Interact Club Makes Great Impact
This group, made up of about 15 students has been helping to volunteer alongside the North Harlingen Rotary club. The Interact club is only about 2 years old, and is growing! Emma Coleman, a Harlingen homeschooler as well as the Interact President says, last year they mostly did volunteer work alongside the North Harlingen Rotary club.
The North Harlingen Rotary club has been very supportive of their Interact group. Emma Coleman mentions one of the things they helped with is highway clean up, by TSTC.
They have been able to volunteer in other things as well with the Rotary club, but recently Emma had her own projects that she wanted to present, one being a blanket drive.
Coleman shares that
the idea came through her church. She says there are a lot of homeless people near their church and because of that her church has a ministry for those in need. She shares that she wanted to do a similar So she presented to the North Harlingen Rotary and they were all for it!
Natasha Jennings, one member of the Harlingen Rotary club, has especially been involved in helping the kids. Jennings shares that the Rotary also donated funds to help buy blankets at different thrift stores around. It’s just one way they are working together. Jennings, It’s their job to find gently used, quality blankets.
Emma mentions they have already received some donations from Saint Paul Luthern church, she also says they hope to get

Some names of honorable mention include Ros Salmeron, the North Harlingen Rotary President, Landon Jennings, and Danielle Coleman who is Emma’s mom.
The Interact group asks that anybody that would like to donate to please be sure to donate either gently used, or new blankets. The group wants to be sure anyone in need is able to get these blankets before the weather gets cold.
The last day for pickup will be November 11th. If you have any blankets you would like to donate, you can stop by the La Feria News office located at 128 W Oleander Ave and our hours are from 9AM-3PM Monday through Friday.

on by environmental conditions throughout the animal kingdom. It also could provide insights into how invasive species interact with environments new to them.
“The change is very similar to invasive ants once they move from their native range to an invasive range,” he said. “The idea is to better understand this syndrome in an ant species that can take a small, inconspicuous colony that then becomes an economic and ecological problem when damaging colonies get larger and larger.”
Written by Adam Russell
Research by Texas
A&M AgriLife Research scientists in the Texas A&M Department of Entomology showed a common ant species undergoes physiological and behavioral changes in unnatural settings.
“Consistent signatures of urban adaptation in a native, urban invader ant Tapinoma sessile,” published in Molecular Ecology, included work by principal author Alexander Blumenfeld, a former graduate research assistant; Ed Vargo, Ph.D., senior investigator and Endowed Chair of Urban and Structural Entomology; Anjel
Helms, Ph.D., a chemical ecologist and assistant professor; and PierreAndré Eyer, postdoctoral research associate, all in the Department of Entomology.
“Urbanization is a growing habitat around the world, and it’s becoming more important for organisms to develop ways to live when their natural settings are disturbed,” Vargo said. “Studies like this look at important questions regarding this change, ‘Can they adapt to urban environments and how?’”
Environment influences ants behavioral, chemical changes
The study focused
on Tapinoma sessile, a relatively small ant species commonly known as the house ant or sugar ant. It is the most common houseinvading ant across the U.S.
In its native environment, the house ant creates small, single-queen colonies typically found under leaf litter, rocks and logs, Vargo said. But in suburban/urban settings, these house ants build everexpanding multi-queen colonies around manmade structures such as sidewalks, plant containers and landscape mulching.
Vargo said the study provides a broad range of scientific application related to biological and behavioral change spurred
Answering questions about adaptive evolution
Researchers utilized a large genetic database to identify the chemical and behavioral changes that influenced the ants’ social organization, Vargo said. They explored and compared the population genetics and breeding structure within and between ants in several urban and undisturbed natural locations within their range.
Odorous house ants were observed and analyzed in natural and disturbed locations around the country including Indiana, Arkansas, Colorado and California.
The team analyzed the ant’s chemistry, such as
hydrocarbons, genetic makeups of colonies and behaviors, such as aggression toward familial and outsider ants, and found stark differences based on the environment, Vargo said.
The study found that house ants in urban and natural areas showed adaptations that resulted in genetic concentration. Vargo said house ant queens in their natural habitat typically leave the colony they were born in, fly to another suitable location and attempt to establish a new colony. Queens in urban colonies stay in the nest and expand the colony rather than leave.
As a result, urban queens were closely related and less aggressive toward ants with genetic relation. Behavioral analyses showed ants in supercolonies were aggressive toward ants with outside genetics.
Additionally, polydomous colonies, which are ant colonies that are spatially separate but socially connected, were only present in urban habitats, Vargo said. This suggests house ants only create super-colonies in developed areas. Ants from different urban areas shared some genetic similarities, suggesting
they are adapting to features that are common in the urban environment.
As a next step, researchers plan to compare stable isotopes in the ants to look at dietary changes and how they might relate to natural vs. urban environments and possible contributing factors like temperature and the urban heat island effect.
Vargo said the researchers have hypotheses but no data yet linking how and why changes occurred.
The research was initiated by Blumenfeld, who was a doctoral student in Vargo’s lab and is now a post-doctorate researcher at Yale University. He said he is interested in answering questions related to adaptive evolution in animals regardless of classification or species, and whether they are invasive or adapting to human-caused disturbances, including cities.
“The study highlights urbanization’s influence on the evolutionary course for species,” he said. “It’s important for us to answer questions related to adaptive evolution, whether it is an invasive species or a forest species adapting to city environments.”

