Q. Irma, recently when I went to Sunday service at my church, I noticed that some young teens that should have known better did not have respect when the congregation knelt and stood during the appropriate times at service. I felt like shaking them to their senses, but resisted thinking they may have had some handicap reason for doing so. Yeah, right. Nothing wrong with their bodies, just their minds. Hellooo! What is wrong with our youth? Then I watched other adult couples talking about the previous evening’s activities during the most important part of the mass, the consecration. I mean, why go to church if you aren’t going to respect the place of worship? I am so embarrassed to be called a Christian and to belong to that particular church community. Am I wrong in thinking this way? What advise can you give me? A. Please don’t be discouraged at other people when attending Sunday service at your church. After all, they wouldn’t be there if they didn’t need to be there. Your reason for being there isn’t to discipline others, it’s to listen to the Word of God, for you, not for

them. We are all at different levels in our spirituality and although it angers you to see others not respecting the House of God, the middle of the service is not the time or place to vent your anger. Now to those not respecting the House of Worship, here is what your posture and actions say about you: Slouching in your seat: I’m lazy. Looking around, not paying attention: I have a short attention span and I’m bored. Slouched shoulders: I have no confidence. Talking to your neighbor during the service: I have no respect for others. I know you may think you are a strong individual doing your own thing the way you want to do it and other’s don’t have to look at you if they don’t like it. Well, the sad news is that you are the only one that thinks that. The rest of the world interprets your actions and poise as a person who is weak, indifferent, selfish and insecure. Take thought in what you are trying to convey through your poise and actions, especially in God‘s house. Irma Wolcott is an Etiquette Consultant certified by The Etiquette Institute of Saint Louis. 5k / 10K Walk / Run To Be Held Jan. 28 In Valley To Benefit Disabled Children

Encouragement for the Week Think about this: “The bridge you burn now may be the one you later have to cross.”

“South Texas Sizzler” event sponsored by Valley Baptist Health System A 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer walk / run, which will be held in the Valley Saturday morning, Jan. 28, will benefit disabled and special-needs children in South Texas. The “South Texas Sizzler” event will kickoff at 7:30 a.m. Jan 28 at the Harlingen Soccer Complex, 4515 E. Harrison (just east of Ed Carey Drive) in Harlingen, with a “Little Sizzle” one-mile fun run. The big event, the 5K / 10K race, will start at 8 a.m. Registration for the race is available online at www.ValleyBaptist.net, or at www.Active.com. Participants can also register at an “Exhibitor’s Expo” that will take place on Friday, Jan. 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the East Tower Lobby at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen. Same-day registration will be held Saturday morning between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. at the Harlingen Soccer Complex. The event -- which is expected to attract hundreds of Valley runners and walkers -- will benefit the Miracle Kids of South Texas, which has been providing free sports activities for disabled and special-needs children ages 5 to 15 in the Valley for the past nine years. All participants in the “South Texas Sizzler” will receive a finisher’s medal, with T-shirts guaranteed to the first 500 registrants. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in various age brackets, ranging from 14 years and under to 70 years and older. Trophies will be awarded for “overall male / female” and “Masters male / female” (50 years and older). A trophy will also be presented to the public or private school with the most participants. A prize basket will be awarded to the team (5 participants or more) with the most creative t-shirt design. The “South Texas Sizzler” is sponsored by Valley Baptist Health System, Border Mobility, Rio Grande Orthopedic Center, the City of Harlingen, Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union, Watermill Express, HEB, Su Clinica Familiar, Rio Grande Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Weslaco Family Care Center & Occupational Medicine Clinic, and Rodeo Dental & Orthodontics. District Preparing For Upcoming Assessments

At the school board meeting Monday (January 9th) Cynthia Torres presented an update on the First Six Weeks benchmark results for the district. The benchmark was administered to students K-11th grade in the areas of Reading/ language arts, writing, math, science, and social studies. The goal of collecting all this data was to help align curriculum with the appropriate level of difficulty for each grade level. One problem the district has uncovered was that students were being tested over material they haven’t covered yet. Regarding last year’s test, La Feria High School was 14 students away from being Academically Acceptable. 17 students in grades 9-11 missed passing by one question, 19 stu-

dents missed passing by two questions, and 19 students missed passing by three questions. “With frequent testing, we would have noticed all along way which kids we should have worked with and needed intervention,” Dr. Mimi Vidaurri said that night. The district is also preparing teachers with their staff development. The staff developments include training on the upcoming STAAR/End of Course Assessments, identifying depth of knowledge questions, questioning strategies, rigor in the classroom, developing questions at higher level, and higher order thinking skills. “Trainings are done here. We have teachers training teachers, and we are really using all the resources we have

in house. If most of the students from one class answered a questions correctly that students from other classes missed, we want to see what that teacher is doing and see if we can implement that strategy throughout the district so all the students can be successful,” Vidaurri stated. 9 th graders need to pass the new STAAR test to graduate, and by evaluating the assessments and monitoring how teachers are preparing for it, the district believes all students can be successful on the STAAR and all End of Course Exams. “We become extremely passionate about what we’re doing because we want to help these students succeed,” Torres said. The board also heard

Presentations from Trane and Schneider Electric Company on upgrade proposals to the old air conditioning systems within the district. Both companies also proposed upgrades to lighting fixtures, installing occupancy sensors, and future ideas to save money on energy and use the facilities to the best of their capabilities. The board will award the proposal to the company that provides the most cost efficient and effect proposal for the district at the next school board meeting. The board has approved to move the regular school board meeting scheduled for March 12th to March 5th due to Spring Break, and minutes from the December 12th meeting were also approved.

Board Recognizes FFA Students

The School Board Trustees recognized the La Feria High School FFA Chapter Conducting Team for placing first in District Competition and advancing to Area X competition. The team has placed first for the last five years in a row. The team includes Dustin Trevino, Vattell Cooke, Tiana Barco, Lauren Rodriguez, Aaron Martinez, Briar Holt, and Erasmo Villarreal.

The La Feria High School FFA Public Relations team was recognized before the school board for placing second at the Tip-O-Tex District LDE’s and advanced to Area X Contest in Kingsville. From left to right: FFA Advisor Robert Salazar, Jennifer Duran, Bianca Munoz, and Selina Cano with School Board President Juan Briones.

The La Feria FFA Farm Skills Team placed second in the Tip-O-Tex District competition and earned the right to advance to Area X Competition. The team of Jorge Pina, Michael Kalnas, and Gilbert Fonseca demonstrated how to properly set up an electric fence
