La Feria Native Joseph de la Garza made his dream come true when he recently completed the Great American RailTrail on August 15, 2021. According to the Great American Rail-Trail website railstotrails.org it is the nation’s first crosscountry multiuse trail, stretching more than 3,700 miles between Washington, D.C., and Washington State. This trail is an iconic piece of American infrastructure that will connect thousands of miles of rail-trails and other multiuse trails,

serving tens of millions of people living along the route as well as those who visit the trail from around the country and the world. Joseph grew up and went to school in La Feria and is a 1983 graduate. Mr. de la Garza stated that the bicycle ride has always been a dream of his and was encouraged by warrior expeditions to complete. Warrior expeditions which is a veteran nonprofit outdoor therapy program, helps veterans transition from their wartime experiences through long-distance outdoor expeditions. Mr. de la Garza has always enjoyed cycling and is

an advocate for rails to trails bike lanes and safer routes to school. His wife Beth, whom is also a La Feria Native and a Class of 1980 alumni, has fully supported him in his endeavor. He served both in the Navy and Army which taught him many important life lessons along the way. He also worked for the Harlingen Fire Department for 21 years and is now retired. He and his family live in Laguna Vista where he enjoys his hobbies of surfing, stand up paddle boarding, playing the guitar and of course bicycle riding. Mr. De la Garza started out his journey on May 27, 2021 in Washington D.C. and ended his bike run in La Push, Washing-

ton. He totaled 74 riding days along the route. It was an experience he’ll never forget and wants to Thank everyone for their continued support, payers and blessings sent his way for his journey. He stated “We have many problems in our country and the world, however if we focus on commonal-

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and for many the subject of suicide is off limits. They believe the mere mention of suicide around friends and family can cause suicidal thoughts for them. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Approximately 47,500 Americans died by their own hand in 2019, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death in this nation. Suicide rates in the US have climbed 33% in the last decade. One of the ways to reduce that number is by talking about suicide and suicidal ideation, which can spur meaningful conversations about mental health and potentially save lives. Even more concerning is that suicide and suicide attempts among our nation’s youth (ages 10-24) are on the rise. According to information released

last year by the CDC, 19% of youth had seriously considered attempting suicide, 16% had made a suicide plan, 9% had made a suicide attempt, and 2.5% had made a suicide attempt that was significant enough to require medical treatment. Join the conversation, and reach out to those who have been personally affected by suicide, raise awareness, and connect those struggling with suicidal ideation to professional counselors and treatment services that can help them. If your child or someone you love is struggling with depression or thinking about suicide, get help now. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273TALK (8255), is a free resource, available 24 hours a day for anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

The Crisis Text Line is a free 24/7 text line where trained crisis counselors support individuals in crisis. Text “Jason” to 741741 to speak with a compassionate, trained Crisis Counselor. Confidential support 24/7, for free.

The Jason Foundation (JFI) is another available resource. Although September is set aside as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, JFI works toward suicide prevention all year long. JFI is dedicated to the awareness and prevention of youth suicide through

educational programs that equip youth, parents, educators, and the community with the tools and resources to identify and assist atrisk youth. Many times, young people exhibit clear warnings signs prior to an attempt. By knowing the warning signs and knowing how to help, you could save a life. Visit The Jason Foundation’s website to learn more about youth suicide, the warning signs, and how you can help make a difference. JFI has never charged a school, community, or individual for the use of their programs or resources. http://www. jasonfoundation.com

TSTC, United Launch Alliance Continue to be Good Neighbors

Photo caption: United Launch Alliance on Airport Drive is across the street from Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus. (TSTC photo.)

