one out of six children, him being the oldest. Marge Lane and Phil, Joan W, Mary and Rick Bearhead, Tom W, Pat, and Pattie W. Tim was a loving and helpful husband, friend, and neighbor; always there to help. He had a big heart and was kind to all. His passion was landscaping and he was very good at growing just about anything. You could always tell Tim was happy when outside working on anyone's lawns and/or gardens. The memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ on North 7th Street on September 17th, 2022.

• If you have a small child, always look in the vehicle — front and back — before locking the door and walking away. • When parking a multipassenger vehicle, ensure no children are sleeping on the seats or hiding under them. Identify and use safe play areas for children — away from parked or moving vehicles. Look into technologies that can help remind you that a child is in the back seat, such as the WAZE traffic app reminder and sensor Kellnersystems.said other ways to help avoid children being accidentally locked in hot vehicles are to use drive-thru services when available and pay for gas at the pump with a debit or credit card instead of going inside. Adults must take extra efforts to remember not to leave a child unattended in a vehicle, especially on hot days. (Photo courtesy National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

Tips for avoiding child hot-carKellnerdeathssaid more than half of child deaths from hot cars are due to caregivers forgetting they had a child in the vehicle. “These deaths are entirely preventable if a few precautions are taken,” sheKellnersaid. preaches the “ACT” approach of the Safe Kids organizationWorldwidetoreduce the possibility of a child being left alone in a hot vehicle. The “A” stands for avoiding heat stroke-related injury and death by never leaving a child alone in a car, not even for a minute. The “C” is for creating a visual reminder that a child is in the back seat — placing a phone, gym bag, briefcase, purse or other frequently used items in the back seat with the child.

The letter was prompted by President Biden’s Executive Order #14019 on Promoting Access to Voting, which directed an all-of-government effort to promote information about the voting process and to further the ability of all eligible Americans to participate in democracy.

The “T” stands for taking action, particularly calling 911 if you see a child alone in a “Andvehicle.ifyour own child is locked in a car, get him or her out as quickly as possible and dial 911 immediately,” Kellner said. “Emergency personnel are trained to evaluate and check for signs of heat stroke.”Kellner and Safe Kids offered these additional safetyTeachtips: children not to play in and around vehicles.

• Never leave keys in the car and store them out of children’s sight and reach.

Likelihood of heat stroke, death rises with temperatures

Each year, children get heat stroke or die from being left unattended in a hot car, but a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service passenger safety expert says there are ways to avoid tragedy.BevKellner, AgriLife Extension traffic safety project director, said as temperatures increase, so does the likelihood of heat stroke and death for children left alone in a vehicle.“Children are especially vulnerable to heatstroke,” she said. “And Texas has a greater overall number of child deaths from children being left in hot cars than any other state.” She said temperatures in parked vehicles rise very quickly, and a child’s body temperature increases three to five times faster than an adult’s.“That combination can be deadly, and in hot weather, the temperature inside a vehicle can increase by almost 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes,” Kellner said. She noted children are far more vulnerable to heatstroke than adults, even when exterior temperatures are not excessively hot. “Hyperthermia or heat stroke can occur at body temperatures above 104 degrees, and even milder exterior temperatures of as low as 80 degrees can pose a threat if a vehicle is parked outside,” she said. “And contrary to popular belief, cracking a window does little or nothing to dispel the heat from the interior of the vehicle.”