During the summers, my family gathers at a small coastal resort in South Carolina for a week.
On Friday, September 30, we started to receive photos of the pier at that resort. The final photo was the end of the pier washing out to sea.
Through text messaging, our family groans were almost audible. This was the pier where the grandchildren caught their first fish. It was where some of us gathered to hear music and listen to the waves; a music of its own. It was the pier for midnight walks and long talks. And it was gone.
My grief was put into context by news of the deaths that hurricane Ian had caused. Photos of people who had not lost a vacation rental but the family home, put my loss in perspective.
But why was I so moved by the lost resort pier rather than the devastation in Florida? Was it because I had walked on that pier and laughed on that pier. I knew that pier. Or, maybe the reason is darker.
When the prophet Jonah was sulking over God saving the city of Nineveh, he took joy in a small plant that shaded him. When that plant shriveled and died, Jonah grieved for the plant.
10 But the Lord said, ‘You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left – and also many animals?’
There is a proverb. “I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet.” No one knows for certain who said that. But it rings true. All losses are real. However, all are not the same.

VBHS Highlights Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Valley Baptist Health System Stresses Importance of Screening Mammograms as October Highlights Breast Cancer Awareness Month
BROWNSVILLE & HARLINGEN – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Valley Baptist Health System is raising awareness throughout the Rio Grande Valley community about prevention and treatment.
In addition to raising awareness, Valley Baptist Imaging Services is offering $90 2D mammograms and $115 3D mammograms throughout October to encourage preventive care. MDSave vouchers are available all month by visiting: http:// www.mdsave.com/mammo.
It is important to note that vouchers purchased during the month of October can be used up to six months after purchase.
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer accounts for more than one in three cancers diagnosed in the United States, making it the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer.
“About one in eight women will be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer during their lifetime,” said Joey Govea, Director of Imaging Services for Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen. “It’s important for women to take time for themselves by making their annual visit to their doctor, maintaining routine selfexams and ensuring they are getting mammograms as recommended by their healthcare provider. While the COVID-19 pandemic led to many, many women delaying routine screening, it is so very important that we encourage everyone to not skip or postpone something as important as their mammograms.”
Early detection through mammogram screenings, increased public awareness of breast cancer and improved treatments have helped reduce the rate of
death from breast cancer in the United States. Mammogram screenings can detect breast cancer when it is smaller and more confined to the breast, allowing the cancer to be treated more easily.
Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, early detection through regular mammograms can save improve treatment outcomes and save lives.
Govea said Valley Baptist Health System utilizes a full array of services related to breast health to help local women detect early signs of trouble and work with their healthcare providers to determine the best course of treatment.
“Valley BaptistHarlingen and Valley Baptist-Brownsville are proud to offer the latest in breast cancer care through comprehensive screening services to include, 3D digital screening mammography, breast ultrasound and stereotactic biopsies,” Govea said.
Since communities throughout the Valley still face the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Valley Baptist continues to offer a number of safeguards to protect patients from the virus. Because conditions can often worsen if they are not addressed in a timely manner, it is important not to delay regular health screenings which include mammograms, said Greg Ruiz, Director of Imaging Services for Valley Baptist Medical CenterBrownsville.
“Women should not be fearful or apprehensive about resuming their health screenings,” he said. “We continue to provide our community with the highest quality of healthcare in the safest environment. We are taking patient safety extremely serious. On a daily basis we
continue to care for patients that have conditions that make them susceptible for COVID-19 — we are able to accomplish this by maintaining strict infection control measures throughout our hospitals.”
Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville has also expanded its services to offer local women additional options to receive their critical mammogram screenings that could ultimately be life-saving.
While 2D and 3D mammograms have long been offed at Valley Baptist-Brownsville’s main campus, the screenings are now available at the Valley Baptist Outpatient Imaging Center-Brownsville located in north Brownsville, Ruiz said.
“We’re working as hard as we can to provide our community with options for receiving this muchneeded service,” he said.
“Early detection of breast cancer is absolutely critical when it comes to the quality of care and service for our community.”

