AUSTIN, TX, July 10, 2022 – With extreme hot weather driving record power demand across Texas, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is issuing a Conservation Appeal, asking Texans and Texas businesses to voluntarily conserve electricity, Monday, July 11 between 2-8 p.m. ERCOT also issued a Watch for a projected reserve capacity shortage from 2-8 p.m. At this time, no system-wide outages are reliabilityConservationexpected.isatoolERCOT has deployed more than four dozen times since 2008 to successfully manage grid operations. This notification is issued when projected reserves may fall below 2300 MW for 30 minutes or more.ERCOT encourages all electric customers to visit the Public Utility Commission’s (PUC) Power to Save or their electric provider’s websites to get important conservation tips. According to the PUC, ways to reduce electricity use during peak times include turning up your thermostat a degree or two, if comfortable, and postponing running major appliances or pool pumps during afternoon peak hours.ERCOT continues to use all tools available to manage the grid effectively and reliably, including using reserve power and calling upon large electric customers who have volunteered to lower their energyERCOTuse.emphasizes that the call for conservation is limited to the hours of 2-8 p.m.Factors driving the need for this important action by customers: Record high electric demand. The heat wave that has settled on Texas and much of the central United States is driving increased electric use. Other grid operators are operating under similar conservative operations programs as ERCOT due to the heatwave. Low wind. While solar power is generally reaching near full generation capacity, wind generation is currently generating significantly less than what it historically generated in this time period. Current projections show wind generation coming in less than 10 percent of its capacity.Totalforecasted demand is 79,671 MW. How track demandView peak

National Flood Insurance Program Helps Texans Recover From Flood Events
FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance to property owners, renters, and businesses to help with flood recovery. In addition, communities participating in the NFIP are required to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations that help mitigate flooding effects. Currently, about 1,260 unincorporated and incorporated cities in Texas participate in the NFIP. If you live in a community that participates in FEMA’s NFIP, federally subsidized NFIP policies are available for individuals to purchase. participatingNFIP-communities agree to adopt floodplain management standards that protect the ways structures are built in the 1 percent annual chance floodplain. In exchange, those communities are provided with disaster and other financial assistance and NFIP-backed flood insurance for individuals. The structure itself and the contents inside are eligible forFEMA’Scoverage.NFIP also provides discounts for communities that implement new flood protection activities to help save lives and property when a flood occurs. Communities can apply to get a city-wide or community-wide discount through NFIP’s Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS credits community efforts beyond minimum standards by reducing flood insurance premiums for the community’s property owners.Thesystem is similar to—but separate from— the private insurance industry’s programs that grade communities on the effectiveness of their fire suppression and building code enforcement efforts. The CRS discounts flood insurance premiums from 5 percent to 45 percent, based on CRS credit points awarded to communities. For example, the City of Dallas earned the highest CRS rating in Texas, so Dallas residents can save up to 30 percent on policies. The TWDB facilitates Texas’ NFIP activities. In addition, TWDB staff assist interested communities in developing and adopting the necessary floodplain management measures required by the NFIP and the measures needed to reduce threats posed by flooding. The TWDB’s Yi Chan is the state NFIP coordinator and manager of the TWDB’s Community Assistance Program team. In May, FEMA recognized Chan as the winner in the Best FEMACoordinatorcategoryProject/InnovationoftheStateNFIPAwards.recognizedChan's efforts, including increasing outreach and training, supporting Texas’ increased state flood mapping and planning efforts, and providing new guidance for community officials. In the announcement, award FEMA noted that Chan "has been endlessly creative and proactive in driving forward several innovative initiatives in the state of Texas.” Chan and her colleagues focus on enhancing flood risk awareness and improving floodplain management practices across Texas. The TWDB’s Community Assistance Program team travels throughout the state to help local officials facilitate floodplain management.Inaddition to providing education, resources, and training to local officials, the team also supports disaster recovery efforts. TWDB staff help communities develop plans to rebuild and become more resilient. To find out more about the NFIP in Texas, visit the TWDB’s website at www.twdb.texas.gov/flood/ insurance/participation.asp Yi Chan, ProgramCommunityTWDB’sAssistanceManager.
Texas frequently leads the nation not only in structural damage but also in loss of lives related to flooding events.

