Nelda Briones - LFN Something new and exciting has opened its doors in Los Fresnos. It’s a new wildlife park called Fragile Planet Wildlife Park. The Park is a 32.5-acre park that houses animals from across the globe. In the opening phase of the park, they will be offering educational guided tours and up-close encounters with the animals. They offer three tours at different prices and experience something different with each one. According to their website, one of their tours is the Wildlife Adventure. It offers an educational
and interactive experience that will put you nose close with owls, tortoises, and more. You walk away with a greater understanding of the animal’s natural world and you even get the opportunity to ask the trainers and educators questions about the animals in their care. You will also visit the camels where you’ll learn about Bactrian Camels and get to interact with them. Another tour is the Wildlife Alive tour where you’ll step into the shoes of their amazing animal trainers as you not only learn about the animal’s day, but experience first-

hand as you will reward the animals with treats and positive interaction. You’ll enjoy this package tour plus a one-on-one interaction with Bat-Eared Foxes, a Capuchin Monkey, Sloths, a Rhino Iguana and a tour of the Amphibian Lab. Their final tour is an experience your surely not to forget! You will join trainers and zookeepers in the water along with Asian Small Clawed Otters! This educational adventure is
perfect for participants ages 12 and up. As a spectator in the pool, you’ll be put in the position of becoming an otter diving board and experience the charming personalities of “Bubbles” and “Whis”. For information on how to book the tours and pricing go to their website at fpwildlifepark.com. The Park is hoping to open up Phase 2 of the park in the fall if the weather permits. They are hoping to put up
a massive pumpkin patch and corn maze. Additional fun to be had is photo opportunities, meet and greets with some of the animals, hay rides, and more. Fragile Planet Wildlife Park is located at 34748 FM 2480 in Los Fresnos, Tx. Community-centric services support children, youth, and families before a crisis
More than 1,500 Texas families will have access to one-stop centers of community support during a multi-year program to prevent child abuse and neglect. The effort is being funded through grants from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Five Texas organizations with long-standing ties to their communities will offer the services through the creation of new, innovative Family Resource Centers (FRCs). Once established, each FRC will serve as a welcoming hub for families in need based on their community’s unique culture and interests. Families can walk in and find a range of services – from supportive parenting groups, to childhood development guidance classes, to help securing housing and employment, and more – all in one place. “This is an exciting opportunity to fund family-focused centers of support based on local
communities’ needs. Each FRC will be just as unique as the Texas community it serves,” said Sasha Rasco, Chief Prevention and Community Wellbeing Officer for DFPS’s Prevention and Early Intervention Division (PEI). “By focusing on protective factors – teaching parents to be resilient, seek help in a crisis, connect with their community, learn positive parenting - FRCs help prevent abuse and neglect long before they become a problem.” The five FRC Grantees are: BCFS Health and Human Services in Cameron County. DePelchin Children’s Center in Harris County. El Paso Center for Children in El Paso County. Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo County. The SAFE Alliance in Travis County. FRCs in other states have seen positive results with more families accessing services and more children
kept safe from child maltreatment. Grantees in Texas will work with PEI for guidance and evaluation. The Texas Alliance for Child and Family Services will provide technical support and staff training for the grantees. “The Alliance will partner with DFPS to support the FRCs and to develop practical services and supports for our Texas families,” said Katie Olse, the Alliance CEO. “These one-stop centers are a part of the future of serving families and our role is to help these organizations adhere to national standards while
serving the unique needs of each community.” Funding for the FRCs comes from CommunityBased Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) dollars, and funds from the CBCAP American Rescue Plan Act. Grantees will receive $230,000 for Fiscal Year 2022, and $300,000 in Fiscal Years 2023, 2024 and 2025. Funding is expected to serve between 150-400 families annually. For more information about the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Division and supported programs, please visit PEI's webpages on the DFPS website.

Like everyone, my heart is broken for the Afghan people trying leave the country. At least two people died clinging to a plane leaving Kabul, only to fall to their deaths. I have ranted and raved about the fundamentalist Muslim Taliban which wants women and girls to live as less than men. Whose religious views are characteristic of all fundamentalism, Muslim or Christian, antiintellectual, anti-ethical, and antichrist. Then it struck me how sympathetic I am for Afghans willing to risk their lives for better lives. But I am so unsympathetic for people from South America fleeing despot regimes. Oh, I am quick to point out the differences. The Taliban must be worse than the Cartel. Afghanistan must be worse than El Salvador, Honduras, or Guatemala. Is that true or the product of my prejudice? The only explanation for my hypocrisy is that there is a fat chance that someone from Afghanistan will move next door to me. Jesus asked the hard question. Who is my neighbor?

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD’S BEEN REZONED OR HADN’T YOU HEARD? When local governments make decisions they are required to publish a newspaper notice to let you know. But that could change. Local governmental entities across the state want to bury their public notices on little seen, rarely visited government websites. What you don’t know will affect you personally!

CPRIT Awards $2.5 Million to UTRGV to Help Support Cancer Research
UTRGV recently received a $2.5 million CPRIT grant for an Integrated Cancer Research Core facility that will serve as a foundation for building the region’s growing cancer research network. Overseeing the core will be faculty from the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the UTRGV School of Medicine – Dr. Meena Jaggi, professor; Dr. Subhash Chauhan, professor and chair of the department; and Dr. Murali M. Yallapu, associate professor. (UTRGV Photo) By Maria Gonzalez UTRGV
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – AUG. 27, 2021 – UTRGV has received its first CPRIT grant – $2.5 million in funding for an Integrated Cancer Research Core facility that will serve as a foundation for building the Rio Grande Valley’s growing cancer research network. The core also will support the established South Texas Center of Excellence in Cancer Research to address disproportionate, cancerrelated health issues in the area. Dr. Michael B. Hocker, dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, said the CPRIT grant is extremely competitive. “To have been its recipient solidifies UTRGV’s commitment to providing better healthcare options across the Rio Grande Valley,” he said. Dr. Subhash Chauhan, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the UTRGV School of Medicine, is founding
director of the South Texas Center of Excellence in Cancer Research. “We are thrilled and excited to receive this CPRIT funding for the first time, and it will allow us to bring UTRGV and the Valley to the forefront for our cancer research efforts,” Chauhan said. He said it will help support UTRGV’s developing role in fasttrack cancer research in the state and place UTRGV researchers at the forefront of significant contributions in new, collaborative research projects. “With the help of this funding, our cancer researchers will be able to conduct very sophisticated experiments and will be able to develop newer cancer prevention strategies,” Chauhan said. The grant will help fund two major pieces of high-tech, state-of-theart equipment critical in the university’s cancer research. “These new instruments will allow researchers to conduct experiments related to cancer imaging in small-animal flow cytometry analysis in a single cell, along
with cellular imaging,” Chauhan said. The Integrated Cancer Research Core facility will serve as a critical location for researchers’ work with local cancer patient samples. Hocker said the grant will contribute to UTRGV’s promise to transform the medical landscape in the region. “This grant is going to help us reach those who seek essential cancer treatment without the need to travel out of the area,” he said. “It’s monumental.” Chauhan said UTRGV’s research collaborators play a critical role in this grant project. “I am highly thankful to our whole cancer research team, especially Dr. Meena Jaggi and Dr. Murali M. Yallapu, who are key players in this grant,” he said. “Both of these individuals will act as directors of the CPRITfunded Integrated Cancer Research Core.” “As an emerging cancer research group, we came up with a theme that has potential to revolutionize the landscape of cancer research in the Valley,” Chauhan said.
