After nearly two months, Los Fresnos has a new head man. Los Fresnos CISD approved Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s David Cantu as their new athletic director and head football coach. Cantu spent nine seasons as the athletic coordinator at Brownsville Veterans, going 61-33 as the Chargers head coach. “I had to think it over and talk about it with my family and my wife,” Cantu said when he first saw the job opening. “I did feel at peace when I applied

for it. Five years ago, I did not apply, I didn’t feel I had accomplished enough and, in my heart, I just was not ready. This time around, I felt ready and I knew there would be plenty of good applicants, so I just wanted to throw my name in.” Cantu replaces Patrick Brown, who was reassigned in early December after five seasons as Falcons head coach. In his five years, Brown guided the Falcons to three playoff appearances and two trips to the third round of the playoffs. There is plenty of history in Los Fresnos for Cantu as he will return

Courtesy Photo to his alma mater, where he began his coaching career at the junior high level and eventually served as an assistant for eight seasons in two separate stints between 2002 and 2009. After the 2009 season, Cantu spent two seasons at Brownsville Rivera

as a head coach before moving to Brownsville Veterans. Since the school first opened in 2010, Cantu has been the program’s only coach and has had plenty of success. Now, he’s eager to return to one of the Rio Grande Valley’s premier districts.

“Those types of games in 32-6A, the atmosphere is hard to explain,” Cantu said. “John Grisham couldn’t write a book on how amazing that feeling is. Those are strong and established programs. I’m just overjoyed to be able to be in the mix with the coaches there is great.”

working on the sidewalk, following Bresson’s instruction. He said he wanted to give something back to the community and thanking the staff and teachers of one of the local school district schools that is the farthest from the main campus was a way of doing so. “I have been looking for something to recognize our educators,” Bresson said while waiting for the participants who were told to show up at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. “I found out about this on the Internet.” He was referring to the Chalk the Walk, a

campaign created in the late 1900s by the City of Iowa in which artists got together and painted inspirational messages on the sidewalk of that city’s downtown area. Bresson said giving something back to the community is of one of the goals of the church he opened in Los Fresnos in 2019. He said the Chalk the Walk event held outside Las Yescas school was to thank educators for the work they do and more so with today’s pandemic.

The staff and students at Las Yescas Elementary School found a different looking sidewalk last Wednesday. Colorful messages left by members of the community adorned the concrete slab leading to the school main door. Each and every display was put there by students and parents who participated in a campaign called Chalk the Walk set up by Chad Bresson, pastor with The Table of Los Fresnos church. Nearly a dozen people showed up to the event and began

Wet Paws opens in different location

On Saturday, January 12, Wet Paws held a ribbon cutting attended by several members of the community including the Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce. Photo by Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce. By Tony Vindell Pet owners and lovers can continue taking their fur babies to one of their favorite Los Fresnos places. Wet Paws Pet Grooming, a business with an extensive number of services for cats and dogs, is now open at its newest location at 406 E. Ocean Blvd. Among the services it provides are tooth brushing, furminator, pawdicure, nail polish, and blueberry facial. Blueberry facial is a treatment to get rid of tear stains and coat color enhancing on dogs and cats. The business is owned by Juan and Diana Morones. Morones said they opened the pet grooming business after they started taking care of their Dobermann named Goliath. “I went to UT in Brownsville,” Diana Morones said, “but decided to have our own business after college.” She said their pet grooming shop is a family-owned and -run operation with a staff of five. “Business has been

good so far,” Morones said. “In fact, we are booked for the next two weeks since our grand reopening.” On Saturday, Jan. 12, the business held a ribbon cutting attended by several members of the community including the Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce Among them were chamber staff, Los Fresnos Mayor Alex Flores, City Manager Mark Mi-

lum and other community and business leaders. Wet Paws joined the chamber since it first opened in 2016 and it’s one of about 140 members of the business oriented organization. “We are open from Tuesday through Saturday,” Morones said. “We are taking clients by appointments only and allowing one client at a time to come inside at this time.”

