With the new structures going up in La Feria, folks are wondering what’s happening. Theories have circulated but La Feria News is here to shed some light on the two buildings on 109, Ninth St. and 901 N Main St. The first structure, adjacent to TitleMax will be the new Subway location. The owner of both locations Luis Garcia states that as of right now, they are still working on

both locations but says that the new subway location should be ready in 3-4 months. As for the other corner, it’ll be a small plaza and should be available by the end of the summer as well. No word yet from Subway management as to when they plan to move or what the old location will be. City Planning Director, Juan Ortiz had no additional information but says he’s sure we’ll see in the coming months what comes about.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Two news stories caught my attention last week. The first was the story of Amy Bauernschmidt, a captain in the US Navy. The Navy owns 11 aircraft carriers. Only one of those carriers has a woman as captain. Amy Bauernshmidt is that woman. Bauernshmidt commands the USS Abraham Lincoln, a Nimitz-class carrier. 5000 people call the ship home as do 60 aircraft. It is 1,092 feet long and is powered by 2 nuclear reactors. Women have been allowed to serve on combat vessels only since 1993. Still, only 20% of Navy personnel are women and less than 13% are officers. Which makes Captain Bauernshmidt even more impressive. The second story involves the three soccer organizations that govern men’s and Women’s soccer in the United States. After careful deliberation the organizations have agreed to equalize FIF World Cup prize money for teams competing in World Cups. Now, at least as far as the United States goes, men and women will receive equal pay on the soccer field. “You’ve come a long way baby,” was a slogan for a 1960s cigarette commercial. Today, it fits better to mark the progress women have made in a man’s world. But the progress is not universal, nor enough. I heard the story of a church looking for a pastor. The pastor search committee sat down with the candidate. “You interviewed wonderfully. Your preaching was excellent. You have good training and perfect references. But we do not think you are right for our church.” She asks, “But why?” -Mark S. Ross DMin.

As The Baseball and Softball Seasons have come to an end for the majority of teams from the Rio Grande Valley. However, for three teams, The Roads to Round Rock and Austin still continue. For Baseball in the Valley 31-5A’s Sharyland Pioneer and 31-6A’s La Joya remain alive as they prepare for the Regional Semifinal. Sharyland Pioneer has been red hot since the beginning of the 2022 season. Pioneer has definitely bounced back from their early postseason exit in 2021. So far in 2022, The Diamondbacks have been led by the stellar pitching of Senior Angel

Larranaga, who currently holds an ERA of 2.51, has been on fire in his final season as a Diamondback. After sweeping the Brownsville Porter Cowboys in the Bi-District Round, the Diamondbacks faced off against the Moody Trojans and took it to 3 games to capture the series in the Area Round. Heading into the Regional Quarterfinals, Pioneer was slated against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles. After a tough series, the Diamondbacks prevailed 2-1. Now Sharyland Pioneer is set to face off against Buda Johnson out of District 26-5A. On the 6A Side of things, the La Joya Coyotes have been electric in 2022.

June is PTSD Awareness Month

The Next Chapter Poem Wisdom

Knowledge isn’t power unless you understand it, but understanding is only still an adolescent until it has met experience, then it becomes wisdom. by Emilio

National PTSD Awareness Month is observed in June and it ushers in an array of awareness campaigns run for the benefit of PTSD Survivors. PTSD stands for PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, which occurs in people after they have experienced a particularly traumatic event like war, violent physical/sexual/verbal assault, accidents and so forth. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, nightmares, paranoia, insomnia, disturbing thoughts and much more. Many people recover from PTSD after a few days, weeks or months. Yet, for others, the recovery road might mean one year or more. This mental disorder is treatable, but due to the lack of knowledge around it as well as the stigma attached to seeking mental help,

many choose to ignore the problem and suffer through it. Some studies suggest that suicide risk is higher among those who experienced trauma due to the symptoms of PTSD. A study from the National Comorbidity Survey, a national representative sample, showed that PTSD alone was significantly associated with suicidal ideation or attempts. A later study by the Canadian Community Health Survey data also found that respondents with PTSD were at a higher risk for suicide attempts. Among people who have had a diagnosis of PTSD at some point in their lifetime, approximately 27% have also attempted suicide. Another large-scale survey found that 24% of military personnel diagnosed with PTSD

had experienced suicidal thinking within the past year. According to the Journal of Emergency Services, there is a silent crisis happening worldwide. First responders are quietly suffering because of the stigma surrounding the utilization of mental health services. First responders are approximately ten times more likely to have suicidal ideations and/or attempt suicide compared to the CDC national average. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273TALK (8255), is a free resource, available 24 hours a day for anyone who is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The crisis text line is a free 24/7 text line where trained crisis counselors support individuals in crisis. Text “Jason” to 741741 to speak with a

