It’s that time of year again! School is just right around the corner for most School districts in the valley. Santa Rosa ISD starts school on August 16th and La Feria and Santa Maria school districts start their classes on August 23rd. As for La Feria ISD the district will
return to 100% in-person learning on August 23. Due to restrictions being placed on school districts by Governor Abbots Executive order GA-36, which went into effect this May, the district will not be requiring mask wearing but will recommend it. This order prevents school districts from enacting mask mandates. Due to no mask mandate, many
parents are concerned and have pushed for a virtual learning option, but state lawmakers failed to pass the Funding Bill for the upcoming year. The bill would have provided funding for schools that planned to offer remote learning options for the next school year. The district will continue to follow CDC guidelines as well
this upcoming school year. More pictures and full post can be found

Third Annual Backpack Giveaway On Friday, July 30, Cameron County Precinct 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz teamed up with Driscoll Health Plans and BCHS Health and Human Services and various community donors to host the 3rd Annual Backpack Giveaway. 750 backpacks with supplies were given in less than 2 hours. With the help of community volunteers, the team distributed these backpacks in an organized manner and made sure the children of Cameron County have a supportive start to the upcoming school year. Our hope is to continue this tradition and keep supporting the students of Cameron County. We wish all of the students a safe and exciting return

schools safe according to the CDC wouldbe screen testing, ventilation, handwashing and respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick and getting tested, contact tracing in combination with quarantine and isolation, and cleaning and disinfection. COVID-19 prevention strategies remain critical to protect people, including students, teachers, and staff, who are not fully vaccinated, especially in areas of moderate-to high community transmission levels. If a positive case is reported to the district, it will then be reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services and parents within the district. Continuation of service plan for the 2021-2022 school year on the district website laferiaisd.org.

as federal and state mandates. All students and staff will be trained in safety protocols and guidelines. Students in PK3-6th will be temperature screened prior to entering the schools. Cleaning and sanitation efforts throughout campuses and on busses will continue and teachers are encouraged to promote social distancing when possible. The CDC recommends schools to maintain at least 3 ft of physical distance between students within classrooms, combined with indoor mask wearing by people who are not fully vaccinated, to reduce transmission risk. If it’s not possible to maintain these distances, it is important to layer other prevention strategies, such as indoor masking. Other important layers of prevention to keep

TSTC alumnus applies Biomedical Equipment Technology skills to successful career
Armando Galvan Jr., who graduated from the Biomedical Equipment Technology program at TSTC in 2015, now works at Fresenius Kidney Care. (Photo courtesy of TSTC.)
Texas State Technical College (HARLINGEN, Texas) - Armando Galvan Jr., a biomedical technician II at Fresenius Kidney Care, credits his degree from Texas State Technical College to his current success
in his position. “The biomedical program at TSTC really helped me gain the skills and knowledge that I needed to choose a great career path,” he said. Galvan graduated from TSTC in December 2015 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in
Biomedical Equipment Technology. He says he continues to apply what he learned at TSTC to the work he does today. How long have you worked for Fresenius, and what do you do there? I have worked at Fresenius Kidney Care for five years. I am responsible for the efficient use of resources related to repair and maintenance costs, including the routine repair and maintenance for various medical equipment. I also maintain water systems and the physical plant in assigned facilities to support patient safety and ensure that equipment is being operated in accordance with company policies and procedures, manufacturer’s documentation, industry standards and local, state and federal regulatory requirements. What does a typical day on the job look like for you? In the role of a biomed, there is no such thing as a “typical day,” as every day is different -- starting with new equipment installation to machine breakdowns, (and) attending meetings with the clinic’s internal teams to prepare for weekly changes. What do you find most fulfilling about your job? The new technologies
in dialysis, which is a treatment that mimics the work of failed kidneys, to help streamline the daily processes to provide a better service for patients. It’s nice to know that what I do improves the lives of our patients. How are you able to apply what you learned at TSTC to the responsibilities you have at Fresenius? I’m able to apply a lot of what I learned at TSTC to my current role at Fresenius -- from maintenance and repair to supply orders and inventory accountability. Would you recommend this path of study for other people? Yes. I believe that the degree should be a requirement in order to have a career as a biomed. The skills learned are essential to perform my job to the best of my ability. In Texas, medical equipment repairers can earn an average annual salary of $49,050, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The future of this allied health career is bright, with 12% projected growth in the state, onetonline.org shows. Enrollment for the fall semester at TSTC is underway. Prep Your Home, Dorm and Classroom for a New School Year focused all morning. In the Classroom
StatePoint Many students spent the last school year learning virtually, and now, there are a lot of items on parents’ and teachers’ to-do lists to help get ready for a return to traditional learning this school year. Below are tips to help simplify the transition – at home, in the classroom and in a dorm room. At Home Take Time to Declutter. With most students returning to in-person learning, it’s easy to forget about the workspace at home. Create an area for homework and studying that’s free of distractions by throw-
ing out unnecessary items, filing away papers in folders and buying new supplies like pens, highlighters and paper. Add Duck Brand Select Grip EasyLiner to desk drawers and shelves to keep items in place and protect the surface from scratches and dents. Meal Prep for Simple Mornings. Early morning routines and busy commutes will become the norm again. Keep them stress-free by stocking up on a variety of breakfast and lunch options so you can prepare and pack delicious meals and nutritious snacks for the week. By having meals planned and proper ingredients on-hand, kids can get to the bus on time and stay