(HARLINGEN, Texas) - South Texas and the solar system are closer than you think. As space shuttles inspired children of the 1980s, today’s space capsules and reusable rockets are motivating a new generation to dream galactic. “My students are going to be the technicians the aerospace world is hiring,” said Leo Guajardo, lead instructor in Texas State Technical College’s Aviation Maintenance program in Harlingen. United Launch Alliance on Airport Drive is next door to Valley International Airport and across the street from TSTC. The company has operated in its 300,000-square-

foot facility since 1990, producing adapters, engine sections and payload fairings for the Atlas V launch vehicle. The company also has locations in Alabama and Colorado, with launches taking place in California and Florida. Guajardo said ULA has been a good neighbor to TSTC, and their long relationship has proved valuable. He said in the past TSTC’s Aviation Maintenance students have acquired work experience at ULA as they took classes. “It is a leg into the aerospace industry, and it is extremely valuable,” Guajardo said. Heather McFarland, ULA’s communications specialist in strategic communications, said the

company is always seeking technicians who have skills in assembly, computer numerical controlled machine operations, crane operations and welding. TSTC fits the company’s mission of finding the best employees with a strong technical education. “We build great teams and partners to achieve legendary results,” she said. ULA has given financial gifts in the past to TSTC, including $40,000 in 2015 for the campus Challenger Learning Center’s planetarium. TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Aircraft Airframe Technology and an Aircraft Airframe Technician certificate of completion. Also offered

First Baptist Church, La Feria Like everyone, my heart is broken for the Afghan people trying leave the country. At least two people died clinging to a plane leaving Kabul, only to fall to their deaths. I have ranted and raved about the fundamentalist Muslim Taliban which wants women and girls to live as less than men. Whose religious views are characteristic of all fundamentalism, Muslim or Christian, antiintellectual, anti-ethical, and antichrist. Then it struck me how sympathetic I am for Afghans willing to risk their lives for better lives. But I am so unsympathetic for people from South America fleeing despot regimes. Oh, I am quick to point out the differences. The Taliban must be worse than the Cartel. Afghanistan must be worse than El Salvador, Honduras, or Guatemala. Is that true or the product of my prejudice? The only explanation for my hypocrisy is that there is a fat chance that someone from Afghanistan will move next door to me. Jesus asked the hard question. Who is my neighbor?

Hands-on work is key to students learning how to work within Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. “Our projects are preparing students for that (aerospace) world within the curriculum that exists,” Guajardo said. “A lot of the composite work we do is similar to the old foam and ceramic-type panels on the NASA space shuttles.”

A Prayer of Healing by James Arnold

The Next Chapter Three Poems Looking Beyond to See Within by James Arnold For a time needing love and its symbol the dove, Such a sad time indeed for our souls in great need. In messages of scorn such evil is born, Such darkness of heart makes violence to start. We should lift up each day those who fall by the way. The Savior above gave the world Gospel’s call, To see beyond race the Divine of others’ face.

In times of sickness and deep despair, Please know in truth that our God is there, And many friends Do ask in prayer That all is perfect And within his care, For everything Christ has a balm, And though we fear, His faith does calm. The love of all To you this day, And for your healing, Our souls do pray. And for the ones For whom you care, May God’s great love Their protection share. Amen.

A Vessel of Clay by James Arnold Dear Heavenly Father, Make of me a vessel for healing, For all around me fear and death are stealing. Thou the Potter and I the clay, Guide my heart through every day In what I write and what I say. Help me heed the Gospel’s call To lift up others when they fall. When fears abound, Thou can be found.

Cameron County Commissioners Court Honors Two 100-year-old Twins

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S BEEN REZONED OR HADN’T YOU HEARD? When local governments make decisions they are required to publish a newspaper notice to let you know. But that could change. Local governmental entities across the state want to bury their public notices on little seen, rarely visited government websites. What you don’t know will affect you personally!