AgriLife Extension Supporting ‘Click It or Ticket’ Efforts

The Click It of Ticket campaign advises people in the front seat of passenger cars wearing a seat belt reduces their risk of dying by 45%. It goes up to 60% for those wearing seat belts in the front seat of pickup trucks. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Paul Schattenberg) Written by Paul Schattenberg Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is supporting efforts by state and national traffic safety agencies and police and sheriffs’ departments to save lives by promoting increased front and back seat belt use. “We support the Texas Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Texas Department of Public Safety and law enforcement in their Click It or Ticket campaign,” said Bev Kellner, AgriLife Extension project director — passenger safety, Bryan-College Station. “This year, the campaign is May 23-June 5, which includes the Memorial Day weekend. For this effort and in general,

AgriLife Extension is urging Texas drivers and backseat passengers to buckle up.” Taking time to buckle your seat belt is the single most important step you can take to protect yourself in a vehicle crash, Kellner said. Benefits of wearing seat belts “Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying by 45% for people in the front seat of passenger cars,” Kellner said. “They also reduce the risk of dying by 60% for drivers of pickups, because pickups are twice as likely to roll over as passenger vehicles.” Kellner said that passengers are wearing their seat belts in the front seat, but many passengers riding in the back seat do not feel they need to

buckle their seat belts. “Unbelted backseat passengers can become human projectiles, injuring themselves and the other passengers, even those wearing seatbelts,” she said. Testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that a driver who has an unbelted passenger sitting behind them is twice as likely to die in a wreck, even if wearing a seatbelt. “When traveling at just 35 mph, the unbelted rear passenger will slam into the driver with force strong enough to deflate the airbag,” Kellner explained. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2020, the number of people who died while not wearing a seat belt increased by 16% over 2019, with 1,073 unbuckled drivers and passengers killed on Texas roadways. “Texas law requires the driver and all passengers in a vehicle to be secured by a seat belt, Kellner said. “Unbuckled adult drivers and passengers, even those in the back seat, can be fined and face court costs of up to $250. She also noted that children younger than 8 must be in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4–feet 9-inches. “Now, more than ever, it is important to wear a seat belt in the front and

the back and make sure that children are buckled up properly,” she said. “Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants from being ejected in a crash and increases the chances of surviving by 45%. In pickup trucks, that number increases to 60%.”

Additional safety tips Kellner also provided some related safety tips for drivers and passengers: — Children should ride in the back seat until 13 years old. “Until a child reaches age 13, their bones are not fully developed,” she explained. “Placing a child whose bones are not yet strong enough in the front seat — where there is the windshield, dashboard and airbags — puts them at greater risk of injury or death during a crash.” — Pickup trucks, while big and strong, are twice as likely to roll over in a crash due to their higher center of gravity. “Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying in a crash in a pickup truck,” Kellner said. “It is important to always make sure that the driver and every passenger in a pickup truck is buckled up,” — Buckling up is not just for the daytime. “Between 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m., more crashes and fatalities happen,”

Young children should be securely buckled into a safety seat in the back seat of the vehicle. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo) she said. “At night, the visibility is less, and many drivers are tired,” she said. “There’s also the possibility that some drivers in the early morning hours may be impaired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” — Buckle up on short trips as well as long ones. “Don’t think you can skip buckling your seat belt if it’s a short trip. Most fatal crashes happen within 25 miles of home and at speeds of less than 40 mph.” Increased law enforcement activity Kellner said because this year’s campaign time frame includes the Memorial Day weekend — when many people take to the road to enjoy a long weekend — drivers will likely see additional law enforcement activity, including seat belt and

child restraint checks. “These officers are not out there just to write tickets; they want to help prevent needless tragedies associated with vehicle crashes,” she said. “It just takes a few seconds to buckle up and save your life. Buckling up isn’t something to do just during Click It or Ticket. It’s something every driver and passenger should do automatically each time they get into a vehicle – day or night.” Kellner noted when the Click It or Ticket campaign launched in 2002, only 76% of Texans used their seat belts. “According to Texas Department of Transportation data from 2021, almost nine out of 10 drivers and passengers buckle their seat belts,” she said. “That’s pretty good, but there’s still room for improvement.”

