CARS I’VE LOVED AND HATED

by Michael Lamm In 2004, though, I hit a snag. I bought my XKE that year, and I knew immediately that I wasn’t going to sell it again, ever. The XKE is a keeper. And apparently so is my Boxster. I was going to sell the Boxster after learning from it, but it’s been such a delightful car, with such a strong personality and so many good qualities, that so far I haven’t been able to let it go. I’ve bought other cars alongside those two, but I haven’t gone back to the static four I used to have. Mike has owned four Panteras, one reason being that they’re fairly easy to

details so many Model A histories talk about. Th history of a car, I finall decided, wasn’t the histor of the car so much as th history of the man or me who engineered, designe and sold it. So yes, Model A his tory had everything to d with Henry. I’m not sayin Henry engineered and bui the Model A all by himsel but he must have been a lo like Steve Jobs, becaus everything had to filte through him personally He applied very high, rigi standards, and everythin had to be right in Ford’ mind before he’d releas

Lamm had worked on Hudsons for years, so he deemed this another non-teacher that had to go. work on. Again, he wasn’t learning anything new, so he sold his last two in 2000. More about his Panteras in a future chapter. Now, I’d like to explain what I’m talking about when I expect a car to teach me something. The whole thing goes back to the Model A Fords I owned as a teenager. The Model A, early on, became a window for me into what Henry Ford was thinking when he signed off on the car back in 1927. In my tinkering with Model As, it became clear that Henry Ford’s goal was to manufacture the simplest, easiest-to-work-on, most rugged, longest-lasting car he possibly could, and he succeeded marvelously. (Other, similar windows into his working philosophy would be the Model T and Ford’s early V-8s.) In other words, I got the message from the Model As I owned that the history of those cars had a lot more to do with the man who engineered and built them than it did the mechanical changes or body styles or the other

a part or the entire car fo production. So as I began to acquir more cars, I’d use them, lik the Model As, as window to try to fathom the me and institutions that brough them into being. Becaus mine had always been Hudson family, my nex curiosity had to do with th men and women who cre ated the history of Hudson As a teen, I would specula and wonder what it must b like in Detroit and who th people were who decide on a new instrument pan for the 1951 Hudson, for ex ample, or a new 7X Horn engine for racing. Then, as an adult wri ing about cars and the histories, I had the oppo tunity to actually talk t some of those people an ask them specifically abou their decisions – person decisions, company dec sions, committee decision in some cases, but decision and nuances that had bee hidden for all those year The detective work bega to fascinate me. There are so many children in our family not to mention friends, co-workers, etc. I really can’t afford to buy many gifts this year but feel like not giving is not proper etiquette either. Notice of Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) The USDA, Rural Utilities Service has received an application for financial assistance from East Rio Hondo Water Supply Corporation. The proposal consists of relocating and increasing the size of an underground water transmission line adjacent to FM 2480 between FM 3069 and FM 510 in Cameron County, Texas. The proposed project is needed to comply with Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) regulations relating to a planned expansion of FM 2480, and to increase the water pressure for existing populations. An existing 6-inch waterline would be replaced with a 12-inch waterline along a new route. As required by the National Environmental Policy Act and agency regulations, the Rural Utilities Service prepared an Environmental Assessment of the proposal that assessed the potential environmental effects of the proposal and the effect that the proposal may have on historic properties. The Environmental Assessment was published on September 14, 2012 for a 30-day public comment period. No public comments were submitted to the Rural Utilities Service or the applicant during the 30-day comment period. Upon consideration of the applicant’s proposal, federal and state environmental regulatory and natural resource agencies, no effect determinations to historic properties and public input the agency has determined that the proposal will not have a significant effect on the human environment and for which an Environment Impact Statement will not be prepared. The basis of this determination is the review of all relevant environmental information pertaining to the proposed project area, and any comments from the public and regulatory agencies. In order to avoid or minimize any adverse environmental impacts, the Rural Utilities Service will require the applicant to incorporate the following mitigation measures into the proposal’s design: • The contractor shall work during normal weekday work hours from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm to reduce construction noise exposed to the adjacent properties. Work outside of this time schedule shall be limited to emergency repairs only. • If cultural materials are encountered during construction, work shall immediately cease in the area of discovery. Work may continue in the project area where no cultural materials are present. The contractor shall immediately notify the consultant architect/engineer, the Texas Historical Commission (512) 4636100, and the USDA Rural Development State Environmental Coordinator (254) 742-9789. • The USFWS will be contacted immediately if a federally listed animal is seen in the project vicinity during construction activities. The USFWS can be contacted at 361-994-9005 (CCESFO) or 956-748-3607 (Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge) during normal business hours. After hours, 361-533-2797 Dr. Larisa Ford can be called. • After completion of construction activities, a completion report will be provided to Dr. Larisa Ford at larisa_ford@fws.gov , indicating if BMPs were employed properly by the contractor. A project completion report will be submitted within 30 days after completion of work to Allan Strand, Field Supervisor, CCESFO, Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, 6300 Ocean Drive, Unit 5837, Corpus Christi, Texas 78412-5837, summarizing all work completed. • The contractor shall avoid locating horizontal boring entrance and exit pits outside of the line of vegetation bordering the resaca to avoid disturbance of vegetation that provides suitable cover, feeding and nesting sites for wildlife. • If construction activities must occur during the bird nesting season of March through August, the contractor shall provide a survey for bird nests conducted by a qualified individual prior to commencing work. If nests are found, a no construction zone of a 75-ft radius will be marked and maintained around the nests until the birds have abandoned the site. The birds and nests are not to be disturbed.
