Dear Ms. Etiquette, It seems that a lot of my family are having babies and I would like to give them showers to help them out. I am confused as to how to word and address the invitations. For instance, if it is a couple’s shower, should it be addressed to Jane & John Doe, or Mr. & Mrs. John Doe? Is it proper to put where the mother-to-be is registered on the invitation? I’m stumped. Dear Stumped, You are right, many women are pregnant right now and most of them are having boys! Having showers is certainly a good way to help out a friend or family member. However, an immediate family member should not give the shower, instead it should be a friend, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law or a distant relative. The reason for this as well as for
any other gift-giving event is you do not want to send an invitation that obligates the recipient to provide a gift to a direct relative. Baby showers are usually given before the baby is born but some future moms with difficult pregnancies may want to wait until after the baby is born just in case there is a chance that something might go wrong. So follow the mom-tobe’s feelings. The point of having baby showers is to shower the mom-to-be with gifts for her first baby so she will know what she needs to purchase or borrow, but opening baby gifts is so much fun it can be done anytime. Usually it is not appropriate to give showers to second or third siblings since they usually have hand-me-downs. but if it has been several years since the last baby was born, it’s okay. Invitees should be very close friends and family members or people who were not invited to the shower for the first baby. As far as how to word an invitation, you can make it cute, let your imagination run wild so long as the mother’s name, the date and time of the shower, a request for a response to an R.S.V.P. is mentioned. You should not include a list of things the future mom might need, rather you could include an enclosure card from where they have registered. Address the cards as Mr. & Mrs. John Doe if it is a couples shower. You would word it Mrs. Jane Doe if it was women only. Happy Planning!

The H.O.P.E. Stroke Support Group provides educational and interactive activities, including lectures from experts in various health-related fields, a seasonal scavenger hunt, and an annual Christmas party for those who come to celebrate life, and to learn of resources that can help in preventing strokes or to recover from a stroke. about 50 gallons of liquid manure, soaked in water until it was the color of iced tea, with some inexpensive acid added to make it perfect for growing plants. Dud Campbell had done the necessary welding on the sprayer, and now all that remained was to turn it on and drive around on Bert’s lawn as an experiment. Emily, the designated note taker, was going over things. “Okay, Honey, I have this pretty much figured out. Five gallons of ‘cow pasture tea’ should cover 500 square feet of lawn. Not counting labor, there is 45 cents per gallon of added ingredients, and we’ll have to figure in about two dollars a barrel for the gunny sacks used for straining it. “So if we add this, divide by five, and carry the four, this comes out to your cost of 74 cents per 100 square feet of lawn. Does it matter what kind of grass is in the lawn? No? Okay then, 74 cents. Then there are the labor costs to be added to that … shall we say five
bucks per average-sized lawn? Because you have to pay Windy something to drive the lawn mower. That’s right. I know you volunteered, Windy, but your time is valuable and Dewey may need you on a non-helper day.” Windy devotes one day each week to helping someone, for free, just because. “Then of course, you have to figure in riding mower rental and welding charges … I know they did it for nothing, but you have to be fair and be a businessman. So you then add on research costs, long-term debt service … don’t interrupt … and it comes out to just under $10 a lawn. “If the yard is twice as big as most yards, charge $20 for the ‘tea.’” Windy and Dewey just looked at the smile on her face and smiled, too. Corporate progress is an amazing thing. Brought to you by Home Country (the award-winning book). Take a look at it at www.slimrandles.com.

TERRENCE is a charming little guy. At only ten pounds, and possessing a loving personality, Terrence is a great lap dog and companion. He has a short, clean coat and a bright, alert expression. He is also capable of sitting up like a little prairie dog to beg for treats and attention. Terrence would be a great buddy for a senior looking to spoil a cute little someone. But he’d also make a nice pet for a family with kind children in need of a friend. Terrence’s adoption includes vaccinations, neuter and microchip ID. He is ready to pack his bags and move in with you. How about visiting him this afternoon?

Valley Prepares for Hurricane Season An Active Tropical Storm Season Forecast
Steve Drillete, Meteorologist-InCharge for the National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Brownsville, told a capacity crowd of firstresponders to be ready for an active 2013 hurricane season. He made his sobering remarks during the RGV Hurricane Partners and Integrated Warning Meeting in the City of Weslaco’s Legislative Chambers. Steve Drillete and Barry Goldsmith, N W S / N O AA Warning Coordination Meteorologist, shared the day-long program. The meeting was directed to Valley first
emergency responders, medical support people, and law enforcement agents. It provided an up-dated tropical storm forecast and a review of the enhanced services the NWS will be providing should one of this year’s 12-20 named storms target the lower Texas coast during the 2013 hurricane season. Drillette set the tone for the meeting with his question: Why Are We Here? He promptly answered it. “We are here to build partnerships in preparation for the 2013 hurricane season beginning this month and ending in November,” he said. “We are concerned with making people aware of