Watching helplessly as floodwaters wash away your home and belongings is devastating but even more so when your home is not covered by flood insurance. A 2021 statewide survey conducted through a partnership between the University of Texas' Moody College Communicationofand the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) indicates that most Texans are not aware of their flood risk, whether they live in a flood-prone area or not. Additionally, two-thirds of the participants lived in flood-prone zip codes when the survey was conducted. The survey findings suggest Texans could benefit from flood risk, mitigation, or flood insurance information.Floodingcan happen anywhere, but you are more prone to risk living in or near a floodplain. To find out if your property lies in a floodplain, you can search your address on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Map Service Center. For areas that don't yet have data available, the TWDB is working with FEMA and the USGS to develop a supplemental flood risk product, base level engineering, for residents to search their property address on FEMA's Estimated Base Flood Elevation Viewer. Statewide coverage for Texas using the base level engineering is slated for completion by 2024.Ifyour mortgage loan is from a federally regulated or insured lender and your home is located within a high flood-risk area, you are required to have flood insurance.Standard homeowner's insurance does not cover damage caused by a flood, so many homeowners purchase separate flood insurance policies. You can obtain flood insurance even if you aren't located in the floodplain. If you're a renter, consider adding a separate flood insurance policy to your renter's insurance policy.

First Baptist Church, La Feria People change their minds all the time. And they change them for many different reasons. Even a group as prestigious as the Supreme Court can change their minds. That is what the court recently did when they changed their mind on a ruling that they had made 50 years earlier. That change of mind overturned a 1973 ruling called Roe vs Wade. That change of mind by the United States Supreme Court in essence ruled that women did not have a constitutional right to end their pregnancy. The change of mind definitely changed the law of the land. However, it did nothing to change the heart of the people. Some are celebrating, while others are grieving. Some consider a great wrong has been righted for the unborn. Others are already at work helping victims of rape, incest, and dangerous pregnancies. Knowing this change of mind does not end abortion. It only makes it available only to those with the money and resources to travel to places that still allow abortion. For many people it is a simple issue of right and wrong. I think the court’s change of mind and the resulting protests illustrate the issue is anything but simple. It is not simple for me. I see both sides and the break between them. When I was in seminary a severe conflict split the faculty down the middle. Someone asked one of the wisest men I knew, “Where do you stand in this conflict?”. His answer helps me now. “I stand with the pieces.” S. Ross DMin. la 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. HURCH D IRECTORY

With Football season just around the corner, teams across the Rio Grande Valley are already getting in gear with their summer workouts. After the 2022 UIL Realignment that shook up the Valley in February, the 2022 TXHSFB season is expected to be a fun one. Here is a district by district look at what to expect in 2022. Starting off with the 6A’s we look at 32-6A, which will be a lot smaller with the departure of Harlingen South and Donna North down to 5A. Teams to lookout for are Harlingen, Los Fresnos, San Benito and Weslaco. He was a four-year starter on the men's soccer team, a team captain and the Student Body President. The leadership and drive Hinojosa displayed in vari ous roles allowed him to engage with his communi ty, both on campus and off, and make a difference. For the mark he left on PAU and the various ways he has represented the university since graduating, Hinojosa was honored with the Dis tinguished Alumni Award in April. "I'm flattered and I'm humbled to receive such an award," Hinojosa said. "I would've never done all I've done if not for Pan Ameri can University. I thank the south Texas leaders before us who believed and fought in the importance of having a four-year institution at our doorstep. I grew up be lieving I could come to this side of the border and have a better life, and I did." Men's soccer played NCAA Division I contests as a major independent during Hinojosa's tenure. There was no recruitment in those days; Hinojosa said "you just showed up to the field and if you were good enough, you would be picked for the team."
Hinojosa's senior season in 1983 was called "the best year ever for Pan Ameri can University soccer" by then-head coach Reggie Tredaway. The Broncs went 8-5-1 and Hinojosa, a full back and team captain, was a defensive standout. "It was fun. It was an incredible experience for me," Hinojosa said. "I learned leadership skills being on that soccer team. If you believe in what you're doing, if you can ex cel in sports, you can excel at so many other things in life."His impact on the program went beyond the playing field. Now a highly successful investment banker, Hinojosa made one of his first deals with former PAU President Dr. Miguel Nevarez. "We were not getting any kind of help from the uni versity. I set up a meeting with President Nevarez. I said, 'I'm Noe Hinojosa and I've been playing for the soccer team for a couple of years now and I'd like to see if you could help us with about $12,000 so we can have travel money,'" Hinojosa recalled. "We traveled in sta tion wagons and we got peanut butter and jelly, ham sandwiches for road trips. I didn't think it was right, es pecially because that team was probably the most rep resentative of the campus population. Ninety percent of us were Latinos. He said, 'Let me see what I can do,'" Hinojosa continued. "About a month or two later, Dr. Nevarez calls me up and says, 'We set up a $25,000 budget.' And I went, 'Yes!' We started traveling in a team bus that said Pan American University with a driver by the name of Lupe Garcia. We started feeling like we were representing theHinojosaschool." joined student government in his later PAU years and became a leader on campus and be yond. He attended confer ences in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans and par ticipated in debates, lead ing to him being elected National Vice President of Student Governments. He was also the trea surer for the Intercollegiate Knights fraternity. He grew the group's fundraising efforts by getting Tex-Mex bands, or grupos, to play at the Villarreal Conven tion Center. They used the money to donate to food pantries in various colo nias across the Rio Grande Valley, giving those in need easier access to food. In 1992, Hinojosa cofounded Estrada Hinojosa & Company, Inc., based in Dallas. He manages the firm's transactions and has led the company to 30 consecutive years of profits. His career successes drive him to give back. Two organizations he supports that are closest to his heart are Mi Escuelita Preschool, a non-profit organization catering to low-income families that helps young children get prepared for English-speaking kinder garten classrooms, and Forefront Living, a founda tion for high-quality senior care.Having the opportunity to get educated, empow ered and engage while at PAU set the foundation for Hinojosa's life. Being a Bronc, playing soccer, get ting involved with student government and experi encing life on both sides of the border taught him invaluable lessons about working hard and achiev ing big things – lessons he now uses to help others thrive through the "Triple E" mentality, too. "People have put all kinds of barriers in front of me just because of who I am, because my name is Hinojosa. But if you're educated, you learn to run like water," Hinojosa said. "Water goes to the left, goes to the right. It finds a way around. That's what our young people need to know. We are like water. People will put up barriers, but you can still move."