The Recap La Feria Lions First Half recap
By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News
As the first half of the season has come to a close, the La Feria Lions have had a roller coaster of a season so far. Sitting at 3-3 on the season, here’s a look at what has transpired so far.
After the week one 42-21 loss to Donna, the La Feria Lions Bounced back and returned to their winning ways. The Lions defeated PSJA Southwest 27-25 in a week two thriller that came down to the wire. Brownsville Pace was then up next for the Lions. What started off as a close game ended with the Lion offense and defense exploding in the second half. Four touchdowns were scored by La Feria in less than four minutes. La
Feria would hold on to win 42-41. In week four, The Lions then faced off against the powerhouse Mercedes Tigers. In a game where offense stole the show, La Feria outlasted Mercedes to win a thriller by 53-47.
Heading into District 16-4A DI play, the Lions opened up district with a home game against Alice. The offense and defense lit the charts up for the Coyotes, blanking the Lions 73-13 in La Feria’s second loss of the season.
Looking to bounce back in week 6, La Feria traveled up the Coastal bend to take on the Tuloso-Midway Warriors. In what was truly a rough outing, La Feria was not able to withstand the Warriors’ offense.
T-M’s defense also played a factor and suppressed the
lion offense. La Feria fell short to Tuloso-Midway 28-23.
Due up in 2022 for the Lions, will be powerhouse Calallen in week seven. In Week eight, La Feria will take on the Hidalgo Pirates in a key district matchup.
In Week nine, The Lions will host the Zapata Hawks in the final home game of the regular season. Week ten will have La Feria travel to TAMUK to take on the HM King Brahmas in the final game of the season before La Feria will have a BYE in Week 11.
Last season, the Lions finished off the regular season as the 16-4A Division I champions. La Feria still has plenty of time to turn the tide in this tough district.
A Statement making win
Santa Rosa outlasts Odem in a thriller
By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News
In week six of the 2022 Texas High School Football season, The Santa Rosa Warriors faced off against the Odem Owls. The Warriors, who are 5-1 on the season, were coming off a big win over George West 13-12. The Odem Owls, who have had a rough start in 2022, were looking to capture their first win of the season.
The First quarter proved to be a defensive
showing with both teams were scoreless in the first quarter. Odem would play a more solid defense to limit Santa Rosa to one touchdown in the second quarter. Odem’s offense also backed up the strong defense, scoring two touchdowns to lead 14-7 at the half.
The second half proved to be controlled by Santa Rosa both offensively and defensively. The Warriors scored two touchdowns and shut down Odem in the third quarter to take
the lead 21-14. Odem then responded in the fourth quarter. Despite scoring six points, and not allowing Santa Rosa to score, The Warriors would hold on to win 21-20.
Santa Rosa will now face off against Taft on the road. After a Bye in week eight, the Warriors will host Monte Alto on October 21. Santa Rosa will then take on Hebbronville on October 28. Lastly Santa Rosa will host Banquete on November 4th for the regular season game.

The Next Chapter
Seeing by James E. Arnold
I cast my gaze to Heavens Above. I am awash in God’s Great Love. The fluffy clouds go floating by Like sails of ships—I want to cry. I see dark clouds that bring me rain. And blooms of flowers on desert plain. I hear the cries of birds on high. They have such beauty—they make me sigh. Yet far beyond what I can see Are such great mysteries That beckon me.
I see such Order—it gives me Ardor. Why is there Life—and much, much more? You sent Your Son to even our score. The tapestry of butterflies that helps flowers bloom Reminds us Life is Eternal, And the grave an empty tomb. I thank Thee for it all, For it would never be Without the Great Creator. How could such things be? Amen.