Although we are not perfect, I am proud to be a Texan. We do have moments of ignorance and insensitivity. But on June 19th, I was particularly proud to be a Texan. This year, “Juneteenth” was celebrated as a national holiday. All the states recognize Juneteenth in some form. But in 1980 Texas became the first state to recognize the day as a holiday. Finally, the nation has done what Texas did over 40 years ago. It helps that Juneteenth was born in Texas. On June 19th 1865, 2 months after the end of the civil war, Union General Granger with 2000 troops arrived in Galveston. His purpose was to personally tell the slaves in Texas, “You are free.” I do not know why, but I did not mention Juneteenth in church. This coming Sunday I will mention the 4th of July. Why not June 19th, Juneteenth? I can make the excuse that the day was also Father’s Day. But my subconscious reason for the omission may be darker. Not all Christians celebrate Juneteenth. Not this one or the first one. Popular pastor and teacher John Macarthur said, “To throw out slavery as a concept simply because there have been abuses, I think, is to miss the point …. There can also be benefits.” Unfortunately, Macarthur is willing to say what some in the church believe. That slavery is not all bad and it may still have a place. “There may be benefits.” Macarthur should know better and should speak better. Is there any wonder why thinking, caring people often have nothing to do with the church? Any form of bondage, abuse, or neglect is wrong. No matter how many Bible verses one wraps it with. Racism is racism, however many times it is baptized. -Mark S. Ross DMin. Valley LFISD School Student. 2022 C HURCH SERVICE D IRECTORY 1st MethodistunitedChurch Pastor Federico Perez, 797-1393 331 S. The New York Yankees have been electric in 2022. The Bronx Bombers who have crossed into the golden number of 50 wins continue to remain hot and show no signs of slowing down. Hot on their tails are the Toronto Blue Jays. Toronto who is only 11 games behind New York are led by the young infield trio of Calvan Biggio, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. One game behind the Jays are the Boston Red Sox. Heading into the American League Central, which has been a fight between the first place Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins. The Twins who are second place, have been on a roll and look to keep it going to try to overtake an equally electric Cleveland Ball Club. Next up, we go to the American League West, which has been the Wild West as two Texas titans are currently in a clash for first place. The first place Houston Astros who have taken control and grabbed first from the Los Angeles Angels, have held it since April. Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers have been on a tear with a “small ball’ style of play. Texas, who are above .500 for the first time since August of 2019 look to keep it that way. Sitting in third are the Los Angeles Angels, who have had a nightmarish 2022. After Suffering a 14 game losing streak which also included the firing of Manager Joe Maddon and season ending injury to Anthony Rendon. Trout and Othani still remain hot and optimistic despite theAsodds.wenow turn the tables to the National League East, New York seems to be leading the Majors in best records as the Mets currently hold the second best record in Major League Baseball. New York currently find themselves battling out with the defending champion Atlanta Braves. The Philadelphia Phillies sit in third right behind Atlanta.Inthe National League Central, the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers are in a fist fight for first, both holding the same records. St. Louis, who look for their first Playoff appearance since 2014, are trying to hold off Milwaukee’s explosive offense led by Christian Yelich, Willy Adames and Luis Urias. Meanwhile the Cardinals are veteran heavy with Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, all who are in their final season.Inthe National League West, which should also be considered the Wild West as the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are currently battling it out for first. San Diego, who despite losing key stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, have been on a dominant run and have captured first in the NL West. However, due to a big loss against the Colorado Rockies, The Dodgers recaptured first and now hold it. But, due to a crucial series loss to the Guardians in interleague play, San Diego remains in striking distance to retake the first place spot in the NL West. With the 2022 MLB All Star Game on July 19 in Los Angeles, Multiple teams look to capture first and attempt to hold it and lead into the All Star Break.

Glutamate builds gut health Wu and Criscitiello said their study is a logical extension of their long-standing interest in amino acid nutrition and metabolism as well as immunological defenses of animals.“These studies will not only provide crucial information for more effective aquaculture feeds, but they will also help elucidate fundamental interactions between mucosal nutrition and immunology that are conserved across vertebrates, from fish to mammals,” said Criscitiello. “This will help us understand how our gut immune system has evolved to manage beneficial microbiota while preventing infectious disease.”Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and also have other important biological functions, such as helping animals defend against infectious microbes. The mucosal tissues of the intestine serve as the natural barrier to defend the aquatic — and terrestrial — animals against harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses. Thus, the gut’s ability to resist the infectious agents outside the body is crucial for fish health and survival. Glutamate is a precursor of glutathione, an abundant antioxidative substance, and a major metabolic fuel for the intestinal mucosa. So, glutamate is crucial for intestinal integrity and health. However, for over a century, glutamate had been regarded as a nutritionally nonessential amino acid in fish and other“Basedanimals.onresults of our preliminary study, we believe that dietary glutamate plays an important role in the development of the intestinal immune system in hybrid striped bass,” Wu said. “We expect glutamate to increase the production of anti-infectious and anti-oxidative molecules by immune cells in the intestinal mucosa of the fish.” Additionally, he said, the ability of mucosal immune cells to use glutamate for energy production increases with age as the cells mature. “Our findings will have a significant impact on U.S. aquaculture by generating new fundamental knowledge about glutamate in improving intestinal mucosal health and survival of hybrid striped bass,” Wu said. “The findings will also provide a new nutritional method for the use of glutamate as an adjuvant in vaccine development for the fish.”

