Valleyites might get to see freak snowstorm this winter because the La Feria Events Committee has selected the theme “Let it Snow!” for this year’s Christmas Parade. The selection is always made early to give float builders and participants time to put their thinking cap on and come up with fantastic ideas to wow the crowd and the judges. The parade is held down Main Street from the library and continues to the high school parking lot where the Winter Wonderland festival continues for evening entertainment. The festival hosts the Tiny/’Lil Mr. & Miss La Feria Winter Wonderland Competition, has tons of inflatable rides and pictures with Santa, plus a variety of festival foods. Float entries compete for cash prizes of $500 for first place, $200 for second place and $125 for third place. The committee is always proud to see the impressive floats, bands, Winter Texans and organizations that put so much effort into their entries. Before the parade, the committee is finalizing plans for Halloween in the Park which will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. There were more than 77 participants in the Costume Contest last year, so organizers will plan for even more ghosts and goblins and lots more candy. Vendors and business representatives are needed for this event to offer assorted game booths like ring toss, face painting or the very popular cake walk last year sponsored by a school group. A new train ride has been signed up for the Halloween festivities. As always, the committee appreciates the La Feria student volunteers at all the events that help to make these activities available to our community, most at no charge. Not long after that, it is time for Lighting of the Tree in La Feria on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. Santa Claus shows up with goody bags for the kids at this event where the Community Christmas Tree at city hall is lit with music from area school bands and performances by local elementary students. Everyone is encouraged to bring a waterproof ornament for the city tree. Classroom teachers should call city hall to sign up their classes. ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

La Feria Breaks Ground on Domes Multi-Million dollar project gets underway
The City of La Feria held a Ground Breaking Ceremony for the La Feria Safe Rooms (Domes) on Friday, August 15. Two of the nine hurricane shelters to be built in the Valley will be in La Feria. The dome shelter to be built at 1700 S. Main Street will accommodate 850 people while the proposed dome shelter at 1001 Pancho Maples is projected to house an additional 600 people during a storm. To begin construction, a round concrete foundation will be poured and reinforced with steel rebar. Walls will be built up from the foundation and an airform – a fabric balloon – will form the roof. Attached to the foundation and base structure, it will be inflated. Polyurethane foam will then be applied to the airform as a base, and steel reinforcement attached to

Funding for the proposed domes was originally awarded to the City of La Feria in September 2012 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Texas Depart-
ment of Emergency Management, a division of the Texas Department of Public Safety. FEMA will cover 75% of the cost to build the shelters, with the city making up the other 25% of costs incurred. The city expressed excitement about the proposed
project, desc ribing the
domes as “an amazing opportunity” for the City of La Feria. Secondary use for the facility on Main St. will be a technology center, while the Pancho Maples shelter will function as a wellness center to compliment the recreational center next door to it.

Donald E. (Don) King, 62, went to join his Heavenly Father on Monday, August 18, 2014, with his loving family by his side. He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Lorraine King of Mercedes, TX, and stepmother Francis King. Don is survived by his loving bride of 38 years, Nancy King; cherished sons and daughters, Weston and Brianna King of San Marcos, TX, and Jeffrey and Sara King of Corpus Christi, TX; brother David King of Mercedes, TX; treasured grandchildren Eli, Hailey and Kristopher; several beloved nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and countless friends whom he considered family. He graduated from Mercedes High School and served 4 years in the United States Navy where he discovered his passion for aviation. After returning from the Navy, Don earned his Aviation Maintenance certifications and began his rewarding, life-long career in the field he loved. We will all miss his sense of humor, his sagacious advice and his generous goodwill. He was a giving man who willingly shared his life with everyone. He never knew a stranger. We love and miss you but know you are at peace. A Celebration of His Life will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014, 6:00 PM, at Heavenly Grace Chapel. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Don’s honor to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Heavenly Grace Funeral Home and Crematory.

Robles Corner Mart Comes to the Rescue
A big THANK YOU to the operators of Robles Corner Mart at 418 E. Highway 83 in La Feria for coming to the rescue last week. They provided freezer space to chill more than 180 ice treats for LFISD band members who were practicing in the summer heat. I realized the job was too much of a challenge for my home freezer and the store’s owner Jose Anthony helped us out. Thanks again ! Esmeralda Salazar, band parent