Gerry Martinez surpasses 1,000 points

Los Fresnos sophomore guard Gerry Martinez drives to the basket against the PSJA North Raiders on Dec. 5, 2020 at Los Fresnos High School. Photo by Andrew Cordero. by Kevin Narro | RSL LOS FRESNOSOn Tuesday night, young sophomore Gerry Martinez wrote another chapter in what has already been a brilliant career. Despite the loss against Weslaco on Monday, January 25, Martinez became the fourth player in head coach Marco Hinojosa’s tenure to score 1,000 career points. Martinez finished the game with 22 points, including the last 10 points in the fourthquarter. “It is a blessing,” Martinez said. “It didn’t go the way we wanted to, we didn’t win the game but it was a surreal moment for me for sure. I have played with some great guys in the past and this year, they have

helped set me up for success.” Martinez joins the ranks of former Falcon greats, Andrew Carrizales who leads the way with 1,348 points, Jordan Urbina with 1,314 points, Hugo De La Cruz with 1,343 points and now Martinez. “My 1,000 point was a free throw in the third quarter,” Martinez said. “I wasn’t keeping track but after I made the free throw I thought back in my head and counted and realized I had done it. Just to be up their with those names is special and if there is a scoring record I’m going to try and beat it, I’m not sure what it is but I will try and beat it.” What stands out is Urbina and Carrzales did it in four years, De La Cruz did it in three years. Martinez has done it through a

season and a half. “As good as Gerry is, we still think there is so much room to get better,” said Hinojosa. “His goal this offseason will be to put muscle so he can take the beating on a nightly basis and so he can finish better at the rim.” With the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of former Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant, Martinez tries to emulate that Mamba Mentality on the court. “I wore his shoes against Weslaco in honor of Kobe,” Martinez said. “When it comes to a role, it’s that Mamba Mentality, I try to have that mentality.” Martinez and the Falcons remain in the hunt for a seventh straight district title.

The Next Chapter The Love Affair Pt. 3

By Nandy Ekle

Jose was her perfect match. His cream-colored skin never changed and his dark eyes always reflected her deep inner self. What she saw in those deep gorgeous mirrors was beautiful. She giggled as she thought about his weight. Sometimes he was pretty hefty, and sometimes he was slim. But he was always the most wonderful thing she saw, especially on Super Bowl Sunday each year. She straightened the front of her maroon chiffon dress and adjusted the sleeves around the upper part of her arms. Spraying a dab of cologne, she checked to make sure her teeth weren’t wearing her lipstick. Yes, age showed in her face,

but she could live with her maturity. Bryan never seemed to notice; Jose would love it. She flounced down the stairs and saw her beefy husband looking over the nest she had built for him. “What kinda’ sammiches?” “Bologna. I know what you like.” “Sure do. Thanks, babe.” He grabbed one bread triangle and bit half of it, chewing with a glop of mustard on his chin. Snagging a bottle from the cooler next to him, he plopped down and wielded the remote like a scepter. “’at’s a good sammich,” he said around his chewing. A soggy piece of bread flew out of his mouth and hit her shoulder.

“Thanks,” she answered while brushing the goop away. A shadow of annoyance crossed her face, then left. He swallowed. “Sorry,” he said without looking at her. He pointed the remote at the television, a king commanding his loyal subjects. Christine looked at the clock on the wall above the TV, checked the mustard spot on her shoulder one more time, then settled herself on the opposite corner of the sofa closest to the front door. She slid the unopened wine bottle on the coffee table a little to the left, then back to the center between the two glasses in front of her. She couldn’t help fidgeting; Jose would arrive a couple of minutes after the game started. The picture on the television screen was split into three parts with a sportscaster in the middle pane. On either side of him each team’s head coach yelled about what good players they had and how their team would mop up the field with the other. The announcer in the middle gave the illusion of refereeing the coaches, but anyone could tell he was actually egging them on. “Kick off in exactly two minutes, “ Bryan said to Christine. “TIME TO WRAP THIS