Welcome Students Back. Teachers can create a fun and welcoming environment by decorating the classroom with colorful bulletin boards and personalized nametags. EasyLiner Adhesive Laminate is a budget-friendly way to add extra protection and ensure they last all year long. Help Keep Students and Teachers Healthy. The health and safety of students and teachers should continue to be prioritized. Take proper hygiene measures by encouraging kids to wash
their hands, cover their coughs and catch their sneezes. Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in lunch boxes and backpacks for convenient sanitizing. In a Dorm Room Create a Home Away from Home. Moving away from home and adjusting to living alone can be challenging for college students, but the transition can be made a bit easier by making their dorm feel like home. Personalize the space by hanging family photos, canvases with fun colors and patterns or string lights. If you’re worried about paint chips on the
I overheard someone say, “Today is hot as Hell.” The comment reminded me of one of the billboards that were popular in the late 90s. “If You Think It’s Hot Here” … God. Is Hell a real place? Is it hot? There are those who doubt the reality of Hell. They ask, “How can a person be punished for eternity for temporal sins?” Oscar Wilde claimed that hell is here. Churchill advised, “If you're going through hell, keep going.” William Shakespeare wrote, “Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.” But the Bible refers to Hell as a place. Gehenna, Hades, Sheol, Tartarus are some of the words that are translated as Hell. Yet, hot is only one of the ways that hell is described in the scriptures. Yes, it is called a lake of fire. But outer darkness, a place of torment, weeping and gnashing of teeth, and eternal punishment are also ways that Hell is described. If for nothing else, Hell exists as an option for those who would want no part of eternity with God. Hell is at least the absence of God. And that truly would be hell for most of us.