UT Health RGV to Build Cancer and Surgery Center MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide advisory services

News and Internal Communications of UTRGV RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – AUGUST 19, 2021 – UT Health RGV is expanding its healthcare offerings in South Texas with a new Cancer and Surgery Center, with oncology advisory services provided by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center — a world leader in cancer care and research. The center is part of the phase 1 development of UTRGV’s McAllen Academic Medical Campus on the newly acquired 38 acres, located on the south side of Pecan Boulevard between Jackson and McColl roads within the 495 Commerce Center development. UTRGV President Guy Bailey said the Cancer and Surgery Center helps to address an underserved healthcare need in the region. “This is a pivotal moment in our commitment to expand healthcare services in the Rio Grande Valley, South Texas and beyond,” Bailey said. “We look forward to engaging with MD Anderson’s advisory services to develop and launch our cancer program. “I would like to thank Senator Juan ‘Chuy’ Hinojosa for his dedication and support of this important project,” Bailey added. Hinojosa, Texas senator

for District 20, said the new Cancer and Surgery Center is an important addition to the region. “We will keep working to secure the partnerships and investments necessary, so that in the future our patients in South Texas will have access to top-notch facilities and world-class doctors,” he said. “Working together, we can beat cancer.” ABOUT THE CENTER The 100,000-squarefoot Cancer and Surgery Center includes the cancer center, which will provide much-needed access to underserved specialties and clinical services in medical, radiation and surgical oncology, as well as clinical research across those areas. The surgery center will include outpatient surgery and imaging spaces to support continuity of care for patients through the full spectrum of their care journey. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2022, with completion in Spring 2024. Dr. Michael Hocker, dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, said the new complex is a gamechanger for the people of the region. The Rio Grande Valley has higher rates of many cancers, and many are advanced at initial detection. “Unfortunately, most everyone has had a family member or friend who has been affected by cancer,”

Hocker said. “Soon, we’ll have a center in our backyard that will provide first-rate cancer care from diagnosis through treatment. The complex also will provide more opportunities to expand the important cancer research already being conducted by our School of Medicine.” MD ANDERSON'S ADVISORY ROLE MD Anderson will provide advisory services, specifically in the areas of: Cancer program clinical operations. Recruitment of key physicians and staff in the areas of medical, radiation and surgical oncology. Virtual care services including disease site consultations, tumor boards, second opinion and virtual support. Multidisciplinary clinical planning. Space, facilities and equipment programming and design. Education for patients and staff. On August 24, 2021 the Cameron County Commissioners Court presented two special proclamations to the family of 100-year-old twins from Cameron County, Rosa and Sara Galvan. Rosa and Sara were born in Brownsville on January 22, 1921. They were two of fourteen siblings. Their mother unfortunately passed away when Rosa and Sara were only two years old and the large family was then divided up to be raised by their father and other relatives. Rosa was raised in the rural area known as Las Yescas East of Rio Hondo by Jaunita Galvan Soto. There she grew up until she met her husband Timoteo Salazar and married in 1936. Rosa raised thirteen children with her husband until his passing in 1959. In 1965 Rosa and seven of

her children moved to the city limits of Rio Hondo. Rosa continued to work hard to support her family, she worked at odd jobs, did sewing and ironing, and even picked cotton during the summers. Sara was raised in Brownsville by Eulalia Galvan and later in life worked at a textile company during the 1940’s and then worked for the Levi’s Strauss Company during the 50’s; all the while also working at a local grocery store during those decades. Though the twin sisters endured the hardship of being separated at an early age and lived through very challenging times in history, such as the Great Depression and devastating hurricanes such as Beulah in 1967, they lived and enjoyed life and kept in constant contact with each

other. Both sisters enjoyed meeting people along the way and taking part in community activities especially those involving faith and family. Rosa and Sara were recognized by the Commissioners’ Court for their joyful years of life. The Court approved and signed two special proclamations on August 10, 2021 honoring Rosa and Sara. According to several online sources, Rosa and Sara are ranked number 8 in the world of the oldest known living twins. Rosa and Sara were 100 years, 6 months, and 19 days of age as of date of the proclamations. Sadly Rosa Galvan passed away only days after the signing of the proclamations and before the proclamations could be presented to family members.