CRAP UP. GET OFF THE SCREEN.” He yelled at the TV. She smiled and looked down. That meant about five minutes until Jose’s arrival. She patted her hair one more time and curled her feet under her dress. Looking over at her husband she saw he was already lost to her. A couple of commercials whizzed by, then the two quarterbacks stood on the 50yard line with the referee. The coin toss. She always thought it strange that a coin toss determined the fate of an event as important as the Super Bowl, nothing but chance—not a whit of skill involved. She watched as the memento coin fell to the turf in front of the ref. He picked it up, pointed to Bryan’s team and ran from the field “HOT DAMN!” Bryan yelled from his side of the couch. “MY BOYS GET TO RECEIVE!” Over her husband and the cheering crowds on the television, Christine thought she heard a noise on the porch. Launching from the sofa she walked with controlled steps to the curtain covering the large window next to the front door. She peeked between the lengths of fabric but did not see anyone with a hand raised to

knock. Instead of going back to the couch, she turned and leaned on the large oak door. The player ran down the middle of the field and kicked the ball toward the other goal, right into the arms of Bryan’s favorite player, who immediately ran into a solid wall of

opposing jerseys. “GO GO GO GO GO,” he yelled at the screen. A quiet little tapping sounded on the door and Christine lifted her head, her eyes shining as bright as stars with anticipation.

...Karina Gonzalez and her daughter Etzel were among the participants of last week’s campaign. “We like it,” she said. “It’s nice to be recognized, particularly during these hard times.” Las Yescas is located along FM 803 about 12 miles north of Los Fresnos. The school is closer to the town of Rio Hondo and although its address is listed as being in San Benito it’s one of Los Fresnos School District’s farthest campuses built in 1955.

DPS Reminder: DL Expiration Waiver Ends in April AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding the public the waiver on expiration dates for driver licenses (DLs) and identification cards (IDs) ends on April 14, 2021. Customers who need to renew are urged to make an appointment or renew online today. The waiver, granted by Governor Greg Abbott in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, applied to DLs, commercial DLs, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020. “Driver License employees have worked diligently to help Texans during challenging times

and should be commended for their dedication,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “The Driver License Division has innovated to better serve constituents by implementing a new appointment solution to improve services and by providing extended hours at several locations across the state.” Online renewals still a convenient option Many Texans are eligible to skip the trip to the office entirely by renewing their DL/ID card or changing their address online at Texas.gov. Customers can also renew by phone at 1-866-DL-RENEW (1-866357-3639). The requirements and cost for online and phone renewal are the same as in-person transac-

tions. Expanded office hours To assist customers needing in-office DL services, designated high-volume offices are offering expanded hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday. Scheduling an appointment Services at driver license offices are now conducted by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or check availability, visit the online appointment scheduler. If you are unable to find an appointment at the office of your choice, check back for availability at that office or other locations nearby. Please check often as availability does change. FEBRUARY 3, 2021 • LOS FRESNOS NEWS • 7 your scheduled appointment, please reschedule or cancel it ahead of time. While the department is working to serve as many customers as possible, people with appointments not showing up continues to be a major obstacle. In December 2020, for example, approximately 31% of people were no-shows for their appointments. The appointment system, which debuted in May 2020, is designed to provide additional convenience, reducing the time Texans wait in line. Customers can book appointments for a specific day and time, up to six months in advance, and show up 30 minutes or less before their scheduled time. Customers can check-in using the kiosk inside the office or from their mobile device. All offices offer a limited number of same-day appointments. These appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Customers who book these appointments can leave the DL office until their designated time. Additionally, most offices also offer customers without an appointment a spot on a “standby” list. These customers are required to wait in the office and are assisted in the event of a cancelation or no-show. The number of standby appointments available is limited to ensure all customers who are placed on the list will be served by the end of the day. To ensure a safe environment, COVID-19 protocols have been implemented at DL offices.