A Pet Resort for Pampered Pooches: Pets are people too! Hardcore pet lovers believe our cuddly, little family members deserve a nice vacation or a “safe haven” in a storm just like their owners. That is the consensus of patrons of TEXAS PET RESORT in Harlingen according to owners Kamron and Vicky Fultz. They have made sure that their canine and feline guests are pampered and provided with extra personal services during their short-term or longer stay. “We love animals and want to make them comfortable,” said Kamron. “Some of our guests stay overnight, others are boarded for longer periods by their owners for various reasons. But, we really fill up when there is a hurricane watch announced,” he added. First of all, what unique services does a pet resort have to offer to their fuzzy little guests that they might
“Hazelnut” getting full treatment from Kyndra and Brenda not get elsewhere—even during a storm? That was the question we put to Kamron. “Our pet resort has 12 acres and plenty of freerun space which includes a supervised, doggie swimming pool,” he said, adding, “We just don’t put our
guests in cramped, smelly cages. Here we have 130 kennels at our disposal with air/conditioned suites and gourmet food, unless the owner brings their own food. No matter how large or small, we don’t do ‘crateboarding.’” The dogs don’t socialize
with other animals unless the owner so chooses, Kamron stressed. “Our guests get walks everyday. Our staff can provide grooming, baths, dental care and beauty treatments if the owner orders it.” he added. History shows that late August and September are
the months of special alertness because most tropical storms make landfall along the Lower Texas Coast during those months. With that in mind, we asked about the best options for pet owners: “First of all, decide if you are going to stay or leave,” he said. “If you are going to leave, have a place in mind that will accept pets—best to make a reservation.” “Make sure you have sufficient food, water and medicine for several days. Not all motels and hotels will accept animals.” He cautioned. If you stay in your home or a shelter, make sure you have everything your pet will need in addition to your own needs. Include in your plans to have your own survival kit. It will include sufficient canned food, water, any necessary medicine, flashlights and a battery operated radio, a generator with 10 gallons
of gasoline, and a full tank in your car. You also have to think about after the storm and the flood waters—with probably no electricity. If you decide to evacuate and leave your pet, Kamron said his facility will stay open and accept pets. “You can bring me your pets as long as they are currently vaccinated against Rabies, Distemper and Bordatella (for dogs),” he stressed. “You must bring paperwork on their vaccination record.” Kamron added that he has survived several hurricanes and stays with the pets. “I will always have room for animals even if they sleep in my bedroom,” he said passionately. “I will not abandon them—for pets are people too!” If you have questions about pets and your preparation for tropical storms, you can him at 428 5400 or visit TxPetResort.com.

Texas Cotton: Harvest Off to Good Start in Rio Grande Valley By Rod Santa Ana, Texas AgriLife, AgFax.Com Continued hot, dry weather is all that’s needed to help Rio Grande Valley cotton growers forget last year’s disappointing crop and harvest a bountiful, successful crop for 2014, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts. “It was a tough year for Valley cotton growers last year,” said Brad Cowan, AgriLife Extension agent for Hidalgo County. “Between prevented planting we had on many irrigated acres due to a shortage of irrigation water and a lack of rainfall that caused most of our dryland cotton acres to fail, it was pretty dismal around here.” While a few lucky growers got the moisture they needed to produce high yields of four bales per acre, most did not, he said. “Overall, only a little over 60,000 bales were produced in 2013,” Cowan said. “That’s a very low figure for this production area, and the lowest since 1995.” But this year is shaping up to be a big turnaround. “We had rains that started last year during harvest and into September, then more in the wintertime and spring,” he said. “Because of all the rain, it was a challenge to harvest last year’s crop, but that rain helped replenish deep soil moisture that we desperately needed. It’s one reason our current crop is looking really good and has a lot of potential.” Yields are especially encouraging. “The dryland crop is already pretty much harvested. A lot of that is up to two bales per acre, which is above average, and there’s a potential for the irrigated crop to be three to three and a half bales per acre.” Rain-free days through August, though, would help keep harvesters moving to get the area’s 145,000 acre crop safely into cotton gins, Cowan said. “The irrigated cotton crop is still out in the field, and we don’t count our chickens before they hatch, but with good harvest weather, we’re hoping for an excellent irrigated crop
The work continues at all hours to get the cotton to market
All Photos Special to La Feria News by Karen Taubert
Two generations of the Taubert Farm Family
When asked if the La Feria News could use a few of her nice photos Karen Taubert replied, “I would be honored if you would share the love! We have something special down here in the Valley. Amidst all the negative press and drama over the border wars, drug trafficking, and human smuggling; harvest season is a reminder that there is beauty all around us and a power at work that is bigger than all our worldly problems”. These photos were taken at Taubert Farms located in the Rio Hondo area. here in the Rio Grande Valley.” Danielle Sekula-Ortiz, an AgriLife Extension integrated pest management agent in Weslaco, said insects were not a major problem this season. “This year we had a late start getting cotton planted due to the moisture we received in rainfall early on,” she said. “We had some pest problems early in the season, like fleahoppers during squaring, but other than that, it was a pretty light pest season. That was good because many growers were having to spray for sugarcane aphids in grain sorghum to protect their crops.” Cowan said the lack of boll weevils in Valley cotton fields is a blessing. “The Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation has done a tremendous job of ridding Valley cotton crops of its major pest,” he said. “This cotton crop is not being affected by the boll weevil. In fact, it’s been unusual to see boll weevils in our cotton fields for the last couple of years. We’re now learning how to grow cotton without the pressure of the boll weevils.” Possible concerns for growers this year, Cowan said, were the lack of what’s called a bottom crop and the downward trend of world cotton market prices. “We’re seeing on both dryland and irrigated cottona lack of cotton bolls on the lower branches of the plants, the bottom crop,” he said. “This could be due to early pest infestations and/or cool weather early in the season. Sometimes the loss of bolls on the bottom branches will be made up for with heavier loads on the upper branches, but we’ll just have to see the end figures after harvest.” Lower market prices, though, are evident right now, Cowan said. “Prices are terrible. They’re weakening. Futures prices are at about 64 to 65 cents per pound of lint, which is way off last year’s average of 75 cents. There are a whole host of reasons for lower prices, including market pressures, crop outlook, demand, and of course, the fact that China still sits on lots of cotton in storage.” Because growers planted later than usual, many may have to scramble to destroy their stalks after harvest by Sept. 1 as mandated by state law, Sekula-Ortiz said. Destroying stalks, either mechanically or chemically, keeps boll weevils from surviving and multiplying in regrowth and volunteer cotton. “It’s important to practice timely and effective stalk destruction,” she said. “It has been proven that stalk destruction is key to controlling boll weevil populations by disrupting their life cycles to avoid overwintering.”
