitasking, and in a hurry. To get the good news out, I simply sent the message, “He is on his way home.” Some thought I meant he was bound for heaven, rather than his La Feria home. It took a few phone calls, but I comforted the grieving and clarified our friend’s destination. The Apostle Paul wrote about death. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” An old Gospel song says it like this. “This world is not my home; I am just passing through.” If we live long enough and well enough, we become homesick for a place we have never been. And we start to call it home.

Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco has been re-certified as a Level II Neonatal Nursery by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The re-certification is a demonstration of award-winning care provided by neonatologists, neonatal nurses, and other staff members at Knapp Medical Center. This team is led by Dr. Ramiro Caballero, Neonatal Medical Director; Olivia Estrada RN, BSN, Director of Women’s Services; and Selina Hernandez, RN, BSN, Neonatal Program Manager. Anna Hinojosa, RN, MSN, Chief Nursing Officer for Knapp, said the re-certification -as well as several awards for maternity care from Health Grades -- highlight the excellent care that is being provided to newborn babies and their mothers at the Knapp Women’s Center. “Knapp Medical Center’s clinical team works consistently to pursue the highest standards for clinical excellence, and we are extremely proud of this achievement,” Ms. Hinojosa added. “We at Knapp Medical Center remain committed to the pursuit of patientcentered excellence in all that we do.”

The Next Chapter Hide and Seek By Nandy Ekle Part 3 Once again she thought she heard a slight giggle from somewhere in the house. So help her, when she found those two, their backsides would smart. She was their mother and enough was enough. “Bethany! Toby! Come out here right now!” Standing in the hall, she thought of all the other places she had known them to hide. When a new “secret place” sprang to her mind, she stomped through the house with increasing speed to that spot. Every cabinet had been searched, every closet opened and gone through. She ran to the laundry room and opened the dryer, horrified that the idea of hiding inside the drum might come to

them. She felt a small wave of relief and took a deep breath of air, patting her chest with her hand when she didn’t find them. She went into the living room and moved the sofa away from the wall. A few Lincoln Logs and broken crayons hid there, but no children. In the kitchen next to the pantry was the garage door. She didn’t think they would go out there, but she could be wrong. If you tell a kid not to do something, that’s immediately what they want to do. And she and Doug had been very explicit and precise about telling them to stay out of the garage without her or their father with them. As she put her hand on the doorknob, once more she thought she heard the tiny little giggle sound that

Toby made when he tried not to laugh. She turned her head to catch him, but only the air greeted her. Pulling the garage door open, she walked out. Doug, an amateur mechanic, had filled the garage with machines and tools for his tinkering enjoyment. Thus the reason Doug and Anna didn’t want the kids piddling around in the garage without a parent. Doug had draped sheets over some of the hulking motors and more dangerous paraphernalia, and the effect was a little spooky. But it also created a world of hiding places. Anna’s tears threatened to unleash as a picture flashed through her mind of a baby girl on the ground with a monstrous motor block on top of her, followed by the picture of a young boy with a hammer stuck in his head. She resolved that as soon as Doug came in from his trip, she would demand he get rid of the bulk of the mess. As she walked around, she lifted covers and halfheartedly poked at masses, calling out the children’s names from time to time with a shaky and slobbery voice, but no answer came. The thick air smelled of oil and rusty metal and she decided in a hurry that they simply were not there. Heading back to the

kitchen door, she thought of where else they might have gone. There really weren’t many places left. She wondered if they had been following her. Maybe that’s why she kept hearing their little giggles. She went to the sofa in the living room to sit and wait for them to come out of hiding. Anna looked around the room from her spot on the couch. She didn’t hold to keeping a lot of pictures and fluffy flowers and things on the walls. The television sat against the wall furthest from the entry way, which was partitioned off by a shoulder-high book shelf with an empty planter box inserted in the top. In the bookshelf Anna kept a set of encyclopedias and children’s books. In school, Toby was learning to do research on the internet, but here at home both kids still liked to take the books off the shelf and look at them and ask questions about the pictures. Behind the couch was a wedding picture of her and Doug, school pictures of Toby and of Bethany and an old calendar that she kept up there because the picture on the calendar was of the whole family. She twisted around and looked at the photos sending a psychic message to the kids telling them that they

June 9, 2021 • LA FERIA NEWS • 7 needed to get ready for school. After fifteen minutes and still no children, the panic button in her heart refused to be turned off and her tears ran like a burst water pipe. “Come on, kids! Get out here now! You are in so much trouble!” She still got no answer. Her eyes wandered to the phone stand so that she could call the police, but the handset was gone. Her hands jumped up and covered her eyes to catch the tears. “Oh, Dear Lord in Heaven! They did something with the phone before they

went to bed! I can’t even think about where to start looking for that!” She knew the phone stand had a button to make it ring so it could be found, but she never could remember how to do it. Horror rose up in her chest from her throat and brought a new load of tears with it. Her babies were gone! They were no where in the house! Her screaming began as she ran through the front door to look in the bushes. When she didn’t find them there, she ran almost to the street calling their names in a state of hysteria.