Ask Our Dentists Q: I just turned 40 yrs old and feel that my teeth and smile overall is dull and looking old. There’s nothing ‘really wrong’ with my teeth; just needs a make-over of some sort. I don’t have a lot of money to spend so what can I do to improve my smile?

by DR. ADAM LALONDE

Dr. Adam Lalonde

Everyday living can take its toll on even the nicest of smiles. Foods, beverages, and medications can leave stains behind. And tobacco? Definitely a problem. Just growing older can yellow your enamel. Unconscious habits like grinding, clenching, and

chewing on your pen can create irregular edges and chip your teeth. On the other hand, sometimes you’re just born with a smile you don’t like. Well, either way, you don’t have to live with it. And you don’t have to wait because you’re on a budget either. Tooth-colored bonding is a beautiful and affordable solution! Here are some of the flaws that bonding can fix for you: • Unattractive stained or silver-colored fillings • Broken/jagged fillings • Spiky surfaces surrounding a cavity • Chips or cracks in your enamel • Slight but noticeable gaps between teeth • Teeth that need reshaping and reproportioning • Teeth that have conspicuously darkened or stained over time.

Using special precautions and ultra clean rooms, we have seen more than five hundred patients at our clinic in the past four months. With laminar air operating rooms and minimally invasive surgery, ninety percent of our patients have gone home in 12 hours, walking after a knee replacement or hip replacement. Same day surgery (outpatient) Those patients who need to stay in the hospital have a private room. Not one person has had an infection. Thank you, Rick W. Bassett, M.D

NEWSPAPER POWER.

It is hard to imagine the Big Game without hot wings, zesty delivery pizza or homemade buffalo chicken dip, despite the anticipated heartburn that might follow. On top of all your favorite rich and spicy foods is the anxiety you may get from the game itself, not to mention the built-up stress associated with the past year. With stress increasingly being recognized as a contributing factor to heartburn, taking steps to mitigate symptoms can help you better enjoy the game, especially as this year is shaping up to be more unpredictable – and therefore more stressful – than ever. “This unprecedented year is generating anxiety and stress for all those involved in the planning leading up to the Big Game, from event coordinators to the players, advertisers, and fans,” says Kenny White, a sports analyst and legendary oddsmaker known as the “Wizard of Odds.” “But die-hard football fans and casual viewers alike could use some of this uncertainty to actually enjoy the whole Big Game experience even more than in previous years.” De-Stress with a Little Fun To stress less, look for ways to have a bit of extra fun around the

Big Game. For example, TUMS, the brand that celebrated “TUMSworthy” moments during the game last year, will be launching a new bingo experience on February 1. To participate, get your game board at TumsworthyBingo.com and follow it during the game. Delivery pizza arrives with the wrong toppings? Out of chicken wings? Fumble on the field? Scorching dip? Examples such as these could represent a TUMSworthy moment on your bingo board. Players who complete a line of B-I-N-G-O by the end of the game earn a chance to win a piece of $55,000 in prizes. “While the Big Game will once again be full of uncertainties, creative propositions such as the #TUMSBingoSweepstakes can make the whole experience more fun for fans and non-fans alike,” says White. Beat Symptoms Generally characterized by a burning sensation in the chest, other signs of heartburn include acid indigestion, sour stomach, and upset stomach associated with these symptoms. But you can take action to reduce this discomfort, whether ordering from your favorite restaurant or testing out that new buffalo chicken dip recipe that you have been eager

to try. Because eating too fast can contribute to heartburn, one of the most effective ways to alleviate symptoms is to take time to savor all those tasty snacks. Also, consider mixing up your spread with a few items you know are not heartburn triggers. You might also want to make spectating more active. When you lie flat, your esophagus and stomach are on an even plane, making it easy for stomach acids to flow into your esophagus, which can cause heartburn. Sitting at a 45-degree angle could compress your stomach and make things worse. So, try to get up and move around between plays. You can also turn to America’s #1 heartburn brand TUMS and have some TUMS Chewy Bites on hand. With a main ingredient of calcium carbonate, delivering fast-acting multi-symptom relief, and neutralizing acid on contact to treat the signs of heartburn, TUMS goes to work in seconds to deliver heartburn relief. To learn more, and for more heartburn relief tips, visit tums.com. This Big Game, relax and have fun. With a smart game plan, there is no need to be sidelined by heartburn.
