New Pizza Chain Comes to La Feria

La Feria, TX — It’s official, Pizza Hut is coming to La Feria. It’s exciting to see all the new development happening in La Feria; seeing just how the City has grown in the last few years. Just this past year, we’ve seen subdivisions breaking ground, a larger gas station, a Dollar Tree, Subway relocating to a larger space, a small plaza for more businesses, and more.

The new Pizza hut will

be located at 717 N. Main St. La Feria, TX 78559 across from Dollar Tree and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Currently standing there is an old mechanic shop. Demolition is expected to start soon, with strong confidence in clearing out the property by December and starting construction on the new building.

This Pizza Hut will be a drive-thru or pick-up only.

More updates in the near future, as the information develops. Stay tuned for more.

TIES Students Make Big Strides

La Feria High School Students have been making great strides in the community through the TIES program at La Feria Highschool. TIES stands for Transition to Independence Employment and Success and the objective of the TIES Program is to provide students, from 18-22 years old, with work-based

learning opportunities in the community.

Leslie Lazaro, the TIES Program Teacher, explains that some of the TIES students who are interested in careers in Food Service back in September received their Food Handlers Certificate and are now working in the LFHS Cafeteria 2-3 times per week.

La Feria ISD posted on their Facebook saying,

“These students will be receiving training in Food Service Careers with the LFISD Food Service Department. We are very proud of this AWESOME accomplishment...Our T.I.E.S. Students are CAREER READY!”

She says the other students perform work on

campus helping out the office staff. They make copies, collect attendance, and shred papers. They also recently completed a Self-Advocacy Course provided in conjunction with Texas Workforce Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

“During the summer, we had two students participate in the Summer

Earn and Learn program.” This program is for young adults and it’s provided by Texas Workforce Commission. Lazaro says that one student worked at La Feria City Hall during clerical work and the other student worked at Goodwill sorting and stocking merchandise.

The TIES program aims to provide skills in many aspects, including Social Skills, Decision-making skills, Career awareness, Health, Nutrition & Personal Hygiene, Money Management, Services in the Community, and Recreation & Leisure according to La Feria ISD’s website.

The habitat: The Rio Grande Valley’s unique ecosystem is comprised of coastal marshes and plains in the east, desert chaparral in the west and a lush corridor of riparian woodlands along the river.

The birds: North America has about 950 species of birds. The United States has over 800, Texas has 600, 500 of those can be found in the Rio Grande Valley and about 30 of those can only be found in the South Texas tip.

The history: In 1994 the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce and

members of the birding community capitalized on the RGV’s biodiversity with an initiative to create the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. Propelled by volunteers and funded by sponsored dollars, the first festival was a success and served as a model to many festivals across the country and abroad. Birding and nature tourism were making waves and the RGV was on the leading edge.

The money: Today nature festivals are popping up across the country and after 29 years, the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival is still making waves. In 2019, the festival hosted 600 attendees from 38 states and 12 countries. This is a massive boon to local commerce. In fact, the immediate impact of a recent RGVBF was totaled at 3 million dollars to the local economy.

According to a 2014 Texas A&M Economic Impact Study, ecotourism has an economic impact of nearly half a billion dollars on the Rio Grande Valley

annually, extrapolating to over 6000 jobs in the Valley.

Registration for the 29th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival has begun.

Anyone interested in attending a seminar or a field trip needs to register at www.rgvbf. org. The festival will take place on November 9th-13th at the Harlingen Convention Center in Harlingen, Texas. The festival includes field trips, seminars, a trade show, a silent auction, a raptor show, kids’ activities and free family fun. A keynote speaker for the event will be Christina Baal, the 2022

Bird of the Year Artist for the American Birding Association. A wide array of guided field trips throughout the Rio Grande Valley are offered. There are boat trips, photography excursions, meet on-site as well as bus and van tours to private ranches, South Padre Island, King Ranch, national refuges and other areas that are home to an abundance of birds. The Rio Grande Valley has over 20 specialty birds including Altamira Orioles, Aplomado Falcons, Green Jays and Great Kiskadees.

For more information, please visit www.rgvbf. org.

In accordance with the Order of the Office of the Governor issued March 16, 2020, the City of La Feria will conduct the meeting and provide audio/telephonic availability for the public using live stream in order to advance the public health goal of limiting face-to-face meetings (also called “social distancing”) to slow the spread of the Coronavirus (also known as Covid-19). Occasionally, I write a check over $1,000. Once, I had to write a check over $10,000. It was not my money. The number was so large, I ran out of room on the check. Zeros take up a lot of space.

If $10,000 was hard for me, I cannot imagine $20,000,000. Last month, someone had to learn to write a lot of zeros. A winning multi-million-dollar lotto ticket was sold in La Feria. The winner took a chance by buying a $100.00 ticket. It was a gamble. But is the lottery gambling? And is gambling wrong?

Ironically, the Bible does not speak badly of gambling. In fact, at times important decisions are made by religious leaders by casting lots or rolling the dice. Then, what is so bad about the lottery?

For one, statistics show that many of the people who play cannot afford to pay. In other words, most of the people who buy lottery tickets do so not out of recreation but maybe a little desperation. The lottery can be like the payday loan business, which often preys on those who can least afford it.