Helping Small Businesses Thrive in Today’s Digital World (StatePoint) Small businesses were hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with nearly 10 million American small businesses closing their doors at least temporarily over the past 15 months. Despite an uncertain economy, small business owners were resilient, creative and agile, shifting their business models to take advantage of e-commerce, many for the first time. Before COVID-19, more than one in three small businesses had never reported a digital sale. Today, nearly seven out of eight small businesses are selling goods and services online. For the millions of resilient small businesses still operating, the mass move to online and mobile shopping ushers in a new era of opportunity. At the same time, additional resources will be needed to support them. “For over a year, small businesses have faced one unimaginable challenge after another,” says Mike Katz, executive vice president, T-Mobile for Business. “At a time when mobile connectivity and internet access are required to advertise services, sell products and interact with customers, no small business should be without these necessary resources.” To help fuel the resurgence of small business, T-Mobile is offering the following solutions and benefits,

available today: • New smartphone plans. Staying viable in a mobile-first world requires affordable connectivity. To that end, T-Mobile is offering new smartphone plans purpose-built for business. Every plan includes unlimited talk, text, and data over America’s largest, fastest, and most reliable 5G network, and high-speed mobile hotspot data to power whole teams on-thego. • High-speed internet. As bad as broadband access can be for consumers who must deal with high-prices and sparse competition, it’s often actually worse for small businesses. Many business plans from traditional ISPs deliver the same service levels as residential plans, but for often twice the price. Small Business Internet from T-Mobile delivers fast, reliable connectivity without annual contracts or costly surprises, along with tech support from dedicated experts. • Digital outreach. Today, two-thirds of Facebook users visit a local business page at least once weekly. In a world that packed a decade of digital transformation into the last year, it often takes digital savvy and the ability to reach customers online to succeed. Through a new program, Facebook Advertising on Us, small businesses can receive up to three one-on-one consultations with a

Facebook Marketing Expert, along with educational resources. Plus, every small business on T-Mobile with three or more lines can get $200 in digital advertising to market their company on Facebook and Instagram. “By pairing fast, reliable internet with digital tools, training and marketing support, we can help small businesses connect with their communities,” says Mark D’Arcy, Facebook vice president of Global Business Marketing. For additional resources, visit t-mobile.com/ opportunity. To access a growing library of new original content on entrepreneurship, visit t-mobile.com/ business/magentaedge. Finally, beginning June 1, 2021 through July 9, 2021, small businesses nationwide are invited to visit t-mobile. com/opportunitysweepstakes to enter for a chance be one of six small businesses to win a 5G smartphone or tablet; or one of five to win a package of five 5G devices; or one of two to win a full 5G makeover with five 5G smartphones, a 5G tablet and $5000 to spend on anything. Small businesses are critical to the prosperity of local communities and the economy atlarge. Thanks to new resources, they’ll be equipped to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in today’s digital world.

(StatePoint) If you are like many consumers, it’s important to you that you are stocking your pantry and refrigerator with foods, beverages and wellness products your family will love. However, being a careful shopper is particularly tricky these days, as you are likely getting in and out of the supermarket in a hurry or even staying home and ordering items online. Whether shopping instore or online, buying items that other consumers have already tested can save you time and money. For an inside look at what other shoppers love, check out resources like Product of the Year USA, the largest consumer-voted award for product innovation. All winning products are determined by a national study of 40,000 consumers conducted by Kantar, a global leader in consumer research. “Being a savvy shopper doesn’t require hours of research. It can be as simple as scanning shelves or online product listings for Product of the Year’s red seal of approval,”

says Mike Nolan, Global CEO of Product of the Year Management. “The red seal can give you confidence in your purchase, because it means that the product is backed by the votes of over 40,000 shoppers.” Simplify grocery shopping by checking out the 19 Product of the Year food and beverage winners of 2021, listed by category:
