I-69 MAKES HISTORY IN RIO GRANDE VALLEY AS SOUTH TEXAS’ FIRST INTERSTATE HIGHWAY Designation of 67 new I-69 interstate miles signals economic growth, mobility, international trade in booming South Texas region AUSTIN — In an effort to enhance mobility and attract international commerce to the growing Rio Grande Valley, the Texas Department of Transpor tation with approval from the Texas Transportation Commission today officially designated 67 m i l e s of r e g i o n a l roadways as part of the new Interstate 69. The designation means drivers will now see sections of US 77 and US 281 with I-69 highway signs. Being developed on ex ist i ng roadways as a critical artery for moving freight, I-69 will ultimately become a

11 to 15. T his class is a jump-start for the younger members of our community. It prepares a foundation of aquatic leadership, fitness and swi m m i ng sk ills a nd positive attitudes. A telephone call is not a substitute for a written note either. Here’s what you might mention in your note: • Mention the gift or whatever it is you’re thankful for. • Proceed further and let the giver know what you plan to do with it or have done with it. • Tell the person “how muchâ€? you like the gift or why you are so happy with it. • Should you receive a gift you already have,
let it remain your secret. • If you’re thanking someone for a gift you’re not wild about, and can’t find anything to say about it, thank the person for her thoughtfulness. • In a note to someone who has given you money, you don’t have to mention the amount but do tell the person what you intend to spend it on. • Begin your note with “Dear.â€? -- Dear Irma, Dear Mrs. Wolcott... • Keep nice margins and try to write as straight across the paper as you can so your note doesn’t look babyish. • When you “close,â€? which comes right after the body of your note or letter, sign “Love,â€? and then your name under it. Other times to write a thank-you note are when you’ve been a guest for a weekend or longer in someone’s home; when you receive a gift for any occasion; if you’ve been sick and receive flowers or gifts. So you’re looking at the bullseye the way you did on the first shot, and without moving the rif le itself, you adjust the sights until they’re pointed at the
bullet hole in the target. That’s it. You then remove the cardboard box, sight at the bulls-eye and shoot again. It should be dead on.” “That makes sense,” Dud said. “So what went wrong?” Bert said, “Well, we loaded up everything we needed: chair, table, box, bread wrappers full of sand, target, everything. Then we drove out to the gravel pit and set it all up, just right. Took quite a while. Finally we were ready, so I went over and unzipped my rifle case and pulled out my shotgun.” “So how many of those Old Fool pills do you need, Bert?” “All you can spare me, Doc. Weslaco Native vies FOR interim WBC lightweight title A proud native of Weslaco, Texas, Omar Figueroa Jr. is the first Golden Boy Promotions fighter from the Rio Grande Valley, and the 23-year-old power puncher is pleased to lead the way for his fellow Texans. Unbeaten in 22 fights, with 16 of his wins coming by knockout in three rounds or less, Figueroa has torn through his opposition since turning pro with a 25 second stoppage of Edwin Espinoza in June of 2008. 16 more KO victories have followed for the 5-foot-8 lightweight prospect, who began boxing at the age of seven under the tutelage of his father, Omar Sr, a former fighter himself. Public hearings have been scheduled for August 13, 2013 and August 27, 2013 by the La Feria City Commission regarding proposed annexation of land into the City. The public hearings will be held at 6:30 pm in the La Feria City Commission Meeting Room, 115 East Commercial Ave., La Feria, Texas. The following areas are among those being considered for annexation. 1. As I scrolled through my Twitter feed yesterday, I saw similar messages from news outlets across the nation-Twinkies are back. I remember last year when my friends were posting messages about how sad they were that the company who had the snack cakes had filed for bankruptcy. They were devastated at the loss of the oval-shaped, vanilla-filled sponge cake. This week, a little over a year later, there’s rejoicing that a food from their childhoods is back in stores-and more diet friendly, perhaps, too. a At first I was amused by the reaction to the news. It’s just snack cake, right? Maybe not. Thinking about the foods that are tied to my childhood memories, like the Chex mix my grandmother made at Christmas and the vine-ripened tomatoes we’d eat on the porch at my grandfather’s farm, I see now why the return of Twinkies is such a big deal. Whether or not we realize it, many of us tie major events inour life to the tastes, smells and emotions surrounding them. a To me, watermelon will always be something we eat as family on the back porch on a hot summer day. Corn on the cob will taste best when it’s fresh out of the garden and hotoff Grandma’s stove. Now that I think about it, I’m sure I’d have the same reaction my Twinkie-loving friends had if I found out that I couldn’t have those farm fresh foods ever again. La Feria Responds to Water Needs City Hall Outlines Conservation Plans