The Next Chapter Pet Ghost
By Nandy Ekle Part 6
He crawled on his hands and knees around the edge of the bed looking closely at the carpet, and occasionally he raised the bed skirt and peered. I thought he looked silly as he slowly moved from one side of the bed to the other on the floor. He stopped at the head of the bed, stood up and faced the little bathroom. “It’s coming from there.” Do ghosts use the toilet? That’s all that room contained: a toilet, a shower, and a sink. He walked to the door jamb and stopped. At that
moment Leslie touched me on the shoulder. “We have to cut to a commercial. Dr. Simon, can we hold until we get back from the break?” He stopped exactly where he stood. “Sure.” Leslie informed the viewers that we would return in a moment. The cameraman and light man pushed their way to the bathroom door. “Dora,” Dr. Simon started. “There is definitely something here.” My hand curled into a fist and I bit my own knuckles with anxiety. Chuckling nervously, I tried to sound like I was discounting his opinion.
“I think the presence coming from this little room is angrier than the other presence. You could be in some danger.” “Well, it’s a bathroom—not always a pleasant room.” I hoped my humor would diffuse an uncomfortable situation. “Okay, kids, we’re going back on.” Leslie sounded cutesy. Emily nodded her head at the cameraman and Leslie reminded the world that Dr. Simon was about to walk into the bathroom where a malevolent spirit seemed to be hiding. I pushed my way past the camera guy and light guy, determined to laugh when nothing happened. He walked all the way in, placed his hand on the shower curtain and paused. He looked at Leslie. Leslie looked at Emily who had her hand at the Bluetooth apparatus in her ear and her eyes looked far away. When she nodded at Leslie, Leslie nodded to Barry who yanked the shower curtain back and saw exactly what I thought he’d see—absolutely
nothing. He turned his face to me again and I just almost knew I saw something pass across his pupils. Was he teasing me? “I might like to come back and set up some equipment in here.” He looked at me, all nice and normal again. “I just want you to be safe.” “Believe me, this bedroom and tiny bath have always been the safest place in the house.” Leslie addressed the camera. “Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we’re going to take another break while we set up for our séance.” She grinned like the Cheshire Cat, waved, and the heat light went off. We all turned and headed back to the front of the house. “I brought séance equipment,” she said as we entered the living room. The camera guy and the light guy put their equipment on the floor and went out to the truck. I slipped into the kitchen to recompose myself. I had never been part of a séance before and felt excited. But I couldn’t
shake the horrible cold that had settled deep in
Contrasts The stillness of a mountaintop Above a quiet plain; The hustling ‘round an anthill After a cooling spring rain. The stars sprinkling above In clear summer skies; The wink of lightning bugs As they go flying by. The makeup of an atom And the solar system more. Such ever repeating patterns We encounter every day Show intelligence in creation And help us know our way. The worlds within and the worlds without Should reveal it to our minds and remove any doubt. Poem By James Arnold

program at Texas Southmost College, and he knew immediately this was the career path he was going to choose. “I’ve always wanted a career in the medical field, and this was just the right program,” said Zepeda. “I was fortunate enough to find this program so close to home and now I’m a 21-year-old with a college degree. I thank the Lord above and my family for their guidance and support.” The San Benito native graduated in May with an associate degree in Respiratory Care Science and since then has become a registered respiratory therapist and will begin his career at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen later this month. “I got everything I needed from this program to start a career I love,” said Zepeda. “It helped me become who I
am today.” From its structure and instructors to hands-on training, Zepeda said he had the chance to learn the ins and outs of the respiratory profession and understand the procedures and processes of the career. “This program was rigorous and challenging, especially completing it during COVID, but I took it one day at a time,” he said. “To have found what I want to do for the rest of my life at a young age is a blessing.” Zepeda added that the training he received is now like muscle memory and he is confident and more than prepared to fulfill his duty as a respiratory therapist. “I’m only about to start my career, but I can tell It’s going to be very rewarding,” said Zepeda. “Everything we do positively impacts our patients and their families. As a
respiratory therapist it’s amazing to see the improvements your work can make for someone who needs help and how we can make a difference in a life.” He added that he hopes to continue making a difference as his career progresses, so he ultimately wants to pursue a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in the field or as a physician assistant. “I got my start at TSC and I’m a proud alumnus. It has given me the motivation to keep going and aim high,” he said. “It is my second home, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a college, a career or to improve their skills. Your life can change at TSC and for the better.” For more information about TSC’s Respiratory Care Science program, or to register, visit tsc.edu. Fall 2021 classes begin August 23.