UTRGV Engineering Technology Program Signs MOU with Catholic Diocese for Solar Panel Project

Dr. Jesus Gonzalez, assistant professor of practice, UTRGV Engineering Technology Program; Eugenio "Gene" Reyes, engineering technology student; and Dr. Immanuel Edinbarough, professor, UTRGV Engineering Technology Program, have partnered with the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville to help the organization find a reputable solar panel company to carry out installations, as well as help educate UTRGV engineering students on the impact of using solar energy as a cost-effective resource for environmentally friendly energy. (UTRGV Photo by David Pike) By Amanda A. TaylorUchoa BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – MAY 18, 2022 – Glinting in the sun across South Texas, solar panels have made a push into the region touting cleaner and more affordable energy. Splayed over the roofs of homes, scattered across open fields, or towering in parking lots, solar panels can be spotted everywhere these days. The recent push for clean energy has been adopted by many large companies, such as Target and Apple to name a few. Closer to

home, the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville has taken a step toward green energy, as well. To help oversee the installation of solar panels at two parishes in Brownsville, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was established between the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville and the UTRGV Engineering Technology Program within the College of Engineering and Computer Science in August of last year. The Catholic Diocese, a nonprofit organization, owns 72 parishes, 44

missions and 14 Catholic schools across Starr, Hidalgo, Willacy and Cameron counties. The partnership with UTRGV will help the organization find a reputable solar panel company to carry out installations, as well as help educate UTRGV engineering students on the impact of using solar energy as a cost-effective resource for environmentally friendly energy. Dr. Jesus Gonzalez, assistant professor of practice in the program, said the diocese reached out to them for help with

technical support. “We were contacted by a representative from the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville for help with powering some of the parishes with solar energy,” Gonzalez said. “We would provide technical support, not fabrication or installing the project for them, but rather consulting them on what solar panel energy is and how it could help them and how to select a viable vendor.” With so many solar panel companies in existence, he said, it can be hard to decipher which companies are legitimate. “We are helping them select better candidates to go on to the next steps and proceed with the project,” he said. The first part of the project includes the UTRGV program providing requests for qualifications (RFQs) and requests for proposals (RFPs) to the Catholic Diocese, which entails research and time. So far, RFPs have been drafted to give to bidders, so potential companies can provide quotes based on stated terms. There have been visits to parishes, with a diocese contact planning all visits, as the university is not involved with the overall decision-making concerning costs, but only is overseeing technical analysis of the companies.

The second part, Gonzalez said, is describing the solar panel installation, such as where it will be installed, what types of equipment are needed, types of warranties needed, and overall service. Assisting with the project is Eugenio “Gene” Reyes, a UTRGV junior from Raymondville pursuing an engineering technology degree. He is interning with the Catholic Diocese to maintain project flow. “So far, I’ve learned how solar energy works and am getting into the business aspects of engineering,” he said. “I’ve been able to break down documents and work with associates to help this type of nonprofit organization. It’s been an eye-opening experience.” The project touches a personal note for Reyes. “My aunt was taken advantage of by a solar company, and the energy bills were actually higher than before the installation,” he said. “With the church reaching out to us, they know that there are scammers out there, so it’s reassuring to them that we are looking for companies that have done many projects for many years.” Dr. Immanuel Edinbarough, a professor in UTRGV’s Engineering Technology program, said that while the diocese has parish members and

potential investors to help support continuity of the solar panel project, they were lacking the technical knowledge for implementation. “They want the university to be the neutral authority coming in and giving them advice on the technical front, including who is going to implement the installation and how it is going to be maintained,” Edinbarough said. Within the project, there is potential for future research projects for UTRGV students to learn about the performance of solar systems on a larger scale. “They assured us that once we fully implement the project and it’s running, we will have free access for our students to go there and look at how the project was implemented, and they will learn the technical support of a project like that,” Edinbarough said. While no solar panel company has been selected yet, the Catholic Diocese has received all documents from UTRGV to help them select companies to be interviewed for the project. The installation process is slated to start next year. The UTRGV Engineering Technology Program, overseen by Dr. Robert Jones, will continue to be a part of the project in the future.