Texas A&M AgriLife helps formulate new fish diets with protein substitutes

The U.S. is the top producer of hybrid striped bass, and a Texas A&M AgriLife team is working to improve the fishes’ health, growth and productivity by developing effective nutritional strategies to substitute fishmeal and other protein feedstuffs in the farmed bassAquaculturediets. is the agriculturalfastest-growingenterprise in the world. The field is expected to continue growing to provide seafood for the world’s expanding population. Some fish species produced in aquaculture, such as the omnivorous catfish and carps, consume diets without any fishmeal. However, more carnivorous species such as hybrid striped bass have traditionally been fed diets with a considerable amount of fishmeal, which is a very nutritious but costly marine feedstuff. The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture has awarded two grants totaling $1.15 million to the team’s studies of hybrid striped bass. WAC Swimming & Diving Championships include Air Force, California Baptist, Grand Canyon, Idaho, Incarnate Word, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Colorado,NorthernSeattleU, UNLV, Utah Tech, and Wyoming. "What hosting the WAC Championships does is shine the national spotlight on UTRGV, the City of Pharr, and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” UTRGV President Guy Bailey said. “More importantly, it helps us to show our young people where swimming & diving can take them. If they work hard both in the classroom and the competition pool, they too can earn scholarships and compete in events like this in beautiful facilities such as the one here in Pharr."

Glycine helps convert feed into protein Besides glutamate, fish also require a large amount of glycine for growth and health. And like glutamate, glycine had also long been regarded as a dispensable nutrient in animal diets. However, Wu said, the supply of glycine in fish diets may have a crucial role in converting feed into body protein. He and Gatlin will determine how glycine and creatine are synthesized in different fish tissues. This team will also study the roles of glutathione and creatine in mediating the effect of glycine in diet to improve growth, anti-oxidative responses, intestinal integrity, metabolic health and immunity in the hybrid stripedAdditionally, bass. they will determine the role of the target of rapamycin, which is the master regulator of protein synthesis, autophagy/proteasomesand in mediating the effect of dietary glycine to promote protein synthesis and inhibit proteolysis in fish tissues.“Skeletal muscle is the major site for creatine synthesis from glycine in hybrid striped bass,” Wu said. “Glycine activates the target of rapamycin cell-signaling pathway to promote protein synthesis in skeletal muscle, all while reducing intramuscular protein breakdown via musclepathways.autophagy/proteasomestheThispromotesgrowth.”Accordingto preliminary findings, Wu said, “we dietstosupplementingbelieve2%glycinesoybeanmeal-basedcanreplace45% fishmeal in hybrid striped bass diets.”

Thus, our project should allow greater flexibility in formulating diets to meet the stripedrequirementsnutritionalofhybridbasswithout relying on fishmeal or other feedstuffs.” Wu said fishmeal has traditionally been used as the major protein feedstuff in hybrid striped bass diets, but because of the increasing demand and escalating costs, there is a growing interest in using plant proteins such as soybean meal to replace fishmeal in aquafoods. But success has been variable, he“Wesaid.found that glycine, the most abundant amino acid in the body of fish and fishmeal, is relatively low in plant proteins,” Wu said. “Based on results of our preliminary study, we believe that dietary glycine plays an important role in hybrid striped bass growth by maximizing protein synthesis, antioxidative capacity and creatine production in their tissues.”Glutamate, the second most abundant amino acid in the body of fish and fishmeal, acts with glycine to promote metabolic processes.