Saul Cantu, another Dental Hygiene student, also provided deep cleaning to a member of the community. “This was (Rafael) Ozul’s first visit to our dental hygiene clinic,” Cantu said. “I do my best to ensure every patient feels welcome and I develop that bond. Mr. Ozul was very happy with the work that I provided.” Ozul, of McAllen, said he was appreciative that Cantu inquired about his concerns. “My experiences at other dental offices have not been what I hoped for,” Ozul said. “Cantu worked on the service I requested and more. The manner in which these instructors train their students is exceptional.” How has the Dental Hygiene clinic impacted the students’ hands-on training? Now in her third semester, Garcia said it has been an incredible resource. “My skills have improved such as in adaptation,” she said. “With ergonomics in dentistry, I have to position myself a certain way when placing the instruments inside a patient’s mouth. Then how effectively I am removing calculus. All that has helped with the handson training I have received in the dental hygiene clinic.” Cantu, also in his third semester, said the clinic has been a positive experience in multiple facets. “I have improved by repeating the skills, to the instructors correcting my adaptation, and improving my speed,” he said. “The opportunities I am given to work on real-life patients is a key individualsRicoattribute.addedthatfromacross the Rio Grande Valley have said many positive things about TSTC’s sheandhave“Somestudents.ofthecomplimentsbeenabouttheirskillstheirprofessionalism,”said.“Studentsare interested in this field because they get to work directly with patients and build rapport. TSTC Dental Hygiene Students Elevate Their Training in Program’s On-Site Clinic
Students Receiving Hands-on Experience
(HARLINGEN, Texas) – The Dental Hygiene program at Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus has produced many dental hygienists through the utilization of its on-site clinic.Raquel Rico, a TSTC Dental Hygiene instructor, said the clinic has been beneficial in the students’ growth since it first opened in “It1996.isnecessary that students practice on ‘real patients’ and not solely on manikins,” Rico said. “The beauty of working with a patient allows our students to learn from real-life scenarios and develop their hands-on training. With a real patient, students get to examine on such things as calculus (known as dental tartar). The community’s contribution to the clinic by arriving for their appointments allows our clinic to continue operating.”Theon-site clinic has been open to the community for preventative dental services. Those include dental X-rays, dental cleanings, deep scaling, root planing, and placing sealants. In addition, individuals are educated about that service such as oral hygiene instructions, blood pressure screenings, diabetes clinic.wascleaning,”wasmemberprovidedHygienecounseling.andinstructionalscreening,counseling,tobaccocessationNadiaGarcia,aDentalstudent,recentlyaservicetoaofthecommunity.“(David)IzaguirrescheduledforadeepGarciasaid.“IthissecondvisittotheHewasverypleased with my efforts and was compliant. I also educated him about various ways to maintain healthy teeth.” Izaguirre, of Edinburg, said his experience with Garcia was knowledgeable. “One of the biggest factors about oral health I learned was about calculus,” he said. “I was informed that my teeth had a layer of calculus. It is a hardcalcified deposit that forms and coats the teeth and gums. It acts as a barrier, but it is also bad. This is what makes a person’s mouth smell, even after they brush their teeth.”