Second, Proverbs 13:11 “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” Or, as we say, “Easy come, easy go.” More than one winner would say later. “Winning was the worst thing that happened to me. When the money ran out, troubles ran in.

Despite all of that, we still buy tickets. Maybe like Twain, we know having a lot of money might ruin us. But still, we would like to try it for a little while.

Midway point for La

Feria Football

At last, Football has returned to Texas. Fans across the Lone Star State are excited to get to the stadium and cheer on the gladiators of the gridiron. Here in La Feria, the Lions are set to begin the 2022 Texas High School Season.

La Feria had a strong 2021 season. Finishing as the 2021 District 16-4A Division 1 champions, the Lions fell short to BeevilleJones in the Bi-District round of the playoffs. Now looking ahead, the Lions 2022 Schedule has already been released.

After the success of 2021 which included an overall record of 7-2, a district winning record of 4-0, La Feria will once again compete in

District 16-4A Division

1. Only this time, there are some new additions to the district. La Feria will now be slated with Alice, Calallen, Tuloso-Midway, Hidalgo, Kingsville King and Zapata. A lot tougher district with the additions of Coastal Bend Powerhouses Calallen, T-M, and Alice, La Feria looks to continue their 2021 dominance into 2022.

To start the 2022 Season La Feria currently sits 3-2 on the season.

After the Week one loss to Donna, La Feria Bounced back with three straight wins over PSJA Southwest, Brownsville Pace and Mercedes. District 16-4A D1 kicked off with a 73-13 loss to Alice

The District Schedule continues in week six as the Lions take on the Warriors

at Tuloso-Midway. Week seven the Lions will host the Calallen Wildcats. Week eight, La Feria will travel to Hidalgo to take on the Pirates. Week nine will be homecoming as La Feria will go against the Zapata Hawks, which will also be the final home game of the regular season. Week 10 wraps up with La Feria taking a trip up north to face off against the Brahmas of Kingsville King.

Truly a tough schedule, the Lions will look to go back to back and successfully defend their District title. Heading into the season, the defending District Champion always goes into the year with a target on their back. La Feria looks ready to take on all challengers under the Friday Night Lights.

Estero Llano Grande by James E. Arnold

Beneath the purest and cloudy blue skies

Lies a great gift from nature. Here the calling bird cries, The wind through the trees, Like nature’s breath of life, Can lift up our hearts And counter great strife. As we walk ‘long each path, Free our hearts from all wrath, And let all that we meet, We lovingly greet.

For the call of a dove Does reflect God’s great Love. Its beauty does sweeten A South Texas Eden. Amen.

The Port Of Harlingen Celebrates 70 Years

HARLINGEN, TX –

The Port of Harlingen Authority celebrated 70 years in operation and the dedication of the new addition of the Port’s Administration Building with a ribbon cutting event, Thursday, Sept. 23.

On Feb. 27, 1952, The Port of Harlingen Authority, then The Arroyo Colorado Navigation District of Willacy and Cameron Counties (ACND), officially opened for business. Similar to the celebration held 70 years ago, in conjunction with the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce, a ribbon cutting celebration marked a milestone in the Port’s history.

“It has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of The Port of Harlingen for the last 34 years,” Alan Johnson, Port Board Chairman, said. “When I first came on the board my thought was to give it a try, one term, to see if it was the right fit. Here we are so many years later and thanks to the service of some wonderful community members who have served on this board since the beginning, we are seeing many years of planning and work come to fruition.”

Created in 1926, The Port of Harlingen began as an idea supported by Former Vice President John Nance Garner, then a state senator, and then Harlingen Mayor S.F. Ewing, and three individuals; J.B. Chambers, J.R. George and Tyre H. Brown who comprised the newly created ACND, pursuant to Article XVI, Chapter 59 of the Texas Constitution, enabled by Chapter 62 of the Texas Water Code.

In its early years, The

Port was a terminal for steel, gasoline and fuel oil, ice, fish and shrimp. Today, The Port still moves refined petroleum products, but has expanded commodities transporting agricultural products, liquid and dry fertilizer, aggregates, and raw sugar.

“What started as one dock and a grain elevator has grown into a more than 2,000-acre multimodal transportation operation moving more than 3 million tons of goods annually through our region,” said Port Director Walker Smith. “We are growing, in fact, over the last five years our tonnage has increased more than 200%, which says a lot about the economic development and interest in the Harlingen community.”

Regional community leaders were in attendance commemorating the Port’s milestone, including Ana Garcia, South Texas Regional Director for U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, who read a letter on Cornyn’s behalf calling The Port of Harlingen an economic driver for South Texas.

Representing the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce board, Archie Drake with Valley Baptist Medical Center, said The Port of Harlingen has become more than just a mode of transportation for local industry, but a staple in the development of the community.

“What most of you probably do not know is the impact The Port of Harlingen really has on our community,” he said. “In fact, in 1954 steel to build our hospital, Valley Baptist Medical Center, came through this very port. The goods that move through their docks and facilities, they become the things we

eat, that make our clothing, fuel our vehicles and even materials that build our businesses and homes.”

The Port of Harlingen would like to thank all our community members that served on our Board of Commission since the beginning.
